I don’t like seeing all this hate getting thrown at creatives. I don’t believe the writers are evil and trying to force their worldview on you. Clearly though, a theme and message got in the way of a good and believable narrative. The gameplay, atmosphere, sound design are top notch and truly an achievement. That being said I think this is the most I’ve ever been let down by something I love, that being The Last of Us and Naughty Dog. It’s one of those things, I wish fan petitions could get a rewrite but that would not be fair to everyone at naughty dog. I’ll be pretending this game never came out, which is tremendously upsetting. As a gamer I’d recommend this game on visuals and gameplay alone. If someone who were a fan of the last of us didn’t know this came out I would NEVER recommend this game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am I huge fan of the first Last of Us and thought it told a simple but effective, emotionally powerful, well-acted story. I was hugely disappointed with this game's narrative. It could have been so excellent with so many amazing characters and themes, but instead we got a bland, horribly paced revenge story with unlikable characters and terrible, unsatisfying twists and turns. I feel there were moments of captivating intrigue and brilliance like the farmhouse sequence with Ellie after the first fight with Abby, the really engaging opening in Jackson (I thought Joel's death was an great way to kick of the story and made you relate to Ellie and the hatred she felt towards Abby) and the lore surrounding the Scars, FEDRA and the WLF. However almost everything else story wise was atrocious and unsatisfying. The ending honestly left me disheartened and depressed. I cannot believe how Ellie went from one of my favourite characters in gaming to a whiney, aggressive, humourless, bland brat. And don't even get my started on Abby! I cannot believe we were meant to sympathise with this utter jerk. I don't mind unlikeable, nasty characters at all. But to play as a character I don't even like for half the game just felt tiring and unnecessary. Her story just had so many pointless subplots.

One thing I completely adored was the gameplay. The actual gunplay and controls, are fine at best, but the cat and mouse style skirmishes are just so engrossing to play through. The options presented to the player are all interesting and viable and I loved seamlessly and tactically switching between slowly sneaking behind enemies and picking them off with my bow and knife, and once spotted unleashing my bullets and traps to reign hell upon my foes before running away and going hiding again. Ellie and Abby are so agile and fun to play as with a wide array of upgrades to choose from and weapons and gadgets to use and craft.

The level design is probably some of the best I've seen with the levels being open and vertical with plenty of places to explore and many different routes to take. In fact, I'm going through my second playthrough of the game right now just because of how fun I found the gameplay and exploration.

The music is okay. I love Gustavo Santaolalla and his music but in this game the soundtrack felt really generic and bland compared to most of his work.

Technically this game is a masterpiece. Visually it is stunning. The low hanging fog, the pouring rain, the ruined, crumbling dilapidated buildings are so amazing to look at and explore. At times the game looked photo realistic. I loved the atmosphere. The sound design is really meaty and satisfying as well. I never game across any glitches. Seems like a really polished game.

The real highlight of the game I think is the performances. Particularly Ashley Johnson as Ellie who really brings a pretty lifeless character in this game, to life.

I thought there was a lack of interesting cut-scenes. I often would rewatch my favourite scenes from the first game over and over again just because I though they were so powerful and awesome but in Part 2 not one scene jumped out at me as particularly memorable, or at least not in a good way. This leaves really long stretches of gameplay which I don't really mind because the gameplay really worked for me but it could be really repetitive for some people.

Overall, I though from a technical and gameplay standpoint this game is a complete masterpiece. But there are so many poor story decisions that were made that left me unsatisfying and feeling like this game was wasted potential that disappointed and disrespected everyone who waited 7 years for this narrative catastrophe. At the end of the day I did enjoy playing The Last of Us Part 2. Its highs are high and its lows are low.

I do love this game and if possible, will play and buy it. But I do feel offended as an Asian when Ellie mention Jesse is not her type as he is an Asian. It’s a bad joke. Other than this, the game story overall still good but could be better. I think they should take more time in developing Abby character Before setting her on this path. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished this game, and this may have some minor spoilers in it.

To start, the original Last of Us was one of my favorite games of all time. I replayed the game a couple weeks before Part II came out so it'd be fresh. I highly recommend doing that.

Let's talk about what this game does well. First, I think the story as a whole was pretty good. Some people would say that the story-telling was poorly done, but I think it was fine. The story is told in a non-linear fashion, but I generally didn't have a problem piecing things together. Wasn't perfect, but I'll get more into that later. Overall, I'd give the story itself an 8/10.

Another thing the game does well is the gameplay. Besides the larger world with more parts for exploration of supplies and collectibles, the gameplay, especially that of the combat system, was mostly the same as the original game. The game also adds the ability to jump and climb up ropes, which adds more verticality to the game than the original had. I would give the gameplay an 9/10.

Now let's talk about what the game doesn't do well. First, I felt the pacing was very poorly done. The game is 25 hours long, but it felt way longer than that. After the halfway point, it started to feel like a never-ending slog. Once I got to the main Abby portion, the story had answered most of the main questions I had early on, so I didn't feel like the Abby portion added much to the story. I didn't really care for Abby that much, probably because she killed Joel at the beginning. Seeing Abby do that created such hard feelings against her that even seeing her side of things in nauseating detail wasn't enough to overcome that. As a result, you end up being forced to play as a character you don't like for 12 hours. Had the game had her kill Joel at a point in the game after we had seen her story, we may have empathized with her more. Nonetheless, it felt like parts of the game were way too drawn out, such that in the second half of the game, I felt myself just wanting to get to where I needed to go to finish the game... only to run into yet another group of enemies. It started making the gameplay and combat feel repetitive and stale. I'd give pacing a 2/10.

The second thing that could've done better is balance. I played the game on moderate difficulty. Played Part 1 on hard. I'd give the first game a 10/10 in balance. Perhaps this was intentional, but this game was much harder to stealth than the first installation. Maybe that was the game's way of forcing the violence onto you. The enemy placement was such that many times, it was nearly impossible to stealth kill one enemy without another seeing you and triggering an all out gun fight. To add to that, I felt that the raw number of enemies per encounter was more, such that many times I felt that there were simply too many enemies. I felt far too often that the game threw these giant hordes of enemies without giving you a reasonable way of avoiding them or stealth killing most of them. Consequently, each enemy encounter was far more exhausting than enemy encounters in the first game. These encounters quickly made me feel burnt out from the combat which was only exacerbated by the poor pacing of the game and the annoyance of running into yet another giant horde of enemies. It quickly felt like many enemy hordes were there only to extend the length of the game and the game's content. The spacing of enemy encounters felt poorly done too - sometimes there would be long stretches without enemies (which I'm not complaining about), or you'd run into a giant horde right after clearing another giant horde. I understand that Naughty Dog was trying to create an over-the-top, violent experience, but it's not fair to ask players to go through that, AND have an overly long experience on top of that. I'd give balance a 3/10.

Overall, this game had the potential to be a 9/10. Maybe even a 9.5/10. The story I felt was good enough for that to happen. But the pacing and balance issues were too much to overlook in my case, so I'd give this game 6.5/10.

Let me start off by saying that I am a HUGE fan of the original game. I have Ellie's tattoo on my own forearm and TLOU2 was my most anticipated game of the decade. I am absolutely in love with TLOU.

Let me start off by saying that I am a HUGE fan of the original game. I have Ellie's tattoo on my own forearm and TLOU2 was my most anticipated game of the decade. I am absolutely in love with TLOU.

First of all, TLOU2 is NOT a 0/10, nor is it a 10/10. The truth is somewhere in the middle. It is no question, this game does not even compare to the first game - a true 10/10, in my opinion. First, the good: Naughty Dog achieved absolutely incredible visuals with this game. It is beautiful. They should also be given credit for polishing the original's gameplay, it is very fun. At the very least, before I get into what makes this game disappointing, I will say that I give them credit for at least trying something risky, the only problem is that the execution and experience was poor.

