This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a failure of a sequel to the first game. The story is boring and uninspired, the gameplay is almost identical (which I guess is good if you are happy with the same gameplay over again), the characters are unlikeable and never learn anything, the ending is super unsatisfying and nonsensical, the game is full of weird and bad writing, the entire game is specifically formulated to make you feel miserable (which is NOT a rumour, it was officially confirmed by a lot of people who have worked on the game). If you take the game on it's own, it feels like an semi-Indie game with AAA game graphics. The developers are constantly blaming completely false things for the bad reviews, saying "oh, bots are review-brigading the game, it's not real people", or "they only dislike it because Ellie is g@y". Okay, lemme tell you why both of these claims are false. Technically, yes, there are definitely bots AND people review-brigading the game, but lemme tell you something. There are an equal amount of people review-brigading the game to give it a 10/10. There are an equal amount of review-brigadiers on the 10/10 reviews as there are on the 0/10 reviews. The second statement is so dumb that it makes me laugh. The Last Of Us: Left Behind (the DLC for the first game) was very, VERY heavy on Ellie being g@y, and that was rated incredibly high, so that argument is kaput. People hate TLOU2 because it spits on the first game and it's legacy, it is written badly, it isn't original, it isn't new, and it isn't good unless you're purely looking at graphics. I would say if you love TLOU, don't buy this, if you really, REALLY want it, wait for a sale, see if you can score it for super cheap off someone else, or borrow a copy from a friend. Absolutely shameful, Naughty Dog. You've spit on TLOU, it's characters, and the legacy it created. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had high hopes for this game because everything Naughty Dog makes is a masterpiece. This is the exception. The story was awful. I hated Abby from the get-go even before she killed Joel. Hated playing as her. She did have some fun skills/abilities but playing as the person that killed Joel for half the game? Are you kidding me? By the time I started playing as Abby again after she raided the theater I was bored of the game. Only reason I kept playing was because I loved the first game and wanted to find out the ending. Never did I think I would have to play as Abby for another 10-20 hours. This game dragged and dragged while you played as Abby . Only reason I’m not giving this game lower rating is because the combat/gameplay and graphics were amazing. But sadly that’s not enough to make a game a “masterpiece” for me. I realize sequels are very rarely as good or better than the original. But red dead redemption 2 was better than rdr1 imo so I know a great gaming company can do it. I hate to give such a low rating as I consider myself to be a glad half full kind of person but I just didn’t not enjoy anything in this game except the combat and graphics. I don’t totally hate the fact that Joel died for the sake of the story. I get it. Gotta move on or the game would be the same as the last. I can’t think of anything else that would have motivated me more to play this game. But by the end I was relieved I was finally done with this game. The ending was trash. You travel to California to kill Abby to finally avenge Joel and Ellie just lets her go when she’s about to kill her. That’s the only reason I kept playing. So I could kill Abby which was THE WHOLE POINT OF THE GAME. Awful. That’s all I gotta say. Play the game but don’t get your hopes up. I did and was thoroughly disappointed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part ll, such hype for a game that flopped so badly. I think that Naughty Dog forgot that this is story based game. The graphics and game play are excellent. But come on, the trailers are fake. They lead us to believe that our beloved people would be kept safe and instead were not. If anyone out there want's to buy this. Before you play it prepare to be disappointed so Naughty Dogs cant. We the player have to sit back and watch the man who could kill waves of highly trained military soldiers to some friendly low IQ man who acts like he is not in a room full of random people. *Warning* *Spoilers* *Ahead* We have to watch Joel die. Leading Ellie on this revenge mission against his killer, Abby. Through the story we are switched between Ellie and Abby. But they make us try to feel for Abby and make Ellie the bad guy in all of this. Leading to her killing everyone involved in Joel's murder but the person who killed him. Then the dev teams blame the users not liking the game on homophobia. The only person in this game that is LGBT+ is Ellie and we all love Ellie. But then we have these paid off IGN and Critics giving the game 8+ out of 10. It's just crazy. I waited 7 years, to see Joel get killed by a 9 Iron and then get forced to try to sympathize with his killer. Also having to watch a sex scene with Abby. Was just, awkward. Tbh bad game overall, save your money. Thank the saints who leaked this bogus game for us. Expand

This game is just heart breakingly disappointing comparing this to previous Naughty Dog titles and feels like major kick in the face compared to the first game. It lacks all the organic subtlety and beautiful character relationships of the first game. There are so many ham fisted attempts to get players to feel a certain way that they can see it a mile away as shallow and forced.

The lack of different beats through this game made it dull and repetitive. Almost the entire game focuses on showcasing as much gore and how "dark" the game is while flashbacks of happier times appear to add no meaning to the plot.
The writers want you to feel morally gray and think about all the npc's as being people and yet lack the time and effort in humanizing them which leaves you with subpar characters that are one dimensional. Either that or the main characters have drastic mood swings jumping from one morality to another instead of properly building character development and don't appear to reflect real human beings. The game seems to hold itself on a high pedestal for showcasing a diverse ethnic cast with people of various different sexual orientations yet appear to use them as a gimmick or they have no development or they get killed off quickly.
It's just incredibly sad to see how this company appears to have dropped the ball on such a beautiful franchise. I wanted to love this game so badly and I just couldn't when I see them hit every writing mistake you should never do in a story. It just seems like these wasn't enough testing of the game to make sure everything read well and hit the correct target audience.
Note that I also wasn't spoiled by any leaks. I saw this game with fresh eyes and it still made me disappointed. The game is pretty and gameplay is fun which are it's only saving graces.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part 2 was an overall depressing departure from what we came to love in the original. Characters were uninteresting. Gameplay was basically unchanged despite some minor changes. Can not deny the visuals are beautiful. However, nothing will remedy the fact that 10 hours of the game should have been avoided and should be avoided entirely. What was anticipated as a major success, really turned out to be a major bust. If this were a standalone game perhaps it wouldn’t be as bad. Sadly this is a sequel to a much beloved game, that does very little to improve upon it, if not muddy the waters. #sad Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I completed the game in roughly 30 hours on Hard Mode

    Major spoilers.

First off, the game has what we all agree on is good graphics, and similar gameplay with no real improvements from the first game 7 years ago. While the gameplay is still quite fun, it is dragged down by senseless side quest objectives and a garbage story line with terrible characters development. This kicks in when you play as Abby, which is really obnoxious and feels like a chore. I found the Rat King (THICCC BOI) to have better character development and build up than her in every way.

