Huge letdown. Spits all over the legacy of the original. It’s also dull due to the unlivable characters and drab story. Very pretentious. While it looks pretty and exploring is fun, the experience itself was a miserable one, and not in a good way.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to start off by saying the first game is one of the best games I’ve ever played. It made you care about Joel and Ellie so much that if there was a sequel you would think that it would be a rollercoaster of emotions including both Joel and Ellie for the majority. That is where this game falls short. Joel’s death is not only done so dirty for all the fans to watch, but just done to advance the plot with this game. Joel’s decision should haunt him but the route this game goes with in doing so is not the one many fans wanted. This game makes Joel out to be a horrible person and makes Ellie’s final decision of mercy just seem like she is spitting on his grave and that he didn’t matter. Along with killing the main character in the first game this game introduces transgender girl named Abby who is introduced before shortly killing Joel. What this game does is makes Ellie do horrible things to get revenge but then paints Abby as the protagonist forcing the player to agree with her which is difficult considering what she did to Joel along with the game making her overall not even that likable when showing why she killed Joel. The fight where the player is Abby against Ellie is something nobody wants and is very forced. The point is the game should not have to force you to like a character and you should be able to do that on your own. Naughty Dog should have just given fans a game where you play half as Joel and half as Ellie with a good cause to want revenge with Joel dying in the end and Ellie living with Dina. Instead they give a forced plot with forced characters is Abby and Ellie in a few parts. The game goes a route no one wanted and doesn’t do a good job with the route it takes. It hurts fan watching characters whom are loved getting pushed to the side for a new character no one cares about. This sequel shouldn’t exist as the first game ended nicely and makes fans feel played themselves when they wait 6 years for something at least good. Expand

I avoided spoilers, was prepared to hurt, and confident that even if TLoU II wasn’t as good as the first one, there would be things I would enjoy about it and the story would be amazing if not utterly devastating. I adored the first game and couldn’t even imagine the sequel being anything close to something I could hate. This was especially true as I watched one critic review after another glorify the game to no end and declare that what ND had produced was a near “flawless masterpiece”.
Now, after investing nearly 30 hours into the game and throughly processing my thoughts and emotions, I can only wonder if I even played the same game as these other people. The Last of Us Part II is visually beautiful and has a play style that is enjoyable and reminiscent of it’s predecessor, the unoriginal mechanics have improved little over the last 7 years and have only a few things about them to make the game stand out. The redundant encounters along with lack of customization and rewards for exploration however are unable to compensate for the one-dimensional story-line that is overly predictable and made worse by a cringe worthy set of new characters who bog down the emotional impact ND seems to have so miserably failed to deliver. It’s crazy to me, that such a long campaign somehow manages to feel so extremely rushed, thrown together, and chaotic all at the same time. And while there are a few tear jerker moments and a handful of new faces that did have incredible potential (Jesse & Dina for example are fantastic) they are all put on the back-burner or severely outweighed by piles of uninteresting and poorly developed chapters centered on highly unlikable characters like Abby, who take a tremendous amount of effort to connect with at all. This factor is so overwhelming that it makes it difficult to grasp how anyone could possibly finish the game and say with a straight face they thought this is in any way, shape, or form a satisfying journey or conclusion.
I also find it completely idiotic that anyone believes that the issue with this game is some kind of a “SJW agenda”. Ellie’s sexuality, and the few other diverse mentions, can hardly be classified as a distraction or negative to the game. I actually found her relationship with Dina to be very endearing and one of the few story points I liked. I was even excited to see such a diverse cast, but being that all LGBTQ+ and characters of color here are disgustingly mistreated—either dying anti-climatically/horribly, barely used, quickly forgotten, and/or have endings so miserable its a struggle to understand why they were added at all.
The Last of Us 2 makes it easy to feel lost.
Nothing about this sequel brings closure and the only thing you’ll be wondering after you’ve finished it is “what was the the point?”
The concept of “revenge wrRoNg” is a lesson that could be taught from Disney children’s show’s or derived from common sense and yet Naughty Dog chose to spend their entire time stating the obvious through uneventful means, frustrating and un-engaging story-telling, and by spitting on the very shades of grey choices and characters that once made this series great.
I wish that I could say that the handful of good moments this game has made the time and money you could spend on it worth while....but the best way to describe this entire experience would be disappointing and pointless...Like GoT or the Star Wars sequels you feel like you have to finish it to the end (if you can even force yourself to do so—which, for me literally felt like an effort at times) but once you do, you just wish you had saved yourself the trouble. While it’s great to subvert fan expectations and introduce twists and turns throughout the plot, such decisions need to be executed properly and in the correct order; not wildly smashed together with under-developed story additions and highlighted by empty deaths scenes that do little other than provide shock value...another trait that has already been done repeatedly and much better. I feel like users that see no problem with TLoU2 are like individuals who insist that The Last Jedi is “misunderstood” and fans “just need to embrace different ideas” sounding like you are listening to a self-proclaimed “intellectual” that trying to convince us that **** flung at the wall is somehow “art” when in reality it really just is...actual **** Sometimes, being “different” for the sake of being different isn’t artistic, it’s just distasteful and lazy.
I respect and encourage anyone willing to play the game to decide for themselves how they feel about it as simply reading a synopsis does not give a complete picture/warrant a full review...but, the warnings that there is a good chance this game will leave you feeling like you wish you could just take a hot shower and forget everything you just witnessed are not far off. Overall score: 3/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I completed The Last of Us Part II. And I hated it.

