I am really sorry but this is a HUGE disappointment. I could not believe I would ever say that. I was looking for this game since I finished TLOU I. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yes the game is beautiful, that I have to admit. The gameplay was fluid and the environments have great atmosphere. But the reason I play these games is for the story... and what a horror show this was. I seriously considered stopping playing 2-3 times because of the decisions that were made. I will not go into detail about the anti-male feel I had during the whole game, but it really made me uncomfortable at times. On a gameplay level it slightly improved on the previous game, but it also borrowed so much from it, playing it very safe. All in all I can't understand where the 10/10 comes from .. I really don't. And the trailers did indeed lie about the story played out .. big time.
Edit: Just finished the game and I need to change my score from 2 to 1. This is the first time I hated the game I was playing. never happened to me. Forcing fans of the first game to play as the killer of your favorite character of all time is not ok .. ever.

Now that that's out of the way, let's go into what I don't like about this game:
    - Story is bad.
    - Dialogues are cringy
    - The love interest always brings up her jewishness when it's unnecessary and religion was never even mentioned in the first game.
    - It's also funny how you coincidentally find yourself in a synagogue but can't even target jewish symbols. Let's look at Neil Druckmann's early life section on Wikipedia to find out why...
    - Speaking of Neil Druckmann, I love how he inserted himself in the game just so he could spit on Joel's corpse and **** a transgender in motion capture.
-I also love how the first game was all about surviving in a ****ed up apocalyptic world and the relationship between Joel and Ellie, while the second game is about revenge and having a lesbian roadtrip.
    - The gameplay is really boring and doesn't contribute to the experience. You barely even play this ''game''. It should've been a movie.
    - The fact that Sony and Naughty dog lied about the importance of Joel and shut down anyone talking about the spoilers really shows that they knew people wouldn't buy the game if they knew the dumpster fire of a story they created.

    This game visually looks stunning.

The sounds, the voice-acting, and the performances done by most of the cast do a great job. The things that drag this game down to a cold and dark abyss is the writing and overall direction. The dialogue is written haphazardly and shoddily, old characters feel like caricatures of their actual selves and new characters ARE caricatures as they don't

The sounds, the voice-acting, and the performances done by most of the cast do a great job. The things that drag this game down to a cold and dark abyss is the writing and overall direction.

The dialogue is written haphazardly and shoddily, old characters feel like caricatures of their actual selves and new characters ARE caricatures as they don't bring any depth and are as bland as unseasoned chicken.

The decisions characters make are laughably comical, people change their minds on a whim and in a game trying to be serious it feels like someone made a painting of a lifelike stick figure pretending it was a work from Michelangelo.

Gameplay though improved from the original still works and is at best serviceable to get to the main and end objective of a Last of Us game which is the story. The combat looks better, and feels a bit better but its like putting a fresh coat of paint and asphalt over a bridge you've gone over for years. It'll get you to you're destination.

And the journey that this game will be taking you through will be filled with shock value, things are not setup properly, payoffs are weak and disappointing, things will happen that will be attributed to the game world being harsh and unforgiving but in reality are just dumb and not thought out.

The game features a meandering plot, flashbacks, and just not a hint of remorse for the players that will be, in the vein of The Last of Us Part II, torn to pieces towards silly plot-points, long side "missions", and an ending that would and should make the player feel absolutely sick to their stomach and not in any way signifying that the story works. It is because the story how ever you look at it does not work that the player feels betrayed, abandoned, and baffled.

Six to seven years of development, Neil Druckmann and all the other higher ups in Naughty Dog that let this happen wasted fan goodwill, wasted the efforts of the graphic team, the technical team, the sound team, and all the other hardworking men and women trying to bring entertainment and enjoyment to the people.

Ruined the entire series an hour and a half in, story is spotty you kill the main character from the first game with some Random woman and then play as her for half the game. Way to make fans of the first game bitter, they overworked Naughty Dog employees and pushed them to design a game so loosely based on the first. Maybe you shouldn’t have fired the original writer because they actually made TLOU1 a masterpiece while this is just a cash grab bc it’s named a sequel of a good game. If this was a spin off I can see the artistic direction A LITTLE BIT but it’s still so messy but being a direct sequel is a shame to the Last of Us that released years prior. Boooo this game Expand

