I wish I hadn't paid full price for this game, I should have waited until it dropped half the price.

I will probably forget about this game in a month like it never happened, and I would definitely not recommend it to anyone. That's too bad because i really loved the first game.

What can I say that has not already been said. After the amazing TLOU we get something that technically amazing - graphics and gameplay (although very samey and more noticeable on 2nd play through) but the Story is the biggest let down. An extremely good-looking game with tight controls and a fun gameplay loop that suffers from writers too concerned about specific characters and not enough about others. An example: Jesse, a new character that (contrary to the opinion of many) I actually quite liked and was made out to be a very important part of the story was killed, and nobody gave a damn. The ending was clearly the way it was exclusively to ensure the game could have a sequel if they so wanted to, which is alright, but considering Ellie killed hundreds of people just to get a shot at Abby, had her on the ropes, then decided to let her go? **** writing. Certainly doesn't deserve lower than a 5 however, the critics are smoking some seriously dank **** if they think this was a masterpiece like the first installment.

Play it for yourself, it is certainly worth a one time playthrough, you won't want to new game though.

Do we really expect anything else when considering the level of **** we have had over the last 10 years.

The message that violence and vengeance is a circle that will eventually come back around to haunt you is beaten into the gamer relentlessly, so much so that one doesn't feel fulfilled or enlightened by the end of the game but physically and mentally exhausted. The games setup for improving guns and skills is made to encourage replaying the game but the thought of suffering through the monotonous repetitive flashbacks and multiple endings is painful to consider and ultimately left me shelvingn the game for what could be a long while. I think 6/10 is fair. Nice try, e incredible graphics and fluid nature of the hand to hand const are not enough to raise this score. Expand

Level design is great, guns are fantastic represented and the gameplay is just freaking amazing. I'm giving a 6/10 because the history is a total nonsense. First you encounter with a grown Ellie, wich is not the Ellie from the first game because she lost any piece from her amazing personality, then Joel died at the first 2 hours, not giving you any explication. All Ellie's history was right, then Abby history, I will say it clear, no one gives a **** and the final is the top of the nonsense. If you don't care about the history you will love it. If the same story had been structured in a much different way I think this game could reach the 9 and 10 that Naughty dog usually deserves, but unfortunately when you betray the characters we love by them acting in ways that go against who they are...you leave the door open for a story that cannot connect in the way it was envisioned for the audience. Disadvantages
    false advertising

    brutal even by my standards
the moments when a player feels emotionally handicapped, lack of empathy ( I felt dislike for myself. )
    the side characters are shallow
the main objective has not been achieved
ending (When I finished the game, I realized that I no longer had any sympathy for the two heroines.)

    Additional comments:
It was supposed to be a zombie game, right? I felt that zombies are a species in extinction than the human race.
I don't think any religion should be offended in games.
I thought that in a survival game we should first focus on survival rather than social problems. Which 45 (?) years later some social problem don't have to be exist.

I feel this game pushing me so hard to feel the good-woman Abby, Incontast Ellie like the bad girl.
The whole story made Ellie a lot looser as the PTSD trilogy lost everything, lost fingers, disabled, lost ability to play guitar. Losing lovers and families (Dina and JJ)
This is the main character that fans love. she would get anything better than these ending.
Personally, if finishing like this I'd rather end it at the farm. Joel would prefer Ellie to live happily. Not losing everything like this
The ending background in Menu bar is a hopeful for Abby and Lev. The director was biased. Hopeful for Abby but the despond for Ellie

