Before I say anything, let's make clear something: The people don't hate TLOU II for being inclusive. People hates TLOU II because Naughty Dog destroyed all that the fans loved in the forest game, don't expect mercy after that.

Now, leaving that statement, let's talk about the game on a simple way, without spoilers: Great graphics, lame design in some areas, absence of a OST, more cinematics than gameplay. For another games it would be enough for a 6/10 or 7/10, but NO for TLOU.

2 reasons why I say it: 1-Legacy, which they ruthlessly destroyed. 2-Fake News! It is obvious that they paid and extorted different "gamer journalists" to evade this disaster, and they failed, NOW THE TRUTH IS KNOCKING ON THEIR DOORS.

And you... do you see the elephant in the room?

Why would Naughty Dog think it was a genius idea to play as Abby?! Imagine playing RDR2 as Micah after killing Arthur...HELL NO! You will never see a single penny from me ever again Naughty Dog! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A huge, huge, huge middle finger to those who fell in love with the original game.

I couldn't even finish the game, and I tried so hard to. I usually don't completely quit games without giving it a ton of more chances, but this sequel just didn't click for me.

The pros are obvious—fantastic mocapping, animations, voice acting, and environment building. I also actually enjoyed the small additions to the combat, including the ability to lie flat on your stomach, craft arrows + bomb arrows, and leave scent trails for the dogs. However, even these pros couldn't get me over the jarring flaws.

Joel dying is what immediately made me think, "Damn. Maybe I should've listened to the criticisms before I bought this." He dies 30 minutes into the game, and Jesse dies quickly too. NOT good for those who really thought the main protagonist of the first game would play a physical role in the second game. The whole plot of the game also revolves around Ellie chasing after Abby and seeking revenge, but decides against it in the ending, leaving Abby to go free. Unsatisfying and confusing.

Playing as Abby didn't make me feel sympathy for her. I already hated her for killing Joel, and her backstory was part of such a minuscule detail from the first game that I'm baffled they even decided to focus on it. Abby's route was insanely boring and during that point of the game I quit. Her friends were boring. Her attitude was boring. I couldn't feel sorry for her even as she cried on the floor in front of her dad, who, not to mention, held a blade up to Joel first before he shot him. During the first game, we learned of the deep reasoning behind Joel's selfish behaviors, and we sympathized with him. By showing Abby as an angry murderer before showing her as a fellow human with her own drive and reasonings, it really makes players unable to give her any space to tell her side of the story.

The characters are out-of-character very frequently. Joel is a molded survivor with the ability to sniff out when something is off. It didn't seem realistic for him to so easily trust Abby and then, in the end, get brutally killed. Ellie is also not the happy-go-lucky girl from the first game. She is moody and apathetic. It didn't feel like I was controlling the same girl.

The game also seemed to switch its focus onto something completely new instead of what The Last of Us was built on. The story often revolved around human killers and a civil war between the Wolves and the Seraphites instead of the infected and CBI. It felt like the civil war was a bigger part of the plot than the infected.

