The Last of Us Part II, is an amazing sequel, but it doesn't top the elegance and tightness of the first game.
While the gameplay has improved greatly, game world got bigger, the story is way more fleshed out and writing is intricate and plays well off of the main elements in the first game, it wasn't quite as enjoyable.

I commend Naughty Dog for their brave writing decisions, but this very ambitious game just lost some of the magic that was in the The Last of Us.
Also something I haven't seen being pointed out, I encountered many glitches during my playthrough, mostly with melee combat, which feels more real and has more impact this time around, but the sudden tone down of the "enemy magnet" made me punch the air several times, because I'm used to my attacks getting connected with the enemies automatically.

Minor pacing issues, still a great game overall. Pretty much comes down to the question if you can accept Abby as a playable character. If not, the game pretty much falls apart. I´m happy I enjoyed her side of the story.

The struggle throughout the game contribute to the harsh gritty reality of that world and it also adds to the storyline in a way that only video game can do. I don't think the plot twists were shocking at all, but in fact, the motives of main characters are straight forward, relatable and predictable. The juxtaposition of the two main protagonists is done to a great effect.

I think TLOU 2 is a game that is very difficult to talk about, because it is the experience of each player that is important here - everyone has a different experience. For me, the brainchild of Naughty Dog is a piece of work that cannot be evaluated by any assessment, it must be passed in person (not on YouTube!). The only thing that can be said for sure is that we will not see such an epoch-making work in all senses for a long time. And yet-for me, this is a candidate for the Game of the Year.
    SECOND: leaks, scandals, Metacritic score.
If there's one thing I've learned from all the hype surrounding The Last Of Us Part II, it's that if people on the Internet want to hate something, they'll do it, nothing will stop them. No arguments, facts, etc.
Well, OK, you can continue to "Kill" the game, the result of hard work of the whole Studio.... And I will go on to pass, get a lot of emotions, enjoy a lot of small details, follow the plot, and then even "New Game +" start.
I just can't understand, me and an army of Hyper-satisfied people, are we really playing the same game? Why do I understand, motivations, actions, why does it not interfere with the orientation of Ellie and Abby's appearance, why do plot twists seem appropriate and logical?.... Is it I'm crazy enough that I like it, or the INTERNET?
How I sympathize with Drachmann..... What he feels? I think seeing a score of 4.9 points, reading like that, etc., is not the most pleasant thing on Earth.....
You know, no one paid me money for my opinion, but I fully support and understand the decision to make an unusual sequel, Yes, it was controversial, but it's cool! This means that it can be discussed, analyzed, and thought about. Is this not an indicator of a good work, the result of CREATIVITY and effort? Do you think that an abstract "correct" continuation would be better? Most likely, we would get a "cotton", "Safe" something that would be like chewing gum without taste, it would just be boring....
Third (and most important): Respect Drachmann, Respect To Naughty Dog!

Even though I feel turbulent about it, though maybe I'll be clearer in how i feel about it later, I know that a game has never made me feel like this (maybe the first game) in terms of tearing me apart. Few movies has managed that for me. (Spoiler: seeing the shell that Ellie becomes is really tough. Ellie goes on this journey to kill Abby because she killed Joel. But at the end she doesn’t kill her she allows her to leave. Saying the theme of this game is just “revenge is bad” is doing a disservice as it’s such a surface level analysis of the game. The theme is about the cycle of violence and the destruction it leads to, and forgiveness. Wether you liked the story or not, the technical aspect of the game is objectively some of the best in the business. From the big step up in gameplay from the last game to the jaw-dropping visuals, from the music and sound design to the level design, everything is vastly improved from Naughty Dog’s previous installments. The gameplay is gripping and intense, the graphics are some of the best I've ever seen and the acting and voice acting is top notch. My only issue is with the pacing of the story. The story itself is brilliant, although there are parts that break up the tension such as playing 10 hours of gameplay after an intense moment is left unfinished, forcing you to wait to see the conclusion. On repeat runs if you expect the 10 hour gap, I imagine it being more enjoyable. On your first run however it can be a bit tiresome. I also thought it was a tad too long but that's my preference. Overall this game is a masterpiece and definitely in my top 10 of all time. Expand

The Last of Us II is an undeniably divisive yet great game and one which I would recommend to any who would listen. Though the story is weaker than the first game I still found it incredibly enjoyable. It does lack an element of hope which may cause some to stop playing, however, if- like me- you enjoy darker gritty stories then you shouldn't find this a problem.
    My only major complaint
The Last of Us II is an undeniably divisive yet great game and one which I would recommend to any who would listen. Though the story is weaker than the first game I still found it incredibly enjoyable. It does lack an element of hope which may cause some to stop playing, however, if- like me- you enjoy darker gritty stories then you shouldn't find this a problem.
My only major complaint with the story lies in a few pacing issues (particularly in the first half) as well as tension build ups which are dragged on to the point where the tension simply dies out. There is one particular example where you are forced to wait a huge chunk of the game for one scene's tension to pay off. It would have also been nice to spend more time with 'that character' before 'that event' in the early game in order to make 'that event' a little more impact-full for newer players. Despite all of that, I found all character stories to be excellent and engaging and going into the game's second half and finale I found myself questioning my own decision in a beautiful and emotional battle of morals.
That brings me on to the gameplay which is nothing short of excellent. For me, the mediocre gameplay was the only thing holding back the original masterpiece and believe me when I tell you that the Last of Us part II takes everything that was good about the original's core gameplay and injects it with gallons of mobility, combat options, stealth options and fun! Whereas in the first game, the combat often felt like a chore stopping me from reaching the next story beat, here, the combat feels necessary and fun. Both new infected types are a blast to fight and the new human enemies are perhaps some of the most fun of all. Enemy AI is considerably smarter (though still slightly stupid at times (though this depends on the difficulty you play on) and enemies will actively keep you moving. Ally AI has also been greatly improved though I still noticed a few cases where my allies where quite obviously in view and not getting noticed. Nevertheless, the Last of US II's gameplay is nothing short of excellent and I greatly enjoy the feature which allows you to replay encounters you have already finished on different difficulties without having to replay the whole game. Players are also given the option to replay specific chapters which works incredibly well with the many collectables you can scour the rich environments for,
Finally, I will mention the graphics, though I'm sure you already know what I'm going to say. The Last of Us part II is the most gorgeous game I have played to date. The settings are stunning. The art work is stunning. The characters and animations are stunning. I also really appreciated the option to unlock and view concept art and virtual models and spent a considerably amount of time taking in each individual gorgeous detail which makes the Last of Us II's visuals so stunning.

