Not interesting game. I have been waiting this game for so long, but gameplay is really boring, script of this game is really bad. The only think I liked in this game were graphics. Shadows are really beautiful, but graphics are not as important as plot and gameplay, so I’m really disappointed in this game, not recommended to buy.

Big disappointment. This game seems uninterested in discovering what made the first game great. Instead it's all about social justice and leftist politics. Regardless of your personal politics, you would think a game about zombies wouldn't have politics at it's core, but it does.

The game is also filled with hand-holding and a general sense of disregard and disrespect for the player.

Probably not, so we'll show you instead of letting you find out for yourself. You feel like an idiot playing this.

Graphics are nice, of course, and the sound works, that's why it gets a 1. I hope Naughty Dog sees this for what it is, a big miscalculation, and that they do better next time.

This is the first game I've ever felt the need to "review" for anybody. But I must warn people who loved the story of the first game. The sequel is absolutely garbage with story. Not much to say beyond that. It's clearly an attempt to shove unpopular political message.

And this was not a case of review bombing. It's a case of people reacting to insulting bad storytelling. Review Bombing

I decided that it would be better for me to write a review after completing the game entirely and here I am around 25 hours of gameplay. If I had to sum this game up in three words they would be "A massive disappointment". Let me get something straight, there is nothing wrong with having LGBT characters in a game. If I had to sum this game up in three words they would be "A massive disappointment". Let me get something straight, there is nothing wrong with having LGBT characters in a game. In fact we found out of Ellie's sexuality in the DLC for "The Last of Us" that she was gay, which is fine. The first game is my absolute favorite game ever and it breaks my heart seeing that they took this route with the second game. They absolutely destroyed everything they built up in the first game within the first 2 hours of this game. The story is absolutely horrendous it was based on hate and the desire for revenge. After the first 5 hours of gameplay I honestly just did not want to play the game anymore. I had to force myself to play this and it pains me because of my excitement for this game to come out, just to see Niel just burn everything from the first game down to the floor. The reason I am not giving this game a 0 is because of the graphics and game-play. The graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is ok. I absolutly hated that Naughty Dog forced me to play half of the game as the character that murdered one of my favorite characters in cold blood. The issue here is what made the first game so amazing was the story, that was the important part of both games. The Last of Us has always been about the story. The ending was horrible as well and Neil already said that there are no plans to release a DLC with this game which I see them as saying "there are no plans to fix the story". Like I said earlier in this review, I have nothing against them adding LGBT characters in the game but I really felt like Naughty Dog was trying to shove them down my throat, like if they were trying to push an agenda through this video game, it made me feel like it was less of a video game and more of a political statement which is another reason I think is why most of us gamers dislike the game. Honestly I think this game was a waste of money and a waste of my time. I just really hope that if they do make a third game or a TV show/movie they don't use Abbey as the protagonist, she is the most hated character in the game... that will definitely be the final nail in the coffin for us fanatics of the franchise. The game's story line is as weak as it is unoriginal, the characters are predictable and underdeveloped, the fact that the studio has revenge as the motive for both playable characters is pathetic at best. In my opinion the only way to save this franchise is a prequel game that covers the lives of Joel and Tommy, one that explains their falling out, and even then I would be shocked if Naughty Dog doesn't screw the pooch. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If people didn’t get to play the first game, then this game’s story wouldn’t feel too horrible since you won’t have a reference point or any emotional connection to the lead characters. It’s such a tremendous let-down because the first game set such a high bar story-telling wise.

The first game conveniently used McCarthy’s The Road as an “inspiration”, this game’s original story ends up ironically exposing how inadequate Neil Druckmann actually is as a story-teller.

There are plenty of argument out there already discussing why the story is bad so I won’t dive into details but let me point to the obvious one here - how do you expect the audience to care about the characters in the 2nd half when you already *spoiler* all of them in the first?

To be perfectly clear, I’ve got nothing against *spoiler* getting killed. The critical flaw lies in the story’s structure itself - when you can’t connect to the characters and the audience stopped caring, the 2nd half of the game felt so long and patronizing. Every single plot point felt so contrived and worked too hard seemingly trying to “influence” the choices you have no power to make in the first place.

