This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was a good game to watch overall since it doesn't have any replay value. I have seen worse movies so the plot is not the worst either. The gameplay loop loses its novelty very fast after you learn to recognize all the animations. The graphics seem to be the only real improvement here. All in all I can't recommend anyone buying this game, it didn't make me want to play it because there is nothing I can do in there my way. Expand

Not particularly innovative, not particularly engaging, often deeply tedious. Persevered in all hope until chapter 10 before I just couldn't find the motivation to keep going and in all those hours I can count the time I actually had a little fun with the gameplay in minutes and on one hand.

Have the distinct impression that Naughty Dog was too busy buying into their own hype to pull off an enjoyable, enduring product. This whole thing was like ND charging gamers for an epic event but really just they put us in a room, made us watch them j*** o** and are now somehow gobsmacked that we didn't want to be there, didn't enjoy the experience and aren't as super-stoked to stay on and clean up after them as they were sure we would be.

A good idea, poorly executed. Everything else was just a slightly tarted up Uncharted 4 - which would be a better option to play as it least it comes with some sort of sense of achievement which, I feel, is why gamers game instead of just going to the movies.

No intention of continuing until the end, would return unfinished if I could get my money refunded. Save your cash and your time, both would be better spent elsewhere.

The game was advertised as Ellie and Joel. This is what a lot of people wanted and expected, but it wasn't what we got after 7 years of waiting. It wasn't even really about Ellie when all is said and done.

The story was a "two sides of the same coin" comparison between two people, one of which no one really cares about. It wasn't written intelligently, but in the most "edgy" way a story could go... and there's a reason people don't write stories like this. The amount of plot holes that were embedded in the "redemption" arc for half the game can't be ignored and there were a lot of moments that confused me as to how they thought this writing would work.

There were a lot of great things about the game. The environments looked amazing and carried great atmosphere. The lighting, the greenery and the torn cityscapes were super cool. The core gameplay was very similar to the first with a small handful of new additions. After 7 years I would have expected a little more out of the gameplay, but at least they stayed true to SOMETHING from the game everyone loved while improving it a bit. The music was really amazing and I think the guitar sections were a really enjoyable little distraction. There are segments of the story that featured the Ellie & Joel dynamic, with a focus on playing as Ellie, which were hands down the best part of the game because it was what I expected the whole game to be. They were done excellently and made the ending that much more bitter. The new side characters that interact with Ellie were also pretty cool, but weren't used enough as Ellie's playable game time is too short to draw any connection with them. That being said, this is a story driven game, and they so willfully disgraced the first game and what we wanted that I can't give it anything better than what I rated it. Doing something for the sake of subverting expectations is a horrible idea, especially when the success and hype of something was dedicated to those expectations.

In the end I'm just mostly disappointed I didn't get to play the game I was advertised since Joel & Ellie had such an interesting and developed dynamic. They could have done something so interesting, but went for what they thought wouldn't be obvious. I expected them to do what they did because it was the easiest way to agitate your emotions and I really expected more from their storytelling. You'll really start to catch onto the story beats pretty quickly when you realize how they're telling it.

If this game was made after fans were "pressuring" (the money and demand was there, no pressure needed) ND to make a sequel after they said they wouldn't, I would never expect them to pull what they did. It completely alienates the people who loved the first game by taking the game in such a different direction. TLOU2 was possible because of what the first game did, and they acted like it was an entirely new IP where they just used the characters and story from the last game as cheap emotional tricks. The game didn't leave me satisfied in any way by the end of it and I'm really wishing I didn't play it because it just left a bad taste in my mouth and spat on what I loved about the first game.

If you want something cathartic, don't play this. If you want to be sad, go for it.

The story was a massive downgrade from the first game and having to play as Abby for like 12 hours was significantly less fun then playing as Ellie. When the first Seattle Day 3 ends the game takes such a dive. The combat however was really good throughout the game. The ending was a cop out as well. It is a vicious circle, the game focuses on the death of the doctor who Joel killed. But what about the death row that all the characters you play with leave behind them? It was wrong that they falsely advertised Joel being in the game during Ellie's revenge quest. I get what they were trying to do with the story itself. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and as a woman, I must say that this game so obviously intended to push a political agenda that only succeeded in leaving me with a sour taste in my mouth and an emptiness in my soul. The first Last of Us was a masterpiece. You bond with Joel, a broken man who makes the hard decisions in this apocalypse, which are oftentimes selfish in nature. You then get to watch as he slowly opens his heart to Ellie, a young girl who represents the last hope for humanity and who obviously values life. You witness their worlds collide and how they shape one another to achieve that dynamic duo that we as fans adored and held dear to our hearts. By the end of the game, you question Joel's actions, and although saving Ellie was selfish, it made sense. The world had already taken his biological daughter away from him, so he took the world's last hope away in return. It was a brutal conclusion, but it was satisfying because it was so relatable. He had come to love Ellie as his own daughter, so it made sense that he would do everything in his power to keep her by his side. The Last of Us Part II fails on all accounts in achieving this level of storytelling.

As far as graphics, sound, and all the mechanical pieces- yes, Part II surpasses the first game, because of just how visually stunning it is. It truly is a beautiful game, but that is where my praise ends. Story-wise, I can't even begin to explain all of the issues in this text box. The game tries to demonize Joel, and it is done in such a way that it is honestly laughable and a slap in the face to all fans who had adored the father-daughter bond that had developed in the first game. We recognize that he was never a hero, but everything he did in the end was out of love for Ellie. Which does not make him a good man necessarily, but it made him RELATABLE. Their bond made the Last of Us what it was, and that bond is erased entirely within the first two hours of Part II gameplay in the most violent, disgusting and demeaning way possible. We all expected Joel to die in this game, but the way that it was done was so disrespectful to the entire fanbase that the creators should not be shocked at this backlash. He was a survivor with two decades worth of experience, and he just allows himself to be surrounded in an unknown location? The man who spotted an ambush a mile away and hit a hunter with his truck? The man who refused to give his name upon first meeting Sam and Henry just says, "Hi, I'm Joel" to strangers? This death scene was done purely for shock value and out of laziness. And then they have the audacity to even spit on his corpse. Not only that, but then we are forced to play as the woman (Abby), who had bashed his skull in, for 10+ hours of the game. A section that uses the most basic of psychological tactics to manipulate you to try and sympathize with her to understand her perspective, and it fails- miserably. The entire game tries to paint Abby as this saint who was wronged by the evil Joel, and then tries to twist Ellie's character to make her as unlikeable as possible. You pet puppies with Abby, and then kill dogs with Ellie. You save children with Abby, and kill pregnant women with Ellie. It's so obvious what the creators were trying to pull and it does not work.

Abby gets her revenge by killing Joel, yet she gets a happy ending by running away to an island with her newfound little brother. Ellie ends the cycle of revenge by sparing Abby, but has lost everything and her fear from the first game has come to fruition. She is all alone. Joel is dead, her friends are dead, Tommy hates her, Jackson is against her, Dina (her love interest) abandons her with the baby, and on top of it all- Abby bit off her fingers, so she can't even play guitar. The last connection she has to Joel. The whole "revenge is bad" and "look, violence gets you nowhere" is being preached at every corner and the message does not succeed because our little girl is left with nothing in the end even though she was the one to "forgive".

