This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to turn it off so many times, struggled to get through the game for a terrible ending. The pacing on this game was horrible, confusing, full of random flashbacks, it was way longer than it should have, literally made me play as a character I didn't enjoy. Even though I enjoyed the gameplay it got super repetitive because the game was so long, however, the graphics and soundtrack were amazing. Expand

Severely lacks game luster after an hour or 2. The combat is severely lacking and feels forced, unlike the first title. Oh and the characters are trash, just kept on dragging the story through the mud and the build up on everything for the past couple years was a waste.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved first game, replayed it like 5 times and this game i uninstalled straight after finishing. I didn't really wanted to finish it at all. Gameplay good, game looks and sounds grate, but the story is where i see problem. I can understand wanting to hide some plot-twist, but straight out lying about it, its just not ok. I'm talking about Joel death, i really came to like this character while playing 1 game and to kill him in first 2 hours of the game and the way he was killed. Its just disrespectful for this character#Joel deserve better. If you really needed him dead it could be arranged better then it was. After that Abby for me was irredeemable, i didn't want to play as her. I killed her on purpose often, this was the moment where i wanted to drop the game, but i also wanted to see how it ends so i kept playing. Than we came to Abby vs Elly fight and again i doubted if its worth it to finish this game. And then we came to the end, i personally wasn't satisfied with how it ends. Elly lost everything for nothing, didn't even kill Abby in the end. I suppose playing as Abby should have caused some sympathy for her, which it didn't, and i had to force myself to play this part (which wasn't all that short). If it was some new game with new characters it would have been taken better, but as it is sequel... Flashbacks was great they brought back what i loved from the first game interaction between Joel and Elly, but it also showed part 2 we can never get. In the end i didn't enjoy playing this game all that much(especially not Abby part),but it had its moments, anyway i'm gonna forget i aver played this game and never will return to it again. Expand

While the basics are flawless, the narrative lacks purpose, the character arcs miss genuine inflection and the driving force of the whole story feels empty and does not provide justifiable motivation. Overall TLOU provides a fun experience for those not familiar with the theme and purpose presented in the original, however when compared as a sequel it would be safe to say that the story that kept players anticipating for 7 years is was predictable, uninspired and seems to cater to less complex themes (such as vengeance, heartbreak and abandonment). The story arc of TLOU Part 2 detracts from the importance of your actions, and instead forces you into uncomfortable situations for nothing more than shock value and hollow motivation; of which you spend the next 20 hours tracing a predefined ending with little to no closure over. While it is clear that NaughtyDog left room for Part 3, I would have to advise against it, fearing worse bastardization of a story meant to inspire visceral emotion, that instead caters to impulse and bloodlust with little to no moral ambiguity to ponder over. The game is not awful, but the the decline in quality is too step. After more than 15 hours of gameplay, I just don't have the will to keep playing. The fact that after so much time playing the game I just can't muster the will to finish what remains really speaks how disappointing this game is. A real shame :(

I never felt a connection to the new characters as much as I did try. Naughty Dog made a character that was so obvious you were supposed to sympathize for. But it was so FORCED! Unlike the first one which was organic. In the first game, I didn’t even notice how attached to Joel I was until he he got severely hurt. I was surprised. I couldn’t get that spark back this time around. The story was highly disappointing and all over the place. This is just my personal opinion, but it was too long. I’m a slow gamer as it is, and this game took forever. You can tell there is a message being pushed. Whether or not you like the message I believe is a personal decision every individual has the right to make. And for those who do not like the message should not be condemned. Especially when it so upfront and obvious. On the positive side, like everyone clearly praises, it’s graphics are amazing. I was surprised I was playing a PS4 game. A lot of effort was put into graphics and it shows. Gameplay is familiar. Still good and easy to learn like the first one. And my oh my, can you customize the settings. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II had tremendous potential but the end product feels like it shot itself in the foot and at times, feels subversive. What made the first game great was seeing Joel and Ellie's develop a father-daughter relationship. They persevered through rocky times and basked in short, heartwarming moments before reaching an ultimately bittersweet ending.

The Last of Us II takes what made the first story great and throws it out the window. While dark, brutal moments are expected in a post-apocalyptic type environment, killing off Joel so early and in such a gruesome manner just set up the game for disappointment. Then making the player play as Joel's killer and for an extended duration is just rubbing salt in the wound.

The gameplay, while solid and with some satisfying melee, isn't enough to make up for the lack of interest that sets in after Joel's death and only compounds when switching to Abby.

I see what the director and writer were going for and their desire to do something a bit daring with the story is commendable. However, the execution just falls flat on its face. Thez wanted a divisive game and it certainly succeedes on that front.

A massive disappointment, a technical masterpiece with few good moments and an awesome boss fight ultimately messed up by terrible decisions and story. Culminating in an unsatisfying ending. They make you play as the villain to make you root for her, but it all falls flat and you just don’t care about her. The villain’s character model is ridiculous and the game makes you fight Ellie as her expecting you to hve fun while doing it. They wanted us to be frustrated by a long game with moments that make you just tear up in agony, good job. I loved the original game, the chemistry between Joel and Ellie and the moral dilemmas it had, but this new game is as if it were written by someone who hates the first game. Nice job Naught, I won’t trust you again and will definitely never buy a game that has anything to do with Neil Druckman. Sold my copy of the game for 90% of the price that I originally paid. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not good... simple. This is a perfect example of a game that has great graphics and great gameplay, but terrible story. Players want to sympathize with the characters they are playing as. Not play as someone who they utterly hate for 40% of the game. With over 20+ hours of gameplay, all you can ask after the beginning section is when is it going to be over. It starts as a revenge story, but then it just starts branching out and showing it's stance on different themes in today's world with a character going under a transition from girl to boy, and lesbian relationships, which in part isn't a bad thing, but for the game story to be played out like that, it doesn't take the full effect and instead portrays these themes as a joke. It's terrible to see critics loving this game over the graphics and gameplay when a game like this specializes on its story which was perfectly built with the previous title. This game's story is an insult to the last and the advertising for this game is fake since most of the players thought Joel was still going to be around. If this was what they meant to do with the story, all I can say is that it was terribly executed by the director and the naughty dog team. This isn't just an insult to the previous tile, but also an insult to gaming reviews and the fanbase as a whole.

