This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I, like many am very disappointed with the sequel to my favorite game on the PS3. The story is not great, and while I get what the developers were trying to do, it does not resonate with me. Naughty Dog spent the entire previous game building Joel and Ellie into the characters that I know and love and successfully created that connection. Abby killing Joel 2 hours into the game was a shocking moment for me, as I had managed to avoid all spoilers leading into this. This is not my problem, it upset me but I kept my mind open that this would be the spark for a new impactful story. My problem is trying to shove a character down my throat after immediately making me hate her. Naughty Dog simply did not do a good enough job of making me like Abby, and being forced to play half the game as her is frustrating and ruined the experience for me. I simply wanted to rush through her chapters to get back to playing as Ellie, and that doesn't happen until near the end of the game. For this main reason, I cannot say I enjoyed my time playing this game. The story never has any pay off, and gives no real satisfaction when the credits roll. That being said, for me this is one of the best looking games I've played on this console. Cutscenes and game play look nearly identical, and the environments are gorgeous and well fleshed out. The combat and game play is excellent, and there are key differences between playing as Ellie and Abby that make each character a unique experience despite the shared mechanics. This game could have been the best game on this console, but the story severely hampers any chance of that. For Last of Us fans, still worth a play through to experience the story. I'm glad I played it, but I know I will never pick this up to play it again. Expand

Visually one of the best games to come to PS4, the gameplay is similar to original last of us game so that's good. Don't like the fact I was forced to play abby it's like rockstar forcing us to play micah in RDR2 and the story could of ended differently but overall it's good.

Honestly not that bad, but with the way the review companies are talking about the game, it does come off as utter nonsense. My main issue is with how bad the story telling is, for a AAA company like Naughty Dog, who specializes in story based games, this game is a total train-wreck in terms of storytelling. The actual story itself isn't super new or unique, but that doesn't mean it's devastatingly bad either.

I won't go in dept as i have better things to do, but a summarized version of what would've been better: storytelling that doesn't feel all over the place and random, instead a rather linear but conflicting story-line between the two protagonists (which honestly felt like what the game was trying to do but failed miserably), not killing off main and side characters just for that 'wow' effect (some scenes felt like they were being violent for the sake of being violent, and don't actually contribute to the plot or anything), not killing off main characters super early and then forcing them back in through flashbacks (this allows for proper pacing to develop your character and make their death have a larger impact, writing 101 i guess), reworking that ending entirely as it is not thoroughly justified at all, properly try to develop characters and not force players to empathize with some of them. There are more things i could nitpick, but like i said my main issue was the junior level storytelling.
Overall i rate this game a 'meh' out of 10.
Also, have to get in my obligatory "Joel-in-One, Bigot Sandwiches".

A potentially unique and visceral story unfortunately executed slightly poorly with brave narrative choices falling short of their desired effect. Lots of subverting expectations and shocking imagery to raise the players heart rate and create despair. Unfortunately this method of storytelling while having an immediate and extreme reactionary affect on the audience will inevitably fail to move anyone in any meaningful or lasting way. Thus while there are some truly stunning moments it fails to achieve the lasting impression that part 1 did. While it is understood that part 2 is trying to achieve different things. As for the narrative is a 5 at most, the rhythm is cut every 5 hours of play, NO ONE can empathize with ABBY, who has no other function than to kill Joel and repel Ellie's attacks ... Honestly, I wasn’t a huge fan of the first. It was one of the first PS3 games I can remember buying. I kept waiting for some sort of transcendent moment to happen during my playthrough but one never did. Many others disagreed, and The Last of Us is now cited as among the best games of all time. At first I wasn’t planning on playing the sequel. However, after seeing the leaks, the excessive DMCA takedowns, and the controversy surrounding certain plot elements I was starting to get intrigued. Since there are no new movies coming out, The Last of Us Part II is the closest 2020 has to a proper summer blockbuster, so why wouldn’t I want to play the hot new game and give my take on it?

While the original was a relatively linear plotline, Part II has a considerably more complex narrative structure. On paper, the storyline is brilliant, as it asks us to consider the consequences of violence and the multiple sides to every story. What one person may see as justified is a heinous act in another person’s eyes. It asks us to look beyond mere notions of people being “good” or “evil”. However, the way in which the game goes about exploring this is suspect, to say the least. The story is leaden with so many flashbacks, parallel events, and perspective shifts that the story is at times difficult to follow and the pacing suffers. Since The Last of Us Part II can no longer rely on the shock of a new franchise, this kind of storytelling feels like trying to compensate for having to be a sequel. The only option is to go bigger, louder, messier, gorier, and raunchier, and not every idea is a good one. It’s also a hefty game in terms of its length, clocking in at anywhere from 25-30 hours. It’s by far the longest game Naughty Dog has ever made.

The Last of Us Part II does not offer a dramatic departure in gameplay from its predecessor, yet its tone and themes couldn’t be more different. Part II tells one of the medium’s most ambitious stories to date, but boy is it messy. It’s the messy and sprawling nature that makes it a fascinating game, though definitely not a masterpiece like most critics claim. It’s too deliberately imperfect and misshapen for that. It’s the kind of game that for better or worse will have people debating its story decisions for months, if not years to come, and it’s bound to be a cultural lightning rod given the lack of new movies coming this year.

Love and hate: two sides of the same coin.

He played at a high level, but it felt like a simple one. For me, the world of this game has remained only in the first part. The worst thing is that if Sony continues to maintain such a policy, then perhaps we should fear for the continuation of other excellent titles. And without that, a few blocks of good story games with AAA graphics will become even poorer. Expand

The story can be described as "realistic" I suppose, but there were so many contradictory moments; were the writers that lazy, or were they really trying to pass a C+ movie off as a game?

