I loved the first game and I’m glad I played this one but this was a major let down. Naughty Dog has been my favourite studio for some time but this was a real black spot for them. Overall this game had a lot of promise but hasn’t lived up to the hype. Expand

I give it a 5 for the graphic section, its soundtrack and its gameplay and new built-in mechanics, it is not a bad game but its history leaves something to be desired as perhaps the crude death of Joel totally unnecessary and the stupid revenge of Ellie that does not He met and we wasted hours of play to end up leaving Abby alive and running away in her boat, on top so that Ellie loses her 2 fingers and her courtship with Dina. #GoogleTraslate Expand

    (Sorry for any spelling errors or confusion, im from Denmark)
    I have played through the whole game

    Abby tortured and executed joel for pleasure, and never felt sorry. How can you side with a character like that?

    How to fix it:

    Let joel be a bigger part of the start of the game.

    Let joel be held at gun point in to the room.

    Dont torture joel, just shot him in the leg and let him have a final word to elle, before he get shot in the head.

    In abbys story find a way to make abby show she have
    sympathy for elle some how (Elle did kill all her friends, so i dont know how)

    Elles last flashback when trying to kill Abby :
    Elle: "If you ever got killed i will still go on a killing spree, to kill the people responsible"
    Joel: "I dont want you to do that, i dont deserve that, after how i lied to you and killed the fireflies" or something like that.

    Gameplay 7/10
    Graphics 10/10
    Story 7/10

Expand

    Watched streams on twitch, no emotional attachment to any new characters at all, the characters are boring and forced. Why would the player control a boring character half of the game and the plot doesn’t make any sense.

    Will buy 2nd hand game disc for this when everyone turn in at game stores and kill Abby to ease my mind when I control her.

    The story is just bad. I don't give 2 balls about Lev or Lara or whatever her name is. I didn't hate playing as Abby as much as I thought I would, but she was still **** boring compared to bae Ellie. In the end, after like 20 hours, we don't even get to murk Abby, we let her go. RIDICULOUS.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I tried really hard to like this game, from the combat, the gameplay mechanics, even to the plot. However I found myself disliking the game, the more I played of it, from the death of Joel, to having to play as his killer and forced to sympathize with her character through some of her missions, and the ending of Ellie not even being able to commit to how far you have to take her character. It’s not good, the first few hours before Joel does, that was good, that felt like maybe Joel and Ellie would find a way to resolve their conflict. I get that what was done in the first games ending, had to have some resolution of its own, but doing it this way was not the way to go for me.
    I honestly feel like, this game lost its sense of joy in its dark world. I loved playing as Joel and Ellie in the first game, even how the characters developed. With the sequel, I just can’t get with the narrative and the ending just feels like a slap in the face to the whole adventure. Gameplay wise, I think mechanics could have been upgraded from what was done before, yet I feel like a lot of politics and hypocrisy are also to blame for what became of this game. So many people in industry want to praise this game instead of look at its flaws, and this game has some flaws in both narrative and gameplay. Graphics and animation are great, but they do not save a game if the story isn’t great with it. The character of Abbey that you play as, I hated having to play with her, it wasn’t even just her torturing Joel, it was her character as a whole. I’ll be honest, when this games trailers originally introduced back in 2016, I thought she was Ellie’s mother and that they would explain don what happened to her and how Ellie became immune to begin with. I played Left Behind, I know the story, but that would have been a great way to go and having Ellie and Joel go on an adventure that meshed the two storylines together where they meet in different time periods. The whole cult idea could still be utilized, but I think the game shouldn’t forget about its zombie roots either. I’m sad to see a promising series go this route, and really hope that if something like this is attempted again, that the characters you play as well as the story, aren’t so misguided and without life.

