Almost like last Jedi but the difference is this clearly had a lot more work am behind in my opinion and that shows in every frame. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

TLOU2 is a great game, is it a perfect game, no but still great. The biggest problem is that it feels like this game should have been TLOU3 this would have been an golden opportunity to make the events that take place in this game so much more impactful.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The ending still makes me feel empty, but not in a way of disappointment, but of sorrow. A good movie, story, or game, makes you ponder on your own thoughts well after the credits roll. This game did that. Bravo. Initially, I hated the ending because she let Abby live. Once I had time to let it marinate, I changed my views. I feel now that Ellie saw a glimpse of Joel in Abby in that last moment, and therefore saw her own young self in Lev. She realized that killing Abby would have left Lev to be alone like her, and that’s why she let Abby go. It was her way of forgiving Abby AND Joel at the same time. That explanation makes me feel much better about the ending and appreciation for the game/story as a whole. That resident evil boss battle felt weirdly out of place though lol Expand

ND tells the story they want to tell and every piece is so deliberately thought over. The contrast of characters and how the narrative jumps from past to present gives more weight to the actions you the player are experiencing and witnessing.

Gameplay is a huge improvement from the first with players being able to craft ammo, use ropes and vertical environmental changes to navigate. Combat feels tighter than the first, AI is smarter and can be customized in the accessibility options. Infected are scarier and pose more of a threat. The world of The Last of Us is as hauntingly beautiful as ever with more open world feeling areas.

The voice acting is on point. I felt for characters I didn't want to feel for. And the facial capture brings new life.

I dare say this has become my favorite game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II deals in some aspects that I've never seen in a game before. It respects the true narrative of Ellie's story, as she's not the sweet girl from before the final act of the first game. A lot has gone through her mind in those years after the hospital massacre.. she feels guilty about those lives taken by Joel, but she also wants to forgive him, and that's brilliantly shown in the flashbacks. Of course, the narrative could've been different, and that's my issue, but that's art. The concept of art is not giving us what we want, but to give us something from the point of view of the artist. I've become very found of Abby, as I learned her story. She's a victim of Joel's rampage to save Ellie and that's one of the reasons I think she spared Abby in the end. Joel loved Ellie, but he was traumatized by what happened to Sarah and his wife, in that he couldn't bare to lose the last person he really cared about (of course there's Tommy, but you know what I mean). The things he did culminated on his death, and the narrative does not have flaws right here.
The gameplay and graphics are incredible. I grew tired of the same stealth kill animations after sometime, and that's my main issue. It's a stealth game, they should've invested more on this.
The story is not for everyone. If you're someone who sees same sex relationships with prejudice and disrespect, you should not play this game.. actually you should stick to games with muscular men and things like that (every homophobic has a fragile masculinity). Other than that, the story is painful. Heavy. And you need to pay attention to everything so you don't become an internet troll, throwing in the trash the effort of the people involved in this amazing project.
A great game. Surely GOTY 2020!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s been a very long time since a game has made me contemplate the choices of the protagonists to this level. The writing is very good and the combat is reminiscent of the first game but undoubtedly improved. This story took an immense toll on me emotionally for a couple days, i couldn’t get specific moments, scenes and decisions out of my head. I beat it relatively quickly and had to take a break from heavier dark material for a few days. There are warm moments of friendship and love, as well as devistating and disturbing moments of gut wrenching violence and loss. Jury’s still out as to whether or not i like Abby personally, i do very much see what ND was going for and respect it, even if i would have rather had a full Ellie Adventure. I would give the game a 8.5 but i can only do 8 or 9, so i’m rounding up because the GRAPHICS are pretty phenomenal, even on my base PS4. PS4 Pro is even better. I’ll end by letting you know that all the bad hype this game is getting, is undeserved. People want something to hate rn so it’s getting review bombed. I usually don’t agree with the critics but i sorta do this time. I do thing the first game is superior, because it was a tighter, more concisely weaved structure and story, but this game (if you can handle the gore) is absolutely worth playing. 9/10. Expand

Punishing in many ways, no doubt. But it was absolutely thrilling. I finished it last night and it well deserves the praise it gets from critics. Literary essays could be written about this story and its characters. The way the game forced me to switch perspectives and view certain characters and moral viewpoints directly through the gameplay was unlike any game I've played. Many people hate this aspect. They hate that they're made to sympathize with the enemy. I get that feeling. It's uncomfortable, and a desire rises up to reject the game on those grounds. But if you can get passed that knee-jerk reaction, you will come to realize that the story is better for the controversial choices made.

Another complaint I've heard is that this is just a cliche story about revenge. But that's missing the nuance. This story is about perspective. It is about perspective within the context of revenge, and by focusing on perspective an entirely different story and gameplay experience is created, one in which the player, if taking an evenhanded view, is not entirely sure for whom they are rooting. Nobody in this story has the moral high ground. They're all damaged, and the damage done to them perpetuates a cycle. These characters are complex, both the protagonists and antagonists, and this game wants to us to experience their complexities in deep, unsettling ways—ways in which we as players might learn lessons to apply to the real world. But you have to see through your own expectations of the game to truly appreciate what the developers have done here.

I've read and seen video reviews from irate fans, and while I understand their perspective I couldn't disagree more with much of their gripes. This may not be the story that some wanted, but it is not a bad story by any stretch of the imagination. It is a natural evolution from the first game's story and themes, and it directly deals with the repercussions of the characters' actions. It makes perfect sense. Some fans argue that the characters do no act like they would in the first game and that this leads unjustifiably to the inciting incident that kicks things off. Thus the inciting incident doesn't ring true. I feel these fans are, again, missing the nuance, the nuance of the situation the characters find themselves in. These fans can't accept that our supposed heroes are capable of being forced into an untenable situation that could end badly. The world built in these games is not a world built for happy endings. Our heroes may not be the heroes we think they are from a certain perspective.

