This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

A bleak and sometimes shocking game, would not recommend to people sensitive to fairly graphic violence, violence against animals or scenes of torture. An emotional -if sometimes predictable- plot, the true shine of the story are the characters and their interactions. A fairly more character driven narrative than the first. Expand

It is a game that touches reality and teaches you that revenge destroys you and everyone around you. Those who wanted a happy story tell you that this is not a Disney story (most are angry that they killed someone special and gave their opinion ahead of time) and that shows that the work is well done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I totally understand all the negative reviews for this game. It is NOT for everyone. To be totally honest I enjoyed (not necessarily loved) every Second of the experience TLOU2 brings. It is a heavy, complicated and strangely designed (in terms of plot) masterpiece. That been said, I enjoyed part 2 for totally different reasons compared to part one. The amount of care and craftsmanship invested in this game is unmatched on every level. There is NOTHING, not a game, series or movie managed to steer all these different emotions at one sitting. Life is not black and white, and non of the characters was portrayed as such. That ending though ...... ouch ...... ouch. Why!!!!! Ok Naughty Dog, you told your story. I loved it. Now I hate you For loving it. Make part 3, you still have lots to say to tie all of this together. Good luck doing that under all the pressure from these overwhelmingly negative reviews but o will definitely love it if you finish telling your story. Thanks for all the love and efforts that showed in every small detail in this masterpiece. Expand

If you're having Problems with the Story, you're the problem.
    Abby is NOT the problem.

But a big lack of empathy is whats wrong with today's society.
So it was kind of predictable. And Naughty Dog probably knew that.

This game is beautiful. It's amazing.
It's far from being perfect (In terms of game-play and length), but it's an amazing ride.