Story line aside, the fighting mechanics were fun albeit repetitive and a little silly at times. Dodging and having a prone position were beneficial additions to the game, and yet players still crafted the basic items from the first game (molotov, shiv, med kit, bomb) with the same play style. The upgrades and skill trees were pretty pointless in the end, which was frustrating because we spent so much time gathering those resources only to find out that you may not even need to fight at all (running to the next cutscene). It would be nice if there wasn't always a "whew, I think that's it" dialogue prompt to state that you killed all the enemies in the area. That felt a little campy for a game that was trying to have a story line that was as realistic as possible. Lastly, the game did feel about 5 hours too long. The more time dragged on, the less attention we put into reading notes and enjoying the environment, because the story line became the linear spine of the game.

The music was well enjoyed through the levels, and the graphics were beautiful, which I'm sure most people agree with, so there isn't much more to say on that. All politics aside, and just taking the game for face value, it was okay, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first and I wouldn't enjoy replaying it. Also, I hope multiplayer comes out, because that was my favorite aspect of the first.

Taking all that melodrama apart, and after thinking with a clear head how would I rate this game is that not even the amazing graphics, extremely enjoyable game play and mechanics and the enormous appreciation for the level of detail in this game is enough to counterweight the really big flaw of the story, the character development, the order of the events and the unnecessary forced ideologies.

For Christ sake we the fans grew to love the connection that was developed between Joel and Ellie and within the first two hours of the second game you take that completely away. All the character development of Joel being a survivor is flushed into the toilet...

This game deserves all the praise for the people that took care about the animations, the graphics, the cut-scenes, the mechanics and the gameplay. Naughty dog has a quality signature in this regard.

However a big and I mean BIG failure this time was on the narrative and the story telling.

It is heartbreaking that such an amazing story from part one was completely ruined by the second part, and that this is pretty much unfixable. I now look at the story in a negative light.... Heck I am not even excited for the show being produced by HBO. Not anymore.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright, so i just finished the game, but let me start from when i started the game. i thought, "hm why are people hating this so much?", then Joel died, and in a not very cool way. I though that sucks, but, i also saw why they did it like that. They wanted to take the Hero off of his pedestal, and destroyed him, very literally. I thought it made sense, they want the audience to feel the same as Ellie. It made me want revenge just like it made Ellie want revenge, i personally thought that was fantastic. Then while playing as Ellie i loved the graphics, i enjoyed the game play, i liked the sneaking, and i liked the suspenseful moments. They could have worked on a lot of the person to person interactions, to me a lot of it seemed awkward and through a lot of the flashbacks i kept seeing a weaker Joel, a Joel who cowered i fear of Ellie at all times. He was meek whenever Abby was around. I disliked that, in the second game, and some flashbacks that went back to before they had the bust up, he could quip back at her and wasn't passive. I also didn't like having to play as the enemy... it didn't humanize them to me, it made me hate them more, i hated playing with Abby, Owen etc. I see what they wanted to do from a narrative perspective, they wanted to show that the enemy inst so different from the character we love, which is fine, but i didn't like it. I like that we saw JJ, Dina and Ellie live happily in the house, but i hate that Ellie couldn't let it go for Dina, and lastly that Dina was gone when Ellie came back, more on that later. When Ellie then leaves i do not like that we have to save Abby to then fight her, to then let her leave again. I wanted to kill Abby, we traveled far to kill Abby, so let me **** kill her, that mercy **** sucked, the little flashback to Joel that makes her think he wouldn't like this is dumb, she was having PTSD about seeing Joel die and now she grows a conscience out of no where? Screw that i want Abby to drown. When we get back Dina and JJ are gone, everything is gone, Ellie stuff is packed into one room, and we then play the guitar, only to learn she cant, because Abby bit two fingers off Ellie in the fight. Then we have a flashback to Joel and Ellie sorta reconciling after their feud, which was good because a lot of the flashback implied a lot of tension, but the last flashback showed the still loved each other and wanted to reconcile. But what i HATE, absolutely despise, is that we didn't get to see Dina and JJ again, they built up the living together part and the leaving scene was so dramatic, i wanted to see them make up and walk together into Jackson as the gates close. Or at least have it as a post credit scene. Its a fine game, i had fun, but the thing i hate the most, is not killing Abby, and not seeing Dina again.

To who ever has read all of that, thank you for listening to my opinion, and have a nice day.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, well, well. For the past 7 years, I have never wanted anything as badly as I wanted a TLOU sequel. Nothing at all. It was my favorite game of all time, apart from Bioshock, and I gotta say, I'm disappointed. The scenery and the graphics are all gorgeous. The gameplay was basically the same as last time around, which I have no problem with. But the story? The story was a gut punch. Kudos to the dev team for wanting to try something different, I have no problem with that and I respect their choice to do so. Killing Joel was a perfectly fine way to go, I think that idea was good for the overall story and furthering Ellie's story. But man, after 7 years of waiting to keep going along for the ride with Ellie and all the promotional stuff leading us to believe we were in it for the long haul with Ellie, boom, HALF OF THE STORY FOLLOWS THE WOMAN WHO KILLED THE (albeit terrible human being) MAN WE LOVED. That's why this game disappointed me. Was Abby's story empathic and a cool twist that we weren't expecting? Of course. I have no issue with dabbling in that territory. But good lord, for half of the game? A game that was what, 30 hours long? Nope, sorry that ain't it chief. Cut a 3rd of the game out, let Ellie get her revenge (or let her live like she did in the game, I don't care), and then let's move on and give Ellie more to do. More to overcome, more to grow in her new post-Joel life with Dina. Do I understand Abby and her motivations? Yes. Was her storyline with Lev endearing? Yes. Do I care about it? No, not really. This was supposed to be Ellie's story and it ended up being half her story. It was a new and ambitious way to tell a story, but to me personally, it just didn't really hit. I could never bring myself to really care about Abby's character. I'm 1000% envious of the people who could really get into her character and loved her and loved that story dynamic, and maybe I will too after another play-through or two. But my instant feelings are one of disappointment, but that's just one humble mans opinion. Oh, and to all the people bashing the game over its LGBTQ inclusion, 2 female leads or anything stupid like that, it's 2020. Grow up already. Dislike the game for real reasons, not bigoted, idiotic ones. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm glad I was able to finish this game, sold my copy early, getting most of my money back. Sure the graphics team, level designers, programmers, animators, sound designers, and many other artist and talented people did amazing job. When the game looks, plays and sounds this great it really shows what it lacks. And to me it was all the charm and magic of the first game. instead there was too much unnecessary gore and violence, forced narrative. Plot structure was all over the place. Some of the better parts were the flashbacks, but there was too many. And the swap of the characters halfway didn't make it for me. Shock value, yes, there was a lot of shocking twists, but none of real substance or importance to make me connect with new characters. And since most new characters died, it felt pointless in the end. I was asking myself, Why? And the ending perhaps most disappointing of the entire story. Well crafted game overall, but characters and plot severely lacking polish that you can find in other AAA titles. 6/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m writing my review here because both subreddits of the last of us have become both massive circlejerks and it’s really hard to voice out your opinion without being attacked.

