the only good thing from this game is the atmosphere looking
the game story is nonsense, far from the first instalment

To make this story work they made Joel seem like a complete idiot, putting him a situation that he would of never been in under normal circumstances. Then they make you hate this character so much that they force you to play as her/him, so stupid. I mean they had so many chances to make a good story but they bring in someone stupid into the studio, im looking at you Neil and Anita, in order to put in your stupid propaganda you had to ruin a good story. You both knew that if you made a new game and tried to sell this crap no one would buy it. The only way for both of you to make money for this is to destroy a beloved series. Plus look at it this way, no one cares that Ellie is a lesbian, she was in the first game and I thought it was fine. What is so bad is you force your agenda on a story that makes no since. A story full of so many plot holes but hey it makes your stupid politicians happy so hey you win. You destroyed Ellie and Joel, but hey you got Abby which also sucks. Also they way you all censored reviews you didnt like is another win. BOO Expand

Graphics are pretty much beautiful in most cases.
With such beautiful appearance this game gives you the most awful way to continue story of the first game.
To enjoy the game you have to get ready to go through the awful amount of cringe and logically faulty story.

The main problem of the whole story is that it shifts from zombie apocalypses to soap opera with zombie apocalypses in background.
Dialogues and character interactions are cringe and stupid.
For the most part it feels like low quality fanfiction.
Putting aside progressive talking points being brought each time, character interactions often feel forced.

Another problem is introduction of secondary hero, who is actually just psychopathic murderer.
The problem with that is that we're forced to be empathetic to it, despite knowing little to nothing about it.
Background is expanded later on with flashbacks, but it is already too late as you hate such awful character for a long time as you hunt it down while playing as Ellie.

Despite Ellie being more cringe due to bad writing, it is at least somewhat enjoyable to watch her going on rampage.

Summary: play this game on youtube, or buy with discount later on. It doesn't deserve full price

I'm not against the idea of Joel dying but it is not necessary to have it so violent. He is the loved protagonist from the past game and to have him killed in such a way is terrible. Also to have Ellie not kill Abby in the end is it terrible ending. After having Ellie kill all of these people just to get revenge and not get it is the worst kind of ending. It's like Thanos did all of his atrocities to get the stones and in the end not snap because he didnt feel like it. I loved TLOU 1 and that game is one of my favorites when it comes to the lore of the world and the zombie virus. I hope that the story ends here so Druckmann cant ruin another franchise even more. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First and foremost I must acknowledge the beautiful graphics and smoothness of gameplay, its as close to perfect as I've seen in any video game. The animations, sound, and world building is second to none. That's where the positives end for me. The plot completely drags beloved characters through the mud for no reason whatsoever. Its all hopelessly nihilistic. None of the characters overcome any struggle at all. Ellie ends up losing EVERYTHING shes built. Loses her father figure, Lover and child, all the way down to losing the ability to play the guitar. Congratulations naughty dog, you've succeeded in creating the most masochistic story ever told.

As far as the specifics of the story, I dont really want to get into that. The one issue I will bring up with the ending though is how in the hell does a beautiful flashback of Joel make Ellie want to STOP drowning Abby? Wouldn't that thought make her want to finish the job EVEN MORE?? What an absolute joke. Its really starting to feel like if there is a severe emotional reaction caused by a shocking scene with dramatic music behind it, the shills will just keep coming back for more. These writers fail to understand there needs to be so much more to a story to have an audience fall in love with the characters in this world. None of these characters are humanized at all or realistic in the slightest... We get to watch multiple "tasteful" sex scenes (according to the critics) which in reality are more of softcore porn.. Let me get this straight.. two 18 year old girls still obviously struggling with the notion of their homosexuality have a mature, intense sexual experience (while smoking weed)? Have the writers forgotten what it was like to be that young... Absolutely absurd writing, top to bottom, Im not even gonna touch on the abomination that is Abby. If we have any hope of maintaining good story telling in this medium we have to stop buying this trash.

Story and characters: Neil Druckmann wanted to tell a story about violence and revenge. But what the hell. Okay, you're killing some characters. But where is nice replacement for them. New characeters in The Last of Us 2 are really boring. Abby is really boring, that was really painful to play second part of game because it's so boring.

This story could fit in 10 hours, but for some reason it stretched up to 25-30 hours.

