Great game. If you loved the first game, and hate this game, you should really take a look and think why. The main reasons many are upset, is the game doesn't go how they want, and you play women who do not quite match society norms. People who have reviewed the game who did not even play it through, especially those who did not play it at all have been unfair to it, and their reviews should be removed.

Maybe you just didn't like it for valid reasons, but that's the minority from what I've seen.

If you played it all and did not like it, you are entitled to your opinion, but those who have, and loved the first game, should consider that they may be taking a suck because people die instead of always magically surviving in a horrible harsh world, or just intolerant, sexist, and/or a keyboard warrior. The little details in this game make it great. They took some big risks in having you play a character who is a somewhat masculine woman. Good on Naughty Dog for challenging society norms. Things like armpit stubble on one of the female characters (who would actually be shaving regularly in this world?). One argument people use is "the game is too violent". Again, that is valid if you didn't play or like the first one. If you did, that's a horrible argument, it's very similar to the first game, where Joel murders tons of people, including innocent firefly's and essentially dooms the world for one girl. He just committed a planet to doom! I loved Joel but that is about the worst crime you could commit! The revenge against him was valid, but the cycle continued until both Abby and Ellie ended it. I will admit, there are times I did not like playing Abby. She is my enemy of course ! But you play on knowing there is a reason.

Just finished the game last night, and it was good, satisfying, and makes you think, just like the first game. Leaves the door open for more. Hope they do a part 3 once the keyboard warriors simmer down. They could wrap it up with a mission to find someone who could carry on the firefly work and make a cure, perhaps work it in that Abby's survival leads to finding this person, and cure due to Ellie's act of mercy (returning the favor from Abby).

I gave the first game 10/10, I give this one 9/10. I did miss Joel too, but as the game goes on, you realize he deserved what he got. If you put yourself in Abby's shoes, Ellie would have done the same thing as her!

    Slam dunk for Naughty Dog!

I try to be honest.. but I hated the fact that joel got killed so early. The Game is flutted with tragedy and offers no connection to other characters.... The trailers were false advertising, and i feel like a wreck after finishing the game... A game should always make fun, otherwise you have no reason to play it again (AS A SINGLEPLAYER GAME) Thanks Neil, now i suffer from depression.

A good plot (think of the characters not as simple heroes-villains, but as individuals), memorable characters, but not so many changes in the gameplay compared to the previous part.

It took me around 27 hours to complete, and it was an emotionel rollercoster, forcing me to do stuff I didnt want to do, but also had some of the best cinematics, that left me wanting more, being almost disapointed, when i had to control the character again, because i wanted more story.

I would have loved some more open world areas, and Im dissapointed that there was a map introduced, but you only used it for such a small section of the game.

Graphics, animations, acting and everything was just amazing.
I cant wait to replay this sometime in the future on the PS5.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought the story was great- I think the characters act as they would have before and as such won't discuss that in this review. This is exactly what I personally wanted from tlou2. I enjoyed the introduction of new characters and liked following someone outside of Ellie and Joel's bubble, who had a wildly divergent background and perspective. Dina, Jesse, Yara and Lev, in particular, were charming and I wanted to see more of all of them. I empathised with Abby a lot and while I wasn't personally invested in her love triangle with Owen and Mel, I did like the protective role she took over Lev. To me, it felt reminiscent of early Ellie and Joel interactions and I liked it a lot. Their interactions made me laugh- Lev was pretty dry and I liked it. Abby's arc allowed for a thorough exploration of Seattle and the war between the two cults that controlled it which is removed from Ellie, which some clearly disliked but I enjoyed it- it felt meaningful and interesting, from the teachings of "the prophet" and the "sky bridges" to the resurgence of the Fireflies. I loved the character designs for all of the characters and the world design was outstanding, as to be expected of Naughty Dog.

My only issue was zombie continuity- I wished there were more zombie variants, for example, I wished that Santa Barbara and Jackson had a different zombie variant similar to Seattle's Shamblers. I felt disappointment seeing a shambler in California after the characters theorised their formation was due to the wet climate- climatic mutations would be believable after 24 years of the cordyceps existing in the world. Also, only one in-game character model existed for the shamblers and bloaters. Hitting two shamblers with a mine would make them both fall to the ground, perfectly synchronised, completely breaking immersion. The Rat King was a very cool concept, but unfortunately not very grounded in reality which might be to some people's tastes but not to mine.

Play never gets too deep, as the game is primarily cinematic and wants you to progress without excessive difficulty or complication. Story beats represent the game's reward and compel you to continue the adventure.

The graphical quality and technical skill at work are admirable and noticeable nearly constantly. It's clear the team making this game chose to prioritize small moments to reward players with technical beauty and some of the best (painstaking) attention to animation detail. While elements like gameplay and story are somewhat subjective, it's clear that exceptional technical skill made this game possible on PS4.

People who played the first game feel like the narrative of its sequel is too forced, doesn't match the characters, and doesn't include characters they enjoyed the first time around. I would suggest that--if you are only interested in this game for the plot--to watch someone else play the game or just read the synopsis. This sequel does require you to know the general plot of the first. There are enough hints in the introduction to get you up to speed, but the rest of the story will feel a bit like reading someone else's yearbook.

Simply put, if you enjoy shooting/combat and puzzle-type gameplay, pretty graphics, and a dramatic-for-the-sake-of-being-dramatic plot, you've got yourself a great game to spend time on.