As a side note, the 'political correctness' is not shoved in your face at all and most certainly does not ruin the game.

Overall, The Last of Us II is a great game. Is it as good as the original? In some aspects no and is some yes. Would i recommend it? Absolutely.
I don't play games to be pampered and given exactly what I expect; I play games to feel something and the Last of Us part II will certainly make you feel.

The puzzles feel much more subtle and tricky and less bland compared to the puzzles of part I. Naughty Dog never fails with graphics and environments and TLOU2 is no exception. Combat environments feel very fluid, stealth feels even more viable than the original because of how mobile you're allowed to be. Overall the gameplay feels familiar but more polished. Cons: The story is told in a non linear fashion which I enjoyed, however some parts are noticeably slower than others. Most of the game kept me engaged either with story beats or new gameplay features or new enemies, but there were some times where I felt like I wanted to see more of a different part of the plot, and the part I was playing through didn't do quite enough to pull me in. The game isn't long enough. In all seriousness the game felt quite long especially after having just completed the first game, but even still as I approached the end I kept hoping I was far away from the credits.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, for a game to be a 10 on my scale it would have to be something earth shattering amazing that I would play for 100+ hours. I’d say TLOU1 was very close. I’d give it a 9.8. I’d give TLOU2 a 9.3 to be specific. Second, if you rated this game anything under a 7 you are being ridiculously unfair and you didn’t go into this experience with an open mind, or you didn’t enjoy the first game, maybe it’s just not your genre of choice, but if that were the case you would not have played the second.

It’s the same incredible gameplay from the first game, Naughty Dog didn’t try to fix what wasn’t broken. The story was a lot more ambitious than the first, with the story/writing being the chief complaint. The first game had a very tight and focused plot. Whereas the first game felt like an interactive movie, part 2 felt like an interactive TV series. As for the story, it hit some lulls (TLOU1 never did) and I didn’t particularly enjoy the flashbacks, but playing the two timelines was so compelling and suspenseful. The first day with Abby I was disappointed to even be playing with her and the first day was a bit boring. Day 2 and 3 with Abby was the highlight of the game though. At the end of the day, I play games to have fun. I judge them way differently from movies and books. I play video games specifically to have fun. If a game were truly anything under a 6, there’s just no way I’d have the patience to see through a subpar 20+ campaign to the end. If you played through this whole game and gave it a 5 or a 6, you’re full of crap. If you have it under a 5, you’re a troll that isn’t to be taken seriously. It’s very clear what happened to user reviews of this game. If a game has replay-ability its at least a 7. I will absolutely play TLOU II again, probably several times over the next 5-10 years. It was an extremely fun game, bottom line. I didn’t want this game to end. But I will say the ending was a bit too dragged out. The part where you’re tracking down Abby was an absolute blast though. So to wrap it up, no it’s not perfect, no it’s not good as the first but I wasn’t expecting it to be or demanding it to be. But I have to reiterate how damn good of a game it was and how much fun I had playing it. I feel not even the slightest bit of disappointment.

The game makes you like Abby after everything she did by using such great characters ( Lev being my favorite side character), and don`t even get started on those BEAUTIFUL landscapes you play in, the combat is very good, and the big problem with most people is the story of this game but mannn is the story good, it`s not all sun shine and fun it`s portrays real problems with hatred, revenge and the cost of those things. The only reason this game isn`t a 10/10 is a think they could have added some more parts of story before you start to play abby, so you don`t lose so much momentum, and they could have explained a very small amount of what happened the the characters in the end. This game definitely doesn`t deserve a 5.0. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Obviously the user score isn't reflective of the quality of the game itself, but rather the projected insecurities of those that haven't even played it. When the game was leaked, people criticized it for the way that they disrespectfully killed off Joel or how Abby is supposedly trans. Now that the game is out, all of those points just seem to fizzle away. The truth is there, plain and simple... Naughty dog made an incredible game. They killed off Joel early on in a brutal way but the reasoning behind that was expanded upon later on. I had seen people stop playing or give up the game at that point, even going so far as destroying their disk. Those people will miss out on the context and expansion of Joel's character via the various flashback exposition moments between Ellie and Joel in the off moments between Part 1 and 2. Joel is a fantastic character, an excellent father figure, but a **** awful human being for what he decided to do to save Ellie. He shot up a hospital, killed Marlene, killed the only medical professionals that could have created a cure for all of the innocent people left alive, just for him to have his daughter figure still in his life. Over the course of the first game as you progress by killing dozens of people but those were usually cases of self defense, the moment Joel first killed in Seattle, he was strictly on the offensive and a lot of people were desensitized to the fact that he was killing due to them just being random enemies just like every other encounter. The Last of Us Part 2 expands on that by humanizing the WLF. While brutal, they're still humans that are just trying to survive. They appear to be backpacked survivors just like Joel and Ellie, they call each other by name, they get devastated upon discovering the bodies of one of their friends/comrades/dogs that have been slaughtered by you or the Scars. This new perspective simply expands on what you're really facing and if you're really the good guy in the story. It's highly debatable if what Joel and Ellie do in the games that would be considered "right" but those lines become more apparent the more you kill. Joel was a selfish monster that let his own feelings of losing a daughter again take over, dooming humanity. I've discussed this with others and people came up with the argument that Joel had finally found something worth fighting for and living for in a game where it constantly was showing you that humanity was beyond redemption or repair. The more you see Jackson thriving in the second game, you see that a chance at a normal life was a reality that nobody had considered and that a vaccine would have saved so many innocent lives of civilized people. Ellie begins to follow in Joel's footsteps by murdering every one in her path in order to enact vengeance against anyone involved in the death of Joel. An emotional, irrational, response to people that were perfectly in their rights to hunt down a mass murderer of innocent doctors and civilians looking to better the world. Sure it may feel cathartic and satisfying to hunt down these people and get your revenge but that difference in perspective gets thruster onto you when you begin to play as Abby. You peer into the lives you've destroyed or devastated in the events of the first game and you see that you're not the hero that your protagonistic bias has led you to believe. You're becoming the horrifying monster that Joel was, and in that the game's message became clear. This is the circular path that revenge will always be. Abby understands it better than Ellie which is why Abby leaves Ellie alive TWICE. Which brings me to my second point, as of the release of the game the leaks were wrong in the regard that Abby is trans. She's not and that was confirmed. Regardless of if she was trans or not, it was clear just how much spite people had towards a character like her. She's not pretty and she's not meant to be pretty and it pissed people off that they're forced to play as "the ugly villain". I won't even begin to address the hatred against transgender individuals being the motivator for so many negative reviews because that's not a valid point to be making. Abby is muscular, built like a fridge with those broad shoulders. We see in the flashbacks she wasn't always that way, but after the death of her innocent father she trained hard to be able to be strong enough to kill the man who killed him. Sure she might not be the most relatable character you've ever played in a video game, but her perspective was necessary to tell this two incredibly different sides to the same story. You're not meant to like her, you're meant to understand her. The game itself I feel had expanded quite nicely while staying true to the gameplay of the first. The controls were familiar but with an accessible expansion of convenience in terms of weapons and crafting. The strongest commendation I'd give is the sheer attention to detail when it comes to storytelling and gameplay. Expand

