    As a member of the LGBTQ+ Community, launching this game IN PRIDE MONTH with such problematic storytelling is not only insulting, but a slap in the face. Making these characters as unlikable as possible, and completely ignoring the first game and everything that made it a masterpiece. TLOU2    Graphics: Gorgeous. Music: Good.     Fans of the series will not like this game, and "critics" will lambaste you for being homophobic or trans-phobic... well what about us queer folks who think the story is problematic and insulting? Don't have much footing with us, and actually shows how completely out of touch with what gamers really want to play.

    Overall, after my first and probably last playthrough my final verdict is utter story disappointment. Visuals are stunning, so as the sounds. Combat gets extremely tedious, but it has some fun moments i give you this. Story is linear, single ending. I could see multiple stopping points for player to decide like staying with Dina and not chasing after Abby to ruin everything.     Absolutely terrible story and bland repetetive gameplay. I wouldn't recommend anyone who loved the first game to play this travesty. Killing off beloved characters to shock the audience is the laziest writing I've seen in a long while.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played this game as soon as it installed and these are my honest thoughts and opinions as well as critiques.

    The last of us 2 tries to be a post apocalypse story that is diverse and different, however it feels forced and agenda pushing through nearly the entire story, while the game-play feels fluid and combat is more satisfying than the first game, the risk reward is just not there and ruins the game-play experience.

    The story for the last of us 2 leaves you feeling as if the game was never finished, the ending is certainly there but it is a disappointment, in-fact alot of this game disappoints with trailers blatantly LYING about Joel's involvement in the game, some scenes are model switched such as flashbacks in the game being shown in the trailer as present old Joel and Ellie in the ads. Naughty dog/ Sony blatantly lied to people in the games advertising to sell more copies and in the final product there is very little present day interaction with Joel and Ellie.

    Overall, The agenda pushing in this game mixed with the lying of Advertisements for this game ruin the experience for the Last of us fans, While the gameplay is definitely improved and voice acting is superb the story is a massive let down even for people who this game tries to pander to and bleak story lovers.

    I normally would have given this game a 2 or 3 just for the game-play and voice acting alone but with the lies in advertisement and a story so bad that i believe the game should have been scraped and redone from the start story-wise along with agenda politics forced into our video games especially at a time like this when games are used to escape the real world, i had to take points away from what my normal score would have been. i sincerely hope this will be a lesson learned on naughty dogs part and their next games will be better in the future.

    They spent 6 years creating this game, but how much time did they spend writing the story? Two hours? The plot is as bad as the scrapped initial version of fanfic written by a depressed teenager.

    More than the weird feeling you get when the character you learned to love are displaying unfitting behaviors, its the general atmosphere of the game that failed to make feel attached to it.

    Storytelling is such an important part of how a game or a movie touches its audience, yet it seems to have been completely forgotten here. The character writing especially is somehow downgraded exponentially from the first opus, with potent character being written off like they got discarded at a casting, while other "new" empty character got a surprising amount of spotlight (not the good kind of surprise). This resulted in a most of the storylines and quests being meaningless and unexciting. And since this is supposed to be the heart of the game, that why I cannot give it a decent grade.

    I dont even care that the gameplay is just a loop of repetitive similar challenges and situation, for which you get bored after a couple of hours. Thats not even the point.
    The point is that a story telling game got so lost in social virtue that its own soty telling has been killed. I was looking forward for that game so much and end up givin this kind of review only a day after release. This game will stay an example of how incerting politics and social issues into games can destroy good story telling, and divide its fanbase.    … Expand

    The Last of Us Part II could be a pretty good game, but Naughty Dog didn’t give a damn and trample what the players in the first part loved (you lived and empathized with the main characters), and now you don’t understand why this is happening on the screen. Disappointment, resentment, anger - this is what this game will give you.

The personality, the actions, it's as if Ellie had not matured anything and what they did to Joel ... I don't believe it.     I say some version of this in every Naughty Dog review I give, but, STILL, the "adventure" of this action-adventure is still just a tarted-up Crash Bandicoot! Bigger straight paths and more control in the animal riding segments but mostly still true! I think it may actually be a step back, there is less Ellie on a water puzzles but compared to Uncharted 4 the environments seem less story motavated.

    Speaking of story, holy **** from the macro to the micro, shiny as it may look this really is a dog turd. The laughable way it keeps shouting out random names while you kill the same 12 character models over and over again. The super simple and basic revenge story that does nothing new. The horrible pacing that added TEN HOURS instead of just ending the game!

    About halfway in I started to get bored of the gameplay loop and then a few hours later there is a huge change but it only made me go from bored to annoyed to really hating this game.

