The story isn’t bad, but I thought I’d experience the journey with Joel and Ellie. As for the Gameplay it is pretty much good. And in the end I don't know what to say, I mean I want to say I feel empty and sad. Please do the third part as soon as possible! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a great game that is heavily held back by its story in the second half. Overall I really enjoyed the game, the gameplay is enhanced from the first game and that is what's important to me. The graphics look nice too but that matters a bit less. The main thing holding it back for me is the story and the pacing, I hated the second half of it when I took control of Abby while the gameplay is the same it broke the pace by having us start over in progression and we have to play as the villain all of a sudden. To say it was a jolt is an understatement. I spent a good chunk at the start just killing her anyway I could. Knowing what she did I could not forgive her because she is a hypocrite. Her revenge is justified but Ellie's isn't. About halfway through playing as her I started to ignore it but I still couldn't get over it. Another thing that bugs me is the tacked on epilogue, the game should have ended in Seattle but it kept going, with Santa Barbra once again breaking the pace, and that is the main issue for me overall. However, I did enjoy my time with it and since gameplay is the most important thing for me in a video game I believe my score is fair. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is NOT a 0/10, review bombing isn't constructive. It's disrespectful to the hundreds of artists, programmers, musicians, writers, and game designers in general. Just because the story wasn't how you expected it to be doesn't mean the entire game is garbage.
That being said, I DO AGREE that this wasn't the direction the sequel should have taken. To me, this game feels like a spin-off rather than a direct continuation of Ellie and Joel's story. It is still however, an engaging and thought provoking story that, when you open your mind a little, really makes you question whether or not Abby deserves to be hated so much.

Well done Naughty Dog, I consider this game a masterpiece, but I can't shake the feeling of frustration about Joel. He deserved to have his story ended far better than what you gave him. But besides that, everything else about this game was top notch.

Everything in the game except for the story pacing and some of the character motivations are excellent. Like some of the best game play, graphics, animations, voice acting ever. The story faces some shortcomings, such as having some pacing issues, but the amount of flashbacks and especially the placement of them are not nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. The flashbacks almost always occur at the end of a sequence, and there is only one flashback that is in a tension filled moment. Overall a lot of the story beats that are controversial make perfect sense, and do NOT do a disservice to the previous game or its characters, and themes. The game does have pacing issues and it can be confusing as to what the game is trying to say. The last of us part 2 elicits equally powerful emotions as the first game did. The difference being these emotions are ones of anger and hatred, while the first game was of love, and redemption. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay so, I really really want to love this game. I’ve been waiting YEARS to finally hear more of Joel and Ellie’s story, however it pains me to say that you spend way to much time playing as people who aren’t Ellie or Joel.

I totally understand it from a design perspective, they wanted to throw a wrench into traditional storytelling and humanize the bad guys. However, this is a tall order when you’re trying to get the audience to sympathize with the character that just murdered 1/2 of one of gaming’s most beloved duos. This did not hit the way they intended it to, and it turns these segments into boring filler with no real weight or consequence. All in all, that’s pretty much my only gripe with the game. Gunplay feels a little stiff sometimes, but other than that, I really enjoyed my play through, and would most definitely recommend picking this game up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To the people genuinely looking for a real review of the game, please don't take the people who leave 0/10 reviews seriously, they most likely didn't play the game and probably just watched someones play through on YouTube, and so they didn't get the same experience as someone who played it themselves.

Now for my review. Story Wise: The game was good, some parts were dreadful to play. But the story was great and I feel like if the ending made you feel some type of way then I think it did its job. I felt empty and lonely as the end of the game. Don't you think Ellie felt the same way? She's probably asking herself the same thing we asked ourselves, "now what?". The same people saying the game is trash are probably the same people who think Call Of Duty campaigns are master pieces where main character ends up fighting the main villain and crawling towards a weapon and flying away in a helicopter. This game is the truth. You didn't get the happily ever after. This is a tragic hero story, where the main character doesn't win. Not all people die a heros death. Just like Jesse was killed with no thought, it was the same way we killed Abbys dad, without a any thought, to Abby Jesse was just an NPC, he's not important.

    What the game did wrong:
1.)Owen, mans was so boring to me he was just some average guy, his voice was monotone and his dialogue was pretty dry.
2.) I feel a lot of people felt the same way, when Abby pulled up to the theater with her gun drawn at Ellie and there was mad suspense in the air only to cut 4 years ago and have us playing as Abby. They made it super obvious what they were doing and a lot of people noticed it too and that got me tight, they were trying to make us feel sorry for Abby or look at it from her shoes, but to be honest they placed that part of the game at a point where nobody cares about Abbys sad back story. It wouldn't have been a problem had they probably done that flashback earlier in the game. Also they dragged Abbys part of the game way too long it killed the suspense and it didn't make me want to play more, I sometime felt like rushing through the encounters or getting off because I really didn't care about Abby. However... over time even though I know that's what they were trying to do.. I did begin to sort of kind of like Abby. BUT Fighting Ellie as Abby was torture!!! I really though I was going to kill Ellie but that was fun and brought back the suspense.
3.) I got tired of Seattle and I didn't like how we kept going to the same places back and forth even though story wise it made sense. I guess I really just liked the idea of how much we got to travel in the Last Of Us Part 1, and the different weather and seasons.

    What the game did right:
1.) Enemies. Big improvement from the first game, 3 new infected types, Stalkers, Shamblers, and the Rat King. Stalkers were my favorite infected type, they had me scared to go through a door, or turn my back, especially when I can hear them running and crawling around with my headphones on and lights turned off. Shamblers were annoying but they changed up the dynamic so they were welcomed. The Rat King, was just so appealing and terrifying to look at, it makes me wonder how many other unique infected are out there in the world. They also added Hefty humans in the game that took more damage those were cool I guess.

2.Combat. Hand to hand combat was my favorite part of the game, I loved how fluid the dodging was and cocking my fist back and knocking a runner out. THE EXPLOSIVES SO SATISFYING. I loved how the enemies would just disintegrate and turn to pink mist when blown up instead of just rag dolling a full body in the air as if they were jumping on a trampoline. I loved how if you shot a clicker with a shotgun in its legs they would become handicapped and you could easily shoot them in head. Same goes for most enemies if you shoot at their arms, legs, or head, chunks or entire limbs would get blown off.

