The game is not a masterpiece but a very good game. Gameplay mechanics in comparison with the first part seems more "alive". Well-written characters, interesting fights, large locations, as well as wonderful graphics give a storm of emotions. I recommend everyone to get acquainted with this game (of course, after passing the first part).

For me this game is an absolute masterpiece, regardless what others say about it (cuz the most of them didn‘t even finished the game), after RDR2 i thought no game can ever could break me like this again but naughty dog did it. No game got me this emotional like TLOU2! Also everyone which say the story is bad, didn‘t even understood the whole point about the story.

I can't believe they treated Joel like that just for the shock value... another case of a franchise dying just because it has to be ruined by bad storytelling.

Jomoll Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
Sin embargo, en the last of us parte 2 no es el caso.

    "Revenge is a fools game"
TLOU 2 is one of the most interesting games I have played. Graphics are obviously awesome. Gameplay is alright (it could be a bit more intuitive like uncharted but its not a big deal).
The reason for the high ranking is the story. I like it. Its about the relativity of revenge. Everything someone does out of hate backfires -> thats the morale of the **** story.

I catch myself thinking about it a lot. But the most astonishing thing about this game is: It teaches you about human behaviour. The game achieves this effect not only through its story but also through the impact it had on gamers. Never was a well-made game praised by the critics and doomed by the the users at the same time. Surprisingly the most reviews were given 48 hours after release, which is funny because the game is 25 - 30 hours long.

However, The Last Of Us II was an experience I surely wont forget.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I pretty much knew the game wouldnt be as good as the first one. But I still brought it just to see what the story is about. The first 2 hrs you get no play time as Joel and instead we get a brutal death. Afterwards it makes you wonder why Joel and Tommy were so easy going on telling them there names and where they live. And what's more is that Joel didnt do anything when Abby had the shotgun. The two are suppose to have 20 years of apocalyptic experience but get destroyed by a bunch of rookies that didnt even think bout killing tommy and Ellie afterwards, makes you wonder if they just did it on purpose just because. Another issue in the game is that you are forced to play as Abby for 10 hrs and they try to force you to feel sorry for her. Realistically you cant because her dad was a dochebag and didnt even ask what Ellie wanted and wasnt even planning on telling Joel in the first place. There was forced romance which was not needed because it seemed so outta of place and they give the women in the game to much power which made it seem that they were being sexist such as killing Jesse, Joel and handicapping Tommy. And finally you didnt even get your revenge instead Ellie wimps out and let's Abby, go leaving you with nothing. Some people might say Joel had it coming and that he was meant to die but honestly his actions are justified. He did it because he didnt want to lose another daughter he had no one else to care for after Tess was gone. And like I said before they weren't going to give Ellie a choice to give up on her life. I regret my buy has to be one of the worst games of 2020 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to vent and express my frustration with disappointment, the story line is weak and is clearly pushing a narrative down your throat, the story does not flow well at all throughout the whole experience. We are forced to play a character during the last half of the game that I really didnt care about playing. And then I was left empty and unsatisfied at the end of the game, my whole journey was basically pointless and a waste of time. This is a problem and pattern with game developers, you start a great game and turn into crap and ruin it with sequels they think we want instead of making game sequels we want. Sorry Naughty Dog I dont think the TLOU franchise is salvageable anymore and you deserve a boycott. These game reviewer critics that are giving this game perfect scores are lying and they dont want to be blacklisted. I think the story shouldve ended back when Abby let Dina and Ellie go, after that it feels so dragged on and literally nothing changes beside Ellie losing 2 fingers.
Don't mind the bad reviews, the story is not an oscar winning story but its pretty good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I guess I share my back story with this franchise with the vast majority of people here. I absolutely love the first game and have anticipated the sequel impatiently. However, from my very first encounter with The Last of Us years ago I've felt more attached to Ellie than Joel so for me making her the main focus of the story in the continuation was really a dream coming true. That's probably why I find Joel's death (even despite the overwhelming sadness of the moment) a good starting point of the whole narrative and something that gives Ellie very strong motivation for the revenge.
The first half of the game (everything up until the initial confrontation of Ellie and Abby in the theater) truly left me invested in the story and eager for more. I very much liked watching the relationship between Ellie and Dina evolving and the comfort it gave the main character as well as the player. For me, the camera shots of Ellie's back and the shift in her emotional state, were (and stil are) enough of an anti-violence message that Naughty Dog was surely aiming to deliver.
And here unfortunately comes the second half of the story... At the beginning of the Abby-oriented storytelling I was convinced it was only for a little while (to add some valuable insights into the character's past etc.). I'm totally okay with temporary changes of the player's perspective (after all it worked in the first game), but why anyone though that it was a good idea to throw everything straight into the trash bin and to force us to solve the problems of the person we wholeheartedly hate for the next ten hours? And don't even get me started on making the player fight Ellie...
I'm happy that they at least allowed me see the ending of the story through Ellie's eyes and it was very emotionally-charged and thought-provoking, but honestly I was so tired after this whole "Abby twist" that it wasn't as touching kind of closure as I'd been hoping for before all of that happened.
To nicely sum the thing up, The Last of Us Part II isn't a failure at its core - it's still top notch from the strictly technical point of view, but it was unpleasant for me to see some strange storytelling experiments in my beloved game - there are DLCs for example to implement such ideas. In addition, what's made the disappointment even worse was the advertising - not a word has been said that something like that is coming story-wise and if something takes up about a half of your product, you should mention it. All in all, let me just quote Dina - "I'd give it a six".