The atmosphere just wasn't the same to me either. I can't explain that very well. Maybe it's the lack of Joel. I actually cried during the museum flashback with Ellie and Joel because it was so much like the first game, a striking contrast compared to adult Ellie's adventures. My Listen Mode didn't work, like, at all; could never see the silhouettes of enemies in different rooms. I also didn't like the lack of nail bombs. I've read so many alternatives to this game's plot and it makes me sad to say the majority of them were really better than the canon plot we got. I was really hoping the clips of Abby in the trailers were actually Anna. That might've been a lot more interesting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can’t express how mad I am. This community waited 7 whole years for this game, and while the gameplay and graphics were amazing, the most important part, the story. Left me crying, but for all the wrong reasons. They took an INCREDIBLE series, and destroyed it. You play as Ellie loving a happy life with family, and people she loves in the small town of Jackson, Wyoming. And everything is well, until not even 2 HOURS into the game, Joel’s head gets bashed in with a golf club. And this community isn’t mad BECAUSE Joel dies. It’s how, he rescues a stranger and gives away his name, where he lives, and follows this stranger back to her base where all her friends are. Turns out these people had a bone to pick with Joel, and they torture him with a golf club, and beat him to death. Now having seen Joel be such an unforgiving, cold hearted man in the first game, who trusted no one but Tess and eventually Ellie, it’s so hard to believe he would do something so insanely stupid. And if you think that’s where it ends? You couldn’t be more wrong. To put it short Ellie goes halfway across the country to kill the girl who killed Joel, Abby. She proceeds to kill all of Abby’s friends and eventually tracks Abby down. She gets the crap beats out of her. And we skip ahead about a year. Tommy can barely walk and can only see out of 1 eye, Maria split with Tommy, Ellie lost her friend Jesse, her surrogate father Joel and many others along the way. But now she has a family, as Dina (her girlfriend who travelled with her to Seattle with) was pregnant. But when Tommy comes back with a lead, she ditches everyone she loves to travel halfway across the country again this time to California to kill Abby. She gets there, fights her way through a prison and has a final fight with Abby, to which when she has the upper hand, Abby bites 2 of Ellie’s fingers off and instead of ending it there, and making everyone she’s lost, and EVERYTHING she’s lost not go in vain, she lets Abby live. And when she returns to her farm home with Dina, Dina and the child JJ, are nowhere to be found. In the end Ellie lost everything Jackson, Joel, Dina, the child, her revenge on Abby, Tommy, Maria, and her 2 fingers thus eradicating her ability to play guitar which is the only thing she can remember Joel by. And not to mention we play half this game as Abby, the ANTAGONIST just so we could have 6 more hours of play time. Like I said before this game had me crying for Joel Ellie, and everyone. But for all the **** wrong reasons the entire game is for absolutely nothing. And.... I have no words. I don’t, this community waited so long just to get a **** story, and leaving Ellie depressed, unless you want good gameplay and a horrible story with so many jumps from present to past don’t buy this game. Don’t waste your money and 20 hours of your life like I, and so many others did. You could get a better experience by watching it on YouTube. But all we can do know is hope that someone at ND fixes this. Other than that, I have nothing to say, I personally just finished the game and I need a break, I won’t be sleeping much tonight. All I’ll be able to think about is how sad I am that they ruined everything about this game. Good night everyone, and let’s hope this was all just a bad dream. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The most visually beautiful game i've ever played, that's ruined by the worst story i've ever seen.

I will start by saying this game is absolutely beautiful. The studio did an amazing job building this world, the ambience is amazing, the lighting is amazing. Huge respect for the people who built the visuals.

My problem here is with the unbelievably BAD and LAZY writing. Starting with Joel's death. The way it's done is absolutely horrible. The character we all loved from the first game dies a completely pathetic death that doesn't reflect the character. Joel spent more than 20 years surviving in this world, and falls for a trap that anyone would see from miles away. It's not the fact that he died, but how they've done it: It happens in the first 2 hours of the game, with barely any screentime to the character, and it is done by a character we don't know anything about.

The game just reaps out your emotional attachment to it, so fast, you just doesn't care about it anymore. There were a million better ways to do it. You can easily build up the main character's death in a way that we can have an emotional attachment to it, and to make Ellie's revenge have an emotional meaning. But it's not how it's done here.

If the game had built up Joel and Ellie's story before killing Joel, it would make so much more sense, and i, as a player, would be way more invested in Ellie's revenge. It's hard to believe they had 7 years to come up with a narrative, and still they did the worst thing they could have done.

We then proceed to play more than 10 hours as Abby, a character that we absolutely hate for doing that to Joel. The game tries to justify Joel's death with 10 hours of WASTED TIME going through flashbacks and useless sections of the game. It fails miserably in trying to make you understand her side of the story.

In short, the story is poorly written and VERY disorganized. The narrative is totally out of order, there's no character development for the main characters.

Dina has no development whatsoever, and Jesse is barely in the game. Jesse's death was just IGNORED by all the characters, he's never mentioned again after he dies. Manny is another flat character that you just doesn't care about.

In the end, Ellie's revenge meant nothing. Joel died, Jesse died and don't get to see his son, Tommy is disabled, Ellie lost 2 fingers, her baby and her girlfriend. And Abby just walks away, successfully avenging her father, who's just a NPC from the first game.