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After waiting 7 years the last of us 2 does not live up to the expectations of the namesake. The story is a mess, constantly flipping from present to past and most of the time feels like this shouldve been part 3. Joel is killed 2 hours into the game in an out of character moment setting the games plot into motion. Ellie now spends the game trying to find his killer and get revenge. The Last of Us 2 in many of its subverting expectation moments then has you play as Joels killer, Abby to lead up to the confrontation with Ellie. The two fight and Abby leaves them live after finding out Dina is pregnant. Ellie then decides to go after Abby again after Tommy guilt trips her and in the end lets Abby go. The game ends with Ellie letting Joel go and forgiving him. For me the main problem is Ellie has lost so much to Abby and in the end people died for nothing because the writers wanted to show how bad revenge is. An interesting idea but just poorly executed. Ellie is ready to kill Abby but after remembering forgiving Joel decides against it. I find it stupid and anti climatic that she would do this after what she put herself and her friends through. The writers clearly had a love for Abby and that bias showed throughout the game. She had all of the best moments gameplay wise and storywise got more interesting material. The one part of the story I really liked was the Lev/Yara and the Scars storyline. It was an interesting insight into another faction of the world and had some of the best moments gameplay wise. Riding on a horse from a burning settlement was one highlight. On the topic of gameplay this is the one place where the last of us 2 excells. It refines everything I loved from the first game and adds a couple of new mechanics like the prone ability. The environments are breathtaking and the collectibles really help build the world. There was nothing more satisfying than sneaking your way through a group of enemies silently picking them off one by one. The few boss fights the game offered were good but could be improved in future games but overall the gameplay was worth the price of admission alone. It is lacking the one thing that made the first so great, interesting characters and the characters from the first are either ruined or end up doing some stupid out of character moment to suffice the plot. The new characters are either boring or mildly interesting but overall are not up to the quality of this series. The game overall is not terrible but for a developer like Naughty Dog and a series like The Last of Us it is very dissapointing. Expand

From a technical standpoint, TLOU2 is amazing. You can clearly see the hard work put into the graphics, music and voice acting. The gameplay is fun. But the praise the first game of the series got mainly wasn't due to technical stuff. It was such a success because of the story and the characters and that's why part 2 should be judged for those factors as well. And they just don't hold up.
Part 1 was great because it was ambigous. As the player you had to judge the character's actions for yourself and there was room for interpretation. The writing was subtle and emotional. Yes, there were tense moments, shocking moments and sadness. But it was balanced out with lightheartesness and tragic beauty.
Part 2 throws that out of the window. It's one horrible emotional gut punch after another. Horrible things happen – but they don't make you pause and reflect because it's just a neverending onslaught of misery. At a certain point you stop feeling connected to the story because it's so incredibly obvious these things happen purely for shock value. A lot of contrived stuff as well. The main characters have so much plot armour – they're saved at the last moment again and again and again.
I could look past that, honestly. But what really disappointed me was how heavy handed the writing was. Gone are the subtleties. It's so obvious how the game wants to make you feel throughout the story – to a manipulative degree. But despite this I never felt connected to the characters because I was never onboard with any of their horrible and often times stupid choices.

    Spoiler:
I realy don't care how many dogs I get to pet as Abby, I still don't like her. The writers wanted the player to feel for her so badly, but I can't bring myself to do it. Even if she gets the most fun gameplay sequences. The problem I have with Abby is that she never ever reflects on her own actions. She's the one who encouraged her father to perform the operation that would have killed Ellie. And she never once questions her decision or her father's. She thinks she's justified in the beginning of the story and she still feels that way at the end. She even becomes Lev's Joel and kills her own people to save him. And yet she never makes that connection and never feels bad for what she did.

I was disappointed in Ellie's character development as well. She flip flops about whether or not she should kill Abby all the time. The story might have been salvageable if it had ended on the farm. But now I don't even feel invested in what happens to any of the characters in the inevitable third installment.

My biggest gripe with the game is that it tries to make you feel bad about playing it. What kind of decision is that? The message of the game is "revenge is bad, don't kill people". Ellie and Abby lose so much because they can't grasp that simple idea. And in the end both of them refrain from killing each other when they get the chance. But while the game tries to hammer down that moral standpoint, it makes you kill endless amounts of NPCs and makes it fun to pick them off one by one. That kind of makes the message of the game hypocritical. The whole story revolves around the consequences of Joel killing one NPC in the first installment. And here we are, killing hundreds more. So TLOS2 is basically a guy wearing leather boots and a coat made from polar bear cubs preaching about the moral superiority of vegan food.