A lot of the sections were interesting, the first open area Seattle environment was interesting, it felt like Metro Exodus in a way, until it becomes more linear with some exploration into safes, supplies, etc. One thing I found really disappointed by was when I was forced to play Abby, which honestly felt at least like 10 hours at least. This wasn’t advertised in anyway at all. Especially after watching her beat a beloved character to death. Just a small taste of my experience with this game, honestly save your money for Ghosts of Tsushima that releases next month. This game is just a miserable experience for the player, and it excels at that. Neil **** tries to subvert expectations but really just proves to be a laughing stock. This game is and will not be GOTY. CyberPunk will stomp out this game.

The author surely had a good vision with his "There is no black and white, just different shade of grey" thing, but even that is nothing new. I would've liked it, but he overshoots the target by far. I had the feeling he got totally lost in his vision and forgot, what made part 1 good. Since this is a Story Game, I focus on the Story the most while writing this review and thats simply not good... Amazing graphics with no real innovations to the gameplay, but that’s passable for “if something isn’t broken, don’t fix it”.

The story however is a jumbled pile of vomit that’s been spewed out of Neil Druckmann’s mouth. TLOU 2 has no regards for what that the first game had built upon. Character development is thrown out the window and is replaced with characters that no one gives a shot

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game breaks my heart for all the wrong reasons. A 7 year wait for the sequel to on of the greatest video games ever made all for naughty dog to screw it up. I adored the last of us but part 2 is a terrible game. the gameplay is fun and the graphics look great but that's as far as the praise goes for this game. within the very beginning of the game Joel who is widely considered along with the likes of Lee Everett as some of the greatest father figures in gaming is killed. this was expected however the way they did it was terrible. having a man who once ran over someone he didn't trust within seconds of meeting them get tricked by someone and ultimately getting beaten to death in the most undignified way is so poor from the writing team. however i'm not as torn over this as the majority of the last of us fans as i was constantly focused on getting revenge and killing Abby. I truly hated Abby but as i was playing i was conscious of this and accepted this was naughty dogs way of setting her up to die at the hands of Ellie but this is where the game went from decent to absolutely horrible. the first half of the game sends you out on a revenge quest and when you finally get to the end time rewinds and you have to do everything you just did with Ellie in Abby's shoes up until the final confrontation. this is one of the worst decisions ive ever witnessed from a game. making you spend half the total play time playing as one of the most hated characters in video game history is dreadful. after getting back to the final confrontation between Abby and Ellie maybe just maybe if after all of this Ellie got the revenge she spent the whole game getting then I could leave somewhat satisfied but no. after the entire game is spent based around a revenge plot you never even kill Abby which absolutely baffles me. this game is truly awful from a story and writing point of view and it really seems like an entirely different studio produced this disgrace of a sequel to such a monumental game. However this is last of us.. The game is purely selling for its story, and this is where things go south.
Characters that we love act completely out of character, Every so often you ll hear stuff about love, kissing ,Fing and doing other stuff. You know its true when the Crash Bandicoot Easter egg is a porn tape. This is the post apocalyptic world and everyone cares about having sex.
New Characters re added just for story convenience. Jessie's role was to leave Ellie's, girlfriend (Dina) pregnant to raise the bar and then get shotgun to the face. nothing else. Dina is just there to replace Joel in Ellie's adventure but their chemistry is just not here, and the only thing she does, is to keep saying Ellie she loves her and become an obstacle when she reveals she carry a baby. Owen is there as the good guy who prevents his team from killing Ellie early in the game, then reveal to Abby that he got another one pregnant to create this love's triangle its own problem and then get shot by Ellie.
Lily/Lev once again has no purpose in the game other than showing that his 'clan' kicked him out for shaving his head and acting like a boy, they tried to create this (Joel Ellie relationship) with these 2 where Abby protects Lev BUT its too late cause we the player Hate Abby for the mistreat of Joel and cannot accept her as the new Joel.

Joel the protagonist of the 1st game gets killed after 1:30 hour of playing the game to set the goal for Ellie. Joel's death was expected BUT i believe no-one expected him to act so out of character just for plot convenience , especially when you have 2 Ellie flashbacks where you see him act like he used to. (museum scene and). Even Tommy who was with him acted so out of character.
Last but not least we have Ellie, She loses her father figure early in the series, then she goes on this quest for revenge she kills and tortures people to get to her goal and when she does, she rescues Abby fights her, win and let her go. Its worth mentioning how the game had a time skip where we see Ellie and Dina having their own house with their baby and Ellie decides leave and go kill Abby after a long time has passed since their 2nd face off . She lost all of that to get her revenge just to stop. If i wanted a story with great power comes great responsibility Vibe i would have gone to Insomniacs Spider-man . It feels like going up mount Olympus to get water just to realize i left my bucket down to Athens.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a little late at this point but I want to air my view since I cannot contain my frustration and disappointment at this point.
I just got done with this game and I am left with a complete and utter feeling of disgust and a hole being shot in my gut.

Before I descend into my rant, I just want to commend what went right: The Graphics, The Game Mechanics and the Voice Acting.

    Now...

The story telling and writing is in shambles. Most of the supporting characters are shallow and cringe which makes these inter-personal relationships seem superficial in that they only serve to make the cogs of the story work just for convenience sake.

This game tries so hard to be a set apart from the first, that it completely breaks itself.

If TLOU2 was a completely stand alone game with no ties to the prequel it still falls flat in that it betrays the player by making Abby the antagonist become utterly and completely hated within the first 2 hours of game play.

So everyone is now on board with Ellie's revenge drive, great!
    Lines are drawn:
    Ellie = Good and
    Abby = Bad

You play your way through and are fed this revenge plot and battle your way through various traumatic events and come to a climax.
But instead of exacting your well deserves revenge you are then FORCED to play Ellie's antagonist and empathise with your enemy, which completely railroads you into developing a hate/but I have to play through this relationship with Abby.

You are betrayed for placing all your empathy and feelings with Ellie when you play as Abby.

At this point no sane and sound of mind person would feel comfortable with this change up.

    Moving on...

You start to develop feelings through your game play with Abby for her situation and start to understand why she did what she did.

***Great I get you Abby! Let me play as Ellie now***

Unfortunately, the worst part of the betrayal is that you are FORCED again to fight Ellie, which is uncomfortable and you don't really want to do it. Which sane person would feel comfortable and want to actually have a hand in destruction of the protagonist and be okay with it?

    Going forward...

The ending... I don't get the thought process in the decisions made, they are uncharacteristic and are completely unsupported.

Why did Ellie let Abby go when she flashed back to Joel?
    - Did she think Joel wouldn't want her to do it?
    - She literally gave up her family to keep the promise to Tommy and to ease her own mind (part of the explanation she gave Dina), so why stop?
    - She had nothing left to lose except to get her long awaited revenge.
    - It certainly couldn't be that she didn't want to take a life because she has a laundry list of people she's already take out in her path for revenge.

