Great game but, i could have live without the part of going to rescue Lev to the island of the scars, it just made the game a bit tedious and a bit long, also the part of getting away of that island is a bit unchartedesque and it doesn't fit this game, as other parts along the game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU2 is an emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end. The gameplay, graphics, sound, and cutscenes are are all excellent. Some levels such as the escape from Scar Island and the hospital basement fight are breathtaking. However, the choice in the story line will undoubtedly cause some friction in the gaming community. The story line is my only serious complaint amount the game (Spoilers):
    1) Killing Joel early. His death shouldn't have taken place so early in the game. Joel is the patriarch / hero of the first game and deserves more than 15 minutes. 2) Abby - her motivation for revenge is justified. However playing with her for half the game after she brutally bashed Joel head in just doesn't work for me. She also sleeps with her Ex who has a pregnant girlfriend. Her redemption story line doesn't pass for me...

    3) Ellie is missing for half the game. This game is about Ellie (well at least that's what marketing told us). Additionally, Abby storyline has the better gameplay (hospital, scar island, sky bridge).

-Character diversity (making for an even MORE believable world)
-A plot hook that got me to CARE about the narrative

    Cons:
-Somewhat poor pacing through the story
-Unfortunate ending I was expecting more closure from
-An antagonist with no redeeming qualities (In my opinion, as I've heard mixed things about them)
-A segment of the game was kind of pointless and did not accomplish much (again, in my opinion)
-Gameplay identical the original game, with very little experimentation

TL;DR This game is worth a play if you liked the first one, but expect some... interesting approaches to story telling.

In general, this game fulfills realism in a post apocalyptic world very well implemented, although the characters do not have a true development or as a player, we cannot empathize with each of them, we must take into account He says that the world of the last of us is a devastating world, in which nobody has a dignified or epic death as some would like, since it is a world in which anyone can die at any time.
Regarding the narrative, I can honestly say that there were some "holes" and too many coincidences for this to happen as it did, but this is not entirely a bad script, since it explains different perspectives of characters.
It does not deserve all the hatred that this game is currently receiving since as many say: "You can love or hate this video game", so I reiterate. It is a misunderstood masterpiece.

I believe that Joel deserved to live at least until the middle of the game. Flashbacks Ellie is the best in the game, very touching and cute scenes. The end of the game is very I would like to kill Abby, and I didn’t seem to want to kill her because I did not empathize with Abby, but Leo because he would have lost the only loved one in his life. Neil Drakman left the ending open and I would like to see the dlc or the final part in this game.

P.S I would like more Jackson or joyful memories from Ally's life. The game left mixed feelings, but because of my sympathy for Ally and my love for the previous part, I will give a positive assessment. I still fell in love with this part, for the positive and negative emotions I had.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay is very similar to the first game, I enjoy it but it is a little repetitive. There were some improvements over the last game but it is still mostly sneak, strangle, hide, repeat, with a few decent shootouts included.

Unlike many people reviewing here, I really enjoyed the story. I think that the early death of Joel was a gut-wrenching moment which gave justification for Ellie's pursuit and her slide into a desperate sense of revenge. I think that the storytelling with Abby helps to show that the characters in this game are not "good" or "bad", but instead are morally grey with their own justifications for their actions. Early in the game we are made to hate Abby, but we are shown that she has justifications for her actions that very much match those of Ellie, and we see her character soften when caring for Lev, in a way that mirrors the relationship of Ellie and Joel. I think that many don't like the plot because of their affection for Joel as a character, but I didn't feel that his death was a plothole, but instead helped to drive the overall message of the game as well as showing how brutal this world is.

Overall I think it is an excellent storytelling game that is also set in a beautiful and detailed world. My criticism is only based on the lack of advancement in the gameplay.

