The first last of us is my all time favourite game out of any video game, the characters in it, such as Joel and Ellie, they grew on me and seeing their relationship evolve to that of a father and daughter, I loved it, and it felt so natural. Then I saw the part 2 leaks and yeah like most people I wasnt happy, but i decided to go in with an open mind thinking maybe it will play out well. I was wrong. I definitely enjoyed the first couple of hours, getting to know some of the new characters as well as how Ellie has developed throughout the years, but then after only the first couple of hours out of a 30 hour or so game, they killed off Joel. This made me mad, not that Joel died, yes I was sad about that but about how quickly he died in the game, to me it felt rushed and killing off people's favourite character in only that short amount of time, which I was also mad about the fact that Joel just trusted the people in the resort so quickly, what happened to the Joel who was always on guard and didn't trust anyone?? Anyways that happened but I decided to stick through it and play on, because i did want to get revenge for Joel as Ellie. I loved playing as Ellie in the first part of the game, i had no problems with that, but then we get to the second part. Abby. Also known as Joels killer. I want to know what the hell was going through the writers heads when they decided we would want to play as our favourite characters murderer? But anyways I played as her, killed her a few times just to get my own revenge, and then we get to the Ellie part again. Now this was the part that just completely ruined the game for me, I stuck through it thinking with some hope it would get better, but nope. Ellie now has a family with Dina and JJ after getting beaten up by Abby and she decides to drop it all to go after Abby again, this didn't bother me, I was actually rooting for Ellie to go after her but then we do. And when Ellie was on the brink of getting her revenge she lets her go... This had me nearly throw my controller at the screen, i was fuming. The first part of the game was Ellie going and killing people that was in the same room as her when Joel died and finding out where Abby was, she even killed a pregnant lady, so for her to let her go at the last minute didn't make any sense. She left her family, she's killed a lot of people just to get to this one person, her friend has also died because of this person and she lets her go? It just didn't add up and if the writers were trying to send a message out they failed. They actually want firing. To me the game was trying to force upon political agendas, trying to get us to care about characters i would rather violently torture and it was just a big mess. Honestly it ruined me, the only joy I got out of playing this game was the actual gameplay, the graphics and the flashbacks of Joel and Ellie. Afterall that was the reason I wanted to play the game, to see there relationship as Father and daughter and get the old banter the two had from the first game, I hardly got any of that. Instead I was forced to play as a character i seriously wanted to kill and that I could care less about and I was forced to sit through a **** story. If anyone has gotten to the end of this long rant then i highly recommend not wasting your money on this game. After 7 years, they give us that, i think we deserve an apology as well as a rewrite of the story. Expand

Druckmann and naughty dog would rather teach you a lesson on perspective and empathy instead of telling a good story that honors the protagonist from the previous game. I don't usually listen to the voices that say everything is terrible, and whine about how someone can ruin "Their" game when nothing that game companies create belong to them.

And honestly I can understand why some people might be sour on this game. But it's not a zero, it's so far from a zero. The graphics are gorgeous, the combat is fluid, the atmosphere is tense and engaging.

