Naughty Dog ruined a Masterpiece. The game is more disappointing and bad than i was expecting. I didn't want to play anymore but I forced myself to end this game. In the end, it wasn't worth it for me to buy this game because i'm more disappointed than satisfied. The end of part 2 is horrible and a huge flop for me. There are more negative than positive things i could say about Part 2. This definitely ruined my day and life. Expand

    Story, The ugly: 0
I see what they were going with it but they flopped terribly in the execution it's infuriating...I mean who tf wrote this? A teenage intern? I really have nothing more to say without spoiling...there is a ton of other games with silly stories and who reads this must have seen a movie or played a game with bad writing that goes nowhere but this time the story was perfect and the sequel ruins everything (take Game of Thrones season 8 as an example)...
To put it in one sentence: compared to the first one it gets a zero from me nothing more sadly.

    Gameplay, The bad: 6
The gameplay is the same with some refinements...it still is clunky and last-gen just looks cooler so a 6 I guess...

    Graphics, The good: n/a
The graphics are very good...I really don't care though..oh character design is somehow worse than the first one...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished the game yesterday and had been waiting in anticipation for this game for months. The hype was real. Naughty Dog has the reputation of making magic with video games and I'd hoped that TLOU2 would be a masterpiece too. The game starts off slow with rustic guitar piece all familiarising you with the setting that this is based in. Humanity has survived and they have build settlements with electricity and other niceties, life seems to go on within such settlements oblivious to the ongoings of the outer world. Jackson is one such community. Joel and Ellie live her with other support cast (Tommy, Dina and Jesse). They are estranged owing to what happened in the first part. Yet they have some fondness for each other. Joel is killed off almost immediately by Abby in spite of the fact that he just saved her (Motive : Abby's father was killed by Joel while trying to rescue Ellie from the hospital). Yet I'd have preferred some empathy for a man that just saved her life. Also it was anti climactic to see Joel being so naive and walk into a trap. This sets Ellie on crazy revenge path. They (Ellie, her girlfriend Nina, Tommy and Jesse) go to Seattle separately and start knocking WLF numbers down. WLF is the group that Abby is part of. They kill of Abby's friends and this ticks Abby off and she kills few of Ellie's and just about the time she is to kill Ellie (15 hours into the game), we are set onto Abby's flash back (Frustrating). The game now forces us to relive what Abby was doing for three days when Ellie was killing her friends. This is a solid ten hour nightmare with a person that you have been bought to hate. Extremely inconsequential stuff with random NPC's added (Lev and Yara), you do fetch quests for them, forge relationship with Owen (Teenage sweetheart who is married) and manage to survive while being an outcast from WLF. Also by the end of ten hours you don't start empathizing with Abby but are rather focused on getting over the tedium and completing the game. The gameplay mechanics while upgraded (jump, prone, rope usage etc.) are nothing to write home about and the shooting is exactly the way it was - clunky. The animations are fabulous and so is the art direction, the game looks like every last ounce of PS4 Pro's graphical prowess has been extracted There are wide open spaces which are awe inspiring and beautiful. You'd be able to visualise the nature in all its glory. However every destination needs you to enter a dingy dark building filled with infected, use the environment in some twisted way or fight random group of enemies. I used to dread when the game required me to go somewhere which was more than two blocks away. The stealth works just till it doesn't and the enemy AI is laughable. Now since you have put 20 odd hours (10 of them as Abby), you really need a fantastic climax to make it worth it. But to our dismay once we are bought back to present in the theater, nothing of that sort happens and an ancillary character Lev belonging to SCARS (WLF's nemesis) clan (had saved Abby's life) requests Abby to not kill Dina & Ellie and Abby agrees. Next off we are shown that Ellie and Dina are living the perfect farm life with Dina's son keeping them company (The game doesn't end here too).Tommy who miraculously survived getting shot, stirs the hornets nest by stating that he knows where Abby is. This sets off Ellie on one another mission (Noooooo). The game by this point feels drab and dragged by 10 hours. Ellie rescues Abby only to state that she can't let her go and they fight and finally when Ellie has the upper hand she decides to forgive Abby and move on. Now if this is what she had to do why did she make us go through the pain of playing for twenty five hours while convincing us that she'd kill every one of them. Where this morality came from at the most inopportune moment. The game has no real story arc and you'll not connect with any of the characters including Ellie. The game tries too hard to please everyone and also be a maverick/trend setter but forgets the core which got us to love part 1 ; that is story telling and relatable characters, everything else is just a fancy garnish. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved TLOU and went in this game blind and didn’t look at any leaks. I also didn’t believe how bad the Story was based on the leaks and fan reactions. That is how much I loved TLOU. I gave every benefit of doubt to them believing that the master piece they made will continue I mean uncharted never disappointed me.

But. First a little rant before the review.

Joel dies in the first hour of the game. The man I waited to play as for this long was denied to me. The man we all fell in love with in TLOU. But His death serves nothing but a shallow plot line of revenge which could have been anyone else but Joel and it would still have worked. I mean just kill Dina she served no real story reason in the game. The story.

