This game is an okay game. The gameplay, acting, graphics, weapons overhaul and enemy development are all excellent. Contrary to that, the narrative is a bit discombobulated, in my opinion. People loved the original for the deep, meaningful narrative. I also found that I personally was not connected to any of the characters within TLOU2, in comparison to the original.

There’s been a lot of controversy regarding the whole gender perspective, specifically regarding a particular character you meet throughout the game. Abby is also built like a unit so, there’s speculation that she was designed with a gender bias (I’m not one hundred percent sure).

People who don’t like the gender movement in the game have been seen as phobic but, that’s not necessarily the case. The game is based in an apocalypse, so people are unsure why gender is even a ‘thing’ in the game.

However, people are more pissed off (including myself) as Naughty Dog seemed to have used Joel as leverage regarding the TLOU2 trailers, when in reality, Joel plays a very small part of the game. This is why people are so annoyed because, it seems that there has been a deliberate intention to destroy this whole ‘toxic male masculinity’ (mentality that men are supposed to have), by making Abby built like a heavyweight bodybuilder, and other aspects of the gender equality movement, specifically regarding a particular character in the game, and how Joel was killed by Abby earlier on in the game.

The whole reason why people loved the original TLOU was based on the narrative between Joel and Ellie, and their father daughter relationship. TLOU2 rips that perception apart, totally and deliberately.

Personally, I thought the game was okay but, I was not emotionally captivated as I was when I played the original. I felt the soundtrack and narrative was just up in the air, as you play Ellie and Abby throughout the game; Abby’s play through feels like a glorified side quest as she has no motives - her motive was achieved at the very beginning of the game which created an anticlimactic play through.

The characters you meet in the game are also very hard to like. Not that they’re ‘bad’ or anything but, I just felt the game design didn’t allow anyone to really attach to anyone. In the original, you meet Bill and I loved him because he was funny, moody, angry, sarcastic - there was so much substance to his character - this isn’t the case in TLOU2, unfortunately.

If you loved the original based on the narrative and bond between Ellie and Joel, then there’s a good chance you may not like this game.

The game is excellent in terms of build quality and graphically but, TLOU was built on the companionship between Joel & Ellie and their journey together.

This game is just a game without a great plot. Although it’s a good game, I got to a point where I just wanted to complete it to see if the ending would have made me feel, as the original did. Unfortunately, the ending did nothing for me, at all.

My score is 3/10. This is a The Last of Us game but, it felt like a completely different franchise. I also felt that the game was deliberately designed for a particular movement, disregarding the fan base of the original.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game starts a bit slow. It has stunning graphics, which was expected, but the mechanics feel dated, the story becomes unbearable when the Abby part comes along, and the characters are not fully developed. It also forces its way into you liking Abby, with no success for me. The ending with Ellie forgiving Abby was anti-climatic after you spend the game killing people to get to that point. It was a let down to say the least. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I should start by saying, I'm not much of a gamer. It's very rare that I even become invested enough in a game to talk about it & give an opinion. I wasn't even going to do so in this case, but it seems to be what everyone else is doing, & I'm seeing a lot of deceitful & unfair criticisms from critics & trolls respectively. I just want to talk about the game & what I thought of it honestly & I'll try to be as fair as I can, but of course this is all my subjective opinion.

I wanted to love The Last of Us Pat II, because the first game, in my opinion, is a masterpiece and is arguably one of the greatest video games ever made. It also presents an incredible story with some truly great characters. Joel and Ellie are two of my favorite fictional characters, & following their trek across a post-apocalyptic United States was an incredible experience. Because I love these characters, I was excited that we'd again be following them in Part II, this time with more of a preference on Ellie. And though that is the case for a lot of the game, I feel we also spend far too much time which characters we simply don't care about it, mainly the character of Abby. I think the actress who portrays her did a great job, but did we need to spend hours of time following her, in my view, no, especially given that after the first 2 hours of game-play, I (if I may be blunt) hated her character, given the fact that she kills Joel, way earlier than it should have happened. I hate the treatment Joel received in Part II; of course there's a bias on my part because I loved him in the first game, but I do feel like his character got dealt an unfair hand in Part II. I always figured that Joel would die, simply because it seemed like the obvious story decision that would push Ellie to become more independent (which in a way it does), but I wish we had spent more time with Joel and Ellie before his death. The counter-argument to that is "spending time with Joel & Ellie was the premise of the first game," & that's true, but Part II takes place years after that, their relationship has obviously progressed & changed over the years, & I would have liked to see where their father-daughter bond stood after all these years. If I'm being frank, I think Joel's death as it stands only serves as a way to subvert expectations, just for the sake of subversion, which is a poor way of storytelling.

Before I continue, some small things I liked: I think the voice acting is great from everyone, the graphics are incredible, the game-play is a lot more of an improvement over the last game (which is to be expected given it's been years since that game's release), and for the most part I liked some of the new side characters, like Dinah and Jesse. I also liked Ellie and Dinah's relationship, & I think it did a good job showing Ellie's maturity.

I mentioned earlier, but I think it was a mistake to focus so much on Abby, because I feel I'm not alone when I say I didn't care about her character and even hated her character (well, hate is strong word, but that's how I felt, especially after she killed Joel). She's a new character that we don't know, that we haven't spent any time with and have no history with, therefore of course I'm not going to care for her as much as i care for Ellie or Joel. I understand the game developers wanting to go in a different direction with Part II & want to show other people's perspectives, but the first game made it clear that it was solely focused on Joel and Ellie's perspective, & given Part II was marketed as mainly following Ellie, that's what myself & many others were expecting.