    3. Graphics/Art , Level design . Of course beautiful, some of the most aesthetically pleasing parts in the game were in Jackson I loved the snow and lodges, and Eugenes secret weed farm, and when there was a massive horde chasing us. The Sky Bridge very atmospheric and creative. The island when the whole place was up in flames it really felt chaotic. Ellies Farm I loved how tranquil it felt despite the sadness and anger that dwelled in Ellies head. Santa Barbra, just cause it felt like a whole new game and the filter was vivd and warm compared to Seattles grey filter. I loved how Ellie was about it, she had the bloody white tank top on, she was coming to play no games, especially the cutscene when she encounters the rattlers and she messes both of them up, and she's holding the SMG looking badass. The ending where theirs nothing but fog and water... beautiful really felt like the edge of the world, fitting for the final fight.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is far from perfect, but it is the sequel that TLOU deserved. Well, first of all I don't even know what to say about the graphics and the gameplay, it is simply the perfect evolution of what the first game had created. The amount of animations made for the combat and all the little features that were added, like the silencer, are breathtaking and make the gameplay feel dynamic and as fluid as ever, and therefore making one of the best 3rd person games ever (gameplay wise). Naughty dog really nailed the techinical aspect, but now the story...

I don't think that this game has a bad story, not at all, it has the best premise that a TLOU sequel can get, taking one of the main characters and making him pay for all the stuff he made in the first game is simply the only plausible motivation that would make Ellie seek revenge at any cost. But I agree that the way in which they did it was pretty bad, I get that the TLOU world is cruel and that death is always around the corner, but it's f*cking Joel. I don't think that Joel deserved that miserable death, maybe he could've sacrificed himself for Tommy or something like that, because it really made him look weak.

As I said, I truly don't think that the story is bad, I just think that it is poorly told. I really appreciate the ambition of ND by making us see all the sides of the story, because after all, the last of us is a game about people, and not about Joel and Ellie. But they sure as hell shouldn't expect us to be happy by making us wait more than 10 hours to progress Ellie's story. I simply don't get why they needed to add 2 campaigns that are so long, maybe they could've made 1 day with Ellie and then 1 day with Abby so that we don't get so tired of expecting Ellie's story to come back. It would have the same effect that the devs intended, we kill everybody that day with Ellie and then see Abby's point of view of who they really are, instead of killing them and only seeing who they really are 15 hours later.

People aren't complaining about the game because of the LGBT characters or the strong women in this game, it's just that the structure and pacing are horrible, and even though Abby's story is very interesting there's always that background thought wondering about what is going to happen with Tommy and Ellie that never goes away and that doesn't let us us enjoy Abby's plot as much as we should've. This isn't the game that we wanted, but it is the game that made sense as a sequel, I would give it 7.5 but since there isn't an option, I'm giving it an 8.

This game pulled the right strings for me, proving once again that games really art becoming a finely-tuned artform to rival cinema and traditional literature.

    Positives:

    - A beautiful, exceptionally crafted world with open-ish elements and graphics to die for. Really, it's worth purchasing for this alone. It really is a thing of beauty.
    - Interesting and realistic gameplay and levels that can genuinely be approached in multiple ways. I loved the options given. Take on an entire group at once, or sneak right on by. The choice is yours, but there are always consequences and risks. The level of violence, as some have commented on, serves a purpose to drive the central theme home. So you want to cause suffering as a player but you don't want to deal with people choking on their own blood, begging for mercy, having to gun down dogs? Grow up. This is the apocolypse.
    - A storyline that will challenge your perspective, if you're open to it. If you want formulaic UnCharted-style gameplay, this most certainly isn't it. An eye for an eye most certainly leaves the whole world blind, and while the central themes of this story are as Dostoyevsky-esque you're like to find in this game, it's... Well, complicated. It's not fun, it's not light-hearted. It's rough. That doesn't mean it's not worth it though.

    Negatives

    - Unlikeable characters that sometimes lack common sense, and few weird turns and inexplicable actions taken by the characters. But this hasn't changed since the last game. What the hell are they doing trying to kill a little girl to create a vaccine for a fungal infection? We can't even do that now! Why does Ellie hate Joel? Why does she wanna die so bad!? Why does Abby never even attempt to justify any of her actions to people, even though it would make her life easier? The characters can act stupidly at times, but this really hasn't changed too much since the first game. - Use of "none-normie" protagonists. You know what I mean when I say this. It's statistically off and obvious. I didn't dislike it, it just felt... Unrealistic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have just finished the game a few hours ago and I want now to explain the reason I give TLOU2 this mark. As me, many people are here giving reasonable reviews (not all people). I feel pleasant but at the same time a little bit frustrated. When you play the video game, you feel it is like a drug, because you cannot stop playing it. Game play is amazing, graphics are incredible and video game's duration is unbelievable. So, what's the problem with this game? Story.
We have been waiting this video game for 7 years. I'm a fanatic of the first video game and its probably my favourite video game. I feel disappointed to see decisions they decided to do at this time, deciding to kill probably one of the most beloved characters of the games history. But that's not all, because they bring him to us with flashbacks that obviously don't treat him in a good way. REMEMBER THAT JOEL KILLED FIREFLIES TO PROTECT ELLIE BECAUSE HE LOVED HER! Was it too difficult to give us what we want for the game? I honestly say you they don't get their pretended message like they did with first game, or at least I don't understand it...
But that's not all, because they make us to play with the character that killed Joel during a long time in the game, trying to humanize her with different moments along her gameplay, and they didn't get their target, because I honestly feel during her gameplay she was the killer of Joel, feeling really disappointed every step I walk with Abby.
I don't want to talk about the final, because I think it's not necessary after reasons I give on this review. I only want to remark that I dislike a lot Joel's cruel death, and the way the told us all the game (the narrative), finishing review giving my actual marks:

The game takes some dodgy steps with story and character development, but before we get there, let's praise the objective extraordinary achievements elsewhere.

