The gameplay is the same as the first game which was made 7 years ago. The story is odd and seems out of order. Character interaction is bad and dialogue is long and boring. The best part of this game is the art and music even if it makes your ps4 sound like a jet engine.

The game has bombed for players and viewers, but the story is an offense to the first game.Joel would never fall in abby's trap, we learned this from the first tlou. I was just playing the game for the sake of completing it with no emotional connect to the story . I was made to play as a character that I didn’t like. This is a very smart, complicated game, and a lot can be missed by the impatient. It certainly isn't a clone of the first game by any stretch and that can be polarizing, but it certainly completes the first game in a very beautiful way. It at times can be sickly unsatisfying, but that's not something you give bad reviews for, this is on purpose. It at times can be sickly unsatisfying, but that's not something you give bad reviews for, this is on purpose. It's definitely a tragedy and that just doesn't sit with some people. Definitely worth binging if you're not working with the best memory as a side note, because apparently the plot got confused for some, and as someone who finished this in 2 nights I didn't have that problem at all. The hate seemingly comes from the anti-sjw crowd and is completely unwarranted. The majority of the criticism came before the game was even released long enough to finish it so it can be mostly chalked up to review bombing. Well, that and the leaks were extremely accurate so people knew how the game was going to go EARLY. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have played bad games before, but I've never played a game that left me so insulted and disgusted before.

Like what most people have said, the graphics are beautiful, as is the sound design and the level layouts.
But that can't save this game.

The characters are unlikeable, not to mention any character from the previous games are GROSSLY out of character to shoehorn in certain plot points or lessons that make no sense in the first place.
I never once felt any sympathy for Abby after she killed Joel.
That death was not dignified in the slightest.
If you are going to kill off one of the most beloved characters in all gaming, you damn well better do it right, and not only did they fail on every level to achieve that, they instead killed him in the most disgusting, out of character, despicable way I've ever seen in a game.
As if that wasn't the end of it, they then FORCE YOU to play as his killer for almost half of the entirety of the game.
These scenes are supposed to garner her sympathy to show her background.
The ONLY reason I finished this game was to kill her, and in the end, the game doesn't even let you do that.

tldr; They killed Joel in the worst way possible, in a way that made no sense for the character, had a character literally SPIT on his dead body, then force you to play as his killer, and in the end you don't even get to kill her.

The makers of this game should be ashamed.

    R.i.p Joel, you deserved better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

The beauty of this game is that it forces you to look at things from a new perspective, and many people don't like to look beyond their bubble of comfort. The world of The Last Of Us Part II (and the real world) is not black and white... it is grey. Everybody is flawed, and everyone thinks they have good intentions. The characters you love are not necessarily good, the characters you hate are not necessarily bad. It's hard to get too in-depth without spoiling anything, but it's one of the most challenging, eye-opening and unforgettable experiences I've ever had in a video game. I'd strongly urge people play the game for themselves before casting any judgement. 10/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This may be the biggest disaster in history when it comes to writing in a video game. This is not just a betrayal of the characters, story, and audience that loved and supported the original, but the developers who were exploited and put through the wringer for the twisted desires and agenda of a selfish individual.

I implore those who are interested in this game to save your money, and better yet, your time and affection for the characters of the original. Anything a fan could come up with in their own head would be a better outcome than what you would be putting yourself through with this shoddy, amateurish slap in the face.

Pass on it, grab something in the meantime, or wait for reviews on Ghost of Tsushima perhaps, and grab that instead. You will be glad you saved yourself not only the heartache, but will be sending a message with your wallet that this treatment of fans and developers is unacceptable.

In spite of the bad end, I like the way how Abby killed Joel. But the thing what bothered me the most is the fact that the game forces you to play with Abby for more of 10 hours, at that point of the game I feel like I was playing a Dlc or something like that.
I understand that Naughty Dog want you to emphatize with Abby, but I think that they didn't it well.