So what did Naughty Dog do poorly? This game made many mistakes. The first and largest is that you are forced to play as a new character that is extremely unlikable and this lasts for approximately half of the game's length. You are switched to control this character during the game's climax, which kills the momentum of the story. Most players that I know tried to rush through this slow paced "sequence" in order to get back to Ellie's gameplay, only to find that they must play around 10-12 hours with this new unlikeable character in order to get back to the game's climax. THIS right here is what kills the entire experience of this game. Everyone that I know in my personal life that played this game, 4 people, found the second half of the game to be absolutely dreadful and not worth it. I absolutely hated this experience too. I stomached this sequence just go see the ending (obligated to see it through out of my love for the first game), but I can say, without spoiling anything, that I don't personally believe that the experience was worth it. I give this game a 6 ONLY because the first half of this game was genuinely thrilling and an absolute blast, despite questionable narrative choices, which I was able to get over-- at first. There are other issues in the second half and near-end such as constant geographical and chronological shifts, the game is all over the place, and it never really finds its footing. The pacing is a bizarre mess. They also sacrifice smart storytelling for embarrassingly convenient plot advancements. For example, otherwise smart characters make simple and unbelievable mistakes such as dropping literal maps that lead their enemies directly to their base. There are many examples, even late term pregnant women decide that they are fit for militaristic combat, putting them in places where they obviously should not be. These things are unrealistic and just dumb, to be honest. Characters are constantly making out-of-character decisions. No matter how badly I want to like this game, I can't fool or lie to myself, and I have to admit that it just is not that good of a game. I cannot say that I recommend this game, and that breaks my heart to say, after a 7 year wait. But nothing will make the first game any less brilliant.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of us part 2 has some great moments but is written quite terribly at times.

The visuals are incredible, the sound effects and music are great but the story lacks and in order for the story to go how they wanted they had to make a series of coincidences happen and make all the characters seem completely stupid.

    ** Spoilers **
Joel's death is written horribly and disregards his (and Tommy's) entire personality from the first game. The actions he and Tommy make are so out of character and make both of then seem dumb, just so that the revenge story can take place. Both of these characters were very smart in The Last of Us and were cautious about giving information to strangers.

Abby and her group leave Tommy and Ellie alive just so the story can continue! If the characters were making smart decisions this story would not have been able to happen.

You have to play 10 hours with the person who brutely murdered Joel and the creators try to make us feel bad for her because of Joel killing her father. Abby is a terrible person in general and shows no compassion for the people she kills, unlike Ellie.

I enjoyed the gameplay but the story lacks, it would have been so much better if they took a different path.

A mim, decepcionou parcialmente. Expand

Ok, so there are aspects of the game I enjoyed very much, however the bad outweighs the good. In a narrative driven game like this it should live up to expectations and be the strongest aspect, it is not. This game feels like it was structured out of order and as such can be felt while playing the game. Let me make things clear, the Joel's death early is not why I dislike this game, it's the execution of his death. I take issue with Neil wanting to make a divisive game instead of making one that makes you question things on a compelling level. What annoys me the most is that if the game was rearranged and some of the content was cut it could've been a truly great game. Abby is a character who I genuinely liked aspects of, and if she had her own installment I'd be glad to play it. Unfortunately that isn't the case here, we spend half the game tracking down and killing countless people just to get to Abby, then we're forced to play as her from her perspective, but at this point I don't care for her as a character or her friends we've killed as Ellie. Abby gets some of the best/interesting moments in the game, but I just didn't care. Now to talk about the ending it was terrible. Not because it didn't end on a semi high note like the last game, not because it wasn't a happy ending. It was terrible because it made all your efforts as playing as Ellie COMPLETELY MEANINGLESS. All of those people she killed just to get to Abby only for her to let her go in the end? Most would retort that she only did that because she realized "revenge is wrong" I'd agree with that assessment if Ellie hadn't literately murdered like hundreds of people. I'm not saying killing Abby would make for a better ending, but by the end I felt that the story didn't say anything interesting and absolutely butchered the past characters. Sure Ellie selfishly tried to get revenge again and in the process lost everything, but is that outcome compelling or make you reflect and ponder on the game as a whole? No it doesn't. Before I wrap up I'll quickly touch on the flashback scenes, for Ellie and and Abby they were easily the best written scenes of the entire game, which hearkens back to my point about the game feeling out of order. They failed at making me care for the new characters, failed at creating a great narrative like the last game, and failed at making an interesting and thought provoking ending. On it's own merit it fails and as a sequel it fails. This game just ends up feeling like misery porn with the bleakest ending yet. I recommend NOT playing this game and I for one won't be playing TLOU3. 6/10

Firstly, this game is not bad in the sense of DMC2 being bad. The gameplay is well done and does feel like an improvement from the OG, though that does come with its own problems of feeling too similar to the OG. But this is a good game and I recommend it to those who like exploration with a few sections of action. The visuals, the environmental and character designs, the sound design within the environments and the MUSIC are all fantastic.

But now, the story. Without spoilers, it’s a mess, not just in the themes it’s trying to tackle but also how the world’s logic works. Many of the plot points in the original title have either been forgotten or diminished in importance and many of the new characters pretty much run the show without really earning it. While I do find some of the new world building to be interesting, the methods in which we explore them feel hollow and less earnest than the original. I loved the original’s environmental storytelling and how some of the subtle elements provided us a good look into the apocalypse we only caught a glimpse. However, the sequel repeats this formula without much changes nor improvements aside from minor additions like the hunter dogs and new factions to face off. All in all, it doesn’t feel like a Part 2 but more as a Part 1 companion piece that fills in the gaps without interfering the main narrative.

In saying that, I do have to give credit to the voice actors for they all gave their best performances. While I don’t like the writing for most characters, their voices and performances are fantastic and I buy their emotions. Special shout-out to Laura Bailey as Abby because she was amazing as an antagonist and as a somewhat relatable character. If it wasn’t for those performances, I would not have cared for the story or the cast.

Finally, I have to admit that The Last Of Us Part 2 was a solid game with a weak story. Somewhat disappointing after the original but it does have some shining moments here and there. Still, if you weren’t a fan of the original game, I don’t think you’ll change your mind.

Time for the review. and I will be quick but honest about my opinion about it since too many have already reviewed it.

What are the goods in the game?
The graphics, first and foremost. Breathtaking! No complains here.
The cinema, the way characters acting, the animations, they're almost flawless (still not perfect).
The sound effects are exactly what you expect. Onpoint and satisfying.

    What's in the mixed thoughts?
The writing. There's room for a lot of improvments, I was not amused. it's pretty average. A well made writing as an example is the witcher which made me giggle and laugh out loud many times. Little did I felt anything based on the writing of Tlou2 alone.
The gameplay, the Fun. It's really mixed here. Some got bored really quick, others said it was fun and entertaining. In my opinion, It's fine at best and could have had some improvements, deleting animations in the workshops to stop wasting time for example, real is fine, too real is bad for gaming and time wasting, no one really has time to see someone cleans hisher gun everytime you go adjust the gun. Let's be real here, this is not the reason why you're playing the game...

What's the bad in this game?
    The story.
I don't like it, not one bit. It's more than just the recent "events" that you definetely will come across. It's just a revenge plot...It's generic, the way they executed it is pretty boring and lazy.
A child can write a revenge story, almost anybody can write a revenge narrative and in my opinion and in all honesty, also can write a better and more satisfying story for both sides of the spectrum.
It's also filled with holes, holes that shouldn't have been made on purpose. The ending is unsatisfying. They could have added multiple endings, they had 7 years to do so, but they decided not to do so...Interesting...really interesting...I wonder what was more important to them during all these 7 years...The story? Or the graphics...the cinema...the movie like feeling...
The replayability - Well, we all can guess about that...

i want to add some important things that I think should be addressed as well cause little has been talked about it, and I will include this in my review.
First, crunch culture. People crunched their butt out to make this game, risking their lives in bad conditions to provide a product. if any of you, customers, or 'wallets' have no feelings for them or reconsider, "maybe the company crunches them too much, maybe they shouldn't work so hard to the point where it's health risky" If none of you even thinks about these people, you are pathetic, undeserving beings and should be ashamed to yourselves!
No one should make a game at the expense of their health.

Second. The DMCA strikes. I saw what you did Naughty Dog, Neil. A lot of it was unjustified and you should be ashamed of yourselves! A pathetic management with pathetic and boring ideologies.

The final review after summing it all up is sligthly above average. 6/10
It's an average and sligthly average at best.
You may not like it from both sides, if so, replay the game and read my review again. There are better games that you can play the will play with your emotion strings to heart and not in a cheap way.
Good examples are 'Nier Automata' and 'Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice'. Try these for a change if haven't done that yet...