Joel and Ellie weren't samaritains in the first episode and that had consequences as well as the fact that the newly hated character of Abby isn't a bad character either. As such, the story is far for being simple and is yet bashed or mocked by people around here. Don't believe the hate hype. Try and the game and make your own opinion. I actually found this part as enjoyable as the first one.

Even though the game is much more accessible and more story-based than the first one, you can't truly experience it without going through it on "hard" or "survival" difficulty. It took me more than 30 hours to complete it and I enjoyed every second of it. You sometimes just need to step back, think for yourself, and consider the fact that a spin-off can never be the same as the original. It offers a new perspective by questioning his original point of view and his role on the first episode.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sometimes it take more than just play a game to understand it. The game not only is beautiful and the gameplay nice, the story makes you question choices and the path that you take. To acknowledge the greatness of this game you have to put aside your resentment playing as Abby and even though it’s easier to hate her and to want to see her dead, it’s a good reflection on humanity and the ability to understand each other. You don’t have to like her, nor forgive her. But you seriously lack empathy if you can’t understand her motives for what she’s done. The story is great in the sense that they didn’t sugarcoat anything and they stay truthful to what they wanted to tell as a story. Many games are too politically correct and lack strong statements. This one doesn’t and that’s why people have a hard time with it. It’s not what they wanted to see. The game is accused of being political and being propaganda for the lgbtq+ community among other things. Well if you think that you are too immature and too close minded to play grownup games.
The game is about hate, you’re not supposed to love it like you love playing animal crossing or fortnite. It’s supposed to make you feel anger and sadness and hate and grief. That’s precisely what makes it a great game. It’s not a perfect game but at least it takes risks and talks about important matters such as regret, love, hate, hope and redemption.
They are some big negative aspects of course like the fact that Abby and the other wolves aren’t very likeable or the events order could have been changed to help some players build a bit of empathy. Truth is I don’t like any of them either but I know enough with the little back story that has been given to us that they aren’t bad people to the core.
Finally the ending left me unsatisfied and even if I wished for a happier ending, a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel, I’m happy they didn’t give In stayed on the path they chose, telling you there’s no happy ending for revenge.

I loved this game. The graphics are great, the story is gripping and the gameplay is great. The only negative is sometimes the searching for loot game loop can get a little a stale but you need to do a bit of it to upgrade your gear.

A technical marvel, a divisive yet bold and impressive piece of storytelling. I get why it might not work for a lot of people, and it's not perfect as it has some structural and pacing issues, but I'm absolutely in love with this game.

In my first 9 hrs as I travel to Seattle i was so sad. I miss Joel. I dont like Dina to be with me. I want Joel. Why did you kill Joel, the main character??? My perspective at that point was really cloudy. But after finishing the whole game i saw what Naughty Dog did and it was brave, bold, and (for me) brilliant. I have never been immersed this much in a game. This was the first time that after 9 days of finishing the game i was still sad. I cant play other games. I was so depressed. This game is so powerful. Moving af.

Other factors such as gameplay, sound, visuals. Totally 10/10. There are just some things that i didnt so like for me overall the game is a 9/10.

That being said even though I have mixed feelings about this particular sequel, overall after having played through it, I believe it is a worthy followup to the original. For those who hate the game, I get it and I truly understand your feelings. But putting ones personal feelings aside, one has to look at this game realistically and objectively. Anyone who played the original game understands that coming into this one that there would be consequences for the choices Joel made at the end of Part 1. To think that in this sequel Joel would not face the repercussions of his actions in some way shape or form and that this would be simply copycat of the original is borderline naive to say the least and it would have made for an unrealistic and uncompelling story. Is this a happy, feel good sequel? Not by a long shot. But I respect Naughty Dog for not doing fan boy service and for having the courage to craft a story and game that challenges player's beliefs emotionally and philosophically . In time, I believe that history will judge the Last of Us Part 2 as one of the most groundbreaking games of all times. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay.. So I finished the game first time (didn't read spoilers) and I didn't know how to feel to be honest. It was a mixed emotions. At first I didn't like that Abby don't die but in the same time I know why Ellie spared her. I was sitting in my chair for few minutes trying to collect my thoughts and after that I immediately started the game all over again to try to understand a story even better. And I can tell you it is really good. People are raging becouse Joel gets killed, and I get that. I was mad too but if people just pull their heads from their ass they would understand why it had to be that way. You got mad becouse character that you loved dies and you are not trying to think even for a second why he died ? Hating a game just becouse someone that you like gets killed is seriously dumb. Joel is anti-hero. He is not good guy, but we played as him in the first game and we got his emotions connected with us. If im Joel I would do exact same thing. BUT, when you start thinking outside of the box, maybe you would understand the story. In the end while Ellie is drowing Abby, image of Joel pops up. (Later we see what was that conversation is all about). In that moment Ellie forgives Joel for what he is done but she understands what he is done and why Abby killed him. She forgives Joel and understands that she needs to forgive Abby too. When Ellie gets home, Dina already left and she is sitting with guitar trying to play but she is unable to play the only song that was reminding her of Joel becouse she lost her fingers. In all that hate and revenge she lost everything. She got what she was afraid the most. Ending up alone.

