This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start this off by saying that I wanted to like this game. I was anticipating its release for the longest time. When it was postponed the second time, I was beyond sad. And when we got a new date, I was so damn happy. I wouldn't shut up about it when speaking to my friends, I kept saying that it would be the greatest game ever made by any company. When I got my hands on it, I was terrified that bad things would happen. I was unaware at the start that we would be lied to by the developers. How were we lied to, you ask? Well, in the trailers we were led to believe that we would be on an adventure with Joel again after all of the years of waiting. We would be getting revenge together for a common disturbance that needed to be rectified. But no, instead of Joel and Ellie speaking in the present, we only see flashbacks. In the teaser trailer, Joel grabs Ellie from behind and when she asks what he's doing here, he says "You think I'd let you do this on your own?" This is one of the main reasons I bought the game in the first place. After his death, we see this same scene again except Jesse is the one grabbing her from behind and saying the SAME EXACT LINE that Joel did in the teaser. In the "screenshots" released, Joel and Ellie's present models were used to make us think we'd be on an adventure with him again. But no, in the game the scenes were just flashbacks. What they did to deceive us, in my opinion, is unfair and heartbreaking. I feel utterly betrayed.

The story itself is built horribly, making us sympathize with the one who killed Joel. They even force us to play as her. IF we didn't have to play as her, if we had to find her and kill her, the game would've received a way different rating. The story still wouldn't be good, as I personally would've done Joel's death way different. Abby's character and motive to hurt Joel would've been more demented, instead of killing him.. kill someone he loves in retaliation. Say... Tommy. His character at the end of the game was a broken man anyway. If Jackson ever got compromised, he'd surely die with that horrible limp and impaired vision.

Ellie's decision to let Abby go in the first place is completely pointless. Many love to raise the argument that she did it because "revenge isn't the answer". Well, if that's the case, how do you justify what Abby did? She murdered Joel. Plain and simple. Joel did what he did out of love for Ellie, and Abby did what she did out of love for her own father. Why is it bad that Ellie would want the same thing?

"I'm gonna find . . . and I'm gonna kill . . . EVERY. LAST. ONE OF THEM. Except for the one who killed my father figure. She gets to live!"

Makes absolutely no sense to me.

    Here's my final thoughts:

If you leave a character with less than they started with, or with nothing; then you went absolutely nowhere. You took one step forwards, then two steps back. Ellie lost Joel, her stable relationship with Tommy, Dina and the baby, and her ability to play guitar(which was her only way that she could feel connected to Joel). Having her walk off into the woods makes me thing that Naughty Dog is considering a third game, and I hope they see this.

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE A THIRD. Your writers have already destroyed this story.

To the actors, I have nothing against you. I'm assuming you had no say in anything.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved TLOU 1. I bought this game the day it came out and avoided all spoilers and leaks beforehand.
Honesly, I did not like this game at all.
The story is literally pointless and absolutely depressing. Joel's death was poorly written. Joel survived so much hell in the first game. He was impaled and survived. He spent months being bed ridden. He fought so many bandits, fireflies, and infected and overcame all of it. All that feels so pointless if he just dies so easily two hours into the sequel. His fight for survival in the first game is cheapened since we see him die so easily after waltzing into the hand of the enemy.

Abby is mean and unpleasant. She has sex with Owen and acts like she doesn't care the next day even though he was in a relationship with a pregnant woman. I get they try to make us empathize with her. But honestly anyone with half a brain can understand why she did what she did. Joel killed her dad and dismantled the fireflies. We get it. We don’t have to play as her for half the game to understand that. Especially if she’s gonna be so coarse and bland the whole time. Abby has no chemistry with her friends (except Manny). She treats Owen like crap, she disrespects Mel's relationship, and once Manny is shot in the face she doesn't take even half a second to mention him or show some grief. Playing as her did not make me feel any worse for killing them.

Her arc of helping Yara is pointless because Yara dies an hour after you go through all that freaking trouble to cut her infected arm off. I did not want to play as Abby for half the game. I did not want to fight Ellie as Abby. I tried making Ellie kill me to see if that was an option but it was not. Playing as Abby was so draining and it made the pacing bad. I thought this game was Ellie's story! I did not sign up to play as a character with no personality who's story amounts to nothing. The whole California part is even more pointless. If Ellie did not go, Abby would have died at the Rattler base and Ellie would have kept her family and fingers. Her trip there makes no sense and is very stupid. And to make matters worse, they make you play guitar with missing fingers and it is literally so disturbing. Almost as disturbing as Abby's awful sex scene.

Also, I did not appreciate how Ellie and Dina have sex the day after their first freaking kiss. Who does that? Ellie is so madly in love with her but we don't have any reason to like her that much.
Jesse was the only character I liked aside from Joel and he is shot in the face out of nowhere and never spoken about again outside of some dumb collectible note. They just had to get rid of him so he could be out of the picture once the baby was born. He ends up just being a sperm donor. Which sucks because he was so nice to Ellie and was not bitter about her moving on with Dina.

I am trying to be fair by giving it a 5 because everything was good aside from the story. But the story is the most important thing in a game like this. By the end of the game I felt utterly unfulfilled. I didn't even like Ellie anymore. I wish it TLOU 2 did not exist and that we stopped after the first installment. So many people die in this game and it all amounts to nothing. This story amounts to nothing. Joel dies, Jesse dies, Tommy is divorced and crippled, Ellie is alone and missing fingers, and for what? What was the point of this? Honestly this is a demented, twisted, slaughter fest of a game and it really did not tell a compelling enough story to warrant being so dark.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If this had been multiplayer only I would have scored it much higher. Visually the game is gorgeous, I loved the gameplay from the first game and this one is very similar. I don't agree with some that it needs to evolve so much when you have dozens of first person shooters that use the same engines and don't feel very different to each other, there was only one Last of Us. If you enjoyed the gameplay mechanics from the first one there's no reason you wont enjoy this one too, I personally love the gameplay mechanics.
Unfortunately its impossible to play it and avoid the story, and if you are also a big fan of the first one you will quite likely be hugely disappointed by the direction they take in the second one. It feels very jolting which although I'm sure was their intention, it just takes too much away from the first one and doesn't build on it in a meaningful way. Their treatment of the characters we grew to love in my opinion is just horrible. The inclusion of representation (gender identity politics) feels forced and transparent which comes across both lecturey and unnecessary in a post apocolyptic world whereas games like Dragonage Inquisition were able to include it without having that effect. It also felt a bit immersion breaking to play as a female character that was obviously on steroids with hulking arms and legs - where does she get access to that much quality and quantity of food along with steroids in a post apocolyptic world where people are just trying to survive (the steroid physique is not an exaggeration). To be clear I have no issue playing as female characters and where choice is given I usually do just that, I chose to play as Kassandra on AC Odyssey.