The story was very shallow and full of plot holes. It’s about Ellie looking for revenge for Joel’s death. That’s it. And guess what, she does not take revenge for Joel’s death at the end by letting go of the person who killed Joel for no reason. Yes half way through the game you will change too play as the killer Abby for around 10 hours trying to show the bond with the group that “really hated” Joel which you won’t see in this story. You then go as Abby to do a side quest saving some children which again serves no actual meaning for the overall story as they become irrelevant the moment they were introduced. But when it changes back to Ellie, only the player experienced the 10hours of game and story with Abby, there should not have been a change of heart for Ellie to suddenly not take her revenge! She has nothing on Abby, she literally met her for 10 minutes and then decided killing her was not right. I would also like to point out that Joel’s death was very out of his character trusting some random stranger out in the woods which he made very clear he never did in the first game. I really hated the story, abhorred it. Two female leads with one that was forcibly shoved to our face even though we never asked for it. I could go on how bad the story is but there are reviews that go much more in-depth than me so I’ll leave it there.

    Gameplay.

The gameplay feels exactly the same as the first game. Yes some upgrades are done to the gameplay. But, the overall experience is exactly the same. It is still very hard to aim properly with your gun, the hand to hand combat is still as shallow button mashing with occasional QTE prompt to dodge. They added a jump button which also serves no purpose as all the actual part that need navigating is still very automatic. You can’t grab higher ledges cos of you jump, you can’t jump over stuff because you can jump . I pretty much forgot about the jump button Zero minutes into the game and was surprised half way through the game when I accidentally pressed the wrong button and jumped whiling fighting a horde clickers. Oh yes. The enemies do not change much. I can’t remember exactly what 1 had but this game still has the same trope with some dogs and new silent enemies introduced. Doesn't change the 25 hour experience in much anyway.

There is jarringly a lack of environmental puzzles also. So the game revolves around getting from A to B with not much in the middle. Some small areas are more opened up for you to explore but by the time your hoarding the Nth house, it also gets boring and you realize very fast that there is only so much there is in any building that’s not in the main road. A water bottle, tape, pills and the same thing again.

I did get bored half way through the game and just wanted to rush to the end so I was finished with the game and this kind of experience is awful to have in a game.

    Graphics and sound.

This is where it shines. The environment and sound is absolutely gorgeous nothing to say about this much. You will love it if it’s for the music or graphics. It is probably the best looking PS4 game to date. I’m surprised they could make everything so detailed.

    Conclusion.

This game made the worst fears of fans into reality. They kill the main protagonist and shove some random person to force you to like with very little character development (forgot to mention the whole game goes through only 3 days ingame time). Your struggle is irrelevant through out the game as the ending denies all that you were playing for. If this is what SJW stands for in gaming I’m afraid for the future of gaming. Rant over.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No game deserves zero points. The sound and music the graphics the animation are all amazing. But thats about it.
Everything the first game has built, was ruined in this game. No body cares about the character sexuality. its written well then no problem. But that is not the case here. Joel deserved a better death. Characters act out of characters is the problem. Lets look at Joel, someone who does not trust anybody, it took an entire game for him and Ellie trust eachother and love eachother.

Joel who could sens trouble miles away. Suddenly is surrounded with strangers and is stupid enough to give his accrual name? Are you kidding me. Gets killed by a ugly looking woman. Abby whos arms are bigger then my legs, and in fact her arms where smaller at the Paris trailer. Somehow it wasnt enough.

After she killes joel. I hated her. And then i was forced to play her to kill Ellie? And El is the now the antagonist?

This story could have gone much better. And sins this is a story based game, it only deserves my generous highest rating.

Characters that were cunning killing machines in the first game were turned into bumbling baffons. The game is full of shallow dialogue unmemorable characters, who are forgotten as soon as they leave the screen. The climax of the story only works if you care about both of the main characters; sadly the game doesn't provide anything meaningful that would make you actually care about Abbie.
We get so see a few beautiful Ellie-Joel moments in flashbacks (Ellie and Joel in the museum is easily the best part of the game). Sadly these flashbacks don't make the player feel better about TLoU2, since they only serve as a reminder of what this game could have been .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First I'll start with the pros. The graphics are amazing there is no denying that. And the gameplay while being nothing special is still pretty good, if you like the gameplay of TLoU 1 you will like 2. But aside from a few other superficial positives that's about it. The cons on the other hand are devastating, I get what they were going for with their anti-revenge narrative but they completely counteract that by having you mercilessly kill dozens of people to find Abby without a second thought only to say violence is bad when you find Abby herself. In the end the point comes across more as it's okay to kill all of the people around the person who wronged you or a loved one, but that person themselves is off limits. Because of this ending the player is left unsatisfied as nothing was ever really accomplished during the game. Expand

