    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 has amazing graphics, a gameplay pretty much just like the TLOU 1, a **** character development and a ****tier plot. Joel's death was necessary, but the way it happened, how it happened was a fiasco. Joel was a veteran of that world, fought for decades in that horrible environment. Joel didn't trust people right of the bat, but with Abby, he just straight up gave his REAL name and went to where Abby's group was located... Joel's death was even more meaningless for the fact he didn't even know who Abby was... Joel died to a **** random ass person in his point of view!!! That's why he would never trust someone just like that!!! Joel deserved a better a way to go... And then after having Joel die like that, you have to play as **** Abby. Abby is not a sympathetic character and I can't come close to like her. She kills Jesse like if he was a random, blows **** TOMMY'S HEAD like he was a waste of a character... I have so much that I wanna say about this game, but every time I think from beginning to end, finding things to say, my blood just boils... Naughty Dog, you have ruined the best story driven game ever created. **** you. Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The graphics are simply incredible. Combat/gameplay have noticeably improved. However, this is a story-driven game. Riddled with plot holes, out-of-character moments, illogical behavior, and terrible plot choices, The Last of Us Part 2 disintegrates everything that fans of the previous game loved — the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Two hours into the game, a main character is killed without context by somebody random, then you play as this random character, hunting another main character at some point, almost killing that main character. Two hours in, I no longer wanted to play the game. I found myself rooting for my “enemy” main character to kill my controlled character. Other times, I made my controlled character jump off cliffs because this is the only move that made sense, given what she did to the main characters we loved. Instead of developing the relationship between Joel and Ellie to the end, this game simply rips it to shreds in 2 hours out of a 25-30 game. Do not buy. Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really shows how untrustworthy critics are. This game might be the worst sequel to a video game ever, the only pros being It's graphics and atmosphere. The story is horrible and filled with plotholes, unlikable characters. The only good characters from TLOU are different, Ellie isn't the same, Tommy isn't the same, Joel isn't the same, and hell, even Maria isn't the same. Ellie is now a girl with no emotion who is only looking to "kill everyone". Dina and Jessie also feel empty, like they're there for no reason.

    Gameplay feels exactly the same. There were barely any changes to it except a prone and jump (which you barely ever use in the game). For 2020 it feels outdated and boring.

    Ending is horrible, unsatisfying and feels like you wasted those 20+ hours that this game gives you. So, final thoughts: the game is gorgeous and is Naughty Dog's best looking game, but all of that beauty is drowned out by a story so horrible, that I just wanted to quit this game and never play it again. For 60£, this game is a mess. I would never like to see a 3rd game, ever.

    Would not recommend.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I cant believe how bad this game is, especially when compared to the last one. The game play is the same as last time and primarily is a standard stealth combat mechanic geared towards pushing the story forward. since the game play is still enjoyable like the last game I wont rate this zero.

    The story however is a 0/10, the narrative is disjointed and full of flashbacks. the characters are unlikable. making the main character the killer of the previous games beloved characters is a horrible decision. finally the finale of the game ends up like a soggy noodle. How can ones narrative have you kill hundreds of people and then wuss out at the end and let your target go. The story is fundamentally unenjoyable and makes one not care for playing the game.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was at the end as like a footnote but i feel it needs to be here as its more or less my raw emotional reaction to the game and is needed to understand the failure to maintain structure in the review proper. I'm a huge fan of TLOU and was more excited for this games release than excited for my own birthday party. I tried to make this review impersonal but it just ended up being jumbled and weird. That's because, at its core, TLOU was a deeply personal and small story. It's hard not to feel angry and disappointed at what this game is simply because we can all see what it could have been. I don't even know how to express it. it feels just sad, like they took all the good things from the first game and laughed at them just to come back when the story needed a "Hey, remember this?" or "Well this is what actually went down." moment. For big fans such as myself, this game just hurts, but not for any reason (like a good story) i wanted it to. Anyway, here is my more formal review.

    TL;DR This game is beyond a disappointment on all but one level.

    So, first I'll say this. As far as gameplay goes, this game is what a sequel should strive to be. All the previous systems are back and improve/tweaked in some meaningful way that makes them feel fresh, creative, and, well fun. However, therein lies the crux of the issue. The Last of Us (TLOU) was never became famous because its gameplay was superb. Rather, it was the story which caused fans to fall in love with the game. One might think Naughty Dog would be able to, at very least, create some interesting new characters, have a few memorable moments, and just overall tell a decent story right? Well no.
    None of the new characters in The Last of Us 2 (TLOU2) are even remotely as interesting, deep, or memorable as any character found in TLOU. They all either have one trait/motivation or are show potential just to be killed or squandered. Take Abby for example. Y'know that once character that's a bruit with a soft side? Yup, sprinkle in some revenge for motive that's her character. Even though she is the only new character to get any meaningful development, it's still that simple to explain her. Compare that to Joel. In his game, he is a cynical old man, a unforgivable human, a loving father-figure, a kind-hearted person, and more.
    Even more forgettable than the characters themselves is the story. It was simply a boring take on a revenge plot that didn't take any advantage of the threads the first game left hanging until far too late into the narrative. For about the first quarter of the game, the player is just wondering, "Ok but why did kill Joel?". Then Ellie has a flashback with her talking to Joel about the Salt Lake City Hospital incident and the player is immediately able to understand Abby's motives. However, even though the player is acutely aware of this fact, Ellie is still in the dark. This leads to a long and boring period of time in which Ellie is trying to find WLF members in order to track down Abby and learn Abby's motives; which, again, we already know. It tries to treat the scene in which Ellie learns this information as the big it reveal it should be; but, again, the player has known this for hours.
    But worse of all is Abby's side of the game. After killing all of Abby's friends and regrouping with Tommy in chapters "SEATTLE DAY 1-3", Ellie and her group are about to go home when Abby kills Jesse and corners Tommy and Ellie. The player readies themself for this big final confrontation when... cut to black. "SEATTLE DAY 1" appears on screen and the minor confusion from what just transpired is replaced by dread as the player realizes that no, that segment you played as Abby was not strictly meant to make you think Joel was safe, but was foreshadowing to the long and boring segments in which the devs attempt to get you attached to characters whom you have already killed. To their credit, a lot of time is spent on two side characters who Ellie never saw until the theater, however they are as flat as all of the side characters while basically sharing the protagonist role with Abby in her part of the story. They basically take her on what amounts to a side quest so that Abby is conveniently absent while Ellie's groups kills Abby's. Not to mention that the game has done a somewhat decent job at making the player hate Abby at this point.
    All the reasons listed here only scratch the surface as to this game's failures. Bare in mind, I only went into depth on very small parts of the laughable narrative. I never mentioned the any of the "torture-porn'-like scenes which liter the game, I didn't even try to explain the circumstances around Joel's untimely end (I could have made this entire review around that one story beat and not have room to say everything which needs to be said), I didn't mention the overt political messages, I skipped talking about the dialogue, etc. A full deconstruction of this piece is a Herculean effort and that honestly saddens me.