As far as Last of Us gameplay goes again I feel that has remained in tact and improved, visually, functionally and shouldn't disappoint anyone familiar with and fond of the first, I would definitely buy a separate multiplayer if that's the route they choose to take.

So I had hopes the narrative wasn’t that bad after hearing everything, I did stay as spoiler free as I could until I finished the game, but wtf naught dog. Killing the main character from the previous game to make a revenge story was a good idea, however the execution was hot garbage. We go through all the work to take revenge as Ellie to then play as Abby the villain to make us see her side and, I’m assuming, make us feel for her. Which in someways it did for me, but then you make us continue to play as Abby when we confront Ellie forcing us to beat a beloved character which was a BOLD decision that backfired immensely with everyone’s feedback being the clear example that it was a garbage decision. Everything up to that point was, in my opinion, still leading up to be a fantastic game. But the decision, again, to make us fight Ellie and win, is when you lost me. Have you had a switch back to playing Aly when we got to that confrontation making us beat Abby, I would’ve been fine with rest Love it. If you want to still kill Jesse do it, mortality wound Tommy or kill him I wouldn’t of cared as long as we got to kill Abby. Heck you could’ve even killed off Lev as they were leaving the island so you wouldn’t of had to involve him at that point. But it felt like you wanted to drag on the story from that confrontation which is a load of BS in my opinion. You should’ve ended it at that final confrontation and ended peacefully with Ellie and Dina at the farm raising JJ. That could have been at the perfect finish for this game but you squandered it. Do you let Abby win by making us beat Ellie. You then make us play as Ellie again to go and kill Abby which when we get that chance we let her go, then for more insult to injury when we get back to the farm Dina is gone and we don’t even know if Ellie finds Fina and they potentially get back together raising JJ, you just end it there. Honestly, I think if you chose to ha e had Lev died while being strung up on the beach with Abby thus giving Ellie essentially a mercy killing but still a revenge killing would have been better then what you decided. But instead you choose to make us go through all that to forgive Abby through PTSD on Ellies side and when we get back to the farm we find out Ellie has basically lost she loved even her ability to play the guitar correctly which is minor I know but still. I don’t even wanna play new game+ because there’s no satisfaction at the end. It just sucks because it feels like you had a very great story building up to the moment the Ellie and Abby confrontation happens, but when it does it seems you just took a dump on the story. The game itself is beautiful I appreciate the gameplay and how it is a even though it’s very repetitive, it just sucks that when you get that climax it feels like you’re falling down Mount Everest with no chance of stopping until you hit the bottom. I doubt it will even happen but I feel like you need to pull a BioWare and fix the ending like they did for Mass Effect 3 even if it’s just an alternate ending like choosing to play as either Abby or Ellie at the climax. Or just don’t make us play as Abby, the villain, and let us play as Ellie and beat Abby.

I was really excited to play this game, I’ve been waiting for it for the longest and it just didn’t live up to the hype. The LOU1 should’ve been left alone. Really didn’t like playing have the game as Abby after what she did. That was really disappointing. Also I understand the explanation of the Ending but it’s just frustrating. Idk why the game creators didn’t after more input from the diehard fans. I’m just so disappointed overall. Besides that the game play is really good and the graphics are great. I enjoyed the fighting scenes. For that I give it a 5 out of 10. I wish I knew how it would play out before hand so I wouldn’t have spend the money to get it. Highly recommend waiting for used or once it goes on a deep discount to get it if interested. Expand

This is one of the stupidest narratives I've ever encountered in gaming and the way they pull it off makes it even dumber. The game thinks its smart and hypocrites might think it is.(Like its totally cool to kill hundreds of ppl in this game in some of the goriest ways imaginable because this game is against violence.) But in reality it is a tribute to violence, a wolf in sheeps clothing.

The graphics, animation, sound and acting is amazing though. So it's like Speed Racer or Tron:Legacy. A visually stunning product without any merit to its core.

But you can certainly enjoy the game if you dont give a **** about in game characters and the stupid narrative pushed on you and you embrace your inner psycho.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part 2 is the most disappointing game I have ever played. Now I’m not calling this a garbage game in total. This game just has some of the WORST story decisions I have ever seen. Now I know I’m missing a lot of key characters and moments but I’m covering the standout moments. Let’s start from the beginning. The whole game is fine up until you start playing as Abby, a brand new character we have never seen before. It’s only for about 40 mins in the first 3 hours of the game but still. Then around that 2-3 mark you see that Abby and her crew kill Joel. This is the worst part of the entire game. To kill off a character in that type of way with that lazy of writing is pathetic. After Ellie witnesses this, she goes of to Seattle. For the next 10 hours you go on a journey to hunt down each person that was involved in the murder of Joel. I really enjoyed this part of the game, and it is by far my favorite part of the entire game. Once Ellie kills two of the remaining people that were involved with Joel, she heads back to the theater which she is staying. When she gets there with Tommy, Dina and Jesse are waiting there. Jesse and Ellie talk and then Abby enters the building and kills Jessie and badly hurts Tommy. This is another stupid part of this game. Ellie could have killed Abby right then and there but no, the story has to go on, that’s something that doesn’t stop in this game. So then we play as Abby for next 10 hours of the game and witness her side and why she wanted to kill Joel. I’m not even going to talk about this part. This was not the Last of us. It was like a DLC. After we play as Abby we beat the **** out of Ellie for no reason and just leave. Months have passed and Ellie has a family with Dina. Tommy shows up and tells Ellie where Abby is. She goes after her only to not ****ing kill her. Ellie spends this ENTIRE GAME killing ****ing everything just to not kill Abby???? Like why? Basically the ending is that Ellie returns home and Dinas gone. She lost two fingers in the fight with Abby and now can’t play the guitar, the only thing left that Joel could pass on. That’s it. The end. So Abby wins and Ellie lost. Now the flashbacks were ****ing amazing. Loved each one. The gameplay and the visuals were truly amazing. To sum it up, gameplay 10/10. Visuals 10/10. Story 3/10. It’s not as bad as people say it but the story really drags it down like A LOT. Finial rating for The Last of Us Part II is a 5/10. Expand

