This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, I don't even know where to start with this game. I guess I understand why teh critics praised this game in the first place, and now you have people behaving furiously and leaving a negative review for a good reason.
People are mad because what they've done with the story in this sequel. If this was a new IP, if this had nothing to do with The last of us in general, I think people might love this game for its interesting approach and never-seen-before content, I'd say now.
But since this is a direct sequel to one of the, if not the best video-game of all time, or shall I just say "masterpiece" of a game, then you need to understand why thousand and thousand of people are extremely disappointed. Upset. Sad, even depressive.
The graphics, the deep details, the environments, the cutscenes, everything looks top notch. Top quality. It seriously doesn't get any better than this.
I think Naughty Dog has done a marvelous job regarding this job, my hat goes off to them, but it doesn't mean anything if the story is really, really bad which it is. Sadly it is. It's so bad it actually makes Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 looks like it's Ocarina of Time. It's just how bad the plot, the packing is. And this constantly switching to characters and the flashback scenes between Ellie and Joel.
There's this one scene when Joel surprises Ellie for her birthday, where he took her to a Dinosaur museum. Just imagine how absolutely astonishing this sequel would've been if the focus was on Ellie and Joel with a whole different story.
I don't mind Abby being there, what I do mind is ND pushing their political agenda in this game.
If you loved The Last Jedi, Game of Thrones season 8, there's a big chance that you're going to appreciate this game.
However, if you loved everything about the first The last of us, then there is no chance you are going to love, let even alone to "like" this game at all. Unless you buy everything ND related, then that's your own choice.
However, I'm giving this game a 2 out of 10 just because of the beautiful graphics.
The rest is just a sad, depressing, dark world of a video-game where it's forcing the player to do sadistic things. It's a nihilistic game.
Save your 60$ and get Ghost of Tsushima instead.

Originally I was going to post some trans-phobic joke for **** and to see if twitter lefties would screen-shot it an effort to make an argument, but I'm not doing that, I'm going serious.
I own a PS2, 3 and 4, I got to play a bit of the original TLOU in PS3, then lost it, years later, the remastered version was free for PS+ users, so I bought it, and I loved it, the game got me truly enthusiastic for the sequel.
Then I saw the leaks back in April, and my absolute hype for the game, turned into absolute hate.
I didn't and I still don't care if Abby is a mutilated 41%-ass individual, or if Ellie likes to scissor with women whose actresses got their boobs nerfed, what enraged me is how dirty they did Joel, a character that everyone fell in love with in the previous game.
Some time later, I kinda got over it, but I still wasn't going to play it, and when people got the game early VIA pre-order, I got even more goddamn enraged.
They torture the main characters like the absolute worst villains in history, Tommy gets divorced, one-eyed and limping, mad about the fact that Ellie promised him to kill that woman and now is hesitating about it, Ellie herself hallucinates about Joel's dead body and with how she couldn't save him, which inspires her to finish the job and fight Abby on an even fight where both of them are emaciated as hell and she DOESN'T KILL HER BECAUSE OF A FLASHBACK OF JOEL PLAYING THE GUITAR (Which absolutely contradicts what she said about Joel killing Abby if Ellie was the one killed and not him), then the game ends with Dina making a meme out of herself and taking the kids, and Ellie making a failed attempt to play the guitar with three fingers on her left hand, she's alone, she did Tommy dirty by having the chance of finishing the job, and HESITATING about it, and she made a complete fool out of herself by killing a bunch of people trying to find Abby and NOT finishing off the person you killed so much to find, ending the game with an unsatisfying climax, tbh it would have been slightly less bad if Abby just finished Ellie in the theater.
Good job, Neil, you got what you wanted, a game that literally no mentally stable person likes, and you are getting what you deserve because of it, I hope mocaping that scene with your self insert banging Abby was worth it.
I'm giving it a 2 only because of the REALLY slightly improved gameplay, and I'm being really forgiving with it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow, so much controls for the reviews huh. I've been wanting to post my review for days but it didn't get submitted through as i've been giving it 2 stars. Apparently metacritics only receives positive reviews, the negative ones will be deleted. Review bombing they said, but only fake positive reviews get to stay and negative reviews are getting deleted. It's really unfair for those ppl like me who wanted/had to voice out our opinions about how bad the game was as our opinions were getting rejected or deleted or treated as review bombing. Guess we can never trust metacritic reviews anymore, its all fake and well-controlled. So disappointed.