    Gameplay:
A few new mechanics in combat, but after 10 hours it becomes boring to play this game. Fight with people, fight with infected, fight with people, fight with some boss. You're keeping doing it over and over again.
Exploring some areas after few hours becomes really ridiculous. If you find a safe than you need to find a note that contains code. And the note is located right next to the safe. Often notes contain just a code, but rarely it's a little puzzle like some date you need to find out. A lot of boring notes. It's so ridiculous to see that everybody right before death has written its own note describing life, situation that was going on there and kinda like that.

Animations: nothing to say, it is awesome. So smooth and realistic.
Graphics: nothing to say, it is awesome too. Even after graphics downgrade, this game is beautiful. Especially cutscenes.
Music: nothing is remembered. A lot of simple ambients.

A Step up from the Quantic Dreams experiences. I was hoping TLOU Part 2 would dethrone RDR2 for me as my current favorite piece of game storytelling.
Unfortunately it was not to be , whilst the game play is passable it somehow felt more clunky for me than the first one , however I don't really rate these games on the game play as its more about the story and experience, the gameplay just has to be passable to not be boring, unfortunately this game somehow takes the formula of the first game and makes it really boring.

with the story , without giving any spoilers, this to me comes across as a classic case of bad writing where the writers had an idea of all the scenes they wanted and just wrote the story around that , rather than focusing on story first.

all other criticisms aside I dont care if the game is political or wants to push a message , so long as it does so through telling a compelling story with compelling characters.

this game has neither compelling story or characters and they somehow managed to make the old characters boring and aside from physical appearance, they seem to bear no resemblance to their previous iterations.

I wanted to hold off on reviewing this game until I had played it as I thought many of what we are hearing about it on both sides is propaganda. Unfortunately now that I have played it I can say for me its just a boring game with a poorly thought out story that seems more concerned with chaining a bunch of set pieces together than telling a story.

Full disclosure , I couldn't finish this game , it was too boring , I ended up watching videos and streams to see the end , and its not often I give up on a game.

unfortunately there is no resolution or real growth for the characters and you get to the end and feel like nothing has really happened.

such a shame , Naughty Dog are one of the best studios out there for this type of thing, but Kudos to the artistic integrity to make the game they wanted and to stick by their vision.

I don't like the fans dictating to artists what their art should be . That's the artists prerogative, but I think the dialogue needs to be open , I didn't like this game, but I respect this is the game they wanted to make. Maybe their next game will be more down my alley.

This game really is not anything like I thought it would be and in fact it is completely the opposite of what I thought it would be. I'm just quite speechless.

Let me tell you what my experience consisted of:

Initially when they introduced Joel again talking to Tommy: This is awesome! I'm right at home again!

When they forced me to play a character I didn't have any desire to play: Why do I have to play her, I hope it's not for long.

The entire spot that kicks off the game: This sucks but I'm sure it'll make it a better story.

The Entirety of Seattle: THIS IS AWESOME

The second half of the game: This is terrible, just 10 more hours of it? That sounds like a grind so I'm just going to look up the ending.

My time on YouTube: This ending is terrible.

My opinion on this game is to steer clear, the gameplay is good but they'll get you invested just to pull you away right at the climax of the story and force you to do stuff that really just takes you out of the experience and immersion to the point that you just google how it ends to get it over with.

This is such a stain on the franchise, a real damn shame as it was my very favorite franchise ever.

For 2013 the gameplay was fantastic but I felt it was at best routine and at worst felt bored. I still like the crafting mechanics but felt it could have been improved seeing as a similar AAA title 'Days Gone' had done this element better in their game last year. I discovered that I had a lot of glitches in my playtrue. I ran into instances when fighting enemies where I fell through walls into nothingness repeatedly. Other times, my character became stuck on invisible ladders while climbing walls. If it happened once or twice, I would let it slide but it felt like the game was made with a first day patch in mind. From a graphics standpoint, I expected much more. The graphics are improved since the last game circa 2013, which is expected, yet are not as groundbreaking as I have heard from friends. They are quite similar if not slightly worse than the graphics from 'RDR2' and 'GOW' which came out more than two years ago. That being said, the graphics were one of the things I enjoyed about the game. The story was difficult to get through. I was able to understand characters motivations but felt that the execution was lacking. I enjoyed Ellies relationship with Dina but could not connect with any of the other new characters in the same way. I felt that Jesse's character in particular could have been fleshed out more given the games running time, which ran longer than the first. It made me hard to sympathise with these new characters when the revenge plot kicks in. I think the game lacks the ambiguity of its predecessor. The first game made characters organically feel grey. Joel, Marlene, Bill and Ellie all had their own intentions that you could understand even if you disagreed with it. Most of the characters in the first seemed to show human emotion towards their actions, both the good and the bad yet the sequel strays from this. Even the worst characters in the first showed a glimpse of humanity in their actions yet the sequel takes all of the humanity out of the characters. Overall, in a story driven game if you find yourself at times bored and at others wishing to play other excellent story driven games such as 'Life is Strange' or 'Telltales TWD' then you know the story has issues. 16. I don't feel for her and I don't f***ing care. Why the task is so difficult. --score 3.
    17. F**k it. BS, I quit --score 2.

