I think myself and everyone else are very upset at the decision to kill a character we waited 7 years to play again. In the first 2 hours. Then force us to play a character we do not care about for most of the game?! Almost as much as Ellie

    - Improved on the visceral weighty combat of its predecessor while reducing the frequency of daft puzzle sections. Loved it.

    - Second best looking game this console generation - right behind Horizon Zero Dawn.

    - The game tells a message instead of a story. Heartbreaking is the word- in a multitude of ways.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So this is my first review of a game but I feel I have a relatively unbiased opinion that I can share. I hope it helps someone. There are spoilers below but I have tried to be vague when possible to prevent ruining it for anyone who hasn't finished it and/or has not read into the internet anti-hype. I broke this into two sections: story & gameplay. Story: I want to say the ending is actually fine and I'm not as mad about it as I thought I would be. The story hinges on a cliche revenge arc with Ellie out to spill blood to reach a sense of closure. Half the game you play as Abby, the source of Ellie's anger. At first I was frustrated about this but it ended up being okay, I enjoyed seeing both sides of a story. As things progress you become angrier and angrier at certain characters and the writing attempts to fill you with confusing hate: "I hate Abby and I want her to die but now I'm starting to understand and feel for her. But she still deserves it." it's unorthodox which makes the player uncomfortable. That's intentional. You experience stories and letters that show the humanity of those you may (or may not) kill to progress the storyline. Again, this makes you feel conflicted and guilty (for some players) but in certain situations its a necessary evil for survival. That's the universe they've created, people do awful things on both sides. Upon completing the game you'll perhaps come to a lack of closure as many have. However, in my interpretation justice was served to a degree with the suffering and pain brought upon the antagonist (but is Abby an antagonist?). However you want to perceive it, it's done and that's what we received. All in all, the story is fine. It's not far from a cookie cutter revenge story without the revenge but at least it's different. Gameplay: It's beautiful, nearly flawless and I never caught any significant bugs except one instance where I fired a gun and the art from the flash stayed on the gun the rest of the level. Not game breaking but a little silly. That being said, it's realistic and there isn't a lot of variety. You do the same thing every single fight. Sneak around and slit everyone's throat or aggro them and let them come at you one at a time and kill them with melee weapons (ammo isn't exactly easy to come by and the AI behavior of human enemies is pretty predictable). Every time. Same thing. I got so frustrated I just started sprinting through battles to proceed. Combat against infected was more enjoyable. The behavior of the infected (especially stalkers) was much more diverse and enjoyable but it still got very repetitive over time. I truly wish I enjoyed the combat more.

Considering the semi disappointing story (although not quite as weak as the internet made it seem) and the repetitive slave like combat (slave like in the sense you don't really have much freedom to experiment) but the beautiful imagery and recreation of these real places in the US, I'd give it a realistic 6 out of 10. It's a fine game, not great, won't ever play it again. Moving on with my life.

I played the original TLOU back in 2015 or so, and I've been excited for the sequel for years. We pre-ordered it, and I don't think I've ever been so excited for a game in my life. The 2018 E3 presentation had me elated. I'm a lesbian, and Ellie felt like such a relatable character and in such a huge franchise, it just felt like this amazing gift.

Now that I've finished it, I'm so disappointed that I almost want to cry. I'm sure I will later.

I'll keep this spoiler free. This is a 10/10 game in a lot of ways. I am blown away by basically every aspect of this game aside from a couple of things. But one of them is so important to me that I had to take off so many points from the total score.

The first one I'll warn people about is that this is kind of a horror game at times, in ways that the first one was not. It's scary, stressful, and it took a huge toll on me both emotionally and even physically. (I had an upset stomach for several days and had to take a break after a particularly scary sequence.) This game is also a lot darker in general than the original. Actually both in terms of available light (tons of flashlight use here where it would otherwise be pitch black; this gave me a headache a couple of times and I had to take a break,) and thematically. I'm sensitive. Your milage may vary! I wouldn't take any points off for this alone.

And now for the big disappointment: this wasn't the game I was expecting. It wasn't the game that I wanted. I wish they had used those phenomenal resources on a different story. What I was looking so forward to was a game about Ellie. Some kind of adventure that she goes on, twists and turns, grows as a person--just typical good story things. A revenge plot could have been fine, but I wanted a character focused game. Instead, this is a game about "the cycle of violence." The characters/plot were a vehicle to tell a story about the cycle of violence. This game is extremely violent. It's stressful. A lot of the time it's grueling. A lot of the time it felt like it was trying to teach me a lesson (that I'm not sure I needed to be taught.) It made me do all kinds of things that I didn't want to do. I thought it would be worth it to see the story through, but I'm not sure that it was. :( To me, the ending was not satisfying. I'm not even sure I like Ellie anymore. It all feels kind of pointless. Maybe that's making a good point about violence and revenge. But does that make for a fun game and a satisfying adventure story?

Anyway, I do want to keep it spoiler free so there's a lot I can't say, but just know that if you loved the first game and are looking for a sequel that feels similar to that game... you might be disappointed. I almost feel like this game would be better for people who have not already played the first game. It's hard for me to judge the quality of this game because I'm just so disappointed. I spent $80 to get headaches, stomach aches, stress, and see one of my favorite video game characters of all time get sort of ruined.

That whole think with custom difficulty and controls is pretty nice. And if you have some kind of health issues like blindness or so, you can still play it and i think that is good step forward not only for Naughty Dog, but for whole game industry.

But at the other hand there is a story and story is a VERY big part of The last of us.
From the beginning i thought it's not that bad even though the "golf part" (even it came earlier then every fan expected). But later they just made you do something in the cutscene and wanted you to feel guilty for this and later it just seemed like they're incriminating Ellie for what she did and they where putting this new character in front of her.
We all know that Ellie isn't the only playable character (even though Neil said otherwise before the release), but the other character is completely new, and i think that we played as Abby (new character) for too long and that was unnecessary.

i didn't bought this game because I wanted story of new good-bad character and little bit of angry Ellie, i bought this game because i wanted to see how Ellies and Joels relationship went after the events of the first game and how they continued in they journey and maybe some new characters, but not in the way they would throw a shadow over the main protagonist from first The last of us.
I know that Neil wanted to do first game more like Joels story and the second game do more like Ellies story, but it come out as Ellies and Abbys story and as i said, it was unnecessary.

The way they putted the story really broke my heart and i know that Neil can do better...

Once you kill her, it becomes better and better until they decided to make the game longer without reason after Dina become mother. After that, it's the same, all its the same and it's just get boring, you want it to finish it. Pretty Disappointed

As beautiful a canvas as you could ever want. Still love the gameplay and mechanics. It's just a flawed, headscratching story with flat and poorly developed characters. The characters we knew and loved are abused and worse by Naughty Dog and the fans are slapped in the face repeatedly. The first game was a lot to live up to and, well: "they made a sequel; it wasn't as good."

This game was BEYOND beautiful in the way of graphics, actually a masterpiece 100%. The story has some moments that almost push you to an emotional response that coulda made this a positive review. All in all had the game been more about relations and the complexity behind such relationships they woulda succeeded on yet another master class game. The part that makes this half bad however is the stuff that ignores humans and our complexity and decides to focus heavily on human decisions. While decisions are a part of human complexity, and even something worth dwelling on they decide that the focus will be on decisions that affect themselves(such as someone preferring to be a boy, or individual sexuality) the reason this eats the games strong narrative is that those are personal decisions and don't make anyone harbor care for an individual. For an example, instead of trying to make people feel bad for someone not being excepted for being gay you should just focus on the decisions they made to make them seem cast out, like cutting hair or getting a tattoo that makes the city hate you... i digress. Basically TLOU succeeded so well because we weren't intentionally focused on joel selfishly choosing to having feelings he found a replacement for his daughter in ellie thus saving her at the end in a decision that you come to believe was morally wrong but understandable. This game is different and i just wish it showed more complexity not personal agendas. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The good: stunning graphics, loved reading Ellie's journal, every scene with the guitar, all the infected art design, the new infected types, and the Joel and Ellie flashbacks, which developed their relationship beautifully.

The mediocre: the stealth levels and scavenging got super repetitive, Seattle got stale, and Abby's friends were pretty superficially characterized. They could have done more to make the game dynamic. Environmental puzzles that are more than finding an open window. Zombie dogs. Making the wolves more competent. More vehicle mechanics and levels.