This game suffers from some serious pacing issues being over 20 hours long and having serval narrative stops that drain all the momentum HOWEVER the game is so strong combat and character building wise that Im still inclined to rate it highly. It is nt as got as the first (though what sequel is?) but it still really enjoyed it and found myself attached to most of the characters. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A brilliant game, but marred by inconsistency and a disappointing plot. The gameplay, performance of the cast, musical score and graphics are all exceptional, however in spite of them it’s watered down by a plot-hole ridden story; characters we know little to nothing about, unnecessary scenes and rash decisions by said characters. Abby’s storyline (seeing the story and setting from the antagonist’s perspective) I found interesting, if a bit drawn out at points. The ending, particularly, is the biggest problem for me: Ellie choosing to let Abby live rather than killing her as she vowed to do. I understand the idea that they may have wanted to implement about breaking the cycle of violence, but it was poorly executed in my opinion, especially given Ellie’s murdering of countless people during the game. Regardless of these faults it was a very enjoyable game. Perhaps it all will be worth it for a third instalment. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved The Last of Us and when I heard about a part 2, I was extremely excited. I watched all of the trailers, followed all of the news, and counted down the time until it would finally come out. I pre-ordered the game and started it up the minute it was made available to me. After playing for about an hour and a half, I was shocked and in love with the story. The next day, I saw all of these reviews saying it was an awful game and a "SJW" propaganda game. I wanted to keep a clear mind before I read/saw any analysis. I just finished the game yesterday and I would say that it was an odd experience. The story was done really well if you have the capacity to step outside of your own perspective. The fact that Abby and Ellie are the primary characters seemed an odd choice, until the story comes back together. Abby killed Joel, because Joel killed Abby's father (the doctor from the first game), and now Ellie wants to kill Abby because she killed her father figure. It is easy for us to pretend a boss/enemy is a worthless character, but when we know their stories, their actions, their friends, their culture, it becomes much more personal. I'm still digesting the ending of the game, which I initially thought was really bad (I still sway in that direction) but I'm wondering if a better understanding may come. People have complained about an LGBTQ+ agenda but they quickly forgot that Ellie was gay in the first game (so it makes sense that she is with Dina) or the transgender character (who doesn't appear until the tail end of the game and is very briefly discussed). It is unfortunate that telling a story equates to an agenda for some people.

    Story - 7-8/10

The gameplay was essentially the same as the first game but added some additional features which helped improve the experience (I loved the prone mechanic), and the ability for the dogs to track you was a great idea but seldom saw its vision in gameplay. Overall, the improvements outweigh the repetitive aspects.

    Gameplay - 5-6/10

Graphics were incredible, of course 9/10

    Overall, 8/10

The first game was clearly superior to this game, not that it means the Last of Us part II is a bad game. Game series evolve and have to build off of previous formulas, when the first game of your series is a solid 10/10, it makes the job to blow the minds of your fans extremely hard.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved every minute of this game. Great storytelling, plain and simple. Once again, Naughty Dog uses their platform to their advantage. We already love Ellie from the first game, and now we follow her on her quest for revenge, but it’s not so simple. People aren’t simple. Naughty Dog puts us in control of another player, Joel’s murderer. We want to hate her, but she is in Ellie’s place too. Naughty Dog makes us empathize with her, leading to a confrontation that will leave the player worried for both parties, and conflicted with every step forward and bullet shot. It would be easier to stay with Ellie, to hate Abby, but not nearly as interesting. Naughty Dog forces Ellie, Abby and us, to confront our impulse to get even, to do violence. Violence begets violence, but a selfless act can also be contagious, and we’re all just people trying to survive. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful graphics and world, incredible atmosphere and music, fun combat, and terrifying horror elements. The game is littered with beautiful and heartbreaking moments, and wonderful characters. The story is told beautifully, despite however “cheap” that story may be as others have claimed.

The story has been criticized, but after some time to think about it, I am more fond of it than when I initially finished. The story isn’t meant to be fulfilling, it isn’t meant to be a happy ending. The story aims to make you feel the pain and emptiness of the post-outbreak world, while highlighting the complexity of the people in this world. Abby has a real and understandable reason to kill Joel, reflecting how Joel had a real and understandable reason to save Ellie from the hospital (killing Abby’s dad in the process). Although it may be painful for us as players, it’s an open and brutally honest take on the cycles of violence that plague the world of TLOU.

