The story is awfull and in some point i was forced to do things i hated to do.

Once you know the story and do a replay, you'll get bored really quickly. There are so many QTEs and given directions, you don't feel like playing the game at all. It's like watching a movie with some minigames in the pauses between the cutscenes.
Graphics are pretty, but nothing we haven't seen before, for example in Uncharted 4, gameplay is ok-ish, but with a heavy focus on grinding.

It was like watching a movie that I was forced to watch, the person that made me watch the movie really loves it, and wants you to too, but you feel bad telling them if was terrible. Since this is a story game and the whole gameplay is built around the story, we can say for sure that this is a failure. The narrative is poorly structured. The motivation of some of the characters looks contrived and inadequate as well as their actions. At the end of the game, you have a feeling of wasted time. The gameplay has not changed since part 1. He got better, but nothing more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where do I begin with this game. This has to be the most disappointing and frustrating game i've ever played. I remember watching Pewds play the 1st one because I couldn't afford a ps3 back in the day.
I experienced the game for myself a month before last of us 2 came out and it became my third favorite game of all time. Experiencing the characters and they're development, the music, the gameplay and more for myself really got me hyped for the sequel. Then i played last of us 2, what a trainwreck. Ellie is a mindless killer who doesn't care about anyone but herself. She treats Joel like **** the whole game and Joel gets killed just for shock value. Then we have to play as her killer for half the goddamn game when I WANTED nothing more than to see her DIE. Little to no innovation in the game, A.i are retarded for the most part until they see you and your a.i companions are garbage. They're 10 times worse than in the first one. Then during the flashback when joel tells ellie what really happened he doesn't explain himself well AT ALL. They make Joel look like the bad guy through the whole game and make him and Tommy retarded, leading to Joel's death. Then the ending was the worst thing i've ever seen after all the people ellie killed, after killing joel her father figure what does she do to the one person who did 99% of the killing. SHE LETS HER GO, LIKE WHAT!?!? Ellie is left broken and she cant play guitar anymore, Tommy is crippled and divorced, and Joel is dead making Sarah's death meaningless. And the one who killed the main character of the first game gets EVERYTHING SHE WANTS revenge and a friend to continue to survive with. But revenge is bad for ellie but good for abby. what a ****ty story. Please don't waste your money on this piece of **** The graphics, the flashbacks with joel and ellie, and the music literally save this game from being a 0!!!! The worst ps exclusive of the generation and easily the most disappointing. i don't want to make this longer than it already is but these were the main points i wanted to hit.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is unfortunate that the production team chose a path to such a mediocre story. They could have played an epic game, with Joel and Ellie in a more mature relationship, who knows until his death, but in a dignified way, like a warrior he was, and not with a simple coadjuvant. They could have written an intelligent, captivating script as in the first game, but they preferred to try to break the expectation, and the result was total rubbish. If the graphic design was not so beautiful, this game would be a total failure, honestly, I would like to get my money back. Expand

I loved all the characters, even the ones that we didn't get to know too much about before they left the narrative, or died. This game has done everything in reverse. They may have created a beautiful game with more enemies and characters and mechanics, but the story is ridiculous and contradictory, and not in any intelligent or progressive way; the characters are bland and I cant find myself caring about any of them, as there is no reason to, especially since they die and no one cares, including myself. I could go on and on about how they butchered Joel, Ellie, Tommy, and the idea of overarching villains, but there isn't really any reason at this point in time due to the attention that the game has received in correspondence with the horrible choices the creators made. I bought the game to see for myself whether the game was as bad as people were claiming cause I had faith that Naughty Dog was better than all the other game companies like Blizzard, Ubisoft, etc, but I was wrong, and altough I know now for sure for myself I also can justify the 60$ I spent on this game at all. I preferred the mess of the Left Behind dlc to this cause at least I actually liked Riley and her relationship with Ellie. All I can say for Dina is that she is pretty, her personality is nonexistent and her "chemistry" with Ellie is presumed by the creators as if that's how friendships/romances work. Side note: The guitar scene with dina and Take Me On went on for way too long, and I feel that it sums the game up perfectly. The dev's try to force emotions onto the player but it comes off fake, awkward, and empty. Also, Abby. Expand

One of the best games visually. Actors have done a great job considering the weak storytelling. The gameplay is almost identical to the original and it feels like you are playing a fine tuned version of the original. Unfortunately the warm story beats of the TLU is no where to be found. Its dark for the sake of dark, and tries so hard to be woke. But in the end result is mediocre at best.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The previous game was a good journey with a solid gameplay and visual experience; the focus wasn't really the storyline, but its narration and the empathy that you develop towards Ellie and Joel.
This game basically match the expectation with the gameplay (pretty much like the previous one) and the visual (top notch as 2020), however it failes when it comes to narration, plot and characters.

