Not mentioning that acting, sound design, facial expresions of characters is excelent. Gameplay and enemy AI is also little better than in first game.

I'll gladly give the game a 9/10 due to the fact that naughty dog knows what they're doing and the graphics were amazing. Of course the story line could have been better to us major fans of the last of us but it is what it is and we can't change it. Just nice to have naughty dog around to make amazing video games to enjoy.

Although this is a open world game but the gameplay doesn't feel like one as it's so much engraved into the story telling and that's why scavenging for supplies at the nearby buildings doesn't played out that well. It would be better if those weapons upgrades were on the main story path and the game gave more time on developing the character(on the second half) emotionally.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of greatest games this year, one of the best games in this generation and just one of the greatest games of all time. Despite all the controversy surrounding half-fake leaks without context, review bombing and baseless disgusting rumours and death threats, the game is out and people can now judge it for themselves. Let's see what it's all about:

Story: This story is brutal, haunting, harsh and depressing. It takes place in a world where there's no happy ending. Right from the start it shocks you with a powerful even that makes sense in hindsight. After that, a journey start, involving likeable characters with nice interactions between them, a lot of powerful moments and big twists. In the second half the game goes in an unpredictable direction, surprising you, making you feel confused, playing with your emotions. And in the end it all reaches it's climax. A brutal and exhausting climax, that capitalizes on everything that happened before it and leaves you empty and just a little bit hopeful. It's not a bright and cheery story, that's for sure and it can not work for some people, but it's not bad as some people would like you to believe. The characters are likeable, despite committing human mistakes and showing their darkest side in their worst moments. You can't just pick a side and stick to it, because this is a very morally grey world and a very morally grey story. Despite all the good moments, some things can fall a little flat and the story relies on coincidences too much. 9/10.

Gameplay: The gameplay is phenomenal. The game takes everything good from the first one and builds on it. Level design is nice and you can use fully to your advantage. Melee system allows you to brutally dispatch enemies and avoid damage thanks to the new "dodge" button, gunplay is satisfying and stealth is nervewracking, but very easy and is almost always an option. Infected enemies have multiple variations which require their own approach to dealing with them. Sections with them often have a horror feel, especially when it comes to a reworked "stalker" infected type. Human enemies use different weapons, can have dogs that sniff you out and can throw molotovs. The AI is pretty smart, they can flank you, cover each other, heal themselves and generally be a nuisance(The game was played on Hard difficulty). The game also has a bunch of unique encounters, which need to be experienced. Outside combat you can solve simple puzzles while exploring the world, find collectibles and resources and discover optional world-building materials and scenes. 10/10

Sound: The game sounds incredible. Be it the crunching of the snow under your feet, the sound of the rain above your head, gunshots, cries of pain and roars of the infected. Gustavo Santaolalla's soundtrack is beautiful, somber and haunting and definitely deserves mentioning. 10/10

Graphics: The Last Of Us 2 is one of the most beautiful PS4 titles. It's phenomenal from technical and design standpoint. The animations, the little details, the quality of textures. Everything is just so pleasing to the eye. It's not something I can describe with my words because I'm not good with technical terms, but you have to experience it. 10/10

I've only encountered a couple of very small bugs with textures or animations, that were really rare for 30 hours it took me to finish the game. In the end, I loved the game and would recommend everyone to play it. Unfortunately, I can't in all honesty give it the maximum rating because of couple moments. But the story is engaging and great, the gameplay is one of the best you can experience and the game just looks, sounds, feels and plays fantastic. A definite buy.

Expand

This game is a must play for those who finished the first. Even if you end up not liking the story, it is the next step in ellie and joels relationship and pushes that tense scene at the end of the first all the way to it's breaking point!