Obviously it looks and sounds amazing and the acting is second to none. While the game play isn't fantastic I think it serves it's purpose just fine. Hell, there are even some elements of the story I liked but man, for the most part the story is a complete mess. This game introduced a ton of new characters, only 2 or 3 of them get any development or significant screen time and I'm expected to feel bad for killing them on more than a basic human empathy level. I think the biggest problem this game has is it's structure. There are scenes where I thought they were only there cause they didn't know where else to put them. If the game started with the three flashback scenes of Joel and Ellie and also Built up Abby in that time before she kills Joel the story would already be five times better than it already is. This game needed a better writer to fully take advantage of the themes that had been chosen. Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To be clear for an overall experience I don't think this game is the worst of the worst, I think its an OK game. Without including the drama around the game, the thing that turned me off was the story, and no I don't just mean a specific event that happens 2 hours into the game. The story as a whole for me was just not nearly as good as its predecessor The Last Of Us. For starters, the game felt forced. What I mean by this is it did not have an organic feeling that any good story would have. In many instances it felt as if things happened because they needed to happen rather than naturally occuring and this is where The Last Of Us and The Last Of Us Two really differentiate themselves. The controversial scene around the 2 hour mark did feel as if it was one of the many instances of the game needing a certain trigger to start. The event was in no way shape or form clever and unique which really did spoil the moment all together. I would even argue it was out of character and did not bring justice to a certain character in The Last Of Us. Another instance of an out of place event would be at the end of the game. The ending truly left me puzzled as to what it wanted to accomplish. You look at games like the God Of War trilogy which bases its entire story around revenge and is loved by many fans.
    Why did The Last Of Us Two fail? It's because it is not true to its main capturing theme of revenge. Ellie goes through the entire story wanting to avenge a certain character just to not get her revenge at the very end. This left me baffled especially since the writers did such a poor job on winning my sympathy over the person who killed a certain character. People were left unsatisfied with this ending because nobody cared for the murderer. This underwhelming and unsatisfying story left many unhappy because many love The Last Of Us for its story. That's usually what I value the most when buying single-player games, especially ones made by naughty dog. We were all expecting an engaging story filled with character development and mixed emotions on other characters. All we got was a black and white narrative that failed at changing our views on who was good and who was bad. On the contrary, The Last of Us Two did have stellar graphics which I can proudly say they’re some of the best graphics I have ever seen. The environment you play in is so diverse and beautiful I found myself occasionally just stopping and gazing off to the background. The gameplay was much smoother and more polished than its predecessor The Last Of Us Two. With regards to the gameplay aspect, I did enjoy every moment of combat that this game had to offer and enjoyed exploring the The Last Of Us Two environment. It may seem as my review is one-sided, but I just had a lot to say about the story. Other than that I can confidently say The Last Of Us Two did have beautiful graphics and immersive gameplay that people will enjoy.

That said, this sequel gets easier to play once you accept that unlike the first game this story is not about Joel and Ellie, but rather about how violence and revenge affects the people living in this post-apocalyptic world. I loved the difficulty. I played on survivor and it is challenging but rewarding. survivor difficulty is in my opinion the best way to play the game. I also loved the gameplay (fights are long, brutal, and satisfying), the sound, the soundtrack (especially the new use of synths during the fight scenarios), and the graphics. However, at the end of the day this game is story focused. For me, the story feels wrong and I wasn't sure how to feel about it until I finished the game. I respect Naughty Dog for what they tried to achieve and even though you feel some of the moments in the end I don't think they were able to do the same with the main characters. There are still some beautiful story moments involving Ellie and Joel reminiscent of the first game but the bad storytelling stuff is just extremely hard to ignore. I am sad to say this but I did not like this game, from a technical point of view the game is very good, the tech/art team did a great job and the accessibility options they included should set a precedent for upcoming titles. The gameplay is good, similar to TLOU1, however, I found the plot, the message, and the character development cheap and tiring.

This game feels awkward and at times even boring, maybe due to poorly developed characters combined with a linear story and repetitive combat scenarios, at least for a 20+ hours journey. Many of the characters dialogues felt disconnected from the multiple shocking events that were presented to the player. In my personal experience, the game tried to push some feelings so hard that they ultimately lost me. In the end, instead of being immersed in the universe, I was more like, oh look here the writers are using these tricks to make me empathize with this one character as opposed to this character who is doing this other thing…there is a lot of plot armor and is hard to ignore. Moreover, there is a new character who basically has a very similar arc than TLOU1, which is ok but this is done in a pushy, rushed way and at least for me it did not work. It is interesting how I went from caring about the people in this universe to being completely disconnected, and now I just don’t care what will happen to them. I think if this were a TV series, that you can leave it on the background while doing some other activity is ok, but as a game that requires almost all of your attention its a waste of time. Maybe the writers were trying to do some kind of ‘social experiment’ because It is hard to believe that no-one pointed out the flaws during the production stages. However, I do not know if having such a polarized reception and making a game to shock and promote hate is something to be proud of.

    I loved the story of TLOU1 because I found it fresh compared to other post-apocalyptic worlds (e.g., the walking dead). I think for someone that doesn’t care too much about story and consistency this is just a cliche plot, the gameplay is fine. If TLOU1 has a special place in your heart, I would recommend to not buy this game without reading more about it, because the advertisement is kind of misleading and you can find yourself wasting your free time on an unpleasant experience. I think the best aspect of this game has been its progression from a tragedy to a comedy, the fact that many people overcome this kind of disbelief together and ended up laughing about it and letting it go, better titles will come. In my opinion, this game is to be bought on sale price and a reminder that sometimes preordering may not be the smartest decision.

Gameplay wise there not a lot to complain about but the horseback riding can be glitchy when going in between objects. And the switching menu can feel very slow when going from gun to heath pack or other objects. Now the biggest problem of the game the story. I'm ok with Joel getting killed off but I don't like the way the did it, and it don't really feel like it need to happen. And now Abby, I don't like or want to play this character. When you play as Abby you kill Joel, Jesse, and almost kill Tommy, Ellie, and Dina. The attempt to humanize Abby fall flat on me I don't care about her. But I did like Yara and Lev. In all honesty if you leave Abby in the game still as the main villain but take out all her playable story and you still can find out why she killed Joel/ maybe change the way she killed him. And put all the time they put on Abby toward Ellie and Dina relationship and their journey to Seattle, and maybe you can also try to put Yara and Lev stroy in there as well. It would have been a better story in my opinion. I also have a problem with how Abby find Ellie in her hide out. I don't think Ellie dumb enough to write where she is hiding out on a map. The ending had me disappointed to say the least. I loved the original last of us but hated the ending. I guess I can say I like this ending more but it's still bad, she lost Dina but I don't care to much about their relationship because they didn't really build it up. It's like you really didn't lose anything other than Joel at the end and what happened to Tommy did he go after Abby again or stay home. The game isn't as bad as people are say but it's no where as good as critics are saying. It's a shame this could have been a amazing story/game but they just didn't make the game that they should have. Expand

