They shove this SJW bull down your throats by making it what the non existent plot is all about, making the characters bland and bringing real life ' political correctness ' into the game. Then to top it all off, they try to get you to sympathise with the antagonist who killed off one of the best characters in modern gaming and ruin Ellie's character as well. Massive disappointment and is not worthy to be in the same series as the original game.… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. wonderful gameplay seriously is really beautiful and the soundtrack too but imagine being in a post-pandemic world and your priority is that the world knows that you are "like this", we all expected Joel to die and possibly Ellie too but not in such a stupid way as they have done it, in just 4 years enormous progress has been shown when in the first one barely saw any salvageable things from the modern world totally meaningless. A total example that most of the sequels are rubbish… Expand

My expectation was high but when I played the game it was one of the worst game experience ever. Killing Joel at the beginning was a bad idea. Great graphics and game-play but the story is so bad and I feel so disappointed. To be honest I will avoid all naughty dog future games and I will save my money because clearly they are taking another direction.… Expand

    The most important part of a game is the history, is the one that invite you to complete a long game and enjoy the process, but in this case the story si so bad from the beginnig, that it ruined the whole experience, such a disappointment, when i heard the leak of the game i though "there is no way they would ruin the game like that! must be a mistake" i was mistaken

    This game is pure garbage.
    It has great graphics, but story and gameplay is from 2006. The first game was way much better, I mean a lot better.
    No word about that SJW agenda. I think they tried so hard about this game, but at the end they dind´t make it.

    two hours in and I don’t want to keep playing. I had such high hopes going in, avoided every spoiler and leak I could... but it wasn’t enough. They should have left the story as it was and ended it with the first game. It’s a shame. Everything is so unbelievably forced and I feel like the story really doesn’t go anywhere. Only reason I give it a 1 rather than a zero is because thetwo hours in and I don’t want to keep playing.     Extremely disappointed. I can't believe it is this bad. I heard that the story is controversial but I decide to trust Naughtydog. The artwork is brilliant, but this is the worst game experience I have ever had.

    Ugh. The visuals are about the only thing this game offers. The story writers must have phoned in this game, or been replaced since it ends up being less a fun sequel to a great game, and more a 10 hour long commercial for whatever agendas they want to push.

    I'm hoping this is the last of the series after playing this mess.

Not our fault, the gamers, that they tried to bribe their way into different groups. Gamers loved the first game, all types of gamers there was no need to try to be PC on something that was was not wrong.… Expand

    A game with probably some of the best visuals I’ve ever seen, but a garbage story, lack of gameplay mechanics variety, unlikeable characters, and honestly just feels like a major step back in the franchise. I would say this is nothing more than a big budget fan fic.

On top of the terrible story and character development, NaughtyDog saturated the game with a SJW political agenda, warping characters and the overall feel from the original game so much that it becomes unrecognizable.     I had this game on pre-order for 2 years. The first game is one of my favourite games of all time. THIS IS NOT THE LAST OF US. It plays like a last of us fan fiction, by someone who was trying to ruin every character in the game.

The main character of the first game is completely dismantled and re-written as a garbage person, they made up a contrived way to kill him off, then you play as his murderer. The cast of this game is completely forgettable, dies fast and 10 hours later the game reminds you of them once so you can feel bad that you killed them. Its a completely unstructured mess that deserves all the hate and it did not understand why the first game resonated with so many people. I still think of the characters from the first game from time to time, the second, I care not one bit what kind of people they were, they die fast and the characters just move on.… Expand

    You know how they say someone with the personality of a 3 but the looks of a 10 is still a 3? I feel like that's a pretty good analogy for this game. It looks amazing, but the story is awful. It just goes to show you can't add gay characters to a game and then just deflect all the criticism you get as "anti-sjw."

