The story is great and don't let someone who only played the first 5 hours turn you off the game, the murder of Joel really sets the tone of the game. The overall story is just about revenge and loss which fits the game and the world well, with the deaths of many characters really just happening out of nowhere showing the amount of loss and sadness in the game. by the way, I didn't get the game spoiled for myself and I'm not going to have a cry over the LGBT stuff. In the beginning we are lead to believe we will go on this harsh journey to bring justice to beloved Joel, just to forced to play as the insufferable villain and then forced to let them go after a terrible flashback story of the character that could of been written out all together. It seems the writers really were being lazy on this one cause the whole story doesnt make any sense. Why did the antagonist linger on Joel for this long instead of surviving and how come they survive the long journey when many parish. Why are the infected treated like such a side piece and not a main enemy. The characters they feel so hollow inside and out. Even playing the game feels like some cheap chinese knock off. Do not get me wrong, the story has it's moments and I love the flashbacks fro Joel and Ellie. But what the f*** was I playing as Abby for HALF OF THE GAME? The Last Of Us is The Last Of Us because of Joel and Ellie. I was playing as Joel's killer for most of the game. Is ND trying to make me feel bad for Abby? Like tf? SHE KILLED JOEL. The story could have been so much different. But I do like the moments in the story.

Fantastic graphics, extremely instigating and surprising narrative, intense battles, well constructed characters, mega coherent soundtrack, jaw-dropping ambiance... Here, in this section of metacritic users, we have a low grade of the game by the gamer community for simple and stupid reasons: a good part of the community is and prejudiced, involving here homophobia, misogyny and sexism. Just note: the various excuses to criticize the game and classify it with a low grade have as their core precisely the fact that the main character is a strong woman who is a lesbian.

The narrative basically revolves around the development of this character -- and this study is much more artistic than purely commercial. It's amazing to see how some gamers (mostly straight men like me) seem to live in the "fairytale world of the straight prince".

Things like "This character couldn't die because he was the alpha man; without him the narrative wouldn't turn..." and "Ew! Ellie is gay" are common on top of a game that proposes to adopt a fantastic and dystopian style of realism in almost all its fields, with a study of narrative and realistic character arc, in which anything can happen (such as, for example, the event that motivates Ellie's revenge). The very line of diverse individuality of the characters is realistic.

It is extremely sad to see the gamer community arm in arm with the intention of destroying a game for infantilized reasons (the "Disney world" of the straight and prejudiced man) and of lowering the gender and stigmatizing the sexual orientation of a character. All with the medieval ignorance of a person who wants to extend his prejudice and anachronistic stupidity to the world of art.

Understand: realistic art and the study of characters seek to reflect precisely the veins of our own reality; the everyday, the common, the mundane, the plural and diverse society needs to be portrayed. The real world needs to be felt within realistic fiction. And the game does that with mastery. But it is being attacked by simply normalizing something that is already normal and extremely real.

Here, it's interesting to see how well that reality is mirrored in the narrative and characters of the game. After all, this stupidly medieval and prejudiced gamer community could easily be translated in the game itself as "Serafitas".

Grow up gamer community: study, reflect, stimulate mirror neurons and start to better understand the real world.

    very good and fun.

the biggest weakness, which also worsens the whole game. The game tries to make you feel bad permanently with many things. You play a large part as the villain, which would not be so bad if the person had at least a little bit of charisma or wasn't just interested in me wishing her an agonizing death.
You hurt and sometimes kill as villain important and endearing characters that you couldn't prevent and that's another thing that makes the game worse. You hardly ever play important moments in the game yourself! Sometimes you just hit the hit button or just watch the cutscene for two minutes where the important things happen. without you being allowed to decide anything. Often these are decisions that are exactly the opposite of how you would do it because the game becomes even more unpleasant, which is why it never felt like you were controlling the character of a story game, but of a simple action game. ND wants you to feel bad, so gameplay, story and the universe of tlou had to suffer. Many important characters have died in this part and will never return and the part cannot be rewritten or replaced. The entire world of tlou is almost destroyed with one game. This is why i give 4 out of 10.