On the other side Abby also loses everyting. She lost it becouse of rage and revenge that she had for Joel.

This story is about revenge and forgiving. People are mad becouse Abby don't die, becouse they don't get what they wanted. They didn't get that happy ending where Ellie kills Abby and she gets to live happy till the rest of her life. Well no. That is what marks this game. That is why it is so different from other games and movies. Not every ending is a happy ending cliche. Neil Druckmann did something different and let me tell you that it takes balls to do stuff that he did with this game.

Now im not saying that this game is perfect, it has it's bad sides too. Especially while playing as Abby. Most of the time it's not that interesting and with some parts on the end I was so bored that I wanted to finish it just so I can get back to Ellie and see what is gonna happen. Im also sad this game got that political part, just becouse they knew that it's gonna be played in the whole world. I think that games are not a place for that.

Story is not that shocking like the first one, for example I could play first game as much as I want and every time I will get those same emotions like I am playing the first time. That is not the case with 2nd game.

A lot of people are posting bad reviews just becouse they read spoilers, but you really need to play the game to understand it.

About graphics and technical part, I think I don't need to say anything becouse it is extremley good that it left me speechless.

Overall I was thinking between 8 and 9 but I will give it a 9. Hopefully all this discussion about the game helps Neil and Naughty Dog to learn from they mistakes and (hopefully sooner than this one) deliver us The Last of Us Part 3. They set very high level with the first game that is really hard to beat but I think that this game has a lot of potential of delivering us something different.

    Thank you.

Although there were certain parts I wasn't happy with such as Abby's section because of how it strays to far from the main story for too long. Joel has to die no doubt about it plus he is old af. I dont see any additional role of him . Personally I find the story perfectly done

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Many of the still negative reviews are based on people who have barely played the game, or barely understood the deeper meanings of the game. Its definitely divisive and not for everyone, but sometimes for the wrong reasons. That said, I'm gonna get right into it. Joel Miller. He lost his daughter Sarah right at the start of the outbreak, and got separated from his brother Tommy. This would be Joel's entire world coming crashing down on him. For 20 years, he dealt in the Black Market, killed a lot of people and infected to survive. Probably done worse. Then he meets Tess. Tess probably would've been able to make Joel feel some degree of normalcy again. Maybe he would've had another kid. But Tess got bit and she passed, shortly after Joel met our favorite snarky and bratty teen, Ellie. They hated each other at first, man. Ellie would never listen to him, and she had such a mouth! It was hilarious at times. Joel got sick and was injured on top of it. Ellie had to go find medicine for him. After a while Joel started to get attached to her like she was his own daughter. Maybe he was finally able to move on from Sarah's death. Now we fast forward, and The Fireflies have realized how they can develop a vaccine (This is already point #1 and 2. A lot of it has to do with Spores, which is in the *air*, like a regular virus or infection.) using Ellie's mutated cordyceps growth. The only catch, is they'd have to kill her to remove it. Joel hears this and he is definitely not having it. This girl just made Joel start to be human again. Slowly getting rid of that hardened survivor exterior. He has a little girl to love again. He won't let anyone take that away from him, and even if it meant only being able to spend more time with her, he doesn't care about keeping the truth from her. Its a horrible, terrible, selfish act of love that anyone normal would find trouble parsing the morality of. This is what The Last of Us and Part II are all about. Not the black, and not the white. The GREY. Joel kills Dr. Jerry Anderson, Abby's father. He didn't have to. He could have knocked him out, maybe shot him in the legs. But he wasn't taking the chance of being chased. Joel even then kills Marlene, essentially Ellie's caretaker/surrogate mother. Joel tells Ellie her immunity had no purpose, that it meant nothing, because there are other immune people. Dozens, he says. This is another lie, of course. I love Joel, but that was all messed up. Fast forward to Joel and Ellie settling down in their new life in Jackson, Wyoming. Tommy and Joel specifically have fought barely any infected the past nearly 5 years, never mind people, sometimes only running into 1 or 2, or not even any at all. Imagine how much more relaxing their life is. Jackson has a welcoming policy when it comes to stragglers/strangers, and allowing them in the city. Thats why Joel saves Abby without a second thought and trusts her. Even going through Joel's house, HIS HOME, you can see how he has changed. He plays guitar on his porch at night, enjoying the peace. He woodcarves. He has a little picture of himself that Ellie drew for him. And its FRAMED! Joel got his life back, man! So before judging Joel's character simply because he "lets his guard down"....think of how his humanity has returned to him...! Joel over these years slowly got rid of the "everyone is an enemy" survivor mentality. This game is NOT a revenge story! Its ALSO a story about love, empathy, forgiveness and redemption. The reason we don't play as Abby first, or see her story first, is to show us a preview of what Ellie could and does become, going down the same path that Abby did. Showing us the cost and what it takes, what you lose in a quest for revenge. Ellie's journey sparked from her love for Joel, and Abby's for her love for her dad. There are so many layers to this story overall (part 1 and part 2 both) that its nearly impossible to address it all. Whether you enjoy this story hinges on whether you can understand Joel's death and Abby and move past protagonist bias, which is why its so important to address it. Abby's side of the story is about how her revenge has affected her, and what she finds to forgive herself and redeem herself, in caring for and protecting Lev and (to a tragic extent) Yara. At the end, Abby carries Lev away...just like Joel carried Ellie away. Ellie sees this and realizes what SHE has also lost. After fighting Abby she remembers her last night with Joel, and how she never got the chance to FORGIVE HIM, and can't forgive *herself*. Ellie might have never been able to forgive Joel. But she was willing to try. Abby might never forgive Ellie for Owen, Mel, and her other friends, but she was willing to try. Sparing her THREE TIMES! There's so much. It might be a bit messy, but I hope this gets the points across. Maybe this was more critical than I expected! Open your mind! Because I don't think any game should get a perfect 10, The Last of Us Part II gets a 9/10 from me. Expand