An easy fix would be giving this game multiple endings based on the moral choices you had to make, which shouldn’t be too hard, I’ll be happy to take just two endings - to kill or not to kill.

On supporting characters - I don't necessarily agree you can just dismiss them. We see plenty of examples how supporting characters can truly shine and be memorable. Even in the first game - beyond Joel and Ellie’s bonding dynamic - the supporting encounters put flesh on the bone making the whole story and the world so much richer and more dimensional. If the second game is about diversity and inclusion (which I’m rooting for) Neil’s paper-thin characters really became piss-takes. Major major failure here (again, due to that stupid structure)

On Ellie/Abby’s arc - this is exactly why I felt this game is so patronizing. *Spoiler* gets killed 30 mins into the game and you already know this is revenge story, there’s no more explanation needed for what the writer is trying to say here. Secondly if the cathartic release is about turning Abby into a likable character - it’ll have to take more than a full game to do that. She *spoiler* the lead character for FS! It took us 40 hours in the whole first game to love Joel/Ellie in the first place.

Another case in point for Game of Thrones fans here - after the Red Wedding, how long did it take us to like Jamie Lannister? The whole entire f*&king show. And it’ll be much harder to tell Neil Druckmann’s 2nd part without the support of secondary characters, again. Hence it’s so arrogant for Neil Druckmann to assume players will buy into his BS and have a satisfying ending.

End of the day, a good ending is NOT decided by who gets killed who gets to live, it is whether or not it is SATISFYING. I’d even go further to say that it is the storytellers RESPONSIBILITY to make it satisfying. At the end of Breaking Bad, Walter White dies - but it still is the one of the most satisfying and celebrated ending of all time. Now that’s a good story.

I really hope that they replace Neil Druckmann with a fresh better writer to do the next game, otherwise there’s no way I’m buying his crap again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game follows the idea of revenge. The graphics are brilliant, but that's about where it ends. The story tries to make us sympathise with a new character, Abby, whose dad was killed in the crossfire at the end of the brilliant game that the first one was. She gets saved by Joel, but ends up torturing him and kills him in front of Ellie, who now embarks on a mission. I felt that the new characters were weak, but Jesse became quite likeable, but Ellie's girlfriend seems unnecessary, being pregnant and being hauled along. Character development was bad, Abby's story was not good enough and a huge disappointment of a game, especially because of the hype, a brilliant first game and waiting around for 7 years. 1/10. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was also one of the players who thoroughly enjoyed the first game. After waiting 6 years for the sequel, I cannot emphasise how disappointed I was. Killing Joel was a huge disrespect to his character and does not make any logical sense. In the first game, he could sense an ambush from a mile away and in this game, he must have become retarded as he follows a group of strangers and identifies himself. The characters are what made me fall in love with the first game personally and to see Joel die in such an unsatisfying way kills me. Apart from Joel, Ellie does not grow in any meaningful way in the second game either. She is just mindlessly driven for blood and in the end, she kills

    everyone

except the one person who was soley responsible for Joel's death. (Abby). In addition to that, the game does not offer the experience of progression and the stories between the two characters are so haphazardly arranged, going back and forth that there is no sense of going forward and progressing. I do not mind if the characters are lesbian or transgender but to have a random character appear out of nowhere and kill one of the most beloved characters...

