This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why do we have to play with Abby so much? Ok, we understand that Joel killer her father and that she wanted revenge but we could have started the game with Abby’s story and experience her father’s death with her so we like her from the beginning, so that when she kills Joel we can at least understand at first why she did that, but why have Joel killed from the third hour of the game and have us hating on Abby so much then forcing us to play with her (and helping Lev and his sister sh*t won’t make us love her, this was just a waste of time) We should have stopped playing with Abby right after Joel’s death and continue with Ellie then meet her at the end of the game or something so we have hate built up towards her (that’s after loving her from the beginning of the game) and Joel’s death scene could have been so much more emotional, come on naughty dog. The story felt like it was written by a kid who hates Joel so much and didn’t want to play with Ellie anymore.
Graphics could have been better in my opinion and there is a lot of glitches throughout the story that disrupts the experience even more.
I wish they didn’t make this sequel as it ruins the first one for everyone.

I still love naughty dog and still think they are one of the best game developers out there, but they just didn’t go right with this one. Sorry.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us is one of my all time favorite games, so I was obviously very much looking forward to Part 2. I avoided all the spoilers and leaks and went into the game without a skewed perspective (other than maybe my own excitement and expectations based on the first game).
Two hours in and nothing has really happened, and there doesn't seem like a clear direction for the story. You're playing as Ellie, but at one point that switches and you're playing as a character named Abby. You have no idea who she is, who her friends are, why you're playing as her, but you know they're looking for someone who might be living in Jackson. Then, playing as Ellie you watch this Abby person smash Joel's head in with a golf club, thus setting up Ellie's revenge quest.

The game looks great, it's graphically pretty stunning, and I didn't mind the first 12ish hours of gameplay - playing as Ellie. There are parts that drag on for far too long, and the exploration gets stale. I just wanted to get to my next destination and progress the story. As Ellie the game makes you do some pretty awful stuff and seems to be intentionally trying to villainize her character, while also making her seem very bland, flat, uninteresting, and one-note. Then, after about 12 hours, there's a switch and you're back to playing Abby. Halfway through the game you have to play the girl who beat Joel's head in, and also start over with modding weapons and specs. During the beginning of this portion you learn that Abby's dad was the surgeon Joel killed to save Ellie at the end of TLOU. ND is shoving Abby down your throat, trying to make her sympathetic at every turn -
Ellie kills dogs in her parts, Abby pets them and throws them balls!
Ellie is killing everyone, Abby saves two kids from a cult!
Ellie murders a pregnant woman, Abby stops herself from killing a pregnant woman!
In trying to make Abby some sort of foil to Joel or Ellie, they demonize those two characters to try to prop Abby up, and force the "you have to look at things from other perspectives" aspect down your throat. I didn't want to play as Abby. I didn't sympathize, or empathize with her. She killed Joel, as Ellie looked on, begging for her to stop.
The new characters are all fairly uninteresting, on both sides. I have zero investment in Abby's friends, and the folks on Ellie's side are just as boring and forgettable. The best moments of the game are flashbacks of Ellie and Joel, and watching their relationship fade over time as Ellie begins to question what happened at the hospital, and eventually finds out. They're emotional moments that I wish had been explored further.
Now, the ending. After playing as Abby for 10-12 hours, you shift back to Ellie. She's living on a farm with Dina and their kid, and it seems like happy times. But Ellie is having flashbacks of Joel and embarks on another quest to kill Abby. Now we're in Santa Barbara. All of this felt disjointed and I felt really disconnected from the game by now. I really didn't want to continue and I honestly didn't care anymore about Abby or revenge, because Joel has gotten kind of lost in all of this by now. When he was killed I cracked my knuckles and was ready to go on this journey with Ellie to get revenge. At the end I had lost all of that. Anyway, turns out Abby has been taken prisoner by some group in CA. Suddenly it feels like we're playing Tomb Raider or Uncharted and Ellie is breaking into a compound with a prison only to kill Abby. All in all, after a fight and Ellie almost killing Abby, Ellie has a flashback of Joel and lets Abby go. In the fight Abby bites off two of Ellie's fingers. Ellie returns to an empty farmhouse. Dina is gone. She can't play the guitar Joel gave her. She has nothing. Oh, and Abby sailed off into the sunset with this kid who she was protecting. So, yeah, revenge is bad, but only sometimes, I guess?
This game could have been great and could have explored so many aspects of this world, but they shoved an unsympathetic character down your throat, killed Joel in a very cheap manner, in a story riddled with plot holes and characters doing things very out of character. The pacing was off, the story waned, and two beloved characters were destroyed. It felt like the pretentious bs that a Fine Arts major college student would try to pass off as deep and philosophical, but has no actual depth or purpose, then those who don't like it are blamed for "not getting it".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. no idea how the metascore can include so many 100/100 ratings... the game continues with the classic, loveable tlou aesthetic, mechanic and movement system we all loved so much, but quickly turned into a mess of a game through losing itself in too many character plots, time changes and forced feelings about these aspects. in no way, shape or form could the loyal fan base and lovers of tlou1 ever consider liking abby to the same degree that we love/loved ellie and joel. the game is a real disappointment and insult to those that cared and the purity of these characters. joel, killed off instantly. ellie, changed into a political statement about naughty dogs acceptable of gay/lesbian relationships. the very essence of joel was spread throughout the game in flash backs, to make players miss him and find out more about him, when, in my opinion, he was used to re-grasp player attention after playing a character they didn’t care about for so long. joel is debatably my favourite video game character ever. and those flash backs were my favourite part of the game, returning to what made tlou1 so great. raw emotion and attachment through a character, by choice, and through development, through the softening of himself, through the real energy and love that he brought to all his scenes. comparing him to abby can never be done, as she was seen by others as a brutal killer, coined by mel as a horrible person, and continually considered that by players regardless of her small deeds to redeem herself. the game touched on so many things that didn’t get enough screen time jackson - 1 scene, if that isaac - 2 scenes, after being hyped up for so long santa barbara - ‘2 levels’ tacked on the seraphite prophet - killed instantly when the two run always enter the game so many themes that deserved more time, but instead focused on a completely screwed love story about abby and owen, that no one cared about.... i wish i loved this game and i could continue, but i really wish that joel and ellie’s characters were treated with more care and respect. if this game was never released, i would be far happier, having a pure and faultless remembrance of these characters, forever being my favourites ever.. but alas, they were dragged through a shameful mess of vengeance, split timelines, plots with limited memorable scenes. my favourite parts included most ellie levels, the wlf truck scene and predominantly the joel flash backs. rest in peace joel and ellie, you will both be remembered for part 1. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review hurts to make as I believe the first game is a masterpiece and one of the best games of all time. This game, however, is not that. This game's story is an insult to the first game and fans of the first game.

