Incredibly crafted and a great sequel that visits the harsh reality of the world in The Last of Us. The game takes risks that pay off but also allows the player to question their own morals whilst following this journey.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. in order to fix this game and actually make the story work all they had to do was replace Joel with Dina and make Joel die a heroic death saving Ellie from one of the factions from the story while in pursuit for Dina's killer making Joel's death so much more impactful to then go and avenge both Ellie's lover and father figures deaths. but at the same time without turning to the killer's point of view so it's just a story from Ellies' perspective. also, make Ellie meet lev and he's older sister and work them into Ellies' story as they felt like a good edition from a character perspective but need plot tweaks. that's it really, the game itself is visually stunning and the gameplay felt really good but unfortunately, the story denies any success from everyone else's hard work to make the game achieve legendary status. The ending would need to change so that Ellie gets her revenge which gives the player meaning to carry on to the end.

personally I couldn't care less about the inclusion of LGBTQ characters as long as it feels natural and doesn't feel like they were placed into a game just for the sake of ticking boxes. As a gamer, I don't want to see political agendas in a game I just want to enjoy the story/gameplay for example if Abby's dad was a bodybuilder and she wanted to take after her dad then that's more natural and would make sense after her loss but currently, I can't think of any reason why she would become the hulk in a world of harsh survival and scarce resources.

I'm writing this review in hopes the games gets the praise it deserves.
Graphics are phenomenal, the best of the best on the current gen, the attention to detail, the lighting, the shading, the effects, e v e r y t h i n g.
Music fits perfectly with everything, the sound is also really realistic and well made.

Where people seem to have an issue with is how the story is tailored, people were expecting good old Ellie and Joel adventure, and the game would've been just fine had they done it this way, but Naughty Dog chose the uncommon way, taking a lot of risks and, in my opinion, succeeding at it.
Naughty Dog picks the story 4 years after the first one in a setting where everything seems to be fine, playing the guitar with joel etc.
They introduce us to another character - Abby - which is majorly the reason people are despising this game.
Abby kills Joel and that fact alone pushed a lot of people away, people reviewing the game by playing only about 3h of a 30+hour game
After the death of joel the people who kept playing experienced the violent and gorish side of Ellie, and her pursuit to kill Abby, but, at some point Abby has the upper hand on Ellie and the developers leave you on a huge cliffhanger "is Ellie dead??" and right then an there you enter a 10hour long Abby side of the story, this reeeeally threw people off, why would you want to play as the person who killed you beloved joel? And even in my case i didn't want to play as her, all i wanted was Ellie and more Ellie and moments of her and Joel and violence and her killing Abby, BUT at some point you gain empathy with Abby, you understand her side, the whole story of her and the "scars" children is one of the more rich aspects of the whole last of us story.
After the whole Abby arc you get back to where Abby confronted Ellie and this part is like Naughty Dog is just completely playing with the heart of the player, you get put in a position like no other where you have to sneak up on Ellie and just destroy her with punches about 3 times, this scene alone invokes feeling I have NEVER felt in a videogame before "i dont wanna do this WTF??" but at the same you know the things Abby has gone through because of Joel and Ellie's decisions. At the end Abby leaves Ellie alone and we get a time skip to Ellie living in a perfect setting with DIna, the "happy ending" right? Hell no, Naughty Dog is not done, they push it further, Ellie leaves the house at some point against Dina's request to stay by her side with the baby. We enter the final arc, Ellie pursues Abby to the place she and the "scar" kid were kidnapped to.
The moment they meet again Abby is just DONE, skinny-short-haired abby doesn't even care about anything other than getting away with the kid. Ellie has a flashback of her murdering joel and they begin the final confrontation, but ellie has another flashback of joel playing the guitar and that triggers a thought of caring for someone, Abby caring for this kid like joel cared for Ellie, and then they go their separate ways.
The game ends with Ellie getting to her "perfect" home again but it is empty besides her stuff, she picks up the guitar and starts playing the song that Joel taught her in the beginning of the game but it sounds a bit off due to the two bitten of fingers. She then leaves the home like some kind of open ending "where will she go and what will happen now?".

Last of Us II is by no means a perfect game, i think the story could've been tailored just a bit differently and the gameplay could've been more innovative, but that doesn't mean it is not a amazing, like the first game you still feel the same emotions, but they added a lot more and gave steroids to every each one of it.