Expand

I feel many are hung up on Joel's demise and while that scene was tragic, and could've been handled better, all of the other aspects of the game were flawless. I personally love the dynamics of combat, and (while playing on hard) found survival to be a great challenge. I'm well aware that the ending is very debatable, I found TLOU2 to slightly edge out it's predecessor just because of the content and length of story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU2 presents a storyline very different but yet extremely similiar to the first game, the game has gotten alot of hate because of ABBY the person who killed joel (main character in a horrific way, people have the problem of being way too soft, this game is unlike any other game ive ever played, the game has so many emotions entitled to it, the game has become so incredibly realistic not in the graphics, but in character behavior and emotion, it shows the frustration of the characters it shows a type of format wich goes with two sides of two characters, 1 evil, 1 good, but as you go on it shows tje humanity and the similarities between the characters, alot of reviewers and fans wanted a game filled with happiness of where u see joel and ellie roaming the USA in such a progressive and fun chill way, but yet aggressive, in TLOU2 its depressibg, the game shows such great writing that it really shows the lack of quality of games these days, in the entire decade only 4 games have stood out to be the best, TLOU, GOW, RDR2 and TLOU2, this game shows such emotion that its hard to believe that this is a video game, the atmosphere, the graphics
the infinite ways to approach a situation, the AI is incredibly unpredictable wich gives you this alive type of feeling, the combat is incredibly realistic showing a real punch, not an incredible jab evrey time u press the pucnh button, the blood that comes out of your enemies that u just slaughtered feels like you actually killed someone, the game is so good i felt like i was in the game, i forgot i was even playing sometimes, so many reviewers keep saying this game is good for some people wich it is, for quality reviewist, it dosent feel like a bland game like i anticipated it would be, its incredibly well written, the game shows real and depressing emotions wich ive never seen before ecxept in the first game, there are numerous flaws but they are minor, the jump button had potential, the puzzles werent good but they werent bad either (ropes felt clonky), the gun play was a pretty normal, it was functional, it flet like a teen was holding the gun, some of the time frames werent coordinated and felt very idiotic but they werent terrible, and some of the characters get introduced 5 hours after you kill them with a pipe, wich feels just lazy but not terrible still, they couldve added a special move where u press 4 different buttons one after another to make a cool kick or something like that, the games hate comes from the main character dying and that you have to play as his killer, unlike other people i had an opened mind even though i fell in love with joel in first game ( ive played TLOU1 about 29 times just because it was so good and im already starting a new walkthrough on the 2nd game) people arent very appreciative of abby and dont try to understand why she did it, hopefully more people give it a second try and realise how good it is, and try to enjoy the game from a more easy and open perspective instead of crying because joel died, it feels like alot of the critics didnt even play the game, i can go on and on defending the game while u could just give it a 2nd try like we did with the 1st game, my rating is a 9.3 it dosent deserve the 0.7 because of the easily fixable flaws.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A stunning game. Visually and mechanics-wise it improves upon everything the first game did right. The attention to detail, atmosphere, artwork, are all spot-on, 10/10. Storytelling-wise, 9/10. The way Naughty Dog did it was bold and unusual, and I dare to say revolutionary. In TLOU 2, the story is stripped of narrational perspective: the thing that makes the heroes get out of a pinch, makes you sympathize with your hero and his ideals. In other words, the plot is indiferent to the two sides of the story: Ellie and Abby. It doesnt favour one or the other. What you get when employing this is a true journey of self-reflection. You can't hold on to anything or anyone, you can't just take the side the story takes because there isn't one. That's the way this game got me feeling. I couldn't hold on to Joel. I couldn't bear to see Ellie hurt, but I couldn't hold on to her either. I could empathize with Abby to some extent, but I couldn't condone her actions and couldn't hold on to her. Everything about this game was heartbreak and despair. The game accomplishes this lack of narrational perspective almost perfectly, but I feel like the Abby side need more reenforcement. We have to have in mind that Ellie was a character with a lot of history and emotional value. She was, therefore, at an advantage. That's where I feel the game failed. The two sides of the story are supposed to be equal, but Abby, because of her narrational disadvantage and lack of internal insight ( by internal insight I mean the "peep" at a person's mind, like Ellie's journal entries), feels too much like a side character. This is, for me, the reason many, while empathyzing with her, didn't care for her enough for that empathy to feel real and meaningful. This is the main reason I give the game a 9.
Now, I can't make a review of this game without addressing Joel's death. At first, I was dumbfounded. On the earliest hours of the game, they killed our dear The Last of Us hero in the most horrible way possible. I thought it was merely for shock value, but it wasn't. You see, the narrative had a problem. How can the game portray the broken relationship between Ellie and Joel? How can you truly have a sense of the tragic, the despair, the hopelesness that they feel? So they kill Joel. They make it even more tragic. Because now they didn't even have the chance to try and fix what they broke. And the storytelling that they got in exchange for Joel's death was breath-taking. They don't tell you the whole thing together. They tell you pieces of it. Flashbacks. Memories. Journal Entried. Photos. And that's the truth about loss. That's all you got of your relationship. And because Joel is dead, you cherish those moments and little things much more intensily, like Ellie does too. So even though I was very sad that Joel died and to this day it sometimes comes back to me, I think it was very very well done. Hats off to Naughty Dog to doing a very risky thing work wonderfully.
This game was loss and injustice portrayed beautifully well. But maybe it wasn't just that. I like to think that, at the end, when Ellie utterly lost everything and everyone, she also found what she was looking for. And that's a very special thing, for game with such a desolating ending, to leave a somewhat uplifting taste in your mouth.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 in my opinion is a fantastic game. It has gotten a lot of unnecessary hate because of story events that the majority of people don’t like. People are praising Joel for what he’s done while in reality he’s caused the most deaths by not letting the Fireflies make the cure. His death from the hands of WLF is harsh but justified in their world. We play as Abby and Ellie in the game and people say it does nothing because they don’t like Abby. However, the Abby’s side of the story did so much and put into perspective that both sides of this fight view themselves as the good guys (Ellie trying to avenge Joel’s death and Abby avenging her dads and countless other deaths because of Joel). Also, another complaint that I’ve seen from people is that Abby doesn’t die in the end. However, this ending shows the growth of Ellie the most. While she’s drowning Abby, she flashes back to a scene where Ellie and Joel talking about what happened in the ending of tlou 1. At the end of this scene, Ellie says that she will forgive Joel for what he did and she realizes while drowning Abby that she has to do the same for her. For the gameplay, it’s not as bad as people say it is. The stealth aspect is some of my favorite and gun play feels authentic. Level design does feel off as it blocks you off with small foliage (bushes, branches, etc) but that’s not enough to make me hate the gameplay. Overall, I think the game is fantastic and is receiving a lot of unnecessary hate due to two events that are very good once they’re understood. Expand

