Graphically stunning, amazing sound design, perfected gameplay, and mechanics.
Divisive as it is, the story is there as a story told by the studio, and not just fulfilling the fans' fantasies.
The somewhat different settings manages to pay respect to the original game, and bring new and refreshing additions to the world of The Last of Us.

Most of the user reviews are from liars who didn't actually play the game and want to deprive you of an undoubtedly memorable experience unlike any other video game that's come before. This game is actually fantastic and has been review bombed by entitled brats who think they are owed something. In actuality, this story is deeply nuanced and thematically complex and studies characters from unexpected perspectives that challenge and move you. The gameplay is fast paced and exciting. You are given a wide variety of tools to engage enemies in a multitude of visceral ways, keeping the combat consistently fresh and engaging. Areas and combat encounters are wide with lots of space and potential routes toward progression that make repeat playthroughs distinctively different. Not to mention the unprecedented level of difficulty customisation. The visuals are stunning and the atmosphere is unquestionably "The Last of Us." Ignore the entitled children who cry bad writing, for they fail to look beneath the surface and explore the rich depth woven into the gripping and compelling narrative Expand

Joel flashbacks and Ellie and Dina relationship is the only good thing about this game. It has a bad ending wit a poor message and boring characters, it tries too hard to extract some empathy from the player, and in my case it fails miserably.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us 2 is a visually stunning and exciting game that could have been a straight 10/10 if not for the writers sacrificing a solid plot for the sake of a forced LGBT narrative. And I think this is quite poorly integrated and so detracts from the flow that was created in the first game. My annoyance at story elements in the game was such that I was inclined to want to score it 0, but while Joel is disappointingly killed early on, his and Ellie’s story is continued through flashbacks which are poignant. If they wanted to create an LGBT narrative it may have worked well in a subsequent title, but largely throwing the Joel and Ellie narrative in the bin in favour of new characters who we are set up to despise from the outset was a poor creative choice by Naughty Dog. It’s comparable to killing Daniel Larusso or Rocky off in the sequels to their classic movies and expecting us to enjoy watching the rest when it’s about characters that killed our heroes - it would make no sense and would kill all hope and desire for subsequent instalments.

In terms of scoring this, I gave 5/5 for the graphics, game mechanics, and level design. For the story I give it 2/5 since it’s like a heavily diluted version of that which I eagerly anticipated and expected. Still, the devs made an extraordinary amount of money from this game and so perhaps they don’t mind having thrown their credibility in the toilet. I will not be watching the upcoming series nor playing any more games from this company.

Oh well. The first game was great.

This game has gotten such an incredible amount of hate because people saw spoilers ahead of time and decided they hated the game from that moment. There is NO game that deserves a 0/10.. even if you didn’t like the story you should rate the gameplay. If you understand the story and can understand what they trying to convey with these characters, this game truthfully is a 10/10. They gameplay is immaculate and is full of the most realistic violence you’ve ever seen in a game. The story is so gut wrenching and heartbreaking, but it was the story that needed to be told. I respect the hell out of Naughty Dog for this game, they stepped out of their norm and took a risk. They didn’t just give the fans the same thing from the first one, they gave us the story that we needed. Believe me when I say this IS a masterpiece, regardless of what the haters say. Expand

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "The Last of Us" was the closest we will get to playing Cormac McCarthy's "The Road". It was an absolutely stunning game that elevated the medium in nearly every conceivable way. There was no need for a sequel as the narrative ended on such a poignant moment of universal insight and reflection, that to attempt a sequel would risk destroying that prior accomplishment.

Naughty Dog went ahead and developed a sequel regardless. While Part 1 was "The Road", Part II is The Last of Us by way of "Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West". It stands as the single most unrelenting nihilistic narrative I've ever experienced, and will likely ever experience, in the medium. The game will not please everyone, but the first title didn't offer a traditionally satisfying narrative either. The developers seemingly wallow in misery, but do so with a clear purpose. Many other reviewers here have marked the title down (some illegitimate, far fewer who have actually played the game to completion) because of the punches this game refuses to pull. They are experiencing the stages of grief. Their reviews exist as funeral pyres for fictitious characters they thought deserved better. I don't disagree that some of these characters deserved better. I would have liked to believe that there was light in the darkness. That's not the narrative that is being told here. It hurts.

This is not the game many people wanted to play. Neil Druckmann has crafted a fetid existential wasteland of the soul. This does not mean this is a bad game. It's truly a remarkable accomplishment on every front. While I was one of the people who did not want a sequel to Part I, now that we have Part II, I would adore a Part III, if for no other reason than to hold out hope that "it can't be for nothing."