I specifically created this account JUST to rate this game!!! No, I am not a 'review-bomber' or Russian bot, contrary to what the gaming press or ND may tell you lol.

I've been a gamer for over half my life and The Last of Us 1 is one of my favorite games of all time. This game is such a radically different departure from what made that game great, and not in a good way.

For one, the narrative is SUPER disjointed. There are time jumps all over the place and we are introduced to many, many new characters that we are supposed to care about, but there is very little to no development whatsoever invested in building these characters up. It's almost as if they are only there to drive the story forward.

Neil and Gross, it seems, have deliberately shoe-horned their own ideologies into this, and it shows. Big time.

Let me say, I do not mind playing as a female character. I don't even mind that the character is homosexual. Fine. But there is a very clear motivation in this game's story (without getting too much into spoilers), to present and almost force, social justice issues. It's uncomfortable, unrealistic, and comes off as straight up silly considering this is supposed to be taking place in a future apocalypse!!!

The game's presentation is really its only redeeming quality. The graphics, sound, gameplay, music, and voice acting are all top notch. However, this is weighed down significantly by the weak narrative and extended gameplay sections that feel forced and bloated.

I honestly do not know how so many critics gave this a glowing 10 out of 10. To me, that is just mind boggling. Clearly, there is a bias and I believe it involves a combination of things- access media (companies wanting to be on good terms with Sony), and the political motivations shared by the overall gaming press that are highly skewed and misrepresentative of gamers as a whole

It sparked tons of bad controversy and hate on the Internet. There is no likable characters, everyone seems to be purposefully uglified and twisted to amplify the uncanny tone of the game.
On the other hand, the game is a technical marvel, a milestone in visual and gameplay design, which kept me going until the very end and wanting more. Amazing lighting, atmosphere and environmental design. Attention to details is phenomenal. Combat is so perfect that playing anything else after this feels like kinder garden. Many thanks to people at Naughty Dog who actually work on creating quality content and push game industry further and further, despite the allegedly toxic working conditions and lunatic supervisors

Simply put: We were expecting an amazing story and got a really bad story.

Graphically the game is one of the most appealing in the PS4. The animations are smooth and the integration with cutscenes is also phenomenal. The sound mixing is also perfect. I didn't found any bug or glitch in my playthrough.

The main problem is the story:

The first game had great graphics and an amazingly strong story: it was fairly predictable and simple in the end but they managed to delivered us some unforgettable moments between the characters and the harsh reality of a post-apocalyptic world. There was no plot-holes nor moments where any action by the characters wasn't justified.

In Part II, they forgot all of it. Too many unjustified actions by the main characters: they behave very differently compared to the first game, even "experienced" characters that were present in the first game seem to know nothing about how the Last of Us world works (rational vs emotional). Lots of plot-holes and the dangers presented in the post-apocalyptic world sometimes seem that they don't exist.

If I had to explain the story to someone that never heard of Last of Us I would say that the story is " a college project where 5 people wrote each part and in the end they tried to glue everything together".

Also it makes no sense for us to play at least 10 hours as the "villain" and even fight the main-character. I understood why: they wanted us to form a connection with the villain and give us the backstory and his/hers motivation. But the "villain" is a rigid and unempathetic character. Too stiff and afraid of everything. Like many people I was unable to have any affection.

It was so bad. It's like you picking up your favorite team in FIFA and the game forces you to play against it.

Also the gameplay is 75% equal to the first game. The default difficulty is too easy imo. You'll get bored fast especially if you played the first game

The first time ever I review a game , but this was worth it , first of all I am a hardcore fan of tlo 1 , I completed like 6 times , so I was beyond hyped of this game , I didn't get any spoilers I mean I kinda know Joel would die , but It was pretty obvious why would ellie want revenge rather than that , well I'm going to the point the game eat first is brilliant I mean some of the writing was wrong like why would Joel accept going why abby , nuyt ok , it was necessary to make us hate so much abbys character, but the second half of the game is where I started hating this game I mean why the game forces us to play someone we hate so much , and like 10 hours! Or more I was so stressed playing abbys part that I wanted to finished asap I mean there's nothing interesting told besides that scene where joel kill his father , and the thing that broke me up , is that no one the things you have done in the game matters , that pig kills ellie's most loved one and let her go alive after cutting his fingers this was the most unsatisfying ending I've experienced, I want a doc where you can kill abby , I there's a tlo3 with abby I would never buy that **** Expand

    Reception

Not an ideal story for a game, given the public's interaction with the piece, but could see it in a book or a TV show. It delivers on it's purpose, the message that vengeance is bad, but it's the wrong universe given the setup from the last game. A wild change of tone, one especially harmful for some gamers, since you have to play as the "opposite character", not just view from their perspective. I feel like the message was forced onto a story already well founded for a different type of message. Anyway felt like a lost opportunity for me.

    Character Development

    Background
Regarding character development the first game presented Joel, a man surviving "apocalypse" while still struggling to forget his past, doing what he thought was correct based on his moral background by, amongst other decisions, not being able to trade Ellie for humanity; not a hero neither an antihero or a villain, just a man who had motives justified enough, builted during the whole game, to do what he did.

