Well imma not get into too much detail since many people have already. But I was ultimately just disappointed in this game. I don't get hyped for games much anymore, but I was looking forward to this game. Unfortunately I was let down with the the execution of the story and lack of innovation to this game.

Totally dissappointed with the direction the game took, gameplay and graphics obviously amazing but the story bombed, it must have been a 5 mi ute brainstorm to develop this story with the killing of Joel thrown in because the writers thought it would be a defining moment of gaming and it totally wasn’t due to the lazy and nonsensical way it was written.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us Part 2 is a story about the cycle of revenge and violence. In my opinion it was a massive let down. The technical side of the game is one of the best I have seen in a video game from the graphics, gameplay all of that stuff is perfect. The story however is the most key factor in this series and this instalment is just poor I have completed the game twice to make sure my opinion remained the same and it was. The first major thing I had a problem with was of course Joel dying the way he did he didn’t go out like a hero or not in a memorable way it was brutal and disrespectful to his character and the first game. The second thing I had a problem with was Abby to be honest if the players played as her for the first half of the game and given the player a more clear understanding of the motivation for wanting to kill Joel and we would have cared about her more if we sure the pain she was going through before she killed him. The last thing I had a problem with was the ending it seemed that naughty dog didn’t want to kill Abby because they want to make a part 3 with Lev and Abby but to me the whole game built it up to the moment your going to finally get your revenge but Ellie lets Abby go to stop the cycle. The ending should of been where Ellie was at the farm with Dina and Jj and been happy for once I found myself just wanting it to end because of the disrespect shown to almost every character from the first game. I think Naughty dog should make a part 3 to give a concrete and happy ending to Ellie’s story in the last of us series and for god sake don’t include Abby no one will buy it. Ultimately Naughty dog failed in giving at least a decent story about revenge. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us part II is a tough game to review since after I beat the game I enjoyed it and would have given the game a 9/10. However, after thinking about the story and analyzing the game's story, I realized how poor the writing was. The gameplay is a 10/10, it's versatile, each combat encounter can be tackled in a different way. The player can stealth kill enemies, go in guns blazing, or mix gunplay with stealth. The sound is fantastic, gun shots sound realistic, the voice acting is top notch and the environment sounds are great like the sound of the currents of a stream or the snow being trampled under the players feet. Another impressive aspect of the game are the graphics. It is impressive that the ps4 can output visuals like in the Last of Us part II. The first Last of Us was known for its excellent story and satisfying ending. The Last of Us part II falls short in the story and because the main selling point of the game was the narrative, I deduct 6 points for the manipulative writing. Neil Druckman clearly wants to manipulate the player into vilifying Ellie and loving Abby. However, Neil and Haley Gross fail in every conceivable way. First of all, in the story Ellie kills a dog when she goes to the aquarium, however, when playing as Abby the player plays with the dog that Ellie kills. The reason ellie hunts Abby is because she kills Joel in the most brutal way, its a cheap shock value move. The problem is Abby just is an irredeemable character, she revels in violence and killing. For example, Abby feels nothing for how she killed Joel or when she goes to hunt Ellie for killing her friends she holds a knife to Dina's neck about to slit her throat when Ellie tells her she is pregnant and Abby responds "good", reveling in the idea of slitting Dina's throat, before Lev stops her from slitting Dina's throat. Ellie, on the other hand, feels remorse when she kills people involved in Joel's death. Ellie beats a woman to death in order to force information out of her, and Ellie feels remorse. Ellie kills two people in the aquarium, one of whom was pregnant, Ellie collapses in remorseful guilt. Even though Neil and Haley wanted players to feel for Abby and shun Ellie, the opposite ends up happening. Players end up feeling for Ellie and hating Abby with a passion. The reason I use the writers names instead of the company, Naughty dog that developed the game is because in the past when Amy Henig was in charge, the writing was excellent and the games were superb. Those games under Amy were 9/10's. Neil Druckman cheapens Naughty Dog's IPs and should not be forgiven for ruining the Last of Us series for good. Expand

The Last of Us 2 is a huge disappointment. It's really sad to see how much effort went into making this game - while the graphics, sound, acting and technical side are top of the line, it's all wasted on a story that so bad it's mindboggling. Just to get it out of the way, I would give the audio-visual side of the game a 10/10, without a doubt. Voice acting - 10/10, best on the market. TheThe Last of Us 2 is a huge disappointment. Just to get it out of the way, I would give the audio-visual side of the game a 10/10, without a doubt. Voice acting - 10/10, best on the market. The game runs smooth on normal PS4, so I have to congratulate all the people at Naughty Dog that worked on this side of the game, you are masters at what you do, keep at the good work! It's a true shame all your efforts were wasted on this game.
There is no multiplayer, so it's a big detriment for the fans of multi form the first game (like me...). Developers said the reason for this is that they focused on the story and boy doesn't that look like a bad choice now.
The core gameplay loop is about fighting enemies in a stealth/shooting sections and exploring the world to find more resources. It's basically the same as in the first game and I think that would be ok, if the AI wasn't so bad. I played in on normal difficulty and it's a joke. Once you realize there is plenty of ammo and resources laying around, the best strategy in the game is to just sit behind cover and wait for the enemies to line up for headshots. This make combat pointless and repetitive. The game is also way too long for this type of gameplay to stay interesting, so I was completely bored of it after around 10 hours, and this has never happened to me in the first game.
The difference is that in the first game, the story is very interesting and there is no pointless filler. Not so in this one – the story of The Last of Us 2 is one of the biggest mistakes I have ever seen. Old characters are being disposed of to make room for new ones, which isn’t a bad thing in itself, but the execution is horrible. None of the new characters are interesting, they feel paper-thin and disposable. I didn’t care for any of them in the first half of the game, and then the game pulls a twist and makes you play a different, new character which is not only unlikable, is downright despicable. I understand what the writers tried to do here – show you the other side of the story, and how we are all human – but they fail miserably. Any investment in the story player might have had is gone at this point and playing any further is just torture, as without any sympathy for the characters the game gets INCREDIBLY BORING. The second part also feels like a long, meaningless fetch quest, it’s long and meaningless, clearly filler. You will try to skip as much of it as possible just to get to the end, only to see one of the worst endings in gaming history. There are no redeeming factors here.
You can really sum up the story like this – first it shocks you for no reason other then shock itself, nothing happens for around 10 hours while you have to deal with empty, unlikeable characters, just to get to the second part when characters switch and nothing matters anymore. And, cherry on top, meaningless, pointless ending. It really makes you wonder what the massage was supposed to be, as right now it’s “if you want revenge, make sure you go all out and be merciless, as that’s the way to end up on the good side – if you hesitate and show mercy, you will lose everything”. Is this really what the writers intended? If they wanted to show On the Metacritic scale of 0-10, story gets a 0.
One thing I would commend the writers on is the representation of minority groups in the game – it’s very welcome, especially in these times. At the same time, I can’t help feeling that the first game did it much better, as it wasn’t so on the nose there. Still – I’m happy to see it
Without a good story, there is nothing to glue together other elements and it’s shocking how empty it all feels. And, as I stated above, this makes the whole game very, very boring and a chore to play. I can’t give Last of Us 2 more then 4/10 in the current state. Inclusion of a good multiplayer mode could bump it to 5/10, or even 6/10 if it was superb. Last of Us 2 will be a big scar on Naughty Dogs reputation in the years to come, a big let down from a studio that Could Do No Wrong, and then went ahead to do Very Wrong. Do not buy this game, it’s a waste.