And then I watched all the video game play. Yeah. it's a solid 2. The 2 points are for the programmers that spent 7 years to create this game. 0 point!! for the story.

I am adding more to this review. I think Neil Druckmann is just too arrogant. He thought he can just manipulate the players who had a deep emotional binding with the characters in previous story of the last of us, by making the player feel guilty and force them to walk through "the other side of the story". It just does not work. He just underestimated that binding. We saw the same thing in the game of throne where Jaime battles against Daenerys. However, we have the difficult feeling of choosing either of them because we knew their stories and it took 8 seasons to build up those two characters. The strategy is to build up the characters and then create conflict. But in the last of us part II, Neil tries to create conflict and then build up the characters which is the absolutely wrong sequence. I hated it.

The good moments and sequences are few and far between but the rest of the story is poorly written, with many people acting out of character. Also, the pacing is very weak as there is a huge change in the middle that basically takes you back to the square 1. The gameplay is good but is pretty repetitive after a while.

    Pros:
    -insanely good graphics
-Runs very smoothly with me havent had an issue with it
-although gameplay zombie wise gets a little stale but overall it was good

    Cons:
    -Incredibly unfulfilling story
-Game fills your throat with feminism and lgbtq stuff and stomps on your face until you swallow it
-The game feels more like a political argument than an actual enjoyable game.
-If i had to force myself to like or even understand abby i wouldn't be successful at all
-The love/sex scenes were actually very very cringey and incredibly out of place
-Didnot enjoy playing as abbie at all

The game is depressing from start to finish and many times the game is just downright boring. People are praising the game for being "progressive" and pushing forward a certain narrative. Why are we judging a game based on it's political ideas? The first game was so much fun, and yes was depressing at times, but everything connected and made sense. I would give a hard pass on this game and the only reason why I gave this game a 0 instead of a 4 or 5 is because of the way Naughty Dog along with Sony have treated their community. Talk about Fascism? How about you stop taking down people's videos and channels for criticizing you?

Dissapointed and upset by the story - I wont spoil it for you but everything which made The last of us 1 so special has been destroyed by this game. The visuals are great , im totally happy to see how great they are - but the story is like visting the political mind of someone you dont agree with. So its actually painful to have to sit through the narative of the story - the violence in the game is so over the top , its simply not pleasant and theres just no need for it. I dont admire extreme violence and i really dont want to sit through hours of it. The ending was awful. such a bad story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My view of TLOU2's Storytelling: Joel dies a pitiful, sickening, post traumatic stress inducing death. Justice is not properly served throughout the entirety of Ellie’s brutal crusade. The newly introduced characters are basically irrelevant and apart from serving as Ellie's emotional support; Jesse, Dina, Tommy, and a few other characters are simply killed off or brutally injured without being given a fighting chance. Tommy and Ellie do get some vengeance in killing Manny, Nora, Owen, Mel and a few others. However, Abby, the catalyst of their conflict, escapes with her life time and time again. Along the way, there are some good (I'd even say "great") moments of character development for each respective character(s). Although, it's more or less just an emotional tease for the viewer and does not have any major impact on the outcome of the story. They show time and time again that Naughty Dog was able to produce a tear jerking story of meaningful friendships and satisfying revenge but decided to avoid that route and instead give players a dreadful tale to follow from beginning to end. As you continue to play, Abby is arguably the focus of this game and being forced to play from her perspective is torturous. I'm assuming Naughty Dog tried to give Abby a sympathetic outlook on the game's story in order to make her a more tolerable character. We learn that Abby is afraid of heights, likes collects coins, helped her father rescue a Zebra, etc. She even rescues a young child from a group of survivors similar to, but far more savage than, that of David's group from TLOU1. During that event Abby is supposed to reveal her positive characteristics but it isn't before long that we are reminded of her equally monstrous desire for revenge and stomach for brutality. Abby is only compassionate to her friends and will kill anyone else without remorse and having to carry out that violence by her hands is cringeworthy. Ellie shows empathy for her enemies and is shown to be suffering from PTSD throughout her day to day life; especially after cornering and killing Nora. She even tries to sympathize with Abby by telling her that she knows why Abby wanted to kill Joel before they proceed to fight in a theater. Ellie understands that she was a victim of Joel's lie and Abby was a victim of Joel's massacre. Ellie is mature and able to reason with the enemy while Abby is pretty much just shooting whoever makes her mad. More than this, it is revealed later in the game that Abby *never* witnessed her dad being killed by Joel. She only saw his corpse some time after he was murdered. While in contrast, Ellie was cruelly forced to witness Joel's murder and therefore Ellie's lust for revenge has a unique justification that Abby's does not. Abby went out of her way on a 4 year long mission to hunt and kill a man that had put his past behind him and she gets away with it: Abby escapes and starts a new life with her friend Lev. Ellie, our protagonist and the victim of Abby's violence, does not get that luxury and is left with no shoulder to lean on as she returns to a farm house with physical and mental scarring.