Graphically the game just isn't much more impressive than Last of Us Remastered, focusing on mood lighting to make up for the seven year old PS4 hardware to cover up its very clear cracks, while still utterly paling in comparison to Red Dead Redemption 2. Gameplay likewise is barely different from the first game, with minimal additions to how it's played (a very crappy dedicated jump button is a perfect symbol of this). Stages feel a bit more linear believe it or not, and no moment even approaches scary or even particularly tense.
    Both of these disappointments, however, could've been made up for if it weren't for Naughty Dog's worst story yet. Where Last of Us 1 was a nuanced character driven plot about a father rekindling his humanity, and a child growing into a hardened survivor, Last of Us 2 took a much more generic "revenge is bad" route. Joel is unceremoniously murdered after falling for a trick that he himself would've come up with during his early days as a raider, with Niel Druckmann's self insert immediately spitting on his still warm corpse as Ellie watches. Anything related to the core plot (Ellie as the cure and how or if she can survive this) are immediately pushed beyond the backburner in lieu of petty politics and soulless relationship drama. New bland characters that nobody would ever care about flood into the mix, filling the story with drivel as you shoot increasingly repetitive zombies and cultists. The game chooses to mix things up with clumsy flashbacks (including flashbacks within flashbacks; absolutely shameless), putting the player in control of Abby, the now infamous she-hulk who murdered Joel in her own act of petty revenge. The rest of the game focuses on Ellie losing everyone and everything she has left just to kill Abby, with even Joel's iconic lie at the end of TLOU1 getting brushed off and forgotten quickly. And when Ellie does finally catch up to Abby, after killing swaths of people, relationships, and infected, and losing her precious guitar-playing fingers in the process, she decides that Abby's life isn't worth the price she already overpaid for, leaves her alive, and goes home to find out that karen took the kids. I'm not kidding, after learning this valuable lesson, her girlfriend leaves with their kid, never to be seen again. The story ends with Ellie ditching the last thing she has, Joel's guitar, because literally watching not Niel Druckmann spitting on his caved in head wasn't enough.
    If the gameplay were better, or the graphics were prettier, or if story wasn't such a huge focus in every Naughty Dog game since Jak 3, I probably wouldn't care. But you don't play ND games for the gameplay. You play them to watch how events unfold. Niel Druckmann didn't drop the ball here. He stabbed the ball with a penknife, ruining the game for everyone, and then attempted to bribe commentators into saying he made an excellent play.
    But at least the music was good. One full point there.

    unfortunately they managed to kill the game completely. Everything was a complete mess, huge script holes, forced relationships between characters and very hasty deaths, an ending that makes you want to hit the joystick on the wall. They missed the opportunity to make the game one of the best of the new generation, but they blew it, a shame. the metacritic score can be 95, but make no mistake.

I'm still so mad about this I understand it is a good game I admit the gameplay and graphics are amazing but God damn I can't say I like the fact they die... It's just hard seeing Joel die in like the first 2 hours man , I can see that in the long run it wss a vengance story , and it makes it more "realistic" but couldn't they have dóne THE story different ? I don't know instead of the human route , probably a more creepy zombie route were they learn the truth about how it came to be ??… Expand

    1. A way of protesting against the way the trailers lied to the audience. For me, thats not marketing, thats lack of respect for the players who loved this story since The Last of Us.

    2. Because of the choices in the story, i dont care anymore about graphics and gameplay, im even sorry for that, i know im just wrong and angry, but the Zero score will remain there.
    The story felt for me like if Abby was the new protagonist, a sociopat one. And Joel was the villan..
    None of that was necessary, i would say that not even Joels death was necessary in my opinion. A good sequence, for me, would have been a good one just by focusing on the relationship betwen Ellie and Joel, maybe something around the lie that Joel kept from Ellie for so long. I would be already happy.

    Terrible written story. Disregards the story of part 1 which was a complete masterpiece. So many plot holes. No character progression or depth. Nothing enjoyable from start to finish. Not a "10/10" game. Absolutely disappointed and devastated how this game turned out. Would never recommend to buy to play.

    this game is like watching avengers endgame, but just imagine this..
    thanos wiped-out 50% of all living creatures, and he murdered all the avengers in a very horrible way except for thor & thor was watching thanos when he killed all of his friends, so thor goes out for revenge kills everyone standing in his way & finally gets the chance to revenge, but changes his mind at the very last second for wtv reason..
    doesn't make any sense right?
    okay, let's just imagine this..
    you play god of war 3, you play as kratos & the whole game is mainly about you trying to kill zeus, but after playing for hours killing gods & killing all these monsters just to reach zeus, & finally you reach him, you change your mind & you decide it's not worth it..
    this is some bs right?
    they are trying so hard to justify what abby did and show you that she is not a bad person, so they force you to play as her to see her point of view to all of this.
    imo.. making the vaccine should've been ellie's choice but since she was drugged, it was joel's choice, he is the one who traveled half across the country with her, he is the one who protected her & they bonded together, he was like a father to her.
    it wasn't marlene's choice, and sure as hell it wasn't Jerry's *The doc* choice either so both of them can go die or wtv.
    what he did was kinda justified because he was just protecting his "daughter" the only person who cares about in this world & when this doc tried to stop him, joel had no choice but to shoot him.
    so joel is on the right side here not this stupid doc or his daughter.
    on top of that, joel saved abby's life and she kills him anyways & at the ending if it wasn't for ellie, abby would have died there bec she was tied up, basically joel and ellie saved her abby's life TWICE like wtf
    other things that i didn't like is..