The bad: Killing off Joel at the beginning after I invested so much in his character made the game so much worse than it could have been. The heart of the first game was the bond between Joel and Ellie and any story that put that at the core of the game would be better. Make Jackson under attack; exile Joel; have scientists show up looking for a cure. Anything with them, because Abby's story never rivaled the emotional stakes of Joel and Ellie's. The game expects you to identify with her and I just never did. Second, the supporting characters are almost all underdeveloped (Isaac, Jessie, Maria, Tommy, Dina). Third, the ending is terrible. Introducing a new purely sadistic group at the end was lazy and Ellie not taking revenge on Abby was totally inconsistent with her character.

All together, still enjoyed this game and couldn't put it down because of how much I cared about the fate of Ellie. If there was a solid story it could have been great.

The first game was 9/10 for me - mostly due to an amazing story and storytelling. The gameplay was nearly perfect for that purpose and graphics were stunning on the PS3.

For the purpose of no spoilers won't go in details, but in the second half I had hard time caring for the story there because of the events in the first half.

The other main issue for me was the ending. I understand the message they want us to get there and that is fine. BUT I think with this game and the way it plays - the player deserves a choice at the end and different ending for it. After all we are different people and we react differently to the events in the game. The choice how to end it should be ours at least once. We were robbed of that in the first game but it didn't matter, because it was fitting for the way the story was told there. Here would've had better impact due to the separation of the game into two big chuncks.

First Joel dies ok but whit a golf stick are you serious? In my opinion i think Joel can dies by a shoot protecting Ellie or something more honorable for this character who only wanted to save a little girl. Second how dare they maje you play with the assasin of Joel and not a little bit time no no approximately 10 fcking hours man so extended and forced. The game its good graphically the game surpassed that anteccesor but in story In history it doesn't even come to a little part of TLOU PART 1. Even doom eternal has more history than TLOU PART 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The bulk of it's problems are it's lack of focus, poor pacing and, ultimately, a poor consideration of what made the original story and the characters not perfect, but great and relatable.

This game has a lot of good qualities. From it's impressive visuals, sound fidelity, visceral combat (on high difficulties), highly detailed vast environments and some really tense moments, The Last of Us Part II significantly improves almost every technical aspect of the original, making the artists the real stars of this show.

However, these qualities aren't enough to carry a broken, messy story, as the game tries to undo notions about some of it's characters, and spends a lot of time brushing through themes that were already best presented in the first game, while also bringing new themes every now and again without time for proper reflection.

For an example, there's a lot of story and gameplay time used at an attempt to redundantly show and equalize "both sides of a coin" – which is not a complicated or new concept, especially after the winter and ending section of the first game – while forgetting the player is already, understandably, biased towards the side they spent the most time connecting to. This concept is made clear pretty soon, but the creators think it's necessary for you to see a whole lot more of it, all while drawing some less effective, fanfiction-like parallels to reinforce what's already obvious and control some of the damage they did themselves. Not to mention, without getting into spoilers, that the main catch of the ending only gets to develop throughout 9-10 hours or so of this twenty plus hours long game, making most of what's been played seem even more unnecessary for the overall resolution, even more if you think that characters had plenty of time to reflect on what they're about to do.

By watching and reading interviews, it definitely seems like Naughty Dog wrote big chunks of this story long after starting development, without a solid backbone to base their decisions on, flip-flopping time and time again about what the core of the game is. Characters only seem to have clear-cut intentions and ideas when writers consider it necessary to deflect criticism about character actions. Otherwise, their motivations are an open-ended world of complex possibilities where you fill the gaps the writers left open.

In short, this sequel will stick with you long after you finish it, but probably because it leaves you wondering what it could have been if writers didn't recklessly place most of their bets in it's eye-rolling shortcomings.

One thing I can say that is good is the graphics and artistry that Naughty Dog did but other than that I don't see the appeal to finish this game. From the lies that they published to the actual gameplay itself does not really satisfy me as a gamer. The plot and this random character you get to play as (Abby) has no place in last of us and now you get to see her in the second one? What? Sorry for the rant and the spoilers but the game doesn't live to its expectations. I mean realistically game or movie series don't usually follow up well with the original storyline but this one is astonishingly bad. Why the fudge are we playing as Abby and how can meta critic and other recognizable gaming review sites rank it this high? This just baffles me. With all this negativity there are some good features about this game though. One of them being exposing the LGBT community into video games, but it seems like this game used it as a marketing strategy. Another thing is that it obsesses a lot of emotional and real life situation that many experienced in real life and this really attracted me from the start. My final thing is that the physics and controlling the character is pretty accurate and exciting. Combat is fun and it didn't change and I salute them for that. Overall this game has more cons than pros and a game like this that changed my perspective of gaming really let me down. I hope anyone reading this feels the same or if you don't thats fine. I am glad there are some people enjoying this game but I am not one of those people unfortunately. Why couldn't we play as Joel till his death or his brother Tommy? I'll leave it at that. Thanks. Everyone keeps saying that we’re mad because Joel is dead but it’s actually the WAY he died that’s annoying. The gameplay is good but some parts are really boring and the only new characters i liked were Yara and Lev (Dina and Jesse were okay but Yara and Lev were more interesting).
I don’t hate the game but i don’t love it either. The ending was just kinda meh. Why did Ellie have to kill all those people to just forgive Abby? It was very unsatisfying to see Ellie all alone without Dina, JJ and two of her fingers.

Judt finished it and honestly I enjoyed the gameplay and the breathtaking graphics and the world they built is phenomenal but after sometime the gameplay get really repetitive and a bit boring. The story is the worst part of the game. The characters are uninspiring and the way they killed off Joel was done poorly. Half of the game you play as Ellie and the other half as Abby and I hate that I have to play as Abby it gets really boring after sometime and felt more like a dlc and disconnected from the actual story. They try so hard to get you to care about this character and other character that are just bland and it just doesn't work. And the ending was put a nail in the coffin. Ellie killed like 1000 people to get to Abby and when she had the chance to do it all of a sudden she has a change of heart. The theme is just a generic revenge story and you learn in the end revenge is bad. This one was a disappointment story wise Expand

I have extremely mixed feelings about this game. I did not enjoy the story (partially the things mentioned above, partially dislike of writing decisions), which is what drags this game down for me. I loved the technical things, like the gameplay, the bosses, atmospheric settings etc, but it's not enough to save a story-driven game. Having bonded so much to Ellie and Joel's relationship, I found it hard to be engaged for Abby's part of the game despite that's what the game wants us to do. I UNDERSTAND the game and the ending, my opinion comes down to personal preference.

My favourite thing about TLOU 2 was the relationship between Ellie and Dina, which made the experience much more enjoyable than it otherwise would have been. I am a bi woman, so I appreciated a game of this size going all in with a wlw relationship. Ellie's flashbacks were wonderful and very touching.

I went in blind with this game, TLOU is my favourite game of all time and I have anticipated this for so long. I avoided all leaks, having only seen official trailers and gameplay footage. Unfortunately I ended up quite disappointed, but I still think the game is worth playing through. It is a technical/visual masterpiece, but unfortunately not as a whole including the story, in my opinion.

The way Part 2 sets up the story within the first 3 hours makes it seem like a revenge story, but by the end it becomes something completely different, and Ellie's motivations are a little odd, with an ultimately unsatisfying end that leaves things wide open for a sequel.

The graphics are great, the gameplay is okay (Similar to the original, leaving much to be desired) and as before the music is fantastic. The story is a very disappointing followup. Character's motivations are odd, and out of character nearing the end of the game. The pacing is odd at times, trying to weave together two stories meeting at some point.

It was impossible to follow up the greatness of the original, but this doesn't even come anywhere near furthering the legacy. If you want great graphics and decent gameplay, I'm sure you'll have fun playing the game, but I'm certain you'll feel as unfulfilled as I did 6 hours into the game, all the way through to the end. If a sequel were to come out, I just can't get excited about a ND game again after everything I loved about the original was butchered.