Graphically it's incredible. I compared with the first game on PS3 which was also an 'end of console' title and the difference is bigger than I'd imagined. The detail in the environments is extraordinary with every house, office and shop being unique and full of environmental stories. And there are dozens and dozens of them. The frame rate is consistent. The animations are breathtaking and specifically the blending and contextualisation of actions means that the characters really seem to exist in the world.

Audio is wonderful. I love how the floors sound different as you walk around buildings, giving a sense of architecture and physicality. The enemy barks, now personalised, along with musical stings and variable treatment of effects, perfectly communicates emotion and threat as you play. The music has a lovely duality; a kind of peace versus destruction vibe.

Gameplay is more polished than before but much the same. It tends to suffer from presenting multiple options when really stealth is the only one that makes sense. And there's a repetition with creeping up behind enemies to stealth kill. If the enemies were a bit less lethal then other strategies might have felt more consistenly feasible. But there is at least a freshness in the contrast between encounters, achieved through level design. One encounter with enemy X will be indoors between tight spaces and occluding walls, the next time you meet enemy X will be open and flat with lots of grass.

Ellie has new abilities which add to the variety. Running and jumping yield some brief Uncharted lite platform sections, there's the addition of a new physics rope (which is a technical marvel if not used in a particularly imaginative manner) and lying down in the grass or under cars adds some useful strategic choices.

Crafting and resource management continues to be well balanced although a strange design choice (which I hope they patch) means you can't fill some items to max if you have 2 spaces and crafting would add 3 items.

The story has some issues. In an alternate universe there's a Last of Us sequel that's played safe. There'd be some threat to the new town where Joel and Ellie are living. Maybe Joel is injured and Ellie has to go off and find help. Along the way she encounters people who tell her the truth about what Joel did in part 1 and Ellie faces emotional turmoil about what he's done. Now there's a chance she can still do the right thing but she must choose between going off to find the Fireflies or continuing the happy life including love interest that she's found.

This is not the path that Naughty Dog chose, and that's not inherently a bad thing (who wants a predictable story) but it is a risky one.

The structure of the story is a little different too. It's non-linear, with time jumps and flashbacks that occasionally add energy and pathos, but more often slow the pace and dilute character motivations. Unlike Part 1, there's less sense of meeting interesting characters along the way, with most of the cast you 'meet' having been introduced one way or another in the first hour.

I found that unlike the strong narrative driver of part 1 (get Ellie to the Fireflies), the objective here was either entirely absent (side quests for a few days until the calendar brings the next event) or was hard to buy into. Indeed, the entire plot is driven by two decisions/impulses respectively by two major characters (guess who) which seemed out of character, especially after later flashbacks.

To be fair, I didn't agree with a couple of Joel's choices in the first game. It's an interesting question for game designers, whether or not they need to bring an audience with them like this.

For me it felt like they missed a chance to tell a story that could ONLY be told in their world; be it something about the virus or Ellie's gift.

My final comment is on the violence which is so extreme and draining that I couldn't fathom the point of it all. There are videos on the internet of real human on human violence that I choose not to see. The level and amount of violence here exceeds anything on TV or film. And not only does it bother me as a player, but I also worry about ND's team, who have clearly given so much time and effort to this extraordinary world and must have had to view terrible things for months on end to deliver this.

If there's a lot of focus above on story it's because this was a strength in part 1. But they were telling a simpler story; a giant fetch quest (take Ellies from A to B) with zombies (OK, 'infected') and interesting characters along the route. Here the ambition was larger and it may have fallen flat. That does not make the game redundant; in fact I've not enjoyed a AAA so much in years. Did they bite off more than they could chew?

It did well in keeping with the first game’s ending and giving it a twisted continuation. It made it feel like Joel’s decision was bad and actually made you think if it was right or not. I feel as if every decision made by characters seemed reasonable because it actually did add up in the end. I feel as if it was a little shaky, which is why I can see all the hate towards it. But overall I believe it was a good game. Maybe the journey isn’t over yet. I would honestly like to know where Naughty Dog takes this. But I guess for now we wait. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game sits somewhere between a 7 and an 8 for me. It's no where near the masterpiece that was the first game, however it brings to the realities of living in a post apocalyptic world.
Most people hate the story, and understandably it takes away one of our favourite characters, that we've come to love over and over again with the first game. Using a character we have no knowledge or love for to kill Joel is upsetting to say the least. The game then forces you to walk a few miles in Abby's shoes, to make you feel a sort of empathy for her. Whilst I continued to dislike Abby throughout the game we saw her begin to change. Where she had been lost before, her only purpose to seek revenge, now she wants to do some good. The character building was slightly weak, she had a very back and white attitude within the first few hours of gameplay and seemed to take great pleasure in killing, which is the complete opposite to Ellie.
Abby is somewhat a reflection of Joel. When we first met Joel he was selfish and only did something if something was in it for him. We see Joel develop over time as he is made to take Ellie on this journey. I see a lot of this in Abby when she meets Lev. Her goals and perspective changethroughout the game, and her journey becomes about hope of a new beginning.
There are weaknesses in the story. I for one did not like the idea of trying to kill Ellie as Abby. Why the developer thought this was a good isea, I don't know. I still disliked Abby at this point and it was my least favourite part of the game.