Either way, it honestly makes NO sense for Ellie's character to spare Abby at the last minute. She cut down hundreds of people to get to the woman who took away the man who cared for her, only to back out because "oh yeah, forgiveness is better"? No. This is not profound. This is infuriating, and exhausting. This game is exhausting. Everything that made the first game superb is stripped away in Part II and it shows. It has turned into a game solely about inclusivity, representation, and a questionable form of women empowerment where all the men die- which leads to the raw nature of the apocalyptic world formed in the first game to morph into a political classroom with infected popping in every now and then. If they were going to do it, they should have at least been clever about it and integrated it into a beautiful story and not in this dumpster fire that attempts to evoke depression in every individual exposed to it.

The story itself essentially prevents that experience from happening, Ellie's characterisation is gloom and depressing and very rarely is there any ability to have a fun experience or a humorous one. I feel the first game really captivated the audience because of the humour and the dynamics and the character developments. This game simply has none of that, it's all stripped away to leave you playing something that is violent and seeking to place your sense of morality under a microscope. I ask myself why? Considering I'm playing a game that is in an apocalyptic world where morality really has no place. Violence in itself is used as survival I dont understand why the writer has to make it more than that. The decision to make the plot more diverse I feel is good. However I think it's poorly written and in doing so stands at the forefront of the plot instead of taking a symbolic place in the background leaving the audience to reflect about later and develop their own opinions on those characters representing strong muscly women ,trans people and homosexuality. I just feel if you put social justice at the foreground of the plot to distract from how terrible of a story the game actually has, it really does do a disservice for the minorities represented and the message they want to express. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've never written a review for a game on Metacritic before, but I feel compelled to do so for this game. This game is obviously Naughtydog's magnum opus and I'm a fan of Naughtydog. I think they have made great, great games. TLOU part 1 was among my favorite games ever -- especially the factions MP. Of course, I was excited about this game when it was announced. I had heard of the leaks and eventually was curious to see what all the fuss was about -- because people were making a FUSS. I found a reddit thread that purported to describe what happened in the game. I read it. After reading it, I thought two things. The first was that it seemed too implausible. I hadn't seen any gameplay footage or pictures, I just had this reddit thread to go by. The second thing I thought was that even if the core of the leaks were true, I didn't worry because I knew Naughtydog would make this a great game. I brushed it off. Now here's my review of TLOU Part II. Off the bat, it was great to see Joel. You immediatley notice how beautiful the game is. Bravo. The animation of the horse riding seemed a bit clunky (at least in the beginning) but nothing to fret about. The game takes its time to develop the story, which, for fans of the series, is not a problem. You're glad to see everyone you loved from the first game show up. The new characters were a welcome addition -- but this is where I have to add the caveat that is, at this point, highly unoriginal, perhaps often overhyped, but nonetheless crucial. There is one character that, despite having spent hours playing as her, I did not care about. Let me digress by telling you that I've completed the game in 3 days of owning it. It came out last Friday, and it has been officially a week at which I am now writing this review. So I sat on it. And thought about. And thought about it some more. And my conclusion is that, while Naughtydog definitely tried something highly ambitious and different, the game ultimately collapses under its own weight. I say this hesitantly. The game was fun. The gameplay mechanics combined with beautiful graphics really made for an enjoyable experience. The boss fights were some of the most fun of any game. But I have to be realistic here. Those who purchased this game are majoratively coming directly as fans of the FIRST game. Why? The story. The gameplay is, for the most part, the same. Everyone expected updated graphics. The story is what brought people in droves to this game. So what happened there? Well... I'm not sure. I had seen interviews with the game director and other people working on the game and I can't help but feel like I was mislead, if only by a small bit. The first trailer surely made it seem like Joel was going to be okay. But towards the release, I expected him to die. Again, Naughtydog can't mess this up right? Then comes *that* scene. And..... oh, wow. I was speechless. My girlfriend who was sitting next to me watching me play, who knows almost nothing about the first game other than a brief synopsis I told her, was almost equally horrified. It was an absolutely terrible thing to watch. I told her the amount time you spend as that character in the first game and, although he made a terribly selfish and stupid decision, you grew to love him because of how much he loved Ellie. And that death .... that was worse than anything I saw in Game of Thrones. That's saying quite a lot compared to what they did to Robb Stark and Theon Grayjoy in that series. Joel's death was absolutely horrendous. I couldn't get it out of my mind throughout the entire playthrough and even after it. Given this extreme impact, when the game forced me to play 12 hours as his killer, I was so disengaged with Abby's character that after some time, I just wanted to fly through it to get to the end. Ellie's part in Santa Barbara probably contained the most fun encounters in the entire game, so my engagement was revived at this point. It was challenging and forced me to use Ellie's abilities to the utmost. And then there's the ending, which..... was ok. It was just ok. It wasn't impactful. It didn't hit me with some wise "lesson" that I think the developers were trying to hit me with. It was just.... gray. Bland. Tasteless. Even days after I completed the story, I'm still unsure how to feel about it. So at this point, I don't this taste the ending left in my mouth is going to wash away and I may be looking for something more significant when there isn't one there. The endpoint is that I'm ultimately dissapointed with how it all turned out as a complete product. And there was no MP, which again, was insanely fun in the first game. Oh well. This is as honest a review I could have given. I obviously don't care about the sexuality or gender expression of any of the characters, which I know was a cause for some to negatively review the game. That's a very dumb reason to give a game a bad review. It was how the story felt like it dedin't even have wings to spread. Expand

This is a message, Critics have a responsibility on what they influence audiences on buying, the game per se, isn't as political as radicals paint it, yes, it has the most suspiciously diverse cast and rhetorics that i have ever seen in a videogame, but it does not subtract from the game as a whole, the agenda isn't in the game itself, but in the media covering it, when did games stopped being a space for creativity and art, to become a medium for propaganda and publicity? I give this game a 4/10 for what it represents, a detriment to the game it tried to improve on, but to whole industry as well. Let’s be honest though - we waited for this game with the highest expectations because the first was amazing and riveting and heartfelt and passionate and brave - and ultimately, about building family without blood, and love without condition. And through the initial story we learn to appreciate the little things of beauty in this messed up world... In huge contrast to The Last of Us 2 - the story made me feel bad playing it. I was absolutely miserable in the second half of the game and frankly I stopped right after Ellie set off for her final show down. I ended up just watching the spoilers, because that’s how upsetting it was to have come this far not knowing who the hell I was controlling anymore.

#NotMYEllie And on top of it all, Joel... my hero, the hero. The humanity. All of it crushed in by a buff chick I have no sympathy for... They may as well have forced me to club him to death at the beginning with my own square button - and I should have known right then, that I was not going to find any fun, any hope nor any consolation in finishing this game after buying it.

Absolutely baddddd story telling. The only thing that made this game worth 4 stars rather than less, was the gameplay itself, the guitar functions and the flashbacks of Joel and Ellie, especially on her birthday. Otherwise, this game is smack in the face to its faithful fans and followers. How dare you? You should have just made the Last of Us, the LAST game in this story period - if this was all you could come up with. This is not what we wanted. Next time just ask us...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am truly disappointed. I really wanted to give the game a chance even after hearing about the leaks but the story is a failure.
It feels like the main goal of the game is to undo everything that happens in TLOU 1. They completely butchered Ellie and Joel. All of that for nothing....