There were parts that felt a little long and I just wanted to get to the next plot point, but looking back I do appreciate the frustration you feel with all the roadblocks that get in the way because it makes me feel the desperation of the characters even more. The whole experience and story reminded me of the feelings and emotions I felt in the vengeance trilogy by South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook. But just like those movies the dark story in The Last Of Us Part 2 isn't for everyone. This will be a game that will stick with me for a long time and I would definitely recommend it. Expand

I finished the game yesterday and i'm so glad I approached it the way I did. I'm generally a casual gamer. I play most games for the story and, to me, a great game is one that leaves you feeling like you don't know what else to do with your life after finishing it. The way you put down the controller as the credits roll and you don't want to do anything else but pick it back up and play it again because I just can't handle the feeling of the journey being over, the dreadful feeling of having to come back to reality and live my actual life. That was certainly a feeling that The Last of Us Pt. 2 gave to me. I thought that everything about story, the characters, the pacing, the way two different stories converged into a heartbreaking climax was all just wonderful. The combat hadn't changed a whole lot from the first game but, if it ain't broke don't fix it. There were some small changes but, I thought that all of them were positive changes. The game is graphically fantastic and there are some really beautiful and really beautifully dark locations. If you've read this far you know that some people have had a problem with some of the narrative and the themes of the story but, we are all different people and, i'm here to give my personal opinion. I've never posted a review on a game like this in my whole life and, after having the experience I did playing this game, I feel hurt to see people trash it. Hopefully reading this review will help someone out there have the same kind of awesome experience that I had playing this game. Expand

You can clearly see how much love went into making this game because of all the little details like for example the physik of the ropes (they interact with the arms and the guns of the character) or the snow which melts from the blood of the enemies and so on. I really enjoyed playing this game. There are so many cutscenes and dialogues which are just optional and the stories told from the papers lying around are just as awsome as in part 1. The combination of stealth, gunfighting and discovering also really made the experience great and never boring. I also really apreciated the story. I loved it that there wasn't even a real stereotypical villain who is just evil because he is evil. The perspective of Abby also made sense. I don't understand why people are just hating Abby, even though she lost more than Ellie. She lost all of her friends and her dad, while Ellie "just" lost Joel. Expand

Gameplay was pretty good, not great by today’s standards, but good enough. The stealth was fantastic though it’s too easy unless on hard difficulty. Story was a roller coaster of emotional reactions...REAL emotions. When Ellie finds the guitar in the farm house and sings one of my favorite songs (I still get chills whenever I hear that song)...

The ending (no spoilers) left a bad taste in my mouth, but I think that was the point. Final battles felt like I was being tortured with a golf club.... I was somewhat disappointed by the ending when it was over but in retrospect it was the only way it could have ended and still have been an effective story. This was one of the best and worst gaming experiences of my life.... I don’t think I will ever replay it but I don’t think I want to. This was a work of art, truly brilliant. If you left a negative review and didn’t finish or even play the game it’s very obvious to those of us who gave the game a fair shot and played it through.

This is a very hard review to write - there are parts of the story I adored beyond words, and there are parts that I hated to the point of very nearly putting down my controller and walking away. And yet... I'm so very glad I never did.

Without spoiling anything, it's safe to say that there were some pretty extreme narrative risks taken in this production. Even having reached the end, it left me not satisfied, not happy - but rather, sad, confused, empty. I spent days pouring over the experience, trying to untangle the mess of emotions I was feeling (yes, still, days later) - and over time grew to accept, then grudgingly admire, then downright cherish the experience I've just played (lived) through.

It's not a 10/10. There are some frustrating bits even outside of narrative, and while I did enjoy the story overall, I can't help but think that something could've been done to pace it better. And good grief I would've killed for an actual choice towards the very end... But this is largely nitpicking.

Final verdict: I don't regret a single dollar, nor a single hour, I've spent on this game. It made me feel like **** but only because it wanted me to - never unintentionally. It's certainly a game that will challenge you not so much as a player, but as a human - and I while I appreciate that, not everyone will. Yet in my eyes, the biggest testimony to its achievement is the hole it's left behind. What other game could possibly measure up at this point?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tbh you could right a whole godamn analysis essay on this game because of how many little details and parts you need to do more then just understand on the surface. This game is so worth the money and was the first ever game I preordered. So many bad reviews you see on the internet all come from dumb people who saw the leaks and rated the game based on it. I want to address the things that people picked out to hate on. 1.Joels death:
People were mad that their beloved character from the first game was brutally murdered and said that he should have died a “heroes death”. One thing we need to remember is that JOEL was NEVER A HEROE, he murdered all the good people, the actual “heroes” who were trying to make a cure!!! And story wise it just wouldn’t have been as compelling if it had been another character that made ellie set out on her quest for revenge. If you pay attention to what Joel says before Abby beats him, you know that he knew this day was bound to come after all the bad things he’s done. 2. Feminism being “shoved down people’s throats”: I really don’t know what to say to people who had this opinion. Of course everyone’s allowed to have their own opinion but WTF people. I’ve been around the internet reading reviews and watching them. What I’ve found that people who complained about this were all straight white males. Here is me summarizing the comments people have made:
    A. Why do you need a lesbian. Why are they shoving this down our throats B. Same as above for trans people
    C. omg CAN I JSUT POINT OUT ALL THE MALE CHARCATERS DIE , someone needs to point it out!!!!!!