First of all, I believe it is important to state that the graphics in this game is only what can be described as a technical marvel. The grass glows with a green hue simultaneously with the sun that casts a bleak shade of yellow onto Seattle and it helps bring this game to life. The music is also very emotional and I love the idea of Joel still being alive in the heart of Ellie through the medium of music. The gameplay of last of us 2 is nearly identical to its predecessor with a few new added additions like trail sniffing dogs, the ability to prone and jump, some new infected enemy types, and some boss battles that admittedly do feel lackluster but ultimately the majority of these additions were welcome. The real meat and potatoes of last of us 2 is its story as last of us is a story-driven game and this definitely where the review score drops dramatically. Joel's death purely exists out of coincidence which adds to the overall contrived and superficial feeling to the plot. Tommy and Joel find themselves in a room with the daughter of one of the surgeons operating on Ellie in the first game who Joel decided to kill. Tommy foolishly gives his and his brother names out to the strangers and even offers them to come back to the Jackson settlement for food and supplies. This is beyond out of character for both Joel and Tommy since they're both very uptight character due to the things they have seen and even in the first game they show a lot of examples of this but due to script convenience, the writers decided to find a basic and ridiculous way to kill Joel. We as gamers are not against the idea of killing a character loved by many but the execution here is not only disrespectful but very contrived and badly thought out as it's decided by coincidence and stupidity. The first half of the game we play as Ellie on a revenge quest to get to Abby in which we see Ellie mentally damaged by her actions and instantly shows a lot of regrets and even suffers from PTSD by the end of the game. In the 2nd half, we play as a new character named Abby who was the daughter of the surgeon mentioned prior. This game uses a lot of blatant manipulation tactics to make you sympathize with Abby. Ellie is forced to kill dogs in hard scripted segments wherein abbys section you are hard scripted to play with dogs twice as well as watch a cutscene in which a zebra is saved from barbed wire. Abby is also given the most innovative and interesting segments as well as the best weapons. This is so contrived, the game wants us gamers to like Abby so badly but if you can see through the writing intentions then the immersion is instantly broken and there are loads of incredibly confusing character decisions like how Mel is totally fine with going into battle being 8 months pregnant and how many times characters are let alone to live after a massive exchange despite them recognizing and establishing the consequences that those who were spared will come looking for them and a lot of the time their prediction was correct making their decision stupid. Joel kills Marlene to ensure that she doesn't come looking for them, this makes sense for his motivations and character. Abby is a cruel and unremorseful character that is so desperately made to look a hero through cheap manipulation tactics whilst incriminating Joel and Ellie who have both done terrible things but we can relate to their motivations as they make sense but this game tries everything to make you dislike these characters. The moral of last of us 2 is very basic: REVENGE IS BAD. It is hammered into your mind to the point the viewer faces emotional fatigue making the game not engaging which I feel wasn't the goal of this game. Last of us 2 is ambitious for the sake of it and doesn't justify its new attempt at storytelling. A film like no country for old men is a great example of subverting expectations but not for pretentious reasons but to fit the narrative that is being told, artsy and new styles are welcome but should be handled with great intelligence because when its dealt with laziness and less talented individuals. We find contrived plots with plot holes and what seems to be a great sense of manipulation. it is easy to write a shocking story that subverts expectations, but it's hard to write a good story with well thought out events and characters. A colossal disappointment of unimaginative story telling that attempts to explore the consequences of anger/revenge at the kindergarten intellectual level while using x-rated violence and gore. I’ve honestly never been more insulted by the in game narrative choices made on my behalf. There are humans on this planet that behave like the characters in this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game play itself was fine and there isn't much else I could think to make it groundbreaking since they added jumping and such into it. Technologically speaking, this game is a masterpiece and creates a lot of immersion with the graphics alone and its cool to see all the characters I grew up to love in such clear quality. I personally am all for the LGBTQ+ progressiveness in the game but I understand why people are saying there is an agenda being pushed and that this game is too political, the way I feel they see it is that all of the male leads were either killed or crippled and especially some we grew to love were killed in ways that were disrespectful to the character themselves or just didn't make sense for the character to even be in the situation in the first place. Also, reviewers are pointing out that people hate the game for that reason and because Ellie is lesbian but we already knew that from the Left Behind DLC as they explored her relationship with Riley. The story is the most important part of the game though and all the amazing graphics and such mean nothing to me if the story is just not good which happened to be the case here. The story proceeds to villianize Ellie through making here hell bent on getting revenge on Abby for killing Joel, while making Abby seem like the good guy by saving kids and playing with dogs E.T.C. and we are practically forced to sympathize with Abby and even maim her as we play Abby which is just uncomfortable to do since most people playing (include myself) hate Abby because of her introduction getting us off on the wrong foot. I understand that the story is supposed to be dark and I'm not angry that Joel is dead (I went into the game expecting it since he would be fairly old now), but his personality was different from the first game since was extremely Untrusting of people. During the into of the first game he even leaves a family with a child on the street when given the chance to save them, while Sara was alive and right when the outbreak started (Just so no one can blame it on her death and Jackson softening him up), but now he's giving his name to a group of 8 people he's never met (all with guns), enclosed in a locked room while they are all giving him stink eye. He is a completely different person making rookie mistakes that don't make sense for a character as seasoned in the apocalypse as him. The stories theme contradicts itself by trying to make Ellie consumed by revenge when Abby was just as consumed with revenge herself, yet the game wants us to hate Ellie and love Abby. The quote used with this game is "Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves." but honestly, you only need one at the end of the game because Ellie has lost absolutely everything for absolutely no reason since she doesn't even end up killing Abby for some flawed 2 second change in motivation. While Abby ends up walking away with Lev, implying that they have a relationship similar to the one of Joel and Ellie in the first game, which we know was something to look forward to. The message I perceive from the story is if you embark on a journey of revenge, just commit to it since Abby walked away with a lot more than Ellie did despite embarking on her on revenge story. Just wanted to get my frustrations out of the way since I loved the first game (and the DLC for it) a lot but was so disappointed to wait 7 years to see all of my favorite characters ruined so hopelessly and for no reason other than "Shock Value". I know that I'm contributing in skewing the rating this way, but I will gladly come back and change my rating to an 8/10 if review bombing is reversed

