I'll admit the gameplay was cool and with that i mean the looting, fighting and climbing. but story was not to good in my opinion. the biggest reason being cause they killed Joel like i grew up playing the last of us 1(i'm talking 12 to 17 years old) which made me create a relationship with Joel and Ellie especially Joel. And to then see him die the way he did just broke my heart and then they expected me to like the character who killed him? hell no like i really don't care about Abby or her dad and i fully understand why Joel did what he did to save his 2nd daughter figure since he had already lost his actual daughter. If you are gonna kill a main character do it the right way and a few examples of games who did that are Red Dead Redemption 2(Arthur) and Telltale The Walking Dead(Lee). I also feel like if we are gonna kill hundreds of people and then just let Joel's actual killer go it's just stupid Expand

1st off, the mainstream critics like Tassi and company are crying. Which is ironic considering the mainstream had this 10/10 and gamers were supposed to believe that rather than the more practical reviews coming in that are unfavorable from real gamers. The graphics are great, but what is that without a compelling story? Nothing, an empty game. Tons of violence ok, but there's no logic in the journey nor any of the deaths, nothing that holds weight. Of course Tassi and company say 'prepare for critics being out of touch" blah blah. He prefaces that statement because he knows that is the truth. Mainstream critics just try to protect their review copies and nothing more, even if a mainstream critic didn't get a copy they'd tip toe around critical reviews or come to the defense of the game in some way, acting as a neutral savior. Mainstream critics are like the government, you can't trust them, its up to the people to see the truth for what it is, decide for themselves and not forget all the propaganda that came before it. I have loved ND games, but this one falls way short of the magic that studio should be capable of, even expected of. TLU could be a series game that follows the value of Ellie's immunity and the complexity of her Joel's relationship while being hunted by those who want Ellie, and those who just want to do harm. Evolve the clickers, try to make a home in the world. Have some decision making moments like RDR2. Give a more powerful story with substance, make deaths meaningful. No one is mad at this game because of homophobia, that's just propaganda by mainstream critics to pander to the feet of Sony and ND. No, users are mad because regardless of the fate of the characters, there was no point to the story, no power. When the game ends you're glad, disappointed and kind of just feel robbed of the magic of the 1st game. Are some reviews bombing sure, but guess what? The same can be said about the mainstream critics reviews glorifying the game too, remember that. It cuts both ways. Decide for yourself and speak up. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A long awaited game for everyone. But the disappointment with this game is great. The story is a huge disappointment in every way, they destroyed the character Joel. They deconstructed everything that pleased the first game, and that made him famous and loved all over the world. The graphics and game-play are very good, as well as the soundtrack, but that's about it. I have no motivation to continue playing. I don't even want a sequel to that, they dismissed Joel very early, he still had a lot to offer in the plot. How did Sony allow you to do this with your most beloved IP? Bad story, bad gameplay, So your supposed to buy into the narrative that is laid in front of you, Abby who kills Joel after he saves her, then your supposed to feel angry for Ellie when she for god knows what reason to spare Abby after killing so many, the story just goes off the rails, and its sad to see so many people just gush over the thing like its a masterpiece, Naughty Dog would've been better off making a sequel to Crash Bandicoot Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Low rating because of the seemingly intentional misleading marketing campaign run by Naughty Dog. All trailers and gameplay released gave everyone the impression this was gonna be an Ellie focused game, with Joel at her side. Instead we got a basic revenge story. Worst of all is that pretty much half of the game isn't even focused on Ellie, but Abby??? She introduces herself like we should all immediately be able to tell who she is Such a shame, visually it looks gorgeous and it probably would have been a decent standalone game. Joel dies with the least amount of build up or even respect - literally spitting on him, was that really necessary Neil? - and the way the story keeps reminding us of the consequences of killing and revenge and then ending the game with Ellie losing everything but somehow Abby gets to walk away??? It seems that Neil and his team have read a dictionary that swapped the words deep with misery. Ellie literally loses all things precious to her which is supposed to be this deep message of revenge and brutally killing leads to nothing but more of the same but fails to deliver since Abby somehow seems to deserve a break.