Joel death is meaningless. It is just here so the main story can start, and this is lame. An apocalypse veteran who is trusting a group of unknown people ? Is it really the same guy who was able to cross all the country to bring Ellie to the fireflies ?
But you know what? Even after that, i said to myself, i'll bite. His death can't be for nothing. We can still get something good out of it. A good story, a good ending.

I have never been so wrong. The part with Ellie was correct. She is my favorite character so i have this going for me. But then, i have to play Abby ??? A character almost everyone hated after 2hours in game, and for 10 hours ??? And on top of that, the game forces me to BEAT ELLIE UP ????? No no no. This is where i draw the line. This is just a total disrespect to the fans. I am forced to play a character i hate and hurt the character i love.

All of that for a revenge that doesn't even happen. Yes, ND even rob us from this satisfaction.

I get the point that playing Abby's story was supposed to make us sorry for her. It just doesn't work...

In the end, Joel is dead , Ellie is alone, and on the other hand Abby gets her revenge and her good ending. Imagine the feelings going through this story after coming out of TLOU1.

I still want to salute the game visuals, the sound and the actors who are really flawless. But thats unfortunately not enough to make up for this poor story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics and character design are amazing. Gameplay was good but after a while it felt monotonous. I liked there was a new kind of infected. Also loved the inclusivity. Now, I think getting rid of the main character as literal garbage in the second hour of gameplay is a really bad idea. We looked up for joel in the first game as our father and it's death wasn't commemorative as we hoped it would. I don't think having a 10 hour gameplay as his killer is good, it felt forceful and disgusting. Is like if nothing ever happened. Literally abby never felt remorseful, she is a psychopath and a killer and no matter how many kids she saved, the player always has in mind what introduced the character. When I knew.a 10 hour abby was going to happen, I immediately didn't want to play anymore,. Now, the ending didn't resolve anything, allie completely destroys her life for nothing and Abby didn't get to pay. I don't think if joel was in her place he would have let abby live.. Also, the relationship between Ellie and Dina was cute, but it was forced. I think in a game you should explore deeper connections,. Weed and sex are definitely not deep at all.. I expected so much more. Expand

visually it was great, but story was horrible. it seemed like it Joel and Ellie were not the same caricatures from the first game... maybe that's what they were trying to do, but it didn't relate well and i almost didn't like them. i played TLOU multiple times, but im fine with only playing this game once. try again next time...

Ultimately I really wanted to like this game but despite enjoying the gameplay which while outdated is still pretty good overall and only really begins to drag about half way through, I have to find myself agreeing with a lot of people on the story. Put simply the story did not satisfy me at all, watching Joel be killed in such a brutal manner even though he had done horrible things was pretty terrible in my opinion and overall going all the way through the game only to have Ellie spare Abby is pure garbage. Naughty Dog should have at least made the player choose whether to kill or spare her but instead the whole game feels empty for me after Ellie sparing her. I just despise that Ellie goes through so much and sacrifices so much and doesn't even kill the one person who actually killed Joel despite cutting people down like **** weeds for the whole story. TLDR a good solid 7.5 out of 10 which is dragged down to a 4 for me because of how disappointed I was by the end of it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This one hurt...a lot.
This is without a doubt most beautiful looking failed game I have ever played. Everything that made the first installment great was systematically and pointlessly destroyed by this game in order to justify a ridiculously sub-par message of "revenge is bad" in comparison to the rich and morally nuanced story of TLOU1. The story falls flat, none of the new characters have any sort of personalities or meaningfulness to them (they just seem bland and uninteresting) and then almost all of them die.
The seeming climax of Ellie's character arc and potential resolution of the game as we know it (up until that point) is cheaply held as collateral in the gamers mind as they are forced to replay the same past 3 days except this time as Abby (the games poorly developed excuse of a co-lead that nd kept secret from the public) who happens to have killed Joel in a brutal way within the first few hours of the game. ironically enough throughout the 10 plus hours spent playing as her, she is never humanized and developed enough to the point where we can meaningfully empathize with her motivations to kill Joel or even who she is (due to exceptionally poor pacing and even poorer writing which failed to address anything of character-significance about her)
To me, it is completely fine if nd wants to kill Joel, I don't personally agree with that decision however there are ways it can be done in an effort that makes his death meaningful by the games own designs. What I cannot accept however, is that for half of the game that should rightly have been Ellies, we are made to play as an actual pyschopath. This is due to the fact that nd failed to show any sort of emotional impact that all of the senseless killings had on Abby throughout her time cruelly made as the lead. Conversely Ellie took the emotional brunt of everything and was intentionally and cheaply used as the emotional punching bag of the game.
The ending was laughable in that Joel's death was shown to still have such a traumatizing impact on Ellie after all these years to the point where she feels justified enough to walk away from the life she has, travel thousands of miles to track Abby down, and then in the throes of trying to kill each other for the second time in a revenge fueled duel to the death, Ellie is suddenly reminded of a coincidental and cheaply placed memory she has of Joel (which happens to be their last conversation, yet another slap in the face compared to the writing in TLOU) which causes her to forgive Abby, despite the fact it was the entire theme of the game to embark on a ill-realized and rushed revenge plot where violence is ruthless and nonsensical.
Instead of writing a paced out dramatic and emotional story, naughty dog has decided to manipulate and trick their audiences to come to their forced conclusion of how violence is a drawn out cycle (which this game never truly resolves). This game is an insult to character development, character motivations, and general story writing. Save your money.

The story on the other hand is very poorly written, the Abby started at the most tense moment and every hour that passed it took me away from the main Ellie revenge story and started focusing on little things that didn't feel relevant to the general plot. All the characters suddenly die and it just feels like a Game of Thrones episode when you can't really connect with anyone because you know that no one really matters at the end.

Also i didn't understood how Dina discovered her pregnancy and lost the ability to walk but the Abby side pregnant lady had a full baby inside and all just agreed to send her on a mission that made her die

Naughty Dog clearly stated Ellie would be the only playable character (link omitted):

Naughty Dog stated players wouldn’t be forced to kill dogs (spoiler: you are forced in unskippable Quick Time Events) (link omitted)

And the trailer... with Joel saying he wouldn’t let Ellie do this on her own? Just another lie.

This my friends, is called FALSE ADVERTISING. Stores are denying refunds, but there is a petition with 30k signatures requesting Naughty Dog to change the story of ‘The Last of Us II’ to something that resembles what we were promised.

    Obviously, that won’t happen.

But, it may send a message that Druckmann’s toxicity and narcissism costs them money. Because if there’s ne message any corporation (Sony included) talks... is money.

Save your money and use it to support developers who care about fans and delivering a great product (like CD Projekt Red) instead of virtue signaling.

With that said, I can’t give it a 1 (or a 10 like some did mere hours after release). Graphics are great. Gameplay is the same (with the addition of crouching in vegetation, something the first Metal Gear game introduced back in 1987).

