The game is fantastic, it isn’t perfect but it’s damn near it. A ten doesn’t mean a game is completely flawless but it recognizes it as a monumental achievement, which the last of us part two absolutely is. Please play this game it’s worth your time and the leaks are not representative of the whole plot!

In Last of Us 1, we were given the introduction to this bleak, violent, and turbulent post-pandemic world where human civilization is fractured. In the chaos, we the players get to experience the connection and bond that grows between two distinct characters (Joel and Ellie) leading to an ending that naturally makes most people feel sympathetic of Joel's decision to save Ellie (despite the lives he took to rescue her). It was a brilliant ending.

Coming into Last of Us 2, it's important to realize that while on the surface, the game seems like a continuation of their character arcs (in a darker way), it is about something far deeper than that. In my opinion, the game actually isn't really about Joel and Ellie (or any "character arcs"), but more about asking the ethical questions of human reactions and emotions when put into intensely emotional and bleak situations. It asks you to look beyond any specific person to understand the depth of humanistic emotions and characteristics when faced with tragedy juxtaposed with an apocalyptic environment. It makes you realize, there are no real heroes and villains here, this is about something deeper and it requires you to open your mind to appreciate the bold direction the writers chose to take.

It frustrates me that most people who scored the game poorly and remark on the perceived bad or broken story line, cannot seem to get past the feelings they established about Joel/Ellie from the first game. This is a VERY different game from that one, and with good reason. If the developers and writers tried to make this game be a continuation of the first game, I believe most people would have gotten bored with it. The reality is this is NOT Uncharted, or Star Wars, or a similar type game where you are focused on specific character and relationship arcs and can thus have specific expectations in terms of how they should be portrayed (or how/when to appropriately dispose of a character). I truly believe that the writers wanted you to walk away from this game with an emotional experience and asking ethical questions about the lengths you would go to save, protect, or avenge the people you care about (similar to the first game but on a much grander scale). It's about emotional themes and human character more than any specific character arc. In that way I believe this game is special, unique, and definitely worthy of your time and play through.

Aside from all that, the gameplay is amazing. I absolutely LOVED that there was a custom difficulty option. I played through with all settings on Survivor but resources on Hard. This gave me sufficient resources to approach different combat sequences with variety instead of always having to sneak. I really hope games moving forward consider making custom difficulty settings standardized.

In summary, breath-taking graphics, gritty intense gameplay, and a story that will make you experience emotions and reflect on a wide range of human character traits such as despair, rage, perseverance, and the will to survive when faced with tragedy and impossible situations. It's a game I will never forget and look forward to playing again.

Thank you to the Naughty Dog team for your hard work in making this incredible game! I hope you never give up on making these significant single player experiences in a day and age where some game companies are trending away from single player games. I highly recommend this amazing single player experience! 10/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't read this if you haven't played the game. SPOILER HEAVY! You've been warned.

I stayed away from all the spoilers and had the opportunity to play this game the way Naughty Dog intended. This game first appears to be like any other cookie-cutter vengeance/revenge story, but it slowly morphs into a compelling narrative with deeper themes. In fact, the game analyzes the very nature of vengeance, itself, and examines what this type of mentality can do to those who seek it out. If you are looking for a cheap revenge story, look elsewhere. This game is going to be over your head and you won't leave with any sense of satisfaction as a result.

Many people misunderstand the final fight with Abby and assume that Ellie forgives her. Honestly, the final fight (to me) has nothing to do with Abby. It is all about Ellie and how she is unable to let go of her own guilt and the things holding her still. Throughout the story, Ellie keeps tapping into a darkness inside of her (this is very evident in scenes like when she beats Nora for information). She is seeking vengeance at that point in the game, and much like Abby she is laser-focused on achieving that goal. It is not easy to play a character you love go through that.

Playing as Abby in the second half of the game is not an attempt to make people care about her (in my opinion). Rather, it is meant to show what being obsessed with vengeance does to a person. And like it or not, if you were on board with killing Abby then you are kind of on board with killing Joel, too. It's the same type of vengeance, forcing a player to actually ask whether it matters who is right or wrong.

In the end, I cared about Ellie. I didn't want her to seek vengeance because I watched what it did to Abby... Abby gives up a chance at a happy life with Owen and dedicates her life to finding her father's killer.