Sound. The sound design, and especially the voice acting, is top notch, which brings me to my next pro. Performances. This is without a doubt the best acting and animation I have ever seen in a video game. It's actually mind blowing at times how much you can get from a character without them even saying anything. Game play. Think tlou1, but with small improvements to every single element. Everything just feels more fluid and satisfying, but if you did not like the game play of the first game, then you probably won't enjoy the second either, as it's very similar. Story. Don't worry I'll be vague. Ooook, so here is the big one that is dividing the fanbase. First, this game is very long for a linear story game, almost twice the length of the first, but this is a plus in my eyes. It feels like a huge, emotional journey, and I still can not stop thinking about it, which I think says a lot. However, the story is not as airtight and perfect as the first game, there are more flaws. As far as content goes, just strictly speaking about what actually happens, I loved it. BUT... I feel like the pacing and structure of the story had some major issues. Which brings me to-

Cons. Story pacing and structure. Naughty dog made some really bold and risky decisions with the story, which I personally was very much on board with. There is a roughly 10 hour section of the game that some people either hated altogether or felt was too long. I disagree. I think this section, as well as the length of it, is absolutely necessary for the story to work. My problem with it is the TIMING. The way the story is structured, the timing of when this segment occurs completely destroys the momentum that had been building up, and I really wish it simply happened earlier in the overall story. I actually think that a decent amount of people that hated the story would've liked it, if the structure and timing of events was moved around a bit. There are also a lot of flashbacks, and while some of them are perfectly placed and incredibly touching, others seem to come out of nowhere and don't quite land emotionally. Aaaannnd those are really my only cons with the game. Story content: excellent. Story pacing and structure : messy. I also have one minor con with the game play: scrounging for materials starts to feel tedious by the second half of the game. The first game also had this issue, but it was less noticeable due to the shorter length. Conclusion: story-8.5 gameplay-9 overall experience (not an average) 9/10 For some context, I would rate tlou1 story-9.5 gameplay-8 Thanks for reading my review!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright where to begin. The last of us part 2 is a great game. hear me out first. i absolutely loved the first game when i finished i immediately began another play through. the story and characters were so well done and it is a near perfect game. this is how i see the games. The first last of us had okay gameplay, it wasn't bad whatsoever i actually really enjoy it but it was nothing special while the story was perfect and i loved it so much i cant wait to see the HBO show. The last of us part 2 has amazing graphics, gameplay, bosses, chase scenes everything. the game is so immersive and brutal enemies cry out for their friends and lives. but where this game drops is the story. People absolutely hate the story and i completely get why. its a mess and sometimes theres just a bit too much political nonsense. but for me it doesn't ruin the experience completely. people are out here giving the game a zero which is absolutely far fetched and undeserving. a zero means it has nothing good at all and you even though you hate the story you cant just ignore the visuals, acting, and gameplay. its very unfair. now going deeper into the story. i will admit, i was furious when i saw that i had to play as abby for half the game. i hated her for what she did to joel and wanted her dead. but as you keep playing you learn he motives. think about it. Ellie and abby are on the exact same story. someone killed their father figure and they want revenge. why is abby the bad guy here? yes, i still hate abby for killing joel but the story humanizes everyone and develops them in a good way. people are also mad about the ending. i can see why but people need to look into it more. this whole story is a violent revenge story. Joel kills abbys dad, abby kills joel, ellie kills owen and mel, abby kills jesse, just a whole circle of violence. had ellie killed abby at the end, Last of us part 3 probably wouldve been about lev getting revenge on ellie. She said she could never forgive joel for what he did but she could try, so why not abby? In the first game joel made a selfish choice and the one person he cares about deeply hates him. In part 2 Ellie makes a selfish choice and loses everything. It all comes full circle. i loved the game, story and gameplay, but i completely understand why people are mad and upset at the game, but i think its all for the wrong reasons and it is getting undeserved 0’s. Would recommend the game to people, but its not for everyone. Expand

Now for my rant. **** these dumb ass losers who are so whining about a supposed “SJW” narrative that in no way is present. I think if anything Neil ****ed up by portraying a strong woman as a man and should get backlash by women instead of these **** ass dudes that are so but hurt because they couldn’t play as Joel? Get the **** over it!!! Loss is a part of life, and it’s the reason the journey even happens. Play the game don’t listen to these morons. It's okay to be uncomfortable with different situations and storylines, but if you can get past your preconceived notions of characters, i think you will see a very deep and emotional story that makes you think.