The story and the character development that were the richest part of the franchise just disappeared. The fact that there were so many plot wholes and so much incoherence on the development of the story is infuriating. I cloud not mind the fact that Joels dies, I honestly could, but to TURN HIM INTO A VILLAIN that's where you lose me. To degrade him and his essence the way they do is just disgusting. I am not saying that I am mad about him dying, but THE WAY that is what makes me mad. Then they put these flashbacks that just made me sad and angry because I KNOW I won't see him again. Then, the fact that Ellie literally looses her essence and that they try to make us see her as the enemy? like Abby is a good person?!?! like what the hell!!!??? And the next thing I am saying is WHY I HATED THE WHOLE GAME. They made us play like 12 hours of Ellie, we see her do things that are wrong, she tortures, she kills, she gets herself in this revenge mode that blinds her of her principles and moral. THEN WE HAAVE TO PLAY 10 HOURS AS ABBY, an awful human being that just killed Joel, that doesn't regret anything she does. And we are supposed to feel empathy for her? like she is a good person? she thinks that because life hit her hard, she has an immunity card that gives her the right to act the way she does. She doesn't regret killing or torturing or simply putting people at risk. And this is the part where Ellie is different. We see REGRET and SADNESS and ANGER towards everything she does, she KNOWS its wrong. And that is because of Joel, all the things that he taught her, because she becomes the human being he wanted her to be, a good human in the messed up world the live in. Thats why we see remorse in her actions. We see that she feels sick because of what she does. And all those moments when she acts like a "crazy person" are because of the emotional state she is in, she is in greave, she is blinded because of all those emotions, and most of the things that she does are in self defense!. Also, She defends her friends and would never turn her back on them. Abby doesn't care, she is a selfish, badly developed character. Joel and Ellie deserved more and that is just a FACT. I feel so bad for giving this score and this review, but this game is so bad that I just have to. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would not recommend this game be played by anyone. The original Last of Us was an excellent game. Easily a 8 or a 9 out of 10. Its greatest asset, of course, was its story. It was relatively simple; however, it was executed masterfully which resulted in a gripping and emotional experience that attached you to the characters and immersed you in the world. I had always thought that TLOU was always about parenthood. Specifically, the theme was that a parent will do absolutely anything to protect their child. Even if it meant giving up the world. TLOU2 on the other hand, is all about hate (according to the director himself). More specifically, it's about revenge, and how an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind (unless you're a buff woman, then you get to keep one). Honestly, the themes present in this game don't build upon the one's in the first game. TLOU took place in a bleak, violent post-apocalyptic world, but revenge was never present as a motif. TLOU was about parenthood and survival. Survival is still present in the sequel, but parenthood is mostly thrown to the wayside. Replacing it is revenge which is clumsily handled. In the first two hours, the beloved protagonist of the first game, Joel, is brutally murdered by some woman named Abby who's the daughter of a doctor that Joel killed in the first game. Abby cruelly tortures Joel before killing him and is even shown to take sadistic pleasure in doing it. Meanwhile, Ellie, Joel's adoptive daughter, watches as Abby kills Joel right in front of her. Abby spares Ellie, so Ellie chases down Abby to try and kill her to get revenge. After Joel's death, every player is think the same thing as Ellie: I'm going to kill that **** However, that never comes. At the end of the game, Ellie forgives and spares Abby's life (even though Ellie's already killed a bunch of Abby's friends). Abby also bites off Ellie's fingers and Ellie returns home to find that her girlfriend left her and she can't play guitar anymore. The game left me feeling empty. I wasn't satisfied or entertained by the story at all. I guess that's what they were going for, but what's the point of a game that makes you feel like **** Other games with unhappy endings (like Mad Father) usually at least entertain me or leave me with something interesting to think about. This game's theme was explained to me by my father when I was 5 years old. "Two wrongs don't make a right." I'm going to go replay the first game and pretend like this game doesn't exist. Okay, so the story sucks (which is a big problem considering how heavy the story is in this game), but it is still a video game, so is it fun to play? Yup. The gameplay is fun. Certainly an improvement over the first game, but it certainly isn't going to blow your mind. Unfortunately, while the game may be much longer than the first game, it lacks a multiplayer mode. I spent dozens of hours playing multiplayer in the first game, so it's a real shame that it's absent. It would've been a good opportunity to have some more fun with these game mechanics. At the very least, I don't need to renew my PS Plus membership. The gameplay still doesn't save this because this is a story focused game. The story sucks, so the gameplay isn't really able to support it. The graphics are great and the music's fine, but ultimately, this game isn't worth $60. The gameplay's fun, but the story is so bad that it poisons the whole experience. But I don't like to leave on a downer, so I've got some good games for you. Want a revenge story staring a young woman? Try out Tales of Bersersia. It's got a great story, great characters, great development, and it's 75% off on Steam until June 25th. You want a survival horror third person shooter? Try out Resident Evil 4. It's got shooting, roundhouse kicking, monsters, a goofy story, and oodles of replay value. It's only $20 on Steam and it's available on every console known to man. You want some stealth action gameplay? Go and play Metal Gear Solid V. There is literally like 7 ways you can sneak through each level, and you've got more stealth tools than you'll know what to do with! In short, don't play this game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Anyone who was a fan of the original game for the balance between story, puzzles, and fighting.. prepare to be disappointed. The only character that is interesting is gone and you are forced to play as the villain of the story without a choice. They try to make you feel empathy but it only made me not want to play the game more than I already didn't. The game's unlikeable characters, morose Ellie, and lack of Joel gives no good elements to the game. The graphics are good. yea.. and? The gameplay has barely been tweaked and the way the story is jack **** I had to force myself to play through with Abby, and even then I was hoping to watch her friends die at some point. This game tries to make you feel bad for the enemy and fails horribly. If anything this has only shown me that naughty dog has gone the way of EA and Bethesda, selling out for a good dollar. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, spent 2 days playing the game here what I have to say, the graphics and game play is good that deserves credit at the very least. They put a message but I didn't really care who if ellie was a lesbian. It was going cause problems for some but I was more invested in the story. I enjoy the beginning of the game seeing the outcomes of Joel decision but of course I gotten to that dreadful point in the game where joel just gave a bunch of strangers his name after savingthim. And they return the kindness of straight up murdering and butchering the character even though joel told ellie to not say his name so lightly anymore. But yet he gave his name to people he saved a d was crucified by them. One way to piss of fans. As I play afterward the only thing kept me going was to kill abby(Joel killer) but the more I play I realized that they were making ellie seemed more and more like a monster and it felt as if the game has lost it original idea that it was a survival zombie game. Then the next slip up I had to play abby and was force to watch joel death a second time making me want to kill her more even her action thought my time playing as ellie drive me to get revenge for ellie new family that was also getting killed off by abby
These next few hours of playing the game had me well killing abby every chance I got. Well when it was finally all said and done I was sick of the game, the story had put me off. I finally was at the point that I was able to avenge joel and abby new family but as the final moment where ellie had the upper hand she let abby go
Ellie let the murder go after killing all of the people that where responsible for killing joel. Let go of the person that actually killed him. I said **** this game and took it to my local game stop to get a better game.
For the graphics and the little actually game play gives it the + but due to a waist of time of a story and a journey that's at a - so I think a 3 out of 10 is about right. That story was ruin. The game made me feel like everything I did was bad. It force me to play a character I didn't like. And killed off a character for the sake of drama. For the last part it completely destroyed all of your efforts in the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start out by saying I was all into the story line initially, essentially boiling down to a tale of revenge. It was dark, violent, depressing and I was all for it. I think if anything The Last of Us I and II gave a pretty realistic view that the world is more grey than anything, your choices have consequences and your story isn't always going to end happily. That being said, I felt like this game betrayed you in the end. As I mentioned before, this is a tale of revenge, you go through a lot as Ellie, as soon as Joel dies (his death btw, though I wished was more ceremonious in nature and wished he went out in a better way, I think fits the whole narrative that when your sins catch up to you, you go out in a bad, uncompromising, terrible way. It happens in real life all the time so I had no problems with Joel's death at all...loose giving away of personal info. and all aside). Ellie suffers the sting of revenge, the cost and toll it puts on you to hunt down someone. So you build up all this hate for Abby, feel for Ellie as someone hunting down the person who killed the closest thing to a father that she had and then the game forces you to play as Abby. That's right, flip how you feel about this character immediately and see her side of the story. Well, sorry, I can't and won't do that. I immediately became emotionally unattached to the game. Why would I want to take control of someone who I just spent the majority of the game hating? Someone I really needed to see dead to fulfill this story of revenge. So at the first opportunity to run Abby into Ellie or religious fanatics or infected that I got, I did it. Over and over and over and over and over again, just so I could see her die. I have no desire to understand Abby's side of things. I have no desire to see her humanized because everyone is the hero of their own story. I'm here for the story of Ellie and Joel. I get why Abby did it. She was fully justified in her actions and her reason for revenge, but that doesn't change the fact I want this character dead with every fiber of my being because she took Joel away in such a bad, gruesome way. He deserved better and she deserves to die for it.