And btw, the stellar reviews by IGN and friends? Here’s how it works. Access media (like IGN), depends on developers giving them early access to games in order to write about them. Which - in the case of highly-anticipated games like this - bring lots of clicks, which brings lots of money. Give the game a bad review and a powerful publisher like Naughty Dog will keep them in the doghouse when their next bug game comes out. Their competitors get access they don’t, weite articles, get clicks and money... you get the drift. Take everything these big sites say with a bucket of salt.

It’s a business. Journalistic integrity and impartiality be damned!

I understand that people say that the gameplay isn’t as bad as some people think and they understand why Naughty Dogs went with the way they did. But The Last of Us is about Joel and Ellie! Those 2 people are the definition of this game, so creating a game about another character for 10 or so hours is just not The Last of Us!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall the Last Of Us Two is far from good. The game has state of the art graphics, animation, combat and mechanics. However the game is held back by the story and the way it’s told. I have never been more unmotivated to play a game my whole life. Some of the ideas for the story are ok on their own but are executed very poorly. If the gameplay had started with Abby and we where on a revenge mission but didn’t know who we where going after, would have created suspense and conflict in the player as we would’ve seen a character we actually liked killing our beloved Joel. However we still would have been like I just want to play as Joel and Ellie so either way the player doesn’t like playing as Abby. Also the developers wanted to change to minds of players and show that good is a point of view. The way Joel died didn’t sit well with me either. The whole point of Joel’s character is that he is super careful and would always take it to the next level to protect Ellie as he felt a farther daughter bond with her and couldn’t bare to lose that again. So why he just randomly trusted some stranger is beyond me, it’s completely out of character. The game is also very politically and try’s to hard to tell you the way you should think. By themselves the politics where ok but they build up and where to much to take. I have nothing against the issues, but when it’s getting shoved down my through that I must feel this way and I must share the same opinion I don’t like that. I enjoyed working my way though abandoned town clearing out infected. Or clearing out camps and posts of the Wolves clan. I thought the combat worked well and the mechanics worked well to keep the game running smoothly. And during the game you get to visit some places that look amazing! One thing about combat that could’ve been improved was a slowing of time when you chose weapons I found to often that once I has bring up the menu, picked my gun and reloaded it the infected had a couple hits on me. Overall I enjoyed playing the game but found myself to often not wanting to play due to the story line and the bad characters and character development in the game. And it’s a shame because to first one is one of my all time favourite games and it’s a shame we had to wait seven years for this. The game has incredible graphics, combat and mechanics, and I think this had potential to be better. - Brett Expand

Try to make me feel sympathetic to Abby by forcing me to play as her for nearly half the game just does not work. The first game didn't judge or punish Joel for the morally ambiguous choice he made. It let us as the players make that judgment. This game spits in our face right off the bat and tells us Joel was wrong and deserved it. Then to add fuel to the fire it basically tells us that we need to like Abby, when she's not at all likable. It's truly unfortunate ND went this route with the story and completely abandoned what made the 1st so amazing.

The gameplay is still fun and the setting is stunning. Sadly those are not the redeeming qualities that would give this a higher rating. Definitely worth a playthrough if you enjoyed the 1st game, but a sad sequel nevertheless.

Please read some reviews like Kotaku's where they have the guts to tell you the truth and not Naughty Dog lies. You only play as Ellie for half the game and the other 12 hours as the villian. So stupid to do with a beloved character like Ellie. This trick might work with a new IP but not for a sequel of a beloved game. I also just replayed the first game and left behind dlc right before this. I loved the first 12 hours with Ellie getting revenge but losing a bit of herself with each kill. Watching her get consumed by revenge and hoping for her to change and accept it. To walk away and live her life.

Then the game does a 180 and makes you play as the villian right after she murders one of you friends. I could not continue and only made it ten minutes making her die over and over again. I looked to see how long her segment was going to be. Thinking that I would be okay with a level or 2 but it's literally the second half the game, another 12 hours! Will not finish this game. I don't want to play as this character I want to kill and be forced to actively hunt down the Ellie.

Yeah I know they want to make a statement about how no one is truely evil and the backgrounds sort of mirror each other but not at the expense of a character I have spent over 60 hours protecting and another 20 hours playing as. Do this BS with new characters in the same world and it may have worked.

The las of us Parte 2 Es el juego del año.

The gameplay is fantastic and incredibly fun, the graphics are by far the best I have ever seen to date, the music is superb, and the animations are stunning.

Here is the why the game is a 4/10. The story is so incredibly bad for so many reasons.
    1. Joel was done so filthy, acts completely out of character and the same goes for Tommy.
    2. Everyone acts out of character.
3 Abby is such an awful character
    4. The game tries to make Ellie the bad guy and tries to make Abby a good person.
    5. WHY DO WE PLAY AS ABBY FOR HALF THE GAME.
    6. The ending is horrible, Abby doesnt die, Ellie loses everything (fingers, girlfriend, baby, Joel)
    7. There is so much more but I dont wanna rant for an hour.
Im just sad because I waited 7 years and this is what we got.
If the game gets a dlc and says that the main game was all a dream then I will give it a 10/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part II is the sequel to The last of us. Set five years after the first game, The last of us part II is a game about the cycle of revenge/violence, and does a very good job of setting a dark, gritty, and depressing atmosphere. The game also sports incredible top of the line graphics and world design but still has mediocre gameplay. However the problem arises with the story and narrative, rather early in the game (somewhere around the two hour point) the main protagonist from the first game (Joel) is killed off. although his death is what kick starts the main plot, many people including myself agree that his death felt very rushed, meaningless, and retcons his established personality traits from the previous game, almost as if it were done simply for shock value. after Joel's death you embark to Seattle as Ellie on a mission for revenge, as Ellie you are joined by Dina, Jesse, and Tommy as the four set out brutally killing members of Abby's crew in retaliation. Abby by definition is the antagonist in this story but her character is done no help by being thrown under the bus by killing Joel with no explained motivation, not until halfway through the story when you are forced to play from Abby's perspective are you given her motivations for killing Joel. You are forced to play as her for a majority of the game as the writers try and make you sympathize with her character. I aswell as many other people were unable to sympathize with her due to pre-established resentment from her actions which led to a rather miserable experience for her portion of the game. The ending of the game is made worse by the fact that Ellie sacrifices everything in her life to seek her final revenge against Abby only to not kill her and let her free. The underlying message of the game is that revenge is bad however this led to an abysmally un-satisfying ending and story. In my own opinion the fact that Joel and Abby ran into each other is deus ex machina and unbelievable made worse by how in an incredibly suspicious situation, Tommy and Joel throw all of their previous survival knowledge from their 24 years of being in the apocalypse out the window. Joel's death feels skimmed over and too convenient to the plot. There really wasn't any relationship between two characters that felt as meaningful as the one shared between Joel and Ellie therefore i found myself not caring about the other characters on screen. The entire game I watched my favorite characters from the last game lose as the antagonist got her way with every situation she found herself in. after completing the game i feel like i wasted my time even playing it at all. For fans of the first game the sequel is a huge middle finger as you watch your favorite characters get dumped on, half of them being shells of who they were in the first game. the story feeling completely pointless with a terrible ending. The intentional misleading and false advertising in the trailers. and Naughty Dog's DMCA antics leading up to the release of the game. This game would be a one or two out of ten if weren't for the graphics and world design, and after finishing it i feel like i wasted my time and money. If you're a fan of the first game i strongly DO NOT recommend buying The last of us part II, however if you're a casual gamer looking for a gritty, brutal, stealth combat game i'd recommend picking this up on sale as it is not worth the 60$ retail price. I believe that if Naughty Dog wants to save this series for a third game they either need to remake the story of the second game or deem it as a passion project independant and non cannon to the first game. feel free to disagree with my review as it is my opinion based off my experience with the game. Technically it's great for this generation and there are some nice world building touches. And here's the but why build a game that was built on the relationship of two people surviving a world and then kill that relationship in one swoop.