My view of TLOU2's Game-play: Without expressing my opinions on every aspect of this game, just know that I find the game-play very satisfying and rightly improved. The fighting mechanics are much better than before, especially in hand to hand combat as the player now has the option to dodge incoming attacks. The player can now also jump, maneuver via rope, and crawl. Most of the surrounding areas are also available for exploration which gives the player a true sense of freedom. The graphics are wonderful with both the environment and the characters in the environment and the lighting provides a very immersive feeling for the player and viewer alike. The physics of most objects are very realistic and I like the way that snow and rain interact with the world. I also find the voice acting and sound effects to be phenomenal as the speech, coughs, grunts, laughs, cries, yells, gunfire, footsteps and more were completely believable and did not distract the player from the setting of the events.

My overall review: To sum this up. I was consistently tense throughout the entirety of the game after Joel's death and from that point forward each of my fears were confirmed and often surpassed around every corner. Naughty Dog achieved their goals in delivering a tragic story and I have no complaints about inconsistencies with their storytelling. My problem is that the story they chose to tell is one of injustice and despair. Our characters did not have a happy ending. Joel's death alone left me with so many tears and negative emotions that I had no choice but to see through the entire story just so that I could get proper closer. The game-play alone deserves a 4/5 but the story is essentially evil.

The story. Without spoiling the story, I can say that its inconsistent and poorly written. "Brave" and "Bold" is not what I'd describe it. While its being compared to the likes of "GOT Season 8", I'd also compare it to a bad horror film, where shock is the only factor it offers. This is important because 'The Last of Us" is a story based game and gameplay is only a way to transport the story. Most people are not disliking the Game because of its choice of sexuality for its characters. The characters are boring and story forces you to attach yourself to them (which fails). They are not very likable, trans or not trans. The story itself is not very realistic (whether about the world or characters) and the concept of "survival among st the apocalypse" narrative is thrown out the window.

Sadly, I cannot recommend this game to anyone and I hope they revamp Part 2 into a different narrative

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Man I just finished the game and had to make a Metacritic account to talk this through.

Graphics are beautiful, music is great, characters are complex... The damn story though.

In my 20+ years of gaming, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it. The first 2 hours we had to swallow the hard pill that is Joel’s death, brutal and I feel unnecessary so early on in the game, senseless in the way it was done but I pressed on, accepting that this was the plot driver of the game and ready to get revenge as Ellie and actually happy to have Dina by my side. The first 10 hours of gameplay were ok, one of my favourite parts of the game actually was watching Ellie and Dina’s relationship develop as well as appreciating their dynamic much like Ellie and Joel’s in the first game.. however this doesn’t last long.

I appreciate Ellie’s thirst for revenge as the plot driver, I felt it was strong enough and although I struggled to enjoy playing some parts, I did want to rush to the Aquarium to **** up Abby so it was to my surprise when we don’t find her but then she turns up at the theatre, ****s up Tommy and kills Jesse?! Man I was ready for her to BURN, I had watched the interviews with NaughtyDog and thought I understood why this game was about hate... but oh no was I wrong. Gun pointed on Ellie and fade to black to some **** I have never been so mad at a video game before, NaughtyDog had me HATING this game with 15 hours still to play.