Gameplay portion is literally the same as last game and i already though that the first game's mechanics were mediocre at best but the story and the characters made up for it, on the other hand we have an opposite situation here. The story is god awful, pacing is terrible (especially in places where there are flashbacks, like those could have been switched around to ease up the dramatic twists happening super early in the game), and the characters' actions make no sense. You know some of these characters from the first game, you know how they act and carry themselves around but here IT MAKES NO SENSE WHAT THEY DO. The theme is the most generic thing ever compared to the unique theme of the first game. Overall dont even bother, I'm only giving a 4 because of how good the graphics are and the writing in the flashbacks were pretty decent, otherwise it would be a complete 0. Expand

Was a huge fan of the original story. Though to be honest, I only played it through once as I wasn't really into the mechanics of the game-play. As you could imagine then, I was only invested in seeing how this fictional world and the characters within it would develop in the sequel (whilst trying to avoid the spoilers of course).
Here's my takeaway after experiencing this lengthy game:

Here's my takeaway after experiencing this lengthy game: ND focused on furthering the dystopian angle together with a revenge-based plot driver, which sounds like the makings of a very compelling and tense game on paper. However, without balancing it with any humanity from any of its characters, the world just feels like a hollow sandbox for clickers, dog murderers and bigots with the central characters feeling artificial because their personalities and actions are just ticking boxes instead of driving a compelling story.
It's a real shame, but I just can't score this above a 4 as it just didn't work for me as a story. Full credits to the design and software teams behind it though, who created a super-high quality graphical experience! I heard that people who work at ND are treated inhumanely during the crunch period, so they deserve much much more than this for their talents!

Sadness of witnessing how an engineering marvel of gaming (graphics, game physics, AI) left me with so many mixed and bitter emotions. Sadness of listening to Gustavo Santaolalla’s soundtrack and being frustrated with myself for not being able to feel the emotions that he would have wanted me to experience during a specific sequence or for a specific character (with just one notable exception). And it is really sad, because we can all image the hundreds and thousands of hours of effort that people at Naughty Dog put into this game. It is just inconceivable to me how they could forget what made the first game so special. And I really don’t want to judge them for the decisions they made when creating this story. I really don’t. But it just feel to me that, at that first meeting, in that first brainstorming session, someone raised their hand and said “in the end, it’s just a game, right? Spoiler alert ladies and gentlemen, I hated it, and let me explain why. The introduction of a completely new antagonist that upends the lives of our characters Joel and Ellie works in theory, but it’s poorly executed in the writing in this game. The antagonist isn’t truly built up enough before the death scene of a universally loved character. The death scene was, in my honest opinion done the way that it was done to induce shock and garner hatred for Abbie. The problem is, once that hatred for Abbie settles in, the game shoves you into playing as her, to fight another beloved character. I don’t know what naughty dog and company were smoking when they came up with this, but I want a hit of it. As a huge fan of the original game, and coming into this one open minded and spoiler free, I can safely say... don’t waste your money folks. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, lets get into the things this game does well.
This is one of the best looking games I have ever played. The visuals are nothing short of magic done by naughty dog.The gameplay is solid, although not much of an improvement over the first one.The animations are incredible, and the acting done by the cast(regardless if you like their character or not) is probably the best in the business. This game is a technical master piece, and no one can deny that.

The story, however,is what the first game did best, and what people were expecting from this game, too. I can't believe I am writing this on a naugbty dog game, developers responsible for the uncharted series and the first last of us,but the writing and the story here feels underwhelming at best. The characters, who are brilliantly acted, are poorly written. And how they treat joel is not justified at any point throughout the game. The new characters introduced are just not fleshed out.
You don't get to spend too much time with them, which means no emotional connection, which means you really don't care about the stakes.
And the absolute nonsensical decision to let you play as Abby, the girl who kills joel at thr start, just does not make sense.
They tried hard to make you sympathize with this character, but throughout her section, the chances are that you will not develop any sort of connection with her.Thats because,in my opinion, the last of us has always been about Joel and Ellie. Not just random groups of survivors. Most people will not care about this random group of people you are introduced to.They wanna play as Ellie, and progress as her.The whole section of Abby feels like an 11-12 hours of tideous side quests...and don't get me started on the island part. That island section was put there just for political agendas.
Nothing more.Adds nothing to the story, and goes on for far, far,FAR too long. And the game acts like you give one bit of damn about whats going on with these characters.
The ending is one of the most pathetically written endings I have encountered in a video game.So all in all,the story, which was supposed to be the strongest part of this game,is the weakest part of this game.
I really wanted to believe that the hate this game is getting is unnecessary,I really did.
But after playing it myself,I would say it deserves it.