Technically the game is stunning, the combat controls were more responsive, and added enemies with new infected and dogs created new challenges. Some quite brutal. Speaking of brutal, the violence and savagery are pretty intense. Jump scares are used to heighten a situation, but not used so often that it loses impact. The story was divisive. I get it. You are making choices and taking actions that are well beyond normal human behavior. Yes there is a trans character. It isn’t Abby. Abby was humanized in her journey. The ending upset a lot of people. I thought about the end result of a series of choices that make sense. Ellie was fully warned before the final crusade what would happen. It came true. No one gets a happy ending. Considering the story beats and revenge at all costs, having nothing left seems fitting. For this sort lesson, repercussions were necessary. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For me this game was amazing, I know it’s like a bandwagon to hate on it because of killing Joel and the supposed “crappy writing.” Yes there could have been more expansion of narrative on some parts to flesh out the story more but overall the story and gameplay where amazing. This game is not a story of happiness, it’s a game that shows you the consequences your actions have, to many people don’t care what they do in video games it’s just complete the objective no matter the cost and move forward, that was the entirety of the first game as Joel, kill everybody in your way to get Ellie to the fireflies and then kill all the fireflies to save Ellie, those actions have repercussions and that’s what we deal with in part 2. Naughty Dog wanted to show the players that even though you play as a character and love them, that in your eyes they are the hero and are amazing, their actions are not heroic, their actions are not without consequences. That’s why I actually grew to like the dual narrative of Abby, it’s not a section to make you like her and her group, it’s a section to make you see the lives you are ending, the dogs you may be killing in the game, it’s to show you the weight of what Tommy and Ellie are doing by killing all those people, and yes the WLF aren’t saints either but they are humans with their own lives, ones that go to the gym or some may have children in school. This game wants to open your eyes to the other side of your actions, where as you may see them as validated, the people on the other side may see you as a monster. For this reason I see the ending as needed, it was not Ellie’s right to kill Abby, if she had killed Abby then the game would have been for nothing, nothing would have been learned and then it would have created a truly bad game, but in her not killing Abby it shows that Ellie has grown and that she knows what she does can have consequences, that if she kills Abby then later Lev could take revenge and later down the line kill her and cause another wave of violence. The game is meant to end the cycle of violence created by Joel in the first, it’s meant to show for new beginnings and for a hope on the future. For that I continue to love Naughty Dog and their ambition to create such raw and emotional games, ones that make you think on a deeper narrative, not just kill until you get to the next location and kill again until you finish the game. I applaud them for taking such a huge risk and succeeding with it, and I can’t wait for any of their future projects. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having finished the game from start to finish, overall the game feels decent. Graohics, sound, animation, gameplay, responsiveness, all feel amazing. And works wounderfully! Even reflections in mirrors and water were kinda tripping me out So story...it is passable, the motivations behind characters actions make sense within the context of this post apocalyptic world. Even if certian things characters did that i did like, aka Abby killing joel, having played Abbys side it makes total sense she'd want to kill joel. The ending. Well i didnt hate it. I certianly didnt like it, but i dont think it was bad. I just didnt like how it ended but yet again it made sense for the world and story. Overall though there are a few things that just seemed a bit kinda shoehorned in, or that its inclusion didnt make enough sense. And abbys section felt the most guilty of this. Biggest question, why did she suddenly have such a massive change of heart just because they saved her? A change of heart, sure. But it seemed way to overblown and drastic and felt a bit too forced. They could have done a better job making it seem a bit more believeable. Then again it took place over like a day and a half so eh. By the end part of the game i can understand their closeness by that point of course. Just happened to drastically at the start imo

Fun, passable, mostly enjoyable story. Kinda drags in some areas, but overall it isnt as memorable as the first one. But i did enjoy this one thoroughly. Ill for sure be replaying it to platinum, but not sure if id play a 3rd time. Though if complete enhanced for ps5, yeah id play it again. I gave it a 8 because it is a pretty good game. Isolated from everything external to the game, its very good as a game. It is a bit rough around the edges. But i honestly can see other peoples criticism of the game, and i can understand why they felt that way. But for me i did enjoy this. Not as much as the first, but i am very happy with the overall product.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics (10)- Obviously this is a naughtydog game. The graphics are spot on and so is the detail.

Gameplay (10)- New mechanics enhance the experience of fights and although I don’t like killing dogs (RIP Alice) I liked their addition as a new challenge to play around

Joel’s Death (5)- His death fit well into the story and the themes it tries to tell. The only reason I find it so difficult to see and play is because I love this character so much and his death isn’t exactly pretty. When Ellie turned up I felt like I was the one pleading for Abby to stop

Abby (7)- I didn’t mind playing as Abby. I found the parallels between her and Ellie an interesting addition and I liked the insight to the WLF vs Scars. Also who doesn’t like playing fetch. But that sex scene was weird like where did that even come from.

Lev (8)- I really enjoy Lev and Yara’s story. Although having Lev kill his mum seemed a bit extra. Felt he had enough trauma already but I can live with that.

Ellie (7)- I love Ellie but I probably love the first game Ellie more. Some of the decisions she makes is just frustrating like stay at the farm! Although her letting Abby go I wasn’t mad about because I didn’t want Lev to be alone going forward in the story.

Ellie & Dina (7) - Some flashbacks being in different areas could have helped the relationship feel more real but I liked the patrol action with Dina at the start of the game a lot

JJ (10)- We defintally know who the dad is.

Overall that would give the game an 8. Although I enjoyed the game (as well as the story) I still found the ending and other aspects to be very bittersweet. However, my favourite parts of the game were the flashbacks, the new Ellie style of combat vs Abby’s punch infected to death technique and the guitar was also fun to play around with. The game doesn’t deserve the hate it gets I didn’t find it to be that bad. For me the origional was a 10 and is still better than this game plot wise but that doesn’t mean this game is bad.

Tbh I think that everyone is mad about Joel's death, personally I think it's brilliant because while you start playing with ellie you just want to kill Abby but when you start playing like abby you realize that Abbys feelings towards Joel are not that different. And you find out that maybe if you were willing to kill someone who killed a dear one then they can think the same way. It's really a good game Expand

Expand

I was exposed to the spoilers well before the game released like so many, and although I was bummed out over the leaks, I kept my pre-order and beat the game the other day. To me, the first game was a certified 10 out of 10, no questions asked. Truly one my favorite games ever, both on PS3 and PS4. I never felt that the game needed any type of sequel. If anything, a prequel showing Joel's journey from Texas to Boston would have been a great idea, seeing his falling out with Tommy and his bond with Tess.

Anyways, I was very excited for Part II despite feeling the game just wasn't necessary. Overall, I felt myself finally getting sucked into the story as playing as Ellie and her journey throughout Seattle. But this attachment to the story started to fade when Abby's story was the main focus for the second half of the game. I just never felt that interested in her story or the side characters involved in her plot.

To me, that's the biggest reason why I gave this game an 8: the story. It just didn't captivate me the same way the first part did. Everything else like the gameplay, the looting, crafting, graphics, sound, atmosphere...it's all there. The story just wasn't that interesting to me at the end of the day. And because of that, I really don't have a desire to replay it anytime soon.