The game-play is phenomenal and the story is very intriguing, and if you're at all paying attention, it will make you question your own moral tendencies. Though it is hard to like at first due to the story unveiling the true nature of humanity with everyone, including the main characters of the first game, the quality of the game shows itself once you're done and have time to reflect. In short, I loved it. There were a few lines of dialogue that turned me off or made me roll my eyes but the game itself is much more than that. There is plenty of enjoyment to be had from this game and I hope that others give it a chance. Even knowing key points about the ending, and feeling apprehensive about it as I played through, I never got to the point where I felt like it wasn't worth it to see things through. Two things keep me from giving the game a 10/10, one is a particular boss fight that is.... "stealth based?" which I did not have fun with. It was like hitting a brick wall as far as progress in the game. The other issue that I have is the play time/lack of replay value. While I enjoyed the game immensely I don't see much to do in a new game+ besides go through the story again which is something I might do years down the road but for now the case is just going to collect dust.

TLDR - was biased about the game, wife bought it for me, played it, enjoyed it, give me a reason to play new game +

I can't say I enjoyed every minute of this game, but I did want to play every minute of it. I have never played a game that led me through so many contrasting emotions. I could list a lot more. Two daysI can't say I enjoyed every minute of this game, but I did want to play every minute of it. I was uncomfortable, I cried, I hated Naughty dog, I laughed, I was tired of it, I was genuinely touched, I felt dismissive... I could list a lot more. Two days after finishing it and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. The only thing I am sure of is that I've never thought about a game as much as I have thought about this one.

Game play wise, it is solid. I played on moderate and felt it was a little more forgiving than the first game when it came to resources, but the areas are larger and there is a lot more to discover and explore. I had some truly wild surviving 'by the seat of your pants' spells in the game, expending my resources and going hail Mary to survive which was incredibly satisfying and adrenaline filled.

The game is a lot more open that TLOU, there are some large expansive areas which can be explored or ignored, which in my eyes is something of a double edged sword. There is so much to be discovered in the optional areas, sweet, funny, touching, bleak and harrowing world building moments that really add to the game, but could be easily missed. If you’re playing just for the main narrative, and head for that next 'checkpoint' at every opportunity, there is a huge amount to be missed.

There is no other game like this. You are forced into situations that you do not want to be in, you are forced to do things that you do on want to do. You do not get a choice how these characters behave, you are pulled through a story against your will and forced to contemplate who these characters really are. It's not a game to make you happy, but it is an experience like no other game will give you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The controversy surrounding this game is minuscule to the engrossing story. This has developed into one of those games that truly shocks the player and exemplifies the grotesque nature of revenge. Nothing can truly prepare you, that is unless you played the first game. I am very partial to Ellie and Joel's relationship but in the game's opening act sets up the premise of the game until the very end of it.

The story has always been the series biggest strengths and we get to see it clearly in display here. Naughtydog's finest. Although timeline skipping and dancing back and forth are not my favorite ways of storytelling it does have it significance in the stories of both the main characters and their motivations.

I can't say that in this game world society's biggest enemy would be the fungus or the infected but the cruelty of desperate people trying to survive. It is on a damn pedestal here so big that you see it in the cover art of Ellie's anguish face.

The game controversial Lesbian romance and the Tran-sexual character is not that distracting from the story. I myself wasn't even a fan of it but it didn't deter me from completing the game.

The horror elements were topknotch and the music was very riveting. The new infected were really scary and that area in the hospital with Abby was truly something out of hell itself. The fights stealthiness through human patrols and settlements was on the edge of your seat. Extremely satisfying was taking out enemies in stealth while snaking your way onward.

So while people are upset that one of the MC does die or being upset about the LGBTQ characters spread sporadically in with the story don't let them distract you from a powerful tale of revenge in a woeful world pitted against the remaining survivors. You can't please everyone but at least the game has done well enough in its own right.

And be mindful of people who review the game on launch day. They didn't finish it and are just going off of hearsay downplaying on bias alone. I just finished it today at a sensible speed and appreciate the game for what it is. Lots of hate for something they clearly do not understand nor were they prepared for.