Well, apparently all the companies weren't being honest with their reviews (or maybe they're paid to do it). But what matters is the reviews from the customers or users themselves, we are the ones who bought the game and played it. As u can see, there's a big rating gaps between the company and the users. Some ppl who are defending the game will say the reviews were getting bombed, but from what I see, there are a tons of fake positive reviews that are written by the "users" as well. Just because the rating is so low doesn't mean the ratings are fake. We are just giving an honest review about what we think the game is worth for.

We hated this sequel not because of we are some kind of narrow minded or homophobic. It doesn't have anything to do with that. We don't care about the sexuality of the characters or whether the characters are trans or whatsoever. We just simply do not like the story lines itself, its utterly trash as compared to the part 1. Well, one of the things that I DISLIKED the most on the game is the Joel's quick death. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying im opposed to the Joel's death, it was just so badly plotted that the main protagonist had to die in the first 2 hours of gameplays (we didn't even get to play much of him). It was an UNDESERVING death IMO. This makes everyone hated Abby so much and started making fun of her appearance by saying she's trans who has unnatural enormous big arms (the only way to unleash the rage upon her). Whats even worse is we were getting forced to play as her in the later of the game after what she'd done to Joel and Jesse for another 1/2 of the gameplay which is equivalent of 10 or more hours like WTH nobody is interested to know her pathetic back stories anyway. This sequel felt like a filler to me, everything is so dragged out. Especially the Abby's part where she wanted to find Owen who apparently turned against WLF, then trying to do some good deeds by saving Lev and Yara who we didnt even care about, beating Ellie up and back to finding Firefly. Every new characters in this sequel is just like random people on the street who you'd nvr remember them, none of the new characters have bonded with us like Joel and Ellie did in the first part. Maybe the new only character i sorta cared about was Jesse, the rest is just meh. At first i didn't even know who Danny, Mel, Leah, Nora, Manny was. Every time had to go back to the scene where Joel getting beating up scene to see their face clearly. None of them were memorable, they just faded away like that. This has already proven the game had failed to tell the story and its poorly executed. The ending was the worst, where Ellie ended up losing everything she had, Joel, Dina, JJ, Jesse, and she cant even play her guitar which was the only thing that made her felt connected to Joel because she lost 2 fingers fighting Abby face to face meanwhile Abby gets away with Lev and live happily. It just drives me crazy to think about it after everything Ellie had been through everything, killed everyone who got in the way, losing her friend on her revenge trip and ended up deciding to save Abby and let go of her. What's the logic behind this. I dont get it. The game is called as "The Last of Us" for a reason, its all about Joel and Ellie and this sequel decided to break everything into pieces. Speechless.

I remember the first part was a masterpiece and now it's ruined by the part 2 thanks to NaughtyDog and Neil. How i wish the game ended in part 1 and part 2 was never happened. The only thing that impressed me was the graphic designs, the stunning sceneries. Gotta give it to those employees who had put their heart & soul into it. It was such a shame seeing one of my favourite game of all time getting ruined like that.

P.S I've never created an account before to write a review for a game, but i did it for this game cause i was so entirely pissed off by this crap.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m sorry, what?! Am I even playing the same game?! How has this gotten such glowing reviews from so many gaming outlets? I’m going to go into why this makes no sense:

First, this is coming from a place of someone who has the original game in my top three best of all time. I came into this from a place very forgiving of mistakes because I wanted so bad to see more of this world. What I got instead is such a dumpster fire of plot holes and bad writing that I cannot get past that.

They basically took the best parts of the first and these characters we loved and mashed them into the ground (yes intentional wording). For the sake of being edgy and trying to subvert expectations. The other thing is maddening is how hard they try virtue signaling. I am all about more representation in video games, but this is so hamfisted it goes to only serves to make the lgbtq community look worse in my opinion.