I think this game did a lot of things right. The graphics are top notch and although the game mechanics seem slightly dated it rarely took away from the experience and thrill while playing. Even the story had its good moments despite being a pretty predictable revenge plot whose moral of the story is: “Revenge Bad”. With a few tweaks here and there and it would have definitely be a 10/10 game.

With that being said, there a few points while playing where I felt absolutely miserable. I have no problem with Abby’s figure or character at all but after she killed Joel it just made it really hard for me to have any connection with her. So playing through it for 10 hours seemed like drag. Also when Ellie coming back to try and kill Abby again and losing everything in the process seemed a little excessive and didn’t make any sense whatsoever. I get both characters who gave in to revenge lost a lot but I think Ellie lost far more than Abby has which seemed just really off putting. Of course if Ellie did kill Abby there wouldn’t be a point to the story it’ll just be a borderline misery-porn where nothing is learnt or nothing has a point.

Of course the elephant in the room and I think why most people were upset was Joel’s death. But personally, I don’t have a problem with him dying at all. From the story standpoint, it didn’t make sense for anyone else to get killed for a story to be told. The problem is the way it was executed. He didn’t go out with a bang or protecting the people he cares for, he died in such a pathetic and helpless manner. In my opinion, Joel deserved a better death than that. It was more like he was a plot device more than a character which is such a disrespect to probably one of the most well written characters in the past decade. This isn’t the only instance where a good character gets killed in such a pathetic way: Jesse didn’t even get to fight back before he gets **** in the face. It’s pretty sad way to go when he was a good representation for Asians in gaming, as he wasn’t a walking stereotype.

Many people claim there was an agenda in this game. Personally, I don’t have a problem with it. I like that Abby is a physically strong female character and I like the lgbtq+ representation. It’s good and progressive. If your giving a bad review based on such trivial things you should probably just grow up. There is some pretty sad excuses for representation in this game though. The main examples are a Latino guy named Manny who repeats the word “Pendejo” And “Puta” like a damn Pokemon. It’s just a pretty dated stereotype for a Latino guy to be hot tempered and say those words, so it pretty sad for a game to tries so hard to be progressive to make such a mishap. Overall, I think this game isn’t as bad as people made it out to be not is it as good and that’s such a shame for a Follow up to one of the best games of the past decade.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m not bashing the idea of killing off Joel, it was a good idea and a different theme from the first game. But they executed that idea very poorly and literally killed off the main character of the first game like he was nothing. How he died was a huge mistake and so was when. Everyone in the game, including ellie, felt like such a dreary and boring character. They killed everyone off as if they didn’t even matter so by the end of the game I was still wondering who Manny was. It felt so dull when Abby shot Jesse like he wasn’t the baby daddy of Dinas kid. What the hell Neil druckmann. It’s not even that it’s a bad game, overall the graphics are pretty good though there are a few glitches, it still irks me just how **** the storyline ended up being. 7 years of waiting for a hot pile of garbage. Though the game overall is nowhere near a 0, it definitely doesn’t deserve a 10/10. I’d give it a 6 for being such an average game. If you’re a fan of the last of us part 1, then the second game really shows just how bad the writers did on the second game compared. I almost wish they left it with the first one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where to begin. Last of us part 2 undid what the first one accomplished: good story, excellent character development, a father/daughter relationship between Joel and Ellie. Keep in mind I did see the leaks and I knew how the story would go but it's totally different seeing it play out. Some of thing I will say people will not agree with but keep in mind this is just a game and not real life. As soon as abby killed Joel I was mad and filled with rage. Soon as I started my journey for revenge you have no idea how bad I wanted to make abby suffer. Soon as we do confront abby as ellie that's where things went downhill for me. We play as abby for what felt like forever. Just for the heck of it I just let her fall off a ledge or let the infected have their way with her. I even let ellie kill her multiple times. Yes, you have to fight ellie as abby and that is not cool. Like many of you out there I didnt care about abby or why she killed Joel. Soon as she killed Joel I wanted her dead. Going back to ellie, there are times where she becomes dark like when she killed nora. You have no idea how satisfying that was for me. Or when she killed mel. Ellie only defended herself and she had no idea mel was pregnant but that didnt phase me. Her fault for attacking ellie in the first place. I felt no guilt in killing dogs who were trying to kill me. Kill or be killed. For the most part this game is my element. However it was all ruined in the final part. You get to fight abby as ellie and she let her go. I killed all these people with no hesitation and I can't kill the one person that started this journey of mine. Story should have ended when you saw them at the farm. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The graphics are amazing it is amazing how much naughty dog is able to has bee able to do with only a couple years breathtaking!