    Contrast
Now, complaints about Part II shouldn’t be about the story development (despite you can dislike) rather the execution of it and how you justify the decisions of your characters and the progress of the story overall, which has been incohesive or, as I see it, motives to justify each character's decisions have not been shown in the game and are assumed as "time has passed" which is a cheap way to mask lack of funds to produce it or lack of talent or experience to deliver it. Therefore, to sell this as top quality product (and work of art) is not acceptable. Besides that, an advertising that hyped it’s public in a misleading way has also affected the public's expectations and, therefore, it’s reception.

    Gameplay

Gameplay does not disappoint despite the frequent encounters with the same type of enemies with slight variations, and the excessive need of search for resources, thanks to the many tools given to the player. Despite including new features, like jump or prone position on characters, puzzles and areas that can be resolved in more varied ways, upgrades both to abilities and weapons, it does not bring too much to the table when compared to other games in the same genre. Minor bugs, the slow movement of the camera and other aspects may be an inconvenience from time to time but the amount of options regarding these and others aspects make up for them.

    Graphics

As far as graphics go and given that this game is limited to consoles the performance sustains the amazing visuals without much effort and offers a view worthy of a background, with some exceptional moments when this quality drops slightly though not enough for the player to notice without a closer look into specific details, such as certain animations (jumping for example), a slight downgrade from the trailer in specific areas and very, very rare bugs.

    Sound
Music, environment, sound effects and voice acting are flawless. Every line, every gunshot, every impact add a very heavy weight to immersion that is only eclipsed by these game’s reliance on story telling that drives you out of this world from time to time.

    Summarize

Being a Story Based Driven Game it relies much more in writing quality than many other games; all pacing, narrative, character development, have a significant role in driving the player to interpretate the message below the cover. in this particular case ND have set for themselves a bar too high to reach for the sake of forcing one particular message into a universe not previously thought for it, into an audience that require a different type of narration than other types of media now a days (like novels, TV shows, movies, etc.). Despite the controversies surrounding this game in particular there is no denying that either due to their objective, marketing, writing, messages or all of these together this product and work of art is as far from being a masterpiece as it is from being a colossal disaster.

My final reception of the game is 5.5/10 but I must settle on a 5 for this review scale.

However, parts of the story were lacking to me and certain parts just seem tedious because of the constant flashbacks from two different characters. Believe it or not I went into this game spoiler free and had no idea of what was going to happen. I will say that during the confrontation between Abby and Ellie, I felt pretty angry that I had to play as Abby and I assumed the worst. I would just look away from the screen and tap the square button just forcing the inevitable. Surprisingly they didnt kill Ellie off there and dragged on. At the end they decide not to complete the quest that the entire game leads up to! Leaving the fan base empty handed on theyre blood thirst for revenge. 5 out of 10 from me. I expected different! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although I haven't played the game yet, but judging from the playthrough on youtube, I think this game is not bad but not good either. I like where they're trying to go with the story with the whole revenge plot but it could've been a lot better than this. The first game ended with joel's lie to Ellie and Joel's action in the end. The second game is the consequences of Joel's action in the last game. Joel's death could've been done way better than it did. I think playing as Abby for 12 hours was so unnecessary. After what Abby did to Joel, they made Abby like one of the most hated video game character of all time. So no matter what she did in the story, nothing will ever change our mind on her. In the end Ellie goes head on with Abby, she then has flashes of Joel then decided to spare Abby after she bit her fingers, we don't like that. Then Ellie goes back home, she can't play the guitar then roll credits. Here's what I think about the ending. Ellie sparing Abby in the end was a huge mistake, then what was it all for, Ellie fought her way to this point for nothing. Although the game was trying to teach us a lesson, revenge never ends well for anyone, Ellie could've lived a happy life with Dina and JJ. But instead, she went on to hunt for Abby. After she went back home, Dina left her and now she's all alone. I kinda liked how it ended but hated it at the same time, so I have mixed feelings towards this game, it's good but it's so bad at the same time. The graphics, facial animation, dialogue was on point. Definitely stunning and one of the most beautiful graphics I've ever seen in a video game. But Uncharted 4 was a bit better. Attention to detail was amazing, and the references was fantastic. So in conclusion, this game was alright, could've been alot better, the story was not good and not bad it was whatever but it was a disappointment for alot of people, it did not exceed my expectations and many other fans but for me it was whatever. The graphics, the score and the gameplay are some of the best that I've ever seen/heard. The only catch is the plot. Joel's death is far-fetched, as well as the ending, and playing as Abby for half of the game was extremely boring, not because of her sections itself, but just for the character, for which I have a profound contempt for and won't ever feel for her.
Despite that, I really loved the flashbacks with Joel and Ellie. I think they are the most interesting thing out of the entire story.

But Ellie doesn't kill the one person who tortured Joel and spares her because revenge is bad. You play as Joel's killer. They destroy Joel and Ellie's relationship. Need I go on? Graphics are great, gameplay is really good. But who writes this garbage story?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having played through the game twice now, I can say that the Last of US 2 is a very strange experience and one that has clearly divided players and fans alike. I make this distinction between the two as I feel the game provides a difference experience for both and as a result will define your overall view of the game. Essentially I feel that Part 2 was not written as a game but as movie. It employs shock tactics, gratuitous violence against loved characters and emotive scenes to create an experience on a level not scene before in gaming , but more akin to TV shows such as Game of Thrones and the Walking dead. I say a movie as in-between the numerous cutscenes you pretty much do the same thing, explore each area clearing enemies via stealth or shoot outs in an identical manner to the first, the gameplay in many respects has not evolved at all from the first albeit a brief car and horse chase and use of a boat for parts of the game (however the game is visually stunning). The gameplay seems like filler and essentially something to do whilst you are watching a film. In my personal view it is this story that is this issue for many. The main problem is that part 1 and it’s DLC was so successful as it focused on the relationships between well developed characters (Ellie and Joel and Ellie and Riley) to great effect and created a story that fans became heavily invested in. This level of success is simply not achieved in part 2.The Last of Part 2 seems to destroy these characters for shock value and twists for the sake of a lesson about revenge and violence which has in all honesty been done many times before, especially if you have watched the aforementioned TV shows.
Many fans were expecting and led to believe that there would be a continuation of the previous story they loved so much but were in fact given the opposite and understandably feel aggrieved. Players who aren’t so invested in the characters, new to the series or who did not resonate with the Characters actions or relationship in the previous game may however have an entirely different take and really enjoy the game.
The second issue is the antagonist come protagonist Abby. Again many fans do not simply like this character. Her first act is to kill Joel in brutal fashion and become the catalyst for Ellie’s revenge and the first section of the game . The player is then made to play as Abby in the second half whilst we attempt to understand her motives and back story which lead to her actions. It is here for many that the writers fail to convey enough sympathy to fans for the character to mean anything, apart from someone they still want to exact revenge on (which does not happen). Changing an antagonist to a protagonist is a difficult feat and one that may have needed an entire game on its own to do. The ending itself may leave many feeling unsatisfied and it is continuing this story (if ND decide to do this at all) that will be challenging itself as many feel the heart has been taken out of the series.