Also, this review is a year in the making. I unfortunately was unable to leave a review when the game game out because all negative reviews were locked. Loved TLOU1 and Left Behind. My two favorite games ever. TLOU2 is a complete departure from the first entry. The good: For the most part, Ellie and Dina had a cute relationship. It was nice to see Ellie happy post - Joel. The flashback scene at the museum with Joel and Ellie made me cry. Very beautiful. The graphics are phenomenal and the gameplay is, well TLOU gameplay. These games are story driven, but you’re not playing Arkham Knight or God of War here. It is what it is. The bad: depressing. It’s not edgy. The story is horribly paced. It uses every plot device in the book to make its point, and literally completely ignores any type of character development from the first game so that the story can push in the direction the writers think it needs to go. Forcing us to play as a new character didn’t work in Metal Gear solid 2, and it surely doesnt work here. Abby is given every dirty trick in the book to try to convince the viewer to sympathize with her but it doesn’t work. Playing with cute dogs? Wow ok. Then later in her arc she’s literally brutally murdering her friends because she met a little boy (from the enemy faction no less) a few hours earlier. There’s no payoff to the story. They should’ve left Joel and Ellie out of this game and subbed in completely néw characters if this is what they were going to do. Joel is dead, Ellie is figuratively dead (absolute no where for her character to go in a 3rd installment), Tommy is dead, Jesse is dead, Dina ran away, and so basically every trace of the first game was buried in this game. It’s horrible fan service and the reason why this game didn’t sell well (Sony/ND isn’t even listing the total sales since release because they’re embarrassing). The positive reviews were bought by ND. If you really want to see what people think about this game, watch play throughs from YouTubers. There’s no reason to give this game or any Last of Us IP title a dime of your money ever again. ND and Sony ruined one of the best video games ever. This was so bad I’m actually switching to Xbox when i get a gen 5 console.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TO EVERYONE LOOKING AT ALL THESE ZEROES THINKING THIS IS A HATE MOB - It is absolutely not. It is honestly people, like myself included, who quite frankly feel like they've been spat on by the writers, the developers and the game itself. Whilst I won't justify the zeroes, what I WILL justify is why this game at the very most deserves a five (even though I only want to give this a four). Why? Because the game looks beautiful and although the gameplay is a little dated and the extra mechanics feel a little forced, it's still fun to play. The rest is down to the story, and since this is a heavily story-driven game, let me tell you: it does not work. Not in the slighest.

To start with, literally everything that happens in this game hinges off Abby's decisions. Stemming all the way from the first game where she is the one who suggests it's the right call to just do the operation on Ellie anyway without allowing Joel any input whatsoever whilst he is still recovering or letting Ellie know what's going to happen, which is what then causes Joel to go in and kill Abby's father. Then there's also an infamous scene with her killing Joel. She has absolutely zero remorse for what happens. She doesn't even stop to think for a moment to consider the fact that she actually would be dead without Joel at one point either, she's just this vessel of hatred. And this literally has nothing whatsoever to do with anything LGBTQ+, it is - as plainly as I can put it - a badly written character doing stupid things, watching other people die who went out of their way to help her cause and she have not any kind of reflection on it at all.

This decision is what causes Ellie to then go out of her way to do horrible things, plenty of which is out of character for her and which even pissed me off because she was doing such stupid stuff, but all because Abby didn't like a certain character. Who, again, did what he did because he wanted Ellie alive and was the only person in that building in the first game who saw her as a human life. But then the game very blatantly starts to emotionally manipulate you: Ellie does all these horrible things, like killing dogs and a pregnant women (yes! how horrible!) because they're all she comes up against. Abby? Abby only ever pets dogs and has to fight against some weird cultish group of hateful people (I still can't fully remember what their motivations were but they were like the Hunters in the first). Notice how Ellie is only ever the one being forced into antagonistic situations whilst Abby is forced into the role of the good girl? There's no fight between either/or with the two, Ellie just fights innocent people and Abby just fights bad people. To me, that is the epitome of emotional manipulation. But it gets worse.

The ending itself is what for me, totally falls flat on its face. EVEN IF you are able to justify Abby's actions at the start, whilst saying Joel had it coming, sure, fine, but what happens with Abby? Nothing. And I hear people even going "but Ellie didn't want to become Abby so that's why she didn't do what she did" and quite frankly that excuse is an utter load of tripe. You don't force Ellie to do what she did and THEN have her decide to take the moral ground just to spare a character. That is pathetic storytelling. If you're going to do an anti-revenge story like that, EVERY main character who exacts revenge needs to be punished for it. It seems they only ever wanted to punish Ellie for even thinking about exacting revenge, okay, fine. Abby, on the other hand? There's zero sense of remorse. Zero thought for the fact her own actions were literally what caused EVERYTHING in this game to happen. Zero compassion for Joel saving her life. It's poor. If you want to do a good anti-revenge story you should look at the Red Dead Redemption story, because even that allows you that sweet revenge whilst also then having the consequences catch up and it NOT feel like you've just had someone spit on your face and go "you're not allowed to retaliate to that because you're evil!"

It's terribly written. Its own moral trips up on its own defence of a foolish, ignorant, spiteful character who I couldn't even force myself to like even just with her own moments in the game. And I'm not someone who has anything whatsoever against anything LGBTQ+ which is what quite a few of these review bombers here are for, but the character they had as the face of that agenda is just a **** person. There's no other words for it.

I'm done with Naughty Dog. Druckmann himself said that he had an agenda to push in this. Well there you are, Druckmann... and funnily enough you've actually pissed off quite a large chunk of that group of people you were fighting to represent (I make no joke of this, ask most of those people who have actually played and finished this game). But all those sweet brownie points will get you a free cookie now.

At first, as a player, I didn’t give a **** about the soul, namely the murder of Joel, then they didn’t allow me to avenge it. The game is about revenge, through the whole game we carried revenge, killing innocent people and not only, but in the end we just let Abby go without justice, that is, the plot for the sake of what we ultimately cannot to do. I would understand if there was a choice or the ending came from the player’s actions, but no. The game is great, I don’t argue with this, but the ending was ruined, even the gray morality cannot be inserted here, a la she forgave her, huh, is it that Ally went for the heads of other people for the sake of this, is this normal in principle?