The mechanics feel good and the crafting feels better then ever however I feel that crafting cost way too materials you need to have I only managed to craft very few things in the very long run time and it was very annoying having to start again with different weapons

Now the game play gun mechanics are smooth its so satisfying to beat a solider to death with a crowbar and blow off someone head with a shotgun BUT the encounters are very repetitive and the design is very confusing and aggravating. The infected are just terrifying I always try my best to be stealthy around them. One last thing is that I think that it was very idiotic for Naughty Dog to not give us a full auto gun until the end of the game AGAIN but overall I liked the game-play and It is much better then the first one
    Overall 8/10.

Now The Story........ buckle up because I have a lot to say about this

In my completely Bias opinion the story is a complete DISASTER insulting the first one everyone adored with all their hearts while giving us character I COULD NOT GIVE A **** ABOUT

where do I start where do I even begin I know lets start of with the greatest insult Joel and how he is handled instead of giving him an emotional send off like he deserves we decide to just ****ing beat him to death with a ****ing GOLF CLUB like not even just shooting him and being done And I will talk about the person who did this later

The main reason this game failed was of the structure and how embarrassing it is who taught it would be a good idea to play halfway of the game as Ellie and then decide to play the next half as Abby like are you ****ing kidding me

we are going to talk about Ellie my favorite character of this **** while she is nothing like she used to be she definitely has the best ark of her slowly losing her herself the deeper she goes into to Seattle and if the story put that as there main focus this review would of been a lot different BUT when you have TEN HOURS of ****ing dumb ass Abby **** you really begin to lose interest in well...... just about everything still...... of the game saves it from being the worst game story I have ever experienced.

Now...... we come to Abby the bane of my existence now before we come to tearing her apart I will give naughty dog points for even trying to get you to sympathize with her but they did it so badly and the main reason is that Abby never shows any remorse for killing Joel so how are we supposed to sympathize with her if she is never sorry for her bad action and yeah you could say " well Joel stopped the fireflies from creating a cure to save Ellie and never felt sorry " the big difference is that Joel killed out of love Abby did for Revenge and once again you could say "Ellie killed for revenge just as Abby did" however Ellie does show remorse for the people she killed and Abby didn't and her story is so boring but that not the character Abby's fault its something far worse...........

Now we come to the side character and they are terrible Dina is okay I guess but she does not interest me more then a horse buddy I can't tell you a damn thing about Jesse because he is not given enough character development, I really thought Tommy would be a huge part of the game but if you removed him there would be no difference, Lev and Yara are the worst characters I have ever played in a video game they are so boring and annoying constantly wasting your time one of them is a tranny imagine being in a Zombie apocalypse and being like "I'm gonna just change my gender" I never forgot Sam and Henry, Bill, Tess and Tommy I forgot most of these ****ers names the minute I finished this embarrassment

The tone of this game is just mindless depression I always felt so disappointed while playing it felt like a Abby entire story line feels like a way to long walking dead episode while the first half i wasn't sure what to make of it the second half I just felt dead just wanting to finish the finish truly just disappointed

Some people think it a masterpiece some people think it strayed to far from its roots, me... I just think its **** I would of liked a depressing story but they ruined it with bad structure characters (apart from Ellie)
and so many plot holes the ending is insulting and dumb and all of you high and mighty **** who think people who don't like the game are just Bigots you are IDIOTS naughty dog has a lot of work to do to save this franchise

lowest ranking was in Abby Seattle day 1 was a two and the highest was in Ellie's Seattle day 2 was a seven but overall 4/10 And that being generous

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Casual player review.

26h 12min, this was the time it took me to finish the game and I haven't even reached 100%, I only got 149 collectibles in my first game. And, to be honest, I have the feeling of "I don't know if I would play again". The game is not bad, but neither is it a masterpiece.

Like Uncharted 4, TLOU part II is a linear game that flirts with the exploration of extensive maps, only that there are not many open areas to explore (which is a shame). And Naughty Dog is to be congratulated, the strongest point of the game is the setting of the scene (which is stunning, by the way).

The mechanics are almost the same as the first title, with the added feature of lying on the ground and dodge. And speaking of changes, three different factions (WLF’s, Seraphites / Scars and Rattlers) were added and two new types of infected were introduced, the Shamblers and the Rat King. As you can see, there are few additions.

The developer sold the idea of individualizing the NPC, making them talk to each other, respond better to the player's actions and, when their allies died, shout each other's names. Except that they were not careful to at least change the appearance of the NPC even in the most closed scenarios, I had the feeling of killing triplets (which broke the feeling of immersion). Individualization was a nice idea, but it was not done well.

Something that I must make clear, with respect to gameplay and that hindered my experience, the game eventually made me dizzy (even changing accessibility and using motion sickness control), so I was forced to take a break of at least 30 min to return to play. Which breaks the fluidity of the gameplay. I say more, I only continued to play because of the curiosity to see the outcome.

It is a story shaped by violence, and I was literally guided by the feeling of anger. The game fed me with hatred and then tried to add the feeling of empathy (which it did not, the story fueled my hatred in a way that, when it tried to show me another perspective, I didn't care about anything).

Keep your expectations low, so that you can have a better gaming experience. TLOU part II was made for you to get into the character's skin, to feel what he feels, but it is a very subjective field and the narrative does not always reflect the feelings of the player and character. That was the biggest sin in the game.

To conclude, the game in general is fun. I, who really like exploring the scenery, was a good experience. But the outcome of that story (what kept me playing), in the eyes of a guy who loves the first game, was disappointing. If the game had given the choice of outcome, had given the player agency, it would have been a totally different experience.

