I really wanted to believe everyone was just overreacting when they said the story was bad, but oh boy I didn't know what i was getting myself into. I'm not sure why but it seems the narrative focuses more on getting "shock points" rather than being a good story. I'm not sure why but it seems the narrative focuses more on getting "shock points" rather than being a good story. Characters you love will be brutalized, things that should make sense are done in the opposite way to break expectations and you are forced to go through them because the narrative says so. You often find characters doing horrible, out of place choices that force the plot to keep going, and in the end it does not pay off. Some call this game "misery porn", they wouldn't be wrong, the game does just intend to make you feel bad for the sake of it, even if it makes no sense.

The gameplay is mediocre at best, third person shooter with very basic melee combat and low enemy variety.

The graphics are the only saving point, but no matter how good they can look it does not save the game from its abysmal story and mediocre gameplay.

Really bad. The first game was fun to explore. I loved finding all of the comic books and waiting around to listen to Ellie’s terrible jokes. It was a story about people trying to still be human in a post-apocalyptic world. I could connect with those characters.

The sequel has none of that charm. I just didn’t have fun slogging through the game. It felt like a chore. I felt the same

I felt the same way with the later installments of The Walking Dead game, so maybe it’s just me. Also, they made a really long game, but took out Factions. Not a good trade. They should have cut this in half and made a decent multiplayer mode.

Not only does the game make its main focus chasing after a newly introduced character after it kills the series's most beloved character, it makes you play half the game as her and force feed her story down your throat, it feels incredibly dry and frankly (on the writing end at least) like actual sabotage on the developers part. New players may find the experience boring if not slightly distasteful but i genuinely think a returning player who thinks its not blatantly obvious how the writers are toying with the players emotions and lazily throwing this plot together are deluded. In conclusion the cut scene at the end pretty much describes something that could have been thrown in at the end of the first game and maybe made sense but in the context of this game just describes how much better we would have felt if they had just left it alone. Let me start off by saying they killed the main and one of the most beloved character in the game with the first two hours and you only play as Joel for 5 minutes!!!! Thanks Naughty Dog, you know how to make people happy! I also got the impression they we're trying to make Joel out as this bad guy, I didn't like that. Deep down we all know Joel was a great person. Then they make you play this person called Abby after she kills Joel! I didnt care for her character,I didn't care about her story. I cared about Joel and Ellie's story that's what I waited seven years for this is what happens when you give Neil druckman full control of the game! Plus to make us play as Abby and make us almost kill Ellie! Man that got my blood boiling. Why make your fans go through this I don't understand, are you a so sick deranged person man? The best part of the game were the flashbacks with Ellie and Joel and the graphics. The story was horrible and you're lucky I'm giving it to Stars instead of a zero but I understand a lot of people went through a lot of **** making this game. But, maybe just maybe if you would have Joel go out another way people maybe we would appreciate it game more. This is a spit in the face to me and to true fans of this game. Now the ending was horrible, we get no satisfaction and everything we go all through with are these emotions are for nothing and to have Ellie be all alone and have nothing left in the end is total BS! These are my opinions about the game and does not mean you will feel the same as me. But, you might enjoy it. But for me, I didn't and I encourage you all to play it and have your own experience and judgement.

I've finished the game now and to be honest I did not enjoy myself even half as much as I expected based on the first title. It left me feeling...Disappointed, dirty, and sad and at times even a little upset. :(

For clarity, I did know about the way Naughty Dog and Sony had been acting like a child having a tantrum. They went and tattled to teacher with Youtubers and Twitter users, getting accounts closed/struck (the worst being over a meme...pathetic) so maybe that coloured my perception.

In conclusion, I think I will be extremely wary of Naughty dog in the future, I thank them for TLOU 1 which I loved but this left a sour taste and tbh I'm likely to look at the Xbox rather than Sony for my next gen in the hope they will act more like adults. :(