    1) Ellie's ark- NOTHING GOOD EVER HAPPENS TO THIS BELOVED CHARACTER in this game, literally nothing. Even the "moments of levity" in the game felt forced from Ellie's perspective(Dina was the one getting everything she wanted). She loses everything she loved and gains nothing she wanted, not even a single thing... 2) messy plot/story- the story is messy and stupid. If they had made us play as Abby first and then Ellie it would have been much better and interesting but that's not what happens...
    3) meh gameplay-.........

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No doubt in my mind that it’s the greatest game I’ve ever played. From the story to gameplay it’s absolutely a 10 out of 10 and I would recommend it to anyone that hasn’t played the game yet. One of my favorite things about the game was the guitar, it had a very symbolic meaning behind it and it was beautiful. In my honest opinion, you have to think quite hard to understand the entire storyline from beginning to end and the meaning behind the game to understand why what happened, happened.

You might not understand why Abby wasn’t killed at the end so I’ll try to explain it the way I interpreted it.

The game was advertised as a revenge story right? So you would think Abby should’ve died but she didn’t. Why? Because they got out of an endless cycle of revenge. How did they get out of the endless cycle of revenge? - An uncommon, socially unaccepted choice they made creates a family bond of love which gives them both a chance of redemption. Ellie has accepted JJ, a child who was not born yet by Dina who kissed Ellie when she knew she was pregnant and started a relationship. Ellie had to face the humiliation that she left Dina once to go on revenge (the part where Jesse and Ellie split up, I'm sure you understand what I'm talking about). Abby accepted Lev, a kid from a cult she hated and is most skilled at killing who saved her. Abby had to face the humiliation and regret of killing Joel cowardly to accept Lev. What did they have to pay? Ellie paid a part of herself, her two fingers were lost during the last battle and she couldn't play the guitar properly anymore. Her guitar holds her dearest memories of Joel, and Joel's song sounds broken without her two fingers, she lost a part of herself physically and symbolically. Abby paid her whole group of friends and trusted comrades. Now that is the true moral argument of the story: revenge will not lead to anything good but it's inevitable. Empathy and sympathy seems impossible to be established but at some point you will have to show some, do it for the ones you love, they're hurt if you're trapped in that cycle too. It felt like the consequences of chasing revenge at all costs was the lesson being taught to Ellie, not the player. I actually think that whole plot element is enhanced by the dramatic irony that the player can see a mile away the road she's on. The player is meant to learn empathy and perspective, through learning that Abby has understandable reasons for doing what she does as well, even if they aren't moral from an absolute perspective. Morally reprehensible or even downright monstrous actions can seem justified, depending on your perspective.

There are a some valid criticisms to be made. I will generally concede on pacing issues or how combat frequently felt more like a disruption of the story. But alas, I don't place much stock in that. The game is beautiful and detailed. The mechanics are polished. The story is powerful and bold. I'm playing a second time, and I am so in awe of this game.

That boldness of the story is something I love. Naughty Dog did not play it safe. I'll choose to avoid spoilers in my review, but they made narrative decisions that they knew would be divisive. They told a complex and emotionally challenging story. It asks a lot of the players to engage in this story and feel the feelings it provokes. It's dark, miserable, and traumatic in all the best ways.

Unfortunately when some scenes of certain moments leaked without context it took away Naughty Dog's ability to control of the experience of those who saw them. While they expected some backlash from fans who played it, the backlash we have now is exacerbated and intensified by the months of stewing after spoilers before the release of the game. There are a large percentage of reviewers determined to hate and nitpick at any perceived fault. Don't let them persuade you. The game is masterfully executed and intentionally made. It may not be a story you like depending on your personal taste, but there is no denying it is art done well.

Play for yourself. Come with an open mind and willingness to let the game tell the story it has to tell.