First of all, the score of Gustavo Santaolalla is just perfect. The gameplay is great. The graphics are awesome (except some scenes, like the model of Ellie in the flashbacks of the last minute of the original game). Now, TLOU is a heavily story-based game. And this sequel lacks completely coherence, originality and meaning. It's bad writing at it finest.

Look, I loved the first game. It's characters, their bond, the ambiance, the soundtrack... But this one just doesn't feel like a real sequel. The only moments I felt like I was playing a real sequel of the last of us were in the flashbacks of Joel and Ellie.
I'm okay with Joel dying, but the way it happens its just poorly written. It isn't "brave"; It's cheap. The whole -parent figure dying and fuels the journey of his kid in name of revenge- is overused. Also the whole "revenge is bad" is extremely overused. And at last, -forgiving the enemy to not become an horrible person-let go the past- cliche, has been reused so many times that it has become comical. By the way, most of the game is filled up with a lot of plot holes and the pacing of the story is so tedious and boring.
And, at last: Abby. She's unlikable. Her character has pretty much no depth. We are forced to play as her for sooo many hours in a game that was supposed to be an Ellie's new adventure. It almost seemed to be more like an Abby's stand-alone game. And if that were the case (without including Joel or Ellie and ruining their arc's), we wouldn't mind.

So, to sum up: Loved the soundtrack, graphics and part of the gameplay (which can get very repetitive, and boring due to the slow pacing and the story) Absolutely hated the story and writing, direction and purpose of it.

This ain't The Last of Us. At least, not for me.

The characters are completely unlikable and don't feel like the same people from the first game. The whole plot is so convoluted and doesn't flow well togethor. You'd think with all the time Naughty Dog spent on the game, they would have made this even better than the first one. Overall gameplay and mechanics are slightly updated versions of the first game. In all honesty, I believe Naughty Dog should completely redo the game in order to please diehard fans like myself. The things done in this game are just disgusting and a disgrace to the first game. For that I can only give this game a 3/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is false advertising. The trailers say you're getting a Joel and Ellie experience/adventure when you're getting an Abby and Lev adventure. The way Abby was introduced into the story felt forced and contrived. Abby's dad especially feels annoying to listen to because of how he is willing to sacrifice a young girl for a cure that might not even work. Yeah I know Joel did some bad things but he didn't deserve to go out the way he did, and no one wants to play as Abby because she killed him after he saved her. I gotta also point out that this game has graphic sex scenes that feel uncalled for. The first game didn't need them, or even uncharted.... so why are they in here? This game shouldn't be called the last of us part 2, but The Last of Us 2 wrong number, in honour of making the player play as a killer who was about to kill a pregnant woman. TLOU2 completely ignores its central plot about a fungal virus, what would of been an interesting talking piece in midst of a real life virus pandemic is now put aside in favor of character backstories and LESBIUNSSSS.