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a terribly written revenge story with bland new characters and an even worse ending preach an impossible to reach goal.
Abby is not a good character. We are expected to care about her and her struggle, but the game opens up with her killing Joel and hides the reason behind it for half the game. We cannot relate to such a character when her first action is killing an already beloved and established character. From the beginning she is marked as JOEL'S KILLER.
My biggest grievance with this game is Ellie's quest for revenge. She starts off the journey to find and exact justice on Abby, and to her credit, she does a pretty good job of tearing her way through Abby's friends and people just to get to Abby. After she finally reaches Abby who has hurt Ellie and her friends and killed 2 of her friends by now, Ellie is on the verge of killing her only to have an unrelated flashback of Joel and decides to spare her because all of a sudden killing is wrong and will get you nowhere...... that's the stupidest reason ever! She kills hundred of people to reach Abby and decides to let her live for no reason. The game tries to paint this as a humanizing moment but fails on the account that during the entire game we are forced to kill hundreds of people in order to even progress through to the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Based on the story and characters alone, this game deserves a -10 score... Well at least the graphics were pretty fine the atmosphere and sound was good and the gameplay wasn't worse than the first part. But that was it with the positive aspects. The story is a disgrace to the last of us franchise and what makes it even more sad is that the story was probably the strongest part of the first game... The characters feel empty, their actions/ dialogue feel forced and they killed pretty much the only interesting character in the beginning of the game.
So, in conclusion the game is pretty bad. It had a ton of potential and the guys at naughty dog who were responsible for the graphics and level design did a decent job... but "all that glitters is not gold". Honestly sad to see how a terrible story and unlikable characters can ruin an otherwise good game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is such a letdown from such a long development cycle and so much anticipation. Perhaps it was the hype behind it or it was the huge shadow that the first game cast over it, but Neil and the writing team at ND should be one hundred percent ashamed and embarrassed of themselves. The story is weak and based on a lie, Neil said that they wouldn't do something as cheap as kill Joel extra early for that cheap shock factor, but then did it anyways. That part's bad enough already, but the worst part was after playing as the character (Ellie) we actually cared about you FORCE me to play as Abby the one that kills Joel, the other character we care about, for hours and hours on end. The best way to describe the gameplay is uncharted 4 with a little bit of The Last of Us sprinkled in and exclussively on the player. Enemies number in the hundreds, have unlimited ammo, pinpoint accuracy and AI ranges from agitating to full blown idiotic. The gameplay is copy pasted to TLoU pt 2 from the first one, sneak around, stealth enemy until stealth is no longer an option, but of course there are way too many points where Naughty Dog thought it'd be funny to put way to many portions where stealthing is not an option. And when the game doesn't provide enough recources to stabilize the player during firefight after firefight in a SURVIVAL game, it creates frustrating loops of trial and error. Changes were made seemingly to make things worse. Stalkers are completely invisible in listen mode, you can't swap bottle/brick on the fly, stealth sections are made purposefully impossible to complete 100% stealthy and you can't just sneak through entire areas like you could in the first one.

Abby's section(s) are unenjoyable mostly because I spend the whole game wanting this character to die. I don't care who her dad was, I don't care who she loved or **** I don't care what she does or what she did. She will always be the one that killed Joel and I want her to die in the most painful of ways, but Neil and his writing team thought that her killing Joel should be in the opening hours of the game rather than flip it, backstory then kill Joel. This was a lazy, slap in the face so I often spent the massive amount of time playing as her to kill her on purpose.

The areas, in the vein of uncharted 4, are trying to be a little more open and while I appreciate the attempt at making these worlds feel lived in and it definitely makes the environment more interesting than the actual characters or story, those "side quests" can range from pointless to impossibly pointless, being more trouble than they're worth.

The point of this game, according to Neil was hatred and revenge. Major ending spoilers, so after what amounts to 20+ hours of gameplay, literally the last couple levels are Ellie vs the Cartel in order to again track Abby down and kill her. What was it all leading up to? What happens to Ellie? She lets Abby go. When you effectively shoot yourself in the foot at the beginning of the game and then in the other foot forcing me to play as a character I as the player actively HATE and cannot wait to kill and then force this morality on me, it's utter trash and stupid. I WANTED to put her through what she put Joel through worse even. She should've died. I'm supposed to believe that after killing: David, Hunters, infected after infected, countless nameless survivors between this game and the first one, countless wolves, Scarred, Owen and a pregnant woman, that Ellie is suddenly inflicted with morality and can't do this?