As I see it the success of part one was in its 2 main ingredients Elle and Joel. These special ingredients have been used up in part 2 to create an experience not seen before in gaming, but now that’s it. Without them the series now feels like just another generic apocalypse scenario going forward. At the end Ellie is left alone and maimed and appears to have no further use other than to track or be tracked down by the fireflies (Probably Abby and Lev) and sacrifice herself for a chance or a cure, which to many diminishes the whole point of the first game.
There is no doubt that this title has caused huge debate not seen before on a game and if that was ND’s aim then they have succeeded. However I can’t help but feel saddened that such great characters which fans could have enjoyed further adventures with (as this is meant to be a game after all ) will never happen. I don’t feel that this game deserves such low or high scores (ignoring all the hateful comments) and feel that they detract away from the things that players and fans love/hate about the game. My overall view is that it is a venture worth experiencing but one that may not be to everyone’s liking and I personally wish that the Joel/Ellie adventure had not concluded in such a way. The flashbacks were my favourite part and the ending left me unsatisfied and craving more of the magic that we had in part 1. It is a game at the end of the day which is meant to be fun and I simply didn’t have that feeling come it’s conclusion. However my own experiences in life and the job I do mean that I look to games as a form of escapism and fun. Others may enjoy the “bleak real to life apocalypse story” hence why we are seeing such stark reviews.

It's not terrible, mind you, but it's not good either. Let's get the positives out of the way: combat is fine, it's basically the same as it was in TLoU 1. Graphically this game is stunning, it's amazing what the devs were capable of doing with the PS4.

With the positives out of the way, let's get into the negatives. The game feels less like a game and more like a movie simulator, and in a bad way. While it's not awful, it seems like some cutscenes just go on, and on, and never end. While the combat itself is fun, the way the game generally plays is...medicore at best, with long sections of nothing punctuated with combat encounters. And then there's the story. Oh, dear lord, the story.

There's so many plotholes, so many instances where characters survived wounds that would have killed characters in the first game. The concept of the story itself is fine, but it was executed so poorly that it destroys the game's value. Almost all of the new characters, if not all of them, that are introduced in this game die. Almost all of the old characters, and all of the old characters that most people care about (aside from Ellie) die. This game would have been like, a 6 or a 7/10 if it weren't for the absolutely awful ending. The story, literally, had no point. That's this game. You do everything, get to the end, and it's for nothing. Literally, and in the game's plot.

Incredibly convoluted and rather unsatisfying by the time I finished it, it pretty much had no sense of achievement, fun-factor, emotion or flow compared to the masterfully written first instalment. The game definitely had its moments that were intense, but as a whole didn’t really add onto the quality of the overarching story, not to mention the really strange pacing issues at times.

The marketing and build up for this game was very misleading, and I won’t mention any spoilers - read the other reviews for spoilers, but those who know will know what I mean. The 'perfect' scores from big corporate review companies really do also highlight the unfortunate monopoly that a lot of these game companies have, the whole 'review copy' and embargo restrictions are topics of conversation that can be discussed to great lengths.

I can’t seem to understand Naughty Dog’s business tactic here, they definitely have the capabilities and money to produce a world-class game, I’m really confused about why Druckmann and his writing team would opt to go for such a ‘controversial’ story, that wasn’t even written very well in the first place - all to then slate the fans who didn’t ‘see’ the game for what it was on the internet? It doesn’t seem like a very profitable decision to me, not just from a financial perspective, but for reputation of the company. I am also very aware of the rumours of controversy behind the working conditions, Amy Hening getting fired etc. so maybe the studio is just not what it once was...

I genuinely do feel bad for the people at the company who dedicated the last 7 years designing one of the best looking and sounding games I’ve played so far, to go through all that effort in vain for such a disappointing story that I can infer for such a renowned studio could’ve only been a result of things like big disagreements, lack of input from a wide range of creators and poor management.

My score is in the yellows and not the reds purely for the incredible elements of the game mentioned at the beginning of my review, but without them, the game really does suffer from an incredibly disappointing narrative - the legacy of the first game has really been thrown down the drain for many fans.

