Characters I waited 7 years to re-engage with, only for their lives and their lore to be all but thrown away.

No matter how impressive the game-play (largely unchanged from the first), the graphics and the audio, these strengths couldn't save the sequel from the arrogant, thin-skinned, political-driven "writers" and decision-makers at the top. A solid 4/10, earned entirely by those in charge of animation, world design, and Gustavo Santaolalla.

Time to pretend this sequel no longer exists.

Para The last of us part 2, no se consigue adecuadamente. Y creo que para muchos ha sido una de las razones más importantes, ya que para tantos usuarios como yo. I feel like it has to be said, but this isn't a good game(anyone trying to say it's a 10/10 clearly is trying to sell something or impress someone), it isn't a bad game either (certainly not a 0/10, anyone who says that isn't being realistic). I have recently finished the game and there are mixed feelings. On the one hand it is very clear to see how amazing the graphics are, the voice acting, the animations, sound designs, it very easy to see the work that was put into it. However that makes it even more painful when you have to slog through the terrible writing (I don't give a damn about the controversially aspects; killing off Joe doesn't mean the game is bad and having LGBQTA representation doesn't automatically make this a good game.). There are huge plot holes in the story, the pacing is off, the character's motivation, drive and resolution it's just not fleshed out enough. It's as if Neil Druckman wanted to stuff a bunch bold ideas and concepts into this one game, but didn't want to spend the time building the characters and settings, to actually flesh these ideas out, which leave a lot of half finished ideas just sitting out, for the gamer to try and put together on their own. Which is incredibly disappointing seeing as story was the strongest aspect in the Last of Us. The only thing I can think of that could explain this large discrepancy in story writing quality; based on my research the changes was in Neil Druckman, the original Last of Us had a large writing team who helped him make the story what it was, they helped solidify the good ideas and they quickly cut away his bad ideas. However in the Last of Us 2 the team has been more hesitant to try and correct him as they feared "voicing their concerns with the story" would lead to their termination. That issue clearly shows in the erratic storytelling in this game. The only good thing I can say that came from this game is that recent reporting have shown that a lot of employees have left Naughty Dog, which means those amazing animators, voice actors, sound designers, graphic artists and even the writers who were too afraid to speak up against Neil Druckman, will be working on other(hopefully), better written games. And Abby being the saint is a hard point to sell even if you use devil's advocate. I liked it when I played for the first time giving it an 8 or a 9. After listening to the good reviews and bad reviews I've came to a conclusion this story is not the same direction as the last of us. This feels like a dark brutal story and just throwing Joel and Ellie in the mix and has a bleak experience. This makes batman v superman look like a kids play Revenge is bad is so played out. Even Kratos in the new god of war got to live and have a family again a second chance at peace with his new son Atreus if some nameless person kills him fir good no one else would like it because it's bad writing and pacing Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ellie hates Joel because He killed the cicadas at the end of the first part. Abby hates Joel, because he killed the father of the surgeon. Now Ellie hates Abby. You have understood that violence begets violence. Neil Drakman says that Joel is to blame, but if you remember the end of the first part, there Ellie was unconscious after a massacre with infected and cicadas come, which knock out Joel, put Ellie on the table and want to operate. Again, Neil Drakman says that only Abby's father could have made the medicine, but he died. If you remember the agreement between Joel and Marlin that he takes Ellie to the hospital, and they give him weapons, but as soon as he came to the hospital, the cicadas were ready to kill him, but Marlin intervened and he was told that he would be released, without guns of course. The cicadas could explain everything, give Ellie a choice.. But all the blood is from the cicadas.
Destroyed as for me the normal ending of the first part, the fact that Ellie found out the truth in the hospital, was depressed and then was an ordinary person, who did not know that she was imunna. But then Joel plays Golf with Abby, realizes that he was still dear to her and goes to kill Abby's friends. In the first part, Tommy was a very good character and kind, but in the second part, he is the complete opposite, promises Ellie that they will go together to take revenge, but secretly leaves. The plot is so straightforward - she remembers everyone in the room and slowly kills everyone and everything is so simple that no new name will appear among her enemies. Then comes the third day when Abby is aiming at Ellie and the game is running out of time and we are already behind Abby. Dogs and Cultists howl at each other, and why ? Because Abby doesn't care what or why and just ignores it. She doesn't care that the dogs torture the cultists, she doesn't care that the Cultists kill the dogs, and so it looks ridiculous that the Renegade Cultists save her and she gets so attached to them that she kills the dogs, but the dogs have saved her life more than once. Why she decided to throw the dogs, where there is everything and go with these cultists-and did not explain normally. She doesn't even try to understand their feelings, they don't mean any harm, and Abby goes and cuts them all out. She is loyal to her Cicada friends, but she also wanted to kill Denny. We don't know much about Abby's friends. Three are killed off-screen, Nora in a couple of frames, Leah too, and Manny is just a cable. What do they have in common, why are they loyal to Abby ? Vaguely. Abby has no character, no motivation, no conflation while playing for her. All Abby's desires and conflicts end during the prologue, when she played Golf with Joel. There is a love triangle between Abby, Mel and Owen, but until the evening of the third day, it is not connected with the events that are happening at all. Krch for 10 hours of playing for Abby is terrible because it is very, very boring.. Abby does not kill Ellie and says that she got out of her eyes, but Ellie still finds Abby in trouble and will go to battle, win, forgive and let go on all four sides.
It would be better if the first part was the last game on tlou.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Naughty Dog for me is always one of the top game creators/developers out there. I've loved every game they have created up until The Last of Us 2.

I wanted to like it, I knew that there was no way Joel would survive this game (I just didn't know at whose hands... or club... he would be ended). But I played because I truly enjoyed the dynamic that Ellie and Joel had together. But this game is not about Ellie and Joel; its about Ellie, her new group of friends, and an 'antagonist' searching for vengeance.

At the end of this day this game is a revenge story (I LOVE revenge stories). But as is typical in revenge, you don't come out the other side the same. This game saw the mutual destruction of both parties, both virtually alone and crippled in the end.

My issues are with the characters in this story. You have Ellie who is uneven throughout. She will kill tens of hundreds of people without emotion but then after one or two certain deaths she loses control.... then proceeds to kill a few hundred more. Some lives had more meaning than others of course, so its not completely nonsensical, but it was a bit confusing.