The downfall is the absolutely horrible story they gave us for this. The characters aren’t the same from the last game and this game literally dumbed down Joel and had him get killed like a rat in the first two hours and then they try to make Ellie seem like the antagonist when she’s not and they try to make you care about Abby when a majority of the people who played through the story can’t stand her for the way she killed Joel. Oh and not to mention she killed Jesse like nothing too. Jesse was the only new character I was interested in and they kill him like that. Abby killed Joel, killed Jesse, almost killed Tommy and Dina, and she bit off Ellie’s fingers. Ellie’s killed lots of people trying to get to Abby and then she just lets her get away with killing Joel and Jesse and biting her fingers off. And at some point in the game when you play as Abby Ellie is a boss battle which no one wanted to play as Abby and every person I’ve seen play through this let Ellie kill them as Abby multiple times. This game could’ve been a masterpiece if it wasn’t for this horrible fan-fiction story telling. They can either remake this sequel entirely or they can redeem themselves with a third last of us with better story telling and not his fan-fiction bs! Expand

The voice acting is exceptional across the board, it has stunning sound, decent combat and gameplay, staggering environments to run around in, and the very occasional moment of sheer joy. It IS a dinosaur. But other than those rare moments I didn’t like playing it at all. It’s horribly violent and nihilistic and seemed to resemble torture porn much of the time. No doubt the gameplay is fantastic, the atmosphere is amazing, the scenery and graphics are incredible but the story made no sense to me at times. I enjoyed most moments in the game but the abby sections that you are forced to play about 15 hours into the game were really bad. The reason why they were really bad was because after Joel's death you're forced to play and feel empathy for the killer. I didn't like abby one bit. I didn't feel sorry for her considering she brutally murdered joel and tortured him in such a way that it was hard to watch. The narrative for the last of us part 2 is revenge and by the end of the game when you finally catch up to abby and are ready to kill her you let her go. While i can understand this, it completely contradicts what the entire game is about and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. At least Ellie does survive at the end though. That was probably one of the most relieving moments of the game. Overall I'd say fantastic gameplay, graphics and scenery but poorly executed story and for Abby's section poor character development. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished this game on the weekend but decided to write a review now. I needed time to rethink everything, but now I'm ready. Let's start in order:
    1) Graphic. It is the most important component of the game. it is clear that the company has done a great job in this direction. Everything is very high quality drawn, the eyes are pleased to look at it. But it doesn’t reach the level of RDR 2 a bit, still there the graphics are not reachable. rating for graphics - 9/10
    2) Music. Here is above all praise. Playing the guitar was simply exciting especially liked the episode with the song Take on me, after that I continue to go into YouTube and listen to it. It is not surprised that this episode now has 1.5 million views. So here 10/10
    3) Gameplay. Here it is already debatable. On the one hand, a lot of innovations appeared, a new combat system ... But this is impressive somewhere in the middle of the game, then it becomes already boring. I do not blame the developers for this, but it would be possible to improve it a little. Therefore 8/10
    4) Plot. Here I will scold developers. How could you spoil the story after the first part? We had a great story about relationship between father (yes, I perceive him already as her father) and daughter. Ahd what we have in the 2 part? You see a dead Joel who was killed by some unknown botex woman. and what does Druckmann do? He wants to justify this scary woman with two hours of stupid story about her. It was very unwise to talk about some unknown doctor when we killed more than a hundred people in the first part. That is, he could take any random character that we killed in the first part and make his child take revenge for it. It is very cheap and not original. Drackmann is trying to resemble Glukhovsky, but he is not good at it. Shame on you, Druckmann !!! Now 3/10
    5) Propaganda. One more worst thing in the game. I could forgive Sarkisyan for the terrible daughter of Drake (instead of the normal boy who was supposed to be originally), but in this game it was terrible. Hairy armpits, Ellie's disgusting girlfriend, pumped Abby, gay boy ... All this caused nausea and once again confirmed that calling Sarkeesian was a bad idea. 0/10
In the end, i would like to say that Naughty Dog buried this series of games. I, like many fans, did not expect them to release such a weak game after Uncharted 4. I saw yesterday that he hinted at part 3 of the game ... I am absolutely sure that no one will wait it and the sales will be as low as possible. Thanks for your attention!)

The flashbacks, while great, are poorly placed and I feel the story would have been better if we got some context before the inciding incident, and not after. The ending is good, but not nearly as powerful as the ending in the first one. The new characters kinda suck. Most are killed of and quickly forgotten, and Joel's death does not sit right with me. This game is weird. I hate a lot of it. I love a lot of it. It's still a game I would recommend to everyone who enjoyed the first one, just to have a reaction to it. It's worth the 60 bucks. The review bombing is ridiculous, and people should play the game themselves and make up their own opinions.

Its not about gender, not about Joel but about HOW they implemented this whole **** story into this game.
How in the hell could that happen?
Where are the internal critics that overviewed the story?
    WHY DID SONY do nothing?

Its a shame this game mutilated itself.

It's been six days since I finished playing The Last of Us Part II and it took some time to really think about it.

I want to start with the things I liked about this game. First of all, I obviously want to point out how good the graphics and animations are - I was blown away by how detailed every location was and how you could feel every emotion the characters felt in all of the cutscenes. I like how fluid all the movements seem and the (outer) character design is gorgeous.

I am also a fan of the gameplay - I liked that the areas were bigger in this game and that you were able to explore everything kind of on your own by just strolling through the streets. The way how they kept the gameplay of the first game on one hand, and how they expanded it on the other hand is a good choice as well. To be able to move forward by crawling and also shooting and healing yourself from this position is a nicce addition to the rather "stiff" gameplay of part I. The only thing I am not a 100% okay with considering the gameplay and the surroundings is, that it was simply too much for me. Personally, I was annoyed with how much you can look around and how much you can find, but that's just my own preference I guess.

Now I'm coming to the stuff I had the most problems with. I just could not really emphasize with Abby as a character. I can only imagine what the intentions of the creators were - to see that everyone is capable of doing horrible things, but that this doesn't necessarily make you a bad person - the thing is, though, that although Joel did terrible things aswell, I was much more willing to "forgive" him for that. Seeing Joel die is not my main problem (again, it's just my preference that I would have loved to see Joels and Ellies relationship evolve even more in Part II), it's just the way it is dealt with and how I am forced to play as Abby for more than half of the game. I was very angry at first, but that feeling vanished the more I played Abby. Instead, I became numb. I simply didn't care what happened to her, which is even worse than being angry the whole time. I just wanted to play as Ellie. I felt that the player was forced to feel sympathy for Abby and failed to do so. I would have been okay to dig into Abby's story for two hours or so, but more than 10? As much as I tried to enjoy the experience and to collect all of the stuff etc., I got sadder and sadder and it wasn't an enjoyable experience for me.

And that ending! Ellie has lost everything - honestly, I would even be happier if Abby and died together in their last fight! As much as I loved the gameplay etc, I simply can not overlook the story of a story based game. It wasn't the experience I waited and hoped for the last 7 years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This Game is bold! Neil Druckmann has made a game that I personally loved and hated at the same time. First off this game is absolutely gorgeous and beautiful and has an incredible cast, but for me the story was below average. The first problem I have is the story of Ellie trying to achieve revenge and get justice against Abby. That is her story and her goal throughout the entire game. So when you the player go through hours of this game to not even reach that goal as the main character (Ellie)and the face of the game cover. That is outrageous. It makes the experience of the entire game seem pointless through the eyes of Ellie. If Ellie would have killed Abby at the end then it would have been some kind of payoff for the player, but it is probably true Ellie would get little satisfaction from doing this action, so in the end I agree that Ellie should have let Abby live at the end because she made that decision on her own and finally realized that what she was doing was not something ultimately Joel would want given the circumstances. I also am not happy with how the pacing of this game and how the story is structured. It feels as though segments of this game were thrown together at random. I also of course didnt enjoy how Joel was killed. It seemed like Abby got her revenge way to easily and it wasn't earned. It felt like Joel was put in that situation just so that the story could be moved along quicker. I think it could have been cool to play as Abby and infiltrate Jackson and try to get info on the people in that town and search for Joel through that way and then have Abby somehow create a situation where she could get them alone together and have her betray his trust that way. I think doing it this way would have made it feel earned by Abby rather than just a coincidence that so happen to work out for Abby. Also I very much disliked how the story tries to make you sympathize with Abby as a person. Joel is a beloved character by fans and yes the death of him by Abby was intended for the player to feel anger and disgust which was what I felt. So, when I have the expectation to play as Ellie throughout the game I feel even more disgusted when I'm having to play as a character I hate and then proceed to play as Abby to fight Ellie at a Climax part of the game. Why am I playing as this character who killed one beloved character and is now trying to kill the Face of the game(Ellie). I was so unenthusiastic about this that I let Ellie kill Abby around 20 times because of how much I'd rather play as Ellie in this moment rather than Abby. Back to the point of the game failing to make me sympathize with Abby is in the moment when Abby holds a knife up to Dina's throat and Ellie say "She's Pregnant" and Abby's response is "Good". This makes me hate the character even more because it shows that she is willing to kill a pregnant women without a second thought. There may be an arguement that Ellie actually did kill a pregnant women but when watching that scene she has no idea that she was actually pregnant and when Ellie finds out she was indeed pregnant, Ellie then starts hyperventilating and falls to her knees realizing how **** up a thing she just did. She regrets it and she made a big mistake. So when I hear people saying that Abby is a good person I am caught off guard as to why they think this.