I was admittedly bothered by all the premature hate of the game, and the negative reviews bombing this site within minutes of it being released. My rating was a 10/10, and after finishing it I realize that was a mistake. I will focus mainly on the story, because that’s where most of the issues I have are at. Joel’s death had a major impact on me, my heart was racing and my hands were shaking after that scene. It felt like I was about to be taken on an emotional journey with Ellie, because as the player I could feel her anger. But to my surprise, that journey was cut short at the half way point of the game. Going back in time to play as Abby was disruptive to the flow of the story, and muddied the waters by introducing too many extra characters. It took away from what could have been longer, more expansive flashback scenes with Joel and Ellie. Contrasting her extreme, violent and vengeful present with a more relaxed past at Jackson. By the time I played through the second half of the game, I wasn’t very invested in how it all ended. It felt anticlimactic and disappointing, a mere fraction of what the story had the potential to be. Writers these days seem to be so overly obsessed with subverting expectations, that they allow it to take away from the quality of what they’re creating. It’s unfortunate that people drowned out the airwaves with hateful nonsense, because now the creators will brush off every constructive criticism that is given. Which will probably lead to the same mistakes being made when they inevitably develop TLOU3.... Expand

I waited so long for the successor and was unfortunately disappointed.
Joel's death was very frightening, but unfortunately predictable in my eyes. Ellie's revenge is therefore "justified". During the time you played Ellie, I had a lot of fun with the game and the flashbacks made the game perfect for me ...
But then there was the switch to Abby ...
From this point on the game only hurt in the heart. Why should I have fun playing the character who killed my beloved Joel ??
Ellie got a soul from Joel and I loved that about her so much. But then you play the psycho monster Abby and it's just cruel.
Now a few words to the end: I've never had a more unsatisfactory ending in a game than in The Last of Us Part II.
It may be that the developers wanted to make it clear that revenge is never worth it because Ellie ultimately lost everything, but that makes the end of the game so incredibly unsatisfactory.
My expectations were huge ... and they were smashed to the ground.

Beautiful game. A true technical masterpiece. The story suffered some problems early in the game that made the crux of the plotline drag on with a nihilistic tone. I certainly did not gasp, cry, or get got lost in the story of this installment. as I did in the first one.

Lots of things that don't truly add up and character inconsistencies. Joel was bound to die, obviously, but two hours into the game? And it's a very quick scene, lacking symbolism. The game then tries to mask Ellie and Joel as terrible people, while making an effort to bring sympathy for Abby. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II takes place 4 years later after the events of the first game. Joel and Ellie are living in a growing community in Wyoming. We see some old characters and some new ones. But after some later events an important death takes place (will go into spoilers later) that sets Ellie into “Revenge Mode”. The majority of the game takes place in Seattle where Ellie seeks revenge. In Seattle you find yourself in conflict between the WLF (Washington Liberation Front) and the violent cult Scars who are at war between each other. But that won’t stop Ellie from finding the person who wronged her. Now in this part of the review I will be doing a pros and cons list of everything I liked about the game and what I didn’t like about the game.(SPOILERS!!!)

    PROS:
First things first, I have just to say that this game had some beautiful set pieces in it. This is by far the best looking PS4 game.
There were a lot of improvements on the gameplay which I really liked. The flashback scenes between Joel and Ellie were my favorite parts in the whole game. Those scenes were the most well written scenes in the game. Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson performances when they were together. The satisfying upgrades you did on all your weapons. I really liked how you could explore the environment around you. You get rewarded with looking all over the place for supplies and collectibles. I like how the enemy AI had more emotion to them. They were also more intelligent when it came to the point where it turned into a shootout. Still had some of its horror elements like the first one had. And I really liked taking on the infected (even though I got frustrated with them and died a lot but still enjoyed taking them on).

Cons: The story wasn’t compelling as the first one. It was your basic revenge plot with telling you that you need revenge and in the end it tells you that revenge is bad. Over time the game just got really tedious and repetitive. The pacing of the game was really slow. After playing it for 5 hours straight I got bored of it and had to encourage myself to continue. The game was way longer than it needed to be.
You play as the villain Abby for a LONG amount of time. Playing as Abby was my least favorite part of the game. I didn’t mind playing as her at some moments, like having her flashback and learning her motive. Didn’t mind that. When playing as Abby, the game forces you to sympathize for her and give you a better understanding of her. But my feelings for her never changed. I still saw her as the villain. Even after Understanding her motive, I still thought it could’ve been a better motive to kill Joel. It’s a motive that we’ve seen before.
The writing wasn’t as good as the first one. It felt kinda lazy at some points. Some of the new characters weren’t interesting. It felt like they were just there. When they died I didn’t feel sad or anything because I had no attachment to them like the characters I had attachment for in the first game. The characters I was mostly interested in were Lev and Yara because they were members of the cult Scars and you got to see they’re way of life. But really you don’t understand the cult.
With that leading me to this, I got to see the intentions of WLF but never got to understand the Scars motive and intentions. All I learned is that they were insane and would kill people thinking that would cleanse them. That's the only part I got from them. But I never knew what they’re intentions were in the beginning and what led them to be who they are. Now, the ending. The ending to me felt really cliche. Like I said in the beginning, the game in the end tells you that revenge is bad. Because of that Ellie lets Abby go even though Ellie had the upper hand in the final fight. In that moment I still wanted payback for what Abby did. In the end Ellie returns back and is all alone. From what it looks like, it seems that they’re setting it up for a third game which I hope doesn’t happen. The Last of Us is one of the best video games of all time. But with a sequel like Part 2 it doesn’t live up to the first one. It fails to meet the expectations of the fans. You have lazy writing, a basic premise, bland characters, and a way too long campaign. Now did I hate this game? Absolutely not. There were still things I enjoyed about the game. It’s not a bad game nor an amazing game. It was just a poor follow up to the first one. But I still enjoyed it. And because of that, I’m giving this game a 5.5/10. Thank you for reading this review.

This is one of those games where a sequel should not exist. Yet, it's here. The trailer for this game pointed a story in a completely different direction, should I say misleading? So, how should I rate this game? What is this game even about?

It is a game where gamers are more interested in the story rather than the gameplay itself although the two are pretty close. Yes, the graphics and combat are high up there, but that is to be EXPECTED since it's a sequel. What needs to match up is the story! And that is where it falls apart.

I do not care about the situation behind the writing of this game, what they presented is all that matters. And what's presented is garbage. It is a story of duality, one where Ellie is on a supposed downtrodden revenge quest while Abby learns to sympathize others(??). Some critics say that Ellie's quest hurt those around her YET, her friends are the ones that THEY THEMSELVES go with her. Abby's companions are persuaded by Abby herself...