New character's are continually introduced and its as if the writers are screaming at the top of their lungs "CARE ABOUT THIS CHARACTER!" but, I just didn't. It took an entire game of the original for me to care about either Ellie or Joel, I'm not just simply going to care about a random guy who dated Ellie's girlfriend and shared some funny moments with us (sorry Jesse).

Now the obvious issue for me was playing as Abby for half the game. I get the idea, the thought is that you want to understand the motivations of the 'antagonist' (I'm using quotations because the antagonist truly depends on your point of view in this game). The problem is, I understood the motivations the second they were looking for Joel, you know the motivation is revenge for friends/family. This again ties back to the writers wanting you to care about Abby and I just didn't. She in the matter of about 45 mins crushed the skull of the character I'd enjoyed so much from the original (and being hopeful to see the conclusion of his story for years).

I want to just take minute to say it wasn't all bad... The graphics are some of the best I've ever seen, visually the game is stunning on my PS4 Pro/4K television. The gameplay is just as fun as its predecessor with some new fun twists and puzzles which you know Naughty Dog will excel at, and the emotions the game makes you feel is truly unique. There are moments you almost need to quit playing because its so heavy and weighs on you.

Here are my final thoughts as I see the game...

The thought of doing a sequel was probably overly ambitious. They should have had you play as Abby for basically the entire game. I think my disappointment is because I was expecting this to be all about Ellie and Joel, this needed to not sell the player on being Ellie or Joel at all. I think having Abby be the protagonist who is seeking vengeance for her father, being hunted by Ellie across the country was a better choice. Then at the end, they could have switched back to Ellie and even kept their ending. There are too many fluff characters, so many I could hardly keep track. I think Dina, Owen, & Mel should have been the focus as far as side characters go.

I want to just mention that I applaud Naughty Dog for making a game with strong female characters, there aren't nearly enough of those out there. I'm not in the group of people who disliked this game for other motivations.

I had high expectations for Naughty Dog with TLOU2, expectations they have earned with some fantastic games. This one for me missed the mark. I know many people still enjoyed this game and that's the beauty of art. I look forward to the next Naughty Dog adventure.

Gameplay: 5/10 puzzles a 4 y.o. could solve, the jump button is a joke, straight up boring most of the time.
Story: 0/10 characters are unlikeable, their decisions more than questionable, relationship building was something the first game did really well, this one doesn't at all.
Score: 4/10 This game isn't cannon for me, just a bad trip from Ellie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hate having to write this review because I was hoping for so much in this game after loving the first one and having played it for more than 5 times already.
I loved everything about the first one, the relationship between Joel and Ellie, the secondary characters such as Bill, Henry, Sam, Tommy, etc. They all felt real and added something to the story and helped to further expand and explain the world and the conditions in how they lived. Every character felt like it had a purpose in being there. The story was perfect in portraying how Joel had been affected by losing Sara and then how he started seeing Ellie as her chance as having a daughter again. The first game made me feel for the characters as well as leaving impressions on me, I actually got very sad at times and even cried a little at some.
As for the 2nd part none of that happened. I don’t mind that they killed Joel, what bothers me is the way they did it. It felt rushed and they spent a lot of the time trying to show him as a bad person, he was not a saint but also not as bad as they made him out to be. The side characters in this game really did nothing for me, none of them were memorable for me. My favorite side character would have to be either Lev or Jesse because they were the most develope of them, Lev actually had some background developed for him (the things he keeps telling Abby about his life), Jesse was a funny and not so serious guy. As for Abby’s friends I didn’t really care much about them except for Owen, he came out as one of the better guys by being human, I can’t recall any time he did anything macabre as Abby did, in fact he was the one that stopped Abby from further torturing Joel, he also started sympathizing with the seraphites late in the game. The other ones I don’t care about, Mel and Manny are the worst.

I had to replay the first game in order to better notice the differences between Ellie and Joel in the first and second game. In the first game Ellie was a funny, easygoing and sweet person but in the second one they made her a hate-able character, Joel (and Tommy) were smart in the first game and cautious whereas in the second they are really the opposite.
I didn’t like playing as Abby because I could feel from the get go how the game wants you to force her to like her by manipulating you, an example of this is the well known dog killing aspect, as Ellie you kill dogs and as Abby you pet and play fetch with dogs. Naughty Dog wants us to like Abby so much but I simply couldn’t like her, she was a prick for the entirety of the game except at the end with the seraphite kids, she never showed remorse for killing Joel or Jesse, and I could even see that she thought that she was right in her doing so. She’s such a despisable character. The game gives us less than 20 minutes of Joel, which was one of the reasons why the first game was extremely liked. They also deceived us in the trailers by making it look like we were going to play as Joel (horse ride doesn’t count), the marketing for the game was completely different in comparison to what we got (it almost seems like not even Naughty Dog was confident in what they were making so they thought of fooling us). They also said that Ellie was going to be the only playable character but then we get “introduced to Abby in the first hour of gameplay.

In terms of graphics and gameplay the game is amazing but the story is not. I think it could have been much better even with the same plot, just executed in a different way.

The ending was unsatisfying but not just because Ellie didn’t kill Abby, they never managed to get the point of “revenge leads to nothing” across, or whatever they wanted to say, it just leaves us with a sour experience. It’s clear how they wanted to destroy Ellie, they left her with absolutely nothing, meanwhile Abby gets to live a happy life with Lev (again she showed no remorse at all).

It saddens me that the game wasn’t good because I was really looking forward to it after the first one being one of my favorite games of all time. I wanted to like it so much but I just couldn’t.

I know I’ll get targeted as a bigot but say whatever you want, I don’t mind the LGBTQ+ in the game, I think it’s good to include it to some extent. Remember, we’ve known about Ellie since the Left Behind DLC and that was also universally appraised as the first game.

    Spoiler Alert !!

    Spoiler Alert !!!

Joel f**ked the whole world to save Ellie. Almost everyone, if not all, projected the dead daughter’s image on Ellie when Joel was stepping out of the hospital. It was not justified yet reasonable for Joel to kill the last person of Fireflies. While controlling Joel walked through the game, all I thought was to save the little girl, she was just like my daughter, and I could not bear to lose a daughter again.