The Last of Us II is a game that will be remembered forever, many many people don't like getting played with their emotions this way, but if you open your mind and get past through that uncomfortableness you SEE the amazing game it is, you understand the choices of the developers and you get something like no other game does.

The story is incredible dull and wants you to love characters that destroy the things you loved about the first one.
They make you play the story and let's you feel bad for doing so. Just a poor writing story wise.
On the bright side, the visuals are stunning but that's pretty much the only good thing about this game.
Nothing new on gameplay mechanics, you can jump but you really don't need it.
I finished it and glad i did it so fast so i could still sell the game at this point. Kinda sad about it actually, i legit loved the story, characters and the overall feel on the last of us part 1. We can all hope there will be no part 3.

Joel gets killed straight away (the relationship was what made the first game interesting), there's zero chemistry between Ellie and Dina (it feels like the relationship is forced in to earn equality points), you're forced to play as Abby (when we've spent the first 13 hours building up hatred towards her).

They did a good job at making you sympathize with Abby, by the end I was hoping she would survive, even though my anger towards her was prominent. The ending was extremely dark and depressing, so hoping it is a set up for a third game. To give fans a better end to the story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
    3) La inclusión LGBT: A NADIE LE IMPORTA, TODOS SABÍAMOS QUE ELLIE ERA LESBIANA DESDE EL PRIMER JUEGO, DEJEN DE TAPAR NUESTRA INCONFORMIDAD CON LA ESCUSA BARATA DE "SON HOMOFOBICOS"

For haters...The only reason people are so in love with Ellie and Joel is because we were forced to become emotionally attached to them in the first game. Imagine if in Part 1 we were playing Abby and her father. The object of the game was to survive and create a cure. You spend hours getting to know them and seeing the love between father and daughter. Then, OMG you find out there's a girl who's immune and that may be your only hope of saving everybody. But there's a cost, extract what you need from her brain will kill her. Moral dilemma...you ultimately decide the needs of the many out way the needs of the few...or the ONE. Abby and her father fought through unspeakable horrors to make it to the hospital and they have the girl. They have no idea who Joel is, then right before you're about to perform the surgery a guy busts in and murders you. Abby later sees her beloved father, savior of humanity, brutally murdered by some monster. HOW DOES PART II LOOK NOW? Expand

In the first part, I loved playing it (Ellie part) but in the Abby part I found it too boring and pointless because whoever wanted to play with the person who killed a character as dear as Joel and is practically half the game apart .

Leaving aside the end and the part of abby I think it would be an excellent 10/10 game, but the story had very good potential and it could have been the whole game entertaining and fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The games itself, in regards to mechanics, mood, music etc, was amazing. some of the best stealth combat ive ever experienced and the upgrades system was really great. Graphics speak for themselves; they were beyond beautiful and the small details blew me away (dust particles, light spills, ai interactions...) The game also did an amazing job of making me feel on edge at some points. HOWEVER, i feel the greatest downfall lies in the actual story. with the original last of us, I really felt a connection to the characters and the story made sense to me. Even in the left behind DLC, I really fell in love with it. In part two, i felt none of that. I did not connect with the characters in the same way and the demise of joel was extremely undeserving, despite whatever hes done. Abby is just as guilty as Joel in many things. Im not upset Joel died, i actually expected it. Its the manner it happened: him easily giving Tommy and his name to complete strangers (whether or not he knew their intentions, this is not something the Joel we know wouldve done. He was always overly cautious of strangers. you would think he would continue to be cautious especially knowing hes wronged alot of people), the spitting on his dead body and then the attempt to make players understand and like abby. The game bounces from place to place frequently and the only redeeming point in the story for me was in the Joel flashbacks, especially the one with the museum. seeing Ellie and Joel interact in that way was exactly the experience I was looking for when jumping into the continuation of their story. My absolute least favorite portion was the TEN HOURS you play as Joels killer, Abby. it felt redundant and, as hard as the game tried, I never felt an ounce of sympathy and remorse for her. Just constantly found myself annoyed and rushing through this portion. playing catch with a dog or being nice to SCARS after killing dozens is not redeamable qualities for someone that killed the person that made the game what it was. I read a comment on youtube that said, "you wouldnt kill Nathan Drake in the first hour of any of the uncharted games". In the end, Ellie doesnt even get the revenge she had fought so hard to get. She flashes to a memory of her and joel the night of her kiss with Dina. They plan on attempting to repair their relationship. and this make her let abby go?? as she has her drowning, on the brink of death she goes, "oh yeah. nevermind." after murdering and rampging through so many different groups and areas, she just.... lets the whole thing go. this felt not only out of character for Ellie, but a slap in the face to both fans and the characters. I feel like this wouldve motivated her further, seeing joels face and the possibility of them getting back to where they were. the game couldve ended countless times: at the farmhouse the first time with Dina, At the theatre When Playing as Abby or even when Ellie is walking around with jj, Exploring their new home. Those all would have been more efficient, i feel, than what they went for. In the end, I still love the last of us as a franchise and would still play whatever they put out next in this story, if they ever do. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The start of the game was ok in my opinion. I was kind of excited that there was a 4-year time skip because it was like Ellie and Joel were starting a new adventure, but my expectations faded very quickly when the game started with Ellie and Dina. After a while playing as Ellie and Dina this felt more like a love story. Then Joel died in arguably the worst way possible and it felt more and more like a poor death the more as the story went on. It's just so sad because I had a great experience with The Last of Us 1 and I had such high expectations for this game and it just had such a sh*tty story. They also added this new character, Abby, who I'm sure everyone wanted to kill at the end but then Ellie spares her. After everything that Ellie was through all for nothing and the ending was just so sad to with Ellie's family leaving her, I'm also sure that Ellie losing her fingers and not being able to play the guitar is a metaphor for how she lost everything. I'm guessing that she went to see Tommy after the credits rolled, so I'm hoping that a DLC will come out and redeem something from this game. Gameplay-wise this game does very well. The rope physics was really fun to play around with and the gore and guns were both very well made. After all, I wish that the ending wasn't so open-ended. Expand