But who has set up TLoU part 2, has ever played the first? I don't say in writing, I wonder, did Druckmann start from the TLoU script or from the 2013 TLoU final game? Because I have the impression that Druckmann did not play it
the game of 2013, let alone Part 2.
As a videogame player I feel fooled.
The game is written with such superficial content and pretexts that I wondered throughout the game: Ok but when does the plot start to mesh?
When does this stupid paradoxical comedy end?
Did Druckmann take into account that the players think while they play and know after 2 hours that he is throwing on the fire badly explained and intentionally incomplete events to keep this clown standing up?
The player knows very well what Joel rightly leads to making the final choice, and he knows equally well that Druckmann omits in all this initial reconstruction the Terrorist behavior of the fireflies towards Joel.
They created Part 2 of a very different story, where Marlene (Ellie's adopted mother) totally comes from the girl.
The player realizes that the whole part played with Abby is exposed to make her put on the same level as Ellie, but at the same time the player sees the events that are totally exposed in the opposite way, Abby always kills in cold blood, would kill everyone at the Cabin and even at the theater, only Owen and Lev prevent her from doing so.
Ellie instead always tries to get to Abby looking for information, but the enemies always react by attacking her instead of indulging her.
Anyone realizes that this way of writing is not inspired at all, but is simply ridiculous.
Reflection: many already speak of TLoU part 3 and wonder what it could be, now that this useless Part 2 has badly consumed the whole cast.

As far as video game sequels I've played from Naughty Dog, I have not had any complaints as all. The entire Uncharted Series was enjoyable, the first Last of Us game had a mix of suspense and climax, but I have many questions for the Last of Us 2.
I didn't really care if the game was pumped with politically correct narratives. What i wanted was more screen time with Joel and Ellie, and the flashbacks don't really do it for me. There were also 2 things that made this game worse, it was the delayed release date and the false advertising from the teaser trailer. In my perspective, delayed products are always the worse, even when it wasn't even worth the wait. I don't understand why Joel had to die, but we cant do anything about it. The entire pace of the game bothered me the most, because the flashbacks felt like downloadable content. Its like there was another chunk of the story that's missing. I've heard other people say that the game play mechanics and the graphics were outstanding. However, if the story is not satisfying, the entirety of this game is pointless.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a potentially wonderful game ruined by the incompetence of its director. The last of us 2 *somehow* manages to be less than the sum of its parts. Gameplay is greatly improved, the graphics are incredible, level design is stellar. Yet I had to stop playing it at the ground zero level because I reached that point where I started asking myself why am I still doing this which is the point where I trained myself to stop playing a game. It is two maybe even three games lazily slapped together for no apparent reason with very little thread connecting them. The characters are impossible to care about. And whatever good will we have remaining from the previous game Naughty Dog (or rather I assume Neil Druckmann) has no qualms throwing out the window.

Ellie is now about as sympathetic as a rabid badger. The chemistry between her and her supposed love interest is non-existent. The only characters that I liked were Lev and his sister. But as I said it is three games seemingly written by three different people or groups of people. If only there was someone that would be responsible for keeping a sense of direction in this game. I don't know, like a "director" if you will. I sometimes wonder if Neil participated in those crunch sessions because the direction in this game seems like it was done by someone who **** off at 16:00 every day.

Another huge problem is that the game is 30 hours long. That might be fine if you are a child. If you are an adult with responsibilities a game has to justify every single of those hours and the last of 2 can make an honest claim for doing that for about 15 of them. The rest is pointless padding that annoyed me the more I played of it. You play as Abby during this part. Which I guess they thought would be kinda cool and that is literally how much thought they put into it. Because it isn't cool. It is pointless and stupid. The motivations of the characters are laughable. Here is what would have happened in reality - Abby comes and kills Joel. The rest of the town including Ellie go **** this sucks" and go on with their lives. Joels death *really* didn't feel like a driving force behind the game. And in about 10 hours it was entirely forgotten with the characters just going through the motions.

Well, now that I've played through the entire game, I figured I'd add my review to the pile. Well, now that I've played through the entire game, I figured I'd add my review to the pile. Let me preface by saying that I think both extremes of the fandom are wrong - this is not the worst sequel of all time that deserves a rating of 1 to 4 out of 10, but neither is it a generation-defining masterpiece that deserves all the critic accolades it got.

With that said, let's start with the good. For starters, the gameplay is great. In this regard, the game does what a sequel should do - it builds upon the solid foundation laid by the first title by expanding gameplay options in all directions. The encounters are very fun to play through, whether you choose to take a stealthy approach or gun everyone down, and they are improved heavily from the last game with better enemy AI, more enemy types and more actions available to the playable characters. Exploration is similarly improved from the last game, with more traversal options, and the development team truly outdid themselves with regards to map design - the post-apocalyptic environments are interesting to explore in times of peace, with large maps offering lots of nooks and crannies, filled with both collectibles and items necessary for survival, and the maps provide great venues for combat encounters, with the size and variety of areas giving hundreds of options to approach each encounter. In this category, the game deserves all the praise. In addition to that, it should come as no surprise that, just like every other Naughty Dog title preceding it, the game looks and sounds great. Just like the original game was on the PS3, the sequel is a swan song to the aging PS4 console, squeezing out everything that its technical capabilities can provide. To top it all off, the game is loaded with tiny immersive details that have been a staple of Naughty Dog games for years. From the gameplay perspective, the game is an absolute treat to play through.

Now let's get to the less favorable stuff. The story of the game that the fandom reacted so strongly towards, unfortunately does indeed disappoint. I won't get into spoiler details, but as a huge fan of the first game, I felt like the game mistreated the characters from the original game. And I feel like a large part of the fandom fallout is generated due to Naughty Dog failing to deliver on the promises made to players - namely, that they would tell a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. Throughout the game's marketing campaign, we the fans were assured that the studio understands how strongly people feel about these characters and that the second game would do them justice. Unfortunately, after playing the game, those promises now ring hollow. Despite trying to keep the review spoiler-free, I feel the need to warn any fans of the first game who might be reading this - the game's story trailers are extremely misleading. For one, if you are a fan of Joel, you should know that Joel plays a far smaller role in the game than the trailers would suggest. In addition to that, if you thought this would be Ellie's story first and foremost (something Naughty Dog also assured the players of in the interviews), know that that was also a lie, for the game has a new playable protagonist Abby. The biggest problems with the game's narrative happen due to Abby being kind of forced into it, pulling you out of Ellie's story at a climactic moment, and then spending a large portion of the game playing as the new protagonist instead. And while I felt that Ellie's story was somewhat weak as well, Abby's side of the story is that much weaker. In many ways it retreads a lot of ground from the first game, only doesn't manage to live up to it by a long shot.

The beauty of the first game was in large part due to its simplicity. It was a story of two very likable characters going on a journey together against all odds, and the bond they forged along the way. For the second game the developers clearly wanted to cast a wider net, but in the process, they seemingly forgot or consciously ignored what made people fall so much in love with the first one. While the scope of the second game's story, as well as its cast of characters, is larger than the last game, neither aspect feels as well-done as the first game. Ultimately, the game left me feeling empty that of all the possible ways of furthering the story of Joel and Ellie, they picked the one they did. And this being a story-heavy game, of course that is going to affect the rating a lot.

In the end, I would give this game an 6/10, with the disappointing nature of the story subtracting three points from what could have been a perfect 10/10 rating, and further subtracting one more point for Naughty Dog's blatantly deceptive marketing tactics. I feel like a lot of the backlash for this game could have been avoided if they had been upfront about the kind of direction they wanted to take the game in, instead of "subverting expectations" (god but I've grown to hate that phrase).

This is the best looking game on the PS4 PERIOD. Environments are riddled with detail and the game does a fantastic job of making the world feel very realistic. Combat is also very good here. As many others has said, the story have major plotholes that basicly abandons the characters from the first game. gameplay is good and great, graphics is best in the industry, but the story seems forced. I am trying to play through a second time, basicly skipping every cutscene except those including Joel and Ellie together. **** I wanted this game to be a sequal to the first game, but it isn't. Too many new characters that i don't care about at all. As well as playing a character you want to kill at every opportunity for 10 hours. The game is simply not very fun to play after you have played it once. It is depressing, I have finished the first game almost 10-20 times as well as getting a platinum. I don't see myself platinuming this game in the near future. It feels like a waste of time sadly. I just hope that they don't mess up the future multiplayer.

I love the first game and wanted to love this game, but I don't... They disrespected the characters and the fans to much. The trailers were also false advertising, showing Joel alive with Ellie on her path to revenge, only to kill him off and replace him with a guy which I hardly even remember the name of.