All the characters that I had built with strong bonds in the Episode one were so broken in this Part II. I really wish the time could be stoped when Joel and Ellie were visiting the museum, when she putted up the astronaut helmet, when the rocket launched. Yet I had to push forward the story. If it was inevitable, then Joel deserved a better death. He could die a hero, instead of being tortured and butchered as an animal by Abby who was nearly survived from the Infectors and was save by Joel. How could a player invest empathy to Abby in the second part of the game when the first part the game was deliberately designed to kill her, especially after she killed Joel in such a brutal way. Yet you have to play Abby as the main character of the game for about 10 hours. NaughtyDogs demonstrated Abby’s misery and tried to provoke players’ sympathy towards her. That might be working when judged from players’ god viewpoint. However, Ellie did not know that part. Ellie did not know Abby’s reasons for killing, which made the final scene extremely uncomfortable in which Ellie let Abby go by the moment the later was almost drown, by the moment which costed Ellie’ peaceful life with Dina and JJ, by the moment Ellie started a new revenge while players had have somewhat accepted the fact that the two girls all had miserable lives and both deserve to live. When I thought the game would be fine if it ended that way. The writer of the game sent Ellie out for another chasing for Abby. A chasing that actually saved Abby from local bandits and freed her from a death penalty. When I thought the two would help each other get out of the war zone, they fought against each other again. Ellie started the fight, Ellie was winning, and Ellie let her go again. WTF. What was the purpose of this piece of story? I killed thousands of people, including innocents, to find my enemy for a revenge, and when I have finally found the enemy and have the chance to avenge Joel’s death, I choose to let you go simply because the game said so, because the writer thought killing is not good. Then how about the lives I took on my way? The game did not provide any non-killing options for players to walk through the game peacefully. It actually explicitly exhibited the brutal scenario of killing, including bloody executions. That is absolutely a bullsh*t. In sum, the Part one led players to slaughter the world to save my little girl, and the Part two simply told you that you should not have saved the girl because you killed people. And killing is very very bad. The Last of Us Part II is the last of NaughtyDogs for me. I swear.

Graphically this game is an 11/10 but man the story sucks! I was actually ok with it up until you are forced to beat Ellie as Abby. I was trusting the game to come through as its a story is a marathon, not a sprint but they never delivered. I didn't want to play as Abby but understood where the game was coming from making me play as her and seeing her POV. I understand that and I do respect that. The game wanted me to see Abby as a human and understand her motives and not just be a one dimensional "bad guy". I did see her POV and I did understand her motives but that didn't change the fact that I hate her and want to play as Ellie again so I can kill her. The section with Abby dragged on WAY too long and when I was forced to "hunt" and then beat Ellie I almost turned the game off for good. I continued thinking that after all this Ellie would finally get her revenge but no, 30+ hours and no pay off. The game really expects me to hate Ellie and see her as the bad guy now? Not happening! You've taken one person I care about away in Joel and that was a bold move but I am not turning on Ellie. I was actually ok with Joel being killed if the premise was to exact revenge but you never get it. Abby gets to sail off into the sunset (almost literally) after she got her revenge but Ellie loses everything. You never really see Abby grow as a character and she never shows remorse for what she did to Joel. You see Ellie struggle with some of the things she has done, Mel especially, collapsing to the floor when she realises she just killed a pregnant lady but no such thing for Abby. In fact when she finds out that Dina is pregnant she says "good" and goes to slit her throat only being stopped by Lev.

The positives of this game is that it is visually stunning, just breathtaking at points and i did enjoy playing it but the story and disappointing, stupid unsatisfying ending ruined not just the game but the franchise. If they make a third game with Abby as the main protagonist (which im really worried they will) I wont be buying it. I feel so let down by how this game ended. 7 years I waited for this and its such a huge slap in the face.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

A LAIDE!

    Dommage...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m incredibly upset with this game. I loved the first one. It was amazing and I definitely recommend to anyone who owns a PS4. I was weary of a sequel as the first one didn’t need it but as each trailer released I got more and more excited. I knew very little about the leaks and after playing it I have to admit it wasn’t probably an honour to have this game spoiled. First off Joel dies in a completely disrespectful way to his character. Then it gets worse. About halfway through the game you play as Joel’s killer and you have to beat the living **** out of Ellie. And then it gets even worse as Ellie lets Abby go after murdering pretty much everyone in Seattle. The only reason I’m not giving this a lower score is because there are some good moments mainly the flashbacks with Ellie and Joel and the gameplay has improved also with some excellent level design but I seriously don’t recommend this game. Maybe if you can find it for under £20 or if it’s free on PS Plus in the future but yeah a bad game that’s very disrespectful to the first. Expand

The first half of the game is okay, but the second half is stupid, I won't spoil but they force us to play like 10 hours as a character that no one gives a **** about and I would say that's the worse part of the story. Now if you completly ignore the storyline and just focus on the gameplay, the game is really good on that point, its like the first game but 5 times better and the amazing amount of little details shows how much love has been put on this game. I just wish the storyline would not be garbage. Hey but who knows? Maybe Naughty Dog can still redeem themselves with a dlc? Or even a better version of factions multiplayer from the first game...

Oh yeah I almost forgot to mention how naughty dog lied to us in the trailers, if you expect the game to be like we see it in the trailers then you will be disappointed... Just know that Joel is not gonna have as a important role in the game as they made us think in the trailers.

"Last of Us: Part 2" is a poorly written narrative.

The first "Last of Us" game was phenomenal because of the overall experience. The concept, the gameplay, the characters, the fluid & naturally paced series of events, all contributed to what made the game such a sensation.

In "Last of Us: Part 2" There's no clear protagonist or antagonist. The dynamic of the game creates two main characters on opposing sides which they show through a series of jarring transitions that take you out of the immersive experience.

This creates a level of confliction and detachment from both characters that you never would have expected from a game who's predecessor crafted a story so well written you became emotionally invested in almost every character on screen.

At best it's a story of 2 women who's hearts grow cold and actions turn savage in a cruel unforgiving world. However, the journey to get to the story's resolution is unavoidably unsatisfying.

In the first "Last of Us" it was the journey of a man who once moved aimlessly through life, stumbling onto a mission to save the world. By transporting and protecting Elle he was instilled with a renewed sense of purpose and with it now had a reason to live. Clinging to this newfound reason to live he was ready to sacrifice anything to preserve it. "Without you, I'd surely lose myself".

"Last of Us: Part 2" said with every opportunity, "This is not the story you first fell in love with". So the entire game hinges on the concept of revenge and without it "the journey has no sense of PURPOSE".