Where I think this game falls apart is the characters on the WLF side of things. Through the 10 hours you play as Abby, the game attempts to make you realise the pain that Ellie’s crusade brings into the world. And from that angle the story works, however the execution of the characters that are suffering from these effects falls short. None of them are as like-able as the characters from Ellie’s arc, and this causes the story to fail at the emotional high points of Abby’s arc.

Graphic: updated engine of Uncharted 4, that's good.
World: a detailed world, better than in the first game.
Script: I understand what Druckmann wanted to get, but sometimes it didn’t work (for me, cause, in my point of view, occasionally the script has illogical parts and looks weak). Flashbacks - the best part of the game script, bravo. Gameplay: is updated gameplay of the first game.

Gameplay: is updated gameplay of the first game. Looks good, but a "survival" difficulty is not balanced as well as in the previous part: in the middle of the game I had the opportunity to play aggressive because I didn't face up to the situation where ammunition or supplies were running out.
Hate and hype around the game: I wouldn't have noticed some things if the game hadn't been hated on the Internet. Think about it.

I'll replay this game in the near future. Probably, I'll find new things of this story for myself.

I think the game is really emotive, I did liked it, the story is really good, the ending was bitter, Ellie pays a lot, it has some story flaws and some deus ex machina, but, I do understand why is this, besides those flaws on the story telling, I think the narrative is really good and the gameplay was superb, I didn't like to play as Abby since she was the antagonist, but, besides that, I think that the Abby's story is great, because this wants to say that no one is absolutely good nor bad, and the game shows the destructive cycle of revenge and how it can destroy someone that does not wants to let it go, I liked how smooth the gameplay is and how immersive it is, also, I liked how the game mechanics is so sweet that you can use your own imagination on how you want to confront the enemies, I really liked that is not so stealthy like the first one, it contains some action scenes that are awesome, I really liked the ending because it is bitter and close Ellie's and Joel's story, I can't wait to play it by 2nd time with more detail, I do recommend to play it until the end and analyze carefully the story after finishes it, because, I don't think that people who didn't finishes the game nor analyze it carefully may has a more accurate opinion, I really recommend to give it a chance Expand

Expand

This game is not perfect, but give it a shot before coming here and reviewing the game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really believe that a 3.5 rating from "gamers" is unfair to The Last Of Us Part II, considering the graphics and gameplay are amazing. I spent a lot of time appreciating the realistic textures of the characters, their clothes, bags, etc. It was really impressive. BUT I also don't think it's a 10/10 game because, while the story didn't have a lot of flaws, the ones they do have are really important for the player's experience. PS: I avoided all spoilers and biased reviews until I finished the game to not form an opinion that wasn't my own. I also study film, so I also understand the perspective and intentions behind the screen.

Let's start with what people are the angriest about. Joel's death. When it happened, I was in denial until I saw his grave. But honestly, through a storytelling point of view, it makes sense to put this as the driving force for Ellie's new adventure. The game does NOT lose the Joel and Ellie dynamic since we get flashbacks and answers that we had from the ending of Part I. Do I think there could have been other alternatives to his death? Sure. Joel could have been kidnapped or Tommy could have been the one to get killed, but it wouldn't have had as much impact for the player. It would've just felt like another mission, an objective. It wouldn't have felt personal. While his death wasn't heroic like a lot of people wanted it to be, it's completely realistic. Joel killed a lot of innocent people for selfish reasons, there was bound to be consequences.

For me, the biggest flaw of the game is the unbalanced change of perspectives. While we switch between Ellie and Abby in the first hours of the game, that stops after Joel's death and I think that was a terrible choice. Giving us like ten hours of Abby (a dislikable character until we meet Yara and Lev) all of the sudden is really overwhelming. If we had switched in between Ellie and Abby throughout the whole game, it would have definitely been a much more enjoyable experience, not to mention the routes for Abby are extremely long and should have been cut short. I also felt that a lot of Owen's parts were unnecessary, they don't really add something meaningful to Abby's story and he comes off as a really plain guy. I would have rather spent more time with Yara and Lev.

