This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll preface this review by saying the first instalment of The last of Us is one of my favourite games and that Naughty Dog are my favourite developer, so I was eagerly awaiting the release of part 2 since its announcement. I didn't have much in the way of expectations or preconceptions of what the game would be, other than that it would continue Ellie's story (since this is what we were told to expect) and we would experience her character growing and developing. Unfortunately what I experienced was a poorly constructed story filled with plot holes and little to no major character development.

While I didn't care much for how they killed Joel off, I accepted it and thought okay, his death is a device to fuel the narrative and I was looking forward to continuing the game. Over the next few hours playing through Ellie's portion of the game I enjoyed the gameplay, but still found myself struggling to feel invested in the plot and the lack of character development was disappointing. I feel like I liked Dina and Jesse just because Ellie liked them, rather than because the plot showed me any reasons to feel fond of them.

When it came to playing as Abby I found myself asking out loud why I was having to play as her continually until I realised I was going to be playing her story for quite some portion of the game. Initially I objectively did not like her, and by the end of her part of the game, I still did not like her. I found myself rushing through this part of the game (which arguably made combat parts of the gameplay more fun) because I was simply not enjoying it. I found it so hard to feel invested in her character and therefore was not incentivised to continue. When I died as Ellie I always felt some kind of reaction but dying as Abbie could not have bothered me less. Sometimes dying was more satisfying than continuing with the story. I realise that the story was designed to draw parallels between the 2 protagonists and try to make us feel empathy towards Abby but it just did not work for me. Although I did enjoy some parts of the plot surrounding Lev's story, even though the dynamic between him and Abby felt like a watered down copy of Joel and Ellie.

After a couple of days to reflect on it, I think the ending is okay it its own right. Though unsatisfying, and convoluted with a lot of symbology that would have been better spread more evenly throughout the game, I understand it. It is a bleak conclusion and not one I feel strongly for either way but it was needed. I remember playing through the chapter where we first see Ellie and Dina at their farm and thinking this looks absolutely stunning, but the story up until now has been virtually redundant. If none of the events from the point where Joel is killed transpired Dina would still be pregnant, she would still have her baby, her and Ellie would likely have ended up together since their relationship was going that way anyway - the only differences would be that they would still be living at Jackson and Joel and Jesse would still be alive. Neither Ellie nor Dina's character seemed developed through the events in Seattle. This feeling of redundancy left me massively unsatisfied.

To conclude, the gameplay and level building are exemplary but it is a poorly paced and written game that failed to make me truly care for any of the new characters, and sucked the charm out of those the original made me love. This game said too much and not enough all at the same time. I can say with genuine sadness that I did not enjoy The Last of Us Part 2, which I wanted to love so badly. It's the only game of this console generation that I've personally played that I can say I've honestly found to be an unpleasant experience. So much so that I felt the need to create a Metacritic account just to write this review.

    Graphics / Lighting / Effects / Animation -> 9.5 out of 10.0
The graphics are beautiful. The landscape and the surroundings look astonishing. The lighting especially inside of buildings with direct light, indirect light and defuse light is one of the greatest I've ever seen in a video game up until today.
    Sound / Sound effects / Music / Voice Acting -> 9.5 out of 10.0
The sound and the sound effects are on top f.e. the sound of the rainfall is impressive or the sound of the wind howling through the tall grass. Yes, you can actually hear that. The music, the score is beautiful and emotional and adds perfect to the visuals.
The Voice Actors have given their best to make their characters come to live on screen.

    Game play / Mechanics / Controls / AI -> 6.5 out 10.0
The game play and the mechanics haven't changed a lot from the first part and they still feel like 2013 and a bit outdated in 2020. There a more possibilities for modifying the weapons and the abilities of the character you are controlling/playing. But that also means that the flaws of the first part have found there way into the TLuO2. The gun play still feels a little bit clunky and so the spare ammunition is sometimes wasted in a game where every bullet counts. Sometimes the camera positioning isn't quite right, so that suddenly a clicker instantly takes you out unseen and in a stealth section your character may act uncorresponding or in an unintended fashion, because some buttons are tied to different functions simultaniously. Apropos stealth; the enemy AI is sometimes shifting between good to dump like a rock. You can flank nearly every enemy even groups in in a circular motion, so you can kill everyone or everything off from the end of that chain.

Story / Storytelling and Pacing / Characters and Character development -> 1.0 out of 10.0
The problem with TLoU2 is the story and the way it is presented. TLoU1 was a story and character driven game. That was the reason the fans loved that game so much. We played 90 % of that game as Joel and 10 % of the main story as Ellie. Then there was the DLC, which focused more on Ellie and her "coming out" and her relationship to Riley. So the fans of the first game cannot all be homophobic as Neil **** now tries to imply upon the ongoing so called "Review Bombing", which by the way happens in both directions.

The new characters are not introduced in a believable way.
The known characters from TLoU1 act completely out of place -> the way Joel dies. Ellies reaction to being lied at by Joel about Salt Lake City.
The Story is not believable. -> Abby spares Ellie and Tommy on two, different accounts.