So we as the audience are left thinking ".....well I sure hope she gets revenge then." But as soon as the thought crosses your mind the story shifts it's narrative to humanize the originally perceived antagonist to make you question the justification of revenge. Finally, you're left you realizing there are no good or bad guys, no heroes, no villains, no reason....to keep doing this.

So, in the end, you're left feeling empty because there was no point to any of the events you just played through.

This game does the "Last of Us" universe a disservice.

It's unavoidable to sense "They tried really hard to write an amazing story and missed the mark."

    It really is unfortunate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to give this game a positive review. When the leaks dropped and everyone was bashing it, I thought to myself, "It's Naughty Dog, they have a great track record. There's no way they messed up that bad". Boy was I wrong.

First off, visually, this game is beautiful. ND really gave it their all to make this world feel alive. Every NPC and dog you kill has a name and they do a great job at making you feel bad for killing these NPCs.

The gameplay gets very old and tedious. It's the same stealth focused, cover shooter from the original game. Some slight refinements, but nothing revolutionary. There were points where I was just sick of going through same room of infected over and over again. I just wanted to get to the next cutscene. The best fight encounters in the entire game for me were where the WLF and the infected were together. I had a blast setting off the Clickers and watching the two groups tear each other apart while I watched with glee. Besides that, the gameplay struggled to keep me entertained.

The story and pacing is where the game falls apart for me. Making us play as Abby for the second half of the game and get all her upgrades completely destroyed the game's pacing. ND spent the first 15 or so hours building up Ellie's story to its climax and and completely ruins it. I understand what ND was trying to do with the narrative, but I believe they could have definitely approached it better. They wanted us to relate with Abby and grow to like her, but made it impossible to do that after watching her beat a beloved character to death at the beginning of the game.

After awhile, I was just hate-playing the game. I had already sunk 18ish hours into the game, so I felt obligated to complete it. It wasn't a joy to play, I got sick of the gameplay loop rather quickly and the story was going a route which I didn't care for. I hope ND does better in their next title.

Pros: Technically it's a masterpiece. Sound, graphics are all amazing. What you'd expect from naughty dog.

    Cons :
    - They kill off a beloved character from the first game
    - People who like this game now think that main character who was killed is now a monster and evil, even though they built a good relationship with them and loved them in the first game. Like WTF?! - It seems whoever dislikes the game is now getting critisised by SJWs
    - It's manipulative
    - The game is heavily political and panders to stereotypes
    - The game is totally depressing

I've now stopped playing the game. Its not fun and is really down. I played Persona 5 afterwards and it made me laugh within 5 minutes, which is what I want from a game. Stay away from tlou2, I wish I did and I wish I hadn't had spent my money on this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After the outrage from spoiler leaks, I came into this game with lowered expectations. And I’ll say, there’s a lot to like about this game. Graphics are beautiful, combat is fun, and the enemy AI feels extremely realistic. But for me, a story driven game must deliver a great story, and can’t lean on those other factors to be great. The reason the first game was so successful is because the story was so well written. I have replayed the first game at least 15 times because it was just that good. But this games story is poorly paced and poorly written, that if there’s one part where you ever say to yourself “that character wouldn’t do that” you’re sucked out the story and it’s nearly impossible to get back in. Unfortunately for me, I thought there were a lot of character decisions that didn’t match the characters at all, and a lot of those decisions seemed to be obviously only made to advance the plot. So I was sucked out of this game early on and could never really get back into it. It’s sad to see a game that had so much potential and delivered on so many areas be torn down by sloppy writing. If the game wasn’t story based, it would be about an 8 of 10 for me. But because the story is the driving factor to play this game, I have to drop score to a 4 because I don’t feel any urge to ever replay this game again. Expand

The graphics and mechanics of the game are good, but they messed up with every single character. The story doesn't make any sense. It was a good idea but in practice it was trash. The ending was so bad and didn't make sense.

Don’t get me wrong, the graphics and the gameplay are very good and one thing I don’t believe gets enough credit is the music which is expertly crafted, however I feel it is hard to appreciate this given the state of the story. I understand what ND were going for but I don’t think they did it well. This game does not feel like The Last Of Us, it feels like an entirely different game. The story is full of many plot holes and suffers from poor writing, carrying nothing from the first game and making me think the developers did not realise what made the first game so good.

I also however appreciate the gameplay, graphics and soundtrack. I also think having lesbian characters in the game can be a help as many people will play this game but overall I am just very disappointed.to

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the first time I have felt the need to express my opinion online about a game that fell short of my expectations; like The Last of Us Part 2. With all my decades worth of gaming when I sat down to play The Last of Us in 2014, I had never been so emotionally connected to a story in a game and its characters. It left a lasting impression in the way it perfectly pulled me in to experience every hope, fear and gut wrenching sadness that Joel and Ellie did. It is the only game in my collection that I played more than once....4 times in fact, and each time I played was just as enthralling as the previous. It didn't achieve this with only it spectacular visuals, fun game play, haunting music, perfect voice acting....all of that would have been hollow without the superbly crafted story that brought everything else together. I needed to provide some context before I shared my thoughts about The Last of Us 2. I went into this game completely spoiler free. Trusting in the developers to open my heart once again to another chapter in a story that I didn't want to end. When credits rolled on this game was left wrecked emotionally... feeling akin to a pet I loved for 7 years was just put down. The first game left the player with something special and this game takes that away and snuffs it out. Again without knowing anything about 2 aside from the release trailers; I went into this expecting Joel to die in some way(it just made sense for the progression of the story); so I am not upset that he was killed. But the hows and the whys of his death felt so rushed and awkward. I doubt that I have anything to say that hasn't already been said about having to play the villain of the game when the story doesn't provide to any way empathize with her and see through the cloud of anger you are made to feel for the character. They light the fuse for the bomb in the most concocted and unbelievable manner, setting you on a path to revenge and then expect the player to have an epiphany in the last 10 seconds (translate to hours of game play) before the bomb goes off (getting said revenge) and stop to reflect on why the fuse was lit. Then to top it off when time catches back up the player is forced to beat down the last remaining shell of a character in the game they care anything for. I've spent a number of hours post Last of Us 2 trying to reconcile my thoughts and listen to both sides of opinions on the game and I have found things I can agree with on both sides. But at the end of the day... I have un-installed this game, will never look at it again, wish that I had never played it, and could never recommend to anyone that loved the first one to ever set eyes on it and especially not spend hard earned money on it. If a sequel is made I will not be buying it, unless their is an indication that the story is a re do; and this one never happened. But even then I don't feel that I can trust Naughty Dog the same way anymore. The promotional material for this game was extremely deceptive after now seeing the finished product. I truly believe that the vision of this game was drastically changed mid production and there is a Last of Us 2 in the ether that could have been, but was drowned (the way that the Villain should have been) before it could be fully realized. First of all I'm a big fan of the Uncharted series and the first game so I started this game thinking it would be another masterpiece. But this is not a story that you expect or wish for after playing The Last Of Us part I. In my opinion there isn't even a story. You just go to a city to take revenge on someone because that someone took revenge. That is the story. The game makes you love certain people, but also tries to let you hate them. Other people you hate, you are forced to love. Naughty Dog tried something different and for me they failed. They made a game that you don't like to play but it will keep you locked to your screen for almost 25 hours. In the second part of the game you just hope that it will soon be over so you can go back to what you think is the main story. Sadly enough that second part is half the game. So I loved the first 10 hours, was bored during the next 10 and ultimately I was depressed during the last 5. So if you are looking for a beautiful, well-made game with a non existing story that will give such intense feelings (good and bad) that you end up with a depression afterwards: buy The Last Of Us Part II Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted this game to be good, and I defended it before it came out. Now I just feel like an idiot for having spent 60$ on it. The SJW agenda is immense, and it absolutely does detract from the story. Gratuitous lesbian sex scenes along with completely unrelated storyline about a persecuted transgender character that clogs up hours of the game.