Then there's the LGBTQ representation. Yes, we have a lesbian couple. They kiss and cuddle. Is it over the top? pandering? Absolutely not. There is no agenda. The story just happens to have two women who fall for each other like any man and woman might. You know, like in real life. Their relationship is central to the story, but not on the basis of it being a lesbian relationship. Maybe two moments occur in the entire game that addresses bigotry. They're small aspects, and they're realistic and fleeting. The story moves on. But you know what? I shouldn't have to make excuses like saying that these moments are fleeting and thus not a big deal. Bigotry happens in real life. People experience it. Showing it in a game or depicting people who experience it shouldn't be an issue. Ever. I repeat, it's not an agenda. It's real life. There could be an argument that Naughty Dog played up the lesbian relationship in marketing. But that's not the game. Move on.

As for the gameplay, it's very recognizable to the first game. It's better in many ways with more variety, and it's very fluid. If you loved the first game's gameplay and didn't get tired of it then you'll love the gameplay here, even more so. As a player you are gently eased into learning skills as the game progresses. As things ramp up you never feel left behind, but gameplay remains intense. Intense is the best way to describe the combat. The music feeds into this feeling. It's very satisfying, but disturbing.

This game is much longer than the first. My campaign was around 40 hours. I explored as many nooks and crannies as possible (but still didn't find everything) and really took in the beautiful scenery. The graphics are jaw-dropping. I will admit that at some points there was some repetitiveness. Scavenging can get a little old, especially toward the end. But the detailed environments always make exploration fun. The combat and stealth components and level designs allow for a variety of ways to approach every situation. I played it on the default difficulty and died a few times here and there. I imagine on harder difficulty levels that precise strategy becomes very important and will add to the game's replay value.

I couldn't recommend this game more highly.

The artists at ND are really at the top of their craft here. In my opinion you should it on the hardest difficulty you can bear to really emphasize the desperation inherent in the game's world. You can always lower the difficulty in game if it's too much. I'm very glad I chose Survivor for my first playthrough, it wasn't nearly as punishing as the first game on Grounded difficulty, but it was still a proper challenge.

No part of my 30 hours with the game felt unnecessary, it all felt in service of the story Naughty Dog wanted to tell and I think they pretty much stuck the landing. It's not perfect, but I think it can stand as a worthy sequel to the masterpiece that was Part 1. Overall, I think this game will polarize fans, but you can count me squarely in the "loved it" group.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A divisive game for sure, but one that possibly deserves every bit emotion it generates. This is a story of vengeance and loss that affects not only the characters but the player themselves.

From the beginning we are presented with the hardest truth a fan of the first game must realize: Joel has been tortured and killed, viciously and unapologetically, in front of Ellie. The trauma from this event scars her, but it also scars us. We feel the anger and hatred because Joel was important to us. The first game cemented our connection, ND being amazing at what they do, and they use that to elicit the kind of emotions they want from you. In this case legitimately feeling revenge and hate was the point. To make you ACTUALLY feel. This game was designed to be terrible and sad and feeling these things proves that the developers succeeded in their goals.

Gameplay and mechanics are essentially a given at this point, again masters of their craft, so the story is the only thing left to even consider. The grief and hurt from these events are channeled into the game, pushing you to find Abby and make her pay for what she's done. Make some sense of the callous and quick nature of the murder of a beloved father figure. We want to make the pain go away. We need to deal with the grief.

But that grief is never resolved. Revenge never truly sated. The reality of the futility of the pursuit of vengeance crystallized in a way I've never seen before. It is an experience you don't often get to have and it's told in a way that respects and reinforces the connections made in the first game.

Play this yourself. Get angry. FEEL. And take in the beautiful tragedy. One of the most thought-provoking and visceral games I have EVER played. Thank you Naughty Dog, you bastards.

