Yes, the game is depressing and in many ways horrible (the story, not the game), but it is also really really good! Is the gameplay perfect? No. Is the story perfect? No. But it is still so, so good! I hate what happened in the beginning of the game, and I wanted Ellie to find and kill Abby. But then you play as Abby, and oh my gosh! I kinda ended up loving her! Not what she did, but her, as a character. And sweet little Ellie! I feel for her and my heart kept breaking for her as the story went on. This game suprised me in many ways, and had me in tears many others. Seriously! Play it, and try to stop being offended that Joel died. This game does not deserve zeroes. There have been games I personally don't like that I can still appreciate for the game it is. And this one is gritty and dark and depressing, but also beautiful in a dark way and wonderful and heartbreaking and deserving of love. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game is pretty great. It does have its story issues but overall it's a great piece of work. I guess they could have done the major twist in a slightly different way, maybe reshuffle the order of play from Ellie to Abby. That said I actually loved the Abby part. Ngl originally I wasnt a fan since it felt like I was forcibly pushed out of Ellie's story, but the more I played with Abby the more I liked her. It wasnt even about me 'forgiving' her for killing Joel, she was quite a well-rounded character.
The end is quite dark and leaves this stale feeling knowing that Ellie, who we have rooted for since the first game, does not get a happy ending but thats the good part about this game, it's quite realistic in that sense.
My only big criticism is why on earth has no one realised that killing Ellie in the first game would have been such a stupid idea and would have most likely destroyed any potential for a vaccine???

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A story of ups and downs

    POSITIVE :

    Gameplay
Faithful to the first game with attention to detail and a few nice new features.
Small point of criticism > environmental puzzles and unlocking safes become cumbersome after a while

    Voice acting
    TOP notch
Actors know what they're doing and it's seamlessly synched with their motions (due to motion acting)

    Sounds & soundtrack
Beautiful, would've liked to hear more background music to support the mood.

    Graphics
One of the best-looking titles with stable framerate on PS4. Not a lot of bugs/glitches.

    MIXED FEELINGS:

    Storyline
It's not horrible, there are great and memorable moments to be found but overall, I feel let down. If I think too much on it, immersion = lost.

For me personally a story of revenge requires either fulfillment or redemption (forgive w/o regret).
There's none to be found here.

    Character assassination in cutscenes.
See a door? Let's go/burst right through it. While you as a player are either very careful (stealthy) or go in guns blazing with excellent marksmanship / next to unlimited health, in cutscenes the story takes control for the sake of plot and screws characters over. Not how I expect seasoned survivors/scouts to act in real life (and also how they did in the first part). Sorry, but this comes over as lazy writing really ...

Overtly use of flashbacks and character switches.
I get it, you want to show 2 sides of the story and help understand how these characters feel. Just don't exaggerate, it slows down the pace immensely and some storylines feel unneccessary.

    Strange take on pregnancy.
A woman who's pregnant for +6 months can parkour like a champ.
A woman who's pregnant for x weeks becomes jaded all of a sudden and can't move.
I don't get it, who thought this is close to true life and even respectful to women?

The hunt for Joel that isn't.
Abby by chance encounters Joel. He saves her.
First of all, what are the odds, lady Luck must be smiling on our new prota-/antagonist.
Second, there's no after-thought to the rescue, no duality in vengeance which would be the humane reaction.

Overall I'd rate it 6.5, a lot of work went in the development and really, it does show.
But the main story ... written for the sake of a mundane plot.

Finally, 3 lessons I take away from this adventure :
(and the protagonists should've done in the first place)

    1. if you're a renowned killer and you're outnumbered by strangers never tell them your real name

    2. if you see your dad point-blank being worked on with a golfclub, shoot first, ask questions later 3. the doors make for nice songs but are lethally hazardous, enter with care To Naughty Dog I say, when you write a storyboard, PROOF-READ it and check what works, what does not. Do NOT censor genuine points of criticism. Learn from mistakes and grow as a writer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly didn't want to have to write this review, but after how much I loved The Last of Us and hated the sequel, I figure I need to verbalize what's actually wrong with the game.