They way the story is presented is awful. All the flashbacks are destroying the pacing of the story and the game play as well. Sometimes through all these flashback you even don't know in which timeline you are right now, when you continue to play. These time lapses and flashbacks are also interfering with any character development or introduction in this game, so that every identification or understanding of any of these new characters and there motivation is nearly impossible or not believable. And unfortunately the very good voice acting cannot safe that.

There is no build up in this story to a real climatic moment, only shocking moments of violence, which are also presented in an awful way, so that it seams, you are watching a low budget action- or horror movie.
A movie with a completely unknown cast and the one actor you know has only a minute of screen time, just enough to push the sales, because you can put him in the trailers and in the marketing like Robert Englund's appearences in so many low-budget horror flics.

In addition some of these violent scenes and acts are forced upon the player. The player has no choice, because all this is scripted and even worse, some of this scenes are intended to manipulate the player in the way he sees and feels for these characters. That is a real cheap trick by the way.

The linear, scripted and time lapsed broken story and gameplay is in my opinion a complete failure and is outdated in 2020. Naughty Dog has proven that they are not able to deliver a game in which you as a player have the choice, what you want to expercience. They are only capable of forcing you to play what they want you to play in a linear, restricted fashion.

And I am absolutely sure, if Naughty Dog would have given the player the choice and freedom to play Abby or not, most of the players would have disagreed and skipped this possability, because of the way her character was introduced or “injected” here in this way.

Here is the real Final score -> only 5.0 out of 10.0

WHY!!!! killing Joel is like killing john wick's dog, at least to us who played the first game, I'm really disappointed and probably wouldn't play a sequel, you could've just gave us what we wanted and then add a sequel about the Scars (Yara or lev story with prophet of sepharites) that would be cool, but now my only assumption of continuing the story is if SCARS raid Jackson and killed tommy and Dina for real, then Ellie and her son can take revenge, that would be pretty solid though. don't get me wrong, graphics and game-play are a 10/10, story is a 3 (being humble), i hope you think about that in your future games Naughty dog to avoid losing more fan-base and regret. gave it overall a 2. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is beautiful, but the story decisions are horrid. Probably the worst story driven game I have played in a very long time. The lack of consciousness by the development team is shocking. Instead of playing a story driven game, you play a vendetta and revenge story line that lacks because of the characters surrounding you. Then, you make me not able to finish that vendetta... You ruin both characters from the first game in this disgrace of a sequel. Atrocious decisions by this development team who honesty should not work on another Naughty Dog story game ever again. The gameplay isn’t the best because you’re searching for collectibles more than playing the story most of the time which is probably why they put so many of them in the game to distract you from probably the worst writing and development of a 2nd installment ever. This game should serve as a catalyst on how to ruin one of the best video games ever made. I am honestly shocked Sony gave the green light to release this after someone read this horrible script and plot. So many flaws and horrible decisions you’ll be baffled. There were so many ways they could have built a fantastic second installment, but this game falls flat within the first hour. If you want to play a great game and don’t care about getting mad about the story it’s a good buy. The game is average and worth a buy once it’s on sale. If you’re going to get upset and break a controller, you can surmise what they did and watch the 25+ hour waste of time on YouTube or Twitch.