Who wrote this, were they watching Rambo last blood. Great games and films are built on story's that are compelling, very few of us watch films or play games where there is no hope. We chase fantasy.

People who gave it ten out of ten where is your mortality and what were you playing.

Ellie so you have been living in a community for 4 years and a safe place with a good quality of life and it turns you into a commando. Happy for the equality nods and there changes that is so progressive in the gaming industry but give us a break not putting the effort in to explain the character journey.

I got bored of killing people trying to survive so quickly, I don't need a game to tell me what's right or wrong. Most who play games know what's right or wrong.

Also did you forget about character development. Making us play a character were hunting do you think that helps keep us stay on mission when we hate her for killing Joel?

Given everything that is going on in the world today you thought selling a game that shows us nothing but violence was a good idea. Even though Ellie comes to her senses at the end we have all still killed hundreds of characters to get us there.

Naughty Dog you write great stories that is your gift. This is junk, this will have come from someone who thought they were making a statement but is not in touch with the real world. You clearly all were too scared to say what you felt, you should be ashamed.

You also have made a game that some idiot will say games promote violence and to the very few you have achieved that. Bravo

Being a fan of the first game and actually considering my all time favorite, having played the campaign, at least 15 times and probably thousands of MP hours, and to this day i play it once a year with the hopes of reliving the experience i once had with the game. My love for the first game has compelled me to raise my voice, tell these companies that we are still the ones who buy your games, you cannot simply disregard the fans and everything that made the first game click with us for the pursue of some ambitious yet risky narrative that YOU KNOW will divide your fanbase.

The only reason i giving it a 4 is because its enjoyable for the most part, gameplay-wise, its beautiful and if you haven't played the first game or didnt care about it, you will probably like this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m a huge naughty dog fan so this one hurts but it needs to be written. The original was a masterpiece so I could not wait for a sequel. 7 long years later and finally it’s here. The game is visually stunning, the gameplay is similar to the original with a few new additions and a few items have been removed. The major issue with this game is the story. I feel as gamers that we develop a relationship with the main characters that is far more deep and complex than that of characters in a movie. As a grown man I feel that it is in our DNA to want to look after and protect the people in our lives and we fully experienced the ups and downs of doing this in part 1 when playing as Joel. They have taken that from us. Wesley on we witness one of our favourite game characters being beaten to death with a golf club. After everything we went through we wait 7 years for this! The enthusiasm to play the game instantly drains from the player. We’re then forced to play as the person that murdered our favourite character. We do not want to play as this person. We want them dead, erased from history like this sequel never happened. The series is ruined. There will be zero interest in a 3rd title and I’ll have serious doubts about ever buying a naughty dog game again that from us Expand

Its like the difference between Disney Star wars and classic Star wars.
It has its moments. But it will likely disappoint you.

Every single thing about the game is masterfully executed other than the narrative and writing.
The art, programming, animation, visual effects, lighting, music, ambience, atmosphere, world building, etc. All God tier!!!
There's an amazing template here that has the potential to house really great story's.
Like the original last of us.
But unfortunately There's this weird political meta narrative that makes it very difficult to get immersed in the game.
Its very heavy handed and it's very preachy. Especially visually.
I am a member of the LGBT community. I'm a liberal and I love diversity in all aspects of life.
So when I say I don't like the characters in this game its 100% not coming from a place of hate or ignorance. I feel like the game is perpetuating negative stereotypes. The way some characters look and act is pure cringe. They don't feel like real people and they don't feel like video game characters. Your expectations will be subverted. But in the worst possible way. 6/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU2 is a psychologist’s worse nightmare. *Spoilers ahead* it deals with unnecessary issues.. like Ellie who is lesbian (who didn’t need to be lesbian, but just was for the sake of it?), Dina who believes she’s is lesbian but is unknowingly pregnant from a recent relationship with a guy (What!? We’re watching teen mom now? Doesn’t know what sexual orientation she is and is brainlessly falling pregnant?), Owen who cheats on his pregnant girlfriend Mel (with Abby, who he has previous history & sexual tension), characters dealing with PTSD, characters almost killing and also killing pregnant women (WTF??), then about a child killing his own mother (and that he had to.. more WTF??).. some real messed up stuff. Was any of this, necessary to be in this game? NO..

On top of that.. you are forced to play a character you hate, Abby (who kills Joel).. as a gamer you feel betrayed.. So what’s the point of that? You want us to understand or sympathise with her actions of killing Joel? What’s the moral of the story? What is that saying to us? Every bad act that someone does in the real world.. they have a good reason?? it’s so soo messed up.. and stupidly throw in revenge as a good reason to do anything..

Young impressionable gamers would get brain damage from this game and the psychological and mental issues it deals with.

I’m sorry Neil Druckmann (writer, director & vice president of Naughty Dog, maybe you had too much power) but you should have listened to your team members who questioned these story choices and pushed back the idea. In theory it may have sounded good, as an idea, to swap characters or to the enemy character half way through and to have all this crazy, messed up characters, relationships and issues.. but it’s not what gamers wanted.. or needed.. it’s not a soap opera or TV series. It’s a massive mis-step on Naughty Dog’s part.

In the first TLOU you had this great relationship (dad & daughter like, Joel & Ellie) and the dynamic between them was sweet, charming and funny.. his love and care for Ellie to save her, like she was his own daughter was beautiful.. to play and watch.. it should have continued in this game, their adventures or misadventures of survival.. in this scary new world. The dynamic, conversations, characters did not need to be changed.. but you ruined it (Don’t fix / change what’s not broken).

You destroyed that by killing off our beloved character, Joel.. and bringing in unnecessary characters, messed up story lines and issues.. at the end of the game, when the credits roll I was left feeling.. seriously WTF? Ellie came back home, her partner left her with the baby.. and she loss 2 fingers.. and that’s how you end it?? At least at the end of the first TLOU you are left feeling good with optimism, positivity.. and hope.

At the end of TLOU2 you are left feeling disappointed and empty.. and your care of characters (and franchise) has gone out the window.

Graphics, gameplay, music, sound, cutscenes are great.. but the story, characters are a massive let down. Sorry Naughty Dog you missed the mark.

The graphics are exquisite. The gameplay is mediocre. (as this type of game does not focus on gameplay anyway. It serves it's purpose). The story....is atrorcious. Why is the story atrocious? Well no. The Last of Us part 2, is a story-driven game. The amazing graphics, and the mediocre gameplay are mere vessels to deliver the main selling point of the game. The story. The story of JOEL and ELLIE. That's what the Last of Us is supposed to be. The story of JOEL and ELLIE. I won't lie to you. I could not finish the game. I bought it, to judge for myself. Played up until the infamous "golf club" scene, took the disc out, and gave my copy up to a friend. So that he can judge for himself. And maybe pass it along, once he too, feels betrayed about how Naughty Dog decided to mislead their fans into this steaming pile of excrement. Stay away if you are one of these people who actually care about the future of gaming. These people must be taught a lesson. Don't buy that game.

