As a last of us fan that waited 6 years, this was an utter disappointment and the worst game of 2020. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us part II was my biggest disappointment in 33 years of gaming.

A game that cancels all the good things and sense of hope created in the first, and throws you into a even more negative and inconclusive world.

Let's kill Joel after 2 hours and turn Ellie into a cold-hearted avenger; let her kill countless people, including pregnant women; let her lose her girlfriend, friends and even two fingers for nothing. Because hey, at th very end of the game why not to forgive Abby after all!
Yeah Abby, the most unappealing character ever created, the one responsible for Joel's death, and that the creators try to picture as "normal" or "right" in her point of view when you are forced to play with her for 50% of the game.
I cannot even imagine how to feel something positive about Abby, playing with her was an absolute torture!
And you know what? You wanted o create a game about Regvenge instead of Hope?
Ok, but at least give me the CHOICE of killing her at the end!

There's no freedom in this game, you're just forced to walk back and forth from point A to point B, where nothing, or nothing special happens.
Killing Nora? Owen an Mel? Who cares about them.
Flirting with owen at the Aquarium? Urgh.
Helping Yara and Lev for two extremely long chapters? A gimmick to have Abby look "positive".

The flashbacks? Yeah those were the only nice moments, when you see Ellie and Joel together in the museum, and think how beautiful this game would have been if only it was the natural continuation of their journey.

But no, let's place it in Seattle, a city overrun by nature (what an improvement, never seen that before!) with only gray and green colors, filled with the same generic thugs and factions (again, who cares about them?) and the same monsters from the first game.
Shamblers? They just look like Bloaters.
    Stalkers? Advanced-infection Runners.
Rat King? Bloater + Stalker fused together, how original!
The cult Colossi! Male and Female, both using the same weapon and moves! Great game design here.

The game is also very predictable.
Everytime you have to go from point A to B, you see your destination in the long distance, and nothing really happens in between.
They also abused stuck doors here. Let's push them and be prepared for an enemy ambush/QTE, or a noise that triggers the monsters.
Enemies are also stupid af, you can do 90% of the game in stealth mode without firing a single bullet, unless the game forces you to do so.

"Forces", yeah, the game forced me to play 28 hours to hope that something happened, but left me empty and disappointed.
Thank you ND you have destroyed two of the most beautiful characters ever created in the last 10 years, and everything they tried to create.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I made an account just to write a review for this game omfg. First I’ll say what I liked. Awesome graphic. Very beauty setting. Awesome horsey. Now the bad. I played this game hoping for Ellie and Joel’s relationship to grow and for them to finally discuss the firefly stuff and naughty dog ruined it. Like obviously the game is set in a terrible post apocalyptic world with zombie like enemies so **** will always go down. But no one asked for these random ass characters from Seattle to come in? Literally no one asked for Abby? We wanted a growth story with Joel and Ellie not some bull**** story about revenge that has been told 90 million times already??? The whole game is stressful and made me cry the whole time? Like I get that it’s supposed to be an emotional tough world but the happy moments in the previous game were what made it so good. The last of us part 2 just is one terrible thing after another with no choice but to sit through it with the only good parts being the flashbacks with Joel. Idk naughty dog really trashed this story and characters. It’s just really sad. Like I know it’s a game but I felt like we all looked up to Joel because we felt the hurt when he lost his own daughter. Just to **** kill him when he’s become like a dad to another? Terrible writing. Like my own dad died two years ago and seeing Joel die is like reliving that memory so thank you naughtydog for that. Joel and Ellie deserved a better story where the enemies were just zombies and actual bad guys. Stop trying to make stories about revenge and stop making zombie apocalypse stories without emphasis on the actual zombies? It’s like his game was trying to be the walking dead tv series and we all know that went to shut the second it became more about enemy humans rather than enemy zombies.. Anyway the gameplay is good but everything else sucked Expand

i will try and keep the spoilers to a minimum.

i played through last of us 1 and the DLC as a recap and was charged up for the second one.
so last of us part 2, to start with the graphics are amazing to look at on the ps4 pro at least, there are so many little things in the game that relate to the previous game so at the very beginning if you bother to take the time to look around you can see how much detail the devs put into it.