Before I delve into that though there are some notable positives. The graphics are nothing short of incredible for PS4. I ran it on Base PS4 and the game is one of the best looking games on the system. It wouldn't look amiss on PC. The settings and accessibility options as well are nothing short of industry-leading. Even PC games could learn a thing or two from the options menu in this game. I also enjoyed the more open world section in Seattle and the story early on, excluding that particular scene. There are some very nice moments that I won't spoil.

However, the main negative is the story, especially the second half. Playing as Abby for 10 hours is not fun. She is not a character that is relatable or in any way good. This section of the story only serves to make the player hate her even more. The Sex Scene is one of the worst things in any game ever. I have no problem with sex in video games. Witcher 3 and Mass Effect did it well. But here it goes on too long, is too explicit and just looks really awkward and unsettling. This is made worse by the context of the situation. That Owen is cheating on his pregnant girlfriend and Abby is knowingly continuing. The story is also very convoluted at times with flashbacks within flashbacks and too much unnecessary fluff for characters that are extremely unlikeable and lack any redeeming qualities. The ending is also extremely unsatisfying and just left me feeling like the whole game was pointless, this is made worse by the fact the first game ended with a satisfying conclusion and so a second game never needed to exist.

The story has ruined the series for me and I will not play part 3 if it ever launches.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazon wouldn't let me review this, so I created an account here. Forget all the negative reviews about agendas, this game has WAY more problems going on to justify its terrible review scores.

The positives are that it is a beautiful game and the level-designs are top-notch. Gameplay is essentially the same as the first game, so take that as you will.

The negatives? Where to begin? The story structure is a complete mess. Flashbacks are leaned on heavily and add little depth to the story. In fact, the flashbacks are so out of place - characters killed earlier in the game get hours of meaningless flashbacks when you know they are already dead - that they become a chore to play though. It's almost as if the writers saw LOST and thought they could mimic the format but completely missed the point of the flashbacks informing the present character development.

Even worse is the treatment of the characters from the first game (arguably the best part of TLOU). The developers go out of their way to make the player dislike Joel and Ellie and spend 10-15 hours trying to make you like their new character Abby. it just doesn't work and they know it. If this new character was the main character in a new game, they would be just as bland and uninteresting.

These poor story choices devolve into ridiculous character decisions just to move the plot to the next set piece but make no sense given the context of a post-apocalyptic world. Then you have the message of "Revenge is BAD" while the game wallows in gory violent kills. Top it off with the cliche ending of letting the main focus of the revenge go free after killing hundreds of other people and the absolute mess is complete.

Gameplay is repetitive and becomes a chore; Hope you liked your first stealth kill animation because you'll be seeing it play out a hundred times exactly the same until the very end of the game. Likewise, you'll have to be pretty unaware to notice that the NPC enemies - despite claims of realism - are duplicated over and over to the point where you'll start wondering if you are fighting a clone army. Ridiculous scarcity of items - NPCs will shoot hundreds of rounds at you but suddenly their dead bodies have no ammo once you kill them - just makes the game drag on and on when a full clip would save the player hours.

In the end, the only feeling a player will really have is wondering why they spent 25-30 hours on a game that really concludes with no sense of accomplishment and characters that aren't worth the time spent.

Gender Politics shoved in your face, which would be fine if it enhanced the story, but it doesn't. Everything that made the first game great has been surgically removed and replaced with stale dialogue, unlikable characters, forced relationships with no buildup or backstory and just generally an exasperated sigh of bad writing.

I should make my opinion very clear, after the first hour or so of the game, I could see where the storyline was going and I had no desire or motivation to continue playing. I only finished the game out of love for the first one and respect to the people that worked hard on it. I can't believe i waited 7 years for this. Do NOT believe what you see in the trailers. Naughty Dog lied and used familiar characters for the trailer to maintain the secrecy and "Spoiler-Free" nature of the games actual story. Which is tasteless and unwarranted.

If you loved the first game, do NOT play this one. You will see your favourite characters destroyed for the sake of a gender political agenda that does not fit in The Last of Us. I wish I hadn't played this game.

As an avid fan of Naughty Dog earlier releases, despite the leaks I was still hoping that no matter what's in the leaks, this game is still going to be something special. After all there is no other studio that can tell story the way ND does, right?