At first, I was not very interested in playing The Last of Us 2 because I knew that I would not overcome the first part, after listening to so many rumors I decided to embark on the trip, to be very unsatisfied at the end. I had a feeling similar to that of the end of GOT, from my point of view the story is not the strength of the game, I was shocked that after playing with the protagonist, the game forces you to play with the antagonist, the development of the game is Forced to the point that the game becomes too long and boring, I expected a more satisfying ending after 40 hours invested but that is not the case with TLOU2. Joel's death seemed poorly executed, mainly because you only play a few minutes with him, that the whole game is an endless quest for revenge I consider it very poor and mediocre from a creative point of view. The positive is that I have to praise the technical part of the game, the level designs are fantastic, the setting, the music, you definitely feel immersed in that universe. The graphics are from another generation, exploration was my favorite part of the game and I have enjoyed the game, especially the fighting. In conclusion, TLOU2 does not go beyond the first part and leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to the story and the characters, but it is not a bad game either. Final verdict: Average.

I feel like, you can make a game without killing a lot of "main" characters. They did in the first game, yet in this game writers goes basaltic. imagine growing up with your teddy bear and suddenly your mom throws it away, you `wouldn't be happy, right?

Finale was also anticlimax, feature no "real" morel message to the players/viewers. Some stuff was just unnecessarily for the story. This story is also heavily dependent on political views, specially about women and trans. In the first game, didn't have any kill able female characters (which is interesting).

Obviously you get confused, but you don’t want to upset customer. In the end your pancake is horrible, but you made your best effort to satisfy the customer.

It's a good game, but very bad writing, hope the writers realize how to write a story without being dependent on society moral and listen to their own hearts and how they feel like story should go.

    -Strong gameplay
    -Intelligent enemy AI
    -Stunning graphics
-Great sound design and visual effects
-Heartfelt flashbacks of Joel and Ellie

    CONS:
-Poorly written, one dimensional side characters
    -Convoluted story with odd pacing
    -Emotionally manipulative
    -Meaningless sex scene
-Hypocritical sense of morality between Abby and Ellie
    -Lack of engaging puzzles
-Transphobia is somehow present in a post apocalyptic world
-The ending It's hard to sympathize with Abby and play as her when she just killed a beloved character in the series. (Ex: If I pointed out a stranger and told you that the stranger was a child abductor, unless you're convinced otherwise, you will not see that stranger in the same light) In the same way, we are forced to play as a character we've already labeled as a cold, heartless killer. Trying to change our mind that she's a better person than we thought is a much more difficult feat to accomplish than just playing that character fresh with no labels attached.

With that being said, this game could have been so much better than what we've experienced. According to Neil Druckman, the game was initially planned to be open world and Abby's gameplay would be at the start of the game (BEFORE YOU KILL JOEL). This alone would have made the game much more palatable. (And would resolve the previous point made earlier about feeling like you're forced to play as Abby)

Neil Druckman could have given the players a choice: Kill Joel/Don't kill Joel and Kill Abby/Don't kill Abby. There could have been alternate endings.

Clearly the idea of morality in this game is hogwash. Abby kills Joel because he killed her dad even though Joel saved Abby in the past. You're telling me Abby couldn't feel the same way that Ellie felt at the end of the game? Both Ellie and Abby were fueled by revenge, but taking revenge was only bad for one of them? For me, the biggest elephant in the room was the nonsensical transphobic cult in a zombie driven world where society and modern culture are stripped away. It can't be helped that this was done to empower the LGBTQ community and there's nothing wrong with that, but at least make it a little more subtle. With all this being said, this game does not deserve neither the vast amount of 0/10 nor the 10/10 scores. Good things and bad things can be said about this game. Ultimately, what made The Last of Us such a special game is completely lost in this sequel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been a fan of TLOU for five years, and have been anticipating this sequel for just as long. I knew of the contents of the leaks, but never saw them and tried my best to not let it distort my view for the game. I trusted Naughty Dog would do better and deliver. Boy, was I wrong and disappointed.

First, I applaud ND for taking such huge risks with their storytelling this time around - that took guts - however, I cannot say that it paid off or was worth it, for me personally. Doing something risky does not make it brave or compelling, let alone a masterpiece. It's how you execute it that matters.

Visually, this game is a masterpiece. The graphics and audio, music, environment, cinematics, and acting was all Oscar worthy. I was fully immersed just by those pure aspects. Even the gameplay was fun, despite it being just a revamped updated version of TLOU1. My jaw was dropped from the visuals at the opening scene alone. Beautiful work by the developers and art team at ND.

However, I play TLOU for the story, and that is where this game fails. They take what you love about the first game, and rip that from you before your very eyes. For shock value, maybe, but mostly for impact - an impact that never comes with a pay off. I had other expectations for where this game would take us, and they definitely did not go that route. My views of the game constantly shifted while playing through it, until now where they have solidified. Joel and Ellie's relationship is revoked to just flashbacks. They very well could be told in present tense and work in the narrative just as well. The flashbacks were my only favorite parts of the game, since Joel and Ellie's conflicted relationship is treated as a subplot to make room for Abby's story.

Their plan to use Abby to build empathy with the player did not work for me one bit, as it didn't for most of the fans as well. She did not show any redeemable qualities or even have any likable aspects to her that made me cling to her as I did with Joel and Ellie. I found myself so bored while playing her and learning her story. Even her friends fell flat as characters and I did not care for them. Alice was an exception though :)

The pacing of the storyline was also messy compared to the first game. It's non linear, which muddles it along the way. Once you feel it's ending, it just keeps going on to a draining end with no pay off or real conclusion. This mostly was their intent to show how revenge works, but once again it falls flat. It feels as though the game is beating the player over the head constantly with the message of revenge, desperately trying to tie forgiveness in with it which frankly doesn't work for me. The constant use of plot devices to manipulate the player was so obvious I was laughing. Abby plays with dogs vs Ellie kills them, etc. After a while it all feels so inorganic and shallow, compared to the organic feeling the first game gives you in its narrative.