    The story is the worst in the history of gaming: you kill the protagonist and play the murderer with no explanation and you also play the daughter-figure of the victim, whose primary purpose is revenge. New features were added such as jumping and swimming, but the overall gameplay remains the exact same. The game gives you a variety of new ways to eliminate enemies, but does little to innovate in terms of actual design. A lot of scenarios are the same and the overall gameplay remains almost the exact same as the original except that stealth is a more viable option.
    As violent as this game is, the game goes through great detail to make sure that the enemies you are fighting are humanized. Whenever you kill a character in view of another character, that character will shout their name. Whenever you kill or fight an enemy, you can clearly hear their screams of agony. The game gives you more detail on these random enemies and throwaway ai models than the actual secondary characters within the game. The Last of Us 2 has a tendency to just randomly do things for shock value at any given moment. There are various moments where the game will invest you into a secondary character just to have them instantly die at random moments, with no time to think or process what just happened. It’s nigh impossible to truly invest in any secondary character because they will likely die off in a few scenes.
    The Last of Us 2 attempts to tell a story about vengeance and the effects that the violence can have, but it fails miserably because of the setup. The game starts off with a gruesome, shocking death that it never really recovers from. It attempts to paint ‘an eye for an eye’ scenario without explaining anything around the scenario until much later in the second half of the game. All throughout the game, it glorifies violence through ultra violent killings, many of which are forced that you have no control of. It attempts to chastise and criticize the player for being violent when the game itself encourages violence for most of the situations you find yourself in. One such situation is a Quick Time Event where you are forced to kill a dog. The game later tries to make you feel bad for this decision by giving you a flashback playing with this dog. This feels cheap and comes across as a very poor way of Naughty Dog trying to shoehorn in its themes.

    The second half of the game is no better. The game completely switches viewpoints at a key moment in the story and places you in the position of a different character. This is where many people’s entire investment in the game ends and is where the game falls flat on its face. You play as this completely unlikeable character who has been villainized for the entire game, and you are forced to go through a redemption arc in order to have you sympathize with the character. This is way after the character has done actions out of nowhere with zero characterization and these actions making zero sense. The entire backstory of this character is shoehorned and thrown in during this key moment in order to provide a rushed, slapped-together reason to identify with the character.
    The gameplay also takes a sharp dive at this point. The gameplay loop of run-fight- upgrade-loot becomes very noticeable when the game throws everything that it can to make sure that you cannot progress. Instead of puzzles or other things that you need to solve to progress, the game throws locked doors, randomly collapsing structures, and obstacles to make sure that your progress is as sluggish as possible. The game transitions from feeling akin to Tomb Raider with its puzzles and level design to feeling like a glorified game show. The gameplay at this point felt boring and unintuitive, and played like it was thrown in solely to give extra hours of gameplay.

    The Last of Us 2 being longer than the original game might seem like a blessing, but it works against the game in this case. The entire second half of the game plays like filler, with poor level design, poor narrative, and poor gameplay loop. Around the 15 hour mark, I was ready for this game to start tying things up, but instead I got hit with repetitive level design and constant flashback sessions for an unlikeable character.
    The game has some it’s best moments within the first half’s flashbacks, but even though they offer brief touching and interesting moments that shed some light into the narrative of the original, it felt very jarring being thrown in and out of the actual pacing of the story. Key moments are given cliffhangers to plot dump and narrative dump, and the pacing is all over the place.