As an absolute fan of the first game, i am sad with what Naughty Dog has done to this sequel. They had 7 years to build the perfect sequence to the masterpiece that was the first one, but they managed to make a completely garbage storyline. Looks like it was done in the laziest way possible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game represents the beginning of the agony this beloved industry will suffer if we let it to. It is used as political weapon. The wining of massage over fiction quality. About the game itself, it does a terrible job trying to make us feel empathy towards the majority of the new characters, specially the new protagonist abby, as it tell us her motivation after she wins our hate. As for the original characters, the game deconstruct them with the only purpose of making us realize they deserve every bad thing they suffer, expect for the new cast. They act and feel like completely different personas. The journey is a cliché with an unsatisfying end. It is forced, its moral is empty. The story will constantly try to tell you you’re walking a wrong path, that what you’re doing is wrong, but at the same time it forces you to do all those horrible things. It spit in your mouth and demands for an apologize. As for the gameplay: the mechanics are something you already experienced on the first entry but in an almost perfect technical peak, being the “body to ground” mechanic the most interesting of all and a very useful one most of the times. The jump button goes from useless to ridiculous. The combat is extremely fluid and realistic. The AI is remarkable and works very well, but it can fell in being played by repeating the same movements and trick. The enemies won’t react realistically about allies being attacked and killed in front of them. The lack of new enemies is disappointing indeed, it focuses to much on human enemies and factions. The weapons are very reduce (six per character) and the customization is not as complex as it seems. In general the game will show you everything it can offer in the first hours, falling into a repetitive gameplay. As for the graphics and level design: It is sublime, the graphics (although many effects like the lightning and volumetric fog are missing in the retail) are as beautiful as you can expect. The environments are an achievement in artistic design as they truly make you feel in a world where nature is reclaiming civilization’s graveyard. The covers are way more organic and don’t look or feel as artificial as they did in the first game. This sequel wasn’t required, we didn’t needed. We were lied many times in the pre-release, and we were disrespected by ND team for not agreeing with well based concerns about its development. The legacy of the first game was killed of in a pathetic way of subverting expectations. In few words, the mo st important aspect of this title is its story, and it’s full of flaws, everything else is good and beautiful. But it’s not a 10/10 masterpiece, that i’m afraid is out of discussion. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into this game with so much hope, the last of us was and is still one of my favourite story driven games made. I'd stopped myself from seeing any spoilers before the game was released so I got it ready for another amazing experience like the first game but I was very disappointed, even after the disgusting way they killed Joel off in the very beginning I still had hope but as the game progressed it just showed how disconnected Naughty Dog are with the majority of their fans. This game is so full of senseless violence and hate and just leaves most players feeling empty and sad when they complete the game and don't even get me started on the whole section where you're forced to play as Abby someone who most of us hate as character and continue to hate throughout the second half of the game. Most of the new characters don't have much depth to them and are mostly used as plot devices and the old characters we know and love are changed too drastically, even when Joel is alive Ellie has lost that spark and charisma we all loved even though she's gotten to spend her life safer than most, tommy the man once worthy of his following turns into a murdering psycopath on this path of revenge and honestly so does ellie, its sad to see these characters fall so far.
Though this game has it's high points like the amazing graphics and the absolutely beautiful lighting through the trees and the gameplay which is pretty decent I would not recommend buying this game as there isn't many people who play this game for the gameplay, most of us are here for the story and this game does not do a good job in that department, I really wish I hadn't played it and never knew what happened past the end of the first game.

First, the pros of the game:
1.) Stunningly beautiful graphics and environment.
-The jungle has taken over cities and the imaginative scenery feels more and more surreal as you delve deeper into this world. 2.) All the interactions between Joel and Ellie are very well acted and captivating, almost on par with what we received in the first game. Now for the cons: 1.) The Story

    Now for the cons:
    1.) The Story
-Everything except the few times mentioned above with Joel, the story feels forced and unnatural.
-The characters that we grew to love in the first game, make out-of-character decisions in order to move along whatever story they’re wanting to express, which is basically just a circle of violence and vengeance that is boring and predictable.
-This story has a strong political motivation, trying to shoehorn in LGBTQ+ agendas, as well as new age feminism, forcing us into unrealistic decision making that goes against the gritty realism we’ve come to expect from its predecessor.
-The acting, taken out of context of the character and his/her development is good, even great at points, but when you insert the context of the story, it makes you want to either roll your eyes in mockery or scream from frustration, to the point that you actually want the character you’re playing to fail and die.
    2.) Gameplay
-If you enjoyed the first game’s gameplay, then you ought to enjoy this one too, because they’re very close to the same with a little bit extra to keep it interesting. However, it’s not nearly enough for the 25+ hour game time filled with mostly cutscenes, exploring, and fighting various baddies. They’ve mostly done away with puzzles, of which I found novel in the first game, and replaced it with anemic exploration. And the puzzles that they do have are painstakingly obvious, to the point where the only difficult ‘puzzle’ is finding the exit.
-Crafting has become slightly more complex, and with the increased options in advancing your skill set via supplements, you can experience a slightly altered version of Ellie and *unnamed* character, but it feels stale, adding very little newness.
-Everything else is practically the same. You still find collectibles throughout the game, notes that hold combinations to safes, and nuts and bolts to modify your weapons.
Sigh, I wish this game was what I’d hoped it would be.