Imagine seeing a revenge story UNFULFILLED. It's like watching John Wick not killing the last person or something. Also, a game with flashbacks within flashbacks is not a good story. Ending the game with a flashback is not a good story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fair warning I created an account specifically to review this game,

    Pros:

1.Beautiful game graphically, truly amazing and a nice end to this console generation

    2.Beautiful soundtrack and ambience

3.Fantastic Mo-cap and voice acting, as to be expected give the actors and ND's previous games

4.I really do love a game that respects the power of a firearm even if combat aiming is a little jank

    Cons:

1.This is a story driven game that is awfully paced and a slog to get through

2.The combat/stealth loops in this game are extremely repetitive and after 7 years does not feel like its evolved enough beyond a go prone option.

3.I can't help but feel Druckmann believes he's created a masterpiece, akin to a Cormack McCarthy novel or Coen Bros movie. The theme is nihilism but the thing that made the first game so good was the levity and moments of hope that kept Joel going. None of that exists here its all gloom

4.Deceptive marketing of the game, Joel's character models have changed from the marketing images used, you can also in fact slaughterer dogs despite press releases claiming otherwise.

5.Horrific abuse of the DMCA laws to strike anyone and everyone who discussed the games leaks

6.Abby as a character was not humanised at all well before her introduction to other major characters, her character model also looks ridiculous, she is twice the size of half the men in the game, this is an apocalypse, where is she finding the supplements to maintain this figure?

You feel no attachment to any newly introduced characters in this entire game they are all 2D and unlikable and/or die before you get a chance. I feel like had they marketed this game from the start as Abby and Lev, humanised them for hours, dropped hints about her father along the way, then met Joel and have him meet his end with a bit more dignity, not have him and Tommy blurt out intimate details completely out of character it would be far more forgivable.

Being a story driven game, TLOU2 is one of the biggest disappointments of the current console generation. It's not that I don't agree with certain story decision. They just executed it poorly. NONE of the characters live up to the quality of the first game. The plot is manipulative, way too overcrowded with subplots and unnecessary love triangles. While exploring the game world and discovering all the tiny secrets is fun, I hated to see how the story unfolded.

Some details to explain why I really didn't like the story:

Abby: I get what they were going for. And I'm not mad because she kills Joel. But making me hate her for 15 hours and then make me play this character did not help. Maybe they should have made her playable earlier into the story so I can understand everything BEFORE things happen. Playing her that late into the game didn't make me care about her. I hated this character and after finishing the game I still do. Furthermore, this does not change the fact that Abby is a straight up psychopath! Torturing a guy to death that just saved your life, sleeping with your friends boyfriend, wanting to kill a pregnant woman (knowingly) and giving a **** about all her friends. But hey, she pets some dogs...

    Joel: We don't trust strangers....

Elie: She knew Joel lied to her at the end of the first game, didn't she? Now she's mad? Oh and remember the lighthearted, optimistic and caring girl? She's gone! Still better than Abby as she shows immediate reactions to killing innocent people AFTER beging attacked.

Jesse: Only likeable character gets shot for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

    Tommy: Survives a headshot.

And what's wrong with pregnant women in this world?

    And so on...

TLOU2 is a technical masterpiece and a fun game to play. But to experience the "story" is frustrating and angering. What were they thinking?

Joel and Ellie are villains now, in fact they are the worst people in what’s left in America, Joel especially. Man do they get that point across. Also you play as this new girl who may or may not have killed Joel for half the game. This new girl ultimately is about to kill Ellie half way through the game for killing her best friends earlier. Then you spend the next half of the game as this new girl killing the rest of her friends because she met this girl who thinks she is a boy who saved her. Ultimately this girl-boy convinces This new girl to not kill Ellie Despite the fact that she-he accompanies her all the way there to Ellie’s hideout knowing full well what the plan was. Despite having been let off the hook twice by this new girl, Ellie still goes for revenge at the request of Tommy who survived a point blank gunshot to the head. Honestly I didn’t think the player reviews would be true, but man this game made no sense and was all over the place. No me jodáis. Nada mas pasarme el juego reconozco que me pareció el final buenísimo, pero días después de razonarlo bien, sinceramente una decepción. Expand

(because if abby had killed ellie, joel would’ve **** her up so fast). but i think ellie didn’t kill abby because she realized that lev would be affected the same way she was (ellie said “just take him” and not something like “just go and live”) and that ellie’s mental state would’ve decreased knowing she did the exact same things as abby - because ellie is a good person. and abby is not. abby spent years of her life waiting and planning to kill - torture - joel and took pleasure from it and was not affected in the slightest afterwards. when she knew dina was pregnant she looked pleased when she was about to kill her. **** psychopath. ellie was so blinded by her need for revenge that she did **** up things too - don’t get me wrong. when she tortured nora, she was visibly shaken afterwards because she’s still human. when she found out mel was pregnant after killing her she was physically sick and messed up because she’s still human - as one should be. but abby? that **** a cyborg.
it’s not a terrible dog **** game - it’s just a game that many people don’t like - because of abby. the last of us is my favorite and abby messed this up for me. also petition for ashley johnson to get an award for this. top notch performance.