    At first I purchase this game in advance, but after I watch somebody play the first hour of this game, I immediately ask for a full refund. Then I watch the whole gameplay in some players' live streams. Actually, the whole story isn't too bad but the story telling really sucks while Ellie acts like an idiot and Abby acts like a real person. And many characters' death is so cheap such as Joel and Jessie who died casually. About the narrative structure, I think if you put Abby's memories and story before the story of Ellie without telling players that Abby's revenge target is Joel, it will be much better. Anyway, as a player who had played tlou, I don't think tlou2 is an acceptable sequel while it has no respect for tlou and fans who waited 7 years to play this.

    This game does not deserve tens, nines or zero-ones. The great idea (in theory) is destroyed by absolute mediocre screenplay with boring characters conversations and their illogical actions.
    You can talk and argue about the ending of the first part for hours, it’s so powerful and contradictory. The second game will be forgotten in a few months. Pathetic.

    BUT:
    Story: Absolutely disapointing and partially torturing! From the moment I was forced to play Abby I started hating the game. Little did i know that ~ 50% of the game would be like this. And when i had to fight Ellie i died on the inside.

    I think it would have been much more comprehensible, if the entire Abby game-play would have been moved to the beginning of the game.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, the negative reviews of this game I just don’t get. Sure, fans are entitled to their own opinion(s) and I respect that but with that being said so am I.

    This is an absolutely amazing game from start to finish probably top 5 ever made an absolute masterpiece for sure, hands down!!!. I found myself, after putting the controller down for a bit asking myself, is this a game, feels like I am in a Hollywood blockbuster just as I did with the first game. Sure I do agree with some of the fan’s take on insertion and the vagueness of the story without adding to overall character development however that’s not what the mission of this game was. I believe ND wanted to convey a blanket story of the overall visceral nature of revenge. Quite honestly when I heard some of the reviews that stated that the violence in this game was “traumatizing” or how some stated things such as “why am I playing this game” or “it made me feel so bad for humanity” I thought to myself “wow, what kind of things did ND put into this game” to make people say such things, then I played it. There was nothing in this game that made me feel no more apathetic or uninvested than watching an episode of the walking dead. If anything it could have used more brutality given what happens to the two main protagonists (there is a third one) however I believe ND let up on it a bit to make you feel more in tune with the struggles of its main characters decisions throughout the whole of the game.

    Once I reached the halfway point of this game ND was playing with my emotions hardcore! I went from wanting nothing more than for Ellie to bring nothing short of the worst sort of reckoning upon a group of people to sympathizing with the main “antagonist” and then eventually my emotions culminating with being torn on who I wanted to see succeed. That my friends is great story telling and writing for that matter. One thing I will say though is shame on ND for toying with us in the trailers and commercial spots. I wanted so much for that to be this mind blowing twist of events when you get to the point in the game when a hand covers up your mouth (moment from the trailer) and in fact it’s Jesse and not Joel like the trailer showed but who are we kidding, Movies do this all of the time...lol!

    After all that being said if there was Oscar’s for games, this one took every award home. Definitley GOTY!!!! Bravo NG! Please just don’t let it be this long of a wait for the third installment!

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The ending is just sad and unsatisfying. Ellie loses so much and doesn't even get what she did everything for. She lost Joel,Jesse,Dina,Tommy hates her for not going after Abby and she lost the ability to play guitar,which reminded her of Joel. What happens to Abby? She gets her revenge at the cost of her friends. If she was shown to also reflect on how it wasn't worth it I wouldn't want her dead and would be at peace with the ending. Another problem with the game are definetly the order of the flashbacks. If the game was in chronological order it would have been so much better. Joel's death would have had more impact as we get to play through all the flashbacks instead of it just being for shock value. The most enjoyable parts of this game were the flashbacks that remind you of the first game. I don't know what happend to this game and why it turned out like this when their previous games were so good. The graphics on the other hand look fabulous and the atmosphere is very cool, although compared to the PS3 The last of us not that impressive cause Naughty Dog's games look good in general. As a standalone game this is a 7, as the sequel to a game I loved so much its a 5 at most as it disrespects Joel in the worst way possible,characters behave strange and the writing is just.... wack. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Vamos gente, qué acaso no prestaron atención a nada?

    The dodge button finally allows you to do more than just throw bricks and snap necks from behind, and the plethora of difficulty options allow you to tweak the game and turn into Resident Evil, Uncharted and everything in between. The attention to detail in this game is staggering, the gore physics is impeccable , powerful and detailed. Even if you don't like the classic stealth survival from the first game, you can change that, and have a different experience. There are still walking sim segments and you can't skip those but ehi there's an hit button so if you just want to speed things up you can.