Here’s what I have to say:
These people do exist in our society, so they’re not shoving anything down your throats. This is called representing minorities. This IS NOT A POLITICAL AGENDA. Apparently MAKING S FEMALE CHARCATER WHO are BUILT MUSCULARLY IS ALSO MAKING A POLITICAL STATEMENT. The game even explains WHY SHE TRAINED HERSELF TO BE THE WAY SHE IS. BUT NO ONE PAYED ATTENTION BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO BUSY HATING ON HER. In conclusion, because this game doesn’t follow the conventional video game characters aka white men bashing **** it gets hate. And it’s just disgusting that people would go so far as to send death threats to Neil druckman because they didn’t get what they wanted. That’s just **** childish. I had to get that little rant out of the way but now I will talk about what I loved about the game. 1.Graphics and gameplay
I found myself constantly amazed with the graphics and the gameplay. I would even make my family members watch me play for 5 seconds so they could see how realistic everything looked. You can tel so much hard work was put into making everything. The scenery was fantastic and the gameplay was definitely an upgrade from the first game. They worked similarly but small things like being able to go prone, hide in grass and even perform and jump kill made the experience so much more enjoyable because it pushed the stealth element even more!! God my favorite thing is Playing the game again because the better and more familiar you get with the game the more fun it is creeping around and killing your enemies quietly. That was a 10/10 for me. 2.Story
I didn’t give this game a 10/10 because of the story. However this was not because you had to play as Abby. Ithought that playing as Abby added so much more to the game. I remember hating her so much when I first started playing as her , I even considered not playing. But the more you played as her, the more you find the parallels between her and Ellie. At the end When ellie set out to kill Abby the second time, I found myself saying that I didn’t want her to die. We were put in her shoes and we realized what motivated her, what made her happy and what made her sad. So I grew to love her as a person, her character growth was something that made me feel warm, especially when she said that Lev was her person. However, the game was a little dragged on mainly because of the closer look we had of the conflict between the WLF and the seraphites. I found that it didn’t really enhance the story or the main characters much. The whole part where lev returned to find his mom felt unnecessary and while fun to play, really distracted me from the main story. That said the game also strayed a little from survival horror and became a lot liek an action adventure. I remembered saying to myself out loud a lot “is this UNCHARTED??!” So for me the story was like a 8/10

Overall, I really loved the game even though some parts were hard to sit through. I really don’t think you should judge this game before playing it yourself. This game really takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions and when you finish the game you might just like me feel a completely different feeling from when you began. Give it a shot and I promise you won’t regret it.

He was flawed like all of us and capable of making selfish decisions when the world needed selflessness. He was so believable that he became a father figure to all players. The second game was so unbelievably good in terms of gameplay, story, characters, etc. I didn’t feel like I was playing a game in a fictional world but watching a movie of what humans are capable of in regards to love and hate. It made me question our sense of good versus evil and how both can be misconstructed as the righteous path. While I agree with others that it was hard to find Abby’s character likable, I thought her story was the perfect opportunity in showcasing your enemies weaknesses and strengths and how it shapes a person. In that way, I understood her character better and who Ellie was going up against. My only critic is the Santa Barbra chapter that felt out of place (the Rattlers felt like a rushed plotline) and a reason to bring the characters back together again. Overall I commend Naughty Dog for taking a risk and making a game that I don’t believe was overall focused on revenge but understanding how love can make us do terrible things. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hello all,
Last of us is a unique game and without equivalent today.
Last of Us can speak to the hearts of the men and women who play it.
Last of us is a game that questions you and exposes you
Will I make the same choice as Elijah?
Will I go so far in violence and hatred for revenge?
Can we just accept everything because this world is cruel and merciless to anyone?

I do not have the answer to these questions but in any case I asked myself. And that is, for me, the real success of this game: Transcending the video game to directly reach the emotions of the player.

Let's talk technical: The game is the most beautiful of its generation currently.
And more particularly the animations. They are impressive in truth and intensity. I invite you to bring your attention to the faces and hands of the characters, The detail provided is stunning, you can feel each emotion of the characters in the expression of their gaze.

The expression of Elijah when she kills an enemy or gives a blow, when she looks in the mirror, when she speaks with other characters, all these details allow to fully appreciate the care and work performed on this game.

The sound environment is a central element of the game as was that of the 1 ... It is sometimes discreet and sober, we simply hear the wind and nothing else and sometimes it plays the role of heartbeat of the game. play with our nerves.

The gameplay is mastered, it is version 2.0 of the gameplay of last of us 1 and does the job completely. Let's talk about the angry subject: The scenario.

For me the scenario is good because the message is coherent and it brings a real questioning, it takes us out of our comfort zone and it tries to disturb the player in his certainties.

To fully understand the script, you have to understand the double narration put in place by Neil Druckmann.
We talk about hatred, revenge in a cruel and merciless world, where anyone can lose their life at the bend of an alley and without any form of greatness, just cold and brutal death.

And we (the player), we must accompany a character in the worst side of humanity because in the end, who is good or bad in this type of world?
The concern of the scenario is the rhythm which is given to it.

The second act is, in my opinion, "heavy" because the element of surprise has disappeared.
Nevertheless, it allows you to discover a character that you want to appreciate despite the atrocities of which she is capable.