Now, gameplay and graphics are great, bu the reason I'm not giving this game any points is because it's a story-focused game. You don't get points for sound and visuals if the overall experience is horrendous.

First off, there seems to be this idea going around that people hate this game because of the lesbian relationship and depiction of transgendered individuals. Personally, I haven't played a ton of games with LGBT characters, but one outstanding game that comes to mind is VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action. In this game you take the role of a bartender named Jill in a cybernetic dystopian-like future. You learn about the world through the characters you serve, and their stories shape your understanding of this world the story takes place in.

It's a narrative-driven game, just like TLOUP2, and has an array of different genders and sexualities. The inclusion of LGBT in this game doesn't take away from the story, but rather is a part of it, without pandering or trying to point out how "woke" the developers are.

In TLOUP2, men are bad. Joel is a "stupid old man" as Abby describes him, before bashing him to death with a golf club. A man gives Ellie some steak sandwiches and she gives them away calling them "bigot sandwiches". Throughout the story their are interactions that leave you feeling as though the game is going out of it's way to paint men as bad people. If that's how someone feels, great. But if the only way you can build up women and feminism is by bashing men then that's pretty shallow and weak story-telling. That doesn't even touch on the unnecessarily long segments of over the top romance scenes with Ellie and Dina. It's like the developers were pointing a flashing sign saying "look how progressive we are at Naughty Dog!" As I said, nothing wrong with LGBT relationships, but when you go over the top with the romance it makes it seem pandering and shallow, less like you want inclusion and more like you want to make yourselves seem woke.

One of the biggest criticisms I have is how out of character the main characters seem to act. Joel and Tommy trusting strangers and giving their real names when they've just met makes absolutely zero sense. If you don't believe me, go play the Last of Us part 1 again. Or just watch some cut-scenes. Joel is incredibly cautious around new people, a trait he passed on to Ellie by the end of the first game, and it's almost like this game was made by a whole different team than the ones who made the first game. It's insane.

And lastly, the overall narrative. Now, at this point if you've played the game it's pretty obvious this story has an overall message about revenge, and essentially how revenge is bad and ends up becoming a never-ending cycle. It's a pretty basic theme we've seen in many stories before. But generally speaking, the way it works is that if the audience genuinely feels as though letting the antagonist live and ending the cycle of revenge is justified. That the audience feels a genuine connection with the antagonist, and that the protagonist has had enough of an experience that has changed their perspective about getting revenge.

Well, that doesn't happen here. Abby continues to be unlikable throughout this game, and playing with her for about 10 hours (which the game forces you to do) you don't feel like you've come to understand or appreciate her character more. And if anything, I think that's more the fault of the writers at Naughty Dog than it is with the player. The game never explicitly answers a very simple question: why should I care about Abby when she murdered Joel? It attempts to "humanize" her by making you play from her perspective, but again, never answers the question outright. And at the end of the game, right when you as the player feel as though Joel will be avenged, Ellie decides against it. After killing so many other people who were involved in his death, she spares the one person who deserves to die more than any of the others. It leaves the player feeling less like they experienced a videogame and more like they left a terribly written movie.

