I cannot believe that this game treats the idea that revenge leads to more revenge as though it’s some kind of profound concept. Part 2 is just a bleak story in a bleak world with nothing particularly original to say.
None of the main plot points in this game feel deserved.
Naughty dog seriously took the easy way out this time. It's not brave or courageous. It's cheap

Just finished the game here and what I will say is that the gameplay is a big improvement over The Last Of Us 1 but unfortunately for Naughty Dog that's not really what people loved about The Last Of Us. Neil Druckmann in all his writing wisdom is trying to wedge a square into a circular hole by forcing his politics into a game about a zombie apocalypse.

Throughout many sections of the game I found myself audibly groaning at the obvious attempts to make some sort of forced political statement, if I cannot get a refund for this game I am going to be deeply dissapointed but I do not expect I will be able to get one. The story is laughably weak and given that that was the focus of the original it simply cannot live up to that. After all of this I'm going to say that I consider The Last Of Us 2 to be non-canon and I think that Neil Druckmann has to work with adult supervision or else he will butcher another beloved Naughty Dog IP.

After playing this I felt angry, confused and insulted that a game company would feel that this is acceptable to do. How do you go from a great first installment with an amazing touching story and characters to suddenly turn full SJW and make garbage like this. This is the future of identity politics in gaming. the game The Last of us II has magnificent scenery but all the work was spoiled by the story with empty characters and boring conversations during the game. The way Joel was treated in that game was the worst idea they could have chosen, Ellie was boring and the sex scenes were unnecessary. And Abby
is the most boring character in the game. Note 2

This is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous and painful to even hear about tbh, left alone to actually play it, I mean even Ellie in the first game knew to stay vigilant and defensive in the first encounter with David. How dare Naught Dog just gave my old man Joel such an undignified death??
This is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. I can still remember the goods days with the first game a few years ago back when I was in highschool and after all these year of waiting my man was killed by a witless woman in the first few hours into the game. No matter what the background story of that woman is, I simply DO NOT CARE ANYMORE. The only regret is I wasn't able to kill EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the hospital building back in the ending of the last game.
Besides not even giving the option to avenge Joel is like John Wick lets the brat who killed his dog live after all the pursuit and battlescar he suffered which makes completely NO sense.

But never expect he die for nothing or should I say die because saved wrong person. Abby killed almost everybody from two camps to protect the boy, why? because he saved her. So why u can't give Joel a chance, at least let him die without pain. Then Ellie let her live because of what? Is she got Stockholm syndrome or something? She has no reason to let her live under that world background. This is a game not real world, "the right thing rules" doesn't have to apply in this game. TLOUS2 is the only console game I have requested a refund . I bought the original on the PS3, this sequel is a betrayal to the fans. I truly pity people who aren't able to refund their money. I’m actually ok with sexual minorities, feminism and anyone else included in this story.( Long and happy you live, guys!) Don’t even try to tell that the game is hated because of people’s intolerance. There are still many people who have respect and empathy. The story is awful, because it lost the beloved character. There’s no sense to move forward after this scene. This game lefts nothing but despair and feeling that’s there’s no hope. I don’t like new character Ebby for only one reason - she killed Joel. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is not just a sequel, but the continuation of the story from the first game. That’s why it’s called The Last of Us: Part II. I fell in love with the first game. The journey of Joel, from loving father, to broken man, to hardened survivor, to finally allowing himself to open back up again to this little girl... Ellie made Joel whole again.

However, in Part II, we get answers to the hard questions we were left with in Part I. How would Ellie respond if she found out the truth about Salt Lake, and what were, if any, the repercussions of Joel’s actions?

The monsters in Pittsburgh, who ambushed Joel and Ellie, the ones who would murder people in the streets just to take their shoes and whatever else they could find... Joel admits that the reason he knew it was a trap was because he had been on both sides. It’s part of what created such a division between he and Tommy years prior to meeting Ellie. What they had to do to survive was awful. Many innocent people died, because, as Joel put it, it was either them or him.