TL;DR: 4/10 because gameplay and graphics are pretty good. Everything else is ****

This game is something I had been looking forward to for 7 years. The original game is to this day my favourite game ever, having played it 6 times, and the DLC twice.
I didn't want to set myself up for disappointment though. After all, sequels more often than not do not live up to the height of their original. The original was an easy 10/10, and I went into this expecting an 8/10.
The game got off to an okay start. Was unsure of the weird tension between Joel and Ellie, although this makes sense when we find out later on that Ellie had returned to the Hospital and discovered the truth of what happened there. Although, I was a bit confused as to why I was suddenly playing as a stranger only a little bit into the game...
Then there's the scene that a lot of people are angry about... I remember in the original game, never wanting to hop off for the night, I always wanted to keep going, and find out how their story ends. I finished it over 3 days, and always feeling really excited to get back on the PS3 and continue the story/game.
Well after Joel's death scene, I never felt that excitement. I distinctly remember wanting NOT to play. I had to basically force myself to get back onto the PS4 the next time to continue, with a "lets just get through it" demeanour. I still wanted to play through it quickly, but that was just to avoid spoilers, not because I had any strong desire to play.
There comes a scene roughly 1/3 into the game where Abby finds Ellie and Co at the Theatre, and hold Tommy at gunpoint, before then ending on a cliff hanger and taking you on some long-winded flashback through Abby's story.
This was a character I hated. I had no emotional connection with this character, they had brutally murdered my favourite character, and I had absolutely 0 interest in their story and didn't want to play as them.
For the majority of the Abby segment I was bored out of my mind. A first for me in any Naughty Dog game. I had 0 emotional investment in this character, and just wanted to get back to the characters I was emotionally invested in.
Did her scenes make me like her better? Yes. Her attitude towards Lev and Yara, and how her relationship with them grew throughout the story was beautiful. Did it make me like her though? No.
Overall, I didn't have an issue with Joel dying. They live in a **** world, with a dangerous infection and dangerous people. The idea of him retiring is a bit unrealistic. Like many other people it's the way he died that upset me.
The sick and disappointment that sat in my stomach for the rest of the game after seeing a character I had liked for 7 years go down like that, ruined the rest of what could have been a really good game. To then make you play as the character that killed him and try to be forced to like her, and at some point be FORCED to beat up Ellie even though I’m sure that was something literally no one wanted to do, was just such an awful decision and the cherry on top.
To force player to beat up a beloved character was one of the many terrible design choices of the game.
And I think it does come down to perhaps Naughty Dog's underestimation of players emotional investment in this character. I 100% know that if I hadn't played the original, and started out with this one that I would think it was a beautiful game.
As a standalone game it is brilliant. Easily a 9/10. But unfortunately it's not a standalone game, and because of everything they created with the first game, and how they then destroyed that with the second, I can't give it any more than a

Gameplay in the 2nd one is insane and the artwork is out of this world. Although this is the case, I just feel that the creators really destroyed the series with this game. The story was honestly just awful and was all over the place. I am really upset that I waited 7 years to play as Joel and Ellie again only to spend the majority of the time playing as pointless characters and failing to sympathize with the main antagonistic. I also did not care for how anti-climatic the plot became. (SPOILER AHEAD) When Abby has her weapon on Tommy and Ellie, it makes no sense to ruin the momentum by switching off into an overdrawn out storyline of Abby's journey. Along with this the ending honestly makes no sense. A game that is clearly about violence and revenge decides, in the end, that violence isn't the answer??? Like come on, aside from the fact Joel got killed off in the worst way possible, why did Ellie just decide to forget all the pain she was caused and let Abby live after being so clearly determined to kill Abby. Overall, the game is decent at best and if you were a fan of the first one I'd recommend not ruining the series for yourself unless you are super bored. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all some backstory. Let me first say i am a brown dude with very high regards for liberal views. Now that out of the way. Also I am a PC gamer bought PS3 just to play GTA 5 back in the days and a friend gave me Uncharted 3 and fell in love with the series and Naughty Dogs storytelling. Bought PS4 and also bought Last of Us for PS3 and remastered for PS4. I still play the game time to time like watching a movie again and again that I like. Now lets get to Last of 2.

Joel Dies : No problem, I knew its was going to be his fate since I first saw the revel trailer in my gut.
How he dies: No problem there, someone taking revenge, he was not a saint
He was stupid: He let his guard down no problem
Lesbian, transgender, leftist messages: No problem, I think they should push more of these so we feel normal the way forward in our diverse real world
Ending: Forgiveness, No problem with that

THE PROBLEM ? : I do not want to play as ABBY, here is the thing I have every single Uncharted game in my collection except the lost legacy. You know why ? Because I do not care about those characters in uncharted universe. When you buy a Part 2 of a story based game you expect a certain things. For me Last of us is about Joel and Ellie like uncharted about Sully and Drake. The story could have remained same but could have been just Eliies part and later added dlc could have shown Abbys part as they shown Ellies part in first games DLC so we could justify the ending in P2 just like in P1. Force playing as Abby and breaking the story like this jumble way really messed up the story. Do not get me wrong I can handle the dark brutal story but not in this messy way. This is not upto the Naughty Dog standards. Somehow I felt cheated, if you want Abbys story you could have made another separate game like lost legacy as well. Another problem is making me feel bad, hey man whoever wrote the story, learn the difference between a dark story and making the audience feel bad forcefully. Telltale Walking Dead following Clementine was a dark story, where Joel like character Lee dies in first season. But this one is just garbage and you feel guiltier than the Walking Dead playing this game.