    The gameplay stays the same throughout but the ludo-narrative dissonance does not so much "take a dive" as Wile-E-Coyote falls down a canyon. The game makes the gore and guns and throat-slitting fun and sound satisfyingly juicy but also wants to try to critique violence? Everything just feels like it is working against everything else and what a mess!

    The gross way they have a trans character and lazily making their entire arc only about being trans. If the rest of the characters were not this shallow I would have been more offended, but luckily(?) everyone is lazily written.

    Ellie gets the worst of it. When you play the first one, narratively you think about how they will deal with the fallout of "Joel's Choice" and how interesting it would be to play a whole game as Ellie. WELL... what you get is another Joel in an Ellie skin and about a minute of a sequel. Instead a very basic hunt these people who wronged you that could have taken Ellie out entirely and only have to change 2 flashbacks!

    3. Gameplay from the last decade. I re-played Resident Evil 4 on Switch before this and didn't get bored once, it's fantastic. I play this afterwards, expecting to be blown away and it was the same gameplay for 35 hours (and much worse than RE4 apart from the camera). Honestly it was painful.

    The storytelling started off immaculately but descended into boredom. There were times during the 35 hours I spent playing (and leaving the controller on too long) where the cutscenes were spectacular but there weren't enough. The characters were just too predictable and boring.

    Naughty Dog have to realise how the first game compares to this game in terms of themes and story. They should also look at the User Scores over the Critic Scores. You blew it.    … Expand

Although there are many reviews claiming that they don't even care about the SJW nonsense and their negative take is actually based on the fact that naughty dog destroyed character and created a terrible story, however, these two points are completely mutually inclusive in this case, the character was destroyed and the story was of poor quality BECAUSE OF the politics, not in spite of them of apart from them. Killing a main character in this case is SJW politics, as it serves to advance and support the SJW agenda, these points cannot logically be separated. In this particular case, you can not say you are not concerned about the SJW politics but you are concerned in the disrespect of character as the disrespect of character is because of SJW politics. The game looks amazing and the sound are phenomenal but i think that the main of this saga is the story and the characters and those parts of the game are totally ruined. If you kill one of the most beloved characters in the saga, early in the game and want to bring in another character to replace him, you have to give a story to them.… Expand

The first part was excellent, the second completely opposite. Very boring, not worth the money! Hardly barely half passed, already pulling puke.

    Huge fan of the first game. Extremely disappointed with this sequel mainly because of the terrible story. The writing is a complete insult to its fans from the original game. Returned my copy of The Last of Us 2 to Gamestop and was fortunate to get my money back.

    So let's get down to bussiness - aside from few annoying bugs, there is one glaring problem with this game. Story. The writing.
    THE ONE MAIN THING, that made TLOU 1 game of the generation.
    Writing in TLOU 2 is just bad. And I'm not talking about things people were "shocked" in spoilers and leaks. It's bad - yeah, THAT bad or even worse, because there is lot more sh*tting on game we all loved, than spoilers shown. But I mean also a writing all along the way is bearly ok. You can just feel, that people who crafted TLOU 1 with love ain't working on this one. It's like this game was written by someone with inferiority complex, who hated their predecesors and wanned to hurt them, by destroing their legacy.
    And people jump the wagon of hate because of minority depiction and so on. I don't care if Abby is trans or not, as well as I don't care if Ellie is gay or not. What I do care is poor writing choices, that forces you to do cruel things, just to imidietly scold you for it. It's seems like it was written by someone, whos biggest writing achivement up to date, was writing imaginary arguments with people who he didn't like, and winning with poor artificial arguments. Smartest things this game have to offer is "killing is bad", "revange is wrong". No shait Sherlock. You just killed hundreds to spew that idiotiy...
    In the end, I belive this game is biggest miss in Sonys history, worst game that Naughty Dog ever made. It really is as people call it - 8th season of GoT or Last Jedi of the franchise.
    It's a show of one poor actor that injected himself into the game (at least twice!), to show to whole world, that he have mental issues. And he do! But to be honest - he needs help, real help. Insted, someone gave him few million $ brand, to jugle with his own mental problems.
    To sum it up - if you like TLOU 1 = AVOID like a plague.

    This game is not worthy of a 95, not even close. In fact in almost every regard it's inferior to the original that's 7 years old. Naughty dog clearly has philosophy for this game make it as sappy and emotional as possible to draw a reaction but take a back seat and look how cheap the story (and game play) really is.