Story wise, a big event happened which took me by surprise and the devs have done so well at capturing the emotion that even i felt like going the direction that she did. i will say at the time of this writing i have not completed the game so i cannot comment on the end of the game just yet but so far i am 13 hours into it and have not found any plot holes or major story issues so that is as far as i can comment..

Game play wise, the AI are a lot smarter and i have never had an AI actually say sorry to me when they have got caught by the enemy so AI wise they flank you, move to find you, and change patrol paths which makes them more dangerous and unpredictable.
There are some open world aspects to the game and i will say the pace of the game is slightly slower than i would like but i would say its not a big issue.
The weapon customization is quite nice and it changes the look of the weapons slightly too which is rewarding.

if you like exploring and learning about the world your in and get really into the story and environment then this is the game for you. if you want to run and gun this and just pay the bare minimum attention to the story then do not waste your money.

The main cons i can see is
1: the stagger, if you get shot or hit by more than one person it can make you stagger constantly which makes it almost impossible to get out of and this results in your death
2: the dialogue is a bit few and far between during game play and fairly short dialogue at that which sucks but so far the cons are so much less than the pros.

IN SUMMERY, i paid for the deluxe edition of this game and i have got more than i expected out of this game and still enjoying it now and will be doing a second play through once i have completed it so my personal opinion is this game is worth it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay and the mechanics of The Last of us 2 are pretty much what you would've expected. Some new features make it more dynamic than the previous game and although not very innovative it still works pretty well. Players who liked the last game will surely enjoy this one too. But all the sneaking and fighting was never the point of this franchise. It was the story. And herein lies the big problem. Be warned, there are massive spoilers up ahead.

Joel's murder is staged in a way that we, the player, instantly share Ellie's longing for revenge. As we set out to confront his murderer, every action is driven by that desire and while being very brutal we have little compassion for the organization said murderer is part of. During her journey we begin to understand that Ellie will have to sacrifice her own well-being and emotional health in order to avenge Joel's death. The arch of tension is build up very nicely until the point of Ellie's confrontation with Abby. And then nothing. Just a gigantic cliffhanger. As we desperately want to see how the encounter ends we are thrown back three days just to play as Abby. And here is where, in my opinion, the game takes a very wrong turn.
We experience Abby's own sad background story, find out Joel killed her father and are tangled up in an unconvincing love triangle. Abby starts to question her believes and changes from cold blooded killer to a caring person. She shows compassion towards her enemies and saves two children. And yet we couldn't care less. This is because from the very first minute we slip into her role, we see through Naughty Dog's blatant attempt to make us relate to her and to see more in her than just Joel's killer. Even worse, we feel lectured. It is as if the developers are teachers who are resolving a conflict by forcing us to understand our opponent's motives.
Abby's crime is so heinous and leave us so shocked that we just don't care. As her story unravels piece by piece we get more and more frustrated as we can't build a connection with her but still have to play just to advance the plot. We understand and comprehend why she did what she did, we may even come to the conclusion that we would've done the same. But we still care to much about Ellie's loss. A few hours of gameplay as her main antagonist is not enough to forget that, let alone sympathize with Abby.
Unfortunately this is so annoying, obvious and unconvincing that the experience is ruined beyond repair.
Everyone old enough to play this game knows there are always two sides to the same coin. The message of the game is clear. The way it is presented, however, does not work and leads to a very frustrating and disappointing experience.