I wanted to root for Abby, I did root for her at the end of the game. That fact that Joel save Abby and then Abby killed him while also presenting no conflict is disturbing. SJW in the game didn't bother me, I just wish it didn't feel forced and the writing was better. Ellie knows why Joel died. Ellie states she will find out why they killed him. Ellie admits to Abby she knows why she killed Joel. Abby let Ellie live twice and Ellie tried to kill her again, instead of having some remorse while letting Abby down from the pillars. The purpose of the whole story means nothing. By the way you can't make a vaccine for fungi, at least not with modern medical advancements. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only feeling I felt when I finished the game was sadness. I can't really believe how the second game can be so bad, while the first game is so beautiful. The Last of Us was a brand I valued a lot. I still value the first game very much and I enjoy it even though it has been 7 years. However, I was very uncomfortable even when I finished the second game for the first time. Maybe I gave the game such a bad score because I was very emotional, but I am sure this game does not deserve 95. There are thousands of games and movies about zombies. What makes The Last of Us so popular is their characters. Father-daughter relationship between Joel and Ellie. These two characters make this game valuable. I'm not saying anything to Joel's death, I'm just bothered that it was done so badly. While I missed these two characters so much, I think we should have spent some time with them. Not with flashbacks! I think it would be a better time for Joel to die later. The death of Joel in the first hours of the game made me angry, I was angry not because he died, I was angry because we couldn't spend time with him. I also congratulate whoever came up with the idea of playing with Abby. He/She couldn't make the game worse. I felt that the time I played with Abby was wasted. Another issue is that Abby isn't dead at the end of the game. Ellie is returning for revenge, but just losing more. Two fingers and Dina. So if this is a story of revenge, it's definitely Abby's story. Why is Ellie in the cover art? You have destroyed people's trust with false advertisements. In my country, this game is 1 in 4 of the minimum salary. I'm not sorry for the money that I spent. I’m sorry because they ruined the game that I love so much. Such a disappointment. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall disappinted, i'll go into detail bellow:

The ending is the most disappointing part of the game which is riddled with disappointments.

The graphics are beyond good, this is what next gen should look like.
The gameplay is nothing special, just like the first game, you backstab a bunch of people then shoot the few that are left. The story is full of plotholes , Joel trusting a group of armed people he just met giving them his name and following them into the basement of a house located near their settlement, not only does it contradict the characters personality (the untrusting joel) but even the world building , because throughout the game you see that ALL TRESSPASSERS are killed on sight which is logical in an apocalyptic world but Joel saves a tresspasser for no reason gives her his name knowing his head is wanted for the fireflies incident then follows them into a basement x). The ending is way worse (ENDING SPOILER WARNING)

, as Ellie decides that her vengeance is worth leaving everything behind and killing abby , but then when she finds abby she let's her go (until now I kinda understand) but then she threatens to kill abby's friend unless she fights her to the death and when she wins the deathmatch she decides to just let her go ?!? This sounds like a kid's story but it's the real ending we got. How many times can you change your mind about something so big in 2min , she had MONTHS to forget about the vendetta and still decided to leave Tommy her wife AND KID to kill her, only to backpedal at the end so you can make another sequel ? And then she understands that vengeance is meaningless ? How do you understand that vengeance is meaningless when you didn't even get your vengeance ?

Oh and they also find the time to show you a trans coming out story turn bad because his mom is part of a cult that doesn't accept trans rights. In an apocalyptic world, **** trans rights in the zombie apocalypse. And don't get me started on the media treatment of this game, having an uncensored sex scene is fine because she's trans but you censure Devil May Cry 5 because it's too explicit ? xD

Summary: absolute garbage overall The story is forced with hundreds of plot holes and characters that feel devoid of any redeeming qualities. It feel like 30 hour revenge porn without a climax. The game play was OKAY but didn’t make big strides over the last installment. The graphics were amazing, but that’s about all I can say were good.

The characters made choices COMPLETELY out of character for them strictly to force the new story points they wanted. It’s like they wanted to go back and rewrite the first installment so they twisted things into reality that left everyone with a slack jaw. A lot of people say that naughty dog seems to be pushing an LGBTQ agenda. At first I thought this was nothing but bigots being bigots. In reality they have a point. The first kiss and Elli's relationship had a place and a point. It seemed like it belonged in the story. Maybe even the transgender kid, but the forced sex scene between a transgender and a man made absolutely no sense. Just like a bunch of the plot holes it was just there. No back story, no reason to exist, just shoehorned into the story. The three main characters being two transgender and a lesbian seems a bit out of place as well. It isn’t representative of the makeup of our general population.