I understand the anger people feel towards multiple keymoments in the story. It's a truly unique game in the way the story is told and I don't think it's told in the best way possible. However I appreciate what they tried to accomplish. The problem is that I didn't always feel the way I knew they wanted me to feel.

To me this is a unique experience that made going through the game rough at times but I like to think of myself as en open-minded person and I've always wanted to play a game that featured a true anti-hero because I'm tired of all the games where you get to be the hero or villain. This is something else. You're neither the hero nor the villain. You're just going through the story of people in a world that's gone to sh*t. You may not agree with what happens in the story or you may not feel satisfied with the events in the story and I think this is where they tried to do a similar thing as they did in the first game in a different way and it just doesn't work the same way.

*spoiler warning for the first game*
At the end of the story Joel goes on a manic rampage instead or saving the human race and undoes everything you've been working towards the entire game and dooms the entire population by doing so. As a player you folow the story and have no say in the decision that Joel makes. Eventhough this rampage is completely immoral and unethical in every possible way, you understand where Joel is coming from because the entire game builds up to this moment and this is what makes the story of the first game so memorable.

This time they tried to switch it around and try something unique and this makes your mind conflict with your feelings. It's a true experience of morality in it's greyest forms and a critical look at the cycle of violence. It's an ambitous project and it might not be for everyone. If you just want to feel like a badass hero saving the world and mindlessly blow up people without having to deal with the consequences, you should probably skip this game and play something else. There are a lot of games out there that do not deal with the darker side of violence and war.

I can't help but feel like all games that tried this in the past have been criticized for pushing an agenda while also celebrating the violence they condemn. It might be very hypocritical for a game to do this, but by showing two sides of the coin you can actually nuance the celebration of violence and focus on the morality and meaning of it all. I think this games does exactly that and it might not always feel right or wrong, but I think that's part of the experience you'll have with this game.

We waited 7 years for this trash, and we are welcome with Joel getting killed off by the very **** **** he saved just moments earlier. Not only that, we are FORCED to play as this character and actually sympathize with her. God knows nobody wants nothing to do with no **** Abby and nobody **** cares about her backstory - not when she downright murdered Joel with a golf club right in front of Ellie. The ending is trash and antithetical. We get no closure. No respect for Joel, or the first game. The gameplay and graphics are half decent but its all for nothing when you've got a **** of a 'story' to 'play' for.

As far as gameplay goes, while it improved a bit over the first, I felt some of the sections of the game (specially day 1) could have been a bit shorter. The documents and everything else you find helps you deepen the story of people living between those 2 factions, but it will get a bit ehxausting with time.

All that remains is the big question: where will they go from there?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I will try to leave spoilers out about the first game and focus more on the second game, The Last of Us Part 2 is why you are reading this review anyways.

