Story was extremely unsatisfying but gameplay and graphics are gorgeous and genuinely amazed me. Playing the game made me feel bad about myself, for example beating the **** out of ellie or having to try and sympathize with such an unlovable character (Talking about ABBY).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After finishing the game, my feelings were mixed. The graphics are the best you’ll find on the PS4. This is seriously a great game to look at. The music is written by Gustavo Santaolalla who kills it once again for this game. In fact, some scenes ride purely on the graphics and music to illicit an emotional reactions and I found these scenes incredibly insulting. The gameplay is a solid B+ for me. I often would get frustrated when popping out of cover as the enemy was able to get a shot on me faster than I could Iine up an accurate shot on them. What I realized is that the game is trying to encourage frantic dashing around the map. I would be most successful when I popped off a headshot from stealth and then quickly relocated myself to avoid the onslaught of enemies moving in on my location. I think this works well enough but I wish the game had a little bit stronger aim assist by default. Now onto the story. I don’t want to go too in depth here so all I’ll say is that this game is filled with situations that feel so unbelievable and forced. The story as a whole is both unappealing and unrealistic given the context of the first game. And 10 hours are spent playing as the antagonist, trying to earn sympathy from the player for this character. This falls completely flat and what you’re left with is hours of pushing yourself through the story just to get back to the characters you actually care about. Overall I don’t think that this is the sequel that the first game deserved, and I’m looking forward to doing another play through of that first game to cleanse my palate. Expand

Good points - Nice visuals, good gameplay and genius level design.
Bad points - Poor storytelling, bad narrative and the worst dialogue between characters out a cutscene.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Game mechanics introduced in the sequel improve the gameplay loop and the combat animations look fantastic and provide a variety of interactions when combating enemies. Now, with regards to the story, Naughty Dog introduces multiple themes and ideas in Part II, but fails to truly flesh them out in an emotionally and rationally satisfying way. The same can be said for the characters, both new and old, with characters having little development and rarely with any payoff, with many characters' story lines abruptly ending with little fanfare. By the end of Part II, both the player and the characters are in such a low point both physically and emotionally that you come out of the experience wondering what the point of it all was? Unfortunately, The Last of us Part II's response to that question is such an unsatisfactory, weak, and vague answer, that it ultimately leaves a bitter taste in the player's mouth to the whole Last of Us Part II experience.

but what makes the game good is game play graphic world design and development now my decision is that the story is fluent and beautiful at first
it also has a start that draws you in. obviously it is played for 3 hours in a row at first without ever leaving the game
but when you get in the middle of the game you can start to get bored slowly
but when you get to the end you are begging for the game to end, especially when you play the memories of Abby you are getting cold from the game.
and we came to the final, I think it was the worst and the most disgusting end compared to the game history
Even if a person wanted the end of a game, it wouldn't end so badly
In short, my comment is that the beginning of the game is perfect, the middle is meh, the end is disgusting
If you are going to buy the game, I can recommend it to you for game play and for the pleasure felt when you hit that npc. but the decision to take for the story is up to you
so in short, it eliminates game hunger

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I get why this game is getting hate. I don’t think it is deserved (except for the parts where you play as Abby). I personally liked the game, the thing that felt off was the tonal shift. It happened so suddenly that it caught me off guard. One second you are a agile badass killing clickers left and right, then the next you are a refrigerator playing fetch with a dog. The ending wasn’t something that I expected to be so hollow. I was left with an unfulfilled feeling in the pit of my stomach. It felt like my 20+ hours of gameplay amounted to nothing, but after a while it made since( even though it was pretty stupid). My take on the ending was that Ellie wanted to end the cycle of violence by not killing Abby(which was stupid). Anyways Ellie ended the violence by mowing down hordes of people only to not kill the person who killed her father figure and her best friend. The person who stripped Ellie of almost everything/one she had know. Even upon Ellie’s return to her home, she is stripped of her family and 2 fingers. All in all the revenge Plot didn’t really work for a game like the last of us. I applaud Neil and his team at Naughty dog for creating a unique experience in tlou2 but it is impossible to follow up a masterpiece. I still loved playing this game I just think that they needed someone on staff to think of pacing and placing, because it was a bit of a mess. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game does a great job in technical aspects like graphics and animations but was mediocre in game play mechanics like melee and ranged combat. The auto-aim was not very good, since it was not always locking the aim on the target. There was also no target locking for the melee combat, which can cause a problem when u dodge the enemy attacks. Mostly i lost the enemy in my sight, when i dodged their attacks. The AI was ok. But the story was terrible in every aspect. The game was boring maybe half of the game play time, since the story is terrible and a couple of times makes no progress for 3-4 hours. You just loot and fight the enemies. The main goal of this game is story telling. But the main story is not good/interesting. There are also some ridiculous parts in the story. Most annoying one is that Abby was helping 2 newly met Scars children and by doing this she was taking on her faction. The game could be one of the best games ever, if the story was a good one. But now it is just a okay game. Expand

    Pros:

    - This is one of the most visually impressive games I've ever played. Near photo realistic at times and character animations (except picking up loot!) are exceptional

    - The gameplay has improved from the first, with larger word design, greater arsenal of weapons, character moves and smarter enemy AI, enabling to play how you want and move dynamically between action and stealth

    - Excellent sound design. Playing this game with headphones made enemy encounters tense and the sounds from the infected horrific

    - The performances in this game are top notch, taking motion capture to a whole new level. even the slightest movements, glances and unique character mannerisms are picked up in these great performances

    Cons:

    - In an attempt to expand the world of the Last of Us and make a bigger story that "subverts" expectations, the story is significantly dumber than the first game. Characters behave uncharacteristically, and some scenes have characters suddenly having a change of heart, as if they are bipolar. And this is not just with the main characters but even with the supporting cast. Also the overall theme of the "circle of violence and revenge" is highly unsubtle and bordering on the level of pretentiousness. This emotional weight of this theme is nullified by the game's brutal gameplay, which is more visceral and also includes dogs as enemies. While Part 1 also had the player commit violent acts against many foes, it was a story a familiar bond between characters, protecting one another and hoping to reach the Fireflies and potentially creating a vaccine that could save humanity. The game was about surviving a brutal world, where nobody is truly free of sin, but the net positive of potentially saving humanity outweighed the negatives of killing so many. But this game makes you hoardes of people for and tries to make you feel bad when certain characters are killed in cutscenes. There was no emotional weight to these moments, with one particular death making me laugh at loud at how the game tried to emotionally blackmail you for killing, when hours prior you were already conditioned to the same act to others.

The game's pacing is all over the place, often killing any momentum that had been built. There are even flashbacks within flashbacks, which could have easily been avoided had certain scenes and gameplay sections were reordered in a more linear fashion. The game failed to create any emotional attachment to the second protagonist, due to poor placing of their gameplay sections and the stupid decision to remove any character/weapon upgrades. I know that this is a new character but you could have at least given the player resources from the get-go so the player could immediately purchase some upgrades or have some skills pre-unlocked. This decision made it feel like playing a game for 10 hours only to have your save corrupt and having to start the game again, highly demoralising.

The game is also far too long, especially the 2nd characters sections. There are even some story beats that do not go anywhere and feel like needless padding. Finally, while I didn't like the way the intro played out, although I understand the reason but felt the execution was poor, the ending is absolutely abysmal, and goes against the main theme the story kept hitting you over the head with. They could've followed through with their theme to its logical conclusion or at least given the player the choice in the final confrontation, which would have had a far stronger emotional weight. But in the end the game ends on a whimper than leaves you feeling empty, and questioning why you even played it to begin with.

I don't normally hold game stories as high as books or movies, due to the gameplay from most AAA breaking any sense of emersion the story was supposed to tell. But as someone who thought the Last of Us 1 was a major step in the right direction of video game story telling, setting a new bar in the medium, I'm obviously going to extra critical to the story of the sequel. Overall I was disappointed in that regard. I respect the decision to go back to these characters, this world and tell a darker story, I even respect that they made such a bold choice in the beginning. But the execution was so poor, with terrible pacing and an underlying theme that contantly and unsubtlely beats you over the head in a pretentious manner, and an ending that is just the wettest fart in the wind.