    On the flipside, the story is terrible - I'm sorry, it just is - and nothing is gonna change that.
    As a movie or a TV show, this wouldn't have a chance.
    The first half lacks the push the first game had, plot armor saves a character multiple times with the sole purpose of pushing forward a stupid plan, and the second forces you into 2 long side quests while relegating the main theme of the game to the side, all to justify the existence of these new characters. I get it, different sides have different goals, but I don't care about these people. I can't. And these quests drag on for so long.

    If you're a die hard The Last Of Us fan for the story, this game MIGHT be rude awakening. I say might because there's a chance you will appreciate the symbolism behind this narrative. I didn't.
    If gameplay is all you want, this is better than the first one.

    They killed Joel, okey, it must be something great, cause they killed main character, beloved character. Why did they kill him? Because he killed doctor who could save world, but he wanted killed Elly... and if we remember end of the 1 part, she didn’t ask her about saving the world, ok she was little girl, Joel big man and did this for her.
    Okey...
    Ebby. I didn’t sympathized with her, she is ugly, she could not choose between love and war. What was her motivation to kill tommy, Joel( Joel ,ok, he killed her father, but her father without sin.) Tommy killed her boyfriend? They weren’t in relationships, so... Why did she attach to scars? She murdered them. They saved her life, hmm... I hate this character, because she killed Joel, fu.. Joel.

    Elly. She was little girl, she stayed little girl. She killed all guys who was involved in the murder, expect Ebby, because she forgave her. Hmm. Why didn’t she forgive them all? I expected a larger, gubinny plot, thoughtful characters, plot twists, and, ****, ending.

Not even looking about, looking for notes and clues and cards like I do with Ellie in her play through. I just don’t think Abbys story is good. You built up a character development in the Last of us 1 to have it shattered in Last Of Us 2, then make us play a character that we don’t want to be (maybe some people do). I get Mr Miller has to die, it’s good for the story, but the way he went out is just ridiculous. The Last Of Us 1 was profound and groundbreaking. GAMEPLAY - TLOU2's gameplay is AMAZING, In every encounter with the Scars, Wolves, or Infected your choices truly matter as your resources are very minimal encouraging players to really play smart. Players who explore are rewarded greatly with pieces of story, or items that come in handy. GRAPHICS - The graphics in this game are probably the best the PlayStation has to offer in terms of realism. STORY - In this game we follow the journey of two different protagonists Abby and Ellie both in their own path of revenge. In the first hour or so of the game we watch as Abby brutally tortures and kills Joel as Ellie watches, and the story seems to have established Abby as the antagonist. The game constantly has you play as Abby in hopes of you sympathizing for her by seeing her side of the story but ultimately fails. The game's final mission has you hunting Abby after receiving a lead that she may be in Santa Barbara, but before she leaves she is given an ultimatum to move on and live with her new life or to dwell in the past, and ends with Ellie's own self-destruction, gaining nothing and losing everything she ever had. OVERALL- This game was heartbreaking to play not because it was bad but because of amazing it could've been and how it played out. And when I finally reached the ending of the game it didn't feel deserved, it didn't feel right. This is my first time writing a review on a game, thank you to anyone who read it! Expand

    What really ruins this game, is the story. Never I felt so disconnected from the characters. I played the first last of us recently and I learned to love these characters and their interactions but this game ruins all that. Everything the old characters do seems out of character and unjustifiable, it ruined the whole immersion for me. I can't relate to the new characters at all, their reasons seem so unjustifiable and out of place. It's everything so unappealing that I found myself skipping areas and forcing myself through the game just to get to the ending.
    The ending could be worse but could be a lot better as well - just takes the meaning of the whole character development until that point.
    The main characters very badly written - Ellie is a shadow of what it used to be and Abby couldn't be more unappealing and predictable.
    The whole writing of this game is bad, there's a lot of scenes for shock value, plot armour, pacing issues and most of the story is flashbacks inside flashbacks inside flashbacks.
    The most enjoyable story moments for me was the interactions of young Ellie and Joel, which was made the first game great...
    I think the game could be a lot better if the line of the event were laid out differently - this would allow for more connection with the characters and now what drives them.
    I will not play this game again and I wish I never played it in the first place, I fell like this entry takes a bit of quality to the franchise.

With a morally bankrupt story of endless torturous scenes and uninteresting characters that simply go against logic in a basic revenge plot that cycles in-of itself with no real satisfying outcome.

    One of the best looking games to come out of this generation, the art and design team prove again that they can push the technology to its limit to show something that is graphically and technologically impressive. The world that is made within the series is one of the best examples of a post-apocalyptic world we have.

    The game-play is a decade old rendition of the first games, with no new innovations to push the medium. Which feels like it’s made up of entirely of different rooms of repeating stealth or combat scenarios, while the very few environmental “puzzles” simply require you to move a dumpster or climb through a window.