In the same way, Ellie gives up her happy life with Dina. Why? Vengeance. The result? She loses everything she has... just like Abby. With that done, Ellie can find something to live for. So she leaves her last behind and she seems just that. Brilliant game!

Ellie has to decide to let go. Her final memory with Joel is about trying to forgive him, a desire to start anew. Ellie wanted to work toward forgiving Joel for what he did at the end of the first game (robbing her death of purpose). In the sequel's final fight, Ellie doesn't have to forgive Abby. Abby is a ghost to her, a nothing... a shell of what she once hated. Maybe even a reflection of what she has become. And thinking of Joel saves her in the end. So how does Joel's death serve no purpose? It sounds like it has a profound purpose to me. Ellie has to make the conscious decision to let go---to release the nightmares that prevented her from moving on. She does that, in the end. She is a stronger character because of it. If she didn't make that choice, she would keep seeking out her demons, ignoring Joel's advice at the end of the first game to find things worth living for. Ellie's entire life has been spent living up to what other people chose for her. The fireflies wanted her to be a sacrifice to save humanity, so she trekked out to find them. Joel wanted her to be a second daughter, so she stayed with him. Dina wanted her to be a farm wife. Tommy wanted her to be a tool for vengeance. In this game, Ellie deals with all of those influences. Everything she touches goes sour. So she chooses to let go. In the end, she can start being her. She gets to choose that destiny. Explain how that isn't a fantastic ending?

Finally, to address the topic of "Joel would never trust a stranger or let his guard down around one" and other such criticisms I keep hearing: At the end of the first game, Joel changes. Don't know if you all caught onto that or not, but he starts opening up about Sarah, starts making plans with Ellie and genuinely wants to put his past behind him. The idea that four years living in civilization and raising another daughter would have no effect on him or change his outlook is absurd. Ellie changed him in the first game. Why wouldn't she continue to have that effect for FOUR more years?

Maybe, just maybe, try to approach the game with a reasoned open mind. You might enjoy what you find there. Then again, a lot of people were unwilling to give this game a fair shake from the start.

Obviously, there are people who play the game and hate it. Not trying to say this game is perfect. It isn't. It's perfectly fine that not everyone enjoyed the game. But when a game gets THIS much criticism and is actually put together extremely well, one does have to wonder if maybe this title is just too ahead of its time and simply wasted on this generation? Sadly, I cannot dive into the criticisms of the game that I do have because of the nonsensical review bombing. So I will finish the review here. None of it's flaws detract from a beautifully crafted narrative.

The history it's way too long. Graphiclly it's a well designed game, but we have to think that this game comes from a 2013 game, so it's logical to have some issues and non-well-designed actions and cinematics. The ending it's just unnecesary and horrible. Way too long, way too unnecesary.

The Last Of Us is a "Story" driven game (for all intents and purposes), and the story in part II (episode 2) is no where near the original game. Therefore anyone claiming one has to play the game to gain understanding of the "story" (use the term loosely) in part II is very ignorant. Gameplay does not affect the story in any way in part II, it's simply the vehicle through which the player travels through the story. Thus all the claims about gameplay are irrelevant...The Last Of Us was never praised for gameplay. it gained acclaim because of it's plot, which was creative in several aspects. The main four being how the cordyceps virus affected humans, the relationship between Joel, and Ellie, what Ellie meant for mankind, and the nuance of all these things blended together.

You get nothing like the above in Part II, there is a complete focus on violence, and despair. The game is quite dangerous in this aspect, as it's easy to see depression set in as a result. The Last Of us part II is a game depressed individuals should definitely not play. It is a game about "revenge", which are a dime a dozen. A cliche plot point, which is beyond overused at this point, and offers nothing to fans of the original game, when compared to it.

Objectively, it is impossible to do a continuation of The Last Of Us...seeing as it's like the end of a book series. There is only room for a prequel (Ground zero for outbreak) or a middle sequence (Joel, Tess, Tommy, and Marlene lives up til the start of the original game) to the aforementioned "book" series analogy. I rate the game a 2...1 point for graphics, and 1 for gameplay, any other numerical value solely resided with the story of the game.