But that's not even why the game isn't fun. The combat is better than it was in the last game by far, but the writing is so self absorbed that it forgot it was a video game. You will barely be able to play it because the game keeps taking you out of the action to show you hourlong flashback sequences about characters you despise, but the writer thinks you should care about. The relationship between Joel and Elle in the first game developed naturally over the course of the campaign, while this story immediately goes "here is Dina, a bisexual Jewish woman who can tell you about the holocaust, please like her"

The pacing is the worst I've ever experienced in a game, and it makes the idea of a second playthrough torturous. Dont make the same mistake I did. Go buy a different game that's actually fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is a lot to be said both about this game and its stakeholders. It is indeed hypocritical for Neil Druckmann to claim that the game is intended to be divisive and yet cry afoul that people are not liking the game.

The game is to be praised for their amazing graphics and stunning environments, much like the previous game. However, the gameplay feels more repetitive and puzzles felt too simplistic. Moreover, much is to be said about the storytelling of the game.

The characters Joel and Tommy were reduced to a shell of their former selves. With almost 50 years of survival experience between themselves, it is uncharacteristic of Joel and Tommy to leave themselves vulnerable to strangers. At the start of the outbreak, Joel and Tommy leave a family with children on the roadside despite having room in their vehicle, showing how extremely cautious they are despite not knowing what's happening. Also, compare this with Joel's encounter with the "injured" Hunter in Pittsburgh, where he correctly assumed that the Hunter was faking his injury in order to ambush them. Living in settlements would not have reduced this caution. Maria almost shot her brother-in-law, despite Joel and Ellie claiming to not be a threat, only to be stopped by Tommy verifying Joel's identity. This plot hole could be seen as lazy storywriting, allowing the player to handwave Joel's reduced caution for plot.

The death of Joel is where the fanbase diverges. One side praises the game's dedication to subvert any expectations, another side laments the use of Joel's death being reduced for simple shock value. Contrast this with the use of Sarah's death in order to paint what kind of father and uncle characters Joel and Tommy are. How they are willing to sacrifice their own lives to protect those that they love.

As you continue from shock and anger from Joel's death, you start to sympathize with Ellie's quest for revenge, sharing her hatred and desire to avenge the death of Joel. The entire Ellie's arc makes you build up bloodlust for Abby's death. When the game tosses you into Abby's arc, now you're confused why you're playing as the "villain" of the story. At some points of the game, you "carelessly" let Abby die to appease that anger. Despite the game continuing to paint Abby in a positive light, the game fails to make me empathize with her character. The entire time I'm playing as her makes me want to go back to Ellie's story. When the game finally reveals that the surgeon killed by Joel was Abby's dad, I could not empathize with him even more. To see that the surgeon was more than willing to sacrifice another person's daughter, especially having a daughter of his own, it shows that if left in that scenario, he would also sacrifice Abby for the "greater good".

I felt that the the game should've ended with Ellie and JJ sitting at the farm, with both sides having lost and no clear winners. However, the third arc of relaunching Ellie's vengeance against Abby felt very unnecessary extension of the game in order to increase its runtime.

How would the game have been better told? I feel that if they started with Abby's arc first. Telling the narrative from Abby's perspective first would have garnered all the player's sympathy for her, especially after establishing that her father is an important character that was brutally murdered by a psychopath (whilst hiding the fact that the psychopath was indeed Joel). They could narrate that the killer's name was "Miller" and, while not revealing that it was Joel, allow the player to kill him without realizing it's Joel (they could make him look even scruffier or more rugged). This sets in the player's mind that they finally gave Abby's dad justice and has avenged his death.

Upon switching the game to Joel's arc, this arc will culminate with in his eventual death. However, the player has come to the realization of the horror that they ended up killing him in the earlier arc. The players justify that there are no good guys or bad guys in this world, they are only each good guys in their own perspective.

Ellie was disappointing as seeing that she never learned a lesson or realized that what she was doing is not what Joel would want her to do.
Have to say, the graphics and gameplay, (while not evolving from the first) were still incredible and fun to be a part of.

I have no issues with the graphics, the graphics, sound design, environments, Ai, all are beautifully crafted and designed, my flaws lie in the story, it felt rushed, poorly paced in places and Abby one of the playable characters, I struggled to sympathise with as she seemed to be comfortable with her fulfilled revenge, going as far as to slaughter her own men towards the middle climax at the theatre. She shows no conflicting emotions about her torturing of Joel. I feel if she had been fleshed out some more and shown to be a flawed Human being, then I would be rating this differently.
I expected a even greater follow up to the masterpiece of last generation, however I was left with a feeling of hopelessness and a conflicted message. For Abby she gets revenge, a new purpose by the end of the game, and will likely have new friends in the fireflies. She also seems satisfied with most she does, even going as far as to tempt an old flame away from his Pregnant Girlfriend. For Ellie she struggles and gets destroyed me tall, physically and figurately stomped emotionally as she struggles with the morality of her choices. And is left with a bittersweet memory of what could have been.