The graphics are absolutely gorgeous, gameplay extremely fun and probably the best part of this game. The game play builds upon the predecessor and adds more fun elements and enemies like stalkers/rat-king etc, all enhancing the quality of the game. As far as the story goes, i can understand why some people are angry but this game was always going to have a sad ending. I think the cut-scenes explain brilliantly the choices Ellie and Abby make with the links to their pasts and overall the game does an excellent job in portraying the consequences of revenge and how to move forward from it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright so this game I expected for years has been a huge disappointment. Let's be crystal clear, I do not care about Ellie's sexual preferences or whatsoever. What matters to me are 2 things: gameplay and story. Graphics are incredible, it's beautiful, there is absolutely nothing to say about Art Direction: it's epic, flawless. This game is one of the most beautiful there is. My PS4 Pro was coughing like never before but hey, for a game this beautiful, it's a fair price.

Gameplay was very nice; I loved the first TLOU's gameplay also, I liked the stealth, fighting, puzzles, etc. It was great and different from what I've seen before. TLOU2 brings more mechanics to the gameplay: abilities to crawl in the grass, to break windows, etc. There are new monsters, terrifying for some (I think its name is the Rat King), dogs that can smell you and find you, and unlimited knife for Ellie. Again, the gameplay is nice, you can infiltrate and be sneaky as you wish. It's fun and playing as Ellie was a pleasure, even if there are still these problems : this door is locked, must get around, there are traps/monsters/ enemies around. The game is way too long about that, it's kinda repetitive and boring in the end. It's a revenge story that you finish after 30 hours. It's too long ! Also, the NPC that accompany you can teleport anywhere and it's not very realistic. It's idiotic. There are a few bugs but it's the first week. I finished the game but won't see the correctives, as I will not play it again.

About the story. This is the cancer part. What the hell is wrong ? I admit that killing Joel was extremly shocking and risky, and it was necessary to develop a revenge story. Joel is killed by relatives of the Fireflies he executed when he needed to save Ellie, back in St Mary's Hospital in Salt Lake City. So, Ellie hunts the group and manage to kill them, one by one, until the big cheese; ABBY. Abby is the one that terminated Joel. Therefore, she's the biggest villain. The evil one. After Ellie managed to kill most of the group, except Abby, she's convinced by Tommy and Jesse to stop and go back home. But that's when Abby attacks Ellies group, shoots Tommy and threatens Ellie !

And what does Naughty dog do at this exact moment ? They force players to play Abby, so we can see what she was doing after killing Joel ! What the h*ll ? What's wrong with you ? Where on Earth do you think the life and feelings of a murderer would interest me ? And play with this character for a good 6 hours !? Seriously ? What's going on ? Nothing Abby could do will repair what she's done ! Spare us those useless 6 hours and let's go to the final fight ! Let's talk about this "final fight" (which wasn't, because this game is absurdly looong); we still play as Abby ! So the player must attack the character they learned to love and protect for 7 years in TLOU ! That cretinism here is absolutely devastating. At this fight, I let Abby die countless times, because for me the game was over and Ellie got her revenge ! Fin ! But no, that's not what ND had planned. Instead, Abby kicks Ellie's ass and leaves. Seriously ?

And after what was thought to be the epilogue with Ellie, we play as Abby once more, and she's captured... Really ? And what does good Ellie do ? She leaves her gf to... help Abby. Seriously. There is a mental sickness behind this story. So, after she freed Abby, I thought it was done but there was a light of hope : Ellie starts a fight with Abby. Yes ! I thought. That's it, at last. Finally this game will be good. Mistake of mine ! Because Ellie forgives Abby "because she forgave Joel". What. The. F*ck. Absolute nonsense.

Imagine watching Kill Bill without Bill getting killed. Nonsense. That's TLOU2. And it saddens me more than I ever could imagine. I'll sell that game asap.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gioco colossale.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Abby tortures Joel before she kills him. Her crew probably tortured him to the point where he cries( based on what Owen says before he and Abby have sex). If you have played the first game this is simply not forgivable it does not matter how good she Abby might be she tortured a guy who is like a father to Ellie. While the game does a good job at bringing out her story it's difficult to enjoy it if every fiber of your being wants to stab her.