It wouldve been nice if it was a stand alone game but to play with the villain made me uncomfortable. The whole LGBTQ agenda is crystal clear here like I mean I dnt have anything against it but seriously lile you made the majority gay or **** and not just that I had to read love letters about some gay guy who lost his husband. They pushed this too hard and it ruined the game for me. The ending lacked a meaningful ending I mean it didnt even show where Dina went or what happened or where did Ellie leave to. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its surprising that a game with 10/10 graphics and a 9/10 soundtrack and decent gameplay could only receive a 6/10, but thats where I would rate TLoU2 due to its story.

For some context, the previous entry TLoU1 was a story set in a dystopian/miserable world that had a story fundamentally about love.. and hope. With all the tragedy that they underwent, it was the juxtaposition of hope and Joel/Ellie's story that carried you through the game.

TLoU2 was a story set in a dystopian world about love and hate/revenge, (At least on Ellie's story). Without the aspect of hope, and given the context of the story... unfortunately there was very little redeeming about this game in terms of story. You had a miserable world and a miserable revenge plot. This was the authors intent and the author succeeded in this mission. Yes, there were some other intentions such as exploring the concept of revenge and forgiveness, but this was felt as secondary to the prime directive to make you miserable.

I think the authors of the story looked it on paper and perhaps in the context of film and thought it would be an artistic masterpiece, because the story on paper seems beautifully woven and with intricacies and nuance to its themes that if explored differently might have been enjoyable. But in the context of a video game it simply didnt work. The miserable, hopeless story detracted from what could have been a game with similar global appeal as the original. The CHOICE of hopelessness is something I cannot understand for a video game. A video game is 25-40 hours long, not 2 hours long. It is NOT the same as a movie. Hopelessness for 25-40 hours is an ill-informed decision, especially escalating hopelessness.

Expanding on this point, in most video games, EG survival horror games like (Resident Evil, Dead Space, Wolfenstein, the Evil Within, Silent Hill, etc), you are enduring hopelessness but at a third wall level you know you are the protagonist and you think that you will come out okay in the end. The brutal murder of Joel in the beginning of TLoU2 eradicates any semblance that this is the case. You are enduring actual hopelessness for 25-50 hours. I felt this game was basically the equivalent if as Christopher Nolan decided to make Dunkirk 30 hours long as an artistic vision. This kind of experience is not designed to be 30 hours long and any reasonable person should know that the game needed hope to make it endure, (like as was contained in the first game). Its was as if Neil doesnt actually play video games so he doesnt understand that this is not a movie and how his vision would actually translate into a game.

Expanding further, playing Abby was ultimately repugnant and unenjoyable. This is not toxic masculinity or bias, this is the general consensus and it is strongly correlated with being a "gamer", IE, whether you adored the first game. The character that brutally murdered Joel because her father refused to not murder his (basically), adoptive child is not an ethical grey. Despite condemning the world, western societies are not the collectivist societies of Russia/China, etc. Western societies are individualist societies that value the individual human life. For not even CONSULTING with Joel he has the western moral right, and Abby was in a typical moral wrong, (from the western societal level). Despite any potential redemption path for her, the decision to make you play as her is repugnant from the perspective from any member of a society that values classical liberalism and individualism.

Finally, and a point of contract. Here is my proposal for how the story SHOULD have gone, but why they didnt because current year is 2020. I actually agree that Joel's death could be fitting and even poetic, but not the way he did. If Joel has to die, imagine that they give you the game with him and he dies at the end. The story gives you the whole game to process that BEFORE hand with hints (through context of the story and the situation they are in), that he might die. At least throughout the entire game there is the HOPE that it will turn out okay. Imagine that they come for Joel and murder dozens of people and threaten the town but dont get Joel. Joel and Elly head out and explore the revenge and all the themes the same way. And by the end of it, some sort of conflict/hostage situation has to occur, and right when they are at the finish line, Joel decides to sacrifices himself for Ellie as HIS decision, and somehow throughout the course of the game or at the end he can deliver the same message that the end of this game had, to live her life and not get revenge. This is the story that makes sense, but it was the story that they couldnt tell because they wanted to tell a more progressive story. There is nothing wrong with progressive messages, I think its great to give hope to marginalised groups. But this game decided to decapitate the obvious, beautiful, poetic story.. for a progressive story that didnt make sense.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion a very good game but i didn't like it and i didn't enjoy it at all. The choices that characters took (been written by the directors and writers) seems that doesn't fit with the story and the choices that made in the previous game . Neil and Naughty Dog wrote the story around Joel's death . So they had to kill Joel , but in the game this fact is poorly executed (not cinematography related but storytelling related) . Joel and Tommy decided to trust a complete group of strangers , invited them in their town , gave up their names with no second thoughts . This choice is against the laws of Joel and Tommy as we all know they did terrible things to survive and we see Joel in the first game teaching Ellie about not trusting easily other people in the world of LOUS . So i think that one of the first discussions they had the writers of ND were related about Joel's death . The fact that they choose to break the laws of the characters morals in order to tell another story seems completely off . When you let your characters with their choices develop the story , well , the story actually works feels organic and alive . But when you decide to develop the story around a fact that happens against the character's beliefs ( Joel's and Tommy's mistake to trust a group of strangers) , well, that doesn't tell a story but it puts the characters as puppets and binds them un-physically in a line of storytelling that the writer choose for them (without taking into consideration their personal choices) . All the above , applies to Ellie or Jesse or even Abby as characters . I liked the world , the vision , the cinematic gameplay , the sound , the details , the hard work of people in ND , I even liked the time-line they choose to tell the story ( you see the bed that they cut Yara's hand as Ellie and you don't know what has happened and then you learn as Abby what happened ) . I didn't like the characters and the storytelling at all . Expand

Some of my views still remain positive, graphics, music etc are still good and deserve a better score in isolation.

My biggest beef with the game is it's infuriating linearity and uses too many cut scenes. In new game plus I skipped the majority of the cutscenes and obviously it is normally slightly faster as you know what is coming. IT IS 6 hrs and 30 mins SHORTER..The total playing time for both play throughs is less than 48 hours. AND I AM A SLOW PLAYER.

The linearity of the game seriously gets frustrating. I have played many of the large open world games of recent years and to come back to something this restrictive was a huge disappointment.
They have had 7 years to come up with something better than this. There is no getting lost in this game as it won’t let you go off the path it forces you to take.

The story and characters all have issues Some of them quite serious and annoying. They get more noticeable in a second play through. . No spoilers. Play the game and decide for yourself.

They have even used recycled scenarios from the first game. This is just plain lazy and an insult to the paying gaming community that has to suffer it.

All in all I was super disappointed in this game. I was so looking forward to it and preordered it months ago. I wish I hadn't. I would still have played the game to see what it was like, but would have waited until it was a lot better value for the money.

i did enjoy playing parts of the game, but these in no way make up for the lazy game design and bad character narrative.

IF THIS IS THE BEST IT GETS I HOPE THAT THIS IS ‘THE LAST OF THE LAST OF US ‘.

Ironically the Story is the weakest point of the game. It starts out compelling enough but the decline is steep and steady right until the ending which is criminally unsatisfying. I don´t care about any of the new characters and none of them even come close to Joel and Ellie from the first part.
The game looks amazing and the gameplay is actually very fun. I enjoyed exploring the vast areas of the game, collecting resources, crafting and modding my weapons. The changes to the combat system are minor but sensible. The battles are tense, action packed and brutal.
The Last of Us Part II is not a bad game. I enjoyed playing it and even though the story, the supposed heart and soul of the game, was a sad caricature of the original, I still finished it within a few days and couldn´t lay off the controller. So I can´t honestly rate this game too badly.

If you´re new to the series or don´t really care about it you´re going to have a good time with it, just wait until it´s on sale. But if you´re like me and you love the first game, Part II will leave you with an overwhelming feeling of disappointment.
I don´t think I will ever replay this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My Overall Review:

    The Good:

    - Graphics-wise, in my opinion, looks pretty stunning. But I feel this game would have been suited for a PS5 launch day release then we can see the full capabilities of the games engine.