In short, I think the worst thing about this game is although I can get my money back, I can't get my time back that I wasted on this abysmal, horribly written "gaming" experience. 0/10. Honestly play something else.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is an absolutely gorgeous piece of art that is so polarizing. It’s amazing the immediate knee jerk reaction this game has gotten. I went into the game spoiler free, but I figured Joel was going to die at some point. And boy did he die. It was horrible and I hated Abby so much throughout the first half of the game. I couldn’t understand why she did what she did and couldn’t believe that ND was trying to justify her story. When I finally got to the Abby v Ellie encounter after Ellie’s Seattle day 3, I was livid that I had to play as abby. I kept on killing her over and over again, saying “good, you deserve this.” But then the story began to unfold. Abby was just a little girl when all of her friends (besides a select few) were murdered before her by Joel, including her dad. Not only that, but Joel completely and selfishly took away the worlds only hope for a vaccine. Still, I was mad at Abby. But then you begin to learn more about her friends and why they are there. You start to feel empathy, which so many people on this site cannot wrap their head around. Abby didn’t want to kill everyone, she wanted justice and she got it. She spares Ellie’s life twice. Ellie, however, is so purely blinded by a need for revenge, very similar to Joel when his daughter died. Abby also gets to that point when she’s about to kill Dina, but chooses a different path because Lev (like Ellie in the first game) is her anchor to reality. She shows mercy and breaks that cycle. Fast forward to the final encounter, and you’ve finally gotten your chance to finish Abby. But then something hits Ellie, that none of this will bring back Joel and she’s falling into this same pattern he feel into years before. She chooses for the first time to see clearly and show mercy, not only for Abby but for Lev as well. It is an unbelievably good story.

Gameplay wise, there are so many improvements to the first game. Cover systems, AI, attack patterns, and ways to go about completely an area are heavily varied. I played on survivor and some of the parts were crushing to figure out. Zombies can get released on bad people, I could go on and on. It’s so much fun

Graphics, Sound, and locations speak for themselves, they are unbelievable. I felt like I was actually on top of a skyscraper or in SB while playing. My only gripe is that I feel some of the minor characters on ellie’s side could’ve been expanded on, especially Jesse and Dina. And that some of the plot is shock value. But that absolutely does not take away from this work of art.

I truly believe this game deserves GOTY and would be extremely surprised if it didn’t win it after initial sales we are seeing. Anyone rating this game 0-4 is a basement dweller who can’t emphasize with different points of view and try to walk through why characters do bad things. This game will hurt you, but that’s the point. It is a harsh reality about a post apocalyptic world.

Really? Neil Druckmann ruined this franchise. The storyline is trash. He killed one of the most loved characters to justify his poorly made storyline. If the story sparked some emotions, whether it be anger, happiness, sadness, or frustration, then it is valid. Seek to understand the weight of the characters decisions and don’t be so single minded. I know everyone is important and every lives matters because of the self-interest but it is not a excuse to make a main character dead in the sudden way to serve the idea of the cost of the revenge cycle. People usually plays games for escaping reality to gain something that they can never have in real life, for example happiness and joy, but not frustration or confuse. I don't need to be told that revenge is bad or eye for an eye makes the whole world blinds. I think the reason most of the player bought this game is seeing the character development after the last game. And yet they wrote Joel to be dead to show there are two sides of a coins(events). The game play and visual didn't save the game from the fall of expectation. Misleading trailer is a sin of the Naughty Dogs Company. I have to say it was a reality shock when I played the game, naughty dog really made me realize that not everything is a fairy tale where there is a hero who does everything right and saves the world in the end, she really did a good job demonstrating how cruel the world can be, I always waited for a different ending with joel and ellie together, but that wasn’t it, that made the game more real, the real reason ellie didn’t kill abby wasn’t because of a moral lesson but because she realized that revenge only generates more revenge. the gameplay is almost the same as 1 but improved in everything

Even though the game was incredible there were some bad points like: * artificial intelligence, honestly naughty dog promised something revolutionary but ended up making the intelligence end up being a little laggy * the game makes my ps4 look like an airplane turbine, if you don't have a ps4 pro, know that the game suffers from some bugs like flashing textures and framerate drop * They focused a lot on humans, it really is not a big problem since the gameplay is good and brings incredible moments but the game forgot that they are in an apocalypse with a lot of infected * Items are not scarce, they promised more immersion in the game but it helps you at all times, when I played I always had a full inventory because I thought so many * The difficulty, both ellie and abby are super sodiers, they can take 50 shots and still stay alive, that takes away some of the realism even though the game had some errors it was a good game, maybe not the best of the year but one of the best

