Middle part was too long and took me out of the experience.. kind of like rdr2 which made me play Marston. I think the point could have been made a lot faster and most of the Owen flashbacks didnt add much to the plot. Didnt need as long to be able to understand why ellie made the right choice in the end. Ending was very satisfying and hopefully part 3 will continue with a more mature ellie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a nuanced masterpiece. The story isn't as airtight as the first part but it pushes the boundaries of the videogame medium. That is why, like Death Stranding did with gameplay, this story doesn't cater to the prestablished conception of what a narrative should be. Graphics are amazing. Sound can go from chilling to soothing. Seriously, this is a must. Expand

Just because they killed Joel? he needed to die, because he **** up the humanity, just for 1 life, so I'm ok with his dead, it was heartbreaking? yeah it was, it was a roller coaster of emotions, this game won't make you laugh,it will make u suffer, because this is a vengeance. I'll give a 9 because the history sometimes fells pushed, and you don't make a "click" on some characters but otherwise that, the game is perfect. I hope there's a Part 3 ,they have a pretty good character like Abby and her travel to find the fireflies. Expand

I just finished the game and I thought it was excellent. I enjoyed the bleak story and the settings, graphics, sounds, the acting, dialogue and action were all first-rate. It's one of the few games that I'm likely to play again a second time although with the size of the game I feel like I more than got my money's worth.

My main frustration was just that for some areas midway through the game the rules had changed from what I'd learnt in the earlier parts meaning I missed collectables or spent a long time trying to get into a room that was not possible at that point.

Looking back I can't believe how many memorable environments and situations there were. It's a great game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Non Spoiler Review: If you enjoyed the last of us 1, then you would probably enjoy this game too. The graphics are amazing, the soundtrack is phenomenal, and the gameplay is an continuation of the first game. I would recommend playing on Survivor since I feel you can get the full experience of surviving the land of the last of us on this difficulty. I would say lower difficulty made the game significantly less fun. The scavenging is limited in survivor, the enemies AI are more random and unpredictable. Once they see you, they hit hard. Most of the time overwhelming you or one-shoting you. There are bosses in this game that are extremely fun, makes me want to replay for those bosses alone (again on Survivor difficulty). For the non-spoiler review of the story, it reminded me a lot of the Last of Us 1 story in a lot of ways. Last of us 1 and the Last of us 2 can both be described as tragic stories. You will see a lot of things that will make you uncomfortable but its there to tell a story about Ellie. In the end, I was emotionally invested, and felt the same as I did in the end of The Last of Us 1. I would give both games 9/10s

    SPOILERS
The story elements reminded me a lot of the original last of us 1. Joel original goal was to get Ellie to the fireflies to be the cure for humanity but took Ellie away so he wouldn't have to experience the death of another child. In Last of us 2, Ellie's original goal was to murder the people who murdered Joel. In the end, she forgives Abby for what she did and lets her go.

Both games had a goal only to be turned over. The controversy of the ending again reminds me of the Last of Us 1. Many people were confused and upset for what Joel did. Now, its Last of Us 2 time to experience the same backlash. Some people call the Last of us 2 pointless but the Last of Us 1 was a pointless tale too. Joel was delivering the last hope for humanity but decided to keep her so he can have a daughter again.

The Last of us 2 is tragic story. It shows how damaging selfishness can be and how important forgiveness is. Throughout the story, Ellie was losing everyone around her. Her actions led to the destruction of her relationship with Dina, the death of Jessie, the injuries on Tommy, and her losing her ability to play the guitar (in some aspect, ill come back to it. ). On the final battle, She got the upper hand on Abby but ultimately decided not to kill her as Ellie gets a memory of her last moment with Joel.

Despite Joel ambition to save Ellie. The action destroyed their relationship with each other, Ellie wanted to sacrifice herself for the cure. She saw what Joel did as devastating. It took 4 years for Ellie to finally forgive Joel and understand why he did what he did. That reminder of forgiveness is where Ellie finally realize that killing Abby wouldn't fix anything. Killing Abby won't bring Joel back, won't fix her relationships, won't bring back her friend. The path for revenge lead her to a destructive path.

Now talking about Abby, very similar events occur. After the death of her father by the hands of Joel. She couldn't stop thinking about her revenge. She spent her time training and looking for Joel hindering her relationship with Owen. After she killed Joel, Abby lost all her friends. She gets the people involve with her hurt such as Yara who sacrificed herself to save Lev and Abby. She was then kidnapped by slave traders where she was beaten and tortured for months. Her relationship with the young boy Lev brought her back to reality (sounds familiar?) . She learned to forgive Ellie and move on. It just took Ellie a few more months to get to that point.

The ending is very emotional. It ends with Ellie trying to play her guitar with her missing fingers, only to find out she can't. She lost everything trying to kill Abby, even the last gift Joel gave her. I don't think its all bad in the end, since Ellie can learn to play the Guitar the other way. Like playing the guitar from a different perspective. That's just a hypothesis parallel on my part.

The ending is meant to be ambiguous because its up to the player to decide why Ellie did the things she did. Like how it was up to the player to decide why Joel did the things he did.

I LOVED this game. I laughed, I cried, I sweated, I was pissed off and I felt EXHAUSTED by the end of this campaign. The feeling this game left me was depressing but thats how it should be. To all the so called Last of us "fans" who had a problem with the story, I recommend you go back and replay the first one. "The Last of Us" is not a single narrative nor just a survival zombie game. It has always been parallel stories of Man vs Man and the branching repercussions of ones actions. The humility and struggles of being a human in a world that is cruel and punishing has always been at the core of The Last of Us. Part two elevates this concept by putting you in the shoes of another person trying to cope in this complex and mentally taxing world. I can understand why people had a hard time liking this game due to the character you play as but I genuinely believe that if you did not understand why Naughty Dog went the direction they did, then you never understood the first game to begin with. A cruel world creates cruel stories. Now I'm not saying this a perfect game, but for people to write this game off with a 0/10 without logically reinforcing their opinions is sad and speaks volumes about the gaming community as a whole. Reading some of these reviews has lost me a few IQ points. Naughty Dog, thank you for bringing a nuanced and thought provoking sequel into the cultural zeitgeist. If you can sift through the thousands of nonsensical reviews you'll be sure to find people who honestly took the time to play the game whether they hated it or loved it.