Gameplay felt very polished and graphic my god it is the most gorgeous graphics I have seen in PS4 to date. Here you can see the Naughty Dog Standard. But I have a PC with 2060 TI GPU which was almost the price of a PS4. I do not play games from Naughty Dogs in PS4 for graphics but for story and experience. And if I have a bad experience and feel bad about my self after playing this game then whats the point.

I do not want to keep this game as I will never play this again and will be selling this to second hand market, I also urge those who bought this do not want to keep sell it to second hand market and flood it. They might have leaked the footage themselves like Thor Ragnarok to create controversy and let the you tubers fired up for free marketing. They sold around four million copies already. Buy it from second hand market guys do not pay them $60, its not worth it and you will not keep it.

Here is what I will do, I will forget about this game soon and pretend it does not exist. Again the difference between Part 1 I have 2 copy of that in my collection in a very safe showcase and this is going to another person for 20-30 droller. Another thing, good luck selling it to me and a lot of angry gamer a remastered version for PS5. This franchise is dead to me over and out.

4/10 for the people who worked day and night to make this **** story into a decent game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Soooo. First of all this is not a review bombing, thats why there is no zero rank. Well I finished the game yesterday. And for me it was awful. Don't get me wrong, not everything was awful. I loved the gameplay mechanincs, graphics, soundtrack and AI. First half was very good, I really enjoyed the game even after that horrible death of Joel. But one thing I can't get over is how stupidly the death was written. That whole situtation is so damn stupid in wider perspective of previous game and all those situations Joel and Ellie went through. Remember how Joel saw "injured" man on the road and exactly knew what that was about? He was so experienced after so many years of survival. Same for Tommy. But now? Well I'm Tommy and this is my brother Joel hello hello come to our town you really bad looking strangers. Oh and Joel, could you please stand in the middle of the room without gun in your hand just to be easy target? Thank you. I mean come on, that is really poor writing. And don't tell me that after 4 years living in the safe city BUT still going on patrols killing clickers and dangerous strangers Joel would get so soft and incatious. I won't even start about lies in the trailers, but at least they could leave Joel in game as Ellie's halucinations or something because of that PTSD. At least we would have some sort of farewell with Joel's character. 20+ hours of gameplay and there was maybe 2 hours top with Joel around or somehow included. But how could ND do worse after this I asked myself while playing. Well the other half of the game you play as this really unlikeable character Abby who murdered Joel gruesomely. Her side of story really bored. I really didn't care about her NPC father or romance with Owen etc. How could this be a good idea? I'm really sad after this waiting. If they would at least include Joel more in the story. I hope there won't be any part III. And I hope Troy Baker will play some new awesome character in a game that is not made by Naughty Dog because I really like that guy. Expand

TLOU set such a high bar with its initial offering back on the PS3, that a sequel was always going to be a tough act to follow. All of its achievements in visual, voice acting,TLOU set such a high bar with its initial offering back on the PS3, that a sequel was always going to be a tough act to follow. Part Two has been seven years in the making and while it maybe the most technically impressive game I've ever played, I wouldn't want recommend it to anyone that is not already a die hard fan of the series. All of its achievements in visual, voice acting, animations is mired by a messy, nonsensical plot that will leave you with a very unsatisfied taste in your mouth. Little touches like the guitar mini game started off cute the first time you do it but by the third or fourth time, it has long lost its luster and I just played horrible out of spite. So much of your game play experience will be spent with new characters, most of which aren't closed to being fully fleshed out and get discarded for shock value or to pad the plot armor for this poorly contrived, revenge driven narrative. The core mechanics of TLOUS are mostly unchanged apart from dodge and prone mechanics making the combat more fluid. However, you'll encounter the same enemies and will exploit them with the same tactics as the A.I. rarely catches on. The Joel/Ellie magic is still shines when they get their moments. Unfortunately, those moments are few and far between. While I'm glad they didn't try to shoehorn in some pointless multiplayer mode, there is no chance in hell I'd want to revisit this game which feels like a massive misstep for a franchise with so much promise.

    Pros:
A visual eyegasam with some of the best scenery you'll ever see on current gen systems
Extremely fluid environmental animations (water, grass, snow)
Tons of top notch voice acting and dramatic cut scenes
    Dodge and prone mechanics added
    Branching skill tree upgrading system

    Cons:
The storyboard is a jumbled mess of mass confusion.
Large amounts of time spent with new characters who are poorly developed and discarded without any meaningful impact
Gameplay becomes a repetitive slog with much of the core mechanics unchanged from the original
The mini-games are short lived fun that get old fast and can't be accessed separately if you want to mess around with them exclusively
Replay value is virtually non-existent with a vapid resolution that leaves the whole franchise on a broken foundation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game had me fooled from the beginning, I managed to avoid any and all spoilers and preordered the thing. That was my first mistake.

My second mistake was somehow believing that the trailers they presented of the game would actually
would be happening in the game with minor alterations,

I thought I would be playing as one of the main characters from the first game, just like they said before launch.

I started to play the game and from the beginning I felt something was off, the atmosphere was a bit off and I couldnt connect with any of the characters, even the old ones. Around two hours in and the thing happened and I was shocked and appalled not because it happened but how out of character abrupt the whole situation was, it felt rushed.

I carried on playing and tried to get a grip of the story, but around five hours in I became bored.
I understood the point of the game, but the acting felt forced and of lacking any impact apart from shock value.