    BUT

The first part of this game became so loved, famous and popular because it has an unique atmosphere - it was a story about 2 persons, about their relationships. At first they weren't even talking to each other and at the end they showed everybody, that they were ready to kill everybody to save each other. They were like a father and a daughter. They are arguing, they are joking with each other, but they are always together. But naughty dog literally smashed this concept with a golf stick. I won't talk about SJW , its acceptable (but it shows us that our dog has no balls). I just want you to know, that Ellie's flashbacks are better then entire game.
You were able to create a great game, just like the first part - modern, interesting and having a cool setting... And you know, you had done it, congrats! But you spoiled it with such stupid storyline. You didn't kill Joel, you killed atmosphere, concept and your own ratings.

I am ready to wait 7 years again, but I really want you to create the game, that's better then the first part.

I want Last Of Us to be a great story about father, daughter and a huge cruel world, not about angry lesbians.

R.I.P. Joel Miller - he was literally half of the game.

the bad. them taking a risk on killing a most beloved character in recent memory is one bold move that took such a negative impact on their part,
the story switched to knowing about the infected and instead switched to hating and caring and understanding about characters. they praised so much about having for you to care about these characters, but felt drastically flat. i like jesse. but he’s was killed and never mentioned again. they made you think so much about these characters but the characters they try to make don’t even care about the people surrounding the game. it was an ambitious game, but the risk was just to high for this one. they should’ve stayed with short story with a multiplayer.

Visually breathtaking, gameplay with little onions but this scenario ... Neil Druckmann destroyed The Last of Us, no more no less. Everyone expected to be able to play Joel and Ellie again (especially given the different trailers) BUT Naughty Dog made the decision to rig the trailers ?! Is it really a thing to do? Because most of the fans wanted a sequel with Ellie and Joel, a further development of their relationship and we were led to believe that this would be the case ... Didn't that lead the player to buy a copy of the game while having expectations mistaken?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story is the main selling point of this franchise for me. I have finished the 1st game once on ps3 and at least 3 times on ps4. The story and writing of part 1 was so engaging that the narrative was enough to make you push forward through the game. If it was another game, or a similar game with a weak story, this gameplay would bore you enough yo drop the controller and stop playing. This was my main problem with part 2. It bothered me that they killed Joel during the first few hours of the game; although it was effective enough to motivate me in hunting down the perps, the developer decided to interrupt that momentum and had me play as Joel’s killer. Her story, background and supporting characters just did not resonate with me. I was bored while playing as her. The gameplay’s flaws stick out like a sore thumb and I was very close to not finishing the game. I did eventually, and was let down. The only good parts of the game were still whenever Joel and Ellie were together on the screen. The flashbacks of them brought smiles to my face and the last talk between the 2 of them was heart wrenching. I felt more for a few minutes of these flashbacks compared to 10 or so hours playing as Abby. Not to discount the time and talent spent on the game, it was absolutely gorgeous. Everything on the technical side was next to nothing. The little details really make it a Naughty Dog game, but sadly, for me at least, the story and narrative did not deliver. Expand

I'll start with what isn't good:
Story, Characters, Character development, and holes in the plot:
Known characters act out of character, and other characters aren't properly fleshed out, including at least 2 very key characters to the story, which result in players/viewers having either a mixed or completely negative view on them as individuals. There are actually interesting and likable characters in this, but only few overall. The story in it's current state is almost piss poor, having events and actions of characters both new and old that don't really make sense or just hurt the flow of the story and the player's experience with it. Some events even seem more about shock value than anything else. The fact that this is almost constant in the game doesn't give any help to it's case. And though they try to make this game into an intriguing revenge story, it falls flat on itself a few times, and just ends up.......weak and confusing to some, especially once the games over. Though I won't go into detail, once you play the game, you see these problems 2-4 hours into this 25 hour "experience". If you were for the story of The Last Of Us part 1, part 2 may not be your cup of tea.

Now, there here's what's good about the game:
Graphics, Design, and overall look is a definite 10/10. Every place you go to in the story has polish, and is just magnificent. The detail in visuals and interactions in the settings shown really make this game an amazing PS4 title in terms of visuals, no doubt the best in the consoles history. The atmosphere is also rich in each area, getting you in the right mood for the moment whether it be dread, nervousness, a sense of calm. Level design was alright and nice to navigate, but not really a large factor. Sound and music were very nice, in my opinion better than the first game. If you love visuals and sound, your gonna enjoy this game alt.

Now the game play: is honestly the same as TLoU 1, with only minor changes. Ultimately it feels mostly the same, which really will be hit or miss with others, but is a bit disappointing since it relies on old controls.

Overall, I have to give this game a disappointing 4/10. The game play will be fun if you like the TLoU gameplay, but if you didn't, it might seem mediocre to you. Graphics, and visuals are top tier, without question. The story will be the big hurdle, being VERY hit or miss with players (as seen everywhere online). If it misses, your experience will be ruined, with little chance of it getting better at the end. If it hits for you, then, you MIGHT just like the game up to the end.
The worst part about it is that NaughtyDog had almost everything for a good game in their hands, from the characters to the events that happen in game. Yet somehow, they messed up in execution. IMO, if the order of some events were simply changed, and some characters had more screen time , without any major character changes, TLoU part 2 would be closer to being an understandably great game, though not exactly the same as TLoU.

First off, I would give this game a 5 but that's considered "mixed". I am not "mixed" about the game, I know its not as good as "professional" reviewers say.

I knew since Left Behind DLC that Ellie was gay and had absolutely no problem with that. That dlc was fantastic! With that out of the way, without spoiling the story, this is why I believe the game just doesn't hit the right mark.

    Pros:
    Graphics are fantastic!
Technically one of the best. The detail in character animations is amazing, Abby has a fear of heights, try standing near a high ledge and see what happens. That's the kind of detail Naughty Dog has perfected.
Acting, the people programming the game, all brought their A game.

    Cons:
Levels drag on for far too long. While the gameplay has it's moments, it gets repetitive as new enemies appear like ninjas and for the most part you can run past them even on survivor mode, it just takes a few tries. Puzzles are also incredibly easy, if you are stuck, the main solution is to "look up".
Characters are forgettable and contain no unique traits other than their gender. Ellie likes to draw and play music, her girlfriend, Dina, is Jewish... that's the end of her character and all other side characters follow the same path. There are two other characters which are much more interesting unfortunately they come late into the game and don't really play into the main story.

    Story:
I will not spoil the story but know that it's about character loss and revenge. It concentrates way more on love triangles than it does on the infected. In fact, by the end of the game, I noticed the infected were part of the game but not the story. Not once were the Infected the main problem, they were used as an obstacle to tell a much darker "Life is strange" story.
The pacing was also incredibly awful. They should have delayed the game to rearrange the chapters so that you have a chance to get to know some characters before the story hits its climax.