Voice acting is good, but the story sucks and Abby is a very unlikable and unsympathetic character. Joel's death makes no sense when you've played the first game. In the first game Joel runs a guy who is pretending to be sick just because he didn't trust a stranger. But in the second game he just gives his name to a group of strangers who he just met which leads to him getting killed. They try to force you to like Abby and make Ellie look like the bad guy. Example, Anby is shown playing with a dog while Ellie is killing dogs left and right. Abby's crew are also unlikable and uninteresting characters. There is a pregnant woman in Abby's crew that insists on being on the frontlines instead of staying at base to care for her unborn child. She is needlessly putting the health and wellbeing of her unborn child at risk for a reason I'm not sure, I find this to be a very stupid thing to do. Just stay at base until your baby is born. Of course they are totally undernourished and you have to believe that she saved by traveling in the ocean somehow. They killed the franchise with this ending, and one of the worst thing is that it cannot be criticized since if you do it you become homophobic in some way, or they tell you that you did not understand the ending (it must be because it had never happened before that the protagonist realized at the last second that killing would not solve anything lol).

Graphically, the game is phenomenal, the attention to detail is astonishing and the best ND have ever produced. The combat is improved but still quite the same as Part 1. Unfortunately, it does not give you any reason to play it again. It's a story based game which means that having a bad story ruins the gameplay. Graphics etc. can't save that.
The game also has a lot of annoying interactions, buzzles are boring and b4hand praised weapon etc. animations are full and stupid.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel lied to. Everything about this game was a **** lie. Neil Druckman few years back said that The Last of us will not be about anything else but Joel and Ellie because they're the main characters and they wouldn't have it any other way, that was a lie. In the trailers they put Joel in cutsene and then replaced him with Jesse, so we think Ellie is on some kind of revenge path and Joel is helping her with it, that was a lie. Again in trailers they replaced Joel and ellie models to mislead us so that we think what we saw was their new adventures and in fact those were only flashbacks, so it was a lie. Despite all of that they kill Joel in the most horrible way just to introduce another character that this game is indeed all about. From the start I had hard times bringing myself to play it becaouse of the poorly writing but after they forced us to play as Abby this piece of **** charactar who killed our beloved Joel I totally lost it. I was waiting for this part to be over and go back to playing as Ellie but that didn't happen. Even more, you had to play as Abby to kill Ellie ?????? Imagine in Dark Souls you fight against a final boss and the game places you in the body of the boss and you have to kill your player character to finish the game, could you come up with something dumber that that ? I don't think so. It's clear for me that somewhere along the way of writing a script for this game something terrible happened, they totally abandoned their original ideas and tried to write something so WOKE and teach us something trough this game but unforunetaly they completely failed to do that. I say the first game gave us better live lessons and made us think more about some objects. The second didn't have the same effect because the times when i could spent thinking about some problems that this game portrays I spent on thinking when will this **** end. Dissapointed, will never trust this Company ever again and will definetly not buy their games in the future Expand

Character consistency has disappeared, ending is unfulfilling and lacklustre. Same gameplay as before with some additions which is nothing special and will get stale. Beautiful graphics and score with great animation. But all in all a narrative driven game with a weak narrative really isn't that good of a game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The writers don't show nor tell the emotional development of the characters and instead place an impossible burden on the player to fill the gaps to make the story work.

The pacing is atrocious. Right at what the player is lead to believe is the climax, instead of paying off, the game takes a break and forces you to go through the story again from a different character's perspective for 10 hours, before finally it finally resumes telling the story.

TLOU2 touches the themes of grief, forgiveness, revenge and violence, but ultimately goes nowhere and/or fumbles the messaging and ends up contradicting itself.

The character arcs are very weak. Characters seem passive for most of the game, with things happening to them instead of them making choices. When they do make choices, how they change or why they made that choice isn't really expanded upon, leaving it to the imagination of the player.

All in all, a story where stuff happens but nothing really changes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoy playing the game for the first time at least for the first half of the game.

Decisions about Joel's character and his death may be controversial and might be a little bit out of character and not be logical, but I could accept it and they bothered me only a bit. I mean it succeeded making me feel certain emotions as anger sadness and really feel what ellie was going Trough.

Starting of your journey of revenge somehow never felt satisfying though, because Tommy set off in front of you and you were following his path. As you follow the journey and kill some of main-enemies Abbys friends you find yourself being found by her instead and killing Jesse one of your companions. Now the game somehow starts to lose track of its own story and pacing as you now play the past 3 days again out of Abbys perspective. It takes you about 10-15 hours playing her story just realizing in the end it didn't quite add up something to the plot. It somehow felt like you were going on a never ending side-quest. On her journey you should start to sympathize with her or at least understand her character, opinions and choices she made. Well it might worked for some people but for me it quite didn't. I didn't really care about her story as I could already think that she had her reasons killing Joel and that she too has fears, has friend she likes and has a backstory. Speaking of backstory you have some very well written and beautiful flashbacks both from ellie and Abby. They really did something to the player and brought something to the story as making things clear. But the placement of them throughout the story made you completely lose track of what your goals in the present timeline were. As you come back from a flashback it always was like ok where am I? What is happening now? After completing the 3 days from Abbys perspective and fighting ellie in her hideout, which really hurts. If you think of doing your best to try to kill the character you so much love, I understand what ND was trying to achieve but in this case the gameplay it forces you to play is not what you wanted at this moment. After Abby lets you(ellie) and Dina live the story makes a jump to a farmhouse where Dina and you and her baby JJ live a happy life and enjoy what you have got. The relationship is beautiful and in my opinion the game could have ended right there and it would be a quite acceptable game with only a few issues.