I firmly believe and after having played the game 3 times, which is a very good game, its technical and sound section is perfect, its gameplay is as fun as the first, but this one perfects it excellently, the music is magical and always transmits everything a splendid feeling, the story, I think it is good, maybe it is not a masterpiece like the first The Last Of Us but it is very good, I understand that the player does not like it in the first instance, I hated it the first Once, but after playing it a second time and analyzing everything, I concluded that if it really transmits so many feelings to you and in such a faithful way, hate, courage, violence, sadness, tiredness, just magnificent. Maybe Abby's character is the worst of all, and that's what makes me give her a 9 instead of a 10 but I sincerely believe that Naugthy Dog did an excellent job for the rest. My only point against it is that Abby's development was not the best it could have been, maybe if they had presented him before seeing how he kills Joel, the player could have better sympathized with him.
In short, The Last of Us Part 2 is a very good game, I could say that it far exceeds the first The Last Of Us in most sections.
the only thing that remains just a little below is in the field of history, just a little.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of US 2 is the most conflicting game I've ever played. At times I hated it and at times I loved it. I was completely split down the middle. The first game introduced me to two of the most deep and believable characters in any game I've ever played. I couldn't wait to be reintroduced to them again and I was but not in the way I expected. During my first playthrough I was angry, confused and heartbroken. I questioned everything about Joel's death and why it was done so fast and so brutally. I almost didn't want to continue after that moment but my care for Ellie kept me going. Playing as Ellie again was refreshing and seeing how much she has developed and grown was interesting. When the narrative switched back to Abby i was upset. I was so angry at this character, I wanted her to feel the pain I felt and i knew Ellie felt. I'll be honest playing as Abby didn't change my mind, I just wanted to end and see where Ellie ended up, but when the game finally concluded I realized something. I realized what the games message was, at least what it was to me. Love is blinding. Love makes us do the best and worst of things. My love for Joel and Ellie prevented me from seeing they were just people and just as damaged as Abby. In the world of The Last Of Us everyone has had to cross a moral line to survive and Joel and Ellie are no exception but the love I have for these characters made me biased. Naughty Dog masterfully challenged the players own moral compass in this game by showing how flawed even the main characters are. I've never went so deep in thought over a video game and this is why i appreciate it so much. This game has the most bright of moments and the most dark of moments and ends on a note of mystery. Obviously the visuals are stunning, acting is second to none and I wouldn't expect anything less from a Naughty Dog game. I recommend playing the game twice because the first playthrough so emotionally heavy and can effect your perception on all the themes this game is trying to present. I'll end by saying that I'm still torn by the events of The Last Of Us Part 2 but at the same time I'm appreciative of the authentic emotional and realistic connection I have to Joel and Ellie. I really hope there is a third game because I want to Ellie's story continue. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I finished Last of Us Part 2 and I can't sleep. Like so many others I have too many thoughts and emotions in my head swirling right now and I think I understand the outrage and need to get my thoughts down. This is going to be long but I will avoid spoilers. To summarize: play this game at your own risk after playing the first one which can be traumatizing in its own right.

So lets start by setting aside the bigoted alt right movement who are attacking this game for similar reasons as Captain Marvel (yes LGBTQ characters make out and have sex in the game get over it).

Next point is that the original Last of Us came at a time when multi-player games and apocalyptic stories flooded the market. It changed how stories can be told in not just video games but movies. One could argue that several beloved movies such as Logan, Quiet Place, John Wick, Bird Box and many others wouldn't exist without it's inspiration. Same could be said for critically acclaimed story games like the new God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Uncharted 4, and even Spiderman PS4.

So obviously this franchise resonates with people and while people are criticizing the story for not having a point they are also criticizing it for having a political agenda. Neither are true. The directors and creators of this game said four years ago that making people uncomfortable was going to be the point of this game. They knew what they were doing. They knew people would be triggered. I think a lot of people are mad that they are feeling all these mixed emotions but they don't understand the deep psychological reasons why or dont have the self awareness to process these emotions due to the avoidance tendency modern society has created due to political, religious, and mental health issues as it makes them uncomfortable. On top of that the timing of this game is impeccable. Right during a pandemic where humanity and society is splitting itself apart.

This game is not positive vibes. This game is not the same type of fun like Naughty Dogs other franchise Uncharted. There is no winning in this game. One could argue it is not a game because of these traits. I'd agree. It's an experience. This game made me have a panic attack. It caused me extreme anxiety. Great, both me and the character have PTSD. This game was visually the most beautiful game I've ever played but also the most horrifc game I've ever seen. No it's not fun to have to shove a knife through a dogs throat because its about to tear your throat open and hear it whimper as it bleeds out. How the hell did I kill 10 people with 2 bullets and a empty beer bottle? Ah **** that guys name was Jimmy? Sorry I guess. I cant hear a clicking sound or a whistle right now without having my heart skip a beat. I am numb. I am hurt.
Traveling through Wyoming, Seattle, Santa Barbra, and more is breathtaking. What would I sacrifice for love? What would you sacrifice to survive? God I love dinosaurs. Can I play Hotel California on the guitar? Holy **** I can.

Right and wrong is all about perspective. Think for yourself. There is no such thing as good and evil. Humanity is horrible. This game may not be a 10/10 like the original. But I'd still give it an 9/10. Sometimes there is no meaning in death, sometimes it is unavoidable. Yes this game is painful.