Imagine buying a Batman where you play as Robin instead, then Batman gets killed, not by the Joker or Bane or some known villain, but rather by a no name villain that has never been seen in the DC universe until that point right in the beginning of the game... and you're left as Robin to get revenge with the help, not from the Teen Titans or Batgirl or other young heroes, instead from random characters you don't know and don't care about and every now and then you play as the villain forcibly as an attempt to make the plot interesting. It's just bad writing. The game is also very easy with no challenge let's be honest.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start by saying that TLOU1 is my favourite game ever, rivaled only by Metal Gear Solid. But it's sequel, simply put, is an extremely unpleasant game in most aspects. From the story to the needless violence in most interactions. Here's why:

First, they kill off Joel in the first hours of the game, one of the most beloved and iconic PS4 characters of all time. We don't even get any positive interactions between him and Ellie before this happens, as they are barely speaking, from what we hear. Then, the whole point of the rest of the game is this incessant search for revenge, which endangers every other interesting character in the game. Revenge itself it's a silly and overused motivation, in every realm, but here it feels specially empty. Even after discovering that Dina is pregnant, Ellie still won't leave Seattle and choses to risk it all due to some bloodlust that has nothing to do with her character from the first game. This was entirely off-putting. (Also, Joel would CERTAINLY be using codenames since everyone in that hospital from the first game called him by his real name. There is NO WAY that Joel would be this careless. It's just really hard to buy.)

Despite not agreeing with Ellie, the game is ok until halfway through, which is when it really took a very sharp downturn to me and most people: you take control of Abby, Joel's killer, for pretty much the rest of the game. This shell of a character, who you are supposed to 'bond' with and care for her motivations and backstory, but in reality you hate and wish she'd just drop dead to the first Clicker she sees. You are FORCED to control her through FIFTEEN HOURS just as she has Ellie at gunpoint and kills Jesse with a headshot. FIFTEEN HOURS. Hence, a very unpleasant 15 hours since you're curious and NOT AT ALL interested in Abby and her dealings.

This is when i started to rush things. Stopped exploring every single building, stopped being stealthy in combat, stopped reading notes - just stopped enjoying the game altogether. I did not care for any of it, i just wanted to play out the scene between Ellie and her. Nothing else. Therefore, it was impossible for me to care about Yara and her brother/sister. It felt like an attempt to prolongue the story with these bleak, non-interesting characters, of whom we've had plenty of in other games. It all felt very vague, especially the Abby-Owen endless interactions in the Aquarium.

The ending: after being forcefully dragged through the entire campaing, having to do things you don't agree with and seeing, going on missions that don't make ANY sense (like the Ground Zero part to save Yara, another character you don't care for) and seeing A LOT of violence along the way, you finally get some peace at the farm. This is by far the best area of the game as far as character interactions go, as Ellie and Dina's relationship seems very real and you can almost believe that those are real people who, despite being scarred phisically and mentally, are attempting to have a normal, happy life. Which is why it makes you drop your controller and just say 'Get the **** outta here' when you realise Ellie is going to do the EXACT SAME THING all over again: chase the girl who killed Joel and who spared you TWO TIMES.

At this point, i found myself simply not caring: not caring about Ellie after so many dumb decisions, not caring about Abby since she killed a fan favourite (and is just an extremely weak character all around) and not caring about revenge after everything that went down at Seattle. I was just completely uninterested in the closure, and definitely uninterested in the violence that would inevitably come with it. As it did.

In that last hour of the game, Ellie loses everything. From the knife that her mom gave her (and was the only memento she had of her), to a couple of fingers (and the ability to play guitar like Joel taught her) and her family, since Dina left the farm with JJ. But i was weirdly unaffected by this, as the game had lost me entirely on this second vengeance run. None of it made any sense and it all felt way too forced. Hell, in that last fight i did not even care who won, as i came to despise both characters. THAT is how unpleasant this entire game was, despite looking amazing.

Overall, Naughty Dog traded two deep, beloved characters for two shallow and uninteresting ones, in Abby and Lev. Both Joel and Ellie's characters came to an end, in different manners, but they did. Joel is dead and Ellie is no longer a character we love - quite the opposite. She's made so many dumb choices along the way that it became impossible to relate with her.

And so it is. She wanders off into the woods, with the Fireflies symbol, implying she's gonna try to find them again and develop a vaccine, so her life has meaning again.