I guess I should have voted with my wallet and returned the game to the shop, but they would not
    accept refund.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A heartbreaking, soul-crushing disappointment. That is the most appropriate way for me to sum up my experience playing The Last of Us Part II. Unlike probably many of the day one 0/10 scores here I actually waited to finish the entire game before commenting. Now having finished the final moments, I can honestly say I can't recall a more disappointing sequel to such a beloved game as this. The original Last of Us is one of my favorite games of the 25+ years I've been gaming. It's a masterpiece of storytelling, realistic character development, (for the time) stellar graphics and tense, engaging gameplay. I don't know how many times I've played it through on PS3 and the PS4 remaster. This is all to say these opinions are coming from someone who absolutely loved the world and characters ND created.

I cannot therefore reconcile how the writers and director of TLOU2 could have possibly thought that the direction they took with this appalling, grotesque sequel would appeal to anyone who had grown to love the characters they spent so much time with in the original. In the opening hours they have a completely new and honestly mostly unlikable character brutally murder the main character of the original while the other main character watches in horror screaming for his life. Then another new character spits on his dead body. It's symbolic in a way as that's exactly what ND has done to the fans here, spit in their faces.

All of that I can actually abide. The cherry on top of this slap in the face is forcing players to play as the character who just murdered the character ND manipulated fans to believe they would be playing as (or along side) via misleading advertising for over 10 hours! And in that time you are forced to actually fight against the other beloved main character as some sort of absurd boss fight. I lost count how many times I rolled my eyes at the heavy handed on the nose absurdity of this 2nd act. We get it, all humans are monsters in this new world and evil vs good are just matters of perspective. These are not brilliant or original concepts and the way ND approached them in the game was so amateurish it seemed like they either just didn't give a damn and it was pure laziness or they were actually intentionally trying to upset and disappoint fans. I know that seems insane but I kept thinking that while playing the game, does ND actually just hate their fans and want to anger them? It seemed like the only explanation outside of just the world greatest miscalculation on how the story would be perceived. Coming from ND who set the bar so insanely high with the quality narrative of the original, it's just inexplicable how bad the writing, characters and narrative were in this.

Graphics: 9/10 - Game is gorgeous, up there with some of the best PS4 titles. Perhaps not the systems best but certainly in contention with the likes of RDR2 and Death Stranding.

Gameplay 7/10 - Solid but largely familiar with very little innovation over the past 7 years

Story 2/10 - An utter failure

Overall - 4/10 As a Last of Us game story must be weighted significantly higher since this is the main reason many fans played the original and this sequel. ND missed the mark so completely and thoroughly with this horrible sequel. It's hard to overstate my disappointment as a huge fan of the superb and infinitely superior original. Would not under any circumstances recommend that a fan of the first game buy this, but if you're new to the series, don't care to play the better original and don't care about the terrible story then go for it because the graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is fun. Wait for a sale though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First let me say this game was not all bad. Like many people I thoroughly enjoyed the visuals, the storyline at the beginning in Jackson, and Dina and Ellie’s side story. However, that’s about all I can say for the good parts.

I’m sure at some point (maybe even soon) this comment will be taken down since it is going to be very critical of the game. Fine by me. This game completely destroyed everything the first one built. From Ellie and Joel’s relationship becoming fuller and more compassionate, to Ellie’s character development in strength and understanding of the world. This game had so much potential to be great, and I think a lot of us expected a storyline that was much different. Especially considering the original trailers for the game were not even accurate to gameplay. I mean, ya’ll even said Ellie was going to be the only playable character in the game when you were first developing it, so I guess that was either a lie or you changed your mind, but either way, poorly executed.

Personally I feel like any of the fans could have written a more comprehensible and well organized game in their sleep. I think the message of the game that hate and revenge get you nowhere would have been much more well received if you had given the fans time to dive into the story a little before throwing Ellie out into the thick of it. Why didn’t we get to see more about life in Jackson? Why wasn’t Ellie’s relationships with HER BEST FRIENDS not shown more? Why would you kill Joel in the FIRST FREAKING HOUR OF THE GAME??? Don’t get me wrong, I think killing Joel was an essential part of Ellie’s character arc, but the way this was all gone about was dreadful. It’s like you took the original characters and watered them down to a milk toast version of themselves that would be more commercially palatable. Oh my god, and Abby’s storyline! How could I forget? Why would you have people play as Abby for a majority of the game? I’m sorry was this supposed to be all about her? You could have easily given Abby her own game. Hell I would have played that! But no, all you wanted to do was keep fans guessing the whole way through the game. Around every corner a new twist you never expected. You wanna know why we didn’t expect some of those twists and turns, because they made the game intolerable. They didn’t make any sense! From Ellie’s TWO opportunities to kill Abby, to her leaving Dina after they made a life together, even Tommy’s lack of understanding for Ellie not wanting to go after Abby anymore (but then still going after her for some reason after she spent the whole game trying to keep Dina, like wtf??). I mean, wasn’t Ellie the one who had to convince Tommy to go after Abby in the first place? Why the flip between characters? To create parallels?? Crap. Absolute crap.

I’m sure there are people out there who appreciate the game, but I am not one of those people, and I encourage you to wait until this game goes on clearance to play it. DO NOT waste your money, borrow a copy from a friend if you really wanna play it that bad. Naughty Dog and Neil Druckman do not deserve your hard earned cash for this absolute garbage heap of a game. Kudos to the people who worked hard and put real passion and effort into this game, I’m sorry you had to see something with so much potential get ruined by someone without vision. I’m looking at you Neil. Way to blow.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is to The Last of Us fans, what The Last Jedi is to Star Wars fans. Critics love it because it is "unexpected" but fans of the original game hate it because it spoils and undermines all that was good about the first game. The developer cared more about "subverting expectations" than they did about creating a game that people will enjoy playing. The first game was heart wrenching, touching, depressing, empowering and unexpected all at the same time while still being enjoyable. I finished the game wanting nothing more than to find out more about what happened to Joel, Ellie, Tommy and the world. Then when I finished Last of Us 2 I was left feeling defeated and hoping that I could just forget I ever played it. Instead of showing us how Joel and Ellie's relationship developed and grew over they years, you get to sit by while Joel is murdered while Ellie is forced to watch. The developer tries so hard to make you look at things through someone else's eyes that you barely get to enjoy the characters that we came to see. At one point you are even required to play as the villain in a boss fight against the best character in the game. The game is not without its highlights. The graphics and detail are stunning. I am so impressed with the developer's dedication to inclusivity with the accessibility settings that allow as many people as possible enjoy the game. I think more games should follow that trend. But the reason we play games like Last of Us 2 is the story that it tells, and the story is the part of this game that is truly unforgivable. Expand