I lost track of how many times I played through the first Last of Us, and maybe I will revisit Part II some day on the PS5, but the story was just a mess at times and kept breaking any momentum I felt. It's still a marvel to think about in terms of game design and everything, but to me, it's not a 10 or even a 9 out of 10. Still a very good game and one that people should experience for themselves, but to go from one of the best stories in all of gaming to what I experienced this time, it just was a let down in my opinion.

I think maybe if the focus was heavily on Abby from the jump to build that attachment and momentum, I might find differently. But I enjoyed playing as Ellie and seeing those flashbacks with Joel.

Excited to see what Naughty Dog does next though.

After 7 years, here it is. The second part to Ellie and Joel’s saga. An outstanding story, with a strong core Last of Us gameplay and astonishingly impressive graphics. It is a fantastic achievement for all at Naughty Dog.

It is, however, a very obviously divisive game. There are many who do not appreciate the story being told by Naughty Dog, who would instead prefer a story that is so frequently told by many. Instead, we get something different. A compelling, heart-wrenching story with brilliant character design.

However, the game does have issues with pacing. It is perhaps clear that many complaints voiced could have been resolved if simple changes to the story’s structure were made. Make the flashbacks the start of the game. Introduce Abby and her backstory first, leading up to *that* event. Give the player to experience Ellie and Joel. Then, and only then, do we go further. If such changes were made, many of the “plot hole” concerns or issues with the flow could be resolved.

This is, ultimately, Naughty Dog’s game. Their vision. Their story. It is not ours to dictate. Just because we do not like the way it went, does not make a game bad. It does have issues, but it is, overall, a truly exceptional game.

    Well done, Naughty Dog.

The story is...complicated. And probably will leave you less than satisfied at first. But it is much deeper than many initial impressions and reviewers give it credit for. Personally, I don't think the developers were always successful in putting the player in the emotional spot that they wanted them and that caused some dissonance and probably poor reviews from some players. Two days after finishing, I'm still processing things. The game certainly doesn't end in a way that brings satisfaction to the player, but it does end in a way that closes the story and makes the point it is trying to make.

Kudos to Naughty Dog for putting out another intense, immersive, and utterly gorgeous game experience that took risks and pushed the player to look beyond themselves and into themselves to question what they find there.

The idea the devs have of the story was good but the execution is where they mess up. Some gameplay descions and character descions made will surely upset players which is the only reason in my opinion that gives the game this controversy. The ending might also not make it home for some but if you try to understand by the end the decisions Ellie and other characters make and the point of the story it will definitely make the game better for you.

What's more, I dare to say that it seems everyone is bought, no one asked how there is not a single negative comment in "crític review" section or how almost every single comment are 9 or above? In addition to how they are oddly contradicting the points that true fans complain about: the characters (Abby mainly) when there is a comment saying how we hate their poor introduction, their story and development, there are 4 or 5 more saying that they love the characters, when we complain about how the story mocks and spits in the face of the first game, they all shield themselves with the cheap excuse of: "If you don't like this game, it's because you're homophobic"
I´m pretty sure all of us who played and loved the first game never cared that Elie was gay. On the contrary, I loved the character, but no, they had to play that dirty card, blaming the community for being intolerant, just because the game was influenced by a person (I'm not going to say her name but I think everyone already knows who she is) who ruined the story just for wanting to put a progressive psychology in our brains, something that was very useless by the way, since the points where they try to be inclusive and make us understand the characters fail so brutally that nothing matters and makes us think that this script was written by a monkey on a desk.
A very bad game, a very bad introduction, message, story and character development, but, above all, a very bad treatment not only for the fans, but also for the workers who suffered terrible working conditions for nothing. The game´s tittle is "The Last of Us", I think it fits perfectly, because I hope that this game will be "The Last of Them"

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall I really enjoyed the game. The story, while not perfect, was masterfully done and it evoked a deep level of compassion from me for both main characters. It forced me to empathize with someone that I REALLY didn't want to empathize with. I eventually really came to like the Abby character, though I wouldn't go as far as to say that I accepted her. And I would say for good reason.

I had to sit back for a few days and really take it all in before I even deigned to form a final opinion on the game and while I felt cheated when the credits rolled, I came to really appreciate the story upon further contemplation. It's a story about love, loss and redemption. It's a story that makes you face the harsh realities of how it's like to go through the things that the MC's went through and what hatred and obsession can do to your psyche. It's a great game.
There were some things that I did not see the point to and it annoyed me a little since it felt like it could easily have been told in a different way and it would've told the same story, but it didn't detract from the story in it's entirety and I really appreciated all the characters.

From technical aspect, this game deserves almost full marks. The visuals are gorgeous and the sound design is phenomenal. There were small things that I picked up that were a little off but it didn't detract from the amazing job that the people at ND did. Well done.

Can't wait to play this game again after some time away from the game. I really want to sit down and try to understand and look deeper into the motivations of the characters and how it all ties together. That alone tells me that it's a good game. It makes you think. It makes you really sit down and have an internal debate to evaluate what you think and why you think it. I'm generally a one and done pony.

I do feel like the pacing in the story was a little off and that some scenes could have contributed to a more comprehensive story overall, if it were played at different times. That's mainly where my gripes lie. All the elements for a great story is there and had it played out in a bit of a different order I think it could have done a better job. Not that it didn't do a really good job regardless.