There are also plenty of plot holes, contrivances, and character inconsistencies that made the overall story feel weak. Does Abby not know or realize that Ellie is the immune girl from the hospital? Joel and Tommy conveniently plopping themselves into Abby's clutches, without even fighting back. What exactly makes Abby want to save Yara and Lev, besides her dreams?

The ending of the story just left me hollow and depressed, feeling like I wasted 20hrs playing for nothing. Feeling like my five years of investment in Joel and Ellie was for nothing. Everything felt so meaningless, and I was hurt and felt manipulated from the start. Maybe that's what they were going for, but not all players enjoy this type of treatment - to them OR the characters they deeply love and feel connected to. I love Joel and Ellie to death, and seeing where the both of them ended up by the story's conclusion wrecked me like hell, especially since it felt forced and for no reason despite for the sake of being bleak and nihilistic. I guess what the players are left feeling is what was intended, but how we got there was cheap.

I missed Joel throughout this journey, and wanted to see his and Ellie's relationship (which has always been the heart of TLOU) fleshed out even more as they dealt with their issue of "the lie" but it was taken from me, and you. The scene where he tells her the truth felt anti-climactic and rushed. The dialogue was blunt and weak despite their strong deliveries from Troy and Ashley.

Overall, I had fun with the gameplay and the visuals, but story wise I was hurt and let down. Five years of waiting only to be emotionally manipulated in a cheap fashion by ND. You should play it for yourself to form an opinion and enjoy the graphics, but only that. Don't play this game to escape from the darkness of our world, because it only adds to that. The light in the darkness from the first game has been switched and taken from you, only to leave you and the characters you love lost in the darkness.

I love love love Ellie's part of the game but Abby's meh, not so much. Trying so hard to make us sympathy with her, was just forced and off. I understood why she did all this but again it was horrible. The game forces you to like a character that you play for 3 hours and kills the protagonist of the first game that you spend 10 hours of your time playing and enjoying him. And the way they killed him was also horrible, it wasn't even halfway through the game that Joel goes and surrenders to people he doesn't even know. The message that this game tried to send too... "Revenge is a stupid game" Ellie kills all of Abby's friends just to in the end gives up on killing her.
I couldn't sympathize with Abby at all, every time I played with her I just wanted her to die.
And some unnecessary scene by the way.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
So wäre Joels Tod glaubwürdiger.

high quality textures, nice details (notes being wet after swimming), easter eggs (Gustavo Santaolalla (music producer) at the beginning of the game) and motion capture for characters make TLOU2 one of the most astounding games ever made even prettier than most AAA games for pc.

    Audio 10/10:
no matter what you get on the screen the audio is always appropriate and high quality.
Sounds like gunshots and voices can change depending on the enviroment.

    Gameplay 8/10:
Good visuals and audio make the game very immersive. Also mentionable are the good physics like blood behaviour. Guns feel allright but not topnotch. Melee fights feel good with many types of finishing moves, the dodge ability and the variety of weapons. The levels are linear and you often can see an upcoming fight only based on the amount of cover. Enemies are a big positive point: natural movement, behaviour (looking after a fallen companion), changing fight tactics and variety make enemies challenging and enjoyable. Crafting and skilling is well made motivading you to search every corner for loot.

    Story 4/10:
The only reason why this game gets a bad rating from me. As a storygame the story is the most important part and has way more impact on the end score than gameplay etc..
Its a story about revenge and forgiveness. After Joel gets tortured, killed by Abby in front of Ellie Ellie goes to Seattle for revenge with Dina, Tommy and Jesse. After slaughtering our way through hundrets of fungi, WLFs, dogs(!) and Abbyfriends as Ellie we are confronted with Abby instakilling Jesse. Now we get a 10 hours long flashback of Abby and her perspective having nothing to do with Ellie. ND tries to make Abby more likeable and understandable by showing her "nice" side. This attempt to show the other side of the coin fails badly. Abbys action of avenging her dead father (doctor we killed as Joel) by travelling thousand miles only to torture Joel who has saved her life from zombies minutes ago infront of a familiy member who beggs for merci is unsympathetic and tells the audience that Abby is an evil psychopath not able to forgive an act that happened 4 years ago. In the flashback we can see that Abby knows of the actions of the Fireflys to kill Ellie without her and Joels consent. By that she also knows that Joel only defended his daughter making her vengeance even more absurd and cruel. As Abby we also get to know Abbys collegues who confirm my opinion about the WLF being a bunch of scumbags. The WLF is at war Scars aka. an aggressive religious scumtribe. After Abbys story showing how she changes from a cruel killer to a nice person within 2 or 3 days we get back to the final fight playing as Abby. Now we can see that Tommy got shot in the eye by Abby after saving Ellie from a bullet. Now we fight against Ellie and win. As we are about to kill Ellie Dina attacks us with a knife. Luckily Lev is here to save the day by shooting Dina in her arm. As we are about to kill Dina Ellie tells Abby that Dina is pregnant. She responded with "good". The only thing that stopped her is Lev. The game tries to make us understand and forgive Abby for 10 hours straight but the only thing it achieves is confirming our prejudices about Abby being a cruel psychopath. After the fight we get a big time jump to Ellie being together with Dina and her child in a nice farmhouse. As it turns out Tommy is alive. He comes along showing Ellie where Abby currently is. After she refuses to avenge Joel Tommy gets mad and calls her a coward. Thats straight up **** Tommy was the guy who has gone out for revenge without Ellie because he worried about her. He even told his wife to lock Ellie in Jackson and now he suddenly doesnt care about her even though she has more to loose than ever before. Now Ellies ptsd comes back and she cant let go of Abby. She goes after her knowing she lost Dina and her child with that descision. After she meets Abby in a horrible condition prisoned by Rattlers she fights her. As she was about to kill her she thinks about Joel how she forgave him and realises that revenge wont make her happier so she lets go of Abby which is quite unrealistic considering she murdered hundrets of people only to get to Abby. Now she turns back home where nobody is left. She then tries to play her guitar but with only 3 fingers left she isnt able to (Abby bit them off). So she leaves her last memory of Joel behind.