As others have stated this is a beautiful piece of art. Visually, I agree that this game is beautiful. However, visuals aren't everything. The statement that I hear most often repeated is that this game's message is "revenge is bad". Okay, so with that being said, this game wants to send a positive message like "embrace forgiveness"? No.
Then I hear that this game is edgy and an emotional gut punch. However, the writer Neil Druckmann seems to contradict that when he reveals his motivations for the story were inspired by a heanius act that he witnessed in his youth and his dark thoughts afterward. So you want to depict in your artwork how disgusted you are by humanity? That's okay with me, however, I won't be purchasing it.
In closing, I'd like to say that I believe someone's personal and philosophical beliefs marred what should have been a meaningful conclusion/continuation of a beloved franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who has played the first game many times over, it's truly heartbreaking to see this game do what it did. It took everything that the first game was good at and s*** on it.

I'll start with the pros, because despite being a trainwreck of a game there still are some. The game is visually STUNNING. I found myself at times stopping and looking around at the environments, marveling at such a beautifully crafted world. The facial animations, again, phenomenal. Voice acting? Top tier. The gameplay was something I found myself tolerating, if you've liked the first game's gameplay it's pretty much the same. Loot, craft, kill.

But oh boy, the cons. The problem with this game was not just the borderline nausea inducing storyline but the way it was handled too. Anything that anyone would have had a problem with was snuck into the second half of the game. Naughty Dog knew that if they told players upfront about what the story is NO ONE would have bought it. They kill a beloved character that they forced everything to think had a central part in the story IN THE FIRST TWO HOURS! When he dies you haven't even left the tutorial stage of the game. I don't think his death is bad, don't get me wrong. But they falsely advertised this game as a continuation OF HIS STORY. On top of that the decisions he made leading up to his death was just lazy writing. The character in question would have never gotten into the situation that resulted in his death had he been written the same way he was in the first game. AND THAT'S THE THEME OF THE GAME. All the characters we knew and grew to love all act so out of character here, they all make decisions they never would have. This game requires a lot of buy in from the player, you have to buy in this character would do this, you have to buy into the story and the second you start questioning ANYTHING you're sucked out of the charade that Naught Dog created. It's a load of lazy story writing. ON TOP OF THAT YOU SPEND HALF THE TIME PLAYING AS A CHARACTER YOU DONT CARE ABOUT HUNTING DOWN THOSE THAT YOU DO. It's just a load of bs. The reason I am so goddamn angry about it, is that they gave us a glimpse at what a real sequel could have been. The flashback in which Ellie and Joel went to the museum? That was eff'n perfect. Make that the whole game and it's a straight 10/10, it would've been perfect. Give me more of that game, not this revenge gore p0rn and Neil decided he wanted. When you play as Ellie, all you experience is the devolvement of a beloved character, and the story is clearly set up in a way that is: Ellie bad, Abby good. (My example for this is the dog. As Ellie you are FORCED, as in HARD SCRIPTED INTO THE GAME, WITH NO OTHER OPTIONS BUT TO KILL THE DOG. And immediately after you are playing as Abby and suddenly you're playing fetch with the dog. Once again: Ellie bad, Abby good.) I don't give two ***** about Abby Neil, I know you wanted to write in that scene where you got some, but damn this was not the way to go.

It's almost as if every single writer at Naughty Dog had their own idea as to what should happen, who the villain should be, who the hero should be, and they couldn't decide so they mashed it into one game and shoved it down the player's throats with Sony cheering them on.

Naughty Dog said that their goal for the game was to create an unpleasant and merciless experience, well the sure as heck did that and then some. This game is an excruciating experience, it's not fun at all. There are very little redeeming qualities and I'm ashamed to have spent money on this steaming pile of ****. If you really want to see the game for yourself, just watch a youtube play through of it, there's tons by now. Don't give this man, and his studio, your money and time, because they will take it and make a third game that is even worse. And don't listen to the Sony fanboys who will praise this game to high heavens because they really aren't hearing the other side. Is this game a 0/10? Absolutely not. But it sure as heck isn't 10/10. Even 6/10 would be too high in my opinion.

Do yourself a favor, don't buy it.

    Pros
Very entertaining and engaging gameplay, good improvements from the first game
    Undeniably amazing graphics
    Great performances like always
    Great music
Good level design for the most part, once again good improvements from the first game.

    Cons
    Unlikeable characters
    Poor pacing
    Terrible story

The game and trailers try to use shock value to make the Joel death scene that much more painful to watch, using shock value tactics and intentionally changing what occurs in trailers further proves this. The issue is not the fact that Joel died it's how he died, by trusting a stranger and giving away sensitive information to then be brutally beaten. This completely goes against his character and feels very lazy. Furthermore, I can't begin to understand how the writers thought that players would feel compassion for a new character (Abby) that brutally beat a character from the first game that everyone loved (Joel) who just saved her life. Any attempt to try to create compassion for Abby was a failure and was very forced. There are many other glaring issues with Abby's part including the trip to the hospital to get medical supplies which was very drawn out and pointless, and her part in general being much longer than it had to be. The ending was atrocious, Ellie left her comfortable life with her girlfriend to track down Abby(again), to then fight her (again), and then let her go. After killing all of Abby's friends, losing friends of her own and just getting her fingers bitten off did Ellie have a cliche realization that " Revenge bad" " Forgiveness good" I'm sorry what? I would have much preferred for the game to have ended at the farm with Ellie, Dina and the baby.