That comes back to haunt him, in a way that is truly unimaginable to us, as gamers. And it hurts. What is done to Joel - a character I related with - was so cruel, and cold, and ruthless, and done without a second thought. It’s what puts us in Ellie’s shoes. We want revenge, and we want it now.

However, what Naughty Dog does so well in this game is to show us that cycle of loss, revenge and violence, in a way we never got to see in the first game. The path Ellie takes to get “justice” is paralleled with Abby’s path for “justice” on the man who took her Joel... her father. Abby found him dead in a pool of his own blood, along with many of the people she called family. They were killed without remorse, without hesitation, by a man named Joel Miller.

The Last Of Us: Part II forces us to look at its world and see it’s far less black and white than we would have liked to have believed, even though we knew it wasn’t.

In the end, I knew I didn’t want to see Ellie go down the same path Joel did... and Joel didn’t want that for her either. In fact, it was the last thing he would’ve wanted. He fought for her, he did things that, yes, were horrible... for her, so that she could live her life... and he’d do it all over the same way. Because, to him, she was his world, and he wanted her to experience the life that Sarah never got the chance to.

In the end... the very end... Ellie saw that. She felt the love Joel had for her, and it gave her the strength, in her most darkest moment, to let go. It’s the same strength Ellie unknowingly gave Joel 4 years prior, and it was love, and not revenge, that granted it.

I, for one, am glad she found that strength before it was too late. She saved Joel, and Joel saved her.

Like its predecessor, it was released on the final leg of the console and here, Naughty Dog pulls all the stops: stupendous graphics, great production values and updated game play mechanics. Obviously, it's a must have yet be warned, LOU 2 approaches the apocalypse in a very dour and realistic manner, and it is not a feel good game in any way. The game shoehorns in a new character that is unlikable, does horrible things from the get-go, and then forces you to play as her for half the game in an attempt to get you to sympathize with her story. I didn't. Due to my dislike of her, her sections in the game felt incredibly boring and drawn out, ultimately making this a chore to play.

Graphically, the game is absolutely beautiful. Voice acting is top-notch, animations are well done - as expected from a big budget production game.

Gameplay-wise, nothing has really been changed from the original, and rather, it seems as though there were less environmental puzzles. A jump feature was added in that I found to be useless.

But the main appeal in the original was the story that had you invested into these characters. That gets thrown out the window here, as any character development you saw previously gets undone by terrible writing.

Gorgeous visuals can't save this mess of a story, which unfortunately adds up to it being a huge waste of both your time and money.

In the last of us part 2 , Naughty dog seem to rewrite Joel to just become a clueless dumb-ass which is not the Joel we know and love. Then we dont even play as them the whole game. so its just a terribly written game Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a huge fan of the story behind The Last of Us Part 1, the 2nd addition to the story and franchise just leaves me in disgust. A lot of things are PHENOMENAL. The intro for instance was a genius of artwork - however what followed such a STRONG and EMOTIONAL opening to The Last of Us Part 2 only ends in what I mentioned earlier - disgust.

    Pros:
    - Beautiful set pieces, graphics, all of the usual Naughty Dog things.
    - More sense of an "open world" exploration to the game.
    - Well realized world building.

    Cons:
-The centerpiece of the game. The story.
-Contradictory game play to the story building cinematics
    > How are we gonna see Ellie break down in panic and trauma after killing certain people in cut scenes after she MERCILESSLY butchered down hundreds of people in quick fashion as if it was the normal daily cup of joe for the day? This did not make sense and makes the player feel at odds with what Naughty Dog is trying to convey.
-Obvious plot holes and synchronization issues to the characters we KNEW and LOVED from part 1.
    > You're trying to tell me Joel, the killing machine himself with very little trust in ANYONE'S intentions (rightfully so in the cruel and grim world The Last of us Part 1 builds) is going to help a stranger that is on their patrol grounds and then go to THEIR HIDEOUT in an EXTREMELY VULNERABLE FASHION when Abby CONFIRMS THEY ARE ARMED AND HAVE A PERIMETER? This made absolutely no sense and was the worst way to introduce a moment of extreme gravity. It's not that it was done, it's HOW it was done. This is such a shame.

