Could have been the best game of all time, but it suffered from a bad narrative.

A sequel that feels completely unnecessary and does not justify its own existence, nor does it even give a proper payoff once you finish just a feeling of emptiness wondering why you even played, what was the point of it all. All while destroying the franchise for the sake of “storytelling”.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Flashbacks insult the viewers intelligence, while also not establishing emotional sympathy. Like I would have cared more had Joel's death not come in the first 2 hours of the game, then the game is spent using him in flashbacks. What's the point of killing him if he shows up every 2 chapters?

Why do I care about any of these flashbacks if he's already dead? Flashbacks are used when you think a viewer can't recall information or you're telling something **outside of the larger narrative.** When all of the flashbacks happen within the time-line of The Last of Us-The Last of Us II. It doesn't make sense to tell them as flashbacks, if even they are vignettes of the characters life during "peace time" it doesn't make sense to constantly jump to them in the middle of a war.

I don't care about "ye olde good days" if they have no real barring on the current situation besides being a late exposition/lore dump, that again could have been told within the cannon narrative timeline.

Why make me sympathetic to a character after they kill off the main cast, if you're gonna spend half the story on them? It makes the viewer resent the character and makes it harder to care for their plight and establish a connection.

The gameplay inherits the usual level of naughty dogs, but the gameplay is not as rich and rich as the level. The battle and narrative rhythm are chaotic. Poor narrative techniques and irrational stories make the performance of the whole game worse.

The story and characters are an insult to not only the players but also the first game in the series. The game is VERY short (a couple hours) and has almost no real gameplay. The entire couple hour journey is just walking from one cutscene to the next doing your best to disregard the ugliest characters you've ever seen.