I knew I’d enjoy it because of how much I loved TLOU I love the fact that in this one you get to explore even more to find new things that help you upgrade your equipment so that it doesn’t get old very quick. But...now for what I dislike THE STORY...the dialogue at times is very dry and seems like they are trying to get and emotional reaction that isn’t earned...and don’t even let me get started on Abby this is probably the worst video game character I’ve seen (worse then Micah)..they try to justify what she did which I can kinda understand but the biggest issue is that you are forced to play with someone that you don’t want to...I knew for a long time that this game would probably be Joel’s last but never did I think they’d toss him aside like garbage after we all got to know and love this character and if the direction of the 3rd is going where I believe (which is following Abby) then I think I’m done with this series.. sorry I began to rant lol but all in all I think the game is beautiful and a masterpiece visually but the story to me is what games are really about so it just ruined the experience for me Expand

First things first: If you listen to anybody saying "agenda, feminism" or things like that to criticize this game, stop them and remind them: First, Ellie was based on the actress Ellen Page, who revealed to be a lesbian on TV and has been continuously fighting for the lgbt community. Ellie was created like that, we can see it in the first game and confirm it on the DLC. The game is set for the most part in Seattle, a city which is symbol for lgbt rights and many others. The trailers showed us that. This is not agenda, Bill from the first game was also homosexual and nobody was complaining about it. I'm really happy they decided to stick to this decision.

Second: IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO FINISH THIS GAME IN A DAY. And I mean it, I took my 28 hours of gameplay to finish it, spread out during Friday to Monday. Most of the bad scores came on the first day and the reason for that is obvious: There's a scene in the beginning that, in my opinion, exists only to divide who is not going to play because they can't stand the idea of progress and Ellie being gay, from the people who don't care about it or like that idea. This scene is there to make some people close the game, people who Neil Druckman and the cast probably didn't want playing it anyway. So that's why the score is now going up. People who really finished after days of playing can now come and give their real opinion about it. Don't trust reviews from Friday or Saturday, those people didn't finish the game.

Now, I need to say that the story has some bad moments where you are going to get really angry and ask "why are you doing this game? WHY?". And for a moment I thought all the reviews were real. But wait a little, finish the game, in the end everything is going to be worth it. Ok, there are some moments that I really think they should have removed because they just make you feel frustrated, but overall, it's a brilliant game. Anyway, The story is a masterpiece, but you definitely need to finish to understand it. It made me cry 5 times.
People are only complaining about it because they didn't finish or they didn't understand the first game. This game teach us never to listen only to one side of the story, never to judge a person, anyone, if you don't know their story. Was joel a hero or a villain in the first game? You should really think about JOEL'S actions and its consequences in the first game if you want to understand Part 2 and why the story is what it is.
Is it as good as The Last of Us 1? Nop, nothing will be, but it's a masterpiece on its own and really deserves a 10. I'm just sad with all this score bombing situation, it's not a game which deserves it!

Of course the story was not as good as the first game, but it was never going to be. I enjoyed playing as Abby, and while they tried to make you feel bad for some of the members of the WLF I only sympathized with one. That was Owen, I think he was genuinely a good guy. He's really the only one that didn't want to kill Ellie after they kill Joel. While the story was a somewhat basic revenge tale, that did not stop me from immensely enjoying it. The part where you play as Abby and go to rescue Lev from the island is the most visually pleasing part of the game to me. You are then concluded with the hero and evil villain parting ways and more or less hugging it out making the entire story pointless for the sake of making you think about an extremely uninteresting moral dilemma that was not wanted and does not work. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have played the game and replayed it a second timer and I really am enjoying everything about it and I don’t understand the hate revolving around this game. The story makes you feel what the writers were aiming for and just because Joel dies in the beginning doesn’t mean the game deserves such a bad rating. People say the way Joel does is dry and he acts stupid but there is a reason for that. Joel is in the comfort of Jackson and there isn’t much danger going on there for years already therefore maybe he has gotten a bit less tough. Back then he had to always be aware of the dangers because he was always under the threat of death and for years that has stopped for him in Jackson. And his death was dry and so are other deaths because sometimes in real life that’s what happens. People get shot or killed almost instantly and out of nowhere all the time and it’s almost never a slow death where they get to say something to their loved ones or whatever you guys were hoping for. So stop hating on the game if you have not played it and just saw leaks or someone else hating it. Have your own opinion and experience this masterpiece yourself. Expand

    More than questionable design decisions:

As many players I wholeheartedly detest Abby and do not feel any sympathy for her. The game forcing you to play as her for about 10 hours and having to beat up Ellie, is an absolute no-go for me.