There are attempts to make some kind of chemistry between these new characters but it almost always falls flat. I'm confused how even a sex/kiss scene fail to sell a relationship between them. Making a character gay, non-stereotype, big-nosed, ethnic, or a tomboy does not by default make them interesting.

Some segments from Uncharted wouldn't be engaging if not for the banter between Nathan and Sully. This is relevant as a whole lot of TLOU2 are padded stealth sections that don't have the same kind of interaction to entertain you. The only genuine character relationship is put to an end early on with no worthwhile replacement. This is so evident by the few flashback segments with Joel/Ellie which make a museum walking simulator fun.

Naughty Dog seem to have place its bets on the gameplay and new characters for the majority of TLOU2 and these are definitely not their strong suit.

Really disappointed with the game. Started off with such promise.

The game play is actually not bad, very similar to the last game if a bit repetitive. There are some great moments here and there. The graphics are stunning, this has to be said, probably one of the best looking games on the PS4, the soundtrack is also nicely done, production value is high here. The story is the worst

The story is the worst part here, without going in to spoilers it is a complete mess, a particular character is shown little respect and really ruined the rest of the game for me. The developers also took a risk and tried to do something g different but quite frankly it was a terrible decision. With a game like this that is so story driven it doesn’t matter that the graphics and gameplay are good, I was not engaged and just felt disappointed by the poor story.

It may have been a more positive outcome if the sequence of events was re-organized in a way that we get to understand what was the driving force of the antagonist in doing his/her actions rather than just bluntly forcing it on the first portion of the game.

Overall disappointed and completely breaks me as a fan of the franchise.

This is the first time I feel the need to write a metacritic review. Maybe it's the first of many others... Anyway.
TLOU2 is the symbol of EVERYTHING WRONG with the gaming industry right now. It is a technical masterpiece, wasted by a horrible storytelling, tainted with the political agendas of the editors (no, sorry: POLITICIANS).
The developers, the actors, they're all so talented. But
This is the first time I feel the need to write a metacritic review.
But they all work for a company that disrespects them AND their customers.

And then, there are the unanimous critic reviews. Apparently, this game is perfect, period. Anyone who lives (so, literally EVERYONE) knows that perfection does NOT exist. It just doesn't. So how come that game be perfect? It CAN'T.
Which just shows what is happening behind the scenes. It doesn't take a lot of braincells to understand. The critic reviews were entirely paid. You do know bribery is supposed to be illegal, right?

Anyway, back to the game. It's so long it gets boring. It just drags on and on and on. At some point it feels like the end, but nope, here we go again for a few more hours.
It tries to tell a non-linear story, but the changes of time are so random it's just annoying.
And the story... Dude! What have they done to my beloved characters??? Joel is extremely stupid, whereas he was a cold-blooded clever man before. Ellie is a monster for no other reason than shock value. Her bloodthirst is NOT justified by revenge. It's just not how humans work. People don't go on a rampage just to get revenge. That's a cliché that just doesn't happen. It's a shame because TLOU characters were so realistic and believable. In this game, they're not.
The revenge plot is an overused trope, and TLOU2 brings NOTHING to that idea. But worse than that, the end of the game utterly DESTROYS the message that "revenge is bad". Yeah: they managed to fail a cliché message! How can you be so incompetent?

Unlike the positive reviews who pretend there's nothing wrong, I won't pretend there's nothing right. From a technical standpoint, again, it's a masterpiece. There are a few scenes that are actually good: the introduction that sums up the end of the first game, and some flashbacks of Ellie and Joel.