**** Abby and **** her arms. **** her backstory, her friends and any other associated **** I did not care one bit that her dad was the surgeon or that her arms are top dog in the WLF. I could’ve gotten over all of this if we only had to play with her for like an hour or so but half of the game.... HALF OF THE ****ING GAME PLAYING AS THE **** WHO KILLED JOEL, WHOSE ONLY PERSONALITY TRAIT IS ARM DAY?!?! Those 10 hours were the most painful to play, I genuinely did not enjoy one moment of it. If NaughtyDog wanted us to experience a new character and explore new storylines which tie into Ellie’s then they should’ve literally picked any other character. It feels like they asked us to play as David from the first game after everything he did to Ellie - violated is the word I’m searching for here.

Not only was the gameplay painful and unrelenting whilst playing as Abby but what felt worse was I had no emotional connection to her other than hate. I did not want her to live and was angered by every cut scene. I did like the introduction of the Scar kids though, Yana and Lev was it? They made the gameplay a little bit more bearable as I painfully waited for the words, SEATTLE DAY 3 to appear on my screen.

One bit I will admit was cool was going to the island, during the thunderstorm as the WLF attacked the Scars and being involved in some of the fighting. It felt deliciously dramatic as everything unfolded and was on fire... only to once again be let down by Yanas death followed by NaughtyDog forcing some uncharacteristic kind of sibling/paternal bond between Abby and the newly orphaned Lev. Let’s skip past some **** and talk about the theatre fight scene. It was cruel of Naughty Dog to make us play as Abby while she beat the **** out of Ellie. Cruel to make us watch pregnant Dina be impaled with an arrow. In my opinion, Tommy should’ve killed Lev and then they should’ve switched us back to Ellie to finish of Abby but NO that would’ve been too kind to the audience wouldn’t it. The disappointment just settled in my stomach as I realised Abby got to walk away after 18+ hours of either chasing her or playing as her. Even after the 10 hours of playing as her I still wanted her to die.

So the next very odd but momentarily wholesome small bit of gameplay of Ellie and Dina with the baby at the house. Finally I thought, finally Ellie has some peace, the secluded house, Dina and the baby to look after, sure a little PTSD here and there but who doesn’t have that in that world right? I really was hoping for end credits to pop up at any moment, Ellie had some peace I didn’t need more than that but man did I cry and beg right alongside Dina for Ellie to stay after Tommy asked her to go back out for revenge.

The whole story/gameplay after that felt so forced. Abby and Lev searching for Fireflies and Ellie chasing them in California? Basically shooting through a whole concentration camp INJURED just to find this **** only to have a pathetic punch up and then... letting her go. Man I ****ing hated playing the remaining 5 hours more than I did playing the 10 with Abby, something I did not think was possible at the time. The one silver lining was the flashback with Joel at the end, my heart felt warm knowing he didn’t die thinking Ellie hated him.

**** NaughtyDog, you should’ve got your writers from Uncharted 4 on this but instead looks like you got someone from Ubisoft to destroy Ellie and Joel’s story.

As someone that played tlou1 five times I am fully disappointed with the sequel. The game suffers from a large amount of inaccurate marketing not only regarding the story but the gameplay too. If Joel dies that is fine, he was murderer who arguably deserves to die. But if you are going to show him in the trailers making it seem that he will be interacting with Ellie a lot and "not letting her do this on her own" then you are straight up lying and involving the story with the trailers, which is very weak for the writers to need support from. Secondly, the big bad new infected that they didn't want to spoil is just a bigger bloater that creates a smaller infected, and you only fight it once. There is no surprise there and the original bloater actually challenged me more. It did look cool tho. But that is all I'm giving the game points for: looking pretty. In the first game when I messed up a stealth section I was actually excited to work through it. In the sequel however I felt like I just wanted to get over it due to the repetitive encounters. Over all I respect naughty dog for attempting something so ambitious. But man did they pull a game of thrones on this game. Graphics and Characters: 8/10. Some bugs here and there, nothing serious.
Music/OST: 10/10. Santaolalla career is perfect. Any music sheet from his hands are a masterpiece.
Gameplay: 7/10. Feels a little rough sometimes to play. It's not mechanically smooth as its Prequel.

Resume: NAUGHTY DOG, YOU CAN'T GIVE OF THIS CRAP DISGUISED AS A SEQUEL!