The positive reviews are people that had no sense of attachment to the original title. This whole game is just a message that revenge is bad. The graphics, the mechanics and audio are all beyond fantastic but it's a story game and Naughty Dog **** up on the story. Save your money do not buy this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been playing games for over 30 years and never have I been more disgusted with a game that I anticipated so much. This is a story driven game so the defense that the visuals, sounds, and gameplay are great fall short. Tlou1 was a triumph of amazing storytelling that was thought provocative and intense. Many people have stated that this game revolved around the concept of revenge, and a part of it did. However, the more important aspect was about justice. Ellie and Tommy sought justice on Abby after Joel and Tommy saved Abby from a horde after which she promptly tortures and murders Joel. Let that sink in. She tortured...and murdered...Joel. Yes, Joel killed her father. A clean kill without malevolence. A clean kill in an act of self defense for himself and the surrogate daughter that was never given the option of consent to sacrifice her own life for a cure. Joel's death was very early in the game and was so brutal it was an insta-hate moment for Abby. I was fine with all this. It was still good story building at this point. Good story building that was ruined with the onset of having to play Abby. This not only killed the story, but also made the game way to long. When I realized that I had to play through the same timeline with Abby that I did with Ellie, I was immediately disgusted. I did not care about her or her little band of hate-able misfits. I wanted to see justice for the brutal act placed upon Joel. I did not want to see a redemption arc, because I felt that redemption was impossible and not necessary to the story. It did not take me long to say screw it, put the difficulty to its easiest setting and begin plowing my way through to get the justice I so eagerly sought. I refused to upgrade a single aspect of Abby and was in my glory when I realized I could skip all of Abby's cuts-scenes too, which I did. I had no investment in this poorly developed character and her poorly developed friends. My only satisfaction at this point was that I was slowing killing off Abby's band. In fact a high point was Tommy shooting Manny in the head, because he was the one that spit on Joel's body. My march to justice moved forward until the confrontation scene at the theatre. This is where the festering disgust swelled into pure hatred of the game. Not only was I forced to confront Ellie as Abby, but Abby won the fight. I was robbed of my justice. This torturing, murderous monster was allowed to live. This made the following farmhouse scene (which you are thinking is the end game) tedious. When Ellie realizes she needs closure to heal and move on and therefore goes back onto the hunt for Abby, I allow my resentment to abate. It was here that the story got even worse. When I found Abby on the cross, there were so many options the developer could have given us but did not. I wanted to shoot her, or at the very least leave her there. Instead, I was forced to cut her down and then instigate a fight with her. A fight that I was robbed a second time of the justice I so craved as Ellie lets Abby live. This was utter rubbish and I had to double check to make sure this crappy story was not written my M. Night Shyamalan. This game destroyed everything that made the first one great. I am very confident that I will never purchase another Naughty Dog or Neil Druckman work. I was looking forward to this game so much and it ended up being the most disappointing gaming experience of my life. Sharing these feelings have given me a better perspective. I am changing my score from a 2 to a 1. Expand

While playing I felt bad all the time. That is not why I play games.

Why had Joel to be killed in such a cruel way? Remember: A single father who lost his daughter and did everything he could to save Ellie. Again: What is ND trying to tell me by executing the respected main character in such a sickening way?

    Bottom line: you lost me.

It is gut wrenching to write but the story is a mess! I am a such a fan of TLOU 1 but Neil Druckmann rolled the dice and forced his views onto this game instead of looking at what would be a good for the characters & everyone playing.

Something better written such as Dina dying or Joel being kidnapped for torture and evidently getting bit in escape, would of been beautiful irony as Joel

Something better written such as Dina dying or Joel being kidnapped for torture and evidently getting bit in escape, would of been beautiful irony as Joel is the reason for no cure?

Two opposite perceptions were a mistake as there are always good people on both sides of war. This has overall disregarded how it would impact the fans of TLOU 1, by building a sequel that is fit for the critics & those less invested in the existing characters. I think they should retell the story again, as I wonder how many people would choose a different fate for Joel & Abby if given the option to the player. Where there no red flags to avoid this line of story and provide a game that everyone would enjoy! Especially as Neil Druckmann cited “The game will be diverse and not for everyone”?