The gameplay is actually enjoyable however once you start playing as Abby you just want it to stop. The same goes for what can only be described as the best atmospheres I have seen. I guess the only saving grace for the fans of the original game is that Abby has no friends or loved ones left. To those who think that it's amazing how you overcome revenge in the end please try to understand that it's not how one would feel when it comes to having your loved one murdered. Also if you think Joel deserved to die because he killed the fireflies and prevented the cure again try to imagine having to let go of your loved one for some **** cure.

The masterpiece that was the first one was almost violated. They way they force them out of the story was very disappointing and the character you end up playing was impossible to relate with or feel for.

Would give 8.5 if I could. Only real issue for me was the length and pacing - I clocked just under 25hrs, and felt that it dragged a bit in places, and has several false starts as far as the final 5 or so hours are concerned. I personally liked the direction the story went, but they perhaps tried to squeeze a bit too much story in, which doesn’t lend itself well to the pacing issues. OtherWould give 8.5 if I could. I personally liked the direction the story went, but they perhaps tried to squeeze a bit too much story in, which doesn’t lend itself well to the pacing issues. Other than that, it plays wonderfully; the combat has been massively streamlined since the first game, where I often felt the combat was a bit of a chore. Obviously the game looks great, and the acting is top notch. While the first game focused on the relationships between a small handful of characters, Part 2 explores the wider world of The Last of Us, giving the player an interesting insight into how the rest of the country is coping (or not...). This is occasionally a detriment to character development, as we are introduced to so many new faces, but nonetheless I found the overarching story to be an enthralling rollercoaster of a journey. While it can’t quite match the simplicity and intimacy of the first game, it succeeds in telling a challenging story, and opens up a world of possibilities as far as any potential sequel is concerned. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved it.
It looks amazing, it feels amazing and the story is very good. I loved Joel but let me say this, he was a selfish and heavily flawed person. Did he deserve to die? Absolutely. Did I want him to die? No, but I understand that his actions and decisions lead him to this point and got himself killed. To me it didn't seem a cheap plot device. What's that? He would never do that and introduce himself to strangers? How tf do you know that? In a post apocalyptic world, where you've been chased by infected, you stumbled upon a living being who helped you and your brother escape, gave you shelter, and they clearly outnumber you so being hostile is not an option, you wouldn't want to be decent and help out? You guys are idiots. Joel started in the first game as cold and distant with Ellie being an optimistic, happy and warm person. By the end of the game, and beginning of the 2nd one they have changed. Ellie turned cold because of the things they went through and because she lost her meaning of life, and Joel grew to Ellie who he'd see as a daughter and would do anything to make happy. This is character development. They are changed by their actions. The Ellie and Abby part - you know what? Overall Abby is a better person that Ellie.

Abby killed Joel because he killed her father. What did Ellie do? Kill all her friends on her quest to avenge Joel whilst putting all her own friends in danger and abandoning them. She had a peaceful life with Dina by the end, but she blew it because she wanted to go back to find and kill Abby, and so she rightfully was abandoned by Dina. But Ellie also changed as a person as did Abby.
And that is what I loved. Ellie realised that the whole revenge theme would just endlessly go around in circles unless someone put an end to it and she did. She stopped the cycle of killings. You will say that this decision wasn't in her character and I will argue that it was. After she killed Mel and Owen something flipped in her mind. Ever since that incident she seemed unsure. She didn't pursue Abby when they finally found eachother. She started a new life with Dina but needed a push from Tommy to make her change her mind and find Abby again. Then when she finds her, she doesn't just kill her while she is strapped to that pole but instead cuts her loose only to be pushed again by flashbacks to challenge Abby once more until she realizes that this would only lead to more revenge. That is character development. She struggles and changes as a person. Do I feel bad for her at the end for losing everything? Yes. But she deserved it. What about Abby? I liked the idea of playing from her perspective even if we hated her for killing Joel. She had a good reason and I already explained that Joel wasn't a saint and he clearly had it coming. We see her develop just as Joel did in the first game. She goes from a vengeful and cold person with the reputation of one of the most fierce Scars killers, to a protective sibling figure to two fugitive children. She goes out of her way to help them knowing that she might get in trouble with her group and Issac.
In Santa Barbara we see a changed optimistic, and by the end fed up with all the violence Abby. Even when she can barely stand up on her feet she still cares for and protects Lev. If this isn't character development then I don't know what is..