Lots of people are giving this game a bad score for ‘sjw’ opinions and just giving gamers a bad rep.

The problem with this game isn’t ‘politics’, it is that it is boring. The game has not much gameplay, gameplay is very simple (like ‘walk over here, click this button, and you did it) and is heavy on the cutscenes. You could basically gut the gameplay and made this a streaming/TV special

You kill Joel in 2 hours and replace him with a character we don’t even know or have any real backstory too who the fu** hired these writer wtaf. But all right I get it make something new keep us on our seats and guessing but at least make a Coherent story and character arc. Lastly I have one final thing to say to naughty dog studios , why are you making games political.Honesty what did you think would happen especially in today’s current political climate. Your literally putting a wedge between you and half or your customers. Keep your political views out of video games plain and simple. You know most people probably more than 3/4 of the people have nothing against lgbt persons and don’t mind them being in a game as main characters but to say that we are all racist, bigots for not liking the Obviously Flawed Story and your use of editing to make it appear that we would be playing with Ellie and Joel again is wrong and probably illegal. Final words if naughty dog does nothing about ND and there writing team I guarantee you will no longer get any of my business. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I took a lot of time to reflect on this game. I even went back to playing the first game again to make my feelings more genuine for the TLOU2 and I ended up being more upset towards this new game. People loved LTOU because of the father/daughter bond that Joel and Ellie had. There were better character development and story that was seamless while in TLOU2 it relies on shock and "surprise". The overall message of the story was entirely predictable and by the end of it, I just felt upset that all of this pain and suffering was because the writer's message was something so obvious. Revenge is bad and it can consume you if you do not do something about it. They killed Joel in such a terrible way just as a catalyst to get this predictable revenge story going. What a complete and utter waste.

This game also does a lot of manipulation to make you feel for Abby and make Ellie look bad but it doesn't work. There is a scene where you kill Abby's dog as Ellie as if you are supposed to care when just before you were killing DOZENS of dogs prior. You are supposed to feel bad for killing someone when you just brutally slaughtered tons of other people right before. The game contradicts its self constantly and it ruins the immersion. You can see the puppeteer instead of the puppet constantly. I really disliked a lot of the side characters as well like Mel for example. Why is a pregnant woman going to the front? How irresponsible do you have to be? Also, they even changed a lot of the story like how Joel killed the Doctor. They not only changed his skin color but made the operating room look clean. In TLOU1 the doctor has dark skin and the operating room is moldy and gross. Made me realize how shoehorned this story was. Joel and Tommy are also a lot less smart for the sake of moving the plot for Abby by being way too trusting and telling everything about themselves. These guys didn't get this far from being this stupid.

Let's talk about the good. The game has without a doubt amazing graphics and animations. The music and sound design are tremendous and it does a great job of creating a terrifying atmosphere when going up against the clickers. I loved exploring the map and having conversations about what happened to the unfortunate. Combat was nice as well and I got a kick out of smashing people's head in with Abby. Probably the only thing I enjoyed while playing as her.

Overall it was a decent game but I can play other games if I want better Graphics or gameplay. I wanted to play TLOU2 for the story and NaughtyDog did not deliver. IMO it was a wasted opportunity to do something better and it could have been handled so much better.

Who in their right mind would clear a very late term pregnant woman go into a combat/front line mission and then be surprised when they get injured. Don't get me wrong the combat and leveling have been decently improved, but not enough to keep me completely invested in the story. The score (when you can hear it) is phenomenal. First - I absolutely hate that you travel back and forth in time and people through the whole game. At times i lost track on what the story mission was about.
Having to play almost half the game as Abby, was extremely annoying - i person i disliked through the game.I bought this game because the trailers led me to believe that this was a new story with Joel and Ellie, going on adventure again...how disappointing?
The homosexual feel throughout the game (not that i have anything against peoples sexual choices - just not something i can relate to) was annoying too.
The endless cutscenes with Abby and Owen were dead dead boring and uninteresting.
Very few characters (unlike the first one, The brothers, Bill, Tess etc) were interesting or had something interesting about them.
Manny was one of the few with a little spark, and wit - but he was wasted, without Abby ever using one second to feel sad over her losing a good friend.
The ending is a no ending, I'm sure ND already have a part 3 planned...im done with this series. I can play tlou 1 over and over again - but I'll never play tlou 2 again.
The visual and gameplay are of course outstanding, some of the best I've seen - but i buy these types of games because of the story - and storytelling have been a huge problem the last 10-15 years in games. Even the last uncharted, was a thin cup of tea storytelling wise - half the game is just the endning in one endless long mission. There are not many left who can tell a good story left in the gaming industry - Rockstar Games...Ubisoft - the can if they will,

All the so called "religious" people in this game are religious fanatics who want to kill and torture a transgender person. As if all religious people from every religion were like that but apparently after the world ended, ended all types of non-marxist stereotypes of religious people and religious groups. There are no liberals among them. None of them loves others. All of them are basically New Testament era pharisees. This game is discriminating against religion and religious people. It also discriminates religious liberals when it claims that only hateful bigots survived the end of the world. All the "good guys" are non-religious people and I'll say this again, none of the "religious" people in this game help the transgender person against others of their own group. What adds up to the irony of that all was the claim of the developers of the game to say that there's moral ambiguity because they picture both the villains background and the Ellie's background. But as faithful Marxists the development team forgot that even after the end of the world there would be people who joined the religious fanatics but then disagreed with them but for one reason or another decided to not obey their rules as strictly. This has been shown to happen in religious groups in the past and is happening in many western countries today. What I described happened during the 16th century in Germany. Google Martin Luther. Yeah, after the end of the world only liberals can think for themselves according to Naughty Dog. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Leveldesign, Cutscenes and Gameplay are as awesome as they were with its predecessor, and the racial diversity and LGBT representation were written so well into the game, that they - for the most part - do not feel overly forced or on the nose, but the good part stops right there. the story is so incredibly flawed that it cannot be more than a four. There are several weird plotholes that made absolutely no sense to me, like joel’s stupidity leading to his death, or the fact that the people hunting joel for ruining the cure don’t take ellie with them to at least try something with her immunity. there has to be more than one doctor alive.
But the biggest problem ist the arrogant idea to manipulate the player into liking abby by having to play as her for 40 percent of the game. There was no coming back from torturing joel to death after he saved her live. I just straight forward despised her for the whole game and felt disgusted to play her. And the way the tried it was too obvious and so pushy it was kind of insulting to the player. That really ruined the whole game for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dissapointment all the way. Everything you love about the first game, gets thrown out the window. The graphic in the game was beautiful and the gameplay feels the same as the first game which is good. I feel the tense when encountering humans or clickers. Sound design was amazing, love the atmosphere. These elements of the game, i enjoyed.

