The first Last of Us was an amazing game that, though dark and realistic, expressed hope, compassion, and sympathy for the characters. It was easy to get invested in them and relate to their struggles. Its opening sequence still gets me to tear up because of how brilliantly it presented the horror of the outbreak and Joel's tragic backstory.

The Last of Us II was an unneeded sequel, before and after experiencing the game. The first game ended perfectly, and didn't need a follow-up, but I was interested nonetheless. This game however was not worth it at all. Character motivations and decisions are automatic in the since that they always go for the dramatic and violent action, regardless if it makes sense. There is no human story to this, unlike the first game. No hope, no reason to see these characters reach the end of their "journey." It is just an unending slog of revenge and death, with no alternative outlet or choice in the matter. You are told that everything you are doing is wrong, but are forced to play that way when you don't want to. You can't get invested in the characters because they are either underdeveloped or you lack sympathy for them, even though the game tries to get you to sympathize, it utterly fails at it. Just about everything is done for shock value, and along with the bemoaning cycle of revenge and death, this game have zero replay value and is a slog just to get through one play-through.

I often felt that the game was pointless. What goal is worth all of this? Who should I root for? Why do characters keep choosing to kill each other when they have a way out? The game destroys the characters I cared about, both literally and psychologically, and tries to get me to like their killers. Sure, violence is bad...and that's it. The game doesn't really have much more to say. Remember when this was about surviving a post apocalypse with zombies? Yah, now people only care about what other humans are doing, which kinda misses the point of the setting.

The gameplay is fine, basically the same as the previous game. The environments are stunning, as expected. Not to use a buzz term, but it is exceptionally applicable to this: The Last of Us II is much like The Last Jedi, you can have a beautiful looking piece of entertainment, but visuals alone cannot get you invested in it when its core-- the story and characters-- are rotten.

The story is pitiful and its a shame that such a good looking game, let alone a sequel to a brilliant game, is utterly pointless when its all said and done. If you are looking for something with the same gameplay, stick with the first one and the Uncharted games. The only points this game gets is for its visuals, animation, and gameplay, which are expected to be good for a AAA game, but the story, which is the main selling point for The Last of Us II, is a disappointing, depressing, nihilistic trek that destroys what made the first game great, is drudgery to play because it makes you do things you just don't want to do or aren't invested in, and leaves you nothing in return except misery. Don't waste your money.

Overall it's not that bad of a game. A truly average one with progressive political bias, good graphics and good locations. A acceptable game, but a mock as the continuation of the first game. I would give a better rating if they changed the name of the characters and sold it as anything else but tlou.

What a sad turn this franchise got. I don't see more future for it anymore.

The originals game was driven by very believable and well written characters more so than anything else. Joel and Ellie were very relatable in a surrogate father and adopted daughter sense. Two simply trying to survive the world and leave it better than they found it. The characters were likable and very much built a bond not only with each other, but with us as the player.

Then here comes Part 2 where Joel is suddenly the bad guy, there's nothing hopeful, there is no way around making terrible choices and then being chastise for it. Then being forced to play a significant portion of the game as the character who killed him. While there is motivation for this character to have done what she did, we didn't build the relationship or understand the character like we had with Joel and Ellie in the previous game. Prior to taking control, we literally only knew her as an enemy.

Sure, the graphics and sounds are great, but it doesn't excuse the bad story and character assassinations we didn't need or want. Joel represents the fans in their eyes, he deserved a better ending and we deserved a better game.

I’ll just say this: many games in the past have made me play sections of a game where the I didn’t agree with what the protagonist was doing. Games like shadow of the Colossus and the original the last of us were able to pull this off because they successfully put me inside the main characters head, made me see things from their point of view. Above everything else, I think this is where the last of us part 2 fails. It’s just twenty+ hours of horrible people doing horrible things, for reasons I can’t sympathize with.

TLOUS part 2 pushes the limits in terms of graphics which are frankly gorgeous, the musical score is beautiful and hits at the right times, voice acting is great, and actors elevate almost every line. This is expected at this point in the generation and is not why we are here. So, why is the story so shockingly bad?

Characters just kind of wander from place to place, the interactions often leave you feeling dry, characters are paper thin, and on top of this it is littered with McGuffins and plot holes. It is a constant barrage of shock value moments, that leave you scratching your head in the end. This is a failure of storytelling on almost every conceivable level. TLOUS part 2 is how Not to do a Naruto revenge plot and is a wasted opportunity. Naughty Dog wanted to hit the golf ball so hard that they end up missing and breaking their back in the process.

