Everything is so perfect except the story-telling, which gives you a deep-dark, depressing, and devastating feeling. The story starts with bitter and end with bitter again. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It seems the vast majority of people who dislike this game were simply after fan service Joel and Ellie adventures. This game tells a story which creates such a vividly rich image of the world it’s set in.

It provides a unique take on storytelling that deviates from the main characters and shows the new perspectives of all characters involved, and after the initial frustrations of not wanting to play asr the bad guy because they’re ‘bad’ you begin to empathise with their motives are eventually see that they’re life runs as a parallel to that of Ellie’s. They’re just two individuals caught up in a cruel world where life is so painfully cheap.

There is no plot armour, characters are just people in all their complex glory.

This game is a must buy if you enjoyed the first one, the story is gorgeously pulled off once you understand it breaks the tradition of standard storytelling. And of course, the gameplay is scaled up tenfold from the first instalment, every moment feels satisfying and visceral. And holy **** does it look and feel amazing, the atmosphere and immersion in this game is like no other.

Don’t listen to the review-bombers who hate any notion of LGBT in their games (which by the way feels incredibly natural in this game and not forced at all). Play the game yourself and form your own opinion, I loved this game for doing something different whilst still staying so brutally ‘The Last of Us’.

To be fair the game play, though not much of a change, still okay. graphics was nice and good. that being said, the reason i like the TLOU1 is the story so for me this is just a let down. if not for the story i think it wont be much of a drag to play this. new characters are just not likable. original characters just nerfed for the sake of the plot so dissapointing. too linear and just bleak

Although it’s not as tightly written as the first installment it’s a wild narrative that speaks volumes on violence and loss while also being extremely gripping. Not once did I find myself bored, maybe scared or thrilled or depressed, but I never wanted to put down the controller. I also don’t think it was perfect but mostly because of specific segments that had me dying too much or being confused on where to go next. But the combat in this game is brutal and most of the time feels as real as a fame can get. The story is the subjective factor responsible for most hate towards the game. Joel’s death and Abby gameplay is the most hated aspect. But if you’re open minded to what this game has to offer you would enjoy the ride because this is one hell of game. Expand

I gotta say I was very sceptical because of all the noise before the games release, but after having completed it I found it to be absolutely perfect. It had some really tough emotional scenes, but I feel like it fits in perfectly in this harsh imperfect world TLOU is set it. Lot of hard emotional scenes, that really adds to the post apocalyptic scenery. The graphics are stunning, gameplay is amazing, and the story blew me away. It’s just so hard hitting. I was left numb and emotionally drained at the end. Don’t believe the 0/5 comments, it’s become popular to hate on this game due to its representation of diversity and LGBT coverage. This game disrespects central characters. The gameplay ok but the story is laughable and in fact insulting to the fans. Forced identity politics and regressive ideology as usual, think of Terminator: Dark Fate, Recent Star Wars, Batwoman, GoT season8 ... This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of Us part 1 was a 10/10 story with probably 6/10 gameplay in my opinion. Well here in the second one it is probably the opposite. I LOVE this new gameplay mechanics when you play as Ellie (on hardest difficulty its even better, you have to really outsmart your enemy, watch out for your ammo and trully think before you act). It is BRUTAL, you can deform your enemy, make them suffer, cut off their limbs, disarm them and make them beg for their life, before you kill them, it is something new and fresh, that I missed in the first one. On the other hand, the story is much weaker then the first one. Pacing is terrible, you play as Ellie the first half of the game with 4 flashbacks and than you play the other half as Abby with her own flashbacks, the problem is, that these two narratives dont connect at all, all you learn as Abby is that her group is alright and pretty much innocent. Abbys story gets better at the end, when she connects with Lev and finds her long ago lost feelings. I liked the ending, Ellie was possessed with revange and lost everything because of her selfish acts (just like Joel in the first game). At the end she reminds herself of the last conversation with Joel where she said to him, that she cant forgive him, but she can at least try, thats why she lets Abby go. This story is about forgiveness, not about revange. Loved Ellies parts of the game, but I was bored with Abby tbh, well ... It is still a great game and it is a must have for PS4 for its controversy itself ... Im giving it a weak 8/10 (deserved 7, but Naughty dog made some AWESOME games and Im forgiving them these flops) ;) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game expands on gameplay in a great way, adding a lot of new and interesting elements. Because you play as two different people, the contrast in play style between the characters is a nice touch. The graphics are outstanding, as are the physics and sound design, resulting in a very realistic feeling world.