The marketing leading up to release had built my expectations to be an Joel and Ellie centred story. And It's false advertising to me, a Joel was in the game a total of an hour and 35 mins total.

Acting:10 Story:6 if the story was presented differently or maybe even completely different to the final product then maybe this would be higher. But for now I have decided to not buy anymore naughty dog games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are several issues wrong with The Last of Us part 2. I had just finished the game and even played the first in order to better grasp the differences. What is heard a lot is Joel "killed so many people and many are after him for his violent life. If you had actually played the first game, you would know that when encountering the hunters. Joel had explained he was on both sides just trying to survive for the past 20 years with his brother. The hunters were a murderous group that killed innocent travelers to simply rob them. I would hardly consider that Joel "wronging" people. Another mentioned fact is the vaccine, maybe it was an oversight by both creators of first and second game but I actually work health care, there is no vaccine for fungi, it has not been made feasible yet, as well as the fact that killing Ellie makes no sense because finishing a vaccine would entail the blood, not the brain, if that was the case look at any infected and use that brain, her blood would be key, her neutrophils in particular. As for the controversial hospital scenario, it was left ambiguous for a reason; in fact you could actually choose not to kill the NPC (Abby's dad I suppose) by shooting in the leg, it does not even count towards a kill in the final counts of the game. Now, on to story of the first one; Joel had lost his daughter due to a soldier with orders to kill stragglers, leading to a bitter life of survival. Joel travelled across the country with a young girl reminiscent of his daughter, at first apprehensive and unwilling, culminating to a larger crescendo of love and finding a reason to live. That is what the game had done correctly from the first, this connection and character development of Joel and Ellie, told masterfully, even bringing strong emotion to mind when playing, it was quite beautiful. Now on to the second one.

Here is the issue, this game lacks the ability to be able to elicit the same emotions as the first. The character development was haphazard to say the least; once you become attached to a character, they are killed, Jesse is a prime example of this. It is worth noting as well that Abby is now guilty (to the audience) of what Joel did, by murdering someone's father. Same can be said of both; any single NPC could be someone's father making Abby's revenge point essentially moot. Abby even goes on to explain that she had let them live, oh really? You only killed her father figure and the brother of the guy you had let live; keep in mind this is the apocalypse, loose ends can cause very disastrous in a world such as this. That is not the only problem with the story, the stereotyping of the characters is very baffling and never mentioned. Look at Manny, the racist depiction of him being hispanic, it automatically makes him a womanizer? Mel is another baffling choice, we clearly see that the WLF have the resources for soldiers, why in gods name would someone send out a pregnant woman into the field, who is a doctor no less! That makes her invaluable to the organization. Owen, who seemed to be the only moral person, and I say this loosely having gotten Mel pregnant and then having sex with Abby, does not even warrant further characterization; where does he fit in with Abby's life? Who or what was his background? Like Jesse that was squandered. The pacing of the game is off as well, why would you allow Joel tortured and killed, and then make the player play as his killer, who clearly had severe psychopathic, sociopathic, and bipolar tendencies? So we are to believe she is an angel in her play through? Next is Abby's father, not a single person is questioning the fact that he is willing to murder a 14 year old without consent from the girl or her guardian Joel. Also within the lore, they have killed others with 0 success and you expect us to believe killing Ellie would magically have a 100% success rate? I am sorry but Abby's father has to be the worst Doctor of all time, where are his fellows, residents, or even nurses that are continuing his research and teaching his research? Every doctor and surgeon has those and passes that knowledge so how is he the only one? Every character was out of character as well, Tommy was wishy-washy where in the first game Joel had said his brother is impulsive. Ellie was a free spirit that saw the levity in everything, even before Joel's death was still dark and bleak. In the first game Ellie knew that Joel had lied to her, how else does someone end up naked in a hospital gown in a fast driving car without incident? The game does not make sense, maybe if the pacing was different, that would work, like play as Abby first perhaps? Or since Joel saved your life, since the game makes clear that Abby is so moral since Joel saved her life numerous times at the beginning, does that not earn a temporary reprieve? Joel and Tommy survived 20 years on caution, so why throw that away for a random group of armed people you don't know? The writing was poor, period.

This isn't the game many of us wanted, but this is the story that ND wanted to tell. There are some truly great moments, but this game effectively destroyed everything and everyone that like minded fans loved from the first game. I think we all expected Joel to die. This was supposed to be Ellie's story. What we got was a pointless, miserable first half of the game with Ellie, and an action-packed kick-ass (save for a few moments that dragged on and on) second half of the game with a character that a lot of us hated and had no desire to play. There were points I didn't even want to continue playing. I felt nothing for Abby and her friends. I admit I am a huge fan of Joel, I got attached to and invested in both him and Ellie. And I never stopped hating Abby for what she did. But I didn't even dislike this game because he died.

This game is trying waaay too hard to push an agenda that it forgot what made the first game so great. Was the first game ground-breaking in it's plot or gameplay? Of course not. But we fell in love with the Joel/Ellie dynamic. We fell in love with the side characters, the lore, and the world. I cared more about Tess, Bill, Sam and Henry, than I ever did about Dina, Jesse, or (especially) any of Abby's friends. This game is just an exercise in misery. There's no comic relief, there's no "light" to look for in this darkness. Even the feel good flashbacks with Joel and Ellie, which offered that dynamic we craved so much just made me feel sick. It's just bleak for the sake of being as bleak as possible.

I got so sick of seeing Abby succeed and get her way in almost every scenario. Plot armor as thick as her arms. I love seeing more strong female characters, we all love to see it. But we already had that in Ellie, did they really have to push Abby on us so hard? Admittedly Abby is a good character, and if the story had been presented in a different order instead of the screeching halt at the halfway point, I probably could have at least felt better about her. But I never would want to play her for 10+ hours. Just no.

I'm not going to say this is a bad game. This is a bad sequel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is like baking the perfect cake then taking the biggest **** on top. When I say this, I mean that the perfect cake is the graphics and gameplay. The **** that sits on top of that cake is the story and the characters. Whoever wrote this **** on top of the cake should be ashamed for not even looking at the masterpiece that was The last of us. A simple game about a mission of delivering a girl who you grow attached to. The last of us 2 says hey remember the plot of the first game? well this game is all about revenge! put on your backpack and take your pregnant useless girlfriend.