This was their story not ours. We were merely spectators of their journeys that's why we didn't get to decide whether Abby dies or not. And I am grateful for that. I am subtracting one point for the discontinued feeling it gave me when we shift to the scenes from the farm after they parted ways with Abby and because the looting and stealth kills were a bit repetitive. Other than that it's a 9 from me.

You gotta see the characters as they are. I get it that you loved the Joel and Ellie dynamic but just because your favourite character dies it doesn't mean that you have to run around stomping and crying like little b*itches because you didn't get the candy you wanted. Life sucks, and it doesn't always go our way. In life we get what we deserve and if a game wants to portray realistic scenarios then they have to do exactly that. Disappointment, loss, betrayal, sadness these are all bound to happen in a post apocalyptic world. Just because you don't like the decisions Druckmann took doesn't mean they're bad. Try to be objective instead of being as**ole crybabies.

This game, in summary is like: "Remember that beloved character you sympathised in the whole story of The Last of Us? Good because now we are going to show you that he/she deserves this death. Yeah this one. Pretty quick and disrespectful right? Look at how edgy we are, how innovators, how... different (rubbing their nipples). Why killing it like that? Because that person killed a lot of human beings, people with their own story. And now we offer you a more realistic way to see TLOU by controling, the one and only, character who killed the most important character of the first game". So what's the whole point of The Last Of Us 1? Anyway, you can't even call this game a part two, because it isn't. It doesn't add up. We don't really know what were you thinking.
Thanks for the first game, but this one needed more heart, humanity and passion to be a decent sequel. I can even say that this sequel was totally unnecessary.

And it kind of sucks to be honest.

Why did they retconned the ending of Part1? Why did they completely swapped out the two most important characters to replace them with morons? I don't get it. It looks and sounds awesome for sure, yet I can't appreciate the final product at all. Why? Because TLoU was never about looks, sound or even gameplay. Admit it, the gameplay always was mediocre at best. It was the narrative that made it a masterpiece. There was this overreaching major storyarc of saving humanity and there was the evolving relationship between a girl that never learned what true love is and a father who thought that true love died with his daughter years ago...and yet both found what they never expected: True love for each other. And at the end this true love was more important to Joel than humanity itself.

And TLoU2 **** on all of it! It's just a mere revenge story with no giant storyarc that pushes everything forward. Just bitterness back and forth with stupid character writing that really boggled my mind while playing it. Thanks Naughty Dog for destroying a franchise. I'm really glad the first one will always be a perfect interactive movie that didn't need a sequel anyway. It got a sequel...but I'll erase it out of my memory for sure.

My score is for the technical standards alone. The Story/Writing gets a bold 1/10 from me.