It is the worst story. The game is deceiving the user, and the story composition is full of someone's self-satisfaction and biased thinking. What's even worse is that they are forcing users. This game only gave me the displeasure that I had been expecting this game for years.

Didn’t feel anything when playing it except boredom. Story was dragged. Neil is a bad writer, ending sucked. If you like it then good for you. I refunded it, waste of time and money. If you want a game similar to this then play Walking Dead Part 1. That game has an intriguing story unlike this drag. Expand

I really try it, i wanted that this game was my favorite game of all time, but i could not.
The point of the Last Of Us was the relationship of the main characters, find hope in despair, find the light in the darkness.
But the whole story was about a pointless revenge, that goes no where.
This story destroys all the characters, and the worse part is that also destroy the player.
And the game do this in exchange for nothing.

The gameplay is amazing, better than the first one. You can easily go from sneaking your way around like Sam Fisher to beating everyone up like Kratos and it all flows together perfectly. Story (no spoiler here) is great too, very unconventional but great. Same goes for character development. The vast majority of people who complain about those too points either 1- didn't play the game and based their opinion on the leaks, 2-didn't finish the game and got mad at some point or 3- didn't understand it. everything in the story happens for a reason and everything any character does is justifiable and explained. NO character is "out of character" in this game.. except maybe for one thing near the end (not gonna say more because I want this to be spoiler free). Now is the game perfect, no, to me it's probably worth a solid 8.5 or 9 out of 10.. I give it a 10 to make my part in countering the tens of thousand of trolls and review bombers who gave it a 0/10 without even having played it and those who played it and again give it a 0/10 because they didn't like the story (which as I said, is objectively well written but just very controversial. It is meant to make the player feel angry and sad, it succeeded and those who can't handle it give it a 0). Remember, the vast majority of those who gave it a 0/10 made their review on the day of the release, considering the game takes around 25h to complete, it should be a good hint that they're just angry trolls. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It pains my heart to feel obliged to write this, but it's necessary.

Please note these thoughts are all my own, and if you enjoyed the game I am happy for you - I honestly wish I had.

I've been an avid fan of naughty dog since their crash bandicoot days, and I've put some serious time into all of their games. So you can imagine my excitement leading up to this game. Following TLOU is quite a tough act, but I was convinced the challenge was in capable hands.

    I was wrong.

Before I start bashing things, I should not that the world and graphics are fantastic. I have not seen a game as good looking since God of War, and the development team should be commended for their hard work to build it. Gameplay is a little outdated, but fun enough to not get too boring. Crafting additions are cool (although the animations take an age), and aside from the fact you work out very quickly that most issues are solved by smashing a window or throwing a rope somewhere (or both!), it was an enjoyable experience to play within the world.

Now we get onto the meaty stuff. TLOU had good gameplay, but it was nothing to be marvelled at. What made the game one of the best, was the story that was told during your journey with Joel and Ellie. TLOU2 spits all over this, sh**s on it and smears it into the ground.