Is the last of us part II a game that is perfect and a true game of the generation? I honestly don't think so. Is this game great and worth playing for every PS4 owner? Hell yea. These days we are not getting a lot of single-player narrative focused games without an open world. We should be thankful for this game beacuse it's one of few that are like that. I don't understand the people that are angry about the story, about how they killed theirs favourite characters. This isn't a story in which you think wow this character is the good one and this one is bad one I hate the bad one and love the good one. Everyone is a scumbag, everyone has a reason to be a scumbag. Ellie got her Father figure killed, but Abby had her real Dad killed by Joel, Joel not only killed her father but Joel made saving the world from the Infected impossible. Everyone has their reason but everyone is driven by the need to revenge, and that is never good. Overall the gameplay is still great for people that liked TLOU 1. And the graphics are just incredible. I don't think that for most people this game will be a game of generation, for me personally it is not, but it is hell of a game, and one of the best I played. Ah, don’t believe the flock stuck in the 1-st TLOU, part 2 is great in that it touches different strings: it’s all about seeing one picture from different angles to truly evaluate it. The review-bombers failed at this.

An incredible piece of art. Naughty Dog really pushed the boundaries of video games exploring the weight and complexity of human nature. This is not your typical Manichaean and Monomythic storyline. ND does not present us a game about heroes and villains, but a game about people, messed up people willing to do whatever they think is right to fulfill their egoistic and selfish desires. Absolutely adored the game. There were some moments in the second act of the story that dragged for me but ultimately it was fantastic. Gameplay is great, combining elements from the first game with brand new techniques, moves and styles. New styles of infected are terrifying and the different settings have so much to explore in them

In my opinion I believe this game is amazing. I’m pretty bummed that they killed off Joel even after seeing that trailer showing him good and alive. Throughout the whole game I thought he was alive somehow, and seeing Jesse saying his line just caught me off guard, and made me emotional knowing that Joel was actually dead. Honestly there were many moments that caught me off guard. Like playing as Abby. It was boring at first, but learning bout her life made me more intrigued. When Abby shot Tommy in the theater I lost all hope about the game, but seeing Tommy alive in Ellie, and Dina’s house was relieving. I get a lot of people think the story is a little cliche but Ellie lives in a whole different world than ours. Her world is full of evil evil people that will do anything to survive. This is a world without boundaries and laws, anybody can get away with anything. Joel has killed and crossed many people throughout his life it would only make sense for someone to come after him. I had a deep connection to the game because I know how Ellie felt loosing someone close. Waking up the next day knowing they aren’t there that you won’t be able to talk to them. Also knowing that their killer is out there living their life without no repercussion, I would like vengeance as well. Ellie had issues with Joel and knowing that arguing was the last thing they did would bother me as well. This game will make you emotional. I been waiting for this game for over 7 years and I don’t regret buying or even playing it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part 2... A game which answers allot of questions that I had from the first. This game also raises many, but this is why I like it. I went into this game without seeing any reviews, because I didn't want my own view to be hindered by others which i find tends to infect peoples minds which has happened with previous games or films due to their popularity or unpopularity. Lets start with the gameplay, Truly out of all game experiences I had with single player games, I have never played a game with so few bugs. The only 2 bugs I saw in my entire run through were gaps in textures during the Tommy section with Abby. I give the gameplay experience a 10/10, however the gameplay is not all the last of us brings. It brings a story of anger and to be fair, I don't think story wise, this game is as good as the first. However you would be deluded to think the gameplay hasn't had some vast improvement. The world is stunning and really brings an atmosphere with really fluid gameplay mechanics which have improved even more from the first game. I honestly couldn't write enough about how good the gameplay and graphics are in this game, because it is truly a standard all games should aim for.