Joel was needlessly killed off in the beginning and the story never made me feel sympathetic for Abby. As time went on me playing as her I grew to dislike her more and more. There was no pay off in with ending either. Ellie lost everything to find Abby and she just gets to walk away scott free. It just doesn't sit right with me and it really pains me to give this game such a low score. The first game is my favorite game ever and this is such a fall from grace. Which is a shame because when you first arrive at Seattle it has a different open world approach that separate it from the first game with a map that adds and crosses off locations. After this scene it is not Really an open world Game anymore. Majority of the characters are unlikeable and sometimes feel extremely unnatural. The trailers lied and a lot of what was promised is also lied (i.e. the new enemies, dogs were said you can progress without killing them). Story wise is just quite lore breaking in some aspects, quite unbelievable at a lot times (I.e. the library basement at the very beginning) and extremely unsatisfying at the end. Expand

First and for most I am a big fan of the first entry, platinum’d the game and have developed a fond relationship with Joel and Ellie as the protagonist. I just want to say that they could have taken this tale in any of many directions they could. But the one they chose out of those were the worst of the lot. Be warned coming in that the tale told here will cause your stomach and emotion to steer in all different directions. As you may know by now, Joel deserves better, I mean in any other way, I was all for Joel going out; but not like this. An agenda that did a deservice to the original, I mean why?! Graphics and presentation are great but the story.... Well let’s just say it’s... different. Expand

Sorry they lost most of me there. But, to then have to play the Hanibol Lector, Adolph Hitler (Abby) character was the final straw. Great graphics. I have a high end tv and the scenery and presentation was really good. Too bad story wasn't as good. I ordered the collectors edition from Amazon back in September. Total regrets. 3 for visuals. -7 for poor story, clunky controls, and forcing the user to play as an unlikable character the user struggles to empathize with. A linear game requires a good story...which is lacking. What were they thinking? Ego? Agenda? Trying to be edgy or something? Sheesh.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would not recommend this game be played by anyone. The original Last of Us was an excellent game. Easily a 8 or a 9 out of 10. Its greatest asset, of course, was its story. It was relatively simple; however, it was executed masterfully which resulted in a gripping and emotional experience that attached you to the characters and immersed you in the world. I had always thought that TLOU was always about parenthood. Specifically, the theme was that a parent will do absolutely anything to protect their child. Even if it meant giving up the world. TLOU2 on the other hand, is all about hate (according to the director himself). More specifically, it's about revenge, and how an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind (unless you're a buff woman, then you get to keep one). Honestly, the themes present in this game don't build upon the one's in the first game. TLOU took place in a bleak, violent post-apocalyptic world, but revenge was never present as a motif. TLOU was about parenthood and survival. Survival is still present in the sequel, but parenthood is mostly thrown to the wayside. Replacing it is revenge which is clumsily handled. In the first two hours, the beloved protagonist of the first game, Joel, is brutally murdered by some woman named Abby who's the daughter of a doctor that Joel killed in the first game. Abby cruelly tortures Joel before killing him and is even shown to take sadistic pleasure in doing it. Meanwhile, Ellie, Joel's adoptive daughter, watches as Abby kills Joel right in front of her. Abby spares Ellie, so Ellie chases down Abby to try and kill her to get revenge. After Joel's death, every player is think the same thing as Ellie: I'm going to kill that **** However, that never comes. At the end of the game, Ellie forgives and spares Abby's life (even though Ellie's already killed a bunch of Abby's friends). Abby also bites off Ellie's fingers and Ellie returns home to find that her girlfriend left her and she can't play guitar anymore. The game left me feeling empty. I wasn't satisfied or entertained by the story at all. I guess that's what they were going for, but what's the point of a game that makes you feel like **** Other games with unhappy endings (like Mad Father) usually at least entertain me or leave me with something interesting to think about. This game's theme was explained to me by my father when I was 5 years old. "Two wrongs don't make a right." I'm going to go replay the first game and pretend like this game doesn't exist. Okay, so the story sucks (which is a big problem considering how heavy the story is in this game), but it is still a video game, so is it fun to play? Yup. The gameplay is fun. Certainly an improvement over the first game, but it certainly isn't going to blow your mind. Unfortunately, while the game may be much longer than the first game, it lacks a multiplayer mode. I spent dozens of hours playing multiplayer in the first game, so it's a real shame that it's absent. It would've been a good opportunity to have some more fun with these game mechanics. At the very least, I don't need to renew my PS Plus membership. The gameplay still doesn't save this because this is a story focused game. The story sucks, so the gameplay isn't really able to support it. The graphics are great and the music's fine, but ultimately, this game isn't worth $60. The gameplay's fun, but the story is so bad that it poisons the whole experience. But I don't like to leave on a downer, so I've got some good games for you. Want a revenge story staring a young woman? Try out Tales of Bersersia. It's got a great story, great characters, great development, and it's 75% off on Steam until June 25th. You want a survival horror third person shooter? Try out Resident Evil 4. It's got shooting, roundhouse kicking, monsters, a goofy story, and oodles of replay value. It's only $20 on Steam and it's available on every console known to man. You want some stealth action gameplay? Go and play Metal Gear Solid V. There is literally like 7 ways you can sneak through each level, and you've got more stealth tools than you'll know what to do with! In short, don't play this game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are two things to say about this game.
First, it is interminably repetitive in terms of the gameplay, which is tight enough, but you can only watch the same shock value neck-stabbing animation about fifty times before you don’t really care anymore. Now it’s a good animation, and thematically you could say it speaks to something the devs want you to feel, but I say when that overly goofy bug-eyed death rattle becomes a major plot point that they want you to care about it loses all of it’s power.