TLOU is remembered for its beloved characters in a simple but effective story. TLOU2 will be remembered as the symbol of everything wrong in the current industry: games now are a marketing ploy, and the politicians that now govern the industry simply don't care about the game, nor about their developers, nor about their customers.

After playing through the game, and watching a full playthrough, discussing it with peers, I’ve come to the conclusion the story was not thought out. The gameplay is awesome. Seriously, the realistic blood splatter, the incredibly detailed gore, body deconstruction, and environmental destruction all show that good money was spent on the gameplay. But honestly, who plays The Last Of Us(TLOU) for the gameplay? I don’t pick up Doom Eternal or Mortal Combat thinking “Man I can’t wait to be enthralled in a gripping story!” the same way I don’t pick up The Wolf Among Us for the gameplay. The story was patchwork at best, a completely unpleasant game with terrible pacing at worst. It seems like Abby’s story was added in as an afterthought, and the order of events shows that. The developer clearly wants us to empathize with this character they plucked out of a Gears of War game (the MoCap body is literally a woman openly using steroids). Her physique aside - which admittedly breaks immersion for some reason – I HATED her for mercilessly beating one of the industries most loved characters right in front of Ellie who you still probably care about from the first game 7 years ago. How can you expect us to empathize with someone when you’ve started their interaction with the player from such a low? The order should have been, introduce Abby, and trick the player into thinking TLOU isn’t about Joel and Ellie anymore. Then maybe I would have liked any of her gang of poorly written friends. Seriously, they have the Spanish guy the dumbest lines ranging from “I just want to drink and watch Anime” to eluding to lewd acts with every woman on their base. That said, Owen and Mel were exceptions as at least they called Abby out on her nonsense for being a garbage person, but I suspect this was just me needed SOME catharsis and wanted to see someone get back at her. Half-baked character’s aside, then after you convince us to like Abby after showing her saving Lev(Lily?) or her flashback with her dad or SOMETHING likable, not a sex scene for cheap shock value, then surprise us with Joel’s murder.

I will never forget the moment in the first game when Henry shot himself, or when Ellie as a child defeated a dangerous cannibal group ON HER OWN and had an emotional breakdown as Joel comforted her, or the last scene in the game where she makes Joel swear to her that what he said is true and the WAVE of emotions evoked from the game-ending right thereafter she hears his lie. I can’t even remember the Spanish guy’s name, or the transgender kid’s twin sister’s name, why Demi? Deana? likes Ellie other than she is ALSO into girls. TLDR: The story in this game was mediocre, poorly structured, too fast-paced, and clearly rewritten too many times with late revisions to form any semblance of an emotional connection that the first game had.

No character development at all too many plot holes no likable characters except for Jessie. You are forced to play with Joel's killer for 10 hours smh that makes you wanna rush thru it because you find yourself not having fun anymore with her perception of the story and you just wanna get back to ellie perception of it. The whole second half feels forced upon you which throws off your whole experience with this game. the flashbacks are really boring at times as well. the ending makes you keep playing because you wanna kill abby sooooooo bad because she killed people you loved, so you keep at it until you reach the ending. Graphics : great, but not all that impressive (1/2).
Gameplay : very bad, enemy AI terrible, tired gameplay, not at all innovated upon from first game (huge shame). Forced myself to trudge through : 0.5/2.
Sound/visual design: 1.5/2. You can tell the environment design had a lot of passion. Sadly, the sound design was not at all impressive.
Character design/interaction: I won't spoil it but expect forced "developments" to the story throughout the game. Grows tiring very quickly. 0.5/2.
Fan impression: tempted to give it an 0/2. However a game is better than no game. Even if marginally. 0.5/2.

Final impression: game left very sour taste in my mouth. Underwhelming and dishonest. Forced interactions and unimaginative situations meant to emotionally exploit or condition the player in place of a properly installed script. Would give a -1 because it's one of the rare sequels that makes me wish they were never done as they destroy my passion for the IP (StarWars jarjar Binks says hi).

    Final score : 4-1 = 3.

    Thank you for reading.