What this plays out to be is a long winded, poorly written, angsty revenge plot with semi-servicable gameplay. Also are we seriously going to end the game with a QuickTime event? Don’t even get me started on how horrid the ending is and how hypocritical and against the character’s ingrained themes and motives it was on a writing level, but seriously?

The only reason I gave this at least a 2 is because the gameplay is serviceable ( it doesn’t really do much different from the original game) and because the world crafting and art design is extremely masterfully done. This is easily one of the most gorgeous games to look at I have ever played.

In conclusion, I feel extremely sorry for those who worked on this game to have people come in and completely tarnish what they poured their hearts and souls into the art assets and set pieces with horrible writing. Sony, you would be wise to do some cleaning out of naughty dog in its current iteration or I do not see things going well in the future. I have lost all trust in the current decision making at the studio level.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 is visually and graphically stunning. The gameplay is serviceable at best. However with a game like this, the story is the most important part to me. In The Last of Us 2 the story is a disaster and is completely disrespectful to its predecessor. The plot is riddled with plot holes and contrivance. The ending is extremely unsatisfying as it attempts to preach a message about revenge instead of giving the player what they want. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The ultimate scene that kicks off the events of the entire game relies on completely retconning Joel and Tommy's characters. Throughout the first game, you see these two always being wary of any stranger. Joel even went as far as to attempt to run over a dude with a car because he knew that guy was faking his injury.

Neil Druckmann comes along and goes, "Nope, let's just throw the entire canon away". He had Joel and Tommy suddenly do a complete 180 on their established characters. They tell a complete group of strangers where their hideout was and Joel told them his real name AFTER THE STRANGERS LOCKED THE DOOR IN THE CABIN.

What's worse, is the game pathetically tries to get you to sympathize with the character who killed Joel. That attempt fell completely flat when we find out what motivated her to hunt him down: Joel killed the doctor, Abby's dad, who was about to do life-ending surgery on Ellie, who was shown to be an incompetent piece of garbage in the first game. That's right, the game wants you to feel sorry for Abby because her piece of s**t dad was killed for attempting to end Ellie's life without her consent.

Gameplay is only marginally better than the story. It works, but it's nothing special. The sequel doesn't do much to evolve the mechanics from the 1st game. But if you want to do that, then you need to engage the player in other ways. Well, the game already failed with the story. How about enemy variety and behavior? Sad to say, the enemy AI is very questionable. You could be in their near direct vision and they would still not notice you. You could kill someone with an arrow and his/her companion would not have heard the sound.

The problem is the pacing and spacing out of the gameplay loop. The first game did a good job spacing out the 'sneak around, gather supplies, kill enemies' phases with puzzles. The sequel throws out the puzzles entirely. As a result, you're left to wash, rinse, and repeat again and again and again for hours.

Overall, the story is a 0/10 for completely failing barely 2 hours in. I'm sorry, but if you have to rely on retcons to jumpstart the plot, then that disqualifies the entire story. It's like how I don't need to read an entire essay if the thesis is completely garbage. The gameplay, at least, is serviceable, so that's why I'm giving the game a 2/10.

The AI is so legendarily garbage you can pretty much just walk up to it at times. The story pacing is a mess. We are introduced to characters one after another with no time to develop any kind of feelings for them and they are killed off just as quickly. With such a rapid fire of companion deaths it really challenges the disbelief that OUR character just happens to be the chosen survivor of each encounter. Every attempt to make you 'feel' something or shock you/subvert your expectations is the dictionary definition of hamfisted. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sad and disappointed. I loved the first game so much and it feels like the sequel just screwed everything over. After all the leaks I had at least hoped that the relationships between the characters would keep me going - but it didn't.

Beloved characters acted completely out of character, best example Joel's death early into the game that was caused by him walking into a group of strangers and giving them his name - which seems so weird when you think about the Joel we met in the first game.

The game was filled with unnecessary, very graphic violence and torture p*rn at some points. I remember someone saying that this game is "rarely any fun" and that's right - the game isn't fun at all, it's depressing. And not in a good way because most of the characters in the game are so uninteresting to the story that you don't particularly mourn them. It's just boring.