I really loved the new secondary characters and their backgrounds, Dina, Jessie, Yara and Lev. I don't believe there was anything political about it. A lot of people (mostly conservative white people) think that showing two girls kissing, a Jewish girl, a trans men and many characters of color is something worth being upset about. Please learn to listen to EVERYONE's stories, don't hate others because you've never been through their experiences and because they don't reflect who you are. You gotta be empathetic and open up your mind to what happens outside of first world countries. These minorities do exist, but they are finally getting some decent visibility. Human lives are not politics.

The game also gave me a lot of time to reflect about how revenge can drive people insane to the point where they give up everything that mattered to them. After Ellie leaves Dina and JJ by the end of the game, all she does is have a pathetic fight with a weak Abby and she realizes just that. Killing Abby wouldn't give her peace or Joel back. Ellie just had to learn how to grief for Joel and that's why she finally broke down once the fight was over. Unfortunately, her selfish decision had left her alone. I really appreciated and loved the symbolism with the guitar Joel gifted Ellie. Leaving the guitar behind was like moving forward from Joel's death instead of not dealing with your feelings. While it's obviously upsetting Ellie can't play like she used to, I do think it's possible for her to learn how to play the guitar again like a left-handed person would, a new beginning.

It's also crazy how in a zombie apocalypse people are killing each other instead of working together to stop the spread of the virus. It reminded me of the pandemic we're all living in right now. It's not that hard to wear a mask, to wash your hands, to social distance and stay home, but a lot of people don't just because they don't want to.

The greatest disease is humans' selfishness.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Graphics are some of the best I’ve seen on my PS4, the gameplay was also great. I loved trying to sneak around and be as stealthy as possible even though it normally ended with me having to go guns blazing. The story is the only place I felt the game faltered. Playing as Ellie was the best part hands down and the final hour or so of the game with her was my favorite part of the game. Abby I just never could get into as a character. I liked the majority of the characters surrounding her but for some reason couldn’t get to the point where I was rooting for her or even really cared. I’m totally fine with her actions in the beginning and was genuinely surprised when that scene happened and was curious to see her side of things. But in the end even after 10 some odd hours with her I still kept hoping she would be killed off. I’m replaying it again and maybe the second time around I’ll see things I didn’t before or understand things better. Still a great game overall though. Expand

I think the Abby part was a little long, that way it didn‘t feel like Ellie‘s Journey but like the Journey of both of them.
On the other Side i really liked the Story with Lev and the Scars. It made sense to show that the Character that killed Joel isen‘t pure evil. I think Dani and Jessie where great as well and i loved the short part with JJ, i think the Game portrays well how revenge-driven people sometimes will leav everything behind just for their revenge. I‘m glad that Ellie spared Abby at the End and you can really see, what everything did cost Ellie, with her not even having enough fingers left to play the guitar. The Szene with Joel was cruel at the End, she just wanted to work on things with him the night before he got killed... i think the story was great! Sure there were some small issues, like i didn‘t cared for most of the WLF’s bcs i new they are dead anyways. But yeah all in all it was nice storytelling.

Also, the music, lighting and rendering are all incredible! As well as the acting but i think that‘s needless to say.

I hope there will be a DLC where we search for Dina and JJ.

As someone who didnt read up on or see the leaks, I may have played the game with a more objective outlook than many others. I actually thought that Joels death, though brutal and depressing, made a lot of sense story-wise, and obviously drove the narrative of the game. I thought the graphics were strong, the gameplay was suitable, and the story, though not as good as the first, was still engaging/emotional. This game, like all, has its flaws. I dont consider it "near perfect" like most of the reviewers did, but it is ridiculous that the game has gotten so many 0,1,2,3/10 ratings. The graphics were great and the game play was pretty good, but there were some elements of the combat system that I found a bit clunky. There were a things that I felt were added to shake up certain combat encounters that I thought were kind of lazy- I'm not a fan of games that use the whole "oh no, you've lost your stuff and now have to have a hand to hand boss battle!" thing more than once, and this one did. It is not one with a positive ending, and a lot of people don't like that- which is understandable. Loved the game. Didn't really have any glaring issues. Only real issue I had was the odd pacing. I also didnt love the second half of the game but it was good enough

Let it be known that most of the user reviews on here are from people that didn't actually play the game. They were just upset by a couple of leaks they saw, probably watched some YouTube videos trashing the game so they can feel justified, and review bombed this game.