No. However, I think it is irrefutable to suggest that this game (not counting story, we'll get to that in a bit) isn't close to greatness. The sound design, the graphics, the art direction, the acting, and the level design are all batting at thousand. The survival gameplay was THIS close to perfection, my biggest gripe with the gameplay is how much of the game is slowed to a crawl to find resources. There is an option in the game to make picking up resources automatic but it is unbelievable to me that this isn't default or at least prominently suggested as an option. So that leaves the story. There are stories that only work as games like Bioshock and Undertale, and then there are stories that could work as almost anything like The Last of Us Part 1. The Last of Us Part II is a story that only works as an experience. If you haven't played the first game, I would argue that it is absolutely NOT optional to play Part II without having played Part I. And then once you play the story you are taken through an experience that is almost hard to explain. Unlike other franchises in gaming where they milk these worlds and characters as far as it can, The Last of Us Part II sacrifices its universe in order to take the gamer through an experience no game has ever dared gone before. Judging from the reception this game received, I fear no game will ever dare go again. But I for one, am grateful to have been a part of this experience. Many a gamer will argue that the theme of this game is "Revenge bad! Grrrr," I would implore any gamer who plays this game to not go into this game with that mindset because the theme is a lot deeper than that. Any gamer who's played this game once, I would urge to play it again without such a negative mindset. Its been almost a year and I still think about this game to this day. If you like games with good survival horror mechanics, I would say look no further. If story truly plays an important aspect as to why you play video games, I would also say look no further. However, if your personal expectations for stories plays such an important role in your enjoyment of stories, then I would say that I personally feel you are not ready for this kind of game. This game's story punches you in the gut and dares you to learn to accept. I think this game is historic, its not my favorite game of all time but it will always hold a special place in my heart and I think once all the dust has settled and years have gone by, this game will be beloved. If you have access to this game you owe to yourself to play The Last of Us Part 1 first, and then play this game to experience this storytelling experience that you just flat out won't find in any other medium. This game isn't about shock value, it's about guilt and the realities of not taking what you have for granted. I personally would give this game a 9.5/10, but that wasn't an option and I do think the gameplay annoyance of constant searching for resources, (on top of something else gameplay related but tied to the story that forces you to essentially "do it all again") brings it down just shy of a 10/10. Naughty Dog hits it out of the park with the same emotional intensity of the first game, and manages to do something no other game in my playing history has done: get me actually conflicted about the weight of my actions during gameplay. Naughty Dog hits it out of the park with the same emotional intensity of the first game, and manages to do something no other game in my playing history has done: get me actually conflicted about the weight of my actions during gameplay. The only reason I don't give it a perfect 10 is because the enemy AI is still a bit silly at times (multiple enemies walking into the exact same spot I've melee killed three of their comrades in) and there were definitely times where I felt the game dragged during obvious "scavenging breaks" between action sequences. But ND does a solid job of still incorporating enough dialogue and story into these breaks that they still have a flow to them. Players will be split on some plot points, but I think that those automatically giving a 1 rating based on leaks alone obviously missed the point that the developers were making here. If you've already ruined the game for yourself by reading leaks, that's on you, because you missed out on an incredible experience that lives up to its predecessor. Expand

Frankly, I was a bit skeptical about this game being able to overcome 7 years of building up hype to deliver an experience on par with the first title. But this turned out to be a fantastic game. The game play, style, pacing, combat and mechanics all had great continuity coming from the original and the environment was often nothing short of stunning. Like the first game, it is violent, gritty, intense, heavy on story, and a lot of fun to play. Also, for what it's worth, I didn't encounter a single crash, glitch, or bug.

But, as this is about Joel and Ellie we're talking about, the story is a critical aspect of the experience.

The extremely polarized user reviews is understandable. If somebody hasn't played the first game or been dragged into the depths of the hype they might simply and objectively enjoy the game. However, for those who have spent the last 7 years nurturing deep emotional connections to the characters and theorizing how the story should play out, this game is going to have some tough pills to swallow.

First, the story and character development of this game is very different thematically. While both games are set in dark times with characters making morally gray choices, there are still overriding "warm fuzzy" tones in the first game. The development of a father-daughter like relationship, the building trust between two trauma-hardened characters, and the drivers for their journey are ultimately designed to evoke positive emotional responses. But in Part 2 the theme is much more dark. The story and character progression build on hate and vengeance. The game is designed to make the player uncomfortable and even sad and angry.

Second, the lengths at which the game goes to evoke these emotional responses extends beyond the story and character progression alone and into the sequencing and game play. For example, the game forces the player out of the context of their current progression to play from the perspective of a different character--one the player is not supposed to like very much. I generally hate this tactic (I want to throw the controller every time an Assassin's Creed game sends me into the Animus). But I saw it coming during my play through and I went in with an open mind. And, as designed, I did hate it at first. But I quickly adapted to viewing the world and events through another lens. I ended up enjoying getting more depth to the otherwise peripheral characters, playing with a different style using alternative gear and upgrade paths, and seeing additional post-apocalyptic social perspectives.

But again, the theme of hate and vengeance runs throughout the game, and this additional depth and perspective only adds to the loathe/love dichotomy of the characters and their circumstances. Or, as Ellie might say, "this is F**ked".