I just loved Last of Us (2013 ). What a great story. What amazing characters. Joel and Ellie and their growing relationship, their bond, with each other - that was great to watch ( and play). This was the heart and soul of what made that game so great. But, as much as it hurts to say, Last of Us Part 2 took a giant DUMP all over that and destroyed all the heart and soul there ever was.I just loved Last of Us (2013 ). What a great story. But, as much as it hurts to say, Last of Us Part 2 took a giant DUMP all over that and destroyed all the heart and soul there ever was. Now don't get me wrong, LOUP2 is still such a beautiful game and has its intense moments, but the story is just horrible and betrays everything about its characters from the previous game. It slaps every fan hard across their face and forces them to play psychotic murderers with split personality issues and also FORCES the player to be confronted with the "woke community". Last of Us Part 2 is a game full of plot holes and a giant amount of flashbacks that rip you out of the game so often, it annoys the teets off a rat. These time jumps just ruin the whole immersion that a player wants to keep in a game. Two, maybe three well-placed ones I might be okay with, but this is just a bad way to tell a story. I was soooo looking forward to this game, but after playing it for a few hours I was regretting it bitterly. And I took my sweet sweet time to with my playthrough ( over 36 hours) because I spent 70 fricking bucks and wanted to squeeze out every cent possible in return. And boy, I can tell you that wasn't easy. You know, There is a farm seen later in the game ( I won't describe more) in which my only thought was "oh God, please let this be finally over". That alone explains what a painful journey this game is. The only good thing to say about it is. that it is truly a beautiful game with lots of areas to scrounge through and awesome detailed regions where you just want to stop and just LOOK around. There are some "levels" in which you can choose to sneak around certain enemies instead of hunting them all down like a serial killer. But then: in other areas you don't have that option. For me the "Game Killer was the way a certain well-known (and loved) main character was "ended". This person DESERVED a better way to go. Also, the missing option to be able to knock someone out - that has to be an effing JOKE. How can you NOT have the choice to knock someone out instead of having to kill them? That is so NOT right. This game has turned its main characters into psychopaths and ignores everything the characters have learned and experienced in their past. It contradicts the true soul of its characters and pees all over the logic of certain choices / decisions they make. And that's why judgement is: they effed it all up! Expand

Open minded review, the graphics and gameplay are amazing, the story however is a huge mess, I avoided spoilers but off marketing could tell Joel dying would be the thing to set the plot in motion, wasn’t mad at that, I loved playing as Ellie, I wanted revenge on Abby but to switch where it did and play so long as Abby was a terrible decision, I gave zero **** about her or her friends, and the Santa Barbara stuff was just pointless, I get what they went for but it was done terribly Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a super good game. While, I think the last section in Santa Barbara doesn't add any emotional weight that Ellie didn't already have from Seattle, there's no denying it, as a whole, tells a, funny enough, more hopeful story by the end. I really wish they had introduced Abby's play through either before she has Ellie at gun point, or at some other time when there was down time for Ellie, because it robbed her of her moment to shine. Abby ends up being a worthy addition to to the roster. I just wished the game hadn't asked me to empathize with, who up to that very moment, was my mortal enemy within seconds of her looking like she was gonna kill me. That being said, this get is being review bombed and it does NOT deserve that. If you have real complaints besides I don't like that they killed Joel, then go ahead, but truthfully, uf you can swallow that mid story pill, Abby ends up growing on you real quick. And Ellie does too Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely amazing gameplay and visuals but I don’t agree with how the characters were treated in this game, so much wasted potential.

Killing Joel had to happen in this game but the way it was done was terrible. A veteran survivor of over 20+ years just causally walking into a trap like that really left a sour taste in my mouth early on.

Also the marketing of this game really led gamers to believe it would be a Joel and Ellie adventure when in the end Joel was only present briefly, I don’t think it’s fair for a company to mid lead people like that. Forcing players to spend a large majority of the game playing as Abby the woman who literally beat and tortured Joel to death was a terrible idea. I spent most of her 7/10 hours of game time just bored and not sympathetic to her in any way, then the fight scene where the game makes you attack Ellie a beloved character who you actually empathise with and beat her to a pulp was a joke.

Finally the ending of the game was so anti climatic. I was so excited to play out Ellie and Abbys last fight and finally get revenge on Joels killer then she just lets her go. After Ellie has killed maybe 100+ people to get to this woman it just makes absolutely no sense for her to forgive her at the end. I will do a new game+ at some point but I absolutely will be skipping all of the Abby sections on my next play through, It could have been an actual masterpiece but Naughty Dog really dropped the ball on this game.

Expand

For me it’s just another reason why game journalists opinions mean nothing. To actually suggest to me that this game is way better than Horizon Zero Dawn is an absolute joke gimme a break. Anyways tlou2 i really really wanted to love you. I tried very hard but there are quite a few issues I had with you. First and foremost the story, the characters in the tlou were very well written and and very easy to form an emotional attachment to, part 2 however the characters we forgettable. The writing felt lazy and forced at times and the pacing was way off. As far as gameplay goes I was disappointed as well. I expected an upgrade from tlou but very little changes here. Would like to have seen more new enemies instead of just variants of the old ones. It felt like every battle plays out the exact same and yeah the jump button what a joke lol. The inclusion of dogs to sniff you out would of been great if not for the absolute brain dead AI and also again easily manipulated and abused here. You can run up grab someone and silent kill them and a guy won’t see you if he’s staring at you as long as you are far enough away. Play on higher difficulties to mitigate this a bit. Now does that mean this game does nothing right? Nope....the graphics are some of the best on the ps4 and this game is visually stunning. Also the audio work is fantastic and voice acting as well. There are moments in this game that do get you scared or nervous and or on the edge of your seat. For me though these moments are too few and by the end I felt like I was forcing myself to finish this game to wrap up the story I didn’t like. Overall though the game is not a zero and it’s not a 10 it lands somewhere in the middle hence why I gave it a 5 could be argued for a 4 for some or even as high as a 6 maybe 7 and I’d listen to those arguments but don’t try and tell me this is the best game of this generation or the worst either. Like I said earlier about horizon zero dawn...don’t even try to tell me this game is close to the Witcher 3 game journos. Expand

TLOU 1 was a stunning game with some of the best storytelling, gameplay, and graphics I have ever seen. It sparked the discussion around whether video games are art. In almost all fields, TLOU 1 was revolutionary.
However, TLOU 2 failed miserably at living up to its 7 YEAR DEVELOPMENT CYCLE and TLOU 1.
Story: Characters die and are replaced with unlikeable ones that you can't

Graphics: This games one saving grace is its graphics, they are magnificent.

Having to play as the character responsible and trying to make her story sympathetic just wasn't going to work. Maybe if the original Last of US didn't exist and we just got Joel's story in flashbacks it could have worked. We were already connected to those characters and thought we were continuing their story. There was no justification they could give me that would allow me to like this other character after she did what she did. Everything about the game is top notch...and you do play as Ellie and exact some revenge which I enjoyed. But the other half brings it way down... Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