The pacing of the story was horrible, character development was non existent, characters whom I was meant to believe had relationships with each other was not believe-able. Their choices for the actual narrative were bold, yet foolish. Killing off Joel so early was obviously going to cause backlash, especially considering the inclusion of him in trailers (not to mention one cutscene which he appeared in within the trailers, but it was actually Jesse in the game). His relationship with Ellie is what so many people loved from the final game, and the flashback sequences were the best parts of the game in my opinion. But with Joel dead I decided to be open minded - they must have something spectacular set up?

    They did not.

What followed was 20 hours of badly paced, poorly written story, where I genuinely had to convince myself to see the game through. Abbies flashback section did its best to try and get me to care about her, but I spent the whole time finding wonderful ways for her to die. For as long as I was playing the game, I didn't care about her as she killed Joel. Seeing her perspective didn't change much, as if you want to go down that channel you'd have to analyse every npc Joel, Ellie and Abbie killed in the games - which should mean we have about 6000 spin offs in the works.

The one character whom started to grow on me was quickly killed before the Abbie switch, and I wish they spent more time working on developing a relationship between Dina and Ellie, so I actually gave a damn about Dina. Its' hard to take her seriously when one weeks she's dating Jesse and the next she's willing to do anything for Ellie.

Plot points in the story were very convenient, to a noticeable extent (you obviously give some convenience leeway in movies and games for the sake of the plot).

And the ending left me feeling unsatisfied and was just a kick in the teeth to what Ellies journey had been all about. The one thing she was afraid of was being alone, and hey ho - look where she ended up.

It was all in fact for nothing.

I do not like romantic moments.
Abby is poorly introduced into the plot, as the viewer ends up hating her, before knowing how it is (which is the case with most, but not mine).

Misleading advertising and questionable creative choices lead to what will be a disappointing, unsatisfactory, and anti-climatic tale that leaves a beloved franchise in very uncertain waters.

The shifting of blame to fans for not swallowing unlikable new characters or hard to understand plot points ignores the fact that the developer took far too many bizarre gambles with a property of this caliber to deflect blame.

The gameplay, environments, and music recover the value of this experience to a degree. However, a grueling and essentially nihilistic story will leave most normal gamers asking "what was the point?".

Then it all comes crashing down on the bad implementation of the story. The story feels like the first draft of a college english paper that was composed of several high school english papers on the same subject. It lacks an iota of consideration for consistency of character or narrative development. This series is a narrative focused single player experience, and will be judged critically on that story. Years from now, the only reason I will even remember this game exists is because of how disappointed I am in the game and the studio. The characters are inconsistent, underdeveloped, and do not act like sane human beings. You have a single thread throughout the story of how "an eye for an eye makes the world blind" but you never feel satisfied by the plot developments or the ridiculous need to pile plot threads that never build to a single satisfying conclusion. I bought the game to know exactly why there was so much hate for the game. Now that I am done I hope Naughty Dog recognizes that this is the worst game they have ever put out, and it should serve as a badge of shame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay wise and graphics it's certainly awesome, even more so than TLOU...

The story though... it's just dumb and doesn't really make a lot of sense, mostly because the characters you knew don't behave in the same way they did, they just feel like different people.

Also, forcing you to play as the murderer of your beloved main character for practically half the game didn't really do anything for me (nor the story with her entire entourage).

I mean, it's like after shooting Bambi's mother you do half the film about the hardships the hunter went through in his life up to that moment and pretty much implying it was justified.

Some people like to say this game is getting negative reviews because of LGBT hate against Ellie (which i think is a dumb point, Left Behind got great user reviews while depicting Ellie as a lesbian) or Abby's sex scene... srsly? people waited 7 years for this game and they are just gonna trash it because there is a 30 second sex scene they don't like?

If people think that's more likely than the story just being overall poor (and i would say even BAD for what was expected of ND and TLOU)... well i guess adding an LGBT/Sexist element to any story makes it invulnerable to critic: if you don't like it, you are a bigot, even if you liked the previous iteration which also was pro-LGBT and many other games with female leads.

I finished the campaign last night and I can honestly say this game is a stunning achievement both narratively, thematically and as a technical achievement from a graphics technology standpoint. Gameplay has been tweaked and is a fun loop of explore-scavenge-craft-combat that improves on the 1st game with subtle but much needed changes.