The Last of Us II isn't some redemption arc, from the start you're expecting some pretty messed up stuff. I mean, Ellie kills a pregnant chick for god's sake on her path of revenge. This game is not one that ends well, but I would have fully expected the developers and Neil Druckmann to at least give the fans the satisfaction of completing the revenge arc and seeing Abby die by Ellie's hands. BUT NO! ELLIE LETS HER GO! Are you kidding me?! That's how you choose to end this game? Ellie literally has nothing to show for any of this, her path of revenge made her lose everything and everyone in her life. Unbelievable. What was any of this for if you don't kill Abby? Nothing you did, all the loss and suffering means nothing. I can understand all the other decisions of the game if Abby falls to Ellie but because Abby lives it's like I may have just stayed in Jackson, in the settlement and lived out the rest of my days. Honestly if the game was going to let Abby live, it should have given the player the option to spare her life or end it. I know what I would have chosen, without a moment's hesitation...this is for Joel! Drowns Abby. Other than being forced to play as Abby and the horrible ending, everything else about the game is what you loved about the first game. The graphics, music, motion capture...all beautiful. Sure, no new game play exists but what I was here for is the story. The best parts of The Last of Us II are the best parts of The Last of Us, the interactions between Ellie and Joel, though this time it's relegated to cut scenes and movie flashbacks. Don't expect any game play between the two. Which, honestly I wish there were parts early on in the game where they put in clearing out an infected horde or something to get the feeling of Ellie and Joel teaming up and showing some great teamwork but alas, you'll have to get your Ellie and Joel interactions through cut scenes, which they really work, whether it's a happy or sad flashback, their relationship is why you're here to see what happened between them and like the feel of the game, it's very grey. Lost opportunity, wishing things could have been said differently or just made more time before it was too late to do so, all very realistic tones that we can relate with. But I just don't know if any of that, for as great as it was, can over come having to play as Abby and the terrible end. A shame, I think this game really could have been something special. Something that added to this series, but somewhere people lost sight and wanted to be too artsy with it all. You need to follow through on your core fundamentals and in this tale of revenge, you were not given that satisfaction and thus, the story and end means nothing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoy playing the game for the first time at least for the first half of the game.