So since the story is so weak and the ending is the gaming comparison to a middle finger from Neil what about the gameplay? Well it's dated. The core of it is fine, but it borrows too much from Uncharted 4. It's action packed setpiece after setpiece like it's Uncharted. I'm limited to 8 shells of shotgun ammo vs this Scarred dude who can put 7 arrows into me as I try to rush him, but since Naughty Dog saw this as an affront to their "hide in the tall grass and shank people" loop they wanted they jacked up the enemies aggression and accuracy to 20 and said **** you". Uncharted 4's grass as cover thing worked better because you were invisible when you did it, but since Ellie takes about 3 weeks to slit a dude's throat and read them their blessings you end up getting spotted because she takes the better part of a month to kill one person. The infected are dealt with similarly, the Shambler is a nusciance forcing stealth into open combat, just don't bother. The "boss" in Abby's section was utterly idiotic. And Naughty dog is to scared to mingle human and infected enemies together for more than two or three sections. And to ensure you're forced to clear all enemies before proceeding you have to hold triangle through all doors. At least the graphics are nice to look at sorta.

If Neil was going for a game that focused on hatred, congrats, mission accomplished. We hate your game.

Sadly are voices will be silenced and another game development team like the previous ones before it will choose to ignore the community and continue with their self interjections to the game while ignoring the story itself. But I think Joel deserved better. Video game industry needs to know that we usually get connected with characters and their choices and last thing we want to see is for that character to die. I don't care about all this agenda thing going around on internet. Don't care main character is lesb or trans, till the time it's a good game with a good story. Last of us 2 compared to Last of us 1 is just plain garbage. I can't believe that both developed by the same studio. Ellie goes on rampage, kills everyone, just to let Abby go, that was like a 10/10 facepalm moment for me. Writer needs to sit down and think what exactly he is trying to communicate with this story. Only character I cared about was Ellie, writer completely failed to make me feel anything about any other character. And why on earth we are forced to play Abby, after she butchered Joel, last thing we need is to play as her. I just can't believe that this game is coming from Naughty Dog, one of the best studio we have. How could they even think this is a great story. It has so many flaws.

Because of the bond its' characters created with the player, how every single action they took in the game resonated with the player, made them feel as if they are the one responsible for taking care of Ellie with their lives on the line.

I wonder if the studio deliberately wanted the players to feel horrible as they played through this, wanted their customers, some like me who waited 5+ years to get their hands on this, to suffer and want to put the controller down?

If that was indeed their goal, I do believe they succeeded. To me, The Last of Us is purely a masterpiece - of course there may be optimizations needed for the gameplay, but the unforgettable narrative made up for everything. It tells the ugly yet beautiful story of a father figure who had lost it all before, bond to this sweet girl, giving him hope when all seemed lost. Now all of that is taken from us, and the loyal players are left absolutely numb. Aside from the top-notch graphics and soundtrack TLOU2 has, I am left utterly heartbroken and disappointed.

I usually do not like sequels, because most of them simply ruin the magic of the original sometimes, and TLOU2 certainly did that for me.

The game is completely pointless. Gameplay and graphics mean nothing, such things can be enjoyed in many games. When you buy a game and even more when you buy a sequel, the story and development of the characters are the heart of the content. The 2 most loved characters, not only from this game but from this generation of games, have seen no development. At the end, there is nothing to be happy about (nor is it understandable). If you just want something new to go through just pick another game.

P.S. Critic reviews are literal garbage, the only decent thing in this game are graphics, no masterpiece whatsoever, just expectations and hype.

The fact that the entire story is contingent on retconning established lore instantly makes the story a failure.

Other than Jesse, the game also fails to make the new characters likeable. Dina feels like she’s just there as the token lesbian partner. Abby is just an all around badly written character. Her motivations are cheap and the game’s attempt to make you sympathize with her falls flat. Lev’s character arc is a hamfisted sermon of identity politics that does not make sense in the context of the post-apocalyptic world.

A lot of people have compared this game to The Last Jedi and Game of Thrones: Season 8 in terms of how badly they butchered their characters. While these comparisons are apt, allow me to make another. The Last of Us 2 is a marginally better version of The Order: 1886. Both have great graphics, sound effects, and music. However, they suffer from an underwhelming gameplay loop and their stories are badly written. Actually, I would argue that The Order: 1886’s story is more digestible because at least it does not retcon established characters.