That’s human nature. There was no happy ending to begin with. Did I like it? Did I enjoy it? No, I didn’t. Do I respect the hell out of this game? I sincerely do, and if you yourself can’t even see how well of a mature product this is, then it’s probably just your inability to look over the fact that you’re not getting what you want. I loved the first game and its characters as much as everyone and knew it was a game that was going to stick with me for a long time, if not for life. But I get why Naughty Dog went the direction they did with this game. In my opinion, the story of TLOU2 perfectly captures the tragedy and brutality of the post-apocalypse world they created. That there are repercussions for the decisions made in the first game and this game. Not many games (besides Telltale games) do that, show the perspectives of those who are hurt by the main character’s actions. Many people will disagree, but I kind of respect Naughty Dog for making these major story decisions and they probably knew it piss off the fanbase of this franchise. I’m not saying that the story is perfect, there is definitely that “political correctedness” that other people despise, I don’t mind some of it but there is a little bit too much here and it threw me off in terms of “jeez, okay we are in pretentious territory here”. Also, some characters make really weird decisions that can be out of character and don’t make sense disregarding the build-up of some tragic events. I can say that this game can get depressing and there is so many emotional moments with joyful moments so far few in between. Which might turn some people off. Despite these downfalls, this story was great enough to keep me going and keep me immersed. Again, like the first, it is a story that will stick with me. I think people should give this game’s story a chance.

I had bit of a long section for the story part of the game because it is narrative-driven, but I should also speak about the gameplay and graphics. Combat and stealth sections are tension-filled and can be really challenging, which I appreciate. Naughty Dog improved in terms of adding realism to the combat sequences as you can get knocked down or flinch when you get shot, completely throwing your aim off. I played on the regular difficulty and I got my ass kicked a lot. Enemy human AI is pretty smart and will try to flank you, especially dudes with melee weapons. Moreover, the infected sections are still creepy and tense as always with some new enemy types to keep it challenging. I plan to play on the hardest difficulty to make resources scarcer, as I felt on the regular difficulty resources was never really that scarce despite what gameplay videos have said. They even added a feature where you make your own custom difficulty which is pretty cool.

Lastly, the graphics are amazing, as expected of recent Naughty Dog titles, so good that your PS4 will sound like a motorcycle (IDK if that’s a good thing). The facial animations are on point in combat and in cutscenes, in particular the combat, the facial animations add so much realism if you can pay attention and adding to the brutality of it. The post-apocalyptic scenery can be really beautiful in most parts of the game.

Thank you to those who read this whole review, I know it’s long, but I really wanted to get all of my honest opinion out on this game. I do understand all the negative reviews and why people can’t stomach the story. But if you’re looking to buy the game but are a bit sceptical, I’d say give it a shot. I really think its important to understand the context of the story decisions Naughty Dog has made in TLOU2.

First of all, I have to praise it for the technical aspects of game. The gameplay and the graphics were amazing. Those were fantastic.

BUT... what made the original TLOU a perfect game was the combination of gameplay, graphics, and fantastic storytelling. This game severely lacked the latter.

The poor treatment of Joel was downright insane. I understand that killing off a main character to push the story to a new level may be necessary, but to turn him into an unsuspecting, gullible man in a world that is out to get the person who ruined the Fireflies was a poor choice of narrative. ND and critics are bashing the fans for not accepting the killing of Joel, but what can you possibly expect from us when you made us love and understand a character who’ve experienced a loss of his daughter, who was untrusting of anyone, and battled against a flawed faction to save someone he grew to love and trust? ND made us empathize with him and understand his actions. Now you decide to kill him off in the most unclimactic manner possible?

The introduction to Abby and the long hours of gameplay with her was terrible. The game made us play with an unknown character within the first hour and make her (or him) brutally beat the main character to death. Then later we are forced to play as her for who knows what hours. Seemed like infinity. The game goes onto make us see from Abby’s perspective. What for??

If ND wanted to teach us about the cycle of hate and vengeance, it would’ve been better if ND built up a story where the users could see the initial effects of losing her father and how severely that has impacted throughout life. All we get is a nobody killing off our loved character and forced to understand her perspective.

And do I have to talk about the messed up romance scene? No, I don’t think I will.

The brutality. Oh boy, where do I begin. For a game that wanted to promote understanding and empathy, ND sure did a great job letting us killing enemies in the most brutal form possible. Did we really need to witness a piece of brain sticking onto a golf club? Or a pregnant woman dying?
Some critics are now generalizing the mass of negative reviewers as immature bigots who are (1) Refusing to see past the brutal treatment of Joel and (2) are antagonistic toward the SJW agenda and the trans community. What they do not realize, is that if those biases were true, the Naughty Dog fanbase would have criticized games like the TLOU: Left Behind and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. There are plenty of games that present different sexual orientations and ideals, but you don’t see a mass of people rallying to give poor reviews.