The story - Many reviews on here whine about being forced to play as Joel’s killer, stating “how are we supposed to feel sympathy for her” when she killed such a beloved character. They also state “this is nothing like the original story, no character depth, game of thrones, violence, etc”. Did they even play the same game, or were they just blinded by their nostalgia and put Joel’s character on a pedestal? Joel was not a good person at the end of The Last of Us. He did many **** up things, including murdering a doctor unnecessarily (which I remember being a big talking point when the game was first released, as it forces the player to do it despite many feeling it was wrong) and stops potentially the only possible cure from being developed. The point of that ending was that no matter how good Joel was to Ellie, he wasn’t exactly a “good” person in a lot of ways, no one is in the game. TLOU2 story was the most natural continuation of the story. Joel’s actions caught up to him, he traded his life for Ellie’s. You can be angry that they forced you to play as Abby, you can even choose to still dislike Abby after everything they show you about her, but you should at least be able to understand her. Abby is the monster in Ellie’s story, but Joel was the monster in Abby’s, and that is the point of this whole game. They force you to learn about Abby, about her life and her friends, just as they did for Ellie, to show that they were no different. They were human, not monsters, with their own lives and flaws that were occurring indiscriminate of each other. The parallel between Ellie and Abby is significant and understanding it is what’s most important for this game’s narrative. “But Abby was brutal and despicable, she beat Joel to death” yeah and Ellie tortured and beat Norah to death for Abby’s location. No one is a good person, but because players have put Joel on such a pedestal in their mind, they refuse to accept that he could possibly die in such a way. I don’t think anyone has to like all of the choices made, but to say this wasn’t a well told, character driven and developed story is ridiculous. It was expertly told and beautifully directed, and not one person can convince me otherwise.

almost 4 days, finally I reached the end. I didn't see any spoiler before I played it by myself, so when I saw Joel's death, the story of Abby's father, Ellie's revenge, I was totally shocked.

Personally, I can accept the whole story of Part 2, I can understand both Abby and Ellie. Abby's hate of Joel, because of her father's death. Her father was shot by Joel, without any weapon in his hand. Abby can not forgive Joel, her heart was taken by rage, she belived her father is a good man, who wanted to save the world, but killed by Joel. the next few years, she just trained herself, joined wlf, met exboyfriend. All she wanted is revenge, is Joel. you can see, When she killed Joel, she didn't blame Ellie, she gave her life, let her go, that is first time.

Abby didn't meet someone who really save her souls, until Lev and Yara. After 3days with Lev, and her two best friends were killed by Ellie, she still gave Ellie second chance. Because she konws that feeling, that your heart was taken by RAGE, REVENGGE, and you kill someone who can not hurt you, even you hate that man, he can still be you nightmare all your life. that is different, Abby do have killed so many people, but she can tell herself, on that moment, if she didn't shoot, she might be the dead one. But with Joel, she can't tell herself like that, because joel was under her foot, without any chance to do something. She knew that feeling after Joel, so she didn't do it again to Ellie, twice.

And Ellie, some people can not accept the choice of Ellie. Did you guts really kill someone?Did you guys really kill someone who have nothing to do with you, and have nothing in her hand when you pointed her with a gun, and be Pregnant?if you did that once, you might understand Ellie. of course, Ellie has killed so many people, but the same, she did that because of defense too. And Joel always taught her to be a good girl, she knews what is right, what is not. And the most important, Ellie didn't have a chance to apologize to Joel. She want to save the world, she know she might be the hope of the world, but Joel made a choice for her, she feels guilty all the time after she knows the turth. she finally forgive Joel, but Joel is dead, she have no chance to say that. And after Mel, Ellie knows if she do it
again, Abby will be her nightmare too. so she let Abby and Lev go. I can totally feel her struggle and pain.

i want say it again, i can understand both Abby and Ellie, i think it's a good story, I don't want to be a silent player. I just want to make my voice heard.