As far as I can tell, all the negative reviews stem from fans who do not like where the story leads them. This has nothing to do with bad writing - on the contrary, I find it excellent (as with most ND games). The characters actions and motivations add up and everything progresses at a satisfactory pace. As for the (controversial) story, it fits into the TLOU universe. The elements of the story are not black and white as in good vs. evil. And the story doesn't have a Hollywood type, boring and overused ending. Its very unique and memorable, similar to the first title. It's exactly what I was expecting of TLOU2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright, I decided to break my review down in regards as to why I scored this game an 8/10.
To get this out of the way: The unnecessary amount of hate towards the LGBTQ+ representation. Yes, it is in this game, and it is not in any way shoved in your face more than straight counterparts. Trust me, it isn't. A game shouldn't be labeled 'political' because it has two human's in love or because it has a character that's in the wrong body. If you're a grown adult throwing a fit over this: Set the controller down and go educate yourself. Go ask that spoiled liberal niece/nephew or cousin of yours to help you out.
With that out of the way, let me go over the graphics and sounds: Beautiful. Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful, I was blown away by them. There's a specific scene late in the game that made me cry from how it looked.
And the sounds of clickers and other monsters through this game were utterly terrifying. There were moments where I wouldn't notice something until a noise came my way and suddenly I was on my toes trying to track it.
The soundtrack itself is also excellently made, very spooky and haunting, a perfect fit for the tone of this game.
On to the reason why most people hate this game: His death. When the events unfolded, I began crying and didn't stop. For context, I played this game in my freshman year of high school and now completed it at the end of my freshmen year of college. I have grown with these characters and have done at least one play through every year since.
The death of such an influential character hurt my heart, but what people have to remember: He was not a good person. He was barely a good person in Ellie's eyes. He essentially dismantled the only group that brought hope to the world. Watching the way he died was so god awful and could have been done more tastefully, for sure. But the way people tore the game makers apart for this was sort of ridiculous. Have you never seen a main character die before, in any media? These people are in the apocalypse. The people that dealt the final blow were standing in front of the reason the apocalypse continued to happen. I'd be pretty pissed off too.
Now, I understand the hate for Abby completely. She killed the main character. She devastated millions of people. I hated her when I began playing Ellie's story. And then we're forced to play her. And then I understood. Please, don't let those leaks be the only thing that effects how you view a character. I managed to steer clear of most of them, but after playing her character she grew on me and now I'm hopeful for the next chapter of this game being dedicated to her. Controversial? Yes. But damn, if she isn't powerful and such a strong character both emotionally and physically. I loved her.
Ellie's story was also just as powerful and heartbreaking. I cried a lot playing her. Can you tell I'm emotional? She had a very broken and heart wrenching story this time around and at times I had to set the controller down to process what I had just played through. It finally shed light on the pain people hold when placed in these situations.
As for the ending: I really understand why people hate it. I'm not a huge fan of it either. When I entered a certain part I thought the story was wrapping up, but instead it rushed through it. The worst part of the ending for me was when we're forced to fight Abby. Like I said, I enjoyed her story and loved her as a character but even then, it was so painful watching Ellie scream and release all of her emotions as she sliced her up. It was difficult to play, and in no way fun. That seems to be the issue for me: The game makers wanted people to (maybe?) grow attached to Abby and surely not tons of people did, but if that was their goal, why would we have to entire a 5 minute long sequence beating the **** out of her in front of her only reason to live? Awful. They missed the mark on that.
And then obviously the story wraps up on a very open note for Ellie, which makes me unsure if her story is truly over.
My guess? The next game will be about Ellie tracking a doctor down to finally access the cure and Abby will have to escort her or some **** because history repeats itself. But thats for another discussion.
All in all, I recommend this game.

Story = Pointless. Beloved characters are killed in an unreasonable, unnecessary manner with no real justification. Character development is either retconned or non-existent. Gender Politics shoved in your face, which would be fine if it enhanced the story, but it doesn't. Everything that made the first game great has been surgically removed and replaced with stale dialogue, unlikable characters, forced relationships with no buildup or backstory and just generally an exasperated sigh of bad writing.