    Unfortunately, the storytelling and characters do not match this depiction of the game. In trying to improve the visual fidelity of the series, they removed everything that made the first game so beloved. You are thrown into a generic, cliched revenge plot with empty characters and sloppily rewritten main characters, along with an ending that makes every single thing that you went through for the entire game feel meaningless.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m giving it a three for the graphics, environments and acting but that’s all I can give it for. Besides that, gameplay is repetitive (especially in the second half) and so are the puzzles. There was a point, half way through where you begin to play as Abby where I was wondering in the whole 10 or more hours you play as her, when it was going to be over. The game dragged on for an unnessicary amount of time. The story could have easily been told in 15 hours without the extra padding. The only good parts where I found myself not wanting it to end, were the flashbacks which were short. If this is how Druckmann ‘honours’ his characters, it’s so disrespectful. Almost as if he is torturing US who liked Joel for ever thinking that he was a good man in the first place. As someone who preferred Joel to Ellie, this game was draining to get through. I couldn’t believe how they’d treated him. It was as if they didn’t know their own characters because Joel was never stupid, there was no way he’d reveal his name. But that’s not the only plot hole. How did Ellie and Dina get out of the theatre when Tommy was the only other person alive? How did al three of them, beaten and fatally injured in Tommy’s case her back to Jackson? Ellie has no character arc whatsoever. New characters were boring with the exception of Jesse who was killed in ten seconds flat. Many people were here to see Joel and Ellie’s relationship flourish and how they were coping. Not whatever this cesspit was. All attempts to sympathise with Abby fell short because after killing Joel, there was no way she could be redeemed for me and many others. Abby is by far the worst written character I have ever come across in a game. She has sex with a man who has a pregnant girlfriend, she kills Joel, she tortures people, she only went back for Yara and Lev because she didn’t want to have a guilty conscience. There is no way, even if she saved the world that I would ever sympathise or like that character. Another thing that annoyed me about her was that Neil wanted a strong female character, but as a woman myself, why did you have to make the character more masculine than feminine to look strong? It is also not physically possible for someone to be that muscular in an apocalypse without eating nutritious food which would be scarce. If they wanted to do a game with Abby, they should have left Joel and Ellie’s story where it was, not drag them into this. But let’s talk about that ending shall we? In what world would Ellie actually let Abby walk free? You cannot tell me that after everything her and Joel had been through, after those years in Jackson, that she would not want to tear her head off. Why did she suddenly have a change of heart? It makes no sense. I and many others wanted to torture and inflict a lot of pain into Abby and we were no where near as close to Joel as Ellie was. Especially after having a flash of Joel again, you’d think that would be enough to send her into a fury. I also didn’t like how Joel and Ellie’s relationship was handled in the game. The first flashback was great but then they just destroyed their relationship, not even bothering to fix it before he died. She was way too harsh on him, especially during the party where he was just trying to help. At many points in the game I began to dislike Ellie, mainly at the end. She didn’t feel like the Ellie we once knew, you can say she grew up but she didn’t feel or even look like the same character. Also the Santa Barbara part was unnecessary, it felt like an action game or something out of Dead Island. I have been traumatised by this game, and thats not a good thing. I find myself crying randomly because of Joel because I see his death in my head. If it’s not his death, it’s the flashbacks to when he was happy. Because it’s brought out these emotions in me does not make it a good game. It’s only because I was so attached to him that I feel this way. This game tried to do something and failed miserably. As an avid fan of the first part and someone who once wanted to work at Naughty Dog, I want to forget that it ever had a sequel. Expand

    (i played on a ps4 pro) It took me 26 hours to finish the game.
    It's easily one of the best looking games on the platform, and sometimes visually reminds me of Red Dead Redemption 2 I am one of those that did not bother to read or watch anything about the leaked films or story spoilers. This is why things took a turn for the worse 3 hours in fpor me. You see.. im not a hateful bigoted person. I have no problems whatsoever with any of the HBTQ topics of this game or other games. What i do have a problem with in story driven games like last of us is a poorly written story. The story and plot in The Last Of Us Part 2 is filled with confusing annoying jumps between caracters, plot holes, and the new caracters are some of the most boring lot of people to ever to emerge in a AAA title. Joel was the hero of this game, and to have him beaten to death by some caracters and then let Abby (boring caracter that looks like a mix between Hulk Hogan and a hockey mom) that beats him to death be a playable caracter får a big part of the remaining game. That alone is just a spit in the face for the fans of the series. From there on the game is just repetitive for 22 hours, and some big parts so bad i allmost fell asleap. No pusdle solving.. Just killing people in a repetitive way.. The ending is really stinkin bad aswell.. Why a beautiful grandiose game like this gets a stressed poorly written storyline like this beats me? Don't kill the hero after 2 hours in such a meaningless way.. You dont kill Mario, You dont kill Lara Croft, you dont kill Joel and replace him with a bunch if people with ZERO character. It's quite obvious that parts of naughty dog got infiltrated by a leader with a woke agenda, and wanted to stir things up a bit. That's not the problem here. You could have made a story that fits your morals and agenda without f*cking up the entire game.. But sorry baughty dog. You failed bad on this one!
    The last of us 2 is a dissapointing game in so many ways. It did NOTHING to me in terms of emotions or curiosity.. Its just a 25 hour long visually beautiful and really bad and repetitive sleeping pill of a "AAA title"

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

    The visual presentation is nothing short of stellar and a few areas being so open invites a pseudo open world like feel in an otherwise linear game, allowing for enough freedom for the savvy explorers.

    Audio design may be hit or miss but ND nailed it for the most part.

    That however is the end of the good....

    The game meanders with one too many "dead ends" and shifting perspectives that attempts to make players empathize with the cast and yet achieved nothing as it is an impossible task to begin with. And all of it culminates to the most unsatisfying and pathetically hypocritical writing I've ever experienced out of any of ND's narrative driven outings.

    If you're here looking for a strong character driven and sensible narrative ala the 1st game, then look elsewhere. The causality in this game's narrative is as irrational as it is illogical to the point of stupidity and pointlessness.

    If you're into the gameplay then I can see a good 3 or so playthroughs with the new game plus option ls total before you get bored of it all or annoyed. Accessibility options are there for those inclined for a more streamlined experience, which is a bonus I suppose.

    All in all, if you're a fan of the original who are invested in the world building and characters, this game will come off as a spit to your face and a waste of 30 hours of your life. If you're a casual fan that are in it for the gameplay then have fun.

    I'm still wondering how ND dropped the ball this hard.
    Don't get me wrong, the graphics are excellent for a PS4 game and the controls are not bad.
    However, in a story game, the story counts and it's very bad.
    The new characters are bland and uninspiring, massive plotholes and the old characters have no good development.

Using Joel's death as a PLOT DEVICE to "motivate" Ellie for revenge?!!!?!?! You literally had every option open to you so "genius" Bruckmann says "Hey! Let's kill Joel! The players will LOVE IT!"

    This REEKS of idiocy that panders to the most simple minded individual and tries to pass itself off as "thought provoking" and "intellectually stimulating."

    Then to flip the script and be stuck as someone that just killed off one of the most cherished characters for the first game, with not even the illusion of choice at the end is INSULTING.

