This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Positives:
    - Incredible acting
    - Best graphics of the generation
    - Downtown Seattle is basically an open-world
    - Despite their best efforts, Joel & Ellie are still the best character
    - Flashbacks of Ellie & Joel are the best part of the game
    - Combat & stealth feels amazing
    - Infected are a lot scarier than Part 1
    - Outstanding depth and amount of things to customise
    - Handful of amazing action-packed and nerve-racking missions

    Negatives: | Here we go...
    - Joel would never go into a groups house just outside Jackson and give his name away knowing there are hundreds trying to hunt and kill him. Nearly 30 years in the apocalypse you’d think Tommy would be a bit smarter than to give away Jackson’s location, home to hundreds.
    - How could you kill off your most beloved character by caving his head in with a golf club? Arthur Morgan is a great example of how to kill a loved and well developed character, sacrificing himself for someone he loves. In Joel’s case that should’ve been Ellie.
    - There is little to no character development between Ellie and Dina.
    - You’re forced to play as Abby, the one who murders Joel for over half the game inan attempt to want to make you like her, I know, what the ****
    - You’re once again forced to play as Abby, but this time you have to try to kill Ellie
    - Tommy gets shot straight through that face but somehow survives
    - Jesse has such a forgettable death
    - Ellie has basically no development over the course of the game as she still wants revenge at the end.
    - So after killing hundreds and finally get to Abby (again), she ends up not killing Abby because she sees Joel, which surely would make Ellie want to kill Abby even more, but no, Abby gets to live and Joel gets his head pounded with a golf club

    Overview -
With all of its positives, I cannot give this heap of dog **** more than 2 for the incredibly disappointing story.

Its really sad that not even games are left out of politics these days. Look at how many 10s and 0s this game has gotten. This is what happens when you force issues and tries to "educate" people that dont need or want to be educated. You divide people into camps and get ratings that has very little to do with actual gameplay.

The game is visually stunning as expected. Unfortunately thats where the positives end. The combat is as stale as it was in 2014 but this time the story and the characters are nowhere near strong enough to carry the game on their own. Theres a zombie apocalypse going on but the characters are too busy bickering to notice. If you want to escape reality for a while dont get this game. The writing is not good enough. The Last of Us - Part 2 tries to be something its not and never should have aspired to be.

The story is a laughably bad excuse for a sequel. The gameplay has not been improved except for the trivial jump button, which might as well be removed because it is useless. AI has not been improved either, zombies still act really stupid. The game is visually nice, but it still has many bugs. Notably, corpses will just disappear if you don't look at them for a split second. The game is way too violent, but I'm sure many sociopaths and psychopaths alike are happy about that. All in all, the game is just a bad experience. The maximum score it could ever deserve is a 7/10, but I'm not that generous. Expand

But we were never here for Graphics and Gameplay. The first game excelled in its story and was praised for its depiction of characters.

Sadly, the same thing can't be said about this game. The Story feels like a bad fan fiction. The protagonists behave out of character and very often illogical.

Overall the legacy of the first game is not treated with respect. It's apparent that it was more important to ship some Agendas instead of making a good game. The ending especially feels like a punch to the face.

ND used to have a reputation, where you could buy each of their games blind and it would never be a waste. With this game, they have lost that privilege.

The story is terrible. Poorly written characters with actions that feel very unnatural and forced. This is a story rife with political pandering and political ideology which is not inherently bad...but so very poorly handled here. A real fall in quality from the first game. I found the end to be deeply unsatisfying-it made the entire experience feel pointless.

I must mention the blatantly misleading marketing before release which implied and inferred that certain characters are a much larger part of the plot than ended up being true.

The Last of Us Part 2 is a brutal, vapid, overwrought experience offering no insights or lessons beyond "revenge is bad". But what did that lesson cost us? Everything.

It's a ultimately a soulless sequel that failed to deliver what it's promise. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, waited 7 years for this and managed to pick up and play a copy a few days early.

The graphics push the PS4 to its limits and look great however you might run into frame rate slowdown with an older console. Expect dated QTEs, horrendous AI, very same-y models scattered throughout, and combat that's meh to say the least. Cordyceps are the secondary fodder to the humans (pregnant, trans, and whatever come between) and animals you fight throughout (dogs included). And, I get the whole "what if WE'RE the real monsters" motif, but come on Naughty Dog.

The downside that really hit me is not only do you lose a character like Joel who was a well loved character for NUMEROUS YEARS, but he also gets falsely advertised in a trailer, and then killed in the most asinine way. It's so seemingly uncharacteristic you wouldn't believe it when you play it. Abby's introduction for revenge for being the "daughter" of the doctor you killed in TLoU 1 was fine IN CONCEPT, but her character as a whole feels bland and not fleshed out at all. I also didn't feel sorry for her narrative even when the game literally pulled me by the hand and expected me to as well.