It makes no sense in Ellie's perspective, the decision is uncharacteristic.

But if you think about it this way:
** The creator now has 2 loved characters
** You as the player, as much as you don't want to admit it, have mixed feelings for both characters in the end and you might second guess yourself when you try to choose between them.
** It isn't like Ellie knows what Abby has been through..... BUT you as the player do know! Which, however you phrase it, places you in a position where you start second guessing who you're going to root for.
** So the decision was made for you by the creator, a shallow flashback was the reason to stop Ellie ending Abby.
** So it's not your decision ** They creator spared both his characters ** You are then left with no resolution and feeling frustrated ** You were railroaded and none of the things you did in the game actually mattered ** Lead through an emotionally charged story with no resolution But the game sure is pretty though.

I was looking forward a story with positive meaning ... but this is a story of losers. You learn that revenge is not the answer but it never was! Abby is infact the character I hate the most. She ruined everything for revenge and she knows It because she kept loosing people due to it!

I just feel very frustrated after playing it ... you do not want to see your heros defeated and also playing as the one ruins everything is something I don’t understand.

When I play as Abby the only good thing is that I can keep killing my self. It is a pity... it is graphically outstanding... nothing more.

Walking through stores and seeing models and textures that were specifically made for that one location that you'd visit for 5 minutes. I've spent most of my time playing just zooming in and being awe struck by the details. They do what Naughty Dog does best, and makes it feel like more than a video game. You can tell that the amount of work (and money) poured into this game sets it apart from anything else you'll play.

The game shines in so many places, but it lacks in so many others. The dialogue is unbelievable , sometimes bordering on laughable. Characters we grew to know and love, turned into caricatures of themselves. The "scene" that starts you on your revenge mission didnt make me feel heartbreak, sadness, or anger, it made me feel cheated. It was just an excuse to propel the story forward, a story that at its heart is generic and lacking compared to the first. The dichotomy between Joel and Ellie was the heart of the first game. Seeing their relationship grow as they struggled forward on their mission is what made it one of my favorite video games of all time.

This game and this world are brutal and unforgiving in many ways. I found it hard to continue playing. In the first game you had a compelling story that made you want to see it to its end. Not to mention you had two interesting characters that were together for most of the game. Hearing Joel and Ellies conversations back and forth broke up the oppressive feeling of the world. In this game I didnt care about the dialogue, nor did i care about the characters. They felt token, they didnt feel like real people with real struggles to relate to. This game definitely suffers from being too long for its own good.

The gameplay is more of the same, with some minor improvements. I Enjoyed getting back into it , but after a few hours found myself dreading the combat sections again and again. Honestly the best parts of the game were just walking and discovering the environment and environmental story telling.

The thing i disliked most was the political messaging. I play video games to escape from the insanity of modern day politics and social media. Not only is it front and center here, but its forced down your throat. In the first game, Ellie turning out to be gay felt natural, it felt like it was organic and just a part of who she was. In this game they dont spend more than an hour reminding you of her sexual orientation or of those around her, through cutscenes, dialoge, and your notebook. It consumes her identity now, instead of just being a part of her.

Im really conflicted about this game, probably because the first was one of my favorites, but I felt let down. I need to give it two separate ratings. As a game, given the detail, the voice acting, animation, and over all polish, i would give it a very solid 8. As a sequel to the original? I give it a 5. You take away the polish and detail that Sony's open pockets give you, and this game is a generic let down masquerading as art.

First off I want to express that this game is not terrible, it’s bad but not terrible. The graphics are great and the visuals are amazing which is why I gave it a four, but that’s not all that goes into a game of this caliber. By all means I am not a professional critic and have no experience but excuse my language but a depressed clown with a stick in its ass is more entertaining than most of this game. I say most because the prologue was in my opinion beautiful when Joel sings and give Ellie the guitar, I geared up a bit. Then they did a stupid time jump to speed the process of Joel’s idiotic death. This game is so repetitive with the way it’s played and goes way off the rails of the first game which is loved by most people who played it. If the game stuck to the character developing moments like the Future Days cover by Joel to Ellie then I would rate this a 10/10 and writing this I am hopeful that the retcon this game or makes Joel Edition where he doesn’t die and does work on the relationship of Ellie and Joel. They are making a TV show as well for this game which I am really excited but I just don’t want them to mess this up like TLOU2 and cast the right actors for these roles( I personally would choose Hugh Jackman and Kaitlyn Denver’s) Thank you for reading this if you did:)

The trailers produced led everyone to believe certain characters would be in the game at certain stages and this was never the case. I understand how marketing works but this may have tricked thousands. Overall I would have to give it a 4, characters from the first game completely doing things which they would have never done in the first game and many other things. The story has left me wanting more and it’s simply not good enough. Like many others I waited over 7 years for this, just to be truly let down. Hurt would be the best way to describe this feeling. Terrible story and abysmal writing.

So as a linear, story driven game, it fails on the most important points...
It's a shame because the overall game mechanics are great, and there is a good attention to detail.

It's sad to see all the 10/10 reviews. Since when does your gender or sexuality make you an interesting character.
It is simply inclusion for the sake of inclusion.

Playing the first game was incredible and in my mind one the best experiences I’ve had playing a game. This game took that and destroyed everything the last one built just to add some shock value. But not only is it a terrible sequel by (literally) spitting on everything established in the first game in order to form its own narrative, but is a plothole-ridden mess that’s subversive for the sake of subversiveness and has a hypocritical message that leaves you with nothing more than an ultimately unsatisfying ending. I’d even be fine with Abby if she was actually a great and well-written character, but she’s not. I don’t hate her because of a certain thing she does at the beginning of the game, but because the game tries so hard to force you to care for her despite being an an irredeemable psychopath who makes idiotic decisions and literally gets euphoria from killing people. Joel wasn’t the most likable character out there, I’ll admit, but I could at least still sympathize and empathize with him due to what he’s lost. Abby on the other hand is nothing more than a selfish brat who’s backstory is only partially explored in flashbacks and nothing more. To put the cherry atop the inedible ice cream, you play as her for half the game, and so you’re stuck with this character you just want nothing to do with for a good portion of its 25-hour runtime. So since since it’s a story-based game and the story is awful, I can’t give it anything above a 4/10. As a huge fan of the first game and one that has it as one of my all-time favorite games, disappointment can’t even begin to describe what I feel right now. I honestly just wish Naughty Dog didn’t make a sequel in the first place, especially since TLOU didn’t even really need one, and this along with their workplace crunch and misleading marketing of the game have definitely put me off of purchasing any of their products in the future. Like many players here I write this review with much disappointment in my heart. I wish I could give a 10 out of 10 score like so many "pro" media did. But that just isn't how I feel about the game. I truly loved the first TLOU. I am no game designer nor a writer but I think there are many much better ways to continue this saga. In my opinion, Naughty Dog has failed tremendously. YouTuber Skill Up made the prefect comparison pf TLOU2 to Game of Thrones season 8. It's the same level of betrayal and disappointment I feel as a fan.