Ok if we talk about the graphics of this games, we need to agree on this, they are gorgeous, the gameplay was ok, it wasn't great but it had some upgrades and smoothness while in combat, but what hits down this game into a six, is the story, it has so many plot holes and some characteristics that characters own that have nothing to do with their characteristics in the first game. For example, Joel, Joel in the first game is an unconfident man he does not trust anyone in the first game, he literally runs over a guy because he did not trust that he was injured and he knows it was an ambush, so now tell me where are this characteristic, Joel has, he literally just trust a group of guys, tells them their real names, where they live, and for worst they tell this group of not known people if they wanted they could go get supplies in their town, that just not characteristics of Joel and Tommy they would not trust anyone. It's just stupid, and finally the ending, wow that ending could not be more trash, just very poor storytelling. What a mess. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After 7 years of anticipation, I admit I was abit disappointed with what Naughty Dog brought to the table with TLoU II. It’s certainly not a 3.5 given by gamers, but it’s definitely not a 10/10 masterpiece, which is really sad to say because it had all the potential for a real game of the year contender. The backdrop for TLOU was refreshing, it brought so much content to the table & the characters were so relatable because they were so.. real with their personal struggles. I felt that naughty dog could have built on what happened after the ending instead of fast forwarding 5 years, dropping us randomly into Seattle. What went right: Graphics - I’m honestly impressed with what ND managed to pull off given how old the PS4 console is. Lighting was amazing especially in the forested areas, models were crisp, detailed and just a beauty to look at. Gameplay - improving upon the mechanics of TLOU, I find the combat system much more fluid and so satisfying every time I pop the head off the infected. Crafting & upgrading your character hasn’t really changed fundamentally, you’ll still be going around scrounging for supplies. Every gun feels punchy, weighty and powerful. Even playing on hard, the difficulty is just right without you feeling too over or under powered. There’s a bit more puzzles to solve now to catch a break every now and then. Character animations are extremely life like and it’s just a joy to play and appreciate the motion capture work ND has put into. Environment - Seattle is sprawling with Wild life, places to explore and new areas to discover. There’s so many more buildings, rooms & creepy alleys to explore with the power of the PS4. The city really feels alive as you can hear the environmental sounds around you as you explore it. What went wrong: Story, story, story - sadly ND seemed to have lost the whole point of TLOU franchise. The lack of a solid story made this into some generic action adventure game. What made TLOU a lasting impression even till this date wasn’t the gameplay but the story telling. Every character was real, with their history, motivations and personality. In contrast every character, even Ellie was bland, forgettable and just plain boring to look at. There’s nothing about them, why are they doing certain things, how did they get here, or what’s their part in this game. You could remove 90% of the characters’ dialogue and it will still be exactly the same action adventure game. Because everyone is just shooting and killing first and asking questions later! See someone, “oh I don’t know maybe I’ll just kill that person first and then figure out what’s going on on my own by scrounging up notes lying around everywhere” (Except the flashbacks, that was really extremely well done)
“That” scene that everyone hated was really just there for shock value, I felt that it had no purpose and meaning because nothing links up.
Even halfway through the game I still don’t know why is everyone doing what they are doing, why is everyone just killing everyone and not asking questions? Was the whole point of playing another perspective just to make us empathise and sympathetic to their cause? It was really quite badly executed. Instead of feeling for them, that segment was excruciating, and just painful to play. And I was just dragging my feet to complete it. Seriously ND, you can’t just expect us to sympathise with anyone you make us play. If your goal was to make the single most hated character in video gaming industry, this takes the cake. Social norms - there’s really no need to be an “inclusive” game by incorporating certain sexual orientation in life just to appease everyone. It’s painful to watch, full of cringe and just feels so... forced. There’s no history between them as far as I can tell so I don’t get why ND has to put it in. You don’t need to conform to society and please SJWs just because certain group calls for it. Adding it doesn’t automatically make it acceptable. Summary
I’d wish you would have focused more on the story and developed each character properly. And for the life of me, please remove all these unnecessary gameplay about another person, we really don’t care. If you bought God of War you’d expect to play as Kratos, and not some random creep right? Same logic. Without a strong story every aspect of the game no matter how strong just falls apart and becomes just another generic action game. There’s nothing to gel these pieces together. I look forward to another game in the next few years, ND.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would like to preface this by saying, I made this account specifically for the purpose of writing this review. I am not going to just leave the score I am going to provide genuine criticism. Overall review at the very bottom. Now, let's get into it.

The Last of Us Part 2 as a standalone game wouldn't be bad. It would be okay at best. Kinda generic story, decent combat, and excellent visuals. However, since this is the sequel to The Last of Us, one of my favorite games of all time and one of the best games ever made, we must look at this game in a different light. In my opinion, this game has the foundation to be fantastic, but falls short in it's writing. Visuals are superb, combat is as good as the original, and the characters have a good base layer of depth. However, it goes no deeper than that, and we'll pick it apart, one by one.

Jesse. I'm starting with him first cuz well, there's not much to say. All we really know about him is he used to date Dina and hung out with Ellie a lot. Aside from that, I couldn't say, he's a cool guy just, there's no depth.

Dina. I actually really liked Dina. She was a cool character and I wanted to know more about her, however, we don't get much outside of "She's Ellie's girlfriend" which is fine, but, now we're only caring about her because we care about Ellie. I wanted to know Dina *more*, show us some flashbacks of them building that relationship higher and higher to get to where it's at. Then, I would've been much more emotionally invested in her.

Abby. I liked Abby as the villain, I did. However, I did not like how Naughty Dog tried to make us sympathize with her. Joel and Ellie in our eyes, are the good guys. And with Abby killing Joel, there is just no way I can ever like her like I like them. The entire time playing as her I hated it. Ya we got backstory and I appreciate it, but it could've been told differently instead of making us play as her, and forcing us to beat the s**t out of characters we love.

Joel and Tommy. Now I am grouping these two together because I have the same issue with both of them. You cannot convince me logically, that Tommy and Joel, would have trusted Abby like they did. It just wouldn't happen. Joel and Tommy from the original game didn't trust a damn soul besides themselves and their families. So for Tommy and Joel to put themselves in that situation, makes no sense. Even to go as far as giving out their full names? No way. That's not the Joel and Tommy I know.

Finally, Ellie. Ooooh, this one hurts. Ellie is such a bold departure from her original character. To tell me that Ellie is going to watch Abby kill her two father figures, her girlfriend, and one of her friend, then let her live? Ya no. Sorry, that is just completely unrealistic to me. No human would ever go through that much stress and trauma, just to give up right at the end. Just doesn't happen.

What could have made it better? In my opinion, this: start the game with a little prologue showing Ellie and Joel younger, not first game young but, a little older than that. Show their relationship or lack their of, show us a little bit more of Ellie's emotion after finding out what Joel did to the Fireflies, and introduce us to her relationship with Dina and Jesse to show how they've been growing together. Then, around the mid game mark, thrown in Abby, looking for Joel to seek her revenge. While out on patrol with Dina, Ellie gets captured by Abby and is tortured trying to get info on Jackson and whether or not Joel is there. Then, let us play as Joel a bit on his way to rescue her, and in his attempt, he get shot and killed in front of Ellie, trying to save her.