I'm probably one of many people that during the game came to conclusion that creators wanted you to suffer. They drag you though horrendous, emotionally draining gaming experience. Game is designed to make you miserable and there were moments when I was considering just quitting it.

Beloved characters from part one are nowhere to be found. Joel is an old, sad, beaten dog full of guilt. Ellie is completely different person that treats Joel like a dog. There is a cast of new completely irrelevant, forgettable characters that I could not care less about. Story is full of inconsistencies and plot holes. Writing can only be compared to what those two clowns did to GOT season 8.
Let's not forget super important sex scene that was so crucial to find it's way into this game.Scene that was so gross I could not watch it. Dude f*****g dude named Abby with herculean body and semi female face.

Druckmann managed to destroy everything that fans loved from part one, leaving me devastated and heart broken. He killed Joel, forced me to play half of the game as his killer trying to convince me that I should like that character. Story does not provide any profound message just a mess of unfinished plots, irrational decisions.
I was left with the feeling of confusion and emptiness after watching with bleeding heart final moments of a biggest looser of the story, emotionally and physically devastated girl named Ellie.

I cannot comprehend what was Druckmanns motivation to destroy something so beautiful and unique that was enjoyed and loved by millions of fans around the world. To make fans suffer to intentionally cause them pain. I would like to unsee it unplay it , pretend that it never happened.

I feel sorry for developers, programmers, artists etc who put so much work and heart to make this game look like it is. Visually this game is stunning. As a story driven game none of this efforts could save it unfortunately.

So for my background before I explain the score. The Last of Us 1 has been an amazing game. Not my top games of all time, since I was not a fan of the game play but the story itself carries the game as a whole easily 9/10 just for that.

Now back to part 2. This game is complicated, if you ignore the story..... the game can easily hit 8/10 for me with how amazing the game looks. The story.....I dunno, I feel like this game is too deep into telling the players how **** life is in this game that they forgot how their original actors should act or behave....or anyone for that matter should act or behave in certain situations.

Gameplay: I'll start by saying the gameplay is an improvement from the last game. Upgrades, new weapons and some new actions. I wasn't a fan of the original and this one actually didn't change my opinion. They added prone which is nice but the AI is kinda laughable and the jump button is used in minor cases that they might as well not have implemented it. The dodge button is nice, but at the same time very over powered, where majority of the game you can just dodge out of the way and melee back to win, making using your cool new weapons pointless. Also quick time events...theres a lot that doesn't feel like its needed (RE7 syndrome). They added in like a few new things to kill, some bosses that overall has the same strategy for everyone of them. The gameplay is better than the original, by a good margin but overall mechanics still is not my cup of tea, and I understand how other players would love this type of gameplay.

Graphics: The graphics, by all means, is amazing. I love the atmosphere and how the world looks. This is where I personally think this game shines. Very little to say about this category, it is exceptional.

Sound: So sound is overall pretty good, The sound the npc's make when they die, the gunfire, atmosphere and some voice actors are great. Some negatives I have is some voice actors seem to have very little emotion when certain scenes happen. I'm unsure if it was the dialogue or it was the performance but most of the time I was not convince. Like the times they should be straight up shouting or frustrated just seems off....like they are midly annoyed if anything.

Story: Okay, this is a biggie. The story for the majority of the game....is basically misery simulator. You There is like.... at most 2 scenes in the game where I really like and the rest of it is just pain. The writing is at best only centers at telling you how horrible killing is and revenge is. Forget realistic character development or for that matter, realistic characters. For a game that tells you how horrible it is to kill others, they sure try to make it very fun for you to....basically kill others, with all these quick time events and awesome guns and stuff. Time skips that disrupt the story rather than enhance it, forcing an unlikable character down your throat, showing how likable she is....just makes me hate her more. Also the fact you have to play a very unlikable character for half the game....half of it.

Now for my final thoughts, I think this game is going to sell a lot. It is the predecessor of one of the most important game of last gen, of course it is. But it is not the same game by story standards. This is a Star Wars the Last Jedi feel. It will do amazing but it would divide the fandom. Some would love it, others won't. just like with Final Fantasy I am bias and I would grade with bias...because I am human and I like what I like. For Final Fantasy I graded that game a 10/10 because they made me feel like a kid again and they honored their characters and give a strong story telling that makes you feel invested and alive. The Last of Us Part 2 does little to honor their characters, and worse honor their previous game story telling. At best it is a 3/10 for me.

The world looks amazing and you truly feel you are years into the apocalypse. But half way in, the game forces me emphasize with Abby by making me play as her. The game shows her softer side and the suffering she endured from Joel's actions in game one. You make soms friends, you pet a couple of dogs, find and help the only transgender kid in the entire apocalypse and your daddy dies. But after all of this (10hours) I still found myself not caring for this girl at all. Once upon a time 'the last of us' would find it enough to insinuate thinks like love, personal growth, but also sexual preference and/or identity. But part 2 has lost all sense of subtlety.
Instead it force-feeds you that, what once was said with just a look or hint. I get that Lev wants to be a boysoldier but was born a girl. I got it when his former scar friends called him Lily. I got it when Lev then calls atention to it. And i still got when his sister again spells it out for anyone that must have missed it the first couple of times.
I get it! You scored and made your progressive point. I dont care! But stop thinking im stupid and stop ramming it down my throat.