The technical side of the game is where it shines. I love its visual, graphics, voice acting, music, motion capture, all top-notch work, even next-gen. It's the only reason it still scored a 4 for me. But its storytelling failed spectacularly. The first 10 to 15 hours of gameplay was fun, then it became so repetitive and predictable. All you need was the knife actually to beat the game. The gameplay became mind-numbingly dull, it became something I had to endure just to see the horrible story progress.

Midway through the game, players are forced to play as Abby. A character I was led to despise for her brutal killing of Joel. I hated it. It's such a low-ball emotional manipulation effort I felt I was forced to accept. I hated every blow I delivered to Ellie. The worst part was the grand finale ending. The story just doesn't make any fxxking sense. It felt like emotional cheap shots with no real purpose.

I rarely write reviews, but I feel like Naughty Dog needs to hear this. They've made a horrible game that I waited for 7 years but did not want to waste my time to finish. So I ended up watching YouTube videos just to see how the story ended. I was glad I didn't invest the time to play to the end. I wish I could get a refund on my time and money.

Loved the first game, intact it was my favourite game of the PS3 era. Been looking forward to this for years and when it got delayed a months ago was bitterly disappointed., but nowhere near as disappointed as I am now after playing this horror show!

The way that Joel has been sacrificed in this game is criminal, you don't even get to play as him. Barely 2 hours into the game he get killed off it the most ridiculous way possible by a character you then have to take the role of. Abby isn't even a likable character.

This killing is equivalent of having Obi Wan killed off by Jar Jar Binks in star wars, or Marty Mcfly Beaten to death by biff in Back to the future, it just doesn't make sense!

The only redeeming for this game is th that graphically it is outstanding, but that really is its onky saving grace

Now, for those not interested in the story, yes the graphics in part 2 are amazing no doubt, the sound is awesome,UI works well and everything from a technical perspective is well polished, but it is the story that made the first part an epic example of solid storytelling in gaming history. The same characters from the first game, which were previously so well realized and developed, are written and thrown away so poorly here that it is an absolute slap in the face to the most hardcore fans. The graphics and gameplay, while certainly competent and at times truly breathtaking are mostly undermined by just how incompetent the story is presented and told. The game truly became an endurance test of annoyance to play through, as I was forced to continue through scenarios which I quickly lost interest in, and didn't care about said characters the game was trying so desperately hard to get me to sympathize with.

I was originally debating on giving this game a balanced score of a 5 but the ridiculous self indulgent, supposedly profound ending the writers have decided to incorporate here, falls flat on it's face and sealed my final score to a 4.

On a slight side note - Marketing for this game has completely mislead and flat out lied to people and it is absolutely baffling to me that major video game reporting outlets (that have given this game a masterpiece rating) have refused to even point that out, when they have done so with other games they themselves have reviewed. Trailers were deliberately altered to give the illusion that characters play a larger role than they actually do. A major character was purposefully hidden for...whatever reason. Writers came forward and stated that you wouldn't be forced to kill dogs, (this could be only a minor spoiler) this was completely untrue! And finally, certain characters were made to look older when in reality, in the final product they were actually younger as it was taken from the perspective of flashbacks. Ridiculous! Manipulative and shady marketing at it's absolute peak!

Do not buy this game if you were a huge fan of the first. These developers do not deserve your money if this is the level of storytelling they had to show after 7 years of waiting! A sequel never should have happened! I wish I had never played it! I'm heartbroken. I keep expecting to wake up and this game to be a bad dream, but it isn't and now I don't want to speak of it ever again!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I created an account just to write this review. I’m a big fan of the original and other naughty dog games. Since the release date I’ve followed a lot of the discussion with this game and I decided to play the game myself before I rushed with any judgement. The best that I can say is that the gameplay, graphics, acting, and soundtrack are at the very least an 8/10 but the writing in this just so bad. It’s disappointing to say the least. In my opinion, the main reason why The Last of Us is considered one of the greatest games of all time is cause of its story. Cause of the bond between Joel and Ellie. While it was certainly an awesome game just to play and look at, the beautiful yet tragic story was what set it apart from other games at the time. And this sequel diminishes all of what made the original great. Here are my issues with just the story/writing. SPOILERS HERE: I understand, from a narrative standpoint, the decision to kill Joel. While it was not the only approach they could have taken, it could have made for a great storyline if done correctly. Maybe have him and Ellie go on a few more adventures and bond more, then Ellie somehow learns the truth, they split, then Joel dies saving her, then she forgives him. Anything really. Instead Joel is killed in the opening act by Abby (who I’m sure we all know by now) with a golf club. He went out in such a disdainful way that completely disregards all of the attachment we have made towards him and by extension Ellie. By some random character that we saw in one trailer. It all just felt so forced to me. Like the writers were more worried about having an edgy story rather than a GOOD story. It seems like they sacrificed what made the first game great in order to tell a message. SPOILERS END

I could go on but there’s honestly too much to write. To anybody that cares about the previous games story, there’s a good chance you won’t be happy with this one. While gameplay wise it is everything you want in a sequel, the horrendous story is just too bad in my opinion. 4/10

The problem is that you don’t get to care about the new characters, you don’t empathise with anyone but Ellie... this is SO not the level of deep character creation I remember from the first game, where you would actually feel for others not just Joel and Ellie. The ending is just... disappointing.
Don’t get me wrong: there were great things as well, they were just so few compared to other less “generous” moments of storytelling.

The gameplay has improved incredibly since the first game though: the combat is outstanding and the game is so very enjoyable to play. If I could forget about the story, that the game just doesn’t deliver, than I would totally rate TLOU Part II a solid 9/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, where to begin. The Last of Us was a breathtaking game. Storytelling was done masterfully. I still tear up whenever I see Sarah's scene.
That game managed to get you so attached to characters to the point of it being the downfall of the sequel.

TLOU2 greatly improves the gameplay mechanics of the first game, albeit the mechanics aren't that great to begin with.
It's still very polished and highly enjoyable at first.
It gets stale very very quickly, unfortunately, but that's not too much of an issue, because TLOU was never about gameplay.