Decisions about Joel's character and his death may be controversial and might be a little bit out of character and not be logical, but I could accept it and they bothered me only a bit. I mean it succeeded making me feel certain emotions as anger sadness and really feel what ellie was going Trough.

Starting of your journey of revenge somehow never felt satisfying though, because Tommy set off in front of you and you were following his path. As you follow the journey and kill some of main-enemies Abbys friends you find yourself being found by her instead and killing Jesse one of your companions. Now the game somehow starts to lose track of its own story and pacing as you now play the past 3 days again out of Abbys perspective. It takes you about 10-15 hours playing her story just realizing in the end it didn't quite add up something to the plot. It somehow felt like you were going on a never ending side-quest. On her journey you should start to sympathize with her or at least understand her character, opinions and choices she made. Well it might worked for some people but for me it quite didn't. I didn't really care about her story as I could already think that she had her reasons killing Joel and that she too has fears, has friend she likes and has a backstory. Speaking of backstory you have some very well written and beautiful flashbacks both from ellie and Abby. They really did something to the player and brought something to the story as making things clear. But the placement of them throughout the story made you completely lose track of what your goals in the present timeline were. As you come back from a flashback it always was like ok where am I? What is happening now? After completing the 3 days from Abbys perspective and fighting ellie in her hideout, which really hurts. If you think of doing your best to try to kill the character you so much love, I understand what ND was trying to achieve but in this case the gameplay it forces you to play is not what you wanted at this moment. After Abby lets you(ellie) and Dina live the story makes a jump to a farmhouse where Dina and you and her baby JJ live a happy life and enjoy what you have got. The relationship is beautiful and in my opinion the game could have ended right there and it would be a quite acceptable game with only a few issues.