Expand

I'll break down the review into parts, but my overall feeling on this game is that it is an immense disappointment and I am not sure how the critics rated this game so highly. First, the good:

Graphics: The graphics are amazing in this game. Everything is lovingly detailed to a fault. And by to a fault, I mean that this game took 7 years to create. If you didn't create a unique weapons upgrade animation for every single weapon and upgrade maybe we could have gotten this game quicker and with less expectations. That being said, the melee animations, the landscape, everything is amazingly detailed, down to the blades of grass. Style-wise, the drab browns and greys are not appealing to me at all, but I see why they wanted to drab, depressing colors in this game. I don't rate graphics that highly in games that I play.

    Gameplay:

Stuck in 2013. I heard the gameplay would be massively improved, but the best way of doing every encounter is still the same. Stealth around and kill everyone. Having to get into a gunfight isn't a failure-state, but it is not nearly as effective. Melee feels okay, but I think I actually enjoyed it more in the first game. Many games do all of the aspects of this game, but better. This is completely average.

    Story:

This story is so bad. The pacing is awful, and the game is about 5-10 hours too long. There are so many plot contrivances and poor character logic strewn throughout the game that it makes it difficult to view the characters as characters, they are just puppets dancing on the strings of a maniacal storyteller who wanted to tell THIS specific story with these beloved figures to get an emotional reaction out of his audience. Their own established characters and logic be damned. For any fan of TLOU1, this will feel jarring at best and completely off-putting. I truly hated it, and I can't find much good of it. The flashback scenes were the only highlights, and they were few and fleeting. The whole game should have been the flashbacks.

Overall : 3.5/10 - Graphics in a story-based game are not that important to me. The story should carry it and it doesn't. Truly disappointing experience and I can't recommend it to anyone.

    -Gameplay 8/10

Many of the same mechanics were employed from the previous game, that goes for the good and the bad. Gunfights are still scary, humans feel inherently different to combat than the infected. Though they took away some of the oppressive force that clickers brought to the first game. They're more easily dealt with here.
They did clean up melee combat with how hit boxes and animations worked so that was nice.

    -Graphics 10/10

They did a tremendous job here. With the obvious limitations on the current gen consoles (I play a bunch on PC) there were very few times the frames would fall and take away from the experience; or the AA would have to over compensate for the amount of 'stuff' on screen' and give it a 'fuzzy feel'

    -Cinematic Elements 8.5/10

Again they take the old from the last game and just polish it a little bit, the photo mode was a nice add but they didnt take time to really make something special like the first.

    The Bad and the Ugly:

    Story 1/10

It's sad to say this. The game WANTED you to love it so bad. But the plot holes and the writing pitting the loved and well rounded characters of the first game against the antagonist; was not enjoyable in the slightest.
Having Joel die brutally you knew this was about revenge. The town of jackson and Dina and the friends of Ellie have so little development that you're not really sure what's going on in the love triangle there.
Becoming Abby and beating the **** out of the first story characters was just flat out terrible. Mixed emotions and failed attempts at comedic relief led to a flat character that just made for a lacking cohesive story. The plot armor of Abby was that of an Abrams Tank. She could do no wrong and it was obvious that the writing was centered around putting her in good light, but somehow against already loved characters. The killing off of secondary characters left the end of the game feeling empty and when you finally have a chance at revenge. True Revenge. What you set out to do at the beginning of the game. Never happens. You don't even get the choice.

you destroy your relationship with Tommy, and Dina, set out on a warpath to Santa Barbara killing everyone and when you finally win. Having flashbacks of Joel, bludgeoned to death. you say "nah its ok" you let her go.

Ellie can't play guitar anymore either since she bit off 2 of your fingers.

    Boom game's over.

This game had the absolute potential of being the game of the year and the game of a decade. But appeasing SJWs and putting in all these "twists" with terrible writing destroyed any semblance of the first game. But they threw it all away because they needed to "include the wide audience that was going to play the game." BS.