    SPOILERS AHEAD!
First of all Abigail was created by the traumatic experiences when random guy called Joel murdered her dad and all of the firefly staff. She had her revenge and CLEARLY warned Ellie a couple of times that if they meet again Abby will kill her. On the other hand Ellie is psychologically a very complex human being, she was very much fighting her own demons between a HUGE urge of revenge and the need of relief, a salvation. Ellie was mechanically fullfilling her plan until the very end when she realised that killing Abigail changes nothing, that relief and salvation came when she held Abby under water and could kill her instantly. I think Ellie realised (seeing Joel in her mind) that Joel wouldn't want her to seek revenage and put her own life at stake. She finally made peace with herself and accepted Joel's death. The ending was psychologically reasoned and logical. It was something out of the box. Not that "American happy ending" you all wanted.
In my opinion II part is better, more mature, rough, more complex and more psychological than the firts part.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s hard for me to express just how completely and utterly disappointing this game is - not just as at the gratuitous violence that serves no purpose other than to embellish trite narrative themes, but at the audacity and self indulgence of the writers who think their work is some form of sophisticated art. And it’s all the more disappointing given the brilliance of the first game.
Credit is first due to the passionate workers who created a technically stunning game. This is one of the best looking PS4 games to date, and a taste of what next generation graphics have in store. I know creating this game came at a huge cost – both emotionally, mentally, and physically – to the artists, animators and developers at naughty dog. We’re all aware of the stories behind the awful working conditions at this studio and the high attrition rate for employees/contractors. If only the director of this game was half as concerned with the working conditions of his vulnerable workers as he was with using a videogame to promote militant feminist power fantasies (see the comically muscular Abby and the pregnant women scaling heights and fighting). Systemic oppression comes in many forms; management at this studio should focus on making their environment a better place to work in for all before taking on the tall order of ridding the world of its social ills.
A game of this kind lives and dies by its story. The first game was beloved because it was a well-told story. It had relatable and interesting characters, and you were able to see their growth. It wasn’t a story designed to “subvert our expectations”, and it didn’t need to be. None of that can be said for this story. By and large, the story is trite and surprisingly juvenile in contrast to the prequel. Yes, violence begets violence. Yes, none of these characters are completely innocent in the broken world which they inhabit. So what, exactly?
The game starts off early with the death of Joel. He is brutally murdered by this new character called Abby (whom he initially saved during their first encounter), while Ellie is pinned down to watch in horror. This happens in the beginning of the game, without much context. For many, Joel is a beloved character and rightfully so. We come to love Joel by design through the first game. Having seen him lose his daughter in the introduction, we empathize with his struggle to find something to live for. We understand his decision to rescue Ellie after that long journey, who was taken unconscious to be operated on and killed. Let me make this abundantly clear to the director of this game: there is no moral basis that would justify killing a child without their consent, and children by definition cannot consent to such an act – regardless of what results such acts might bring about. Joel’s act to save her is not morally ambiguous, unless you’re morally depraved.
Joel, however, is made to answer for the sins of his past in the dumbest way possible. Leaving aside questions of morality, we’re supposed to somehow believe that a veteran with decades of experience in this world would somehow rescue strangers, follow them to their encampment outnumbered, and then tell them his name. This is the same Joel who could spot an ambush while driving a mile away. This is the same Joel who wouldn’t rescue a stranger in the introduction of the first game. The writing is inconsistent and beyond amateurish, and coupled with the unceremonious way they killed off the leading character, I really struggle to understand the creative decisions made here. That’s not to say there isn’t a right way to kill Joel. You can kill off a strong character without making them a bumbling idiot (see Gus in Breaking Bad). It’s obvious that Neil Druckmann had neither the talent nor skill to fully realize such a scenario. Instead, the director is more pre-occupied with inserting a character into the game bearing his likeness just to spit on Joel’s body. It’s no wonder videogames aren’t taken more seriously as art.
So this introduction is what sets the stage for Ellie’s revenge story. And it, too, is not a compelling story in the least bit. She kills hundreds and hundreds of people, brutally, I might say, only to find that she suddenly forgives Abby, because that’s what Joel would have wanted. She ends up losing everything, including her loved ones and two fingers, and the player comes to find that the dozens of hours they spent playing the game were all in vain. Oh, but you see, you didn’t realize that violence only begets more violence and nobody is innocent in this world. Don’t you feel bad for killing the dog we made you kill? The writers actually believe we would be impressed by the 9th grade attempt at moral philosophy. It’s such a miserable, nihilistic, and pointless story that serves no purpose, I can see why the studio refrains from using the word “fun".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to start by saying that I absolutely loved this game and I am really sorry ND and all the actors receive so much hate.
The gameplay is amazing (similar to the first one but enhanced). Graphics and lighting are simply astonishing. Really detailed animations and enriched environments. But what I loved the most is the story.
I am going to be honest, I was more excited about the gameplay because the story in the first one is just perfect and it is hard to make the second one better. But I am awestruck by how well written the story is. From almost the very beginning I saw that Ellie/Joel are not that different from Abby. I did not fully see her as a villain. She did exactly what Joel did or what Ellie was trying to do. And playing as Abby (which I loved) enforced that feeling even more. My heart was broken when I saw Abby on that pillar. I was looking for a strong, powerful, and simply buff woman. And it hurt to see what Rattlers did to her.
The ending which I personally think starts with the theater fight and ends with the rolling credits left me a complete mess. I was crying for over an hour. I loved it. Yes, it was sad. But it does not make it bad. These are two different things. The ending and the whole story are very well written. And the fact that some of the events are sad does not make it bad. I cried when Joel was killed. But I cried when I had to fight dying Abby as well. The story leaves you with lots of different emotions and thoughts. And I loved every minute of it.
I would like to thank the whole Naughty Dog team, the actors, and all other people who worked on this game. This is truly a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall it was an enjoyable experience playing that left me with a mixture of emotions all at once: frustration, sadness, determination and fear.