This review is coming from someone who tried to not see any of the leaks and spoilers and decided to play the game with an open mind. Maybe the game will be good, maybe it'll be bad. Won't know until I play it.

The Last of Us Part 2's biggest flaw is that it's a video game. The combat is actually good. It's largely the same as the first game's combat so there's nothing innovative here, but they added some quality of life improvements and lots of layers of polish that it ends up being way more fun than the first game. There's lots of different ways to tackle a combat scenario and it accomodates people of different playstyles. Outside the combat though is when the game starts to dip in quality. The locations are big and beautiful... but they're also big. With no enemies. And constant looting and looking for supplies. There's way too much downtime in the game and it really ruins the pacing, which for a game that prides itself on telling a cinematic story, horrible pacing can ruin a lot of great stories.

Which is why I believe that if this story was a film, or better yet a TV series, it would've benefited more from the medium it's in. As much as I liked the combat, I dreaded the in-between sections where there wasn't story or combat. This is also a very linear story where the player can't change a character's choice, you have to just let it play out. So even if the story is REALLY good, I still have to go though 2 hours of walking around, bits of combat here and there to keep me from being bored, until I finally get to the next cutscene to see how the story plays out. This shouldn't have been a game. This story does not benefit from being a game (despite the actual "gamey" parts being really good).

Of course EVERYONE is critiquing the story more than anything. Which makes sense, Naughty Dog prides itself on linear storytelling in games to be as cinematic as possible. You SHOULD worry about whether or not the game has a good story. But most of the people critiquing the story either hasn't played the whole thing or made up their minds before playing and were close-minded the whole time. So is the story good? Or is it as bad as people say?

It's good. Not a masterpiece. Not very original (but let's not pretend the first game was). However, the execution of everything: the actors, the music, the writing. It's all A+. I respect Naughty Dog for taking risks and trying to tell a story that could upset fans. Because at the end of the day this story makes sense in the world the characters live in. "I don't like this new character that I play as." Really? Because this character is REALLY similar to a character you like in the first game. Literally has the same qualities. I was invested in the story the whole way through. There were certain characters that I hated at first, but over time I realized they're actually well written, fleshed out, three dimensional characters. This is a great cast. Telling the story out of chronological order could have backfired, but it's so well written that it actually works. So the game in my opinion is an 8. The combat is REALLY fun, the story is good, the graphics are beautiful as is the music. The attention to detail is mind-boggling. And no matter your opinion on whether or not the game is bad, praise MUST be given to Naughty Dog for all the accessibility options. This hopefully will become a standard in AAA games going forward. The game could've gotten a higher score from me if it wasn't for the horrible pacing, all the walking around and opening drawers just to collect tape and half pairs of scissors. The huge environments aren't beneficial to your game if there's nothing interesting about them; no matter how good the graphics are. Also the over abundance of safes.

Tl;dr: Combat good, story not as bad as people say, biggest flaw is walking around being bored.

Even in Joel's last words, you knew it was a long time coming. Gameplay and NPC AI is better than the first game, but not revolutionary. Pacing was also kinda **** with the back and forth via flashbacks. On the plus side this game is more re-playeble compared to the first game, as it is more trophy friendly and more variety in how enemy encounters play out. This also has to do with how big and varied the environments are, resulting in varied and entertaining scenarios with enemies. A second play-through will not play out the same as the first one. Some moments looked like game-play sections at an E3 presentation. Set peace moments are one of the best of this whole generation, even rivaling that of Uncharted's, especially in the Abby sections where the WLF and Saraphites go all out and burning down an whole island. When Ellie killed pregnant Mel, was one of the most shocking gaming moments in history IMO. This game has one of the best cut scenes I have ever seen both on a technical and emotional level. While this game is not as good and revolutionary as the first game, it is still a solid game. While I didn't want to continue after Joel died, I am still glad I did. While this game doesn't deserve GOTY, for the ****ty pacing being the biggest reason, it still should be discussed for years to come. Expand