This game is not telling a story it's trying to push a message. A poor one at that and it disregards all of feelings we had towards the existing characters.

Remember if someone kills your dad you'd best just get over it.

The reason players don't care for abby
is not because they're bad and they don't see her pain, it's because Abby isn't a part of our tribe, i.e. Joel and Ellie. Players want her dead and she rightfully should be. This game is so unfulfilling it's like having to sneeze but you can't.

This story should have ended with the first game.

Oh and all those disingenuous 10 out of 10 scores, that's disgusting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Lat Of Us Part 2 is easily the most controversial game of the entire year, and has divided gamers, some people hate it, others love it for what it is. The Last Of Us 2 is not a terrible game or the worst game ever made like most people have been saying. It is definitely disappointing in some areas but it is not the worst game ever made. The rest of this review contains spoilers.

Con one: Joel's death. I think we can all agree that since the game was announced that we were excited to get see our iconic duo once again and see how their relationship has developed since the first game. And I think I speak for every fan of this series, that we were upset when Joel was killed at the two hour mark in one of the worst ways, getting his skull bashed in by a golf club. I think we wouldn't have minded if Joel died in this game if it were towards the end of the game and it was because he was protecting Ellie. His death felt cheap and had no impact, unlike Sarah's death from the first game.

Con Two: Playing as Abby. I don't know why Naughty dog thought it was a good idea to put in a section where you have to play as Abby, the woman who killed Joel, who in my opinion is one of the best written video game characters of all time. I didn't like her story line at all and playing as her just rubbed me the wrong way and it felt like her story line was just filler to make the game longer then it needed to be. I wanted to play the entire game through Ellie's eyes. Yes it explains why Abby went to kill Joel but I think we would've been fine if we saw her only three times. First at the beginning where we see her kill Joel, second time at the movie theater, and the final time for the final fight at the beach. It puts Ellie's revenge plot on hold and takes away from the overall plot.

Con three: The fireflies. Before Abby gets captured towards the end of the game, she ends up coming into contact with people who are rebuilding the fireflies. I don't like this because it takes away the emotional weight from the ending of the first game, Where Joel literally kills the remaining fireflies and their leader to save Ellie. Now they make that ending not matter now that the fireflies are back. so it makes the ending of the game feel pointless.