I finished the game today and I was sadly disappointed with the whole experience. Besides the graphics, which blew me away and really added to the story telling. The problem is the story sucked. I'm not saying that because of the heart wrenching moral decisions. That's what really shined in the first game. Knowing what Joel went through with his daughter Sarah. Then to have Ellie forced into his life, a young, good girl who desperately needed at least one person there for her. You can imagine how painful it had to be for the both of them and even understand if Joel thought it would be to cold to just move past what happened with Sarah and now treat Ellie as his girl. That game hurt....but in a good way. TLOU2 feels like it tried to recreate tragedies but left out hope around the corner. In the first game you are watching as Joel and Ellies bond slowly, slowwwwly gets stronger. Giving hope that maybe the could bring a bit of happiness to each other in the middle of this bleak and tragic apocalypse. TLOU2 left out addictive hope and suspense around every cut scene. In stead the story felt very cold and emo, "the world sucks and we're all just doing what we have to in order to survive" and then repeats that line another dozen times and ends in the same fashion. I heard Neil Druckmen didnt care if people really liked the game or really hated it as long as they were passionate. I dont think he realized or maybe didn't care why people were captivated by the Last of Us originally, but it feels like the sequel came from a very bitter place by very bitter people. Expand

Word of advice the characters that you loved in the first game? Don't get too attached to them, the characters do stupid things that they wouldn't normally do (Like Joel blindly walking into an ambush!). This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unfortunately, this game is a travesty. I wanted to come in and enjoy my time with Ellie and Joel, I wanted to experience the world after Joel doomed the human race by killing the surgeon and saving Ellie, making the hard choice that his own personal needs and desires were more important to him than the survival of humanity. I really wanted to experience that aftermath, to live in that moment and feel guilt for my actions in Part One.
I didn't get to. I got to experience Joel act completely out of character and die because suddenly, out of nowhere, our hardened father figure is naive. I was forced to watch as the life drained from this monster of a man, and then go on a journey of revenge. At least I'd get my revenge.
Nope, I murder my way through the liberation front for a chance to kill Abby, the woman who killed Joel, only to suddenly be forced to watch her walk away, because suddenly, and without any narrative reason, Ellie decided that killing was bad.
This game is not worth your money, this game is not worth your time. I am writing this to save you the hassle.

The characters in this game seem out of place, they did have good casting however compared to the game like Horizon or the Netflix Witcher series. But this game had no "feeling" to the storyline. What made the first game great was the bonding of two characters and the development. This game felt so empty, I felt more confused with the characters as the story progress. These are not the same characters we known and loved. This game is a waste of time and money. I should never rely on IGN reviews because this game was not really polished. So many plot holes. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m gonna start off by saying that I don’t like this type of gameplay, but I enjoyed the last of us one because of the story and characters, I wish I could say the same thing about the last of us 2, I literally felt empty throughout most of the game the only good parts were the intro and Ellie’s flashbacks. I get that they’re trying to explain that revenge and vengeance are bad and they Will never have a good outcome but this isn’t how you explain it. Take for example the god of war series, they explained it perfectly. Cratos basically killed all of his enemies but the lesson learnt was that killing them could never bring him peace nor bring back his family. However in this game Ellie literally loses everyone she loves and never gets revenge.
Also do you really expect us to forgive or sympathize with Abby simply because you gave us her backstory at the worst time possible? I never expected NaughtyDog to make a story this bad and if someone told me this story before the game came out I would think they Were reading fan fiction, save your money.

Expand

The forced, cringe relationships are garbage. The main issue is how lackluster the story is, and how bad its structured.

This is game of thrones season 8 level trash writing. The first half of the game is largely a walking simulator with nonstop relationship drama. After some questionable story decisions It devolves into flashback inception, forcing you to play a new, boring character. With no spoilers, this character did something controversial, and then the game makes you play 8-10 hours of flashbacks within flashbacks AS them to try to make you like the character. There is no liking this person. It was ultimately just a side quest with more characters you dont care about. The game could have finished 3 hours in and the conclusion, the state of all the characters you care about, would be the same.

A sad state for this franchise and even sadder for the critics. Honestly who **** knows how reviewers managed to give this above a 5, let alone Game of The Year scores...

I watched it, then watched it again, then I recommended it to friends and family. That weekend, I literally went out and paid hundreds of dollars to buy a PS3 *specifically* to play that game. I’ve now beaten the original TLOU on every difficulty level. 100%. I’ve read every issue of the tie-in comic. I bought the art book. I’ve watched all the interviews and behind the scenes things. I’ve read the entire Wiki. I took home the store displays and posters of the game when my local GameStop got rid of them. I’ve stanned that game to all my friends and family for years, whether or not they're gamers. I’ve watched people on Twitch speedrun it to completion, hundreds of times. TLOU is one of the best “movies” I’ve ever seen and one of the greatest video games I’ve ever played. I used to check IMDB every week or so, specifically to see if there was any news on the TV series, even after it was cancelled the first time.