I’ve read a few reviews and it appears some believe Naughty Dog is “pandering.” And I imagine by pandering folks mean that recognizing a lesbian could be a main protagonist of a story. Are folks aware that about 99.9% of characters in games are straight and or assumed to be heterosexual? Are production studios pandering to the heterosexual agenda? Further, typically when one is homophobic, it means you’re struggling with some sort of internalized self hate, if you know what I mean. I wanted to call out the obvious contempt for the LGBTQ+ community in the video game community. As for the game, it was amazing. Was it perfect, no. Nothing is perfect. The graphics were stellar. The story was both intense and touching. Ellie’s flashbacks of Joel were touching, especially when he took her to the museum in Wyoming for her birthday. The gameplay was great, it was easy to maneuver throughout the environments. The relationships between characters were well hashed out. I cared about these characters and what happened to them. I felt for Ellie as she struggled to adjust in a world of pain and misery at such a young age. I really enjoyed the game and think most will too. Enjoy the game and learn a thing or two. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, if you are bombing this game’s score just because there’s a lesbian couple, and a trans character at the center of this story, please go somewhere else, it’s 2020 that’s really all I have to say and people with common sense and empathy shouldn’t see an issue with that. Secondly, I can understand why some people have an issue with the way they decided to handle the narrative for this game. I would say (getting negatives out of the way first) my biggest issue with TLOU2 is the pacing and the structure of the story, not really with the story itself. I feel like the pacing would have been better if they somehow found a way to intertwine the 2 huge chunks of the games playtime when you play as Ellie up until Abby finds her and co. at the theatre, and then we jump back and play from Day 1 in Seattle to that moment as Abby. It just felt like all momentum the story had getting to that moment came to a screeching halt and really threw me for a loop for a bit, although after a while I settled in and did become more invested in Abby’s story when I had a chance to see where they were taking this story. Now all of the positives: An absolutely gorgeous game from beginning to end, truly astonishing attention to detail as the environments are so well designed and look so jaw dropping consistently. Sound design is also incredibly impressive it has so much depth, I include the music/score with that. The gameplay is extremely engaging, whether choosing to be stealthy or go in guns blazing. Also, all of the voice acting was absolutely award worthy, especially Ashley Johnson, good lord...she absolutely hit it out of the park, especially since Ellie in this game, is much more complicated of a character to play in my opinion then Ellie from the first game. All in all I say bravo to everyone who had a hand in making this game. From developers to writers, to voice actors and level designers, I believe this game as a whole is an extremely divisive masterpiece. And maybe (much like Metal Gear Solid 2) in time the majority of people who disliked, or even hated, and review bombed this game, will come to realize how rich of an experience it really is, and appreciate it for that. Thanks for reading my first review on MetaCritic! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Buzzwords and phrases used by critics to describe this game calling it a once in a generation game and a console defining game made me nervous that hype had affected critical evaluation of the game. The negative user reviews concerned me greatly so I actually went into the game worried that it would let me down. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This game makes incredibly bold risks and changes our attitudes towards beloved characters from the first game. Never have I seen a game manage to create such multi dimensional characters whilst also drawing out some of the best motion capture and voice acting of any game i have played. Many user complaints i have seen emphasised Joe;'s death, Ellies behaviour throughout the game and the section played as Abbie. Firstly Joel's death hurt but it sets up the narrative arch and philosophical themes throughout the game. The game deals heavily with the emotional burden hatred and lust for revenge bares on a person so by killing off the most beloved character you ignite the hatred for Abbie within the player almost immediately. The only annoyance i can empathise with is people complaining that the marketing lead people to believe Joel had more of a presence in the game. But then again whilst he does not go on this games journey with you his presence is so important through flashbacks that contextualise and develop these characters past the first game. These flashbacks were some of the most emotively potent sections of the game for me and i truly loved playing them.
Secondly, like many others I was incredibly annoyed to play as Abbie when the game resets to Seattle day 1. However as I played her section I couldn't help but empathise with her as she slowly rekindled the humanity she lost after the killing of Joel. Lev, Yara and Abbie quickly became my favourite charters in the game. I cannot stress enough how much i came to love the Characters in Abbies story specifically the sequence in the Seraphites home island. Not only was this my favourite part of the game to play with the chaos and burning huts looking like something out of a medieval epic. But also this feud between the Seraphites and the WLF that has been bubbling in the background of the narrative referenced through NPC conversations, notes and some cutscenes, comes to a head. This happens just when the pacing seemed to lag and was a primal depiction of the brutality humans are capable of inflicting.
Ellie's behaviour as a complaint i simply cannot understand. How many characters have we seen be driven to do horrible things as a result of happenings during the apocalypse. Why should Ellie be any different. The all consuming hatred is captured perfectly in pivotal scenes with excellent motion capture and voice acting and Ellie's pursuit of revenge is one of my favourites in video game history. Did it lower my estimations of her, yes. Was it unrealistic, no. Ellie is complex as humans are and the murder of the only consistent figure in her life drives her to near insanity. By the end of the story my perspective shifted and i wanted nothing more than for Abbie to get away with Lev. Why does there have to be a black and white separation of morality in video games? Can't morality be examined as a more complex and subjective element to storytelling in video games? There have never been more complex characters in a video game ever.
Finally the ending is so bittersweet and heart wrenchingly sad that I cannot believe how pitch perfect it is. The final flashback to Joel had me in near tears and perfectly wrapped up Ellie and Joels relationship up whilst also serving fans closure. I wished Ellie could have sat with Joel on that porch forever. From seeing the depravement of Abbies would be grave at the end to the painful to watch final fight between Abbie and Ellie. The ending is long and masterful and finishes with a few subtle but unfathomably powerful moments. Ellie's lost finger making her unable to play the guitar properly, the Moth symbol on Joel's guitar and Ellies arm and the desolation of the happy family home. All sad and happy, good and bad but ultimately amazing.
Music is amazing, graphics are amazing, and the gameplay was very good. Refined from the first game but not enough to warrant a 10. Also Tommy was the weakest character in the game for me and served little purpose other than to set the final chapter in motion. A narrative tactic rather than a three dimensional character. I have no time for people getting annoyed at the games diverse casting of race, gender and sexuality. When the story is as strong as it is these elements don't affect the game at all.
All in all, this truly is a once in a generation game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've waited 7 years for this game and Naughty Dog surpassed itself yet again. The graphics, the mechanics, the atmosphere, and the story are amazing. The Horse and boat mechanics are very smooth, it didn't feel as clunky compared to the first game. Same with the character mechanics; it felt very quick and responsive.

I love the new craftables and the redesign of the Stalkers. The stalkers in the first game felt more like the runners, they didn't feel like its own infected stage compared to the second game. I'm glad ND made it a bit more unique and fun to fight.

I really like the story; I love how you play as Ellie in the first part full with rage to seek your revenge; I also love how ND makes you play as the "villain" Abby in the second part. The first game was very bias in viewpoint because you are mainly playing as Joel and I love how they switched it up in Part 2. A story can have multiple climaxes and viewpoints and TLOU2 did that fairly well.