Remember the stong father like figure you played in the first game? Well now things are different. Did you think he would be very careful after having so much experience surving both hostile engagements from both human and infected? You thought wrong. Joel is killed very early on in the story, but for what purpose you may ask? Just to introduce a new character. Who the heck do they think they are? Who are they anyways? Here, let me answer that. They are the daughter of someone you killed. Let me narrow that down for you. Just the surgeon who was going to operate on Ellie in the first game. That person was the only npc players couldnt choose not to kill. You can stealth past entire sections in the game if you are good enough and it does allow you to have a bunch of ammo saved for the last level so it is worth it on higher difficulties. So the writers thought it would be a great idea to force a character in? Then they make us play as her? That is just insult to injury. They try to introduce a whole bunch of characters. It seems like a great idea, if they expanded on them and went deeper into their stories, but they dont do that. That turns out to be a waste of potential. So Ellie’s quest is to now seek revenge and go after the person that killed Joel. On this journey, she gets some new mechanics and some new tools, but deep down the gameplay feels and looks very similar to the first game. It is as if they brought in barely anything new. They did bring some new enemy types but that gets bland fast since their aren’t many new things you can do. The jump button is an overhyped thing, but going prone is pretty cool. As Ellie goes on her journey, she kills Abby’s friends and slowly gets closer as she tracks her down. Does she finally get her revenge? Well, here’s the message that Naughty Dog forces into their story. They want to push this idea that the circle of revenge is bad. Yes it is bad, but it also makes for bad story telling and a very unfun game. Aren’t video games supposed to be fun and enjoyable to an extent? Yes games should be challenging too, (I didnt find this version to be that difficult at all) but if the challenge gives the player reward and actual feeling of success and accomplishment, then it did its job. If it didnt, then why bother playing the game. In the end, Ellie does not carry out her revenge on Abby. She is blocked by a flashback of Joel and stops her from going through with it. Ellie goes back home to try and find herself. She cant find her friend Dina anymore. She lost several friends and Joel to Abby and her friends. She is alone in the world. At that point, Naughty Dog could have given players a chance to make a decison for themselves. It would not have saved the game, but allowed them to not force their message, but instead show what it means. The player just has no control and can’t carry out Ellie’s revenge. The cycle of revenge pauses and the game ends on a cliffhanger, easily setting up for a possible sequel. The story easily feels like a subverting expectations from Star Wars: The Last Jedi or Game of Thrones Season 8. There is just no payoff. It feels as if they had a story when they started, but then they scrapped it for something low quality so can fit a lot characters that mean almost nothing. Lev doesnt even have to be in the game. If you take out group that kidnaps children, then he doesnt even need to exist. That entire arc just feels like filler. The whole game is a weird fanfic that doesnt feel necessary to connect to the first game. Now for a retcon and something that really bothered me. Remember that moment in the first game where Marlene tells Joel about the possibilty of a vaccine? If you listen to the audio tapes, it is revealed that the Fireflies have found more immune people before knowing about Ellie. However, the procedure they performed kept killing them and no vaccine came from every attempt. Ellie was practically their last chance at a vaccine, but if you use logic, it is easy to see that they would just end up killing Ellie for nothing. That puts Joel in the right for rescuing Ellie right? (It is morally gray but hey it is the story of a man who doesnt want to lose his chance of being a father again and he does see the logic that their operation wouldnt save her or the human race.) It is hard to say right or wrong because Joel has done some bad things to survive. Does he tell Ellie all of this? The second game retcons and changes things. They mention cure and not vaccine. They dont mention any of the failed attempts the Fireflies have made which would mean their have been other immune people that existed or still exist, but would make no difference. So Ellie just hates Joel, for different reasons and changes to the story. It is like they didnt even care about the first game at all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best games I played this year. Despite all the controversy, I think that as a whole the story is beautifully harsh and real. It tells a story of a girl who got her heartbroken and lost herself to anger. And on the flip side, it’s also a story of redemption. Joel’s actions affected Abby. Abby’s actions affected Ellie. Ellie’s actions affected Abby. It’s a cycle of violence that stopped when they decided not to kill each other. When Ellie made the choice not to kill her.

The ending, however bittersweet, has a sliver of hope when it comes to Ellie and Dina. Perhaps explored in a DLC? I sure hope so. My only complaint is some parts of the story I felt were dragging. But it seems every time I started thinking ‘man I’ve been exploring without action for a while’, I would get jumped or something crazy happened.

The action was insane, the gameplay was solid and the world we got to explore was simply breathtaking

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have finished the game and my conclusions are still very negative after reflecting on it for a few days...

The technical aspect of the game is incredible and everything related to the environment and the mechanics are quite well elaborated.

The game tends to be too long and unnecessary in some respects and breaks with all the themes that were built in the first game.

The story is simply bad, the characters are rewritten for the benefit of the plot, too many plot conveniences and an empty, meaningless and inconclusive ending.

    SPOILERS!