But someday Tommy shows up who is kind of disabled Trough the encounter with Abby and makes you feel bad for not finishing the job and killing Abby. Ellie doesn't want to and Dina tells Tommy to leave. Ellie wakes up in the night and out of nowhere makes a 180 and switches to the opinion she has to find Abby and kill her. Playing the rest of the game felt pointless and not necessary as you again hunt down Abby to find her in a bad condition and fighting her. In the fight she bites off 2 of your fingers but you still manage to win the battle. As you are drowning her ellie sees a memory of Joel which leads her to let Abby alive and spare her. At that point I didn't even care anymore about what is happening to Abby. She could be alive or dead and it wouldn't change anything. But to be honest it would be logical to kill her after a minute before she bit off 2 of your fingers and the memory of Joel should give you the last shot to actually killing her cause you can't see him nomore cause of her. She is the reason for his death You get back to the farmhouse to find it abandoned. You try to play the guitar in memory of Joel but you can't cause of your 2 missing fingers. Ellie leaves the house ending up with nothing at all. Which is not fair in my opinion. The story was hell of emotional but had to much stuff going on about new characters that didn't develop throughout the game. Characters hadn't backstorys and nothing that makes them rememberable. Then they get killed in pathetic ways and the game never mentions them ever again as if they didn't exist. It is emotional for sure It looks beautiful for sure The gameplay is good but only a little improved from the first game which wasn't a problem for me at all cause I really like it. The story is what is the gamebreaker here. Characters are not well written and do illogical decisions. It feels all over the place, loses its pacing and feels forced. It's like the developer did this. We have a certain idea. To achieve this idea we force characters to do that and this. When in my opinion it should be like this. The character is in this situation. How would this character react and how would it affect the story and what would be the consequences of his or her reaction. Would be a lot better and would feel much more logical and realistic. You can say so much more but I only got 5000 digits so all in all. Gameplay 8/10
    Grapics 9.5/10
    Story 3/10
    Flawless/glitchless 8/10

Story is most important so its a 4/10 in total

I trusted that if there was ever a developer that could weave some of those weird story choices together into something that made sense, it would be naughty dog. I mean, look at all they've been able to make. Masterpiece after masterpiece. I'm afraid to say it but this time they failed. This game was boring, the story was so weird. The choices that the characters make are just the strangest most out of place choices that feel like the writer wanted because of a story they're pushing instead of what the character would actually choose. Kurt Vonnegut once discribed writing a character and controlling their choices, it feels like you can only control them with stale rubber bands. You can pull them a little, but once you pull too much, the character breaks. It feels like almost all of the characters broke in this story. The writers seemed like they had a story in mind, then just threw characters in to fit certain roles regardless of who that character is.

The graphics are great, the acting is great, gameplay is meh. But without a good story in a game like the last of us, all of those things matter so little. With no story, it all falls apart. This was a very sad realization because it proved to me that even great game developers like Naughty Dog can fail so miserably. I will definitely wait until after reviews to buy the next game they make.

It reeks of a creator who believes their creative vision could have no faults. It's basically George Lucas with the prequels again. The game bandies around interesting ideas but it never truly commits to then and every time I began to feel something for the story, the game would cut to another character and completely take me out of the emotional and thought provoked place. If this were a game franchise less known for story, I could see it gaining the acclaim that games such as MGSV have even with their weakened emphasis on story. This franchise however, is completely reliant on the story and it's emotional effect on you as a player and fails to commit to the ideas it brings up enough to provide a troluly thought provoking experience. Disappointed to say the least, I hate that this game felt like a slog but it did and I can't lie. 4/10.

Who ever said this game was a masterpiece clearly knows nothing about sorry telling and I would unsubscribe now as they either believe their **** doesn't stink, much like the creative director of this game or they are so desperate not to lose access to the games that they lie blatantly.

There's a lot of detail in this game I'm frankly impressed the PS4 can handle it while staying relatively quiet. The audio in the game is also note-worthy. It has plenty of options to tune to your exact setup and sounds brilliant under any of them (assuming you're using the right settings). As does the difficulty settings. Players will be able to choose their exact preferred play through to suit their style. Now let's get onto what's not so great. I will also be ignoring all the "SJW" stuff people are choosing to complain about as I've finished the game and that is frankly not what I find wrong about this game in any sense.

The game starts out, with a really strange vibe to it. It takes a bit of time to settle into itself, but before it can ND thrusts you into a scene which majorly increases the plot pacing. Now, dialogue between characters after this still feels off. The characters aren't giving off any vibes to justify the actions they take against their own word in the slightest, and previous writing of these characters goes out the window a little. After a few hours in the game starts getting interesting as you play as Ellie moving through the world. The refined crafting is nice and the addition of prone is welcome, With the better graphics and animations and how dense ND has packed these environments you can easily get lost exploring when given the opportunity. The engagements have more options than the first one, feel wider and still makes the player think. However. ND clearly goes out of their way to write things in a pace that puts the characters at odds in terms of how interesting their content is. Ellie on one hand, never learns from any of her encounters and the same twists begin to occur. The writers consistently put her and the player in situations that are out of their hands and just forces the player to watch pretty horrible events that would have, in my opinion. Gone down different if Ellie was a similar person she was made out to be in the first game. Her enviroments also change less, during her 2 segments, Ellie is either in one, or the other kind of environment. Where as Abby gets to see more diverse scenery. Then on the other hand, they try their hardest to put Abby in situations that are all nice and loving, and making her look like a good person. However, their reactions to events tell completely different stories. The game seems to punish the player for actions it takes out of their hands and takes away emotional moments from the player at other key times, which further disconnects them from the story. The timing of the story is very off, with constant flashbacks at weird moments or flashbacks that don't entirely add much to the story. From playing 2 perspectives over 3 days and then skipping forward again to play 2 perspectives from a different time in the not so far future.