The only highlights of the game are the occassional flashbacks featuring Joel and Ellie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. felt like i did everything for nothing and then the parts i hated the most is when transitioned to Abby, started feeling like she was the main character when you have to go and fight Ellie i really wanted to enjoy this game and i do graphic, audio, immersion, and mechanic wise. but i really didn't like Abby and being forced to play as her for around 10 hours was just not a good move the story was kind of all over the place i can happily say that the flashbacks with Joel were my favorite parts of the game. just wish we had more Joel and Ellie time but he was killed right off the bat. i don't see nothing wrong with Ellie being in a gay couple i actually was very happy for her i bring this up because i see a lot of people saying the bad reviews are because of the lesbian couple but no its not. letting Abby just get away was really disappointing at this point in the game i just wanted to kill her and get over it but instead Ellie lets her go, Ellie suffered nothing but losses in this game first she loses Joel then she loses Jesse almost loses Tommy loses to Abby in the first fight which you are forced to play as Abby, and at the end you lose two fingers too Abby and let her go it wouldn't be good or satisfying either because you faught her when she was really weak but that doesn't happen

instead you basically chase after her through Seattle then get beat you leave home you end up chasing her again and you find her hanged up just waiting to die which would've happened if Ellie never went after her again Abby would've died with lev but nope Ellie follows her tracks all the there to cut her down almost kill her and then just let her go, she left her newborn baby and girlfriend behind to go save the main person who killed Joel just a waste of time and a whole bunch of buildup making you believe you would kill her but then you just free her and let her go.

Then you return home and Dina is gone and now you cant play guitar. The trailers were really misinforming i don't mean it as in trailers should tell you the story but as in the first trailer she says she will kill every last one of them but in the game every one dies except for the one who fully tortured and killed Joel right in front of her face i just don't really get it came in with really high expectations because of how good the first game was and ended feeling confused just a whole lot of mixed feelings i really hope they learn from this and improve the next game if there even is going to be one. i give it a 4 out of 10 because of the simple fact that the graphics were amazing and the mechanics were really good and easy to learn. EDIT: I've changed my rating to 8 out of 10 for the fact that they at least tried something new it might've not worked but they tried it.

Wonder why professional reviews are so glowing? It's because Sony is literally not allowing them to base their review past the first few chapters of the game. It's because Sony is literally not allowing them to base their review past the first few chapters of the game. Combine that with access media afraid to lose their early access to review copies and real world politics being inserted into freakin video games of all things (and reviewers basing their review in agreement with said politics instead of the game itself), and you have this scenario.

What the reviewers won't tell you:

All the little moments the original game featured, the unique gameplay sessions that spiced up what is arguably pretty vanilla gameplay before amazing story segments, is gone. Couple this with the fact the story is an absolute shadow of its former self, and what you get is a very long drawn out and boring game with little to break up the monotony. With the story ruining characters by not at all portraying them the way they 'should' act based on the first game and the rules it set (the story showing you how individual characters act and think, now not matching to how they act and think in this game), there's little to make you get through the sludge of the same gameplay to get to the end of the game. No longer is the story a treat you are excited to get to. Now you nearly fear it, as the game seems to get worse in its story as the game goes on.

There's a reason why the reviews didn't allow for any discussion on the last 12 hours of the game, and it had nothing to do with 'spoilers'. It was because the game in story, character development, and gameplay falls apart in the last 12 hours to the point where you'll literally exclaim "what the f***" multiple times. This is not just an opinion of liking the story vs not. The story is not anything to be proud of even if you share the views of the creator. It's literally just a revenge plot.

The irony is the game creator silencing people even discussing the game (even without spoilers!). He's essentially making a game that says revenge only brings you pain, all while he's taking revenge on people discussing his game in anything other than the brightest light, all while complaining people are upset at being silenced.....pretending he's the victim. It's literally the revenge plot endless circle his OWN GAME warns about.

Sony is also at fault here. Sony will censor Japanese games for showing a side boob or simply being too "sexual" (if a butt cheek is shown in Devil May Cry, it'll be hidden by a solar flair!). But in this game, there is a girl who's literally raped... right there... in front of the camera... in a very brutal way... no censorship.

I'd like there to be a standard here from Naughty Dog and Sony. Censor all games, or censor none. Don't censor people's opinions and accept critique, or censor it all but stop playing the victim and admit you don't want your art being critiqued.