    - Combat really similar to the first game and I enjoyed it, plus the new additional movements and whatnot.

    - The crafting and upgrade system felt really polish and good. Having the gun benches here and there to custom my weapons was also a nice thing to have.

    - The AI has been improved quite substantially and that was a plus side.

    - It felt more horror like compared to the first release. It had a mix of the Walking Dead and Outlast vibes here and there. For someone who isn't a big horror fan, I did not expect walking into this but at least it kept me on my toes.

    - I really enjoyed the easter eggs like Nathan Drake's ring from the bank in downtown Seattle and the throwback PS3s and PS Vitas.

    The Bad:

    - The way Joel's death was handled. It felt very intentional that the writers decide to kill him off just for the sake of it and hence using that as the entire basis of the game.

    - We were promised that this game was mainly about Ellie but in comparison, I felt that I've been playing Abby for almost 60% of the time and I did not like it one bit.

    - I did not enjoy playing back Abby's backstory because it felt useless, removing this would no doubt make the game shorter but this time, it's quality over quantity.

    - The overall storyline and character development did not feel fluid at all. The game was literally jumping here and there and at certain parts, especially after playing Abby for over 5 hours. I felt like putting my controller down and switching my PS4 off.

    - The ending was also disappointing. From the beginning after Joel's death, Ellie swore in killing every last one of them. But at the very end, I have a feeling that Joel may not have wanted that to happen but Abby's death was well deserved considering the amount of pain and suffering Ellie has gone through... she lost her parents, her surrogate father, one of her closest friends (Jesse) and has put everything on the line just to seek revenge and avenge Joel. But, Ellie decides to let her go... that was a really disappointing part to see.

    What could be done better:

    - If Naughty Dog wanted to have Abby's backstory. Maybe, they should have decided in doing like what they did with Uncharted The Lost Legacy. Keep it as a standalone game and that 10 to 13 hours of gameplay should suffice.

    - The overall plot could have been done so much better. Ending Joel within the first 2 hours of the game was really heartbreaking considering everyone loved the character he turned out to be. Possibly making some sort of death scene at the end of the game, maybe when he dies of old age after going on his last adventure with Ellie would have been a much better approach in my opinion.

    - Also ending it could have been written so much better and I CANNOT emphasize that the ending was nowhere as top tier as the first game. The writers and director honestly could have decided to let Ellie kill Abby considering her dreadful past. I mean that was why Ellie decided to leave her family and go to California anyways...

    Conclusion:

Overall, this game could have taken a much more different route than anyone, even myself would have ever expected. There were too many plot holes which did not make any sense at all. The characters despite a vast majority being fan favorites, except for Abby and the rogue WLF's could have been developed and given far more emotions and a stronger personality. Killing Joel should not have happened and he should not have died in that sense considering how much he and Ellie have touched our hearts from the first game. Yes, I know normally living up to the standards that were already set from the first game will be really tough. But everyone has been waiting for 7 years to see where the gang would be and this was just a major flop and let down to the entire community and the players.

The fact they reduced Joel and Ellie's relationship to bitter flashbacks killed the drive of the entire story, and killing him off before introducing Abby made it impossible to make the player empathize with her in any way. Both sides are willingly ignoring what it does well and what it lacks. Graphics are great, gameplay serves its purpose. Story is interesting and really unexpected ... BUT when the credits starts rolling any enjoyment you could have taken from gameplay is overshadowed by an immense frustration built up from the very beginning of the game.

    TL;DR:

    - Visuals : 8/10 | Somehow i feel like the models are kinda on the ugly side. Even Dina and Ellie are not really attractive imo [Don't even get me started with Abby] , but otherwise, the rest is a treat to the eyes.

    - Gameplay : 7/10 | I'm more of an RPG player (Divinity, Dragon Age, JRPGS and such) so i guess i'm not the best qualified to judge this criteria. However, the gameplay is simple and effective enough to keep going without too much of a fuss.

    - Story: 4/10 | That's the core issue with the game. TL;DR: The choices made by the writers are bold to say the least. I honestly think the idea was interesting and would have made a great twist... if It was handled correctly, which was not the case here imo.

    > Extended opinion concerning the story: On paper, the themes and goal of the writers were to show how destructive hate and revenge can be; and by the end of the game this goal is achieved, sure. The core of the matter lies in how the main characters are treated throughout the game. Most of the players have built an attachement to Joel and Ellie and they are utterly destroyed in this sequel.

I believe that Abby and Joel share a lot in common: they both are merciless and cold killers coming from a great loss in their past. What makes them interesting is that they do not hide it and admit that they are not saints. They both even go through a redemption arc during their development. But the results are very different because of the writing.

Joel's arc works because he is shown as a human first and foremost, he turns from a cold and bitter old a**hole to a caring and loving father. And when he single handedly kills dozens of other survivors working to save humankind for a selfish reason at the end of TLOU you understand why. Understanding is not condoning though, and most players knows that he is a selfish prick for doing that, but still, they know how important Ellie is for him because you've seen everything they've shared and how Joel has grown since the beginning of the game.

Abby follows the same path... upside down. She is shown as a monster first and then the game tries to humanize her. But it doesn't work because the player is already so lost in frustration and anger that anything the game tries to soothe things up is blown away by what she did. And this is a stupid mistake made by professional writers... or it's intentional. In which case they are purposely ignoring basic rules of story telling.

Ellie is the biggest loser in TLOU2. Her character is shallow, always pondering everything - which is understandable and human - but doesn't sit well with the overall story. You see her taking harsh decisions, always going forward because the story needs it... and still, she's constantly questioning her own beliefs. Again, it makes her very human, but is a disservice the story as it breaks the rythm of the game. Moreover, her decisions are very questionable especially when after suffering a defeat and realizing everything she could have wanted otherwise, she gambles her peace for the sake of an old grudge... Which leads to an underwhelming rage when the player realizes at the end of the game that everything might have been in vain after all.

And this is frustrating. You poured hours upon hours upon one goal, watching a beloved character forsake herself and her dreams for it ... and all that for naught. Ellie didn't deserved this, she is a killer, sure. But so is everyone else in this universe, and unlike others, the player is emotionnally attached with Ellie which is why we feel her pain as our own.

The story has many moments where it doesn't make sense and it was too manipulative and forced among the players. They failed to gain interest from the players at a lot of the parts. Even with an open-minded mindset, I still struggled to enjoy the game and understand the true purpose of the story. While I can understand the themes and messages through watching videos and reading comments on reddit, it just shows how they failed as a story-teller to effectively deliver. They made the story way too depressing to gain support from fans. While as a story it might not be the worst, but since it is a video game, something that is supposed to be enjoyed, it ignores the purpose.