This game left me feeling down, empty and thinking what kind of garbage was that? Not what I want to feel from a GAME. Sure a game can shock (especially story driven ones) but this was just one forced, crap execution of plot and character holes. Save your money and buy it in the dollar bin in a few months where I’m sure it will end up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Upsides: Graphics and gameplay
Downsides: Its plot, no one gives a **** about Abby because she was not introduced before, and then suddenly out of nowhere she kills the main protagonist, one, if not the most loved character by the people that played The Last of Us before and then we are obligated to play her if we want to move on playing. I'm no writer, but this is **** up, I can see Joel dying, no problem but Joel isn't stupid, in The Last of Us (Part 1) he RAN OVER A GUY THAT WAS FAKING BEING IN PAIN AND NEEDED HELP, he had survival instinct, and he wouldn't take any chance, suddenly he is inside a house with armed strangers he does not know, in the middle of the room, not even keeping his back safe just waiting to die, if you want to kill Joel you could at least maintain him into character. And then the conclusion, horrendous, let me say I did enjoy the detail that Ellie lost 2 fingers and she couldn't play the music Joel taught her, as a way to say that she lost more than gained. But she killed over 100 people at the very **** least to get to Abby and then she has a change of heart? That is not how it works, it's ok to murder a pregnant woman to get to the woman you want and then you don't kill her, its inconsistency.
I guess The Last of Us 2 was meant to make us feel the cold world that they live in, but guess what, I and many other people didn't feel **** we felt like the 7 years of waiting were completely shat on, killing Joel that way didn't make me go sad and all, it just made me pissed, he could have died coldly that is not what this is about, just had to **** kill him and made his death mean something, anything, it isn't worth killing a beloved character for the purpose of showing that the world is bad and cold, it is worth to kill him, with purpose, thing he didn't even have since Ellie didn't **** kill Abby, and got the revenge. You don't kill every **** person you see, that weren't even related to the death of Joel to have a change of heart at the end with the goddamn killer right in front of you.
I'm honestly just going to believe that this whole joke was the aftermath of Ellie smoking weed with Dina and she just had a nightmare, a bad trip.

Well, Naughty Dog was certainly successful at leading me to that obvious conclusion. However, the way that they conveyed the message of hate was so reckless that it was completely counterproductive. It only lead me to hate the game itself and want revenge inflicted upon the writer himself for his blatant disrespect of both the original characters, as well as the passion of fans themselves towards those very same characters. The writing could have been done much more "constructively" in regard to both character development and plot. It needed more purpose, I honestly felt like this game was void of any and it even bled over to make the original game's plot irrelevant. It's disgraceful that no "critics" were even remotely critical of this game. It has its strengths sure, but it certainly has its considerable flaws too. If graphics and gameplay are your driving force in selection of games considered to be enjoyable, this will be an acceptable addition. I reckon this is the worst thing that’s happened thus far in 2020 and that’s no small feat. TLOU 1 was probably the best single player gaming experience i ever had. Visuals and score were nice for sure, story/plot was cliched but worked, gameplay was ok enough to serve the purpose of keeping this a game and not a movie (although it often felt that way) but what ultimately elevated the game to what it ended up becoming were the characters and more specifically the relationship between Joel and Ellie and how it developed. Throughout the gameplay I grew to love both characters and was able to experience points of views that I had not been able to before this deeply.
Long story short, the game didn’t need a sequel but we got one anyway, and it sucks.
Devs apparently forgot what made the first game a masterpiece and disrespectfully threw it out the window, just to replace it with a crappy story worthy of the simplest soap operas and went all in the side aspects that don’t even deliver, such as creating larger levels that give you the illusion of choice that’s not there, exploration that hardly is rewarded, dated combat and crafting system, puzzles where the only challenge is to keep yourself together whilst having to do the same boring and unappealing quest again and again, and so many more.
Obviously, the expectations for this game since day 1 were too high for everyone to be ever satisfied but I can’t really figure how they could’ve messed up the story any more than they have.
Extra things to keep in mind: full of glitches, same combat system than the first game bit a few minor additions, ultra repetitive gameplay.
Technically speaking they did a great job but to me it’s all taken away by the fact that they focused on the wrong aspects and that is widely known how much they overwork and burn out their devs.
I truly hope that there are repercussions about the shameless false advertising that their team pulled off since I’m 100% sure that without tricking their fan base their sales would’ve been a lot less.
They will keep on deleting bad reviews with bot pretext and accusing fans of bigots whilst the bast majority if us loved the first game and the DLC as well.
Don’t buy it, if curious just watch a lets play.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is an honest review from someone who has actually bought and played the game, not someone who just watched a play through on YouTube. I also avoided all leaks prior to playing. Review:

Absolutely awful. Extremely disappointed in the way the story played out and how poorly it was written. I've been patiently waiting for seven years for this game and WAS a massive fan of the first. If you are debating on purchasing this game...just don't. Where to begin?

First of all, Joel dies. Okay fine. People die. However, as others point out it seems like someone writing the story just wanted to rush to get rid of him.

As we've learned from TLOU1, Joel is very untrusting of strangers. In TLOU2 he is also wanted by many people. So why is he giving his name and location to strangers? Very poor writing. I found the way he died to be in very poor taste as well. Abby. Trans? Okay. I'm fine with that. Being forced to play as her(?) after killing Joel? Why? What exactly is this suppose to convey to the player? That she had her(?) own motivation for Joel's murder? I don't care about Abby or her reasons. Yes, it's an post apocalyptic wasteland where people die every day, but why force us to play as some irrelevant character? Why have Joel killed by said irrelevant character? Imagine if this same formula was used in your favorite movie/TV show. Would Breaking Bad be as great if Walt died in the second season and the protagonist got replaced by some random character we weren't emotionally invested in? How about if Frodo gets killed by an Orc and then we have to spend a full movie with a POV of said Orc? This formula doesn't work. Joel dying towards the end by saving Ellie and telling her how he views her as a daughter wouldn't have left such a sour taste in my mouth. Or anything close to that. What really gets me is I remember seeing trailers of TLOU2 where you play as Joel further on in the story. It feels like the same scenes and game play were replaced by other characters in the actual game, so it's like Naughty Dog lied. Also, the directors self insert into the game where he has sex with Abby just felt weird.