The graphics are of course outstanding and the acting is very good, even though some dialogue seems very forced and unnatural. I liked the flashback scenes with Joel - this is what I would've wanted more. More Joel, more hope. But all I was left with was Ellie, left alone by her friends and her love, missing 2 fingers, letting the one who killed Joel live and going off into the wild.

I really hope they don't make Part 3, I don't think they can fix this.

Joel's mastery of survival is reduced to novice mistakes for plot contrivance. There's plot holes galore. Yes, their art team beautifully realizes a post-apocalyptic vision for America as we'd expect from Naughty Dog. I'd say the namely minimalist soundtrack mostly gets the job down, although it isn't quite as memorable as LoA1.

In the end, it's ridiculous because they say that if you dislike this game, you must be an evil bigot! The Last of Us 2 falla de forma ESPECTACULAR a la hora de continuar la historia y de que esta tenga una pizca de coherencia con la original, con personajes tomando decisiones increíblemente fuera de su personalidad, y con los directores prefiriendo la senda del "shock value" en vez de una buena historia. The fine amount of detail in every little thing from the sound of your foot steps, the sounds the clickers make, your victims, etc. is highly impressive! It's clear a lot of hard work was put into this game to make it look, sound and feel like a masterpiece.

CONS: This story-driven game lacks a story and was not thought out well - it feels like the people who made this never played the first Last Of Us! The infected/zombies take a back seat which is a huge disappointment! The characters act out of character in major ways. Unrealistic character aspect in a post-apocalyptic world. Some of the characters you come across aren't exactly relatable or likable, others are just boring and don't stand out. Some of the dialogue is boring, cringe-worthy and pathetic. A plot hole around every corner. The overall message the game is trying to send is somewhat lost 3/4 of the way through.

If you're a Last Of Us fan I'd recommend playing it....just wait for a price drop/sale or rent it.
However, as a fair warning.... I'd advise to NOT step into this game with the first Last Of Us in mind or thinking it as a Last Of Us sequel. Best way I can explain that is by saying The Last Jedi wasn't really a Star Wars movie and you shouldn't approach it thinking it was going to be one. At least that's my personal opinion on the subject.
    Happy Gaming!

EDIT: Originally I gave this a 4.... having just completed the game I have to drop it to a 2. Just plain awful story. Some parts are fun, the rest has this "okay, well I've already started it ....might as well finish it" feel to it.

The main thing about this game was the plot and they destroyed it. They left the game full of flawed scripts, it was bad. Unfortunately spoiled my gameplay. More than once they forget or do not mention things about the first game to try to direct the public's view to what they like. I see it as a lazy script, which plays low to try to thrill us and, in the end, feels empty (as empty as the characters by the way).
In addition, you are forced to play with characters without charisma, in an attempt to empathize with them, which did not convince me at all. My distaste only intensified (do you really want to paint this character as a nice person after she brutally tortured someone who saved her live? Really?!).
I saw people defending history based on politics and for me the question is not this, it is bad writing, bad plot. It is sad to see how much work they had done developing this game to be wasted by bad script.
The graphics and soundtrack are beautiful, but for me beauty is only skin deep.
I am really sad to have waited seven years for this and to have spent 12.38% of my country's average salary for it.
I do not think this game deserves a zero, for all the work that have been done. But unfortunately, I can't give a higher score for such a disappointing game.

I was excited to see where these characters are going next and what conflicts they will face? Without saying spoilers, my expectations were subverted. The decisions naughty dog made in the last of us are admirable and brave, more studios should take bold choices with their art. Just because they are brave and admirable however, does mean they are good. TLOU breaks down the depth and resources of the actors and characters and turns them into 2 dimensional figures and they are, the saddest thing for any high calibre art, predictive. Once my expectations were "subverted", the rest of the game fell neatly into place, it was a dark, bleak and non redeeming mess. The writing staff and ND must have such a low opinion of it's player base that they feel this game is a necessary commentary on vengeance. It is not. There were themes of forgiveness, and the ending reinforced them, however they were drowned out by the loss of credible characters and the needless vengeance plot that i had to think very hard that they were there. If you loved the characters and story of TLOU 1, don't buy this game, some stories don't need conclusions.