If the story was better, this game might have gotten an 8 at the lowest. It is very disappointing and shameful that the potential was wasted. Hopefully Naughty Dog learns from this mistake.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The great visuals, graphics and gameplay are awfully shaded by the abysmal storytelling, dialogue and pacing of the game. The key events not only are poorly scripted, they are unnatural and sometimes painful to watch, when they could have been handled much better. The same happens with the characters, at their core there is potential for a really deep analysis, but the dialogue and actions just make them bland, uninteresting and even unlikeable. I have no doubts that the writers had a great story to tell and a very strong statement towards the current social and political state, but as sometime happens, it failed to deliver, and the unprofessional handling of the early criticism, censoring, extorting and calling for a politicial brawl just made it worse, forcing people to take sides. Devs, there is absolutely no problem with the inclusion of LGBT+ characters and there's absolutely no problem with political views expressed in a game, you just made a bad story and poorly written characters, and if you can´t handle criticism you are not worthy of being praised. Explain how the game could have ended at peace but ellie decides to go after her again (thankfully), yet when she is just about to kill her finally, she has a stupid flashback of Joel (what makes me mad is that another flashback made her go after Abby again)and decides to spare her. In the end, ellie lost everyone, 2 fingers, didn't get revenge, but Abby got her revenge and got a happy ending with Lev. Wasn't this game abou Ellie's revenge? Didn't you want Ellie to get revenge? I can’t even describe how intoxicated I was from the visuals in this game. I took several screenshots because the game was just so gorgeous. Also, the acting is SUPERB. This is why I am absolutely annoyed people are rating this anything lower than a 5. For god’s sakes...you’re just being an **** and you know it. People put their heart and soul into making this game. You’re crapping on their work because of ONE MAN—Neil Druckmann. Talk about agenda driven...0/10 reviewers are purely driven by their own hate-filled agenda. They want to hurt Naughty Dog and burn down all that go with it. You’re trash. Have some respect for those that had NOTHING to do with the story. They just did their jobs. With that said, I struggled between a 6 or a 7. The reasons I gave above certainly warrant a 7, but the negatives just outweighed the positives, I’m afraid. To start, I found the flashbacks so chaotic and improperly placed. I found myself INCREDIBLY annoyed at the start of the game when Ellie and Jesse are talking about “the kiss” that happened “last night” and there was a tense moment between Ellie and Joel. By the time we got to that specific flashback, it was like, what? 15 hours into the game? Maybe longer? Idk because the game was so damn long. I literally forgot all about it by the time the flashback occurred. It took me awhile to piece it together because it was just randomly squeezed in hours and hours later into the game. Which leads me to my next point. The game was just too damn long. I honestly don’t think I would have been too bothered by the length if they didn’t keep flashing back to things they barely made references to earlier in the game. The entire story is one long jigsaw puzzle you have to piece together. If it was a bit more linear, I don’t think I would’ve minded it so much. Last but not least...Abby. I’m sorry, Neil, you just didn’t sell me on her. I didn’t care about her story. I get that she lost her dad. I honestly get where you were going with it and the message you were trying to convey, but you forget that I had played an ENTIRE game with Ellie and Joel—characters I came to love and hold close to my heart. Ellie had so much more behind her vengeance in my eyes. Maybe I’m just being stubborn and closed-minded, but I just couldn’t see Abby’s vengeance equaling the pain Ellie had. And then you made me brutally FIGHT Ellie?? I had no choice. You made me freaking attack Ellie in the theater. I kept putting my controller down because I just hated it. Ugh. I freaking hated it. Idk man...it was a bold move, Neil. I get it. It just didn’t resonate with me. I’m sorry. Expand

    #1. The game is gorgeous.
#2. The gameplay is solid if a bit out-dated.
#3. The story is erratic, I remember them saying on twitter that it was hate begets hate.

The story is erratic at best and fails to tell the story they want to tell. It's literally "Ellie lost everything in pursuit of revenge" while the new character got literally what she wanted. Joel is dead, but she lost some of her 'friends.' I guess that's the loss she had.

At worst the story is paper-thin.

My personal opinion is that they misused Joel entirely killing himself so early in the game.

I'm not particularly mad that he is dead. But the way it does it. They just wanted a shocking scene that no one was shocked by if you've had your head to the internet for any length of time where this game has been mentioned.

I honestly tried to distance myself from the spoilers, which I think I did admirably. I just didn't enjoy the game.

It's not a 1-4. It's a solid six on many levels, but I will not put it above that because of how erratic the storyline is.

Everything in the game is incredibly good and well thought of, except for the story.
I found some of the narrative choices very lazy and at times confusing. Most of the new characters weren't developed enough to make them even slightly interesting. They didn't dedicate nearly enough time on the relationship between Ellie and Dina.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly I thought the game was solid, the story was a bit of a mess. Not very well told with a lot padding....so much padding. Like 10 hours of padding, but that doesnt ditract from my views on or because the have is still fun to play as it's basically a carbon copy of the first.

But let's address the plot for a minute, I understand where they're going and trying to do a story about Ellie suffering from PTSD from Joel's death but it was just done poorly.

There are flashbacks within flashbacks and the overall plot is a bit of a confusing mess, seems like they tried to do a Pulp Fiction but didn't know when to stop.

So the gameplay it's good, it's basically the first game with extra and the plot after all said and done is a solid okay, I did sympathise with the main antagonist by the end of the game.
The problem is it takes a good while to get there and can get tedious waiting for the next bit of plot that has anything to do with the overall story.

Hopefully they'll do a better job with The Last Of Us Part 3

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's get something clear first. I have played this game from beginning to end. I just finished it today so the entire experience is as fresh in my mind as it's going to be. Frankly, it's getting extremely tiring at this point that the mainstream gaming media, naughty dog, and others such as the game's voice actors are blaming the extremely poor audience scores for this game as being caused by "bots" or people who've never played the game or have any intention to. I played the game. I'm an actual human being, not a bot. I've owned TLOU1 for years, both the original PS3 version and remastered. It's one of the best games I've ever played. With that said, TLOU2 most certainly is not.

As much as I tried to go into this with an open mind, and I tried extremely hard to be open minded about what Naughty Dog has done with the story of this game... I just couldn't really get past a lot of the glaring issues with this game's narrative. The game does have redeeming qualities and it deserves to be scored higher than say a 3 or 4. For some examples of the game's positive aspects -- the visual fidelity is genre defining and the best I've seen on a console, right up there with other titles like RDR2 or Horizon: Zero Dawn. The game also gets a lot of the finer details right. The gore and violence is some of the most realistic and unnerving I've ever seen in a game. Blowing a human or infected up with a pipe grenade looks like something straight out of "Saving Private Ryan". It is gruesome and extremely grounded in reality. The exploration is much more fleshed out in TLOU2 than TLOU1. There's sections that feel more open-ended, with some open-world elements, and due to that it feels less linear than the original did. Furthermore, the sounds and weather effects are extremely impressive. Firearms sound powerful and realistic, and a lot of games get this wrong...TLOU2 does not.

But sadly, we're already onto the negatives. This game has serious flaws in it's story-telling, and how it weaves it's narrative. The pacing is all over the place, especially in the first 5-6 hours where it's dreadfully slow. Up until you get to seattle, the intro to the game is long, boring and feels like an overdone tutorial section. As far as the story and conclusion, I'm struggling really hard to find any redeeming qualities that would let me put it up on the same pedestal as TLOU1. This game isn't a masterpiece as the critics are panning it. It's just not, and if you're being objective you know this isn't a 10/10 game. Sadly I don't think many critics are being objective with regard to this game. The game unravels pretty much all the core redeeming qualities from the first game and it tries extremely hard to tear down the original characters and build up new ones but fails in the process. By the end of the game, I felt zero sympathy for Abby or what she's suffered from and it's because of her utter lack of remorse and general actions that make me feel that way. She's a terrible human being, and even her closest "friends" remind her of this on several occasions. Ellie is pushed to do terrible things, but the entire time you see her struggling with her morality. You never once see that with Abby. As far as Joel's outcome, I think it was an utterly shallow ending to his story. It could've been executed in a much better way. Joel has wronged people, and has sinned himself. Killing him off isn't out of the question, but the way in which Naughty Dog went about his story is just insulting to fans everywhere.

The predominant feeling I had upon finishing the game is that I felt taken advantage of by Naughty Dog. I feel confused, torn, manipulated and lied to with clever tactics and trailer editing. I didn't feel enlightened. I didn't feel sad. I didn't feel angry. I just felt.... sort of used and abused. And I can't help shake that feeling. Like I said, the game has redeeming qualities and it's gameplay loop is enjoyable, albeit the game feels about 8-10 hours longer than it truly needs to be and because of the pacing issues, it starts to really drag later on. If you can get past the story's glaring weaknesses, it's worth playing through the game at least once. The stellar graphics and finer details will provide some enjoyment in between the dreadfully depressing and lackluster story beats. Is it a masterpiece? No, not even close. It doesn't even hold a candle to TLOU1. Is it utter trash, or the worst game ever made? Not quite. It's a game that couldn't live up to the incredibly high standards of the original, and it suffers for it in the end. It's an OK video game... it's a terrible The Last of Us game. As cliche as that sounds. I just felt compelled to write this review after reading so much trash about how all these negative reviews must be the result of bots. No, we're human beings too. We just expected better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics are good , but was not impressed after ff7 remake appeared , it surprised me how a AAA game could be 30 gigs only. But I’m ok with that.I was able to enjoy visually Mechanics pretty much the same old naughty dog style , now you have to upgrade everything in order to be functional on your style( silent , gunsmith, bare fist, or artifact builder) 3 new fungus zombies. Which is ok .( the same model appears every time , but i can manage)

Soundtrack - master piece 10 out of ten . Good job there.