In this game you play with Ellie in the first half, and another character for a little bit, until you have to play as Ellie again.

In the first half of the game you experience scenes that allow you to understand Ellie a little better, expecially with Joel and another girl (Ellie is lesbian). Unfortunaly only the scenes with Joel are well done, and the session in the natural science museum can easily be marked as the best thing you'll experience in this game. Her relation with the other girl can described without spoiler as meaningless because it's never been properly developed for various reasons. When finally the two are together Ellie decide to leave her for her last journey towards the end of the game as a proof the Ellie-Joel bond was simply better story wise and the girl relation wasn't a big deal.

In the other character experience there's not much to talk about. You're going to experience the story from a different point of view and it takes a while to understand the motivation of the new character.

The game ends with Ellie who leave the girl she supposed to love, and starts a journey that probably will takes months or so to hunt down the other character you played with.
It's really difficult to understand why they invest to much in the romance just to ditch it away in the end, why Ellie starts a journey to find another girl that as far as she know may well be dead (or may die during her hunt). It's even harder to understand the ending scene, knowing that no previous hints were shown to comprehend the sudden change in motivations that Ellie.
The whole ending scenes feel bad because a lot a things happen during this journey and none of them allow the player to understand the final choice of Ellie, leaving the player with the uncomfortable sensation that the devs focus too much on side contents narration and invest so few in the meaningful storyline.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I consider this game a failure of Neil Drakman. The game is stuffy, drawn out and stupid in the setting of the plot. For me, the game ended at the point where we said goodbye to Joel. That's what kept the games going. It is he who is first remembered by all the players. His character, reticence, and decisions generally influenced how he became and how he was remembered. But in the second part of such memorable characters were. What did we trade Joel for? On the pumped-up, slightly stupid Abby, who betrayed all her close friends, in order to save unfamiliar characters. Or Allie, who suffers from bipolar disorder? Her opinion changes like a weather vane.
If I had been in Joel's shoes at the end of the original The Last of Us, I would have accepted Ellie's surgery without a second thought.
Dina was brought into the game to...
    To have it!
Remove it from the game, an insignificant part of the story will disappear.
The game itself cannot be an independent product. It is based on the success of the first part.
The Last of Us should have been left without a sequel. I feel sorry for the money I gave for the game.

I am ready to praise the technical component of the game. I didn't think that from an old PS4 you can pull such a beautiful picture.

The game doesn't deserve more than the score.

However, when you have a team who have pumped out amazing games before it, each with its own brilliant plot line and interactions, and then this festering turd is served up, it leaves a sour taste in the players mouth.

    Pros:

    - Graphics are beautiful, Naughty Dog show their true strengths in creating an amazing and unique environment
    - The story starts off strong
    - Little details help keep the player immersed in the world

    Cons:

    - Whatever strength the start of the game creates is immediately destroyed, not by the death of a beloved character, but by the introduction of a character which the player is forced to relate to
    - Poor writing unfortunately creates many plot holes which leaves players wondering just how on earth they all slipped past the whole team
    - Bugs. Oh my lord the bugs, I don't know whether I personally was unlucky to find so many bugs or if the game was filled to the brim with them but the amount of times the game decides to become a mess was laughable
    - Poor character development. A bunch of nobodies which no one cares about, an awkward sex scene which I'm unsure as to why it was included? (unless it's a main plot device, there's no point in having a scene in a game like that, keep it in your pants developers) and the poor treatment of both protagonists
    - She hulk. This is more of a personal thing and as such won't affect the rating, but christ. I have done my fair share of bodybuilding and if I could have She Hulks muscles by surviving off of scraps of food and probably no protein shakes, I'd be cutting down on supps. Granted she is made skinnier after certain events, but during an apocalypse, every one would be lean as hell unless they had access to Willy Wonkas chocolate factory.