But I gotta say, the graphics are top notch, the gameplay got slightly improved, more skills to unlock, Ellie is more agile, improved AI, new infected enemies which is cool.

The ending is just...meh, it was all for nothing.

The Last of Us 2 is a wasted potential, NAUGHTYDOG could have ended the PS4 generation with a bang instead of this wet fart.

To keep it short i will just write some of the things that i didn't like at all.

I didn't like the forced brutal moments of the game that where there just for the sake of having something shocking. I felt like that they exchanged characters value for the shocking moments. There were also some really awkward unnecessary private moments that cheapened the characters value even further.

I didn't like that unlike the previous game, the drama is way too artificial. The characters just weren't convincing enough, both in writing and voice acting.
Same with the story of the game. I was expecting to see a lot of moments with our beloved characters from the previous game, now that they have grown wiser with the time, unfortunately that wasn't the case (I can't expand more on this without spoiling things).

About the sound i will say the soundtrack is not memorable but passable. Voice acting felt a little dry but that may have been due to the script being so stiff and artificial.

As far as gameplay goes, it wasn't anything revolutionary or new, i will just say it did the job. i just wish there were fewer QTEs, in any case this is a story driven game, and that's where the game didn't deliver.

Then I finally played it and it was a major disappointment to me. The one thing I must say I love about this game are the visuals, they are gorgeous, along with most of the sound design as well. The gameplay is still relatively the same, not merely as polished or improved as it should be. Most of the unique movement puzzles that were in the first game have been replaced by practically just the same exact thing. The AI is pretty bad to for the most part, half the time I could just walk right by the zombies of this games universe. Now the thing that made this game’s predecessor great was its story. That is completely absent from this game. This game takes a huge dump on all your old favorite characters, giving them stupid deaths, or just making them completely stupid and simply annoying. Most of the new characters as well, especially the golf girl, are bad as well. All though there were a few new characters that I enjoyed. The ending is one of the most unsatisfying things ever in a game in my opinion, the game repeatedly tries to teach you the cycle of violence and fails to do so in the most important part. The game tries switching things up a bit but also fails at that, characters don’t have a good backstory nor something relatable to make you feel for them.

Gameplay although changed slightly has an awful AI system (even when set to hard) and sometimes too long segments that make you actually feel that you want to finish it as soon as possible, it also doesn’t help that it is intertwined with the badly written story.

The 7 years it took to make this game were evidently not used to make a better story, and the smoke and mirrors tactic naughty dog employed to trick people into buying the game was an egregious act that no major media outlet is covering because the only thing publications such as IGN care about are brownie points and being in the good graces of naughty dog and sony. Apparently receiving early review copies are the only thing that keeps games like these on top, but take a second and think about it for yourself: perfect 10/10's, 100/100's ? Something shouldnt feel right here for you. A 10/10 is a perfect game, and while absolutely no game is perfect, this one is far from it. This game is nothing like the first, and anyone going into this game based on the previous will be extremely disappointed. Neil Druckman and Naughty Dog severely under performed and might have possibly killed one of the most beloved franchises and main characters in gaming. The graphics are incredible and the gameplay is slightly better than the previous with new additions to help your survivability, but the story is the equivalent of a car crash. I saw all of the leaks before release and still thought that there was a chance that playing would change the context and perspective and I was correct. It changed it so negatively that I couldn’t look away as one of my favorite franchises was butchered before my eyes. Neil Druckmann stated that this game is about hate and I fully understand that now. I hated the game being leaked, I hate the direction they took the story, I hate the character decisions that seemed out of place, I hate the reviewers giving mysterious positive reviews claiming it’s a masterpiece and I hate myself for buying this game. One point for graphics and another for gameplay. Nothing else deserved it. Also, what kind of revenge story (which is played out already) ends with no revenge for the main character? And by main character, I’m referring to one of the two people we looked forward to playing as, not bland and boring Abby. Expand