Gamers are just as well rational and understanding as the prominent critics. We are not some close-minded “bigots” who refuse to empathize with progressive thinking. If you are seeing a massive pushback from the general population, maybe it’s worth looking at the problem rather than going against the gamers. Remember Naughty Dog, WE WANTED TO LOVE THE SECOND GAME JUST AS WE DID FOR THE FIRST ONE.

If the general fanbase is the problem, just look at all the prominent game streamers. Were their reception so welcoming?

Game critics are denying the fact that they were paid or given incentives to give glowing reviews on the TLOU 2. However, what they don’t tell you is that they are consciously (or unconsciously) obligated to protect their brand and the relationship with Naughty Dog. Given that the first TLOU received such glowing reviews, they’re put into a position where they cannot give lower scores in fear of being outcasted from other reviewers. All these critics simply played it safe. Imagine a scenario where you were a senior writer in a prominent game review platform and were given the copy of the game a week before the actual release. Naughty Dog, a major game company, asks you to review it (but with major restrictions on discussing about the game) and you know that the first TLOU received glowing reviews from other major critics and has a massive fanbase. Would you really be able to give negative reviews on it? Giving a negative review will (1) Draw major backlash from the fanbase who won’t be able to play for another week and (2) Make their brand look base in a sea of positive reviews from other prominent reviewers. Just look at what happened to the YouTube channel SkillUp. Some fans and critics bashed the poor guy for leaving a bad review.

If you want to play for an upgraded TLOU gameplay and graphics, please go ahead. It’s really an awesome game.

If you want to play for the story, I recommend saving that money and play something else.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I find it just as hypocritical as the game's ending, for people to say: "The user score is made up of people who haven't even played the game". However, have nothing to say about the 95 Metascore of critics who only played the first 12 hours. They haven't really played as Abby, and have not even gotten to review the end. (Also, it is possible for them to have been influenced by Sony or ND).

Anyways, remember, most people are not disappointed of the fact that Joel dies, more so than how he dies and then having to play as that character that kills him, with NO character development whatsoever! Had an expansion come out where we played as Abby, or had the first 12 hours you play as Abby and THEN she kills Joel, maybe (and that's a far stretch). What Joel did was bad, I get that. But are we going to sit here and justify everything Abby does?

Also, for those who are saying that the only reason for someone to dislike this game is because they are NOT open-minded to LGBT+, I invite you to search The Last of Us: Left Behind on Metacritic. Go ahead, and check the user score. This DLC is actually where we find out that Ellie is queer. The grand majority of gamers enjoyed this DLC. No one has a problem with gay main characters. Stop that self-pity excuse to be exonerated from weak characters writing. Every good storyteller know "The Hero's Journey". This game is too pretentious to even acknowledge a hero exists.

I don't need to play a game, to review everything that has been spoiled and revealed. I have played MANY outstanding games that were spoiled for me, and still enjoyed them. Why? Because they followed the most basic sketch to a good story: characters, trials and tribulations, mentors, "the bad-guy", a quest, and a resolution. It is clear for anyone who has read the reviews: Ellie let's Abby go. So she murders dozens upon dozens of people, and then has a realization that murder won't solve anything.

TRUE, but if you are thinking with this logic, then neither will you (the only presumed person alive to be immune to this fungus), walking away in sadness. In this case, and I know this will be controversial, have Ellie come to terms with what she must do, and give herself up, so that she can finish what they started in the first game. It will be a controversial ending, however, it will make chicken salad out of the chicken crap you gave us there at the end.

Feel free to buy and play the game if you desire. But remember this is a $60+ USD game that might not be accepted for refund or trade-in. And a lot of the people telling you to buy the game and play for yourself know this. It's marketing.