Would I recommend this game to friends? Definitely. But only if I know they have the ability to really sit down and think and deliberate about what they see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Any negative criticism of this game's story seems to come from saltiness that they killed Joel. Boo hoo. People claiming that this "killed the franchise". This was never meant to be a dragged out franchise.
In my opinion this was an excellently told story and, at least in my experience, they did an perfect job of setting me up to hate a character only to turn things around with a sympathetic second side to the story and end up making me feel more for Abby than I do for Ellie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like the game. Even those slow but beautiful moments. Graphics, no doubt top notch. Gameplay, it's just like the first game but with a few new mechanics. But what I really like about this is that it puts you in the shoes of who you thought was an ass-wipe. It puts you on the perspective of Abby and what she has gone through and what motivated or drove her to do what she did to Joel. Expand

I will start with the intro, Naughty Dog did what they do best, giving a player an unexpected/highly interesting intro to players to continue playing the game, they are very good at doing so, The gameplay, puzzles, characters were all perfectly made (Btw some characters weren't the same as the trailer, but every company does the same to sell their game, the only thing I would criticise wasI will start with the intro, Naughty Dog did what they do best, giving a player an unexpected/highly interesting intro to players to continue playing the game, they are very good at doing so, The gameplay, puzzles, characters were all perfectly made (Btw some characters weren't the same as the trailer, but every company does the same to sell their game, the only thing I would criticise was the fact that Joel was the one who held his hand around Ellie to keep her calm, when in fact it was Jesse. I see what they were trying to tell us storywise, showing that every story has to sides of it, but I wouldn't consider that players would be happy playing 10h as a character who killed our beloved character from the first game, Joel. This part of the game could have been a DLC in my opinion. The ending wasn't that great, I think if there was an option to choose either to kill Abby or let her life would improve the ending 10 times more, I think the only thing that this game is missing on is the value and the attachment to the story and characters of the game, An idea would be if Tommy was killed in front of Joel and Ellie, so Ellie had to track Joel down and help him to his destiny but then choose if Abby would die and take care of the kid or let Abby live and let the kid remember this moment. WE would also like more if we could have seen more of whats Ellies life is all about, The flashbacks were you played as Ellie with Tommy and Joel were so good that if the game had a lot of those and combine together to one story it would have been the greatest story game of 2020.
It isn't easy to make a game and I hate ppl hating on it bc of example pewdiepie didn't like it (Famous Youtuber), This game has a lot of good reviews, but it's overlooked by all the hate from Youtube that some famous Youtubers had made for this game, This game is one of the best-built game in mechanics, graphics, looks, solving puzzles, and well-made games out there, but the story is the part where it really hits this game bad.

Thx for reading; have a nice day :)

I overall had a good experience but I mean naughty dog could've done a much better job in terms of storyline but like I said above average game its not that bad die-hard fans will trash this game because of Joel's death but I mean if you look past that and give it a chance to take in everything it is a above average game that's all I can say

I decided not to cancel my pre-order on the hope that they were false because of my attachment to the first game. It turns out that they are almost entirely true but over the course of the game I changed my mind. At times I absolutely hated it, I even considered giving up on it at a certain point during first quarter of the game (I think you can guess what this was), but I decided to let the story play out and I am so glad I did.

Gameplay was pretty good, not great by today’s standards, but good enough. The stealth was fantastic though it’s too easy unless you play on a hard difficulty and it's pretty much the same as the original with a few upgrades (not a horrible thing). Graphics and scenery are incredibly beautiful, it could be the most intricately crafted and beautiful game I have ever played.

Story was a roller coaster of emotional reactions...REAL emotions. When Ellie finds a guitar and sings the first time it shook me to the core. The story had a few plot holes and significantly unlikely "coincidences" but they didn't ruin the story as a whole. Many parts of this game were nearly torture to play especially the 1 on 1 fights but that was clearly intentional. It's certainly not the story that we as fans of the original wanted or expected but it works (I think??).

The ending (no spoilers) left a bad taste in my mouth, but I think that was the point. I was disappointed by the ending at the time but in retrospect it completes the story and finalizes the overall message of the plot.

This was one of the best and worst gaming experiences of my life.... I don’t think I will ever replay it because I don’t think I could get through it. That said it was a work of art, brilliant, risky as hell, brutally violent and morally ambiguous. If you left a negative review and didn’t finish or even play the game you suck.

Structured weirdly for sure, but still enjoyable. Felt underwritten/under realized. Don't let some over talked elements over shadow the good. Cool dynamics with world building too- the other factions are interesting. But overall, they dropped the ball on story and the ending. Still a must play. Expand

Storywise the developers completly underestimated the passion we fans had for the character arcs in the first game. So yes, the decisions they made regarding those characters hit us where it hurt.
That does not mean that the reasons for making this story came out of thin air.
The story and its decision gives this world a bleak outlook. Wich ads to the immersion of the world. Gameplay

Gameplay feels more tight, but the aiming is still as blocky as the first game. You can opt for a auto aim setting if you like.
The dodge button works great and at times makes the fighting feel really cinamatic in al its bloddy glory.
It is brutal, it really is and i LOVE it. Reviewers judging that it is to real and make you feel sorry for taking a life is complete bs. Its a game and all the trailers prepares you for it. If you have a soft heart and cant handle it than dont play it after watching the trailer.

Graphics and sound. My word they nailed it. The sound is so realistic, guns actually sound loud like a gun should. Wich most games fail to deliver.
And the rain, wind and voices al sound so good. Especially with a surround headset.