Avoid at all costs. I'm only giving this a 1/10 because

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful Visuals, upgraded gameplay, new environments, enemies and mechanics.... and I still absolutely hated this game. It would not be hyperbole for me to say The last of us is my absolute favorite thing across any medium. Whether it's movie's books or other video games, The last of us stands above all for me.. so after 7 years of waiting, to be presented with this story I am absolutely disgusted. Naughty Dog and Neil Druckman have absolutely failed this fan base and more importantly they failed Ellie. The sad attempt to humanize the character who brutally murders Joel was completely deplorable. Never have I spent so much time saying out loud during a game "I Don't Care!" as when I was forced to spend nearly half this game playing as Joels killer. News Flash Naughty Dog, nobody gives a damn about Abby. I literally made her die multiple times just because I hated her character so much. How you can possibly justify dedicating hours and hours of gameplay on her is nothing short of lunacy. Not to mention the list of supporting characters that get almost no development during that horrendous chunk of the gameplay. I got to a point where I did not want to play this game. It was so pathetically bad that I called Gamestop to try and return my Collectors edition. I thought to myself, "I'm willing to forgive all this garbage if only to see Ellie get her revenge". But no Naughty Dog... you screwed that up too. I have played the original Last of us 15 times through and can say without question that Ellie would not have let Abby just walk away. She deserved justice, she deserved better. Then at the end you just couldn't resist dicking her over a little more. Should we have Dina waiting to console her... Nahhh. Maybe tommy?... nahhh maybe we should let her keep her fingers so she can have a way to remember Joel by playing the Guitar... nahhh. The absolute failure of this game is reminiscent of The Last Jedi. You set yourselves up with the game of the decade. A game universally praised by critics and Fans alike. Yet you completely disembarked from all the things that made the first game such a masterpiece. Not to mention how you straight up Lied to everyone with your BS trailers depicting Joel in Seattle with Ellie. I don't know how this game could possibly get a score above like a 3 but these critics seem to be more interested in riding Naughty Dogs dick than calling them out. I can only give this game.a score higher than zero because of the relationship built between Dina and Ellie. A relationship and dichotomy you throw out the window halfway through the game and then completely torch at the end. Congratulations. You ruined my favorite Story. You have made the original Last of us virtually unplayable. I would've rather you never made a sequel than watch you disrespect and ruin the legacy of Ellie and Joel. I sincerely hope you're company will listen to the fans and address your failure. But I somehow doubt it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The hard truth is, ND is not progressive, they use the suffering of minorities to create further divide for marketing. Obviously the story was bad, the gameplay was bland and unoriginal, and the graphics were great, but you’ll find this in many other reviews. For me, I was also very disappointed in this game that was being announced as “overly progressive”. Black representation was poor (every black character was a villain/opponent that got brutally murdered by white woman, and they had zero redeeming qualities, it honestly looked racist), asian characters were an obstacle to the white characters that resulted in problems arising, or completely tossed away with zero care like Jessie who dies and is never brought up again (not to mention Ellie previously cracking a joke that she’s not interested in him because he’s asian), the back story to the trans character Lev was that he changed his gender from female to male because he was opposed to marrying a cult elder, not because he was uncomfortable with his body. And the lesbian relationship between Ellie and Dina felt like a bad, early 2000’s TV drama where neither of them could be happy. Naughty Dog has a poor history of racial issues in games. With a team led by a majority of straight, white cis-males, them cashing in on causing divide with progressive issues they don’t understand is disgusting. When the leaks happened, and everyone was making disgusting remarks about the trans community because they thought Abby was transgender (as ND randomly decided to make her masculine, and had announced a trans character but didn’t name who), both Neil Druckmann and ND refused to shut down the hate by telling people they were wrong, and instead waited until after the game released for a “Gotcha bigots, you were wrong the whole time!” moment, thanks Neil, the LGBT community appreciates you putting your “art” over the suffering of minorities. If people are under the impression Abby is trans, and she killed the previous games protagonist, people were going to hate on her for any reason they could find. I’m currently under the impression now that those leaks were from ND themselves and it was all just a marketing stint, clearly hasn’t effected the sales. A progressive company doesn’t throw away a lead female writer two years into a project. A progressive company doesn’t cover up sexual assault/harassment from their employees and throw NDA’s around monthly. A progressive company doesn’t treat their workers like crap resulting in layoffs and people leaving on a weekly basis. A progressive company doesn’t cast a white woman as a black woman (Laura Bailey in UC4) without telling the actress, resulting in her getting the negative response for taking the role. And most assurable, a progressive company doesn’t make a game like TLOU 2 that insults the very people it’s meant to be “pandering” to. But don’t get me wrong, ND is neither progressive nor conservative, they’re just terrible people cashing in on our outrage, thanks to the assumption this is the only game with LGBT characters. If you want a game with good LGBT representation (many exist), I recommend Life is Strange and Celeste, much better games with much better stories. And lastly, the LGBT community, people of different races, and all minorities just want one thing, acceptance. The Last of Us Part 2 doesn’t offer that, it just shows you how white straight men view us, as disposable pawns. 1/10, gets a single point for graphics, (although the lighting in dark areas could have been improved, characters lit up like glow sticks). Any story line would be a better one. I don’t know what writer thought. Neil, for his own purpose, has destroyed what Bruce and the others created before. He should quit and banned as a writer for games because he is a poison for this area. And he should stop using a lot of things as his shield. Strongly not recommended. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay is largely the same as the first game save for some additional actions available to the player and improved fluidity of melee combat. Visuals and audio are top quality for its time, similar to how the graphics and sound were also cutting edge during the time of the first game. Characters, character development, and especially the plot, however, are severely lacking.

The story, plot and character development are a huge step below that of its predecessor. Many characters are bland and uninteresting, serving only to die and perform a cheap way of evoking regret from the player but done so poorly that the player would not even have the time or context to think critically about why or how one would feel sorry for their death apart from them being a human being. (player is already aware of the dog-eat-dog world that is present - why is one more death any different?)

Most of the characters have no personality traits and know only how to make snarky comments about whatever was last said by the character conversing with them. Many of the characters also make uncharacteristic or irrational decisions which then result in major repercussions. It's to the point where it feels that the writers forced characters to make decisions that are not in line with the character just to push the story forward and in the direction the writers wanted them to, whether or not it would make any logical sense in the story's context.