I feel very very bad with this. 7 years being waiting for this day and now... its worst than the Cordyceps infection.

Don't misunderstand me but the plot its a mixture of LGTBI+ that nobody cares but still important to sell this Game quickly, vengeance not well grounded plus the murder of one of the most iconic characters in the last 10 years... All this in a story that doesn't feel connected and worked well from Naughty Dog.

The introduction of new characters to the drama was intelligent until you kill Joel, and worst.... they forced us to play with that Character because not even Tommy or Dina are powerful characters to be played. (Damn... Dina as character and partner is useless as F***, only thinking in who's the next sugar mommy)

The entire story doesn't feels good, in connection and continuity. They try to sell an inclusive game, trying to be "White Knight" of justice on this matter but, nobody cares!!! We're only wanted a good conclusion between Joel and Ellie cos' it's obvious (since the ending of TLoU) that she's gonna know the truth sooner or later about her story with the Fireflies and her immunity. For god sake... You simply destroyed a good story.

About "Abby's Story"... Simply don't match with the game. I fell asleep 4 o 5 times with this part. I can comprehend that you want to introduce very well her reasons about "WHY" she kills Joel but... Her story it's more like a DLC than the main game itself. Not bad as all her story of course, but not for a main game for sure.

This Title has incredible potential and i'd hope Naughty Dog launches very soon a HUGE DLC to compensate things.

Joel deserves another ending, another conclusion to his life and his decisions... not be thrown away like this.

Graphics, Music, Gameplay: Not bad and not perfect, the only exception here it's Santaolalla's work. That man knows how to put you in mood.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OK, this game is horrible but let me explain, in this game I expected a story that connects me to the characters like the first game with engaging dialogue that lets me understand and see them make decisions that make complete sense in the situation. hahaha no there is none of that there is so much BS that goes on and to the point that you are cheering on for these poorly developed characters to die and die again as they make the most stupidest decisions that lead to serious cringe to wtf just happened moments making you lose brain cells along the way. The story is all over the place as you have flashbacks to why the character is doing this, but in the second half, you play as Abby in an earlier section of the game to catch up to ellies part so you can have symphony for her. and you keep on having flashbacks in flashbacks and this keeps on happening over and over which kills the suspense of the game constantly. The gameplay is so easy playing hard mode is comparable to easy mode in the first game and I had to switch it to grounded so I can have a challenge. the gameplay is the exact same as the first with one new infected that is basically a suicide bomber that does dick all damage, and all enemies have the same rail back and forth ai as the first. but the only thing that they did change which impressed me is the stalkers as they are no longer seeable in listening mode which makes things more tense but can be exploited by running around as they are prone blocked (because they are hiding) they have a solid second delay to react to your new location and are easily killable. the crafting system is so boring that you can easily get the guns to one-shot anything. Compared to the first game where you had to get tools to be able to further upgrade the weapons and it was noticeable that they improved slightly but now it doesn't matter. Now the graphics/ animation holy **** they are so beautiful that it shows a nextgen feel which pushes the hardware to its fullest but knowing that it is wasted on this story you just don't care. With everything other than the story it is at a 5/10 but the story brings it to a 2/10 or 3/10
I'm so disappointed that this is what they had come up with in 7 years.

Storytelling is all over the place. We play as the character that kills the protagonist of the previous game and witness it twice to see from her perspective. Because of this the ending feels forced and out of character. Everyone makes dumb choices. Ellie figured taking revenge is not worth it at the last moment, after killing hundreds to get to her. Its as bad as Daenerys turning evil and night king turning stupid in a single episode. Expand

The plot and ending of this game is just awful, but the graphics and gameplay are very good. But I see no reason to buy a similar game for a sake of graphics and gameplay. If you don't care about everything except graphics, you can buy it.

This game has the best graphics to date, the combat is slightly above the original game but the story is awful. Naughty dog missed the heart and soul of the original game, the pacing is off, combat is repetitive and this sequel should not exist because the original was wrapped up pretty well. Am disappointed with the developers.

The Last of Us part 1 was a seminal work. The Last of Us part 2 is so incongruous by comparison that it feels like whiplash. Safe yourself the time and go replay the original.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played the first game and loved it, so i did my best to avoid and ignore any of the leaks posted recently. I was utterly disappointed in this sequel, complete disregard for the characters and their personalities which were setup in the first game. The story then goes on to ham-fistedly shout about a very basic moral statement 'REVENGE BAD!!'. It continues to shout this all game and tries to end on the same note, despite the main antagonist getting revenge and she's completely fine.