Then, the game moves on to Ellie's revenge plot. And this time she *actually* gets revenge. During this time either cut out all of Abby's part of the game or atleast shorten it, or show us things in cutscenes. Then to wrap it all up, Ellie kills Abby, and takes revenge for Joel. I get the message of the game is "revenge is bad" but that could've been shown in like an epilogue scene, where Ellie has PTSD or something along those lines, and she is haunted by the horrible things she did, instead of killing off all the major characters we liked.

Overall I give the game a 5 cuz if you're only playing it for the gameplay, you'll have a good time, but the story just isn't there, even if you didn't play the first game, some actions just make you go like, wait, what?

I am pretty disappointed by the creative choices Naughty Dog. Trying to force your perspectives on the community is not what we're here for. We are here to enjoy the world that was created by the original.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay is a refined version of the original. Playing grounded is heavily recommended. The story is just horrendous with the pacing, lackluster of character development, unnatural dialogue, illogical plot, and felt rushed. They disrespected Joel and Ellie. The game made Joel seem like an incompetent survivor leading to his death, which his death didn’t make sense at all. Joel felt like a short lived cameo rather than a crucial side character to drive the plot forward, but rather the plot drags him. Ellie had no character development except being in a pissy mood the whole game. Ellie literally kills everyone and sacrifices everything to waste her opportunity to kill Abby. Just don’t get me started on how they kept shoving down the same theme of revenge repeatedly. The only good thing about this game is the soundtrack, gorgeous aesthetics and graphic fidelity, refined stealth mechanic, and the intense set pieces that fuels you with adrenaline. This is coming from a person that played the whole game with an open mind and on grounded difficulty. This game would be alright if it was a stand alone game not associated with TLOU. Expand

One of the best games I’ve ever played graphically. So beautiful every step of the way (3). The fighting/ combat aspect was also very fun and enjoyable (2). The story is what kills the game. To leave an audience as big as thing game was going to receive an ending like this one is just cruel (1/2). Total - (5.5/10)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: Astonishing visuals. Incredibly impressive graphics to the point that I personally am surprised it can even run on a PlayStation 4. Also applies to the animations; very realistic and expressive.
Sound Design: Equally as impressive as the visual fidelity of the game. The age and imperfect condition of the weapons are both seen and heard in the rusted chambers of guns, specifically the rifle.

    Cons:
Story & Characters: The first few hours are alright. While Joel does get killed by vengeful ex-Fireflies, his character arc was over and he had served his purpose. From then on, however, the story actively pursues the objective of making the player miserable. The decent gameplay is marred entirely by being forced to play as a despicable character - Joel's remorseless killer - for half of the game and leaves the player either begging for the 10+ hour Abby section to end, or they just quit the game entirely.

Summary: Quality graphics can only go so far when the story you're playing is trying to depress you. Every hint of happiness is crushed sooner or later, and reflects well Naughty Dog's mantra of "we don't use the word 'fun.'" Truly, if it weren't for the okay Ellie sections nearer to the start and the wonderful visuals, this game would have a rock bottom score from me.

Gameplay, graphics and the character animation is absolutely fantastic, one of the best for the ps4 however the story has some many holes in it and I feel was very disrespectful to the fans of Joel and Ellie, why would anyone want to play as abby after she has tortured and murdered Joel, and especially for as long as you do play as abby, also another kick in the teeth for fans is the blatant lies that they did by showing scenes with an older Joel to make you think he is the game for a long time to then find out it is all flashbacks, it's a big shame as this game with a even a couple changes in the story would have been phenomenal. It exceeded my expectations, although as Neil said, this game would be opposite to the first, based on hatred. at the end it shows us the development of the character in Ellie, Forgiving Abby and in the beautiful final scene, a day before Joel dies, Pulling out all his feelings, Joel just nods, knowing that from now on, they will both be trying to get back to being like before, seeking his redemption, and so Joel, despite his death.Die in peace with Ellie, with Tommy and the people who loved him so much. For who wrote the story: You could actually use the whole game to talk about Abby's story and let Joel die at the end of this game, to give us enough time to understand this new character and also the whole story from another perspective... Then save the story of this game for TLOU Part 3 if there is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, the most amazing graphics I’ve ever seen in a game I can just imagine how good it’ll look on PS5. However, as you may already know the story was quite opposite. People who worked on the first one didn’t work on the second one and I think that’s one of the reason it’s on that level. A lot of the plot seems very forced and the timings are just plain stupid. Ellie and Dina are making out just before the death of Joel, imagine the guilt. While Joel, tommy and Abby are running from the infected, tommy out of nowhere just tells Abby their names, while literally running from zombies For no reason And it felt so forced you could really tell it and it just took you out of the immersion. Abby was saved by Joel and didn’t even think twice before brutally torturing him to death that is either very lazy story telling or the studio wanted us to have hatred against Abby. If so, then why on earth did we play as her for 10 hours, the game tries and makes us feel bad for her but it’s just made everyone hate her even more. She has done so many evil actions. The flashbacks were what everyone really loved and honestly they should release a game with just the flashbacks. Naughty dog is known for misleading trailers even in tlou1. In the ending where Ellie is about to kill Abby she gets a flashback of Joel and instead of getting angrier she just lets her Abby go. All in all, it felt like a very forced game with very little reasoning and I feel like it could have been much better if the staff of the previous one worked on this one aswell. Expand

Don't be influenced by the review bombs of user reviews, not all of them owns a copy of the game. That said i hope metacritic get some or be integrated with playstation, having an API to show real owners.