Yes this game can be traumatizing but it's also beautiful. The longer time goes on I think the more people will appreciate this game. It is unforgettable. Things don't always go the way you want. Sometimes being a better person is not in your own self interest. At some point enough pain will break you. Sometimes the person you love is in the wrong and the person you hate is just reminding you of the person in the mirror.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is next level. You really need to sit and play this game. I have never been so immersed in a game or with a set of characters before. Obviously the graphics and game play are unmatched, that should go without saying. The acting in this game sets such high standards for future gaming (something we already knew with Naughty Dog games). The story is very dark, very draining and asks a lot of the player. It asks the player to trust the game and believe me it was hard. While playing the the second half, I too wanted to put my remote down and turn it off but I didn't. I wanted to get back to Ellie so badly I kept playing and playing, recklessly and rushing through some scenes. All of a sudden I started to realise that I cared about Abby. I didn't like her (the game never asks you to), but I understand her. The new characters are mostly great additions and really fleshed out. Definitely read the journals while you play. Once I had finished, man I was wrecked. Emotionally and mentally I needed to step away from the game and think about everything that had happened and everything I had done. It was there that I realized that this was an incredible game. I applaud Naughty Dog for the direction they took. I was a huge risk but for me it really paid off. It sucks if people genuinely didn't enjoy the game. Perhaps at a different stage in their life they might, i don't know. Either way, for me, this is the best game I have ever played. No medium has ever stuck in my head for so long. I am still thinking about the story and my interpretations. Uncharted was my favourite game series but TLOU has officially taken it's place. Expand

Yet, watching it unfold on the hardest difficulty once more. I now have the knowledge that I get to experience one of the greatest games in my 18 years of gaming. For another go-round! As it goes, for me The Last Of Us 2 is trilling and fascinating.
There where moments where I wanted to put the controller down because of the things the characters had to do. For the most the game is relentless and perhaps to it's detriment, at a point in time when we switch gears in the second half. Graphics and animations are like looking into a cinematic art gallery. It's also just amplified by great performance from the cast that I eventually grew fond of.

Combat always pushed the pace for me and I love playing with the battle encounters and set pieces that had me putting my hands over my head several times. There were points, where I had grown vicious towards the inhabitants of the game. But then started to question "Was there another way to deal with the situation?".

Also, we get great sounds effects from the explosions, to well produce sounds of Clickers and bad guys yearning in pain.

I have must point out a musical instrument that plays in later intense encounters. Felt like it was a mix of Hunter being Hunted, or like"Jaws" but I'm the shark moving in for the kill. The score in the game is fantastic. However I did see some glitches here and there, but that was into my second playthrough. Side note there is a moment in the game that I tulry wish I had when I was a kid. You will know when you get there. Is the game perfect? no game is None the less, the game is a bash. The Last Of Us 2 is gaming royalty. I did not expect much from the game. Yet, it gave me a perspective I did not ask for, but needed. It made me understand some meanings of obsession, forgiveness, war, love, and the cycle of pain and loss.

What's more it's a tale that you truly need to see through, like the two sides of a coin, to appreciate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A game that isn't worth the hate.

The story seems to get flamed so I'm starting with that and why its 3/4 of my review. So lets go.

For about 10-13 hours you play as Ellie (depends on how long you loot and explore the city). As you play as Ellie you see how she is consumed with getting revenge on Abby for killing Joel. However, the more you play you see how consumed she really is, and how far she takes it to kill Abby. During the story she loses friends, family, and fingers to get her. The more you play, it gets you thinking, is the revenge for Joel worth it? Many fans would say yes. However, I took a step back to see if it is actually worth doing so. As Ellie, you kill many people as revenge for Joel. However, there're times when you question it, such as she kills a pregnant women (though she didn't know she was) and when she threatens to kill a child (Lev). The longer you play, the more you question if Ellie's actions are Justified. If you believe so then wouldn't by the same logic Abby's actions are Justified for killing Joel??? I mean Abby isn't really the evil one in this story, Ellie is. Before you hate me for saying so, Abby doesn't kill anyone besides Joel. She only wanted Joel no one else, that is why she sparred Ellie and Tommy. However, Ellie kills almost everyone that is friends with Abby. She kills her ex, hers ex's pregnant gf, and more that took part at Joel's death but didn't kill him. They also wanted Justice for Joel killing their friends, but did they deserve to die? That's for you to decide. But what helps your decision is that you play as the "bad guys".

After playing as Ellie, you reset the clock and play as Abby for about 10 hours. You see her complicated story, the friends that took place at Joel's death and gives them the reason they where there. The women that was pregnant? She didn't want to part take, but only went for the safety of the people (she is the medic). As Abby, if you allow yourself to open up to her character and gave her a chance, you'll most likely ending up caring for her. Once you begun playing as a character for about 10 hours, you begun to understand her, her motives, her thought process of the world. You start to care for her and her complicated story. You see as she changes through out the story, and at the end of the game, I actually didn't want to kill her, she was basically Joel at that point because of how much you played as her. At the end of Abby's story, Abby kills Ellie's friend Jesse and beats up Ellie and her GF Dina. She was going to kill Dina until Lev says her name, where Abby then AGAIN spares Ellie and Dina.

After playing as Abby their is a time jump of a year or so. Ellie seems to have given up on Abby and his living happily with her GF Dina and her child JJ. However, she begins to have PTSD of Joel's death. Including that Tommy comes back and tells Ellie where Abby might be somewhere is California. At first Ellie decides no, but then at night she decides to leave her family and goes on the search for Abby. Her consume for revenge makes her lose her family. She then fights another gang of people and at the end fights Abby. She forces Abby to fight (which Abby is a shell of her former self because of the people in the gang). She forced Abby to fight by threatening Lev, a child. Again, her revenge threatens a child's life. A fight starts with Ellie winning, however later in the fight, as Ellie starts to drown Abby, Abby bites two of her fingers off. However, Ellie gets back on top of her and continues to try and drown her. She is only stopped by having a brief memory of Joel. Where she realizes that killing Abby wont bring Joel back, and that if she kills Abby, she will be Abby. She realizes it isn't worth anymore, and lets Abby and Lev go.

At the end she loses friends, her only family she had, and her fingers. Her fingers are important, because through the story she plays the guitar. The guitar symbolizes Ellie's memory of Joel, throughout the story she is constantly remembers him, however at the end, she cant play the guitar due to the loss of her fingers and she stops playing it. She then sets it down, has a small last hopeful memory of Joel, of her telling him she will try and forgive him for saving her in the first game. Then she leaves her empty home, and the memory of Joel, and moves on.

The story is all about revenge, but not the way you would think of it. You question Ellie's actions and choices. You start to see how hate and revenge consumes her. It is a story that is complicated, but it inst bad. It takes an open mind to understand it all. And once you start to understand it all, you'll enjoy the game so much more.