    People whining about "well you didn't play past ______ so you're opinion and review shouldn't count!" Tell you what? I have this carton of milk here. It may or may not have been sitting out for an entire week. But you can't have an opinion about it until you finish the entire carton. And you can't smell it. And regardless of how it tastes, you MUST finish it before I care about your opinion." You honestly think every single person that hated on this game in the first three days should not immediately go get their refund because they must endure 15-20 MORE hours of a game they hate before they can voice their displeasure? If that were the case, every person whining about Donald Trump should have shut their traps until 2020 when they can actually vote his a$$ out of office. (I didn't vote for him and he needs to go!)

    Do yourself a favor, if you're on the fence about this title, go watch a stream or a play through. The graphics and detail rocks, the sound and voice acting are good, and the gameplay will likely feel familiar to you from the first title. But if you're not sure you can endure 25-28 hours of a story you may or may not like, watch a few hours first. You'll at least know what lies ahead before you spend your money.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first Last of Us game is my all-time favorite piece of media. A true masterpiece. This game, however, was a massive disappointment to me. A major issue that I had (spoilers ahead) was that Ellie knew what Joel did, and should have been able to understand why many people might want him dead. In light of this, her revenge story made little sense to me at all. All of the light and hope of the first game is gone here and Ellie is a shell of her former character.

    I appreciate that great stories can make us feel negative emotions which are worth examining, but this story did not deliver on any of the pain of seeing two of the most beloved characters in the medium utterly destroyed. This feels like it was written by completely different people to the first game, like adolescent fan-fiction. It left me feeling empty and utterly betrayed, traumatized even. I wish I could un-play it, so that my memory of Joel and Ellie's original story was not poisoned by this cynical and bleak offering. Sadly, there is no going back now.

    I get that Joel had to die. I could have accepted that for this story, but it was just poorly done. For me Abby’s story was even more dissatisfying as Ellie’s, which I only felt compelled to complete out of morbid curiosity and the lingering hope of some kind of resolution. Why didn’t Ellie seek the Fireflies herself after discovering she could still offer the cure? Wouldn’t that have given her life meaning? Because the only surgeon who could perform the procedure was dead? That’s not convincing to me at all. I simply don't understand how this game received so many perfect scores. I also thought the review bombing was political, and some of it surely is, but having finished the game, I cannot rate it any higher than 3 out of 10.

    Many people have said that a sequel to The Last of Us was never needed. Nonetheless I was so excited to hear that Naughty Dog where making a follow up. I thought that if anyone could deliver on a compelling sequel it was Neil Druckmann and his team. For years I thought Druckmann was some kind of master storyteller, but I guess TLOU1 was just a one hit wonder —a perfect confluence of creative forces and time and place. My story of TLOU finishes at the end of the first game, with a masterpiece I would recommend to anyone.

    It seems that I must also add that I have zero issue with anyone's sexuality in this game, or the LGBTQ issues the story raises. None of this has absolutely anything to do with my dissatisfaction and disappointment with this game.

    Finally I want to add that this game looked stunning. Visually this is the most beautiful game I have ever seen. Next gen even. The artists who worked on this game are hands down the best in the industry. I hope they were paid well for their excellent work. The setting was awe inspiring. The game mechanics were also a satisfactory evolution of the first game. Animations seem eerily real. Unfortunately the game as a whole was an enormous disappointment that I wish I could simply forget.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A 7 year in the making fan fiction based off the first game. The characters keep no traits from the previous game. Joel's death is an insult to the character established previously, likewise for Tommy.

    At the end of the game it kept me contemplating on what i actually achieved, what new story got unraveled, and whether i actually care for more. As far as I'm concerned Ellie and Joel's story ended in the first game.

    Playing as Joel's killer is also cringy. Ellie knows killing is wrong and expresses disgust in her actions when killing human beings, often on the verge of vomiting. Abby is just evil, has no remorse for her actions, no humanity and no empathy.

    The whole issue of infected is not touched upon in the slightest. Infected are just trash mobs to slow down your pace while offering no significance to the plot. Ellies immunity also has no relevance except for the two times she uses it to her advantage.

    ----

    Credit where credit is due, the graphics, animation and gameplay is flawless although repetitive, but that's not a problem.
    + Abby's toolset is more enjoyable to play especially with her brute force. Punching infected to death was highly satisfying, although questionable with regards to safety.

    I give 0 (zero) points to the storytelling and not only because I’m butthurt about the events in this game, but because I’m butthurt over the attitude towards the fandom. I am a big fan of TLOF and it is thanks to us in the first place, the FANS, that ND awes in glory and fame. We have risen ND on a pedestal of a saintly status and have given them our love, our fanarts, our money - and have kept them relevant.
    And what have we been told? We don’t get to choose our favourites and we should not expect any fan service. Really?... Well then don’t expect any fandom service in return.
    My final rating conclusion:
    10 points for the talented team
    0 points for the writing

    Minus 1 point for the fact that this is a story driven game and ND had enough time to work out major plot holes and simply write ANY better story.
    Minus another 1 point for the deceptive marketing, misleading trailers and awful attitude towards the fandom.
    Here we go, honest rating of 3 points. No fandom kudos included.

    PS:
    I celebrate the LGBT themes finally finding representation in the Video Game community. (Even though it was awkwardly executed)
    As a feminist, I was also celebrating the character of Abby the very first second I saw her. She had so much potential to become a loved, unique and stereotype crushing Legend of a female character, but the writers failed her as well.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me get one question out of the way RIGHT NOW. WHERE WAS RILEY?
    I believe some of you were excited to see Riley in all this as much as I was? :(

    Lets start my review...The graphics was MIND-BLOWING . The combat and violence was BRILLIANT especially when they screamed and all had names. And gameplay was frustrating but GREAT, however, i felt it was very limited. Most the time your remerging through empty dark buildings or walking down empty streets than killing bad guys and girls or even zombies. There was alot less zombies even though at times they were hard, i still wanted to see alot more. Alot of places could have been filled with both humans and zombies which were left empty. There was alot more cutscenes which left me having no control of the situations and having to go with what the outcomes were.