Characters that played a major and irreplaceable role in the first game are suddenly made heavily irrelevant and the player is forced by the narrative to hate them and tries extremely hard to paint clear picture of black and white. The game tries to disguise this but it is quite obvious. As Ellie, you are forced to kill enemies who scream in agony or call out to their deceased comrades or even have to kill animals (which have been proven to always evoke strong emotional responses from people). As the other protagonist, Abby, you mostly fight nameless, stereotypical thugs or a dehumanized group of cultists that make no emotional impact on the player when killed (unlike the WLF enemies Ellie must take on). The story tries so hard to make the player empathise with Abby but her personality and decisions in the game don't allow this. She shows no hesitancy in killing Joel despite having her life saved by him and not even any remorse after brutalising him. She shows no hesitancy and even elation in murdering Dina even after knowing she would be killing her unborn child with her. And after all is said and done, despite the game's theme of revenge, she is let free by Ellie despite her actions throughout the game. Of all the characters, Abby, the only person who succeeded in getting their revenge, was let free while Ellie keeps her life but loses her soul and loses everything despite being the one character that chose the higher path. The story tries so hard to portray this idea that "When seeking revenge, dig two graves" but only one grave is filled and thats of the person who chose the path of redemption instead of revenge.

All in all the story, is forced, undeveloped or arranged in such a way that the player would have to perform an insane amount of mental gymnastics to come to any meaningful conclusion of the message the writers tried to send to the audience (if that was even their intention), the new characters are uninteresting while the old ones have been greatly reduced in terms of what made their characters unique and impactful in the first game and the underlying themes of the game are forcibly pushed onto and unnecessarily overwhelming to the player.

Considering all aspects: gameplay, visual/sound design, characters and the plot, this game was a huge step down from its predecessor due to the fact that what made the original game unique and enjoyable was its unique narrative and characters that had a strong but reasonable roles in the development of the story. These, however, are all lost in this instalment. Moral ambiguity no longer exists as Ellie and Joel's decisions are retconned from the original game and boiled down to "Joel stop cure, denied Ellie's choice at sacrifice (although in the original game Ellie isn't even given the choice, she is kept sedated by the scientists without telling her the risks of their procedure and attempt actively to prevent Joel from saving her) and killed Fireflies = evil and deserved his death" and "Ellie left behind her life to pursue Abby and therefore deserved to lose her soul (being able to play the guitar, Dina and their child, Jesse). Abby is constantly painted in a good light and even given almost half of the game to make the player empathise with her despite not even being advertised as a protagonist of the game.

    Final Rating:
1/10 great visuals/sound, ok gameplay but, garbage story and new characters, ND/Sony false advertisement of the game, disrespect for the characters which made TLoU great, endless agenda pandering

This game just give you a middle finger for whatever you have experienced in first part and just killed the characters that you were got so much involved and start liking in the first part. The worst thing is that you have to play the murderer for the sake of story. I hated the direction that it is going and thought of stopping myself from playing further in middle of story as I lost my all hope for continuation. The end is not satisfying and leads you to think about whether all efforts that have been put till now are worth it? Expand

The game turns Joel into a villain and Ellie into a really unlikable character. It feels like the only character they tried to make interesting and likable is Abby and I absolutely hated her with all of my being. The game really shoves this character down your throat after she brutally murders Joel. They also dumb the characters down for the sake of the story which doesn’t make much sense. And these are just the problems with the story I haven’t even spoken about the pacing. I could go on for days about how much I truly dislike this game. The only silver lining is the fun gameplay which is largely unchanged from the first game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's be honest, the game obviously deserves more than 1/10, but it's definitely not a 10/10 either.

The only reason I'm rating 1 is because of how blatantly biased the critic reviews are. I mean scores of 100? Really? You're saying the game cannot be improved AT ALL? In any regard? Wow. Just reminds us once again that you can't trust critics to have your best interests in mind when it comes to spending your money on video games. (Shout-out to the 5 critics that had the balls to give an honest review)

    Pros:
    - Animations (loved the modification/upgrading of weapons, death animations, etc.)
    - Sound design
    - Graphics
    -Environment / atmosphere

Could be seen as either pro or con:
    - Story / sequencing
    - Characters / character development

    Cons:
    - Some bugs
(e.g. Couple instances of my weapon going invisible when killing an enemy, then reappearing after killing them lol)
    - It tries to be realistic, but didn't go as far as I expected
(e.g. Reloading a 2 bullet mag, to add 3 more bullets to it, but your character drops the old mag on the ground that had the spare bullet in it)
(e.g. Dina teleports to her horse when you get on yours if she's not directly next to it)
    - Looting became boring and repetitive over time
(i.e. Pick up screws, pick up a bullet in a drawer, open a safe, etc., over and over again)