Now onto the story, honestly I don't understand all the hate with the story, I find the brave writing refreshing because there is too much fan service nowadays than what the writer wants. I believe a truly good story is one that the writer believes is right for the story. I agree that there are some coincidences to benefit movement of the story, however these are not story breaking. The argument that Joel's sending off was cheap is delusional. People forget that this is last of us part 2, not last of us 2. Completely disregarding the first game as character development and saying his outing was cheap is crazy to me. The whole scenario that happened to getting Joel killed is clearly an attempt by the writer to get the player angry, and I know this was a strong focus by the writer, because he is constantly trying to make you lose your temper with the story. People need to understand that just because you're angry with the writing, doesn't make it bad writing. As far as plot holes go, I personally did not spot any, and the people that have said there are, I haven't seen a clear one. If the only plot hole is Ellie killed 100s of people to not get revenge, is completely stupid. I guess the player doesn't want any action, I guess we want a post-apocalyptic tour simulator. Let's not forget you can technically go through allot of the game with killing very few people anyway. The most interesting part with the story was the attempt by the writer to make us feel sorry for Abby after already setting the player with a bias relationship with Ellie. It really gives you a reality check to think even when a characters actions are justified are still treated as the villain is truly worrying when you think about human psychology. The ending was similar to the first with more of a realism take however this time was unsatisfying to the player. This was not done purposefully by the writer but is on of the reasonable outcomes. I truly think the ending I think every player was hoping for would have truly been sad. A tragic story with a tragic end, however I think the one that was chosen was just fine.

I'm running out of space so I will end with this. The game is not a masterpiece, nor is it that unique, however to say it is a bad game is completely delusional. A must play and is still a game of the year contender in my book. The hate is mainly generated by the writer doing what he wants and not what the player wants. It's a story about realism, just like the first. But it seems the fan base only like it went the realism turns in their favor. Thanks for the experience naughty dog, and thanks for reading.

The Last of Us 2 is an improvement from its predecessor in gameplay, narrative and story. It expands on the original world set in the first game by introducing factions and characters that are fascinating to learn about. Naughty Dog have done an excellent job in making the player want to learn more about the world itself and the characters within.

The story is expertly written and in many ways quite daring. It breaks away from traditional storytelling seen in most games and gets you emotionally involved in many of the new characters Last of Us 2 has to offer. Many of these characters are written in such a way that you might and probably will dislike them at first, but over time you will feel emotionally invested in a lot of the characters within Last of Us 2.

As for the gameplay Naughty Dogs have improved upon the first title by adding important features such as being able to get your human enemies to fight the infected, or better yet the infected to fight your human enemies. The combat can also be frantic and you might find yourself hiding under tall grass to escape enemies only to re-emerge and throw a Molotov at a group that was chasing you only moments before.

You may have seen some controversy surrounding the game. Ignore a lot of the low user reviews for The Last of Us 2. A lot of the complaints are about the story from people who have not touched the game itself and instead have read a bullet point list of the story without any of its complexities.

As always stick with game reviewers you trust to form an opinion before buying. I personally recommend Easy Allies review on the game.

Naughty Dogs have kicked it out of the park with another finely crafted game. It's a shame that a large amount of the negative reviews are from "critics" who have never even bothered to pick up the controller.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I finished the game 3 days ago and earned the platinum trophy too just yesterday, it took me some time to process the game and the ending, and in my opinion there couldnt have been a better ending.. and yes one thing i was pissed about was Joels death, its not that ppl are enraged that u killed joel, they are upset because of the way they killed Joel. Ppl should realise that the game revolves around hatred and revenge, and both ellie and abbys story run parallel, at one hand ellie is furious and enraged wanting to get revenge crossing every obstacle in her way and at the other hand Abby is struggling after the stuff that went through, point is NO ONE IS THE GOOD GUY HERE, its the hate and coping with losing a loved one, the ending also in my opinion couldn't be better because if ellie would have killed abby, im sure she wont feel satisfied considering that she saw abby taking care of Lev, plus Abby has lost enough, all her friends family, she wasnt in the WLF anymore and all that, Sure ellie killed all the friends and did violent **** but that was in s fit of rage and anger, thats what naughty dog forced us to do to feel the anger, in the end Ellie was the bigger person cuz she didnt kill abby, in conclusion id giv this game a 9/10, notice how i only talked about story here yeh because if i start talking about the gameplay ill be here all day, the gameplay was **** sick and fun as **** Expand

I’m going to steer clear of whether or not I loved or hated it, but I will offer some perspective on why I think the themes were important.