And the genius of this game is there, the paradox of characters full of hatred and cruelty for those who set out on their way but who are ready to give their lives to protect their friends, their families.

And the game pushes us to enter the minds of these characters, even if it means getting lost.

For the various concerns related to the rhythm and the backups (oh if this automatic backup is replayed !!), I put the note of 9/10. This is my reason note.

For all the emotion that this game gave me and all the pleasure I had to find Elie, Joël and new faces, I put a note from the heart: 20/20.

Now, I would like to raise a problem: the review bombing.

Last of us Part 2 unfairly suffered a negative review bombing on metacritic

We have the right to hate a game, we have the right to resent it because it has disappointed us but we cannot harm a game for the wrong reasons… and it's the wrong reasons everyone knows them: Trolls without much human value have expressed their hatred against LGBT communities.

As a reminder, the game contains kissing scenes between Elie and Dina and in the world of last of us you can see flags and lgbt tags.

All this "LGBT" content combined, this represents 5 min… 5 MIN OVER 30 HOURS OF GAME !!

I'm tired of seeing our society governed by trolls, homophobes, racists ... They are invading video games.

As a passionate player, I cannot tolerate that we dirty the work of a studio, that we destroy the message of a work and that we obscure the theme of a game just because of mediocrity… I make you a solemn request: Play Last of Us Part 2 while being invested and let yourself be transported / MAKE YOUR OWN OPINION! Don't listen to these review bombing idiots Do not watch the streams of this game, it deserves to be experienced and not just seen! Do not listen to specialized sites that all put 20/20! Don't listen to me !! Listen to your playful soul and experience Elie, Joël and Abby and tell us REALLY what you felt. Here and on metacritic and wherever you can, don't let mediocrity decide for you.

    Dont understand the negative reviews.
The gameplay combat-stealth arena loop got in the way of the story once or twice, other than that i was completely blown away by presentation and story. It's fun, yet depressing.

The game made me feel really tense physically a couple of times and that's honestly amazing. Stories that actually wanna say something are more important now than ever and I want to commend the ambition of everyone involved in this project. I hope we get many more like this. The dislike for it leaves me wondering if people ever understood part 1, and i hope that projects of similar scope get a chance despite the reaction of a lot of "gamers". Im also going to mention that having PoC characters and trans characters in your game is a good thing and if the inclusion of people from diverse backgrounds is a reason for your disliking the game your opinion is invalid. People are indeed different. Before i close i want to briefly mention the acting, which is once again excellent, like it was in part 1. Play the last of us 2, you will not be disappointed. Expand

Gone are the formulaic yet entertaining stories as seen with the Uncharted series; no, in this sequel we get to explore the stages of grief one goes through when encountered with a tragic loss, and the effects they have on themselves and their loved ones.

    Brief Description:

Ellie’s story in The Last of Us 2 is one of grueling pain, suffering, and ultimately revenge. As her journey progresses, her insatiable lust for revenge grows stronger, throwing away her humanity with each life she takes. We’re also introduced to the character Abby, whose journey echoes Ellie’s. Both characters have experienced a lot in this unforgiving world, and ultimately it’s up to the player to figure out the right and wrong of the actions made by the two, if this is even possible. The moral ambiguity presented in this story makes it difficult to root for a hero, but this is the way Naughty Dog challenges you to view it, and form your own opinions about the story they told. Story:

While I enjoyed the 25 hours I put into this game , I did a couple issues which prevented me from giving it a higher score. The story on paper is very interesting, however translating it to a game can be difficult. While I appreciate the parallels the game made with flashbacks for both Ellie and Abby; the execution and timing interrupted the flow of the narrative. The pacing of the game as a whole suffered due to the inclusion of the scenes, albeit they were necessary to flesh out the characters and revisit old relationships. Gameplay/Visuals: The gameplay was very much similar to the original game; however, it’s clear that the developers took the time to perfect this gameplay loop and make it as enjoyable as possible. Visually the game is stunning, and running on my old PS4 still manages to hold a constant and smooth 30 FPS. No issues to be had here. In addition, the fan noise produced by my OG PS4 was not as bad as I initially had thought it would be. Much quieter when compared to other taxing games such as God of War, and AC Odyssey. It’s worth noting that I had cleaned my PS4 recently, and replaced the thermal paste (may have helped somewhat).

    Wrapping Up:

Overall, this game does a lot of things right. If you go into it with an open mind, a decent understanding of empathy and other basic human emotions, you’re in store for a masterful piece of storytelling.

This short review is without spoilers. If you have played the game, then you know it is controversial for obvious reasons and I can understand why some people dislike it (they should however give proper arguments).

In my opinion, the story was great, however certain decisions of characters as well as storytelling was questionable at some points. It could have been better, but it definitely wasn't bad. I absolutely love character development and interactions in the game. The game is full of emotions and you will feel them too. It's really strange, because I have never felt such a wide range of emotions while playing a game. I felt anger, sadness, pity, nostalgia and very rarely even joy. Very rarely. That's the difference between the first game and the sequel. TLOU part 2 is a very tough game to swallow and when I finished it, I actually felt quite depressed (not because it was bad :) but quite the opposite).