Con four: Ellie And Joel. This is the biggest problem I have with this game, Ellie is angry with Joel the entire game. Yes they later explain why but that doesn't excuse the fact the entire first game is now pointless. The whole first game was about the bond between them and how they basically become father and daughter. Now that doesn't matter now that Ellie hates Joel for the whole game.

A lot of cons right, makes the game sound terrible and the fans shouldn't play it. But that's not the cause. Lets talk pro's.

Pro One: Ellie's Motivation. Like i said earlier even though Joel's death was a weak, it makes sense story wise because it gives Ellie motivation to get revenge on the people who killed basically her father figure. And you believe that motivation since we all know how much Joel meant to Ellie.

Pro Two: The Characters. Even if you hate the story like most people do, the characters hold the game together. Everyone has their own character arcs including Ellie. Ellie goes on a quest for revenge and will do anything she has to find and kill Abby and kill anyone she has to get to her. She uses her anger as her main weapon. However when we reach the end of the game and Ellie is drowning Abby in the water, she realizes even if she kills Abby it won't bring Joel back. So even though some people hate that you don't kill Abby in the end, it makes sense for Ellie's arc and to show that the violence we use on others to make ourselves feel better, won't solve the pain and loss we witnessed or went through.

Pro Three: Graphics And Gameplay. The graphics in this game is beautiful and is one of the best looking PS4 game of all time in my opinion. Everything looks great from the foliage growing around us, to the amazing detail on the characters. The gameplay is smooth, every violent action you do as either Ellie or Abby was fun to do and amazing to watch. Small details from the blood from Ellie's victims squirting out onto her face whenever she would do major damage to their body, to hiding under cars and waiting for the right moment to strike at your enemies.

In conclusion this is not a terrible game, this is not the worst game ever made. It is definitely disappointing in some areas, but not enough to take away from your enjoyment of the game. This is a great game that I would not only recommend to the fans but to newcomers who just want to hop in and see what this game is all about. I suggest to play the game for yourself and develop your own opinion on it and not just go off what you've heard or read on the internet.

Joel was treated like a random NPC the way he got killed and then spat on, was very disrespectful after all that had happened in the first game. Felt like the manner in which he got killed and spat on was purposely a slap in the face for us, as if to say "forget this garbage and let's focus on a political agenda now". Especially because it was done so early in the game too. Worst part is, it was advertised in trailers as if joel would have some good focus in this sequal, and it's obvious they did that incase people found out joel gets treated like **** and then not buy the game. Not against main characters dying either but it's the way in which they die that needs to be carefully crafted. Red dead series is a very good example. Joel's death was lazy writing to focus on an agenda. Don't think I need to say anymore. Not against any form of group or community but these days it feels like developers of games and movies alike are forcefully making these decisions when it simply doesn't fit into the narrative it just feels out of place. They're are so many ways to make everyone feel involved without sacrificing the story. Mass effect series, dragon age and even assassins creed odyssey are all prime examples. The options are there for the player to choose but it does not sacrifice story or feel forced. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before the haters hate, yes I have played through this game to completion and no, I am in no way against the LGBTQ+ community. Now that is out of the way, let's begin and spoiler alert by the way.

Well, actually... where do I start with this mess. Look, I am a massive fan of the first game - so much so this was my most anticipated game of the past 4 years since its announcement. Firstly, lets start with the story/plot, and where it goes wrong in so many ways but also what it does right.

Okay so, this "sequel" follows Joel and Ellie again right? ... Right? Well... No. Joel, my personal and I know a lot of other fans too, favourite protagonist in a video game EVER is killed off within the first 2 HOURS of this 25 hour game. Now this COULD have worked, however the way they executed (no pun intended) this was HORRIFIC. For starters, it just straight up makes no sense as to why Joel and Tommy would wonder in to a room full of strangers after 25 years of building a natural survivors instinct. Furthermore, the way Joel inevitably is killed is so inhumane and spiteful to a character we've grown to adore of the past 7 years, a character we were told we would be following in a new adventure but were unfortunately lied to by an incompetent marketing strategy.