The story is breathtaking, every character has their own unique personality, and the character development is nearly perfect. I've seen many reviews of people saying that Neil Druckmann didn't stay true to the characters. This is wildly inaccurate.

Trauma has shaped certain decisions of characters in the game and the writers make it feel very realistic. This Naughty Dog project was very ambitious and they took a risk on telling the story that they did. This is not a game that contains the same kind of story as the first one. We get the characters that we love but we play a brand new story. Yes, we lose some characters that we love, some sooner than most fans would have wanted. However, this is a plot based on revenge. How is the game supposed to start without a motive for this kind of plot?

The game stays true to the characters, the game has brilliant story telling that will keep you at the end of your seat and ensure that your controller is covered in sweat. The ending is controversial, that much is true. I was upset at first but after thinking of the characters involved and how their choices were influenced, the ending is justified.

Play this game if you love plots and characters that drive the story of this world forward. Play this game if you want to experience something that will grip you and touch your emotions. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sorry for my bad english but i have to tell my opinion after finish the game (I bought the collector).
I find that the game makes the events of the 1 completely useless and meaningless, the characters act in a completely ridiculous and insane manner, everything that we liked in the 1 is absolutely no longer present in this game, we pass half of the game playing a character that we hate without any charisma that seems far too forced, all that to end on a conclusion that is the opposite of something satisfactory ... There are so many gores scenes created to "shock" the player that after a while they lose all their impact and leave you completely numb.

The game is beautiful but it is not the most beautiful game ever created as some say, and although the animations are clean and worked, they are far from being as perfect and fluid as the gameplay of E3. Level gameplay apart from adding the dogs, it's exactly the same formula and the same game design as the first ...

In general I find that this game does not have 1 / 10th of the impact and the quality of narration that the first had, I do not know what Druckmann smoked when he said to have finished the game a lot and cried each time, because personally I felt absolutely no attachment to the story and to the new characters and I found certain scenes so cliché that it made me look up in the sky

I'm afraid of the future of Uncharted when I see what has become of this license, the studio that created this game seems to be totally different and the opposite of the Naughty Dog who made the games I grew up with and which I will remember all my life

I hated the choices made, I hated some of the characters, and at times it was hard to watch. But that was it's strenght too. Never have I clutched my controller as hard as this, never have I sobbed over a character dying like i did with this one, never have i been on the edge of my seat quite like this.

Halfway through the game, when the switch is made, I wanted to throw her off a cliff. My friends and I joked how I just let myself get shot over and over and I was genuinely upset. How could they? I understood Abby's reasons but her method was just too much. They went too far and how was I ever going to sympathise with her. She went from being a hollow enemy to a character with depth, that even after finishing the game leaves me wondering what's next for her.

I wasn't sure who to root for, i wasn't sure of anything.

I think if a game can make a lot of people hate this strongly, you have to also see that it means that it's strong enough to cause such extreme emotions. This was a ride, and I'm sure i'll be thinking about it for a long while.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay so this is my first time publicly reviewing a game, and i wasn't intending to do so but i feel like owe this game some justice and have to defend it since it's getting review bombed for absolutely no reason. This is a masterpiece, clearly one of the best if not the best playstation game of all time. A huge improvement from the first game, gameplay wise, graphics wise and even the story is better. We can clearly see the evolution of the characters between the first and the second game, they have matured and are far more complex than in the first game. I get that Joel dying in the first few hours of the game must be a huge turn-off. But this game is all about revenge and it delivers its objective. I found it absolutely intelligent and smart to let you play as both Ellie and Abby because in doing so, you can relate to them and you can clearly see why they both did what they did. Abby wanted to avenge her father. Ellie wanted to avenge Joel, each one of them clearly had a valid reason to justify the atrocity and brutality of the events that happen in the game. I felt each and every bullet coming out of my bullet. I felt every bullet getting in my body. I COULD relate to these characters. Now the infected added a whole thing to the game, killing them was as challenging and scary as ever, i still cannot get over the huge infected with multiple heads, i was terrified. Thank you Naughty Dog, thank you Neil Druckmann. You've made us happy in a really tough time. The game is polished as it should, and clearly looks great. I don't mind games getting delayed if the end result is going to be as amazing as this. A masterpiece. Expand

Yeah, there are some plot holes

    Verdict:
From the technical point of view, ND is doing great job on the hardware they are developing for (and always did). Gamedesign and the gameplay is (as expected) fun, brutal, satysfiing and has its weight in players hands.