The story should have reflected what was shown & perceived in the trailer, this would of made a more fulfilling & wholesome game for all, instead of this being tainted with a 50/50 split due to the objectives to please a completely different crowd. Ellie would have been the key to seeing both sides of the story

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bold doesn't always mean a masterpiece of a game. The only thing The Last of Us Part 2 has going for it is the beautiful visuals and the decent game play. However, between the poor pacing of the story and the vanilla revenge story told through gaming's most controversial video game character of 2020, it fails to live up to anything else. The narrative was written poorly with the constant flashbacks and disappointingly, the main feature from the first game which was the bond of characters and the overarching story is completely chucked out of the window. Overall, Naughty Dog has produced something which seems to be taken straight out of a fan fiction and given life to it. They need to reevaluate where they go from here and hope that they can come back from this disaster of a game. Expand

Terrible story that relies on cheap shock value, messy pacing, uninteresting new characters, treats the characters in the first game like garbage, and an insultingly unsatisfactory ending. We were lied to, we thought Ellie was the protagonist but she wasn't, that Joel is part of the game but he wasn't. Even with these aside, the story is pretty messed up, a dangerous and dark thing as revenge was not portrayed as accurately as one could think. I only enjoyed the graphics, and the parts of the gameplay where I was playing with Ellie until it got repetitive and boring.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I created an account just to review this game. That's how strongly I about it.

Loved the first game. It was one of the all-time best. It was made great by the incredibly well crafted story with compelling character arcs. This sequel had none of that; NONE OF THAT. All of these reviewers writing about a great touchy-feely story with moral lessons must be children. In my opinion, it all came across as Hollywood readymade fluff made up of tired topes. I know that some people will summarily dismiss this review by calling me a trans/homophobe without countering any of the points I make. Ignore those people and really think about what I'm writing before you spend your hard earned money on this game.

It was all sacrificed to push an LGBTQ agenda. Not a problem in itself, but it was done in a way that did nothing for the story. It would have taken five minutes to set the sexual orientation of the characters and then move on to writing a great story and characters. Instead, they completely destroyed the bleak and raw atmosphere of the first game. It also took away valuable time to create meaningful, and most of all, CONVINCING character arcs. You have to suspend a lot of disbelief in this version of a post apocalyptic world. It created a story that was disjointed at best. It made cut scenes feel excruciatingly long because of the framing of lesbian love and trans story lines injected into them with no real purpose to the story line or audience. I am not saying this because I am against those social norms. I would feel the same way if the game was trying to convince me to accept vegans, or omnivores for that matter. It would deter from the the experience of the game. Unless of course that was the intended purpose of the game...

There are loooong video sequences with many wasted minutes dedicated solely to: a lesbian kiss at a party between two of the main characters, cueing up the overused stereotype of the redneck that stirs up trouble because of it, a conversation between Joel and Ellie about the incident, a love scene between the two females in a basement pot garden, and then the happy couple living on a farm in the country raising an infant. Then there's all of the other small moments of dialogue incidental to this narrative. I don't want to buy a game to get prosthelytized to ad-nauseum.
You could easily cut hours of video and live sequences from the game with no sacrifice to the narrative.

And then there's the rest of the cutscenes. There are a lot. If I wanted to watch a movie, that's what I would do; not play a game. There are long sections of play where you're just running through a dream sequence or reliving a memory. I guess some people might call this gameplay because you have to open a door or crouch through some meaningless action. It felt like they did this as an afterthought to give you "something" to do as a player. The farmhouse sequence is one of the worst. You get to walk around as part of the happy couple carrying a baby while herding goats into a barn. Yes, really, herding goats. I found this to be a total waste of time. I found myself wishing I could skip many sections of the game and just "get on with it."

Finally, they rewrote Joel into a faint shadow of what you experience in the first game. This is a fatal flaw. He was easily one of the best characters ever to grace the world of fiction. He is why the first game was such a success. Instead of vigilant, shrewd ,and wise; he's unaware, weak, and dumb. Then, he gets killed before the game really even gets started. He gets killed and replaced by protagonists that aren't written anywhere close to level that Joel was.

Way to go developers. You just killed one of the best games ever. Even the wooden sky bridges running through Seattle fifty-stories high made the game feel like a fantasy adventure instead of the dark world of the first game. Horrible, horrible, horrible.

Oh yeah, let's not forget the original had one of the best endings in video game history. This sequel gets the title for "worst ending".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Shame. Just shame. I had high hopes for this game, and they ruined it.
The game is hollow, does not have any message or even a conclusion. It is not The Last of Us, it is just misery porn with nothing ever good happening, no chance of Ellie to shine throughout the story that was supposed to be about her but became about a ruthless psycho woman who killed one of the main characters right off the bat. They played with the personalities of both Joel and Ellie for the sake of the plot and it was incredibly forced.
Joel would not trust a stranger. Neither would Tommy. Ellie would not forget that map at her enemy's base.