I see a lot of faux reviews, calling out "SJW stuff," or Neil Druckmann's politics, & I really don't want to to give any of that the time of the day because I don't care about them. I don't care that Ellie is gay, in fact I think it's great. I don't care about the other perceived SJW or political stuff, even if I may disagree with it, I won't let it get in the way of me playing the game. And honestly, if you're so appalled by gay characters or even Neil Druckmann, why are playing this game? Sure, obviously you can, you have every right to play this game, but when you know this game's going to piss you off, & then you rant in a review of how pissed off you are, I don't know, I question your point in even being here.

I do completely understand the double standard criticisms Part II is facing, especially in regards to SONY allowing a pretty graphic sex scene while in the past (& still to this day) censoring far less. I also dislike the notion that any negative criticism this game receives is the doing of bots. There are definitely trolls doing what trolls do, but there are folks with legitimate criticisms, & to ignore those criticisms does a great disservice to people who paid a lot of money for this game & were really excited about it.

That's all I really have to say. I wanted to love this game, but I couldn't.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was disappointed by the end. The story was totally lackluster especially considering the amount of time they had to put this game together. So many holes in the storyline and almost half the game dedicated to a character that no one cares about and running missions for people that were hardly part of the story development in the first place. The result are missions the feel totally unimportant because there’s no attachment to the outcome of the characters. So much indecision even in the final fight scene. Go after Abby again only to save her to decide to fight her again only to decide to save her again. It felt like they were trying to pull so many last ditch efforts to get you to care about this new character development. I was completely engrossed by LOU 1 and the combination of gameplay and storytelling was sensational. This time I didn’t care. Expand

But the story, the forcing of players to take on the role of Abby in order to try to force them to sympathize/empathize/relate to her and her decision making process is absurd.
Joel is done a horrible injustice in the game. Was there a way for them to kill off his character if they "had to" and not make the game suffer in the process? Of course there was.
Instead, Neil Druckmann (and almost assuredly Anna Sarkeesian) decided to spit in the face of all the true fans of the previous game and send players down a rabbit hole of bad story telling, with shockingly daft characters who make horrendous decisions that are contradictory at every turn and ruin what COULD have been the "Masterpiece" that the "professional reviewers" claim this game to be.
I have been playing games probably longer than many of the professionals have been alive for. I remember the first time I played Pong. I beat Adventure when it first came out. I had Colecovision, the Atari 2600 and still have my old Famicom NES system somewhere in storage (though it is long since dead). I am a gamer and I know that a good story with relatable and likable characters who make informed decisions and have sensible through lines are the most important thing to my gaming experience today. TLOU2 did not have any of that. Good for Sony and Naughty Dog for making piles of money, as that is (at the end of the day) what is most important to their bottom lines, but when PLAYERS say that this game will go down in history on the same level as The Last Jedi and season 8 of GOT, they are not being hyperbolic or evil...just truthful about how bad this game is, and how much more we (as PLAYERS) expected after 7 long years of waiting.

But that doesn’t change the fact that the game falls apart when you play as Abby. I didn’t hate abby as a villain at first. Wasn’t the best, but she had an understandable motivation. The way she ended up killing Joel was written so lazily and the character deserved better, but i tried to believe that the game could somehow make it worth it in the end. The stuff with Ellie wasn’t bad. Not even close to as good as the first one, but not awful. What this game fails to realize is the attachment that everyone has to Joel and Ellie. I honestly believe that there was nothing the writers could have done to make us sympathize with Abby. We know what Joel did and we don’t care. We had a whole game to fall in love with him and that won’t change just because one of the many people he killed happened to have a daughter. To make it even worse, when you play as abby it has nothing to do with Ellie! It’s a completely different story and it feels so disconnected from the game. What made the first game good is the connection between Joel and Ellie. This game took that away and then tried to turn the two of them into the antagonist. I don’t understand how the writers would ever think we could sympathize with the person who killed such a loved character. Expand

Now the story. Games like this are almost completely dependent on the story. If it is good, we can forgive other shortfalls. If it is bad, it ruins the game. This story is bad, and I mean REALLY bad. The developers even tells us "this game is not supposed to be fun". Well if that was the goal, they nailed it! There is nothing redeeming about this second installment of The Last of Us, and I can only hope that they do not make another...ever...
I won't tell you what happens, but only encourage you NOT to play this game!
Western games have fallen off a cliff into the abyss of agenda, and I would recommend looking to the east for your entertainment until this is corrected.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The low score is mostly from disappointment along with the poor story. I don't mind the bleakness or the revenge aspects. Infact, I like the fact that Ellie sees red after the infamous death scene. But this could have been something so much greater, and Druckmann decided to bait and switch and make statements that fall flat. Other than that, the graphics are phenomenal. Sound design is great, music is fantastic and most technical aspects are on par with anything else out there. Not only is this is the end of the console's life cycle but Naughty Dog had all the time in the world and Sony's blank check to get this done now they originally imagined, so I'd expect it be at this level. As far as the gameplay is concerned, it is almost exactly the same as the first, which isn't necessarily a fault, but it's not great either. But for a narrative driven game, they should have done better. Expand