But now all of that is gone. I have zero interest in this franchise now. That's what this game did.

I’m not going to complain about the politics of the game, because frankly, I don’t care. I just want to play video games. I like games made by creators from both sides of the political aisle and starring all varieties of protagonist. But if you want dismiss this as me being a bot or a crazy incel or whatever, you can go right ahead. The truth is that my issue is that this game forgets what TLOU is supposed to be about. Trust me, as I said, I’ve read literally everything ever released about this franchise. The original idea was to have 2 characters experience the world of the game together, and have their relationship change over the course of those events. This franchise is *about* those two characters and their relationship. That is the entire point of the original game. Neither one of them is more important than the other, they were designed to be a duo. The franchise was about these damaged people, learning to trust and love again, amid the zombie apocalypse. This game undoes all of that. It makes it pointless. It punishes you for caring about the story the original told, then it tells you that you were wrong for ever feeling it in the first place.

I am fine with violence in games, and I’m fine with characters dying, what I’m not fine with is story choices that don’t serve the characters and characters which don’t serve the story. I’m not fine with game mechanics that were already on the verge of being outdated on the PS3 but now return in basically the same form. I’m not fine with you lying to me in your trailers, because you KNEW that I wouldn’t buy it if I knew the truth about what you were doing. I'm not fine with you completely changing everything I previously liked about this franchise: a damaged father and his surrogate daughter fighting monsters, of both the human and infected variety. You did nothing interesting to replace that. You gave me nothing to love, you only provided me with innumerable reasons to hate. Specifically, you gave me many reasons to hate this game, these characters, and this company.

I signed up to Metacritic today *specifically* to review this game. That’s how mad it made me. That’s how badly Naughty Dog seems to misunderstand their own franchise and the reasons why people like me enjoyed the original. I'm sure there are plenty of people who will love this game. But I am not one of them. At all. I never want to see it again.

So, this is the end of our long road together, TLOU. I think I’ll focus on franchises and creators who don’t deliberately go out of their way to make me hate them, because that’s their definition of “art.” You said "I'd rather have people passionately hate it than just be like, 'Yeah, it was OK.'" Well, it's not okay and I absolutely HATE it. So I guess you got your wish.

As for the so-called agenda the game purports to shovel on with all the subtlety of a dump truck, that exists to some degree based on where you sit on the political/identity spectrum I guess. I can see how many people with certain life experiences would find this game initially emotionally satisfying however the totality of the package feels like being forced to relive a brutal and highly personal trauma that holds little lasting universal human appeal. The ending left me feeling empty and hopeless and wanting to step outside and get some sunshine and fresh air for relief from the claustrophobic emotional pall this experience cast over me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I still can’t believe it. They killed off Joel: The central character, in the beginning of the sequel, by a character we aren't even familiar with, understand or even respect... with a rusty golf club? The miscellaneousness of the object used in the bludgeoning, makes it feel all the more random and disrespectful too.

What’s more painful is knowing how much that his death was unnecessary, and could have easily been avoided. You see, Joel was so paranoid in The Last of Us 1, that in the beginning of the game (before Sarah’s death), he wouldn’t even stop to help (in all likelihood) innocent bystanders, who were begging and pleading for his help. Another example is later in the game, when Joel and Ellie are driving, but abruptly stop in their tracks, to see an injured bystander, staggering in the road, begging for help. However, Joel is able to deduce that the bystander isn't hurt at all, and he’s actually part of a group of bandits, who are attempting to bait Joel and Ellie into an ambush. So to avoid directly engaging with the enemy, Joel accelerates his car, and tries to speed through their barricade. Which, of course failed but we all know how that turned out. This showed that Joel is perceptive, experienced, dependable, intelligent and in touch with his instincts.

But in The Last of Us 2, Naughty Dog ret-cons that, by forcing Joel and Tommy to make completely erratic, inconsistent and outright dumb character choices, by having Joel and Tommy give out their name, relation to each other and camp's location, to a bunch of suspicions strangers, in their territory… just so Joel has a reason to die… in a really arbitrary way. What does this remind you of? https://go.aws/2NpAS4T

Is this seriously what Neil Druckmann did to, arguably, one of the most beloved characters, after so many push-backs, delays and intentionally deceptive marketing? How could [those responsible] for this catastrophic sequel, be so sleazy to the people that held (and still hold) TLOU1 in such high regard? What a cruel, disappointing, anti-climactic and pointless way for Joel to go. Not even a sound, not even so much as last word, as he's bludgeoned to death by a stranger, who makes Arnold Schwarzenegger (in his day) look like a 10 year old girl.