Nearly every major story beat in TLOU2 comes by way of uncharacteristic stupidity and incompetence from the cast of generally unlikable, charmless characters; or by way of outlandish coincidence. One particularly galling recurring contrivance is Ellie's plot armour. The antagonists of the game have multiple chances to off her, but instead let her live for no conceivable reason, instead tying her to a table or some other cliche while they wait to be killed. Ellie herself has matured from a quirky, endearing, sightly rebellious teen into the personification of wallpaper paste. In fact, most of the characters are as bland as a bread sandwich. Frankly, the game as a whole is devoid of any fun or personality, with the exception of a few scenes featuring what made the first game work so well: the relationship between Ellie and Joel. These are few and far between, however. Separating herself from the bland cast of characters is the despicable Abby. Abby makes for a pretty good villain. You hate her. She's a mean, disgusting psychopath (her breathing like a pig in heat was particular repulsive during a certain scene). The problem with this is that she is also the second playable character. ?????? Moving on. The game's technical achievements and solid gameplay loop save it from being a complete failure. The game is undoubtedly the pinnacle of what a game can look like on the current hardware. The facial animations in the first game blew me away and the exact same is true in the sequel. The gameplay in the first game split people into 2 camps. Either you found it a terse game of cat and mouse which could explode into a frantic and brutal melee after a single slip up (like me), or you thought it was something you had to get through to reach the next cut scene. Well, it's essentially the same here but with a bit more going on. Not a lot more to be honest, but I think enough to feel somewhat distinct. Basically, if you liked playing the first one, you'll probably like playing this one. One gripe I did have was the unnecessary jump mechanic. You jump like an anvil in treacle, missing the mark often. When you do eventually make a jump, you will often cling onto icy metal or perform some other improbable feat of superhuman upper body strength. A fairly minor quibble but one I felt like mentioning. There's plenty more to the story and the writing I could complain about but I feel like this review has gone on far too long already.

To sum up, the game is a jarring, unpleasant experience that I would not recommend. If you're thinking of picking it up, watch the first couple of hours first and then make an informed decision. I hope I've articulated why the game is in fact bad, for anyone who thinks that it's just being review bombed by sexist alt-right scum or whatever. It's a sad day for Naughty dog fans.

A beautiful walking sim, not a great game, disappointed with story and gameplay, all puzzles are ridiculously simple, nothing innovative or new, skip playing and watch a film instead

Before the game came out, they made an interview where someone, the co-director, i think or even Neil, said ''you dont need to kill any dog, you can avoid it'' , well that was a lie, i would ask a REFUND for this if you dont like any of that.

    MAJOR Spoilers below

Moving to the game, besides Joel's decisions not making any sense when he was alive or Ellie's decision at the end by not killing the villain bcs ''OH MY GOD, Joe- oh well... that took 1 sec but now i remember, revenge bad'' was stupid after the fact she kills hundreds of people that werent involved with Joel's death directly, if she thought she ended a revenge cycle, well.... BAD NEWS, those people she killed have probably friends that would do the same thing as her, so A POINTLESS and DUMB decision, which is the fault of the writer of the game.

Another thing i want to criticise is WHY would Neil want to self insert to spit on Joel's dead body and having sex with the villain + having a card where he thinks he is smart.
It just made me think that there was some **** message against the fans of the 1st game or even the ex-writers, it was disrespectful.

The only thing i can praise is the graphics and gameplay, so congrats for those that worked on that section, NOT the writers.

The last of us 2 does many things right (the enviorment is top noch, the music is beautiful and the animations are some of the best ive seen in a video game) but fails to deliver the very thing it should be based on (story with engaging plot and gameplay that can be called mediocere at Best)

First time ever on this site.

I just want to say that i LOVED The last of us 1 and i was so hyped for this game even after the leak and bad comments. But after i've played it through i feel empty and angry. Did i wait this long for this butchered story? The last 3 hours of the game felt drawn out and the ending? Sigh..

It's Mass Effect Andromeda all over again..

Jumbled up timeline (reducing the score by 4 for this as it was a colossal screw up). I dont care about the people who were killed, give me the backstory before not after they die; I would care more and be less annoyed by the writing. The puzzles, just trash them pls. The combat, try something new after 7 years pls. The jump button is one of the worst implemented I have seen for a while.
The atmosphere and visuals were cool, same with the music and voice acting. The writing was awful for a naughty dog title for a while but it hit its stride at some points (especially flashbacks for Ellie and Abby). SO mediocre, I wish i hadnt played it tbh. Not worthy of the name in the slightest,

Story is very weak and ridiculous. It look likes that ND killed Joel to have a excuse for making TLOU2.
Joel’s characterizations is unbelievably stupid, he died for giving ND a reason to make TLOU2 and Ellie didn’t get her revenge at the end ! We played for hours, she went through hell and didn’t get the revenge, what a cliché!
I’m very sorry to say this, i absolutely loved LOU 1 but the the only use LOU2 has is for creating memes.
    Don’t buy.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