When I first played Abby, I didn't really have much feelings towards here. I tried to keep an open mind about the character. And surprisingly, I came to like here more and more as her story progress. I love the relationship between her and the Sepharites kids. The only thing i didn't like was the awkward love triangle between Abby, Owen, and Mel but I can understand how they can be foils to Ellie's, Jesse's, and Dina's relationship.

The game completely drained all of my emotions. I was struggling to fight Abby in the end. I knew her past self was completely during the pillar scene. Both Ellie and Abby were husks of their previous selves. Ellie suffers from PTSD and lost of friends and her father figure. Abby Lost all here friends (but Lev) and suffered nightmares even if she got her revenge.

The Last of Us Part 2 story was more than just about revenge, it was more about forgiveness and acceptances. During the scene where Ellie was drowning Abby in the last fight she had a flashback of her and Joel; that flashback was predominantly talking about forgiveness, Ellie forgiving Joel. That struck a cord, Ellie knew killing Abby was not worth it, it was only going to continue the cycle (maybe Lev seeking revenge if Ellie kills Abby and so on).

Sometimes in life the best closure is to forgive and to accept. In the end, Ellie forgives Joel and accepts his death and both Ellie and Abby forgave one other knowing revenge would be childish.

What's interesting in this game is that there is a lot of parallels in this game. Specifically toward the end of the game, Abby and Lev (during the pillar and beach scene) parallels Joel and Ellie during the hospital scene. That was a nice detail. Overall this game is great! Definitely in my eyes out did it's predecessor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite all the disappointment and bad feelings that have come out in response to this game, it's still one of the best experiences I've ever received from Naughty Dog/gaming in general. I watched the leaks before playing (had my best friend watch too) and we were even more excited to play. My first playthrough was literally all over the place, but replaying the game on Survivor+ is definitely worth a shot. Enemy AIs are aggressive, sneaky, and not blind. On having an "open mind" and being a huge fan of the first game, I figured that I would enjoy the story regardless of how it turned out. The gameplay and graphics were enough to be excited about alone. The best review for this game I've heard went along the lines of, "0/10 for making us smoke the Devil's lettuce, 10/10 for letting us punch sh*t as Abby."

Seriously, I ended up loving the story and characters more than I expected, especially the "unlikable" ones/parts. Even from the leaks, I was able to sympathize with Abby's motivations and actions. She kills for survival and revenge just as much as any other badass character in their world. I immediately understood why Joel had to die. Now, I may have also gotten really drunk to the point where I was throwing up/having flashbacks of Joel's death like Ellie (which, funnily enough, directly prevented me from writing this review sooner; better that I wrote this sober ig), but my point is, the impact of Joel's death is seen and felt clearly through this game's general reception. It's quite depressing and upsetting. I don't want to insult his character more than it has already been, but Joel wasn't a good person for all that he did in the first game. He took away Ellie's choice and he would do so again. He was just like Abby for many years after the outbreak too. Abby becomes like Joel (him being initially reluctant to protect Ellie) when she decides to protect Yara and Lev , who deserve much more love. You teach them to like dogs, they help you confront your fear of heights, and Yara gets a second chance to live which allows her to kill Isaac, cleverly concluding the WLF-Seraphite conflict. Lev is practically Ellie from the first game (and, uh, trans pride ;3 maybe the TLoU3 will be a transitioning journey heh).
They get a second chance, but not without suffering some consequence. Joel dies for wiping out the Fireflies, Lev loses his mother and sister, Abby loses everyone and is enslaved for months before being saved by Ellie just to receive more abuse. Ellie loses her left ring and pinky fingers as a consequence for her revenge quest, tragically making her unable to play guitar the same as she once could. This game also has amazing set pieces, some of the best in gaming.

Ultimately, I can't imagine a stronger motivation for a revenge story than Joel. You get the feeling early on that your actions and everyone else's are morally ambiguous. Who can say that someone or something is morally right or wrong when our story revolves around brutally killing other survivors just like us? The Last of Us Part 2 is not it's predecessor and it shouldn't be, though it does expand upon everything that the first game was and I'm glad that this story got to be told and that they didn't end it at Part 1. At the same time, I do feel bad for the people let down by this game, but come on guys, it's at least a 7/10 lol.