And if you kill him, give him a respectful death, not a random one from a new random character we can only hate. Ellie doesn't even get revenge at the very end of the game. What was the point of ALL of this? There is no vengeance. This is an insult to the fans, story wise. Expand

When the story of a video game takes precedence over gameplay, it's unfortunate to see that instead, of developing beloved characters known to everyone, they simply decide to get rid of them in the worst possible ways. Literally and figuratively. Video game news outlets are calling this in 2020 "bold storytelling" I call it sjw **** Expand

If you destroy the story with which we fell in love with the first game, do it smarter. Do they think they are original for doing what they did? You can have the best graphics and gameplay, but if you want to generate forced empathy you will not achieve ANYTHING.

The game had amazing graphics and decent gameplay. The storyline was an atrocity though. If it was a standalone game it would have been a better experience. Beautiful. Great details. I do not expect lesser given it's reputation as a triple A title. In this day and age, other than WWE 2K, graphcs should be stunning.

    Gameply:
Moving mechanics remained the same with left/right strafing, right analog to control direction you are heading.
    Crafting is similar.
Dodging mechanic are welcome but mediocore at best. Just a series of quicktime events
There's a jump button, but it's basically useless. My grandma can jump better than the in-game charcter.

One reviewer claimed that it's the "Best Stealth game" of all time. (Laughs in Metal Gear). On the pH scale of 1-14, stealth is 14 cause it's very basic. Many times when I'm behind a cover and an enemy is approaching, I receive the prompt button before he's even close. Ellie pops and jumps a distance to grab the enemy for a stealth kill. This looks completely unrefined to me and is light years away from what other stealth game has achieve.

    Storyline:
Boy oh boy, what a mess. Politics aside, this game completely subvert your expectations. We understand Joel is not exactly a saint but ND seems determined on schooling us with "cycles of revenge" storyline. It's as cliche as it sounds and everything is done for shock value, edgy for the sake of being edgy.. The first few hours just renders everything the first game built useless. This is just plain unwise given that there's so much emotional attachment to the game charcters. Imagine having Arthur Morgan die in RDR2 and then you play as Micah Bell, how would you feel?

There's no way to root for the new protagonist at all.

Metacritic would probably filter out many "0" as review bombs, but if video game journalist can freely give 10/10 as they please, why can't us consumer?

This is a game hatefully crafted in order to disgust and dismay all fans of the original game by killing a beloved original character in an absolutely ridiculous fashion and then forcing the player to play as the murderer of what was probably one of their favorite characters from the first game.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!! It is a relentlessly bleak and depressing hate-letter to America, to gamers, and to fans of the first game. Go spend your money on something fun and entertaining rather than this preachy, hamhanded woke trash. It only even gets a 2 from me because of the visuals, which are admittedly stunning, but loses all other points for the reasons listed above.

The graphics of the game looks insanely good and the attachment to details is mind blowing. It’s fun to explore all the locations and learn something new about this world. The gameplay is only okay, nothing new and nothing bad about it. The game has some flashbacks to the first game. They are very interesting and work very well. That’s all the positive I can say about the game.

Most of the characters behaves like the world is fine and the apocalypse is not a big problem. Some of the characters are very unbelievable and bad written. You can feel the political agenda in every second of interaction with this character.
I didn’t like the story of the game. There are many sad and intensive moments but overall I just didn’t care. What they did to Joel is bull***t. I can’t imagine, that anyone who played the first game would feel okay with it.
So the story gets 0 Points, it’s nothing like the story of the first game.

Overall I think the game is okay for people who didn’t play the first game, although they wouldn’t understand many of the little details. I didn’t enjoy the game, especially when it forced me to play as Abby for many hours, I hated it. The exploration of the world was fun and I enjoyed the graphics and all the little details. But the story and the characters killed the game for me, so I don’t recommend it to the fans of the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR - The critic reviews are shill/paid reviews... IGNORE THEM. This game is an absolute dumpster fire! Don't take my word for it, go watch gameplay videos on YouTube (from real gamers, not the shills), before you decide to buy--you'll be glad you did.

Okay, so what's the long version...