However, the big problem i had with this game is the narrative. It is force. It is disconnected. It is just a frustrating journey overall. In one of the early trailers that ND released, it made us think that Joel was going to accompany Ellie, but that was not the case in the final game. It is replaced with Jessie. That is just misleading.

I did not look at the early leaks, so I am going into this game not knowing what to expect. But, at some point before starting the game, I was preparing for the worst for what if Joel died. And that moment arrived, I did not expect it to be that early in the game. Abby killed Joel. I feel like Joel's character got dumb down, as oppose to the first game. It just doesn't make sense how him and Tommy just calmly trust Abby and her group. Sure, I get it, the whole theme of this game is hate and Joel particularly is not a good guy either. In the last of us world, there is no good people, everyone is scummy. But this is like a spit on the face and disrepectful towards the character whom you spent the most in the first game.

So, after Joel's death, you play as Ellie. You want revenge on Abby. So, you went on this journey searching for Abby and killing of her friends along the way. But you never got to meet her as Ellie. Instead, Abby's the one who came and found Ellie in the theatre and killed Jessie and Tommy was helpless and just right when the scene was about to end, the climatic moment. It cuts off.

Then, the game wants to introduce you to Abby, the girl whom you hated so much and want revenge on. The game wants you to get to know her side of the story in the last of us world. It was just frustrating playing as the character where the game makes you hate her in beginning and her story just keeps on dragging for a long and ardous experience. I got bored of it and it made me wanting to power through the game just to get to that climactic moment, which i did. After all that, I still did not care for Abby character. The two scars character, did not care at all.

The second half of the game (Abby) was just excruciating to play. It is not fun at all. I just want to finish the story so badly and it keeps on dragging. The tons and tons of flashbacks storytelling are just horrible. It ruins the flow of the story. The ending of the game, you did not get what you wanted. You were left with this empty void. Abby wins, Ellie lose everything in the end, even her two fingers. The character who you rooting for from the first game and waited for 7 years, loses everything. I guess, this part 2 is the downfall of Ellie in this story. It is paving its way for a possible part 3 where Ellie will rise again, maybe.

Overall, the tense gameplay carried the game i would say. I did not like the flow of this game. A painful and disjointed storytelling. The layers on layers of flashbacks are just fillers of time wasting. This game is a rollercoaster where the people plummets to their deaths at the end of the ride. It's not a fun game and ND achieved that.

The Last of Us Part 2, is a game imposed by SONY and ND, with the intention of enriching this post-apocalyptic world by laying the foundations of the series for HBO, nobody asked for this kind of experience with graphics and animations that are extremely realistic that It differs with a very loose script that is reflected in a story with so many gaps in the plot and full of tricks that forcibly trying to manipulate you and make you believe that you are facing something great, but at the same time that you add hours of gameplay, you realize It is built in the cheapest style possible, rewarding you only with the best it has, the flashbacks.

They present you with little elaborate characters, flat and without credible attitudes, in the end, the Studio manages to destroy Ellie, Joe and Tommy, who do not behave rationally and do not respect the personalities established in the first installment.

This game is totally the opposite, you cannot say it’s a master piece to most of the people who think the story is garbage. For me I had no problem with the lesbian relationship or the transgender character from Lev, for me it would be so weird if Ellie was straight, but I feel like I didn’t even need to bring that up because it didn’t cross my mind that it would be a problem.

The fact they disrespected Joel in the way he went out is like the writer hated him, I was pissed he died but if they did it to shock us and create an amazing journey of revenge, it didn’t work at all.

Last note, it’s like Iron Man dying in Infinity War and Thanos torturing him and ripping off his limbs, then ending the film there and End Game didn’t exist.

I waited 7 years for this and I’m just gutted with what they came up with, also I would love to play it again I absolutely loved the gameplay and graphics, but I can’t bring myself to play as that **** Abbey. I got a refund from my game as I won’t play it again and plus it was false advertising to play as Joel.

-characters are bad and even annoying/hated
    -ending is bad
-game is too long with a run time of 20+ hours
-long boring sections of the game
    -lack of character development
    - old characters from the original are completely different and not much time is used to explain the change in these characters
    - the game makes Joel an idiot in order to kick off the story. This is a man who has been able to detect ambushes before. Someone who you have to earn his trust but this game just has his get ambushed and trust complete strangers. Joel has been surviving in this Apocolypse for 25+ years and this is how he dies SILLY.

That's my opinion and yes I have played the game and it's still Sh*t

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The problem with the last of us part II it is not related with it's gameplay mechanics nor with the visual aspect of it. It is solely related with the choice made from the writers for the storytelling. Beyond the ludonarrative dissonance (because videogames) and the obvious political agenda (and which is perfectly fine for me, beyond the fact that they use a shallow use a trans character for the mere fact of being trans). It is the way that naughty dog builds to tell us a story the real problem of this game. Disrespectful treatment of the former main character, and the way that they erase the deep personality of Ellie, becoming a being just driven by revenge. Abby plays the same role a caricature of a person which main goal (to kill Joel) and the way this goal is achieved, is beyond belief in this or in a postapocaliptic world. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've loved every Naughty Dog game up to this point. What the heck happened here?