The game attempts to do a lot that, it frankly doesn't deserve because it hasn't earned that with the player. A lot of these moments where they attempt to pull on the strings of the player seemingly is washed away in comparison to the scene at the start of the game and the player is often left with what is obviously a different than intended reaction. Characters are entirely not likeable, or only slightly likeable. And most likely will be killed off before you even start warming to them or properly getting to understand the relationships that have been built in between the time we've been gone. The game does very little to actually unravel those connections between people to the player. I found moments in the game where I kind of forgot I was playing a Last of Us game and, that to me was not a good thing, I was starting to detach completely and the story wasn't doing much of anything to win me back. Towards the end of the game, I was seriously struggling to force myself to finish it. When I finally did. It felt empty. That ultimately i learned nothing, experienced nothing new and it seemed like how it would feel if your friend tried to do a skid while he was drunk and crashed his car. Does it look spectacular? Of course. Worth anything? Not at all.

The AI is barely a step up if at all however, here and there we see marked improvements but that's probably mostly coming from the couple of new mechanics, including prone and jump for the access to extra verticality where available. The game is an impressive technical feat when it comes to graphics, sound, animation and environmental work. However, the environments are not "big" by todays standards. That's okay, because they're well crafted, thought out and they look gorgeous. But, ultimately. A game comes down to a lot more than how it looks. If nothing but the graphics and audio has improved. And with the story attached to this game, and writing that feels even barely attached to the game. I can only mark it a 3.

Upon writing this review, I have returned my copy of The Last of Us: Part 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Towards the end of the game I found myself just rushing through the different areas on easy mode, because I got bored by the repetitive gameplay a lot and just wanted to finish the story. The search for Tommy, which makes almost half of the game, is packed with boring detours and grinding for material in houses or basements. The game at some points is really bloated and makes you do everything twice, thrice, and so on. The enemy encounters are somehow always the same and differ only very small parts. I found no motivation to make my way through the Scars' or Wolfes' camps like the developers intended to as clearing out those camps was not even necessary to move forward in the story. Sneaking, waiting, attacking, watching a way too long stealth kill cutscene (yes, I know you could shorten it by skilling, but why would I spend my pills on that skill?), looting, crafting, and in the next area I had to do the same. It was just a convenient method to give the player something to do and maybe to hide that there is only little substance with regard to the storytelling. Rushing through without killing anybody remained without consequences, so I kept looking for a purpose of my actions. I found also very very annoying that you almost made it to your point of interest and then - suddenly - you dropped into a river or fell down many floors so that you'd have to go there again, but just another way this time. Killing off the minor characters frequently (Jesse, Yara, Danny, ...) wore off at some point as if Naughty Dog just wanted to highlight how cruel their storytelling can be, but it was rather pointless. And compared to TLOU Part 1 it indeed was in many ways. I always thought that Game of Thrones' Littlefinger was the only character in the world that could beam from point A to B in minutes without context.
Yes, the presentation of the game is phenomenal, but it's something that I take for granted when it comes to an AAA title. In the end it is also very easy to praise the details of the landscape or houses because they somehow looked all the same. There was only little variation. Almost every house had the same cupboards, the same kitchen, the same bathroom, it looked like a copy & past design, which is another aspect that bored me.
As for the story I quickly lost my connection to Ellie and never established one to Abby.
I am also very disappointed by the developers praise that we would have to endure the consequences of Ellies decisions and actions. That's what they said many times in a short 5 minute clip prior to the release of the game. Turned out that this was simple marketing nonsense. The game itself made the decision, I never got to decide anything. And what decisions in life do not cause consequences? Whatever you do, it will have a result. Like developing a boring and repetitive game causes players' frustration.

Lots of random flashbacks, the characters aren't developed properly and the player has no choice whatsoever in the outcome of the game. Everything is scripted. Story weights 4 points for me because it should be the selling point of the game, but it was actually so shallow and dislikeable that i seriously can't find almost anything good in it. Only a couple of characters are actually well written and developed. The rest kinda makes you not even want to finish the game.
Longevity - 0/2 - The single player story is something i'd never want to go through again, and compared to the first game there is no multiplayer. 25 hours at best, at least for me.
Graphics and Audio - 2/2 - Not much to say here. The game is visually stunning.
Gameplay - 1/2 - Basically the same gameplay from the first game, nothing wrong with it, but they could have made it a bit more interesting.

    Total: 4/10
What's funny is that they critics are blaming the low user-score on the players, refusing to acknowledge anything wrong with the actual game. Anyone giving this game a 10/10 is clueless.

There are some bugs here and there, but nothing that compromises the gameplay experience. However, these qualities don't outshine the bads of this game, since The Last of Us is focused on the story and the characters. The story doesn't progress in a natural way, the manipulation of the events by the writer is blatantly obvious. In that sense, the characters are often forced to do things that are out of character or simply incoherent just so the story can be driven to the writer's desired direction. Aside from Ellie, Joel and Tommy, the characters weren't duly explored, which made me think "if they die now, I don't care" a lot. The message about revenge was also poorly conveyed, mainly because, once again, the story feels very artificial. Another bad aspect is the length. 20+ hours is too much for a first play in a game like this. It's unnecessarily dragged where it doesn't need to be. All in all, I wouldn't recommend. Expand

But this game is a complete joke. Sure there are a few good parts in the game (mostly flashbacks to Joel and Ellie tho, I really enjoyed those). It was a cool idea to view things from 2 different angles, I have to give them that, but they did it wrong. What Abby did so early in the game causes no one to have any sympathy for her for the rest of the game, her sad story does not change the opinion we have about her. If only they put that in a different order, maybe it could've worked better.

Character development... well I guess I can see what they were going for? But poorly executed, everything the characters in part 1 stood for was chugged out of the window. We know Ellie and Joel from the first game and we know their stories and where they come from, but they seem so empty in part 2. They are not the same people at all. They ruined the ending as well, I don't even care that Ellie let Abby go, what bothers me the most is that she now lost 2 fingers, which makes her pretty useless for a sequel, if there will ever be one, that is.

Gameplay wise, yah it's pretty nice, I'll give that, felt smooth.
    Graphic wise, very good.

About the whole SJW thing, I really do not care if a character is lesbian, or trans, I really do not care. But it is clear this game is ruined by politics, which makes me sad and angry beyond belief.