I see this game from a perspective of someone that has had to sympathize with a lot of different people that were very unsympathetic.

The last of us isn’t about the characters from TLOU1 (Complaints about Tess? Didn’t think so). That’s the problem with complaining about any given character being in the spotlight.

The story is about the last of humanity. By changing the narrative to a different set of characters, it moves the story along. By tying Ellie in, there is some continuity but the problem is that if all you came for is the hope of continuing to use the same characters over and over, it remains forever stagnant.

We don’t own this world, and there are lots of stories to be told about what humanity would be doing fending for itself. In such a hard climate, we have to remember that each character could stumble and fall at any moment and meet a very inglorious death. That is the reality of such a world. Joel made a lot of people meet those ends in part 1. No tears for those people? Didn’t think so.

We praised George R. R. Martin’s book series for being fair and equal to the characters, no matter how much you loved them. Goodness was rewarded with nothing. Don’t get me wrong, if I want to just see “life” happen, I can look outside my window - so I want this game version of “life” to be compelling and dramatic. I want there to be surprising plot twists and turns. I want there to be epic consequences to actions. Sometimes I want what I think to be the “bad” guy to not get their just desserts. If there is going to be unfairness, I just want there to be a good reason to go there. And to tell you the truth, I think there was a good reason for lots of unfairness here.

But the lesson I think that was learned here was that lots of times in both games, characters had the option to be less cruel, to turn around and go home. Joel could have not taken Ellie across the country in part 1 (remember, he was smuggling her). Ellie didn’t have to go on her journey. The mysterious woman didn’t, either. The consequences for their journeys, for doggedly pursuing those goals was to learn a harsh lesson - you take risks and pay for them. Turns out the first game had a MUCH longer ending. We just had to wait 7 years to see it.

If it upsets you that good guys can do bad things, or that bad guys can have sympathetic sides, life is going to be upsetting. Bad guys perform kind acts, good people meet unjust ends. That’s... life. TLOU1 started with a stab to the heart. The world isn’t meant to be fair, and justice is a floating concept. That is what The Last of Us as a series is meant to represent. Humanity as a whole is many stories. When you zoom out, we talk about things like “countries” and “society” as if any of those things actually mean anything at all, but when you zoom in with a microscope it gets downright complicated.

Each person you pass by on the streets got up in the morning, put on clothes, had thoughts, had emotions, and had a story before going by you for thirty seconds. If they bump into you or were rude to you, you might think of them as a terrible person - but they think the same of you - and you then forget them. Ships passing in the night. But they forget that you too had a story that led you to them.

If a main character wants justifiable revenge, well, that’s easy to sympathize with. And don’t get me wrong, I root for lovable main characters. Don’t we all?

But the original Last of Us was such a good game because we rooted for Joel in spite of his evil past. And Joel’s selfish actions are easy to forget because his story is one of redemption. In doing what he wants, we forget that his actions change the world around him, for better or worse. We forget that before we met him, he was a different man. We only see him in the original for 30 hours, and the reality is that he was a terrible person for 20 years. We sympathize with him because he shows affection for a little girl and with that we rationalize what the story tells us of the evil he wrought.

Don’t get me wrong, I am selfish. I would make the same choices. You are meant to feel as he did. And you are meant to be confused in TLOU2. Life is confusing.

I don’t think that The Last of Us Part II is meant to teach any great lessons. It’s just stories about the way humanity is, tales about what we are when we pursue vengeance sub happiness.

And we watch the full story’s journey, learning about blurred lines of good and evil, learning to sympathize and possible to feel a little queasy with that sympathy, maybe we should just realize that people aren’t “good” or “evil.” They’re just people.