Environments and music are out of this world. Hats off to all the people involved. They did an astounding job and every set piece was a beauty to behold.

Unfortunately, all of what I mentioned is overshadowed greatly. These were all overshadowed by abysmal writing and storytelling.
I did not mind Joel dying. That was expected.
The how is questionable but what are you gonna do..

This story feels incoherent. Dismantled. Trying so hard to break the shackles of a cliche revenge story, it ends up shooting itself in the foot.
I did not care for Abby or her friends. I really didn't. Naughty Dog got us attached to Joel and Ellie, knowing well that they're flawed. Knowing well they're not the best of people. We loved them anyway. Trying to show us how bad they are doesn't work. It's a post-apocalyptic world where every man is for himself.
We cared about their relationship, not Abby's and her new friends. Playing her angered me beyond belief and letting her walk free without being given any choice made me feel like I wasted so much time. The game is hollow.
The characters are hollow and their choices don't make sense.
It's like the characters were made to fit the narrative they wanted and not the other way around.
I expected a big portion of the game to talk about "the cure" which is what made the first game what it is, but there was nothing.
Only a very brief mention in a damn flashback that brushes off the whole thing as minor story point.
I personally believe that finding a cure should've been the main focus of the game, with the revenge story being a subplot of many.
Unfortunately, we can't change what has been done. Naughty Dog failed to deliver a good story. They tried a bit too hard and stumbled on their own ego.

    Finally,
    Graphics 10/10
    Gameplay 6/10

    Graphics are amazing.
Has been pointed out by many, no need to talk about this anymore.
The voice over acting is very good.
Music is nice, but some more fitting 'mood music', while fighting through the different areas,
    would have been even nicer.

The gameplay is not that much different to TLOU.
Some minor improvements, but nothing spectacular.
Feels familiar and I can't say it really bothers me that much.

    Now, the story.
If you look at the game as a pretty lengthy DLC, the story is actually ok.
A tale of revenge and its consequences.
The moral being delivered might not suit everyone, but there has been worse.

The problem is though, there is no game that preceded this DLC.

Imagine TLOU2 being about Joel and Ellie diving deeper into the questions that actual matter in this universe. Being it a potential cure, the 'actual' origin and events of this apocalypse or anything else that actually had a major impact on the universe.
What if there are more people like Ellie? It would put the actions of the known characters in a different light.
After the game would have dealt with those things, this DLC could have been a nice fit to wrap things up.

But this is not what the players got.
What we got was a vehicle to transport a message.
Which again, might be fitting for a DLC.

The whole experience feels artificially stretched.
You can tell what type of enemies will be around the next corner or fence.
You fought the infected in the previous section? Time to frag some humans now.
    Rinse and repeat.
Cut out the repetitions, and you end up with a 10 hour DLC.

    The experience just felt shallow.

Flashbacks can be a nice way to provide additional insight on a character's motivation.
Here, they feel like an excuse for not being able to deliver a immerse game in the first place.
You go back and forth and it feels irrelevant.
There's no bonding with characters, no matter how many flashbacks you go through.
Flashbacks may add some additional insight in other games, here, they provide the only insight and it feels hollow.

Would players be able to bond with Abby?
Would players be able to understand how the death of her dad turned her into the person she's portrayed as?
    I'd say, yes, absolutely!

But you don't get the chance to do so.
The time spent playing Abby is wasted by rescuing people you care even less about.
People that have no actual impact on the rest of the story or the character development.
The latter was probably the intention, but the game never manages to pull this off.

The devs and all the work they put into the technical aspects of the game would have deserved a much better story. I would be disappointed (to say the least) as, for example, an environmental artist, that my excellent work is being held hostage by this story. The story and character development made TLOU great for many players. The impressive technical accomplishments, by that time, were the cherry on top. TLOU2 delivers on the cherry part, but the cake is just awfully undercooked.

The characters have no charm or a personality. They are there to basically demonize Ellie and Joel and try to make you feel bad for killing the ones responsible for his murder except for Abby. Ellie sacrifices so much, got a lot of people killed, destroys her body, damns her soul. All for nothing just to let her live and return to an empty home with nothing to show for it. The only two character I found interesting were Lev and Yara. Lev being trans and wanting to be a warrior and not some house wife, and his sister Yara who would never abandon her brother. The visuals and gameplay are really good. The action set pieces when you're running away from a horde of enemies or a chase on foot are gaming highlights. The melee has a savage feel to it, Every fight is a brutal duel to the death all the character fight dirty. gouge out eyes, smash their heads into walls bite off fingers. In conclusion the story leaves much to be desired and will piss off a lot of fans but the gameplay and visuals are enjoyable. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great graphics. Nice modest upgrade to weapons, skills, and upgrades. My biggest issue is the story. I’m not mad Joel gets killed. It’s how he gets killed. And then, having to play 10-12 hours which is basically the entire second half of the game as Abby. At that point in time nothing that was shared in “her” story, contributed to me feeling any sort of compassion. To me, this is genuinely the biggest reason why fans of this franchise had a hard time accepting this story. Plenty of other ways to kill a main character/hero. This is not the way Neil. I’m sorry. First, no one gives a crap about the new playable character, okay?? We waited years to play as Joel & Ellie, not some unlikable new character we don't even care about. The fact that we are forced to play as this character for the majority of this game is unacceptable! I'm pretty sure the chapters you play as the new protagonist are way longer than Ellie's. What's the point of printing Ellie's face on the game cover, or make a 12 inch Ellie statue for the collector's edition if she has less screen time than this new crappy protagonist? (Yes, sadly I bought the collector's edition because I thought this would be as good as the previous game) Secondly, what's the point of introducing a bunch of new side characters when you're just going to kill them off in cutscenes before any actual character development? I'm going give this a score of 4 because the voice acting, soundtrack, combat system, art design/graphics are as good as the previous game. The story however ruined it for me. I probably won't be pre-ordering part 3 if there's ever going to be a sequel. I might reconsider if they actually hire competent writer who can actually write a decent story. I'm not even asking for a good story, that's how disgusted I am with part 2's story. Well done part 2 writer(s). You just ruined one of the greatest video games I've ever played. This game is just like it's ending: completely pointless/waste of time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yes this would be my first review and I’m not a bot. I was a huge last of us fan when the game came out. The fist game had a great set up for a sequel unfortunately this wasn’t the case for this game. I’ll first start off with all positives of the game you can’t say that the game has a terrible visual and scenery. This game right now has the best scenery and graphics on the PS4. The attention to detail is extraordinary. The gameplay is also solid as they kept the same mechanics from the 1st game and more of visual affect, such as when you can see your character upgrading your weapons. Now to the story where game takes a turn and the thing the last of us revolves on. The theme of this game is revenge and it’s represented well, but the story takes a turn. You play as the new character named Abby a muscular blonde woman. She wants to get revenge on Joel since he killed her father who was apart of Ellie’s operation in the End of the first game. Abby in the early part of the game ambushed Joel and Tommy after helping her out. I don’t agree on how they approach his death in such a horrific way by Abby going to town on his with a club. Yes Joel has done some horrible things as we know for the first game for his own well being. But as we were playing Joel we didn’t care that he did dose things since we wanted Joel to go threw dose things. The next part the game is you are playing as Ellie and trying to find were Abby is and trying to kill her for half of the game. Then for the next 10 hours you play as Abby and I guess the dev thought that we going to sympathize with Abby by giving us flash back to her life but I never really do. As you play as Abby you meet lev and her sister and trying to get medical supplies to amputate her arm. But as was playing I didn’t understand why are doing and what was the point of the goal. At the very end Ellie try’s to get revenge on Abby after falling the first time. Abby is strung up a poll skinny and weak, finnaly there is a last battle with Ellie and Abby where Ellie has the upper hand and nearly drowns Abby but doesn’t go threw with it. This made mad since there was no point of doing this if not going threw with it I was and as many gamers where finally happy to see that we were going to reconciliation for the actions of what Abby did but we don’t. The devs are trying to make us do decisions that we don’t to do and puts in political points to make us follow. This game was a gem and now it’s Cheaks Expand