Thee game looks amazing, has terrific gameplay and sound effects, but it goes out of it's way to make you feel TERRIBLE and, in the end, leaves you with nothing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay, graphics, and the other technical things in this game were beautiful. I liked the LGBT+ representation as it makes for a more realistic world. However, what made The Last of Us 1 such a great game, was the story, well developed characters, and the consistency of the actions those characters took with their personalities. My two main issues with this game was the manner in which Joel died, as well as how Ellie killed all those people to avenge Joel, but when it came to the one who was actually responsible, she lets her go.
Joel in the first game is characterized as an extremely cautious veteran in his world, he was able to spot an ambush with a single look, and furthermore, even Ellie who was far less experienced at the time had a distinct distrust in strangers, refusing to give them actual names. In Joel’s death scene, Tommy gives his real name which is understandable as he didn’t go through what Joel did and hurt/make enemies of nearly as many people as Joel did. Joel on the other hand, actually gave his real name while being in a room full of absolute strangers surrounding him on either side? Not to mention they were both aware of rival groups like hunters, WLF, and others that would willingly kill anyone not associated with them. Yet he gives his actual name, and then gets killed. Furthermore, the placing of his death is amazingly bad taking into account that we’re supposed to attempt to empathize with Abby as we play as her for a large part of the game. It only made me hate the game more as I played as this character who does atrocious things to the people I grew to love from the first game as well as many innocent people.
Ellie’s initial response to Joel’s death was perfect, she was ready to go after Abby immediately to avenge her murdered father figure. I like most of what happens in the story from that point on, until it comes to killing Abby. Not only does she not kill her for murdering Joel, she doesn’t kill her when she has the opportunity, seconds after ABBY BITES HER FINGERS OFF. It isn’t consistent with who Ellie is as a character, she has a body count of hundreds if not in the thousands, and the one person she refuses to kill is the one who murdered her “father”?
It is useless for me to state my issues with the game without presenting a way to fix it. As shown by your user score, the fans overwhelmingly dislike this game, it spit on the beautiful legacy of the previous game, similarly to how Joel’s dead body was spit on and insulted. As stated previously, I am not adverse to Joel dying, however it should have been done in a more ‘consistent with the character’ manner. For example, instead of him dying in the beginning, we have Joel, Ellie, Dina and whoever else set out on a journey to investigate rumors of a cure/vaccine being found. This happens right after Joel tells Ellie the truth of what happened with the Fireflies and the ending of the last game. She is extremely confused and conflicted, Dina comes in and helps her work through it, building that romance, and together they guilt Joel into going with them to investigate. Simultaneously, we meet Abby, who is searching for the man who murdered her father. We watch her develop relationships with her companions, play as her as she overcomes different obstacles and they grow to love her. The theme of forgiveness becomes an underlying theme as during Ellie’s journey, she starts as being hateful and disrespectful to Joel for lying to her and taking away humanity’s chance at stopping the infection. But through multiple days/weeks of traveling together, being reminded of old times through flashbacks, Dina playing Devil’s advocate as she would have never been able to fall in love with Ellie if Joel hadn’t saved her etc. She would come to forgive Joel. On Abby’s side, her father was a surgeon who tried to find a cure, so she heads to where a ‘cure’ is found(same place as Ellie) for clues on her father’s killer. Eventually, they meet as Joel and Ellie save Abby. They start traveling together and both parties start to become friends as they work their way towards the cure, once they get there Abby realizes Joel is the man who murdered her father, but is conflicted as she knows the reason why, and Ellie as well as the others convince her to forgive Joel. Ellie helps make the cure with her blood or something like that, and boom, it ends with Ellie and Joel playing in their guitars with their new family around them.
If this is too much of a radical change, then a simpler one would be Ellie finishing the job and killing Abby, then Levi. When she kills Levi she mirrors the words Joel said when he killed Marleen. Then the ending is the same except that when she finds she is unable to play the song, she flashes back to Joel and says “I guess I’m the last of us” or something along those lines and walks off.

I just played it for myself and boy I tell you it was disappointing. First off, people like me that hate the game don’t hate it because Joel died, it’s how he died, he died like a side character. It was a failure, I don’t mind seeing Joel die, as long as it’s done properly and that’s not it. It was stupid, like the first game didn’t happen, and I hate how they make you play as Abby afterwards like what???? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Every step forward in this game's narrative confirmed my greatest fear: that not only did a sequel never need to exist, but that making one had the very real potential to harm the legacy of two characters we all grew to love over the course of the first game. Worse still, we were sold a false bill of goods. Every advert we saw and every word out of Naughty Dog's mouth told us that we would be going on another journey with Ellie and Joel. We did no such thing. Instead we were treated to Ellie and Joel being brutalized and tossed aside so that Naughty Dog could force upon us a new protagonist that none of us wanted or cared about. The utter contempt with which Naughty Dog treated its own beloved characters and the dishonest way in which they've dealt with the fandom override any and all of the good qualities this game has. What score could I possibly give a game that seemingly exists for no other reason than to trash what I love and spit in my face except zero? (Note that I was forced to give it at least a 1 because the website has decided not to permit reviews giving the game a zero despite zero being an option) Expand

Good graphics, ok gameplay but the main selling point of TLOU was by far the story, the bond between Ellie and Joel and they totally ruined everything the first part built up to. Killing off Joel early and forcing us to play the completely boring and bland character that killed him isn't enjoyable in any way. From there on the game had already lost me.

It's just sad what they did to the masterpiece that was TLOU1. Biggest disappointment ever for a sequel in my opinion.

The game is really disappointing, the game is visually beautiful, the only plus to a very negative game, but that doesn't make up for the horrible story. You are forced to play a Ma'am, the most unliked character possible, with a horrible story, no arch, and one of your beloved characters that isn't killed, by the way all men die in the game, is the villain. Abby wins in the end with no downside, it really speaks to the woke mess of a game this is.