A dark story where everybody looses because of revenge. Especially Ellie even though she spared Abbys life. Main problem is a lack of character developement, plot holes and the game trying so hard to make Abby likeable but achiving the opposite. Because of that the game feels very unsatisfying.
The idea of a revenge story where both sides of the coin are shown is good but executed poorly.
I could live with a sad story (even though its not my taste) as long it is greatly written.
Its a shame they didnt spend more time making a good TLOU2 story.

The landscapes were also great. However, the fact of playing as Abby, the antagonist and character who killed Joel with a golf club, Is not so best option for the game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I believe this game deserves a 6/10. It was highly disappointing. Although the graphics were phenomenal and the gameplay was great, the story fell flat for me in a number of ways. For one thing, Joel’s death while not surprising felt rushed and executed merely for shock value. His death felt numbing in a way that it partially contributed to me not caring or being emotionally attached to any of the characters in the game. The lack of care for the characters is due to the fact that I felt a handful of the characters relationships with one another were insincere and could have been developed more (Jesse, Ellie and Joel, Dina, Lev and Yara, Tommy and Maria, etc.) During the game and up until the end, I found it difficult to fully connect or care about any of the characters in the game whereas in the first game, I developed a deep attachment and understanding of Joel and Ellie, flawed or not. Furthermore, the switch to Abby, not only threw me off in terms of the plot progression (bc with Ellie we had reach a cliffhanger by Seattle Day 3 and then we switch to Abby) but also because Abby’s story felt like an entirely different saga vaguely related to the most prevalent events of the game. I understood the theme of vengence, violence, forgiveness, and tribality, however I don’t think I needed such a long and dragged out game such as this to understand these themes. In fact, I’ve seen shows such as Avatar: The Last Airbender (a childrens show) reflect these themes much more powerfully and executed in ways that made me deeply reflect on the human condition not only as a kid watching it, but still as an adult rewatching it. I can respect the risks Naughty Dog has taken in an attempt to elevate gaming to new storytelling levels, however, the story just did not work for me. Expand

You’re all over the place with this game. I was hoping the leaks would be false about playing for Abby for the second half of the game. It was flashback after flashback and then you flash forward and then flash back and then flash to the present: it was all over the place. And after you beat the daylights out of Ellie and her crew as Abby, you flash forward like a year maybe 2 years into the future with completely different takes on the characters. For example: At the beginning of the game, Tommy doesn’t want Ellie to go face Abby and just let it go, and then at the end of the game, he calls Ellie pathetic for trying to let it go?? The whole barn sequence felt like a day dream or something. It’s like if you were watching a tv show that ran 4 seasons. 1st season is great so far. It’s good, it’s interesting, and it sets the tone and setting. 2nd season, it’s all right. It’s nothing like the first season, but you aren’t as interested. Then it feels like you skipped the 3rd seasons and went straight to the 4th/final season with new characters (rattlers) and Ellie, Abby and Tommy are all different characters now.

Despite all that, there were many good parts to the game, mainly being gameplay.

Baffling decision to make you upgrade one character for 12 hours just to start from square one with a completely different, slower, less sympathetic character. The entire thing just seemed like it was one hit after the other and the antagonist turned heroine did not deserve the redemption story arc she got. Plus, there was a very inappropriate scene that did not need to go in the game. All in all, what made me realize the story wasn't all that good was the fact that the ending left me and many others unsatisfied. It just didn't fit the main character's story well after the events of the game. If you want an awesome game with mechanics and graphics that will blow you away, buy it. But where the game shines in this elements, it completely lacks in story telling, narrative, and characters. For some weird reason its told in disorder,, meaning that when you kill some characters in the first part, you dont even care, since you never cknnected with them until the second part. Ellie just isnt the one that we knew in the first game, and neither is Joel, both make stupid choices that they would have never done. Abby isnt a like able villain/protagonista, she has a very stupid motive for wanting them both dead, and it doesnt make you connect with her by just playing as her, what made Neil Druckman believe that was the case? No clue. Aside from them there are a few likable characters, like Jesse, Dina and the dog. However the story telling is just bad, terrible, the whole game happens for nothing, the purpose of the game isnt acjieved and not by your choice, but the writters, what was the point of playing it then? Aside from that they really didnt cared ripping off Mulan, those who have played know what I mean by that. The game is just lacking, it makes you make some **** choices, and then makes you feel bad about it, just because. I dont know who told Neil Druckman thats how you write a good story, but it certainely wasnt Amy Hennig, Craig Houston, Kojima, María e Krawczyk,, etc.. Expand

I personally really enjoyed some parts of the game like beating up Abby, combat, graphics, characters. But the story line was somewhat mediocre. Especially 10 hours of Abby gameplay was really stressful and painful for me. On the other hand I missed Joel so much the entire game. It was painful to see how he was tortured and killed. But I would definitely recommend this game to everyone just to let them see what this game has to offer. Expand

This game will be hit or miss for a lot of people, the story was all over the place and felt forced in many instances, the whole "cycle of revenge" trope feels very tired at this point, and Elly taking the decision to not take Abby's life in the end to supposedly end the cycle makes no sense, since she proceeded to kill hundreds of people during the course of the game, and every kill could potentially create another "Cycle", this is a case where the story and gameplay just don't mesh well together at all. I'm also not saying that killing joel at the start of the game was that bad of a decision, it just could've been handled a lot better. As always the gameplay and graphics are top notch for a naughty dog game, I just never really felt invested in the story, and it felt like they could also skim 5 hours off the game which felt unnecessarilly long, especially in the abby section of the game. 6/10 is a fair score imo. I don't think I can recommend it at full price though, maybe wait for a sale instead.