Conclusion A game many of us have waited for us since the brilliant end of tlou's dlc has been a massive letdown. I'll hold on hope for some phenomenal dlc but the vanilla game? No thanks, I'll stick to stabbing myself with a knife, it's less painful.

Flashbacks were a lazy attempt to create character development and the only way to spend time with the characters you actually wanted to see in this game. At the end I wanted to have more time to play as Ellie and friends instead of the other character which was not likeable or relatable at all. It was frustrating and disappointing as a player. The story is very linear and the player doesn't have an input at all.
Gameplay was not great either, some of the mechanics first introduced were quickly forgotten and left out, and the action felt forced and not an important part of the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been a console gamer all my life. And when I play any game, my mom doesn't care what is on the TV. Then I played The Last of Us. Funny thing happened, my mom, after watching the intro (which was THE BEST INTRO EVER) stuck around the TV. And I noticed that everytime I play it, she sat down and watched. She was interested! For the first time ever! I was so happy that we connected on a video game even just once. It was special. When the credits rolled, She was asking is there a part 2? I said "maybe". The look on her face, I will never forget. Then TLOU2 was announced! Told my mom and she said "wow. I wanna see it!". My mom died 2019. So devastating.

Picked up TLOU2 on release day after avoiding all the spoilers. Bittersweet since I can't show her anymore. But I was looking forward to playing it. Revisiting my memory of my mom while playing. Maybe imagining she was still watching with me. She was excited for it after all.

Then the first hours of the game happened, doesn't make sense. Then the game ended with Ellie losing everything. . My mom loved these characeters. They were disrespected, and now half of the game I play as the person that destroyed the one video game my mom and I got connected to? I finished it and was glad my mom didn't see it. She would have been disappointed. Thanks Naughty Dog.

Honestly don't waste your time, if you haven't picked up the game by now don't bother.

The only thing that saves this game, is the gameplay and graphics.
If you like to play games to see good stories, DON'T PLAY THIS THING (not even game), because this is a mediocre and superficial history, with bad character writting and they force you to like some horrible people (I'm talking about the stupid muscular monster).
And the characters of the first game doesn't exist in this.

This is my honest score after playing to the point where it lost my interest due to the narrative direction towards characters I didn’t really care about. There are moments where I smiled and enjoyed but these were fleeting moments and the game drags you back to the dreaded main story. Gameplay mechanics saw a slightly improvement with a dodge move and some stealth options. Still wishing I never bought this at full price tag, this game doesn’t deserve your attention and money. Story is where the complete mess is, illogical and abrasive. Some might say torturous. I found it to be very unpleasant and a waste of time. Story is a 1 out of 10. So that brings the overall score to a 4. But I’m giving it a 2 because it should have been another AAA title in my collection. It’s like a toxic relationship that you regret and wonder why you spent any time in it at all.
For a much better written review, search for Vice's Zacny last of us 2 and you will find a spot on review that really breaks down this game. And I am not a fan of Vice at all. I only found out about the Vice review because I saw that Sony contacted him about his review, which isn’t a good look. And that’s coming from someone whose favorite console is PlayStation. That doesn’t foster an environment that encourages honest reviews, criticism, or discussions about games. I will probably never buy a Naughty Dog game again.

TLOU2 visually was great but the story is what really drove me off the edge... unfortunately it didn't deliver and hopefully they can fix it down the line maybe. 2/10 and that hurts for me to rate this low but it is what it is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's hard to really call a game bad when from a gameplay perspective it's so good.

But I think sometimes, the content of a game (or any intillectual property for that matter) is so bad and so departed from what made its original source material so damn good, that it renders any good left in it's content absolutely meaningless.

And from a gameplay aspect, whats here IS good! it's great. I genuinelly think that the gameplay is some of the best I've ever played in an action adventure game, it's gritty, impactfull, tactile, responsive, deep and isn't bogged down or unintuitive. Just a fluid, raw, adreneline soaked good old time. Truely, a genre defining console selling experience. I literally BOUGHT a playstation just to play the last of us 1 and 2 has even BETTER gameplay. So that will tell you how great the gameplay in this game actually is. Almost perfection.