The whole Abby part took me out of the game.
I want to like her but she killed and tortured what feels like my father and or mentor.
I found that, while playing as her I stopped looting (which is a shame because the environments are gorgeous),
I couldn't be bothered to play stealthy and didn't really care if and when I died.
I basically rushed through the game just to get it over with. Unbelievable that journalists gave the grades they did!!! Anything above a 7 is a complete bought and payed for LIE!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, I usually don't write reviews but I've been playing Naughty dog games since the year 2013 and loved it, My First Naughty Dog Game was The Last of Us, and it still is a masterpiece,
Just finished playing Last of Us 2,
And I think it's not worth it and definitely, not at a masterpiece,
This time Naughty Dog botched up the story, without hearing to the fans that were so much excited about this game, and I was one of them.
Gameplay, Sound, Graphics are all awesome and really like playing it but for what,
The STORY does not have a conclusion and neither does the starting, on how the game does it with its most beloved character.
Here is what I felt after playing the entire game:

    # Why keep crying and remembering the main character (that you loved him so much) and Giving him death in the first place.
    * Decent gameplay from this main character to the end of the game was expected
    # The First part of "Last of Us" makes us think about the decision that Joel has taken in the end, and even now, it's debatable. I shook me for one week after I played it.
    * Part 2, does not have any impact, except Its gameplay, which I can play in multiplayer factions anytime, plus its ending seemed like a typical movie ending which was not so hard to figure.
    # in the first part I liked bonding between two characters, like Tom and Jerry, Chip and Dale, etc
    * Here two don't have access to Second Character.

In the Ending when Joel Said: "If somehow the Lord gave me a second chance at that moment... I would do it all over again".

And that's what we wanted and I think most of the fans will agree with me,

This Game could have been much better but don't know what the Studio was thinking about,
they made it worse like Game of Thrones ending, I think its goodbye to last of us franchise.
Really Enjoyed past 7 years playing

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know this is my first review on Metacritic but I have several others on my steam profile. Im writing this as a warning to players who really liked the first game. First of all, this game is polarizing, it doesn't like to pull its punches when it tries to make you feel bad. I wouldn't have a problem with that if I was the one making the bad decisions but this game forces you to do ugly things and then tries to make you feel bad for those things.
I'm not sure how much of the team is left that developed the first game but I do know the people in charge have definitely changed and it shows in the darker atmosphere and storytelling. A lot of my anticipation of this game came from their marketing which showed Joel and Ellie but left out another main character that becomes prominent about half way in the game. This completely ruined the experience for me because I felt they were trying to cheaply get me to care for this character after all the terrible things she did and will continue to do.
Where the game easily gets my praise is in the visual fidelity, especially running on what will soon be last-gen consoles this game looks great. From the animations, the lighting, the voice acting its actually all amazing. Clearly Naughtydog are masters of their craft I just for the life of me feel like no one was allowed to criticize the story internally. Its violent and gory and the entire theme of the game revolves around revenge and about how revenge is bad and the cycle of violence has to be stopped. You kill hundreds of people and zombies in this game and in only a handful of moments before committing incredible violence did people even stop for a second.
30-35 hours of dehumanizing garbage, if there was ever a case for video games being too violent this one is hitting the upper edges of the scale. I have heard that some people really enjoy this game and i'm glad that you can enjoy something that i really couldn't.

The so called "opening up" of the game was for one area in the early game after that it's the exact same corridor gameplay as the last game only much much more of it, so much that it slows the feel of progression down dramatically, accentuated by the fact you don't want to be playing it after the first 15 minutes and then a new heavy wave of exhaustion hits at about the half way mark (around 15 hours). If they had kept to the open area idea they did in the start of this game it might have been different enough, but they choose not to.

Visual design and acting are the only things keeping this game afloat from a 0 imo, and normally i could give this game a 7 or 8 out of 10 if the direction of the story wasn't so horrendously bad. There are so many better ways Druckmann could have rearranged the telling of this story so that people didn't outright HATE one of the characters. There are so many ways the story telling of this game could have been written to enjoy it better, maybe not entirely because the most overwhelming feeling that seems oddly designed make you hate the characters you play. Granted a unique but un-enjoyable way to play a video game.

What was clear from the beginning; a story of love, vengence and Jewish history. I mean, there is SO much of the overtones and in your face Israeli-Palestine conflict and Jewish culture in this game I began to think it wasn't even about the main characters. It became just a bloody message of awareness to the middle eastern conflicts. I feel for the people lost in conflict and for those who feel so much hate in this world, and I enjoy a deep soul discovering story as much as the next person but forcing you to play as a character you hate is such a horrible way to experience a story much less to PLAY A GAME.

The writing for this game is on par with what i expect Naughty Dog to do, it does have a really good voice but I feel for the employees at Naughty Dog and the cast of this game, they did an amazing job and it's not their fault the direction of the game was so poorly designed, Niel Druckmann was just not reigned in by Bruce Straley this time. Clearly all the people leaving early in this games development were people that could not willingly fulfill the direction of this game either.

To Neil: It's your right to make the story what you want, it's not my right to say you shouldn't but you failed at providing an entertaining game, it's that simple.

To readers: if you really wont resolution to the Joel and Ellie story wait for this game to go on sale, it doesn't deserve the praise from critics or price it has.

So much greatness in the game's graphics, mechanics, and details. Yet, the story is ruined. I believe it is mainly just to preach on everyone their ideas regarding LBGT, sjw, gays, etc. (It's very clear that they are trying hard to push specific agenda).

I've never felt compelled to write a review for a game, but after playing The Last of Us Part II and witnessing the drama, I feel I must share my opinion.