Gameplay is the probably the best part. It's fun to loot, discover the secretes of City of Seattle, and combat is smooth. More guns to unlock and upgrade. The Game also looks absolutely beautiful. The world looks polished and realistic, with so much depth to it.

All in all, it's worth it.

Mature stealth game settled in a post apocalyptic world with believable characters carrying a dark and twisted story. It is indeed the second part to it’s predecessor and the continuation of an arc that was on pause for so many years.

There are some 'on-rail' parts which cannot be Negotiated by the player, which in my opinion takes away from the immersion, but overall solid.

Enemy design was great, with some new introductions and reworks.
In the case of the infected, the way the different enemy types worked together was awesome, something that last of us 1 was missing.
The introduction of different factions gave the human AI a breath of fresh air, with different factions having a different amount of aggression and tactics.

Visually the game looks amazing, there is no arguing that, another Naughty Dog masterpiece.

The music even during gameplay fits every scene perfectly, from darks sewers and apartments to populated streets, the music is ace.
Love the little guitar set pieces during gameplay too.

From a story perspective, Naughty Dog built another interesting world, that I thoroughly wanted to explore.
While many players are not fans of a particular part in the story, this series it not 'happily ever after World', but one of suffering and growth and I think part 2 develops on this in a interesting way.

Overall I really liked the way the story progresses and while I do have some questions about certain characters development, the overall cohesion of the characters works well.

Thanks for another awesome story ND.

The Last of Us Part 2 is Naughty Dog's most ambitious and bold game yet. In my opinion, the risks that Naughty Dog took with this game really pay off and deliver a story that was deeply harrowing and challenging. The twist that comes about half way through the game took me by surprise and forced me to rethink my previous convictions. Although I was first resistant to this twist, I soon came around to what Naughty Dog was trying to do with the story and, by the time the credits rolled, I thought that the twist was a stroke of genius.

However, I did find that the pacing of the story lagged a bit in the second half. I think most, if not all, of the story beats were needed in order to tell the story, but perhaps some of the game's combat encounters could have been cut down or removed in order tighten up the second half's pacing.

Speaking of gameplay, if you enjoyed the first game's combat, you're going to love it in Part 2. Although the combat remains largely the same, new movement options - such as going prone, squeezing through tight spaces, and hiding in tall grass - offer the player knew options when tackling combat encounters. Although none of these added features are new to gaming at large, their inclusion in Part 2 is certainly a welcome addition. Coupled with the game's detailed animation system, the gameplay feels fluid, visceral and frantic.

Some other notable mentions: the acting in this game is phenomenal, as you'd expect given the standard set by the first game. All the actors bring their A-game and there's not a single weak link in what is huge cast of characters. The cutscenes are beautifully animated and extremely impressive. You can see tiny details, such as characters' pupils dilate, veins popping, and even the removing of a character's shirt with realistic fabric physics and no clipping (I don't think I've ever seen that in a game before). It's clear that a huge attention to detail was paid in order to make this game look as good as it does, and squeeze as much out of the PS4 as possible.

Overall, the game is a technical masterpiece with intense gameplay. I found the story very compelling, with some minor pacing issues, however I think it is also important to acknowledge how divisive the game has been. This is not a story for everyone. It's very heavy and exhausting to play, and I don't think anyone could have guessed the direction this story would go (prior to the leaks, of course.) And although some people (quite a lot actually) won't like the direction of this story, I believe the more open-minded you go into this game, the more likely you are to appreciate and respect what it's trying to do.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I believe The Last Of Us Part II to be an amazing game , not just due to gameplay, which has been improved since the first game, but story-wise as well. Many people are upset about Joel's death, and the fact that ten hours is spent playing as Abby, but I believe this adds character growth, and shows that the game will not be pulling it's punches. It tells a dark story, set in a dark time, and shows that not everyone can have the happy ending they deserve. In terms of gameplay, imagine the first game, with more involved melee combat(being able to dodge, for example) and more crafting recipes available. The games stays fresh when switching characters, due to different weapons, different allies, different character abilities, and different melee combat. The difficulty settings allo each person to make the game's difficulty to their taste, allowing AI to be smarter or dumber, resource availability, player damage received and dealt, even the friendly AI can be modified to be more aggressive or passive. There are afew minor visual bugs I encountered, but they were easily fixed, but that is the only fault I encountered, and why I rate this game a 9.8 out of 10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have a lot of positives to say about this game. Even though I’ve marked it accordingly, there are spoilers ahead but I WILL NOT spoil the end. Still, proceed at your own caution. The Last of Us Part II is one of the greatest games of this generation and this morning’s news of it being the best selling PS4 exclusive game ever prove that. The main story has a roller coaster of affects. Abby as a playable character that you have to use for 10 hours was probably not the best option Naughty Dog could’ve taken and especially when you have to fight Ellie as Abby in the concluding moments was a bad part of the story. Other parts of the story were great like the parts where you get swarmed by runners as Abby very early in the game and when you go on the adventure to the aquarium are really fun and enjoyable to play. The gameplay is also great. You now get different books that unlock different upgrade paths to upgrade Ellie and Abby. You also collect collectables throughout the story to create a collection. All in all, the newly designed gameplay mechanics work well with this game. My last point is graphics. They are phenomenal. People used to go crazy about RDR2 graphics but this game almost feels like Ellie and other characters are real people and not animated. The scenery is truly breathtaking. From the incredible snowy mountains, to flooded and decaying buildings with the vines growing throughout, this game looks like real life. I can only imagine what a remastered version is going to be like. In summary, Part 2 is a great sequel to the first, it deepens understandings of characters through amazing graphics. Even though the story gets a little dicey at times, the rest makes up for it. I truly recommend you to play this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good game overall, although there are some critiques that stop it from reaching the level of TLoU1.

    What it does good:
    • Great gameplay, overall a much tighter experience than TLou. Combat feels much more dynamic.

    • Beautiful sound and level design. Levels feel much more open, realistic, and lived in than the first game

    • First half of the game is phenomenal, a 10/10. A very focussed revenge story that has a lot of force behind it with Joel's death. The semi open world exploration with Dina was probably the most fun I had during my playthrough.