I think everything that happened is necessary, even the violence. For me half of it is about revenge and the other about forgiveness. I really liked it, it was a mix of emotions.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was an absolute rollercoaster from beginning to end. Honestly, the only thing that is preventing me from giving this a perfect score is the pacing. There is a point mid game where the perspectives switch and it jars the player out of the immersion that had been established. I feel the game would have functioned better by having the player tackle one day at a time as both Ellie and Abby in order to better establish the similarities these two actually share. The themes about revenge and an overall coming-of-age story really does play well into both character’s stories. Abby was a character that clearly had some walls she had built in order to protect herself and with Lev, he managed to break all of that down. In a way, Abby became Lev’s Joel. Ellie’s character is defined by the very obvious discomfort she shows when she tries to be a badass murderer like Joel was: Nora’s torture in the hospital, Trying and failing to interrogate Mel and Owen in the aquarium (resulting in her killing them in self-defense) and subsequently having a full on anxiety attack upon realizing that Mel was VERY pregnant. Ellie is NOT a murderer. She is empathetic and cannot kill in cold blood without repercussions. She isn’t Joel, as much as she tries to be throughout the story. The fact that Abby showed Ellie mercy TWICE and didn’t kill Dina by the wishes of Lev shows just how much Abby realizes that revenge isn’t always worth it. Her revenge on Joel led to her closest friends being killed. On the path of revenge, you dig two graves. Ellie didn’t learn the lesson of forgiveness until the final conflict with Abby. But the cost of her continuing her revenge, she lost everything upon her return to the farm. Dina and JJ are gone, presumably back to Jackson. Ellie lost the life she built due to her need to avenge Joel’s death.

Another high point in this is Tommy, I believe Tommy embodies that rage that never dies. He was the first to leave after Joel’s death, he didn’t even tell Ellie, who watched him die too and was his surrogate niece. Tommy acted as a catalyst to keep Ellie on her rampage for the sake of avenging Joel. Hell, Tommy nearly died at the theater conflict, but a lucky shot saved him (whether Abby intentionally missed is up for debate). Despite having been okay going back to Jackson that night, he continued trying to track Abby and Lev down. He MOCKED Ellie for wanting to let go and move on. He threw the point of the ending in the player’s face without us even noticing. Naughty Dog really nailed down the themes of forgiveness and the cost of revenge and it’s not often something like that is told in a video game. Again, pacing and establishing Abby’s life as you move through the city only to culminate with the conflict in the theater would have been a cherry on top and given the game the 10/10 for me.

Everybody hates on the story because Joel died, but I thought it made a very compelling motivation for Ellie. My only complaint is that I thought the cult in general was overdone. 20 years into the apocalypse and an entire island of cultists based around a brand new religion happens? It is a stirring experience told from opposing viewpoints where both characters are the hero in their story. The writing and acting is excellent.

There are moments that are extremely difficult to watch but really add to the impact of the games. There were times were I was actually shocked when a character died. I was riveted to the story and completed the game in only a few sittings.

I do still think the first game is the better of the two. TLoU2 had some pacing issues in the middle of it and probably could have been a little shorter without sacrificing much but overall I really enjoyed the game.

The Last of Us Part II takes bold choices and bold leaps when it comes to its characters and story, in order to justify its existence as a sequel. One can argue that the first game never needed a sequel, and this is completely unnecessary, but this sequel expands on ideas of the original to keep things complex and fresh.

The gameplay has greatly improved upon the first, with the addition of multiple new mechanics and enemies, with huge environments that boast beautiful scenery. Some people might be angry with the addition of new characters, but the game uses juxtaposition in its narrative to draw similarities and comparisons between its two main protagonists.

In all honesty, the strength of the plot lies within the player's ability to empathize with the game's characters, and if you as a player decides to go into this without an open mind, then the experience will be nothing but shallow and it will be extremely unrewarding. It's okay not to like the game, but to try not to understand it first and bash it upon completion is not what the game intends for you as a player, and is certainly not the right way to approach it.

My only problem with the game is it's uneven pacing during some parts, but that's mostly due to my play style, and how I took my time exploring every little corner.

Overall, The Last of Us Part II is a worthy sequel to its predecessor in my eyes, and is extremely ambitious in its narrative department, albeit a few pacing issues.

I was going to wait till I had finished to write the review, but I can't wait. I've played through Ellie's 3 days in Seattle and am almost through Abby's Seattle Day 1. As a huge fan of Part 1, I believe this game has made some great improvements and I don't have much to complain about.
Visually this game is absolutely stunning (10 out of 10). The sound and music are also appropriately intense. The sounds of the undead are thoroughly terrifying. I like the larger variety of weapons and upgrades and that you can upgrade to compliment your specific playing style. I like the rope puzzles and didn't feel there were too many of them like some people complained about. I'm a stealth freak (AC is my favorite game series) so I really liked being able to go prone and hide in grass. I didn't mind the jump feature either. People need to remember you're playing as normal people (women at that) in a very normal world not some parkour expert like AC or Prince of Persia. The same goes for the other shooting and fighting mechanics. You're playing as two women (one of whom is tiny), you can't possibly expect her to have the fighting prowess of Kratos. Playing as a person with normal physical abilities adds to the suspense and sense of danger.
I read a lot of complaints about the AI of the NPCs. In most cases I found it to be easier to navigate than Part 1 due to the openness of the environments. I felt I was able to move and hide and complete almost all kills by stealth. It seemed a little too easy sometimes as I felt the other NPCs should have been able to see me at times while I was choking out their friend within a few feet of them. I did like that there were two human factions to face plus the undead, which gave more variety to the game.
I felt there were more jump scares in Part 2, which I'm not a huge fan of. 1. This game is already terrifying and doesn't need more of that and 2. I'm a stealth player and don't like being forced into combat. But, these reasons are both personal to me.
Now regarding the controversial part...the story.....Maybe I'm a cold-hearted robot, but I don't mind the story at all, and am even enjoying playing as Abby. I hadn't read spoilers before I played but I full-well assumed Joel wasn't long for this world (Come on, he's the Obi-wan of this franchise, the "mentor" archetype ALWAYS dies...just like the horse, RIP Starlight). If the story was just a rehashing of Joel and Ellie on some other mission people would have ripped the game apart for being boring and a repeat of Part 1. What the creators did was create a vast world that gets explored by two different characters so you can see many different nuances of this post-apocalyptic world, which I loved. I really liked seeing the Stadium, Jackson and how the different societies were set up.
I keep thinking the people who are so bent out of shape over this story are the same ones who were so bent when Ned Stark died. Give the creators a chance, go with the flow. No person is all good or all bad, they are what they are, its a video game (its not actually a real dog you're killing, chill out). I liked the dialogue and things revealed in side convos and cut scenes. One pivotal moment for me was when Ellie told Jesse that she'd go back with him, which seemed to me she was lying and knew it. She was in too far, past the point of no return. I read a lot of complaints about her doing things that were out of character. It does seem that she should have turned back on her revenge quest long before, especially since she was actually mad at Joel for the choice he made at the end of Part 1. I feel like she's got guilt for being the only one who is immune, she seems to have a lot of emotion she doesn't know how to deal with, she doesn't seem to feel like she belongs...like in the dialogue w/ Dina where she's talking about settling down on a farm, you get a sense that Ellie has too restless of a spirit for that based on her responses. Again, there's a lot of nuance in the side conversations which seems to have been missed by a lot of the reviewers.
The game is extremely tense and emotionally draining. Its an adrenaline suck for sure. It is somber and deep and I can see how its definitely not the game for everyone. This game is not for those who want to play a happy game, this game is here to suck on your life force and it does an excellent job of that and there's nothing wrong with it. The reason I love gaming so much is that you can be immersed into all kinds of different worlds and be made to feel all kinds of emotions.
Overall I'm greatly enjoying the gameplay, the environments, the larger levels, the game mechanics and even the story. I'm taking it as it comes and not getting bent out of shape wishing for a different story.
If you go into this game knowing its not here to make you happy, you might just really enjoy it!