To the real reason the game upsets me is the narrative direction ND took the fame. I dont agree and feel it overlooked what made the first game special. The switching of gameplay between ellie and Abby was annoying. I didnt care for Abby as a character and I dont think she had much development and was the typical i want revenge and im upset. Very cliche to say the least. Also the ending was something I felt was not great. They could have went so many directions with this game and to me it feels like every wrong path they could have taken they did. I said feom day one that the first last of us was damn near the perfect game. It ended in such a way it didn't need a sequel and making one would definitely fall short of the first and ruin the magic the first one created. I feel that scenario I imagined has come true. So to recap. Amazing graphics. Good solid gameplay but a very lacklusyer narrative that graphics and gameplay couldn't carry. Im giving it a 2/10. The score might seem harsh but I feel ND let fans down and really ignored the things that made the first one special and to try and be out there and go for shock value only shocked in the wrong way and led to gamers joining together to review bomb the game. Also the rumored horrible work environments and early leaks didnt help. Expand

Story wise, knowing it's subjective but for me is a no. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imagine if on the next installment of God of War, Kratos gets killed by some elf's child for revenge 2 hours into the gameplay. That would suck.
After all the buildup of the character of being such a badass and a fighter, the character dies in such disrespectful way and this happened to Joel.
When I first heard the leaks of Joel's death, my prediction was that Ellie's girlfriend would get murdered and Ellie goes out for revenge. Joel follows her and when Ellie gets into trouble, Joel would be saving Ellie and during the process get killed. This angers Ellie even more and motivates her to get her revenge. I honestly think this would a respectful way to present Joel's death, saving Ellie.
Joel's death is not even the worst part. With good writing with such major character dying so early in the game, I think the game could have received 9/10, but rest of the writing is horrible too. For second half of the game, the player is forced to play as Joel's killer, Abby and I think the devs were trying to make players sympathize(?) with Abby for her actions and make her look like a good person or likeable character (which was not working for me btw). Some of her actions are horrendous and it pissed me off that I had so play as her for such a long time and it felt like a waste of time for me. I think Abby's backstory could have been released as DLC (idk who would buy it) and cut down the main campaign's playtime significantly.
Finally the ending was so unsatisfying. You play 20+ hours to let Abby go. I guess Ellie had this sudden realization that revenge is bad after killing hundreds of people to get to Abby. Ellie was fine killing so many people but she can't kill one person who actually killed Joel. After that, she returns to the house where Dina was supposed to wait for her to find nobody waiting. The game ends with Ellie failing to play guitar since she lost two of her fingers in final confrontation with Abby. It also shows this bittersweet conversation between Ellie and Joel about Ellie telling Joel that she won't be able to forgive Joel for what he did at the hospital from Last of Us and you can see Joel holding back his tears. I honestly felt so bad for Joel this game who saved Ellie because she reminded him of his dead daughter, Sarah, just to be disrespected by Ellie and get killed by random new character. Also, when did Ellie become such a **** This is not the Ellie I remember from the first Last of Us who was mature for her age and understanding.
The first Last of Us had so many appealing side characters like Bill, Henry, Sam, Riley and even David ( who did his job to be terrifying). Some of the new characters from Last of Us part 2 are Abby, Jesse and Dina and I honestly found none of them relatable or appealing. Their dialogues were boring and I wish they had more character development in such a long game (20+hrs btw).

It would be unfair to say that there are no good things in Last of Us part 2.
They introduce new enemy types such as dogs and shamblers. It is nice of them to introduce more enemy types but I honestly wish there were more new enemies.
Graphics also look amazing. It is easily next gen graphics and there's no denying that.
New controls such as prone and jumping. Prone is somewhat useful but jumping might as well not exist if not for some geological puzzles.
Gameplay is almost exactly same as first Last of Us which might be both good and bad. It means there were no improvements but personally for me, I was satisfied with it.

The game looks amazing but that is about it and having such a long playtime doesn't help either, making it such a waste of time. I think this was such a wasted opportunity as a sequel to such an amazing game. The first Last of Us ending was perfect for me and did not need a sequel and I wish I can forget Last of Us Part 2 ever existed.

Some events took place too fast it destroyed any chance to sympathize with certain characters. Some decisions was taken by every character in the game that doesn’t make sense and just felt like the writer couldn’t write anything creative after the 17 minute point. In a game focused on the story of such characters and the development of said characters I can’t get why the writers decide to take this course. The game is a slap in the face of every naughty dog fan, instead of giving us an understandable meaningful well written story, they just gave us a cliché revenge is bad story and contradict themselves by saying bad deeds goes undone while claiming in a post apocalyptic world there is no justice.

First of all, almost every character is so inconsistent:
    - Joel and Tommy look like the most stupid human beings left on Earth, the exact opposite we learnt from TLOU1. telling some bad strangers their real name and their location is so stupid that even a normal person would avoid.
    - Tommy at first seems that he doesn't even want to seek vengeance because Jackson needs protection and doesn't want to lose anyone else…. but later on the game, more precisely at The Farm chapter, he thows **** against Ellie just because she momentanely says she has abandoned her mission of Revenge. WTF? Tommy cares about Ellie a lot and knows how much Joel cared about her…. he would never act like that.
    - The end…. Ellie loses EVERYTHING and Abby nothing…. and it's impossibile not to be disappointed. Thart character is so horrible and also they are trying to replace Joel and Ellie with Abby and Lev. Such a great potential incredibly ruined….