    The story?
The game clearly tries to mess with your emotions in a number of ways. It also displays multiple "lessons" that may or may not get you thinking:
    - The cliché lesson of revenge only leading to your own downfall and a feeling of hollowness was desperately injected. Except in this instance, you don't even get to exact that revenge in Ellie's POV. You kill hundreds of people, lose two fingers, lose Joel, lose your partner, just to simply... give up and not follow through? Lol. Yeah you kind of feel sorry for Abbie in the ending fight scene, but if this is the direction you want to take your game at least give Ellie (a.k.a. the player) SOMETHING after all that suffering and grinding.
    - There was also the lesson of "two sides to every story", which I have to admit was portrayed in a way that most people don't usually consider (I'm not referring to the timing of the scenes in-game, but the amount of details of the "other" person in general). I appreciated this aspect, but I didn't like the way they sequenced all the events and flashbacks.
    - Then there's the lesson of "you don't appreciate what you have until it's gone". Another aspect I liked (Because it's a valuable life lesson, just like the previous lesson). A pretty sad realization for Ellie, but unfortunately it was too little too late. It's heartbreaking that Ellie couldn't move on from what Joel did, and couldn't just enjoy her time with him to the fullest before he was killed.

    Relationship?
Okay we get it, Ellie's a lesbian. No one is saying there's a problem with that, but the way it was portrayed in game is like a religious person trying to force their religion on you. We don't need the details. Add that to the hyper-masculinity of Abbie, and the fact that Lev is a transsexual? Then you start pissing people off because it feels like you're trying to push an agenda in your game, when all we want to do is play games.

    Joel's Death?
Naughty Dog meeting room: "sHoCk FaCtoR gUyS!!!"
Sure, it makes sense for him to die because of everything he has done. But the way they killed him and the timing of it? Lol. Also why was he so trusting of these people in the first place? Doesn't make sense.

tl;dr / Summary: In my eyes the story seemed as if the devs watched GoT or TWD and said "I wanna do that! Look how successful they were!". Overall, it was an unnecessary sequel for anyone that has played the first game. Why would anyone want to waste hours upon hours playing a game just to see their beloved characters completely humiliated and destroyed? At least in GoT you were able to move on with other characters... But this just seems like a game for sadistic people or people that have never played the first game. It's $60USD for a 2020 Depression/SJW/Flashback Simulator... With some redeeming qualities (Especially if you've never played the first game)...

    SPOILERS!!!!

Lets start with a fact, the graphics, voice acting and setting are stunning, but beyond this obvious achievement, AS A SEQUEL this game is a undeniable disaster in terms of story telling. Standing alone it achieves much, BUT IT IS NOT A STAND ALONE TITLE.
The story is a filled with cheap tropes and with part 1 in mind is such a let down that it feels like a chore to play beyond its 2nd hour. The idea of character continuity is non-existent and there is no payoff to the story beyond the fact that it is told. The perspectives feel forced and there are so many cringe decisions the player is forced to make for the sake of attempting (and FAILING) to illicit a certain response that it honestly feel like sandpaper on your mind. Very few games make you hate want to kill your own character but this game takes this to a new level.

For those reviews you see praising this "Stunning and brave" telling of a "true" and revealing story about human suffering are shallow at best, and must be taken with a pinch of salt.

Just because a story is controversial doesn't make it a good story. But sure, play it for yourself if you want to grasp the depths of how deeply you can despise the character you are forced to play. You can expect to have forced empathy shoved down your throat with little to no effort placed on connecting the player to the character's struggles on an actual emotional level.
It's almost as if the game expects you to sympathize out of virtue, which is **** let's be honest.
With this lack of actual character development in mind, you can look forward to a story that leaves nothing gained for the player in terms of closure, beyond a ONCE AGAIN... FORCED... and so pathetically terribly at that, garbage excuse for some kinds of emotional forgiveness that is hollow and barren AT BEST.