But someday Tommy shows up who is kind of disabled Trough the encounter with Abby and makes you feel bad for not finishing the job and killing Abby. Ellie doesn't want to and Dina tells Tommy to leave. Ellie wakes up in the night and out of nowhere makes a 180 and switches to the opinion she has to find Abby and kill her. Playing the rest of the game felt pointless and not necessary as you again hunt down Abby to find her in a bad condition and fighting her. In the fight she bites off 2 of your fingers but you still manage to win the battle. As you are drowning her ellie sees a memory of Joel which leads her to let Abby alive and spare her. At that point I didn't even care anymore about what is happening to Abby. She could be alive or dead and it wouldn't change anything. But to be honest it would be logical to kill her after a minute before she bit off 2 of your fingers and the memory of Joel should give you the last shot to actually killing her cause you can't see him nomore cause of her. She is the reason for his death You get back to the farmhouse to find it abandoned. You try to play the guitar in memory of Joel but you can't cause of your 2 missing fingers. Ellie leaves the house ending up with nothing at all. Which is not fair in my opinion. The story was hell of emotional but had to much stuff going on about new characters that didn't develop throughout the game. Characters hadn't backstorys and nothing that makes them rememberable. Then they get killed in pathetic ways and the game never mentions them ever again as if they didn't exist. It is emotional for sure It looks beautiful for sure The gameplay is good but only a little improved from the first game which wasn't a problem for me at all cause I really like it. The story is what is the gamebreaker here. Characters are not well written and do illogical decisions. It feels all over the place, loses its pacing and feels forced. It's like the developer did this. We have a certain idea. To achieve this idea we force characters to do that and this. When in my opinion it should be like this. The character is in this situation. How would this character react and how would it affect the story and what would be the consequences of his or her reaction. Would be a lot better and would feel much more logical and realistic. You can say so much more but I only got 5000 digits so all in all. Gameplay 8/10
    Grapics 9.5/10
    Story 3/10
    Flawless/glitchless 8/10

Expand

Some of my views still remain positive, graphics, music etc are still good and deserve a better score in isolation.

My biggest beef with the game is it's infuriating linearity and uses too many cut scenes. In new game plus I skipped the majority of the cutscenes and obviously it is normally slightly faster as you know what is coming. IT IS 6 hrs and 30 mins SHORTER..The total playing time for both play throughs is less than 48 hours. AND I AM A SLOW PLAYER.

The linearity of the game seriously gets frustrating. I have played many of the large open world games of recent years and to come back to something this restrictive was a huge disappointment.
They have had 7 years to come up with something better than this. There is no getting lost in this game as it won’t let you go off the path it forces you to take.

The story and characters all have issues Some of them quite serious and annoying. They get more noticeable in a second play through. . No spoilers. Play the game and decide for yourself.

They have even used recycled scenarios from the first game. This is just plain lazy and an insult to the paying gaming community that has to suffer it.

All in all I was super disappointed in this game. I was so looking forward to it and preordered it months ago. I wish I hadn't. I would still have played the game to see what it was like, but would have waited until it was a lot better value for the money.

i did enjoy playing parts of the game, but these in no way make up for the lazy game design and bad character narrative.

IF THIS IS THE BEST IT GETS I HOPE THAT THIS IS ‘THE LAST OF THE LAST OF US ‘.

The story is ok, but the ending just renders the entire thing a moot point, it's pointless and has no pay off.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well. This was something else entirely that i expected. From Naughty Dog it was very brave and unexpected move to craft a sequel like this. To begin with story was different and refreshing for me. It makes a statement. While it is not one of the best stories it still stands out. And will be story that will not be forgotten. There are some awesome moments as well as some sad and disturbing moments. It is clever in it's own way, but i do not like the way it is told. Something similar to Beyond: Two Souls. Still doesn't make it entirely bad. I see this story as bit above average for my taste. Surely for many people this will disappoint depending on taste. For me this was actually new and unique experience that i haven't experienced and it gives me more than it takes.

Gameplay was fantastic. It was exiting and engaging. It was bit different from previous game. It actually made you feel under pressure. At some point having a oppressive moments where you not a moment felt safe. There were some unexpected jump scare moments as well. Camera angles made you feel uncomfortable on purpose that made you feel even less safe. It also was quite challenging even in medium difficulty. In the end it was something that i will remember for long.

Graphics were awesome. They're likely best we will see in this generation of consoles. For example forests felt very realistic there being plants a lot and being cramped. Textures were great and detailed. Animations were perfected. Facial animations showed at some scenes how far they've gotten not only in cutscenes but in gameplay as well. Actually you could not tell much difference from gameplay and cutscenes and the transfer was so smooth. Every setting of areas you get to play were great and unforgettable.