They really could have taken it to new heights in TLOU2. Unfortunately - and for a reason I must not understand - it seems they deliberately wanted a car crash in this sequel.
There are some exceptional executions in this. The graphics and animation are first class and set a new benchmark. The gameplay, though same as previous, has some upgrades and is more fluid than before. The environments are very beautiful, though a bit same-same throughout the game.

Where this one goes off a cliff - and the reason we judge it so harshly - is that the execution of the narrative (rather than the narrative itself) is jarring to the point of offensive when you hold it next to the superbly executed original. Many people are angry at WHAT happens. I'm fine with what happens. It's a bit like the comic of The Walking Dead or the book The Road... its a bad place and can be brutal. How it was put together was like a case of bad directing, to the point that it broke the immersion and made the journey to the end of the game more like a slog, not a desire to see what happens. And the ending, without giving anything away, is just plain bad and has you feeling empty wondering what was this all for - what a waste of time and lives.

It's worse BECAUSE of the brilliance of the first. Similar to how The Godfather Part 3 was in part judged on how Part 1 & 2 were so fantastic.

Some rearrangements on the play out of the story, some changes to the way characters seem to forget who they were in the first one, and perhaps even a toning down of the at-times grotesque violence (how showing the slaying of a pregnant woman is required or acceptable really is beyond me), and this would be a worthwhile successor.

As it stands, it does the franchise a dis-service, and I will only watch for a third installment with half interest... I no longer really care about what happens in TLOU world.

The thing is though, I think the fact that all the critics reviewed this as being perfect (and many fan boys/girls) just shows how rose colored the glasses are of certain people. Sadly they are the ones who review games, and perhaps need to read more books and watch more films, because this game is far from perfect. Expand

The Abby section of the game is longer than Ellie’s and on top of that her friends are not interesting at all. In a shorter sentence, imagine if John Marston let Micah go at the end of RDR2. THATS what this game is.

The realism gives this game a feel that no other game quite has, the combat system gives you a constant adrenaline rush. Graphics are good yet inconsistent to the point it becomes annoying. Storywise it forces you to adapt to change in an uncomfortable yet realistic way when you think about the game’s setting and circumstances. Think of this game like a brand new car with a large dent on the driver’s side, everything works perfectly the gameplay feels amazing but the story is something hard to ignore. Now im going to stop being politically correct for a moment and start dropping the truth. The reason why this game has so many negative reviews is because they let somebody push a feminist agenda on a perfectly good game. They killed Joel right off the bat, They turned Ellie into Sigmund Freud’s wet dream, Ellie’s stealing a chick of some asian cuckboy and then you get to play as this monstrous giant female as if the people who work at character development have been living with an inferiority complex the size of the statue of liberty their whole lives. As for the TLOU2, I was looking forward to it for years. Played through it and the story totally ruined it for me. The game is beautiful, the gameplay is fine but the pacing is really weird and ruins the experience, the dialogues are cringy and it has a Hollywoody feel, and not in a good way. There are too many characters with no character depth and the decisions they make are just plain stupid at times. I will play it through one more time just to see what I missed but I can't see myself picking the game up after that ever again. No multiplayer also sucks. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ellie is an adult now and we get to see her again after several years. However her story is plain and isn't anything much more but an ordinary revenge journey. She is conflicted almost by anything during the adventure whether it's her closed ones telling her to abandon the revenge or a few minor flashbacks that make her quit.

Abby, who is immediately being antagonized by the game in the first hour, is trying to be redeemed with her own story. Players then should have an idea on how she feels. Her story is more diverse than Ellie's but the characters involved with Abby are not likeable and doesn't make the players invest more interest in them. You simply cannot make players to love the bad guy! Even if you give her an entire story on how she saves other people it still cannot be justified with how she brutally kills someone who players love the most from the first game.

The best part of the game for me was the relationship of Ellie and Joel. We get to see many emotional moments and even the following confrontation about Joel's decision from the last game. These flashbacks look like some form of a grief present for a death that was written quite badly. I still believe that Joel should have died in a proper way than simply being bashed by a golf club. Perhaps it's just the game's main intention as not everything is your cliche superhero game, many characters just simply die.