If you decided before you pick up the game that you hate the characters, grow up.

While this game does not deserve the amount of negativity it is getting, the controversy surrounding the story is a testament to this game’s ability to truly evoke emotions within the player. Any game, movie, book, song etc that can accomplish this is deserving of praise. While there is much to enjoy about this game, it isn’t without flaws. There is a rather large lull in the halfway point of the game. As far as the narrative, this lull makes a lot of sense. As far as creating and maintaining interest in playing, this lull is almost destructive. If you can push past the halfway point, you will be rewarded. In addition, while I personally found the ending hauntingly and terribly beautiful, it is sure to draw a hard line in the sand for many fans. With all this being said, you should definitely give this game a complete run through to experience what it has to offer. Expand

Definitely not for the weak minded simply because it gets very graphically brutal. Story was solid but few scenes were a little slow so i started using my phone while listening to the story. I feel the political correctness was a little forced in this game as it kind of stood out. Other than that, I was fully immersed in the story, atmosphere, character developments. Well done.

As for the graphics, animation and voice acting they are classic Naughty Dog excellence, the best I have seen in any game so far.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When the game started I felt an instant nostalgic feeling which made me quite happy. Although, I don't like how the game has forced irrelevant political views in the story, and there was no multiplayer provided like it's predecessor had. I have not yet finished the game but I'm greatly enjoying it at the moment, the section of the game where you play as Abby feels like a chore, but overall would recommend it to anyone that enjoyed the first game, feels really similar.

EDIT: Just completed the game and the emotions are overwhelming, for a game we've all been waiting for 10 years it did exceptionally well, takes me a lot to tear up, and the ending did that. I can't stop thinking about the final scene of the games and Abby's survival, does this leave it open for a third game? Or maybe a cheeky DLC? Thanks naughty dog, I had my doubts, but it really lives up to the first game, which was a work of art.

It may not be as good as the first, but it isn't as horrible as everyone is making it out to be. personally, i'd say it's definitely worth a play through because its still hella fun and u might be taken by surprise if u play it urself rather than watch a streamer complain the whole time.
That being said there are some issues with the game, mainly pacing and some story parts are kinda pointless - but it's better to experience it urself and come to ur own conclusion rather than some angry gamer ranting on the internet without true justification.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed my play through of this game. It’s darker than the first, but I feel the creators do a fair job of portraying Ellie’s continued development in a harsh world. I like that she seems affected by the choices she makes in a way that game creators often gloss over. And although I don’t always find myself agreeing with her choices - in fact there are moments where I was opposed to her decision-making - I understand why she does what she does, and I like being challenged as a player to play as a character that isn’t acting like a cut-and-dry “good guy” from jump.
I also really appreciate the introduction of the character of Abby, who serves as sort of a foil to Ellie as the game progresses. It’s not a light game by any means, but I think it’s a good exploration of how cyclical revenge can be and its long-term ramifications. If you’re in it to dive into a story, then it’s the game for you. If you’re strictly looking to have fun from a mechanical standpoint, you’ll probably enjoy playing a different shooter more.

The characters' decisions and motivation are well justified. The story poses one of the most debated philosophical questions, "Would you sacrifice fewer human souls to save many other souls?" This not good against evil. This is two good sides acting from different perspectives. You cannot choose a side because both are right in their own way. Therefore the ending is difficult to predict. The ending was perfect by the way.