It's a shame this game will make GOTY nominations and receive a ton of rewards due to it's progressive and LGBTQ themes that are heavily littered through-out the game. These concepts and real life political topics are abused by game developers to 1. Shield themselves from negative reception, because "The people who dislike it are just bigots." and 2. The people who set up these rewards tend to LOVE it, and they (Naughty Dog) KNOW that. This is a spit in the face to the LBGTQ community and some realize that they are only being used as a shield for award nominations / GOTY nominations.

I can only give this game, as it is STORY CENTRIC, a 3 out of 10 at best. I'm sorry, and this sequel deeply disappointing me, as a prior HUGE fan of Naughty Dog.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here comes a legit review from someone that' sees the game for what it wants to say to the players. Something that's overlooked because you can't see clearly when you're disappointed and angry about the game.

The game is beautiful. A very complex story. Very hard to sink in. It kicks off with you being angry that one of your favorite characters gets killed so early in the game. I was too. I didn't like Abby at first. There were moments I wanted to give up playing because I didn't want to play her for so many hours. But I get why ND did this.
Abby kills Joel because he killed her father. The only one that could make a vaccine to save the world. Ellie seeks revenge now too and kills Abby's friends. Abby finds out about their deaths. She later finds where they are and kills Jesse, nearly kills Tommy, Dina and Ellie. Saved by Lev (the kid Abby has chosen to look after) that didn't approve of her actions. Revenge is a never ending circle.
You get to play as Abby and see a whole other side of her. Her life story. Purpose? To change the players view of her and forgive her. She had a big character development and so has Ellie and I'll get to that.
You get to see how Abby changes in the game when she chooses to take care of two kids over her own crew (The WLF). Also the kids were Scars. The WLF and Scars are fighting each other. One of the kids gets killed bu WLF soldiers and so would the other kid if Abby didn't stand in their way. She defied orders to step aside to protect the kid. This reminds me of how Joel starts to see Ellie as a daughter and takes care of her. You get to play Joel but in a different body.
Now Ellie hunts down Abby again. Finds her strapped to a pole at a beach. She was exhausted. She lost a lot of muscle mass. Ellie pities her and cuts her down. Abby goes to cut down the kid that was also at the beach. She later carries him and goes for the boat at the shore. Ellie later gets a flash back of Joel of how he died and she couldn't let Abby go. Abby didn't want to fight, she only wanted to take care of the kid. Ellie later threatens to hurt the kid which is unlike Ellie. They start to fight and Ellie has the chance to end it all but chooses not to. She lets Abby go free. Ellie made peace with her demons. She didn't any longer care after all hard work just to kill her. It was not worth it. When you think about it Ellie was in the same position as Abby was before she killed Joel. She probably imagined her of the same situation and chose not to be just like her back then. She chose to be better. Imagining the kid would lose a sister figure. I loved the fact that Ellie let her go. Abby is a good person.
Ellie later returns home with Dina and their baby gone with only Joels guitar left. She's unable to play because of the loss of her two fingers. She leaves the guitar that symbolises that she leaves Joel's memory behind. And she walks away.
People are just too angry to see this. They look at it too simple. This is a complex story. A beautiful story. It wants to teach that there's much more than just killing someone for revenge. That person also has a life and people they care about. It's not so simple. The game wants us to think clear and forgive. For what is right. Not for what would feel right when eventually nothing good will come out of it. It's easy to hate someone. It's harder to forgive someone. Be stronger like Ellie.