The game tries to manipulate the player into liking Abby, but it fails miserably. Ellie kills dogs, Abby pets them. The people Ellie kills scream and beg, Abby saves two children. However, Ellie feels bad ever time she kills someone whereas Abby gets happy about killing a pregnant girl. She has sex with her friend's boyfriend. She never shows any remorse for her actions, and does not learn anything by the end of the game. So, no character development at all. She is just there for the idea of a "strong woman character" but get this straight; having big muscles does not make you strong. Showing compassion does.
So, who thought having players play as Abby for 10+ hours is a good idea? The thing I hated the most was when I had to fight against Ellie as Abby. It is not even plausible that she could win that fight with no weapons whatsoever.
Overall, the game has completely shattered the old characters' personalities, lives, and hopes. We got the worst ending possible with Ellie having lost everything. They also lied to the players in trailers and by not giving any info about playing as Abby. They knew we were here for Joel and Ellie so they kept it. The whole plot is filled with major plot holes and cheap emotional manipulation. On top of that, you have to play 10+ hours with a character you hate just to see this messed up ending.
No, thanks. Naughty dog has just lost a fan, and Neil Druckmann will be remembered as one of the worst writers for years to come.
The only reason I'm not rating it 0/10 is because of the hard work the design team has put into their work.

    ---------------------------
Why did I give this such a low rating? Easy - Neil Druckmann and
Halley Gross fundamentally missed the mark on understanding what made The Last of Us special: Joel and Ellie. Their journey/bond together was the game - that was why I was waiting to see the continuation of their story after the cliffhanger in the previous installment. How did they cope with what happened? How will this change their bond?

Unfortunately, this game spits at the legacy of both characters by sidestepping an actual narrative; instead, Druckmann and Gross focused on hollow, nihilism as a substitute for actual emotional depth.

Ellie and joel don't feel the same - their personalities fundamentally seem off outside of brief moments within the story. While I liked Dena and Jesse, I couldn't get over that ellie, joel, and tommy were out of character almost the entirety of the game.

Moreover, the game attempts to force sympathy on characters who aren't capable of sympathy themselves. Manipulative tactics as well as the forced narrative in story telling made the game wholly unsatisfying to play compared to the first.

This game changes characters and situations from the previous game to drive this story - that was Gross and Druckmann's biggest error. I feel as though the game's story was designed to intentionally challenge my love of the previous game which is why this review probably deserves 0/10 stars. I don't know if I will ever connect with the first game and dlc again, knowing that this is where the story leads.

What happened to the hopefulness? What happened to Ellie being special? I believe this game did immeasurable damage to the franchise. I won't support any future Last of Us projects - which absolutely breaks my heart.

I don't believe this is a bad game. A bad game implies it wasn't worth playing based on the merit of the artists and designers. I believe this game was intentionally divisive which makes it not worth playing for fans who loved the first game. Ellie was so special and strong - but the devs decided that in this new world you play in, other people in this game are even more special and stronger and more justified in nonsensical actions they take.

Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, your "boldness" ruined one of the greatest franchises in history. I can see that Bruce Straley was crucial to the success of the game, the Last of Us franchise, and Naughty Dog's future. Good luck with the future Naughty Dog - I'm out.

Assuming the “shock” doesn’t turn you off in the first couple hours, the first 12-15 hours of the game are rather enjoyable. Great scenery. Fun gameplay, albeit repetitive and straightforward. The second 12-15 hours... unbearable. Has completely turned me off from anything from anyone involved going forward. Too many lies and blatant falsehoods.

I look forward to this game at the first teaser, one of great game I patiently waited. Like the first game, part 2 has best gameplay and the graphic is really astounding. However it all means **** when you are force to like something you hate. I feel humiliated. I burned the dics not even interested in the ending. Wish I could get my money back.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