In regards to the improvements, I found the gameplay to be improved somewhat, adding in new mechanics (e.g. dodge during melee, going prone to hide/access certain areas) alongside with a few tweaks that made the combat segments more intense/enjoyable than the first instalment (e.g. easier to stealth kill, many options to approach enemies which caters to various play styles).

The visuals/audio I considered to be a vast improvement, every emotion evoked by each character felt authentic. The gruesome attention to detail from bashing someone's face in with a pipe or blood gushing out of a slit throat from your blade really aided in setting the gritty, morbid tone The Last Of Us is known for, however it is most certainly 'amped up' within Part II. Each voice actor/actress performed their roles very well-done, and I was genuinely surprised by the appearance of Laura Bailey and Jeffrey Wright.

Discussing the new characters, I honestly thought was not lacking, but they could've been improved slightly. The death of Joel had now forced me to start feeling for the new characters, Dina and Jesse. Unfortunately, they just didn't strike me as much as I'd hoped. I found as if they weren't given enough time for their personalities/backgrounds to breathe long enough. For example, the idea I had gotten from Jesse's character was that he had an Asian background, he was once in a relationship with Dina and at some point had gotten her pregnant. That was it. That's not to say I necessarily hated these characters, they were just mediocre at best. The dynamic relationship between Joel and Ellie on their journey through the states was a crucial element in Part I that made it so great. They are one of the most memorable and loveable video game duos of my generation. For Naughty Dog to kill him off was a bold move on their part and I could see why. They wanted to build more on the world of The Last Of Us.

Along with Dina and Jesse, Part II introduced the new protagonist Abby and her crew. Personally I couldn't stand Abby's character not only because of her intentions to murder Joel, but also I thought her personality was actually pretty cold and selfish. Despite all that, she was actually one of the more fleshed out characters of the entire game. Her motivations and actions throughout Part II could be argued as justifiable in some cases. I still disliked her however. The other members (Owen, Mel, Manny, etc.) again all were too similar to Dina and Jesse, just slightly mediocre characters with somewhat fleshed out backgrounds but it just wasn't enough to feel invested in them. The two characters that took me by surprise but was Yara and Lev who I thought were the most charming and likeable new characters. I was genuinely motivated to aid this ragtag brother-sister duo along with their issues.

Addressing the general plot... To be honest, at first I wasn't sure what I was getting into. I hadn't seen many of the trailers/gameplay reveals released prior so basically I delved in with no set expectations. Halfway through however, I thought so far the story was a complete mess. Everything that happened as it strung me along felt all over the place. Ellie's endeavours in Seattle was more concise and easy to follow where as Abby's adventures with Yara and Lev was convoluted and unpredictable. However after finishing the campaign and looking back on it, I grew to somewhat appreciate the muddy tone of the story. As much as a mess it was, it made me want to progress more because I was so on edge as to what was gonna happen until the end of the game. Despite the flawed storyline, Last Of Us Part II is still a riveting take on how the world would cope in an apocalyptic setting.