Not to mention the REAL kicker of it getting trailer after trailer showing you playing as Ellie and following her story, you have the worst bait and switcheroo of you playing the majority of it as the new unlikable character, Abby, really sucked.

But in conclusion you get a hamfisted "revenge is bad" narrative slammed down your throat after literally tearing through slogs of enemies the entire game to get to the finale and it being; "Well i did the damage to get here, and I'm literally about to kill you but hey, even though you killed my father figure, go on and leave now." And then Ellie just lets Abby walk on, after getting 2 fingers chomped off.

I basically feel like i wasted 7 years of waiting, $62.45, and roughly 26 hours of my life playing a poorly written, bland, and sloppy game who shows it off in spades after losing their original writer. In my eyes, they should have just stuck with the Jak 4 concept instead of this dumpster fire.

Without spoiling anything, the ending was a total cop out and was just huge sequel bait. My eagerness to play as Joel and Ellie and continue their adventures were stopped dead in their tracks as quickly as it began, If The Last of Us was the high point in Naughty Dog's career, this is surely the low. It is no wonder why 80% of their team left during this game's creation due to disagreement of its creation. Neil Druckmann and any others involved in this story, writing, dialogue, or narrative, single-handedly ruined it all. Every single interesting characteristic regarding Joel and Ellie has been stripped in a cheap attempt to turn fans against them and sympathise with the contrived antagonist, who you play as for most of the game. Of course you have amazing visuals and environments and fantastic soundtrack, but then again - subpar and monotonous gameplay, genuinely insulting to fans of the previous title and a perfect example of clichéd, frustrating, uninteresting and quite frankly abysmal storytelling sent on a completely unrelated tangent to the previous title. Joel and Ellie don't actually interact in the present storyline at all, only through flashbacks - which are the only decent sections of this mess, so fans of the dynamic from the previous game will be severely disappointed.

Everything built and developed from it's master-crafted predecessor is thrown away in this horribly written, needlessly grim waste of time.

Then proceed to say how they played an hour or support the game without having played it themselves. I love the "...not a perfect game but... 10/10".

Well, i played it and it's only redeeming quality is the graphics and sound.
People ain't mad because of LGBT characters but because it's the centerpiece of the story instead of surviving in a post apocalypse world.
People ain't mad because Joel died but because he did due to extremely out of character behavior just for shock value and making space for the new protagonist. Ever thought of having him die protecting Tommy or something that don't leave such a bitter taste and would be more in line with his character?
People are mad about Ellie killing 100's of people to get her revenge but stop because of a dumb flashback because ND did not want their new character killed.

If you really wanted to see how much people like or dislike Abby, which you seem to think people cared about her, you should have given the character a choice. I bet most of us would have killed her at the end.

Con: Crap ending, too much romance bs, repetitive gameplay, repetitive NPC models and tons of plot holes/out of character decisions. Quicktime events galore.
    Pro: Graphics and sound.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Man, what the actual **** I have been sooo mf hyped for this game. Trusted Naughty Dog with my soul. But now I understand how bad of a company and studio they are. Manipulating reviews, controlling advertising, false advertising in their trailers like we would not notice. They created the masterpiece that we know as the last of us 1. A game where we grew in love with the characters. Learned to appreciate their thoughts and emotions. Once we heard of a sequel everyone including myself became so hyped wanting for more of the characters we loved, a satisfaction to see where the journey of our favorite characters would continue. BUT NO WE WERE ALL WRONG. Naughty dog took this as a step to introduce politics and their stupid agenda they seem to idolize so much. We don’t care if the character is a girl, or a lesbian, or this or that. As long as it makes sense to the plot and is not trying to shove it down our throats then is fine. This game introduces a diverse cast of characters forcefully. Tries to makes us erase our memories about everything and everyone we loved in the last of us 1. Erase everything completely. As soon as the game starts they kill of one of the characters we love in the most horrendous possible way. And then whole game then process to show events that want to make us hate said character. Oh did I forget to say that they make you play as the character that destroys what we love so much. There aren’t enough words to describe how bad the writing and the plot is. Is just so barebones and in the end remember this words “IT WAS ALL FOR NOTHING”. Graphics are great, amazing in fact. And gameplay is fun I guess, a little to gory, guess naughty dog is a bunch of fckng psychopaths that get hard on this. The shooting just sucks pretty hard. All in all I wouldn’t recommend this game to anyone that loved the foundation of what the last of us 1 was. Expand