Yes, you read that correctly. The director of TLOU2 made a character of himself in the game and had sex with the trans character. Again, why?

Playing on, the game just feels boring, repetitive, and pointless. I guess it's cool if your someone who's in 30 straight hours of torture porn. Ellie eventually tracks down Abby and kills her out of revenge? No. She let's Abby go. Because killing another human being is wrong...or something like that. Ya know, despite the fact she did not hesitate to kill hundreds of people since the start of her journey in TLOU1.

Without a doubt, the story in this game is so bad I honestly don't want to play the first one anymore. It's like a close friend who got on drugs and then stole $60 from you. You don't want to go back to that friendship despite the good times you guys had.

For all the "journalists" and "critics" saying people hate this game because it has LGBT+ characters in it. No. I'm glad companies are being inclusive to other groups, but the story in this game is just bad. To quote Neil Druckmann, director of TLOU2, "The Last of Us Part 2 isn't for everyone. I'd rather have people passionately hate it than just be like, 'Yeah, it was okay.'"

Welp, you got your wish buddy. What a massive disappointment. So much wasted potential to what could have been the best game of 2020, maybe even the decade. This game was a huge let down. I will never purchase another Naughty Dog game.

I think what Naughty Dog did with the last of us part 2 is disgusting. Naughty dog lied to my face they said that Joel will be a playable character well if you count that 30 seconds horse riding at the begining of the game than **** yourself and also they have said that Ellie will be the only playable character in the game thats an other lie because after the first half oft the game you will be playing with a stranger who killed Joel brutally and you have to play with that character and the game wants you to love that character who killed Joel who i think one of my favourite gaming characters of all time. The second half of the story is unnecessary and cringe when i was playing with that stranger character whose name is Abby i felt disgusted because i did not want to play with her they tried to show the other side of the war and the people who we were killing with Ellie aren't evil and they have human sides too but they could have done it in only 1 chapter not in 3. At the second part of the game i felt like that Naughty dog ran out of ideas and they just mixed up something very fast. Not to forget that the ending of the game is really bad because when you are fighting with Abby and in the end Ellie can't kill her i mean i can see what Naughty Dog tried to show us that killing enybody isnt gonna solve anything but this is how it has to be ? Every major character in the game got killed and in the end i felt like i did this whole thing for nothing. The last os us 1 wast great because of its great characters and memorable father and daughter story line for Joel and Ellie but the second episode just lacks everything which the first was so good in.

The given story doesn't miss any opportunity to portray him/ her as broken by the world, bitter, unloving and above all: unsympathetic. Instead of slipping into the skin of the second protagonist of the first game, you are forced to play with the antagonist. I can't imagine that anybody likes him/ her, but with every scene the game tries to emphasize his/ her good side, the whole thing happens so unbelievable, that the whole story actually becomes to a soap opera. No comparison to the ingenious first part. The actual gameplay is too repetitive and frustrating, I often had problems with the camera or the incorrectly working "X-ray view". Also, dodging in close combat, especially in hectic situations, is poorly solved. Other games have shown how it works better. Graphically, the game is excellent, but as the story currently stands, the game should have ended better with the first part. Expand

Well first off it had a bad story Joel dying to a golf club is not a good way for him to die and why would he stay in the middle of a room filled with strangers and give his name while the company blatantly lied to us about Joel being later in the game and you play as Joel’s killer and they try to make you sympathise with her but you play as her longer than you play as Ellie this ruined the franchise the original one had great story telling and character development but this one
was your average revenge plot gone horribly wrong Ellie literally kills everyone but let’s Joel’s killer go I could think of multiple ways to make this better like maybe Joel dies by sacrificing himself for Ellie near the end of the game then let Ellie chase after Abby. Do not buy this game the other thousands of negative reviews are just trying to warn you not review bombing people wouldn’t be doing this if they didn’t care so it has a reason because this game isn’t about gameplay you buy for the story and it is horrible. Then there’s outright manipulation replacing Joel in the trailers with Jessie. Also really Metacritic? Blocking reviews including my first one.

    Gameplay- 5-6/10
Graphics- 10/10 (which I don’t really care about graphics too much)
    Story 0/10
Do not buy this game since it’s a story game and not something you buy for graphics save your money.

The plot in this game is terrible compared to the first game, new characters are extremely cringeworthy and uncharismatic and as a player you will be forced to play as one of those badly written pathetic characters. Gameplay wise this game is not bad but the story will ruin the whole experience if you are the fan of the original game. I regret buying this game

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the worst game I've played in the last decade. I was a huge fan of the first game, and played it on release in 2013 on the PS3. I've played the remastered version on the PS4 13 times on record, and it remains one of my favourite games of all time.