for me, someone who loved Tlou's story and characters (the gameplay not as much, it needed all the things that this game polishes) this is just perfect. I rate 9/10 only bc there's a detail with the ammo that I don't like: When you improve any guns magazine it doesn't allows you to have more than 12 bullets (regarding to Abbies pistol) so if you improve the gun's mag, you'll still take 10 for me, someone who loved Tlou's story and characters (the gameplay not as much, it needed all the things that this game polishes) this is just perfect. This is a genuinely well made game. Hats off to ND. Sure, there are sections where the game felt like it was dragging - this happened in the second half, where i wanted to proceed further with the story while the game kept throwing more enemies and levels at me. This is my only complaint. Apart from that, this game is phenomenal.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story we didn’t know we needed, not the story we were envisioning. Joel’s death was gruesome and grim just as it should be—The Last of Us is a terrifying world and the characters are beaten down by it. Anything else would have been doing a disservice to the bleak world NaughtyDog created in the first game. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but I think NaughtyDog went a bold direction and explored what it means to be vengeful, what the cost of violence is, and how even those we grew to love in the first game are flawed and corrupted by the world and what they see around them. The AI is much more intelligent and their interactions, cries of agony and anguish for their lost friend or dog is very believable and as a player I felt guilt and uncomfortable with my actions. I've never had a game make me feel that way before and I appreciate it for the level of immersion it provided for that to be possible. It is a bold direction for Naughty Dog but one I very much enjoyed. It's not the best story driven game I've ever played but I admire the direction they took. It was bold, they didn't take the easy route and provide a cookie cutter copy of the first game to appease fans, its realistic to the setting of the game. Later part of the story shows me those ‘badies’ are just like you and me, good and dear to their friends, trying to protect them, or failing that, avenge them. It is an emotional rollercoaster that grip my heart tightly. It has been 2 days since my playthrough and I just can't stop thinking about it.
IF you are OK with a linear story where the flow of major events is 100% scripted, like a film, and IF you don't mind non-sequential story-telling (Think Westworld tv series, or Money Heist), then I will wholeheartedly recommend you give this a try.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished The Last of Us part II and I’d give it a 9.5/10. If this game could be described as a quote it would be “An eye for eye ends up making the whole world blind.” This game beautifully captures the brutality of never ending violence In part II the story gives real consequences to each characters actions. People who hate the story simply don’t understand its message or are obnoxiously in love with a character and never want to see harm done to them (which is extremely childish). ‬

The Last of Us I & II are games where people die. It’s a violent, scary, and brutal world. Giving a character never ending luck not only discredits the story but is a slap in the face to fans. Joel and Ellie are NOT immortal. Get over it. ‬

Bringing back the theme of never ending violence (a cycle of violence). Joel and Ellie are beloved characters but they are by no means good people. They’ve both killed innocent people.‬

Did Joel deserve what happened to him? If you say no then let me ask you this did all those fireflies deserve to die? Did the world deserve to be robbed of their chance at curing the world? Millions of lives for Ellie’s life? Is that fair? That’s why this story is so good. ‬

This story is so good because if you put yourself in the shoes of any one of these characters you can find a way to justify their actions.‬

If you’re Joel: you lost Sarah and didn’t have the chance to save her. With Ellie you have a chance to save her and you love her like she’s your daughter. As Joel you can easily justify every action he made. ‬

If you’re Abby: your father was murdered by a man who killed most of the fireflies. You want justice to be served. As Abby you’re justified in your actions. ‬

If you’re Ellie: you’re father figure and a man you love dearly was beaten to death in front of you, BRUTALITY. You want revenge. You will kill anyone and do anything to get justice (sounds familiar? Abby was on the same mission). As Ellie you’re justified in your actions. ‬

The ending of the game and the reason Ellie didn’t go through with killing Abby is because if she did 1 it wouldn’t bring Joel back and 2 it would just continue the cycle of violence. Ellie understood why Abby was after Joel. Ellie could see herself in Abby. ‬

If we were to never start out as Joel and Ellie but as Abby we would view Ellie as the ‘bad guy’. They did an amazing job with this story. ‬

The game was great. It was not SJW trash. It didn’t push any sort of SJW narrative. Most of the Hate about the game is blown out of proportion. It’s a game you have to experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For the most part the Last of us Part 2 was really enjoyable. The stealth, gunplay and overall gameplay was advanced from the first game. The graphics were amazing some of the best that I have ever seen rivaling such games like Red dead Redemption 2 and God of War. The Sound design and the soundtrack were both really incredible some of the best sound design ever, I especially love the sound of shattering glass sounded amazing each time.

But lets get to the most controversial part of the game the story itself. Characters from the first were almost completly different before especially Joels brother tommy who behaves almost nothing like the first game. Joels the death was one of the worst deaths in an entertainment product and wasn´t at all justified. Also most of the characters were really terribly written and I didn´t care for them, only jesse, ellies friend but he was killed anyway so it didn´t matter at the end. Lets get to the most controversial new character in the game, the plot twist with her parents being the doctors that Joel kills at the end of the first was really dumb. Abby generally wasn´t an interesting character to beginn with and her friends were even worse. They all get killed and you don´t even care for them and I don´t even want to start about the laughable sex scene in Abbys part of the game. Also the devs clearly wanted to give abby a lot of screentime considering that this was supposed to be focused more on ellie and it becomes even more because in the course of the game gets the best weapons and equipment. The ending to this game was very dissapointing basiclly making my 30 hours journey worthless and ellie just wondering off in the distance all one basiclly achieving nothing.

At the end the Last of Us 2 was still really enjoyable and fun for the most part. Even tough it is sad to see what this franchise has turned into. It even more saddens me that Naughty Dog could have done so much better looking at their last few games like Uncharted 4. Even tough I gave this game such a high score I am still very dissapointed in Neil Druckmann and his team.

It is 2020 but yet there are people who will take the time to "review" a game they never finished or base their opinion off of leaks. This game deserves to be played and the story needs to be experienced in order to provide a true opinion. Naughty Dog improved on the gameplay from the original and gave us something new and different for the story instead of a rehash of the original.

I can really understand the disappointment that many of the series fans share with this sequel. This is not the continuation of the story that most expected. This is not the continuation of the story that most expected. To summarize the negative response (even the zero score reviews), players that feel let down enjoyed/loved the gameplay, graphics, and sound, but they hated the story - a story that they feel took a big dump on their beloved characters from TLOU 1 and that felt like an unnatural and unwanted continuation of the story. I disagree.