Ending is unfortunately disappointing. It feels prolonged rather than completed. Ellie didn't achieve anything but loss and Abby is the only character who would benefit from this fiasco. All things aside this is definitely not a bad game, it just cannot live up to the hype or the quality of the first game.

Although the story of The Last of I give The Last of Us Part II is certainly not a masterpiece from the confusing and overall out of-character Joel’s death is etc..
The gameplay is not one of the best but it surely is an improvement from the first game, with more assessable areas to go through and the more mechanics added.
The graphics are nonetheless astonishing to look at, possibly the best thing of this game, but something it shouldn’t be judged to review a game.

Here’s what I’d rate the game separately from the overall rating:

The graphics are impressive, perhaps even better than we might see with the next generation of games. The gameplay is somewhat more dinamic, with interesting combos and many variations of execution, and the same goes for the locations, giving the player the feeling that the same goal can be achieve in a dozen different ways.

The story is complicated to judge, precisely because the reason of that which I disliked is not something that can be objectively defended. The plot is complicated at times to understand, as we transition from the protagonists quite a few times, and yet that same concept also contributes for the game to push the player away from that feeling of familiarity players often acquire after ending a game with a sole character.

The story consists on a mix of what was to be expected from the first game if the worst could happen precisely at the right moment, resulting in the death of one of the franchise's most beloved character. At the same time the road in which the player is led ultimately ends in an extremely unsatisfying manner, as we see our beloved character beaten, cut, bruised, frustrated, filled with grief, struggling with some form of PTSD, and still losing her last trace of a family.

This ending is particularly unsatisfying considering the silver lining, if there is one, is shockingly nonequivalent to all the bad things the game shows. In the end, the player is taught two things:

    1) The pursuit of revenge might lead you worse than where you were;
    2) Joel would not want her to do it.

But the issue is that both of those facts are obvious, which contribute deeply to empty the ending of any shock or satisfaction whatsoever.

And this is a fundamental flaw in the writing, as a mere inversion of scenes would have rendered a completely distinct feeling, something akin to a bitter sweet ending. Instead, Ellie gave up on such a precious life to have, especially in a post apocalyptic world, to seek said peace (when it is really just revenge, as far as the game is able to convey).

One can argue that the story is not bad solely because the ending is not satisfying, or that the ending is indeed satisfying, but these two points do not seem to hold, as it either dismisses the idea that the ending of a story is not important, which is absurd, or it reveals an odd pleasure to see a character so loved to end so empty and scarred. One can also say that at the least Ellie left this journey more mature, which is a valid point, but one must also ask this: at what cost, and does that mean the story ends well?

In such a decayed world, the best direction to head would be the opposite, that is, to show that even in darkness there can be light, and even in disadvantage the innocence and purity of a love between father and daughter can triumph, even when he was brutally murdered and she sought, for a while, a path of revenge.

Unless, that is, the creators decided to make a bold move, which is praiseworthy...as long as it gets the landing right, otherwise it is just a stumble.

Unfortunately this a complicated review to make, precisely because it became so divisive and problems can be found on both sides of the reviews. If on one hand prejudice and idiotic criticism contributed to such a negative view of those who did not like the game, it seems fans who loved the first game are willing to ignore any shortcomings of this story. But the truth is that, this game is far from perfect, just as much as it is far from ratings so often spotted on this platform (anything bellow a 4 is rather questionable, to say the least).

Finally, the game has ups and downs, although it personally felt like a disaster. It is not because it is poorly designed, but solely because the story did not do Ellie's character justice exactly at the most important part of the story, which is the ending. And although this might seem like a small detail, it is not, especially in story driven games such as this one.

I knew about the leaks before I played the first game. I played the first game at least five times before picking the second one, and I can say with moral honesty that I do not know if I will ever play The Last of Us Part II ever again.