Now you've got to ask yourself, if the gameplay is THAT good, how bad does the narrative of this game have to actually be to warrant such a poor rating?

It's because the original was a story about two broken people learning to love and trust again that form a father/daughter bond. I'm not exagerating when i say that it was one of the best performances in the entertainment industry Iv'e ever seen and i literally fell in love with those charecters, as did most people who played the original. Truely an iconic performance and a masterwork crafted that everyone involved should be beaming with pride about.

Which is why when certain things happen in this game which i won't mention for spoilers, makes me legitimately angry. Which by it's self is fine, i mean look at the games setting, death is an occurance and a very real risk, I love game of thrones, death happens in that all the time to beloved charecters, it can be a powerful thing to subvert an expectation or to remind your player/viewer that this is a gritty realistic world where anyone can die and genuinely makes you fear for your favourite charecters lives when they are in a sticky situation. It's not the death of a charecter that has made me think that this is a bad game narratively. It's the way in which it was done and the reasons WHY it was done.

Let's analyse these issues I have with it.

    1) The way in which a beloved charecter dies in this makes no sense as it happens due to the charecter acting and doing things that are out of charecter for the individual. This is bad as it shows that at naughty dog, the very fibre of a fictional charecters moral compass, drives, intelligence, thoughts and desires (all things that are the building blocks and foundation of a charecter) can be ignored and swept under the rug, just to shoe horn in their death. Thats bad writing. A death is an easy way to illicit an emotional response when the charecter is beloved and if an emotional response was the goal, it was achieved, but not without sacrificing the suspension of disbelief and not without raising inumerable questions of the decisions the charecter made prior to the death as to wether or not it would actually unfold the way it did. Bad writing, end of story. Didn't understand the charecter, or didn't care to even portray or write the charecter properly. Furthermore it shows disrespect towards
the audiance as we are expected to swallow it blindly without thought and without analysing it or spotting plot holes in it. Your audience is intelligent naughtydog, don't insult us.

2)Naughtydog playtest the narratives of their stories, in the prequal to this game they tested it and found that the death of ellie at the end (as it was originally) did not sit well with the test groups, so they changed it. This shows that the writers and decision makers at the time were able to sort the wheat from the chaff with feedback from test groups and could make intelligent, informed decisions
about what was not working narratively in their product and change it for the. The way in which they did this was so effective that I literally cannot pick out or think of a single fault in the originals narrative, it's almost perfect. As were a lot of naughty dogs games. So we know that naughtydog have the means and ability to do this, or at least they DID. With tlou2 they either didn't test it or they ignored the responses of the test groups or they allowed bias to dictate who those groups consisted of to illicit a biased response from test groups to echo chamber themselves.

3)The death was redundant narratively, any charecter could have been developed to have their death serve as a hook for the plot of this game, more than enough time passes by the time of the death and the charecter literally appears out of nowhere to fullfill this purpose.

Games are art, this isn't a game, it's propaganda riding on it's scions coat tails, it's existence is an insult and a stain on the careers of everyone involved. get this garbage away from me. This isn't art.

Just because a story is "realistic" doesn't make it a good story. And creating a character that most players would obviously hate (no matter how justified her actions) and then forcing you to play half of the game with that character is not my idea of a fun game. But if you're like me, having at least a slight desire to enjoy a well-crafted story, then TLOU2 failed miserably on this aspect. I’m fine with the so-called traumatic incident that happened, so my distaste isn’t due to that—it’s just that the pacing sucks and it’s all about running around scared and with the occasional stealth kills of the first game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The original game was one of the best games I ever played, the story was great and the two main characters, Joel and Ellie, were the main reason I liked the game so much. Just completed the Part II, totally disappointed!

The story was bad, and the characters you loved in the original were ruined or destroyed. The worst part was that you were forced to play Abby who brutally murdered Joel so that you may like her and won't feel bad when Ellie let her live in their final fight.

In the original game, that damned doctor was trying to kill Ellie to make a so-called vaccine, but when the fireflies woman asked him "will you do it if she is your daughter?", he simply could not answer the question, apparently he can sacrifice other innocent people but not his daughter. So what is wrong with Joel when he killed the doctor to save Ellie who he cared about so much by the end of their journey after losing his own daughter at the beginning of the story? The game creator created a revenge theme in the sequel, it's a shame on you trying to un-justify Ellie's revenge while trying to justify the other.