The graphics are great, really love that post-apocalyptic style and TLOU captures that perfectly, although some areas look graphically a bit worse than other areas, it's not a big deal. When it comes to gameplay, I think the sequel is better in every way. I also loved the sound effects and soundtrack, but I feel like the original TLOU had more memorable soundtrack. During my playthrough I encountered a few bugs, nothing game-braking though. I enjoyed the otion of 'crafting' your own difficulty, as the game allows you to change difficulty in 5 different areas of gameplay. I found enemy combat to be one of the best, ever. The combat is dynamic and fluid, but also allows you to use different tactics. I especially enjoyed certain enemy types, such as dogs or the enemy group known as Scars, who can surround you and ambush you. Sometimes however, I should have definitely been seen by the enemy AI (the same applies for allies). What I personally didn't like was pacing. Sometimes it felt like stuff were a bit repetitive or the story did not advance much, other times there was one big thing after another.

To sum it all up, I think the game is great, the first game was a masterpiece and part 2 definitely has something to it, that makes the game memorable. It is brutal and emotional. And even though you might not like the story, you can't deny the game's many qualities.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a MUST play video game, it is technically perfect, visually stunning, the sound was breathtaking, music just right, and one of the best stories I have ever played.

Yes, this is not the popular opinion, and yes, the game is very polarizing, but yourself a favor and just play the game and build your own opinion as to if you're trying to decide if you want to get the game based on user reviews do it based on those that have substance and actual arguments, most of the ones that say the story is trash or bad written can't actually make any solid argument other than I was forced to play as Abby, or they dishonored the original game story and characters.

So now to not mimic all those reviews I am going to tell you why the story is a masterpiece, obviously, I can't do that without spoilers, so if you don't want spoilers this is the time to turn away.

I'm going to start with the fact (yes it is a fact and not an opinion) that not everything you don't like is trash, you're entitled to enjoy what you do regardless of what the majority of the audience says and there are masterpieces out there of every kind that you're not obligated to like. being that said this game has a plot about revenge, however, the story goes about breaking the violence spiral, you lose everything if you do not, and both main characters are about that.

If you watch Abby's story without knowing the events of TLoU Part 1 or are objective enough to see her side of the story on her shoes, you would realize that at the moment of meeting Joel and actually killing him, Abby was at the same place you as a player and Ellie as a character was at the time Ellie decides that she must kill every last one of them, that makes Abby's character about as rich as Ellie's and is masterfully done.

The death of Joel was a catalyst and such a strong driver for the story, it makes Ellie embark on this quest and finally save Ellie, who's lost everything, Joel, Jackson Group, Dina and even the last 2 things that connected her to her parent figures, her mom's knife at the beach in the fight with Abby and in the same fight the ability to play the guitar which was her last connection to Joel, but she regains her humanity which makes Joel's death worth it and not be for nothing.

There have been claims of false advertising, which, personally, I believe is overblown - as they had to alter specific content to protect those who did not ruin the story for themselves.

Anyway, the story is harrowing, brutal, enlightening and admittedly taxing at times. It holds up a mirror to your ego, emotional impulses and objectivity. ‘At first I thought this was a game about hate, then I realised it is about love and hope’ Neil Druckmann. Throughout the violence, brutality and sacrifice - can you hold on to those you love, the person you are and control your irrationally - fighting to hold on, instead of giving in to your hateful destructive quest for ‘justice’. Hate can lose you more than letting go. There is a price for forgiveness, but is it a bigger one than revenge? That’s for you to decide.

It's a pretty brilliant, but sometimes unfocused game. It's not a flawless game, but the highs are absurdly high.

Right off the bat, some of the issues are in the pacing and the way Naughty Dog sets up the game. There's a reason the pacing is done the way it is, but there are drawbacks to it. Similarly on the gameplay, we're all used to the stealth/survival gameplay loop and the game does it well, but it actually plays even better as an action game. If you play on NG+, make your loot settings easy and go to town. It's a fantastic action game, and most players will never experience it that way because of the default setup Naughty Dog encourages through tutorials and difficulty settings. So those are flaws.

Technically, it's probably the best game ever produced. Graphics, sound and accessibility are at the top of its class. This is why you should immediately disregard anyone calling it a 0/10, and probably even stuff like a 2/10. It's a masterpiece in those areas, and the gameplay is actually pretty fantastic.

Where there's a lot of dispute is the story, but what I'm really seeing a lot of is people being unwilling or unable to read below a single level deep. A lot of idiots are repeating "rEvEngE iS bAd" as a criticism of the game, but it's really not a story about revenge. If you read The Great Gatsby in high school and understood that is more than a melodrama about rich people, you should be able to figure it out. Forgiveness is the critical component of the game, and for Ellie it's largely about forgiving herself and those closest to her.

At its heart, the story is about the grieving process. Every single flashback cut scene reinforces the idea I'm talking about. Pay attention to, and think about why ND chose those scenes and what the purpose was. The rest of the game's story will come to you.

And you may have heard a lot about how depressing the game is, and it probably will leave you sad or melancholy. But all is not lost in the end, and the people who say that are missing what's going on. Ellie has to live with herself, first and foremost, and she had difficulty doing that even before the events of this game. By the time you get to the false ending, she's incapable of doing that so the idea of ending the game there would basically doom Ellie as a character. She goes on the final leg of her journey which I think was a bit too long (there's definitely some fat that could've been cut out), and learns to live with herself in the end. Materially, she may be broke. But spiritually, she's more complete than she has ever been before.

That should be a hopeful message to everyone, even as you go through **** times.