    What it does poorly:
    • The switch to Abby halfway through the game causes it to lose a lot of momentum. ND clearly wanted you to sympathise with her, but after the gut blow of watching Joel die, this proves too difficult to pull off. I feel her section could have been trimmed down or rearranged to have more impact on the story. Maybe have us play for a few hours on our way to hunt down Joel, so we begin to bond with her character before she kills him? And later alternate between Ellie and Abbys sections, and have Abby's story tie in more directly with Ellie's? It seems the big struggle with Abby is that by having her kill Joel immediately and then spending 10 hours hunting her as Ellie, the player is too primed to hate her, meaning the comparisons in her character to Joel and Ellie are lost. And although thematically Abby's story ties directly to Ellie's, again, it really doesn't mesh well and ends up killing the momentum the story had. I think seeing the consequences of Ellie's actions more directly on Abby would end up being more effective at having us sympathise with her, and lead to a tighter overall narrative. • More boring characters. TLoU1 had a small, but effective cast of side characters. Each served a clear purpose and was memorable. In TLoU2, the cast of characters is much larger, and the game suffers for it. Abby's friends are indistinct for the most part, and I found myself constantly questioning who these characters were. Jesse's death also struggles to deliver much of a blow, since he comes across as a very uninteresting character. He is the definition of plain, whose only character trait seems to be being Ellie's friend who dies. • The ending. Having Ellie decide to spare Abby leaves a bad taste in the players mouth. We are clearly meant to draw parallels between Ellie and Joel, and Abby and Lev. But our connection to Joel runs to deep, and Abby's growth is too performative to have much of an impact on the player. After watching some interviews with Niel Druckmann the ending has started to grow on me, but after initially finishing it I was left feeling disappointed.

Overall, you should definitely play this game. It analyses the consequences of Joel's decision to lie to Ellie in TLoU1, and is overall an enjoyable (if very, VERY bleak) experience. I just feel ND over-indulged with Abby (having far too much of the story focus on her), and underestimated how easy it would be to get players to sympathise with her. The point of art is to make you feel something, which this game definitely accomplishes. I just wish Ellie could have a little happiness in her life, and didnt leave me feeling so bleak, haha.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has made a lot of bold choices that angered a mass majority of The Last of Us fans, I did my absolute best to be as open minded as possible and upon finishing the game I didn't know how to feel, and as a disclaimer I'll say that I'm a HUGE fan of stories focusing on misery and tragedy. I played the first game on release and have held it to a masterpiece level, I came into the sequel with a handful of spoilers and was infuriated with some of the choices made. Though as I played, I couldn't hide my dread for the things I knew were to come.

Now I must say, I became VERY invested as I played and it's one of the only games in the current generation I didn't have to force myself to finish. I hated Abby to begin with but her reasons became more clear as I progressed, although I couldn't forgive her for killing Joel and was very aggravated when playing as her against Ellie. But I did feel pretty bad for Abby after finding her tortured and hanging on the pillar. Her escaping pissed me right off, but as I thought how she suffered worse than death, Although I wanted Ellie to kill her, I understood why she left.

Ellie had become very unlikable throughout this game. It was reasonable and believable to her character and situation but how she treated Joel and Tommy seemed very uncalled for. Her decisions to leave Abby alive, brake the promise to Tommy and not tell him she changed her mind, and close out Joel after he came clean and kept his patience. I don't know if I rooted for her because of the history of the first game or because she was the less unpleasant of the two characters. But i was happy she survived and curious where it goes from here.

I wanted more emotion with the final scene between Joel and Ellie, as I feel the final encounter left a lot to be desired but still had me pretty chocked up how Joel cried and couldn't get out what he wanted to say. A few things lost my emotion, namely how large Abby was and Lev going through a gender transition, more power to them, but I feel during an apocalypse it doesn't seem like something you'd see. a little nit picking but it did cross my mind.

Overall I didn't want the story to follow what it did, but I was as open minded as I could be and ended up enjoying the game, not as much as the first, but enjoyed it non the less and followed my funny little fetish of a tragic story. You should play it if you were a fan of the first game, but do your best to go in without any hate towards it and don't let all the bad reviews deter you. If you've already played it try not to let the hate train effect your opinion, a lot of things I disliked about this game, but there's not denying it was good. Just a lot of questionable choices.

Everyone was hoping for a new adventure of Joel and Elly. They could have made an Part 2, just Like the First one, everyone is happy. But this is not was everybody wanted. This is not the typical Mainstream sequel. U really need to be Openminded about this Game, U need to get involved with it.
In the middle of the game, i really wanted to Stop to play at a certain Point. I used to hate the decision they made. But i paused for a day. Let everything sink in. And kept playing.
And they did a great job, giving a feeling about what consequences it Made for them. When U Walk Into the Aquarium at the end of the Seconds third and see what happend, U really feel Bad for her too. This is a Story about revenge, but more likely about forgiveness like the Sequence with Joel at the end pointed out.
BUT. U need to let any expectations U had go. U need to Play this without Anger about what happened. A Bit, yea she did horrible things, but in the end she lost more than Ellie. U need to hate her to feel the Game, but U need to forgive her and Play her Plot Like its Ellies.

And that is what the Game does great for me. U Play that hatred character but U kinda going to understand. The Story would worked Others way around too. For me, this is an emotional rollercoaster, i often didnt knew what the **** to think over what happend. And in the end, If u cant let your hatred go, you loose way more than u already had.

Technically flawless. This Game is the Jewel of this console Generation. Perfect graphics, great Atmosphere to deliver the right Mood.

Although, I understand that a lot of people will don't like this story, The Last of Us shows that nobody is infallible and nobody has the right to an honorable destiny just because we like it. People change, people falter and that's the idea that I feel the game uses to afflict us, that's the magic of the story. The events and characters develop in a very fluid way, without too much force, you may even see acts like in the game near to you.

Therefore, I highly recommend play this game.