Perhaps they forced the ratial and homosexual topics, i think they've done it for some minorities, but were not necesary. The madness that Ellie have, and the anger she feel towards Abby feels so real, you play an entire game with Joel and she kills he with a club. But later you undestand her motives. The violence of the war between SCARS and WOLFS is simply impressive. And the final enemies with their torture methods are so sadic that I really loved it, this is a history of revenge and its consequences, she lost everyone she loved one time, her major fear was this, being alone, thing Ellie earned with the promises she make and the acts she comitts.
To resume, the best graphics game i've ever played, it didnt betrayed the first game in style, and the fact Ellie lose 2 fingers, so she cannot play the guitar (the unique object she kepts from joel, also his watch) is the pay for all the anger she one time had. 9/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To preface this review/rant; It took me nearly two weeks of processing my feelings to decide where I stood on this game after completing it on June 21st. I would advise anyone reading these reviews to give no weight to reviews left on release date, June 19th. There's simply too much to unpack here, including finishing the game, which took me 23 hours altogether.

Notice how the extremely negative reviews push buzzwords/terms, and don't mention much of anything coherent? It's not a coincidence. These reviews do not elaborate what "plot holes" exist, they do not elaborate on what makes the story poor, in their opinion. The people leaving these reviews are either experiencing grief over the death of Joel, and don't understand how to process it, or are internet trolls/bigots and are a waste of your time. More often than not, people get angry when they don't understand something that they cannot change.

This game pushes the boundaries of what the medium can be, and it will go over the heads and hearts of those with a lack of emotional intelligence and an ability to look deeper than what is on the surface.

I believe that this game is phenomenal, heartbreaking, complex, and challenges the player on an emotional level. While it wasn't the story that I personally wanted, due to an attachment over the characters from the first game, Part II tells a complicated and nuanced story that gets you personally invested from the early hours of playing. It takes away something you care deeply about, and then challenges you to overcome your anger and hatred, tying the player directly into the same struggle that Ellie endures.

The game hits a very hard point halfway through that flips the script and has you play as Abby, the person responsible for your anger and pain. It's not comfortable, at all, but it is necessary for helping the player understand the bigger picture. It mirrors the journey and experiences that Joel had in the first game through Abby's decisions and journey involving Yara and Lev, showing that these characters are much more than just their actions. It shows that both Eliie and Abby and have the same motivations - to seek revenge on those who wronged them.

I believe that most of the hate for this game comes down to Abby killing Joel. Ultimately, if players could accept Joel as an extremely flawed character and justify his actions (remember his decision from the first game to murder dozens of innocent people, including those working on trying to save the world from the cordyceps pandemic? Not to mention his past as a hunter...) to "rescue" Ellie for questionable personal reasons, they must also accept that Abby is just in her actions to avenge her father, the firefly surgeon who was murdered by Joel.

My only critique is that I do feel the game almost had too much on it's plate. While maybe it wouldn't have been practical, I believe the story could have been told better by having players experience more with Abby before Joel's death.

Very well written story. Never have i ever engaged more with a game and felt more emotionally tied to the main characters. I was aware of the leaks so was a bit apprehensive but i went in with an open mind and they have done a really good job with the story as i have grown to really love Abby as well now. Playing it multiple times have led to me seeing encounters i wasn't even aware off, and the foreshadowing for future events is really good. The use of Ellie's Journal for her thoughts is phenominal, especially after she kills Mel and is suffering. She questions her own motives, which is why the ending was fine for me - It was never ever purely about revenge. As heartbreaking as the ending was, I believe it was the nicest thing we could have had for Ellie. She lost so much, I needed an end to all her guilt and that is exactly what we got

Drawbacks i have for it are that I would have preferred a nice balance between the two characters. Abby felt like fight after fight whilst Ellie was story after story. I would have loved to see some more fighting from Ellie's aspect, and some more story telling from Abby's. I wasn't really that emotionally invested in Owen, Mel or Nora so felt unaffected when Abby went back to seek revenge for them. (Maybe thats what N-dog wanted, idk but I would've preferred some more story telling for Abby there (especially with Owen).

Also, there is no MULTIPLAYER. Very gutting. Plus so far there is no prospect for any DLC?!?!?!? I would have loved to see more about their life in Jackson, or some more about what Tommy and Joel got up to.

I would like to have enjoyed to play with Ellie and Dina abit more. Their chemistry was fabulous.