Let's start off with the negative. I played on survivor difficulty and tried to collect as many resources and collectibles as possible. This created a couple of extra hours of searching, which was extra tiresome at the beginning of the game. There is a lack of cinematics (story) in this section as well, which assisted in a sluggish start. Also, because of my playstyle, a game much longer than anticipated, started to feel veeery long.

What we all think is great is the gameplay, graphics, and sound. The game is incredibly rich in detail, with sound bits and animations that make the gameplay more alive and organic than any game ever before.

The story. I did not like it in the beginning. The flashbacks were first met with heavy skepticism on my part. While I was getting closer to the end, everything fell into place. In the very end, they accomplished extremely well at delivering a feeling that most negative reviewers hated - a feeling of pointlessness.

The story was a bold choice, and I love it and I love them for making it. Some feel like this "turn" was an unnatural continuation of the story, which is not an opinion I share. Seeing how the last game ended, I believe that the thematics of this sequel were the only way to move forward. The story is daring and brilliant, and they truly accomplished to make me feel very conflicted about the actions I had to undertake as my character in the game.

One important thing to note. Similar too many negative reviewers, I hate media that become political/ideological, because it never sells me something that feels/is true. This is not it. This is an exploration of violence, the act and the consequences. However, a solution is never forced upon us. We are just left with its inevitable devastation of the characters and societies in this post-apocalyptic world.

It is a unique story and a fantastic accomplishment to say something true about revenge and violence. No solutions delivered. The game delivers a story that feels more true to the human experience than most post-apocalyptic series or movies available.

I absolutely loved everything with the first game. But if you were hoping for some kind of happy twist or conclusion after how Last Of Us 1 ended or if you wish to see Joel and Ellie live happily ever after, despite all the murder in the first story - this is not the game for you.
This game picks up where the last game ended, deals with it, and forces you to see the bigger picture. If that sounds interesting - buy this game and prepare for feelings you did not expect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having just platinumed the game a couple hours ago, I feel like I’ve had enough experience to actually give a review of this game, unlike many of the mindless drones who have given this game a 0/10 out of spite. A 0/10 review for almost any game is a slap in the face. A slap in the face for all of the hardworking programmers, QA testers, environment artists, actors, and everyone else involved. Whether you agree with the decisions the story makes, The Last of Us Part II is objectively NOT a 0/10. The graphics and environments are gorgeous. The attention to detail on display here is awe-inspiring. The actors behind these beloved characters give 110% and I would be baffled and angry if Ashley Johnson got little to no awards for her performance. Her performance is nothing short of breathtaking. Laura Bailey, Troy Baker, Ian Alexander, and Shannon Woodward all knock it out of the park with their performances as well. The animations team behind this game are some of the best in the business. Everything from the small nuances you see while managing your guns to the wide dodges you execute while in melee combat, it’s all top tier. The music by Gustavo Santaollala is nothing short of spectacular, just like the first game. You cannot look at me with a straight face and say to me that these things are bad. A 0/10 means that absolutely nothing is redeemable. A 0/10 is among the ranks of Big Rigs Over the Road Racing, or Ride to Hell: Retribution, or E.T. for the Atari. Those games have NO redeeming quality. I understand I’m probably speaking to a brick wall here, but if you take a second to look back on the game with even somewhat of an open mind, it becomes obvious that this game deserves so much more than a 0. Does it deserve a 10/10? I wouldn’t say so, but a 0/10 is an absolute insult, something Part II is far from.

The combat is taken up to the next level in this game as the stealth mechanics and gunplay are massively improved, almost feeling akin to Metal Gear Solid V and it’s amazing action-stealth gameplay. The story, while a lot of the plot points were spoiled for me, didn’t disappoint. If you have an open mind, and take these characters for who they are and not just “the girl who killed Joel”, then you might find yourself going on a journey with them that you didn’t expect enjoying as much as you did. Ellie’s journey as well as Abby’s are deep, emotional, and heartbreaking. The story is more than just “violence is bad” like a lot of critics of this game say it is. It’s a story about redemption, hate, love, and most of all, forgiveness. It’s about the lengths one will go to to destroy their entire well being for one goal, a goal that they might not even be satisfied with. It’s a story about questioning your morals, what you’re fighting for, and who the true enemies are in your life. It’s a story that deeply impacted me throughout my first 25 hour playthrough. You might not like that Joel died. You might not like that Abby doesn’t die. You might not like a lot of things in this story, and that’s fine.

The story is obviously not for everyone, and I don’t even consider it perfect. It’s got problems. The pacing is all over the place, with sections of the game sometimes stretching 1-2 full hours in one place. Another complaint: the sex scene. I understand the need for it in Abby’s arc, but we didn’t need to see the sex. The scene’s impact could’ve been accomplished through a cutaway, a lot like Ellie and Dina’s sex scene earlier in the game. The character of Mel is unlikable to me. Nothing wrong with Ashly Burch or her performance, I just didn’t like the way she was written. The flashbacks can often overstay their welcome, especially Abby’s. However, these complaints with the narrative are overshadowed by a lot of beautiful, emotional, depressing, and sometimes nauseating scenes. Ellie singing Take on Me is a standout, as were all of the flashbacks with Joel. All of my complaints about this game have to do with the story, it’s not perfect, but it’s far from the dumpster fire the leaks and leakers made it seem like it was (not to mention some of the details like Ellie dying were just flat out false).