I absolutely hated it when it swapped back to her after the theater confrontation. "I don't care about her story," I kept saying to myself. I quit playing multiple times, but I came back to it every time because I wanted to experience the story for myself -- and I'm glad I did. If you had told me that by the end I would be begging Ellie to spare Abby, I wouldn't have believed you. It was quite the journey. Expand

This game is definitively emotionally difficult to process. I understand why people love it and why they hate it. ND said this game is not "fun to play" - well he was more right than he expected I guess. I give this game 8/10. I admit I was expecting something more epic after the first installment, but we get what we get. If this game's theme is to be brutal to the point it devastates even the player then I'm fine with it, I'm not gonna cry because the game turned out the way it did.

Lastly, I completely disagree with people who rate it below 6, as bad as the story may be viewed this game's mechanics, graphics & gameplay are on the next level, evaluations below 6 to me are purely emotional and undeserved.

A worthy follow-up, though not quite as good as the first game. Gameplay has been improved greatly with more fluid melee combat and the ability to jump and crawl. Also a few sections with some free-roam/exploration areas that are more open world than the first.

Story-wise, I think it does well to explore the price venegence takes on people and how trauma can stay with a person long after an event. It also does a good job of making you more sympathetic to characters you start off hating. After finishing the game, I was satisfied with the story, even if it ends on a fairly depressing note

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What to say about the follow-up to one of the last generation's most revered gaming experiences?

TLOU was a masterpiece of empathetic storytelling. The game was featured in academic papers, its ending endlessly debated, its stellar gameplay praised to the heavens. The critics and non-critics united in bestowing universal acclaim.

Rightly so in my opinion. The first game was lightning in a bottle.

TLOU Part II is NOT satisfying in the same sense as TLOU 1. That alone has created a storm of controversy.

But like or dislike, can anyone who has finished the game deny that the director, Neil Druckmann, has become much bolder, more confident, and more daring in his work when one compares Part II with the first game?

That alone deserves a great deal of recognition. Druckmann knew exactly what we wanted: a follow-up to Joel and Ellie's trek across America. Laughter and lament, ending with the flavor of a bittersweet heartbreak.

Yet he opted instead to give us something shocking and new.

I don't know if Druckmann deserves all of the credit for the new additions. There is a wider effort of inclusivity within the game which can be appreciated in the same way if we look at the pains that Naughty Dog took to include all sorts of accessibility options for those impaired of hearing and vision. Cultural inclusivity as well; LGBT characters are featured in starring roles in a subtle, finessed manner. I absolutely adored Dina, Lev and Jesse as new characters who were so damn cool just being themselves. I loved Naughty Dog's extra effort to tell inclusive stories in accessible ways.

    Onto the nitty-gritty:

If you are a 3-rd person shooter fan a-la- Resident Evil , you will enjoy the gameplay. It's the same as Part I, only much more refined and expressive. The addition of the dodge mechanic and prone stance were my particular favorites. There's also an 'encounters' option in the menu to jump right into your favorite fights.

Aesthetically, the game is simply a masterpiece of graphics optimization. You will sigh with pleasure when you wade into a puddle of water and see its glorious rippling reflections. There's just so much to marvel: after a while, you won't even bat an eye. Your mind will be so immersed that you simply forget this video game is rendering a lucid dream on hardware that is 7 years old.

The music, I must say I prefer Gustavo Santaolalla's music from the first game. Its melodies were more recognizable.

And lastly, the most important effort of all, is the story.

I cannot enjoy this game's story. And I am just so damn sorry to say it. Naughty Dog poured their hearts and souls, their sweat and their blood into this game. They are true craftsmen and deserve our appreciation.