About three-fourths of the way through the game and ask myself "why?". It felt like lazy writing and things happen "just cause". I would overall rate the story a 3/10.
Next is gameplay, which didn't change much from the first TLOU. The game feels like a walking simulator with occasional button mashing and shooting. I did like the diversity of character styles, but the combat system left much to be desired. After a 7 year wait for this game, I feel that it lacked substantial change and did not separate itself from the original style. Overall, I would give Gameplay a 3/10. Lastly, visuals and eye candy. This game is substantially better looking than the original. Lots of great views and settings that show how much care went into the visual development. Occasionally the facial expressions of characters are a little unsettling and awkward to look at, but it is new tech, so we won't put too much of a penalty for it. Overall, visuals sit at a very nice 9/10!

Final average score puts this game at a ⁵/10. I wouldn't recommend buying it unless you are okay with drawn out walking segments, lackluster combat, and a story that doesn't make much sense.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The most sad thing about this game is the fact that neil druckmann didn't understand **** from the first game. Joel and tommy aren't the type to just trust strangers. His excuse was that age made them loose their guard? Fk outta here. I'm ok with joel dying, he had to pay for his actions but this was poorly executed and Manny, the guy that spits and calls him a "pendejo" doesn't help. Then you have to spend hours playing with muscle hulk killing innocent people, tribes, etc. And naughty tries to make you feel sorry for her because she saves 2 kids and loves dogs? Due to the way Joel's death was executed makes this game hard to play knowing that it will only go down hill. Abbs witnesses her own people die but doesn't say a single word. All the characters are easily forgotten, ignored or never brought up again. It feels like they weren't nothing but fillers/puppets. With Ellie, she gets PTSD due to watching joel getting killed but during her killing spree, not once did she have a PTSD attack or episode. WTF neil, do you not know **** about PTSD? Once again Joel gets disrespected and Ellie kills one of abbs friends in the same way joel was killed but not once did she have a PTSD episode. Ellie only feels disgust after killing some individuals such as Mel (Mel was pregnan and Ellie found out) and...Oh that's right, the other characters don't matter. Anyways, the only two characters that were interesting were the 2 tribal kids that abbs saved because she loves kids (but is still a serial murderer psychopath). Thier their stories characters are amazing and so is thier back story. That's the kind of Naughty Dog I like to see but that's about it lol. The ending was upsetting due to Ellie Freeing Abs and Levs but then wants to fight abs? Ellie is about to end abs but gets a Flash of Joel which ultimately means that Abs is free to leave with Lev, alive. During the fight, Ellie got 2 of her fingers bitten off, Jo was Killed, Dina her Love was killed as well as thier child, Jesse her best friend was killed, abd Tommy Joel's brother was almost taken from her. Ellie Loses everything, she's dead inside at the end while Abs gets Lev and didn't give a single **** about her friends that died? This game had to many holes, storytelling was lazy as fk and theme is not good lol. You stripped the theme out of all it's meaning.

Gameplay: 6/10 (same **** from LOUS, $60 is not worth jumping and prone Neil)
Graphics: 8/10 (beautiful atmosphere but is not open as it Bi-linear to the **** physics were cool, light was alright, top Naughty Dog as always)
Story: 5/10 (Not a good story, easily one of Naught's worst. Conflicting themes, and juxtapositios in the environment. Too any holes in the stroy and dog**** execution)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us: Part 2 wasn’t a terrible game in any way shape or form, under any other title it would be seen as a great game. But the fact that the initial game was so great and the standards were so high for a sequel, it somehow seemed destined to fail. It was one of the most beautiful games I’ve played. The attention to detail of the characters and the feels of the areas you explore are immensely pleasing. The core visual of the game could be mistaken for cutscenes at points. I can tell the effort put into the game visually and gameplay wise were very thorough and it showed. Where the game kind of lost me was the storyline and the feelings the game left me with. When I ended the game I set down my controller and I didn’t feel positive, I didn’t feel as if I completed a great triumph or just had an unforgettable experience with the game. It left me in regret. I wish I hadn’t played the game. A lot of the story seems out of place. There are flashbacks in random points that either interrupt the story or don’t give anything really meaningful, (though the flashbacks with Joel were very beautiful and sweet to play through). The characters had no meaning to me because they were introduced and were killed before we got to know them, and they are either 1)later revealed to be a good person and we should feel guilty for it (I never felt guilty) or 2) were not touched on at all for the rest of the game. The plot was very simple minded. We all would want to get revenge in a situation Ellie was put in obviously but I feel like it could’ve taken a much better and more controversial approach, where it could leave you wondering if you made the right decision or not. I didn’t mind Joel’s death, in fact I think it needed to happen, but the revenge plot just made the story seem one-dimensional. Additionally, a lot of the points I felt bored with the repetitious gameplay and it didn’t feel like anything new or dangerous was around the corner. Lastly, the whole zombie/ infected outbreak was kind of abandoned. Not a single important person was bit or infected which gave me the impression that they kind of got rid of the outbreak being a point to drive/ break the story. It felt wrong in that sense. In conclusion, The Last of Us: Part 2 is a ‘good’ game but the fact that it was a sequel to one of the best games to have graced our screens made it feel pretty poorly thought out and executed. I didn’t wait 7 years to play a ‘good’ game after I had played an unforgettable experience. It, in all honesty, left me with a sick taste in my mouth and makes me not want to touch another story driven game for a long while because I’m afraid to be left with the same taste Expand

It's not because Joel died but HOW he died!