Now the story , the first game was about zombies , but was mainly about the unconditional love that a father has towards his daughter . And how this can be so strong , that a father would sacrifice the humanity’s fate. In this particular case , Joel killed 400+ (If not more ) people in order to save Ellie , and old man who is experienced and passed through storms and adversity for years. It was a brilliant character with a strong development , which caused a bond with several players. And that’s what we loved about the first game. Seems to me like a lazy approach , you have such a charismatic character, and you want to introduce the new Eli ( which lost her style, and the writers also ditched her development) and Abby which is an OP character( kills zombies with her fists WTF). And in order to these protagonists to shine , the easiest resort is to kill Joel and the beginning of the game. Instead of developing the characters correctly, so you can empathize with them. The firefly connection is magnificent , and I even understand the righteousness of killing Joel. But you decide to tear Joel apart in a very simple and stupid way, at the beginning of the game to avoid that time for writing and development, you decide that Joel has to be killed kill by some random ( not so random ) girl on steroids and prolong the game in a repetitive way , in order to introduce all diversity quota. In order for your other characters to shine( lev, Abby , Jesse )you decide to kill the pace by adding a plot twist of the plot twist of the plot twist , you are about to arrive to a place and there’s always something that interrupts you such as a fall , soldiers , clickers etc. And it’s always the same pattern.

I don’t mind that Elli is lesbian , or Abby looks like a man , or the fact that you completely ignored tommy to avoid complexity. What I do care is about the characters development , and how they are driven. It’s not that Abby pursues for revenge( loved the love triangle ) , it is how unbelievable the character is due to bad writing. I liked the end though , Made me cry like a baby.

First, why the hell Joel and Tommy would trust a bunch of random people and say their real name?Joel's death was awful they tripped
Second, the fact that they MAKE you Control abby, sometimes is Just depressing, without even counting the false advertising.
Third,It would be way more interesting If abby was marlene's daughter or something, cuz i hated this stupid ass Idea that the random doctor npc became one of the most important person in the whole history, just stupid.
Last ,ellie's redemption was just stupid, she killed a whole lotta people just to forgive the **** that ended her life, thank god she ended up alone. But the gameplay is so good that sometimes MAKE the history enteresting.Anyway 6/10 BECAUSE of the graphics and the gameplay, cuz History is whack

The new mechanics, e.g prone for stealth kills I thought it was amazing. However the story is where you lost me. I see the direction that naughty dog tried to go with this game by trying to make you feel empathy for Abby but frankly what she did to Joel and how Joel died is criminal. Joel was one of gamings most loved and well developed characters and how you can say you loved this character more than anyone confuses me. Expand

From the perspective of learning more about the world of TLOU, part II does a superb job of highlighting the raw, unrelenting lives of those who survived outbreak day. It may not be what fans wanted; it may not be what I wanted from the story, but it's certainly a story worth exploring. Actions have consequences and every single character will be held accountable for theirs.

Right.....Well naughtydog devs have done a bad job playing as the person that kills Joel is an awful idea I understand playing Abby up until they get to the cabin where Joel dies but after that are we supposed to feel sorry for Abby and what's shes gone through if so I don't think many people will if even any, I heavily disliked the ending they could have done so much better Yes having them fight at the end is good but it should have been very different For instance Instead of showing Joel beaten and dead they should have showed him playing the guitar and that is what should have made Ellie fight and every so often a quick little flash of Joel beaten and dead would have been much better it would have driven Ellie into fighting harder and eventually killing Abby and letting Ellie finally be at rest. Then it should have shown Ellie going back to Jackson and telling Tommy what she has done and them reminiscing there times with Joel. I also don't care for the fact they make Ellie a lesbian it makes no difference to me I couldn't care less about it but I don't think they should have highlighted it they way they did to get on the good side of the media Wich clearly didn't work and it's totally out of character Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After finishing this game and having some time to think about it, I overall liked this game, but I’m very disappointed with the direction they went with. I hesitatingly read the leaks when they came out thinking it would save me 70 bucks but in the end I just had to play it to make my own opinion. Everything with Joel and Ellie was really really great, especially the opening of the game. Even though Joel’s death was horrific and some perceive it to be disrespectful, I’m back and forth on where I stand on that, it was a good motivation for Ellie and even though Joel was absent his presence was always felt. Tommy was really great here too. The side characters were ok, I liked Jesse and Dinah and lev. But the reason I’m giving the game a 6 is because of the Abby portion of the game. It was so goddamn boring, having to play through those 3 days again as a character that is very unlikable. I understand that the hame was trying to make you see her perspective but I just felt nothing. Those 10+ hours really dragged and by that point I was bored with the repetitive combat situations. But then after that part of the game when you get back to Ellie was really good. The ending scene with Joel was very emotional and the last scene was really sad. I kind of understand why Ellie let Abby go but at the same time I really wanted revenge and kill her. Overall, I enjoyed the Ellie parts of the game but I really didn’t like the Abby hours. Also the graphics and gameplay were amazing, even though combat got a little repetitive towards the end. Expand

I would first like to say this game is stunningly beautiful the graphics are amazing the animations are cool kicking a guy down a set of stairs feels good since it doesn't take you out of the game with a cut-scene like some games do. The gameplay starts out fine but over the time starts to feel repetitive and boring with a huge amount of quick time events. Now to start with the story i didn't enjoy it but i didn't hate it. One part of the game forces you to kill a dog then tries to make you feel bad for a choice you didn't have a choice. If they changed alot of these events around. i feel like the pacing would feel better and you wouldn't hate the antagonist as much as you do. overall it's a average game would recommend getting it when it goes on a deep sale like 50% off. TLOU2 spits on TLOU1 like Manny spits on Joel. The biggest issue I have with this game is how disrespectful they are to Joel. You can tell Neil didn't like Joel. Joel felt out-of-character in this game too. Why on earth would Joel Miller tell strangers where he lives? After being mad skeptical of everyone for most of his life. Then we have the retcon of abby's surgeon father (who looksTLOU2 spits on TLOU1 like Manny spits on Joel. The biggest issue I have with this game is how disrespectful they are to Joel. After being mad skeptical of everyone for most of his life. Then we have the retcon of abby's surgeon father (who looks NOTHING like the surgeons in the room when joel kills them). The game just forces you into a bloody revenge tale and constantly reminds you how bad you are. And when you get to the end, Ellie simply stops being blooddrunk? If ellie would have stayed on the farm with dina, Abby would have died.