Shooting and Fire kills don't contribute to anything beyond the aesthetic reach that looks very good on my PS4 SLIM. Hiding behind covers is still imperfect as to review what causes and fits of fury, even at normal difficulty levels. The worst aspect, however, is the story. We had a free mature story and got revenge stories and ambiguously apply that undermines everything we did. I think the imperfect game is not a delight, because it is simply cut. Graphics refreshing And at least the usual plot digested the fact that I had to skim the limping mechanics through available to unsatisfactory ending. I had the impression that I was playing Call of Duty with craft. The game has a lot of scripts and requires specific behavior from cb. I felt like having sex with a girl who's got a lot of virginity who behave her because it's their first time. And even being somewhat experienced, we come to the conclusion that she is active herself was not pleasant as I finished the challenge undermined the sense of all theoretical fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where to start?

My review is not based on the countless BS illegal scams that Naughty Dog and Sony did...

Honestly, it's not even about what they did to Joel..

Sadly, this game is one of the biggest disappointments of the this generation.

The writing of this game was terrible and when I say terrible, I mean the worst I have ever seen. It was a story that was completely meaningless and had no resolution. SkillUp was correct when he said that you could interchange any of the characters and the story would be exactly the same. Joel and Ellie, who were some of the most incredible and well written characters in gaming history, had almost no modern day screen time together.

"But Raven, what about the flashbacks spread throughout the game??"

That's the problem... The flashbacks ARE WHAT WE WANTED THIS GAME TO BE!

There simply is no such thing as TLOU without Ellie AND Joel. Let's be honest, we knew that Joel was going to die. He had to. But not like this... Where is the care, Niel? You both figuratively and literally spit on his corpse. And for what? Some cheap thrills? "To divert my expectations?"

Let's put Joel and Ellie aside for a moment and simply state the obvious. This game is just one plot whole after another. It didn't make sense in the end. I hated the characters, as expected. The attempt to make Abby likeable (which is the only thing I can assume you did with her sections) was laughable at best. She had no redeeming quality, nothing that made happy about the ending.

You get a 2 simply for the somewhat updated gameplay and the beautiful set pieces. You could at least do that right.

A bunch of friends and I decided to buy one copy for all for all of us to take turns playing at one of our houses after hearing about the storyline. We couldn't believe a company would do what's been said on the net. We had to know for ourselves with as least cost possible
I have to say, at least the game-play and control was decent, actually improved. Well except the button bashing X. What the heck, why is that a thing in 2020?
The supporting game engine is impressive. The world is detailed and well done, if only there was continuity. Face animations are many times border line creepy though.
But that's where the good of this game ends.
FYI were only maybe half done with the game as I write this. The story from the original was absolutely destroyed! The main character Joel is killed off a early in the game, and none of the new characters are relatable. Ellie plots her vengeance on Joel's killer (Abby), but then you get stuck playing as Abby. What? Why?
The narrative is forced, and poorly executed (so far)
Who the heck was this meant for anyway? No one here really likes where this has gone. It pisses off pretty much everyone, including our 2 friends in the LGBTQ community.
We get into these games for escapism from reality.
Why do we need to be slapped in the face with an agenda, I personally find shoving in politics into an otherwise good escapism game *offensive*.
It barely makes sense a lot of the time, there are scenes included that have no additive effect to be in here.
Glad we didn't all spend money on this.

Update: We are many hours into the game now. .. Nope We haven't changed our minds. It's only become more irritating. The game story does not flow well at all. One moment you're trying to save yourself by button bashing X, next your dropped into a cutscene. After the cutscene(s) you find yourself trying to figure out where the hell you are now and why. The puzzles are, well for the lack of fitting words... Uninspired. They feel like a child trying to make up a game for an adult with a "gotcha" The characters make me angry, You never get a decent back story you can connect with for (at least as far as we have gotten) for Abby. I loved the first game for how you can connect with the characters. Well we have a copy, so we will try to finish it out but.. I'm pretty sure that we all agree this is a MASSIVE letdown I just can't believe THIS game is what they came up with as a sequel to The Last of Us.

In honesty, the game deserves a bland-to-good rating, but for all the things that have been happening around it, the image of it being an acclamed masterpiece needs to be diluted. Shame on ND for having had the resources to potentially making a genuinely impactful experience out of the sequel and having ended with this, shame on them for all the pathetic attempts at damage control when it became evident what they did, and shame on the industry for attempting to mellow the outcome

The dialogue is bad, Joel and Tommy are not credible in their roles (not that Joel sticks around much) and Abby's whole gang of rag-tags are insufferable. The humiliating way Joel dies is an insult to his character, the first game, and the fan base's intellect. I just won't fall for such cheap attempts at emotional manipulation. Joel is reduced to a mere instrument for justifying this badly designed revenge plot. And in the end, they still try to make him the bad guy. The game wants you to think there are more deep themes at play but there aren't. They did it for shock value. The characters are just puppets, servient to the plot and scarcely have any motivations of their own.