The Joel in the sequel completely contradicts who he was in the 1st just to favour the plot.
That is a pure example of poor storytelling .

Being forced to play a irredeemable character for the later half of the game is just pointless and feels infuriating to play!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok so...ill do it as clear as i can. here we go...
i played the first game on Ps 3 and PS4.
i finished this game so many times. from easy to grounded mode. I EVEN DID ELLIE'S TATTOO! FOR GOD SAKE! i loved so much the first part. it gives me chills. 7 years after and here the sec' part came out.. i really hated the way they killed Joel. after all he did and all his travel... he getting killed like a side figure... ffs. oh and don't forget how Jesse died. about manny - man i dont give a F*** about him. so anyway i hated every second of joel's death. every second.
in this pary Ellie was weak then the first part. where all the anger? The adrenaline, the courage, and of course - the revenge? (Spoiler: No revenge.)
I'm sure Joel flips around in the grave now and curses Elile now. He must also be disappointed.
the grapchis was amazing. i really liked it. I loved the little details of course, if you kill an enemy - and another enemy finds the one you killed, he tells the other enemies that (for example) Ron is dead! Look for her! Be focused I loved the weapon upgrade animation. Something that wasn't in the first game, I liked that, for goodness sake, you could finally slip into battle between zombies or enemies.
I don't really have a problem about Elile and Dina's relationship, I'm not a homophobe, even I was with them.
The only thing I really disliked is playing as Abigail (pretty sure it's her full name) I don't care what her cause of revenge on Joel, I don't care. I also care about the way the developers chose to kill such a character.
Okay we realized, he murdered Abigail's dad in the hospital, they postponed the game so many times and couldn't think of another way to kill Joel? I don't care about Jesse and Manny anymore. (Tommy scared me a bit too but he survived)
Yes I care about the way. For me, there was no creativity in this game. They destroyed all the reputation they had, which they had built over the years.
What am I supposed to do now ... and again, I have no problem with his death. It was quite predictable. Even without the spoilers, I knew he was going to die, there didn't have to be a scientist to know that. But yes I had a problem with the way they chose to kill him, killing him like it was just another bottle stopper.
    for me its 510.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hated this game, at first. I still hate it, but only because it's a sequel to the first. I've come to be at peace with the idea that Ellie only came to forgive Joel after doing to others for revenge what Joel did to save her, allowing her to see the error of their ways and to understand how he felt making the decision that he did. I do think this is a good story in that regard, and that this was how a sequel would have had to go, even if it's not the best execution in my opinion. However, the whole thing that made the ending of the first special to me was the inner conflict that you felt knowing that you had done what was undeniably the wrong thing, yet you felt that you could justify it to yourself because the game had developed the relationship between Joel and Ellie so well that you could not help but be happy that they were together. It left a bittersweet feeling in your soul, and Joel's promise to Ellie made you feel a guilt that made it a beautiful ending, not quite a happy one. This game actively destroys that ending by making you wish that Joel had left Ellie to die, so that she wouldn't suffer like she did in part 2.

I do think they are both amazing stories, but my issues lay with the fact that what makes the second game great is in conflict with what made the first game great, and to me the first one will always be the better half. Part 2 is simply a miserable experience that destroys everything great about the first game, in the name of an admittedly powerful and emotional story. It's just not a sacrifice I think should have been made.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II... a long awaited sequel for the fans!
This game is by far one of my favourites under graphics! Level of detail is amazing, animation to movements, details on terrain, clothes, weapons, you name it! It looks gorgeous! Everywhere you look is a piece of art so bonus points for that! Level design is also awesome!
For the story? Not so great. The writing is bad.
The fans have been wondering and theorizing on what's going to happen for our main characters for Joel and Ellie and other lovable characters during the first one. After long years of waiting... we get a revenge story that is not fulfilled.
The only best moments in the game by far is the flashbacks with young Ellie and Joel. Awesome moments and makes your heart warm.
To be honest, I really wish Joel should've got more play time... he died fairly quick during the beginning of the game.
The ending... oh that ending... what was the point of the whole game when it ends just like that... you don't get to kill Abby, you let her live, and go back home with two missing fingers with an abandoned farmhouse, played the guitar, had a flashback to Joel, leave and roll the credits. What was the point of all that? Abby KILLED Joel ffs! A lovable and badass character killed just like that. Ellie's drive on killing Abby is off the roof then her drive just switched off out of no where in the end... It almost as if this sequel was pointless.

Would I recommend this game as a Last of Us fan? Nope.

Would you buy this full price? Nah... buy it when it goes on a big sale or wait until PS+ makes it a free game in the future.

Is this game gonna be Game of the Year? Absolutely not!