    NOW..the story was the most disheartening. I HATED how Ellie treated Joel throughout. Then?
    After seeing Joels death? (which i believe felt extremely out of place and quickly done last minute with lack of understanding and dialogue) I was completely put off. I didn't want to play it anymore but i did with PURE vengeance. I had small hope to play as Ellie only to find Abby. Instead? I got to play less of Ellie and when the switch happened? I sold the game. I didnt bother with it. I later checked on youtube the ending and it was more insulting like Joel’s death wasnt enough of an insult. ELLIE LET GO OF ABBY? After Ellie kills everyone in her way RIGHTFULLY as they were part of Joels gang murder? ELLIE LETS GO OF ABBY?..Despite this, Ellie felt bad? What about all the scars Ellie killed? Or the WLF? Why did Ellie ONLY feel bad to kill the ones who deserved to be killed?? The character emotions confused me completely. I didn’t feel any emotions when I killed the dogs, killed Nora with a steel pipe and stabbed that pregnant woman. I believe the game tries to make u feel bad for killing the dogs when u play as Abby??? i don’t understand what Neil was thinking to even believe anyone would be happy to play as Abby and see shes some how not the bad person? Just because she saved a kid called Lev who happened to be a trans who kills his own mother for not accepting him???? This game tries making you turn against Ellie for killing these people Abby cares about. Well listen to this..NOBODY CARES ABOUT ABBY OR HER STORY TO JUSTIFY JOELS BRUTAL VILE GANG MURDER!!!! So why the hell did Neil put Abby’s story as part of the game? And 70% of it? We don't feel anything for her. WE CANT and neither did we want to. This was weak....In fact...Abby should have gotten over Joel killing her dad instead of expecting Ellie to let go of how Abby and her gang did after witnessing it? ABBY DIDNT WITNESS JOEL KILLING HER DAD THOUGH. She should have Forgiven Joel after hearing him out. He didnt even get a chance to explain or even apologise. The game asked him to sacrific a daughter like figure in part 1? After he lost his own daughter? Nobody would sacrific for humanity. Even if he did, Wars between humans would still happen, probably worse. Fights would still happen, probably worse and even worse Gangs would have formed. What difference would it have made if Joel gave Ellie in?????? None. Last thing he needed at his age was another loss and this big armed Abby didnt even hear him out.

    To me..the game was 3/10 because the storyline was awful. The emotions were not there..dialogue was $€#% and VERY annoying at times like when Dina constantly saying “shall i do it? Do u need help?” As if Ellie was incapable...ABBY DOESNT EVEN TELL ELLIE THAT JOEL KILLED HER DAD..WHO WOULDNT SAY THAT?? Instead she goes “u killed my friends” why couldnt she say “joel killed my dad..now u killed my friends..i should have killed u all when i had the chance..but i gave u the chance to live and u wasted it!!” That would have clarified ALOT. That scene itself would have been it. Also that guy who spits on Joel? He looks like Neil Druckman..why would u do that.

    Why couldnt a part 2 be an Ellie and Joel game as part 1 was a Joel and Ellie..THEN part 3 could have been this one..there would have been alot more sense and understanding..we could have been introduced to Abby properly where we could have said “ooo $€%#...shes after us now!” Then we would have been excited as hell to play part 3 and be chased by this angry big armed woman. That way we would have atleast in Part 2 enjoyed playing as Ellie with Joel being by our side as well as having a much better storyline.

    Also ONE MORE THING. Jess’s death was the worst. He was another great character wasted!! He needs a DLC to get to Ellie and Tommy. His friends problems were his problem and he went out of his way for them. He was shot and nobody mentions his name ever again. What the hell was that??

    And out of this ALL? WHERE THE HELL WAS RILEY?
    $€%# this game.Rant over..Thank you for your time :’( x

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:Great graphics, amazing world gen, and new sense of verticality. The flashbacks were exceptionally well wrote.
    Cons: i waited nearly a decade to watch my favourite character get clubbed to death, abby is an unwanted 10+ hour forced sidequest, the use of extremely shallow and conceited logic to invoke emotion is completely unnecessary. Etc

    Essentially if you cut abby out of the story and rewrote how Joel dies you could have an amazing game set up to explore the continued relationship made in the last game, and topped it off with the emotional death of a beloved character in a honourable and heroic fashion. Instead, you get a poorly written revenge story that berates the player for doing things that they dont have any choice in, finishing with the worst ending to any game ive ever played. But hey, blowing a fan favourite character's kneecap off with a shotgun and then clubbing him to death is totally the thing players waited for. And that 10+ hour forced sidequest with abby was definitely what fans wanted. Not to mention that sex scene that seemed to be wrote by a complete moron was definitely what we waited for. In conclusion Naughty Dog has broken a core tenant of every game: Games are meant to be FUN. This game is a perfect example of why some sequels are not meant to be made.

When I first completed the game I had mixed emotions there is no doubt that the visuals are stunning and just the feeling of playing as Ellie after waiting so long was great but upon reflection I realised The last of us 2 is an unorganised, nonsensical , bat **** crazy mess that forces its players into situations they don’t want to be in. The fact you have to play as the character who literally kills the guy you spent the entirety of the first game getting to know and love for 10+ hours is just horrific, I found myself asking aloud when I was going to be able to return to playing as Ellie not knowing that I would have to wait a painfully large amount of time. On top of this, things like when Ellie violently kills Nora who had very little involvement in the death of Joel yet chooses to spare Abby is just nonsense surely it would be the other way around. From the perspective of only a fan who’s favourite game of all time is the original last of us, the way naughty dog have spat in the face of their player base by certain members of their team choosing to accuse fans of being mysoginistic or homophobic etc . for simply not agreeing with the story is once again wrong. It may sound like I utterly hated this game which is not true there were definitely parts of the game which reminded me of why I loved the first one so much all be it they were the parts that didn't involve Abby but overall the game just disappointed me I felt like a kid at Christmas the night before release as I managed to carefully avoid any spoilers which we all know there were plenty of prior to release but when I awoke expecting an PS4 underneath the tree there was in fact a Soulja boy console sitting there Expand