The game then follows Ellie, our new protagonist and god damn she is great and we can't wait to get sweet revenge on Joel's murderer, Abby... Right? RIGHT!? Well... No. Half way through the game, the developers decided it be a good idea for us to play as Joel's murderer, for her to not be an antagonist, but a second protagonist. This is where the game falls flat in many ways, I can't count the amount of times I intentionally had Abby's throat ripped apart by a clicker, or fall from a great height to her demise, finding satisfaction in seeing this character die in the meanest fate, something I as a player genuinely believed she deserved. Any attempt at making us sympathise with Abby is in vain as we unfortunately already know what she has done and myself as a player only wanted one thing and that was for Ellie to avenge Joel's death.

Anyway, in short, we go back to playing as Ellie and find Abby after a short time has passed. And we're about to get our sweet, sweet revenge... Right? RIGHT!? Oh for fuc...

A game like this is all about the story, and this story is incredibly disjointed and droll. There's a twist very early in the game that had no business existing, and by the time I finally turned it off at about 10 hours into the game, it felt like I had just paid 60 dollars to listen to be preached at by a George Floyd rioter. It feels like this story was written by somebody from an AI on another planet that had aggregated all the movies of the last 25 years and then attempted to write a script based off of it without ever actually experiencing life. I don't know, I can't quite put my finger on it, but between the plotline that seems designed to try and make you feel like a bad person, the identity politics that serves to remind you you can't even escape them in entertainment in 2020, and the poor mechanical aspects, and the absolutely crazy story line, all I felt was bad about myself for wasting 60 dollars. All the twitter/reddit degenerates who hate just to hate and watched several minutes of the game(most frequently it's first 20 and last 15 minutes of the game) Go and stay in the **** you are . Basically you defame the userscores as a thing, potentially forcing the metacritic and the publishers to shut it down forever, as long as they pretty much have no choice at the current state.

So the game, to tell the long story short. It’s a masterpiece and almost perfect by all means including story.
    1. The Story
Although the story is not like any other, structure is far from standard tropes, it takes your feelings, your love to the characters and the first game and just smash you with all emotions that possible, you feel scary, pity, thrill, tension, nostalgic, happy, good sadness about the old times and awful sadness about how the life are going now and what the circumstances can do with your beloved people. All of this mixed through the game in the most unexpected way you can think of, and in many ways you even can’t thing of. I’m not spoiling anything so I will not tell you about what will happen, experience it yourself.
Just to tease: it’s about the different truths, being blind when being led by strong emotion, meaninglessness of violence and how it’s never late to break the circle, even when you have lost yourself. This story can make you depress at some part, be ready for that, but this is done with the reason in mind. One of the best stories in years.
    2. The graphics
Here I shall put it as simple as it is. The most technologically advanced game of this gen, just check the DF video (but please for the God, don’t read the comments)
    3. The Gameplay
Take all you love in the first game gameplay, enhance it in every single aspect and you will get the TLOU 2 game formula. It’s THIS good. Action is faster, impact from weapons and the enemy reactions are best in the whole industry ever. You actually can choose playstyle, in case you don’t like stealth – than don’t go for it, the ND have given you the advanced settings, so you can tune it as it fits your mind, want the most adrenaline tps game ever? Fine, make the enemies aggressive and let the resources be many all around. Like to survive and hide? Not a problem too, there is amazing survival mode for you. In the gameplay aspect there is no other game on the market right now in June 24, 2020.
    Verdict
One of the best game in this generation, it’s swan song, just like the fist one was in it’s time.
TLOU 2 can and will make you complete crazy, in every way.
    Totally, full-fledged 100 of 100

The plot of this game is cruel, and many people did not like it, but I appreciate that the developers did not try to please the players, but acted in such a way as to leave the gamers with more emotions.