I just hope this all turns out to be some kind of **** up dream or something, otherwise I have no hopes for a part 3, because well, Ellie's hand is ruined, no way she can hold a weapon now and I refuse to play as Abby ever again. Hopefully she magically grows those fingers back or something.

I really hate to say this, but I feel like this franchise, which had so damn much potential... is ruined. Well done devs. This game is an absolute joke and an insult to the first game as well as to us, the fans of the original. As if someone beat the game to death with a golf club and spit on it's lifeless body.

The story is ok, but the ending just renders the entire thing a moot point, it's pointless and has no pay off.

The ending should have been Ellie kills Abby and she crawls up to the shore and lays down breathing heavily, with "All Gone (Aftermath)" from the first game playing, and the screen fades to black with one last breath.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I bought this game for Joel and Ellie and both characters were destroyed in part 2. The way Joel died was moronic, Joel from part 1 would never reveal his identity nor follow a bunch of strangers he just met. The fact that he was killed within the first 2 hours of the game and then you’re forced to play as the very person who killed him for 10 hours, without any context or who this person was is just a horrible idea and made me feel sick. Some of Ellie’s actions don’t make much sense either, including the ending. It just seems that writers came up with an idea and wrote a script without considering if the existing characters fit into the story. The new characters that were introduced are impossible to like even though the game wants you to sympathise with them (I’m talking about Abby – she’s a badly written character and when in a second she turned back on WLF and started killing her friends I could believe this!). I did like Dina and Jesse but obviously Jesse as one of very few characters I liked was killed like a dog (same as Joel). Wanted to see more Tommy as well and thought I would get a chance to play as him (instead I got Abby…) but they completely gave up on him as all characters from part 1.

The world looks nice, graphics are great, voice acting too. When it comes to gameplay, NPCs – it’s just slightly better than part one and I was expecting a bit more but did enjoy it in general.

I love part 1 and played it 15 times but part 2 I’m never playing again.

Overall, this game was totally different from the first game, the focus was not in the story but the gameplay and graphics. I would not recommend this game for any fan of the original game. Only if you liked the gameplay more than the story and characters (I don’t know how). Anyway, in conclusion, I will give a 4/10. Great disappointment, for all what they did to the game.

But this game is not just about gameplay ... the story really sucks. There are too many plot holes. You can't understand what happens sometimes. For example when abby beats dina and Ellie the plot moves into the future without explaining how They found a doctor to treat the wounds. (Ellie had a broken arm, dina and Tommy were seriously injured. )Jesse dies like a retarded. Ellie spares abby in the end for no logical reason. This game is against Joel. Joel has been "mistreated" by Ellie. Tommy then after a blow to the head It survives by losing only one eye. ARE WE SERIOUS? Unfortunately the parts that are bad, are just terrible. In the first game, we're shown just how careful Joey is, and by extension, Tommy. There os no excuse for how they ended up in such a scenario. Maybe if Abby had been the one to save them, then they would have more reason to trust them.
I will say that the graphics and gameplay are sublime, in my opinion, but in a story driven game, those can only get you so far. If you're just here for some mindless action, and aren't at all interested in the story, this game could probably be an 8 out of 10, but if like most of us, you wanted story, 4 is the best I can give.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After having seen through the 20-ish hours of the game I am very disappointed by it.

Starting off with the positive points:

+ The soundtrack & audio; Gustavo Santaolalla pulls off another very emotional and fitting accoustic background which often returns with the guitar being played,

+ The graphics; these are absolutely stunning, few games are on par with this and they can really get you into the setting of the game,

Now off to why this game is just a 4 in my own opinion

    - The story; obviously this is where a lot of people nope out at the game, and I completely understand that, for some the sendoff Joel gets is a literal spit in the face (Yes, I mean that scene).
The character of Abby is being forced down your throat making her look like a good girl in comparison to Ellie. The absolute zero care I have towards Abby's friends... Was I supposed to feel something towards them when they died, like sadness and regret? I sure didn't with the exception of Owen who felt somewhat human. A lot of the events and actions that happen are so ridiculously far fetched it removes all parts of feeling somewhat realistic (who sends a pregnant woman out in the field? and don't come saying they got to pull their weight, as she's a trained doctor or medic she could surely take care of people in the WLF homebase without being put in the frontline). The relationship between Dina and Ellie was so angsty and insipid I mean, they are both 19 years olds who have gone through so much, do you really believe they have the time and know how to act like modern day 16 year olds who got into a first relationship.

    - The mechanics; pretty much the same as the last game and not very innovative

All in all a game that has not lived up to it's expectations which was hard from the start compared to the first part but nonetheless did badly.

It's not even the decision and events early on, that are setting events for the entire game (which in itself, is quite dumb considering the reception) but the execution of it. The failed attempt of the second half of the game and the ending make it unbearable, it even ruined the first entry for me, I'll never be able to go back to it. I had a Dawn of Justice flashbacks during the cutscene. The themes explored are presented so bluntly and often, that in the end you're asking yourself what was this game about? It couldn't be that obvious and left unanswered, because the cliched answer can't be it in The Last of Us? Plus there's a serious case of false advertising it, calling it Ellie's story and naming her the protagonist without mentioning anything else is just plain wrong, it's just MGS2 but bad.
Other than that, the game has beautiful world, minor improvements to the combat, better levels than the first entry. I think people praising AI just confuse aggressive AI with good AI, since it's still dumb and enemies will line up for you. The score also deserves praise. It would really be fine if it wasn't a sequel to The Last Of Us, like 6/7 out of 10. And please watch the podcast about Neil, Troy and Ashley talking about it. They have no idea what their game is about.

The Last of Us stands out as one of my favourite games of all time. This is almost entirely because of how expertly crafted the story and characters are. As it is such a story driven game, that was the key to its success. I fell in love with those characters and their bond. The Last Of Us 2 is the literal antithesis of that.

As it is such a story driven game, that was the key to its success. I fell in love with those characters and their bond. The Last Of Us 2 is the literal antithesis of that.