This game got such an unfair score, both by users that hate the story decision and reviewers that gave it nothing but love.
Its not a perfect game. At times the story is to drawn out. End the ending should have ended a couple of hours before the real ending. (you will know why if you play it)
But the gameplay, sound and graphics alone makes this game a solid 8.
And if you feel like the gameplay is too repetative, than you yourself made it that way. The game gives you many ways to end that npc, fire, bullets, fists, arrows, bricks, knifes and al kinds of melee weapons. Not to mention you can stealthly take them out or go b*lls to the walls ham on people. Dont blame a game being repetative when you cant open your mind to other ways of play.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know there are tons and tons of review of the game, but just look at the dates they were written, maybe this review will help you understand the game better. I have beaten the game, I take my sweet time with it trying to enjoy every little piece it has to offer. First of all, I’m a HUGE ND fan and I did not watch any trailer or any leak that came out, I like to experience it like a virgin. I think the game is not a 10/10 and I hope you understand why. After the success of TLOU, ND had a mountain to climb to make this game. The first one made such a revolution that it almost seems impossible to make this game, but they did and decisions had to be made. I did like the story, excluding a couple of moments, and I think the gameplay was a very good evolution from the first. The developers crafted a very cool system that adapts to your play style; melee, guns or stealth. Acting and music was very very good, also the environments were something that I had not seen before in a game. It’s obvious that the game has many many good things, but were does it slide off? I think the structure of the story was something that could have been executed a little better. There were tons of flashbacks and jumps that sometimes get you out of the mood or want to put you in another mood. If the structure was compiled different I think the game could have landed better, leaving you with much stronger feelings about the characters and the cruel world you inhabit. First of all the death of Joel was something that I was kind of expecting, it seemed too good to be true to have another adventure with Ellie. I was expecting him to die eventually, but the game kills him in an CRUEL way that leaves you desiring revenge in the firsts hours. The game NAILS the first Half as Ellie in Seattle, it’s engaging, down right awesome and brutal. Ellie suffers, gets hurt, almost dies and sees this new side of the world, but is worth it because of Joel. As the player you keep going because you need to get revenge, you want those bastards to pay for what they have done. Suddenly you switch to Abby, this character that you have nothing attached to her and no investment. You see a little of her backstory and you start playing for 10 hours as her. It’s obvious that the developers want you to sympathize with her, in my case it almost worked, even though some of the cast from this side was a little bland and uninteresting. There were times when I just wanted to get through it to get back to Ellie, I just didn’t care much about Abby. But the objective of seeing Abby as a human being is something really brave from ND, she was getting revenge also. But I think that ND didn’t realize is that we have spent 12-18 hours more with Ellie and Joel and it’s only natural that we like them more because we feel we know them better. The part of the scars and the invasion of the island made me just feel there was no end to the game and I was never getting back to Ellie. Right to the ending, I didn’t dislike it and the more I think about it I’m more inclined to say that I like it. But there’s something that doesn’t feel right, I’m left a little bit sad and frustrated, but maybe it’s what they wanted me to feel. I don’t think it’s in anyway a bad game, 0/10, hell no. The worst parts are the length and the jumping back and forth with the flashbacks and between Ellie and Abby. But I think the game has more good and awesome stuff to put it right by 8/10 for me. It’s not TLOU but it’s a solid sequel and an awesome game from ND. Finally I want to end the review with Troy Baker is the *ucking man as Joel and Ashley Johnson as Ellie; really really loved both of them. Laura Bailey was also good, but I just couldn’t love someone that killed Joel. Expand

We can identify with the agenda simply because we can see ourselves making the same choices. In a world like The Last of Us there are no protagonists. As humans we can be flawed, insensitive, and selfish. Everything is perspective. Blind hatred and clouded judgment left Ellie with nothing; her trail of bodies didn’t break Joel back. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm going to say it and nobody is going to like it, this game got bandwagoned by a bunch of 12 year olds who didn't play the game and people who are genuinely angry about LGBT representation in the game. That being said, the beginning of the game made me believe that this is going to be one of the biggest letdowns in the history of gaming, such a beloved game having a bad sequel. I wouldn't blame someone for tossing out the game based purely on the beginning alone, with a combination of bad writing, pointless political agendas, unrealistic situations, killing such a loved character for what just seemed like shock value, (and still somewhat does) I really didn't want to play the game, but I played it because I wanted to see how Ellie's story ended. The first thing I noticed in the gameplay changes was the massive damn combat nerf, you never hit enemies first and it's next to impossible go combat stun, which is fine, but it makes the dodging mechanic become overused which can be frustrating at the beginning part. I personally didn't and don't care about the sexuality of the characters unless it plays a role in the story, but it was refreshing to have LGBT characters that didn't feel like pandering until you thought of the amount of the named characters who were LGBT. I had alot of friends in that community be annoyed by it, but since I'm straight I didn't care much. The story once it gets to Seattle and the character interactions between Ellie and Dina was honestly better then Joel and Ellie from the original game. The flashbacks and guitar scenes were genuinely some of my favorites on any console game, and the gameplay felt new and refreshing. As the story progresses and feels more linear and less open world, the story feels more straightforward as well, which was what made the first game so enjoyable. While I still have problems with the writing and everything from this part of the game, I really only took a problem with some world interactions and weird difficulty problems, such as being able to dodge a blister and easily destroy it with minimal materials compared to the first game, yet struggling with every single dog. This may be my fault as a player if I'm being honest, but either way it felt strange. On the other hand, it turned out to be more difficult then the first game, and more rewarding because of that. The story takes a nosedive as soon as you get back to the theater with Tommy. The game leaves on an absolutely massive cliffhanger, with Abby having both Tommy and Ellie at gunpoint. Then, they have you play a long segment as Abby, breaking the flow of the story. I took problem with this, as it shows the utter lack of writing ability that plagued the beginning of the game. I was extremely reluctant to play through as Abby. I felt like everything that happened was meant to just make us like her more, which made me end up liking her less. This portion of the game really tested my willingness to play. This all leads up to the biggest gripe with the story, how Ellie let's Abby live. Imagine if somebody you didn't know comes in and kills the person you love the most, and you travel miles and days to find them, killing dozens of people and torturing some. Then, when you finally meet the person you went there for, you let them go. That is exactly what happened and it was an attempt to subvert expectations that felt like something straight out of a Cartoon Network show. This is one of the most questionable, and in my opinion, awful decisions of writing that I've seen. The game was going amazing, it was fun, compelling, and enjoyable overall until this point. I would buy this game for myself, and recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the original, but I truly hope that the story is retconned or made non-canon. It feels about he same as the current Star Wars Sequels to me, a great franchise ruined with annoying writing. This game is worth the money, but I expected way more, and hoped for way more. It may seem strange for me to care about a game this much, but I genuinely loved the original story and felt strongly about this sequel, and it makes me disappointed that such mistakes were made. Thank you for reading to this point, have a nice day. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its a damn shame the reception this game got from fans.
After the simple, but well executed story of the 2013 play station last of us oriented around an middle-aged man losing his daughter after the outbreak of a global pandemic and reconnecting with his human side by befriending a girl of the same age 20 years later. changing from ruthless killing machine to ruthless killing machine who has a daughter figure.
its a really simple, shallow story that would be near impossible to f*ck up due to its basic setup. but people lost their minds over this fairly average game with a memorable heartfelt story, and this along a side naughty dogs continuous climb of excellence making hit AAA title after hit AAA title people were expecting something they would never get.