The game tries to make us feel empathy towards various characters in very lazy ways i.e flashbacks. While the flashbacks themselves are some of the most well executed aspects of the game in terms of contained storytelling, they are used in the worst possible way. Hours after a supposedly major character death (whose name i immediately forgot or never even remembered) these flashbacks show up to try and humanise the dead character and try to make the player feel bad for something they've already forgotten about doing.

The game also tries to stress the method of killing these people is so brutal and graphic, as to make Ellie break down at times, despite having just mowed through 100 other people, killing them in just as graphic, if not worse ways. The game tries cheap tricks to compound on this feeling, such as the 'ha, she was pregnant' card like 3 times and the 'how could you kill an animal' card.

As for the controls and gameplay, nobody really plays this game for these aspects, but to put a final nail in this coffin, they suck. Like everything else in the game, its been made to look nice but they are still the same controls from the game 7 years ago. The extend, that i get bored playing it at times. You didn't notice it in part 1, because there were regular story beats, or character interactions to break up the longer stretches between key moments. Here we have very extended stretches, where the character you play, is completely alone, for a long time, so there is nothing to distract you from the poor gameplay.

The only redeeming area of this game for me, is the artwork, both acted and drawn. The world and people in it are animated incredibly well and there are some magnificent panoramic shots. The mo-cap voice acting was also second to none, other than maybe the first game. Just a shame, the phenomenal actors and actresses were given such utter drivel to work with.

Part 2 improves on the first game graphically, but is far worse in every other way. The creators either completely forgot what made the original so great, or they got too caught up in trying to differentiate the two. Regardless, Part 2 is a chore to go through, and is especially bad since it follows up one of my favorite games of all time. Honestly, the game may have been better-received if it were a stand-alone title. It would still be a bad game, but at least it wouldn't be compared to the masterpiece the first game was (and is).

Basically, this is a story-based game with a terrible story. I would not buy a controller if this game came with it for free.

I felt this story was a complete departure from what made the first game so good, and only time is between the positive attention this game is receiving and the dizzying reality it has completely failed at leaving the kind of valuable mark that now appears a one-hit-wonder in the first. Unfortunately, this sequel isn’t warranted, and its best quality of reconciling Joel’s death through intelligent characterization in Abby is ultimately a plot point fundamentally reliant on the complex morality of the first game. The writing team has failed to meet the quite fairly brutal expectations set by the first game, but I didn’t ever think it could be this vapid, poorly paced, and with Ellie’s awful characterization, at times even an unenjoyable experience. It was a mistake to do this game without being able to top the first, and that will be the legacy of this instalment eventually. Expand

If you've played the original Last of Us, just remember the scene where Joel consoles Ellie during winter. It's heavy, it's emotional. The sequel does not have anything remotely close to this emotional. It barely has fleeting moments of flashbacks to the good times. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a disservice to the first. The Gameplay is similar to the original and in no way has changed, revolutionized or done anything groundbreaking. The graphics are terrific as to be expected from this studio. The problem is in the story itself and the decisions that characters are made to enact upon. Joel's death was expected but the manner in which it occurred is what upsets many, the out of character decisions he makes that leads to this outcome. Then after that we are forced to play as one of the most unlikable characters in gaming history. It's not because of how she looks, it's because of how she acts. Ellie is also destroyed in the character development department. There seems to be absolutely no redeeming qualities left in her and the cycle of violence is a poor answer for that to happen. The end of course is a complete mess. There is no pay off. No real advancement of the previous story about infected and the world in general. Another issue is how it was presented in the media as a story about Joel and Ellie, it is a story about Abby and Ellie. The bait and switch tactic is terrible. Finally the false copyright strikes on YouTube and Twitter for people who talked about spoilers, they did not show any copyright material and only gave an opinion on what was leaked but they were crucified. I will always love the first game but this is a travesty. Expand

The writing for established characters in the previous game is inconsistent with their actions in this game, like in the beginning hours where caution well seasoned survivors Tommy and Joel walk themselves into a trap all the while Joel, who has explicitly shown in the previous game to be able to tell the signs of an ambush, assumes nothing of the encounter. The only saving graces of this story focused game is the graphics, and the Gameplay mechanics do little to evolve in comparison to the previous game, while keeping in mind that this game has had 7 years of development to improve upon them.