The amount of effort that went into this game leaves you in awe with every detail and character animation looking spotless as its truly the most beautiful game out there. With that being said the story feels like such a disservice to the animating and acting teams as it has ruined not only the second game in the series, but the first as well. The player is left feeling hollow inside as their taken through a story that only hurts and fails to develop characters in a meaningful way. This story successful developed only two characters in my mind: Yara and Lev. Their story was the only one that made the pain feel justified but at the cost of ruining the stories of so many more. characters will die and your taken away from their story and told to care about someone else's leaving that characters death irrelevant. The game will make players feel angry, sad, empty and then in the end, nothing. The game never redeems itself and ends shamelessly. Overall the game is a waste and i wish better for all those that have bought the game already and those that worked so hard just for their efforts to be ruined by a few terrible directors. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful game. Fantastic graphics, music and voice acting. HOWEVER
The story was NOT good. The pacing was all over the place and a lot of the time situations and emotions felt awkward and forced. For example, there is repetitive focus on pregnant ladies (one of which was heavily pregnant and would not have been able to do half of the stuff they were doing). Once or twice would have been fine, but they put three separate cases into the story to try to force emotion.
There was also way too much focus on the new protagonist of Abby. I understand why the creators wanted us to sympathise with her, but after a main character's death was shoehorned in for shock value, I had no care for her or her colleagues. I would maybe have cut down the gameplay with her to 4 hours as it just became dull and repetitive when I was already lacking an incentive to care about her side of the story.
By the end of the game I just felt empty and disappointed. Not in the lack of resolution but in the way they had taken what had been so fantastic about the original game- the characterisation and narrative- and completely forgotten all about it. I found it extremely hard to finish the game.

All the visual, sound artists, etc. at Naughty Dog can be proud of themselves. Gameplay wise it is almost identical to the first game with some nice improvements, however it can get a tad repetitive.

Now for the Story where the biggest criticism lies. It starts of OK but then quickly deep dives with a stupid and absolutely coincidental character death for the sake of shock factor that will now drive a plot that goes absolutely nowhere while trying to deliver that 'revenge is bad' message just to completely fail at that too.

And while your depiction of the story can be up for debate and whether your desired outcome was achieved, the matter of the fact is that Sony and their marketing team have completely mislead players as they didn't show or allow any gameplay from the second half of the game where it straight up false off a cliff.

In short they make you play as a completely unlikable character and attempt to make you empathize with them in cheap ways that just don't work. It could have been done were the story was written by someone more capable.

In all the biggest reason to play this game is a failure and there is no replay value to be found here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After playing through the entire game, and watching a full play through, I have come to write my honest review of this game. The Last of us was a legendary game. It still is today. The Last of us Part II, in my opinion, doesn’t really live up to the first game. The gameplay, most of the story, graphics, cutscenes, fighting animations, and overall the pace of the game was good. I enjoyed the music too. Excellent soundtrack. The parts of the game that are what really got me to give this rating are only a couple, but also very key things. First of all, the ending was horrible. It wasn’t bad, it was just so sad. I feel like the game just dragged on and didn’t do any justice in the end. It was a terribly sad ending. Ellie suffered so much throughout the game. In the end, she couldn’t even play the guitar. She never killed Abby. Which literally was the point of the game, or so the story made it seem that way, and it never happened. Secondly, playing as Abby. I hated that. After watching Joel die a horrible death at her hand, I was upset. Like literally upset. As if I had an argument with someone I hated, and I lost. Playing as her after that scene was just a punch in the gut. Also, the first fight between her and Ellie, where we beat Ellie up, was just not fun at all. Knowing what Abby did just made it so much harder emotionally. Another thing about Abby as well, going back and forth between her and Ellie messed the time lines up for me. At the end of the game there wasn’t an indication it had been a while and that Ellie got to Abby after Abby had been worked to the bone for a while. It was just like bam here she is a while later. The ending was so bad. Even writing this review I’m thinking of how sad and awful it was. Come on Naughtydog. I don’t even wanna see a part 3 now if it’s coming. One thing I did wanna touch on is the lesbian relationship that Ellie and Dina share. I think that’s really interesting and I liked it. It was a nice twist to the game and I am perfectly fine with lesbian characters. Who really cares. I mean they raised a cute baby. It was cool to see the family aspect. In a way, the game shows us that even after something as bad as a zombie apocalypse, there’s still love of all kinds. It was a good touch in my opinion. Not needed, but good. But overall, I rate this game a 4 out of 10. While there are more positives than negatives listed in this review, in my mind, those 2 negatives outweigh the positives. They really brought the game down for me. I almost put the game down when I played as Abby. That was the main problem for me. Like what Last of us fan wants to play as the murderer of Joel. What person wants to play a character who murders there favorite character in any other video game. Not many people. You could argue it was important to see Abby’s side of things, and yes that’s a valid argument. But I still don’t care enough to want to play as her. Anyway, the game wasn’t the worst. I’m glad it came out. It was an emotional rollercoaster for sure. Expand

    This game has sadly failed.

    Hi everyone,

Just to make a little disclaimer, writing this test hurts me in my flesh. I wouldn’t be able to express the ways the first game, it’s world, it’s characters, it’s story and it’s music ( good lord, it’s music ) touched and influenced me.