For hardcore Naughty Dog fans, I am truly sorry about this game. I can feel the huge disrespect in your face. A long awaited game is here and ends in a really horrible way.

The technical section very well achieved. This for me would have been a 10/10, if it was based solely on the first half of the game. I may be one of the few who didn't have a problem with the first plot twist of the game. It pissed me off a treat and got me pumped for the next part. However, the second half of the game is where it really fell apart. Being forced to play in a certain way and feel someones agenda being forced onto us, seemed unnecessary and in al fairness, killed the game. By the end I couldn't wait for the credits to roll. I was free running through the last parts of the game , not even caring about threats or being bothered to pick up resources. The game had beat me, but not in the way it should have. I even got so bored i came up with fun ways to throw myself of buildings. The visuals were stunning, game play was good, and I loved some of the Ellie flash backs. That's why it pains me to have to give this game such a low rating. Shame on you Naughty Dog; who probably wont care as their wallets will be brimming. Wish I had saved my money. Shame Expand

The ending was awful, the decision to have the player play half the game as someone everyone hates, is astonishingly stupid. I cant drive home enough the amount of insanely horrible narrative choices were made in this game. Its unfortunate, I LOVED the first game, I have played it at least ten times, including Left Behind DLC which is also amazing. Neil Druckman ruined this game, and I am extremely sad about that. Adiotanlly the game introduces Abby, and way to early she kills a certain beloved character(in a pretty psychopathic way), so then we have to play as her, and the game utilizes cheap tactics such as a very short and bad introduce back story as well as dogs, but in the end you cannot empathize with her.
The end just doesn't make sense and the main plot of the entire franchise feels completely wasted. When the best part of a game are the flashbacks then clearly something I'd wrong.
    The game is not a 3.4 but it isn't a 9.5 either.
So if you are a person who loves videogames for the experience in terms of gameplay go ahead, you will like it. But if you are a passionate of a good story, like me, then no, this game is not for you.

I could've done without 10 to 12 hours. Found myself a little bored at times. Spoiler Alert... I was hoping to play with Joel more but the game minimizes that to another level. I didn't like that especially since the trailer Clearly shows him showing up and saying he wouldn't let Ellie got through it alone. Boom! I'm thinking another adventure with Joel and Ellie but this time Ellie is the main character. Joel plays back up but nope. They lied and misled everyone. Wow, just wow! The game just goes down from here on. The story is lazy and contrived. I like the concepts that they were bringing out but maybe for Last of us 3 or 4. I feel like the game could have been more palatable if they changed the sequence in the way the scenes were placed. Instead we a multi-flashback mess. I love Naughty Dog, but i dont know what the hell this game was. The end wasn't satisfying as was the overall game. Expand

    • The dodge mechanic seemed to be a required quick time event to trigger the advancement of some fight sequences, which was confusing and felt unnecessarily gated.

At the end of the day, this is a story driven game. While I generally enjoyed some of the combat elements of the game, I did not like the plot of the story. Perhaps I will change my opinion in time, but for now my feelings are mixed towards this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The graphics and sound effects are excellent. But this is also the only really good thing.

The gameplay is similar to the first part, which isn't necessarily bad. But after 7 years of development one could have expected more. For my taste there are also too many annoying Quick-Time events.

The AI opponents are blind in places and mostly follow fixed routes. This could have been done better in an AAA game.

The story is the real point of criticism. It is garbage.

First the death of Joel: He is letting himself be led like a lamb to the slaughter in the first two hours of the game. Tommy has also lost all of his survivor instint. With the early death of Joel one feels screwed because the trailers suggest he's going off with Ellie. This was the first point – two hours into the game! – where i considered quitting.

Still the game had the potential to entertain me because Ellie was still left. But her character development was a total failure. The multi-layered personality of the first part became a female captain Ahab, who wanted to slay his white whale at all costs. Totally flat. The only thing you can say about Ellie in the second Part oft he game ist that she's lesbian, vindictive, and extremely dangerous. She has become absolutely boring.

But the really **** part is that you have to play half the game as Abby, the murderess of Joel. She is a completely psyopathic, testosterone-damaged mass murderer who enjoys killing. One of the most unsympathetic characters I have ever seen in a game/film. Compared to her, Joffrey Baratheon is a lovable guy. When the gameplay switched to Abby i stopped playing, but restarted later to hopefully get revenge on her. So I spent half of the game thinking, "When am I going to switch back to Ellie and be able to kill Abby?

But even that is not to happen. In the end, after Ellie has lost everyone and sacrificed everthing for her revenge and is literally seconds away from killing Abby, she just stops and lets her go. Wow, that is like Captain Ahab stopping to stab Moby Dick because in the last moment he recognizes the senselessnes of his acts.
Why does the player not get the choose what to do? Every third-class RPG gives you choice an builds an individual end based on your choices.

One can sum up the story oft he game with one sentence: revenge ist bad. That´s it.

In the end TLOU2 is a solid survival action game with great graphics, great sound and an average gameplay.
However, the plot is more than thin and the characters are hollow and unsympathetic.

I did not enjoy the game at all and would personally give it zero points.
But since only half of it is bad - story and character development - 5 points seemed more appropriate. It is works as an undemanding shooting game.