There are lots of pro's, and just as many con's. Stunning visuals, incredible acting, massive world building, emotional audio; the game is extremely well-made mechanically and graphically and deserves commendation on these fronts. The story is where everything becomes precarious, however. It is obviously trying to test the player's expectations and adaptability while subverting expectations, but in my opinion it simply oversteps the boundary between artful subversion and sabotaging the story's momentum and, ultimately, appeal. The core of games is the element of fun: it is what drives people to play the game. A video game can be incredibly deep and tell a story unlike any other while also remaining fun and engaging. That is precisely what the first Last of Us did. However, with Part II, "fun" isn't exactly found in plenty here. Instead, after all is said and done, I feel that the player is left with a feeling of emptiness and disappointment. It's not a sobering, eye-opening-realization sort of emotion that can be commendable like in other titles, but rather one of almost irriation and a longing for the game they hoped to play after over half a decade of waiting. Some elements are certainly "fun" and inspire a sense of adventure and creativity, such as interacting with the beautfiul environments found throughout the world or deciphering the best method of stealthing through a level, but anything to do with the story at hand is simply disappointing and unintersting for long stretches of time.

The game deserves praise for its sheer scale and graphical fidelity, as well as its attention to detail and narrative craftsmanship (no-one denies the amount of time and attention put into that). But in the end, the feelings of "fun" and satisfaction so important to successful titles is scarce. The Last of Us Part II is better than many are giving it credit for, but is also a far-cry from its masterpiece of a predecessor, leaving many who endured the campaign feeling simply thieved of the narrative they believed should've been in place.

Once finding out I had to do all 3 days again as Abby, I went from looking into every nook and cranny, to just run and gun. As it was sorta pointless as you know what’s going to happen. Also don’t understand how Joel could get so easily ambushed in this game, but in the first game he knew straight away that the man on the highway who wanted help, was apart of an ambush, and he even didn’t trust Ellie at the start but did Abby. After finishing the game I sat back and fought to myself that whole journey was pointless, and felt like I would of been better off just spoiling the game for myself and not buying it. Positives are great graphics and I enjoy the combat and the new prone and hiding features. The best thing ND can do in my opinion. As I played thru the first few hours I enjoyed the gameplay, the graphics, the beautiful scenery, hell I even enjoyed picking up the collectible cards that had super heroes on them. The accessibility options for the game are top notch. But this damn story!!?!? just all over the place. Ellie is demonized while were forced to try and empathize with Abby, who is no saint whatsoever by the way. actually her arc is already finished within the first few hours of the game! she gets exactly what she wants in a most convenient fashion. and just when you think you get to exact your revenge.... We are treated to 12+ more hours of why we should all respect this other character and demonize Ellie for......well for essentially killing a dog, in which we had no choice cause it was literally self defense, and well... there wasn't any other choice. skipping to the ending where as I played I felt like I had about 3 false endings... Ellie still cant cope and HAS to exact revenge...........but nahhhhhhhhh. just as you feel like, here it comes, here is the revenge literally EVERYONE is waiting for.......flop, she allows Abby to sail off into the mist while she gets to return to NOTHING! (and a few less fingers). and thats it. she cant even play her guitar anymore so she just leaves it and walks off to hell who knows after that butchered story most likely walk herself into a room full of clickers......Garbage Storytelling!

and no... i'm not a close minded bigot of any sort. My problems don't have anything to do with the inclusion of LGBTQ characters. it's the **** job they did trying to justify half of the characters who were just as bad if not worse than Joel, Ellie, or Tommy. they spent so much time trying to make Abby likable and at no point does that ever resonate. i found myself wanting to know more of the seraphites and the prophet more than anyone else in the game. yet their abandoned and just labeled as crazy bigots.

The overall combat and gameplay is great for 7-10 hours then becomes a repetitive drag. Only 1 new type of enemy and it's not that big of a deal. The story is flawed 3 hours in and doesn't make up for it. It makes you hate Elly and tries to make you like Abby but doesn't until the end when you just want to be done with the game. The last 6-7 hours I lowered the difficulty out of boredom of the combat so I could finish the story which was not worth it. This game started off great to ok. Then fell apart and in the end I just didn't like it. Expand

I have nothing to complain about the technical aspects of the game, they are all very impressive, especially for all the accessibility options they included.

The problem is really the story, which is told in such an dumb and manipulative way that it completely fails to make the player feel any sympathy for Abby or any other character in her arc. Remembering this game just makes me sad

While other studios put as much effort into making the player stay as long as possible in the game, Naughty Dog has managed to create a game that once finished, I never want to play it again in my life.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to start off by saying that the game is not good, it is not bad but it's good, the game creates feelings in the gamer that were meant to exist. The game created anger and the feeling of revenge that is understandable for what to happen to Joel but I can't wrap my head around the reason why Joel died, my initial thought was that it brought something bigger to the table, something that might be bigger than Jackson, The Fireflies, The Scars or WLF but it wasn't the reason for Joel's death, the only reason for why Naughty Dogs decided to take this path was to get revenge on something that didn't even happen in the first game this means that the first game and everything that makes the first game very good is thrown out the trash to pursue something new and force new characters in the game, also forcing the player to follow a character that one is meant to be hated and two brings stupidity and a dumbass back story that can easily be as dumb as her stupid muscles, Abby character by herself destroyed the first game and the second and keep in mind that she wasn't even in the first game but let's take account of what she did to destroy this franchise

The developers created Abby's part of the campaign to make the gamer understand why Abby did what she did but the gamer doesn't care, we care about Joel and Ellie and what happens to them, not about a character who is tied to the first game but doesn't appear by killing the main reason why we played the second game and the reason why we waited 7 years for this game which is Joel, every time I decided to play the first game I'll just think of the emptiness the first game has, taking account that the second game makes me hate the first game and that's the hardest thing a franchise can do which is making a gamer hate the first game with the second game this means that developers made a perfect game but made us hate it not by changing the first game but making a second game that is so bad at telling a story that at the end of the day destroys the franchise

The story sucks and since the story is the only contact the game has to the player this means the game sucks which tears my heart out because it had the base to become even better than the first one and even worse is that naughty dog hyped this game as a successor to the first game by making trailers that have nothing to do with the final result by misleading the player to play the game but then making the gamer try to enjoy it but we can't because the simple reason is that they killed the game off in the first two hours of the game if you decided to stop playing the game after the two hours you are not missing out on anything and if you are considering on buying the game I advise you to because at the end of the day the game is a sequel to one of the best games ever and I believe that as a gamer we are obligated on playing even if I know beforehand that the game was going to be bad I would have to play it

The Last Of Us 2's story makes me hate naughty dog as a company because the money, time, manpower, equipment even the creativity to make this game perfect but the didn't, they wasted near a decade on making a game most people don't like by them wanting to send a stupid message that violence is not the answer but proceeds to kill off a great character like Joel and Jesse and if you think that at the end of the game you finally get the justice that Joel deserves your wrong because the wanted to send a message of violence is the answer but after you slaughtered hundreds of people, killed animals and killed a pregnant woman so basically Ellie lets Abby live because she remembered Joel but honestly if I was in her position and lived through the things she had to live through I, taking account that Joel has been here father figure and also the person who teaches her, protects her, defenses her, loved her and saved her I would have killed Abby the same she killed her, I hate Ellie for sparing Abby the way she and at the end of the game Ellie is left with nothing, literaly nothing she literaly started with everything and ended up nothing not even with a the feeling of fullfillment because the only thing that made her kill everybody, lose her family and lose Joel was to kill abby and doesn't even kill her.

The story is bad and I can't suggest the game but even with all the errors the game has it is decent enough to be played and to enjoy the gameplay, the conclucion is if the like the first game you won't like the second

I had to sign up here and write a review, mainly because i was so disappointed at the lack of diversity of thought in games journalism giving a game with many glaring faults the title of 'masterpiece'.

    So the positives:

•Great presentation such as its graphics and environments. Animation is by far the best we've seen this generation.
Enemies have a very human like response in and to combat, they'll call each others name when one dies, they'll give orders and sometimes scream in agony on the floor as they bleed out from missing a limb... awesome.

•overall gameplay is brutal and meaty like the first, with additions like a dodge button, being able to crawl to enter stealth in tall grass. New additions such as dogs and new infected keep it fresh enough for the 25-30 hour total length. Upgrade trees giving different choices of playstyle are neat.

    • brilliant accessibility and difficulty customization, by far the best on console.

    Now the negatives:

    • The story is very poorly paced, there are rumours a lot was cut, chopped and changed, you can tell they clearly had disagreements with how to pace and lay out the story- its a mess.

    • For a Last of Us sequel it has poor writing, both in the dialogue and the really clear contrivances that play out.

•Unlikeable characters of which the game very bluntly tries to force empathy with by using props like other characters who's whole purpose is to get the player feeling a certain way or to add to the overall commentary of the game. The game is happy to use Joel as a tool to cheaply attempt the player to feel emotion rather than it occurring through natural dialogue or events.