I personally liked the last of us 2 it shows us a way ellie copes with Joel’s death and how she begins as a cute innocent girl to a toughened rough fighter because of what she’s seen and experienced and it shows us a lot of how Joel impacted her and how she will avenge him, certain parts could’ve been done better and could’ve showed more of Joel and made it more emotional but in short, I liked it a lot

I liked a specific scene where Joel sings to Ellie, because the last words Joel heard from ellie was ‘I’ll try to forgive you’ and then you see him smile with happiness and it makes u feel that even tho he died he died knowing that he was forgiven by Ellie and that’s all he wanted, he was scared to share his emotions to people since his daughter died but with Ellie how could he not since he saw so much of his daughter in her. The last of us 2 isn’t a bad game it just could’ve been better, they tried something new and in some areas it succeeded but it others it failed but what u need to see is this is possibly the best scene in the entire game as you see the same bond they shared in the first game take place here and it just puts a smile on your face how much he cared for her, overall a 9/10 game but their relationship puts a smile on everyone’s face. :’)

Just watching your surroundings for 10 minutes what i would never do in a different game. The story tho was something i did not expect i don't not see the leaks or so only the trailers so i was really hurt when i Joel died i really wanted to get the old feeling back playing with Joel and Ellie but yes that was not gonna happen. Ik liked the way how they tried to give 2 perspectifes, but even tho they tried so hard i did not feel anything for Abby but i liked the story and gameplay with here just being a god damn beast going trough all the enemy's. The ending was a bit rushed in my opinion the scene in the farmhouse could be a better ending when Tommy says that Ellie has promised it, but she kept saying no, it could lead up to a next game. I would really want to see a part 3 i love the world of the Last Of Us.I love Ellie i hope there is more to tell about here and where she's going to end up! Expand

Naughty Dog.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game probably is one of the games that polarized the fanbase the most. There are those who absolutely hate the game, those who absolutely love the game and few of those who are somewhere inbetween.
First off I have to say that I really detest the review bombing of this game right after release when it's obvious, that the players didn't even have the time to play this game. I also think counter rating the game as a 10/10 doesn't help either. Either way don't do this game justice.
Now I'd like to say that I enjoyed the game as you can see in the score. I also understand, that people wanted a continuation of the narrative of the first game, yet I think it is unfair to slander this game based only on the fact, that people didn't get the wholesome, heartwarming narrative. To call the narrative of this game bad, garbage, crap or whatever other adjective people use just show that people can't rate this game as an individual game. Of course both games are connected through characters and setting, but is it really that bad for the developers to go in a different direction with a sequel? I certainly don't think so. It was quite obvious that this game is going a more darker path judging by the trailers. It may have been somewhat dishonest by the developers to alter the trailers slightly, but it is nothing new in the industry.

Now to the actual review of this game.
First off the graphics. one word is enough to describe it which is gorgeous.
The mechanics are simmilar to the first game, but it was definitely polished with dodging enemy mele attacks, proning, hiding in tall grass, environmental puzzles with ropes and the absolutely detailed, smooth and beautiful reaction of the characters to the environment and hits.
As I mentioned above, the narrative is darker than the first game. If you don't like games with dark stories and themes, this might not be your cup of tea. But if you are fine with it, a well written and very nuanced story awaits you. This game has everything a good and complete narrative needs to have. The setting, with a bit of Jackson, a very beautiful and detailed Seattle and also beautiful Santa Barbara in the last part of the game. There are the well established characters from the first game like Joel, Eliie and Tommy, but also new characters like Ellie's love interest Dina, their good friend and Dina's ex Jesse, Lev, who plays a important role and of course Abby. There also are minor characters like Abby's friends and Yara for example. Now let me make clear the sexual preferences of the charcters. Ellie is obviously lesbian, which we already knew from the Left behind DLC of the first game, Dina is bisexual, Abby is NOT transgender contrary to what was rumored pre release after the leaks, but Lev is transgender, which plays a small role in the narrative.
The Plot as many probably already know is Joel getting brutally killed by Abby and Ellie setting off on a quest to seek revenge. the death of Joel, which is very controversial, comes early in the game. Why is it controversial? Because Joel was a well loved main character from the first game and many, think that the way Joel died, or rather that Joel acted out of character trusting strangers. But if you pay close attention to what happened before and read the logbooks in the outposts, you'll know it wasn't out of character and that the same would have happened no matter what. That was what I meant with nuanced, that you can miss a thing like the logbook. There aren't only logbooks but dialogues between characters that are missable during parts in which you control them or not so obvious dialogues during cutscenes. The game is full of them. That is what makes this story great, but also the reason why people think the narrative is bad.
I don't want to go into too much detail, but you'll play quite a long part as Abby and it is very inportant for players to fully understand the theme and narrative of the game. If you can set aside your feelings, probably hatred and disgust, towards Abby and what happened to Joel, you'll realize that Abby's arc is very important.
The game also have wholesome moments in forms of flashbacks.
I don't want to write the whole story down as it's between 25 and 30 hours long and I'm also running out of available characters, so I'll let you experience the majority of the story yourself.
The leaks have done a tremendous amount of damage to this game as it didn't show the nuanced parts and important details of the game.
Please make sure to go into the game with a neutral mindset and please make sure to pay attention to detail as it is important to understand the greater narrative and the also controversial ending as well.

My final conclusion: It's a game with beautiful graphics (probably the best on PS4), great mechanics and also a great story. Again it is very important to pay attention to details to get the nuances and you'll experience a great, very human story of revenge, love and redemption.

This is what a sequel should be: it has all the good things Part I had, and introduces new mechanics that integrate perfectly into the game.

The art direction is, once again, top-notch.

The level design is very good, giving the player many ways to kill or sneak past enemies.

The narrative, wich is clearly the core of this game, is again excellent. It was the strongest point of the first game, and it is the same with Part II. All the animations, sounds and dialog interwine perfectly, making you feel part of the game.

Now, about the story (no spoilers). I get why people are angry. Many times one has high expectations, and when those expectation don't match with what we get, we get frustrated. But, to trash a game, a game studio, and to ask for the writers or other employes of Naughty Dog to resign? Boy, just, what the hell?

The story is complex, much more than in the first game. I don't see "forced agenda" or politics in the game, and this comes from someone who hates that kind of thing. I mean, we know Ellie is gay since the first game, and there are people still not cool with that? What were you expecting?