Anyways, those are my two cents. Which is about the only thing I would pay for this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really waited 7 years to play as Joel for about 5ish minutes, watch him get cucked, then play as Ellie for around half of the game. Then proceed to try to connect to Abby, a psychopath that the game really wants you to get attached to, and a child with no personality, and all of her **** friends for **** 5-6 hours while I really just want to get back to playing as Ellie, the person I payed to play as. Then get forced to try to kill Ellie while playing as Abby. I mean seriously? This game really wants me to be connected enough to a dry, unlikable character to the point where I am willing to beat the **** out of one of my favorite characters of all time. What a **** joke. The weird part of the game is though, is that there are really stellar, standout moments. The one that immediately comes to mind is Ellie's birthday museum visit, which is so well written that it really feels like something out of The Last Of Us 1. It's like all of the talented writers exclusively worked on the flashback scenes.

It baffles me how a game with such a weak and unsatisfyingly plot and ending can also have really great moments ( and they all pretty much happen exclusively between Joel and Ellie). Maybe it was a bad Idea to kill off Joel right away.

The ending is extremely weak and underwhelming, having the wimpiest fight between a hurt Ellie and a malnourished Abby. After challenging Abby to fight, Ellie stupidly puts her fingers in Abby's mouth, causing Ellie to have 2 fingers to be bitten off. Then she let's Abby go. What was the whole point of going to find Abby then?

What a horrible ending for Ellie's character. She made it clear that she doesn't want to end up alone in TLOU1, and ends up losing Joel, Dina, and Jesse's Baby (Potato was his name I think).
She isn't even able to carry one Joel's memory via the Guitar, as she can't play it due to her missing fingers.
And worst of all, after all of that she just **** let's Abby live,

What's the moral of this story? Murdering hundreds of people is a-okay except for if you're seeking revenge? I don't **** know.

Extremely disappointing to see large media outlets blame these low user ratings on people being "Trans-phobic, Homophobic, or Sexist" to distract the facts that this game is nowhere near the quality of the first game.

    A damn **** shame.

To think I used to look to to Neil Druckmann.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, I bought the game despite all the leaks, despite how bad it looked. I wanted to love this game, and I wanted it to be even better then the original. There are plenty of people who are upset about Ellie being LGBT+ and other stupid complaints, but I'm not here to complain about that. I open the game expecting to be in love with the characters and story, just like the original, but not only did I not even get out of the first cutscene without the game glitching out and soft locking, the combat tutorials were just plain bad, with the introduction of dodging and the combat nerf being annoying mechanics for both me, who played the original recently enough to be familiar with the gameplay, but for my brother who hasn't played it in years. The dodge mechanic just flat out sucks, it doesn't work often, makes combat extremely repetitive, and with the combat speed of all the zombies in the game, you can never not use it for melee fights. The writing is something I'd expect from a 12 year old girl who just got off a binge of those awful Netflix movies, the 365 Days type, where the writing is bad, but it's "mature" enough to make them feel older then they are. The game opens with about 20 minutes of teen drama and sex, something straight out of high school movies, and then the first part closes out with Joel being killed by some girl that is just flat out annoying, in a way that makes no sense for his character, and very early. It makes the plot feel rushed and it genuinely ruins the game from the start. The game doesn't get better from here. This honestly plays out like a bad fan fiction, and the worst part is I know NaughtyDog won't address it, remake it, or make a better third game to fix this dumpster fire of a sequel. So now what I and many others consider one of the best games in video game history, it essentially ruins the original game and the entire franchise as it is now. I'm honestly disappointed in the studio for this massive oversight on garbage writing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Was a big fan of the first game, and was highly anticipating this one. The visuals and soundtrack are top notch, Gustavo never disappoints. The rest of the game, however, does.

Pretty trees and music can only do so much when games are about storytelling and gameplay. The combat is engaging and entertaining. It's very similar to the first game, and it got a little bit tedious at times; not to mention some of the NPCs have rather clunky AI. Overall, i thought it was solid, and i liked being able to have more options. I only wish they included new combat styles, and the dodge felt a bit bad. The story is what really brought this game down in my opinion, though.

The things I dislike the most about the direction the story went was the fact that so many characters felt, well, out of character. There were some parts i really enjoyed; the flashbacks, and Ellie's quips with Dina. However, Ellie, and Tommy (later on) seemed like an entirely different person with some decisions they made. The way this game treated certain minorities hurts rather than help. it felt they were so focused on including representation that they did it horribly. Joel's death feels unreal, and I know it was meant to feel real and harsh, but it made it impossible for me to like Abby in any way. I think it would feel better if Joel went out protecting Ellie from Abby even. The sex scene was absolutely unneeded, honestly.