    In a conclusion; I myself, would have rather continued to believe that the story had ended at the final events of the previous game, than have gone through the devastating, un-enjoyable events of the sequel that added almost nothing of substance to the plot.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm sorry, ND, but I simply cannot care about all the individuals you showed me throughout the game, I can't even do that in real life to be honest. Ellie and Joel grew on me after spending a whole game seeing them face hardships and build their relationship. But in the sequel, you expected me to understand a new character whose only redeeming quality is the death of her father. Nothing else. Because Abby as a character is not worth of anyone's care. She didn't do anything remotely empathetic to earn my respect: she **** her friend's boyfriend, she never showed regret after killing Joel in that grotesque way even when he saved her or while hearing the cries of Ellie, she enjoyed torturing a pregnant woman, you made me play as her and fight against an actual beloved character and so on.
    But hey, you thought that after showing me that people seem to like her in her own stupid faction, will I also like her? That's not how things work and you should know better.

    And the rest is not much better, at many times I felt like I was watching an episode of a bad TV show. Did you this time take inspiration from a cliche Netflix show by any chance instead of a book?

    And I haven't mentioned anything about the barely improved mechanics and disappointing AI. The 5 mark goes for those in charge of directing the scenes, the art and the 3D models because they did an incredible job, anything else is subpar and it doesn't matter if the game cost 1 or 200 million, a bad game is still a bad game.

    Le pongo un cinco porque el juego ha conseguido, como el primero, que me vicie de forma insana a un juego. Es bastante adicitivo pese a que su historia es una puta mierda, el guardado manual no sirve para nada, los NPC son casi todos un estorbo y poner cajones vacios rodeado de cajones que no se pueden abrir .

    Pros:
    - very impressive visuals;
    - awesome character animation and performances;
    - satisfying mele combat and stealth;
    - sound design and music;
    - range of accessibility options;

    Cons:
    - the levels feel too big and way too empty, and the exploration feels more like filler and padding to stretch the time than an integral part of the gameplay loop;
    - gunplay and the main gameplay loop, in general, feel dated, not adding much to what we've seen in the first game, and making the later part of the game incredibly drawn out due to the repetitiveness;
    - character models are questionable at times, from the strange proportion of the bodies to some supporting characters looking way too similar;
    - continuation of the previous point - besides looking similar, the new characters are also very 2-dimensional to the point where you don't remember their names after dispatching of them (and the games just ignores them all after their death);
    - MISREPRESENTATION of lgbtq and exploitation tired lgbtq tropes and stereotypes for cheap drama and shock value (i.e. the bisexual character is indecisive between the male and the female love interest; the trans character is all about suffering for being trans)
    - and, finally, the story. shallow, banal revenge plot told in a convoluted mish-mash of flashbacks and flashbacks inside flashbacks, constantly undermining its own message with the gameplay as well as ridiculous amount of offhanded violence with no real gravitas. pre-existing characterizations are changed to serve the new direction, previous events are retconned, all subtlety forgotten.

    all in all, considering the amount of work from simple employees who, no doubt, tried to polish every aspect they could, and the stunning result of their work, i don't think it's fair to go with emotions and give it a 0, but i also don't think the story-driven games with terrible writing and so poorly thought through relationships between the plot and the gameplay deserves anything more than 5.

The game is not a 3 because some elements are good such as the graphics and bits and pieces of the story. The gameplay while fun at first got old after about 10 hours. There are a lot of enemies in this game and miles of paths which at some point I just turned the difficulty down all the way to plow through the game and it still took way too long to finish. The game's graphics and mechanics are amazing, I haven't encountered many bugs or other things that bother me during the game. Instead, the story of the game is very, very nasty, you are made to play with the enemy just to take more time to make the game last longer. The ending is a very ugly one without logic and that does not ignite any feelings and makes you wonder "what the hell is this".

    64% or 6.4/10

    Note, I played the entire game. I played it because I am a fan of Naughty Dog, the series and to formulate my own opinion on the game without the influence of other people’s comments on the game. During my gameplay I did not seek any plot information. However, I did know Joel died in the game, and Abby beats up Ellie at some point due to spoilers.

    Gameplay:
    The game brings everything back from the first game and fine tunes it to be better. Scavenging and limited resources fits this game’s genre perfectly. Make every resource count. Combat with both humans and infected has to be strategized, specially if you play on moderate or above as you can’t run and gun your way through with limited resources. To me this is perfect. The few complaints about gameplay come in the weapon/resource swapping. A selection wheel would fit this game much better. For example, if you want to select a molotov and then get back to your second hand gun, you have to to press down on the d pad twice, throw molotov then press right on the d pad twice again, which feels clunky to do.

    Graphics and sound:
    This is masterpiece in terms of technical achievement. You have to see it in person as streamed video takes away from the quality. This game kept making my jaw dropped every time a new location was shown. Its insane a console can handle those kinds of visuals. Sound is on par with the visuals as expected. Check out digital foundry for an in depth review of the technical aspect.