P.S. A lot of people who rated TLoU 2 less than 5 consider the pros of the game as cons. Joel’s death was so harsh on purpose, and not to “merge the character,” the game for Abby was not to “lengthen the game,” but to show that she also has many reasons to act like she enters etc.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II was truly a journey from start to finish. The game was extremely well written having players go on a journey as both Ellie and Abby. Ellie's story truly pulls on your heart. Players will find themselves lost in a world of horror and anger. I truly hated Abby when I started playing as her since she killed Joel, one of my favorite characters. By the end of playing as her, you come to love her and want her to succeed. The ending teaches players that revenge is not always the correct answer. Revenge cost Ellie everything she ever loved, almost getting her killed.
The game mechanics truly are amazing. Fighting is incredibly smooth and gives players a ton of options on how to play. You can run and gun or you can be stealthy in your encounters with enemies. There are intense and graphic death scenes that help players get immersed in life during the zombie apocalypse. All enemies have names so killing them will cause their friends to cry about the deaths of their friends. The game is also extremely scary filled with more then just typical jump scares. This game is a must-play for all players.

I loved the story. There are some parts where I did question the decision of the writers, but I pushed through those moments, and it was worth it. Mind you this is not a 'fun' game, its a story about the destructive nature of the cycle of violence and vengeance.

One must also mention the visuals and audio of this game which are phenomenal. Truly a testament of what the PS4 can do when given to a studio that believes in the smaller details.

I must say that I do not feel its a 9 or a 10 for a couple of reasons:
    - Some of the characters needed to be more fleshed out in my opinion
    - At times I was almost going to stop playing because of specific paths the story and gameplay took, but my resilience did pay off, and the message at the end did get through, and I am grateful for it.

First, no one gives a crap about the new playable character, okay?? We waited years to play as Joel & Ellie, not some unlikable new character we don't even care about. The fact that we are forced to play as this character for the majority of this game is unacceptable! I'm pretty sure the chapters you play as the new protagonist are way longer than Ellie's. What's the point of printing Ellie's face on the game cover, or make a 12 inch Ellie statue for the collector's edition if she has less screen time than this new crappy protagonist? (Yes, sadly I bought the collector's edition because I thought this would be as good as the previous game) Secondly, what's the point of introducing a bunch of new side characters when you're just going to kill them off in cutscenes before any actual character development? I'm going give this a score of 4 because the voice acting, soundtrack, combat system, art design/graphics are as good as the previous game. The story however ruined it for me. I probably won't be pre-ordering part 3 if there's ever going to be a sequel. I might reconsider if they actually hire competent writer who can actually write a decent story. I'm not even asking for a good story, that's how disgusted I am with part 2's story. Well done part 2 writer(s). You just ruined one of the greatest video games I've ever played. This game is just like it's ending: completely pointless/waste of time.

It's a great game, don't listen to all the review bombing from people who are upset because of what happens 2 hours in. The story is told very well.

This is still the gold standard of triple A games in terms of gameplay. It took the simple game mechanics of the first and improved on them immeasurably, utilising them in an infinitely more dynamic world with satisfying and gorgeous level/encounter design.

[MINOR SPOILERS FROM HERE] However, since The Last of Us, there have been a lot of releases that have been superlative storytellers. From Red Dead Redemption 2 to Outer wilds to even something as expansive as The Witcher 3 to gorge yourself on. Part 2 never reaches the heights of the first game and is subordinate to even more comparable releases in this regard. The "if you're out for revenge, prepare two coffins: one for your quarry, and the other for yourself" storyline is done to death in infinitely better westerns than TLOU2 and it mostly feels like Naughty Dog has a load of emotional check boxes it wants to fill, giving the story a less organic feel.