This game is so heavily based around storytelling and, quite frankly, the story for this game is trash. I hated the ending and it makes no sense to me. I keep seeing garbage arguements about how "People only hate on this game because they're babies and they dont like that Ellie is into girls!" That's a load of crap man, nobody cares about that. People are angry because you took characters and a story that people loved and ran it straight into the ground. Naughty dog is a horrible company and this game isnt worth your time or your money. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Positives:
    - Improved though not wildly altered game mechanics. The fighting is more exciting and there's a few new things you can do, ie crawl, but it has the same basics.
    - Enemy NPCS move and converse realistically.
    - Great graphics.
    - Amazing voice acting.
    - Good soundtrack. Gustavo Santaolalla doesn't disappoint even if all else does.

    Negatives:
    - The game is contradictory, and it goes against everything that the first part established. Joel and Ellie have faced far worse than getting jumped by a group of no more than 6 strangers. Joel single-handedly took out a whole hospital-worth of armed soldiers before. You cannot convince me that this is what it'd take to kill him.
    - Ellie and Joel seem horribly out of character. Once again, after everything that they went through, it seems hard to believe that Joel would be so easily trusting of strangers and let himself get killed without a fight, and that Ellie would be impulsive enough to barge into a room and get immediately apprehended.
    - It's hard to feel sympathetic for Abby for 2 main reasons. For starters, her dad wasn't a good man. He wanted to kill a 14 year old girl - one of the protagonists, mind you, who the audience is supposed to care about and root for - in hopes of developing a vaccine without so much as consulting her first. Marlene points out the fact that he's selfish and wouldn't be so quick to agree to this if he had to kill Abby instead, and she's right. He also gets very little screen time and no development, and so the player doesn't care about him dying. If anything, we're glad that Joel killed him and saved Ellie.
    - Abby is completely unbearable at the beginning of the game. Perhaps she would be more understandable if she killed Joel in a less gruesome way, but she doesn't. Abby knows better than anybody else what it's like to lose your dad. And so for her to beat Joel to death right in front of his daughter and subject her to the same, if not worse because at least Abby didn't have to watch her dad die like Ellie did, trauma seems ridiculous and senseless to me. Playable characters aren't supposed to be perfect, but they are at the very least supposed to be likable in one way or another despite their flaws. We are supposed to feel for Abby and come to understand her, but this is difficult to do because she's so shallow.
    - Death is constantly used for shock value. In a poor attempt to subvert expectations and catch the player off guard, NaughtyDog horribly overuses this trope. The game is a lot more gruesome than the first one, which shouldn't necessarily be bad, but here it's just unnecessary. What made the first game successful is the even divide between heart-warming and heart-wrenching scenes. But with so much hurt and pain constantly taking place, it just gets boring and repetitive. The angst loses it's significance because the player gets so used to seeing it. We half expect something to go wrong every time there's an animated sequence because we've seen it countless times already. Personally, I felt nothing when Jesse and Yara died because I saw it coming from a mile away. I was honestly more surprised to see that Lev survived.
    - The representation for POC and LGBT people is very poor. NaughtyDog does not understand that implementing these characters only to villainise, torture, or kill them (sometimes all 3, and oftentimes purely for the sake of advancing another white character's story arc) does not make them "woke". Yes it's the apocalypse, yes people die - but why do literally none of the black characters survive? The first game is also guilty of this, but here it's especially bad. Why does only 1 out of the 3 Asian leads live? And to have Ellie and Isaac, a lesbian and a black man respectively, be so violent only plays into the stereotype that all lesbians and all black people are aggressive.
    - The trailers painted a completely different story for the game by purposely changing the character models and tinkering with the scenes. I know that trailers are supposed to avoid spoilers, but this was just straight up bait.
    - The ending was unfulfilling. Good stories often leave the audience with a big question in order to A) let them interpret what happens next themselves or B) leave room for the developers to make another game or a DLC in the future. The first game did this perfectly by having Joel lie to Ellie about what really happened with the Fireflies, but too many things are left unexplained here. Where did Dina and JJ go? What about Tommy? What did Ellie do next? Did Abby and Lev ever find the Fireflies? Who were the guys that kidnapped them? It's infuriating.

    I'd have more to say if it weren't for the word limit. I gave part 2 the benefit of the doubt because I loved the first game despite it's flaws. But after an exhausting 30+ hours, I can only say that I'm left disappointed. After 7 years, NaughtyDog's delivered us a game that is contradictory, repetitive, bland, and down-right insulting

Last of us part 2 totally forgets this... There is no Ellie without Joel and likewise there is no Joel without Ellie.... Instead we have to play as the character that brutally murders Joel. I understand the decisions they made but the execution was terrible. Joel is one of the best and most realised computer game characters ever... Getting us to feel sympathy toward the person who smashes his skull in is near impossibl. Abby and Lev are boring and unlikable, I can't believe they got rid of the Ellie/Joel relationship and replaced it with Abb/Lev... Truly heartbreaking. Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 was a huge disapointment. I give it 2 points, for the amazing graphics
    which some of the developers were forced crunch to hell and be hospitalised for this result to be achieved.
    Graphics means nothing to me but it does for a lot of people and it is clear TLOU2 is pushing
    the harware of the ps4 to its maximum. So I give 2 points for the graphics, the artistic direction though, is quasi non existent, and consist of ruins with overgrown vegetations, nothing special about it. Other games like Crysis 3 ,FF7 remake,Metro have the same type of post apocalyptic feels but with a real direction,unlike Naughty Dog games who are technical marvel but dont have a "soul".