How the studio came about in reinforcing that fact seems like an attention grab that did work out in that aspect, but failed hard in it feeling natural. Stereotyping Ellie to be more butchy with tattoos, how she walks, and overall less likeable and rebellious. The best thing about her personality is that she still is as clueless to life and judgements as in first game. With that aside, the story, minus the one early shocker, is very bland and forgettable. No surprises, no shockers, no big reveal or twist. Literally the story you are introduced after the epilogue is it. 23 hours of slogging and surviving. I find it hard to read a lot of the reviews that said they couldn't wait to get to the next story but because it was that good. For me, I wanted more story and hoped that upcoming bit was good. Nope. Gameplay is much of the same as original, which is not bad, but the lack of introducing key new elements is sad. The survival is much more easy than the original, presenting no challenge at all on normal mode, with exception of the extremely glitchy zombies who would seem to damage you regardless of dodging. Side characters are lacking personality and depth. Overall, graphics don't seem mutch better than PS3 version, let alone the remaster. Facial expressions seem like twitchy, nervous molds. Overall, the game is bland, slow, lifeless, and honestly feels like someone made the shell of a game, and knowing it sucked, banked on Ellie's sexual orientation to save the day. Obviously critics in mainstream will all praise, not to anger anyone for speaking likely the true opinion.oh, and that huge twist people are talking about (not one at end of epilogue) is not a twist at all as it is assumed in the opening sequence. Let’s start of with the thing that pissed me off the most, the death of Joel. Joel is extremely smart in the first game, he literally saw a “wounded” man walking towards him, and knew there was an ambush, but in the second, he saves Abby and goes with her, without knowing anything about her. That is not how Joel would act, it doesn’t fit his character in any way. Then we have Ellie, In the beginning she was amazing, but once you play the game, she goes for revenge, and once she gets the chance to honor Joel, the person who she loved the most, after losing everything (including the ability to play the guitar which was the only thing that reminded her of Joel), she decides that she went far enough, she doesn’t get any moment to shine in the whole game, and doesn’t even complete her goal. Then we have Abby, first with no backstory and only 20 minutes of playing with her, she kills Joel, and that was very poorly executed, because after killing Joel we have to play with her like for 15 hours, and all their attempts for us to get to empathize with her fail, because of her killing Joel, with no backstory at the time. This is not a good game, it kills many fan favorites, and doesn’t do them justice. They killed the highlight of the first game and my own personal favorite character (Joel), and then they made Ellie suffer more than she should. In my opinion they should just leave the game here, and don’t follow the story anymore. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finally got my physical copy of this game today and played it. While i loved the graphics and detail i can say for certain that's the only thing this game has. It played like the first game with some additions, the forced open area searching was just as overdone as it was in Uncharted 4 and i am already tired of it. The way the characters are now from the first game makes no sense that they would not have changed their mindset from the beginning. The way Joel stands out in the center of an unknown group and then doesn't lie makes no sense, also Tommy being that trusting to a stranger isn't feasible as from the first game. Either way at the end of the day the revenge story stinks, Abby gets away with cold blooded murder, and Joel is a wasted death stopped playing after that and i want my money back NaughtyDog. Expand

What people are mad about is how the story was executed. How do you kill off the main character in the first 2 hours of the game. And the way he dies is so disrespectful to him. Then they make us play as the killer for 10 hours!? What a joke. They even failed to write a simple revenge story. Ellie kills everyone in her path, including a pregnant woman, but cant kill the killer of her father figure. 7 years waiting to be disappointed like this. Expand

The story in this series has always been the most important element and the best part is the slow build up of each character, the narrative actually builds the character in front of us with some detail and thought. The quality of the first game makes the weaknesses of the second more obvious, to me the writer appears to have zero emotional intelligence which as I say is surprising due to the first game. Let me try to explain what I mean.

My job used to involve giving very bad news to people (informing a person a members of their family had died) and this is how we would do it. I would knock on the door confirm I was talking to the correct person and give them the news in the most simple way possible. I would answer questions for about 10 minutes and then a second person would appear (Padre, Vicar) and they would take over. Why was it done this way? My relationship with that family member was tainted, he or she would always see me as being attached to a close relatives death, that is why a different person would look after them. To equate this with TLoU2 imagine introducing a new character who then goes on to kill a beloved character almost straight away? It does not matter how much character development you put in she will be tainted, unless she's a very likeable character (she isn't) she will never break through that initial feeling of disliking her. Then the game forces the player to get to know her? Instead of the complex relationship we originally had we got a rather cliched 'revenge' story, the complex character creation was dropped to push a painfully basic narrative.. disappointing.

I am in favour of people showing trans, females and BAME in a positive light but why would you put them on the side of those who killed a beloved character? Why not have them included in a positive light?

The plot holes have been looked at in some detailed and there's little point me retelling them, I just wanted to share what made me just stop playing this game. In my opinion if you enjoyed the first one for it's wonderful character creation and complex relationship (with a good balance of positive and negative narratives) then you may well be just as bitterly disappointed as me.