We play games for the same reason people watch sports or go to the beach. To get away from all that stuff. No one wants politics in sports. No one wants politics in games.

The SJWs that broke the story never were going to play the game in the first place.

God, what a downgrade. They completely destroyed the first game-killed off Joel, who was the main reason besides Ellie that made the original so great-his character arc and how he softens up to Ellie. And then you just kill him in the first two hours and then try and make us feel sorry for the person who kills him.

    No.

If I ever get my hands on a PS4 / PS5, I will play the original, and act like this game does not exist / or is not canon. This is not a sequel to The Last of Us. It just isn't. Naughty Dog needs to stop ignoring the fans and admit they made a terrible sequel. Gameplay and visuals can be as amazing as you want them to be but the story is what drives The Last of Us. It's a generic third person zombie shooter game if you take the story out of it. If you ruin the story, it ruins the game.

    Do not buy this.

The story is just rinse and repeat all the way through. Even using, not one , but two pregnancies to try and pull on your heartstrings. The only decent scenes are the flashbacks with Joel. It recreates some of the magic of the first game but then soon rips it away and leaves you missing Joel again. Then they have the audacity to make you play as the murderer who killed him. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been waiting for a sequel to my favorite game of all time for 7 long years. The Last of us was the first game to make me actually tear up and I actually felt emotionally invested into the world of Joel and Ellie. TLOU2 Does not do that. Bad dialogue. Bad writing. Uninteresting characters they really all feel like they are just there for a paycheck and that’s it. Forced villain. Then naughty dog forces us to play as her. Killing main characters and then never mentioned again. I felt nothing when anyone ever died. If it wasn’t for the combat and the graphics then I would have popped my disk out and stopped shortly after Joel died. They tried to Villainize Joel. The gore and deaths were shock value nothing of meaning. I really did enjoy the moments with Lev and Abby. But it was constant bad thing after bad thing happening to everyone, in the first game there was that light in all the darkness. There was smiles and charm, it felt good. Here it’s all violence and just horrible things with nothing light at all. And then that final fight between Abby and Ellie I thought I had her. After everything it would pay off. Nah chief. Ellie let’s her walk. Ellie has lost two fingers. Her Girlfriend and her baby. Has lost friends. Has lost Joel. She lost Her whole life to abby. Yet she lets her get up and leave, what a joke. When I was playing as Abby I purposely kill myself just so I could see this girl die, then I’d laugh and be like “soon lol” boy was I wrong. I have never felt more disrespected by a company then I do now with naughty dog. I thought EA was bad but I guess that apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. At the end of the day i feel this was a mindless cash grab with no real value. Hey, they took my money didn’t they. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, most of the game play brought nostalgia and felt similar to the first game. The graphics are great and the music/character graphics is spot-on through my newbie gamer lens.

However, the story is hard to keep playing all the way until the finale of the game; mostly because the farther you go, the bleaker the outcome looks. Joel's death was hard for every fan, but only the beginning of a series of depressing events that made this game hard to stomach.

Disclaimer: I did not pick up this sequel to an apocalyptic-themed game and expect there to only be rainbows and butterflies in Ellie's and Joel's relationship. The ending of The Last of Us gave proof to expect a tense sequel when Joel lies and leaves a hard truth (that he killed some fireflies and destroyed the chance for a cure) that would need to be addressed in Ellie's and Joel's relationship.
Despite Joel's death hurting us all, Ellie is left alone in the end, Tommy is crippled and taking a break from Maria, Dina and JJ are nowhere to be found, and you wonder if there was any point in going through all that trauma just to have an ending where NO ONE is satisfied or at least relatively in one piece (losing fingers and PTSD are real here).

In the end, my two cents from playing this game is I didn't need to 60 dollars to live through my favorite game characters never-ending trauma, I could have just looked at the local news or continued to see all the trauma the world offers naturally. The only reason I picked up this game despite the chance of losing my favorite characters was because the end might have come out and given the viewers hope. While Naughty Dog attempted to do this, it fell short for me and I only felt empty and disappointed on the inside.