    I give 1 point for the gameplay, it doesnt improve much compared to the previous one but it does a good job so here you go.

    Sadly TLOU2 is a story driven game, and if the story is uninteresting or just bad, it ruin the rest of the game. In this case, despite some ok moments like the flashback of Ellie's birthday, which almost re-create the magic of the first one for a brief moment, the rest is just uninteresting ,needlessly cruel and violent ,close to misery-porn sometimes, and even if some of the (really forced) things they tried to do might sounds as original to some people (why not ?) it seems the creator of the game even failed at that.
    The game was also falsy advertised with a certain emphasis on Joel, the favourite and beloved character of the fans, only to be modified in game (Im talking about two specific bits shown in the trailers).

    SPOILERS:
    The writers of the game decided to kill Joel and makes us play as his killer, Abby, whom we know nothing about.
    Later the devs try really hard to makes us have empathy for her and like her,but not only
    it is too late, but it's also very badly done and very on the nose, this trick reallly didnt work for a majority of people and Abby is now one of the most hated VG characters ever. I would say this is a failure.

    Another problem is the total lack of empathy Abby does have, her facial expressions, despite the mindblowing graphics of the game, are very bland and unexpressive, she is uncanny, and the things she says are neither smart, funny or interesting. She killed Joel in such a brutal way, not only did she kill him she also tortured him, and expressed zero remorse for the entirety of the rest of the game afte that, which is not the case of Ellie, who suffers from severe PTSD after all the things she does during the game, Abby is just a monster, a cold robot with no emotions and even the "good" things she tries to do during the game, are like a huge 10H side quest which brings absolutely nothing to the plot of the game,the only purpose being to include the story of a inlikeable"diverse" character we know nothing about.

    Sadly most of this fall flat, and the game switching point of views regularly gives it a completely bipolar and schizophrenic vibe. What are we supposed to do, us players, when we play as Ellie and try to kill Abby, and then later play as Abby trying to kill Ellie ,and when we fail, we die as Abby (which is what we want, we want Abby to die) but its a gameover and we have to continue and try to kill Ellie, which we don't kill and it goes on and on to the end where, when Ellie finally have the opportunity to kill Abby, she doesnt do it. It was all for nothing, but some people out there want us to think this is deep.

    No its not, its very clumsy, unnecessary edgy ,very cringe at time (some of the characters takes very stupid decisions and it sounds just forced. They really needed Joel to die so they lowered his I.Q for example) its impossible to relate to Ellie and her gf Dina who just stop in the middle of a patrol to smoke weed and have sex while Joel is being tortured and killed.

    A lots of the cast seems to only listen to their emotions,their feelings ,and decided to forget facts and logics and accessory a part of their brain.
    iit leads to a very long game that feels like a chore to finish.
    There is no silver lining for anyone, just death and misery, the way Joel and Ellie were treated in this episode ,which I consider non cannon, is not only very disrespectful, but also bad writing.
    Good graphics and ok gameplay can't save the bad writing, it is still possible to enjoy killing ennemies and taking screenshots, but so many other and better games do that too.

    At the end, this whole game feels like a 10 millions dollar experimental mess, a technical marvel with all the default and negative points of modern hollywood writing, even as a game it fails, since lots of "gameplay" sequences are just walking simulator, in wonderful looking environments we see for a minute and never see again.
    There is not a single new character in this game I find interesting, relatable, likeable orn intelligent, it"s crazy how they managed to do that.
    This game convinced me Death Stranding and Bioshock Infinite weren't actually that bad.

    Played all of Naughty Dog's games.
    Amazing graphics, music, above average gameplay. However, this is a story driven game.
    This game is like an average 4-5/10. If there was no prequel, I'd probably give it a 6 or even 7.
    But I honestly want to give it a 0 for the way ND has handled things. Their PR was ridiculous, their trailers misleading to the point is false advertisement, and they even tried to silence people with DMCAs. What an absolute disaster.

    Here is the list on the game and naughty dogs behaviours:

    1. Takes away everything that made the first game great, changes character's personalities to serve the plot;
    2. Makes a basic revenge plot sound like a pretentious masterpiece;
    3. New characters don't have depth, I don't care about anyone. When Jesse died, I felt nothing because I really didn't know the guy;
    4. Makes Ellie feel like the villain, you have to kill a dog and a pregnant lady;
    5. Tries to make you have compassion for Abby. While Ellie is killing everyone, Abby is playing with a dog. The game is trying to manipulate the player by making Abby more relatable and for that, has to make Ellie unlikable. Feels forced;
    6. The stupid pregnant woman just decided to risk her life for no damn reason, instead of being secured in the stadium, just so Ellie could kill her. Ellie bad. Horrible writing;
    7. You don't kill Abby;
    8. DMCA on everyone. ND and sony were really awful at handling this. Unacceptable;
    9. Awkward teenage drama between Ellie and Dina, seriously, that was really cringe;
    10. **** story trailer was misleading as hell. False advertisement;
    11. Dr. Uckmann and the "new dogs" feels like a showcase of the new team, and I hate it;
    12. You kill a person and later in the game you know about their history to make you feel guilty. Every single time. So cheap...
    13. Bigot Sandwich;
    14. Horrible pacing, changing characters all the time, lots of flashbacks;
    15. Flashbacks inside of flashbacks;
    16. Also, did you know revenge is bad? You didn't, did you? Yap, revenge and violence are bad. Now be astonished by my clearly superior intellect, you peasants. You pedestrian creatures;
    17. Joel doesn't tell Ellie the whole story in order to serve the plot, once again;
    18. Story doesn't justify game's length, it has 2 times the longevity of the first, but half the story content, just seems to drag on;
    19. Abby and her father moments are supposed to feel the same as Ellie and Joel connection, couldn't care less;
    20. The **** zebra is supposed to replace the **** giraffe moment, and give some humanity to Abby's father, then in the next scene he wants to kill a 14 year old girl;
    21. For me, they created the stadium section of the game, with all of its complexity, just to justify Abby's gains. First create the character, then get out of their way to create a possible environment for it;
    22. So much repetition, Abby lets Ellie go several times, Ellie searches for Abby several times. This is the game;
    24. Hypocrisy of sexual content in games by Sony;
    23. *Guess*