The graphics were impressive, but there were several glitches that ruined it at times. The worst part for me was the story, compared to the first it was sad to see so many elements that made the first one great thrown away. All stories and shows seem to want to kill off loved main characters anymore cause they think they are making something shocking and surprising, only to do it in the laziest way possible and hope that making it graphic and violent will be impressive enough somehow, so it wasn't original, it wasn't innovative, it was a bad move, I only every hated the antagonist after that, and lost even more interest when forced to play as them. The ending is just tragic and makes everything up to that point meaningless. Might as well have just stayed back in the town and forgot the whole thing. She would be able to still play guitar at least. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my first review for a game I am about to give. Please don't flag me as a bot Metacritic because of this. I played the game on Survivor difficulty and it took me 33 hours 41 minutes to complete. I feel like I have earned the opinion I am about to give.

Story(Spoilers): I started the game off vaguely hearing of the spoilers, knowing what happens to Joel, but not how it happens. That was the extend of my previous knowledge. I noticed friction between Joel and Ellie. I knew something went down between them where Ellie was not happy and Joel was slightly heart broken. The acting in this game was very good when you can convey such emotion in your face without needing to say words. I was broken inside after seeing what happened to Joel. Every person who saw this had the same heartbroken and shocked reaction that I did. We all hated Abby at that moment, but I'll get to talking about her later. Ellie and Dina had a sweet relationship in this game. There were some genuinely nice moments they had together. I didn't like how in the first 10 minutes of playing the game I was reminded 4 times of Ellie being a lesbian through a bigot and other comments made. Having genuine sweet moments of people in love holds more weight than making them feel like the world doesn't agree with their choices. Ellie is out for revenge and the story progresses rather well through the days leading up to finding Abby. I was forced to kill dogs in this game, which I wasn't happy to do, but I do understand in war these things happen. I love my current dog(Apollo) dearly and understand how it can affect people. When we finally catch up with Abby she is as evil as ever. We know why she wants to kill Ellie with all the terrible things Ellie did to Abby's friends. We just don't care. Ellie is who we saved from that hospital because of the love Joel had for her. We understand we doomed the world, but we just don't care. The best line from Abby's point of view was when we had the flashback to the day of the surgery. Abby's father is asked if it was his daughter could he do the same thing. Knowing his daughter would die on the table. Her father never answered the question directly. He just danced around it. When the time came where we had to play as Abby the entire community had the same reaction, disgust. We don't care who is was leading up to that point. The only question I had was how she because so ripped though. To get that built as a guy it takes consuming massive amounts of high protein/low carb foods. For a woman it is even harder to achieve. How angry would you be when there are people starving out in the world and some one decides to eat 4 times what others do just to maintain that build? I mean doesn't she have to go on missions? She would need to reserve possibly 8 hours a day to maintain that. A perfect example is the end of the game when she losing all that muscle from starvation. Anyways, at first I thought it might be a mission or two where I would play as Abby, but when I noticed the days progressing the same way as Ellie's story line I was not happy. I don't care if she throws balls for dogs or befriends some scars. When Abby's long portion finally ended we finally get a nice part where Ellie is second mother to Dina's baby. It's nice has Ellie seems happy at first, but than you realize that she suffers from PTSD. Tommy shows up and gives information on how to find Abby to finish things finally. I can best describe Ellie as a soldier who just never left the war. She is so damaged inside that she doesn't know how to live in peace. This happens to people all the time. Ellie leaves her for one last mission and after finding Abby, rescuing Abby, than forgiving Abby for killing Joel she heads back to an empty house. No Dina and no baby. The final scene shows the last conversation Ellie and Joel had before that terrible chain of events happened.

What started as a review ended up being a therapeutic release of my feeling towards this game. Does this game deserve a 10/10 by the scared game critics who don't want to lose the influence of Naughty Dog? No way. Does it deserve a 0/10? Not that either. If Abby was turned into a character more similar to Owen than I would have been happy. She would have seen the flaws in constantly being at war and just got tired of it. She sides with Ellie in a fight against a new enemy that has Joel die tragically trying to save Abby from this other threat. I didn't go into the game wanting to hate Abby. Naughty Dog did it for me and tried so hard to change my mind, but never succeeded.

The failure was not in the graphics, acting or game play. It was in the story. It had potential, but Naughty Dog dropped the ball and it rolled under the fence. Leaving us all as sad puppies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game play itself was fine and there isn't much else I could think to make it groundbreaking since they added jumping and such into it. Technologically speaking, this game is a masterpiece and creates a lot of immersion with the graphics alone and its cool to see all the characters I grew up to love in such clear quality. I personally am all for the LGBTQ+ progressiveness in the game but I understand why people are saying there is an agenda being pushed and that this game is too political, the way I feel they see it is that all of the male leads were either killed or crippled and especially some we grew to love were killed in ways that were disrespectful to the character themselves or just didn't make sense for the character to even be in the situation in the first place. Also, reviewers are pointing out that people hate the game for that reason and because Ellie is lesbian but we already knew that from the Left Behind DLC as they explored her relationship with Riley. The story is the most important part of the game though and all the amazing graphics and such mean nothing to me if the story is just not good which happened to be the case here. The story proceeds to villianize Ellie through making here hell bent on getting revenge on Abby for killing Joel, while making Abby seem like the good guy by saving kids and playing with dogs E.T.C. and we are practically forced to sympathize with Abby and even maim her as we play Abby which is just uncomfortable to do since most people playing (include myself) hate Abby because of her introduction getting us off on the wrong foot. I understand that the story is supposed to be dark and I'm not angry that Joel is dead (I went into the game expecting it since he would be fairly old now), but his personality was different from the first game since was extremely Untrusting of people. During the into of the first game he even leaves a family with a child on the street when given the chance to save them, while Sara was alive and right when the outbreak started (Just so no one can blame it on her death and Jackson softening him up), but now he's giving his name to a group of 8 people he's never met (all with guns), enclosed in a locked room while they are all giving him stink eye. He is a completely different person making rookie mistakes that don't make sense for a character as seasoned in the apocalypse as him. The stories theme contradicts itself by trying to make Ellie consumed by revenge when Abby was just as consumed with revenge herself, yet the game wants us to hate Ellie and love Abby. The quote used with this game is "Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves." but honestly, you only need one at the end of the game because Ellie has lost absolutely everything for absolutely no reason since she doesn't even end up killing Abby for some flawed 2 second change in motivation. While Abby ends up walking away with Lev, implying that they have a relationship similar to the one of Joel and Ellie in the first game, which we know was something to look forward to. The message I perceive from the story is if you embark on a journey of revenge, just commit to it since Abby walked away with a lot more than Ellie did despite embarking on her on revenge story. Just wanted to get my frustrations out of the way since I loved the first game (and the DLC for it) a lot but was so disappointed to wait 7 years to see all of my favorite characters ruined so hopelessly and for no reason other than "Shock Value". Graphics: Good, but in-game the downgrade from what Naughty Dog showed in the gameplay trailers are visible.