    Graphics really good.
    Audio really good.
Gameplay feels like the last of us 1 and that's good
Story is too complex for most people to comprehend. For me it's really good
All the crafting options you get to choose from is really good
New kind of skill trees. Really good
Character story and development. Some too simple and some really good.

Understandably, the game has received a lot of backlash upon its release from gamers due to the first entry's main protagonist Joel being slaughtered within the first two hours of the game. As a testament to the first entry, fans have developed a personal connection to the character of Joel and having them play as his killer adds extra salt to the wound. At the time me writing this, a major conception for fans is that what they love is sacred and as consumers they are entitled for it go unspoiled. In light of this, risky choices for franchises are generally written off as "subverting expectations" with the implication that nothing lies deeper than the desire of the writers to shock. This recent surge of narrative storytelling is generally inclusive of "diverse" (POC, LGBTIQ) characters who some members of fanbases direct their contempt of storytelling in modern media towards. For me personally TLoU (and really any franchise at large) is not a sacred cow and I'd much rather enjoy something based on the merits of what it is rather than what I think it should be. On with the review.

Gameplay: Despite a marketing campaign built around players feeling bad for their actions, I failed to feel so every time I took an NPCs life. It is a still a videogame with stealth mechanics and weapon modding which I enjoyed playing. No matter how many shades of realism and personalising you coat NPCs with, thinking it's not fun to kill defeats the purpose of playing videogames. Admittedly the gameplay isn't too large a departure from typical Naughty Dog fare (how many **** boosts have we given during the Uncharted series?) and I found aiming to be especially grating to begin with, however as time goes on and you improve skill sets the game itself becomes more functional and enjoyable. Sure, I didn't like Abbie as a person but I probably enjoyed playing her over Ellie when utilizing a stacked weapon roster. The game has a runtime of around 25 hours and despite being a "movie game" I believe to ND's credit they included a lot of gameplay this time around. IF you were to skip all cutscenes I'd imagine there'd still be roughly 15+ hours playtime. Considering this is a third person shooter and not an RPG, that's not too bad.

Soundtrack: Purposefully done so, the soundtrack is quite minimal with music only popping up for enemy encounters and story beats. This works to the game's favour.
Level design: In a world of open world gaming, ND are probably one of the few AAA companies to keep at delivering a linear game experience. The levels in TLoU2 are much more expansive than usual and allow more room for optional exploration. The addition of map space leads to the world building to feel more organic and lived in. Of course players still have to get from A to B but it somewhat feels less contrived. A good majority of the game is simple wide post apocalyptic wastelands and scenic landscapes. Accompanying these with NPC aliies can be enjoyable however going through long stretches of wasteland solo can feel lonely. it is worth noting that TLoU2 is not without some of the most fantastic levels and big budget set pieces I've ever come across from AAA games at their peak. Visually the whole experience looks fantastic and in order to gain a more movie like effect, I'm personally a fan of the film grain filtering the presentation throughout.

Story: TLoU2 is a revenge story sharing similarity with subgenre cohorts such as the Sympathy Trilogy, They Call Her One Eye etc. As a genre exercise it is cruel and nihilistic keeping in line with the genre's mainstay message that revenge hurts the one executing it just as much as the one who receives it. There are flashbacks to better times, there are reminders of the anguish the characters suffer and there is the fact that the grudge is all encompassing - preventing both Abbie and Ellie to see the love they have right in front of them. Sometimes this is heavy handed and other times its executed well. This aside, TLoU2 is wholly focused on telling its story and throughout its runtime spares little time for deviation. The majority of it feels essential to complete its structure. Now does that mean we have to agree with the characters? No. Do we have to even like the characters? No. Despite botched attempts to make you empathize, I would still argue no. I hope that one day audiences will grow to realize that fiction does not need to to tell their personal story and self inserting is erased. Maybe then, with an open mind we can bear witness to what unfolds around us and not feel the need to control it. Funnily enough that's what this game is about: control.