This game seems to undo everything that made the first game so great. I felt misled by ths trailers, as we actually end up playing 70% of the game as Abby and not Ellie. A character Naughty Dog forces us to play as, and one of the most unlikeable characters in the history of media. Seriously, this character is horribly written and there's nothing to like. No, she's not transgender like many people would have you believe but she is not built like any real female so this makes her even more unbelievable. She does horrible things to characters we care about, and they force us to do some of these awful things as this she-hulk like character to the point I nearly stopped playing. It's that bad. The graphics are gorgeous, but that's it really. The gameplay is similar to the first, so it's good fun, but when you don't care about the story or character you're playing as it just doesn't work. I hated all 21 hours of this game (not the 30-35 advertised), have now deleted it and will not re-install. Very disappointed with this after a long 7 year wait. Booked time off work, and upgraded to a PS4 pro console for nothing.

Very good graphics, no one is surprised and everyone knew that they were going to be good, good gameplay, the story was very bad, Joel's death has been quite bad after that event, everything revolves around a revenge that does not materialize completely absurd and the end is bad enough, it leaves a huge gap, I do not share the negative opinions about elly's sexuality, it is only a detail, the most important thing was the story which was very bad, 7 years to create such a bad story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Must tell, I haven't played the game, because I do not own PS4. But I have seen a YouTube clip with all the story elements, 11 hours straight, heard some of the opinions. And also, I consider myself a fan of a first game.

I would like to begin with something good.
As I have seen, the game has an amazing level of graphics, detail, sound, and design. This is something worth admiring but is it the reason why would people want to buy it? Not really.
The gameplay turned out to be a slight improvement of the first game. More moves in fighting sequences, free-roaming in a semi-open world.

But everything is pretty minor because the real gem is always the story in that type of games. And we have a serious problem here. The main character of the first game, Joel, dies in a really stupid way, even I can see that. Too rushed, to dumb, too convenient for the new scenario. They made it bad, dramatic as heck, and pretty much pointless. I am not going to judge the dialogues, some of them are a bit cringy in my opinion, that is rather subjective, so out of the picture.
Then Jesse. It was a wonderful character, I can even see his appearance make a good impact after Joel's death. But the thing is, he dies like he is nothing. Another loved character who we would love to know better dies. Again, Abby. Oh, and she shot Tommy in the face (but he survives). It seems like she is apex predator, kicks asses of every good guy. They made her look so bad, that you are starting to hate her. The story overall is a bit on the longer side, but they do not use that length to do something good with the whole game. When the people who were in the room when Joel is getting killed die, I felt nothing, like at all. They tried to give us some drama about it, but in the end, even when she kills a pregnant woman, she shakes it off easily, so why should we bother?
Then, when Abby did everything bad she could, we play as her. I was disgusted, have no better word. I did not care even a bit about her, after the bonds we made with our good characters. And to justify her all we see is that Joel killed her father, who, apparently, is the only person who can make a cure (let's be honest, its rather a vaccine, but it has questionable effectiveness, it's spores after all).
The ending is something worth mentioning. The final fight is supposed to be intense but turns out to be just trash. Nothing enjoyable. After Ellie saw a Joel flashback, she just let go Abby, the girl she was after for so long because she crippled Tommy, beat her up, nearly kills Dina, kills Jesse and Joel. Oh, and she bit off 2 fingers like a minute before that. Why let her go? Who knows.
After she has finished, she returns to the farmhouse, where is Dina supposed to be with a kid, but finds nothing. She leaves Joel's guitar in the house and goes into the woods.
After everything I have seen, I do not see here 7 f*cking years of work.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am giving this game a 3 because this is all I can afford to give it based on the graphics.

Let me say this clearly: this game looks gorgeous. The vistas are breathtaking. I am giving it this much as an homage for the absolutely impressive work the graphic designers and the coders had to put in for this game to look the way it looks.

Going back to everything not looks related, this game is horrendous. It might've gotten a better score from everyone if it wasn't the long awaited sequel of a masterpiece that appeared 7 years ago. Even so though, I doubt it would ever be worth more than a 5.
The story is so poorly written, even if you don't immediately and absolutely despise it from the 2nd hour of the game, you would be left scratching your head indefinitely at how badly this was handled.

Characters don't behave consistently, not only in comparison with the previous title, but between scenes in the same game. From the classics as Joel becoming brain dead after 30 years of surviving as a complete bad ass and Ellie being utterly useless and dumbfounded at every event, to Abby herself not being consistent in her pursuit of killing Ellie.

it is such a shame that so many people have been waiting for 7 years for a return of their favourite DUO, just for it to be shattered 2 hours (at best) into the game.
This game is around 11 hours of cutscenes and scenery and slow gameplay moments. Basically everything that doesn't include killing, looting and hiding. Out of 11 hours, we get 1 hour of Ellie and joel. It is such a disrespectful approach, I don't even know how to put it into words.
This is THE game of 2013 for me and by far, without a shadow of doubt, one of the BEST games I have ever witnessed in my 22 years of existing.
To get such a disappointing excuse of a story, just to push some agendas that nobody cares about in the gaming space (since they are 90% of the time shoved down our throats, not properly introduced and developed) is blasphemous.
DO NOT buy this game. As far as it pains me to say this, it's not worth a single penny because the top dogs at Naughty Dog just didn't give a single **** about this game or about us.

It pains me to think that most of the fallout will be felt by the people that spent their livelihoods crunching time to make this game its best version. The programmers, designers and art people did what they had to. Don't ever hate them.
Don't ever assume they can do anything to change what the top 10% of the company wants to do. Dislike those people. Especially Neil Druckmann. He deserves all the critique.