Again I loved this game for taking risks that it did but some of these risks failed which why I hate the game at the same time. The best moments from this game for me was the flashback moments with Ellie and Joel, and it made me realize that if Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann would have made a game about an adventure with Joel and Ellie as a duo going through all the moments of all the flashbacks from The Last of Us Part 2 and going into those moments in more depth and exploring that relationship rather then what we received in the final game. I'm sure their were a couple more things I wanted to go over but I can't recall any at this moment.

6.5/10 - As someone who bought the ps4 for uncharted 4, owns all the other games, tlou1 and even art books TLOU2 certainly doesn't disappoint from a VISUAL perspective. Visually speaking this is one of the best looking games with outstanding environment design and cinematic visual storytelling.

Unfortunately a game is a sum of its parts and visuals can only go so far. TLOU2 is a confused title that fails to clearly define itself as either a game or (what if often feels like.) a film.

Simply put the narrative elements, cut scenes and 'walking-talking' segments often interrupt and get in the way of the core stealth-combat-scavenge game play experience. Being forced to walk slowly through a sequence can be an irritating change of pace especially as this is a pattern throughout the whole game.

It would be easier to embrace this style and pacing if the narrative itself was actually more tolerable and immersive. However the story is riddled with plot devices, clichés and unintelligent characters.

Everything about the narrative is very contrived, characters act the way they do not because it is logical or organic, but because the story demands it.

Routinely characters will opt to engage in solo suicide missions rather than work as a group which leads to the laughable cliché of characters conveniently bumping into one another repeatedly. (Under near impossible odds.)
During every stage of the game characters will always find a way to make the most unintelligent choices they can. This includes a certain group not utilising radios or even combat knives despite being trained soldiers with access to military equipment! There are many examples of this kind and every time they serve as a plot device to either force the narrative or aspects of the game play.

In the end you are left with a game/film hybrid that feels too much like a film and a narrative with too much silliness to be taken as seriously as was clearly intended.
The final product feels very polished from a visual perspective; research and attention to detail are apparent resulting in a very realistic feeling/entertaining post apocalypse.
However this same standard and level of realism is clearly not delivered from a writing perspective, as is so often the case with today’s block buster films.

    Strap in, folks...

The Last of Us was my favorite game for the better part of a decade. However modest a title that is, in the time between its release and the release of The Last of Us Part II, it was only ever truly challenged by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I wondered for a long time if there would ever be a sequel, all while simultaneously satisfied with the story that The Last of Us told; a powerful, moving, and evocative story filled with some of the best character development I've ever seen, a heart-wrenching climax complete with a moral dilemma to truly fracture the soul, and an ending that managed to strike the perfect balance of closure and invitation for continuation. As if that wasn't enough though, the Left Behind DLC was equally moving; a worthy counterpart and beautiful supplement to what was - in total - nothing short of a narrative masterpiece almost by an objective standard.

When Naughty Dog announced that it was making The Last of Us Part II, the Internet was suddenly ablaze with rumors, speculation, and fan theory. So many were excited to see what the writers had in store for the characters we'd come to love so dearly. I was equally excited, but also wary for the sake of the IP. The studio did everything they could to satisfy fans starving for more information: teaser trailers, cinematics, sample gameplay, and more. The community surrounding this IP not only loved it, but they also trusted the studio's writers to do it justice; a real rarity and welcome experience in the increasingly tumultuous and predatory industry that is AAA video game development. There was deep, unified support for one of the few good remaining studios, and it was all but certain that lightning would strike twice.

Only months prior to one of the most anticipated releases in gaming history, the Internet was once again ablaze. Only this time, it was bad news. Headlines appeared about major leaks and spoilers. Apparently, conflict within the studio had come to a breaking point and now spilled over into the public. Out of love for the IP, I went into an almost ridiculous state of Internet self-quarantine. I avoided any whisper about The Last of Us Part II for months. I had waited years for this game and I was determined to have a genuine gratifying experience playing it. I binged the game in all my hours of free time until I finished it last night...

No sequel or continuation - movie, book, video game or otherwise - has ever been so personally disappointing to me as has The Last of Us Part II.

No sequel or continuation - movie, book, video game or otherwise - has ever retroactively made me think so much less of the original.

I wish I could un-play The Last of Us Part II and forget it ever existed. At least then I would still love the beautiful story that was The Last of Us. Am I being melodramatic? Probably. It's only a game... but that's just it. It didn't used to be. At least not for me.

My advice may sound discordant, but there are reasons for it. If you love The Last of Us, do not play The Last of Us Part II. Don't stop there though. If you love The Last of Us, do not read, watch, or otherwise seek out anything about what happens in The Last of Us Part II. However, if you find this to be undoable, if you cannot resist and you must know the story, then you must actually play the game (ideally only once the price has bottomed out) and do so without spoiling any part of it for yourself beforehand. This is why, as much as I want to vent, I haven't written anything about the game's contents here. I can do that separately. This game is a betrayal of the story and the characters you love, by the developer that gave them to you seven years ago. All I can say is I don't see myself buying another game written or directed by Neil Druckmann or any of the writers for the Last of Us Part II. In fact, if I didn't know better I would ask who he stole The Last of Us from. The more I reflect on what transpires in The Last of Us Part II, the more it would seem that its predecessor might have just been a beautiful fluke; lightning in a bottle.

Everything about The Last of Us Part II other than the story ranges from good to amazing. The developers should be proud. Unfortunately, these things can't save a game that hinges entirely on its narrative when that narrative is so utterly broken that it disrespects what made the IP so beautiful in the first place.

If this isn't enough to convince you to completely ignore this game's existence, then I would encourage you to listen to any other spoiler-free player reviews you can find from people who were in your position before playing the game. The established critics are predictably out of touch. There is no "high art" aspect to this game, not even if you squint and turn your head sideways. If you love The Last of Us then this game is not worth playing. If you love The Last of Us, then The Last of Us still has no part two.

The story ugh the story from the beginning i didn't know what to expect, but as i played through the opening i started to realize joel and Tommy seemed a bit off putting i didn't know why until a certain thing happened that put them in a situation that the Joel from the first game would have never been out in ever. And that decision was very off putting, not the result of what happened to him but the context of how he got in the situation. Making ellie unlikable also hurt the story. Pushing new characters to the front that, a. We have no history with and b. Are no where near as interesting as the original cast kills it for me. And to not have payoff at the end was disappointing i dont need a philosophy lesson when i'm gaming. I understand violence and revenge is wrong. Of course, Abby is bad shet in this game, cause you know, kill Joel, bite Ellie's two fingers... If you intend to play this game with the hopes of getting a story with the caliber and emotional moments as the first game you will be disappointed. The game is far too long and is full of itself and the gameplay can't make up for that.

First off I would like to start with the good. As many others have said the game is visually stunning. The game runs smooth on my PS4 Slim and have yet to experience any frame drops. Voice acting is good as is expected the script may not be great but it is acted well. The gameplay is not a massive improvement over the first game but is a much more polished version of that combat system. With the addition of more useful skills to learn and upgrades the gameplay overall feels better. Enemy AI is a mixed bag. Sometimes they flank you and can give you tough time. Other times they are as dumb as can be. The first introduction to Seattle has a sort of open world feel. Where you have a few locations to explore with the goal of finding gasoline. It is a nice concept that the game oddly chooses to never make use of again. Some of the new characters are genuinely likeable although that is certainly a subjective opinion and your opinion may vary.

The worst part about this game is the story and writing. Many will be upset by the early death of Joel as it feels unearned and is intentionally brutal. It is sad to say but this situation seems to occur so early for the sake of the shock factor of it. I generally do not have a problem with this so long as the game justifies itself and the brutality it put us and Ellie through. The game sadly fails to do so and turns into a generic poorly executed story on the violent cycle of revenge.