    Story:
    The story really comes down to each person if they like it or not. I personally did not like some of the major events in the game. However the story does have some shinning moments that I enjoyed. The first major event is Joel’s death. Personally, I did not want him be killed off in the game. They way he is killed is terrible to say the least. His death does however fuel the anger of the player and you get in that mentality of revenge right away. I consider this event as moderately negative in my score. The second major events are killing off Joel’s killer accomplices. This was quite satisfying in terms of the overall story, avenging Joel. 4 are killed by Ellie, and 1 by Tommi. 2 of them maybe could’ve been spared (Mel and Owen) as they showed remorse or more redeeming qualities than Abby. This part of the story is highly positive in my score. The next major event is Abby coming back for Ellie and Tommi. This is a high tension part of the game. Unfortunately it pivots to show us Abby’s story for about 10 hours. This is a terrible move in terms of the story, completely lost interest in the story at this point as I was not interested or having fun playing as Abby. Abby gets as much screen time / gameplay as Ellie. I followed the story for the sake of understanding the plot and never in the 10 hours playing as Abby did I sympathize with her. In fact I attached more to 2 side characters in Abby’s arc, Lev and Yara. As I said, this is really going to depend on person to person, and I personally did not like or cared much about the story of Abby. The only redeeming quality that ever comes up for Abby is she saving Lev and Yara. Other than that Abby is not a good person but she isn’t evil either as a normal antagonist. She loses her father, killed by Joel, but the father was never explored/developed as a character so its pretty hard to care about him and Abby. I’d rate Abby’s arc as moderately negative. I didn’t see the point. The only decent part is saving the kids Lev and Yara. The rest of her arc is forgettable. Lastly, the end. We get back to the part where Abby finds Ellie, after 10 hours of playing as Abby, at this point I just wanted to wrap things up as the story had already dragged too much. They fight and Abby let’s Ellie live. Months later Ellie goes after Abby again only to let her go at the final fight. The ending is bad, mainly because Abby is not a redeemable person, there is nothing about Abby that makes her a character worth of redemption. The ending could’ve been easily saved by allowing the player to make the final choice, kill Abby or let her go.

    Plot holes:
    Joel and Tommi’s naive dumbed down personalities. This is so unfitting for these characters after the first game. They walk into the wolf’s den to be killed.
    Abby killing Joel after he saves her. Although Joel saves Abby, she never shows doubt or remorse.
    Ellie not shooting as soon as she opens the door. She had a clear a clear shot at Abby.
    Abby’s clan sparing Ellie and Tommi. This would never happen in the real world when 5 other people are there and know if they live they might come after them.
    Ellie and Jessie walking straight into the fight with Abby.

There are great moments and sequences here and there, but that's just not enough for a game in which the story is the main draw. Dialogue often feels unnatural and characters seem to make decisions for the benefit of the plot and not what makes sense for the characters themselves, rare problems in the previous game. The game frequently attempts to make the player feel guilty for actions they are forced by the game to perform, which can be done well, but it often comes off as too obvious and manipulative which causes the player to feel frustrated and disengaged instead of emotional. There is some fun to be had and a few of the characters are genuinely interesting, but overall, the incredible efforts put into this game on a technical level feel largely wasted. Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If this game were a stand alone with new characters never seen before it could maybe be a 7 or 8, but as a sequel to such a great game using well established and loved characters which it treats so poorly, I feel it deserves a 4 or 5.

    The graphics are exceptional and the world is fun to explore; the environment puzzles feel like they've taken a step up from the last game with the addition of jumping/ropes. The gameplay and atmosphere is good enough to keep me entertained even if it isn't revolutionary and hasn't changed much since the last game.

    However, this is a story based game and with all the relationship drama (two love triangles?) inserted throughout I felt like I was playing a soap-opera. The entirety of Abby's section, especially the Yara and Lev on the island parts, felt like gameplay filler that really added nothing to the story.

    The adverts and trailers were specifically altered to make people believe Joel was in the game for longer than he was which is a cheap trick on the fans. With Joel gone so early on, the thing which made the first game so great (Joel and Ellie's relationship) is wiped away and replaced with brand new characters that try to fill that gap he left in the game. No matter how well performed, they are never going to fill that vacuum.

    The kicker for me is how the game tries so hard to make us empathise with Abby yet shows her as a bloodthirsty killer who is happy to murder a pregnant woman. Joel and Tommy go out of their way to save her multiple times in the beginning yet there's no nuance to how she behaves during the death scene or even afterwards when they are back in Washington. She doesn't take time to evaluate that Joel, who she thought was evil, risked his own life to selflessly save hers even though she was a stranger. She goes straight from accepting his help multiple times to happily torturing him, and we're supposed to like her enough to play as her for half the game. My heart sank when I first picked up pills as Abby and realised I was going to play as her for a long time.

    I feel bad giving such a low score because i loved the first game but as far as i'm concerned this game is 100% NOT canon.

    Also, there's no Factions MP which was a surprisingly fun addition in the first instalment.

    I hated this game, but I'm going to give naughty dog the benefit of the doubt and assume that is exactly what they wanted. Well, they were successful. The story of the last of us 2 is uncomfortable, violent and tragic. It follows Ellie as she descends down a path of vengeance, and the player is there for every bloody moment of it.