I don't understand this recent, I think, desire that writers often have to show the humanity in all of the monsters that they create. The sequences with Abby are arduous for this reason. I simply don't care about the connection that her and her group had with the dog that I killed earlier on in the game, which they realistically brought out with them to either a) die b) maul Ellie's face off. It's so lazy. Yes, Abby’s a person trying to survive in a world only slightly more hostile than our own, but anybody can appear sympathetic, you don't need to debase and derail the momentum of a narrative and take me on a massive gameplay diversion (10+ hours easily) just to tell me that.

[MAJOR SPOILERS FROM HERE] The final act synthesises one of the worst and most egregious ludo-narrative dissonances between authorial intent, what the game is actually asking you to do at any given moment and how it’ll make you feel that I've ever seen in a video game. For e.g. a fail-state existing in the final desperate confrontation between Abby and Ellie, so that if you mess up in dodging a strike or two, you die and have to beat Abby over and over again until you get it right, is just torture porn. Nothing more. Particularly after it’s actually Ellie that forces the fight from Abby, who is to too weak and tired to care anymore, no doubt written this way in acknowledgement that there were still going to be some players who wanted their shot at harming Abby for what she did to Joel. Developers/coders probably missed birthdays and stuff under crunch for this kind of **** and that’s embarrassing. It tries so forcefully to emphasise a liberal idea of shared humanity during some of the most monstrous moments that it actually comes across as not caring about the fate, wellbeing or audience goodwill for *any* of the characters (aside from Joel but he has long-since passed). They’re simply empty vessels for a consistently manipulative game, to the point where it relies heavily on flashbacks to hold any true emotional weight, reminiscing on a time when Naughty Dog had loftier goals than this tripe.

Having said all of that, the very, very final few tender moments–the game drags and has about 10 presumed endings like Return of the King– I could see working and hitting the right note if the 20 hours (of a 30 hour game) that preceded it was better-written. Also, Ellie and Dina are mostly great and the banter that they share together outside of the cutscenes is sweet. That's it. Those are the only redeeming qualities for the majority of Part 2.

I basically never agree with review-bombs like this in user scores. They're almost always infantile and reactionary. However, in this instance, I'm inclined to agree. Though there certainly is a lot of "this is SJW fanfare", I think they're incoherently touching on the sense that TLOU2 is awfully ham-fisted and moralising in a tacky way. And they're right. Every games journalist who has touted this as a masterpiece for the pleasure of £60 a pop is a bare-faced liar because make no mistake, if you cared about Ellie and her essential goodness: Naughty Dog is taking you for a fool. If you like dogs: they are laughing at you as they p*ss in your eyes. If you wanted a sequel that was greater than the sum of its parts and had something actually meaningful to say: Naughty Dog wants you dead.

Great game. Not many games have such a strong emotional gameplay. Every character seems like unique person, not just a nameless thug. And the visuals are absolutely stunning, from character models to cloth and rope physics to lights. Simply put, it is a masterpiece.

I was so excited for this game. Waited 7 years for this game and was just utterly disappointed with how bad the game was. Don't even get the main characters anymore. Instead, we get forced to play as a character we have never heard of with no character development that makes sense.

Name another game that doesn't want to leave you with the ending you wanted/predicted but an ending that shows the emotional growth of its characters summed up in one final fight. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its a movie rather than a game. The quest are rather shallow. Deceiving fans with deceptive marketing practices ( lying about joel), forced into a narrative that is pretty cringe. Blackmailing peoples lives to the point of it risking their jobs is unacceptable practice. Saying anime games are bad anf should be censored.

Saying anime games are bad and should be censored but having a sex scene is pure hypocrisy. And the list goes on and on and on of things they did. To be fair the game has not gotten better or innovative with it being a 7 year projrct.

After the hype, they gave us a poorly made game, awful history with a lax gameplay, don't know why they decided to ruin such a great saga.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