    • Its pretentious and the main focus of everything is the commentary it tries to make. People who feel this game is a masterpiece will go onto condescend how others "might not get it" or "lack empathy" or even disregard it as all bigotry (although there are attempts to hate this game because... gays?) Listen... the theme is so heavy handed its hard to miss, so is the commentary the game bludgeons the player depressingly with over and over and over with...

it's abit self indulgent and all of it is premised on one scene very early on being the motive for revenge, said scene is the issue, if you don't buy into it being believable or you think its contrived its extremely hard to buy into the story going forward and feel anything but being taken on the most depressing roller coaster ride where characters are bland, unlikable (especially Ellie) and changed.

I feel like Naughty Dog took one of the most beloved game and characters of all time and decided to turn it into a message and commentary with those characters being the sacrifice for said commentary, while inverting some characters to maybe attempt to either add depth or complexity but ultimately fails in a way that reminds me of the trend set from season 8 of Game of Thrones or the latest Star Wars.

    Yes, that bad.

Lastly, i dont know why so many in games media thought this game was perfect when players and even 'influencers' feel so different.. Maybe they did just genuinely enjoy it and games media has a severe lack of diversity of thought... maybe it was activism and progressive politics (of which i feel this game has been somewhat unfairly characterised as having blunt identity politics...it doesn't). Who knows, but its far from a piece of art imho but the gameplay is phenomenal.

I had two playthroughs roughly 55 hours total.

    Thanks for reading.

It was pretty bad. It was exhausting. The entire Abby part I just want it to be over. They dragged the story for too long, and they put small annoying things that it came out horrible.

    1. Making you kill dogs

    2. Playing Abby right after killing the only likeable character, Jesse.

    3. Irresponsible pregnant women jumping and running around

    4. That sex scene

    5. Making you play as Abby in the theater

This game has the potential to be an 8 outta 10 or even a 10 out of 10 for me because the gameplay and animations are great the world and graphics are beautiful the sound and details and all the little things that went into this game is top notch. I loved the different zombies and enemies types and loved the just scares in this game but the only thing that killed it for me was the story. I did not mind that they killed Joel for shock value I like how the game had a dark tone and was gory it felt like a horror game. Which makes sense for this world that these characters have to live in. Having what happened to Joel makes sense for the revenge rampage Ellie then goes on in this game. I just wish they didn’t lie to us in the trailers making it out like we can play with Joel because I bought the game thinking I was going to get a different experience then what I got. I still would have possibly bought it if I knew what the game was actually gonna be like but for a lot of people they would not have the dynamic of Joel and Ellie was not there in this game and Abby and Lev dynamic definitely didn’t make up for the loss or feel the same way they did in the first game. That dynamic is why people loved the fist game in the first place and wanted to buy Part 2 because people wanted more of the Joel and Ellie duo and wanted to see where the story took these two. Also a lot of people did not like the fact that they were lied to about not having to kill dogs but in this game you are forced to which I don’t mind it doesn’t bother me but I can see how it bothers some people. I also did not like how we had to play 10 hours with Abby and where forced to sympathize with her character and understand why she did what she did to Joel when in the beginning of the game they made us absolutely hate her and her character. Maybe if they reconstructed the story and had all the Joel and Ellie flash backs and Abby’s flashbacks actually be apart of the story and happen in the beginning of the game we might have liked her character more and understood why she did what she did but no that’s not the story we got. I also didn’t like when we finally got done playing through with Abby we were forced to beat up and almost kill Ellie and Dina I didn’t like how Abby was such a cold hearted killer with no remorse and dealt with no side effects to her daily life and mental health I did like how Ellie had ptsd from what happened bc it makes sense. Going through what she had to go through and living in that world would be hard for anybody and I like how they did that they made Ellie feel more like an actual human. I also like how naughty dog tackled real like issues and topics with this game without getting to political the world is crazy enough and that’s why we play video games is to get away from that kinda stuff sometimes. Which brings me to the last part of this game that I did not like which was the ending. They should have just ended it with her on the farm with her new family trying to live and learn how to be herself again and get over the all of the things she has seen and gone through up until that point and maybe left us with a cliff hanger for the third game but no. They had Tommy show up who I thought was dead and guilt trip her into keeping her promise and going after Abby again. Which felt rushed And didn’t feel like was the original ending that was supposed to happen. I didn’t mind the Rattlers and I liked playing in Santa Barbara but I didn’t like how they caught Abby and Lev and that’s how Ellie finds her all weak and dying and that’s when you finally get to fight her. We have seen Ellie take down some big enemies but instead they have us fight Abby like this. It made it seem like Ellie could not beat Abby at full at strength and they knew this and it felt kinda disrespectful to her character. I loved the fight between the two at the end but the fact they just let her go made it feel like I wasted my time and killed all those people to get to Abby for nothing. Definitely super unfulfilling and unsatisfying ending for me and she still didn’t get Justice for Joel. She did not keep her promise to Tommy. Dina left her and now since Abby bit her two fingers off she can not even play the guitar which was one of the last things she could do to remember Joel by and just leaves the house and walks into the woods and that’s it. Terrible ending story wise in my opinion. I do feel like this is a game everyone should play but in my opinion just wait until it goes on sale or just borrow it from a friend. 6/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. From a technical perspective this game is a masterpiece. From combat to movement game is in a great shape. Environment is gorgeous, animations are fluid and impactful when it comes to combat. You can see how much effort developers put into this game by simply checking even such small thing as weapons upgrading. When upgrading a weapon your character will actually detach part that is being upgraded and will either replace it with new one or visually change current one, and all of this will be properly animated. When it comes to story — developer’s tried to show both sides of it, I actually liked it, but it seems like because we have two main characters from both sides too many retarded moves are made by them just to keep each other alive.

I finished this game on hardest difficulty available and now I will try to explain what I liked and disliked.

    What I don’t like:
    1. Retarded AI. Sometimes it is enough to run behind a corner for enemies to lose your track. 2. Arenas becomes boring after several hours of gameplay. After several hours in game you will notice that gameplay follows the same formula — you will be put in small arena, enemies are patrolling it, and exit will be blocked with “hold triangle to open this door” thing, which basically means you have to kill all of them, because opening this door will make noise and take time, which will attract enemies and they will not let you do this unless all are dead. 3. Ammo limitation. Because ammo is limited in this game you’ll have to count every shot, and also developers won’t let you pick more than 12 bullets for rifles, 16 for pistols and around 10 for shotguns. Why the **** this is a thing ? 4. Weapons variety is extremely limited.
    5. Pregnancy. Oh boy, why every pregnant women in this game have to go to frontline ?
    6. I don’t wanna beat up Ellie
    7. Abby kills Joel, Ellie kills Abby’s friends, now they are trying to kill each other. This revenge circle man.
    8. 2 boss fights, both the same, you even have to kill the same creature. The only difference is that one you kill as Ellie, second one as Abby.

    What I liked:
    1. Visuals. Obviously.
    2. Environment
    3. Combat. Fluid and impactful animations, just what you need.
    4. Exploring is actually fun and rewarding.
    5. Cut-scenes and face animations even during combat will actually let you understand what character feels right now. Even in small talks facial animation of your character will let you understand how he feels about this topic. Just awesome.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is a good game based on gameplay and setting no doubt about it. The problem I have with it is the characters feeling bland. Biggest let down about the game is FORCING us to play as Abby when we really don't want to. I get that we are supposed to get an open mind about other peoples situations and what not. But when it starts of with her brutally torturing and murder Joel right in front of Ellie I really don't care about her past and reasons. All I wanted to do throughout the entire Abby part was to just let her die. The replay value of the game sinks to rock bottom when you know you have to spend hours playing as a character you despise.

Don't get me wrong, the game-play with her and her story in general is superb but when you truly hate the character it feels awful playing with her. Had the game been structured differently it could truly have been a masterpiece like the first game but as it stands now, just no. Anyone giving this 10/10 can't possibly have played the first game or they have been payed to rate it...