There were some good moments to the game. Ellie playing "Take on Me" was one of them. Her and Joel pretending to be in a spaceship is another. The graphics were fantastic. The production value was top notch and the level design was beautiful. These reasons saved the score from being 5 or lower. I can certainly see someone give this a 7, maybe an 8 if they really did enjoy it, but anything higher is SUSPECT. The story is not enjoyable or coherent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hate to say that this anticipated game wasn't up to par with what I and many other fans expected as, this game had its positives and its negatives (mostly surrounding story). First lets get the positives out of the way, this game has incredible graphics a type of beauty I haven't seen much in other games as it always captivated me in the playable locations. Talking about locations, another positive are the levels where you play at although still somewhat linear this time they offer you many ways to approach a situation such as combat plus this game gives you more options to explore which I loved as in some levels I found myself usually taking more time looting than going to the main objective. Also I would like to say that the game play or combat was alright as I was hoping for more innovations but i really liked the new addition of the prone as it really helps with stealth. Lastly I would like to shine some light on the accessibility that this game offers as there are many options to fit anyone and any difficulty, With all the positives out of the way now the negatives. The negatives are basically the story but even though it is one negative compared to many positives it can't be brushed off so easily. Especially with games like this , they rely to much on the story hens why its such a huge problem. First off the death of Joel: The fact that Joel died wasn't really why I hated this but more so how early on it is and the way it happened. The way Joel dies is such a disgusting and disrespectful way to take out such a beloved character especially after how much time we have spent into seeing him grow as a person and how much time he has spent surviving just to die like this. Another part I hated was Abby: The fact that the game tries to make you sympathies with her just doesn't work as no matter what she does people will hate her for killing Joel and the 8 to 10 hour of game play with her were the worst parts of the game as all you can think of is just wanting to kill her. Unforgettable characters: The new cast of characters are unforgettable as they have little to no characteristics and apart from Dina you don't get to see much of them. Especially on Abby's side as the whole way through you hate everyone who Abby is friends with apart from some characters and when some of them died I didn't care about their death as they really weren't established. Lastly the ending: By the ending the devs probably thought that you might care for Abby which is probably why Ellie lets her live because I see no other reason that Ellie would let her live as she caused so much pain and damage to her loved ones and her. I think they should have at least given you the option and I hate how the revenge is bad theme leaves Ellie with no one and no thing. In the end i think this game tries to hard to be physiological but instead of doing that right they just paint things as just bad or good. There are many other games that have tackled the same message of revenge being bad as this game does the message terribly in my opinion. This was my personal review of The Last of Us Part 2. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Story: This is the massive negative for this game. With a game so story focused, this is why I've brought the score so low even with my glowing appraisal of the other aspects of the game. The story is filled with plot-holes, manipulation of the player and cheap ploys to get you to "feel" for a new protagonist.
There are so many easy tricks the writers use to try to play with your emotions and then act is if it was some profound twist. When in reality the story is just a massive misery/gore simulator that tries to look down its nose at you with a shallow "revenge isn't the answer" plot for some characters while
neatly ignoring that moral for other characters. The best way to describe this insult of a story is the writers trying to gaslight you into thinking this is some big statement on morals and virtue when its just them taking you on a Stockholm Syndrome roller-coaster.

Verdict: If you want to play this game as a tech-demo and simply enjoy the gameplay/visuals then by all means have at it. But if you have any hope for a decent story that builds on the first game then you will be very very sad and disappointed. Vote with your wallet if you don't like this sort of thing and
    wait for a heavy sale.

    1) the graphics are just great
    2) gameplay - the level of development of many aspects is simply amazing, but in general, I already got bored in the middle of the game, there is very little variety
    3) the plot. in the middle of the game you started playing as if it is DLC.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us - is best console game ever!
The Last Of Us Part II - Story writers shouldn't be allowed to work anymore. It's not problem that Ellie is gay, no, we knew that since The Last Of Us: Left Behind. Death of Joel? Well that really sucked and after that happened i wasn't feeling good, i couldn't believe it but i thought that if they decided to kill him, that they got awesome story behind it! So his death isn't reason for bad rating, no.. The reason for bad rating is that i'm forced to play Abby (who i hate!) for half a game! Is Joel killed so we can play ~12 hours character that is 'Built like Ox'? We don't care about her personality, we don't care for story, we care for Joel, we care for Ellie, we care for Tommy, we care for character from The Last Of Us! You ruined everything by introducing new character that killed Joel, you ruined our pleasure by forcing us to play Abby for half a game, you ruined everything by letting Abby go at the end. What does that mean? That Joel died for nothing? Jessie as well? I finished game for 23h 34m (Survivor if someone's interested) and for what i played it almost 24h? For which goal? Why we went thru Seattle for 3 days? What was the point of a game? I don't get it. Why didn't Ellie stayed in Jackson after Joel's death? You could have ended game then, ~2 hours after start and it would still be better ending (and game) then this..

My rating was 6/10, probably because i'm rating Ellie's half of the game with 10/10, but i was convinced that Part II will be equally as good as Part I or even better..

The only thing you can do right now is to start creating Part III ASAP and to try to fix this mess by killing Abby as soon as possible by Tommy's hand (because it wouldn't make much sense to make Ellie do it since you lost that opportunity). And to create awesome story with Joel in it (he can appear in it as memories, to give us new moments of Ellie and joel that happened between Hospital and Jackson, or maybe he can be only in Ellie's head, to appear from time to time..)

I think that we fans didn't deserve this.. As you can see no one likes Abby (even tho u tried really hard to make us at least understand her by forcing us to play her and to understand her.. By showing us her's 'good heart' because of her need to help Lev and his sister.. But even that didn't help. We don't want her in Part III, we want her dead!

Hopefully this comment will somehow reach next story writters..

Please try to fix this mess, it's not too late.. Part III is your only chance if you ask me.

    Regards,
    Nikola

The gameplay was what you would expect after playing the first game. What really let the game down was the overall story Joel’s death was completely understandable however it was the disrespectful way in how they had Joel die is what has angered me and the people as they absolutely ruined a beloved character through having him make a stupid decision which was so out of his character which just doesn’t add up. The ending was also extremely underwhelming as Ellie was settled a year later with her family to then force herself to go back for vengeance to then not even fulfil the vengeance she sought. The game made a huge mistake in the layout of the story as they made it almost impossible to have any sympathy for Abby due to the fact she was a random character who we knew nothing about who killed the most loved character ever introduced to the franchise. There is more negatives which I will not go into however Overall In my opinion the game is just completely demoralising ruining the mood for the player at any possible chance it gets as it just sought to portray the message of revenge being bad for anyone involved. It completely ruined the characters I fell in love with in the first game by completely changing their personality and characteristics that they had in the first game. I feel a six is justified due to the beauty of the game alone as you can see the amount of effort put into the visuals I just wish I could say the same for the effort put into the story. Expand

The narrative writers, Druckman and Halley Gross set out on something new and it flopped unspectacularly. It’s a depressing, dragging video game that leaves you wanting to end much sooner than it does even after a couple of hours in. There was so much potential here to build off the legendary story telling of part I and in its own attempt to justify the revenge plot ends up trying to convince itself this is what it’s meant to be. The magic is gone and we’re left in a world where there is no hope, no reasoning, no light. You are left with a sour, unsweet taste of forcing a narrative that’s a complete disconnect from the prequel. As has been said before at least we have the first game and we can all use our imaginations to come up with a better succession to what we’ve experienced. Part II is a dark void of an alternative universe. Nothing is familiar here. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I guess I share my back story with this franchise with the vast majority of people here. I absolutely love the first game and have anticipated the sequel impatiently. However, from my very first encounter with The Last of Us years ago I've felt more attached to Ellie than Joel so for me making her the main focus of the story in the continuation was really a dream coming true. That's probably why I find Joel's death (even despite the overwhelming sadness of the moment) a good starting point of the whole narrative and something that gives Ellie very strong motivation for the revenge.
The first half of the game (everything up until the initial confrontation of Ellie and Abby in the theater) truly left me invested in the story and eager for more. I very much liked watching the relationship between Ellie and Dina evolving and the comfort it gave the main character as well as the player. For me, the camera shots of Ellie's back and the shift in her emotional state, were (and stil are) enough of an anti-violence message that Naughty Dog was surely aiming to deliver.
And here unfortunately comes the second half of the story... At the beginning of the Abby-oriented storytelling I was convinced it was only for a little while (to add some valuable insights into the character's past etc.). I'm totally okay with temporary changes of the player's perspective (after all it worked in the first game), but why anyone though that it was a good idea to throw everything straight into the trash bin and to force us to solve the problems of the person we wholeheartedly hate for the next ten hours? And don't even get me started on making the player fight Ellie...
I'm happy that they at least allowed me see the ending of the story through Ellie's eyes and it was very emotionally-charged and thought-provoking, but honestly I was so tired after this whole "Abby twist" that it wasn't as touching kind of closure as I'd been hoping for before all of that happened.
To nicely sum the thing up, The Last of Us Part II isn't a failure at its core - it's still top notch from the strictly technical point of view, but it was unpleasant for me to see some strange storytelling experiments in my beloved game - there are DLCs for example to implement such ideas. In addition, what's made the disappointment even worse was the advertising - not a word has been said that something like that is coming story-wise and if something takes up about a half of your product, you should mention it. All in all, let me just quote Dina - "I'd give it a six".