    Story:

The most important part of any linear, narrative-focused game. Unfortunately, it is this game's weakest part. At it's basic level, this game is a revenge story with a message that revenge is unimportant and harmful to the one seeking it. It's been done before but most stories have been; the key is how each take handles it. I do not feel that this game does anything new or unexpected with the concept, with the only twists being the lack of payoffs. There's also a disconnect between the theme of revenge and violence being bad and the majority of the gameplay. By the end, players will be accustomed and desensitized to violence, not put off by it.

Worse still, the story's message causes characters to behave illogically at various points. If characters remained true to their nature, the game would either go in a different direction or the message of "revenge is bad" would have to be dropped. As it stands, different characters jump between bloodlust and mercy, often in the same scene, and each time it makes little sense.

The worst part of the story, however, happens at about the mid-point. Having reached the climax, the game abruptly shifts and essentially begins again with the player starting at an earlier point with no upgrades or collected supplies. About half of the latter part of this game is played through in this way until arriving at the same climax as before. This is the equivalent of starting a story over and it utterly disrupts the progress. The story is not nearly abstract enough to call for this diversion and the result is a disjointed feeling of two different stories cobbled together. The natural thing would be to let the story progress from the climax and end, with the diversion appearing as an unlockable scenario to play when the first part is completed. It's not a radical idea but it makes sense and it prevents the derailment of the story's flow.

The story is an average, uninspired affair brought down by characters plagued with inconsistencies and a bizarre narrative choice.

    Gameplay:

It takes what the first game established and polishes it. The gameplay cycle of exploration and combat is the same with additions to stealth and combat mechanics. Gunplay especially feels more solid compared to the original game and melee options are also expanded upon. Exploration and puzzle solving sections also feel more robust. That said, none of the mechanics outdo games focused on one or fewer elements.

    Graphics:

This is the pinnacle feature of this game. From character models to environments to animations, the only word for them all is "gorgeous". This game takes the style of its predecessor and upgrades everything to take advantage of the more powerful hardware. There's not much more I can say about it, except that the coders, animators, and artists are the real stars of this game.

If this were end of my review I'd rate the game at five. Zero is for games that cannot function. Ten is for an immaculate product that does not exist. Despite the technical achievements, my score is dragged down by the story. That said, there are two more issues that I cannot in good faith ignore.

    1. Content Strikes and Review Embargos

I'm combining these because they both have to do with censorship. When the leaks for this game came out, Naughty Dog was completely in the right to take down any clips, images, and discussions of the spoilers. Opinions on the contents without the contents, however, were different. Naughty Dog does not own people's opinions and such a shocking example of censorship is unforgivable. In addition, preventing critics from discussing the full game's story when that story is, again, the biggest part of the experience makes for half-finished reviews that do not give consumers the full picture. I'm deducting one point from my review in response to both these points.

    2. Crunch Time

People say this is a problem with the game industry and they are right. With recent articles about Naught Dog's use of the concept, however, and looking at the beautiful graphics, I feel the crunch was especially cruel here. These employees are artists, not mules to be ground down by impossible burdens. If a game can't meet a release deadline without using sweatshop hours, push the damned release back. That goes for all game developers but I can only imagine the sacrifice Naughty Dog's employees had to endure to polish the game to this level. Until I see evidence of improvement, all of Naughty Dog's products I review will receive a penalty of one point.

    Summary:

This is a gorgeous game with adequate gameplay let down by its story and the developer's questionable actions. Whatever awards the game receives, I hope the ones to accept them are the people who gave so much to make it possible, not the man standing on top of them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. STORYLINE: I enjoyed the game for about 2 hours into it. Then IT happens. Death is understandable in a game with an apocalyptic setting. It can be sad but still illicit a positive experience to the player. Flashback to FF7 when Aerith meets the grim reaper with an 8 ft blade. It was traumatic yet it didn't leave a horribly bad aftertaste by the end of the game. In TLOU2 though, it felt unnecessarily rushed. Like someone couldn't wait to get rid of one of the characters. Then to make matters worse, you have to play as the character who ended such a beloved one from the 1st game. The theme of revenge is done relatively like any other game or movie before, and it doesn't really make the player feel much excitement to see what happens next. It starts becoming boring and predictable. At least until the end where they throw you another curve ball to ruin yet another character from the 1st game. You're left with a sense of what was the point of all of this? In the 1st game, you had a clear goal. The twists and turns to reach it all fit together nicely, until the end where they also throw you a curve ball to the story. But unlike the 1st where there was a purpose to the actions that led to the end, in Part 2 the player is left with a strong feeling to scream "WTF was the point of all this!?". The story is severely flawed. The ending leaves you with nothing, and worse it tarnishes the legacy and choices made by the end of the 1st game. Expand

Then i kept playing and realised dying didnt change the fact i needed to play as abby. I saw what they were going for and why they did that i just dont think it needed to be so long with her. In the moment when she saw joel and he was happy ,that flash back as part of the ptds set her free and she let abby go free to find the fireflys. People forget the ambush by the bus in #1 joel saying # ive been on the otherside" when ellie asks how did he known they were under attack. The decision to play again is being held back right now by knowing ellie losing everything at the end, her fingers, her "wife" her "potatoe amd of course Joel. Now the main problem, the plot, the plot is really poorly written, old characters act out of character, new characters make nonsensical decisions, a bunch of plot holes, and little respect to the previous game, all that made the first game's plot good was sacrificed for shock value and cheap tricks to make you feel, you will likely feel terrible playing this game, and it just gets worse and worse has you go trough, and you dont even feel rewarded at the end for all the pain this game puts you trough, if anything you feel like you wasted your time, like the entire game was just a waste of time that was utterly pointless, yeah the ending was also bad