I do not disagree that Joel dies, the idea of revenge is an interesting concept on paper, however, the execution is always more important than the idea and this work fails completely in the execution.
Joel's death is hasty, forced and a very large character potential is wasted by removing him from the plot.

On the other hand, the scene of Joel's death doesn't make sense, how did they know who Joel was? How come the shelter doors were open when they escaped from zombies? Why does Abby mention that she knows him without having interacted with him before?

Because of this, all those pleasant moments between Elie and Joel are lost, and the story to try to "justify" Elie's behavior, makes use of very boring flashbacks that in hindsight do not make much sense and are mere routine memories to appeal to. the good moments

And the worst part is Abby, because it is the character that begins this sequel. The game tries to give humanity and empathize with it, however, it is done at an important moment and just when it kills Jesse. Not only that, but in a revenge story, the least you can hope for is a personal relationship and character building between Abby and Elie. However, there is no character dialogue between the two, and Abby is the least, one of the most forgettable characters due to the little characterization she has and what will be remembered for having killed Joel.

The ending is disastrous and also makes no sense in the first place, the group that kidnaps Abby what is that group supposed to be and does? Where are they supposed to go at the end with the boat? Why does Elie let Abby live? They have not spoken at all or a constructive interaction, are you really trying to make believe that someone does not kill another person without knowing a little what that person is like? Why is Dina leaving the house? What about Jackson?

This sequel raises more questions than the first, but these are not due to a depth of a good story, but a totally convenient script and without having delved at all.

Revenge is a controversial topic that can take a very important role in a story like The Last of Us, however, considering that there have been plot conveniences, little or no character construction and empty outcome. Well, it does not manage to open a conversation about humanity or offer a good outcome according to what was stated in the first game, much less the second.

This game may be a wonder, as I said before, in the technical aspect and a reference in the evolution of video games in terms of aesthetics. But in the narrative aspect it is a failure and I hope and I only wish this game were not like that because it is unprofitable and it causes me a lot of disappointment.

    Technical aspects: 9/10
    Playability: 8/10
    Narrative aspects: 0/10
    Replay the game? Absolutely no.

A game like The Last of Us does not stand out for the gameplay or the graphics, it stands out for the story and that is why without a good story that has a minimum of coherence, it does not deserve a 1 for not fulfilling the fundamental piece of this franchise.

I’m sure you have heard everything that is wrong with the story and this is the reason for my score, even though the graphics are the best ps4 will ever see the game was severely affected by its bad story line and lack of character build up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Death of the main character is brutal, false advertisement that it will be Ellie and Joel story like the first one. Game mechanics still the same lousy and crappy no changes whatsoever only reason the first one was huge success is the story. No choice to let go off the dog, and was promise that they won't include dog killing on the game. Abby is such bad character and making Ellie the villian of the story, not only she spare the murderer of Joel but Ellie doesn't even get happy ending after all her suffering... This is the most lousy game that I've ever played in my life, another thing that was ruined by political views Expand

I just finished the game, the graphics were amazing and the gameplay was good but the story was bad. These agendas were forced and the game was more of a shock value, the ending did not pay off.

A truly excellent continuation of the series. The Last of Us Part II takes the moral ambiguity of its predecessor and heightens it to levels unprecedented in gaming.

I'm a psychologist and, in therapy sessions, I deal consistently with trauma, violence and horrible real pains. This game represents it so well that is really hard to play it continuously and think about it all.

It's a game for those seeking realistic and intense experiences in video games. It's for those willing to learn about life, able to think about our cruelty, our pain, the pain of the others, and our empathy.

In addition, I must point out that this was the first game that I really felt identified. I'm not saying that this is the only one that discusses race, gender and sexuality, but until now this was, in my opinion, the best. Because it's so natural, unlike many others, and because all the characters are perfectly realistic: no more fragile and weak women! Real women outside of video games are much more Ellie than Princess Peach, and I'm proud of it.

    Thank you, Naughty Dogs.

everything is great except: some sad story parts should've been better, also the companion AI is frustrating sometimes like pushing me from my cover, political gender and religious agenda felt forced, some technical issues like form drops and rendering fails.

a beautifully challenging game the poor reviews early on has made this game even more impressive to play. It got me constantly ready for the “bad parts” spoiler alert, there are none. Just challenging moments that needed to happen so the story would progress. you know, like a narrative

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I liked it, but I expected more. The story surprised me negatively. I understand what they tried to do, but every relationship built in the first gam, between Joel and Ellie, was not well developed in the second.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