Beside spoiler alert, in my opinion this game cannot have a 0 or 10 score, there are positive aspects that do not allow me to give it 0 and there are also, negative things that block me from the 10. let's get into it and why i don't go over 6 overall:

Graphics: This is the best aspect of the game for me. The evolution it took from the first game as expected, mostly on the environment level. It is like cotton candy for a mouth, it melts your eyes, from the darkest zones in the city of Seattle to the country side of Ellie's house with Dina, it is superb.

Voice Acting: Well, this a second if not equal to the graphics in score. Troy Baker, we get less of him on this second game but, well, top notch as usual. Ashley Johnson, Jeffrey Pierce, Shannon Woodward, Stephen Chang, they all do an awsome work also. The surprise (which is not from her career and talent) is Laura Bailey, that even if you do not like Abby character, Laura performance makes you like it at the same time. Wonderfull.

Soundtrack: Gustavo Santaolalla does not desapoint. I could say the that environment sounds are not that great(could have more detail), and the key moments of the game, where the drama hits hard, could have a more heavy impact music, but that does not lower the quality overall. The cover songs and the guitar songs are wonderfull to watch/hear and will imprint in your memory.

Gameplay: This is not negative, but not too positive also. From a TLOU player, they do not change a thing. It's not bad cause i enjoyed the first game, but i expected some type of evolution. like more fluid actions in combat or even actual choices in game progression for example.

Story/Character Development: This is the key for me. Why? TLOU is a story driven game. It can have great graphics, music, acting, everything, but the game in the end, is a story driven game. This is also my opinion in the end. Everyone that is a fan, a true fan, cannot deny that the game falls short, for Abby surviving, and Ellie after losing everything, does not avenge Joel and ends alone... We watched a first game around Joel and Ellie, Where Joel would move the world to save and keep Ellie safe, but now, Ellie cannot do it. Let's be honest, Ellie like the game is made now, leaves in the air that the decision to spare Abby was due to what Joel would want for her, to release herself from the guilt and him and be happy without hatred. But if it was Joel in her place, every single one of them would have died without a second thought :) In my opinion also, the timeline is bad, i believe the game was more likeable if we alternate between Abby and Ellie more and not having that, torturing cliffhanger of Allie begging for Jimmy's life. I believe the purpose of the game, like it is, is to make you like Abby nevertheless what happened, so you can see her story, her choices, so you can accept her survival in the end. This is a creator decision, i won't argue with it, but has a fan, we expect to Joel, one of the pillars of the story of TLOU even dead now, to not go insignificant, like not being avenged after all he passed for Ellie, he didn't even had the chance to give his life for her (this could have been much better, having Ellie kidnapped to be killed by Abby and he dying to save her for example, could have been done). Joel dies to fuel the entire story, Let's be honest, Joel's death is the engine of this and ends with low closure for me. Anything could have happenned but Ellie needed to end this. I spent my fight with Ellie in the theater wishing to die so Ellie kills me, and the fight at the end trying to kill Abby without success... Has a TLOU fan this was my heart...

In the end, we cannot argue with the superb technical quality of the game, and the director of the game is to be praised for this, but like everything, the success of a game is made by the players, not the technical analysts only. I honestly believe this game had to much influence from real world issues and less from what made the first game unique and nearly perfect. It is not an 8 or 9 because of this. The main aspect falls short, the story, not only the timeline construction but the expectations from the selling point, Ellie's revenge "of something".

O problema do jogo é o enredo, a proposta! Não tem nada a ver com lacração! Vamos as partes boas: Gráfico insano e gameplay muito bem feita, realmente muito bom!

Agora sobre o enredo... Ate a metade do jogo ele é fenomenal! Ai chega o meio do jogo e a coisa começa a ir agua abaixo...

E a Ellie?

Gameplay is barebone rehash of part 1 with a pathetic progression system that might as well not be there. The reason that it exist is to make me explore the empty world, opening cabinets and desks. Enemy variety can't even be discussed because they're all the same ones from the first game (e.g. Two boss fights were against the same enemy, who was also the same boss enemy that was in the first game). Althoug, I have to admit that fans of the Assassin's Creed series will be delighted to find that TLOU 2 is also filled with walk and talk sequences that contain nothing but cheesy dialogue.
The story is nothing special. Not bad, not good. It's akin to something you'll find in a B movie that you'll watch to fall asleep to. Filled with dull tropes (e.g. kill all the underlings with no remorse, but deaths of characters with dialogue suddenly and coincidentally always get the protagonist emotional), uninteresting and underdeveloped cast of characters, and contrivances to keep the story from cornering itself (e.g. An enemy character has both protagonists under his mercy, but he pockets his gun to slowly choke one of our hero, completely turning away from the other protagonist, who just happened to break free of her restraints at that exact moment).
All in all, if you turn your brain off while ignoring the ramblings of 80% of the cast who are desparately trying to make you feel Ze Deep Emoción, you will enjoy pretty sceneries of the post-apocalypse with some gunplay to keep the game from becoming a walking simulator. Keep in mind that I want mechanically in-depth, customizable, and challenging gameplay in my games, so this game is completely not my taste. But I finished the first one, might as well.

Swear to me there are no spoilers... I swear.

Following up to one of the most acclaimed PlayStation games was never going to be an easy feat. Many of us agreed that the first game did not warrant a sequel and Naughty Dog told us that there would only be a sequel if there was a story to be told. With a reputation such as theirs, I trusted they would do the right thing. 7 years later, the story is here and it has been one of the most divisive and polarizing games released this generation.

The first Last of us was my favorite narrative based game largely because of the well crafted characters and interactions between them juxtaposed against the backdrop of a dismal world. However, if you go into the second installment with the same expectations or use it as any form of guideline, you are in for one hell of a shock! Part II was made to differentiate itself from its predecessor and subvert your expectations. It takes the franchise into a very different direction to what you may have anticipated... and would have wanted.

    So... what's GOOD?
This game is not a masterpiece, but it isn't terrible. Unfortunately, this games strengths lie in the technical department rather than the story itself. The gameplay, animations, systems , AI and attention to detail is hardly rivalled by other games and adds character and previously unexplored tones to each location. The dev's who worked their asses off deserve a lot of credit for what they managed to pull off here. The improved combat system is extremely satisfying, especially when you land heavy blows or feel the impact of enemy strikes that knock you to the ground. The ability to craft a range of useful and well balanced weapons gives you options on how to best take on enemies. The new groups you encounter are unnerving but also not surprising in a crazy apocalyptic world such as this one. The new ability to go prone saved my ass too many times and now you're able to disappear in the overgrown environment like Rambo. The sound design is also fantastic and Gustavo Santaolalla's soundtrack fits very well with the themes in the game with "Unbroken" being my personal favorite track. Apart from the technical side, there are some good story moments too where I actually found myself feel something or actually take a liking to a new character. However, these moments are brief and occur very early into the game or during flashbacks.

    THE BAD
The game is overwhelmingly but understandingly bleak and rarely mimics the charm of the first game, apart from one or two missions (you'll know if you've played it!). Although this game is twice as long as the first game, I felt little connection with the new characters and every single one of them felt underdeveloped. Not only do you not care about these characters, but you are also forced to spend a lot of time with the people you do not like, resulting in a lack of investment. The jumbled storytelling, character design, character decisions and sometimes dialogue throughout the game seems awkward and will often make you lose your s**t... which is a massive problem for a narrative based game. This inconsistency and lack of investment has a destructive effect on your ability to enjoy large gameplay sections and will undoubtedly become tedious, disjointed and grueling. On many occasions I laughed or rolled my eyes at the events that were unfolding on the screen because they were so unbelievable, flawed, tropey, convenient or simply just pointless.

    THE UGLY
The game does not hold back on its violence and actually gives you little option to avoid it. If you don't like to see people dismembered into red mist using crudely crafted weapons or you are a massive dog lover this game might not be for you. The game will also plunge you into dark and spooky areas with your flashlight as the only source. There is one hair raising mission that would not feel misplaced in a resident evil game (if you know, you know).