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 5/5 for sound design, graphics and other than Owen the voice acting. Then why the low score? They've kept basically the same gameplay as the original game and although enjoyable it remains a bit clunky. So what keeps you going just like the first one is the game being story-driven, unfortunately the already struggling story goes downhill the moment you start playing as Abby. When you reach what seems to be the final confrontation as Ellie the scene ends and you start playing as Abby, cutting the story when it gets interesting to force me to walk as slowly as possible and watch as many boring cutscenes about character i don't care for is a terrible choice. You quickly realize they're not gonna kill this character with how much effort was put into telling her story in a forced attempt to empathize and mirror some of Ellie's own story as in your face as possible. I just couldn't find myself to care and only kept pushing in the hopes that when I switch back to Ellie I get to kill this b*tch. Except you don't switch to Ellie instead as Abby you beat the **** out of the characters that you actually cared about. Do a timeskip and Ellie and Dina are living on a farm (talk about lesbian stereotypes) when Tommy shows up to tell you he found Abby. Ellie goes after her, loses some fingers and when she's almost drowning Abby to death she has a change of heart... So she spares her just like Abby did the last two confrontations and Abby leaves on the Main Menu boat. Ellie returns home to find her girlfriend is gone and the game ends. The low score is because this mediocre a** story is an insult to the protagonists of the original. Joel is dead and Ellie is living her biggest fear, ending up alone. I get it the boats symbolizes loneliness, but there's not enough here to justify the cruelty which the writers inflict on Ellie. Expand

The good: pretty graphics and solid VO. The bad: terrible what they did to the characters we know and love from the first. If it was an optional route, ala Mass Effect, then it would be fine. Forcing it down our throat doesn't fly and kills the emotional impact of doing bad things.

Also, it should't be part of a review, but with all that has happened, you can't separtate Neil Druckmann's and his group attitude towards "their enemies", enemies that they created with their inmature, imprudent, selfish and even dangerous attitude in the creation of the game and the "message" (ceratinly not one that seeks peaceful end) that they wanted to deliver with the game. It makes you wonder who the "hero" "good guy" "paragon" or the deliverer of the "good message" was wanted to be here, if someone withing the game or someone outside the game.

But the main issue with the game is how they treated some of the most beloved characters and the story telling in the game. They killed Joel off by the hands of the Abby who I never really connected with. Also not to mention the forced identity politics being shoved down your throat. Dina was one of the worscharacters in the game, she felt like a hindrance and ruin the moment for me when walking in Joel's house. For one of the last games to be released on PS4 before its end it takes full advantage of all the capabilities provided to give a fair quality to the graphics and landscapes of the game. The forest scenes, and vibrant landscapes of nature and city ruin give fans a feel of deep immersion in a realistic possibility of the future. Combat was exactly what fans of the serious have come to expect with small instances of similar glitches happening in place in different environments, smashing an infected head into a wall to only then smash air with the blood splatter as well as body of the infected being slightly below the implied area. Weapons crafting and perks were rewarding and if a player was tactical enough to gather resources as they went granted a scaling factor that made the player feel a late game strength as oppose to an early game weakness. All these factors above I believe granted this game its 2 points shown above. However, where the game seems to fail and seems to be the main focus of issue with major fans is the fact that the story seems to be inconsistent with the thought processes of our characters and instead a story the went on a heavy tangent of what fans were expecting. User game play is divided into uncomfortable segments that abruptly stops that storytelling momentum but instead forces fans to wait and engage with a completely different moment with little commit and or care. Fans may at times struggle to even empathize and engage with the story and have moments in which the question their own intentions of continuing. All-in-all, the Last of Us Part II strikes as more of a platform in today's media to connect and question as oppose to a self-fulfilling universe existing in fantasy and awe. It is a game released for them as oppose to fans of the series. Expand

It barely moves the story forward, yet we are dealt with countless more dead. I won't give a higher score for game play, graphics, etc because those are to be expected as a natural part of development for this company. It'd be nothing more than a participation trophy. So my rating is based on the game as a whole. I don't know what happened here but you can feel the tug of war between the characters, world, and story. This amounted to plot holes and an overall feeling of detachment from the game/characters. It broke what I feel is taboo in story telling (though I know it's been done before) of killing a main character. Very sad effort. It also feels like things were being changed at late stages of production. The story here is just really poorly told. Sorry naughty dog but the final game really missed the mark. The first game was such a perfect example of true diversity. Males, females, black, white, young, old, straight and gay, It was all there but it was never shoved down our throats. They were excellent characters in their own right.

It's not worth our money. Not only did they lie to us in the trailers, but they hid the true story from us until the very end, even when it leaked they went into full damage control. I suspect they knew how bad it was. I hope they learn from this. It's just sad. This fanfiction is now canon. And I don't see that ever changing.