First of all the graphics in this game is topnotch wow!I had to stop once in a while just to look at the views, the snowy mountains, the falls, the flowing water, the grass, everything in this game is so crisply made and so detailed. You can clearly see the character's emotions in their faces. It's just breathtaking. The gameplay is just alright. The same with the first one with some added features like dodge and you can finally crawl now(thank god). You can also throw ropes and break windows to get to new areas which is a good addition for it can at least keep your mind running what to do next. The sound of this game is absolutely beautiful too. When I first throw a brick to break that window, the sound of a breaking glass is just so good as it shatters and hits the floor, just downright earcandy(if that even makes sense). Then comes the story that ruined it all.Naughty Dog forgot a very important thing.Majority of the fans if not all wanna buy this game because of the story, not the gameplay, not the graphics. It's what made the first one such a masterpiece.I'm not homophobic or have issues with LGBTs or having to watch a sex scene of a man and a woman whose muscles are way bigger than him(I was actually laughing the whole time while they're doing it)or whatever agenda you're trying to push.I don't care about any of that. I only care about the story which you ruined so badly and poorly written. They made Tommy and Joel complete idiots in this sequel.Tommy gave his name to a complete stranger and even invited them to resupply back at their base, worse is even Joel gave his name too to these strangers. When I first saw it I was like wait what?Is this even Joel and Tommy? It's so uncharacteristic of them to be careless and stupid like that. It's okay to change a character's fundamental trait,Squall for example being a loner, but it was shown throughout the game why he was like that and what changed him and how in the end he became more open to people. Joel and Tommy did not have that it was a straight up extreme character 360 with no explanation at all. That's just lazy story writing right there. After that the game just became an ordinary lame revenge plot which was poorly written too WTF! Abby killed someone you dearly loved and your friends, now you have a chance to give them justice and guess what? She bites off two of your fingers, then suddenly have a rush of conscience(even after killing women and dogs) then let's her go. Una historia forzada donde solo se nota que quieren fortalecer la idea de la homosexualidad, no deja de ser que un tumulto de lesbianas locas cascándose unas a otras... jajajaj que perdida de dinero. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, I'll explain why this game is awful (in my opinion). First problem is characters. No character development, no understandable motivation. It doesnt matter if Joel killed or not. It matters how he was killed. Just rush-in storyline, without any expectations. And it is not that Joel that we know from part 1. Same thing i can say bout Ellie. She just became bipolar girl with no logic in her moves. Dina - was deleted too early. Jessie - I dunno waht to say.. Just killed... Without any character explanation. Ebby - idk, maybe some people liked to play as her, but for me it was 10 hours of misery. I just aint wanna to play as that character even if Druckman shows us story bout her humanity, like saving zebras or dogs. Ebbie team is also awful, cmn, 8-month pregnant girl, best doctor in the camp, just went killing zombies and other guys.

    Details - 9/10
    Gameplay - 4/10

While the gameplay and technical aspects of the game are top-notch, the story just falls flat. The characters were just unbelievable as they made illogical decisions. This game is nowhere as good as the first game and upon completion it will leave you upset and disappointed. Avoid the misery. Naughty Dog should make some serious changes on whoever is leading that organization.

If the story of a story driven game is not good enough, it isn’t good enough. Abby’s story is good, but she didn’t need to have such a big part. 10 hours of a character nobody cares about. Poor writing altogether and even worse delivery. I’m gonna pretend this game was just a dream Ellie had.

Graphically speaking, it’s probably the most beautiful game on this console generation. I’d rank this first with RDR2 second. From the various environments you’ll be adventuring in, its stunning on every aspect. Second, the gameplay is an upgrade. There is no auto aim when you start off which adds to the realism and you will always have two approaches whenever encountering enemies: either use your resources and take them out in the open OR take the stealthy approach and take them out quietly one by one. However, the con of this is that because the story is significantly long, it gets repetitive and becomes dreadful at a certain point. The game also adds puzzles as well as letters written by different factions & groups. There are also safe combinations that provide valuable goods if you’re a person that loves exploring a game to its entirety (like me). A lot of jump scares in the game also give it a horror feeling. There were several instances where I was on the edge of my seat.
Now that the good stuff is out of the way, the negative factors of the game is primarily it’s storytelling. It’s hard not to mention it but the last few hours of the game are utterly pointless and meaningless. Since I’m striving to make this review as spoiler-free as possible, you will have the opportunity to play as another character. Essentially, what you do with this character, is complete meaningless tasks and it takes away from Ellie’s story - which is what we wanted to see more of. So much so, that you sort of forget of Ellie by the time you’re through with that portion of the storyline. While I won’t discuss the ending, it sort of leaves you with the “what was the point of all this?” In comparison to the first game, there was curve ball thrown but for a valid reason. This has none of that - nothing was achieved with what you see. The game also has A LOT of politically correct BS in it. I guess it’s their attempt to try to make the game as inclusive as possible. Overall, this could’ve been a much better game. And it pains me to say it because there was potential for it to be a great game. DO NOT rely on the critics who are praising this game. Due to the story alone, I’d say it’s a 3/10, or 1.5/5. Wait for it to go on sale.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review contains spoilers, please stop reading if you haven't finished the game.

The last of us Part 2 scores a 10 out of 10, with the most amazing graphics (foliage, water, facial expressions, the representation of a Seattle in decay...), more of the same game mechanics from part 1, new enemies and a very satisfying soundtrack.
That is... without the story and the poorly made choices the gamer has to endure.