I feel like saying this is unnecessary but due to the controversy about bad faith downvotes this game gets I guess I have to do it.

To establish this right away, from a technical point of view, this game is a MASTERPIECE. Regarding all the working methods controversy the development had, what the developers achieved here brings them to the top of the industry. Hats off to them.

Now, WHY has this game failed to me?

It would be tempting to say that the game actually “failed me”, that the game is simply not what I wanted, but I wouldn’t agree, and like to prove it in 2 points:

    * During these 7 years, I imagined everything that could possibly happen to our beloved characters, and mostly when Druckmann and Baker started warning us by saying “ This will be a divisive story “ or “ Don’t expect to relive the first game “, my body was ready. In fact, every key plot of the game was expected.

1- Remember the first 2016 trailer? Everyone was guessing that the Joel asking if Ellie was “really gonna go through with this” was a reminiscent image coming to Ellie’s mind.

2- When later on it was revealed that the game was gonna be about the cycle of hate and PERSPECTIVE, we pretty much foresaw that we would be brought to requestion our beliefs by putting ourselves in the shoes of Ellie’s wrongdoers.

Now, HOW has the game failed to me?

Actually, it concerns these exact two points.

1- Joel’s death: Now, I won’t go to the extremes of thinking they meant to disrespect him with the crazy theories of the Druckmann looking guy spitting on him.

I understand that this death HAD to be brutal in order to put us in a grieving storm to put us in a raging hate towards the killers, but how this death has been brought up simply ruins the effect and just keeps us wondering why it had to happen LIKE THAT rather than why did it have to happen to Joel?

I can’t accept it. How the hell does this vicious and clever smuggler had to get ambushed surrounded by armed nobodies while he’s randomly in the middle of them scratching his ass? And please don’t tell me “ well, he got soft with these years of peace. “, this argument wouldn’t have any backup for that and even Druckmann hinted the opposite by saying that a place like Jackson needs “ killers like Joel”.

2- Now once again I have to point out that to the really end of the game, I was all in for it. The totally absurd conditions of Joel death were thrown in the back of my head, and I kept going on.

As said earlier, I knew that I was gonna be brought to live Abby’s side of the story, and knowing that the game was meant to blur the lines of who is the good and the bad of this story, the game had a critical duty to create the empathy necessary to bring us to that uncertain point of the final battle

And unfortunately, although I had sympathy for Abby, I was nowhere near getting a dilemma at the end, since the characters didn't have much susbtance beside their function: One is a worried son, another is pregnant and hates Abby, Abby is a " garbage" although nothing comes backing this up ( unlike Joel who knew for the first game's ambush because .. ).

The worst part is that they even made Ellie so distant and bleak that at the ending battle, I wasn't wondering on which side I was, but I just knew that I hated Ellie AND Abby.

We are left with nothing in the end. A dark game so badly written that it seems that it's just for the sake of being dark.

    Heartbreaking.

I would also like to point out that this is a legit review and my honest opinion. I'm a huge fan of the first game. Some people are giving this game a bad review because they think it is overly politic - that is complete BS. The game has no politic agenda at all. If you somehow have a problem with that the game contains characters like muscular women or LGBTQ people that exist in our society - you seriously need to change your backwards mentality.

My problem with the game (and many others as well) is not political, it's the storytelling and character development. Early in the game, an event happens that forces Ellie to go to Seattle on a quest for revenge. The plot is nothing spectacular per se, but it could’ve still been interesting for character development nonetheless. Following Ellie on her quest for revenge is in the beginning mostly enjoyable, but eventually leads to a point where you no longer can understand her actions and even start questioning how they make sense. About halfway through the game, there is a sudden change of perspective, essentially one big side mission that is there to provide the player a better understanding of the context and the characters that have been introduced with the sequel. One of the primary reasons for this sequence is to let players develop empathy for some of the main characters that this new story involves. This simply does not work. At all. At this point in the story, most of these characters have so far been completely despicable without showing any redeeming qualities, and there is little interest nor motivation to see any of the reasons that lie behind this behavior. The explanations we are given fail to justify the actions and the way these explanations are delivered is just so poor and unsatisfying that it came to a point where I no longer wanted to finish it. There are even moments during this part where I put down the controller because I didn’t want to push the button prompts and see what happened next. Hoping it would pay off in the end, I kept playing, but I never got to a point where I felt compassion or truly understood the actions that were made by some characters. The story desperately tries to create empathy for them, but the reasons behind their actions and the “redemption arcs” they go through just leave zero impact on you when you already know what they’ve done. Maybe it would’ve been more impactful if they instead had focused on introducing the backstory of characters before certain important events took place. But I think it essentially boils down to the small amount of backstory we get, and how this small amount is somehow supposed to justify their questionable decisions. While many of Ellie’s decisions definitely are questionable as well, I still can’t help but feel compassion for her. After all, I grew up with her in the first game. The new characters haven’t had this development, and from the start they leave me feeling disconnected. While there are some interesting moments during this later half of the game, for the most part it is just a drag that you want to get through as fast as possible to see if it will pay off. Unfortunately it never does, as the ending at least for me was incredibly unsatisfactory.

Overall, the game has you for the most part either feeling miserable or angry. It is extremely violent, to the point that it just becomes unnecessary and too much. While there are a few moments that are truly uplifting, they are indeed few. In the beginning I actually felt emotionally moved by many of the events that occurred in the game. But it came to a point where I just stopped caring and even started laughing. While a story of constant misery does seem plausible in a post-apocalyptic world, it also inevitably leaves you feeling void and dissatisfied. This is something that the first game managed to deal with so well – there were both moments of tears but also moments of joy and more importantly, hope. This game extinguished any hope that was created from the first one, and leaves you with only hopelessness.

Lastly, I will mention that the game really succeeds at creating an atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic world. Environments are absolutely stunning and the soundtrack is beautiful. It is easily one of the most visually impressive games out there today. Gameplay is very similar to the first one, it has a few minor improvements but is far from innovative. At least to me, the gameplay was never the biggest strength of this series, the storytelling was. But the story in this game is a letdown and completely butchers everything that I fell in love with in the first game while immensely failing at introducing and explaining any of the new characters. All in all, if you loved the first game – I’m sad to say you’re probably better off just pretending this game never existed.