Some people argue that the game failed to make them empathize with one of the characters and that's a fine complaint. I disagree, but I get particular enjoyment about of books and movies that ask me to stretch my level of empathy. Others don't, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. But I have to imagine, even those people aren't the ones rating it a 0/10 or probably even below a 5.

The people giving those types of sub-5 reviews are entitled children. They're able to regurgitate a list of 15 different nitpicks and there's no use in trying to dispute them because they're not interested in a discussion on the game. The first game has all of the same issues (for example, the plot armor is even more extreme in the first game) but they don't even entertain those ideas because they're not receptive to new ideas. These people are better off left alone, until they make it out of their arrested development.

As I mentioned, there are perfectly fair reasons to not think the game is a 9/10 like I did. But the range of sincere reviews should be something like 6-10. The people posting 5 and below are insincere.

The narrative is plenty easy to follow, it's not riddled with plotholes, and it's both incredibly thought provoking and moving. If you're complaining that the flashbacks are too much to keep up with, maybe stick to third grade reading level media. Everybody wanted a happy go lucky fan service filler episode, but that's not what this series does, and nothing we've seen before should make us think that. The characters deal with the consequences of their actions. The parallels between our two main characters are impressively executed, and I love the story they told. The ending undoubtedly left me feeling sad, but that's because it's a sad story. They succeeded in telling the story they set out to tell. This doesn't mean that I don't wish there was more of the game to play, even after 25 hours. Expand

The thing I've seen most from critics who give this a 1/10 is that a certain character dies too early, but that doesn't even register in the overall picture of what this game has to offer and shows that these people were either too shook to understand the story that follows, or never bothered to play it in the first place. And no, watching your favorite streamer play through TLOU2 is NOT a substitute for doing it yourself, you weirdo.

The negative review scores reflect the general gaming populace's unwillingness to turn their brains on when engaging with stories. These people cry from the top of their lungs that video games are art, and then step all over and scream at a true masterpiece when it stares them in the face.

Not a full 10 out of 10 because...well, I can't really put into words wise. This game is truly amazing, and a must buy, but few games are perfect. For example, this game lacks multiplayer unlike it's predecessor. Also, the pacing suffers slightly towards the beginning of the halfway point of the game. The story telling is disjointed, and while it works incredibly well on the first playthrough, I'm not looking forward to playing it through a second time. A chronological mission setting would be a brilliant addition for a second playthrough.

The Last of Us Part II is a triumph, and will be remembered for years to come as being one of the most exciting and controversial games of a console generation. The Last of Us Part II ushered in the era of serious narrative based story telling at the end of the PS3 era, and it's not lost its touch in the slightest. Right at the very end of the PS4 it swoops in and reminds all the wannabe's who is boss. Buy it, play it, love it, let yourself cry and feel and empathise with those you hate. It'll be worth it, I promise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 has been a roller coaster of emotions and reviews for fans and gamers alike. Some people have praised the game, giving it a 10/10 while on the other hand, people have been giving it a 5/10 or lower. They say it is SJW propaganda and “go woke go broke.” Here is my official review of the game and what I thought of it. Off the bat, I will say it is an 8.6/10. Though that may be subject to change once I play the game again. I do believe that this is more about losing things/loss and some revenge too.
Let’s address the elephant in the room here. The story. Tons and tons of people say that the story sucks. I have to disagree with that. While at some points in the story it can be a little sucky (as when you first play Abby or near the end when Tommy is just very very crazy). Or the pacing may suck. The switching of day 3 from Ellie to Abby was kinda hard. It would probably be better if it was day 1 then day 1. This game also has its high moments. One of these moments is when Ellie is visiting Joel’s grave. You can feel all of Ellies’ sadness swelling within her. You could tell she is just filled with sadness at that very moment. The painstakingly slow walking away from the grave and Dina being with you there doesn’t help. Or once you’re being shot at and you have so many places to run your heart is just beating fast once Ellie is running. Or when she’s hiding trying to heal herself once you’re “safe.” You have to take chances in spilt moments. Or lastly once Abby sees the “Rat King”. The fear that fills you is terrifying. Just hearing that thing on you as you try to kill it.
The scenery and world-building is just fantastic. You get so engrossed by it. You sometimes feel like you’re in that moment. When you’re riding Shimmer with Dina going through downtown Seattle or grungy boat moments with Ellie getting ever so closer to Owen. The pouring rain and harshness fills you with regret and somewhat of fear? But the sunny and carefree time of horse riding lifts your spirits. So much detail just went into the world-building. The crunching of snow and rustle of tall grass once you go prone is so nice.
The gameplay is definitely better than the first game. The dodge button makes you feel like you’re actually dodging in real life. Sometimes I would find myself dodging along with Ellie. The crafting system is definitely way better. It just fits more with this game. Working at the workbench and seeing all the guns and upgrades is very nice. Though there so have been more attacking at the workbenches. It feels great just to upgrade your guns. Having more supplements and skills trees was something that felt strange but so refreshing. Having to go out of your way to find the skill trees and supplements just felt so nice once you finally got it. Climbing up ropes was fun but it didn’t happen too often.
Second, to last I want to talk about the characters. While they did make some likable characters like Jesse, Own, and Abby. They did make some characters dislikeable like Dina and Ellie at the beginning. They made Ellie way too edgy at the start. I just didn’t really like Dina to be honest. At the end, they messed up Tommy. I understand that Joel was his brother but they made him way too crazy at the end. The characters kinda improved as there was more but also in some ways didn’t improve.
Lastly, the end. The ending is something that will grow on others (like me), be an instant hit, or just not like it at all. Let’s get this out of the way, the game is about loss and some of revenge. You start to realize that even if you kill all these people Ellie won’t get Joel back. She has PTSD and is “stuck” with it. She wants to get revenge but in the end, she lost fingers, Joel, and Dina. That flashback was to show Ellie that Joel is just Joel. Joel was just him at that moment. Ellie most likely could see Joel and her relationship on Abby and Lev. She knew that killing Abby wouldn’t solve anything. She would just keep the cycle of violence that happens so so much in The Last of Us universe. You may feel anger first at for not killing Abby but you may grow to like it. Abby also can’t get back her father or her friends back. And even her first love. But yet she has Lev and maybe they could rebuild something there. Ellie playing the guitar that Joel gave her represents her trying to move on. She doesn’t want to be stuck in the past. Ellie feels regret for killing Mel and beating Nora. Ellie hates herself for not forgiving Joel until it was too late. Letting Abby live shows that Ellie can forgive herself. Abby feels regret for killing Joel as well. She thought she could feel better by killing Joel. She hates what she did because she ripped away what Ellie had with Joel just like how Joel ripped away what Abby had with her father.
My final thoughts are that this game is a masterpiece but there are some things that could change. (Rushed limit here)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finally- A sequel that lives up to its hype.