Many people, including Druckmann, have remarked that this story is NOT about revenge, but ultimately about forgiveness and about coming to terms with loss. I agree. TLOU Part II has done everything right in terms of narrative direction. Druckmann and Halley Gross's characterizations are considerate and complex.

But I really have to question, at the end of this journey, what Ellie has learned. What she has gained from her tragedy. And I am left with the dispirited answer that she has learned how to move on. How to heal from her terrible wounds.

What does this story say about revenge? That it is hideously messy, that it swallows up innocent bystanders and corrupts the original noble impulse of honoring our loved ones? That it brings us to the brink of true evil, of the crime of denying others their humanity?

But we already knew all that. We well understand, as adults, the consequences of taking revenge. And who hasn't thought about killing someone over a perceived slight, over a heinous injury? Is it terribly satisfying to recognize that our mortal enemy is also full of fear and love, like us? I felt it was a redundant lesson.

Instead, I felt that as an audience, we yearned to understand the meaning of Ellie's life. Joel hinted that he knew this meaning when he told her that he would have saved her all over again if given the choice.

If Part II is about moving on, then it's largely moving on from the legacy of the first game. I can understand why Naughty Dog would choose to move in this direction. It's incredibly bold and unexpected.

But in my mind, Part II is a middle act in a greater story. And this middle arc was excessively violent, predictable and self-indulgent, as are most revenge narratives in my experience.

Since the prologue of Part II, Ellie has been merely reacting to her horrible loss, reacting to the actions of her friends and foes. But we yearned to see her grow up and to take her life into her own hands. We yearned to see her make choices that reflected the true worth of her singularly valuable life. I could not bear to see Ellie wasting the gift of her life on vengeance over and over again. I wish it were different...but it ain't.

The Last of Us Part II is not without flaws, but all in all, it is also undeserving of the current user score. Most scores need to be scrubbed without a doubt. That being said, I can see the game for what it is. Is it a masterpiece? Far from it. The Last of Us Part II is not without flaws, but all in all, it is also undeserving of the current user score. Most scores need to be scrubbed without a doubt. That being said, I can see the game for what it is. Is it a masterpiece? Far from it. Is it a blast to play? Depends on your definition. Does it deserve the hate from the fan base? Perhaps somewhat, but certainly not to the degree it’s been given.

The gameplay is an enormous improvement from the previous game. Stealth mechanics are far better: being able to craft silencers for the handgun is useful, hiding in tall grass to get the drop on enemy guards is exhilarating, and finally being able to craft arrows for the bow makes that weapon far more invaluable for stealth encounters. The crafting system is also greatly improved. Aside from the usual supplies – such as first aid kits, Molotovs, and bombs – arrows can now be crafted, silencers for the handgun, and improving your melee weapons restores them to full durability.

Skills now are greatly expanded, and training manuals must be found in order to expand your skill tree. Whereas previously training manuals simply improved durability of shiva and bombs and healing, now they unlock new skill trees to improve. Supplements found in the world still function the same, but now you have greater variety for how to build your character to better suit your playing style. Weapon upgrades have been simplified and improved: instead of just increasing ammo capacity or power in increments, each upgrade improves a single aspect of the weapon. An example being ammo capacity of the handgun: instead of increasing ammo capacity by 1 round over 3 or 4 upgrades, now it is a single upgrade of 4 rounds. Ammo reserves have been scaled back, but enemies now drop ammo more frequently.

Combat has been greatly expanded. You can dodge enemy attacks, greatly increasing survivability and combat prowess. Stealth does have greater emphasis in the game, but is not necessary. However it is strongly recommended since certain areas in the game have numerous enemies and can easily overwhelm you. Dogs are also great at tracking you, so it is also recommended to give them priority over other enemies in an area that has them.

Now we get to the most fun part to review: the story. ***DISCLAIMER: this review was written about more than halfway through the campaign, so all opinions here on out are subjective, and should be not taken as an endorsement for nor as bias against TLOU2. This is a spoiler-free review.***

The story begins 5 years after the events of the previous game. Ellie is older and more wise (and perhaps more jaded) in the ways of the world, and has been living in Jackson with a growing population. She’s made fast friends with a few people – namely on-again-off-again couple Dina and Jesse – and has been living her life the best way she can. However, the past finally catches up with her and Joel, and tragedy strikes in the most horrific way, which sets her off down a very dark path.