Overall, its a well thought out game. People hating on it for no reason imo and kudos to the ENTIRE naughty dog team. Even though people have mixed reviews about the game, there is no doubt about the hard work you done in making the environment, sounds, and accessibility.

Finished the game last night and wow it was a thrill. First, the graphics are beautiful and stunning. Second, the gameplay is essentially the same as the first, however there are new weapons and skills one can use. Finally, the ever contentious story. Personally I thought they did a wonderful job with it. I cared deeply for Ellie and her story, and I even grew to care for all of the otherFinished the game last night and wow it was a thrill. Characters that I DESPISED at the beginning I began to understand and empathize with as I saw them in a new light. The game manipulates your emotions and makes you feel conflicted during multiple parts. Personally, I am all for this. This is what art is supposed to do. I highly recommend it, despite the backlash this game has received. If you go in with an open mind you should have an entertaining 20-30 hours. Expand

I played it twice because I thought I was just on rage of Joel's death and I was sure damn right. It starts when you want to understand the side that you named as a villain. You realize you actually have similar stories on both size. They both lost their friends and loved ones while looking for revenge. However, Abby was done with that when they had the first fight. She just wanted to take the only one left for her and look for Fireflies. But Ellie was not satisfied without she died, so she went to look for her while believing she owned that to Joel. At the last fight it really started to make me uncomfortable even in the first time I played. I didn't wanted to get revenge on Abby anymore while Ellie was choking her to death. I was disgusted to play the last fight because the game really forced me to get revenge as Ellie and I suddenly hoped for Abby to live. I was so impressed that game made me cry for the one that killed Joel.

It was a very brave storyline, so I get why all these people didn't like the game. I'll not even going to talk about the graphics, sounds, animations, details and other stuff. It is one of the best games for that.
But I have to admit, there were some parts that I said "Was this really necessary" or "Why". And I really enjoyed the last part with Joel more than a lot of the game especially when he said "If somehow the lord gave me a second chance at that moment, I would do it all over again".

It was really a great game, again, I get why people are angry and upset, but it was one of the best ways to thrill the player which sure worked on me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After an extremely rocky-road to release, filled with delays, leaks, bad-press, and hate (ironically enough), the last of us part 2 has finally been released and i have just completed it today at 1 AM in the morning. I can thankfully say it was worth the wait. [limk omitted per site rules]
The Last of Us Part 2 starts off with Joel informing Tommy about what exactly transpired at the end of part 1. Which as a we know, was a divisive and not easy decision to make. Does he lose another “daughter,” this time for the greater good, or does he put his self-interest above a world that is already too far deep into the **** To me, both choices would’ve been understandable. But one ends up having mass consequences.

At the beginning of the last of us part 2, ellie and joel’s relationship is strained and you can feel the tension evident in the wonderfully performed cut scenes with some of the most advanced motion capture technology to date, also accompanied by another fantastic soundtrack from Gustavo Santaolla. .

The game introduces you to the world of the last of us part 2 through a lengthy tutorial-like, opening chapter. Where Ellie goes on a peaceful patrol with her love interest Dina, taking out a few infected and clickers in the typical last of us style gameplay. In this sequence, while the gameplay, isn’t the most exciting (yet), we are re-introduced to the extremely detailed environments and world-building that we’d expect from naughty dog. In this game though, they really go above and beyond what they’ve done in the past, rivaling, or even surpassing rockstar in this aspect. Naughty as well even throughs in a few easter-eggs that many of us will at least chuckle at, or have a smile on our face.

Unfortunately, this smile on our face is quickly turned upsidedown when we are introduced to Abby and friends, who are on a haunt to fulfill a mission of revenge, even playing as her throughout this opening sequence. If you saw the spoilers like me, you knew exactly what this was going to escalate into.

Abby ultimately crosses into this horde of infected, which starts off one of the many extremely tense set pieces in the last of us part 2, accompanied by a heart-pulsing soundtrack also from Mr. Robot’s Mac Quayle. I honestly can’t emphasize enough how incredible the combat music is for this game. You can really feel the tension and sweaty palms. Abby, is fortunately saved by our very own, fan-favorite Joel, and then Uncle Tommy who are also out on patrol at this time. This portion of the game is honestly the only major gripe i have with the writing and execution. Tommy, amidst the snow-storm and infected horde, tells Abby his and Joel’s name. Joel and Tommy ultimately agree to shamelessly seek refuge from the dangerous horde, and terrible snowstorm, at Abby’s place, unaware of the fate that awaits. While this is happening, Ellie and Dina are having one of the many intimate moments of the game, only to be disrupted by Jesse, who informs them of Tommy and Joel’s absence. I could unfortunately only want to punch my wall at this moment due to just how stupidly Joel dies. At the time of me experiencing his death in the game, I was angry. Both at the game and at myself for buying into this lazy written game. This whole sequence I felt was extremely rushed and he died too early, the execution could’ve been better.

Thankfully enough, the game is only uphill from this point on, both in terms of gameplay, and writing. Ellie and Dina arrive in Seattle after Tommy, and we are immediately re-introduced to what we love about Naughty Dog games. The Seattle area features a linear-world similar to Uncharted The Lost Legacy. It features many side objectives, with an exploration into optional areas that pay off. This is accompanied by very tender and quirky dialogue moments between Ellie and Dina, extremely layered and detailed stores and environments, satisfying combat that now features a nicely refined gameplay system that includes a dodge and jump button that helps separate ellie from joel’s gameplay in the first game. Allowing her to be extremely stealth like a snake, or to get to areas out of reach in hopes for supplies, cute cards filled with easter-eggs, safes, or notes that fill in the gaps between the ongoing past and present battles in Seattle that include WLF, FEDRA, and the seraphites. A lot of them even include extremely interesting stories about personal experiences in the world, such as the story of Boris and his friends. The story of Boris and his friends is one of the many extremely layered optional side collectibles that you will not regret reading into.

It seems that Metacritic has a limit.

All in all, it's a 9/10 game, few weird pacing moments, but everything else it's a very memorable and special experience won't be forgotten for a while. I can only feel it'll be loved as time goes on.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