CONS: Despite the efforts of Naughty Dog to make its story convincing, TLoU2 is disappointing because its narrative and character development pale in comparison to that of TLoU1. TLoU2 tries too hard to convince the players to love its characters and its message, "Revenge is wrong." Where TLoU1 allowed the message and its characters to develop naturally through dialogue and subtext, TLoU2 seemed to force its message and characters too immediately upon the audience. TLoU1's story felt gradual and alluring, whereas TLoU2's story was standard.

TLoU2 is impressive as a standalone game, but it's nothing special when compared to TLoU1.

I don’t hate the storyline, but I think if they had presented it differently, I would’ve been more accepting. At first we get to play as this new character (Abby) in less than 1 hour into the gameplay, only to find out she’d kill Joel in the same first hour :)
So it doesn’t only make you hate Abby, but also yourself for playing this game. At this point most of players would feel so much hate and anger toward Abby and want to kill her. But then half wary through the game, they make you play for 10 hours as Abby to make you understand her character. All I got from that 10 hours is that Abby enjoys killing people and she’s the exact opposite of Ellie. During
Ellie’s part of gameplay, I loved Dina, but I wished that we got to see more of Tommy. They brought up Jessie which was the most unnecessary character. So in my opinion Tommy and Dina would’ve been more than enough as side characters. The only thing that kept me going was the thought that I would enjoy killing Abby, but that never happens. Leading to the worst ending ever.
My score on this game is mostly for the graphics and gameplay. It’s a shame that the storyline ruined everything...

Most of the events that should have made your heart cry make you feel nothing cause the story suddenly warps you out of them, and whenever something good is going on it just takes it from you. i understand it's pessimistic narrative but if it doesn't make you feel anything and it's obviously not trying to be a clever story, then what? Sad because I love the first game with all my heart. It really subverted my expectations, I thought I was going to love it and ended up dissapointed Expand

This is a above average game with some amazing graphics and incredible gameplay. That is what the game does really well. It’s combat is incredibly fun and realistic. it is a fun game if you are looking for some action. But if you what to get invested in a story and want a game that tells an incredible story than “this ain’t it chief”. The game introduces a bunch of new characters that the game really wants you to like. Me personally I tried I really did but I simply did not care for Abby, Owen and so on. The new characters are really hollow and don’t seem to have an in depth personality. An example is Abby. Like what do you know about her personality. What does Abby like exempt Owen. She is so uninteresting and the only nice thing about her is her combat moves and weapons. The story is also very uninteresting and messy. They tried to do like a Tarentino directing style. With more timelines that come to getter. Which works in a movie which last 2 hours but doing this for 10+ hours knowing the outcome is really boring. The game is in general unsatisfying. In a game you should achieve something like for example saving princess peach, defeating the wild hunt, revenging Arthur or defeating the enderdragon. This game achieves nothing and it sucks. It’s a fun one time game to experience but if you wanna fall in love and play it multiple times then you are in the wrong place. I can’t force myself through that Story again. And I don’t think most people will be able to. It is still an above average game. Saying it’s **** is wrong and saying it’s a masterpiece is also wrong. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II was fine. It wasn’t the worst game, but it also wasn’t the best. First of all, I’d like to acknowledge that this is possibly the most visually impressive game I have ever played. This game is **** gorgeous. I often found myself just admiring the environments around me or staring at the way blood pools and splatters naturally. The level of detail is beyond impressive. The gameplay is also quite enjoyable, gameplay and mechanics aren’t anything revolutionary or special, but I found it fun to play. While this has nothing to do with the story, it’s still a video game at the end of the day, and this was a fun game to play. However, in a story driven game, the story fell flat. The story itself isn’t even that bad, it was the structure that made some parts feel like a chore. Having Abby murder Joel that gruesomely, then have us play as her for half of the game made me play her parts only out of obligation, not because I was interested in her character or story. I’m not mad Joel died, however the way he died felt a little like lazy writing, but one could make the argument that his extreme caution from the first game was softened by living a relatively normal life with Ellie in Jackson. I think a better way to tell this same story would be to market it as a stand alone, a spin off of the original, following Abby and her friends traveling through the United States. Then mid way, reveal they’re looking for Joel and have him die. This could be when the tides switch and we go into control of Ellie and have her half be the exact same, then have the confrontation in the theater be the FINAL boss fight to remove the events in Santa Barbara as this felt disconnected from the rest of the game. Connecting deeply with Abby before knowing her intentions would make her actions with Joel that much more impactful on the player. Introducing her relationship with the other characters around her BEFORE we know Ellie ends up killing just about all of them would allow us to better connect with them. I found myself not really caring about the love triangle between Owen, Abby, and Mel because I already knew Owen and Mel die, so it felt pointless and a waste of time. This had to be my biggest problem with the game. Trying to make us empathize with a character we already hated then make us care about her relationships when we knew these characters died made her half of the game feel like a chore. I only kept playing out of wanting to know what happens after the cut before Abby’s section begins. And to later introduce a brand new group (The Rattlers) to only have them in 2-3 hours of gameplay was very weird. The entire time played in Santa Barbara felt like a DLC rather than apart of the same game. I have many more thoughts on this game when it comes to themes and the manipulation of gameplay between Ellie and Abby to create faux empathy for Abby. I’ve already played it twice due to the fun gameplay and stunning graphics, but the story structure is beyond annoying. I unfortunately think this will be GOTY due to the prerelease hype and critic reviews, but it isn’t deserving. Expand