In the first Last of Us there is a constant theme of hope in an otherwise bleak world. Ellie is the heart of that game and her interactions with Joel are what I believe makes it resonate with its audience. Gone is this theme of hope for a better future. Ellie is understanbly overcome with rage over the death of Joel and consumed by it. But in her trek for revenge she nearly loses herself. By the end of the game Ellie is broken and has given up nearly everything that made her happy for vengeance. A vengeance she ultimately cannot see through. Ellie and the player are psychologically tortured in this game and in a way it seems to me that Naughty Dog intended to paint her as a villain of the story and perhaps the villain of the story. This falls flat due to the motivations and actions of the new character Abby. Abby kills Joel in cold blood and in return has Ellie, Tommy, Jesse and Dina hunting herself and her friends. Although ultimately Ellie does most of the killing. It is with Abby that the utterly fails. The game takes a twist toward the later stages where you are forced into the shoes of Abby. We see that her father was the Firefly doctor who was going to make a cure using Ellie at the end of the first game. Although this justification feels cheap. Marlene is shown to be conflicted about killing Ellie to make the cure and Abby's father is not. Leading up to one of the dumbest lines in this entire game. As her father is contemplating killing Ellie to create the cure Abby says to him "If it was me I'd want you to do the surgery." This presents a problem as now it seems pretty clear that the firefly's didn't care whether or not Ellie wanted to be martyred for their hope a cure. This cast further doubts onto the already dubious act that Abby commits. If the game did not attempt to make us and in turn Ellie feel bad about these actions it would be irrelevant to a degree. But the game seems to actively take the stance that Joel was definitely wrong and fails to give us any reason to agree with that point. Ellie is emotionally destroyed by the acts of evil she commits. Abby revels in the pain she inflicts and seems to enjoy it. It is because of this lack of empathy from Abby that I could not as hard as I tried enjoy playing as her. I thought somewhere along my travels as Abby I would begin to sympathize with her. But as time progress you realize how shallow and despicable a character she truly is. Abby never takes responsibility for the river of blade she leaves in the wake of her selfish revenge quest. The game at this point would sit a 7/10 for me. But the final act in Santa Barbara is a great example of a game overstaying its welcome. Ellie gives up an idyllic life for one last shot of revenge. The product of this being that Ellie's relationship with Dina may never be the same and she can no longer play guitar. A hobby that is one of the last things Ellie had shared with Joel. This game is remarkably cruel to characters we have come to love. If you loved the first games characters and story do not play this game.

Unfortunately for myself, while designed by incredibly talented developers the narrative decisions along with a gameplay decision that can only be compared to the bait and switch that came in Metal Gear Solid 2 negatively impact the enjoyment and entertainment that the first 10 hours provided. Hideo Kojima made a daring and shocking choice with Metal Gear Solid 2, which had players experiencing the majority of the game playing as Raiden instead of the franchise's beloved protagonist Solid Snake. The Metal Gear Solid 2 inspired gameplay choice along with what I thought was a very poorly built story that was incredibly unsatisfying, and unsuccessful in engaging the player are what make this game so disappointing. The tremendous technical, visual, and mechanical achievements by the Naughty Dog team are heavily overshadowed by the poorly constructed story and the twelve hours of gameplay that I found stalled the momentum of the game and was just plain boring to play through. Naughty Dog has plenty to be proud of when it comes to The Last of Us Part II, they created a video game with many impressive aspects but ultimately while always important but especially with this IP the level of storytelling and the contents within the story will influence most players overall feeling of the game. I didn't like it. This game has great gameplay and some of the best acting, animations, sound design, graphics and immersion that gaming has ever seen. However the story is one gigantic mess and it sh**s all over your favorite characters from the main game and features some GoT Season 8 Character Logic.

And even if you ignore the terrible intro (which is by far the biggest fu**up i have ever seen any devs do) the game still isn't great. There are massive pacing issues with multiple moments that are extremely slow and boring, and HALF the game is literally nothing but constant Flashbacks. (it even has a flashback inside of a flashback) Does anyone actually like flashbacks?

What makes these flashbacks even worse is that the first set of flashbacks remind you of what this game could have been, and then in the second set of flashbacks that stretch around 8-10 hours, you are playing as a completely different character while the game tries to justify the events of the intro.
While i understood the reasons and didn't necessary HATE this new playable character, i still had no interest in playing as them.

I was so tired and bored of playing as that character so i straight up stopped exploring and just wanted to speedrun through it so i could STOP playing as that goddamn character and go back to the actual main game, until i ofcourse realized that was the main game and i finished the game.

There are so many different paths that Naughty Dog could have gone down with when making this game and for some reason they took the most non-logical and straight up stupid path. They could have made this into a brand new game that had nothing to do with Last Of Us and still been able to create this exact experience, except it would have been a phenomenal game.

And for being a post apocalyptic zombie game there sure are very little Zombies and way too many romantic scenes... There is nearly 0 focus on the infected in this game which is a damn shame because every encounter is incredible.

I am very disappointed in Naughty Dog for ruining THE number 1 story game of all time.

The only way to enjoy this game is to never play the first one and know absolutely nothing about the characters.

While a solid game in terms of change from the first, the introduction of a new character into the mix was not expected nor in my opinion necessary. When we first meet Abby in the beginning of the game, we are immediately informed why she’s in Jackson. It’s to kill Joel. As a fan of the first game, I was not ok with this but I understood why someone would seek revenge for the murder of a loved one. Abby succeeds in her mission and this is my first complaint with the game. The way Joel was killed did not vibe with me very well. Him telling Abbys group his real name is something he would never do. His death puts Ellie on the war
path for revenge and makes her almost unlikeable in the way she goes about seeking revenge by murdering a ton of people and dogs along the way made her seem unlikeable. When the game changes to Abby halfway through and tries to make her relatable. In my eyes it fails. What she did to Joel is completely unforgivable. I don’t care what Joel did. Overall, the mechanics were great though because it added new things like going prone and tall grass to hide in and as Ellie an unbreakable shiv in her knife. Which was awesome. The ending was absolute garbage. Will most likely not play again.

This 2020 was the first time I sat down to play it and I swear on my life that never before has a video game got as much into my psychology as the 2013 game did (the first part).
I never analyzed as much and entered a story as in that game, without less than appreciating the great games in history, I think I stumbled upon the one that surpasses all.
I am not going to develop something that everyone already knows, it is brilliant.
With that expectation I waited for the second and I did not spoil myself of anything (serious error).
Had I known they would spit in the faces of lovers of the former, I would never have bought this insult to such a masterpiece.
I am not bothered by Ellie's homosexual relationship (what's more, I think he makes a beautiful couple with Dina), I am not affected at all by the Trans character of Lev, nor the constant grievances towards the figure of "man" itself. What did destroy me psychologically (I had to lend the PS4 because I hated controlling a sadistic assassin) was the horrible narrative and its disastrous ending.
I can't believe the thousands of mistakes they made in creating this. Not even Star Wars or Terminator Dark Fate left me with a pain in my heart and mind as broken as you are.
They lost a fan and emotionally damaged me. Until always Naughty Dog. You died for me the same way you killed Joel.

but i do tend to to agree with some other players, the stroy its not that good.. Joel did diserver better and jesse too.. ellie has gone throw too much suffering, why oo why .. make her go throw more on the last two chapters.. the game should have focused on forgiveness as the base for the last part, althought it really shows what happens when revenge is everything for you, and you end up lossing everything for such a stupid thing.. and the last scene with joel doesnt really make sense.. I liked most of the game.. and abby also diserved a better ending, if a DLC is coming i am willing to try it out.. but i would have bought this game on discount.. not full price..
its trying to hard to be a MASTERPIECE, and its not.. not even the shock value, some character we get to know are killed of like they didnt actually mattered.. i dunno i have mixed feelings with this game..

    Just Awesome ....

But what game lacks here is a proper story that matches the level of it's predecessor,
i'm fine with that "character's death" and game was going okay till the second half of it,
game really did not sell me the story of other characters, their relation with others is so shallow and full of cliches .. and did not make the effort to made the proper impact on me and make me sympathize with this character , i've seen some anime and films selling me the same story idea in a better way.

for me .. game feels like separate individual parts that has been glued together ,
if the game has been made into a different order it might have been looked better.