I’m not saying you have to love this game, I’m not even saying you need to like it. I’m challenging you to see it from a different perspective. One that is unclouded by the leaks and bad reception it’s gotten from many people. If you play it again through that lens and still don’t like it, I appreciate the chance you gave it. This review was mainly aimed towards the people who are closed-minded and not understanding why people who like this game like it. It’s not better than the first. It’s not even better than a majority of Naughty Dog games, but I’m proud to say that I loved The Last of Us Part II. 9/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me just start off by saying that I have never played a game that was full of this much emotion and complexity. The game is incredibly beautiful, rich in details, the exploration and scenery was gorgeous and I really enjoyed the gameplay. Magnificent audio and level design and breathtaking graphics made this one of the most beautiful worlds ever created. The story is shocking and real. And overall the game is top tier and emotion filed journey that had me bawl my eyes out a few times but I will definitely be going through that again and getting that 100%.

As for the story...what I got from it is that this is a story about the cycle of revenge/violence and the strength and empathy required to let it go and end it.

Joel’s death was brutal and happened very quickly in the game and made me pause the game and put down my controller because it was so upsetting. But moving forward and seeing Abby’s side of the story, her experiences and feelings I realized those events/moments were necessary for the plot progression/character motivation. Now, don’t get me wrong, I hated Abby at first and was hoping Ellie would get to kill her by the end of it but we all know the cycle of revenge is never supposed to be pretty and if coming to this game and the story of it, you expected everyone to live through the story, I’m sorry but it just doesn’t make sense to me and it’s not realistic. I know I did not expect it to be pretty and that’s how it was.

Revenge never ends well, it’s a vicious cycle which takes the actions of someone to break. If it doesn’t break people will get hurt/killed in the process, it’s just inevitable and it’s what happened here. First with Abby’s dad and Joel, and then other casualties along the way on both sides. I can’t say I love it but I can’t say I hate it either because I understand it.

What we saw with Ellie after she killed Nora, Mel and Owen, and at the farm later on, isn't someone that enjoys killing and is comfortable with it. We saw/felt the guilt that she carries with her for it. We saw her PTSD, flashbacks, read about her not being able to sleep nor eat, or enjoy her ''happy'' ending with Dina and JJ at the farmhouse. It’s literally eating her away and breaking her down and we can see that, both physically and mentally throughout the game. She was so consumed by rage and need of revenge that she lost herself on the way, to the point she couldn’t continue living like that and had to/needed to go after Abby for herself and for those around her. And by letting Abby and Lev go she ended her cycle, the same way Abby did previously with letting Ellie and Dina go at the theater.

Now, I would have definitely preferred the story alternated between Ellie and Abby’s stories for the Seattle days. It would have helped with the pacing and that way I wouldn't be rushing through Abby's parts of the story just wanting it to be over because I was so worried for Ellie.

One other thing that has been bugging me for a few hours now tho, and it’s not necessary the story’s fault but rather my own for being so attached to a fictional character but what’s new there lol. But anyway what has been bugging me is that essentially Abby got the better ending imo. I mean with the end game title screen and the boat being docked near the Avalon/Catalina Island implies she and Lev made it safely to the Fireflies. So Abby is going back to her “dream“ life with a loving person by her side.

Meanwhile, we have Ellie walking out of the farmhouse to the woods which implies she is headed back to Jackson to be with Dina and JJ. She broke this revenge/violence cycle by sparing Abby's life and letting go of her immense need of revenge. And sure, like I said, it isn’t supposed to be ideal BUT it just sadness me seeing my sweet baby girl hurt, all alone and not being able to play the guitar properly in that dream farmhouse she and Dina got, when being alone is what she feared the most and playing the guitar is something that Joel taught her and connects her to him and is something that brings her comfort. And the fact that she left for Jackson without the same guitar Joel gave her just brakes my heart even more. I get it symbolizes letting go of her anger towards both Joel and Abby but oh man :(

And let me just say one more thing. If you played the game and didn’t enjoy it that’s completely fine, I’m not here to disregard your opinion. I just have an issue with people who haven’t played the game going around saying the game is terrible and giving it bad scores/reviews all across the board only because they heard/saw bits and pieces of the story/game that they didn’t like and completely dismissed the rest of it solely on those few bits and pieces. I just find that very unfair and pitiful thing to do. And sadly I’m seeing a lot of those so that’s why I’m saying it.

And to the anti-LGBT peeps out there, you can go **** yourself!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While not *quite* as tight in its storytelling as the first game (both Abby and Ellie’s individual sections drag a little) the ambition of this sequel is incredible and something that I haven’t seen in a story-driven game to this level before. Naughty Dog took risks in their storytelling that ultimately paid off in their intention to make an entire player-ship question their motives and morals throughout. For all of the complaints about this being a game that ‘disrespects’ Joel, ultimately this wound up being a love-letter to Joel, while somehow simultaneously understanding how his actions could drive somebody to revenge, allowing us to understand their motives at the same time. Gameplay is much improved from the first, with general encounters being considerably more engaging, and set-pieces, especially the Scar Island Escape allowing for the gameplay to be leagues ahead of the first game. It’s also beautiful enough to almost qualify as next-hen, and ultimately will be remembered as *the* game of this generation of PlayStation games. Masterpiece. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. *My first recommendation to someone looking to play this game, replay the first game before playing this. I think it really makes all the moments in the first half of the game feel even more powerful than they already are.*

I think this game is getting way too bad of a wrap from a lot of people who either
    A) read the spoilers and never even gave the game a playthrough or..
    B) watched a streamer speed run it, paying zero attention to what the game was trying to portray