Saying that, TLoU is a praised for it's narrative and it's relatable characters, and this sequel does not deliver that same level of storytelling we see in the first game. There's plenty of spots in the game that could have resulted in a more compelling story and characters but the placement and pace of the game didn't accomplish what the game was trying to do. I must say it started well but lost it's momentum as you played through. In the end the game felt hollow and fell flat on it's main revenge based theme.

The story on it’s own could have been decent, however, being a successor to the 2013 masterpiece makes it pure nonsensical trash that feels like trolling more than a continuation to the epic journey from the first part. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Positive points : This game certainly pushes the limits of graphics in the previous generation and might also give competition to the next gen games that are gonna come out with the release of ps5, the level of detail in acting and audio is one of the best I've ever seen, plus the gameplay has also improved drastically even though the basics of the gameplay is still that of its predecessor.
Negative points : The story is an edgy piece of crap trying to shout "Oh look how different the story is, look what a piece of art this is, look we killed the main character in the first 2 hours of the gameplay and then made you play as his killer for more than 10 hours in order to have some sympathy for Abby and waste your time in the process" throughout the whole game. Personally, I like sad and grim stories in movies, tv shows, games, books etc. and most of the things i've seen tends to work perfectly on an emotional level, but this game seems to have done the opposite despite being a sad story. Throughout the game, i felt no emotional attachment to the game after Joel's death as I had literally no control over the events occuring in the gameplay or the cut scenes whatsoever(especially the end), yet the game constantly tries to show me how bad the decisions i made by killing hundreds of NPCs Humans and dogs were even though I killed them all because i had no choice over the actions while playing as Ellie. It feels like the writers of the Lou2 tried to shove their own ideas and thoughts while at the same time scrapping everything the first game was built on. Games are supposed to be fun even if the story is sad, the first part was extremely sad, but it was still a fun game as the chemistry between Joel and Ellie was so intriguing, and the audience wanted to know what more will happen to both of their relationship, the cure, the fireflies and other major parts. Scrapping the whole game, killing Joel early on in the game, and making the previous characters naturally unlikeable just for the sake of establishing new bland characters seems like a pretty goddamn dumb idea to me, because clearly it didn't work with the majority of the Lou fan base, not to mention the game was way too lengthy too. If anyone is going into this game without playing the first part, you might like it man but for someone who had waited for over 7 years for this, I feel thoroughly disappointed and dissatisfied with the final product. So much for a generic revenge plot, holy **** Neil/Naughty Dog.

Being able to go prone to hide in grass and jump down from a high platform to take down an enemy from below are great additions to stealth and combat. Animations look very smooth and it is satisfying to watch the brutal take downs. The visuals in this game are absolutely beautiful and some of the best graphics on the PS4.

However, these get overshadowed by the game's story. This game's story and characters are very poor. I simply did not care for many of the main characters in this game. The new characters that were introduced are uninteresting and characters brought back from the last game don't act like themselves. This game's story is far from perfect, with an intro that will leave a bad taste in your mouth for the rest of the game and an unsatisfying ending. During my playthrough I thought I was near the end of the game and I was ready for it to end only to find out I was just half way through the game. The halfway point of the game is what made me really lose interest, and I imagine many other people feel the same way.

The game isn't the worst game ever made by any means, and i don't think it deserves a score of 0/10, but it's poor story and characters doesn't make it a masterpiece that deserves a 10/10. The game has fun combat and stealth mechanics along with stunning visuals, but a game that is very plot-driven needs to have a good plot. I avoided all spoilers for the sequel and went in trusting the team at naughty dog to deliver an outstanding experience once more with this new entry. I could not believe how badly the team approached this project, given the amount of time it was in production. Here are the main issues I have with this game. 1. Joel’s death early in the game was a huge shock and the set up was completely out of character for both him and Tommy. 2. The writing and dialogue between characters is of a much lower standard compared to the first game. 3. The new character Abby who you’re forced to play as, after killing Joel is a real low point. They try and build up a relationship with the player to show her side of the story and reasons for killing Joel. This feels forced and goes on way to long. 4. This redemption arc goes out the window when she starts killing all the wolves members who she knew and was a part of for years. 5. Tommy gets shot in the head and some how pops up at the end of the game. 6. The pacing of the game at the end feels like it will never end, it’s dragged out way too long, 7. The way that Tommy spoke to Ellie at the end of the game was so out of character it was laughable. I’m giving this game a 5 out of 10 because of the graphics, which are outstanding. The reason the majority of people loved the first game was because of the story and relationships between characters. I really wanted to like this game. I have never written a review before and just thought I would try and give an honest opinion on why I think naughty dog missed the mark with this game. Expand

Story was drawn out way too long and relied on flashbacks for feel good moments to cover up Joel's crappy death and the fact they made Joel and Tommy looked like idiots to kick start the revenge plot. Other than those flashbacks, the game is practically devoid of any lighthearted moments like that were in the first game.

The story and characters are the weakest element in this game. If you want to turn your brain off to go on a killing spree and watch a bunch of cinematics, this is the game for you. Everything else was good to great.

Good graphics meh gameplay bad story. last of us 1 but with graphics upgrade and more of an edgelord story than the last of us 1's admittedly grim yet hopeful story

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