Also, I must note that the story length is fantastic. You get plenty of game time for the price you pay.

The Last of Us 2 is a technical marvel. Smooth controls, many ways to dispatch your enemies and gorgeous settings. I really like the huge boss fight under the hospital. Best fight in the series. I do agree that the story was lacking in clarity. I think the sequences should have been placed differently to provide more background to the story in smoother transitions. -1 for that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of people are descrediting what the game tried to achieve based on one thing and one thing only. And that's how I felt in the beginning too. When I got to the part where they killed Joel off, I wanted to smash my new TLOU2 themed controller. Turned off my console immediatly as I was pissed off as to why they would kill off one of the best characters so unceremoniously. I also kept thinking that walking into a trap like that was totally out of character for Joel.
But then I turned my PS4Pro back on, and started to play from there. By the time I got to Abby's part, I was like don't **** make me play as this **** Then I spent another 12 or so hours as Abby and got to know Yara and Levi. My point of view shifted from black and white to grey, as it does most of the time in real life too when I judge something too quick.
By the time I was approaching the end I started to sneak way more around entire enemies and avoid all the meaningless killings, as I had enough of that. And surely, by the time I finally reached the beach, and confronted a worn down Abby, as I was pressing square everytime it came up, I kept thinking, give us a choice damn it, don't make us kill anymore people in this game. This is what this game does to you. I came around full circle. It truly is one of the best games of this generation, be it story-wise or gameplay wise.

The story is good, but it also tries a much much bigger scope than the first game's story, so it's not as solid. But it does is job, it's compelling, and pays off. Play with an open mind.

I believe that Neil Druckman should have made Abby story into a mini game for finishing the Main story.
It could have been a bonus game story to play, if the player want too.
By taking out Abby from the main game. The game would have not felt, so long and dragging.

For example: When you finish the main campaign, and the title screen tell you "You can replay the game with game Plus blah...blah..." a second message pop up. Also, for finishing the main campaign you now unlock "Abby story". This way the player can choose to play Abby story till the End.

I also feel the ending should have 2 ending. One giving you the choose to kill Abby, and a Second choose to let Abby go. I feel that Abby has suffer enough by the end of the game for killing Joel.

If you kill Abby in the end of the main story, on Abby story she dies, if you let her go on Abby Story she lives.

I love Ellie’s character and although she makes some poor decisions through the game the lovable person you took across America in the first game still shines through, he dynamic with Dina is wonderful.

Playing as Abby is actually enjoyable no matter how much I though I'd hate her, aside from "The Fight with Ellie". Really the only 2 things I feel could have made this game better is 1. if there was a factions mode released with the game because I love how satisfying the kills are and 2. If they would have given Abby a better character model, she could have been prettier and a little less manly and this would without a doubt be a 10/10 i wont knock a point off for Abby being so ugly lol But because it doesnt have a MP mode ill dock a point since it released with the first game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game really took me on a emotional rollercoaster. With the death of Joel I was immediately in rage mode. I literally paused the game for like 30min and I wanted Abby dead. Through the whole game playing as Ellie that was all on my mind and I didn't care to kill anyone. The game really makes you feel this as it shows flask backs with Joel and Ellie (real tough) and kinda made me more upset. But through the journey you take a lot of lives and you can see it starts to way on Ellie and it did for me as well. The game take you through killing majority of the crew that killed Joel until you end up killing Abby's lover and and the woman bearing his child and her. This takes a big toll on Ellie. Through all of this Ellie isn't the only at risk. She puts her lover Dina and close friend Jesse. Dina is actually pregnant and I believe this is why it was so hard on Ellie knowing she killed someone that was pregnant like Dina. The story doesn't end there; it then makes you play as Abby. OMG at first this pissed me off. Personally I let her die a lot on purpose but as her story was revealed it was just sad for both her and Ellie. Abby is the daughter to one of the fire fly doctors that Joel killed at the end of the first game that also wanted revenge. Overall this story is great and not in the way I anticipated at all. This isn't perfect and sometimes the enemy AI is clueless or extra hard for example the clickers would still react towards me being to close though they can't see. Unless there's something I don't know I don't understand that part. Gameplay is still what the last of us is supposed to be but I wish the stealth would've been better or more options. This was a great representation of the cycle of hate and revenge and a long story at that. And I'm glad I got to experience it with avoiding spoilers.85/100 Expand