    My problems with the game begin with the moral line that is painted in the first game, where killing is necessary to survive in a post apocalyptic world. The first game created the definition of the moral grey area that comes with survival, but the last of us 2 not only crosses this line, it leaps over it and does a little dance to taunt you. The game is simply tragic, and not in an Othello kind of way. Rather the game feels like it is playing with the emotions of its fans with no payoff. The only purpose in Ellie's story I could draw by the time the credits rolled was a theme that has been told over and over again in many other forms of media, and honestly the theme had no place in the follow-up to a game about hope.

    Playing the last of us 2 has ruined the last of us 1 for me. The original game used the main antagonists of itself as a metaphor for its story. The firefly's shared the motto "When you are lost in the darkness, look for the light". In the last of us 1, Ellie was the light. The last of us 2 takes this beautiful theme and burns it in front of you, forcing you take it all in as everything you loved about the first game is stripped away. As a stand alone story, the last of us 2 is beautifully written and a feat of story telling, but as a sequel to one of the last generations most beloved games this is unnecessarily cruel.

    The gameplay of the Last of us 2 is an improvement over the original. It is still just as fun and intense, with a few small additions to the gameplay that add variety, such as new guns and toys for the player to craft and utilise in creative ways. There is not too much to say about the gameplay component other than if you enjoyed the last of us 1 purely for the gameplay, then you will me more than satisfied here.

    Despite the story, the atmosphere, sound and level design of this game provide for some of the most beautiful scenarios I have seen on in generation of consoles. Just like how the first game felt like you were playing on a next generation console early, this experience is no different.

    I can praise the last of us 2 on its gameplay and atmosphere all day, which if I didn't mention, it nailed, but I played this game for its story. The first game left me feeling empty, as I wanted to continue following Joel and Ellie's story and felt empty without them. This game did the same, but instead of wanting the game to continue I was left wishing it never happened. I wish that the continuation of Joel and Ellie's story was left up to my own imagination, as was originally intended. At the end of the day, I I would encourage you to play the game and form your own opinion, however be warned that the bigger the fan you are, then the bigger the letdown this will be.

I have waited 7 years to know how this amazing story would develop... first of all, Ellie never even got the chance to truly apolagize Joel, keeping in mind that the only thing he did has SAVE HER, over and over again. Then the game goes to a path where one of the most beloved characters dies in such a miresable way. I was so shock that I didn't even know if i would like to continue playing. Joel deserved vengeance. The only goal Ellie had on tis game was to kill all of the people that had helped to murder Joel in such a brutal way, and she didn't even had the guts to do that. And by the ending of the story, Joel is dead, Tommy almost died, Ellie lost her family and two fingers for NOTHING. All these years waiting, and this is what we get? I'm devastated.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What happened? Let me start by saying that by no means is this a 0/10 game. The gameplay, voice acting, atmosphere/world, sound, soundtrack and graphics are fantastic. It’s what holds this game somewhat up. The real problem with this game is the story. TLOU 1 had an amazing story. It is what ND is known for. But this game falls flat. It’s like they forgot what they had created from the first one. I get what they were trying to do. In a world like this no one is truly good nor evil, many of the people we see from our side of the story as the bad guys are the same as us, humans who have done terrible things to survive. They’re “bad” people but technically so is Joel. They just executed it SO bad. The problem is not that they killed Joel, but the way they did it. 2 hours into the game and they kill a beloved main character to a person that we have no idea who is. Then they try to redeem it by showing Abby’s backstory in what feels like 10 minutes and then expects us to feel
    for her. Also Ellie has killed maybe 100s of bad guys, but those who killed Joel are the ones she feel bad about killing? Joel has been through so much **** and didn’t trust anybody, but trusted Abby enough to walk into a house full of her group and then using his real name, even though he KNOWS a lot of people hate him for what he did to the Fireflies? I really do see what ND were trying to do, but they did it in a horrible way.. And it hurts even more knowing you have waited 5 years for this sequel.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 1. Graphics and combat/controls are actually really good. Same with acting; these departments shine when compared with... the rest. 2. Story is actually terrible and the characters make choices that they would not make. These new devs clearly don’t care about the old protagonists and just wanted to do their own thing. 3. Killing off Joel and then making the player play a character they hate for 10 hours is just about the worst development choice I can think of. AND making you attack the protagonist with a character everyone hates! What?!

    4. The “revenge is bad” trope doesn’t work at all because the people who do get revenge get off scot-free while Ellie (who does not get revenge) loses her fingers, girlfriend (?) and kid. 5. I’m fine with the sjw stuff in most games, but it is VERY clear that the new devs shoehorned in as many minorities they could. This becomes apparent when you find out who worked on this game and not the first. The main problem with this it is an easy cop-out for people complaining about legitimate reasons. Already you see articles popping up about “review bombing” from the “evil gamers”. No, the story is **** and the devs are hiding behind a wall of identity politics.

    6. Compared with the first, (no exaggeration) this is the worst fall in storytelling I have ever seen. Even the Star Wars sequels weren’t this bad. 7. Perhaps the seediest thing I have seen the Naughty Dog do is OBVIOUSLY pay/give benefits to “professional reviewers.” There is no way in hell that this many reviewers gave 10/10s when the fanbase hates the game this much. I have lost a ton of respect for both Naughty Dog and these game journalists. Conclusion: 5/10. Pros: Graphics are great! Acting is great! Gameplay is the same as the first!