But the main point for me is the deconstruction of characters in this game and of course, Abby. Why?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Being honest here. The game Is **** The pros come from the graphics and game play. Other than that the game fails. From forced political agenda to horrible story writing. To be clear Im not a homophobic or transphobic person. I have plenty of gay and trans friends, the problem though is the game forces it into your brain with a hammer and nail expecting a pat on the back for its courageous effort. Second problem is the story itself. Joel dies within the first few hours, now im not upset that he died im upset with how he died. By some random character not explained or mentioned in the first game who threw a temper tantrum because Joel killed her daddy because he was literally about to butcher Ellie without even thinking to ask If Ellie wanted to go through with it. Ellie in the first game I think would definitely sacrificed her self for the cure if given the choice, but she doesn't get a say and Joel has to save her. Not to mention Joel dies stupidly Joel from the first game would never trust random strangers so easily or give his real name out so carefree. THEN afterwords im forced to play about 10+ hours of abby who at this point who i **** despise and they make no attempt to make me have sympathy to words her. The true fans and people who loved the first game and the relationship between Ellie and Joel Hate this game because it ****s on the first game. In the first game when it revealed Ellie was gay that was fine because it was subtle but there, yet this game it shoves all the SJW agenda down your throat. If they had built up Joel's death slowly while giving us some motivation for abby while building her character and have us develop sympathy for her maybe once Joel trusts abby and reveals his true name thats what sparks her anger again but plans it out instead of just beating him with a golf club in the first hours of the game THAT would have had fans respond alot better than the current game maybe even better have Abby be conflicted about killing Joel once he shows his kindness and compassion for those close to him and have her have second thoughts about revenge but no shes a black and white character with no feelings or sympathy to her in duller than a wooden sword. This isnt a **** bot this is a real person with there true thoughts about that game if this gets removed or silenced by metacritic it just proves they cant handle criticism and are children who pitch a fit when there agenda falls short Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok. I think i should start with the cool things: First of all, the gameplay is just like the original game, so that's a good thing. The music really fits, and the visuals are really beautiful. I can hear, i can see, and i can play in a wonderful way.

So, why do i give it a 3?
    The story, THE **** STORY

WHY DID THEY DO MY DEAR JOEL DIRTY LIKE THAT? WHY?
Because muh revenge. Just because of that.

I'm going to be absolutely honest. I wouldn't have minded if Joel had died. BUT DEMONIZING HIM AND BEATING HIM TO A PULP? REALLY? There are better ways to manage things like that.
Now, Abbie. ABBIE. I really had a bad time playing as her, i couldn't forgive her for Joel, and the only thing i liked about her side of the story was the Scar brothers (though they killed one of them, so..... Yeah, that was really **** overall)

Another thing i found really sad and disappointing was the ending. YOU DO A WHOLE **** ADVENTURE TO SEATTLE, YOU TRY TO AVENGE JOEL (your "dad"/parental figure), WHICH GOT BEATEN UP AND KILLED IN FRONT OF YOU, YOUR (PREGNANT) GIRLFRIEND ALMOST GETS KILLED, YOUR FRIEND/BIOLOGIC DAD OF YOUR KID GETS SHOT IN THE FACE AND DIES RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU, So you spend a long time trying to rebuild your life, with constant traumas from the past, and your "uncle" (which was also deformed by the same bad guy) finally gives you a hint of where THE VILLAIN may be.
So you decide to risk it all to finally get that sweet revenge. YOU FIND HER, YOU FIGHT HER, YOU WIN! But nooooooooo, i can't kill her, She aint that bad of a person, she cares about his friend (which you don't know at all so why would you care?) SO WHAT WILL I DO? I'LL SET HER FREE! I'LL **** LET HER GO WITHOUT ANY KIND OF REASON!.
What i'm trying to say is, the story really should've at least allowed you to have a choice in the matter, because for me, i would've definitely killed Abbie, without a doubt (but that doesn't mean that everyone will have the same idea as me, so it would've been great to have a choice).