I think I can divide this game into 3 parts, with the 3rd part being the worst and also very short in comparison, more like an epilogue. If the game ended like I thought it would at the end of that 2nd part, the ending would have been a little bit better (worthy of a 7/10) and

I think I can divide this game into 3 parts, with the 3rd part being the worst and also very short in comparison, more like an epilogue. If the game ended like I thought it would at the end of that 2nd part, the ending would have been a little bit better (worthy of a 7/10) and for me satisfying, but unfortunately we got an extra 2 or 3 hours of playtime before the game ended and those few hours felt completely unnecessary with an ending that was just kind of meh.

Overall I really enjoyed the game despite it's flaws.

    - Story is kind of mediocre for me. We have seen this type of story in many movies and executed better and also much worse. Despite a weaker story, I still wanted some answers throughout the game (and I was satisfied with them) and I wanted to know what happens next. The characters can sometimes be **** stupid and make stupid decisions (some of them selfish) just to keep the game going. I also liked all the flashbacks that happen throughout the game. They didn't feel like filler to me.

    - The graphics are very good even on the normal ps4, the acting is great and so is the level design. There are also a few bigger areas this time. I saw a few (not many) graphical glitches here and there, but perhaps there are less of them on ps4 pro.

    - The gameplay has also been improved and was easily the best part of the game for me. It is very similar to the first game, except you can now also jump, prone and even hide in tall grass and under vehicles and some objects. I THINK they even added a dodge button (or was it in the 1st game as well? I can't remember), which makes the combat better. You can also craft a silencer for your gun. You no longer have to waste shivs to open locked doors. The AI is a bit on the dumber side even on Survivor difficulty and can sometimes be easily exploited, but I've seen worse in some other games. (For example: In the 3rd part of the game I managed to take out probably at least 15 humans (most of them with melee attacks) while hiding in one small hallway with 3 covers, 1 way in from the front and 1 from the back. One brave fool or usually exactly 2 enemies always stopped on each side of the door that leads into the hallway for a few seconds before only one of them came inside to try and fail to kill me while the other one walked away from the door before finally coming in and let me do it instead of coming in in pairs or groups. Also, none of them apparently knew the layout of their own house because they could have easily surprised me behind if they bothered to walk through the room on the right of the hallway that I couldn't see, but they had access to only if they jumped over a very small concrete fence first that was right next to that door.)

    - I didn't see many bugs, other than usually 1 infected being stuck in a small area and keeping aggro after losing sight of me two or three times in different encounters and a human enemy becoming invisible in the 3rd part of the game when I tried to aim at him from position that the game didn't like.
    - Looting feels a lot more rewarding this time, even on the hardest difficulty. If you try to explore everything, you will find a lot of pills, scrap and crafting components and how much ammo you will take into each encounter once again depends completely on your play-style. And you will definitely need that ammo.

    - I loved the encounters in this game. Some were really brutal, 1 or maybe 2 were a bit scary with some horror game vibes, but most of them were fun, 3 or 4 however were frustrating and they forced me to actually play well to get through them. Luckily the autosaves are very frequent during all encounters and they even helped me win a few difficult fights despite the result being a draw. Unfortunately though, for me many encounters felt like filler just to extend the game length, but because I really enjoyed the gameplay, I didn't really care.

As said before if there was a good story telling those key descicions could be done, but in the way the are in the game is not done correctly.

But unfortunately, good graphics don't make for a good game. The plot has more holes than Swiss cheese, the pacing is horrible, the newly introduced characters are thoroughly unlikable, even though the developers try to manipulate the players via pathetic and predictable story beats. Returning characters are being basically abused to push far left propaganda. None of it makes any sense. The entire premise of the first game has been thrown down the drain in favor of nonsense. The ending is arguably one of the worst and most unsatisfying in video game history.

In terms of gameplay, The Last of Us Part II is mediocre at best. The entire loop of stealth, knife kills and looting becomes dull and repetitive very quickly. Not to mention the annoying quick times events. The first game wasn't a revelation in the gameplay department, but the captivating story was the major driving force to push forward. This is not the case anymore.

Overall, The Last of Us Part II is a prime example for the definition of "style over substance". A huge disappointment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm on my 2nd playthrough and to be honest, I would've rated this much lower if I had only played it once. I really didn't like Abby's part or any of the characters in her story (except Yara and Lev). I can write an entire essay about why Abby's crew is such a stereotypical group (especially Owen) but the point is the disconnect and general displeasure came from them. I like Abby a little better after she's spent some time with Lev but Seattle Day 1-3 with Abby was just not fun for me. It felt like TLOU had these amazingly written morally gray characters then in TLOU2 we get.... Abby's crew. I loved that Joel, Tommy, and pretty much most of the characters in TLOU knew they were morally gray, even Marlene who wanted to save the world. But then we get these Salt Lake City crew who thinks they are always the good guys, and that going across the country to torture one guy is justice, not simple revnege.

Again, the 2nd part, I really didnt enjoy. A pity too because if I didnt play it again, I would've forgotten just how amazing and emotionally inpacting the first part is. The final fight didnt make much sense to me either. Ellie spent months to track and kill Abby and when she's there, only then did she get her "peace"? I dont buy it. It feels like part 2 was made for the sole reason of "surprising the players".

The worst part for me is the false advertisement. They advertised this as an Ellie centric game. It was not. It felt like Naughty Dog lied to me and I hated it.

Hopefully you enjoy this game more than I did. I wont be buying the next one.