    Killing Joel in a disingenuous way
    Playing as Abby Terrible ending
    Pointless minority pandering

    Overall, probably the most disappointing game I have ever played. I am truly let down, especially with all the resources Naughty Dog had. 7 years and a killer first game. DO NOT PLAY, I DO NOT CONSIDER THIS CANON. TLOU ENDS AT THE END OF THE FIRST

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 não é um jogo pra quem quer heroísmo, certo ou errado... Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Everyone is upset about Joel, but the real tragedy here is what they've done to their female characters, and that The Last of Us 2, is decidedly unfeminist.

    Before I continue, I'd like to note that I've never left a review for a game, and never used Metacritic - but this game offended me so much, that I decided to make an account and add my voice to the conversation.

    As a female gamer, it always excited me to see great and well written female characters. Of-course I always appreciate fantastic male characters and really loved Joel and Ellie in the 1st game. Ellie was such a realistic and engaging female character because she was so smart, funny, resourceful, and while she had her struggles, she always tried to be a good person. In the sequel, all of that is gone. She is mean, depressive, monotone and selfish. I understand the developers, wanted her to be “dark” and “ a strong women” but all they’ve done is suck the life out of an amazing character. Why is it, that to be “a strong women”, it means to cave people's skulls in? What about other strong traits besides just physical strength like kindness, leadership, forgiveness, intelligence? Ellie is a bad person, constantly putting her pregnant girlfriends/friend's life at risk for her own selfish causes - it’s very unfortunate to see. It’s really unfortunate to see “strong women” constantly be angry, mean and selfish, and not allowing them to be smart, fun, kind or wise-cracky, like male protagonists often get to be (like Nathan Drake from Uncharted). That’s what made Ellie in the first game, such a breath of fresh air! But the depiction of the female characters here is very stereotypical of a “strong women”. The same is done to Abby. Abby is also a “strong female character” but doesn’t have any real strength, agency, or control over her life. It’s very unfortunate to see another female character thrown into a tired “love triangle” with this self-centered loser character, Owen, and be pitted against his other on-off again girlfriend Mel. Why can’t Mel and Abby be friends? All of Abby’s flashbacks are about Owen, and Owen pressuring her to do things she first says no to or is obviously uncomfortable following along with. Owen is often mean to Abby, which reeks of the sexist “men are mean to you because they like you” trope. There is also a disturbing “sex scene” where Abby and Owen start fighting then it turns to “angry sex”. You spend much of Abby’s time worrying about Owen, who doesn’t seem to care much for Abby no matter how much she tries to please him. Abby and Owen’s “romance” is dated, sexist, boring, and tired and I'm shocked how much game time was dedicated to this.

    When the player assumes the role of both of these women, they are given no real choices. Due to the fact that Ellie was not given a choice whether to sacrifice herself in the first game, I thought that regarding gameplay, this game would introduce Ellie with some choices to make. But no, through the entire game, you never get to make any choices.

    I would have liked to see more of Nora and Yara as I thought both were much better written female characters, for the little game time they got.

    For a studio that claimed to put out a feminist product, I’m very disappointed that it appears we are taking steps backwards.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story is all over the place, not original and the new characters are shallow. The trailers lied to the players, giving an idea Joel would still be alive, shame on the game company for doing that. The game showed flashbacks which in a better light, telling the story of the first game in a total different way. The game has some strange things happening, like an eight month pregant going to battlefield and squeezing her belly on the floor. The game is sad and depressing which could work but releasing this type of game during an actual pandemic is really unfortunate and bad timing.

    I didn't care when/how Joel died and what happened with the story, it was the points above who made me dislike the game

Playability is pretty good and challenging but the story kinda ruined it the game for me, if you only care about killing everything that moves and surviving the game gives plenty of that, if you are in for the story you will be disappointed beyond measure. One of the Best (if not THE best) game of PS4. You can really feel the minimalism caracteristic of the last Naughty Dog Games. The story is phenomenal, you can really feel the emotions and the pain that the caracter endure. Also the music is a real masterpiece from Gustavo Santaolalla. Thank you ND for devilering such great Games.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (SPOILERS + JUST MY OPINION) If Joel was just shot in the head with a pistol and not tortured to death i think this game would have been a lot better, its just asking a bit too much to sympathize with Abby after Joel saved her then she still goes on to commit such an act with no sign of hesitation. Its not like her fathers Death was still fresh in her mind either, surely 4 years of morning would have lessened her hatred to some extent, even Ellie showed mercy to Abby after killing people she love much more recently. If Abby was built up a bit more before she killed Joel the player might have had a better understanding of her situation but the start of the game felt like a speed run to kill the fans favorite Man. There is just no enjoyable element to this game and the flashbacks of Joel and Ellie just made me more miserable because you know those times are over forever . i dont even care that the gameplay was basically copy pasted. Its a story driven game and the Story is just a mess Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

    If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