Sounds 10/10 (best I had ever heard if not perfect, the closest it can get)
Lights 9/10 all of these things are amazing and top notch... but the story, man... I think it is a nice story, it was well done but very very poorly executed... Joel’s death... I understand these people hate him and the way they killed him, sure... Joel had it coming, he killed a lot of people, he was not a good guy but we still loved him, in our eyes he was justified, he was a good guy (objectively he wasn’t)... I expected and wanted Joel to die so we would have a purpose but just not this way... The decisions made by Joel in the second game was just plain stupid... and let’s accept that he **** up and got himself bashed by a golf club sure, the more blood the better but then I don’t wanna play as the woman who killed him for 10 hours... that is just boring, there is no redemption for Abby, I don’t wanna connect with her after she killed Joel, maybe if they made me connect with Abby first and then she killed Joel, I would still be angry but I would of not quit playing 50 times while playing as Abby because it was just pointless... I just hope the third game ain’t gonna be this dark and pointless, they just made Ellie suffer (Sure, she went on revenge instead of living her life and so when she comes back she has nothing left) I understand that but it was just not worth playing to be honest, I would have rather just leave everything as they were in the first game... In short, technically this game is amazing 9/10 (It can never be perfect), story wise (which matter to me the most) good story but super **** execution so 5/10 (-5 for **** execution, +5 for the story itself) and not worth full price...

Graphics were amazing, and gameplay was awesome - if not a little repetitive to the end with some encounters. I loved the first game and have played it multiple times; enjoying the dynamic between Joel and Ellie and looking forward to part 2 for years - the story was what made the first game amazing. i felt the story was what really let part 2 down. I got behind it for the first half and the flashbacks of joel and ellie, but really did not enjoy playing the second half. it almost feels like they did too good a job in the first game that after seeing what abby did, i just did not care for her side or empathise towards her at all which is what the writers really had to achieve in order for the player to like the story. it didn't help that overall i thought she was a dislikable person. I feel to achieve a goal that they aimed for you have to have a fair bit of hubris to even think to attempt it, which was a big risk in itself /an amazing character and writing - and overall abby as a character and her story really did not do it for me. With Ellie i spent the first half exploring the world and taking my time, whilst i groaned audibly when i realised id be grinding through abby and her friends story line for half the game, just so i could get back to the story i really cared about - Ellie, dina and Tommy. i literally rushed my way through with Abby just to get back to where the story switched and cheered when half her friends were killed off. I also feel like the final 'epilogue' set after the initial ending was probably not needed. Especially to have Ellie give up on so many good things and make the final decision she made - it made little sense after going on a genocide across America and felt like a waste of time/unsatisfying to me. Guess i may be a little bit more old testament then some. By the end i was just exhausted. 6/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am with the party that heavily disliked the direction and execution the writers decided on for TLOU2 at the start of the game (I did spoil myself). However, as I played through the game there were points where we could get a sense of what the writers wanted to achieve by creating a dual narrative with moral ambiguities between Ellie and Abby, such that in certain perspectives you can see their actions as justified - righteous even. However, their execution on this matter was criminally poor.

Before I delve deeper into the story and characters I do want to say that the gameplay, sound design, and graphics were fantastic. Each melee attack had its distinctive weight depending on the make-shift weapon used, the enemy AI was intelligent and fair and the level design as a whole was done well. The ambience of each environment was distinctive and the infected noise and enemy callouts were pivotal in allowing a 3-D in one's mind. The sharpness of the textures, quality of shadows, each movement of the character models were slick and smooth. Nothing was revolutionary in these departments per se but their quality was of the highest level that one would expect for a triple AAA game, no less a Naughty Dog title.

The most controversial part of TLOU2 was the brutal death of Joel very early on in the game and this is where all of the inconsistencies and perplexities stemmed from. First off, it feels weird that Abby would seek her revenge on Joel the moment he and his brother saved her from the infected, even considering the hatred she has for him for killing her father about 5 years prior.
But then why would she brutally beat Joel? From the gameplay we play as Abby later on she doesn't feel like a person that would have so much pent-up rage. Moreover, why keep Ellie and Tommy alive? Abby and Co. can't seriously believe that those two wouldn't want to get their own revenge, especially for how brutally Joel was killed. I reiterate the fact that Joel was brutally killed because none of us wanted Joel to die that way, we wanted a heroic death if anything (on a side note the brutality of Joel's does set a good tone for the type of gore we would expect later on). However, what some of us might have forgotten or neglected to realise, that the game does explore through Ellie and Abby is that Joel's action at the end of TLOU was monstrous. He effectively sacrificed the lives of many for his surrogate daughter. This is a point that the game wants us to have when balancing the moral ambiguities between Ellie and Abby, but again throughout the game, we get introduced to groups of people like the Seraphites and slave traders, undermining Joel's decision.
So then what, surely it would be better to save what loved ones you have in a world where only a small proportion of the people left are actually worth saving.

I could go on but this contentious point on Joel's death was what I wanted to focus on. Overall, TLOU2 had great potential, I applaud the writers at least for their gall to create something like this but unfortunately, they miserably missed their mark.

    What a mess!

I never thought a game would disappoint me so much that I would come and leave a detailed review. I spent 30 hours playing The Last of Us Par 2 and I did not enjoy them.

Following an amazing game that was The Last of Us, this game falls short. To start off the players are not given a multiplayer mode which would have not changed the review but it would have been better than to just leave us with the bitter taste that ending was. This game takes a story approach that I have not seen any game/movie done successful in a long time. Joel, the main protagonist of the first game was no saint and some can argue he saw it coming, but how many parents did he and Ellie killed while in their quest? Even now in the second game, Ellie becomes a mythical beast just killing anyone in her sight. Joel deserved a better death. As a player what really bothered me was killing Joel and making me play as the killer for half of the game. Why ? On top of that the director of this game thinks that while we play as her we will forgive her. This game even makes Ellie look like a villain. I lost count on how many times I let Ellie put a bullet in Abby's head to get some type of satisfaction out of the whole encounter. This game had no identity and did not know what to do with its characters. The game also introduces idiotic side characters that you only want to avoid. I have no issue with Ellie being lesbian or Abby being built like a wrestler. I actually liked they did not have the generic type of character. I did have an issue as to why the game had to force a love triangle with the two characters it had. Funny enough they all end dead except Dina which was my least favorite side character.

I would have loved if this game would have let me the player make choices and my choices had consequences in the story. The developers had plenty of time to develop this game. The graphics show the true potential of the PlayStation 4. I played it with the basic edition and still ran amazing. The gameplay was almost the same as the first one except they added some small mechanics that changed the formula a bit.

Overall, I feel disappointed. The game is not as bad as most people make it look like here, however, the game is not a masterpiece either.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game doesn't deserve the 10's it is getting, nor does it deserve the 0-2's it is getting. First off, this game has to be the best looking game I have EVER played, along with having top tier animations and voice acting. No one can take away how visually appealing this game looks and how good it plays. Besides all these great things, there are many issues with this game that mostly come from the story and minor things that come from the gameplay. The gameplay was very fun as expected, but needed a little bit more variety due to the length of the game just to mix things up a little. So let's talk about the story... I can admit ND tried to create an interesting/compelling story which conveyed an important message, but in doing so they sadly fell on their face. Through trying to tell this story, you end up spending a lot of time with characters who you do not care about at all. I bought this game because I cared about Ellie and Joel and their relationship, not to play as new a character who I barely have a connection with. The harsh truth is we don't care about Abby and her backstory enough to play almost 12 hours with. The way I see it is, any story where you play the whole thing as either Ellie or Joel would have a much more enjoyable game to play. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us" original me habia dejado.

The the ending is unbelievably depressing and the player is left feeling very unsatisfied, which might have actually been the point. Whether it was the point or not doesn't matter though, the ending just makes you feel like crap and that's never a good thing. Mechanics, graphics and gameplay-wise the game was solid, much better than the original, but the story just isn't there. Killing off most of the favorite characters and leaving others with nothing is NOT a good way to achieve depth. The hope we were left with at the end of the first game is nonexistent at the end of this one. I expected much more, and much better from a studio like Naughty Dog. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Abby was a Mistake.
So Abby kills Joel in the first 2 hours of the game and makes you and Ellie hate her and want revenge. Joel, by the way, is arguably one of the most humanized father figures in gaming. In the original, we see Joel go from a loving father to a cold-hearted survivor, and through his connection with Ellie we see him develop into a loving father figure again. The entire 1st game had an underlining message of hope, and I remember hearing that hope was the theme for the first game and that hate was going to be the theme for this game, but they did not deliver on this in trying so hard to make you feel empathetic towards Abby.

The 10 hours spent playing with Abby is a failed attempt to make you feel empathy for a character that murders Joel because Joel murders Abby’s father. Not to mention that Abby’s father held a knife up to Joel when Joel entered the surgery room.

The thing about Abby’s sad story is that most fans of Joel and the 1st game could care less about Abby’s sad story. At most, Abby gets a sarcastic “boo-hoo” and afterwards players are still itching to kill her. If we have learned anything about The Last of Us’ world, it is that everybody in this world has a sad story. Trying to get players to have sympathy for this character in a world full of sad stories was a stretch.