This game was such a waste of great talent. And I feel it was written for a particular group rather than for the masses and even though it tries to be diverse it forgets that individuality is a special thing. For example, there are huge 6ft bruisers in the game, both men and women. All they did character swap character models so it's the same enemy. I don't think they know how rare a bulking 6ft woman is. Instead of doing that, maybe have women be more sneaky and maneuverable, maybe even have them in camo while they hunt us down. But instead it denies the uniqueness of a person to deliver a message.

As a final note, I ignored spoilers and leaks for the game. All the hate I heard, I ignored it. I spent my own money, bought it digitally, and gave it the benefit of the doubt cause I think Naughty Dog is awesome and they never let me down when it came to their games. Unfortunately, that didn't help with my enjoyment of the game. It wasn't just the story but the outdated gameplay, with the completely unnecessary jump button, the way it artificially slowed down the game with safes and locked doors.
I really wanted everyone to be wrong about this game.... I really tried to like it....

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok where to begin! First of all I want to say that the Last of Us Part 1 Was an absolute masterpiece! Having grown so found of Joel and Ellie, watching Joel go through heart ache, survive an apocalypse, grow hardened to the world. But then get a second chance with Ellie was amazing. I waited patiently for the follow up. Staying spoiler free despite the odds stacked against me. Saying that I am disappointed, angry, confused and broken with the Last of us part 2 is an understatement! I just don’t get it?? How can you mess up a winning formula that was pretty much guaranteed to sell and do well. Last of Us part 2

Graphics are amazing - TBF i expect nothing less from a AAA title in 2020!

Gameplay mechanics are good but pretty much the same as the first with some improvements - going prone, climbing and dodging but that’s about it.

Story is disgusting! Treatment of Joel, not just killing him but making him die in the most painful, brutal way possible and then literally spitting on his dead body??? Just not acceptable however you try and slice it.

Ellie is this mean and a not so likeable character all of a sudden?? Must be the fact that she has lived in relative safety with her own home, surrounded by loved ones, friends and community for the last 4 years?? We have hardly any scenes of Joel and Ellie one museum flashback which is really nice. But that’s it, every other scene between them she is just horrible to him. Newsflash NaughtyDog, practically everyone of us doesn’t think what Joel did at the end of Last of Us was that big a deal!?!! I think every father would have done the same in a flash!?! I think any daughter or other human would understand why he choose not to let her die. Making us play for so long as the character who kills Joel has to be the biggest mistake ever made in gaming history. She is shoved down your throat in this linear story. You just have to grit your teeth and try and get through. Even forces you to beat Ellie to a pulp at one stage and fight Tommy. Everything I am told about Abby still doesn’t make me like her. Her father is not very likeable, her redemption with two random kids doesnt make any sense. They saved her life she says over and over again, well so did Joel didn’t make a difference then!?!?! No she still brutalised him, not even on he saved my life I’ll make it quick!!! Even the kids who are supposed to be why we should like her are a bit annoying. Lev basically runs off and gets his mother and sister killed after you have just spent 2 hours trying to save the same sister.

Ellie kills like 1000 people trying to get to Abby and then when you finally get your hands on her right at the end and think you’ll get a pay off and some redemption. She decides killing is bad and she’s not worth it. In this mission of pointless revenge Ellie loses everyone and everything she ever had. No Joel, no Tommy, no Dina, can’t go back to Jackson. Just left alone, wondering the wilderness and then the game finishes!

Shame on you NaugtyDog, you always had my money regardless, I’d buy your products day 1 without even thinking about it, not anymore!

I wanted to save my judgement after I finished the whole game and man it was a disappointment. I gave it like 4/10 because of all the handwork people have put in graphic or game play wise. But man I didn't come to Last of Us for that I came for the story, build on from the part 1. I don't know if the devs or director are trying to be different just cause they wanna be different but man there are so many points in the game so unnecessary doesn't build anything from the part 1. It makes sense when director and the writer for part 1 left, which now I feel like they shouldn't even made part 2 better they left the series when part 1 ended. I dont even wanna start talking about Joel, who was our avatar through out the first part, I didn't even get to play him like wtf, we knew he was gonna die but killing him in unbelievable **** way ,by a **** character named abby. Imagine playing a person who just killed a character what you came to play, yeah they wanted to be different took a risk etc, why tho. They are showing "She got a reason too" and I have to fight Ellie , cause some **** character from the first part had some revenge. Man whoever leaked the plot good cause spending 60 dollars during this pandemic on this **** writing is not worth it. Main thing "Cycle of revenge isn't it a horrible thing" man wtf no **** but its a game goddamn it. We didn't see more of Issac or the scar group. We didn't go more into furthering into the lore of the apocalypse . The ending was so **** cant even build empathy such a bad story telling, I dont know how many times I have said it so awful. There were so many better aways to go about this story, waited 5 years for this !!!!! Expand

Because that'll make the ending OK (ish), I feel this game should've been labelled Part 3, Then I'd have more truck with the Abby and Ellie feud ending as it stands, with part 2 being the story of Ellie coming to terms with how Joel lied to her about the Hospital, Having said that. Since I now know Joel's dead, What would the point of that game be now

I wanted to give it a higher score, phenomenal Graphics and Amazing gameplay can't save it from its poor story

The music, the gameplay and the atmosphere are all great, but I just don't feel the story. I can see what they where trying to do with playing Abby to sympathies with her, but it's doesn't click with me. And the pacing is just off putting. Also the ending and the last flashback seemed weird, Ellie had a family, a home and everything seemed fine, but then Tommy comes out of nowhere to have Ellie kill Abby. Which she doesn't do, I know they want her break the ''cycle of revenge'', but it would have been better if she killed and gets back home, the same ending is happening and she realizes that it didn't fulfill her. In a way the ending is just that but it would have filled the players that didn't like Abby with satisfaction, and the players that like her would have been broken like the game wants the player to feel as it seems. Also the Joel Cutscene, she can forgive Abby but doesn't forgive Joel, I can see why but I just feels so rushed in the End. Anyway I would have liked a totally different story to begin with, maybe where they explore Ellies Immunity or maybe just a game where Abby is played with no Joel and Ellie. But that's just my Opinion, not a fact.

Aside from all that we all expected the Combat, Gameplay, Customization, Visuals, Graphics, Soundtrack, Infected, Mechanics, AI to be phenomenal which it was but with The Last Of Us being a mostly story driven game and “Ellies Revenge” never really being a thing I think its fair to rate it a 5/10 would I buy it again ? Definitely not for the 60$ price point especially with it having no multiplayer mode but if you could snatch it for a lower price it definitely would not be a complete waste like I said right direction but was not executed in the right way not that everyone expected it to be a Disney fairytale but it really does feel like there’s no possible way this is what a company like Naughty Dog comes up with in a 6 year development of one of the most cherished PlayStation exclusives of all time Expand

I played the game over the course of a week, and just finished it. The Last of Us was one of my favorite games of all time, so I held this sequel to a very high standard. My biggest problem with this game was the story. The first game's story was super emotional, devastating, and beautiful, all at the same time. This game...was not. The entire course of the game, I felt very disturbed. The game is dark, more so than the first. Do not get me wrong, I do not mind if games are dark if they're pulled off well, but this game was not. I can't describe it without getting into spoiler territory, but the story to this game actually made me feel really depressed. The pacing of the story was weird, and the plot twists were executed very poorly. I felt like the gameplay and upgrading was superior to the first one, but it got repetitive. The amount of times I felt like I needed to be stealthy got very old. Enemy A.I. felt very inconsistent, and stealth encounters were at times very easy, and other times, weirdly hard. Many of the characters from the original game were ruined for me, and I was not a fan of many of the new characters.