This goes to the second thing, deeply, fundamentally wrong with this game. How endlessly frustrating and unsure of itself it is. Honestly, i love the accessibility options, as someone who makes use of them myself, any points this game gets goes to that attention so few devs pay. However, the idea that the resolution of the plot relies on, i **** you not, the ableist positioning that ellie can’t just learn to play her guitar left-handed, almost all of that goodwill is thrown straight into the trash. Abby can skirt the themes of the game and their consequences purely because she is bigger and stronger than ellie. This game is a paradox. It cares about differently abled players, and yet the narrative is more dismissive than anything i’ve seen lately. This game is not a masterpiece, it is a flawed, conflicted, contradictory exercise in excess stylized as realism.

I would like to stress i don’t care too much about the plot, the first was better but it wasn’t the best thing ever, so i don’t get the sheer rage over it not being the same game. Mechanically, this plays like early uncharted with a half broken controller. For every bit of smooth and satisfying gameplay there are just as many stiff and buggy moments where the game doesn’t detect very well especially when squeezing through walls.

The violence is great though, i guess. Also there’s something really problematic with the cloying attempt to get players to have similar reactions to Mel and Alice’s deaths respectively. Edge does not compensate for decent structure, no matter how many pregnant necks get stabbed with that same damn animation.

Borrow it from a friend, but don’t expect too much, certainly not a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, spent 2 days playing the game here what I have to say, the graphics and game play is good that deserves credit at the very least. They put a message but I didn't really care who if ellie was a lesbian. It was going cause problems for some but I was more invested in the story. I enjoy the beginning of the game seeing the outcomes of Joel decision but of course I gotten to that dreadful point in the game where joel just gave a bunch of strangers his name after savingthim. And they return the kindness of straight up murdering and butchering the character even though joel told ellie to not say his name so lightly anymore. But yet he gave his name to people he saved a d was crucified by them. One way to piss of fans. As I play afterward the only thing kept me going was to kill abby(Joel killer) but the more I play I realized that they were making ellie seemed more and more like a monster and it felt as if the game has lost it original idea that it was a survival zombie game. Then the next slip up I had to play abby and was force to watch joel death a second time making me want to kill her more even her action thought my time playing as ellie drive me to get revenge for ellie new family that was also getting killed off by abby
These next few hours of playing the game had me well killing abby every chance I got. Well when it was finally all said and done I was sick of the game, the story had put me off. I finally was at the point that I was able to avenge joel and abby new family but as the final moment where ellie had the upper hand she let abby go
Ellie let the murder go after killing all of the people that where responsible for killing joel. Let go of the person that actually killed him. I said **** this game and took it to my local game stop to get a better game.
For the graphics and the little actually game play gives it the + but due to a waist of time of a story and a journey that's at a - so I think a 3 out of 10 is about right. That story was ruin. The game made me feel like everything I did was bad. It force me to play a character I didn't like. And killed off a character for the sake of drama. For the last part it completely destroyed all of your efforts in the first game.