The game also introduces Abby, a former Firefly and current member of the well-armed-and-trained Washington Liberation Front, or WLF. She’s had her fair share of tragedy, and by the time of the main story of TLOU2, she’s become a ruthless soldier harbouring a hateful grudge against the man who had killed her father. She serves as a foil to Ellie, and the story of TLOU2 details the similarities and stark contrasts of both young women, both in terms of personalities and motivations for why they did what they did.

NOTE: I already knew what the storyline of TLOU2 was and what the main plot points were, so I already knew what to expect. I went into this game with an open mind, knowing what I knew, but have changed my initial opinion of the game since playing it as far as I have. I intend on finishing the game, and so far I can say that the game does not deserve either score it has received from both critics and users. As I stated, this is not an endorsement for nor bias against the game, Naughty Dog, or Sony Interactive. It is just my honest opinion, because people can and should form their own opinions.

The game design and world building is unmatched. The story can leave something to be desired. While I personally loved the "don't let grief consume you" story, it unfortunately falls into some cliché plot points and falls just short of the original. I enjoyed my time with the game and will likely play it again. If the original was a 10, this is definitely an 8.

It’s a strong message about revenge and the price to be paid and the reality of it. This isn’t your typical revenge movie where you just spend most of it just watching the hero gloriously picking off the villains one by one. The lines are blurred and it forces the player to go through some hard stuff. Obviously if you’ve played it you know you have to play as Abby for the entire second half of the game. This enraged me at first and I was still ready to kill her at the end no matter what. However by the time the moment comes, even though you don’t have the choice, I still probably would’ve stopped Ellie from finishing her off. The entire moment is huge and hits like a ton of bricks. Days after I realized....wow...if Ellie had just dropped her need for revenge and ignored Tommy, Abby would’ve died on that post where the Rattlers put her. That’s strong stuff Expand

The stealth mechanics were some of the best in any game I've played, mainly because they were more realistic than other games that use similar mechanics (but still offers a significant advantage to the player). For example, you'll have dogs sniff you out if you get within a certain detection distance and enemies can spot you from pretty far away. If you're in the grass, it doesn't completely shroud you from detection if they get close enough and you're in their line of sight. The AI is also pretty clever in this game, making for some tense situations. If you're quick enough and have good aim, you can silently take out enemies and avoid combat at higher difficulties. The thrill of sneaking past some of the absolutely horrifying monsters in this game combined with the factions hunting you down really gets the blood pumping.

I didn't have much of a challenge playing through the game. I played on hard mode my first play-through and had numerous occasions where I was fully stocked. There are some tough boss fights, but there are numerous autosave points to make fights easier. So if you like a challenge, you'd probably be fine starting out on survival difficulty honestly. Just make sure to explore and to move/kill from the shadows as best you can.

As for the more controversial topics, I liked the characters. They're animations and conversations seemed realistic, the facial animations were stellar, and the developers fleshed out most of the characters just enough to understand their personas and motivations. Obviously, the structure they chose just made gamers rage against the machine, hence the mixed reviews. Out of all the things that make this a 10/10 game, such as the gameplay, the visuals, character development, first openly lesbian couple in a game, references to the complexity of gender identity ( all of which wasn't in your face about it), the little details in the combat/easter eggs/environment , hilarity in the light hearted moments, the flashbacks with Joel and Ellie, the clever level design and AI, sound design and ambience.... ALLLLL that, and you **** up the structure of the game? ND could have kept everything they had here, restructure the game, and you'd have a definite 10/10, GOTY on your hands. Sadly, I have to painfully give this incredible game an 8/10 for this one criterion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Incredible technical work, impressive graphics, good story, good gameplay ... Without words, there are things that I personally have not liked either Joel's death or having to play with the character who killed dear Joel. I wish there was another death for him, but it's an amazing game Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