Starkly different from Part I, yet just as bold. Expand

The gameplay from the first game is polished to perfection. The story deals with fleshed out characters dealing with the morality of their actions, facing their consequences and most importantly, forgiveness. Naughty Dog subverted expectations from what the story fans wrote in their heads and delivered on something personal for the
    Developers.

The game adds to the first game by adding additional movements, weapons, and minor tweaks. The only reason I can't give it a higher score is the constant fights get to be monotonous. Some parts felt way too drawn out. The first game moved at a nice pace, and this game is a much slower pace that gets a little frustrating at times.

As far as the twists and turns the game took, I enjoyed and hated them. I didn't like seeing Ellie as the bad guy or Abbey as someone I empathized with and actually felt was more "mature" in the game. There sometimes is no happy ending, and The Last of Us Part 2 didn't give us one. It gave a great insight into forgiveness, love, bleakness, and the failures of being human.

I can only imagine people are upset by Ellie's sexual orientation, the death of Joel, or the characterization of Ellie in the game. Who cares if she is a lesbian. Absolutely non-issue for this game or any game. I think everyone is bent over Joel dying early on and Ellie is no longer a helpless child, but a vengeful adult.

The game is extremely violent and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It was uncomfortable in a few parts and I was constantly wanting to make different decisions contrary to Ellie's decisions. I didn't feel I needed to do that with Abbey.

Overall, a really great game and it will stand up as one of the best on the Playstation 4 or any game this generation.

Why are you all waiting for some kind of game in your head?
All I knew about the game was what was shown in the first trailer and I didn't try to figure out what would be in the game. And on this I got colossal impressions, I am absolutely satisfied.

Because what Naughty Dog did with this game was stepping up the show.

A movie's script can be well written, acting quality and actors may fit the part, characters can be well shaped and a movie can be philosophical, dark or may have a pleasing happy ending,
LoUII in my point of view is like a movie that intentionally doesn't want to have a positive conclusion and want you to feel uncomfortable on having a way of thinking that see the world in black and white.

In this sense i think that this game is not for everyone and can't be liked by everyone because expectations had to be adjusted on the story leitmotif and they couldn't, mostly given the popularity of the first game.

So for the people giving very low review i humbly ask them to consider that there are movies that fits a pizza with friends, movies that fits when you're with your loved ones and other that are best seen alone and in a reflective mood.
I think that Last of Us part II is the latter.

I think also that this game fits very well the Martin Scorsese discussion shared on the New York Times (https://nyti.ms/2CORqkR) about Marvel movies and the fact that is a pity that many artists "don't want" or are not in the best condition to take big risks on creativity and possibility to wander on how to make a piece of art, because video game like the one of the LoU are getting more and more like a movie.

I fear that giving so many bad reviews could in some way affect, going forward, companies like Naughty Dog to be more incline to not to take risks or bold choice in favor of the more safe path.

For this reason, in my opinion, even if you give the story 1 or zero this game is still a title that doesn't deserve to be bashed hard with a total rating of zero.