I’m not mad Joel died, well I am but I wouldn’t give a bad review for that. I’m mad that they decided that not killing Abby was ok! Joel was like a dad to me when I played the last of us so me as Ellie wanted to see her die! I didn’t want to play as Abby but again that’s not affecting my score it’s straight up the ending. Joel deserves better and naughty dog should at least acknowledge that Expand

The game focuses more on how to look good politically, with a disorganised story. I personally enjoyed the flashbacks with Joel, more than i did the rest of the game. The characters in game do not talk that much as theirs a clear lack of in game chemistry and character development. The Game doesn't feel like a part 2 of a legendary game. Im not even upset about Joels death, its the fact that it happened in the beginning of the game, and i dont mind the ending, its the constant drag of events and playing as a character(Abby) im told not too like in the beginning of the game. However, one thing i did like about Abby was her chemistry with Lev alot more than i did Dina and Ellie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a terrible story, I can see why people like it for the gameplay though. The Abbey sections are cringy and the part where you have to do a plot twist is just dumb.

The ending is just a disappointment, no payoff, no actual conclusion, very little is said by Ellie or anyone else.

Naughty Dog intentionally made Abby appear good natured because she pets dogs and plays fetch with them, while Ellie is force to appear evil by forcing you the player to kill a dog, even though they said you wouldn't have to in an dev interview.

The gameplay is just alright, its a lot of repetitive gameplay and not worth bothering actually fighting the NPCs, its easier to sneak up and back stab them, which gets boring the 300th time you've done it before.

    I give this game a "avoid-and-watch-on-youtube out of 100"

This game **** on the relationship of Joel and ellie, joel gets killed in the first 2 hours and then we play as abby the one who killed him for 10 hours and naughty dog expects us to sympathize with her i'm sorrg but i can't force myself to like her. The leaks were worse than i thought the ending is **** cause ellie just lets abby live. But there are a few good moments in the game especially the flashbacks i loved the flashbacks and idk why the writing here is so bad because neil wrote this and the first one. That's my opinion people can have their own opinion and if you liked the game then good for you. Me personally i just do not like this game and to me last of us ended on the first one. Expand

Gameplay and visuals are amazing but the story goes in a direction that Naughty Dog seems to believe in quite strongly but is at odds with what players and fans of the first game wanted.

They managed to make one of the best games of all time when the original debuted in 2013 by crafting a unique world, stunning storytelling and fun gameplay. This game takes everything great about it’s predecessor and spits in it’s face. I can’t believe I’m writing this about the sequel to one of my favorite games of all time.

About 75% of the time playing this game I felt disgusted, hollow and remorseful. There is one section of this game that will make you smile and realize what made the original so great. Don’t hold your breath, it fizzles out quickly.

Every progressive attempt at diversity and inclusion comes off as pandering and insincere. It’s the run of the mill propaganda that has been being shoved down our throats for the past 2 decades. If I could, I would’ve skipped this entirely and kept intact the perfect story that was the original. The graphics are stellar, as well as the music. The gameplay remains fun but a bit repetitive and clunky. All of this is drowned out by the atrocity of a story and a meaningless ending.

If i have to compare the writing of the first game to this it would go from brilliant to braindead. Characters do things that don't make sense making dumb irritating decisions.
The character Abby (the **** that kills Joel) that we suppose to give a **** about is developed very poorly and in result the fact that we have to play as her makes it very painful for the player in a narrative standpoint.
I feel shame for all those hard working Naughty Dog employees that had to put up with Druckman's sjw bull**** propaganda. The game thanks to their hard efforts looks beautiful making it the best looking game on the PS4, the sound design also excellent.
If the game had a decent and competent story like the first one i would probably love it.

Ignore the plot and play it just from a gameplay perspective and it's actually pretty good.

Combat, while not terrible, hasn't added much over 7 years since the first game. Most of the game you can crouch around enemies and do the same takedown knife animation. Gunplay could've used a upgrade, which it didn't get.

Music was nice and I had no complaints over this Level design is beautiful at times, bland and uninspiring at others. Open world areas are full and lifeless in a bad

Graphics are mostly top notch, just like the first. No complaints here. Just, beautiful.

Story is absolute crap. And for a story based narrative game this is a huge turn off. Many characters are boring or outright cringe. Many, like Abby, are out right abominations. Playing the the story in the order it even is in makes little sence. Maybe having character backstory before deaths could've helped here. Absolute trash fire story plot and narrative direction As a HUGE fan of the first this game was a personal attack towards me. 4/10 only because the other points. Story is a 0/10.

The only reason I’m giving this a game a 4 and not a 0 because the gameplay is solid, the graphics are amazing, and the first half of the story was great. I know a lot people did not like what happened to Joel situation but to me he crossed a lot people and he had it coming. Which goes to my second point, the second half of the game forces you to play someone else to sympathize with this person and tries to justify her actions in the beginning of the game. But I didn’t need 10 freaking hours to explain to me what Joel did was wrong. In the end of the first game I knew Joel went too far and I could not side with him whatsoever. It was a waste of mine and everyone else’s time and could’ve been use for another plot. She could’ve grabbed some of our her group and had a war with Ellie’s group, anything would be a lot more interesting than playing her. One last thing, they really try to push this politically correct garbage into the game. The first game dlc did a great job exploring Ellie’s sexuality, friendship, and everything else. The moron who wrote this game was trying way too hard to get a thumbs up from the pc crowd. Do yourself a favor and wait for this game to be on sale Expand

And gameplay is just a beefed up version of the first game and now the bad. This games story is honestly one of the worst sequels of all time they turn geole in to a **** plot device abby is made out to be the protagonist and we are made to feel sorry for her. But we only have motivation to hate her she is a ruthless and sadistic character. She has no reason to be liked and viewed as a hero of the story when she is clearly the villain . not to mention the copious amounts of sences from trailers that are completely different in the game basiclly scaming people who wanted to see hella and Ellie do there **** . over all this games story is a absolute train wreck and not the good kind. There are also other great details i missed but as a Gamer going into the last of us part 2, my main concern is the Story. This is were the game disappoints big time. Both Ellie and Abby make choices in the game that are very out of character, whilst other character are just evolved for plots sake, this really repels you from the game. This was the complete opposite during the first game.

In summary, if you want a masterpiece replay the first game, cause this is surely is not one.

The first chunk of the game seems to be leading to a story that we expect from Naughty Dogs, however, after the first major plot development the story tanks. Most of the characters especially Abby who are introduced have so much time wasted on them, but I never grew to care no matter how hard I tried. They were attempting to craft a story about the consequences of revenge, but it lacked any sort of interesting points, It could be summarized by two words "revenge bad" basically it was a cliche that ruined the experience. Of course, the game looked beautiful and the gameplay was interesting. They developed and expanded well on the systems set up in the first game. Without the crap story and writing, but rather a story of the caliber expected of the series, This game could have been a 10/10. But again the story was such a letdown and it drags the rest of the game with it. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