I don't know as I don't follow this sort of information, but, I feel like The Last of Us 2 was written by a separate team of people to the first game? And if I didn't know any better, I'd also assume that the people who wrote this game hated the first game or at the very least hated the people who wrote it? It feels like, ironically, the writers of this game getting revenge on the writers of the first. If you've played the game, I'm sure you'll know what I'm talking about.

I was beside myself with excitement when The Last of Us 2 was first announced, and we've patiently waited to play it for years since then. I avoided spoilers as best I could, even though I heard people were not pleased with what they had seen. But now having experienced the game... I wish it was never made, and that The Last of Us was still just a standalone title. I'm so disappointed.

    The positives are:

+ The graphics. This has got to be the best looking game of this console generation so far. I absolutely adore the way this game looks. Graphically speaking, you can see and almost feel the love and care that has gone into producing this.

+ The world/environment. I wish it wasn't *quite* so linear at times, but the detail and beauty of most of the scenes in this game is, again, probably the best we've seen this console generation.

+ The interaction. Whether character to character, or interacting with the world itself, there is an awesome dynamic feeling to everything. Little things like the brilliant physics of a rope, and layers and layers of other such details give such an amazing feeling of interaction with the game.

+ Sound. Play the game with earphones, honestly, you owe it to yourself. I've experienced sound like this in some PC titles, but never in a console game. A huge step forward in sound for console games. Especially the environmental sounds, which lend massively to the immersion of the game.

    Something I thought was satisfactory.

~ The gameplay. I enjoyed The Last of Us gameplay back in 2013, it felt very good for a game of that time. However, with The Last of Us 2, although it is undeniably better than the first game, it hasn't advanced from 2013 as much as other games have in this regard. The controls, especially for gun fighting do feel somewhat dated. And the puzzle solving hasn't moved on from the first game, it's not particularly interesting to play in terms of that side of things - it's neither bad, nor particularly good.

Now for what I didn't like (read absolutely hated):

    - The story. The Last of Us is a story driven game. One with one of the best stories of all time in a video game, by my reckoning. The Last of Us 2 has an absolutely woeful story, and it isn't even well told either. It's a tired old story about revenge, and it's told to the player by bouncing around, in a really out of order seeming way, between various characters and flashbacks. There were large parts of the game that were massively drawn out, for no reason, as the story payoff at the end was not nearly as important as the amount of play time dedicated to it would dictate. The direction the story takes seems like a spit in the face of anyone who loved the first game for its story and characters, which lets face it, all of us did. I found myself shouting at the screen at some moment, knowing I just watched characters I love take actions that are antithetical to their very nature, if the first game is to mean anything at all. I got angry while playing this, genuinely angry, and not in the way the game is meant to make you feel angry, I don't think.

    - The characters. The Last of Us is a story about Joel and Ellie, and their growing bond. If you like that version of Joel and Ellie, do not purchase this game. The writers of this game apparently don't like those characters, and instead like their own characters who are inserted into the game without any care taken whatsoever to help the player feel any kind of empathy for them. I do not want to play as the character you force me to play as. Most other characters are totally one dimensional and dispensable. The exact opposite of the first game.

    - The ending. Everything you do in the game, everyone who dies, every quest you complete. It's for nothing. The ending is so infuriatingly disappointing, that it was the final nail in the coffin of the idea that I might ever play the game again.

The worst thing about this game, is that knowing it exists actually tarnishes the first game for me. I'm a little scared to play the original game again, now, knowing this is ultimately how things end up. I've never wanted to "un-play" a game so much in my life.

If a lot of this narrative fat was trimmed then the game would be a more enjoyable and concise 8 - 10 hour experience. -All of the main characters are extremely unlikeable. Furthermore, TLOU2 wastes time trying to incur the players empathy for these unlikable and disposable characters.
    -Plot holes abound
-The game forces you to play as characters for which you have little emotional investment. -The gameplay has marginally improved since the first game. However, 7 years have passed since then and there should have been at least some innovation. You won't find any here
-The story comes across as unfocused, padded, unnecessary and lacking in genuine human emotion.

Sure, often the excitement doesn't match reality, but I would have never thought to see such a bad game after the remarkable predecessor.

First of all the few positive aspects about TLOU2:

    +Stunning graphics 10/10

+Solid gameplay 7/10 (while the gameplay is not particular great or groundbreaking, solid gameplay is definitely a good thing to have in a story-driven game)

    +Overall fantastic audio-visual presentation

Unfortunately a game like TLOU lives and dies by its story and not by its graphics or gameplay:

    -Dumb and miserable story

    -Unlikeable characters

-An ending that makes the (already bad) story completely pointless

A well-written story set in an apocalyptic setting should have both highs and lows, because the highs make the lows feel more powerful and vice versa.
The story of TLOU has both love and hate, happiness and sadness, good and evil, fun moments and serious moments, absolute hope and utter despair, the story of TLOU2
only has the latter stirred up with a pointless ending that leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

As a standalone game, TLOU 2 would have simply been a poorly written game, as a sequel to the beloved TLOU this is a punch to the gut for all the fans though.

4/10 is the most objective score I can give this game, from a more subjective perspective it feels more like a 1/10.

I am actually left with only one character from either game that I still like. The first game was awesome, the way the relationship between Joel and Ellie unfolded was masterfully done. Part 2 everything is forced and none of the characters are likable, for god sakes they ruined both Ellie and Tommy. Additional characters are completely horrible people. No matter how they tried Abbie was unredeemable and her roided out physique was completely off putting. My god that sex scene was frightening. Why on earth would they force you to play half the game as this person?

In the first game there was lots of violence but it was to protect people you cared about. Part II is nothing more than a snuff film.

The only reason I gave it a score of 4 vs 0 is the few scenes with Joel and Ellie. I did enjoy when he took her to the museum.

I wish I could give this game a higher rating due to the fact that the graphics, audio, and animation push the envelope well beyond any other game within this genre. Sadly the awkward pacing of this game's story due to flashbacks and character switches removes from the emersion which the previous factors tried so hard to achieve.