I found both Ellie and Abby to be wonderfully well written characters, two sides of the same coin..I absolutely dispised Abby to begin with but by the ending i needed her to survive. The supporting characters Dina and Lev were wonderful, fully fitting in with their companions with ease. And making you root for them to be the positive influence that both Ellie and Abby needed.
The accessibility settings blew me away, I'm fortunate that I can play without them but the fact that they are so intensive means this game is truly accessible to nearly ALL gamers. Cant wait to jump back in and start it all over again... once I've recovered from the emotional rollercoaster that this game delivers.

When The Last of Us (part 1) came out, I fell in love with the game: the story, the characters, gameplay, the scenery, everything. The story of a father who lost his daughter, but then regains his fatherhood by saving a girl that could potentially be the basis for a way out of the apocalypse. The father, Joel, is a classical hero of the story, with whom the player identifies, because Joel is the survivor that takes risks to protect the most valuable, yet vulnerable person, Ellie, and fights against the badness of the world in order to save the world (finding a cure). You witness the father-daughter love forming between the two, which builds the core of the story. The end goal of the whole narrative was: Ellie, who is immune to the disease, could be the source for victory, the ending to the Cordyceps nightmare. She's the key. So I expected the Last of Us II would continue to develop this path: Joel and Ellie trying to save the world. Figuring out, how to make use of Ellie's immunity to fight the disease. With Joel, our hero, in the center of the story - together with his daugter. (SPOILERS!) But then TLoU2 came out and none... absolutely NONE of the expected happened. Joel gets brutally killed off by a transsexual nobody by walking in on a trap he would have never walked in in TLoU1. Then, Ellie tries to take revenge - and fails. In the contrary: The player is forced to play the killer of Joel, is forced to control the evil who has already won by killing the hero of the story. On top of this already awful continuation, Ellie outs herself as being gay, so the last hope for mankind by introducing her immune genes into the future genepool of humanity by giving birth to a lot of immune children, has died too. In short: Everything that made me love The Last of Us part 1 was thrown overboard in order to give space for a social justice propaganda sausage fest. None of it makes sense, none of it makes it fun to play. You'd think that during an apocalypse people would have higher priorities than gender identity, lesbian sexual intercourse after weed consumption and bad feelings from the past. The Last of Us 2 is basically as empty as a James Bond story where James Bond is killed in the beginning of the story: None of what follows makes sense anymore, except for the vengeance of his death, which, in the end, fails too, leaving a total vacuum behind. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay. Wow.
What can I say about this game... let's start with the positive. Graphically it's really great, and I think they've made the best out of this console generation. I love those games like Uncharted, Horizon or GoW where you can just stand here and look at the view.
Unfortunately, that's not everything in a game... And a really good game can also be ugly, just like a beautiful game can be bad.
Let's talk about gameplay. Despite it's an aging gameplay that fits well to this kind of play, we can see some improvements compared to 1, without distorting it. I rather liked it.
The problem is that this "soft" gameplay is acceptable in 1 because we are always emotionally affected by the game, and we want to take our time for everything. Which is clearly not the case in 2.
In addition to not being very dynamic (even if it's quite realistic, we must admit it) the gameplay is repetitive, boring, boring again. You don't have fun, and you don't really want to linger to finish this chore as quickly as possible.
And here we goes with the story... Joel... honestly? It's a shame what you did with it, and I was prepared for his death, but the way you did it...
And killed by Abby? Really? One of the random kids of one of the many random guys killed by Joel? That's the best you could come up with? How about an orphan club? They could even raise an army considering the number of guys I've murdered only in the firefly hospital.
We're forced to play Abby next, who has no charisma, nothing for her. We don't want to play her, less appreciate her, and they try to force us to love her, to have compassion for her, positive feelings... Force us to have feelings... Isn't that rape? Yes, it is. For me it was, it was really boring to play. And long! I couldn't take it anymore.
We're being forced to beat the crap out of Ellie, the last thing I wanted to do... which almost got me to shut down the game without finishing it anyway. Fortunatly you don’t force me to kill Joel, my PS4 would have fly over the window.