For some positives, I will say that visuals are breathtaking. Some of the best I have ever seen in a video game, actually. There was also one level in the game that was open world-ish, and I wish there would have been more sections like this, because it was done very well. The voice-acting also felt professional and very well done.

Overall, as a video game, this game is pretty good. I was able to finish it, and as somebody who has a huge backlog of games I've started, but never finished, that's an impressive feat for a 20 hour game. However, as a sequel to the one of the most beloved games I've ever played, I was very disappointed with the direction Naughty Dog chose to go for this game. If you are a fan of the original Last of Us, approach this game with caution. I would recommend at least one playthrough, but do not go in expecting this game to be like the first, because it's not.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's quite sad waiting so long for what they delivered. The game design is nice, stunning graphics, immersive sound, fun gameplay, but the plot was honestly just terrible. The way they kill off Joel, he didn't die saving Ellie or doing something heroic, he died to someone he saved. Naughty Dog really killed him off just like that. Not only that, but we also get to play as Abby, the girl who killed Joel in cold blood after he saved her. After Joel's death, it's only natural to want to seek revenge on Abby, which never actually happens. In the end, we're left with Ellie who is now alone and missing 2 fingers, while Abby is left in one piece. Ellie went through everything for absolutely nothing, if you're in it for the gameplay, by all means, go ahead buy it, but if you played the first game and are mostly there for the plot beware, you might be dissapointed. The shifting of blame to fans for not swallowing unlikable new characters or hard to understand plot points ignores the fact that the developer took far too many bizarre gambles with a property of this caliber to deflect blame.

The gameplay, environments, and music recover the value of this experience to a degree. However, a grueling and essentially nihilistic story will leave most normal gamers asking "what was the point?".

Then it all comes crashing down on the bad implementation of the story. The story feels like the first draft of a college english paper that was composed of several high school english papers on the same subject. It lacks an iota of consideration for consistency of character or narrative development. This series is a narrative focused single player experience, and will be judged critically on that story. Years from now, the only reason I will even remember this game exists is because of how disappointed I am in the game and the studio. The characters are inconsistent, underdeveloped, and do not act like sane human beings. You have a single thread throughout the story of how "an eye for an eye makes the world blind" but you never feel satisfied by the plot developments or the ridiculous need to pile plot threads that never build to a single satisfying conclusion. I bought the game to know exactly why there was so much hate for the game. Now that I am done I hope Naughty Dog recognizes that this is the worst game they have ever put out, and it should serve as a badge of shame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay wise and graphics it's certainly awesome, even more so than TLOU...

The story though... it's just dumb and doesn't really make a lot of sense, mostly because the characters you knew don't behave in the same way they did, they just feel like different people.

Also, forcing you to play as the murderer of your beloved main character for practically half the game didn't really do anything for me (nor the story with her entire entourage).

I mean, it's like after shooting Bambi's mother you do half the film about the hardships the hunter went through in his life up to that moment and pretty much implying it was justified.

Some people like to say this game is getting negative reviews because of LGBT hate against Ellie (which i think is a dumb point, Left Behind got great user reviews while depicting Ellie as a lesbian) or Abby's sex scene... srsly? people waited 7 years for this game and they are just gonna trash it because there is a 30 second sex scene they don't like?

If people think that's more likely than the story just being overall poor (and i would say even BAD for what was expected of ND and TLOU)... well i guess adding an LGBT/Sexist element to any story makes it invulnerable to critic: if you don't like it, you are a bigot, even if you liked the previous iteration which also was pro-LGBT and many other games with female leads.

i loved the last of us 1 and completed it start to finish the day before i got this game (as well as completing it 3 other times). So i can confidently say that whilst the graphics, game play, ai and environments are 10/10, the story is weak and rips you away from your favorite characters yet fails to treat new characters well enough like Abby or Jesse.

A lot of the problems is with how Abby's narrative was portrayed, we are given very little time to sympathies with her, especially with the fact that Joel actually saves her life and Ellie begs for his life. So when the game forces the player to play as her for half the game and rip you away from an Ellie revenge story it feels disappointing to the trailer expectations and hype.

About 2 hours into the game (without seeing the leaks or many trailers to go in blind) i thought the game was going to go for an open-world survival horror story, where the player can hunt down each of the people responsible to find Abby, whilst infected and WLFs exist in an open world that Ellie needs to traverse to find supplies and the targets. Sounds cool? yea i wish the game continued this way but it dosnt...

...the game unfortunately gets linear again after about 50 mins of a fantastic open world area where the player can go where they want, get supplies, find treasures/clues/puzzles, be attacked completely out the blue by enemies (like one time at a workbench which was crazy cool), but then this ends and its back to being linear.

this is where the story fails, as when many of targets are killed, i simply don't remember or recognize who they are, the initial act of the game is rushed and you wont remember who the people are whom Ellie kills until they are dead. Even characters like Ellie are treated like Dina's rebound and Tommy is gone except for probably 6 minutes of screen time.

To conclude, i am very disappointed after 7 years and probably unlimited funds from Sony that they made a weak story line (that was very predictable in areas) and a surprisingly linear game.

There is a reason why 'The Last of Us' does not have Part 1 in its title, it was a concluded story with Ellie's acceptance of Joel's lie. A bittersweet ending that did not need a brutal ending for characters and a first draft story with so many back and forths.

The gameplay was amazing and the design, artwork, further on, graphics were gorgeous, you can't deny it, so how do you ever come with a statement of a rating being below 2? Half a point for characteristics and biography, because half of it made sense and logic and the other half was poorly writen **** and im a good **** detector at poker, reference included. Spoiler alert further on, to just come up with such a dumb story line for Joel's death is disrespectful for the character itself and the fanbase, shame on you, especially not even taking the responsability for it aswell. I mean seriously, the death of another poor souls father which is a doctor is too poorly written, especially when the girl, if she even was told, knew his name, and name only. So im supposed to understand that she traveled the entire USA, looking and calling out every guy named Joel, alive or dead, and killing every person named Joel. Im sorry for swearing, but for **** sake, i ain't no detective, but you sure as hell need to know more ablut the person, and i sure as hell know, no one in that hospital knows Joel at all, or how he even looks like, or where he went. Enough about this, everyone who rated below 6 was smart enough to understand that. Now, everyone hates when the game does not allow the person to choose on anything or isn't allowed to try and do something about something, especially during the ending, and yall know which ending im talking about. We were "used" in this game for nothing in the end, waiting for that something, which we never ever got or will even get close to. Basically the game was about nothing but knowing that, spoiler alert, Joel dies. They even forced us to play with the character we hate later on, disgusting. Might aswell create a new rating, hey ESBN, here is a new suggestion, "forced torture", how does that sound?