Although her levels were more interesting and varied. Just emotionally I didnt connect. Characters like Joel and Tommy make stupid choices, Ellie makes stupid choices and acts like someone else. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Close to platinum because I want people to understand that I have gone to the lengths required to fully review this game

Graphics - 10 - With the leaps Naughty Dog has made in the years since the first game, this game is stunning to look at. The environment at times looks unbelievably real, and the characters are beautifully detailed. However, some visual glitches persisted throughout my playthrough and some actually were enough to completely ruin my immersion in the game. T-posing, bright red artifacts appearing whenever gore occurred and models ghosting through various objects. Unfortunate but in spite of that, the game is one of the best looking on the PS4

Sound Design - 9 - This department absolutely popped off and created some of the most satisfying sounds I've ever heard in a game. Cleaning and creating weapons, shooting and reloading, and having a weapon make contact with an impactful thud all add to immersing the player in the game. Absolutely phenomenal work.

Level Design - 5 - Fantastic decision to use Seattle as the setting for the game, but abysmal direction for not utilizing it more other than a few sparse enemies here and there. Encounters can be boiled down to: explore wide open area, kill 4-8 enemies, explore some more. The level design is top notch, but with so little enemy encounters it can at times feel like a playable tech demo meant to look pretty with no real substance behind it.

Gameplay - 7 - Mechanically plays the same as the original for better or worse. The game is clunky and rough to handle at times which is to be expected unfortunately. This series was never well-known for it's groundbreaking gameplay so it's serviceable at best, but it's a shame they didn't attempt to .work upon an obviously aged aspect of the game.

Story - 0 - This is where the game falls apart. The Last of Us, regardless of what the writers try to justify, was about the relationship of Joel & Ellie. A man who had lost his child at the onset of the outbreak, and a teenager who had lost her parents travel together across the country to find a dubious organization known as the Fireflies. They bond over the course of the Journey and become inseparable. Joel made the decision to save Ellie from the group who was willing to murder a child for a cure that had VERY slim chances at succeeding, and even then after the entire course of the game along with multiple lore sources the question was brought up "Would a cure even matter at this point?". The second game immediately derails this by painting Joel's actions as the wrong one, and spends most of its run time attempting to show Joel in as bad of a light as possible barring some flashbacks that should have been the basis of the game to begin with. Ellie is reduced to a bitter villain through the course of her journey which is made to make the player feel awful as Abby & Lev are propped up as the "new" Joel & Ellie which wouldn't need to occur if Neil & Halley had followed through on "Honoring Ellie and Joel specifically". By the end of the game most of the cast introduced has been needlessly and brutally murdered by both Ellie and Abby. **** saying that Abby should have died, the whole game should not have been made at this point because the credibility of the studio has now been put into question and they've rendered the entire first game pointless because of their efforts.

This game series was brought up to its "Pillar of Gaming" status due to the story, nothing else. The fact that valid criticisms are being disregarded or generalized is completely disgusting, and it's such a shame because this game could have been a story about hope and forgiveness. Instead all that's left is anger and shame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLDR: Game is beautiful and has a great atmosphere, but the direction with the story could've been a lot better. The gameplay itself is slow but still fun.

While the message the game was trying to put out was great, I don't think this was the series to do it to. For a game that was anticipated for 7 years, it's really difficult to make fans of the original game feel sympathetic for someone who killed off a beloved character, not to mention that Joel was very anticipated for this sequel.
The Last of Us Part II would have done better if it continued with the story they built up years ago. It's not a matter of a woman taking the lead role or the lesbian representation; the story does not hold up because of the huge change in direction. The writers wanted to show that not everything is black and white, but this should've been done with a new series instead of a series with diehard fans for the original cast.
Despite that, the game is beautiful and fun but can be slow quite a bit which can be different from other apocalyptic games. The artistic direction they took with this game is amazing just like many NaughtyDog games. If only NaughtyDog could've continued with what worked in this series and experimented with their new story with a different one. The best moments of the game were the flashbacks with Joel, and I wished NaughtyDog had focused on that in the beginning.

Expand

Beautiful graphics and animation. A great world. Interesting start to the story. But the boring long continuation of the plot, the illogical and untruthful behavior of some of the characters, the disappointment at the end and the terribly made character of Abby.

As I play this game there are familiarity with the gameplay compared with the first one with extra function which is nice. The visual are top notch, kudos for game visual designers who put numerous hours (like a slave i bet) into building this game world. The sounds and ambiance are simply amazing.

But not all good games need visual. As a mainly single player gamer i enjoyed a great story telling. The story will drive you to play the game, explore the lore, gain interest on the every corner of the world and everything because of the story. However this game story is trash compared to the first. Petty revenge story? back and forth back and forth with nothing to gain. Just emptiness, I'm a husk of a man now after playing this. I guess the director have achieve his mission to get everybody attention, time and money but to what cost?