    Thanks, Naughty Dog.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game had SO much potential but the story drags it down like an anchor. And no, it's not because of SJWs, like some other reviews claim. Yes, Ellie has a relationship with Dina (weird name choice), but other than a few seconds of awkward scenes, it's nothing out of any ordinary video game relationship. Why I and other fans are upset is because of the following:

    1) Joel, the hero who took Ellie 3,000 miles across the country while killing hundreds of infected and bandits, is killed in the most anti-climactic fashion possible, within 30 minutes of starting the game. He and Tommy SAVE Abby from certain death, she brings them back to her group of friends, then Joel and Tommy OPENLY give out their names to strangers (major plot hole #1). Abby then shoots him in the leg with a shotgun and beats him to death with a golf club, and here's why: In the first game in the last scene, Joel kills a doctor in Seattle who is pointing a scalpel at him trying to prevent Joel from taking Ellie away, saying "think of all the lives we'll save". That doctor turns out to be Abby's father.

    2) The new character additions, aside from Abby, have little to no backstory whatsoever and they don't feel important at all to the plot. When you start the game, you're introduced to the thriving survivor village in Jackson, Wyoming, and one of the first characters you meet is Jesse. He is present for only a small portion of the game, but helps you kill enemies as you progress through war-torn and infected areas and begins to grow on you, only to be suddenly and pathetically shot in the head by Abby as he's opening a door. On Abby's playthrough, she is about to be executed by the Seraphites along with an Asian girl named Yara until Yara's little brother Lev rescues them both. Yara has her forearm crushed by a Seraphite with a hammer and eventually needs amputation, but then she is shot dead just a few hours later by the WLF force invading the Seraphite island, so the story has you pointlessly feel for her having her arm amputated only for her to die not much later anyway.

    3) There is a really awkward, meaningless sex scene with Abby and Owen after they spend 5 minutes arguing and then pushing each other. It's especially awkward because of Abby's super masculine build that makes Owen look like a twig. The brief sex scene with Ellie and Dina at least had some depth and story development behind it, whereas the Abby and Owen scene literally means nothing at all to the plot.

    4) This game's ENTIRE theme is "Revenge only leads to more suffering" in both the main story and side story with the WLFs and Seraphites, and it's constantly hammered over and over again in an effort to show moral ambiguity. After the Seattle story concludes, Ellie and Dina are on a farm seemingly somewhere in Wyoming or Montana, they get a visit from Tommy (who is shot in the side of the head by Abby right after Jesse, except he survives because plot armor), and Tommy tells Ellie he knows where Abby went. Dina tells Tommy they're done pursuing her and Tommy throws a fit saying "Well I can't go!". To me, it's not believable at all that a 40/50 year old man would hold an 18 year-old girl accountable for exacting revenge on his brother's killer. Just days later, after saying "I can't" to Tommy, Ellie packs up and tells Dina she needs to find and kill Abby for her own peace. She travels from Wyoming to California, killing more infected and bandits along the way, infiltrates a huge bandit compound, kills dozens more bandits, finds Abby tied up to a pole on the beach (doesn't shoot her), cuts her down (doesn't shoot her), nearly allows her to escape before telling her "I can't let you go" (still doesn't shoot her), and, INSTEAD OF SHOOTING HER, like she had RESOLVED to do MONTHS ago, she says she wants Abby to FIGHT her. Prisoner Abby looks like a deflated beach ball and has none of her Brock Lesnar-esque muscle mass. They have a 5 minute fight before Ellie holds Abby's head underwater for 30 seconds, then decides she can't kill her because of plot reasons. Abby takes Lev and sails off, Ellie sits on the beach crying. Seemingly weeks or months later, Ellie returns to the farm where she and Dina had lived only to find Dina has left. Ellie then has a flashback of getting angry at Joel for not letting her die to develop a vaccine, says she will try to forgive him, and the game ends.