    My rating:
    Sound 8/10
    Graphic 10/10 (https://bit.ly/2NyBCVq)
    Gameplay 9/10
    Replay value 8/10
    Story 9/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the TLOU and this game took me on a rollercoaster. I hated how they killed Joel so early and I didn’t get a chance to play as him at all. I also really hated how I was forced to play Abby. But as the game went on I got the story and it was compelling. The Abby parts were actually fun because she had awesome weapons. In the end I was actually hoping the two could some how reconcile. But I commend naughty dog for being able to show both sides of a story and genuinely make you care for both sides. For what it’s worth I think those who complain about the story on how they forced you to like Abby are the type of people who always complain without providing any alternatives. Naughty dog had a story it wanted to tell and it required us to like the bad guy. Not only like the bad guy but like the bad guy who killed a beloved character we spent the majority of the previous game playing as. It’s a mountain for them to climb and I don’t know how else they could have achieved this. I still don’t really like Abby. But I get her side. People are rarely the villain in their own story. Expand

First 1/3rd was amazing. Couldn't leave the game because I was so wrapped up in the storyline. 2nd third became slightly monotonous but was important for character development. Third third of the game was edge of the seat storyline again. Couldn't wait to see how it finished and wrapped it all off.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. IGNORE THE POOR RATINGS. This game has an an amazing story amazing gameplay and all around a great game. Some reviews I’ve seen have been pathetic. A 0 for Joel dying, a 0 for Ellie being gay and saying it it doesn’t belong in the game ? Pretty strange considering it was made clear within the first game that she was gay. Joel dying in the game made the whole story actually important. It wasn’t a disregard for a beloved character as people claim. Joel died because of his actions within the hospital in the first game and saying that it was pointless people just clearly don’t understand the story. This game shows how bad the fan base for the last of us actually is. This game is phenomenal but because the so called “fans” are annoyed at the tiny little things in the game then give it a 0 rating. How about give reviews properly so the company can improve upon. This game story “isn’t all over the place” as people are saying, it makes sense. There are flashbacks through the game showing interactions between Ellie and Joel in the 4 year gap and at the half way point then switch over to Abby made complete sense, it makes you see the different side to her and why she hunted down Joel. Let talk about the ending. The ending was great and made complete sense l. Ellie obviously realised if she ends up killing Abby then the cycle will just start again. Abby killed Joel for killing her farther for Ellie to kill Abby for killing Joel would make her no better than Abby. Lev, was sat in the boat watching this happen helplessly much like how Ellie watched the Joel death. By Ellie letting Abby go this breaks the vicious cycle and for me I thought it was a brilliant end to a brilliant story. People need to get over the little things in this game that they’re giving 0 ratings for and play the game. Maybe they’ll actually enjoy it and The Last of Us 2 May get the reviews it deserves. The $60 spent on this game were certainly worth it with 30 hours, some very fun, and some a bit depressing moments. it made me feel a myriad of emotions, which is already more than a great number of games that truly deserve a sub 5/10 rating are able to deliver. I loved the new characters, which surprised me. I both loved and was frustrated by Ellie. I loved the ride we went on with her spiral into vengeance and hurt when I thought she wasn't going to be able to pull herself out of it. This game is about so much: forgiveness of self, of others, the knowledge that sometimes some things are unforgivable but maybe you have to try anyway, revenge, grief, fear, sacrifice--amazing writing. I really hated going back to play as Abby. Take me back to Ellie!!! Then started to like it. Then really enjoyed it by the end. Lev is the best ever. Ground zero made me almost wet my pants. I just....look, I read a review after I finished that said this isn't the game fans wanted, and I can definitely get behind that sentiment. But then it goes on to say it's still a f*cking good game, and it really, really is. Gameplay is a lot of fun, graphics are great. Some new elements to fights were a great time. As in the first game, I just adored the collectibles, the notes left around, the little background stories we get to see bits of. Ellie's journal was such a nice touch. Especially at her judging a teens journal in the first game from someone from before the outbreak for only worrying about clothes and if a boy likes her, then she's all "does she like me??" in hers. Nice little touches there.
Dropped a point for me personally as some things were off with story pacing, some things rushed that I felt needed more time and other things given too much time that felt it could do without. It would have been nice to see some more little "open world" play elements like the first part started with, to break up what after that was the pattern of fight, slip through crack in wall, fight, slide down muddy path, fight.

This game was amazing. I'll replay at some point, but for now my heart hurts. Incredible work, ND.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