Fans have been waiting for a sequel to Naughty Dog's poignant story about two people's quest for survival for quite some time now. The Last of Us received massive critical acclaim and won several awards for its story and gameplay.
To many (myself included) it felt like a standalone masterpiece since it was wrapped up so neatly. Lots of people disliked the idea of a sequel to this game and with good reason- sequels are often huge letdowns simply because they get crushed under the heavy expectations on top of them. But this game not only lives up to its predecessor but also outperforms it.

The Last of Us 2 starts with a major character death that immediately raises the tension. Playing a game in which major characters are killed off like flies creates a sense of apprehension throughout it. This, along with the vibe of the cutthroat world Ellie is living in, creates a bleak and anxious atmosphere that keeps you on your toes the whole time.
Right after the death, the game takes us down on a path of vengeance. Ellie's character development is complex and we slowly start seeing a different Ellie- a much darker and violent Ellie who stops at nothing to get revenge.
Enter Abby. She is first introduced to players in a way that- let's just say won't make her very appealing Then we get to play her character and it's essentially the same story in the same city but with a different perspective. Her character arch is much more complex than Ellie's. Almost all the actions committed during Ellie's arch are "revisited" through Abby and that's one of the ways TLOU really screws with your mind. So much so, that towards the end you might just find yourself rooting for Abby instead of the girl we've known since Part 1. The game gives us a complex commentary on the cycles of violence and vengeance through two opposing perspectives.

The gameplay itself has evolved considerably since the Last of Us 1. New elements such as the rope and dogs spice up interactions. When played in hard mode, the game gives you just enough resources to get by and so you are left with the task of being the architect of the encounters. All the encounters feel smooth and Naughty Dog has gone out of its way to add nuance to everything- every NPC is given a name which adds a layer of complexity to what is essentially a "to-kill"
character. Encounters are challenging and rewarding. The graphics are extremely beautiful and careful observation reveals the amount of detail invested into making the environment.

The things that disappoint in the game are parts of the beginning. The reason I did not give this a 10 is that the start makes no sense. We open the story in a utopia inside a dystopia. Suddenly a main character dies? Suddenly we're in Seattle to kill those responsible? And an almost teenage girl agrees to company her girlfriend on a deathwish mission? It was very tough to get on board with the story in the beginning. The story could have started much better. Explaining the intricacies of Joel and Ellie's story through flashbacks would have helped explain Ellie's decision. Spending some time in Jackson with Ellie and Dina might have helped get us acquainted with their relationship. So in my opinion, the story's chronology and depth could have been handled better in the beginning.

The story eventually picks up and immerses us into two psychologically-taxing and opposing perspectives. The flawless graphics and gameplay complement the story and pull us into an experience that's really an avant-garde work of art in the modern video game industry. Kudos to Naughty Dog for doing right by the Last of Us franchise!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved this game and I think all the hate from it stems from the fact that people were unable to approach this game with an open mind and they shut down once Joel died. Joel was not a great man, he's done a lot of **** up **** in the first game (torture in the Winter chapter, saving Ellie and essentially dooming humanity) and before the first game (he said he was a Hunter at one point).

The game looks and plays incredibly well, but I want to use this to talk about the story, which it seems most people have an issue with.

Killing Joel is a great way to kick off the story and get Ellie moving. It made me mad when Joel died and, like Ellie, I was ready to go and get some revenge. I found that Dina made for a good partner, she balances Ellie's recklessness well and provides caring and contrast to Ellie's sheer determination and bloodthirsty focus. Alternately, Jessie shared Ellie's desire for revenge and willing to kill, but unlike Ellie, he has clear lines on how far he is willing to go and doesn't hesitate to separate himself from her when he feels she's going too far. When I was playing as Ellie, I felt determined to go hunt the WLF and murder Abby.