Shortly story was unique, different and unexpected. It was not bad but not excellent either. Gameplay and graphics were actually biggest strength of this game.

Unfortunately the parts that are bad, are just terrible. In the first game, we're shown just how careful Joey is, and by extension, Tommy. There os no excuse for how they ended up in such a scenario. Maybe if Abby had been the one to save them, then they would have more reason to trust them.
I will say that the graphics and gameplay are sublime, in my opinion, but in a story driven game, those can only get you so far. If you're just here for some mindless action, and aren't at all interested in the story, this game could probably be an 8 out of 10, but if like most of us, you wanted story, 4 is the best I can give.

Don’t get distracted from what you expected from the story or even worse because they dared to show flawed humans or people who are different than yourself. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A 7 year in the making fan fiction based off the first game. The characters keep no traits from the previous game. Joel's death is an insult to the character established previously, likewise for Tommy.

At the end of the game it kept me contemplating on what i actually achieved, what new story got unraveled, and whether i actually care for more. As far as I'm concerned Ellie and Joel's story ended in the first game.

Playing as Joel's killer is also cringy. Ellie knows killing is wrong and expresses disgust in her actions when killing human beings, often on the verge of vomiting. Abby is just evil, has no remorse for her actions, no humanity and no empathy.

The whole issue of infected is not touched upon in the slightest. Infected are just trash mobs to slow down your pace while offering no significance to the plot. Ellies immunity also has no relevance except for the two times she uses it to her advantage.

    ----

Credit where credit is due, the graphics, animation and gameplay is flawless although repetitive, but that's not a problem.
+ Abby's toolset is more enjoyable to play especially with her brute force. Punching infected to death was highly satisfying, although questionable with regards to safety.

After playing Abby for quite a while and saw the struggles she faced, I was very sad when they both fight at the beach. Killing each other in order to get revenge would bring us nothing other than self satisfaction. If Abby didn't spare Ellie's life in the theater, most likely she will be dead hanged at the beach. But she did and from my perspective, Ellie came and "saved" her from death. It's a reward for Abby for doing so.Ellie spared Abby's life as well. Which might be in her favour who knows when. I really hope we can see TLOU3 with Abby+Ellie combo but seeing the backlash ot received, it'll be foolish for naughty dog to continue the development for this game.

The Last Of Us Part 2 transcends anything I ever have played, the level of immersion and depth that the world offers is truly unsettling. Whether or not you 'agree' with the way the story was told, I think it's very hard to deny that Naughty Dog has created a world that is as viscous as a post-apocalyptic world should be.

I don't claim to understand most of the major decisions in the games storytelling, but I believe that's the objective. It doesn't want to come across as a story that has a person controlling it. It wants to be a soul crushing as possible to reinforce the fact that anything can happen to anyone at any time. It leaves you with a massive sense of unease for the safety of the characters you love.

I hear a lot points made about the feeling of having some sort of agenda forced on to you. I didn't feel that at all. If you have a problem with two women/men kissing and being in a loving relationship, then I would ask you to leave the 1900's and catch up to the rest of us in 2020.

Any fan of the first game should just pretend that this sequel doesn't exist since its a disgrace to the first one and an insult to the people who waited 7 years to experience another game with these characters.

In addition to good graphics, there are no 3-5 levels of prescription in the game, the gameplay gets bored very quickly. WOW does not produce an effect, it is not worth spending money on it.

As Manny spits on Joel dead body (simbolicly looking like Neil) thats how Neil spits to everything good that he made in a first game.Gameplay didnt progress, same thing over and over, but nothing of that wouldn matter if story was good. When l realized l have to play like Abby something inside me broke. That was it. My son is 9 and he would make a better plot. I feel betrayed, cheated and sorry for being so stupid and by this at relese date, couse lf l knew all this and the way the ND communicate whit there funs l would not even consider to give my many for trash. Yes lm a homofobic couse you say so, lm a virgin and all other things you say. You betrayed real fans of the game and in a future thats gonna bite you. Expand

A huge disappointment. I can't believe I've waited for this utter trash for so long. The plot, the characters that we loved? All ruined. The game has good graphics, however, not gonna lie. The graphics alone though cannot make me love the game. Who would have thought?
I doubt I'm gonna buy any more games from Naughty Dog as long as Neil Duckman is in charge.