In LOU 2 however, i felt that the narrative took precedence over the characters. The character's decisions were simply a tool to advance the plot. Some interesting characters were sidelined and were practically left with no development making me not feel anything when they died. Their deaths had no other value besides advancing the storyline.

Although I didn't like the direction the developers took with the storyline, I would have accepted it if they executed it in a good manner. The problem I had when I played as Abby was that I didn't feel attached to any of her friends thus their deaths didn't have an effect on me. The only character that felt interesting to me was Owen. The impact of their deaths can't possibly measure up to what I felt when Tess or Sam died in the first game.

I really tried and wanted to like this game. The graphics were amazing and the gameplay was improved while still keeping the vibe of the first game. The small details and easter eggs that is characteristic of LOU were still there and I loved it. Although they aced in these departments, personally, what made LOU franchise special to me were the characters and I felt it lacking in LOU 2

The game is groundbreaking in so many different areas, gameplay, visuals, audio, all 10/10, no doubt, but for me the story is a huge let down, and was a way to shoe horn Abby into the story, while Laura Bailey does a fantastic job as Abby, I just do not like the character, I feel that the death of Joel should have been taken, and put at the end of the game, or at the start of a Part 3, Part 2 should've been focused on Abby, with the aftermath of the firefly massacre, and being a solider within the WLF, build her character, build her character arc, it sets up for this revenge story Naughty Dog were desperate to do and would've fit perfectly into a Part 3

The combat and ambience was pretty good during the journey in Seattle. It goes down hill once Abby confronts Ellie in the theatre, and we’re jolted into some eight hours of Abby’s backstory. It is necessary to understand that her father was a firefly, but it that portion of the game should’ve ended there. Abby’s story would make for a good DLC, similar to Ellie’s Left Behind DLC, but it wasn’t enjoyable because of it’s placement in the main story. I also feel there was nothing that stood out about Santa Barbra. Their big showdown could’ve, and probably should’ve happened in Seattle. Besides changing the scene a little and briefly introducing a new faction, the Santa Barbra sequence just a shorter repeat of Seattle. I found the ending especially horrendous. It addresses nothing in regards to Ellie’s broken relationship with Dina and JJ, how Tommy might react to Ellie’s sign of mercy, or just generally how Jackson was changed by everything. It seems the theme was generally that you should always be aware of how your decisions affect those around you, but that idea is tossed out the door in the final scene. It seems the game was meant to end in Seattle, but the devs felt the game was short, so they threw extra needless fluff in to pad runtime. A decision that drastically lowered the art and potential the game had. I really wanted to like this game, I even have the Firefly insignia tattooed to my forearm, but everything after the initial confrontation between Ellie and Abby, the game went downhill. Expand

And in the final flashback it's revealed that her and Joel were able to start rebuilding a working relationship as psuedo father-daugter and it's really out of order when you put it into perspective.