So it's Basically not the sequel that TLOU 1 deserves.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was a big fan of the first Last of Us, but developer Naughty Dog made some drastic decisions in the story telling elements that, in my opinion, hurt this game. I actually liked the story in Part 2 and where it went, but to me it felt as if I had skipped a game or something. It felt like i was playing Last of Us Part 3, while getting to play flashbacks of the events of what should have been Last of Us Part 2 (Ellie and Joel/Abby's flash backs). Naughty Dog started the game off perfectly by throwing us into the events directly after Joel and Ellie escape the hospital and find a new life in Jackson, but it all gets jumbled by skipping 4 years into the future and attempting to piece together the events that brought us to where we are in this game.

In Part 2 within the first 2 hours we see the main character from the first game, Joel, die at the hands of a new character Abby and her "friends" (WLF). This initially was shocking since i managed to not get it spoiled for me, but it became a recurring theme throughout the whole game that got dry and made me detached from the new characters. In this game we play as Ellie, which i was fine with, but the developers made the mistake of allowing the players to watch all of Abby's "friends" die at the hands of Ellie BEFORE the players got to form an understanding of who they are, which ultimately made playing Abby's portion of the story a bit unnecessary since her WLF "friends" seem to serve no other purpose than to die, giving Abby an excuse to wanna kill Ellie. From a players perspective i got extremely bored of the game telling me that this person killed that person so now the character we play as has to go kill the person who killed the person they liked.

I get the point the Devs where trying to tell here: There are two sides to every story. However, trying to explain Abby's perspective felt jumbled as well. It turns out her dad was the guy who could have made the cure and was going to operate on Ellie, but was killed by Joel when he took Ellie away from the hospital. I feel the Devs did a good job explaining why Abby hated Joel and why she killed him, but I feel it would have been better to just go at it chronologically and not introduce her by painting her in negative way. I feel they should have allowed the players to get attached to her by playing the events leading up to her killing Joel instead of justifying it in flashbacks.

Also something that bothered me was NO CHARACTERS DIE TO INFECTED OR BECOME INFECTED. Like what a huge story point to just not even use. In the original game we see Henry and Sam and the complexities of suffering (Henry kills himself) due to the loss of his brother by Infection. In Part 2 there was some random enemy towards the end of the game that gets bitten by a Clicker as a way for Ellie to escape, but thats it folks. Everyone in this game either dies from a bullet or from being stabbed/hit, which after Joel's death, via a golf club, began to feel repetitive, and made me numb whenever i saw another character die in a similar manner. They didn't matter and i shouldn't get attached to them since they serve less purpose than a 3-D rendered set piece that doesn't do much to connect with the payer or drive the story further.

Not everything in this game was all bad. The gameplay is relatively the same, but with some quality of life changes. The player can now use grass to hide from enemies kinda like in assassins creed. Characters can now go prone on top of crouching. New attachments to weapons such as silencers and explosive arrows allow for some really satisfying ways for players to approach each new situation. Graphically this game feels next gen. Something as simple as walking and tracing back your footsteps in the snow really impressed me, but there are some frame rate issued to be had when in grass green areas kinda like breath of the wild had in the forest sections, but its doesn't take away from how gorgeous this game looks. The sound track is ridiculously good and the sound design is better than ever. Simple things like character voices getting harder to hear when in different rooms or listening to clickers nasty noises when sneaking past them sound top notch especially with headphones. I really enjoyed the guitar controls too

Also there were two new characters, Lev and Yara, that felt very well written and interesting for the player to engage with. They are Scars/Seraphites, which are essentially religious cultists. Lev is a Trans male who wants to continue his religious practices, but is critical of it when she felt like a he. No judgment there, but it lead to some interesting story elements about attachment and discovery. Most of the other new characters didn't really stand out as well as these 2 did.

When people talk about the first game they mention how good the story was. In part 2, I felt the story jumped around too much and characters died too often in similar ways, which left me overall disappointed 6/10

However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Although, it could be agreeable to a certain extent that there are major flaws in the story-telling portion of the game, which is the fundamental point of the game in the first place, thus garnering as much negativity as it did for the past few days.

Nonetheless, based on personal experience (without any spoilers), the story is not bad, but its not good either. It's the type of story that hits hard to reality, where there are always the possibility of things going bad, but in the game EVERYTHING that could've went bad DID went bad which is the opposite of the fantasy "good ending" that most people want/expect from a game. It's not a game with a **** story, but its a story that makes you feel like **** and i cannot emphasize how ****ty someone could end up feeling after they finish the game.

Also the introduction of the new characters are less developed compared to the first game, so players have less connection to them and honestly most people probably wouldn't care about what happens/happened to them. However, props to the actors and actresses for putting on an amazing performance nonetheless as one could really see and feel the emotions that they are trying to express which makes you relate more with the characters.

Aside from that there are A LOT of flashbacks throughout the game which really kills off the momentum the game builds along the way, would be more arguably better to have the flashbacks as actual gameplay at the start of the game to allow players to redevelop the connection with the characters again, since even the first game's remastered version came out 6 years ago, a lot of time has passed and most players probably had already forgotten all the emotional turmoils that the first game provided.

Despite that, the actual gameplay itself is amazing, with really well developed fight animations, great visuals and stunning scenery. One would not regret taking a minute off the gameplay just to look at the view. However, the combat system does still feel a little under-developed and the AIs have questionable movements and actions. Furthermore, every encounter does get increasingly repetitive and if I dare say "boring" as it seems to be a deliberate attempt in extending the gameplay length by adding in certain unnecessary encounters which does not make sense. (BUT THE ROPE PHYSICS CRAZY)

To sum it all up, its a great game that i would recommend playing it once just for the experience. But personally once is more than enough as there is nothing to hold onto nor reminisce. Overall it may not be GOTY material as there are many aspects to improve on, but nonetheless it was still an enjoyable experience to a certain extent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished the game and I have to say I am disappointed. From a gameplay standpoint the graphics are beautiful and some of the best out there, the gameplay is smooth and everything ran well, Seattle is dangerous but beautiful metropolis that is fun to explore but the story falls short. If you play the game or saw the leaks a couple of months ago you know that Joel dies and I think that moment is were the game starts slowly falling. I called The Last Of Us part I one of my greats and a lot of that was down to the relationship between Joel and Ellie, however this game tears that relationship down and makes Elle hate Joal. This makes sense as the ending of part one saw Joel betray Elle's trust however with Joel's death the game can barely explore this, only through flashbacks do we get to see any development between the two. I have to say the flashbacks are the best moments of the game for me, they feel natural, and it feels like the progression we would have got from part 1. However for most of the game everything else feels convoluted. Multiple new characters are introduced however they never get any time to develop and therefore you can't care when anything bad happens to them. We actually get a chance to play as the villain for a very long time in the game and I think this part of the game is actually ok and explorers the character well, however as this is the woman that killed Joel so we can't connect, this big portion of the game feels empty and I think it was a mistake for the developers to expect player's to take kindly to playing as probably the most hated person in gaming at the moment. Is the game as bad as many of the fan reviews say, no, but as a sequel it betrays everything the first one did. I think the anger from the fans comes from a point of betrayal, as all the progress of the first game was thrown away and basically amounted to nothing. The flashbacks in the game prove that Naughty Dog could have made a great sequel that stays true to the characters, the ingredients were certainly there but shamefully were not capitalised on, Joel and us deserved better. Incredible visuals and disturbing sights, but also filled with the little feelgood moments that make it all tolerable. The problem is definitely the pacing. Particularly the Abby part, everything is always as dragged out as it can be. With a few good action scenes throughout. The car chase and the Rat King where very fun! But i did not remotely care about Abby and wanted it to end. The gameplay gets really repetitive after the 15 hours. And then your only halfway... The game is good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Last of us 2 isn't a terrible game but it is a badly written one. First of all, I believe it is important to state that the graphics in this game is only what can be described as a technical marvel. The grass glows with a green hue simultaneously with the sun that casts a bleak shade of yellow onto Seattle and it helps bring this game to life. The music is also very emotional and I love the idea of Joel still being alive in the heart of Ellie through the medium of music. The gameplay of last of us 2 is nearly identical to its predecessor with a few new added additions like trail sniffing dogs, the ability to prone and jump, some new infected enemy types, and some boss battles that admittedly do feel lackluster but ultimately the majority of these additions were welcome. The real meat and potatoes of last of us 2 is its story as last of us is a story-driven game and this definitely where the review score drops dramatically. Joel's death purely exists out of coincidence which adds to the overall contrived and superficial feeling to the plot. Tommy and Joel find themselves in a room with the daughter of one of the surgeons operating on Ellie in the first game who Joel decided to kill. Tommy foolishly gives his and his brother names out to the strangers and even offers them to come back to the Jackson settlement for food and supplies. This is beyond out of character for both Joel and Tommy since they're both very uptight character due to the things they have seen and even in the first game they show a lot of examples of this but due to script convenience, the writers decided to find a basic and ridiculous way to kill Joel. We as gamers are not against the idea of killing a character loved by many but the execution here is not only disrespectful but very contrived and badly thought out as it's decided by coincidence and stupidity. The first half of the game we play as Ellie on a revenge quest to get to Abby in which we see Ellie mentally damaged by her actions and instantly shows a lot of regrets and even suffers from PTSD by the end of the game. In the 2nd half, we play as a new character named Abby who was the daughter of the surgeon mentioned prior. This game uses a lot of blatant manipulation tactics to make you sympathize with Abby. Ellie is forced to kill dogs in hard scripted segments wherein abbys section you are hard scripted to play with dogs twice as well as watch a cutscene in which a zebra is saved from barbed wire. Abby is also given the most innovative and interesting segments as well as the best weapons. This is so contrived, the game wants us gamers to like Abby so badly but if you can see through the writing intentions then the immersion is instantly broken and there are loads of incredibly confusing character decisions like how Mel is totally fine with going into battle being 8 months pregnant and how many times characters are let alone to live after a massive exchange despite them recognizing and establishing the consequences that those who were spared will come looking for them and a lot of the time their prediction was correct making their decision stupid. Joel kills Marlene to ensure that she doesn't come looking for them, this makes sense for his motivations and character. Abby is a cruel and unremorseful character that is so desperately made to look a hero through cheap manipulation tactics whilst incriminating Joel and Ellie who have both done terrible things but we can relate to their motivations as they make sense but this game tries everything to make you dislike these characters. The moral of last of us 2 is very basic: REVENGE IS BAD. It is hammered into your mind to the point the viewer faces emotional fatigue making the game not engaging which I feel wasn't the goal of this game. Last of us 2 is ambitious for the sake of it and doesn't justify its new attempt at storytelling. A film like no country for old men is a great example of subverting expectations but not for pretentious reasons but to fit the narrative that is being told, artsy and new styles are welcome but should be handled with great intelligence because when its dealt with laziness and less talented individuals. We find contrived plots with plot holes and what seems to be a great sense of manipulation. it is easy to write a shocking story that subverts expectations, but it's hard to write a good story with well thought out events and characters. POSITIVE :