    I give it 1/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The low score is mostly from disappointment along with the poor story. I don't mind the bleakness or the revenge aspects. Infact, I like the fact that Ellie sees red after the infamous death scene. But this could have been something so much greater, and Druckmann decided to bait and switch and make statements that fall flat. Other than that, the graphics are phenomenal. Sound design is great, music is fantastic and most technical aspects are on par with anything else out there. Not only is this is the end of the console's life cycle but Naughty Dog had all the time in the world and Sony's blank check to get this done now they originally imagined, so I'd expect it be at this level. As far as the gameplay is concerned, it is almost exactly the same as the first, which isn't necessarily a fault, but it's not great either. But for a narrative driven game, they should have done better. Expand

the game is excellent in all technical aspects, however unlike its predecessor, the last of us part 2 presents a disappointing story with an unworthy ending of the characters of the franchise.

The story and gameplay gave me as much if not more emotions as the first part. And that's always the win in my book. Great game. I applaud the Naughty Dog and Niel Druckman for not catering to their fan base and making something that stands out from any expected scenario for a sequel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The hard truth is, ND is not progressive, they use the suffering of minorities to create further divide for marketing. Obviously the story was bad, the gameplay was bland and unoriginal, and the graphics were great, but you’ll find this in many other reviews. For me, I was also very disappointed in this game that was being announced as “overly progressive”. Black representation was poor (every black character was a villain/opponent that got brutally murdered by white woman, and they had zero redeeming qualities, it honestly looked racist), asian characters were an obstacle to the white characters that resulted in problems arising, or completely tossed away with zero care like Jessie who dies and is never brought up again (not to mention Ellie previously cracking a joke that she’s not interested in him because he’s asian), the back story to the trans character Lev was that he changed his gender from female to male because he was opposed to marrying a cult elder, not because he was uncomfortable with his body. And the lesbian relationship between Ellie and Dina felt like a bad, early 2000’s TV drama where neither of them could be happy. Naughty Dog has a poor history of racial issues in games. With a team led by a majority of straight, white cis-males, them cashing in on causing divide with progressive issues they don’t understand is disgusting. When the leaks happened, and everyone was making disgusting remarks about the trans community because they thought Abby was transgender (as ND randomly decided to make her masculine, and had announced a trans character but didn’t name who), both Neil Druckmann and ND refused to shut down the hate by telling people they were wrong, and instead waited until after the game released for a “Gotcha bigots, you were wrong the whole time!” moment, thanks Neil, the LGBT community appreciates you putting your “art” over the suffering of minorities. If people are under the impression Abby is trans, and she killed the previous games protagonist, people were going to hate on her for any reason they could find. I’m currently under the impression now that those leaks were from ND themselves and it was all just a marketing stint, clearly hasn’t effected the sales. A progressive company doesn’t throw away a lead female writer two years into a project. A progressive company doesn’t cover up sexual assault/harassment from their employees and throw NDA’s around monthly. A progressive company doesn’t treat their workers like crap resulting in layoffs and people leaving on a weekly basis. A progressive company doesn’t cast a white woman as a black woman (Laura Bailey in UC4) without telling the actress, resulting in her getting the negative response for taking the role. And most assurable, a progressive company doesn’t make a game like TLOU 2 that insults the very people it’s meant to be “pandering” to. But don’t get me wrong, ND is neither progressive nor conservative, they’re just terrible people cashing in on our outrage, thanks to the assumption this is the only game with LGBT characters. If you want a game with good LGBT representation (many exist), I recommend Life is Strange and Celeste, much better games with much better stories. And lastly, the LGBT community, people of different races, and all minorities just want one thing, acceptance. The Last of Us Part 2 doesn’t offer that, it just shows you how white straight men view us, as disposable pawns. 1/10, gets a single point for graphics, (although the lighting in dark areas could have been improved, characters lit up like glow sticks). The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