In this world people are forced to choose sides and most fans of the first game have chosen the side of Joel and Ellie. Choosing Joel and Ellie’s side does not mean that we don’t recognize that there are two sides of any conflict or that we agree with Joel and Ellie in all their moral decisions. Choosing their side in this world means that despite their flaws we choose to care about their sad story above all others and we give them leeway to make unmoral decisions in a world that clearly lacks morality. That’s why even if some fans agree that Joel was wrong for saving Ellie and killing the doctor, most fans cannot feel sympathy for Abby because we are fully on Joel and Ellie’s side despite their lack of moral clarity.

The game tries too hard and wastes too much time trying to make you feel something for Abby, and this is where I think some critics miss what fans are pointing out. I agree that it was a risk, gamble, and ambitious to take this route for TLOU2. I have never played a game that tried so hard to make you not only understand but identify with the antagonist’s point of view. I give the developers credit for the try, but fans are correct to point out that they missed the mark completely and I am not sure they could ever make fans who have chosen Joel and Ellie’s side feel bad for Abby. For sure we felt bad for Yara and Lev. We felt horrible for Yara giving her life for Abby. We even read the notes scattered through the abandoned buildings and feel sympathy for the victims in the notes. But Yara and Lev and the other victims you read about have not killed Joel and they are not in conflict with the side we have chosen to back.

The main problem with playing with Abby as fans of the first game is that we feel forced to play with a character we do not feel any connection with for 10 hours. Fans of this title understand that Abby has a sad story, of course she does, everybody in this world has a sad story. Developers thought they could make you feel something for Abby by showing her dad die, showing her focus on training above relationships, showing her help some kids, and showing her get captured and put into slavery. Players on the other hand look at this world as a dog eat dog world and fans of TLOU simply don’t care if Joel wronged Abby or that Abby suffered. The game tries to make you question who the real bad guys are, but for fans its clear through the whole game; Abby is the bad guy and needs to be taken down.

I was not as upset as some by Ellie not killing Abby. I did want Ellie to kill Abby, and if given the choice I would have killed Abby. But again, as a fan of TLOU, I have chosen to care about and support Ellie’s decision, because I care more about her than Abby’s life.

After thinking about this game and seeing the conflict between the WLF and SCARS, I really wish the story could have involved a war between Jackson and some faction like the WLF. They could have shown negotiations breakdown between clans. A war could have broken out. Abby could be in the game and she can still kill Joel, but maybe she realizes during the war that Joel is the same guy that killed her father. Maybe they could have let you play with Joel for a couple of hours before killing him. Jackson could lose the war and be forced to move, and Ellie could have come back for vengeance after her people were safe. Something where we are told about Abby’s story, but not expected to really feel bad for her, because that didn’t work. A war would also have accounted for all the killing throughout the game.

Sorry one last gripe – Not one person gets infected

The biggest issue remains with the story. The story is definitely not good. It is inconsistent with what has been shown previously regarding the characters we have come to know and love in the previous game. The worst part, however, is how the game has cheap attempts to make you feel bad about the people or the animals you kill whilst forcing you to kill them. It's a horrible misinterpretation of what it means to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. Abby is an insult to the gamers. She is the worst character, nobody likes her, nobody can identify with her. She is just another example of badly written female characters imposing unrealistic body standards to women. And to add salt to the injury, we don't even get the satisfaction of killing her as Ellie by the end of the game. This game is not a 0/10, but it is definitely not a 10/10 like most "critics" seem to pretend. This game is nothing special, it is just average. A 6/10, maybe a 7/10 if you can really get into it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At the end of The Last of Us 1 I killed for Ellie. Me, not Joel. The doctor who was killing her for a greater good surrendered to me and I shooted at him without a second of hesitation just to save my little girl's life. Months later I was still thinking in that, asking my real self questions I've still asking sometimes. I ended loving Ellie and her relationship with Joel (me). She was my "kiddo".

Now this feeling is gone like ashes in the wind. I've witnessed her happily murder hundreds of people in a pointless journey for a fuzzy revenge proposal. I really don't care at all she being LGTBI. I strongly encourage games and movies to visibilize LGTBI people. People complaining about that are just a bunch of **** And, in the glorious first promising moments of the TLOU2, I really enjoyed the developers including such circumstance.

However, in this journey, Ellie's motivations aren't clear, the surrounding characters lack in depth and the game does not produce any emotional connection with them. The oriental you-die-for-sure guy or Ellie's partner (I didn't bother to learn their names) are just plain.

I really liked the dead of Joel in the beggining of the story. Really. I also I think is not a reason strong enough to turn my kid Ellie into the fusion of John Wick, a T-800 and some random revenge-seeker Liam Neeson's character.

Then I hated every second played with Abby. Maybe if she just have had Joel killed but not tortured... but it was way too much since the beginning. She was right in killing Joel, but I wanted her dead. Hands down.

It is like if, playing as Aragorn in the battle of the Pelenor fields, you would stop the movie for 10 hours to show the poor and pitifull youth of Sauron some years ago to empathize with him.

I'm sorry because I really tried to, but I only found TLOU2 OKish. As Game of Thrones discovered one year ago, bad and rushed storytelling could ruin the best of the plots.

Oh, and I hated, REALLY HATED to must kill the dogs and the few enemies that surrendered to me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Does the story suffer from poor writing? or Is it a story that you don't like?

I believe The Last of Us 2 has suffered from both, but more definitely the latter. This is a story that people (including me) don't like. The storytelling wouldn't be under such scrutiny if the story itself was something that we appreciated. I can not critisize the game for its amazing graphics, world creation, and gameplay. It's a beautifully made game. However, with the Last of Us. It's the STORY that matters most. And this is where Naughty Dog left most of it's players upset and exhausted. (FYI, I was blessed not to have to anything spoiled for me prior to playing this game.)

I would like to state that it seems that players who like the game are claiming that MOST of the gamers who dislike TLOU2, dislike it because of LGBTQ representation and main female character. While I would say there are definitely a lot of bigots who are leaving reviews, i believe it is unfair to generalize. Many gamers praise Naughty God for its intention with diversity, but still feel cheated by the story. Especially fans of The Oringal The Last of Us. This game was a long and depressing ride. If you liked the first one, be prepared to be heartbroken.

Naughty Dog seems to have underestimated how much the fans connected with Joel and Ellie from the first game. Not just the characters, but the relationship they developed. You feel for them. You root for them as you see them protect and fight for each other. TLOU2 very swiftly destroyed Joel and Ellie's relationship, killed Joel, and turned Ellie into a broken revenge addict. This is where fans may not like the story. For fair reason. Naughty Dog seemed to disregard why Fans liked the first game for the sake of telling a risky and emotionally draining story. It was not a pleasant experience for the fan and that should make the developers think. However, the game does make you think and ponder upon some of the deeper themes the story makes you ask. I dislike the story, but cannot say It is a story that lacks depth. I dislike the story, but that does not mean it's a "bad" story.

Now the storytelling... Where the story telling fails is regarding Abby. While I still cannot imagine sympathizing with her at all, I believe telling a little bit more of her story in the beginning of the game and fleshing that out... would have helped naughty dog achieve what they wanted. Which is for the player to connect with Abby. This was not done... and it left me personally, wanting to quickly finish the Abby parts to get back to Ellie's narrative. However, quickly finding out that Abby's story keeps going. I was waiting and expecting a switch back to Ellie in the boss fight where you play as Abby, and was subsequently disgusted that the studio had me play a character I didn't like... to beat up a character I was rooting for.

All in all. I have mixed feelings. As any gamer would by the end of the game. A dark, depressing, rollercoaster. I just hope that if there is a part 3. That we do not play as Abby for the majority of it. 6/10

The game's entire length is not justified by its content by including drawn out sections that could have theoretically worked in delivering its themes but hurts the narrative's pacing in practice.

The characters, while brilliantly acted with impeccable nuance, are tragically unlikable; an observation that could be attributed to flaws in writing. There is no chemistry between Ellie and Dinah and this permeates to the rest of the character relationships as well.

The game at least plays better than the first though, but that's not exactly a surprising thing to see. It could have benefited from a few more gameplay innovations though as the gap between the two games feels less than the actual seven-year distance it has.