    Gameplay
Faithful to the first game with attention to detail and a few nice new features.
Small point of criticism > environmental puzzles and unlocking safes become cumbersome after a while

    Voice acting
    TOP notch
Actors know what they're doing and it's seamlessly synched with their motions (due to motion acting)

    Sounds & soundtrack
Beautiful, would've liked to hear more background music to support the mood.

    Graphics
One of the best-looking titles with stable framerate on PS4. Not a lot of bugs/glitches.

    MIXED FEELINGS:

    Storyline
It's not horrible, there are great and memorable moments to be found but overall, I feel let down. If I think too much on it, immersion = lost.

For me personally a story of revenge requires either fulfillment or redemption (forgive w/o regret).
There's none to be found here.

    Character assassination in cutscenes.
See a door? Let's go/burst right through it. While you as a player are either very careful (stealthy) or go in guns blazing with excellent marksmanship / next to unlimited health, in cutscenes the story takes control for the sake of plot and screws characters over. Not how I expect seasoned survivors/scouts to act in real life (and also how they did in the first part). Sorry, but this comes over as lazy writing really ...

Overtly use of flashbacks and character switches.
I get it, you want to show 2 sides of the story and help understand how these characters feel. Just don't exaggerate, it slows down the pace immensely and some storylines feel unneccessary.

    Strange take on pregnancy.
A woman who's pregnant for +6 months can parkour like a champ.
A woman who's pregnant for x weeks becomes jaded all of a sudden and can't move.
I don't get it, who thought this is close to true life and even respectful to women?

The hunt for Joel that isn't.
Abby by chance encounters Joel. He saves her.
First of all, what are the odds, lady Luck must be smiling on our new prota-/antagonist.
Second, there's no after-thought to the rescue, no duality in vengeance which would be the humane reaction.

Overall I'd rate it 6.5, a lot of work went in the development and really, it does show.
But the main story ... written for the sake of a mundane plot.

Finally, 3 lessons I take away from this adventure :
(and the protagonists should've done in the first place)

    1. if you're a renowned killer and you're outnumbered by strangers never tell them your real name

    2. if you see your dad point-blank being worked on with a golfclub, shoot first, ask questions later 3. the doors make for nice songs but are lethally hazardous, enter with care To Naughty Dog I say, when you write a storyboard, PROOF-READ it and check what works, what does not. Do NOT censor genuine points of criticism. Learn from mistakes and grow as a writer.

I wondered, are the writers just trying to make this girl the most unlikeable protagonist ever? Then when I saw how they were presenting the new protagonist and how it seemed she was the real hero (and Ellie the real villian) which made sense to me, but I still didn't like it. Nevertheless, I wanted to finish and I have to say honestly, I do not regret it. I believe the game really picks up after the half way point and things just become more interesting for me. At the end of the story I shed tears for everything that had happened, and all the consequences. This is not the greatest game ever, and I don't think it's better than the first, but it is worthy... Now yes, first I want to say that the game is graphically beautiful in all its aspects, it has almost no errors, the game mechanics seems excellent to me, I would have liked to have polished the topic of jumps a little more but nothing from the other world, In addition I also loved the model of the characters in the game, they seem real people, each damage or each bullet can be seen reflected in our skin as in that of the enemy, now, what things did I not like about this second part? In the first place, I didn't really like the plot holes that can be found in the game, another thing I don't like is the end given to the bone game, how the **** do you let the woman you followed through the whole damn game escape? , Another thing that I did not like was the stupid death of Joel, bone, he is a person with you play in the first part and at the time of the game they are already killing you, what the hell were the writers thinking ?, Now to conclude my perfect ending would have made Ellie kill Abby and with her last strength Lev could kill Ellie, thus showing that revenge is bad whether you are good or bad in history.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has many positives that get overshadowed by inconsistent writing. If story is not too important to you, then this game will probably be to your liking. Review contains some general spoilers.

First, I want to highlight that this game is graphically very well done, with good sound design and very good voiceovers across the entire cast. Gameplay feels like a natural evolution of the previous game, but is not revolutionary. Accessibility options will be a welcome addition for some, and I hope this level of inclusivity sets the new industry standard. By far the weakest point of this game is its sub-par story and pacing.

The game starts with a brief update of what Joel and Ellie are up to, but it soon changes to a much darker tone when Abbie tortures and murders Joel in plain sight of Ellie. We later learn that Abbie is the daughter of one of the Firefly doctors Joel murders at the end of TLOU.

The story follows a mirrored revenge story told from two perspectives, Ellie, and newcomer Abbie. There is a very deliberate focus on the futility of revenge and breaking the cycles of violence, a perspective that is bafflingly only applied to Ellie's side of the story, because it turns out that 50% of the game is played from Abbie's perspective; with a story line that ultimately feels almost entirely disconnected from what Ellie is up to.

The story is interspersed with many flashbacks that add (some) depth to Abbie's character, and that appeal to the nostalgia factor of the Joel-Ellie relationship. These flashbacks are strategically placed to rob the story of any momentum, whenever something exciting happens, there's a flashback that yanks all the pacing out of whack.

Despite the criticism, Abbie is a serviceable character that is introduced in the worst possible manner. She is a hardened killer with selective morality, proving to be very caring with Lev, a boy she meets and develops a relationship with in a mere 3 days while Ellie is coincidentally rampaging through Seattle. Despite the overall story being focused on the futility of violence, this perspective is very much lost on Abbie's side of the story. She is shown to be traumatized ONLY by the violence inflicted on her, but really seems to not give two **** about murdering anyone that stands in her way. In many ways, this character is similar to pre-redemtion Joel, and it even follows a similar arc by taking Lev under her wing, but this arc is far too rushed to really land.

Several "contextual" clues are given to make the player care about Abbie, she has the best combat, guns, expansive storyline, no one is forcing you to feel bad for your actions as her, she plays fetch with dogs, NEVER encounters a dog enemy, has a "cute" character flaw in her fear of heights. Meanwile, Ellies entire storyline is miserable, she is deeply affected by her actions towards revenge. This really rubbed me the wrong way, not because either point of view is bad for storytelling or gameplay reasons, but just because they do not match, all arguments about the inmorality of Ellie's actions apply to Abbie, but the game facetiously does not make those arguments during Abbie's playthrough. By the end of the game, Ellie is left a miserable, traumatized husk of her former self, while Abbie is essentially unscathed and at peace. The message just doesnt compute.