I will add this in, seeing the advertising after finishing the game TWICE now was most certainly misleading in the sense that Joel was depicted as a more major character in the story, taking Jesse's spot at certain points during the trailers. Yes, video game trailers are edited often to prevent giving away crucial plot elements but in Naughty Dog's case it was such a noticeable difference and for fans to feel betrayed in such a way I do not blame them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is no other word to describe The Last of Us part 2 but masterpiece, this isn’t just a game it is an experience. I am a massive fan of the original and this sequel builds on every aspect of the original. The gameplay - Solid controls and character manoeuvrability, everything works as it should and no frustratingly awkward controls like some 3rd person games. All game mechanics are simply to learn and after a few minutes you will get the hang of them. Ellie can now swim, go prone and jump freely unlike the original game. My only gripe with the gameplay was the boating sections, the controls felt tight and these section albeit small felt tacked on but this is a minor gripe. The graphics- Easily the best this generation, the character models are amazing and you could remove the HUD and think it was a CG movie. The environments are beautifully dirty gritty and realistic. The game never stutters, never loads and the cutscenes blend into gameplay seamlessly. This game pushes the PS4 to its limits. The story - Here is were a lot of people drop off and start to hate on this game. Personally I really loved it, it was epic, massive and you really felt the slog that these characters go through over the course of the few days. All the characters were fully realised and their decisions IMO were justified and I really understood what the game developers were going for with this story. I think people forget that this is a post apocalyptic bleak world full of monsters, horrific people and dredd. How could anyone possibly be able to put themselves in the players shoes and criticise their decisions. Yes this story has LGBT elements and a very minor transgender diversion for one character but all in all it is handled well and fair play to Naughty Dog for adding this much diversity to such a AAA game title. The Good - - an amazing epic story that sucks you in and takes you on a journey with each of the characters. - beautifully fully realised world
    - stunning set pieces - game runs buttery smooth - percent controls The Bad -
    - the game does drag in a few sections - the game rushes a few parts to get you from A to B - Joel doesn’t get as much attention as he deserves.
    - very linear levels, they feel big but there isn’t much room to explore. The Ugly - - the last couple hours feel that they were slightly rushed as the first 90% of the game takes place over 3 days yet the last 10% takes place over 1-2 years yet is glazed over. In conclusion I think everyone should experience TLOU2 it is a superb title and a worthy sequel to the original. The developers took a chance with a bold story they could of easily if rehashed the first game and it would of still sold amazingly but they chose to give us something new.

Story-telling and characterisation are way more sophisticated than its predecessor. The criticism that the story is full of severe plot holes or inconsistencies of character behaviours is inaccurate. Series of events and character actions are supported by sufficient details that explain why the story unfolds in the way it does. A number of such details are conveyed through minute dialogues, micro expressions, Ellie's journal logs (I'm not sure how many people actually read through the journal) etc. One also needs to read between the lines to fully understand the implication. As long as one notices these details, it's not that difficult to appreciate the story. Nevertheless, I'm not completely happy with the narrative because I'm afraid some of the key messages are too subtle to get across.
Technical aspects such as graphics and physics, though not flawless, are definitely top-notch.
In terms of gameplay, it depends on one's personal taste. As far as I'm concerned, I enjoyed the gameplay pretty well, even though it's not my favourite.
It would be a pity to deprive oneself of the opportunity to enjoy a potentially good, if not great, game simply because of the review bomb against it, not to mention that many of the criticisms are groundless.
In my opinion, PART II is a solid 8.5/10. Considering how biased its current score is, I'd like to give it 10/10.

This is where causual gamers got lost in translation. Naughty Dogs made us play the enemy! And tru ther story of Abby, we kind of see another world with the Seraphite and the WLF.

There is no happy song and dance in an apocalyptic world and people can die as sudden and as brutally as they do in LOU2. The game i have just finished was one of the most beautifully emotional games i've ever played and requires a deep understanding on the message and type of world LOU offers. Bought a ps4 to play it expecting a story of the caliber the 1st one had and it let me down. Returned the game, beautiful graphics but hope they red-con the story. The only decent story telling was in a few flashbacks.

Disappointing, slap in the face, was hoping for an epic game one the takes what it had from the first, and make it an epic tale of some sort. Where Ellie n Joel go on a new journey together either to save them selves or humanity, and I know it's been done. But honestly I would have preferred it over the **** show they put out. I was hoping for a game that I would remember forever until I'm on my death bed. Well naughty dog you funked up that dream. Looking for a new game so I can die happy!!!! Graphics and gameplay only redeeming factor for me lucky I didnt give it a 0 instead I give it a 4. They funking destroyed my fave character, she can piece her self together and fight again if another game comes out, but I didnt want her to be BROKEN in the first place. I have a priceless ming dynasty vase 'oh but it's ok cos I glued it together' what a steaming pile of sh*t. As I said could've given it a 0 but amount of work put in it deserves something. Expand

Eu adorei o jogo, gameplay e gráficos estão incríveis. A história me deixou triste e com raiva e triste de novo, mexeu comigo, adorei. Meu conselho é que jogue o game e tire suas próprias conclusões.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