    i don't like how they won't lot you choose or do anything, you just keep playing until you reach this stupid ending, like if it was up to me to choose i'd have stayed at the farm & that's almost good ending to me..
    i also don't like how they edited the storyline idk that for sure but "Official Story Trailer" looked different from the final game so yeah..
    i also think that naughty dog is one of the best studios out there, but i don't think i'm going to trust them or buy any games from this studio anymore until they kick "neil druckmann" out & i'm pretty much done with pre-ordering games.

    this game takes about 25 hours to finish it, half of them are wasted because of "locked doors" and trying to find a way in, fighting infected, & trying to find materials, it can be really boring.

    i just finished the game so i'm sorry for any grammar mistakes, english isn't my first langauge so yeah..
    i'm still processing this stupid sad ending can't believe i've waited 4 years for this bs..    … Expand

    -Gameplay is exactly the same as the last game, pretty much nothing change and no, adding a "jump button" doesn't make your game any more enjoyable.
    -Old beloved characters get destoyed for the sake of introducing new ones but they're just impossible to sympathize with.

Usually, when a developer makes a sequel... they do it to continue a well-received franchise and implement upgrades to gameplay / continue the ALREADY BELOVED STORY AND CHARACTERS. This game just seems like a story that derails most of the resemblance to theI've been a Naughty Dog Fan a Long time... so it saddens me to see this disheartening treatment of an established beloved franchise. Usually, when a developer makes a sequel... they do it to continue a well-received franchise and implement upgrades to gameplay / continue the ALREADY BELOVED STORY AND CHARACTERS. On the ps4 fat the game look ok but it look way better on ps4 pro. The gameplay is recycled from the first one and feel outdated and slow compare to other games. Violence that's way over the top. Messages rammed repeatedly down the player's throat. Naughty Dog has done everything to subvert the players' expectation of the sequel but as a result, have created aLoved the first game. Have given up after the first 8-9 hours on the second. They make a poor revision of the original story that made the franchise successful, trying to generate sympathy for their political "causes" by creating a hate story, with script holes just to justify a bad plot.… Expand

I can't believe the enthusiastic critic reviews - Last of Us was not just about the gameplay but also (IMO primarily) the wonderfully crafted story. Part II stomps on the legacy of the Last of Us by killing Joel within its first two hours, barely giving him any attention prior to this raw, sudden death. ND tries to compensate for this through Ellie's flashbacks, only one of which are worth remembering (when he explains the truth of the cure to Ellie), yet even this scene stomps on Last of Us Pt.1 because it was implied she already understood there was no cure. We have to play as Abby, Joel's killer for about 15 hrs. It just doesn't work when you find out she was out for revenge because Joel killed her father, one of the *despicable* Firefly doctors. One ends up having no sympathy for this character whatsoever, hoping that after all of Ellie's killing, she will have no mercy on Abby - but she does. What???     The gameplay hasnt really improved since the first game, which was a big put off for me. Although it would have been fine if the story was strong - which it isnt. For me the story just wasnt anything special, it was just a mediocre revenge story which really did nothing new.

The first game had amazing characters and story. So the expectations were high. Joel is my favorite game character of all time. He could sense trouble coming from a mile away. And he is a survivor. But in this game, he acts out of character, so he dies. Ellie says Joel and Tommy would do anything to survive. But then Joel and Tommy risk their own lives by saving a random girl getting chased by a horde of zombies. Honestly Joel and Tommy would've just left her to die and head back to Jackson. But instead they for some reason saved her. Then told her their names. Then went to a basement in their place. That totally didn't make any sense. And another thing is that, Ellie is not likable at all in this game. She always acts like a jerk to everyone. In the beginning of the game, a character named Seth apologizes and she doesn't even care. And then she acts like a jerk to Joel. And then there is the worst part about this game, the Abby part. The game tries to make us like Abby for some reason. And it doesn't work. I hate Abby. I dont even like Ellie that much anymore but at least she tries to get revenge for Joel. And then she fails, with weapons, against a weaponless Abby. that didn't make any sense either. And then there is the final. The game tries to give a cliche message, "revenge is bad, killing Abby would get me nowhere, I should forgive Joel and Abby" when it didn't need to. All we wanted from this game was, Ellie to kill Abby at that point. But instead, she lets her go. The only thing left from Joel was, playing the guitar. And Abby took that from Ellie too. Killed Joel, killed Jesse, shot Tommy, bit 2 of her fingers, and she still lets her go. Thats just poor writing. And I haven't even talked about the romance scenes the whole game, they are so bad that I dont want to talk about them.… Expand