The game dificulty can be changed overall (easy, moderate, hard, etc), or you can tweak it to your personal like: you can set the AI of your allies independently of the AI of the enemies, you can make the stealth mechanics more forgiving and the combat mechanics more challenging at the same time, and other things like that.

Why not giving it a 10? Because it's not a perfect game. Some animations, like walking backwards, sometimes feel odd. Also, the game makes it very clear when you are near enemies, and when there is no more danger. For people like me, who sucks at stealth games, this is awesome, but I know there are people who don't want any kind of help like this.

    TL;DR:
If you liked the first game, and you like complex stories with complex characters, you are going to enjoy this game.

In the first part, I loved playing it (Ellie part) but in the Abby part I found it too boring and pointless because whoever wanted to play with the person who killed a character as dear as Joel and is practically half the game apart .

Leaving aside the end and the part of abby I think it would be an excellent 10/10 game, but the story had very good potential and it could have been the whole game entertaining and fun.
This game does not deserve all the hate it receives because it is a game with excellent graphics and very good physics.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not at all surprised to see the ridiculous and unwarranted backlash The Last of Us Part II has received after a very long and unsustainable hype campaign. For some inexplicable reason, when it comes to evaluating story, or a video game, many unapologetically hold the unreasonable belief that their petty expectations are somehow gospel - every whim must be satisfied, every desire fulfilled. In fact, these petulant masses have grown so demanding and vociferously critical of change that genuinely valid criticism of the game has been almost completely eclipsed by an embarrassing number of immature/undeveloped/sexist/homophobic/transphobic remarks and sentiments. In this regard they begin to resemble the single-minded and intolerant Seraphites of the actual game who are themselves, morally backwards and terrified of change. They're also very fun to shoot at.

Ultimately, The Last of Us Part II is not the crowdpleasing sequel certain "fans" expected it to be and for that it has been undeservedly jeered at and spat upon by legions of deluded and entitled people, spouting trolling comments on Twitch streams and Youtube reviews. What none of these people take into account, however, is that (from both a gameplay and storytelling perspective) TLOU2 succeeds in almost every way at delivering a fresh and engrossing survival horror video game about revenge and forgiveness. Above all, the game is committed to taking the player firmly out of their comfort zone (something any good survival horror game should always strive to do); indeed, nothing in this game feels safe, not even (ingenuously) the weapons upgrade menu. A running theme in TLOU2 is the cruel, but absolutely necessary, endangering of what we (and Ellie) take for granted - be it an upgrade menu, the morality of our in-game actions, or Joel Miller himself. As is clear to anyone paying attention, many scathing reviews of this game seem invariably and inescapably concentrated on a particularly traumatising and brutal event in the story's opening hours and it is not altogether impossible to see why. For a considerable period of playtime, my rage and Ellie's rage were one, I was genuinely consumed with hatred (the kind that motivates you to commit virtual suicide over and over again when you are suddenly and unexpectedly forced to play as a character you have grown to despise for what, at first, seems like an inconceivable and inappropriate length of time). But the jarring unpleasantness of Abby's questline is part of the experience; it's not supposed to win the player over at the very beginning. Like any conflict, a more nuanced and balanced understanding of the opposing positions takes time to develop - it takes hours and hours of reflection and contemplation (something Ellie herself achieves at a slower rate than the actual player). Over time, a general disconnect is imposed between us and Ellie - after seeing Abby's capacity for committing selfless deeds and protecting the innocent, we can no longer hold onto that rage which infected us so violently at the beginning of the game. This, of course, does not excuse Abby's actions, but the whole ordeal poses a very pertinent dilemma to the player. Both Ellie and Abby (not to mention Joel) are undoubtedly guilty of having done terrible things but is it not impossible for someone to commit terrible deeds and nonetheless remain a good person? Or are Abby and Ellie beyond the possibility of redemption?

For certain, TLOU2's skewed morality is a dilemma reinforced in subtle (and not so subtle) ways throughout the game - if it's not the tribal warfare raging across Seattle (itself a conflict obsessively and circuitously preoccupied with who started what and with endless justifications for increasingly violent and extreme acts of retaliation) then it's the tongue-in-cheek trading card collectibles scattered throughout the world which perform the relatable, adolescent urge to "grade" fictional characters on a moral spectrum from "Villain" to "Hero" with even the possibility to include "Neutral" heroes and villains. Where do we place ourselves on such a scale? Especially after we realise we have widowed and orphaned countless members of the WLF?

The most valid criticism of this game, I feel, is its chronologically chaotic approach to pacing. It's almost conspiratorial to think about how similar Ellie's character model has been taken to resemble Ellen Page when the narrative order of TLOU2 appears to take its cues from Beyond: Two Souls, a title in which Page played the leading role (complete with morally grey dilemmas and sad, wistful acoustic guitar performances). While many are upset with the decision to have Joel savagely beaten to death within the game's opening hours, I can think of no better way to inject this level of raw, emotional conflict and narrative urgency into what could have been a fairly predictable sequel. TLOU2 is more than just a pretty face. There is real depth here to explore.

Awesome expansion on the first games story. A story of loss and revenge loved every minute of it. Would of liked a difficulty trophy.

I just finished this game and really enjoyed it. I loved the original last of us and this contains more of everything except multiplayer (which is too bad). I've heard that there might be a standalone multiplayer in the future though. The story is really dark so it's probably only suitable for mature players.

From my point of view - the Last of Us part 2 was a phenomenal game for 2020. Aside from some little bugs in the controls - the way in which ND went with the story was done well. Both characters for me were very enjoyable.

    THAT SCENE:
The game's morals are all in the grey after Joel's death happens - understandable. You have to think with an open mind, how would revenge affect the characters? In Ellie's case, revenge is the driving force for her side of the story. You want to chase down Abby and find out as to what the actual hell was going through her head.
Early in the game, we've got no idea as to what he actually did to warrant Abby's team to track them down - we can guess, sure - but it's never said out loud until you play Abby's section. Look at this section from both sides and see what revenge is doing; for Abby, it's getting revenge for the death of her father and the lack of cure. Abby walks in to see her father shot in the head, she's rightfully angry for her loss. Ellie wants revenge for the death of a father figure. Also angry. If I were to put myself in either character's shoes - I would feel exactly the same if I were in that position.
Revenge is one hell of a motivator. Who's the real enemy? Is it Ellie - for chasing down the WLF team on a manhunt? Is it Abby? Is it Joel? There's no clear cut line of right and wrong anymore, only shades of grey.