I wen into the game with no spoilers, so I intend to spoil nothing in this review.
To tackle many people's biggest complaint: the story.
this is the one aspect that falls slightly short of TLOU, however the story is quite the opposite of the last of us, whilst the first game is about saving another this is about ending one. If you expected the stories to be the same then you should change that perspective right now. Through out the game you get to play as two characters; Ellie and Abby. Whilst Ellie's story is dim and full of hatred, driven by rage into making suicidal decisions, Abby's is fueled by love and mainly regret. This game brings a closer look at an already devastated world, it's about death and sorrow, the people within a torned world and how they live through it. Compared to the first game where you discover a torn world and how to live in it. So obviously this game is far different story wise. And personally I loved the story.
Gameplay is far more versatile in Part II, this ability to do so much more allows for a lot more fun. Whilst the combat is repetitive just like in the first game, the introduction of new tools be it a new ammo type, craft-able or weapon, increases your creative ways to murder. Overall I found the gameplay in this game a lot more fun than the first, especially a specific encounter which is possibly one of my favourite gaming moments.
The atmosphere of this game is impressive, the first one was so disturbed yet beautiful, and this game does a great job of reinstating that and improving it. To be honest, I thought I wouldn't be scared by this game (seeing as I'm already accustomed to the world) but there are so many tense moments that leave you fearing for your life. This game is a cinematic masterpiece, from beautiful sunsets to dark interior building to raging fires, if there is anything truly incredible about this game it is the visuals.
The music in this game is just as empty as the first, giving it the exact same feel. One lonely instrument. Seeing as guitar plays such a heavy role in this game every piece played on guitar is symbolic of (spoilers). Music always kicks in at the right time, to set a scene, to increase tension, it's so absorbing you don't even realise the music is even there, and thats why I think the sound design is amazing.

Also a shout out to the actors, loved the performance. This game was one hell of an emotional roller coaster. It's not a feel good game, and I think that's why it's getting so much negative reviews. But to me personally it's the gritty side of this game what makes it a piece of art, and not just a game. A few points of criticism. If you look around a bit too long, the characters will help you in the right direction too quickly. I prefer to sort things out myself. You can turn off the hints, but even then you're taken by the hand too much. The companion is also getting in your way too much. If you're in cover for example, they often take the same place, pushing you out of cover.
I don't give it a 10, because no game is perfect. Although I should do it to respond to all negative reviews. But I give it a fair 9, which it really deserves in my opinion.
My advice, stop reading reviews and play the game yourself. I am convinced whether you like the story or not, the game world, with all its details, alone is more than worth it.

Without spoilering anything, I honestly felt like being hostage at a game I bought, just to get to the ending of the story. I was shoved through countless scenarios, with the game constantly "trying to sell" me something I didn't want, and yeah in the end I even did "buy it", but man did I hate the product I bought. (I just felt emotionally manipulated and hated that)

Also, there were so many unlikeable characters and this game was trying so hard to make me see them somewhat favourable, just to then destroy that again and after playing through all that and thinking you finally get a somewhat decent ending that would have made this worth it, the game destroys even the last character you liked and drags the ending on to an extent that was not fun any more.

it was so bad i stopped playing approximately 2-3h before the end. Seeing the end in playthroughs though, was proof enough for me that it wasn't even worth it. Seriously never have I seen such a badly written plot.