The game is just another absolutely terrible story that tries to vilify the characters you loved and make you question your emotional connection to them by highlighting their bad choices in the past and painting them from the perspective of others who suffered. While in theory this might be an edgy commentary on the human condition its NOT A GOOD BASIS FOR A SEQUEL TO A STORY which was based on making you connect with the characters you are now told to hate. It LITERALLY spits on your emotions... scummy move.

So what does this all mean?

You get a story that throws your emotional bond from game one into the trash, then spits on it.
Then very forcefully shoves an attempted new emotional bond down your throat trying to get you to feel something for and understand the actions of the character that just became your MOST HATED character in the story. Then at the end, this she-devil of a character you still even after 10 hours of gameplay AS, hate with the very essence of your soul, gets away scott free and leaves the "world" worse off than before in the players mind. No payoff, nothing, thats it.... Replayability.... NONE, you hate the whole plot and are just glad this **** of **** storytelling is over.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I spent a good amount of time and effort avoiding spoilers, I figured it was all being blown out of proportion and there was no way a game as good as TLOU would get a sequel that was anywhere near as bad as everyone was claiming. I was warned by more than one friend not to spend the money but I did and now I understand the hate. I went into it knowing that Joel doesn't survive and I kinda understood that decision, he was getting older and honestly he wouldn't be capable of the level of fighting and action it would take to survive the hostile landscape they exist in. I expected him to go out in a cliche but respectful way, saving Ellie or Tommy (his only family) but the choice they made here just pisses in the face of all the emotion and connection players developed over the course of the first game. I assume a lot of people did what I did and replayed the first game recently to refresh all the info, so these emotions were in full force. The fact that NaughtyDog was willing to treat his character with that level of hate and disregard shows how little they care about anything other than making money by pushing whatever agenda is hot.

There are so many other ways they could have told this same story that would have been amazing, instead they chose a way that has established characters doing things that go completely opposite of their personalities and instead of figuring out a way to make us feel some sort of compassion for Abby you take the easy way out and force us to play as her for 10 hours and just hope we care enough at the end to overlook the insane choice Ellie makes by not killing Abby because woman beating in man's head with golf club, good but woman killing woman who took almost everything she cared about, including her fingers, bad.

The game has positives, when I first started it I was blown away by the visuals, they're breathtaking. The game play is good and everything seemed polished with none of the glitches or issues that seem to be present in most AAA titles lately. The only problem is the story and there is nothing that can save a story this bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow... just wow. I struggle to put my disappointment into words Because this was one of the angriest I’ve ever been playing a video game. I played the first last of us back when it came out in 2013 and absolutely loved it. The characters were flawed but like-able, the banter between Joel and Ellie was funny and heartfelt, and the story was phenomenal. You could say I was excited for the sequel to this game but honestly it’d be an understatement. So when i played and beat the 20 or so hour long story of the Last of Us 2 you could probably imagine how i reacted when Everything I loved about the last game this game was completely devoid of. The first gut-punch was the killing off of Joel a mere couple of hours into this gruelingly long game, I understand you don’t always get what you want when it comes to games and who they kill off but i felt this was completely unnecessary especially since it happened so early and at the hands of a new character. Who is this new character? Well she’s the main antagonist of the game, you wouldn’t know that though seeing as how you spend more time playing as her then you do fighting her. Meet Abby, a jacked female WLF soldier and her band of fellow less important WLF soldiers. (who despite playing a pretty big role in Joels death get killed in either a cutscene, quicktime event, or by the hands of someone other than Ellie.) I don’t know what Naughty dog was trying to do with these antagonists however because despite how much of Abby’s and their backstory I learned or how much i played with her, I still didn’t care and I still wanted to kill her. It almost seems like the only reason we get to play as Abby is to make the game longer than it has to be. Anyways throughout this game you spend 20+ hours playing as both Abby and Ellie, who’s relationship is complicated Because despite hating, fighting, shooting, and stabbing at each other throughout basically the entirety of the game never actually bring themselves to kill one-another. It’s like I as a player had no control over any of the characters actions, because I for one wanted to kill Abby the entire time so when finally Ellie gets her chance to at the very end of the game she chickens out and lets her live at the last second, atleast the gameplay is fun and the graphics are good though right? 1/10

However the game play is decent, and I say that because there are a lot of bugs in the game. Animations occurring when they should not be, AI getting in the way.