I personally don't feel like it was rushed - I felt like Joel's death was at the right spot. Don't get me wrong - I screamed through it and then promptly paused for a cry. It gave the game enough of a push to go 'Oh, this is a thing we need to deal with right now let's go!' as the most 'excitement' that the characters had to deal with at that time is patrols and the clicker/runner groups. The Jackson crew had 4 years of idling. They were living at that point (they had winter dances!), not fighting to survive and without that death - I am unsure as to where the game would have gone. It gave the game enough of a push for the narrative to keep going.
TLOU isn't farming sim and rainbows - we knew it was a gritty game from the first one.

    ENDING:
So the ending has brought around a mixture of views; I thought it was OK. It ended a cycle of revenge. What would have Ellie gained if she killed Abby? Potentially Lev chasing her to enact his revenge for his newfound sister, starting the cycle again? It wouldn't have brought Joel back, nor would it help the PTSD/Panic attacks, or the terms in which her relationship with Dina was left. It would have left Ellie in a more broken state than what we saw at the end of the game.

    CHARACTERS AND COMPANIONS:
There were genuine conversations that didn't feel forced out for the sake of the player. Dina and Ellie's discussion of Judaism in the synagogue and was one of the most organic conversations I've seen from video game characters in ages. The relationships shown between the characters made it realistic; Jesse's teasing at the start of the game, Ellie and Dina with the snowball fight - realistic! (and wholesome)

The build of Abby in the game was also real - regardless of the 'female head on male body' comments. Look at women who do deadlift, or do MMA/UFC - they are built with muscle galore. Look at Jessie Graff, Weili Zhang, Ronda Rousey, Jessica Buettner, Rebecca Rowley as examples. Broad shoulders doesn't diminish femininity. Actual, real-life body types shown in a AAA game that wasn't hypersexualised was a nice take.

    GRAPHICS:
The fact that the ND team had functioning rope physics was amazing, in my opinion. The introduction of being able to gather and throw a rope - and have it looking realistic was incredible.
The snow generation on trees in the early Jackson/outskirts of Jackson was incredibly realistic. Sometimes it glitched out and was bright - there were some texture issues, yes, but aside from that, you could see the spray of snow after you landed in it. You could see blood from the enemies progressively soak into the snow (and the sole of Ellie's converse) and it track through the snow as a footprint and not just look like a red smudge on the screen.

The attention to detail is wild in TLOU. Look at Ellie when she puts a bandage on - the blood soaks through over time. It's always annoyed me for the longest time when characters flail at their backpack (fully closed) and magic something into their hand - Ellie grabs things out of the side of her bag if they're small (i.e Brick/Molotov) because it's not actually closed. If you spent time thinking 'why's her bag not closed, that's going to annoy me' - that's why.

    SOUND:
The sound in ND games have always been good. I got emotional during the first Joel song. Guitar moments in TLOU are nice, as you can either play what the game wants you to - or crack out Seven Nation army without the game throwing a fit. You get ringing in your ears if someone fires directly above you (attention to detail is wild!)

    GG Naughty Dog.

One of the most emotionally impactful games I've ever played. It was great to experience such a challenging story, it left me feeling almost emotionally violated and resonated deeply. I expected it to be a fun, heartfelt continuation from the first game playing with Joel and Ellie, but instead, I got a rollercoaster of an emotional experience which I'll never forget. I highly recommend giving it a try despite what all the negative reviews say. The game does suffer from some pacing issues and repetitive parts, which is the reason why I don't give it a 10/10. A very good game, the senselessness of revenge and hate was very well represented here.
You could have saved the last hour, but from my point of view it was a masterpiece like the first part.

From a story standpoint, I was completely invested the entire time. This game has many twists and turns in store, and while some are certainly controversial, Naughty Dog has crafted a unique, captivating story that is unforgettable. The game is long, and as a result has some points in the game that are much slower than others, but the climatic points of the game make the entire thing worth it. 9/10, I think cutting 3/4 hours off the game would have done it justice, but overall and amazing experience. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely loved this game and I think Naughty Dog should be at least commended for trying out something quite different and more risky than most other story-driven games in recent times. I can definitely see why some people aren't happy with the direction that this game went, especially since it begins with the death of a beloved character, but don't dismiss it as "bad writing" just because your favorite character dies - the world of this game is unforgiving and relentless. Beyond that, I'm glad that this game isn't just a cut-and-dry revenge story. On the surface, this game seems like it's completely centered around hate, but I feel like the game is more a cautionary tale of obsession and the importance of forgiveness and letting go of the past, and I respect this more nuanced take that the studio had decided to go with. Yes, it would've been satisfying to have killed Abby at the end, but that would have undermined the entire point of the game: that revenge won't undo the deeds of the past, and that the best way to deal with loss is not to dwell on it but to move on. Besides the story, this has some of the best music, acting and graphics of any PlayStation game to date. The gameplay's pretty smooth and it's solid as a stealth/action game. However, my biggest gripe with the game is probably through it's pacing - Ellie's first 3 days in Seattle I'm okay with, but Abby's part (especially day 1) felt like it was dragging on a little bit since it was jarring how all the momentum that had built up to the conclusion of Ellie's day 3 was just suddenly lost. Otherwise, this is a great, emotional journey that I would recommend any Last of Us 1 fan to at least experience with an open mind. Regarding the hate for the game, there is definitely some valid criticism, but I wouldn't blindly base my opinion on the game based on story beats without any context or based on what other people online say about it. And that goes for both sides. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My only complaint is the ending. It would be better if it gave the player a choice to kill Abby or not. But even then, when Ellie gets home it would still be the same ending where she is missing fingers and can’t play the guitar. Some moments I found rather…awkward and odd. But they were very miniscule in the grand scheme of the story. The gameplay and graphics were phenominal. But yeah, I really liked it. You should play it before jumping to thinking it’s bad. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