This game also tried hard to tarnish the relationship between Joel and Ellie built and developed in the original game. Why did Ellie hate Joel so much in this game? Was it because Joel saved her and prevented her from being made a vaccine to save the humanity? Give me a break, that's so ridiculous! The game even let Ellie lost two fingers, so she could no longer play the guitar Joel gave to her and left it behind at the end of the game, what a joke!

I like the experience of the game the graphics and the mechanics are amazing but unfortunately is was not possible to enioy the game for the terrible history that they offer. I do no care if some characters died but they simply are no justify. Beside the parts that i take control of Abby were a complete nightmare. Expand

This game is a great example of bad story telling at it's finest, just because you watch a few episodes of the walking dead doesn't mean you can write the perfect story. I don't care about what anyone says about the story at the end of the day it's lack luster and a very hypocritical one that has been done half a million times.

The Graphics are flawless and the sound design is amazing, it's too bad its meshed in with the story holding it all back.

If you want a better game to play with a better story I would recommend Nioh 2, Ghost of Tsushima and Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Don't waste your time and money like I did.

This game is cursed. I can't even say how I feel about this game without somthing annoying happening with my phone, or the internet, or the layout of this editorial making me screw up everything. So whatever. Most disappointing sequel I have ever played. The user score tells all. The youtube videos tell all. The people are disgustied by this game.

I wanted to like this game. I read all the negative reviews and heard all the bad PR. I stayed away for awhile until on sale. Now after playing I regret my decision to try it. The way they connected Joel and Abby's story was lazy writing and too convenient. I hated playing as Abby and found it broke any connection to the other main characters. They took a story about survival and making sense of how to start again and dumbed it down to a revenge story. A lot of pieces throughout are unncessary like all the drug references, the weed lair and the unneccesary sex scene which i skipped - they were gratuitous on all the wrong things. Terribly missed opportunity. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into this game with an open mind, but with each hour I played my review kept going down. To start with the biggest positive, the graphics were beautiful. They were probably the only thing that got me through the entire game. It's not often I stop in a game just to appreciate graphics. The lighting, the characters, the scenery, everything was great. What baffles me the most is why they chose to do this story with this game. The idea of following two protagonists who are the antagonistics to each other is a really interesting concept. It's been done before in some medias and it can be done really well. This was not the game to do that with, this really should've been its own game. We the audience already have a bond with Joel and Ellie, Abbey was a not a character we knew anything about. They don't introduce anything likable in this new character until half way into the game. It doesn't feel genuine when we start playing as her, as soon as I started playing as Abbey I knew exactly what they were doing. It's borderline emotional manipulation and it annoyed me beyond being able to like Abbey. Abbey is introduced in probably the worst way imaginable. Joel saves her life, and she still chooses to torture him. There is no initial quality about her to like. She doesn't have a moment were she feels conflicted in killing him because he saved her life but he also killed her father. She doesn't think "Maybe I'll just kill you instead of torture you since you saved me". She's introduced as a sadistic person and we don't even learn her motivation for why she's doing this until far later into the game. Her motivation should've been introduced here. She should've had a dialouge with Joel. I'm not against the fact they killed Joel, but it was painful to watch him die the way he did. No one enjoys watching their protagonist get tortured to death. There's a right way and a wrong way to kill beloved characters, and this was the wrong way. Had Abbey shot him rather then beat his brains in, I would'nt have been so depressed after that scene and I wouldn't have hated Abbey as much. I know Naughty Dog games are designed in a linear style, and I like that about them. This game felt like it should've had options though. There were so many things the characters did that annoyed me, it reached a point I felt disconnected with their decisions and kept thinking "Well I didn't do that, the game did". I don't expect perfect characters who make the decisions I would make, but these characters just weren't likable to me. Some of them were okay, but there weren't any characters I felt attached to. Last of us 2 should not have gotten a sequel. This game should've been its own game with characters we didn't have prior emotional attachment to. If Abbey and Ellies storylines flipped back and forth rather than be sectioned off in the first half and the second half I think the game would've flowed a lot better. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