The Last of Us (what we now call "part 1") was an amazing game! I purchased a PS4 just for that game (I wait for the remastered version and it was totally worth it)! The game had excellent graphics, fantastic sound (effects and music), and absolutely solid gameplay. However, where The Last of Us really shined was in the fantastic story line. The best games are the ones which make you feel like a participant in a really good movie, and that's exactly what The Last of Us did. You really cared about Joel and Ellie, and couldn't wait to find out what happens next.

    We got the answer.

So, let's be fair and start with the GOOD.
Like part 1, the sequel provides beautiful graphics and level environments. Likewise, sounds is also good. The gameplay is also still solid with some decent improvements that add to the game. And that's about it.

    Now for the BAD.
    [SPOILERS]
As I said, the story is EVERYTHING. For about the first couple of hours, the store was good. Then, a train wreak happens. Joel is killed in one of the stupidest scenes I've ever seen! After saving Abby from a horde of zombies and returning her home, they all walk into a back room and all of a sudden, Abby shoots him in the leg. She then has her men put a tourniquet on his leg, and then immediate proceeds to beat him to death with a golf club in front of Ellie (yes, it's as stupid as it sounds!). It was like one of the devs was watching Game of Thrones re-runs and decided they wanted to have a shocking and unexpected death scene for a main character because... reasons. And Joel, the guy who went through heII and back to save Ellie, now just sits there and takes it. It was little more than shock-porn and leaves the player rolling their eyes and wondering if they even want to continue playing. The story is a complete mess from that point forward, and the player is often pigeon-holed into doing stuff (often stuff that they really don't want to do) just to move the story forward.

And this is why the game is such a complete failure. In the first game, you cared about Joel and Ellie and wanted to see what happens next. The gameplay and story were compelling and, like a great book, you were hard-pressed to put it down. The one, however, burns all that to the ground within the first two hours of gameplay. You quickly get to a point where you simply don't care about the story anymore. Joel died pointlessly, and now Ellie is on a quest for revenge (honestly, there was more depth in John Wick's quest for vengeance!). So what happens? She kills everyone involved EXCEPT Abby... she let's her live in what can only be described as a giant middle-finger to fans of the first game.

And that's assuming you actually play to the end. I would be willing to bet that most people will only play a few hours, and then never finish the game because, when they think about firing it up again, they are like, "Meh."

I just really loved TLOU 1 and think this is a total disservice to the characters ND created and an insult to its fans.. I will say the gameplay is good and griping, I really like how violent and real it feels, but I play games like these due to their story and frankly it sucks.. Joel character is just an afterthought. As fans we loved Joel and ellie so it's a disservice to him just to kill him for the sake of it, without taking into account what he means for us. I didn't really liked playing as Abby.. It should have been a dlc tbh.. The ending is also really really bad.. I wouldn't recommend this game for a fan of the first one.. Expand

They took a universe that people fell in love with thanks to the characters and their relationships, and just decided to make a sequel that relies on shock value to keep the player going on with the game, rather than simply telling a good story. Don't get me wrong, you're allowed to make a depressing story and still have it be a good one, but this is definitely NOT the case. They butchered everything that got built in the past 7 years by a very passionate community just to subvert their expectations and get those few moments of shock, at the cost of murdering something so beloved by many. But on top of being so offensively unkind to long time fans, the game is also littered with awful writing, character interactions that make zero sense for a human, and honestly very boring sections of gameplay. When it comes to the "sjw" controversies, I believe that most people would agree in saying that representing LGBT+ people in a videogame isn't a problem (and also nothing new, if you played the first game). The real issue emerges when you do that, and use it as a scapegoat for all criticism, every negative opinion gets pushed aside without even thinking about it because "they're just mad about the lgbt characters".

Technically speaking this game looks and sounds fantastic, among the very best I've ever witnessed on a console. But all of that hard work gets completely ruined by some truly awful decision making by the writers of the story. And since this game isn't self contained, it sadly manages to affect my memories of the first game, which I have loved dearly since 2013.

Everybody, new fans, long time fans, should absolutely avoid this game because it will only affect you negatively and I really wish I could've known this before buying it.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