Being hypocritical and only acting in your favor, ie: always against what the customer wants, will get you an even harsher critique than you would have gotten had you just presented what the game was honestly from the start. The game is a pale immitation of what made Part 1 so great. It would have been scored poorly by users regardless of this controversy. But the controversy will only make people's feelings towards the game more sour, and affect the score even more. This huge difference between professional and user scores should show the masses the divide between the common person and the elites we've experiencing for ages. The only difference now is, they don't think they have to hide it. Vote with your wallets.

Gameplay - 10. They absouloutly invented the stealth from scratch, the way you can hide in bushes, or prone and it adds alot to the arsenal of ways to kill slaughter and more haha... Ala
Also there are many survival branches that you can upgrade and those choices can really suit to your playstyle or maybs even make you change it. There are Also many adaptations to the difficulty of the game and its not only about moderate or hard so its really nice because that way you are never bored there is always a challange.

And all the time is feel amusement by my actions. Without any spoilers I once rage quit the game because of a character I really hate. And its not about to say the story is bad and I dont want to play.,its about saying I really connected. The story is made up real good. It starts slow and it is not flashy and the and maybe if you will told the spoilers you will say its lame, but it is well written and slowly but steady makes you connected to it, it fun to playtrough it and discover more. to be honest I dont remember anybody said on god of war that its a lame story altough the main objective is to put the ashes of kratos wife in in the mountain.,because it was fun, it was exciting and yet suprising. The last of us is the same and I think that even better. Just come open minded about this game, dont give a **** about others opinion. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have finished the game, but I feel such a crushing sadness after finishing it. I think I understand the intent of the developers, but don't think it made for an enjoyable experience. The first game, though desolate, was a beautiful mix of sadness/joy/excitement and ended with me feeling hope. In general, I felt good while playing Part I, and I ended the game feeling good as well.

With Part II, I felt miserable playing as Abbby. I think the intent was for us to bond with her and sympathize with her, but despite the attempts, I just couldn't. I understand what Joel did in the first game, and don't think Abby was entitled to her revenge at all. I get her tribulations, but her Dad was kinda crazed and I don't feel warm towards Abby and her character arc.

The violence was also way too much! Perhaps that was the intent? But had I known that, I wouldn't have played it. I feel as though this game was the equivalent to a situation where Voldemort wins at the end of Harry Potter, and then Hogwarts is burned and the Death Eaters win. I would not have wanted to read a story where that version of events played out! Similarly, I was so horrified I had to play as Abby, and beating up Ellie made me want to turn the games off and watch the ending summarized on youtube because I would have needed closure and to know how it ends. Good for the developers for doing what they felt was the right creative intent. This game made me feel bad, and I feel worse off for having played it.

Some good though, because I think it's important these reviews are balanced. Graphics were amazing, and I DID like the gameplay. Just the story and characters I hated...This is why the ultimate score is 4. I think 0 scores are stupid and too emotional. But I would not recommend this game, and I would not have purchased it had I known how things were gonna play out.

I´m gonna shortly address the graphics, gameplay, music, sound and fun factor, those are an absolutely 10, the game is fun, graphically it´s the top for the PS4, considering how old it is, the actors do their fantastic job, and the music is exceptional as always. Story wise, it´s something completely different from what I expected as first, and personally, the story got me driven.
Yeah, the story is dark, very dark, they show us a human tale, full of flawed and crooked humans in despair in a world turn into **** ND tells us that there are no Hollywood tropes, nor a good versus evil plot, and shows us that humans are full of shades.
This story absolutely picks up where the first one left, and continues to its ultimate consequences, wither we like it or not, the events told in this game are very true representation of people´s strugges in a post apocalyptic world.

Never before have I seen such an authentic commentary on hate. This have will make you be implicit in the self destruction of a character you love and the redemption of a character you hate. I commend Naughty Dog for not playing it safe when they could have focused on the more cathartic elements of hate. Instead we got something powerful and something important. Quality improvements over its predecessor, stunning visuals, and a gripping story that has left many people divided. This game is absolutely the story the game developers wanted us to experience and they were fine with the consequences that came along with that, no amount of whining consumers could change that. Terrible. Rubbish history, new boring characters and forced ideology. Congratulations to those involved.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