I understand that most sequels don't match up to their predecessors (it happens and it’s not always the creator's fault)... but this time, creator decisions seem… not only *100% intentional,* but malicious. Yes, the graphics are impressive, and the action is top notch, as expected, but Joel deserved better than this (death-wise and character-wise), and so did Ellie as a matter of fact.

Why is Ellie (before the death of Joel) a mopey, lazy, withdrawn, whiner all of a sudden? What happened to that little can of whoop-ass from TLOU1? She was the perfect contrast to Joel and his jaded outlook on life… because, in spite of dire circumstances and past experiences, Ellie’s wide-eyed and adventurous attitude, brought out a side of Joel that--after the death of Sarah--was buried deep down inside him, and thought to be lost forever. I understand that Ellie would be more mature, mellowed out and sensible as teenager, but that’s no reason to strip her of all her charisma, optimism, precociousness and sense of adventure.

It seems like something happened internally, between Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann, so he just decided to take it out on the game. I mean, Joel being spat on (even if it was by another character) is so mean-spirited… And then, to add insult to injury, it’s expected of the player to insert themselves into the character responsible for the main character’s deplorable exit from the game?

This is why you should not go to professional critics, as many can be paid off to give positive reviews, which is disingenuous and often inaccurate. Go to the consumer: they are the main demographic of the game, and they (*we) are more liable to give you our honest opinion on a product, as we are the ones that pay fully for the experience. Whereas, some paid-off reviewers don’t even need to pay for, or even experience the product in it’s fullness (as intended) and can still say the product in question is “perfect” with impunity.

As much as I think a sequel to The Last of Us could work and had promise, The Last of Us 2 is a complete deconstruction of already established and beloved characters, that suffer from character motivations and personality changes that don't even make sense. In the end, the only question I have for The Last of Us 2 is... why make a ‘part two’ to your story, if characters aren’t consistent with who they were in the prequel? This is how character arcs end before the sequel starts.

    Disappointing.

Although I will not spoil the plot for those that still wish to play it, I invite you to check out the spoilers and not pay $60 to a company that actively hates it's fan base and cannot write a good story. There was so much potential here, but they seem to be more interested in making the fans hate the characters in the first game and using heavy handed manipulation tactics to do so. The first game was so well written, but this game uses every cheap trick in the book to get it's message across. And no matter what anyone tells you, almost no one is upset by the use of LGBT characters, Ellie's DLC for the first game is where we found out she was gay and everyone still loved her, and everyone still loves her. Abby is only hated because she's a flat character with no personality and commits one of the most disgusting acts of cowardly violence in video game history and they expect you to empathize with her because "she's human" Everyone is human, I think Naughty Dog doesn't give their fan base enough credit for their intelligence. I find it hard to believe any of the critical reviewers who called this a 10/10 didn't receive some sort of compensation for their scores. Truly disgusting and horribly written story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This also means that not a single character trait held any significance to the story as a whole in the last of us 2: they are interchangeable. This is not saying they are not "unique", because they all have their own "trait", but the trait just don't present any plot significance at all.

The gameplay is also aged badly: tossing a item to distract an enemy is the only true stealth mechanic with the exception of just literal x-ray vision should be only the chassis of the stealth mechanic: not the entirety of it. With games like metal gear solid and hitman, this makes the stealth mechanic in the last of us 2 seem so insignificant and limiting in comparison, and having enemies going in very linear patrol routes of one small area doesn't help at all, wasting the potential of the cosmetically gorgeous level design. The combat revolves around dodging, hitting, and shooting with brutal satisfaction: which wouldn't be so bad, even great, but the inclusion of a dodge button really ruined the experience, as some enemies would just get into superarmored mode/locked into animation and not stop attacking you until you are forced to either dodge or die.

This lack of freedom also goes to the story telling elements as well: you play as not just Ellie, but also forced to play as Abby: a character that does some horrible things, and the player have no say in the matter and are just forced to go through with the decision made. The fact that this game forces its player base to play an unlikable character or forced to not progress makes this the worst game I've ever played.

I never felt sympathy or ever cared for her character. The story even with Joel’s death could’ve been fine, but it just wasn’t and leaves with nothing. Very disappointing. Expand

1 point for the graphics. The way of treating the characters is terrible. Naughty dog doesn’t respect the fans anymore. Epic bad ending. I won’t spoil. But I feel the same after the ending of game of thrones...

Terrible writing and direction. Everyone else on the team like programmers, designers and voice actors worked hard and did an outstanding job. Don't buy this game.

Una secuela decepcionante e inclusion progre forzada e innecesaria, además de que te lo restriegan y saturan en todo el juego.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