I should make my opinion very clear, after the first hour or so of the game, I could see where the storyline was going and I had no desire or motivation to continue playing. I only finished the game out of love for the first one and respect to the people that worked hard on it. I can't believe i waited 7 years for this. Do NOT believe what you see in the trailers. Naughty Dog lied and used familiar characters for the trailer to maintain the secrecy and "Spoiler-Free" nature of the games actual story. Which is tasteless and unwarranted.

If you loved the first game, do NOT play this one. You will see your favourite characters destroyed for the sake of a gender political agenda that does not fit in The Last of Us. I wish I hadn't played this game.

The story itself essentially prevents that experience from happening, Ellie's characterisation is gloom and depressing and very rarely is there any ability to have a fun experience or a humorous one. I feel the first game really captivated the audience because of the humour and the dynamics and the character developments. This game simply has none of that, it's all stripped away to leave you playing something that is violent and seeking to place your sense of morality under a microscope. I ask myself why? Considering I'm playing a game that is in an apocalyptic world where morality really has no place. Violence in itself is used as survival I dont understand why the writer has to make it more than that. The decision to make the plot more diverse I feel is good. However I think it's poorly written and in doing so stands at the forefront of the plot instead of taking a symbolic place in the background leaving the audience to reflect about later and develop their own opinions on those characters representing strong muscly women ,trans people and homosexuality. I just feel if you put social justice at the foreground of the plot to distract from how terrible of a story the game actually has, it really does do a disservice for the minorities represented and the message they want to express. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "No matter what, you keep finding something to fight for" We leave the first part of The Last of Us with that quote, and this masterpiece of a sequel just builds upon that but in a more complex way, and from different perspectives that could have been a hard pill to swallow for some.

In the beginning of part 2, we get to see our beloved characters living a somewhat normal life, with newfound companions and stories that will slowly unfold as the game progresses through meaningful flashbacks. This was a glimpse into the last four years of their lives, a relatively peaceful life that Joel and Ellie have found for themselves. We as the player, step into the story as all of that is about to fall apart. The game does an amazing job of making us feel what the characters are feeling. Sadness, rage, anger, a thirst for revenge. We feel a sense of betrayal as we watch our protagonist get his life beaten out of him, by someone we were playing as just mere minutes ago. We watch him breathe his last breath, through Ellie's eyes, which made it all the more painful and near unbearable to watch. Ellie looks around the room of Joel's killers, we do too. We embark on our journey ready to kill every last one of them.

The story starts off linear, seemingly a revenge story set in this dystopian world we all know and love. We are accompanied by Dina, a level-headed character who deeply cares for and loves Ellie, and who is equally as capable when it comes to combat. The pair get to explore new destinations that are beyond beautiful, despite the destruction the outbreak has caused. The set pieces and locations are a sight to behold, and Naughty Dog has done such an amazing job of making it feel like we are exploring an open world, even though it isn't one. The sets are designed to make you want to explore every corner and every room in order to not miss a single collectible or dialogue that might be a great addition to the narrative. We fight bigger, badder infected that are more rewarding to defeat, and factions that feel more human than AI, and therefore harder to kill than those in the previous installment of the Last of Us. And with every build-up of tense encounters, we are rewarded with the most beautiful, somewhat poignant storytelling of Joel and Ellie's relationship that would almost guarantee some tears to be shed.

As we continue on with our gameplay, it is not until the halfway mark that we realize that this is in fact not a linear story line nor a revenge story—when we once again get to play as Abby. At first we're conflicted. Why am I playing as Joel's cold-hearted killer? How long does this have to go for? What happens in the theater confrontation? I don't want this! Take me back to Ellie! The anger we felt during the prologue rises back up again. I admit, I let her get destroyed by clickers numerous times just to satisfy my anger and frustration. But after a shameful amount of suicide attempts as Abby, I trudged on, eager to find out what kind of story is about to unfold. And boy was I pleasantly surprised.

We get to know the stories behind our prologue "killers", albeit short for some of them, Naughty Dog still manages to give us a glimpse of who these characters are through superb acting and dialogue. I was particularly fond of Manny, who I very much despised during the prologue. I found myself in shock when he gets shot in the head, by Tommy nonetheless, through an epic run-and-duck encounter that's arguably one of the most mind-blowing parts of the game.