So, when the gameplay switched and I started playing as Abby at the zoo, I felt a little hesitant, but also curious. Upon learning WHY she went to kill Joel, I felt a much deeper understanding of her. When I saw the time turn back to Seattle Day 1 as Abby and I realized I was going to have to do three days as Abby, I'll admit, I felt like the momentum of the story had been utterly halted, and I was a little upset to have to (in a sense) "restart". However, I put the feelings aside, kept an open mind, and started to work my way through it. I very quickly started to see what Naughty Dog was doing, which is something they didn't do in Part 1. They were humanizing all sides of the story: Ellie, Abby, the WLF, and the Seraphites. In Part 1, you had horse blinders on and were focused just on Ellie and Joel and what Ellie and Joel were doing and how Ellie and Joel felt, which is fine, but what they did in Part 2 made for a very interesting experience. I came to enjoy playing as Abby and when I came back to the aquarium on Day 3 and saw Owen dead on the floor, I was ready to kill Ellie. The fight between the two of them was intense for me and I wanted Ellie to die, but also wanted Abby to die. Regardless of what would have happened, I felt like it was going to be justified.

When time skipped ahead and saw Ellie with Dina on their farmhouse, it filled me with a sense of joy that Ellie finally had a calm life. However, when she had her panic attack in the barn, that was the part of the game that made me cry (the game had previously made me very emotional and teary-eyed, but no tears falling). I felt so bad for her that despite her seemingly peaceful life, she was filled with so much conflict still. When she packs her bag and leaves Dina and I saw that there was STILL more to the game, I felt a massive sense of dread and a desire for it to just end. I had grown attached to both characters and I didn't want either of them to get hurt. It felt like being on a rollercoaster that stops and starts to slowly roll backward, which was a feeling that I don't think a video game has given me before.

I loved playing in Santa Barbara, that sort of dry environment hadn't been shown in either Part 1 or Part 2, and it looked beautiful. By the time Ellie reaches Abby, both of them are beaten to hell and back and when Ellie fights Abby, it feels like she's doing it not because she still wants to, but there's a part of her that feels like she has to. She looks exhausted. She stops because she has that flashback of Joel, her last conversation with him, where she says she doesn't know if she'll be able to forgive him, but she'd like to try. I think part of her desire to kill Abby stems from the fact that she never got to forgive Joel, and if she can't forgive Joel, maybe she can forgive Abby. When she returns home, she finds her home empty, Dana and JJ are gone, no note. She finds her guitar and tries to play it, but cannot, due to her lack of fingers.

The reason I give this a 9 and not a 10 is because a part of me wishes the game would have ended here (or after she sets down the guitar and walks out of the room after a few moments of stillness) and the flashback would have come while she was fighting Abby instead of after she plays guitar. Maybe that would have been too direct though. I just love the face she makes when she stops playing guitar. She realizes that in her pursuit to get justice, Jessie died, Tommy has a limp and lost an eye, Dana and JJ left her, and now she can't even play guitar, her last tie to Joel. She makes a face that is rich with realizing that she lost more than she gained and wonders if it was worth it in the first place.

Marvelous! The game really went above what I was expecting. Gameplay and storyline really got me.

The game is not by all means perfect, but almost. The problem for me isn't the gameplay, directions, or the story (which in my opinion all are solid). But the scavenging for supplies get a little bit tedious (yet addicting?) in my 28 hours of total gameplay.

Totally recommended you try it before give any judgement. Please, please, please, understand what The Last of Us world is about

I personally loved it and I read all the spoilers I think if I didn’t know what was going to happen I’d give it a 10/10 it makes you go through so many emotions and I can’t think of many games that have that much power over emotions, awesome gameplay and graphics. Story is awesome in my opinion but I can see why others hate it. I’m Getting Ellie’s tattoo soon

But also recognize that this cycle of violence as the director calls it is dangerous and painful, and watching that pain brought the tears from my eyes in ways that until now, I thought only movies or other art expressions could achieve, this game also pushes the graphics in a way that makes the first game look way behind, it’s delightful to see the green in the plants and also watch the infected with more detail, a fact that makes them look grotesque particularly one new type of infected which I have to say caused me a total shock to watch, a true abomination. The parallelisms made by the studio with some of the present situations in our society is something that can’t be overlooked, even in these post-apocalyptic world there still exists intolerance and the labels to those who are “different” although is certainly pleasing to see how some stand against it, this game for me, made me look and review the word empathy in a way that I never thought possible, if we consider that it is putting yourself in the shoes of the other, believe me, this games does it, good or bad are just labels in a world where each one of us are mirrors, and the pursuit of justice takes a new scope in this game. In a nutshell, you have to play this game, I believe I’m not exaggerating when I say this game truly proves that video games have the capacity to be works of art but more importantly, they provoke emotions both pleasant and unpleasant. I don’t know where all the hate for this game is coming from. Gameplay and graphics are some of the best I’ve seen. I know the problem people have is the story, but I think it’s fantastic. It provides this perspective that only hearing one side of the story doesn’t always mean something is right. Yes some of the side characters could have been a bit better, but you still get attached to them, even with the characters you don’t want to feel attached to. It’s not a perfect game, but I sank many hours into it and had a blast playing! Would highly recommend to anyone Expand

One of my favourite games to date. Incredibly nuanced storytelling. Don't start the game with expectations, allow Naughty Dog to take you on this heartbreaking journey they've created.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