Last of us part 2 is a Good game. not a 'Sh*t' game and by no means a 'masterpiece'
people expected something they would never get, the last of us again.
The game is stunning, sounds like god, controls perfectly, is the single best animated game ever and is superbly acted. a lot of hard work was put into making the world. almost sweat shop conditions where people almost f*cking died due to naughtydog's crunch type game development. where people would be working up until 9pm. The game is worth playing alone for all of these reasons.

But people aren't mad about this. They are mad about the story.
So from an unbiased view, how is the story? pretty good. Better than most games you find in AAA titles such as Assassins creed or Gears of war or Call of duty or Days Gone. The only real issue is its slightly jarring structure and downright inconsistent pacing, that is being nice. but again most people aren't mad about that either. its the 'twists'and deaths and lack of character development.

Before i go into spoilers let me just say i do recommend this game, and i recommend it blind and i recommend that you play the game with the key word being 'Empathy'. You need a lot of that and a fair bit of emotional intelligence with a lack of bias to truly appreciate this game.
Okay, spoilers from this point on:

I would discuss the whole plot but i've sent my general thoughts and would just like to go over major plot points that people are pissed over and do my best to explain that these aren't poor decisions but instead are actual features of the narrative. starting with Joels death. people have called it 'pathetic' and 'rushed'. now whilst i somewhat agree with it being rushed it ins't a cheap move to make a plot its a natural and fair conclusion to what is a pretty terrible person. He is killed by someone that has more than all the right to kill him. the daughter of the surgeon who would've saved the world. Abby.
please remember the empathy idea i brought up. This story is about empathising with 'bad' people.

Second thing people are p*seed about is Abby. playing as her is very aggravating at first but as you play more and more so long as you don't b*tch and wine about tit the whole time and take your time to pay attention and listen to her side of the story, despite its annoying structure of turning back the plot and playing it all over again, you can empathise with her more and more. Abby feels terrible guilt for the brutal murdering of Joel and starts a journey to protect and help a brother and sister. and does so because of the guilt and because Abby sees herself in Lev (the brother) as he also had his family and home torn away from him. Like Abby had from Joels selfish acts.
so long as you take the time to appreciate her story you will find yourself interested and invested in what is essentially a re-telling of the last of us 1.

finally people don't like Ellies lack of an arch. to which i say, what the f*ck? the whole point of Ellies journey is that she has had her purpose in life taken from her by Joel, and finds her only motivation she has left is to kill. But not being strong enough emotionally she becomes more and more sad and psychotic, towards the very end looking like a genuine insane person with blood all over her terribly damaged body - reflecting her mind.
Ellie doesn't learn and has caused herself to lose everything she had. Not Abby.
Its sad to watch and play but its only natural this happens to someone, especially someone who's only 18 bear in mind. so her arch is shallow and she doesn't better herself but only worsens herself.

So to conclude, most of what people disliked about the game was just the point of it. Play this game again and really think whilst playing and you may just find a unique story with a few interesting new things to offer.

Theres lots to be talk about when it comes to this game. i rekon the story is amazing, the way it made me feel was so werid man never felt it before. The way Ellie gave up everything to kill abby is so sad and at the time i wanted Abby to die but now im so happy she didn’t. Abbys like Joel now from the first game looking after Lev. I see this game being like Whiskey getting better over time. Gameplay was prtty good but got stale at points. Soundtrack was the best part o along side the acting. Soild 8/10. Expand

Opionioni personali sulla trama o critiche personali sulla scelta di cambiamenti dei personaggi ,contano poco. il gioco é fatto molto bene ed é ricco di colpi di scena,Voto 8.

I really enjoyed the game, the story i was told. I felt the characters and their stories. Although, i think the time line should be a little different for the game to be perfect. Still, i was amazed and glad.

I can't tell that this game is an absolute masterpiece due to it's questionable (at best) writing and plot holes, but it's definitely not a garbage game, and it so good technically that I'd say it's 10/10. Story is mediocre though, 6 out of 10 for me, so I think 8 would be fair.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was just incredible. It was a heartbreaking, but foreseen event of Joel’s death in the near beginning. The game is a tale of revenge. Ellie seeks out the bad guy(girl) in here eyes which is Abby, to get revenge for killing papa Joel. Tommy is down to help, but decides to leave and do it himself, so you’re trying to find him and Abby and deal with things. Things went for a turn about halfway through the game when you get to see things from Abby’s eyes. Getting to see her story and WHY she sought out Joel in the first place. Seeing her relationships before things took a turn for the worse. All in all it ended fairly well, and still had me ready eyed when she picked up the guitar and thought of Joel one last time before leaving it behind. I will start my second play through tomorrow to get the rest of the trophies. 8/10 Expand

Absolutely love this game. I truly felt the pain and emotion of the characters, and it really challenged my morals like no other game has. I appreciated how risky the direction they took is and it absolutely worked for me, much better than if they just made a cookie-cutter, pandering game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is certainly a divisive game and I can certainly understand why many people, both returning fans and those new to the series alike, dislike it. That being said, I still strongly recommend the game as its fantastic gameplay and unique, if imperfect, storyline left me with an overall positive outlook towards the game as a whole. The gameplay is mix of stealth, third person shooter, and survival/crafting. This aspect is the best element of the game as it greatly improves upon the already solid mechanics of the previous Last of Us. The game is fairly linear and is structured around a set timeline of events that take the player to various large set piece locations in and around the pacific northwest region of the United States. The story of The Last of Us Part II is perhaps the most questionable element. While it is emotionally driven and follows a strong cast of characters, the plot pivots sharply at times and lingers on tangential storylines that could have been cut out entirely or at least significantly trimmed down. These sections of the game feel overly long and drawn out to the point that the story’s momentum is abruptly halted and some entire chapters of the game feel needlessly tacked on. While I can admire the writers’ attempts to flesh out some of the game’s side characters and create a sense of worldbuilding, these portions of the are too long and tedious to justify their inclusion in the finished version of the game. Despite this, I feel that the overall story and brilliant gameplay are strong enough to justify purchasing the game. For those are huge fans of the previous game, I recommend giving it a chance and heading in with an open mind, despite some of the more scathing reviews. Overall 8/10 Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