Naughty Dog, you seemed peerless for a good while. Uncharted 4 was amazing, everyone hoped TLOU 2 would be too. But after seeing how you handled it with 7 years worth of time to do it, I can only hope you will touch the Uncharted series ever again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As most people on here, I am really disappointed with this game, especially as it has literally been the game I have looked forward to the most in years.

    Positives:

Either way I'll start off with the positives, the graphics are stunning and the music and general environment you're playing in certainly holds up to what I've been expecting from Naughty Dog. That's really the only reason, why I'm even rewarding this game with any points. Also there are some new mechanics to the gameplay although it is mostly the same as in the original.

    Negatives:

You start off in the game and the game starts off very quietly until they kill off Joel, which is in itself already quite a bad decision. Killing off one of the players' most beloved characters for shock value is really not the best decision. Especially as Joel had barely made an appearance in the game before his brutal murder. Ellie goes on to find the killer, Abby and basically goes on a revenge trip together with Dina, her girlfriend. After Joel's death I was quite shocked and already had lost some of the appetite to even continue the game. But after a short break I decided to continue playing regardless. I was determined to kill Abby, the person who killed Joel. After getting about halfway through the game Abby suddenly breaks into their safehouse and Jesse, another side character who I had grown to like was again killed off for pure shock value in a very distasteful manner. Before knowing the outcome of that event it switches to Abby, the person you just really hate, like seriously, I don't know if I've ever hated a character more in a video game. So now you're supposed to play as the villain and get a little bit of backstory as to why she was so obsessed with Joel. Alright he killed her father, but do you really think that would make me suddenly like Abby? No I still hate her, like many people considering the reviews I've already read.

Making the player play the game again through her point of view was a really bad decision and also what ultimately killed off my intention of seeing through the game. I played through the first couple of hours of Abby's story, but I will never start liking her and I feel like Naughty Dog greatly miscalculated how easy it would be to convince us of her. Also the characters around her are all also either unlikeable or just forgettable. Which is also a perfect way to describe this game. Naughty Dog ruined the series by making a story as bad as this one and I don't even know if I'm going to finish the game. It's a shame as this is the first time I have never been disappointed this much by a game and considering it came from Naughty Dog, a company I always trusted, that's even worse.

If you want my advice, don't buy this game. You'd get more enjoyment out of just replaying the first game, which was truly a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Whilst this game has amazing graphics and gameplay the main reason to play these types of games is for the story and the story in TLOUp2 is horrable. It's not because joel died or because of sexuality in game it's because it's not thought out well. My personal biggest complaint is the horrable way the game ended. Why would she feel guilty about killing joel's killer but not feel guilty about killing hundreds of other people who didn't personally hurt her or her family, and the main theme I got from the game is that everything has consequences, how is letting her live her punishment for killing her father figure.
But if you're looking for a beautiful movie like game then it gets a 10/10

    BAD THINGS: THE ENTIRE STORY.

Last of Us 1 had the best story in any games released till now in my opinion. Now, Naughty dog just gone and released the worst story-based game in gaming history. I waited 7 years for this game just to be angry and disappointed . Last of Us 2 ruins the legacy of its predecessor. The only good part in the story was that one flashback in the museum. How can you kill off Joel; one of the most beloved characters in such a dishonorable way? This story makes no sense what so ever. What even was that ending? The ending didn't avenge Joel or do anything other than making Ellie lose her fingers. The ending is so disrespectful to Joel and Ellie's character arcs. These two got the worst endings and Abby got a good ending? Ellie killed so many people to get to Abby and she just forgives her 'cause revenge ain't gonna get you anywhere? I mean, do any writers of this game have a brain? And, playing as Abby made me wanna break my PlayStation. Why would I wanna play as Abby? I don't wanna feel any sympathy for ever because I don't care. I just wanna kill her. Just cause she know her backstory, we're supposed to forgive her? SHE BRUTALLY MURDERED JOEL. No matter how hard Naughty dog tried, NO ONE LIKES ABBY.

Overall, I left angry and disappointed by the end with the garbage-ass game. Like, this game was straight trash. DON'T BUY THIS GAME FOR YOUR SAKE. DON'T READ ANY REVIEWS FROM COMPANIES 'CAUSE THEY'RE FAKE. If you want reviews, ask the gamers.

The gameplay is decent at best and is similar to the first one with a couple new things added. The storyline is what really kills the game in my opinion because it is literally a revenge story without the revenge. I also didn't like how we had to play as Abby since, she killed Joel and throughout abby playthrough they try to make us like her and make her seem like kill torturing and killing Joel was the right thing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t understand how it’s possible to butcher a franchise the way naughty dog did with the last of us. The first game was phenomenal, amazing story with believable characters that we grew to care for. However for some reason they just decided to throw the impact and everything the first game set out to do away with part 2. Why, WHY would they think it’s a good idea to have a character we’ve never even heard of until this game, kill the most important and beloved character of this world they’ve built, in the first few hours of the game? Not only that, but make the players take control of this person for more than half the game? Playing the game and completing the story did not make me sympathize for this character WHATSOEVER. Putting the amazingly put together gameplay, graphics, and voice acting aside, the absolutely infuriating narrative completely destroys the experience. Hopefully Naughty dog will learn from this because this game had so much potential to be better than its predecessor. I’m gonna go replay Uncharted 4 now. Expand