Story wise, this is a game that asks you to understand multiple view points and to empathise with even your worst enemy. The mature themes on display here ask you to look deeper than simply your attachment to the 1st games characters. You will be forced to confront loss, anger and a need for retribution but then come out the other side to see the bigger picture that 'narratively speaking' tests your ability to empathize with a fellow human being and your compassion. And yes the game is quite dark in narrative but like the first game there is always a glimmer of hope throughout given by those surrounding you during your journey.

The ending will leave you thinking. But I felt a sense of satisfaction that this story has come full circle and made sense in the grander scheme of things. It's not a fairytale ending by any means. But if you played through this game and expected a happy ending then you missed the point of your characters journey.

I highly recommend The Last of Us 2 to mature minded gamers who want to play a game that presents a gritty experience with it's confronting themes and narrative. If your someone who will take offence to a story not providing you with constant positive feedback then your not going to have a good time here. But I have no issue giving this game my strongest of recommendations. Thank you Naughty Dog & all the actors/actresses, the world you created is just a stunning achievement. BRAVO!!

They didn't play an integral role for the characters, the same way "being gay" or similar shouldn't be a single defining trait of a real person. In part 2, however, just about everyone is part of some alternative group, be it LGBT or a minority group. There's nothing wrong with being part of these groups, it's simply so overstated and extreme that it makes no sense. And this is ignoring the otherwise jumbled mess of a story with way too many characters that nobody cares about and overall messy story. It just seems to me that Naughty Dog chose to ignore everything the fans love about their games to fit an agenda. Therefore I am giving this a 0/10 in hopes of the score ending up low enough that Naughty Dog decides to redo the game in a way that the fans would like. It wasn't perfect but I can't say which part I liked more. These games are the standard of what I like stories to be, so 9.5 for me.

Graphics? Yeah, good, like a lot of other games.
Gameplay? Pretty much the same of other games.
Story? You literally throwed away all of what makes The Last of Us in this game. All characters are poorly written, and the story doesn't make sense at all.

That final? It was the last nail in the coffin.

Never spend your money in that piece of crap! Just ruined the franchise totally! Nil Draxman or whatever your name - it your fault.

Just not a good game, I didn't like Abby at all and think that Ellie should put a bullet in her head

Wonderful game, not what you expected and that’s what makes this game amazing. Making another game with Elli and Joel would be easy task and easy to sell but that’s not Naughty Dog. They want you to think twice and see the other side of each story. Shift uneasily on your seat, this is not an easy ride but it worth every minute you spent. The last of us 2 has some of the smoothest movements and most impactful gunplay anyone can currently experience in a video game similarly, the stealth is top notch equivalent to metal gear and leagues above any assassins creed game. Unfortunately the storytelling seems to be on par with most COD games with randomly interlaced flashbacks and characters that you won't care about fortunately you don't need to worry because when main characters are killed they're never mentioned again. Ultimately the story is a one told 1000s times and it's been told better 100s of times. 0 points for the story and 3 for gameplay would not recommend Expand

Don't listen at all these terrible reviews, play the game on your own and create your own opinion about this game!

The graphics are extremely beautiful for a console game, the gameplay is as good as it was in the first part and the story is actually really great if you don't actively try to hate it, because everyone does it... There were a lot of great, funny, sad, frustrating, etc.

There were a lot of great, funny, sad, frustrating, etc. moments in this game which and I think that's what determines a great diversified plot!

I have to say that many moments in this game makes you angry or sad because it may not turn out the way you want it, but that's life and you also cannot control the plot of a good movie!

And if you wrote a bad review because u did not like that Ellie is homosexual and something else that I'm not gonna say because of possible spoiler, than you are just a sexist idiot.. These topics are really relevant in real life and I think that it makes the game even a bit more realistic.

For me definitely a candidate to be the Game of the Year!

This is a far more daring, complex and interesting story than the first. It requires an open mind from the player throughout, which obviously a large portion of the gaming community don’t have. Without spoiling anything, the game does narratively which I’ve personally never seen in a game, and questions your own actions as a player.
If you’re having doubts early in the game, trust the game

If you’re having doubts early in the game, trust the game and the people behind it, I can almost guarantee the ending will tie everything together beautifully and make you wonder why you were worried in the first place.
It’s not a perfect game, with some missteps along the way, but a fantastic experience nonetheless.

I don’t understand why the game is getting slated on here. I was really looking forward to it and it did not disappoint. Graphics are incredible and the plot has the perfect balance between protagonist and antagonist.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