Now, to wrap things up, i will say this: If you like it, good for you, thou art a free individual. BUT, that doesn't mean that i will enjoy the same things as you. For me this game was really good, a solid sequel to the masterpiece that was the first TLOU, but for every right it gave me, like the gameplay or the soundtrack, it kicked me in the balls with the story. I enjoyed the first half of the game with Ellie, though i feel that some traits of her where changed (but since she grew up it's all right); i DESPISED the second half with Abbie, and the end was pretty disappointing overall. So yeah, that's why i think it deserves a 3

They try to make you feel sorry for Abby but it just doesn't work, I'm not going to forgive someone for killing Joel because she's nice to her dog. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us creators have always described it as a story-driven game. Its story is, undoubtedly, one of the most relevant aspects of it. It's what differentiated TLOU1 from other Zombie-like survival games of that time and what made it one of the best games of the year it released.
Enter TLOU2. First things first: Amazing graphics, one of the best ones I've ever seen in the PS4. Gameplay-wise it retains most of the mechanics of TLOU1 with some AI improvements: it won't bring much innovation to the table and the developers decided to play it safe, seeing how well they work in TLOU1. The lack of innovation is accentuated by its lack of multiplayer mode, and The game becomes somewhat repetitive towards its end with the QTEs becoming incredibly predictable.
This could all be forgiven, though, if the story made up for it. After all, this is a story-driven game, and its story was one of, if not the best, aspects of its predecessor. But as you may all know already, the story is complete rubbish. Most fans would infer that Joel would die in this series, but his death was nonsensical and out-of-character, and the consequences of it were unsatisfying. The game is linear and doesn't allow choices to be made, and in some parts while playing as Ellie you will be forced to do acts you don't want to do only to have the game scold you for having made them, which doesn't make any sense. Compare it to games like Telltale's The Walking Dead, where you made hard choices and faced the consequences of them, or Spec Ops: The Line, where the game forced you to make bad choices, but you didn't know it at the time you made them.
Inconsistency is also a key part of this story. In the latter part of the game you play as Abby, the woman who killed Joel. Not only does the game NOT scold you for the horrible things you do as Abby, but it tries so hard to make you empathize with her and justify her actions that it even comes off as hypocritical towards Ellie. Given that Joel was a beloved character in the series, this comes off as just pretentious writing, bringing the dread and depression of the game to the point of exaggeration.
The ending is just as bleak, forced, and disappointing as the whole story of the game is. It almost feels that the creators of the game wanted this game to make you feel miserable for playing it; which can be a good thing, but they forced this guilt on you so hard that it just wants you to not touch this game anymore.
Games can get away with shallow and almost nonsensical plots if the rest of its parts make up for it. But TLOU never wanted to be one of these games. They relied heavily on the story, and the story was a complete mess. That's why it earns a 3/10.

Killing Joel in the beginning of the game was an awful decision, specially the way they did it, turning him into a gullible character, contrasting the first game. The way they tried to make Abby into a somewhat good character with understandable intentions was pitiful, by introducing her as just a stranger to the story that just decides to kill Joel in cold blood ruins any intention of an invested player trying to understand her, making the 10/15 (!) hours that you will have to play with her painful. Stunning graphics. Decent gameplay. That’s literally it for the positives which is why I’m being fair & giving it 3. When a game literally makes me not want to play it anymore there’s something wrong. There’s a point in the game where something happens to the main character(not going to spoil). Then the game for whatever reason makes you play as Abe. When that happened I was done with the game. I think I’m being extremely generous with my 3 being that the game made me STOP PLAYING. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What I do not understand about this game is the logic behind the actions of the characters. Let's take Abigail as an example. Her father was killed by Joel in the first game. Her reaction was to take revenge on Joel for murdering her father. Due to the post apocalyptic nature of the game there is no society, ergo it can be argued that what Abigail did to Joel is a logical reaction to what Joel did to her (indirectly via killing her father). The game goes on and you see the characters interact with each other in various ways. The voice acting is top notch. The visuals/gameplay are all top tier. I will not be talking about the technical aspect of the game any further since that point has been stated many times by thousands of people. My gripe is with the story and how the characters act. Let's talk about Mel first. Mel is a pregnant woman who chooses to go to the front lines during the part of the game where you control Abigail. Why? You are pregnant?????? You can physically see her huge belly. What kind of backwards thinking is this? Not only are you endangering your life and the life of your unborn child, you are risking the life of Abigail and Emanuel (and the dog too). This is not the type of game that can allow this type of logic. This is not metal gear. During this mission they get into a car crash, fire fight with the cult, and fighting the mushroom zombies. At one point in order to get through an area Abigail boosts up Mel and you see her slamming her belly onto the metal thing she is trying to climb. You can hear it. I do not understand how this works? The other, and last, thing I want to talk about is Ellie's mission to get revenge and kill Abigail. Fueled by rage Ellie goes on a crusade and proceeds to kill many people, including the pregnant Mel and her unborn child, in order to reach Abigail and end it. This is the part that i do not understand. Ellie shows mercy and tells Abigail to leave. The moment this happened all the lives Ellie took were for nothing. Their deaths meant nothing. Their deaths were as insignificant as the deaths of bugs hitting your windshield. What was the character thinking at the time? Hopped up on all that adrenaline from losing two of her fingers (which is scientifically impossible for a human to do but I digress) how can she make the choice to leave Abigail after all that. I understand that games are subjective not objective, that means what i do not necessarily like someone else will. Yet I find that there is a line somewhere that separates subjectivity from objectivity. Things like plot holes and continuity errors should be objective not subjective. I find how Ellie acts to be illogical. It is true, hatred only begets hatred. And while crude the term "Revenge Bad" is inherently true. The problem lies with how the characters decided to act on these statements. Abigail disregarded the reason that Joel killed her father and acted on her hatred. After Ellie is sparred by Abigail, she makes a conscience decision to act on her hatred and try to kill Abigail. If Ellie wanted for the cycle of hatred to end then she should have stayed with Dina at the farm. The moment she went out of her way to find Abigail, killing anyone and anything that stands in her way, she should have had the resolve to see what she was doing through. Imagine john wick killing all those henchmen and goons and after reaching the guy that killed his dog he just spares him. That feels off doesn't it? Imagine Kratos reaching Zeus, after all the killing that he did, and he just leaves. This is what happened in the last of us part 2, Ellie leaves Abigail free. This is not the same girl from the first game. It is disappointing. if you enjoyed the game then I am glad that you had fun. I just wish that I did too. Expand