But the strongest detriment that ruined my experience is how jarring the narrative dissonance in contrast to its gameplay. For a game that has elevated in technicality that borders on the uncanny valley of realism, to see characters display emotions only in cutscenes and not in gameplay is deeply off-putting and instantly shatters thematic consistency. I hoped that by this time, Naughty Dog - who are well-known as crafted story-tellers in this medium - should have found the way to resolved this ever-living conflict. But I guess we're still far off from that.

The combat system seemed a bit better and refreshing from the first one. The thing that killed it for me was the story, it seemed to lose it's way and kinda jumped all over the place and tried to force a narrative that really had nothing to do with what made the game great in the first place. Overall if you don't mind a mind numbing story and the game doing beloved characters wrong then I think you will enjoy a beautiful world with with great back ground lore and a refreshing fun combat system. The game really leaves mixed feelings. From a technical standpoint, it's hands down stunning. The graphics, level design, sound, and music - it's all amazing. The gameplay essentially copies that of the first game with few additions and thus feels a bit dusted, but still for the most part enjoyable.

The main sticking point is of course the story. It's not a terrible one, but I have 2 major issues with it. First, the message it tries to bring across is too grim and dark and completely contrasts with that of the first game. The world of Last of Us is already a bleak and dark place and making a story as dark and brutal as this one is just not something any of us needed. The first game is much better in this regard. It also tackles dark complex themes but conveys a feeling of hope in the end. Last of Us 2 has none of that and leaves the player emotionally exhausted and downright miserable.

What's much worse though, is the way the story is told. In the end, if that's the kind of story they wanted to tell, that's up to Naughty Dog. It could still be a great one, if done properly. Alas, it's not. The way it's structured is just bad. You don't introduce new characters by showing them do something terrible and then trying hard to show that 'hey, they're not that bad after all'. This just doesn't work and kills the enjoyment in the latter part of the game. Also, all the characters in the game are bleak, even the main ones. We got to know Ellie really well in the first game, but we get very little info about the kind of person she is now in this one. She does the things she does without a real explanation or rationale (other than a very simplistic 'they ate my foods, imma kill all of them now').

The other characters are even worse. They are sort of just there. They don't get much of a backstory and are simply too one-sided boring and downright unlikeable.

The end result is a grueling 30-hour storyline that is technically amazing, but also the one that no one really wanted or needed and that leaves a bitter aftertaste simple because it could've AND should've been so much more.

When the game was firstly announced i was thrilled and could not wait a second more to get my hands on it. The first game was a masterpiece storywise, despite having clunky controls and mechanics. Until the last of us part 2 was launched i managed to steer clear of any story leaks because i wanted to enjoy the game at its full potential. Unlike other reviews out there, i fully completed the game so i consider my review to be relevant.
The last of us part 2 is a disappointment in the only area that mattered - STORY. After playing the first installment you will realize how smoothly and realistic the relationship between Ellie and Joel becomes throughout the game. Every character in the first game is well written and even if he has little time screen, he is still well drawn. In the sequel, all the chemistry is lost. I reckon that by now everyone has either played or watched someone play the last of us part 2 so people know that Joel dies in the worst way possible. I think that Neil Druckmann does not understand the fury of the fans: its not that they killed Joel, but his death felt like the work of someone who got bored of writing and just wanted to be done with it. The moment is sudden, does not fit with what gamers expected and it absolutely does not fit with how we know Joel would act in that instance.
I know that Neil called his fans bigots because he thinks that the whole population is against lesbianism; most of us allready knew from the "Left Behind" DLC that Ellie had different views and we had no problem with that, mostly because the way it was presented made sense and did not feel forced. In TLOU2 you are forced to play with Dina as a sidekick because the producer wanted to show us the difficulty of being a same sex couple in a world that never exists in real life. There were hundreds of different ways to send this message without feeling force fed to us. As a matter of fact, i didn't even like Dina that much because it always felt like her dramas were everyone's dramas.
There are not all negatives of course: the game mechanics are an improvement from the first game, graphics are top notch and the overall feeling of the surrounding world and how you interact with it is great. Unfortunately this is all the positives i have to say about this game. The game was too long and considering that this is not a Rockstar production then i don't see a point in making a 20-30 hour long story. Abby's story was not nearly as bad as people critic it but I think playing as her is unnecessary. What they tried to do in her side of the story is connect her with another character the same way as Joel and Ellie connected. I would call this a dualism as both stories flow the same way (main protagonist finds a sidekick that he/she cares about, they go on an adventure riddled with obstacles and so on). i would also call this laziness in writing but I acknowledge the fact that I might be wrong.
The ending is where the biggest difference is made. Had it not been for it, the game would have been a 7, or even an 8, but how the story finishes is just awful. It again feels as if they were taking too long to finish the game and just wanted to be over with. The developers wanted to make us understand that violence gets us nowhere and they are right, but not in a video-game. If i play something i want to do stuff that i wouldn't in the real world. So to put me in the middle of a fight and then stop because Ellie's conscious kicked in is just stupid and anti-climactic.
Last but not least I despise how Ellie is depicted - it feels totally out of place; from the girl that had funny remarks when faced with death, she turned into a regretting, sobbing character that feels as if she gave up. The most annoying part is near the end, where she has been drawn to resemble a hillbilly. She looks as if she drinks during the day and smokes near children. Yikes. Honestly she looks as if she gave up on life just to raise a child. Furthermore she dresses like she is about to go to a country festival in a beat up town.
To conclude, i think that there is still room to recover from this huge blow. What needs to be done is to fire that smug faced Druckmann, and go and beg Bruce Straley to come back and direct. If NaughtyDog wants to be the game-studio of choice for the consumers, then it should do as the consumer directs and not think about being politically correct. Even though there are many more to say ( like miss-directing the customer through advertising or how they said you don't have to kill a dog but you still have to) I think that this game is a total let-down. If the first game's story was all about "It can't be all for nothing" The Last of Us 2 story's is "it is all for nothing". Overall the game deserves a 6 out of 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let’s imagine there was NO part one of this game, we’re introduced to this new character Ellie who see’s her friend Joel getting killed and then sets on this journey to seek vengeance. We play as Ellie and then as Abby.. This game would probably get 8-8.5. It’s by no means a perfect game, but it’s fun, not too bad of a story, great graphics, fun combat. However, Playing this game after the original game is definitely a disappointment. We’ve already built a connection with Joel and Ellie, and now we see Joel getting killed and then Ellie losing everything at the end of the game AND on top of that have to play for 10 hours as the character the killed Joel and expecting us connect to her! It felt exhausting and pointless, I just didn’t care about Abby, no matter how many times I interacted with the dog or played as her when she was young or went to the hospital where her father was killed! I DID NOT CARE. SHE KILLED JOEL. I played through the original game at least 5 times, probably 10. I finished part 2 and will never touch it again, that sums up the difference between the experiences we go through. Considering all of the above, it’s still not fair to give the game a 2 or 3, it’s clearly a well done game (mostly) and that’s why it’s a 6 for me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 is not a bad game, it's just not a great one.
Visually, it's stunning, I have no idea how they got these kinds of visuals out of a PS4, the sound design is also fantastic and really added to the horror of the game at times. Both these things really help to sell the atmosphere of this bleak, miserable and destroyed world. But this is pretty much where my praise ends.

The gameplay though initially satisfying with vicious kill animations quickly gets stale when you realise that there is a single stealth take down animation and that this is just a 2013 PS3 game with a shiny new coat of paint, after 12 hours I was more then ready for it to end, but I was all too aware of the fact that this game boasts around 20 hours. I was similarly bored by the gameplay of the first game as the first time I played it was in 2019, however the story and characters made me stick around as I was engrossed in their struggle. And this is where the game's largest issues pop up.

THE CHARACTERS are just bad, they are not interesting, they are not enjoyable to see on screen, and when eventually I kill off he vilains I feel nothing as I know nothing about them, and the game knows this, that's why we get shock twists like 'she was pregenant, aren't you a monster'. My largest issues with the characters come with Ellie, I like Ellie, but not the Ellie you play, I like Journal Ellie, because now Ellie has a journal where she draws and writes down her thoughts amongst other things, but the Ellie in the journal and in-game Ellie feel like 2 completly different characters, because Journal Ellie says a lot about how she feels, but in-game Ellie never acutally shows it, they are 2 seperate entities. You get to learn more about the characters you slaughter later in the game where you play as Abby, and this was just an absolute slog, I did not care for abby and I did not care for any of her firends, which really did not help when I was supposed to feel bad for killing them.

The ending is also just a massive cliche like most of the story, I've seen this story before, I've seen it done far better before it's just a very generic revenge thriller.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