Don't get me wrong, the initial idea is amazing and the means for that are as heartbreaking as they are amazing, but man the execution of the idea and the written character are at times seriously bullsh**. It was just bad and I wish I never played it to begin with.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This isnt easy but I feel like i need to post this to get some closure. I cant believe how disconnected the director for the game is from the fans. Did he think that his first game was a brilliant masterpiece because of his amazing innovate ideas that he could only build on in the sequel? The truth is the man just got plain lucky. Joel and Ellie were perfectly designed, cast, voiced, and just overall amazing. Somehow this game director (Druckmann) completely forgot that Joel and Ellie are the franchise. Instead of further building on perhaps the greatest duo since Jordan and Pippen, he decided to go the opposite route and try to punish you for loving the first game. Now don't get me wrong, i fully expected that eventually Joel would die because this really feels like Ellie's story, that being said he went about it in a terrible way and does the character no justice. Furthermore, he robs the audience of the Joel and Ellie dynamic which made the first game one of the greatest stories ever told. Haters and lovers of the game both agree on the same thing, the best scene in the game is the Joel and Ellie flashback at the museum. That's what we wanted and that's what we waited 7 years for. To go back into that world and somehow feel what we felt all those years ago with the first one. Instead of building on that they introduce a character that people despise and force you to play as her for half the game AND at a cliffhanger point in the story. Druckmann severely underestimated the love fans had for Joel and i believe it ended up biting him in the ass with all the controversy surrounding this game. Now i can get into the various plot holes and poor sequencing of the game but i feel as though everybody here is well aware of them already. I will cut to the ending which is so depressing. People don't play video games because they crave reality. I fire up my playstation to escape reality and not have to deal with whatever depressing subject is going on in today's world and this ending makes me want to run into the depression outside. I get what they went for at the end but they pretty much decided to kill off both characters we loved so much in the end (one physically and one mentally). To have it end on such a note and with any possible sequel coming in 7 years is a hard pill to swallow. Everything aside from the story was as good as it gets, especially the music. However The Last of Us is a Joel and Ellie game and what Druckmann ended up doing to them is what a majority of the fan base is doing to this game right now. The only redemption that's left is to do a part 3 and give the characters the proper story and send-off they deserve. Do your characters right because they put this franchise on the map. Also my final thought; if people think I'm biased because of the LGBT in the game well you can **** right off. Ellie being gay didn't feel forced or thrown in to please a crowd. Ever since we were introduced to her she was fierce and we all loved her for it. Giving her a love triangle and writing her as gay didn't feel forced or unnecessary. We love Ellie and we are all happy she found love in her life. Please Naughty Dog, go back to the drawing board and really look back at the first game and do right by the fans. Expand

I’ll keep it short - unlike plenty of people giving poor score to the game, I actually bothered playing it and I absolutely love it! Game design, storyline, characters - everything is so beautifully done, definitely the best Naughty Dog and PS4 title, a contender for GOTY award and a game of generation.

Being kind, I will give this game a 2 put of 10 as it does look amazing. Sadly, that is the only amazing thing about this game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s hard to see from my perspective how anyone is complaining about the story. This is one the most complete and lore filled story driven games I have seen. By the end of the game, the narrative makes you feel connected to every character. I found myself realizing that this isn’t a game about good guys versus bad guys. It’s just a story of people making hard decisions and having to navigate the consequences of their actions. This however makes the ending hard to navigate, I’ve read many reviews about how the ending sucked and was disappointing. The way the narrative unfolds, constantly blurring the lines between who is in the right or wrong, makes it impossible to write an ending that makes everyone happy. Overall it is emotionally complex and compelling, regardless of what you think about how it ends. Expand

It’s been said it wasn’t made to be “fun” so, without “fun” as an intention millions of dollars have been spent to simply make an unoriginal statement. The world is amazingly built, the graphics, animations, sound and atmosphere had me surprised the PS4 could even run it so all credit to the artists and programmers involved. However, there’s been several years of time for story development just to support an unwarranted personal strike from the director at the fan base...and watching the retreat into the sycophantic bubbles of denial and even arrogance on social media has been like watching a sad performance of self-flagellation...taking a piece of art and using destruction like some kind of twisted example you have a bigger heart for the story. Ironically, if we are to be lectured of the subjectivity of violence, hatred or love, and our actions as individuals being the real problem in the world (post-apocalyptic or not) then we’ve learned it not from the game but from it’s creation and aftermath. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thoroughly enjoyed this game, the visuals are stunning, the controls are VERY clean, the game-play loop is fun though can be a little repetitive due to the nature of the game (it's a stealth game, of courses there's going to be a TONNE of stealth). The story while I didn't ENJOY in the same way I would the story of a fun action movie, was irrefutably good. I've seen a few other people's reviews on it and their complaints mainly focus on the fact that they didn't want to play as Abby, especially when fighting Eliie, and they claim that character motivations and actions conflict. To the first point, i say, you're not meant to, Abby was a character introduced to us KILLING JOEL, we are meant to hate her, making us play as her is there to deepen the fact that she isn't JUST the evil we see when she kills Joel, not (like i've seen most assume) to make us like her.