    Plot holes for me:
    1. Group travels 1k miles for revenge. Also they have second thoughts when they arrive. Only Abby continues;
    2. Ridiculously coincidental Joel-Abby encounter at the begining of the game. This is luck on a complete new level;
    3. Change Joel character into a naive person in order to set Abby's revenge;
    4. Abby let's Ellie and Tommy live, Ellie is on the ground screaming she will revenge Joel;
    5. Ellie travels to Seattle(1k miles!) to fight an entire group of people, practically alone;
    6. Abby lets Ellie leave again in the theater;
    7. **** Jesse dies. He was just a sperm donor anyways;
    8. Dina gets a pregnancy belly so fast? Or did I miss a time skip?;
    9. Kills hundreds of people in order to kill Abby. Doesn't do it because revenge bad;
    10. Flashbacks are mostly pointless;
    11. Joel doesn't tell Ellie the whole story in the firefly basement in order to serve the plot, once again;
    12. Pregnant lady goes to combat and the dialog to to justify this is just ridiculous. There is just one reason for her to be there and we all know it, for Ellie to kill her;

    After all this list I lower my review to a 3. Character progress right here.
    Sorry if my list is not ordered, I was writing as I was remembering all of the issues I have with it. I also didn't have 7 years to make this, so... Yep(Joel's last word)

There's a lot of the development team who deserve a 10/10 for the work they put in on the world, the art, the sound. Rainy Seattle is an amazing environment that I could spend hours in. But it all gets dragged down by the story, it drags any score right down. Naughty Dog really do deserve a slap on the wrist for the way they handled the story, the failed attempts at subversion and the just constant bad decisions they wrote the characters to make. The order in which the story is told is a particularly prominent misstep, as is the presumption that players would warm to some of the new characters even with the way they try to manipulate this. I felt substantial lack of respect for the first game and what it made you feel for Joel and Ellie. If they're going to go another round with Last of Us 3, they need to shuffle around who is leading of the story to try to redeem the series. Expand

Tengo un profundo amor por Last of Us 1. Es por eso que no le doy al juego un cero plano.

    Pero este juego realmente me rompió el corazón.

    La historia fue terrible. Horrenda, horrible escritura. Poco desarrollo de los personajes, estaban tomando decisiones completamente fuera del personaje desde el principio. Lo que los definió antes, se ha ido, estas son diferentes personas con sus caras. Hicieron cosas solo para impulsar la historia y crear situaciones. Las personas cambian, pero destrozaron el núcleo de quiénes eran y todo lo que hizo que el juego fuera memorable.

    La historia en general fue una escritura perezosa. Tenían una lista de lecciones de la sociedad para golpear, y luego crearon una historia para mostrar esos puntos. El juego siguió dando conferencias con discursos, escenas y situaciones descaradamente obvias. Una y otra vez, debes aprender esta idea, como un vecino fastidioso que nunca pediste. El juego te obligaba a tragar las creencias y las posiciones del desarrollador del juego. Arruinó el juego.

    Por último, NINGÚN juego debería tratar activamente de hacerte sentir mal contigo mismo y con todo. Se sintió como un trabajo pesado en la miseria. Terminas odiando a todos en el juego.

    No lo recomiendo. Y odio a Neil D por arruinar un juego legendario y que amé con esta basura de secuela.

    if u want to make a history focussed game, u should foccus on the story and on the characters, like detroit become human;
    if u want to foccus on gameplay, u should have an interesting loot, worth exploration and of course A COOL COMBAT on the most of the titles, like dark souls;
    In raw history and technical part this game is ALMOST PERFECT, but is incredible how it fail on show the story

    I played this game every morning before work, and every night after work, for 4 days. As soon as i finished it, I walked out of my room, looked my roommate in the eye and said “I waited years for that, and it was terrible. It wasn’t worth the time, or the money.” So I’ll say the same here. The story is terrible, if you loved the original Last Of Us, don’t play this. Years wainting for this game, in part for the promising huge game that developers told about...

    Well this game deserve a bad score, not just because of it's lame history, but it isn't nothing more than the same game with a little grafics improvement...

    This is an insult to fans of the original. Not only did Naughty Dog used false advertising to make Joel seem as the main protagonist(or at least have a QUARTER of the total screen time), they manipulated the trailer footage to make Joel look younger. They basically fooled all of us, Joel was the selling point, and they KNEW IT.
    Also, take political stuff OFF video games. Push an agenda elsewhere.

    Я понял, что самый лучший день наступил, когда заполучил эту игру в свои дрожащие руки от потного консультанта в DNS. Резко выбежав из магазина, я прыгнул на прокатный самокат и помчался домой на максимальной скорости. I wasn't a huge fan of the first one but I'll agree that it was a good game overall. I can't say the same for this sequel though. Aside from graphics everything else takes a turn for the worst, especially the story and characters. I would not recommend playing unless you like trophies and buy it second hand or something.

    Alright. Where do we start?

The difficulty is non-existent, the gameplay is no different from the first game and in fact, holds your hand much more than the first game ever did. In addition, it has unlikeable and horribly written characters that are annoying to play as, a story that is nonsensical and quite obviously designed to not appeal to the average gamer whatsoever. There is no sense of agency at all, and the players are provided with no say in how the story turns out (while the advertisements promoted this as a game where choice mattered).

    Overall, this is a clumsy, awkwardly-written, disjointed mess that spits on the legacy of the original game. It pains me to write that, but I have to be honest.

    There are better games that give characters justice. There are far better stories that give the players enjoyment. The game relies far too much on graphics and somewhat-decent gameplay.

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

    If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