If Naughty Dog firstly make TLOU part 1.5 that can tell "other protagonist" story in depth so that we can love them maybe TLOU part 2 can be pass as well rounded story. But you hardly know the character with a just 10 hours of gameplay?? or actually less then that if you just count characters interaction. That's not enough time for character development and put us on their side.

It was unnecessary to kill Joel honestly but the main issue is the ending I just don’t get why Ellie wouldn’t get revenge on Abby playing this game fella like a waste of time and I hate everything about the story however the gameplay is very fun and the graphics are phenomenal and I’m not just being salty I mean red dead 2 killed off Arthur Morgan and it’s still regarded as one of the best games ever made at least rockstar has respect for their characters and understand that playing as these characters mean so much to us and seeing them die is sad yes but they still have him a nice death to end the game however naughty dog has no respect for Joel and clearly don’t respect their fans that make them money and give them food to eat and a roof over their head and treat us like **** I absolutely hate this and Neil is an idiot and should never make a game again if he can’t even give us a good game and also he knew this game was bad because metacritic won’t even let you leave a bad review and you can’t trade in the game in stores cuz they know that this game is absolute garbage 3/10 Expand

    Honestly the story....

Abby stumbling into Joel in the middle of a blizzard and the middle of an attack only to lead him back to hack his brains out. Playing as the antagonist (Abby) and only to end up fighting against the protagonist (Ellie).

Ellie killing dozens upon dozens of dogs and hunters only to leave the one person alone that she was hunting down at the end.

And then she comes back to an empty house, unable to play the guitar and unfulfilled for Joel. Awesome graphics though...

LoU2 is the greatest action movie I've watched this decade. As a video game is awful. And the first one is also way overrated as a video game. You should be making movies Druckmann, I really enjoyed the story and YOUR characters. Also, amazing work by the graphics team. There are some impressive graphics for such an underpowered console.

Wow, what a hard pill to swallow, this one.

Let's start of with the positives, the graphics, the environment and just the overall feeling of the feeling of this game world is great. Just very detailed and very convincing. Controls are okay, could use a bit more fine tuning. The real downside for me is just the story, this has nothing to do with being against any agenda or whatever

The real downside for me is just the story, this has nothing to do with being against any agenda or whatever you wanna call it. I just thought that the story was very badly written, Characters making cringey bad decision and completely going out of their own way. The game just made me feel bad and akward for about 35-40 hours and it shouldn't be the goal of a game to make you feel bad, right? It should be fun. The only fun you get from TLOU2 however is the technical level of the game, not that feeling and story that it throws at you. I mean Neil Druckmann is the creator of the game and is free to do what he pleases, but making unpopular decisions has to have unpopular consequences as well sometimes and in this case it just crossed a line. I could not enjoy this game, the ending just created a empty, numb feeling, like "thanks for your effort, but all you did was in vain". All in all a great game if the story would've been written decently. The story alone would get 0-1 points, but all-in-all I think that a grand total of 3 points is rectified.

The gameplay and graphics are easily the best of this generation but the story leaves a lot to be desired.