The story itself is also riddled with bafflingly out-of-character choices by all major players (Joel, Ellie and Abbie), with many contrived "saved in the nick of time" plot moments, where main characters are saved by extensive use of plot armor. Side characters, however, die like flies with little story impact, many of the side character deaths are barely met with a gasp, and their names are literally never mentioned again. There were many points, especially on Ellie's story, where the story could have ended on a more poignant note (notably post Seattle discussion with Dina).

There is no big payoff in story-telling through the entire playthrough, the basic scenario is still various factions of humans fighting for resources, where weirdly the zombies seem to really only appear as a minor inconvenience, this also deadens the emotional conflict of both Abbie and Ellie with Ellie not dying to make the cure, since it seems it really makes no difference.

Side characters Dina, Lev and Yara are fine, but they are undeveloped as a whole. Lev and Yara's side story is particularily pointless, since about 8 hours of the game are devoted to them without really developing characters or changing the world state.

Overall the game is significantly longer than its predecessor, but squanders its running time with little left to say. I think the ending scene is meant to leave the player to reflect about the futility of violence and the importance of making your peace with your loved ones. Personally, it left me reflecting on the futility of expecting something profound from this franchise.

The amount of attention to detail in every single environment of the game is astonishing. Some cutscenes exist purely to show off the natural beauty of the landscapes you explore, which is far from unwelcome.
Lots of other reviews do a good job explaining what WAS unwelcome, so I'll leave it at that.

    Graphics - 30%,
Looks good overall with minor aberrations - 9/10

    Gameplay - 30%
Almost unchanged from TLOU and is quite repetitive - 7/10

    Story - 40%.
Unfortunately, TLOU2 suffers from a lacklustre story of revenge that tries too hard to draw parallels whilst simultaneously ignoring its grievous mistakes - 4/10

In my opinion the game deserves a 6 or 7 out of 10. Would I buy it at full price? No. $40? Probably.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After 7 long years my excitement for this game was unmeasurable. The amazing characters and story of the first game kept me replaying the story over and over again with the same emotional effect each time. The Last of Us Part 2 is a flawed story with underdeveloped and unlikeable characters and very bad pacing. Throughout the story I was dumbfounded at the key decisions made by the developers at naughty dog.

Let’s begin with the death of Joel. Now I am fine with naughty dog killing off Joel however the stupidity of the way this happens and the disrespect shown to the characters of Joel and Tommy is insane. The death of Joel seems to be used as a scapegoat for the lack of story ideas of the game developers sending Ellie on a basic revenge plot that contradicts itself throughout.

The game wants you to feel angered by Joel’s death fuelling the player to engage on a quest for revenge against the WLF and Abby, however it also tries to make the player understand the actions of Abby with most attempts being unsuccessful just proving the unlikeability of Her as a character.

One of the worst decisions in my opinion was to replace the Ellie and Joel relationship with Abby and lev it felt like the developers didn’t know what to do with Abby for her 3 day Seattle period so they sent her on a side quest that has nothing to do with the overall game, in my opinion it’s only included to allow naughty dog to milk this series of a part 3 (the adventures of Abby and lev). Abby and Ellie’s story whilst in seattle should run along side each other if we are to truly relate to the characters as we would kill a character as Ellie (Owen as an example) and when we go to playing as Abby and are interacting with Owen the player does not care (just need to mention Owens terrible flat voice acting, I have never seen a more uninteresting character).

And now onto the ending where Ellie leaves her family to finish Abby off and doesn’t because of a Joel flashback, the developers want the player to understand that Ellie has now forgiven Joel for lying all those years ago even though the entire length of Ellie’s story was about avenging Joel. I find it hard to describe my feelings towards this ending as I see it in many ways and I know that it does work if you look at it in the right manner however this can be very hard as naughty dog have strayed so far from what this game was originally about

The main message that naughty dog try to send is that REVENGE IS FATAL! Ellie loses everyone she loved like she explains in the first game, and Abby loses all of her close friends

    I have very mixed feelings!

We all know the redeeming qualities of this game...

Everything is great about this game except it's horrific story. And the story is a big doozy. The characters that I loved are completely ruined. I genuinely am so upset. This game ruined the first one for me and that is not what you want in a sequal. There's just no reason for me to say anything good about it

Characters show up, and dissapear so quickly without really making an impact to the overall narrative. Standouts for the new cast include Lev and Dina, while all the characters you know and love give knockout performances. Sadly, the good just barely outweighs the bad, and for that reason I give The Last of Us Part ll a 6/10 Expand

Lazy story writing that equated to violence/revenge = bad.

They try to put you in the shoes of a person impacted by the violence committed in the first game by Joel... problem is the character isn't likeable or relatable. Also I couldn't feel guilt for what Joel did as it was justified, it was Ellies life for the CHANCE of a cure... without concent.

The game does have some highlights and is visually stunning which is what brought my score up to a 6.
They include the hospital boss fight, the jump scares from the walls and the open part of Seattle.

However anything with the "scars" in was just terrible, peaking at the point you take a trip to their island... it felt like you had landed in a Nora village from Horizon Zero Dawn (a game I love but not akin to the last of us!), this happens just when you think you have finished up playing as Abby which is tiresome as she was so unlikeable.

Don't even get me started on the ending, I had hoped the game would redeem itself at that point but you get nothing from it, trying to preach the narrative of revenge = bad... but was such an anticlimax. If you want to play for yourself and judge then buy this pre owned and then likely sell it.

Truly gutted by how bad this game was.

So amazing seeing different people and lgbtq represented. However the story is not good. It feels to me like they were trying to subvert expectations so hard that they lost sight of what the players actually liked about the first game. The story manages to be so slow, yet you feel rushed during certain areas. It's a very simple concept story wise, however it can come accross as lazy and boring. If they wanted to do the revenge anger story line there were other ways to do it that didn't involve THAT scene, but that's my personal opinion. You can tell in certain areas where they are trying so hard to make you feel something for certain characters, which spoils it. They give other characters better weapons and upgrades, just so as you'll enjoy playing as them more. Towards the end it felt too jumpy story wise. What was good about the first game was it only time jumped through seasons and the very start, however I feel like they made left behind, and because it did well, they decided to use that formula. However it doesn't work as well here, it's just so jumpy through many different times that it's messy and disorientating. I am honestly so disappointed. I think there's a way to respect what the players wanted and not pander to them, however this wasn't it. But subverting expectation so badly and so much it feels like a Game of thrones season 8 catastrophe. Naughty dog seems to always hit stories out of the park but this one was a miss for me. I'm so gutted. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Visually, this is one of the most beautiful games the PS4 will likely see. The gameplay itself is fun, if not a bit repetitive, and the same as the first game. The sections with infected that feel like a survival horror game are easily the highlight of the game, which creates legitimate tension while you are trying to sneak around or fight your way out. Sadly, the main draw of this game is where it falls the most flat, the story. For me, it came to a screeching halt at about the mid-point of the game. Building Abby up to be so objectively evil in the eyes of the player and Ellie, and then expecting the player to play as Abby for 10+ hours in some bizarre attempt to make us sympathize with her just did not work. By the time that switch was made, I had been looking forward to getting my revenge SO much that once I realized she had her own skill tree (meaning I would be playing as her for a while), I stopped playing for 3 days. It had killed all the momentum that the game had at that point, and forcing a “reset” mid-game just made me feel like all I had done so far was for nothing. And anyone who knows how the game ends will know, this game exists for nothing. There’s no story payoffs, no shift in the world after everything happens, it was for nothing. Main characters get killed and then never mentioned again, or grieved for. I feel like if this game was shorter, and more focused, the story had potential to be good. But as it is, it feels like a story that just drags on for the sake of stretching things out, like they had some arbitrary number of hours they wanted it to be, and that they filled it with uninteresting and repetitive story beats to try and draw parallels between the 2 playable characters, but without making one of them likable or interesting enough for me to be invested in her story; forcing me to slog through it to finish the game out of an obligation to see the ending, because of my love of the first game. This game is totally shallow if you compare with the first one... the way that characters are developed is totally stupid, the game literally calls you idiot. despite that, the gameplay is the same as first one with the difference that now you can jump and lying down on the ground. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