The ending felt worthless, everything Ellie did to get to that point and she changes her mind? It felt like everything done in the game was for nothing. Even having the option to kill Abby or spare her would make it infinitely more satisfying for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has THE most beautiful visuals and audio that I ever experienced, but one of the most disappointing plot drags it all down.

Graphics, design, acting and sound are amazing. ND has the best art team. But I was never into gaming for graphics - it's like 20% of the experience for me, maybe even less. Graphics can't really add much score to the game (for me). It's a multiplyer. It could make a good game great, but it doesn't do much to elevate a bad game, which is the case with TLOU2.

The atmosphere and plot is Bleak and Hopeless. Everything is going from good to bad to worse, and you are forced to watch this trainwreck. Not only that, you are forced to actively participate in it. I cannot count the number of times when the character is about to do something utterly stupid or just disgusting and abhorrently evil, and I simply find myself not wanting to progress. I want to turn away and walk in the other direction, but I can't.
It wouldn't be as bad, but the game then actively moralizes with YOU, and scolds YOU as a player for making those decisions and actions that you didn't make. The writer made those decisions for you, and then he punishes you for playing the game that he made.
And every damn character, including Allie is like that. Every last one of them is unlikeable. Except Joel, that is DEAD and that we meet in flashbacks that is the only positive thing of the game. But if you're ever allowed to witness that positivity and feel good - that only means that the game is preparing to dip you head first in a bucket of **** because as soon as you'll return to reality, all that positivity will be crushed by something terrible. It's to the point that I found myself completely emptionally detached and simply not caring about anything that happens. I had an urge to skip cutscenes in this game.
I'm forced to watch my favorite character deconstructing herself for 15 hours (let's not count the Abby part where I just want to get over with as fast as possible because I want this **** dead).

Then there's a problem of the second character. Basically what they do with Abby is they first make us hate her, and then they force us to PLAY AS HER and show us that she's not as bad. Problem is, first impression is already made, and it's THE WORST. No matter what you do after that, I just can't get over the bitterness of knowing what this **** did, and I can't warm up to her.
Having a totally unlikeable personality and, let me be blunt here, ugly testosterone-filled looks doesn't help.

And then it ends with.... nothing.
We've killed so many, we've lost so much, Allie crossed all the bridges... And then we spare the only person who ACTUALLY deserved to die? We just let her go... for what? Why? Why should Abby get to live? The only way they could possibly make it ANY worse was for Ellie to spare her and for that to get drowned by Abby immediately. That'd be nice. And that'd fit in with the story.

There's zero positive things to this game other than visuals.
Gameplay is mediocre - it's not improved from the first part and feels outdated. It's even worse, somehow.

Now look. I think that some people will enjoy that story. Truly. For them - this will be a 10/10 experience. But I think the majority of the fans will NOT.

Here's the thing. I do think that some movies and games should go in that direction. To be dark, bleak, violent, outright depressing - all of which TLOU2 is.
But I feel that if you're making a SEQUEL - you can not just change the tone so much. Imagine watching Raven first, which is a bleak, somewhat depressing movie, but it has hope and satisfying finale. Then you go into sequel, and all that happens is those ****ty things but without any Raven to punish the villains. You're just watching them torture and kill people for 2 hours.
That's the tonal change of TLOU2. Everything is BAD, and will get worse.
I think when you make a SEQUEL, you have a bit of a responsibility to your fans to make it "more of the same", to make it satisfying to people who loved the original.
If it was a standalone, I would just say it isn't for me. As a Sequel to my favorite game - I can't just let it go.

The story is 0/10 for me.
The press that all gave it 10/10? Most of them are SHILLS. Maybe they don't get outright PAID, but they rate it high so that they keep receiving early copies. Because if they rate it low - next time ND and Sony wouldn't send it. They are INCENTIVISED to rate high.

Aside from graphics, there's nothing to give 10/10 for. Outdated gameplay and unpleasant unfulfilling story that should leave most of the fans extremely upset, and most of normal people at least partially distressed thanks to all the violence and so on.

The result is +2 for graphics + 6 for gameplay - 5 for story. Yes, actually negative score for story. If there was no story and just beautiful levels - the game would have been BETTER.
    Result: 3/10 game for me.
Literally do not recommend this to people like me.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