I have completed this game as I wanted to give this thing
I wish I could give this game a higher rating due to the fact that the graphics, audio, and animation push the envelope well beyond any other game within this genre. Sadly the awkward pacing of this game's story due to flashbacks and character switches removes from the emersion which the previous factors tried so hard to achieve.

I have completed this game as I wanted to give this thing a chance, so I remained open-minded about the character arc of Abby and pushed through the needless potholes that this game has to offer. Upon completion I can safely say I do not feel that this game pays off in any shape or form, the story seems utterly pointless and disconnected from the characters and world that we came to cherish within the first title. The actions and decisions of Ellie throughout this game lead to nothing and has left me confused about what the message of this game is. The ending could have been resolved by offering the play a multiple choice of either killing or sparing Abby; making for the 10 hours of Abby gameplay mean something.

It is such as shame because this game will influence how I view Naughty Dog in regards to future titles, as I am sure it will be the case for many other gamers. This is a game that doesn't need to be played. This is a game that is not a must-have, unlike its predecessor, The Last of Us Part 1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A huge disappointment!!
The only things I liked about this game are the improvements in the graphics and combat environment. But those things cannot be compare with how the story was ruined!! Joel been killed just in the beginning of the game! The most important character in the franchise and the reason why we loved the game and the father/daughter relationship that dragger many gamers to love the story, and simply Neil destroy all of this because of what?? Getting rid of Joel just to switch the story to a gay propaganda?
What is wrong with you?? and the none sense ending of Ellie forgiven Abby because of a flashback!
Imagine John forgives Maich for a flashback of Arthur Morgan!! Its funny how the flashbacks of Joel are the good thing in this poor game. What a shame man, what a shame.

Amazing gameplay, but the story decisions that were made are awful and a complete betrayal to the characters of the game.

O final é péssimo e descaracterizam muito os personagens, matam um dos personagens mais icônicos do mundo dos games de forma ridícula

I'll keep this review spoiler free. I did my best to avoid as many leaks as possible. Even so, there were gifs and images of unsettling images that spoiled huge plot points in the game. Some even making fun of that gruesome plot point. It was another taste of how willing people on the internet are to be as distasteful as possible. Now, because of those spoilers, leaks, distasteful imagery

Despite the visuals of the game looks absolutely amazing, the characters and story line were convoluted to follow. Was harder for me to keep following to the end.

I've enjoyed playing of this game, but game sometimes is boring - a lot of movies and less of action. I don't like that game shows love between ppl of one gender and no cute girls anymore.
A lot of cruelty in today games.

This game is by no means as bad as some people make it out to be. But neither is it a masterpiece.

The mechanics are ripped out of the new Tomb Raider games with stealth, crafting, melee and gunplay. Though there is a slight addition of watching your trail with dogs that can sniff you out, as well as sound cues from enemies similar to Officer Enemies whistling from Sniper Elite 3/4.

Little innovation compared to the first game, though at least it isn't a game-long escort mission. This meets expectations for game published by a major studio. But that's all. (5/10)

The story, which seems to be the most controversial part, is a massively over-hyped "was it worth it" revenge story. Very unoriginal. And while the quality is not bottom-of-the-barrel as some are inclined to believe, it is unimaginative, and very much average. (5/10)

Graphics-wise, the game looks how one expects a Triple A game to look. Polished, and refined. But that's expected. It does not stand out beyond that. (5/10)

    Base score: (5/10)

    Additional factors:
The social justice angle is something I find meaningless to the story. So what if the main character is straight, gay, bi or otherwise "non-binary?" Did it add anything to the story? No. Does it detract from the story? Also no. The story stands on its own merits, though as I said above, it needs work.

The fact that this game had a "pre-order incentive" that affects gameplay is a major sticking point for me personally. Just for that, -1 from the score.

Finally, Naughty Dog, get over yourself. You and your works are not some gift from on high. You have fallen victim to creator bias. You are unable to see the GLARING flaws in your product, which is understandable, and you are lashing out at anyone who dares suggest that it is less than a masterpiece. A "masterpiece" is defined as "a work of outstanding quality/workmanship." Your studios workmanship is hardly outstanding. It was average for a Triple A studio. And this game (based SOLELY on its own merits) is also average. It is not a masterpiece.
"Outstanding," by the way, is defined as "exceptionally good." Do enlighten us all as to what is "exceptional" about this game in regards to the quality or workmanship, let alone "exceptionally good." And if your response has something to do with the main character being a strong female with non-traditional orientation, let me stop you right there. That has NOTHING to do with the QUALITY or WORKMANSHIP of your game.

Final score: (4/10) due to pre-order scumminess. 5/10 otherwise.

    My rubric:
0/10: Unfinished. I never give credit for unfinished work.
1/10: Alpha. Severely Broken. There was an attempt, but that's all that can be said.
2/10: Beta. Major improvements needed, but at least the game is beyond the conceptual stage.
3/10: Broken. Some work is required to optimize and fix the technical issues.
4/10: Unimpressive. Falls below expectations, but otherwise a functional game.
5/10: Average. On par with other games of its bracket. No more. No less.
6/10: Novel. There are a few aspects that are different from others of its kind.
7/10: Exceptional. Significantly better than the average game.
8/10: Stand-out. Truly innovative mechanics/story, very high quality.
9/10: Masterpiece. Very few flaws. Minimal improvements can be made to this game.
10/10: Perfection. Actually, literally perfect. Zero flaws. Also impossible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, the graphic and game control is excellent...but a horrible setting on the story and character. You could have achieve the same effect by crippling Joel or just make him severely injured and went into coma.
A bad reason to start up a merciless revenge. I mean, did Joel torture his victim before killing them? No he gave them a swift and quick death. You tried to make Abby looks innocent by having a reason to kill Joel. Yes you had a strong and valid reason... But your reason doesn't make any sense to give her any reason to torture somebody to death.

I felt deeply offended on the discrimination part against Jesse. What kind of double standard do you guys have to make such a bad joke

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