NOTHING good comes of it as it will ultimately never represent the majority(while never fully satisfying the moniroty its designed to appease) so you are alienating a vast core audience and all the while treating these beloved characters like dirt. Its not rocket science. This is a bait and switch series where they gave us a perfect tale in the first game only to use the sequel to try and sneak in a social justice success story...and it wont work. Other downsides are underdeveloped, unlikeable characters, awful pacing especially towards the end, map size thats big just for the sake of it losing the focus and pacing of the first game. I could go on but even writing about this failure of a game is a chore. Very poor naughty dog...so very poor. Amy hennig must be laughing at this and its taught a lot of people that mainstream game journo's/sites are nothing but mouthpices for large publishers/devs and simply cannot be taken seriously(if that wasnt already clear long before now).… Expand

It's a Druckman troll job against people who enjoyed the first game. I don't know what it is with SJW's and their never ending determination to destroy rather than create, but this game is a constant in-your-face progressive propaganda fairy tale that spits on everything that made the first game a success. I can't understand the crude characters, where no one is even likable, and where certain actions contradict what we knew about the established characters. A very explicit adult scene is something I can't understand how Sony allowed in the first place. This game didn't need to exist and it's fair to compare it to lower quality works such as The Last Jedi and season 8 of Game of Thrones. What a missed opportunity, by what was once a beloved game studio, Naughty Dog, to create something Sony's consumers would be willing to elevate above all other games of this generation. Now on this one, technically speaking, this game looks awesome, but TLOS was never about the graphic details and was always about the story. I understand that ND tried to portrait the neverending cycle of violence when someone pushes that violence on others (Joel and Ellie on many NPCs on the first game). But you (ND) have to understand that it was inevitable that I, as a gamer created bonds with these characters. You simply cannot get to kill Joel on TLOU2 with all that gore and get away with that. Also, it was totally unnecessary the push of a social agenda thru all of this. I'm deeply disappointed.… Expand

    First of all i want too talk about gameplay and UI here. This game has been in development for 7 years. And the first game started development in 2009. and they both have the same gameplay, looting is not new and fresh, and crafting and upgrades are done incredible bad. you are basicly nerfed as a character and then you get back too your "normal" after you are done upgrading. and this takes btw 2 playthroughs. and if you use a guide for collectibles you have the platinum after 2 playthroughs. soo IMO the game is then done. and you play this boring nerfed gameplay through that. looting and crafting are the same. even though they sayd they made it better. and thats complete BS. Soo the fact this game is basicly the same experience as something that was in the making 11 years ago is dumb. UI does not look or feel any better.

    Story:
    For me the story is the worst i have played in a AAA game.
    the problem is not that Joel Dies, or how he dies.
    The problem for me is when and how the rest of the game plays out.
    The flashback missions are supose too trigger a feeling. but it does not.
    Lets say the would have cut the camera before joel dies. do all the flashback missions. then go into killing joel. you have then built up all the relationship with joel and ellie for then joel too die. and then you do the revenge missions. all of the story would have made soo much more sense. now when you do the flashbacks joel is already dead. and they are soo poorly done because they dont give the reaction that it should because of the order they where put in.
    Now because this game does not have any other gameplay then story. and that story are fixed through cutscenes. the entire weight is in the story.
    if i would have given this game a score based on graphics its like a 810
    gameplay is good but not when you look at what they should have evolved for the first game.
    and story gives this 010 because nothing makes sense. and ellie does not get revennge.
    I therefor give this game a 110 because story is what matter in this game. without it. it does not add up to a good game made for a 2020 release.    … Expand

All opinions which are not complimentary to this game are blamed and humiliated without consideration. Meanwhile mass-media hype and ratings are ridiculous. Seriously - calling TLOU2 right after it came out not even the "best game of the year" but "best game ever" stinks. Even when The Witcher 3 came out in May 2015 very few dare to call it "game of the year" until other games published in 2015. Only time proved greatness of TW3. And to call something as boring and silly as TLOU2 "the game of the year" same yer when Cyberpunk is expected and probably sequel to the BOTW? How biased and out of touch with reality those "critics" should have been to make such statements? How their opinion can be trusted or even taken seriously? So in addition to forced unpleasant choices, dumb story, unlikable characters, short and boring gameplay TLOU2 through biased media reviews forces gamers to share developers opinion and political agenda. Buying this game is like buying slave master who'll turn you into obedient slave and will make you suffer. I suggest some gamers are prone to masochism but generally people wouldn't pay for their own enslaving and suffering. So if you are not masochist and not dreaming about sponsoring some rich and arrogant slave master don't buy TLOU2 and demand refund if you was tricked to buy it.… Expand

    I had huge expectations for this game and they RUINED IT !!! How tf does this get a 94 ??? It’s trash! Do NOT waste your money better yet don’t support naughty dog for this pile of crap. Everything they made the first game to feel so special they throw out wtf were they thinking !!?

The amount of 10's from the media this game received is a testament to the disconnect between journalists and the general public. Metacritic will probably scrape all 0's so I recommend you give it at least a 1/10. It is so sad that this game will probably end up winning GOTY.… Expand

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