    THE VERDICT
When all is considered, this game is undoubtedly a technical marvel but falls flat in large segments of the story due to its fixation on teaching you basic morals. In turn, the game sacrifices character development, pacing and everything you enjoyed about the first game. If the focus switched to what this franchise means to the majority of us, then it would have been better received by its audience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are parts I loved and parts I really hated. I think the direction and the narrative focus of the game didn't make sense in regards to the characters, especially where they were at present in their respective timelines. Joel deserved a better end than he got and the direction they decided to go with would have made more sense later in the franchise. Instead you are left with something that feels rushed and not very well thought or fleshed out. I understand what they are trying to get across and the message they are trying to communicate and I think it's a great message by the way, however it just feel the delivery of it was poorly executed and delivered. What I did like was the game play and graphics and also the flashback of the relationship between Ellie and Joel play out over the 5 years at Jacksonville. Overall an okay game but not a masterpiece by any stretch. I expected better. Expand

The acting was great, graphics good, gameplay about what I expected, narrative a complete train wreck. There isn't much motivation for most of the second half of the game. The characters are thrown at us throughout the narrative without the time to bond to them. This story should have not been presented in the video game medium. The violence had little reason in large areas of the game. The acting was great, graphics good, gameplay about what I expected, narrative a complete train wreck. I’ll start of by saying TLOU 2 is a technical marvel. From its great level design and graphics to its improved combat system. That being said what you are probably hearing about the story being lackluster I have found to be true and generally I agree with that sentiment. The first act of the game is relatively strong. We see our first divisive plot point here and while I wasn’t happy when the initial plot event happened I understood that it fit the world in which the game is based. The first act also does a good job of introducing new characters and getting us to care about them. After that though the story takes a huge risk and while I commend naughty dog for trying something different, it doesn’t work for me and actually ruins the story for me as well as the replay ability of the game. The player is forced into a parallel plot line for the entire second half of the game which takes away from the potency and emotional drive of the first act. At this point in the game we also start to see some serious pacing issues that hinder the game even more. When we finally reach what we think is the conclusion we are thrown into another chapter of the game which proves to be pointless and does nothing but makes you further question what naughty dog was thinking with their writing. By the time you reach the actual finale you have likely been ready for the game to be over for several hours. The ending is dry and doesn’t resolve much of anything and leaves you wishing they had never made a direct sequel following Joel and Ellie’s story. Unfortunately this isn’t a worthy sequel to tlou. It can be good as a stand alone experience but most will likely be upset with the path chosen by ND here. I would give it 6/10. Expand

Graphics are good. Undoubtedly, the game is graphically stunning. The story, however, is not appealing as the previous game.
Playing a character the player can’t even connect a bit (during more than half of the game) is a massacre and it was clear that it was not the only poor decision the developers made. Even though, it looks graphically good and it will most likely look better on a PS5,

The rating is not based on this previous information, however it felt important to express it. Six out of ten seems a fair enough score, for what the game gave to the player.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to wait until I played the game to offer my opinion. I wish there were more of that here, as there are definitely some great things in this game.

The Great: The acting in this game is astoundingly good! Everyone who played a part here absolutely nailed it. The visuals are also absolutely stunning. Besides the amazing look and feel of the game, there are tons of awesome details and Easter eggs and give this world a life of its own. Big ups to the designers and actors who brought these characters and world to life. The accessibility features in this game set a new bar for the industry and deserve some serious praise. I hope this becomes the new standard. The work in these areas is beyond excellent! The inclusive cast of characters definitely deserves mention. I loved it in the first game and love it here as well!

The Good: The soundtrack is very good. The sound designers and musicians responsible for the audio in this game should be lauded. The atmosphere created here is really nice. I found myself closing my eyes just to listen at times. I also like a few of the gameplay tweaks like the consumable shivs going away. Not having to scrounge for blades made me feel like the combat was more realistic in some ways. While I feel this led to some repetitive actions, that was only due to my desire to be efficient. It's certainly possible to play this game with a more action oriented feel.

The Bad: The story in this game is lacking to put it mildly. As a huge fan of the first game (I've played it through at least a half dozen times), I was disappointed to see characters act against their core nature as laid out for them before this release. It's possible someone can change, but I don't think that anyone could justify one of Joel's decisions in particular, or the flip flopping of Tommy and Ellie repeatedly throughout the game. The new secondary characters, with exception of Dina, feel flat and I didn't find myself with much reason to care about them. The secondary player character, Abby, is so close to being great that it's frustrating she wasn't. In what felt like putting the cart before the horse, we're asked to try to empathize with her and get to know her after she commits some horrific acts. This becomes impossible when she repeatedly does more horrible things without a hint of remorse. Maybe this is intentional, as we see Ellie react in horror at her own actions quite often. Abby wasn't likable because she is hateful and possibly psychotic. Kudos to Laura Bailey, seriously! She made me hate this character, which I think was the point. In a game that is linear and story driven, the disappointing story hits hard in regards to my score. I had a hard time finishing it, and only did so out of love for several of the actors involved and because I'd already spent the money. I regret that decision, as the ending made me feel like the writers were laughing at me while making a rude gesture. I feel like a few tweaks to the order of events in the game could really make it better, and make that ending feel less like a slap and more like a moment for introspection. Pacing was odd, and I don't see myself going for another playthrough.

The Unacceptable: I counted at least 3 flat out lies told pre-release by the developers of this game during my playthrough. I think it's ok to say nothing at all rather than set expectations based on blatant lies. One of these lies in particular made me want to stop playing the game altogether. I never would have spent a cent on a game that forces me to kill a dog in order to progress. Besides being incredibly triggered by that moment, I'm frankly disgusted and disturbed by that lie itself. The embargo on reviews that led me to spend money on this game is insulting. It would be like asking someone to review the Star Wars films based only on their lightsaber battles. Then, the tactics Sony used to censor anyone talking about it pre-release feel ethically disgusting.

    The Result:
I will be wary to play Naughty Dog games in the future, shame on them for lying to me. I will definitely follow these actors and some designers to enjoy their next projects.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Man I waited 7 years for this game. And It was something I was looking forward to in 2020. Unfortunately 2020 is a cursed year. The Last of Us 2 was a huge disappointment. And I have a lot to say. The game was a beautiful and entertaining game. I had fun wondering around Seattle. And the opening of Jackson. But I am really disappointed with that I was sold on a game by the trailers shown and ended up with a different game entirely. My problems with this game is completely the story and the narrative it decided to tell. Right off the back 30 minutes into the game they kill off one of the most important characters of the Franchise. Joel! I was sold on a story I thought was going to be another adventure with Joel and Ellie dealing with their conflicts from where the first game left off. Instead I got a game that felt like It was a shove into the mud on a rainy day. Instead I got a game that was a false glimmer of hope of trying to gain justice and ended with more tragedy than triumph. I absolutely did not feel anything Naughty Dog was aiming for. And maybe it was just poor execution. But right after joel died all I wanted was to get vengeance and justice for his death and I was IN for that. But it kept dragging on and on and eventually you get into these missions where I feel like the game was trying to make you empathize with the Antagonist. Which is all well if you hadn't killed off an important character too soon. After that all I felt was lust to kill Abby. And I completely did not care for Abby's friends. Nor the kids she cared about. During all of the Abby drama. I just felt like I wanted her dead, her purpose meant nothing to me. And I was just trying to rush through her story to get back to trying to kill her. And then when you finally got back to it, You are let down. Ellie let's Abby Live. She finally could of had justice for Joel. And Ellie let her go.. How big of her. But that's not okay for a player who wanted to get justice served. Maybe others feel differently. But I was not happy at all with that decision. And to make it worse. Ellie lost some fingers sl she can't play the guitar Joel gave her and she lost everything. Dina was gone all of her belongings were put into one room just to be left to be forgotten. And that hurts. Joel dying was not the reason I was angry at this game. It was that it felt like the game didn't want to continue where the first game left off. Sure it did! But in poor poor flash backs just to establish a bunch of meaningless characters for a future game. It just felt like a huge disrespect to the first game. Unfortunately Just like this game. I will also leave it to be forgotten. I am just disappointed. Huge fan lf the franchise and my love was killed and I feel like the first game is meaningless now. Hopefully Part 3..if there is a part 3 ..makes up for what was unfairly done. I just hope I'm not sold on a game I won't get. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