As the journey progresses on Abby's side of the story, I found myself fighting the urge to root for her until I finally surrendered. I loved her story arc. I loved her. I loved Lev. I was witnessing the beginning of an amazing companionship, reminiscent to what we experienced with Joel and Ellie during the first part of the Last of Us, without it feeling repetitive. I was in awe, not just with the story but with what it made me feel simply by giving me a new perspective. It was phenomenal.

On the two encounters where the two protagonists get to fight each other, I struggled to let the fight go on. The game makes you feel the consequences of their actions by letting you participate in their combat, it was soul-crushing, and it was intended to be that way. That's what makes this game a solid masterpiece.

The final flashback is the most emotional one yet. Much like the rest of the game, it is all in the details with this final scene. From the crack in Ellie's voice as she says "but I would like to try" and Joel visibly holding back tears, to the emotional and physical distance between these two characters as they talked. It was our beloved Joel and Ellie in their most vulnerable, with a dialogue that perfectly concluded the first game's ending. It was painful yet beautiful, subtle yet impactful. A bittersweet conclusion to an exceptional story, and I expected no less from the Last of Us.

Easily one of the best games ever made. Any of the haters on here are sheep who wanted a spoon fed more of the same story from the first. This game is a emotional rollercoaster that will make you play characters you hate and see their side of the story. Gameplay is the best you can get in an survival horror game.

Those people must haven't finished the game or completely missed the point of the game, it's about beliefs, perception of good and evil, love, grief, forgiveness and humanity. Every character feels so real, you have to pay attention to characters chit-chatting and notes to fully appreciate the characters development and their motivations. The environment is large, you have many ways to approach enemies. So you would not be bore.. Also, goodboyes Expand

My only problem with the game is that it feels like it drags on a bit long at some points.

But other than that the game was fantastic. Most of the new characters were great, the gameplay is intense and brutal, and the story was definitely on par with the first, and was even more creative than the first.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazon wouldn't let me review this, so I created an account here. Forget all the negative reviews about agendas, this game has WAY more problems going on to justify its terrible review scores.

The positives are that it is a beautiful game and the level-designs are top-notch. Gameplay is essentially the same as the first game, so take that as you will.

The negatives? Where to begin? The story structure is a complete mess. Flashbacks are leaned on heavily and add little depth to the story. In fact, the flashbacks are so out of place - characters killed earlier in the game get hours of meaningless flashbacks when you know they are already dead - that they become a chore to play though. It's almost as if the writers saw LOST and thought they could mimic the format but completely missed the point of the flashbacks informing the present character development.

Even worse is the treatment of the characters from the first game (arguably the best part of TLOU). The developers go out of their way to make the player dislike Joel and Ellie and spend 10-15 hours trying to make you like their new character Abby. it just doesn't work and they know it. If this new character was the main character in a new game, they would be just as bland and uninteresting.

These poor story choices devolve into ridiculous character decisions just to move the plot to the next set piece but make no sense given the context of a post-apocalyptic world. Then you have the message of "Revenge is BAD" while the game wallows in gory violent kills. Top it off with the cliche ending of letting the main focus of the revenge go free after killing hundreds of other people and the absolute mess is complete.

Gameplay is repetitive and becomes a chore; Hope you liked your first stealth kill animation because you'll be seeing it play out a hundred times exactly the same until the very end of the game. Likewise, you'll have to be pretty unaware to notice that the NPC enemies - despite claims of realism - are duplicated over and over to the point where you'll start wondering if you are fighting a clone army. Ridiculous scarcity of items - NPCs will shoot hundreds of rounds at you but suddenly their dead bodies have no ammo once you kill them - just makes the game drag on and on when a full clip would save the player hours.

In the end, the only feeling a player will really have is wondering why they spent 25-30 hours on a game that really concludes with no sense of accomplishment and characters that aren't worth the time spent.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