Considering this is a linear story driven game, thats a big issue as unlike an open world game, if im not moving the story along, im stuck. I wont go into much detail concerning abby etc but its deceiving that she wasnt shown at all in the games marketing campaign.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel like this game betrays the essence of the first last of us game wherein it was all about Joel and Ellie and how they would be able to survive the "apocalypse". This game completely screws over that narrative and turns it into a revenge plot that doesn't make sense. If we were to look back on the first 7 minutes of the original game, we can get a gist of what Joel's character is like when he left a family walking on the street in order to put his family first and the rest of the game was basically that Joel fighting to put his new family first. With this in mind, the scene leading up to Joel's death is disappointing to say the least. As it completely betrays Joel in the first game. Joel being the skeptic he was. Aside from the huge plot holes this game leaves. The game is also dull considering that this game was supposed to be about a zombie apocalypse and not a soap opera. To put it simply the game should be central to the apocalypse and not the revenge plot. If they wanted to put a revenge plot then it would be better if they had put it as a secondary plot point rather than the primary one. Because again this is a zombie apocalypse game.
The ending was also atrocious. This game is like kill bill if Beatrix Kiddo didn't kill bill. The ending would have been better if Abby was killed off in the end considering that Ellie already killed lots of people to get to her. I mean you have a lot of classic revenge movies and they always kill off the antagonist so then what reason do you not kill off Abby here. It's not as if they were like best friends once or some other dumb reason. Abby was by all means a character that everyone already hates considering that she killed and tortured Joel. Even when naughty dog where to make the player play as Abby to make them sympathize with her, the hatred is still there considering the player played the first game and spent most of their time playing as Joel and thinking like Joel and at the same time sympathizing with his decisions.
In any case this doesn't feel like a survival game anymore but just another zombie series that gets too political once they can't think of any another direction to take the series. Visuals are great gameplay wise it's good but a bit clunky sometimes and story is just the worse so that pretty much sums up the score and for the critics saying that is a masterpiece then I can honestly say they are right it's a masterpiece of every **** idea that came into a video game. The essence of video games is the fun that comes into it you basically take the fun out and it's not a video game anymore. This game is basically a boring movie that is at least 25 hours long.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok this is the first game I’ve ever reviewed on Metacritic because I want people to see a non-rants bad review. I personally believe that this game must have gotten killed by crunch as it heavily feels as though they wanted to change things but were unable to and hodge podged a story together. Playing as Abby does not make you like her, they did not do a good enough job at humanizing this character, simple as that. If they maybe started the game off as Abby it might have been different, giving us her perspective from the start may have helped us like her more but she’s also written to be frankly, unlikable. The emotions you get playing this game are also bland at best. The only thing I ‘felt’ while playing this was anger when Joel died. After that I just felt bored. When the story ends and Abby leaves when Ellie lets her go you don’t feel bitter or angry or sad, you feel nothing. I had to ask myself, what value did I gain from this? I honestly couldn’t answer. If you asked me this question about the original TLOU, I would’ve told you about the love for the characters and their bond. I’m that regard TLOU 2 fails at every single step of the game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Master Score: 3.3/10

    Game Mechanics: 5/10
-The feel of the game is generally smooth and easy to pick up. It doesn't innovate much on the first game, however. Too many of the dynamic events are simplified to pressing Square. The most jarring mechanic was the targeting, which left something to be desired to say the least. I found myself suddenly beating an invisible wall too many times while in a fight sequence.

    Game Design/Experience: 3/10
-The game design was lazy at best, insulting at worst. So many of the levels just felt like uninspired landscapes, one room after another. They tried to distract from it with fancy graphics (the graphics are phenomenal btw, especially considering it's on PS4), but I was seriously bored by too much of the world (I'm looking at you, Seattle hospital). They tried to make it interesting by packing the levels with lots of hostile entities, but they couldn't be bothered to even make more than like 4 runner models, I was killed by the same asian female zombie like 20 times throughout the game. The AI periodically flicks a switch from being able to see through walls, to standing directly in front of the player without noticing them. The gore is over the top and frankly disgusting, they way overdid it.

    Story: 2/10
-In my opinion, the first game was lacking in the character development department. TLOU2 killed off the only dynamic character from the first game within 2 hours. They tried to make Ellie more interesting by introducing Dina, but it was like they expected me to have a bond with her after 1 sex scene, it just wasn't there. speaking of sex, there was way too much sexual energy in this title. Too many times it felt as if I was playing a fan fiction. Someone at Naughty Dog seriously needed some sexual relief before they got their hands on the script. The alternate story arc with Abby was completely disinteresting, especially when it was told in the backwards manner they went with. I kept asking myself "when will this part end?" only to be met with more and more of Abby's backstory. Maybe I could have opened up a bit if the story were told in chronological order and the story writers introduced more of Abby BEFORE she killed the only character I really liked from the first game. The entire last section in California felt like it was just a rehash of what we had seen over and over again before, and did nothing to add any closure to the story. The first game had me on the verge of sobbing at the end, this title merely had me crying over the 17 hours I had wasted. I wouldn't be surprised if I heard tomorrow the script-writing team was a collaboration between a teenage wattpad writer and an 8th grade Promising Young Writers award runner-up. If the title were rushed I'd be more understanding, but this stink bomb was 7 years in the making.

Final Note: There's been a lot of debate over the topic of "forced diversity" regarding this title. Let me preface this by saying that I am a homosexual man, certainly not someone that's threatened by the "homosexual agenda." It was obvious from playing that too much of the game was just put in to score "woke points." There was no tact at all with how Naughty Dog introduced these elements, It honestly felt like a parody. The backlash this title has recieved is indicative of how poorly executed it was. If the goal is to normalize all sexual orientations in video games, its not going to be achieved by smashing a rainbow-textured hammer through all the pillars of good game design.