Story: a predictable tale of revenge. Ellies character is ruined and Joels killer is given half the game. Theres is no connection to either Abby or Ellies choices. The second half of the game is ultimitaly about fighting transphobes... it's cringe indusing.

Half the game is all about making Abby a likable person, but why? Revenge is bad, we get it! What about the hundreds of men and women that are killed during the rest of the game? What about their families and friends? Are they gonna get revenge too? The plot is paper thin.

The first game was all about "show don't tell", but this game has flashbacks after frickin flashbacks, because the plot isn't effective enough on it's own. None of the Joel and Ellie cutscenes made me emotional, and I ended up hating all of the main characters by the end.

Gameplay: great. Gets repetetive thou, and more than half the game is cutscenes or walking. 5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some positives but the game was rarely enjoyable - And not for the reason being publicised (joels death).

In of itself killing off the previous games main character isn't the worst decision in the world. However, the story line and forced nature of the plot when it comes to 'educating' the audience on the rights & wrongs of revenge, and the morality behind why we should be inclusive borders on ridiculous / boring.

A character from the 1st game (tommy) had a ton of potential to be further explored, but was rarely seen. When he was on screen tended to be portrayed as wrong in any given circumstance, and generally unimportant - The same could be said for new character jesse, who it also seemed had a ton of potential but was miss-used.

The introduction of Abby as a playable character is an interesting concept, but in execution was awful (imho). It killed the narrative structure (both times) JUST as I thought the story might be recapturing the intensity and emotion of the 1st game. The voice actor did a decent job but her characters dialogue & attitude did nothing to make me warm to her.

When it comes to gameplay the introduction of being able to crawl helps to improve stealth mechanics, as does the ability to jump for escaping certain situations. Other than this the gameplay felt identical to the 1st game - my one sore spot when it came to the last of us 1, as it is far too 'clunky' specifically when shooting & swapping weapons etc.

The selection of weapons on offer, as well as the shooting mechanic itself is extremely lackluster. Ammo is scarce to the point you are lucky if you have enough to win a skirmish without running laps around the map to regain a stealthy position - Its then Rinse and repeat with another 4-6 bullets.

Stealth kills are enjoyable and gritty as ever, on both the living and the dead, which brings me to my next point.

The most enjoyable fight was playing as abby in the hospital when you are confronted with a ridiculous bloater in an enclosed, but free flowing underground space - MORE OF THIS IS NEEDED. All in all there were some okay gameplay, and fantastic graphical improvements compared to the last of us 1, but when it comes to the general storyline and narrative choices i fail to think of a bigger disappointment.

Sometimes good, but never great - 4/10. In case I'm being overly critical here are some ratings I'd give other games:

    The last of us 1 - 9/10
    Days gone - 7.5/10
    Rdr2 - 9.5/10
    Gta 5 - 8.5 /10
    Horizon zero dawn - 8/10
    Dying light - 7 /10
    Far cry 5 - 6.5/10
    Far cry 4 - 7.5/10g

The Last of Us Part II is something that truly did not need to be made. It certainly is not the worst game ever, but too many times I felt myself asking, "why was this made? Just to be edgy?" It certainly is not the worst game ever, but too many times I felt myself asking, "why was this made? Just to be edgy?" Yeah the social commentary stuff is a bit too pushed in your face at times, but the real problem to me with the game is that it is clearly trying too hard. Adding more blood and guts to a game doesn't make it more shocking because most gamers are fairly desensitised to that today and I'm all for female protagonists, but Naughty Dog really ruined Ellie and in regards to Abby she is downright just not fun or engaging. Also Naughty Dog's game design is really starting to stretch thin such as, "oh the camera is now slowly and forcefully panning behind me suddenly I wonder if I'm going to be smacked in the face from an enemy from just outside this narrow corridor!" Plus, my god this company needs to decide if it wants to make a movie or a video game by this point. Even in the Uncharted series they do try so hard to keep you immersed in these cinematic elements only for the player to misstep once or hit a dodge button (the dodge button is an absolute joke in this game, its timing window is REALLY strange) and BAM instant death... I mean sure that's fine once or twice, but after you do it four or five times you are LITERALLY pulled out of the cinematic action and are now jaded to the rest of the scene setup... My score of 4 out of 10 solely goes to the graphics, which are INCREDIBLE. Too many times I thought I was actually watching live actors. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First I will say if you enjoyed the gameplay from the first last of us game then it’s more of the same here. The game has about the best graphics on ps4 next to red dead redemption 2. The gunplay is fast paced and the enemy AI is more smart than last game unless you mess with the accessibility options, the use of the new skill trees are interesting slightly but it’s more of the same as last game you collect supplements for upgrades for both abby and Ellie. So if you enjoyed the last of us 1 gameplay then you will enjoy the gameplay the enemies or infected are a little more intimidating. Where the game goes wrong is it’s story they try to force you to like a character that just is not an enjoyable character not because of the muscles or anything but because they went about the story in the wrong way. I think that if they would have been better off at the very least putting the story in a different order and also gave you a choice at The end of the game but all the characters were so out of character. Joel and Tommy would not have done what they done no matter what they pretty much told abby and her group everything but their blood type. This is where the story fails I had a hard time even finishing the game I played for a good 30 hours and uninstalled the game twice and am trying to trudge the A second play through just for trophies but it’s probably my least favorite naughty dog game of all time.

Good gameplay and nice picture, but a terrible plot and an even more terrible continuation of one of the best games. For the sake of this game, I bought a PS4 again, but at least I tried to play those exclusives that I missed

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