I saw the leaks, I understand why the plot upset some fans. I was pissed about happened to Joel.. but understand this. The relationship that Abby and Ellie shared was remarkable, the similarities undeniable and the frustration, passion and revenge that Ellie sought for Joel's demise is POWERFUL. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story being told here is one some may feel unnecessary after the pretty definitive ending of the first, however The Last of Us Part 2 makes itself feel very necessary with the simplistic story idea but the twists and turns it gives you with its 25 hour campaign. I would like to address the leaks as that is a major cause of the review bombing on this site (along with homophobes, transphobia, and those who believe Naughty Dog has some liberal agenda). A majority of the leaks happen very early on, and the cutscenes are taken very much so out of context. Playing through this game, Naughty Dog concocts a rich story and rich characters. Joel and Ellie aren’t how you remember them, they’ve changed for better or for worse. Joel has grown trusting and loving, Ellie, has grown more stubborn and angsty. Both of these things feel extremely natural after the ending of the first game. Many critique Joels death for him being too trusting of Abby but after the ending of the last game you get a good sense of Joel’s change. As for Abby being a playable character, having heard the leaks I was unsure of this. Playing the character who kills a beloved character? That sounds awful! But Naughty Dog does this amazingly well. You get a fantastic sense of Abby as a character and her motivation through flashbacks and the other characters she interacts with. Specifically everything with Yara and Lev were great for Abbys character and helping me like and understand her. The Yara and Lev plotline reminded me a lot of Joel and Ellie from the first game honestly. Ellie is ruthless in this game. Every action has consequences thanks to Naughty Dogs AI interactions. Screaming the names of other enemy AI or the enemy AI screaming in pain as the color drains from their eyes. It’s brutally fantastic and makes you as a player feel horrible. I loved it! It made me feel Ellie’s character arc even more. Many have said they felt unsatisfied by not killing Abby at the end and to that I say the message of the game was never truly revenge, rather learning revenge isn’t the right answer. Abby struggles and so does Ellie. They have a very similar journey. Naughty Dog has proven to be an innovator in story telling with every game they make. This is a masterpiece honestly. Do not listen to the review bombs. The fact that how many critics gave this such good reviews should say something. This game has a story that needs to be told. It’s heart breaking, uplifting and goddamn, Future Days by Pearl Jam will forever make me cry. The Last of Us Part 2 is a masterpiece in video game storytelling. Expand

But, the game took me on an incredible emotional experience that I truly did not expect (but I also managed to avoid any spoilers before playing, which may have helped my mind to stay open). It's story is not as perfect as the first, but it certainly is more daring, and will push the medium forward just as the first did. I highly recommend playing it with an open mind, see how you are carried through it, and investigate your brain and emotional state throughout. It was really inspired with what the game was able to bring out in me. While I disagree with how some things were handled, I respect what it worked to do; overall, I think it succeeded. It's just not as perfect as the first, which of course is a high standard to meet.

If you're willing to play it with an open mind (and truly play through it to the end. Do NOT stop in the middle), then I highly recommend it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't expect to really gain much through posting a user review of TLOU2 on here, but that's not really the point. I just wanted an outlet to post how I personally felt playing through this game. So, a few years back (2016) I picked up TLOA 1 for the first time and I couldn't put it down. I was completely immersed in the characters, the scenery, and the plot. I would go to class and think about this game. I was so absorbed by a video game that I would daydream about the next big event in the game during exams.... I'm surprised I even did that well during that semester. Anyways, what I'm saying is that I believe that the first game was indeed a masterpiece. I played through it twice back to back simply because I couldn't get enough! Fast forward to this year. Luckily my work keeps me busy and I don't usually search for updates on a game that comes out. I was spared from the leaks and spoilers throughout my journey in TLOA2. In fact, I had no idea there was such a negative backing on this game until after I beat it! Whoever is reading this is probably thinking "how the hell did you not see or read any of the thousands of negative reviews?" well... I'm really good at staying away from reviews I guess. I think that I understand why a lot of people are angry or upset, I mean the old main character died! Joel was a character you bonded with. You grew to relate to his feelings in TLOA, and his emotions became your own. It was so easy to become attached to such a beloved character. Yes, killing him promotes awful feelings and the ending of TLOA2 might have you thinking that it's all for naught. Ellie, who lost so many people due to the gripping effects of rage and revenge, chose to spare Abby. **** I mean I was certainly filled with mixed emotions about the end. I wanted closure! I wanted to avenge Joel's death! However, as I listened to the music and I saw Ellie play that last song with missing fingers... The flashbacks to Joel and her last conversation (well second to last. The last was just her pleading and begging him to get up before losing his brains to the she hulk and a golf club) made me think that the whole point wasn't to bring the player closure. This is some serious **** that real human beings experience. Ellie was so devasted by Joel's death that she was suffering PTSD. Holy **** Killing Abby won't make Joel come back. Revenge just brings on more revenge. Revenge feels so good at first... But it just brings out the worst in a person. I've had my own feelings of revenge, I mean I've never wanted to kill someone because of that feeling, but I think the premise is the same. I felt awful going through with it because even though the other person probably deserved what they got, was it really right for me to bring someone misery based on my emotions? Probably not.