Ellie: Remember Ellie? Of course you do. well now she is 18-21 has a tattoo for some reason in an apocalypse. Ellie likes this girl Dina for some reason, apparently, they kissed once. we don't get to see it though until 10 minutes before the game is done. I can see why some people are surprised that Ellie is a lesbian but that is not my problem with it. My problem is that we are to believe that Ellie and Dina loves each other when all we see is one time when they are in a basement smoking weed, they scissor off-screen “remember that off-screen part for when I get to Abby” The writers of this has never heard of show don't tell before. After playing for a bit they start calling each other babe. That is so cringe. You have played the game for 1 hour but and they have been together for 10 minutes of that and they are calling each other babe.
Joel: Abby comes and kills him after Joel and Tommy saves her life like 10 times. The marketing for this game was all about. Hey, look at how old Joel and Ellie is in this game, isn't that amazing. tricking you into thinking that Joel is going to be in this game. In reality all the marketing showing how much older Joel is were just flashbacks.
Dina: Useless. She is there for two reasons. she is jewish so she teaches Ellie about religion and she is pregnant. Here is what really confused me. Meet Dina, she is most likely the same age as Ellie 18-21. She was obviously born after the apocalypse happened then. She was born in New Mexico... Jackson the town you start in is in Washington. According to google the distance between is 1490 miles, 2398 km. Dina and her sister apparently went to many synagogues. I just don't believe Dina could have been born in New Mexico and end up in Washington.
Abby: Where does this **** get her protein? why are her arms so massive? they were so huge everyone thought she was a transgender chick with dick. Why is half of the game playing a character that no one wants? Abby is the **** that killed Joel, so you know how much you want to kill yourself the second you get to play as her. I mean the character not you the person. Abby and her friends are a part of a group/militia called WLF short for Washington liberation front or wolf. Abby has a "friend" called Owen he went AWOL or something. Owen is got Mel one of Abby's sort of friend pregnant. But Owen is into women with muscles because at one point in the game Abby goes to Owen after he went AWOL you have a little argument that you don't care about then Abby and Owen start to kiss. You expect it to be just like Ellie and Dina's scissoring session, but no. They go full **** on you. you get to see Abby take of Owen's shirt and Owen takes off Abby's shirt. Abby quickly takes off her bra and you see Abby's boob. Abby is so buff that it honestly looks more like a dude's saggy man pec. Owen then takes Abby puts her on the table pulls down her pants and unbuckles his belt. you then see Owen thrust into Abby 3 times. WHO THE **** LOOKED AT THAT AND SAID, Yes this is what people wants!

I've never felt this way about a game before, I made a metacritic account just to share my thoughts.

The gameplay didn't change enough to feel significantly different, I understand that it's hard to innovate nowadays, but some elements feel unpolished to a level of being inexcusable. The rope mechanics are a nice addition, but it's literally the only thing that grabbed my attention,
in an industry where half life: alyx exists, this feels like a weak attempt to tell a story that a small isolated group thought would be "deep".
Sorry for bringing up half-life again, but this feels like if valve would have stopped innovating on their gameplay ideas for half life 2 in 2001-2002 and would have went on until 2004 polishing that game, bringing the unnecessarily dark atmosphere and lack of innovation from years before it actually got released.

I won't spoil anything for this game, but I have to say, having too dark of a story does exist, and this game demonstrates this very well. All the people who think that this adds deepness to the story simply overlook the flaws, then shout at anyone who points them out. If the story wasn't just a miserable boring mess, the game could be a 7 or even an 8 in my eyes.

You can't destroy everything that the first game was and then expect us to care about characters that did it. It's nothing to do with Abby being an unnecessarily buff woman just because or a stupid "love" making seen, also completely unnecessary. It didn't totally suck but it wasn't great either and no, retrospectively making the main character a lesbian does not add depth to her character Expand

This game was an absolute pain to get through. The graphics are impressive, but the gameplay is a total slog. The story is where it gets really bad, though. Ellie's section plays out like a teen drama. There're hints of a love triangle and the cliché teen pregnancy to force in some suspense. None of the characters from her half are truly likable but are at least somewhat nice to deal with. At the end of Ellie's half, we cut back to the beginning of the game to play as Abby; which just felt exhausting. The whole Abby playthrough, they tried to force reasons to like her down our throats. Literally everything they did just felt awful and tiring. The first thing Abby does when you're introduced to her is save a zebra. Everything is just so obvious, it's horrible storytelling. All said, this was a terrible game to play through, and I think I hate it so much because of how good it could've been. Expand

Naughty seems to have missed what made people love the original game. It wasnt the setting, or the plot, or the gameplay, it was the relationship that grew between the two protagonists. Its the further development of their relationship that many fans, myself included, wanted to see. Thats not what we got. Not even close. Instead we get some confused revenge plot that is not only overdone, but is poorly executed. I left this game feeling bitter, angry and frustrated, and only in retrospect did I realize that I didnt actually enjoy any of my time with it, and that I even regretted playing it. The original story is better left untouched.

I would rate this game as Not Worth Playing.

The game becomes repetitive and tedious at some point. The narrative is poorly developed and some events are forced into the story, they happen as a result of a series of miraculous coincidences. The game uses some cheap emotional manipulation techniques to create fake empathy for certain characters. The intention is there, the way to get to it just doesn't work.

Sometimes, it even feels as though the writer of this game is not the same as the first one. Everything that was created in Part I was thrown away in Part II. It is difficult to believe the actions of certain characters, especially in a world like the one they try to depict in the story. Also, the behavior of the characters in this game go against what they had established in the first one.

I understand that the false advertisement was done in order to protect the story, but I can't help thinking that they did it to trick people into thinking this game would be an adventure similar to the first one in some way, and so ensure sales on day 1, relying on the nostalgic feeling people had for the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Man I was so hyped for this game.... I spent every single day waiting for the release date. I sat on my sofa and started playing it, The graphics.... seeing Joel with those graphics was astonishing. His death was indeed a big loss, for me one of the biggest losses in game history. For the first time I had a real mission, I had a reason to keep playing it, I had an objective. But then they cut off my entire playthrough, all my effort was for nothing, they changed characters and suddently I had to play as my enemy. They've put this "enemy" idea in my head and then they tried so hard to change my mind through the next 10 hours gameplay. The final chapter I had to see one of my favorite characters lose everything, even her chance to venge her father's death. For me they killed both main characters and placed other null and bad writed characters just to use as pieces in a chess game or something like that. The graphics are the best for this generation and probably there will be no other game with such graphics. The gameplay is good and well design although sometimes it's a little repetitive and boring. The scripted cutscenes are so well done that you can barely destinguish whether it's a gameplay or cutscene. The game has a lot to offer in one hand. But in the other is just a poor writen story with forgetable characters and an awful, horrible chronologinal order. I'm so disappointed, I would never expect something with such low quality (speaking of story) from Naughty Dog. Neil Druckmann, you should listen to your fans, not try to make an unforgetable "revenge is bad" story. You surely can do more than this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm pretty disappointed I'm even writing this. I was excited for the continued success of the series, but they severely missed the target with this one. So what happened? Let's talk about most of it: the good and the bad.