    5) Related to #4, the game more or less tells you that Ellie knew Joel was lying to her the whole time about what happened in Seattle until she makes him confess. If she was really set on dying so that a vaccine could be created, she could have gone back or worked with another surgeon in Wyoming. Either way, the game tries to make Joel look like a bad person for saving her life when 99% of fathers or father-figures would have done the same thing.

The game itself is worth a playthrough, but the story is incredibly poor compared to Part 1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First every review because wow! So I had hopes the narrative wasn’t that bad after hearing everything, I did stay as spoiler free as I could until I finished the game, but wtf naught dog. Killing the main character from the previous game to make a revenge story was a good idea, however the execution was hot garbage. We go through all the work to take revenge as Ellie to then play as Abby the villain to make us see her side and, I’m assuming, make us feel for her. Which in someways it did for me, but then you make us continue to play as Abby when we confront Ellie forcing us to beat a beloved character which was a BOLD decision that backfired immensely with everyone’s feedback being the clear example that it was a garbage decision. Everything up to that point was, in my opinion, still leading up to be a fantastic game. But the decision, again, to make us fight Ellie and win, is when you lost me. Have you had a switch back to playing Aly when we got to that confrontation making us beat Abby, I would’ve been fine with rest Love it. If you want to still kill Jesse do it, mortality wound Tommy or kill him I wouldn’t of cared as long as we got to kill Abby. Heck you could’ve even killed off Lev as they were leaving the island Ao you wouldn’t of had to involve him at that point. But it felt like you wanted to drag on the story from that confrontation which is a load of BS in my opinion. You should’ve ended it at that final confrontation and ended peacefully with Ellie and Dina at the farm raising JJ. That could have been at the perfect finish for this game but you squandered it. Do you let Abby win by making us beat Ellie. You then make us play as Ellie again to go and kill Abby which when we get that chance we let her go, then for more insult to injury when we get back to the farm Dina is gone and we don’t even know if Ellie finds Fina and they potentially get back together raising JJ, you just end it there. Honestly, I think if you chose to ha e had Lev died while being strung up on the beach with Abby thus giving Ellie essentially a mercy killing but still a revenge killing would have been better then what you decided. But instead you choose to make us go through all that to forgive Abby through PTSD on Ellies side and when we get back to the farm we find out Ellie has basically lost she loved even her ability to play the guitar correctly which is minor I know but still. I don’t even wanna play new game+ because there’s no satisfaction at the end. It just sucks because it feels like you had a very great story building up to the moment the Ellie and Abby confrontation happens, but when it does it seems you just took a dump on the story. The game itself is beautiful I appreciate the gameplay and how it is a even though it’s very repetitive, it just sucks that when you get that climax it feels like you’re falling down Mount Everest with no chance of stopping until you hit the bottom. I doubt it will even happen but I feel like you need to pull a BioWare and fix the ending like they did for Mass Effect 3 even if it’s just an alternate ending like choosing to play as either Abby or Ellie at the climax. Or just don’t make us play as Abby, the villain, and let us play as Ellie and beat Abby. Expand

Like what most people have said, the graphics are beautiful, as is the sound design and the level layouts.
But that can't save this game.

The characters are unlikeable, not to mention any character from the previous games are GROSSLY out of character to shoehorn in certain plot points or lessons that make no sense in the first place.
I never once felt any sympathy for Abby after she killed Joel.
That death was not dignified in the slightest.
If you are going to kill off one of the most beloved characters in all gaming, you damn well better do it right, and not only did they fail on every level to achieve that, they instead killed him in the most disgusting, out of character, despicable way I've ever seen in a game.
As if that wasn't the end of it, they then FORCE YOU to play as his killer for almost half of the entirety of the game.
These scenes are supposed to garner her sympathy to show her background.
The ONLY reason I finished this game was to kill her, and in the end, the game doesn't even let you do that.

tldr; They killed Joel in the worst way possible, in a way that made no sense for the character, had a character literally SPIT on his dead body, then force you to play as his killer, and in the end you don't even get to kill her.

The makers of this game should be ashamed.

    R.i.p Joel, you deserved better.