And then what? The end? After all of that? I almost expected at the farmhouse scene that Abby would become their best friend / neighbor. Scandalous, we went on a quest for revenge, only to have Ellie save her worst enemy and lose everything she had left in the process, including the last link she had with Joel?
Well done, well done, well done ><

All points of this note are for the incredible graphics, and the nostalgia of being back in this universe. At least for the first two hours of play.

TLOU has already demonstrated us the studio's ability to throw curve balls and poke the Amygdala but part 2 proves that they can also put you on your wit’s end by forcing you to make impossible decisions and then leaving you perplexed making you question yourself if it was morally correct. I sincerely believe naughty dog really outdid themselves and the whole industry with this part by crafting something that captures the true marrow of what we as humans are and can be. I think that the developers have transcended the idea of what a game should be and can be. They have democratized the characters and made them more humane, susceptible to everything a real-life person is. As for the characters, they are as real and raw now as they can be. Instead of the usual hero- villain roles the boundaries are blurred and marred with some much blood and gore that the roles become interchangeable and almost indistinguishable. The inspiration from GTA5 and Until Dawn is evident but the stories intertwingling with such complexity that both Abbey and Ellie become the opposite sides of the same coin.
I believe it is the kind of game that cannot be enjoyed with a preoccupied mind and a personal bias, with the expectations of a positive, cheerful and uplifting story like the last game. TLOU was the story of Joel exploring the themes of love, compassion and hope when everything around was miserable and bleak, TLOU2 is the opposite, Ellie exploring the feelings of revenge, hatred and above else guilt, even when everything around is in order, when everyone around is as loving as they can be. It is about coming to terms with everything that they had either done or witnessed. Above all it is a mature coming of age story in a post-apocalyptic world. It is the kind of game that will act as a milestone for all future games in terms of emotional depth and driving themes. It is the epitome of how deep into the void video games can descend. I feel betrayed not by the game but by the so-called loyal fans of the series. Life is not always fair and not everyone gets what they desire or deserve. The decision to depict that distress must have been hard for the studio itself but they did it anyways because they felt that it was the right thing to do and that is something not many people out there are prepared to make.
I sincerely believe most of the criticism is just unjust and is there because the game was spoiled for much of the fanbase. As for the complaints regarding all the agenda pushing, I believe it’s all a matter of double standards, on one side people laude unreleased games like Cyberpunk for its inclusivity but they harshly criticize TLOU2 for the same. And it was not as if it was done in a Rowling way, everyone who had played Left Behind already knew what was in store.
Making a generic storyline, with a happily lived ever after ending would have been more commercially successful and would have been in straighter alignment with the wider expectations. We all know it would have been a great commercial success and would have easily found its way into many of the year’s top games lists, but that would have been a commercial victory not an artistic one. I sincerely thank God that naughty dog decided otherwise. True artists please themselves not others and TLOU2 is artistic vision realized impeccably.

The game was as satisfying as expected.
I've been waiting for this game for seven years and I've had fun playing it.
I didn't want this game to do Hollywood storytelling.
The production team matched my taste well.

Expand

Killing main beloved character is cheap and unprofessional move. And then through the same cliches, justifying the killer’s actions, while forcing the player to spend another 20 hours playing on this character, is already simply disgusting. Expand

This is an incredible game. I can describe in words how much she impressed me with her quality, how many times I cried over her like a little child. The plot and characters are perfectly spelled out, each of which has its own motivation. Events of the past and present are perfectly intertwined, as everything is interconnected. It was very painful for me to watch the final game. it'sThis is an incredible game. Total waste of money. All the same game dynamics as the first part, but now you don't even have an engaging plot to follow. What is happening now in assessing this horror, stupid people came running and set 0 for killing Joel for the development of the plot. One and those comments, although in most of these people did not play further or did not play further than Joel’s murder. It must be a decisive decision at the end, at the moment a strong moment, this is the murder of Joel and the subsequent actions of Ellie. All that you have is clearly shown that this is nonsense.
Everything is in the game: the plot, the development of characters, the relationship between characters, sometimes of course there are minor flaws, but in general you do not pay much attention to this, the only minus is a torn plot at the end, but you can understand it after the final

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