The entirety of this game isn't terrible. We'll be discussing this later, but quite frankly I think I would have thought this title was OK had it done a few things differently, but for what we got: here are a few things I enjoyed:

. Relaxing gun modification sounds and animations at the workbenches. I could watch this for minutes on end.

. Stunningly gorgeous graphics. While this may not shine at all times, you can really appreciate the art when you take a moment to look at the scenery in between scrounging.

. There are some clear winners in the gameplay section department. That giant Seattle area where Ellie constantly scribbled on the map? Superb. I was hoping there'd be more. The entirety of Abby's creepy hospital section? I was on edge. When I stopped being disappointed by the story as a whole: they really had some fun sequences here.

. The idea to hide upgrade trees as a question mark to what you may even get instead of showing us all of the possibilities was a fantastic idea. This way I didn't hoard my pills waiting for the stealth magazine to show up, but instead I upgraded the abilities I had at every given moment to maximize my combat potential in the scenarios I faced NOW.

. The sheer amount of accessibility and difficulty adjustment options are great and SHOULD have been highlighted before starting your first run. I would have killed to know that an autopickup option existed for items as you scurried around the numerous kitchens and ruins. Heck I probably would have modified the AI partner behavior instead of living with my frustrating experience I was given (we'll get to that).

. The character diversity was a highlight for me. Representation in games really is important to a lot of people, and I think this was mostly a good step. Some people have a problem with how Lev's trans issues were portrayed as the only thing going for Lev, but since I'm not a part of that community I want their voice to be heard above mine on that matter.

You can see from the above that I actually find quite a few things to enjoy. Unfortunately the next section will be... a bit heavier. Here is what I found lacking:

. The biggest flaw is easily the story structure and pacing. That cliffhanger mid game is ending of Code Geass season 1 levels of jarring. Want to see the rest of the theater scene? Too bad play 12 hours of a new character. Don't like her? Tough cookies now play fetch with this dog and eat a burrito with Manny. I honestly think I would have found the game to be "eh it's fine" had it been tied together chronologically.

. I can't believe I'm not allowed the lament the loss of the main protagonist from the last game. He did a lot of wrong and deserved it (e.g. killed innocent people to survive), but I grew to like him over my 10~ hour journey in TLoU1. Paired with Ellie he was fun to be around. THEY were fun to be around.

. Dulled partner parings with actually intrusive AI, pushing you out of cover often, and milquetoast conversation. The days of a Joel / Ellie paring were only hinted at in the numerous flashbacks and teased me at what a proper TLoU2 could have been.

. Too many flashbacks and too many flashbacks within flashbacks. TLoU2 could have learned proper story structure from its predecessor if it listened.

. The slight manipulation of Ellie killing (all but 1) dogs she meets while Abby can play and pet them. Felt like a cheap trick as one of the first things in Abby's section.

. The 3 hour misery simulator, chaining events of a theater deathmatch to dancing in the kitchen to fat geralt to a waist high water brawl. I've never begged a game to just be done with it more often than this flounder drowning in ankle deep water.

. While most of the gore could be passed off as "hey look video game violence", something about the leaky blood from throat stabs and the "clip her wings" section were quite uncomfortable. Also for Christ's sakes the dog killing... just purely miserable.

I had to cut a lot of content to meet the character limitations, but know there's a lot to talk about and, at the end of the day, because I disliked my time with this game doesn't mean you have to or should take it to the level of death threats to the game's creators. It's an experience, I had one, you had one, we can move on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us part 2 really shows how weak and boring the ganeplay is once you strip away the fantastic story and characters of the first game. Part 2 is so focused on setting up shock value to try to make the player as angry and traumatized as Ellie by Joel's death that it forgets hoe to tell a story. Joel has to act out of character in order for him to be vulnerable in the first place while stacking up Coincidences one after another. They game does have an investing idwmea here and there such as making the player play as the antagonist for roughly half the game and has you fight against the protagonist while doing so. However the game fails to get the big payoff for this due to its shallow emotional set ups. Im sorry, but having npc bad guys call out a completely random person's, or dog's, name when they die is pointless at best and comical at worst. Speaking of comedy, there is an entire section of the game where a full blown pregnant woman is running around a battlefield simply because she can't be told what she can and can't do is moronic to the point I was crying with laughter. That dame character then passes moral judgements on everyone while the game clearly wants me to care and reflect on how selfish Abby is but all I can think about is "that baby dead".

The gameplay is Mediocre at best.
    The story is laughable/frustratingly bad.
The main cast of characters have been ruined by poor out of chatacer choices.
The supporting cast is weak and uninteresting at best and laughable at their worst.
Acting/voice acting is the best videogames has to offer.
    Sound design is great.
Graphics are truly unbelievable and right up there with God of War and Final Fantasy 7 Remake as the best the ps4 has to offer.

The question becomes how much do graphics, sound design, and acting mean in a game with such a heavy focus on Story and and Chacter? For me, the answer is about 4 points out of 10 because what is the point of these things if the reason I am playing the game in the first place is story and character? This game is a beautiful house built on sand.

Answer: 1) Joel and Ellie's relationship. 2) The stakes of finding a cure.

Question: How to ruin the second game?
Answer: 1) Remove Joel + Ellie's relationship by replacing them with character's we've never met or seen before. 2) Forget about finding a cure.

Now the story is centred around Ellie's desire for revenge and there are flash backs to her and Joel and these are the best moments in the game. But for half the game, we focus on people we didn't come to see AFTER they've already killed Joel.

And we're supposed to like them?

It's frustrating because the production value is insane, all the actors are amazing, the gameplay is solid and the music is beautiful. The scenery and level design are some of the best ever.