Spoilers NOW, seriously stop reading if you haven't finished the game!

Instead of telling the story and unfolding the difficult relationship between Joel and Ellie, Naughty Dog decides it would be best to kill Joel and send Ellie on a revenge mission. Hatred, anger and stubbornness set the tone, but they aren't accompanied with character development. In fact, the choices you have to make with Ellie (several times) are utmost illogical. After completing the game you're left with a bitter aftertaste.
And if that isn't enough, you are forced as a gamer to play +-/ 15 hours with the murderer of Joel, trying to kill Tommy and beating Ellie and her girlfriend to a pulp. The murderer of Joel has it's own emotional story and a fair amount of reasons to take revenge on Joel/Ellie, but still... ... being forced to play with this character and having to make choices I didn't want to make, left me several times in a state where I didn't want to play anymore (and most of us looked forward to playing the game for 7 years).

The are 2 emotional flashbacks where you play as Joel and Ellie again, leaving you frustrated, bittered and even upset, knowing that, with the chemistry between those two, this could've been the best game sequel ever made!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just so disappointed :( The Last of us has, for years, been my favorite game of all time. I was so excited to continue the story. The visuals and score do a fantastic job however that’s kind of where the positives finished for me. The gameplay didn’t feel too different to the first however it did lose its charm for me much faster. I felt a lot of encounters to be repetitive. However my biggest issue has to be the direction of the story. I loved Joel, I get that he is a flawed character but literally everyone is in these worlds. But he was OUR character in the game. I I was not even mad about his death or even the manner of it. I knew that would be a powerful way to send Ellie on her revenge quest. But to force you to play as the antagonist and beat Ellie was a joke. 10 hour or so playing as the character her brutally murdered your character from the first game, playing through as the story rams down your throats “look these people are nice sand kind too in their version of events”. I understand what they were trying to do but I just couldn’t enjoy playing as Abby after what happened isn’t the opening chapter. Expand

If this would have been just a random game it might have earned a 6 out of 10 for the effort and for trying, but for what naughty dog was able to deliver in the past, this feels like they didn´t care at all about the story or the characters of the first game. This game is just nice to look at but you have to be able to completely shut down you brain, not know or not care about the first game and just want to enjoy stunning graphics. The writing in this game feels like a low budget teenage high school soap opera. The graphics are sadly so good that you can see bad acting, and I don´t want to say the actors are bad, but the characters and dialogs really just feel shallow and are surly directed by someone who doesn´t have contact with a lot of real humans. Most of what happens, happens because of unbelievable coincidences (also called bad and lazy writing) and almost nothing that the characters do is relatable or even just true to how you know them from the first game. This truly is "Game of Thrones Season 8" Naughty Dog style mixed with "Terminator dark fate" with the twist that they try to make you sympathise with the Terminator who killed John Connor for 10 hours, but giving you nothing to be able to. I could go on for days but overall: if this game was made to make gamers feel stupid for caring or trying to bond with video-game characters and showing them that playing games is a waste of time, then the message was delivered 10/10! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The games itself, in regards to mechanics, mood, music etc, was amazing. some of the best stealth combat ive ever experienced and the upgrades system was really great. Graphics speak for themselves; they were beyond beautiful and the small details blew me away (dust particles, light spills, ai interactions...) The game also did an amazing job of making me feel on edge at some points. HOWEVER, i feel the greatest downfall lies in the actual story. with the original last of us, I really felt a connection to the characters and the story made sense to me. Even in the left behind DLC, I really fell in love with it. In part two, i felt none of that. I did not connect with the characters in the same way and the demise of joel was extremely undeserving, despite whatever hes done. Abby is just as guilty as Joel in many things. Im not upset Joel died, i actually expected it. Its the manner it happened: him easily giving Tommy and his name to complete strangers (whether or not he knew their intentions, this is not something the Joel we know wouldve done. He was always overly cautious of strangers. you would think he would continue to be cautious especially knowing hes wronged alot of people), the spitting on his dead body and then the attempt to make players understand and like abby. The game bounces from place to place frequently and the only redeeming point in the story for me was in the Joel flashbacks, especially the one with the museum. seeing Ellie and Joel interact in that way was exactly the experience I was looking for when jumping into the continuation of their story. My absolute least favorite portion was the TEN HOURS you play as Joels killer, Abby. it felt redundant and, as hard as the game tried, I never felt an ounce of sympathy and remorse for her. Just constantly found myself annoyed and rushing through this portion. playing catch with a dog or being nice to SCARS after killing dozens is not redeamable qualities for someone that killed the person that made the game what it was. I read a comment on youtube that said, "you wouldnt kill Nathan Drake in the first hour of any of the uncharted games". In the end, Ellie doesnt even get the revenge she had fought so hard to get. She flashes to a memory of her and joel the night of her kiss with Dina. They plan on attempting to repair their relationship. and this make her let abby go?? as she has her drowning, on the brink of death she goes, "oh yeah. nevermind." after murdering and rampging through so many different groups and areas, she just.... lets the whole thing go. this felt not only out of character for Ellie, but a slap in the face to both fans and the characters. I feel like this wouldve motivated her further, seeing joels face and the possibility of them getting back to where they were. the game couldve ended countless times: at the farmhouse the first time with Dina, At the theatre When Playing as Abby or even when Ellie is walking around with jj, Exploring their new home. Those all would have been more efficient, i feel, than what they went for. In the end, I still love the last of us as a franchise and would still play whatever they put out next in this story, if they ever do. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The start of the game was ok in my opinion. I was kind of excited that there was a 4-year time skip because it was like Ellie and Joel were starting a new adventure, but my expectations faded very quickly when the game started with Ellie and Dina. After a while playing as Ellie and Dina this felt more like a love story. Then Joel died in arguably the worst way possible and it felt more and more like a poor death the more as the story went on. It's just so sad because I had a great experience with The Last of Us 1 and I had such high expectations for this game and it just had such a sh*tty story. They also added this new character, Abby, who I'm sure everyone wanted to kill at the end but then Ellie spares her. After everything that Ellie was through all for nothing and the ending was just so sad to with Ellie's family leaving her, I'm also sure that Ellie losing her fingers and not being able to play the guitar is a metaphor for how she lost everything. I'm guessing that she went to see Tommy after the credits rolled, so I'm hoping that a DLC will come out and redeem something from this game. Gameplay-wise this game does very well. The rope physics was really fun to play around with and the gore and guns were both very well made. After all, I wish that the ending wasn't so open-ended. Expand