Naughty dog has had an incredible track record, with amazing titles like the Uncharted series, Crash bandicoot, Jack and Daxter, and the first Last of Us, you'd expect The last of us part 2 to be their next biggest and greatest game. You'd EXPECT it to be. To be frank, the last of us part 2 is a failure on nearly every level. It turns Elie into an insufferable person who has little to no growth. The choices made are next to unbelievable and most of the time just downright stupid. Pointless plot points and a cast of characters that could be replaced with literally anybody else and nothing would be changed, which leads me into the spoilers.
    Let's first get the elephant out of the room first, Joel had no real reason to die. Its the most coincidental meeting in video game history, where Abby just so happens to run into the ONE person she's trying to kill. We're then met with a brutal cutscene where Joel gets shot in the leg, then tortured on screen. Her reasons being that her father was one of the doctors you killed from the last game when you go to the firefly hospital to save elie's life. No seriously thats their justification for abby being in this game. So after were forced to watch Joel get tortured to death and listen to elie scream and say she'll kill every one of them, they make us play as Abby. No im not joking. 10-12 hours of this game is us playing as the character we just watched murder with a golf club one of the main 2 characters of the last game. It gets better though, because at the end of the game, when elie, after killing hundreds of WLF soldiers, gets the chance to kill the one person responsible for joels death, and guess what happens. Elie. Let's. Abby. Go. After everything that she's gone through, all the killing, her killing multiple characters thst are close to elie, she lets her go. I honestly couldn't believe my eyes when I watched this play out. This game fails in every aspect except graphical fidelity and soundtrack, which both sound and look amazing. Everything else about this game is terrible. Mechanics that feel stuck in last gen and hardly feel like an improvement, a cast of characters you never end up caring about, ridiculous choices made by characters, and an abhorrent story. This game gets a 1 from me, which is only because it looks and sounds good, everything else is terrible. This is about as bad as Disney star wars, which i tend to treat the same way, forget its even there and have fun with the older stu    … Expand

    If you consider yourself a "The Last of Us" fan - you should just walk away from this game. Keep on with your life and pretend this abomination never came out. If you loved the plot and story of "The Last of Us" - there was never a sequel.

    A lot of the promotiona footage was altered to make you think you are geting Joel but in reality they ither replaced a character that is actually there in the ingame cutscene or "aged up" Joel and Ellie to make it look like it's not a flashback. In reality Joel get's killed in a completly retarded way cause Niel Druckman wanted to make torture p0rn. The rest of the game is all abaut revenge but in the end we don't even get that cause Ellie decides not to kill the golfer that beat Joel to death cause... revege is bad? This is after she killed a ton of other people in her persuit of revenge but she randomly decides that the one who actually killed Joel can live. I'm suuuure this has nothing to do with the fact that Hulk golfer and "deffinitly not Niel Druckman" **** in the game.

    The "game" parts are good so i guess it's technicly better than COD and whatnot but this story deserves a dedicated "storyless mode".

    Overall, this is a bad movie sequal on a good but not amazing game skeleton.

It used to be a story about finding happiness in a post-apocalyptic setting, and now it's just your run-of-the-mill, poorly written revenge story. Every single event (apart from Joel-Ellie related flashbacks) felt unsatisfying, especially the 2nd part of the game where you're forced to play as one of the new characters, Abby, just to make her seem somewhat lovable. Her story and interactions are so awful it only made me hate her more. How can you be that bad at character development...

    The Last of Us Part 2 is a dumpster fire compared to it's predecessor.

    - Unceremoniously killed off Joel.

    - Dumping a truckload of backstory on Abby and forcing me to play as her doesn't make me feel sorry for her, or forgive her for what she did.

    - Ellie goes on a revenge mission, killing 100+ people on the way to get Abby. Then, out of nowhere, at the absolute last second, she decides, "Actually, killing is bad". And LETS HER GO. Seriously? That's what you came up with? Some pseudo philosophical message about how "Revenge is bad" Yet Abby can get hers and go on her merry way?

    - So much needless violence and edgyness, At times, it's like watching an 15 year old's murder fantasy. I get it, you want to be raw and emotional, but normal people don't act like this.

    On the side note, it's very suspecious how this game got 9/10s and 10/10s by big gaming reviewers, despite universal backlash the day of it's release. How did this garbage get 95 and a "Must Play" award from Metacritic?

But, my god. The last of us 2 ruined it. The story is an epic fail. The graphics are good, the mechanichs are there. But, the story is just horrible. Season 8 of game of thrones is like the godfather compare to this. Joel dies in the first hour of the game (in a really patetic way) Abby, the real main protagonist of the game, killed him with a golf club. Joel, the guy who used to be like a terminator in the first part, goes to an obvious ambush and did nothing. Lame. That was just cheap. After that i really didnt want to play with Abby. Her face is strange also, something is wrong with her design ( she looks like a male bodybuilder) And, in the end, Elie forgives Abby ( after losing two fingers in a Quick time event fight!) I don´t have problems with gay, trans and lesbian comunnity. It has nothing to do with it. This game is just bad. Don`t buy it. Stick with the first part.… Expand

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