Naughty Dog expected us to play for hours as her character, and actually like her after what she did to Joel. I couldn’t stand playing as her and I thought that portion of the game was terrible. I don’t think Joel’s death was executed well at all. In the first game he is shown to be smart during the apocalypse, yet in this one he is sloppy and let’s himself get ambushed and killed. He died too early and in a way that just felt offensive. The graphics and atmosphere are incredible, the combat is good and it was satisfying killing the WLF members, but the ending to this game was god awful. It felt so disrespectful to let Abby live and have Ellie be the one suffering loss. The two characters we loved in the first game are treated so disrespectfully in this one, and the ending just made me feel so empty. I really hope that if there’s a next instalment to the series that Naughty Dog learn from this. And I hope to god we don’t play as Abby or let her survive. Expand

I got to a 3/10 because for a story driven game where the story is bland none of the technical achievements mean much, when you cant enjoy and buy into a story the ends about half way through, you already know who dies and what happens to side characters there isnt much in the way of surprises for roughly 10 hours because you can use your intuition and know exactly what is going to happen within those 10 hours your playing, Its also weird to see a story teller try to manipulate you into liking a character that is inherently evil and is proven to be this way constantly throughout the game. While they try and convince you the beloved character is the evil one for defending them self and being forced to do certain things that they could've worked around easily or avoided. This game is also not getting bad reviews because everyone who doesn't enjoy it is a homophobe because that would be quite the dilemma for me being a bi male it portrays the LGBT+ characters as ones who lash out when people defend them and not accepted by anyone but 1 person which is a shame because of how progressive this game is. It doesn't serve the community well at all as it paints it as a community that just wants to stand for itself and lash out at people trying to protect them and defend them from bigots, and for the trans character there are only 2 people who accept him which isnt a message (I'm not trans but I have a feeling that they wouldn't want to be shown this message) someone who is trans or is transitioning shouldn't be worried about is people to accept them for who they are. Overall the progressiveness missed the mark by having a negative light on most of the things that are concerned with sexuality and how people feel inside and how other refuse to accept them and when they are accepted they lash out at the people who accept them and defend them it makes us look horrible and its a shame they felt the need to go in this direction with the progressive characters. Finally if you see people saying the game is supposed to realistic and it wont have respectable deaths for every character, I raise one question, and that is how are women who are pregnant able to do things the average human probably couldn't with as much ease as they have doing the specific task to me it seems weird to make an argument about how the game is supposed to be ultra-realistic then have viably pregnant women go to the front lines and perform very demanding tasks.

All of the above is the reason I gave this game a 3/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rating up top, in-depth reasoning for each score below.
    Visuals: 10/10
    Gameplay: 6/10
    Story: 1/10
    Tone: 4/10
Overall: 3/10. I weigh the story the most highly as it's (at least to me) the core of the game. Such a waste of 7 years waiting.

Visuals:Easily only of the most beautiful games I have seen in a long time. The way they put Seattle together made it feel real and intriguing. Many of the vistas were simply breathtaking. From a studio known for constantly pushing the limits on visuals they once again knock it out of the park.

Gameplay: If you enjoyed the first game then this is basically most of the same. There are a few additions like going prone and breaking windows, but overall it's the same as the first. And to be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of the first game's gameplay either. But that's not what made the first game special. I will say that in the first game Naughty Dog seemed to realize that their core gameplay loop wasn't exciting enough to take a huge amount of the game, so there were a lot more environmental puzzles (lots of ladder moving, some people liked it others didn't) that helped cut up the shooting and stealthing into smaller chunks at a time. This game feels like there is a lot more time spent shooting and stealthing with very very few environmental puzzles thrown in, which I feel like is a big missed opportunity. Overall a decent gameplay loop but nothing special or innovative about it, but again that's not why I nor others loved the first game.