TLOA2 brings forth some serious questions and issues about how people process revenge and anger. This game isn't just a story about a post apocalyptic world, it's a story about showing some real emotional trauma that people go through in their lives. It's exaggerated of course. This game sent me on an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. The writing was great, the characters were well developed. Every death felt like an impact or a shock. It's like you knew it was coming but you didn't know how or when. That really puts you in a suspenseful mindset, or at least it did for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Yeah I was sad that Joel died, but I'm not angry. I think it's dumb to be angry at a developer for making a decision in their work. What's the point of being mad? I'm very grateful to live in a time where a video game can create such an amazing experience for me. I grew to love and feel for the characters in TLOA2. Yes, even Abby had some of my sympathy. She lost her father, a hero who would have potentially found the cure to a 2 decade long apocalyptic disease.,for what reason? Joel wanted to value one person's life over humanity's future. So yeah, I understood her side. If someone killed my mom of dad, I'm sure I'd want to bring them to justice. Even if justice was through my own hands.... I'm only human. My heart would race when a difficult situation would arise, whether it be two main characters finally confronting or one of the main characters fighting for their lives against hulking enemies or infected. There was a lot of investment that naturally developed as I progressed through the game. I personally am very happy that I played the game. I actually popped open my copy of TLOA part 1 and began playing it from the beginning again. I've never had the incentive to revisit a game like I have with the TLOA series. This, I guess, is more of an explanation of my personal experience with this game and not so much a cold hard review. I enjoyed it immensely! As someone who avoided all the hype, spoilers, and leaks, I can say that this game was truly amazing. Playing through it blind was the absolute best way to play.

The story is phenomenal, heart-wrenching, and genuinely surprising. I was someone who had a few story beats spoiled from the leaks, and I can genuinely say it did not spoil the game at all. As for gameplay, this is a dramatic improvement over its predecessor, though the AI is not quite as smart as was touted in early previews. Still, the combat loop is fun. To quote Dunkey: "You need to actually turn on your brain and empathise for the characters." Couldn't agree more and it's sad that other people can't see it, and the outrage wouldn't have happened if the plot points didn't get leaked. And regardless of story, it can't be denied the visuals, environments, acting and gameplay is superb. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is so close to a masterpiece it's not even funny. Story wise, this game is *almost* as good as the first game. It is absolutely breathtaking and is a great addition to the cannon of this universe. It just barely misses the mark of the first game, but it is fantastic nonetheless. The only thing I dislike about this game is its pacing around Ellie's Day 1 and Abby's Days 1-3. However, the fantastic story all but makes up for it. Most cut scenes are great. *All* of Joel's stuff is astounding. Along with this, the opening and closing few scenes of the game took my breath away. Not to mention the impeccable graphics, gameplay, acting, etc. A lot of people don't like many of the new characters, but I liked most of them, except for Owen a little.

TL;DR: A masterpiece that barely misses out on a ten because of the pacing.

I'm really glad of the risks taking with TLOU2's story. Thank you naughty dog for enhancing TLOU1's gameplay and giving us a bold story for the 2 that really has its meanings and its emotions. It is really the essence of TLOU to get you by the guts like it did on this game. Shame on you if you stop playing after Joel's death. If you did, then you were never ready for The Last of Us 2, but only wanted to see your favorite character again.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