But on the other hand we’re supposed to feel sympathy for the other main character who brutally murders one of the first beloved characters in front of the other beloved character in the waking moments of the game. The way I see it when you play as Ellie you are forced to commit very gruesome morally corrupt actions she tries to refrain from until she has to defend her self. They try to make you feel bad for killing NPC’s with names but if you go and try to play stealthily add get caught they will murder you on the spot. We are supposed to love this new character, but here is my problem with that when Ellie murders a pregnant woman in complete self-defense without knowing she was pregnant has a panic attack and vomits immediately. Abby gets the chance to murder a pregnant woman and literally is about to enjoy it for revenge until her new little best friend stops her whom she used to murder for sport. I just feel like the whole revenge plot for Ellie is revenge is bad but on the other hand for Abby it’s just dust in the wind she can get revenge and it’s no problem because she is entitled to it. To me I feel like a couple years ago they had a whole different plan for this game but suddenly decided to change it up and rushed it. I could keep writing and making random points but honestly the sequel doesn’t deserve it. At the end of the day myself as a fan is very crushed, I waited seven years after playing that first beautiful game to get this terrible sequel. It is just sad they did my favorite characters in a game so dirty and they did me dirty. You Dirty Naughty Dog.

To wrap it up I ask what is the point of a mechanically beautiful and graphically gorgeous game if the story is going to be so shallow and a complete 180 of what the first one stood for. What I wanted was to see where the story kept going for the two characters I loved. Now I just wish I never bought this second game what a disappointment. All I can do now is try and forget I ever played it.

Deceptive advertising, in the trailers of 2016, other types of events were shown, and the Story looks interesting and good, but in the Final Game it was a tremendous lie, 3 points only for the Gameplay and the Graphic level, but in a game that the main thing was history, I leave a lot to be desired ...

Espero que tenha um The Last of Us Part 3, e que seja com a Ellie, não com a Abby, pois The Last of Us é e sempre será Joel e Ellie.

Please note these thoughts are all my own, and if you enjoyed the game I am happy for you - I honestly wish I had.

I've been an avid fan of naughty dog since their crash bandicoot days, and I've put some serious time into all of their games. So you can imagine my excitement leading up to this game. Following TLOU is quite a tough act, but I was convinced the challenge was in capable hands.

    I was wrong.

Before I start bashing things, I should not that the world and graphics are fantastic. I have not seen a game as good looking since God of War, and the development team should be commended for their hard work to build it. Gameplay is a little outdated, but fun enough to not get too boring. Crafting additions are cool (although the animations take an age), and aside from the fact you work out very quickly that most issues are solved by smashing a window or throwing a rope somewhere (or both!), it was an enjoyable experience to play within the world.

Now we get onto the meaty stuff. TLOU had good gameplay, but it was nothing to be marvelled at. What made the game one of the best, was the story that was told during your journey with Joel and Ellie. TLOU2 spits all over this, sh**s on it and smears it into the ground.

The pacing of the story was horrible, character development was non existent, characters whom I was meant to believe had relationships with each other was not believe-able. Their choices for the actual narrative were bold, yet foolish. Killing off Joel so early was obviously going to cause backlash, especially considering the inclusion of him in trailers (not to mention one cutscene which he appeared in within the trailers, but it was actually Jesse in the game). His relationship with Ellie is what so many people loved from the final game, and the flashback sequences were the best parts of the game in my opinion. But with Joel dead I decided to be open minded - they must have something spectacular set up?

    They did not.

What followed was 20 hours of badly paced, poorly written story, where I genuinely had to convince myself to see the game through. Abbies flashback section did its best to try and get me to care about her, but I spent the whole time finding wonderful ways for her to die. For as long as I was playing the game, I didn't care about her as she killed Joel. Seeing her perspective didn't change much, as if you want to go down that channel you'd have to analyse every npc Joel, Ellie and Abbie killed in the games - which should mean we have about 6000 spin offs in the works.

The one character whom started to grow on me was quickly killed before the Abbie switch, and I wish they spent more time working on developing a relationship between Dina and Ellie, so I actually gave a damn about Dina. Its' hard to take her seriously when one weeks she's dating Jesse and the next she's willing to do anything for Ellie.

Plot points in the story were very convenient, to a noticeable extent (you obviously give some convenience leeway in movies and games for the sake of the plot).

And the ending left me feeling unsatisfied and was just a kick in the teeth to what Ellies journey had been all about. The one thing she was afraid of was being alone, and hey ho - look where she ended up.

It was all in fact for nothing.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