Story: Because I guess there was a story. Why does this story suck? For a number of reasons. Firstly, the killing of Joel. It was such a disservice and they spit on his grave. Specifically the way it was done. There is a world where in this game Joel dies and it is heart wrenching and painful but it is part of the story and becomes one of the most poignant events in modern video gaming history. It could have been done right. But how Joel dies is antithetical to who he is. The supremely cautious man who once ran over somebody because he simply thought it might be an ambush waltzes in to an ambush nonchalantly and is killed for it. Who Joel is as a character is not the type of person to be caught in this type of situation. Full stop. When Joel was killed I was so angry I almost put the game down. Not because he died, but because of how Naughty Dog did him. In a word, dirty. Then I have to play as Abby. Here is where the pacing and sequencing of the game break down for me. If this is the story they wanted to tell I needed Abby to be "humanized" before I see her kill Joel. I put that in quotation marks because introducing this character at the start of the game as the murderer of one of my most beloved characters in all of gaming leaves absolutely no room for her to become humanized anymore. At this point the next 10 hours of the game become a slog I have to get through because I no longer care about Abby, and the story they write for her is not nearly moving enough nor her character likable enough to get over the hurdle they themselves placed. But I continue playing. Why? Obviously so I can get back in Ellie's shoes and murder this piece of garbage. And they disappoint again. You don't even get to kill her. This robs me of the only payoff getting me through the game. Again, it's a story-driven game and that's why I'm here. The core gameplay loop isn't enough to give me a fulfilling experience, I'm in it for the freaking story. I don't get any more of one of the best written relationships in gaming history (Joel and Ellie), and I don't even get that much Ellie, or at least it seemed like it after playing as Abby for so long. Ellie herself kills so many people during her quest, but in the end doesn't kill Abby. Why? I don't know. Flashbacks? It's not what Joel would have wanted? I find this reasoning hard to believe as Abby has done just about everything a person could do to be deserving of murder and after leaving a trail of bodies behind her Ellie just walks away. Ugh.

Tone:At this point I've written too much, so I'll keep it brief. The first game was beautiful because of the vein of hope that ran through it. In a grim, brutal world there were constant rays of hope shining through. Characters you would meet that could smile and cause you to laugh. Most of those moments revolve around Ellie (I mean, who can forget the giraffe?). So even in a very dark world you saw hope for the future. This game has changed Ellie to a much darker version of herself. I can buy this, but now there is no overarching message of hope, nobody to deliver it. There are almost no bright spots, and they are few and far enough between to be utterly forgettable.

Conclusion: Naughty Dog took just about everything I loved in the first game and all my hopes for the second game and smashed them to pieces within the first two hours of the game. Beautiful graphics can't make up for that. Ugh.

Joel deserved better , I don't mind him dying was kinda expecting it (I avoided all spoilers before playing this) could have sent him off in an epic way like protecting Ellie or how John Marston died. To top it off they made me play as Abby and no matter how hard they tried to humanize her it just didn't work for me I already knew Abby had her reasons to kill Joel with out them tryna explain it to me for 10 hours and trying to make her likeable they tried so hard to make Ellie seem like the bad guy killing the pregnant lady killing the dog etc but each time Ellie killed Abby's friend it was self defence and or she showed emotion/regret where as Abby in that theatre scene was about to slit Deena's throat by while saying good despite knowing she is pregnant. And all the events in Jackson Seattle had no emotional toll on Abby she was happy dandy looking for fire flies where as Ellie was an emotional wreck and had PTSD. The lesson which naughtydog is tryna teach was revenge= bad thn why did it have the opposite effect on me where I wanted revenge till the end of the game and they couldn't even give me that, Joel wasn't avenged and Ellie lost everything.

As a fan of the first game, it sucks to give its sequel such a low score. I'll get the pros out of the way. For the most part, the graphics are a huge improvement with the lighting and animations. Although, the new models look a little off. I preferred the older models. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing like the last game and its pretty easy to get immersed into the game. Gameplay-wise,As a fan of the first game, it sucks to give its sequel such a low score. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing like the last game and its pretty easy to get immersed into the game. Gameplay-wise, it plays pretty much like the original did. I was hoping for a few more improvements to it, but I can't complain. However, by far the worst thing about this game is the story. It is such a disappointment compared to the original. There's little character development for the new characters that are introduced, and characters from the previous game make decisions that they never would. The story itself is rather lack-luster too, with it being a generic revenge story and saying "Revenge is bad, look at these consequences." The original Last of Us was praised for its amazing characters and story, so due to how bad it is in this game, I have to give it a 3. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. False advertising they showed older joel and ellie but in the game the scenes are flashbacks with young joel and ellie so that annoyed me, they really did us like how abby did joel.

Abby was the worsr part of the game mainly due to not being likable because well she killed joel... To top it all off they force you to beat up ellie as Abby... Why? Who thought that waa a smart move, who thought playig as abby was a good idea..

The ending waa a disgrace abby gets to have her revenge get a new best friend and to top it all off has a lead to a group who can help her.

Meanwhile Ellie gets nothing and loses everything.

    Now onto the review.

    Gamplay is a solid 5/10

    Graphics is a 10/10

    Story was a 3/10

    Ending 2/10

    Overall a 3/10

A flawed game, the last of us really was more like the worst for us.

Gameplay is fun. Doesnt make up for the terrible storyline though. They butchered everything that made me love the first game. Thanks for wasting my time.

This game was not what was advertised on trailers and it's so deceitful. Do not let the "good" reviews fool you. I pre-ordered the game and painfully played through it. Not once did i feel any resolve. With that said the game is a technical wonder, which does many things right... however when you have a bad story on a story driven game, then what else can you expect but low user reviews. This game was not what was advertised on trailers and it's so deceitful. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