To the second point I can partly understand where they're coming from, but I didn't encounter that conflict when I was playing, it was only when watching other's reviews that I thought 'oh i guess it could be seen that way'.

A good illustration for what the story did, was in the last scene with both Abby and Ellie, i didn't want to kill Abby. Not out of empathy or because i liked her, but because of the frankly pathetic state she was in, 'life' had punished her enough at that point, and pushing it further would have felt gratuitous. This arguably could be attributed to the frankly incredible character design going from one of the buffest people in-game to, well, the state she was in at the end but even so it was still effective.

All in all part of me feels like the immense hate for this game, from the people who have played it, stems from wanting to hate it and seeing small things and taking stances that make them feel much worse. I wouldn't say this is better than the original, or even close, but I would say it's a hell of a lot better than a lot of other games out there and was well worth the cost.

The studio made a game meant to have a deep of impact on the gamer, with every single battle, with every plot point, through all the anguish filled moments you live and survive to, a message about how pointless revenge is, how grey humans are as living beings, how there are no heroes and how important it is to forgive and give your life a better meaning... it all strikes the sweet spots. Very few times a game lets you reflect on yourself, your life, your traumas and all the anger and remorse you might feel about your own mistakes. At the end, it serves to me as some kind of thought and deep therapy to come to an end with my own demons and ghosts. Bravo! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a potentially wonderful game ruined by the incompetence of its director. The last of us 2 *somehow* manages to be less than the sum of its parts. Gameplay is greatly improved, the graphics are incredible, level design is stellar. Yet I had to stop playing it at the ground zero level because I reached that point where I started asking myself why am I still doing this which is the point where I trained myself to stop playing a game. It is two maybe even three games lazily slapped together for no apparent reason with very little thread connecting them. The characters are impossible to care about. And whatever good will we have remaining from the previous game Naughty Dog (or rather I assume Neil Druckmann) has no qualms throwing out the window.

Ellie is now about as sympathetic as a rabid badger. The chemistry between her and her supposed love interest is non-existent. The only characters that I liked were Lev and his sister. But as I said it is three games seemingly written by three different people or groups of people. If only there was someone that would be responsible for keeping a sense of direction in this game. I don't know, like a "director" if you will. I sometimes wonder if Neil participated in those crunch sessions because the direction in this game seems like it was done by someone who **** off at 16:00 every day.

Another huge problem is that the game is 30 hours long. That might be fine if you are a child. If you are an adult with responsibilities a game has to justify every single of those hours and the last of 2 can make an honest claim for doing that for about 15 of them. The rest is pointless padding that annoyed me the more I played of it. You play as Abby during this part. Which I guess they thought would be kinda cool and that is literally how much thought they put into it. Because it isn't cool. It is pointless and stupid. The motivations of the characters are laughable. Here is what would have happened in reality - Abby comes and kills Joel. The rest of the town including Ellie go **** this sucks" and go on with their lives. Joels death *really* didn't feel like a driving force behind the game. And in about 10 hours it was entirely forgotten with the characters just going through the motions.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had to submit my review as the user score is completely unjust. Majority of the negativity stems from the rather brutal killing of Joel, first part of the game. It was a shock to see, but it had such an emotional impact I was totally engrossed in its story and how Ellie would avenge his death. After the events of the first game and the decision that Joel made that subsequently doomed mankind of all hope, did people really think he'd be able to continue without any enemies, completely unscathed? It's impossible. As much as I love Joel as a character, the way the story plays out makes sense and has such weight to it, I never felt hard done by in anyway. Abby, the character who killed Joel is actually a great character and her reasons are justified. Ellie is no saint, even more so further into the game.

Overall I think they knocked it out of the park with this. It's just a shame a lot of people that have reviewed negatively aren't mature enough to understand the games direction.