It goes without saying that the graphics and gameplay are incredible as you would expect from this game, but this obviously isn't everyone's problem with the game.
Joel: for everyone complaining about Joel's death, replay the first game before you play this and try not to get so mad when your favorite character dies (I don't remember people crying when Ned Stark got his head chopped off). Joel serves as a catalyst for Ellie's story in this game and it his death was very emotional for me keeping in mind a played both games back to back. This probably made it a more impactful death.
Abby: by far the best part of this game (very controversial apparently). Her story is very similar to Joel's in the first game where she starts off very dehumanized because of your hatred for her after she kills Joel, but as the game goes on she regains a lot of that humanity (in the same way as Joel) by her protection of Yara and Lev. Everyone seems to be so blinded by their hatred for Abby that they refuse to even attempt to let Abby grow on them, and by that point, you can't ever develop an honest opinion on the game.
Ellie: they push Ellie's bloodlust so far in this game that I began to dislike Ellie which I think was the entire point. i think you're supposed to see Ellie as unreasonable in her quest for revenge primarily to make you better understand Abby's side. Especially with Ellie going back to try kill Abby again at the end, it becomes so psychotic that you just start to lose it at Ellie, she has a family to look after now and she is selfish enough to still go for revenge. It's effective in the way that by the very end you don't want to kill Abby whereas I'm sure we all would've loved to at the start.
Flashbacks: really effective for both characters development, especially Ellie's at the end of the game which helps you empathize with Ellie again

    Problems:
    A) The ending isn't the best, although I'm not annoyed that badly that Ellie goes back for Abby in the end, I think her forcing Abby to fight her was crazy as **** and probably too far. I think by that point Ellie should've just let her go straight up and that would've been more effective in resolving their conflict (Abby had already suffered enough by that point).
    B) The ordering is a bit off, I think it could've been interesting to put Abby's portion right after she kills Joel and maybe you would've felt more conflicted about Ellie taking revenge when you actually play as her rather than after the fact. But even if they changed this I think most people would still hate Abby irrationally.
    C) in playing as Abby for so long you do get a little lost in what Ellie is even fighting for (mainly just a problem with the massive gap in time between playing as Ellie and Abby)

    TL;DR
An overall really solid game with some flaws that are way overstated. Abby is easily the best part of the game and stole the show for me. The game fails with redeeming Ellie's actions as she becomes more and more obsessed with revenge (which was probably the point). And no, there is no SJW agenda in this game, anyone saying that is probably just scared of gay and non-gender conforming people.

it does, they went for a revenge plot for the story and that was known from the beginning. They chosen to fuel this vengeance powerfully. You feel the exact same as Ellie felt. This is a duel narrative story where every character is humanized and at first you fight it. But overtime it slowly grows on you.
The story was like a roller-coaster and it had caught my attention just as the original did.
I strongly recommend this game to anyone that owns a PS4.

This game took the gaming to a whole new level in every technical aspect, the story is deep and dark it's about two different people trying to get out of the vengeance loop and find there humanity along the way , one of the best games i have ever played and i have been playing for more than 25 years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful graphics. Beautiful score and soundtrack, incredible motion capture and acting, intense moments, exciting gameplay, and nice stealth sections. For me, the story was powerful, thought provoking and very full-on. It’s very brutal at times, difficult to stomach at some points. The thing that separates people who like this game and those who don’t comes down to if you are feeling empathy for Abby, and characters like Lev reflecting Joel’s relationship with Ellie helped me to feel that empathy. Thanks to this, the ending was very satisfying, emotional. Expand

Great Gameplay, Acting, Graphics, Sound Effects and overarching story, but falls a little bit short of near perfect due to missing the mark slightly on its execution of a couple of story points

I hate zombie games and movies (except Zombieland and World War Z). I hate horrors.
But I loved TLoU1 thanks to the story and relation between Joel and Ellie.

But I loved TLoU1 thanks to the story and relation between Joel and Ellie.

The Part II is built on this relation, which was complicated by what Joel did and told at the end of Part 1. There are even some scenes in the same time as the Part 1, so we can live those time once again.

But the weight of the second story is much more heavy. I felt like a Charlie Sheen in Platoon - I could observe two similar persons eaten by hate and violence (somehow similar to Sheen observing two sergeants). And like in the Platoon similar persons become totally different. One chose hate to the end for any cost, even its own best friends and loved ones. The second... is changing on our eyes and chose redemption, compassion and hope.

Meanwhile I could also watch the war, it's chaos and lies. At the end of the game I did what I could to not kill anymore if didn't need it, as I understood that what I was thinking about enemies before was simply not true - both sides had their rights and both were run by lunatics. And because the game shows violence so strong, I felt like I would really kill. And I felt these kills were bad.

It was great adventure and great story. But still I hated the zombie parts - that's why I take 1 point from 10 and my honest score is strong 9.

Great game, very playable, visually beautiful. The story is good, there are people who expect a game to be a Stanley Kubrick movie. The only thing is, there could have been more innovation in the mechanics. Beyond that a very enjoyable game.

I understand why the game got hate after Joel died, but we all knew it was going to happen. otherwise, the story was great with a lot of unexpected moments and twists which makes the game interesting. I still think the ending should be a multiple-choice to kill or let Abby. Graphics are 10/10 all the way throughout the game. But the thing that takes my score to 9 instead of 10 is the waste of 10 hours playing as Abby Expand

If you are into a gripping emotional story and rollercoaster ride than play this game..Yes Joel dies but it fuels Ellie in my opinion that's the point, it definitely was a hard pill to swallow. Than you play as his killer, I hated it for the first 2 hours of playing Abby but ended up enjoying my time with her. I feel the world wasn't ready for this game. The game does have some issues with the flow of the game but besides that, i enjoyed it. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