At least it's fun, right? Not unless you enjoy dragging yourself through 25 hours of bleak slow-paced cut-scenes, with unlikable characters you can't even relate to. It's gonna pay off in the end when the story is supposed to go somewhere and make some sort of point, except it doesn't, and you forgot about it anyway because you got tired of stabbing people's throats over and over and over again.

The game, in principle, did not need a sequel, since the answers were given, and the points were set. Yes, there was an open finale, but there was a completion. Heroes went their own way.

And what they did here ... I did not like it. Perhaps with me a cruel joke was played by expectations. Sorry, but that’s not what I would like to receive. The gameplay is interesting, the plot is bad.

    And now the spoilers. 3... 2... 1...

Joel's death is too dumb. Abby is simply evil. If it weren’t for the storm, if it weren’t for the zombies, if Ally had shot earlier, if ... She just left for banal luck and that’s it. Anyway, I didn’t like his death.

The fact that he will die was understandable from the first teaser in 2016, but how it was presented ...

Santa Barbara is some kind, given that Abby is the daughter of that doctor from the end of the first part. Well, like, to kill a character in the first two hours of the game ... it's extremely stupid.

I am offended that from Joel, who in the first part was a trap for a billion miles, he made an idiot who says his name to everyone in the apocalypse world, аnd he doesn’t understand that he is being trapped.

Joel certainly didn't deserve such a dumb death. If they had worked out his death better, it would have been cool, dramatic, and everything like that, but not the way it was done in the final version. I repeat: I did not like such a death. It's stupid.

Everything except story is pretty good. Story telling is awful and the ending is probably the worst ending I've seen in video games.

Disappointing. Needlessly bleak and the gameplay feels very last gen. If I didn't know how many years this game took I would've assumed it was a rushed sequel. As a follow up to one of the most critically acclaimed games on the last generation of consoles it falls very short. Save your money a wait for Ghosts of Tsushima instead.

Characters make atrocious decisions, unnecessary gore. Ending leaves much to be desired. I can say more about this game, but I just don't want to put my hands in this **** It's terrable. I even now don't understand why they created this Part 2. It's just doesn't make any sense. You can just don't play this game and this won't change nofing. I'm sorry for my bad English, but I really hoped that this game will be good. Now is my only one hope it's cyberpunk. Expand

Expand

Really bad ending, pretty much massacred everyone and end it with a stupid reasoning

Same combat as in 2013. Great graphics. But the story tries too hard to be dark and edgy for the sake of it. The hope for a worthy payoff is what drives you to finish this, only for the ending to rub some extra salt into your wound

How on earth naughty dog thought killing joel the main badass from the first part would be a good idea? I mean cmon thats **** at this part of the game its wasted potential.
Sad how you can ruin a franchise with just one lazy written story and this form of a second part. We dont need this second part, i will forget this **** and play the first part all day long now.

Characters i was excited to see again are acting like different persons, they even have less screentime than the new ones. And the new ones ? They are incredibly bland and uninteresting.. And for the record i dont minde lesbians, female characters or anything. Its just that it doesnt work in this game. It was supposed to be about Ellie and Joel, period. What this game suffers from the most is the shock value. Somehow masters of storytelling, at least until this game Naughty Dog did the absolute cheapest and lamest decision in order to shock us. I expected much more from them.. Well at least this game taught me to never again be excited for something when it comes to good storytelling and never again trust Neil Druckmann as a writer. PS: 2 points for graphics and voice acting. Expand

So I played and I asked: Wtf is this?! Going for subverted expectations and shock value? Really bad move. Joel got downgraded massively, showed him like he is a naive dumbass, joel from the first game wasn't like that.
And Ellie is just a pessimistic and ungrateful **** She had everything in her life and still thinks her life doesn't matter. Dina is a complete waste of character.
And Sony lied about that trailer in September last year, it wasn't Joel, it was jesse and jesse got wasted pretty quickly too wtf.
And after 25 hours of misery and killing non stop everyone who had nothing against Ellie, Ellie lets go of person who killed her father just because "revenge is bad"

    2/10 waste of hype

Graphically and technically amazing as can be expected by ND. Unfortunately the amazing job the graphics team did is completely negated by the terrible story and dusted gameplay. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
